Bapo has led a perfect tour of culture and fun in Bali. The activities were well spread out and we were able to eat at consistent intervals. We experienced many unique local actvities and dining experiences. Bapo made sure we were given opportunities to do extra fun things we requested. My top highlights include the snorkelling with turtles, all of the hostel locations were incredible, and the relaxing time in the sun was exactly what I expected. For the new cooking class I think it could have been a bit more organized as the chef seemed somewhat overwhelmed and missed some steps which extended the class longer. The food did taste great and I liked that there was a vegetarian and a main course meal which I will make at home for sure. Please continue this tour and make sure Bapo remains a star of the Wanderlands tour. This was my 1st experience in Asia and after an incredibly long set of flights from Canada it was still so worth it. I will highly recommend this tour to my friends.

The best tour I have ever been on! you get a full your of the entire island, visiting temples, beaches, and going to some of the top spots in Bali. My driver and guide Dede was excellent from the pickup at the airport until I left Bali. He knows every road in the island and can get you where you need to go with the least amount of traffic. He was very knowledgeable with the history of the temples, a great photographer, and very personable and fun to have around for the week! I would recommend anyone looking to visit Bali do this tour as it gives you everything you need in 6 days!

We had a wonderful trip to Nusa Penida island with our guide Rukun! We used the transportation through the tour company which made finding him a breeze since it’s quite crazy down at the port with others transporting out of Sanur! Rukun took us to the boat and put us up top for the best view :) At the island we had a local driver the entire day for our private tour. The roads are a bit bumpy as they are still working on building this out the past couple of years since the island has gained tourists recently. Rukun asked out preference on how much time we would like to spend in certain spots and made sure we stuck to the plan. We opted for less time at the Views and more time relaxing at Crystal Bay. All were wonderful. Rukun knew the best spots for the best photos. The views here are breath taking! It looks like Instagram truly makes to our to be but our photos don’t do it justice. Each spot is more beautiful than the next. Having a swim at crystal bay was great to relax, have some time to ourselves and grab a beer on the beach. Rukun was a great guide! He was upbeat, funny and cheerful and really made our day special. The lunch spot they took us to was great! Authentic food, good service and relaxing. I would recommend this day tour to anyone! It was about 45 minutes from Nusa Dua and a great change to the resort vibe in the area. If you book this- request Rukun! (Especially if you want some laughs, to have a great time and to get great photos).

Bali & Lombok Adventure (from Ubud to Gili Air)

What people love about bali tours from ubud.

Just finished the Bali/ Lombok tour, which I thoroughly enjoyed with the amazing group leader Stacia. Stacia’s local knowledge, her passion and friendliness are unmatched. I joined the tour half way through and she made me feel welcome and like I’d been there all along. Accomodation was great, I can’t comment on Ubud as I didn’t stay at the hostel, but the hotel in Gili T was approx a 1 min walk from the port. This is particularly great on an island that doesn’t have taxis (only horse and carts). The hotel in Lombok was stunning. Transport on the tour has been pretty good apart from the shared bus from Ubud to Padang Bai port, it was a little cramped. The boat to Gili t was a fast boat that took approx 1 hour 45 mins, this is so much better than what I’ve heard about with the slow boat. The boat wasn’t full and had aircon, but it did have a strong fumes from the engine. We also were able to wait in a coffee shop until it was time to depart, so no waiting in the hot sun! The speed boat we took from Gili to Lombok was a private boat with 200 horsepower, so was speedy and fun! We got picked up in Lombok in a private bus that we used several times during our time in Lombok. In Lombok on the waterfall hike day, I asked Stacia if I could take a bike instead of the hike, and she organised this for me, no problem! Riding on the Lombok roads this way was a fun experience. Overall I’d recommend this tour to anyone, even to the non partying older people like me as there’s always an option to party, but also plenty of free time for catching up on important sleep! Thank you Stacia for making this tour, it would not be the same without you.

There are countless adventures you can take and intriguing sights to see, both natural and architectural, to stay busy for weeks (let alone what the surrounding has to offer); however, if you have a strong idea on what you’re interested in seeing and doing, a week or two should be enough to have as many day trips in Ubud as you want. We had an amazing day with Awan in Ubud. We were picked up from our hotel in Kuta on time and the car was clean and tidy. Awan was incredible with sharing his knowledge of Ubud and Bali. We learnt about history and different traditions and customs. The waterfall, coffee farm and rice terraces were great and we had enough time to spend at each one. I also mentioned to Awan about wanting to see some turtles so he stopped at a turtle rescue centre on our way back to Kuta in the afternoon and that was great. I would definitely recommend this trip, we chose a half day as we didn’t want to be gone for a whole day and also had no interest in the monkey forest at all, and this was the perfect amount of sightseeing.

4 DAYS UBUD ITINERARY

#1 campuhan ridge walk.

Start your Ubud 4 day itinerary by taking a sunrise (or early morning) stroll along the Instagram-famous Campuhan Ridge. 

The walk takes you through a ridge between beautiful rice fields and palm trees. You’ll be surrounded by lush greenery and will be able to experience Ubud from a different perspective. 

Why come in the morning? You will avoid the crowds and will manage to have an intimate experience, and no other people in these awesome photos you’re going to take. You may also spot a few Bali expats, walking their dogs.

Another reason to come early in the morning is to avoid the heat and enjoy yourself.

The path is literally behind the main street, but the vibe is so different from the hustle and bustle of Ubud town. 

You can easily walk here from the centre of Ubud or come on a scooter. Simply find Warwick IBAH Luxury Villas and Spa on Google Maps. When you get to a crossroad, on the right, you will see a sign to IBAH so take the opposite direction to reach the start of Campuhan Ridge Walk.

If you come on a scooter, there will be a car park before the bridge. There are no entrance fees. After the bridge, there is a pretty little temple that you can check out and to continue, walk along its fence to the right.

If you want to pop into the temple, make sure you bring a sarong to cover your shoulders and knees.

The walk is short and sweet , and it is one of the best Ubud things to do completely free! You can continue as long as you want and go back when you’re ready.

If you own a drone, definitely bring it with you!

#2 Ubud Monkey Forest Sanctuary 

Next on the list of the best things to do in Ubud Bali on your first day is visiting the monkey forest. Yes, monkeys in Ubud have their own park where they make the rules!

Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is a natural habitat for over a thousand long-tailed monkeys . The park is also an important conservation centre. 

There is a small entrance fee which is around $6 (80k IDR) for adults and a little less for children. You can also buy some bananas for the monkeys. 

The opening hours are 8:30 am to 6 pm. 

It is important to follow the rules set by the park because an upset monkey can be really vicious. As a general rule, you shouldn’t be carrying any plastic bags, plastic bottles or any loose objects that monkeys can snatch from you.

Leave everything in your hotel , including sunglasses, and never look the monkeys in the eyes . Lol, I know how it sounds, but it’s official advice.

If you follow the rules, you’ll have an enjoyable visit and will be able to observe the monkey’s life.

There are many cute monkey babies! But be aware of their protective mothers that can attack you to defend their offspring if they feel threatened by you. So stay at a distance.

If you want a funny photo that looks like a selfie of you taken by a monkey , you can approach a park ranger. For a small tip, they will take the photo for you using a trick!

Also, if a monkey jumps on you , do not panic! Generally, if you’re not carrying anything of interest to them, they won’t do it.

#3 Ubud Royal Palace 

The next stop is Ubud Palace – one of the more cultural places to visit in Ubud.

Ubud Royal Palace, or Puri Saren Agung is located right in Ubud on Jl. Raya Ubud 8, in the centre of the town. It is where the royal family of Ubud used to reside.

The entrance is free, and it’s a little crowded, so it’s good to be here in the morning for a better experience. The palace is small, so it will be a quick stop before you move on to the next place.

There is also a dance performance every evening which is one of the best things to do in Ubud at night. The entrance fee for the evening show costs around $6.

#4 Lotus Temple or Pura Taman Saraswati

After visiting the Royal Palace, pop into the Saraswati Temple, which is a Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Saraswati.

The temple is also known as the Ubud Water Palace because of its magnificent lotus pond. 

The entrance is free, and the temple is located in the Ubud centre, behind Starbucks . Get. a coffee and enjoy it with a stunning view over the temple!

#5 Art Market in Ubud, Bali

A visit to Ubud wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the art market. The market is situated very close to the Saraswati Temple, on Jl. Raya Ubud Street (to the right of Starbucks) , and it’s open for business every day from 6 am to 6 pm. 

The market is vibrant and full of colours and a variety of products, and it’s the best place to do your Bali Ubud shopping. Even if you don’t want to buy anything, it’s an experience on its own.

There is plenty of merchandise from colourful scarfs , hand-made pottery, dream catchers , traditional figurines and some amazing paintings to Bintang t-shirts and fridge magnets. My favourite ‘Bali souvenirs’ are the gorgeous wicker handbags !

The normal street market rules apply here. The asking price is always a starting price, and you are expected to haggle . Remember to stay polite and respectful and that a lot of these people are poor, and the additional dollar will make a difference to their income.

Also, if you want to buy silver, gold or batik, the street market is not the best place; instead, go to a properly certified shop to avoid any possible scams. Just use common sense, and you’ll be fine! 

#6 Juwuk Manis Ricefield Walk

Continue strolling through the market street – Jl. Suweta and head towards Kajeng Rice Field for some ricefield views and a nature walk in the middle of the busy city.

Continue towards Sweet Orange Warung – which is a great stop for a fresh coconut or a Bintang, and take the Sweet Orange Walk Trail, which will take you back to the main street.

The walk will take around 1 hour , and on your way, you will see local farmers working on their fields, a few small art workshops, and maybe even a lady that we met that offered us a fresh coconut!

#7 Enjoy An Afternoon In a Spa

A visit to Ubud wouldn’t be complete without a spa experience. Nothing beats a massage or a whole spa package in Ubud. I visited Jaen Spa, which is a little away from Ubud, located in a peaceful village overlooking the rice terraces. They offered a free pick-up and drop-off service, so the location wasn’t a problem.

We got welcomed with snacks, a drink and a cold towel. And had a scrub, whole-body massage and a flower bath. It was such a lovely experience, and I felt like a newborn princess after it ! There are so many good spas in Ubud, and you pay a fraction of the money you would pay back home for a truly royal treatment! 

#8 Have A Dinner At Lazy Cats Cafe

Finish the day at Lazy Cats Cafe , which is a super cool restaurant in Ubud with quirky decor. Their menu is packed with healthy and vegetarian food, juices and smoothie. You can also have some celebratory cocktails here!

DAY 2 – MT BATUR HIKE OR RICEFIELDS &TEMPLES

Mount Batur Sunrise Hike

#1 Mount Batur Sunrise Hike

The Sunrise hike of Mout Batur is probably one of the more adventurous Ubud attractions on this 4 days Ubud itinerary!

Ubud is a great base to climb Mt Batur because it’s located only about an hour drive from where the hike begins . Mount Batur, also known as Gunung Batur, rises to 1,717 metres above sea level.

I love experiencing things that involve effort because it gives me a sense of achievement, and this sunrise hike is no different. If you’re fairly fit and can follow a steep trail for around 2 hours , you’ll be able to do it.

It’s a strenuous hike, but at the end, you get rewarded with an incredible and tear-jerking sunrise view stretching over Mount Agung .

On the way back, there is a treat for you – a hot spring stop where you can soak those sore muscles and enjoy the magnificent view of the lake.

Many tours combine the hike with other activities , and KLOOK offers the best value-for-money tours by far. If you choose to do additional activities, the whole tour will take you the whole day.

You can either do it on day 2 of your Bali Ubud itinerary or if you have a spare day, make it into 5 days in Ubud itinerary.

ALTERNATIVE ITINERARY UBUD DAY 2

#1 Take A Yoga Class in Ubud Bali  

If hiking is not your thing for whatever reason, you can do morning yoga as a part of your Ubud itinerary 4 days. There is no better place to learn yoga if you’re a beginner than doing it in Bali. Ubud has a great selection of really good yoga places, including:

•    The Yoga Barn

•    Ubud Yoga House

•    Yoga Saraswati

Alternatively, you can book a spiritual experience in a yoga venue located in the nearby jungle. The package includes sunrise yoga with an experienced practitioner, and you can add another activity or experience, such as a floating breakfast.

#2 Tegallalang Rice Terraces 

After your morning activity, head to Ubud Rice Fields, which are the most scenic rice terraces that can be found in Bali; not surprisingly, they are a tourist hot spot and one of the most epic Ubud places to visit on your Ubud Bali itinerary. 

The best time to visit Tegallalang is early in the morning , not only to get a beautiful, soft light for photography but also to beat the crowds and avoid the heat.

Tegallalang is located a 20-minute drive from Ubud town . There is a small entrance fee of 10k IDR payable in a small ticket office . You can enter the rice fields from multiple locations off the busy street that has got some cafes and warungs alongside.

Don’t be surprised if you get asked to give a small donation by a farmer to enter their part of the rice paddies. Another 10-15k IDR should be sufficient.

In the rice fields, you can find the iconic Bali swing, which is one of the top Ubud attractions and one of the best things to do Ubud has to offer for Instagram fans .

It’s huge, and swinging on it can give you nice adrenaline rush, and it’s a pure treat, given the scenery! Not to mention the amazing shot of you in a flowy dress swinging over lush rice paddies! The price for this pleasure is 300k IDR which is a little steep if you asked me.

#3 Visit Alas Harum Bali

If you loved the rice terrace at Tegallalang, and want to spend some more time in the lush rice paddies, head to Alas Harum Bali, situated nearby.

Alas Harum park is another excellent stop on the list of the best things to see in Ubud Bali! The park offers various exciting activities, such as a giant swing, a zip line and a sky bike.

It also features different photo spots where you can record some awesome content for your social media. Expect lots of different bird nests, suspension bridges, a glass viewing terrace and the main attraction of the park – the gorilla-shaped cave !

There is also a fantastic beach club-like restaurant with an infinity pool overlooking the rice fields, where you can spend a relaxing few hours!

#4 Pura Tirta Empul Temple & Purification Ceremony 

Tirta Empul is a Hindu temple complex dating from 960 AD is a national cultural heritage. Tirta Empul means ‘holy water spring’, and it’s a natural water source that feeds the temple pools and ponds and is connected to Tukad Pakerisan River. 

What to expect?

The temple complex consists of a tropical, lush garden that welcomes you upon your arrival. There are various sculptures and pavilions for prayers, and the main part of the complex is a large bathing pool where the purification ritual takes place. You can either watch other people performing it or join in!

Cleans Ritual at Tirta Empul

During my visit, there was a festival in the temple, with many locals attending the purification ritual in the pool. I also decided to take part in the festivities.

I rented out a green robe with a belt and was directed to a changing room, where I put on my temple outfit and left my belongings in the locker.

Then, I joined the line of people waiting to do their ritual in refreshing spring water . Families with children, couples and a handful of curious tourists were waiting with me in the queue, exchanging glances and giggles on how cold the water was. Big, colourful fish were swimming amongst us. 

After a while, it was my turn. I submerged my head under the first sculptured sprout gashing with freezing water. I bowed with my hands crossed and prayed. I repeated the ritual 11 times under each source of water leaving the last two as instructed.

The experience was exhilarating. It was great to be able to participate in something that special. 

Tirta Empul temple is located 15 min drive from the Tegallalang rice fields and under half an hour from Ubud.

#5 Pura Gunung Kawi Sebatu

Another excellent temple to visit, which is NOT one of the popular Ubud tourist attractions, is Pura Gunung Kawi Sebatu. This holy place is also a water temple, but most tourists don’t know about this one , so if you come here, you are most likely only to meet a few locals.

Bring your sarong to cover your knees and shoulders if you want to go inside the temple. Here, you will find a spiritual complex dating back to the 11th century with shrines carved into cliffs and a large bathing pool .

The temple is located a 15-minute drive from Pura Tirta Empul , mentioned above, and a 30-minute drive from central Ubud. You can visit them both, or choose the one you prefer.

ENTRANCE | 20k IDR or $1

#6 Goa Gajah Cave Temple 

The next stop on your Ubud tour itinerary, is Goa Gajah or Elephant Cave, a 25-minute drive away from Tirta Empul and 30 minutes from Pura Gunung Kawi. It is believed to be built in the 9th century and nowadays it serves as a sanctuary . 

The temple grounds also include a lush garden with a small waterfall. A water pool with 3 bathing temple figures and water springing through them.

The cave itself has very interesting and intricate carving around its entrance. Inside, there is little space, it’s dark and the air is filled with incense . The whole experience of visiting the cave was a little scary and a little mystical. In the past, the cave served as a place of meditation. 

The entrance to the temple complex costs 50k IDR and includes sarong rental. 

#7 Cooking Class in Ubud 

To finish off the amazing day, take a cooking class in Ubud. There is plenty of restaurants in Ubud and around that offer great cooking experiences.

You normally get to pick your own ingredients from a farm and then you cook various courses of scrumptious Balinese specials! And the best part is that you get to eat it all. 

I always try to book a cooking class whenever I’m visiting a new country because I love food and it’s so much fun to be able to take part in cooking it. And you learn how to do it for when you’re back home.

Are you vegan or vegetarian like me? No worries, they’ve got menus for us too. Bali is heaven for a plant-based diet. 

DAY 3 – WATERFALLS & TEMPLE S

If you have more than 2 days, you can go beyond Ubud attractions and explore the east of Bali because Ubud is a great base to do it. Below, you’ll find the perfect day 3 out of 3 days Ubud itinerary.

#1 Pura Lempuyang Temple 

What to do in Ubud Bali on day 3? Take a day trip from Ubud and head east!

Start your day at Lempuyang Temple , which is one of the six most important sanctuaries in Bali and should be top on your itinerary for many good reasons.

Whether you want to explore Bali’s spirituality, religious customs or simply want to take the most epic photograph at the Lempuyang Gates of Heaven.

The temple is located 70km from Ubud which should take about 2 hours to get to . When you arrive, you will be asked to make a donation and hire a sarong.

The Gates of Heaven at Lempuyang Temple is one of the most instagrammable places in Bali . The temple is overlooking Mount Agung which can be capture between the gate for an epic photo. If you’re lucky you may see steam coming out of Mount Agung which will make your visit even more memorable.

I recommend making this your first stop of the day early in the morning. The place is probably the most popular in the whole of Bali, with people queuing for hours to take a photo at the Gates to Heaven. I admit I wanted it too and waited for 3 hours for my turn! It’s insane I agree but the photo I took is epic and I have no regrets!

#2 Tirta Gangga 

Tirta Gangga is also called the Water Palace and it’s a very interesting place to visit. The spot is quite touristy, the good sides of that are numerous cafes where you can take a break.

The garden is really pretty and if you’re into getting an Insta worthy shot , go ahead, and take one in the middle of the pond with some massive fish swimming around you (if you feed them that is)! You can buy fish food in front of the entrance to the complex.

The water palace gets really busy with people queuing to get a photo in the middle of the main pond with fish.

Beyond the main pool with huge, fat fish the garden is really charming and definitely worth a visit. There are beautiful bridges, interesting sculptures and pretty flowers. And you can sit down in a café overlooking it all and have an ice cream or a cold drink. 

Tirta Gangga Entrance Fee – 40k IDR or $3 .

Tirta Gangga is located a 21-minute drive from Pura Lempuyang.

#3 Tukad Cepung Waterfall 

Tukad Cepung Waterfall is one of my favourite waterfalls, and it’s the next stop on your Ubud travel itinerary. It’s special because it’s a waterfall in a cave ! It’s located just over an hour drive from Tirta Gangga.

There is a small entrance fee of 15k IDR and a steep path down to the waterfall. I recommend wearing water shoes as you’ll be walking through muddy and rocky water. Along the way, you’ll go past many little cafes where you can take a break and chill out.

Tukad Cepung is an hour drive from Ubud, and 1 hour 20 minutes drive from Tirta Gangga.

#4 Tibumana Waterfall 

Next, head to Tibumana Waterfall . What I love about this waterfall is that you can have a pleasant, refreshing dip in its waters after a day of sightseeing!

When you arrive, there is a short, a 10-minutes walk (not too strenuous) to reach the waterfall through beautiful greenery and bamboo bridges and a climb down through 100 steps.

There are small warungs where you can have a drink and watch the waterfall from a distance and a changing room if you fancy a swim. 

It is a tourist spot unfortunately with people queuing for a photo so it’s best to come here early morning before everyone else. But also, it’s not possible to be early in the morning everywhere so you need to decide which place is extra special for you to make that effort. 

Tibumana Entrance Fee – 15k IDR

Tibumana Waterfall is situated 30 minutes drive from Ubud and a 40-minute drive from Tukad Cepung Waterfall.

#5 Tegenungan Waterfall & Omma Beach Club

The last stop of the day of your Ubud itinerary is Tegenungan waterfall. Of course, if visiting three waterfalls in one day is way too much for you and you rather just take it slow, skip one or two of them.

Tegenungan waterfall is probably one of the busiest waterfalls out of the ones mentioned here, and you will need to climb a pretty steep staircase to access it. It is allowed to swim in the waterfall pool, and there even is a space where you can catch some sun after the refreshing dip.

There is also a newly built Omma beach club , where you can spend the rest of the afternoon. Just be aware of the minimum spend of 500k IDR or $66 per person to get access to the infinity pool.

Tegenungan waterfall is located a 30-minute drive from Tibumana and 20 minutes from central Ubud.

DAY 4 – NORTH OF UBUD

If you’re staying longer, you probably wonder what to do in Ubud on your fourth day? Staying longer will allow you to do more day trips from Ubud. Here is day 4 out of 4 days in Ubud itinerary!

#1 Ulun Danu Temple 

This northern Bali, Hindu temple also known as Pura Beratan, is located on the shores of Lake Bratan, in the northern part of Bali, 48 km (or 1 hour 10 minutes) away from Ubud.

It is another temple taken straight from a Bali postcard picture. It’s one of the most important temples in Bali and the Pura Ulun Danu complex consists of 6 different temples.

There is an entrance fee of 30k IDR . The monument is very busy with local people paying a religious visit and international tourists alike.

#2 Handara Gate

Handara Gate is one of the most Instagramable places in Bali . In Balinese culture, gates like this one have an important meaning, signifying coming from the outside world to the holy place, usually a temple. Ironically, this gate is an entrance to the golf course.

What to expect at Handara Gate

Expect to pay an entrance or shall I say a photo fee of 30k IDR and wait between 30 and 60 minutes in the queue to take a picture at the gate! I know, it’s absolutely crazy. I must admit that I succumbed to this madness and waited my turn in the queue!

In my defence, however, the magnificent Handara Gate and the lush mountains in the backdrop create some dramatic scenery for a breath-taking and unique photo! So, no regrets on my part!

#3 Wanagiri Hidden Hills & Bali Swing 

You probably have seen a photo of a giant swing over a lake on your Instagram feed? Well, you will have the opportunity to take your very own here. The place is not far from the Handara Gate, it charges 100k IDR entrance fee .

In that price, you will have access to a giant swing, a nest and other photosets. Be aware that on the same road, other photo stations are imitating the Wanagiri Hidden Hills. They are nowhere near as good as the original but it’s a way of making extra money for the locals.

#4 Banyumala Twin Waterfall 

Banyumala Twin Waterfall is situated a further 40 minutes’ drive from Pura Ulun Danu. It’s not overly crowded and the surrounding nature is really beautiful. Take a refreshing swim in the waterfall water!

There is an entrance fee of 30k IDR (2$) . From the car park, it takes 15 min walk to reach the waterfall. You can also get a ride back up the hill for 25k IDR.

#5 Dinner At Dinner at Taman Dedari

Finish off this incredible day of sightseeing with a traditional Balinese dinner at Taman Dedari. This large restaurant has two incredible statues to check out!

ENTRANCE | free, but you will be expected to order at least a drink.

Best Ubud Restaurants & Bars

Moksa Ubud – Asian fusion cuisine that offers vibrant, healthy and beautifully presented dishes including tempeh ribs, curries and some raw vegan options too. The restaurant is located a short drive away from Ubud in beautiful country surroundings. They grow their vegetables and even make their own ceramics! Location.

Avocado Warung Ubud – If you love avocados as much as I do then you will love this place! All dishes come with avocado! Their veggie burger with BBQ jackfruit, avocado and beetroot was to die for, washed down by refreshing kombucha! The restaurant is located on Jl. Tirta Tawar, a 5-minute scooter or Grab a ride from Ubud town. Location.

Juice Ja Café Ubud Bali – is located in Ubud town. It offers healthy, locally grown food with plenty of vegan and vegetarian options. They also support a local charity to empower women and children in Bali. Location.

No Mas Bar – is my favourite bar in Ubud, love its quirky décor and vibe. It serves great cocktails and good pub food like burgers and fries. It’s located on Jl. Monkey Forest and the bar have themed nights and live music events too.  Location.

How many days in Ubud is enough?

How many days Ubud is worth staying? Well, this really depends on how long in Ubud you can stay. I come to Ubud every year, and always find more incredible things to do.

I’d say, in order to tick off the main things to do in Bali Ubud, you need at least 2 full days . If you have 3 days in Ubud that will allow you to explore either East or North of Ubud in addition to Ubud town and the surrounding areas. 

Getting around Ubud

Public transport in Bali is virtually non-existing. The road system is not very well developed and Bali, including Ubud, often suffers from bad traffic . What should be an hour drive can easily take double. So please have that in mind while planning your logistics.

With a private driver

The most convenient way to get from one area to another is hiring a private driver, especially when you want to follow a whole day itinerary. In Bali, everyone is a driver so it should be fairly easy to get one. You can ask your hotel/hostel or book one online. The going rate for a driver is around 900k IDR for 8 hours including petrol and small parking fees.

With Go Jek or Grab

Another way to get around Ubud and beyond is by downloading a Go Jek or Grab travel app . They are the Asian equivalent of UBER. I’ve had a good experience with them being reliable and much cheaper than normal taxis , especially the ones ordered at hotels where a hotel gets a cut of your fare.

You normally need to pay by cash to the driver. And they also offer a food delivery service to your hotel room, which can be really handy after a busy day of exploring.

On a scooter

For smaller distances within one area like Ubud, I recommend hiring a scooter. It should cost around 60k IDR for a whole day . It can be a fun way of moving around as long as the traffic is not too bad.

I rode a scooter for the first time in my life in Uluwatu. The area is not very busy and I found it fairly easy. Today, I ride my scooter everywhere!

Ubud is a little busier but if you’ve done it before, you will be fine. But please, if you don’t feel comfortable, don’t do it and get a Grab ride instead! There are so many tourists in Bali that rent powerful scooters such as Nmax, without previous experience and crush them!

Scooter safety in Bali

If it’s your first time, make sure you are shown how to operate your scooter. Check that breaks and lights work correctly. Always wear a helmet! Remember to drive on the left side (same as in the UK).

If you need to top up your fuel, petrol is sold in glass bottles on the side of the road. It’s cheap but doesn’t last very long. Always make sure you’ve got enough petrol to come back to your accommodation.

If you’re planning to watch the sunset, remember that you’ll be coming back in the dark, again make sure your lights work and your phone has enough battery so that you can use maps and get safely back to your hotel. Also, after dark, there is way more traffic so if you’re not so confident, consider another mode of transport.

Most points of interest in Bali can be found on Google Maps and are relatively easy to navigate to. When you’re on your motorbike, don’t look at your phone but put your headphones on and listen to the audio navigation.

The cheapest way to use the internet on your phone in Bali is to get a local SIM card . You can choose, how many GBs you want and the card costs around $5 . The best places to buy your card are specialised SIM shops, where you can buy your internet top up and they will set everything up on your phone so you don’t need to worry.

Be aware! SIM cards sold at the airport are a lot more expensive . Also, when you get a taxi from Denpasar Airport, your driver may stop in a shop for you to buy one. The prices of those SIM cards are at least 5 times more expensive and your ‘helpful’ driver gets a cut for bringing you to the store. Simply, politely turn down the offer and ask the driver to take you to your accommodation without any more detours.

Temple rules

Bali is rich in culture and spirituality. When visiting temples in Bali, please be respectful and follow the rules:

• Dress code- you will be required to cover your knees and arms. You can normally rent a sarong for 10k IDR.

• No kissing or showing another type of affection at the temple grounds is allowed.

• Women during their menstruation are not allowed in the temple grounds. They are considered impure.

• Respectful behaviour is expected. This applies in particular during a religious ceremony. If you happen to visit at that time, be quiet and take photos from a distance not to interfere with the local customs.

• These are common sense but no harm in repeating it. Don’t climb statues, tread on small offerings on the ground and don’t enter areas that say not to enter.

Rai International Airport Advise

Rai International airport located in Denpasar area is the closest Bali airport to Ubud in Bali, in fact, it is the only airport in Bali.

I know how overwhelming it can be to arrive at the airport in a foreign country that you’re visiting for the first time, especially as a solo female traveller. So here are a few tips to get you through it painlessly:

• There are official taxi stands at the airport after customs in the arrival area where you can get a fixed-price taxi depending on the area you want to get to.

• If you’re travelling solo and you are worried talk to the taxi counter and get a fixed fair or pre-arrange the pickup with your hotel. This option will be more expensive but it will give you peace of mind after a long flight.

• Alternatively, you can talk to a driver outside but agree on the price before you get into their car.

• There is currently a fancy GRAB lounge located just outside the arrival terminal. They offer the best rates and are super safe. The ride to Canggu or Seminyak costs around 250k IDR or $17.

• If you don’t have any Indonesian money, use an ATM at the airport to withdraw enough money to pay for a taxi. The maximum you can withdraw is 3m IDR per transaction.

While it is important to have some cash to pay for food at small warungs, drinks, tips and small souvenirs, I would never carry too much cash with me. Also, check with all your hotels if they take cards. Some small hotels in Bali will only take cash payments, so check with them and prepare.

This is such an awesome guide! We´ve been to Ubod and spent a couple of days there – it was actually one of our favourite spots in Bali, despite the fact tehre were quite a lot of tourists at the time of our visit. But I also see now there are so many more great things we could have done haha, thanks for sharing, I have some ideas for our next visit 🙂

It is my favourite place in Bali too 🥰. Interestingly, when I first visited it was empty because the volcano was about to erupt and people were cancelling their trips but I still went ahead with mine.

Despite it being touristy, Ubud is one of my favorite places in Bali. There is just something about it that keeps me coming back for more. Clearly I have to go back because I have not covered everything you mentioned in your guide haha! Any excuse, right :).
