Hurricane Fiona Reroutes Cruise Ships

harmony of the seas cruise ship

Harmony of the Seas was one of several cruise ships forced to reroute due to Hurricane Fiona. Photo: Royal Caribbean

With Hurricane Fiona wreaking havoc in the Eastern Caribbean, several cruise lines have been forced to reroute ships that had been scheduled to make stops in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

Here are a few of the changes announced by cruise lines over the past few days.

Eastern to Western Caribbean Swaps

Disney Fantasy: Disney Fantasy is keeping a scheduled call to Castaway Cay on September 23, but otherwise swapping over from an Eastern Caribbean sailing to a Western Caribbean itinerary. Instead of visiting Tortola and St. Thomas, the ship will call on Cozumel on today, Grand Cayman on September 20, and Falmouth, Jamaica on September 21.

Harmony of the Seas: Other than keeping its originally planned visit to Perfect Day at CocoCay, Harmony is swapping out its Eastern Caribbean sailing, which departed September 18, for a Western Caribbean itinerary. In place of port calls to St. Thomas and St. Maarten, the ship will visit Costa Maya and Cozumel.

MSC Seashore: Like Disney and Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises is keeping its scheduled stop in the Bahamas this week, but replacing the rest of MSC Seashore’s Eastern Caribbean itinerary with a Western Caribbean one. Instead of visiting Puerto Rico, St. Thomas and the Dominican Republic, the ship will make stops in Roatan (Honduras), Cozumel and Costa Maya.

Norwegian Sky: Norwegian Sky’s scheduled Eastern Caribbean sailing, which departed Miami on September 18, has been switched to a Western Caribbean itinerary. In place of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, St. Thomas, Tortola and Great Stirrup Cay, the ship is stopping at Costa Maya, Roatan, Harvest Caye (Belize), and Cozumel.

Itinerary Tweaks

Carnival Legend: Carnival Legend, which departed Baltimore on September 17 on an eight-day sailing, will visit Nassau in The Bahamas on Wednesday, September 21 instead of Grand Turk. On Thursday September 22, the ship was scheduled to visit Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic, but will now visit Bimini in The Bahamas, instead.

Carnival Freedom: Carnival Freedom is currently on a five-day cruise out of Part Canaveral. On Tuesday, September 20, the ship will spend the day at sea instead of calling at Grand Turk. Instead of a day at sea on Wednesday, September 21, it will stop at Freeport, The Bahamas.

Scarlet Lady: Scarlet Lady made one change to its scheduled itinerary. Instead of visiting Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic on Sunday, September 18, the ship instead called in at Costa Maya, Mexico.

Disney Cruise Line Reroutes Disney Fantasy Due to Tropical Storm Fiona. Don’t Panic.

disney cruise fiona storm

Disney Cruise Line has announced a change to one of its upcoming sailings as Tropical Storm Fiona works its way through the Caribbean.

DCL announced earlier today that the September 17th, 2022 sailing of the Disney Fantasy will now be a Western Caribbean cruise, rather than its previously-planned Eastern Caribbean cruise.

This means that Tortola and St. Thomas are no longer on the ship’s itinerary.

The Disney Fantasy will now visit Cozumel, Mexico, on Monday, September 19. It will visit George Town, Grand Cayman on Tuesday, September 20, followed by Falmouth, Jamaica on Wednesday, September 21.

The stop at Disney Castaway Cay will remain as scheduled on Friday, September 23.

DCL advises that, based on the current predicted storm timing and path, they do not currently anticipate additional changes to other sailings.

Fiona is currently expected to scrape Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic before veering north. The current track keeps it well east of Florida.

Tropical Storm Fiona: Will it impact my cruise from Florida to the Caribbean?

disney cruise fiona storm

Port Canaveral cruise ships (FOX / file)

Tropical Storm Fiona is making its journey over the Atlantic and will bring impacts to the Northern Caribbean Islands on its current forecast track.

The former Tropical Depression Seven strengthened Wednesday night, becoming the sixth named storm of the season.

Most cruise ships that leave from Florida often sail to the Caribbean, so news of Fiona may leave some cruisers worried about their upcoming vacations.

As of Thursday afternoon, the National Hurricane Center said Fiona is located east of the Leeward Islands with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph.

The storm is forecast to produce total rainfall accumulations of 4 to 6 inches in the Northern Leeward Islands, the British and U.S. Virgin Islands andPuerto Rico, with isolated maximum totals of 10inches across eastern Puerto Rico. Eastern Hispaniola can expect 4 to 8 inches of rainfall, with isolated maximum totals of12 inches.

Forecasters said the rains may produce flash and urban flooding, along with isolated mudslides in areas of higher terrain.

Track the storm live in the YouTube video player below:

While booking cruises during hurricane season mean there is a chance a storm could impact it, Gene Sloan, the cruise team lead for the travel website and blog The Points Guy, told FOX Weather it's still relatively rare.

"What they sometimes do is they'll just reroute the ship entirely," Sloan said. "You get on a ship on Saturday that's supposed to do a seven-day trip to the eastern Caribbean, but there's a big hurricane or tropical storm in that area, they can make a call that day or the day before or the day after to reroute that ship to the western Caribbean," Sloan said.

And if there’s going to be bad weather that’s going to be in the way of where the ship is supposed to go, they can move the ship, go early into a port or leave a port late. They can even flop a port.

Bottom line: You would end up with a bunch of different ports but still get a nice, sunny cruise.

"They are really looking at it 24 hours a day and making calls just like the airlines do up until hours before they are supposed to be somewhere," Sloan said.

According to Cruise Critic's website , if a ship skips a port, you're likely entitled to the destination's port fees, which is typically a minimum amount ($7 to $20).

Depending on the size of the hurricane, cruise ships can steer around the most intense part of the storm.

According to the National Weather Service, hurricane-force winds can have about a 25-mile radius in a small hurricane, compared to about a 150-mile radius in a large hurricane.

Hurricane Fiona Hits String of Caribbean Cruise Ports

Picture of Sarah Bretz, Contributor

  • September 21, 2022

Hurricane Fiona is now out of the Caribbean and heading north through the Atlantic Ocean. Early Wednesday morning, it was upgraded from a Category 3 to a Category 4 storm, with sustained winds of at least 130 miles per hour.

Hurricane Fiona NHC

This past week, a number of cruise lines (Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises, and Disney Cruise Line) that had planned eastern Caribbean itineraries to ports such as San Juan or the Dominican Republic altered course, many heading west instead to destinations like Cozumel and Grand Cayman.

Here’s an overview of what we know so far about four Caribbean destinations that the hurricane impacted:

Puerto Rico

Hurricane Fiona Puerto Rico

As a Category 1 storm, the hurricane barreled right over Puerto Rico with wind gusts over 70 miles per hour, leaving much of the territory flooded and most of it without electricity. As of the morning of Wednesday, September 21st, only 380,000 of Puerto Rico’s 1.5 million utility customers had power. About half of the island is still without running water.

The island is also dealing with lots of collapsed roads due to the intense floodwaters, and at least two people have died in Puerto Rico due to the storm.

As of now, Carnival Cruise Line’s Mardi Gras is scheduled to visit on September 27 and Disney Fantasy on September 28.

Dominican Republic

Hurricane Fiona Dominican Republic

Cruise ports Amber Cove and Taino Bay are both in the Puerto Plata region, and a shore excursion operator is reporting no damage at the port areas.

Peak wind gusts from the storm in the Dominican Republic reached around 98 miles per hour.

As of Tuesday, nearly 2 million utility customers in the Dominican Republic were without power. The hurricane also destroyed over 600 homes, and at least 12 communities in the country have been cut off from aid due to damaged roads and bridges. At least two people in the Dominican Republic have died from the storm.

Turks and Caicos

Hurricane Fiona Grand Turk

Parts of Turks and Caicos were also hit by the storm, which had been upgraded to a Category 2 and then a Category 3 by the time it arrived there. In the Turks and Caicos Islands, it had sustained winds of nearly 125 miles per hour.

Many areas of the country are currently without power, including Carnival Corporation’s Grand Turk Cruise Center.

Jack’s Shack, a local watering hole for a lot of cruisers, posted on the Jack’s Shack Grand Turk Facebook page that the island is being evaluated. There’s still no electric, internet, or cell phone service, and they have no idea how long it will take for these things to be addressed. Jody Dorsett Pearce, who runs the JACK’S SHACK GRAND TURK Facebook group, said “He did make his way to the Shack and no major damage, just lots of debris.”

No cruise ships are scheduled to call at Grand Turk until next week when Carnival Sunrise arrives on September 27.

Bermuda Carnival Horizon

Hurricane Fiona is forecasted to brush Bermuda Thursday evening, potentially still as a Category 4 hurricane. The center is expected to pass west of the island, with tropical storm conditions expected but hurricane conditions still possible.

Sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph are expected to reach Bermuda by late Thursday or early Friday. The island will likely experience heavy rain and wind gusts, along with storm surges.

The U.S. State Department has issued a travel advisory urging Americans to reconsider travel to Bermuda due to the potential impact of the hurricane.

Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Magic and Royal Caribbean’s Adventure of the Seas are scheduled to visit the island early next week. At the time of publication, there have been no itinerary changes.

U.S. and Atlantic Canada

Even though the hurricane isn’t expected to head towards the United States’ east coast, it could generate onshore waves that are eight to 10 feet high.

It is, however, expected to reach Atlantic Canada as a hurricane-force cyclone late Friday and Saturday, bringing high winds and heavy rainfall. Meteorologists in Canada say that it could be one of Atlantic Canada’s strongest storms in modern records.

Will Hurricane Fiona Impact Disney World? What You Need To Know

disney cruise fiona storm

Disney World is certainly no stranger to the occasional storm .

disney cruise fiona storm

And in multiple cases, the parks have even been shut down due to hurricanes and named storms that have threatened the Sunshine State. We’ve been keeping an eye on storms in the tropics that could potentially impact your Disney World trip, and if you’ve been worried about Hurricane Fiona’s path, it looks like we’ve got some good news to share!

Despite what rumors you may have heard, Disney World cannot control the weather.

disney cruise fiona storm

But, it looks like luck is on Disney’s side (at least this time) when it comes to Hurricane Fiona — which has made landfall in the Dominican Republic, according to WESH Orlando .

Heavy rains, flooding, and high winds have been hitting the country as a result, and Hurricane Watches and Warnings are still in effect for much of the tropics.

The storm is predicted to continue past the Dominican Republic late Tuesday evening and head northeast into the Atlantic toward Bermuda, per NOAA . By Thursday, Hurricane Fiona is predicted to weaken and no longer be classified as a hurricane.

disney cruise fiona storm

But, this is good news for guests heading to Disney World this week and weekend, as they won’t be faced with having to deal with a potential hurricane. There is almost always a chance of severe weather or rain in Disney World , though, so it’s best to be prepared either way.

Will Hurricane Fiona Affect Your Disney World Trip? The Latest Updates

By Kelly Oliveros Leave a Comment

If you’re heading to Disney World soon, you may be checking general weather forecasts right about now. If you’ve turned on the news or looked at weather updates recently, you may have heard about Hurricane Fiona.

disney cruise fiona storm

Dark clouds over Cinderella Castle a few weeks ago

It is hurricane season right now and hurricane season will last through November 30th . So that might have you wondering whether Hurricane Fiona will impact your Disney World trip in any way ? We’ve got the latest updates here.

First, we just want to make a quick disclaimer that the post below is based on current information as of the latest updates to this post. Situations with hurricanes, storms, and weather, in general, can change a lot and can change rapidly. We will work to keep this post updated. Just bear in mind that everything is subject to change.

As of right now, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and National Hurricane Center are tracking a few disturbances, including Hurricane Fiona.

disney cruise fiona storm

The current cone for Hurricane Fiona shows its probable path taking it away from the United States and a little further to the east. Much of its path is expected to be over the ocean. As of right now, the track does NOT show it heading to or landing in Florida.

disney cruise fiona storm

Puerto Rico was severely impacted by the storm and life-threatening flooding is expected through tonight (September 19th). Life-threatening flash flooding is likely for parts of the Dominican Republic through early in the day on September 20th.

Hurricane Fiona is then expected to strengthen after moving away from these places. Hurricane conditions are expected in Turks and Caicos, and tropical storm conditions could impact the southeastern Bahamas.

disney cruise fiona storm

Here’s a look at the 2PM intermediate advisory from September 19th.

The 2pm intermediate advisory for #Fiona has been issued; Here's the latest on position and intensity… pic.twitter.com/Cjp9idn1Op — Eric Burris (@EricBurrisWESH) September 19, 2022

Just because Hurricane Fiona is not expected to head directly to Florida or make landfall in the state, that doesn’t mean Florida will escape all impacts from the storm.

The storm could impact those on U.S. beaches. FOX 35 Orlando points out that as Fiona intensifies in the ocean, its winds will push water against the East Coast. That is expected to result in “dangerously high surf” at the beaches this week . There would be surf levels as high as 5-7 feet along the Atlantic coast in Florida.

disney cruise fiona storm

©FOX 35 News

Additionally, the risk for rip currents will be at the highest level. So if you were planning on adding a beach trip to your Disney vacation, act with caution. Swimming will be dangerous and the rip current risk will be life-threatening. FOX 35 News says that if you go in the water, don’t swim alone and make sure you swim close to a lifeguard.

The rip current risk will be at its highest on Wednesday through the weekend. The surf is expected to decrease late on Sunday.

While it appears that (for now) Florida will not be directly impacted by Hurricane Fiona, it will be indirectly impacted by an increase in that swell, high wave heights, and dangerous rip currents.

disney cruise fiona storm

Disney World is not located on either of Florida’s coasts, so these waves and rip current risks won’t necessarily apply to it . Since the park is in the central part of the state, those beach warnings aren’t really a concern, but it’s still something to be aware of in case you were planning a beach trip add-on to your Disney vacation.

How else could Florida be impacted? FOX 35 Orlando  notes that Florida will also experience a “change in moisture” due to the storm. A lot of the tropical air mass that had been over Florida will be carried out to sea with Hurricane Fiona, so the state will be “left a bit drier as we head into the start of fall.”

In terms of a general weather forecast for the Orlando area, meteorologist Eric Burris Tweeted the following photo showing the 7-day forecast.

Right in time for the first day of fall, our rain chances come down! Here's a look at our 7 day forecast. I'm heading in to the office shortly to update things… Let's make it a great one! pic.twitter.com/sf3AZdVFwq — Eric Burris (@EricBurrisWESH) September 19, 2022

Weather.com shows a somewhat similar outlook. On Tuesday and Wednesday, scattered thunderstorms are predicted with high temperatures near 90 degrees. On Thursday and Friday, however, mostly sunny weather is expected , with highs reaching just past 90 degrees. Then, the highs go down ever so slightly on the weekend as some showers and clouds move in.

disney cruise fiona storm

©The Weather Channel

While it seems like Hurricane Fiona is headed down a path that likely won’t impact Florida directly, the presence of this hurricane is a good reminder that Florida is still in hurricane season for a little while longer.

Hurricane season will continue through November 30th. Click here to see and bookmark our post which we regularly update with hurricane information.

disney cruise fiona storm

Storm Clouds!

We have seen our fair share of rainy days and severe weather in Disney World , and it’s something you’ll want to be prepared for even if a hurricane isn’t headed near the Most Magical Place on Earth.

Florida storms can bring flooding to the Disney parks (including INSIDE Disney’s stores sometimes) and flood advisories are sometimes issued.

Note that bad weather can also impact flights and lead to delays or cancelations , close down certain rides in the parks , and close down certain forms of transportation — like the Disney Skyliner.

disney cruise fiona storm

At times, tornado warnings or watches may be put in effect for Disney World (or parts of it) — a funnel cloud was even spotted near EPCOT recently.

In other words, don’t take the weather situation and the fact that Hurricane Fiona isn’t currently projected to directly impact Florida for granted. Florida can have some severe weather on its own (without the help of a hurricane) and you’ll need to be prepared.
