This small release should help those users who could not watch videos on YouTube without disabling the extension. We’ve updated our Scriptlets to give filter developers more flexibility in creating ad-blocking rules and make sure you can watch videos without interruption. We have also improved the way we apply advanced filtering rules. For you, this means better ad blocking on websites.

1.11.16 beta 2

We were eager to deliver the shiny new beta version of AdGuard for Safari, but a pesky bug in the scriptlets slipped through our testing. Now that it’s fixed and our scriptlets have been updated, don’t hesitate to give our second beta a try.

@Versty

Some might say that not every release is worth celebrating, as they often consist of minor improvements and bug fixes. Well, we beg to differ. We are very proud to present to you the updated version of AdGuard for Safari. Our main focus here was to ensure compatibility with the new macOS Sonoma, which includes improving our extension overall.

One icon is better than two

As some of you may know, the new macOS Sonoma has been released, bringing a significant change to the Safari browser. Now all extension icons are displayed in the toolbar by default, even if they are not supposed to be there. As a result, the AdGuard Advanced Blocking extension icon also ended up on the toolbar, causing frustration for users.

To address this issue, we’ve merged two extensions into one, called AdGuard for Safari.

What else? We have successfully fixed the annoying issue of the settings panel opening on login. This problem had previously been resolved, but reappeared. Now everything is back to normal.

Finally, we have fixed several bugs in SafariConverterLib — the library responsible for converting AdGuard rules into a format supported by Safari. Our Scriptlets library, which contains short parameterized scripts used for advanced blocking rules, has also been updated. Now it’s your turn to update!

  • Settings panel opens on login #853
  • $match-case modifier does not work #55
  • Scriptlets updated to v1.9.72

We continue to improve AdGuard for Safari. This version fixes several converter performance issues and brings updates to Scriptlets, SafariConverterLib, and AdGuard Assistant.

  • Rules containing if-domain and unless-domain with regex values are not supported #53
  • Rules with a large number of domains in unless-domain and if-domain are split #51
  • Selecting elements to block does not work on baidu.com #1246
  • AdGuard Assistant updated to v4.3.70
  • Scriptlets updated to v1.9.37

1.11.14 beta

We continue to improve AdGuard for Safari. This beta version fixes several converter performance issues and brings updates to Scriptlets, SafariConverterLib, and AdGuard Assistant.

There are many ways to help the app identify an ad. One of them is the :has() pseudo-class. With it, you can, for instance, tell AdGuard to block anything called banner .

And here's the good news: since v16.4, this pseudo-class is supported by Safari and rules with it can be applied natively. This means we don't need to handle such rules with our ExtendedCss library anymore (although you still can do it by using the #?# marker) — the browser does it all by itself. And since the rules are applied in Safari's own content blockers, it speeds up filtering. Win-win!

In this patch, we’ve also fixed problems with the rule converter and updated ExtendedCss and Scriptlets.

  • Consider :has() a standard pseudo-class if the usage of ExtendedCss is not forced by the #?# rule marker #43
  • ExtendedCss updated to v2.0.52
  • Scriptlets updated to v1.9.7

A great small investment for what you get!

Adguard not only blocks ads it does far more by adding another layer of security for online browsing. It works seemlessly in the background. I have used on imac for over a year now and never had an issue. I also have it on my iphone. For what it does it is reasoanbly priced in comparison to other similar apps that charge far more and do not work! Congratualtions to the developer.

Currently most functional and non evil adblocker for Safari

The only drawback that it installs tons of small stuff that hogs on your cpu. But due to the limitations of safari developers can't bundle the permissions at the moment - so I can understand it. The only thing that I don't like the icon at the top of the osx bar. Why? The addon only lives in safari anyway, what's the point putting an icon for system? Oh also I find the settings interface a bit dull and over complicated. But again, it's clear that it's designed to competible and multiplatform in mind. So I can understand it.

Excellent and also Free!

Adguard for Safari is very efective and, for the most part, runs in the background without me being aware it's even there (apart from the lack of ads blighting my browsing experience, of course!). On the recent occasions I have had to report blocking issues the response has been helpful and quick with fixes released shortly afterwards. Thanks for some great software!

YouTube on Safari unusable due to dropped frames

Hey all, I'm having a problem with Safari 17.4.1, or actually it's been much, much longer and I'm reaching the end of my tether. YouTube freezes and freezes and I can't do anything else. All the other browsers I've tried (Chrome, Firefox, Orion, Arc, Vivaldi) don't have the problem. I also see under "Statistics for nerds" that Safari loses a really large number of frames, which is not the case with the browsers mentioned above, at least not to the same extent. I'm currently using Orion because it's simply the best browser with WebKit, but I'd like to use Safari because of the better energy usage, but I use a lot of YouTube and that's just not possible. I tried Vinegar (extension) --> no help Reset NVRAM and SMC --> no help Tried the feature flags --> no help (and now reset again) Disabled extensions (Adguard, Noir, PiPifier, Zotero Connect, Reddit Sinkit and 1Password) --> no help; though I'm not using AdGuard on YouTube due to me having YouTube Premium BUT I'm running AdGuard on my Mac (I've bought this as well) and got the DNS filtering activated but Private Relay is off Cache cleared --> no help History deleted --> no help deleted the one entry under "/Library/InternetPlugins" --> no help Is there anything else I can do? How Apple made Safari about 60% faster in the last 6 months

Jason Cross

A month ago, we told you about the release of Speedometer 3.0 , a new web performance testing benchmark that aims to provide a more fair and representative measure of how a web browser performs at modern web tasks. Unlike earlier versions of Speedometer, which were made more or less by Apple’s WebKit team, version 3.0 is made in a collaboration between Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Mozilla with a new governance model to agree upon what tests are important representations of the modern web.

In other words, it’s probably the most “fair” and up-to-date measurement of web browser performance we have right now.

WebKit is the rendering engine used by Safari and provided to Apple developers who wish to use web rendering within their apps. It’s required to be used by every browser on iOS or iPadOS except for those inside the EU. Apple’s WebKit development team published a blog post detailing how they used Speedometer 3.0 as a guide to optimize performance from Safari 17 (released in September 2023) and Safari 17.4 (released in March 2024).

Over those six months, a lot of small incremental improvements made a big difference. As the blog post summarizes:

With all these optimizations and dozens more, we were able to improve the overall Speedometer 3.0 score by ~60% between Safari 17.0 and Safari 17.4. Even though individual progressions were often less than 1%, over time, they all stacked up together to make a big difference. Because some of these optimizations also benefited Speedometer 2.1, Safari 17.4 is also ~13% faster than Safari 17.0 on Speedometer 2.1.  WebKit blog post

Some of those improvements include things like batching compositing layer updates, increasing cache size on macOS, improving inline and SVG layout, and more. Many of these improvements are minor, resulting in just a few percentage points here or there, or targeting very specific parts of web performance. But multiple small improvements compounding over time made for a much faster browser.

This doesn’t mean Safari is much faster than other Mac browsers, though. When we tested Speedomenter 3.0 last month , we were running Safari 17.4 and found it to be the fastest browser but only by a very small margin. Edge still had some catching up to do, but Chrome and Firefox are both just behind Safari’s Speedometer score.

iOS 18 May Feature All-New 'Safari Browsing Assistant'

iOS 18 will apparently feature a new Safari browsing assistant, according to backend code on Apple's servers discovered by Nicolás Álvarez . MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris confirmed that the code exists, but not many details are known at this time.

iOS 18 WWDC 24 Feature 2

Update: Álvarez has since said that iCloud Private Relay might not be related to this feature.

A browsing assistant in Safari could be one of the many new generative AI features that are rumored to be coming to the iPhone with iOS 18 later this year. There are already multiple iPhone web browsers with AI tools, such as Microsoft Edge with a GPT-4-powered Copilot and Arc Search , which can summarize web pages to provide concise information.

Álvarez also uncovered a so-called "Encrypted Visual Search" feature in the backend code on Apple's servers, but no specific details are known. MacRumors contributor Steve Moser last year discovered a new Visual Search feature for Apple's Vision Pro headset in visionOS beta code, which would allow users to copy and paste printed text from the real world into apps and more, but the feature has yet to launch. It is possible that Apple is planning to debut a more secure version of the feature. However, the code could also relate to the iPhone's existing Visual Look Up feature that can identify objects in photos and videos.

Apple is set to unveil iOS 18 during its WWDC keynote on June 10 , so we should learn more about these potential new features in a few more months.
