AUSTRALIAN BEACH VOLLEYBALL TOUR WINNERS CROWNED IN WOLLONGONG

AUSTRALIAN BEACH VOLLEYBALL TOUR WINNERS CROWNED IN WOLLONGONG

Queensland pair Bryce Poland and Christopher Blake have won their first Australian Beach Volleyball Tour title, while a pair of Chinese Olympians also claimed victory in Wollongong.

In the elite men’s competition, Mateusz Zieba (POL) and Daniele Acconci (ITA) had beaten Poland and Blake on their run to victory in Canberra in January, however the Queenslanders drew first blood in Wollongong with victory in their Pool D encounter on Saturday.

The fourth seeds proceeded to the semi finals undefeated where they knocked out top seeds Solomon Bushby (SA) and James Takken (QLD)..

Pool D turned out to be the form group of the men’s competition, with Zieba and Acconci bouncing back from their early defeat to win six straight sets and make it to their second consecutive final.

The evenness of the fourth and fifth seeds was evident as they split the first two sets. In a tit-for-tat battle, Zieba and Acconco had match point at 14-13 in the third set, however Blake and Poland reeled off three straight points to clinch gold in a match which lasted 116 points (2-1: 27-25, 13-21, 16-14).

“It feels unbelievable, it’s probably one of the best feelings of my life,” said Blake. “We only started playing together in January but we gel really well on the court and we’ve got a good coach who always gives us good strategies and helps us a lot.”

Poland said that after so many matches against their final opponents, they were getting closer and closer to today’s result.

“We’ve played them every tournament this season so it’s kind of been building up,” he said. “They smoked us in the first game in Canberra and then every game after that we started to learn their game plan and just took advantage of what we could do.”

In the playoff for bronze, Australian Junior Volleyball Tour under 21 winners Lucas Josefsen (QLD) and Ben Hood (QLD) beat Bushby and Takken.

The women’s draw was dominated by Chinese pair Xue Chen and Xia Xinyi, both of whom competed at the Tokyo Olympics. Chen – the 2013 World Champion and 2008 Olympic bronze medallist – and Xinyi – who made the round of 16 in Tokyo – didn’t drop a set on their way to claiming victory in Wollongong.

They faced off in the final against fifth seeds Stefanie Fejes (NSW) and Jana Milutinovic (SA) who had dropped just one set in the tournament and took out Tour Leaders Sarah Richter (NSW) and Lucia Michalovicova (NSW) in the semi finals.

The Aussie pair more than held their own in the final, taking more points off the Chinese combination than any team throughout the tournament. In windy conditions, Chen and Xinyi took control of the first set which they won 21-16.

The second set was a much tighter affair, and with the scores locked 15-all the crowd got right behind Fejes and Milutinovic. However their more experienced opponents went up a gear, scoring six of the next seven points to take the match, however Fejes and Milutinovic could certainly hold their heads high.

“It’s the best result we could have come away with so we’re super happy with how we performed,” said Milutinovic. “It’s our first national tour together as a team, so we’re super happy and up-and-up from here.

Fejes said that playing against a pair of Olympians including a former World Champion would hold them in good stead for the future.

“It was such a great opportunity and we gave them everything we had,” said Fejes. “It was really amazing to play together at such a high level and experience that.”

The bronze medal in the Elite Women’s competition went to Jasmine Fleming (QLD) and Britt Kendall (SA), victorious in a 2-0 victory over Richter and Michalovicova.

Next and final stop for this year’s Australian Beach Volleyball Tour doubles as the Australian Championships in Coolangatta on 24-26 March.

Junior and senior competitors from the Illawarra took part in the revamped tour which wrapped up at North Wollongong Beach on Sunday afternoon.

The juniors highlighted the opening two days of the tour, with Woonona teenager Adax Brienen living up to the hype as volleyball's next big thing, partnering with Adam Fejes (NSW) to win the U19 boys comfortably.

The duo entered the tournament as favourites after winning the last Tour event in Brisbane and the top seeds did not disappoint and made the final without dropping a set. In the final they faced second seeds Asher Gill (NSW) and Felix Birke (NSW), who jumped out to an early lead but Brienen and Fejes squared the ledger in the second set before taking out the decider to win 2-1 (18-21, 21-17, 15-8).

"It feels really great to win it on, basically, my home beach," Brienen said. Fejes added: "It's really good to back it up from Brisbane where we got gold. There was a bit of pressure but we got it done."

Like Brienen, Mali Towers and Lara Limbrick took advantage of competing on home sand with the Wollongong locals winning the U19 women's tournament.

The second seeds were forced into a tough semi-final hitout against top seeded South Australian pairing Leilani Burnell and Georgina Vanloo. In a match which went for 116 points - the longest across both days of competition in all four categories - Towers and Limbrick eventually triumphed 2-1 (21-17, 21-23, 18-16).

In the final, third seeds Oriwia Noble (NSW) and Remy Song (NSW) shot out to an 11-3 lead, however the locals recovered to take the set 21-18. The second set was just as hard-fought, but eventually Towers and Limbrick took it by the same score to earn their place on top of the podium.

"It feels pretty good; pretty stoked because we've worked pretty hard to get where we are, and it's the last tournament of the season for us as well," Towers said.

"It's nice to see everyone get together in our community and to play on our home beach and to win on it just feels amazing."

In the under 21 men's competition, Queensland pair Ben Hood and Lucas Josefsen repeated their victorious run in Brisbane by claiming gold over seventh seeds Jarvis Page (NSW) and Jacob Baird (QLD).

Cassie Dodd fell just short of winning her third straight under 21 women's competition, as she and Stefanie Fejes (NSW) went down to Elizabeth Alchin (WA) and Kayla Mears (QLD) 2-0 in the final. Brienen, Towers and Limbrick also competed in the Open men and women's categories respectively but were knocked out in the round of 16.

Cordeaux Heights player Matt Gigliotti and West Wollongong's Hugh Akmacic finished in equal fifth-place in the division two challenger series in the open men's.

This result came after the relatively new pairing won the open men's in the Canberra leg of the Australian Beach Volleyball Tour.

For the record Chinese pair Xue Chen and Xia Xinua won the women's elite on Sunday in Wollongong.

They are both Olympians. Chen is 2013 World Champ and 2008 Olympic bronze medallist.

Stefanie Fejes and Jana Milutinovic came second, with the bronze medal going to Britt Kendall and Jasmine Fleming.

Chris Blake and Bryce Poland took out the elite men's after downing Danielle Acconci and Mateusz Zieba in the final. Lucas Josefsen and Ben Hood teamed up to win bronze.

Nuvali Open 2024 beach volleyball: Australia’s Stefanie Fejes and Jana Milutinovic win women’s gold medal

Fejes and Milutinovic beat Jasmine Fleming and Georgia Johnson in an all-Australian final. D’Artagnan Potts and Ben Hood won bronze in the men’s competition.

Beach Volleyball.

Australian beach volleyball players won three medals - one gold, one silver and one bronze - at the AVC Beach Tour Nuvali Open 2024 held in Laguna, the Philippines.

Playing at the Nuvali Sand Courts in the City of Santa Rosa, Australia’s Stefanie Fejes and Jana Milutinovic were crowned women’s champions after defeating compatriots Jasmine Fleming and Georgia Johnson, 21-19, 25-23 in the final on Sunday.

Fejes and Milutinovic, ranked 51st in the women’s world beach volleyball rankings, took 52 minutes to overcome their fellow countrywomen and training partners, who are currently world No. 47.

The final proved to be a hard-fought affair. Fejes and Milutinovic endured a difficult start before regaining their composure and took the closely contested first set 21-19.

The second set also went deep as Fleming and Johnson pushed the top seeds and threatened to take the final to a third set. However, Fejes and Milutinovic held their ground and won 25-23 against the second seeds to conquer their first Asian Tour title.

Fejes and Milutinovic had earlier beaten Suzuka Hashimoto and Reika Murakami of Japan 2-0 (21-12, 21-18) in the semi-finals.

Fleming and Johnson also got the better of Japanese third seeds Asami Shiba and Saki Maruyama 21-17, 21-17 in the other semis to secure an all-Aussie final at the Nuvali Open.

In the men’s draw, D’Artagnan Potts and Ben Hood, the world No. 103, overcame a semi-final defeat to win the bronze medal match and ensured that Australian teams finished with a medal of every colour from the meet.

Potts and Hood’s run to the final came to an end against higher-ranked Thai opponents Pithak Tipjan and Poravid Taovato in the last four. The Australian team lost 21-15, 18-21, 15-11.

However, the pair put that defeat behind them and clinched the bronze medal against another Thai pair - Surin Jongklang and Dunwinit Kaewsai, beating them 21-15, 21-14.
