Once home to some of America's most notorious criminals, the federal penitentiary that operated here from 1934 to 1963 brought a dark mystique to the Rock. The presence of infamous inmates like Al "Scarface" Capone, and the "Birdman" Robert Stroud helped to establish the island's notoriety. To this day, Alcatraz is best known as one of the world's most legendary prisons. Many people, though, are unaware of the wealth of other stories to be learned on the island. Alcatraz is now home to rare flowers and plants, marine wildlife, and thousands of roosting and nesting sea birds. Civil War-era buildings dotting the island give insight into the 19th century when the island served as both a harbor defense fort and a military prison. You can also see visible reminders of the American Indian Occupation that started in 1969 after the prison closed, highlighting an important milestone in the American Indian rights movement. Come experience the beauty, history and infamy of Alcatraz on the San Francisco Bay. You'll be astounded by what you learn and see.

The complete historical experience

Experience it all on “the rock”, alcatraz and history go hand in hand.

Once home to some of America’s most notorious criminals, the federal penitentiary that operated here from 1934 to 1963 brought a dark mystique to “The Rock”. The presence of infamous inmates, like Al “Scarface” Capone and the “Birdman” Robert Stroud, helped to establish the Island’s notoriety. Yet, many people are unaware of the historical significance before and after it was one of the world’s most legendary prisons.

The 19th century

Civil War-era buildings, cannons, and subterranean rooms give insight into the 19th century when the island served as both a harbor defense fort and a military prison. As you dock at Alcatraz Island, visible reminders of the American Indian Occupation, which began in 1969 and ended in 1971, remains etched on “The Rock”, recognizing an important milestone in the American Indian rights movement.

Today, restoration of the first lighthouse on the Pacific Coast, the historic gardens , and the recently renovated Model Industries Building shed new light on an abundance of stories still locked away. Alcatraz Cruises’ selection of tours reveal those insights directly from the legends.

Customer Reviews

  • If you only have 1-day to visit San Francisco take this tour! "Our cruise had 1-day in San Francisco and this was really the best way to see it all. In the morning we covered some of the best-known San Francisco neighborhoods, along with tons of photo stops along the way. Our guide had plenty of fun stories and history along the route, which dropped us right back in Fisherman’s Wharf. My family grabbed a quick lunch and enjoyed Pier 39’s sea lions before our afternoon Alcatraz Tour. My kids loved the Alcatraz ferry and the audio tour; I loved the fact that I didn’t have to worry about any of the logistics - Thank you Dylan’s!” Kate S.
  • The most amazing 1-Day tour package, beautiful scenery, perfectly organized! "Everything was exactly as advertised. Our bus was waiting, on time and ready to go. Our tour guide was absolutely awesome. Tons of photo ops. You get to see a lot of the key points in the city, like the bridge, Haight-Ashbury, Little Italy, etc., so much history. After enjoying lunch in Fisherman’s Wharf we explored Lombard Street by foot (as our guide told us the best way to see it), before heading to Alcatraz. No line-ups, no hassle and tickets were ready for us when we arrived. Worth every penny! Total class act!” Moe T.
  • Comprehensive and interesting, 5 Stars "We chose this tour because we only had 1 day in San Francisco as part of a honeymoon tour of the USA. It was perfect, great weather, and our guide was so friendly and knowledgeable and made the whole tour very casual. Lunch in Fisherman’s Wharf was excellent per the recommendation of our guide. Alcatraz was also highly enjoyable. Overall a wonderful way to get a feel for the Bay Area and know where to come back to. We also took plenty of memorable photos!” Andrea T.

How We're Different

We are not a big bus company! It’s very common to see large hop-on, hop-off buses around San Francisco, but we take a much more personal approach. Our guides not only have intimate knowledge and unmatched enthusiasm for the Bay City, but we also use specialized minibuses which are built specifically for city tours. We can literally take you where the big buses can’t go.

Our minibuses have large windows for full view of the city as we conduct the tour and are climate controlled with plenty of room for everyone. We stop several times and provide many photo opportunities.

East Kentwood cruises to first place finishes at Charlie Janke Invitational

  • Published: Apr. 26, 2024, 10:47 p.m.

Charlie Janke Invitational

Runners in the boys 800 prepare for the start at Friday's Charlie Janke Invitational at Jackson. [email protected]

JACKSON -- The East Kentwood boys and girls track teams both cruised to wins at the Charlie Janke Invitational on Friday at Jackson, with the boys scoring 138 team points and the girls putting up 184.75.

Saline was second in both, the boys scoring 106 and the girls 89.

On the boys side Detroit Catholic Central was third, Sturgis fourth, Zeeland East fifth, Jackson sixth, East Lansing seventh, Northwest eighth and Carman-Ainsworth ninth.

In the girls meet Zeeland East took third, a point behind Saline, with East Lansing fourth, Sturgis fifth, Carman-Ainsworth sixth, Jackson seventh and Northwest eighth.

East Kentwood’s Isaac Tanis, after a third-place run in the 1600 behind Saline’s Truman Johnson (4:29.31) and Catholic Central’s Ryan Illikman (4:30.63), went wire-to-wire to win the 3200 in 9:54.63.

“I got third in the mile earlier so I just wanted to win a race today,” Tanis said. “I just knew I had to go out on my own to see if anyone would go with me. It felt really good too. It feels good to win.”

Malachi Mosley won the 400 in 48.36, beating Jackson’s Ahmad Ameen.

East Kentwood went first-second in the boys 800 with Evan Nickoles winning in 1:58.07 and Caiden Holt narrowly holding off Catholic Central’s Drew Abbott for second.

Nickoles, Holt, Tanis and Mosley won the 4x800 in 8:04.72.

East Kentwood capped off the night with a boys 4x400 win from Nickoles, Mosley, Holt and Nicholas Longstreet in 3:29.07.

East Kentwood’s Reece Emeott cleared 14′0 to win the boys pole vault, and Jhavon Alexander went 21′2.5 to win the boys long jump.

For the East Kentwood girls, freshman Logan Richardson took first in the 200 in 25.90. Alana Bracey won the 100 hurdles in 14.99 with teammate Abbie Terry second in 15.95. Bracey (46.37) and Terry (48.55) also went first-second in the 300 hurdles.

Richardson, Arianna Carter, Alana Bailey and Santana Eubanks led East Kentwood to a 4x100 win in 48.54. Bracey, Bailey, Eubanks and Richardson won the 4x200 in 1:44.06.

Kayla Harris swept the girls shot put and discus, beating Zeeland East’s Anna Tilden in both, winning the shot with a throw of 38′8 and the discus with a throw of 119′2. Freshman Brooklyn Zylstra cleared 9′6 to win the pole vault.

Jackson’s 4x100 team of Kardiar Sumner, Xavier Gibbs, Jaff Harvey and Kyson Cooper took first in 44.37

Catholic Central’s Zacchaeus Brocks swept the boys hurdles races, winning the 110 in 14.09 and the 300 in 38.56. Saline’s Leonardo Ignacio was second in both.

Catholic Central also got a win in the boys 200 from John Almeda in 22.83, with Carman-Ainsworth freshman Desmond Bryant second.

Zeeland East’s girls distance runners came up with a win in the 800 from Meredith Cook in 2:22.43, a win in the 1600 from Emma Drnek in 5:01.76 and a win in the 3200 from Allison Kuzma in 11:15.12.

That game after a dual against Zeeland West on Thursday.

“I was really fatigued,” Kuzma said. “It’s pretty big when you share classes at both schools, it can make tensions high, just knowing all the competitors. So going in [to Friday] not the best mindset, just wanting to be done, but I think I was able to mentally push through.”

Kuzma was on the heels of Saline’s Laney Alig for most of the race before surging ahead on the final turn. Alig finished in 11:18.47.

“I was hoping to kick it in earlier,” Kuzma said. “In my head I was thinking 800 to go, but sometimes in a race you get kind of lazy and I got kind of lazy and waited, not the smartest move because I’m not the best kicker.”

Zeeland East also got a long jump win from Mirra Fenlon who went 17′0.25.

For the Zeeland East boys, Garrett Weeden threw 57′7 to win the shot put over Catholic Central’s Paxton Heitsch. Heitsch won the discus with a throw of 141′4, with Zeeland East’s Parker Williams second and Weeden third.

Saline’s girls 4x400 team of Katrine Munson, Jordan Wickham, Sophie Roth and Mackenzie Sellenraad took first in 4:14.60. Roth, Munson, Corynn Gady and Lillian Schlack won the 4x800 in 9:35.58.

Saline’s boys 4x200 of Ignacio, Tyler Parrish, LaDainian Woods and Caleb Washington took first in 1:29.68.

Sturgis sprinters swept the 100 with Keyanna O’Tey taking the girls 100 in 12.02 and Rasean O’Tey winning the boys race in 10.82.

Sturgis also had a win in the boys high jump where Brock Fergison cleared 6′4.

East Lansing’s Amelia Biehl won the girls 400 in 59.41. Ariyana James won the girls high jump, clearing 5′2.

River Cruise on Luxurious Radisson Boat

Equipped with ice-breaking technology, these huge fancy yachts are the only river cruisers running all year around. The round trip journey takes two and a half hours and floats past all the big sights like the White House, Novodevichy monastery and the Kremlin. There’s a large open air observation deck up top, while the main body of the ship houses a restaurant with a dance floor for a romantic post dinner dance. For a particularly romantic experience take one of the evening boats and admire the bright lights of the city skyline at night.

The most relaxing and picturesque tour that Moscow can offer: a great way to see the city center and its main attractions. This is a perfect alternative to exploring the city by car, if you only have time to do sightseeing during weekday rush hours.

Your English-speaking guide is eager to share every bit of their knowledge about the surrounding landscape, the architecture and historical details.

We conduct Moscow river tour on Radisson Flotilla boats all year around!  It’s warm inside during winter months, while there’s air conditioning during hot summer days. You may also treat yourself to drinks, lunch or dinner on board (drinks and food are not included in tour price).

Travel alert: Royal Caribbean cancels cruises to this island

Royal Caribbean Cruises has canceled more stops at a popular private resort in Haiti due to safety issues.

Guests who booked on cruises in the summer and early fall are receiving notifications from Royal Caribbean that their cruises to Labadee, a private resort on the northern coast of Haiti, have been canceled, according to royalcaribbeanblog.com , a website that reports on the cruise line.

After Royal Caribbean started to cancel trips to Haiti in March due to civil unrest in Haiti, the cruise line started to cancel more cruises into September, royalcaribbeanblog.com reported. The Royal Caribbean had previously canceled visits to Labadee through the end of this May.

The private resort stop has since been replaced with another port or a day at sea, the royalcaribbeanblog.com reported. The cancellations affect ships such as Adventure of the Seas, Independence of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas, Freedom of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas.

The Royal Caribbean announced in March that it was suspending all calls to Labadee, according to cruiseindustrynews.com . The move came after the U.S. State Department announced a travel alert for people to not visit the country.

“The current security situation in Haiti is unpredictable and dangerous,” the U.S. State Department wrote in a press release in March. “We are aware that there are few or no commercial options to depart Haiti safely at this time. As they become available, we urge U.S. citizens to take advantage of them.”

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

alcatraz city cruises location

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

alcatraz city cruises location

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

alcatraz city cruises location

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

alcatraz city cruises location

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

alcatraz city cruises location

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
