The WFA National tours sell out quickly and are restricted to just 25 participants. This allows us to provide a comprehensive study of the campaign in an informal group, enjoying a social weekend on the 'old front line'.  

There are two tours this year.

Today, 1 December 2023, we are adding a Battle of the Bulge 80th Anniversary Tour , 14-20 December 2024. We normally don’t run tours that coincide with major commemorations, but we’re going to try this one. The format is slightly different than our standard tour, because we are setting aside two half days for commemorations and we’ll be visiting a famous German Christmas Market, which will allow you to do some holiday shopping too. We hope you will find this mix of history and commemoration attractive!

Researchers and historians Graham Gaulke and Patrick Brion will share their knowledge of the Third Reich’s efforts to move key armaments production underground to avoid Allied bombardment in a Third Reich Underground—Rockets, Aircraft and More Tour . This is a side of Third Reich History in Thuringia, Germany that is not often covered by a battlefield tour, and it will feature considerable time underground in quarries and mines. It will also examine the issue of concentration camp labor.

The reburial ceremony for well-known U.S. Air Service Aviator, Captain Hamilton Coolidge, 94 th Aero Squadron, will be the catalyst for the September 2024 Hamilton Coolidge Reburial: WW1 Airfield and Battlefield Tour . It is rare that WW1 soldiers are reburied, but the erosion caused by the Aire River near his current grave is relentless. This tour will also explore how the Air Service supported the ground war by including a mix of airfield and battlefield sites.

Knee Deep Into History is offering two overview tours, which cover more battlefields in less depth. The “Over There”: WW1 Doughboy Overview Tour will cover all major WW1 American Expeditionary Forces battlefields, including Cantigny, the Hindenburg Line, the Marne, the St. Mihiel Salient and the Meuse-Argonne, while The American GI 80th Anniversary Tour: Normandy to the Ardennes  will cover key WW2 battlefields, including Normandy, Arnhem, the Hürtgen Forest and the Ardennes.

With the 80 th Anniversary of the Normandy Landings, KDIH is offering a June ’44 Normandy Landings and Airborne Tour just after the June anniversary. KDIH rarely offers tours during key anniversaries because crowds and VIP travel restrictions limit access to historic sites.

Standard WW1 tours will include a “They Shall Not Pass”: Verdun 1916-17 Tour and “A Rendezvous with Death”: The Somme and Flanders Fields Tour .

Setting up a tour is a major logistical exercise.  Subject to our schedules and availability, we are happy to work with you to set up a meaningful private tour for your family or group. We can arrange tours for most budget, interest and physical ability levels. We can also build the tour as a fundraiser, where a certain portion of each participant’s payment is donated to your organization! We raised $3,100 for the Connecticut Heritage Foundation’s Digging Into History program as a result of our 2023 102nd Infantry Regiment / Yankee Division tour.

Our  most popular  Western Front Tour! This 4-day small-group tour provides the perfect opportunity to explore the Australian battlefields of the Western Front in comfort and convenience. We will walk in the footsteps of the Anzacs on all the main battlefield sites in the Somme, Flanders and the Ypres Salient. The itinerary has been personally designed by Mat McLachlan, and the expert historians who escort this tour have been hand-picked by Mat. The Western Front Explorer Tour is the next best thing to being there with Mat himself!

Either begin your tour in Paris or Lille, a great option if you are catching the Eurostar from London or travelling from elsewhere in Europe! With weekly departures between April and November, you are sure to find a tour date that fits perfectly with your plans.

Day 1 > Tour commences, Ypres

Welcome to our Western Front tour! The tour group will assemble in Paris/Lille (note all tours during the Paris Olympics 2024 will depart from Lille to avoid Paris road closures. Your meeting point and time will be confirmed ahead of your tour – anticipate 8:30am from Paris or 12-noon from Lille). Our first stop is the very moving 1916 battlefield of Fromelles, where Australia lost 5533 men during its first action on the Western Front. While here we will visit the Australian Memorial Park, VC Corner Cemetery (the only all-Australian cemetery in France), the site of the Australian mass grave at Pheasant Wood and the Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Cemetery, where 250 Australian and British soldiers were laid to rest in 2010. We will also visit the Fromelles Museum which tells the story of Australia’s disastrous involvement in the battle of Fromelles in 1916. Our final destination is the town of Ypres, our home for the next two nights. Between 1914 and 1918 Ypres was completely destroyed by shellfire and came to symbolise the horror of the First World War. In the evening we will enjoy a walking tour with our Historian around the rebuilt town, before coming together for a welcome dinner.   (D)

Day 2 > The Ypres Salient

The Ypres Salient was a bulge in the front line that curved around Ypres for most of the war. More than a million men were killed or wounded trying to gain control of this small patch of ground. Today we will explore the Australian battlefields in the Salient, places where the Anzacs made history in 1917. Our first stop will be the Passchendaele Museum, a provocative collection of relics and displays that chronicles the fighting in Flanders. We will then visit the 5th Australian Division Memorial at Polygon Wood, where we will see the graves of Private Hunter and Sergeant Calder, the two Australian soldiers who featured in Mat McLachlan’s documentary ‘Lost in Flanders’. Lunch is included at a local cafe. We then get a taste of the devastation caused by four years of continuous artillery fire at the cratered landscape of Hill 60, before visiting Tyne Cot, the world’s largest Commonwealth war cemetery. Tyne Cot sits in the heart of one of the most horrific battlefields of the war – Passchendaele. Our final stop today is at the German Cemetery at Langemark, where we will learn about the men on the other side of the line. As we drive back to our hotel, we will see the magnificent Canadian memorial at Langemark, marking the spot where poison gas was first used in the war. This evening we will visit the Menin Gate where the names of 54,000 missing British and Commonwealth soldiers are recorded, for the moving Last Post ceremony. The Ypres fire brigade has performed this bugle ceremony every day and in all-weather since the memorial opened in 1927. The only interruption was during the four years of German occupation during the Second World War – the ceremony recommenced on the day the town was liberated. Two passengers will be invited to lay a wreath on behalf of our group.  (B, L)

Day 3 > Ypres to the Somme

Today we leave Ypres and travel south towards the battlefields of the Somme. Today we visit the battlefield of Bullecourt, where Australia lost 10,000 men in two great battles in 1917, and pay our respects to them at the Slouch Hat memorial in the centre of town and the Australian Memorial Park on the site of the German front line. In the afternoon we will visit Pozieres, scene of the most costly battle in Australia’s history. 23,000 men were killed or wounded here in six weeks of fighting and we will pay tribute to them at the 1st Division Memorial and the Windmill. We will then see Mouquet Farm, where the Australians fought a bitter campaign against the Germans in August 1916. Our final stop is the imposing Thiepval Memorial, which commemorates more than 70,000 British soldiers missing from the Somme fighting. After checking in to our central Somme hotel we will have free time to enjoy dinner. A packed picnic lunch is included today. (B, L)

Day 4 > The Somme, tour concludes

Today we will explore the killing fields of the Somme, where Australian troops performed magnificently in 1918. Our first visit is to Adelaide Cemetery, where Australia’s Unknown Soldier lay before being reinterred in Canberra in 1993. We will then visit the Victoria School in Villers-Bretonneux where a sign entreats that the schoolchildren ‘Do Not Forget Australia’.  We will also visit the excellent Franco-Australian Museum at the school. We then travel to the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, where the names of almost 11,000 Australians missing in France are recorded and also visit the new Sir John Monash Interpretive Centre, which tells the story of Australia’s achievements on the Western Front. Our next stop is the Australian Memorial Park at Hamel, scene of a great Australian victory orchestrated by General John Monash on July 4, 1918. We then farewell the battlefields to drive to our drop off point, arriving at our drop-off location at approximately 5pm (Lille/Paris pending your tour date). (B)

2024 Battlefield Tour

In the footsteps of titans: salonika and the great war, friday, sept. 13 – wednesday, sept. 18, 2024.

Venture into the crossroads of mythology and modernity with the National WWI Museum and Memorial as we explore the cultural and historical significance of the Salonika Front. From the dense forests and mountain landscapes of beautiful Greece, we will trace the forgotten trench lines of some of the war’s most remote battlefields and discover the global stories of this lesser-known theater rich in geopolitical importance as the “cradle of democracy.” The tour begins and ends in Thessaloniki (SKG) with five nights of lodging in the scenic Grecian countryside.

Please note:

This tour traverses rugged terrain and includes locations with steep and unpaved grounds. Unlike previous battlefield tours, much of this battlefield is inaccessible by vehicle. Participants MUST be able to walk a minimum of 6 miles without assistance and be able to carry their own equipment needed for hiking.

Day 1: sept. 13.

Starting in Thessaloniki, the group’s first introduction to the campaign will be the Salonika (Lembet Road) Military Cemetery, containing personnel from all nations. The group will travel north to study Birdcage Line, constructed by the British Army in 1916, and end the day at the Doiran Memorial.

Overnight Doiran – Dinner included

Day 2: Sept. 14

Northbound from Doiran, the group will explore the furthest extent of the French Army’s advance in 1915, passing through Gradsko and Krivolak. Stopping at the Demir Kapija tunnel on the way back to Doiran, the group will study the Dec. 1915 retreat before finishing the day at Lake Doiran.

Day 3: Sept. 15

Most of the day’s travels will be on flat ground and near the group’s hotel in Doiran, examining key points of action in the Battles of Doiran like La Tortue, Hill 340, the Hilt and the Petit Couronné.

Day 4: Sept. 16

A full day’s hike to Devil’s Eye and its views over Pip Ridge, the scene of the final decisive battle of Salonika in Sept. 1918. En route to the site, the group will pass through the Bulgarian reserve positions, artillery and command bunkers, as well as the T Line bunkers and an isolated British Divisional Memorial.

Day 5: Sept. 17

Trekking through the Struma Valley, the group will explore the various actions at Tumbitza Farm, specifically the 27th Division attacks, as well as the British battery positions at Triada (Dragos) and the Bulgarian positions at Palio Castro. For the final evening, the group will return to Thessaloniki.

When and where will we meet the group?

All participants should meet at the designated meeting place and time, provided with your tour information. It is recommended to arrive in the destination city the day before the tour, giving you ample time to meet at the gathering place. Once you receive the green light to purchase your airfare, please forward your arrival time and flight number to the Museum and Memorial's Learning Coordinator at [email protected] . This will assist guides in roll call before starting the tour.

What sites will we be visiting?

Please see the itinerary sent by the guides. The itinerary is loose, allowing flexibility in visiting additional sites.

What hotels will we be staying in? What amenities are included?

Please see the itinerary sent by the guides. Breakfast, WiFi and laundry services are generally available.

How many meals are included with my registration?

Breakfasts and at least one group dinner are covered under your registration. Lunches and other dinners are not included, unless otherwise specified. Please notify us immediately if you have any special dietary requirements. For most destinations, lunches will be approximately €15-€20 and dinners approximately €35.

How will we travel between different sites/cities?

Participants will travel by coach (bus) between cities and will walk around most sites.

What amenities are included with the bus?

The bus will have A/C and heating, a refrigerator, a restroom and complimentary water.

What should I wear?

• Comfortable outdoor wear (e.g. T-shirts, jeans, shorts.) Avoid wearing clothing with large, loud logos.
• Sweater or lightweight fleece
• Appropriate footwear (e.g. walking shoes). A change of footwear is also advised.
• Waterproof outer layers (light jacket)
• Hat and sunscreen

Most over-the-counter medicines can be obtained abroad, though they may have different names than those in the U.S. One of the guides, where possible, will accompany you to a pharmacy (widely available) to assist with replacements, if needed.

I am staying in Europe after the tour. Can I be dropped off at my hotel after the tour?

Unfortunately, due to the size and schedule of the coach, you will not be able to be dropped off at your hotel by bus. If you need assistance returning to your hotel:

• See if your hotel has a shuttle service—communicate when and where you’ll need to be picked up.
• If a shuttle is unavailable, the guides can assist you in finding a taxi.
• If you’d prefer to use public transportation, the guides can assist you in getting the correct ticket/line.

How safe will I be touring in the Battlefield Tour regions?

Battle Honours hosts nearly 60 tours yearly and has been in the battlefield touring business for 15 years—many of the guides are former military or police. They have thoroughly assessed any potential risks that may occur during the tour—you will not be visiting any areas that may compromise your safety. Security is both their specialty and priority—you will be in very capable hands. To secure your money and passport, we recommend investing in a wearable money belt/pouch.

How much spending money should I bring with me?

We recommend bringing at least €200 in local currency, but how much you bring is truly a personal preference. Please make sure to notify your banks that you will be out of the country if you plan on taking your debit/credit/bank cards.

• VISA is most readily accepted; American Express/Discover are not accepted at most places.
• Cards issued by a smaller, regional bank that don’t have backing from larger institutions will not likely be accepted.
• ATMs are accessible everywhere for cash withdrawal—withdrawal fees/exchange rates may apply.

How can I use my cellphone while abroad?

You will need to contact your service provider to arrange an international plan (plans vary by provider.) To avoid roaming charges, we recommend turning off apps needing WiFi data before departure. Set your phone to “Airplane Mode” before boarding your overseas flight.

I have an ancestor who fought in World War I in this particular region. Can I see the sites pertinent to their involvement?

Yes! The guides cater the tour itinerary to these requests. Send the name, rank, and any key military/occupational identification of your WWI ancestor to Clive Harris and Mike Sheil approximately two months before departure, to give ample time for research.

Can I bring my ancestor’s personal items (a diary, photographs or other memorabilia)?

Yes, please do! These really help bring your ancestor’s story come to life on the battlefield. Please let the guides know what items you’ll be bringing before packing them.

How much can I expect to walk during the tour?

Participants can expect to walk multiple miles each day across uneven, unpaved terrain. Please make sure you have comfortable, sturdy walking shoes. Battlefield maps will be provided by guides on-site and via email to the participants.

What is the climate of the region we’ll be visiting?

Generally, weather will be warm to mild, and potentially rainy. Feel free to pack a light jacket for the evening and a day pack that includes snacks as you travel off the beaten path.

About Clive Harris

Raised in Hertfordshire, Clive developed a lifelong fascination with history. He spent seven years with the Royal Corps of Signals, serving operationally overseas with the 1st Armoured Division in BAOR — an Infantry attachment with the Royal Green Jackets, in Cyprus, Germany and France — and finally taking an instructor’s post in the Signals Wing of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. On leaving the army he joined his local Constabulary, serving 11 years in their Force Operations Room as a specialist communications officer and control room manager. In 1998, he began working as a speaker, writer, researcher and battlefield guide and since then has guided groups to the Somme, Ypres, Arras, Mons, Cambrai, The Hindenburg Line, Verdun, and Gallipoli for the Great War, as well as Normandy, Arnhem, The Italian Campaign, and of course the London Blitz for the Second World War. Clive is a Badged Member of the Guild of Battlefield Guides (No33) and also a member of the British Commission for Military History.

Mike is the award-winning curator of Fields of Battle, Lands of Peace 1914-1918. After studying Geography at Oxford, in the early 1970s Mike began his career as a photojournalist covering “the Troubles” in Northern Ireland. Here he became associated with the New York picture agency, Black Star, and over thirty years later he is still in the fortunate position of being paid to do what he loves doing — taking photographs. Mike has visited over 60 countries around the world, working for a wide range of clients such as ABC-TV, BBC, Anti-Slavery International, British Red Cross, European Commission, National Geographic , The New York Times , Shell, Time and Time Life .

World War 1 Tours

2014-2018 marked a very special period for World War One Battlefields as it was the centenary of the First World War – known by many military enthusiasts as The Great War. There is a great selection of Battlefield tours available to pay homage to the fallen and honour those marvellous heroic acts of men and women who laid down their lives so we could live in peace today.

Between 1914 and 1918, Flanders Fields was the scene for some of the bloodiest battles of the First World War. It is thought that about a million soldiers were either wounded, missing or killed in action. Whilst thousands of ordinary people were left homeless, WW1 devastated entire cities and villages with some completely beyond recognition. Flanders Fields itself has become a region dedicated to the events of WW1 with hundreds of monuments and cemeteries that all have great historical significance to people from across the world. There are a variety of interactive museums as well, each explaining the different aspects of conflict and outlining the implications of war in general. Here are just a few of the sights you can see when you take a guided WW1 Battlefield tour:

Flanders Field Museum, Ypres: This has recently been renovated to mark the centenary of WW1 featuring stories from ordinary people who were affected by the tragedy of war. The museum itself has doubled in size and has a variety of objects and documents connected with WW1. Climb to the top of the Bell Tower where you can experience views of the region that was once destroyed by war.

Battlefields of Flanders, Belgium: This was the main WW1 battlefront for the British. More than 200,000 soldiers from the British and Commonwealth forces died here. See the trenches at Sanctuary Wood with its museum before visiting the Tyne Cot Cemetery. You will see the Messines Ridge sector and the Irish Peace Tower which is dedicated to the role of the Irish troops. Study the Christmas Truce at Ploegsteert and visit the memorial before observing 'The Last Post' at Menin Gate.

'The Last Post' at Menin Gate, Belgium: Every evening at 8pm, a moving ceremony takes place underneath the arch of the Menin Gate and this is a simple service dedicated to the 55,000 soldiers who fought but whose bodies were never found.

French Flanders and Artois, France: This region of Northern France was the most badly damaged by the WW1 battles particularly Arras, Bailleul and St Omer among others. Anyone who visits these battlefields, will find a variety of small museums, and over 300 cemeteries to visit with monuments dedicated to thousands of Allied and German war casualties.

The Somme, France Located in Picardy, the battlefields can be found in an area from St. Quentin in the east to the coast of Amiens. The Somme is a particularly haunting place to visit. You can see the Historical Museum at Péronne and the largest British Mine Crater at La Boisselle. There's the preserved trenches at Newfoundland Park, the memorial at Thiepval, the Ulster Tower and the Serre where Wilfred Owen fought and took inspiration for his war poems.

The Western Front, Belgium and France: This was a stretch of battlefields covering landscapes from south west Belgium through to north east and eastern France. The varied landscape of this area had a huge effect on the strategy and tactics used by both the Allies and the Germans.

Ypres Salient Battlefields, Belgium: It's hard to believe as you stand in the Main Square and observe ornate buildings that this area was completely flattened by the battles of WW1 but once the war was over, the area was rebuilt. There are a variety of museums and memorials dedicated to the war effort.

Arras, France Visit the Wellington Quarries, a complex of tunnels that were used by the British during WW1. Pay homage at the Arras Memorial. See the preserved trench system at Vimy Ridge that was captured from the Germans by the Canadians. The memorial on Hill 145 and its museum are impressive and must be visited.

Marne and Verdun, France: This was the turning point in WW1 which prevented the Germans from advancing in to Paris. Visit Fort La Pompelle which remained on the front line for four years. Visit the Russian Cemetery, the Champagne-Marne Museum, Sommepy Trenches, Navarin Farm and the American Memorial on Blanc Mont. Admire an outstanding collection of uniforms and equipment from WW1 on display at the Meaux Museum. Discover the story of the 'Doughboys', the American Memorial and the Dormans Memorial at Château-Thierry. Visit Meuse-Argonne at Verdun where you'll see the largest American Cemetery in Europe.

Mons, Belgium: This is where the very first shots of WW1 were fired by the British in August 1914. Start at Casteau where Corporal Thomas fired the first shots. Visit Nimy and walk along the front defended by 4 th Battalion Royal Fusiliers to Nimy Bridge where the first two Victoria Crosses were won. Cross over the border into Feignies to Fort Leveau, an excellent war museum. Follow the route of the attacks from Valenciennes to Nouvelles and visit the St Symphorien Military Cemetery.

World War 2 Tours

The Second World War was a global battle fought between 1939 and 1945, whereby more than 100 million people served in a variety of military units from over 30 different countries. World War II is remembered as being one of the deadliest conflicts with over 50 million fatalities and most of these were caused by the Holocaust and the use of nuclear weapons. There have been lots of debates as to when WW2 actually started but the majority believe it began on 1 st September 1939 when the Germans invaded Poland leading to the French and the British declaring war on Germany. Here is a selection of sights you can see when on WW2 Battlefield Tours:

D-Day Landing Beaches, Normandy: Start your Battlefield tour with the British Sector and visit Pegasus Bridge where you can see Café Gondré and the Pegasus Memorial Museum. Pay homage at the Ranville Commonwealth Cemetery and Bréville Ridge. Visit the Merville Gun Battery, Sword Beach, Juno Beach, Arromanches and the Mulberry Harbour Museum. The American Sector is known to be highly emotive especially the American Cemetery and tragic Omaha Beach. Visit the Airborne Museum at Ste. Mère Église, Utah Beach, the German Peace Garden Cemetery, the headland at Pointe du Hoc and the huge guns at the Battery at Longues-sur-Mer. Gold Beach is where the only Victoria Cross of D-Day was won and see the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery at Bayeux.

Operation Market Garden, Netherlands and Germany: General Montgomery attempted to shorten World War Two and this visit follows the ill-fated operations of his plan. Begin by visiting the German Cemetery at Ysselsteyn and travel through to Son, Veghel, Uden and Grave. See the National Liberation Museum and the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery at Groesbeek that lists the names of 1,103 servicemen who were killed, many of them at Arnhem, who have no known grave. Explore Heelsum and Wolfheze to the bridge at Arnhem. See St Elizabeth Hospital where some of the most bitter fighting took place and Acacialaan where the Victoria Cross was won by Sergeant Baskeyfield. Conclude your visit at the 1 st Airborne Museum in Oosterbeek which was once the headquarters for the Arnhem Division.

Battle of the Bulge, Belgium: Start your Battlefield tour in the north of 'The Bulge' visiting the American War Cemetery at Henri-Chappelle. Follow the route of the 'Kampfgruppe Peiper'  through Bullingen, Thirimont, Baugnez and Ligneuville. See the scene of the Malmedy massacre. Travel to La Gleize to explore the Battle of the Bulge Museum before visiting Stourmont, Werbomont and the American War Memorial. Visit the German Cemetery at Houffalize before entering the British Sector at Bure and Bande. See the location of the infamous roadside cellar massacre by the SS and pay homage to the fallen at the Commonwealth Graves Commission Cemetery in Hotton.

The Maginot Line, Belgium: This tour focuses upon the fortifications in Belgium such as the famous Eben Emael that came under assault by German Airborne troops. Take a guided tour of Fort d'Aubin-Neufchâteau which was extensively damaged in 1940. Explore the amazing system of bunkers and tunnels at Ouvrage Fermont where you descend in the original lifts and take a ride on an old ammunition train. Visit Villy la Ferte which also saw some heavy fighting in May 1940. You can also visit Ouvrage Immerhof and Ouvrage Hackenberg where you can see the cemetery at Luttange which is where the first soldier of WW2 is buried.

In addition to guided Battlefield tours of World War One and World War Two, there is the option to broaden your knowledge of other military battles that have taken place across the world. Discover how the military campaigns of the Napoleonic War led to the downfall of Napoleon Bonaparte. Travel to Vietnam where the conflicts there lasted for almost 30 years or join a tour to Washington DC and Gettysburg where the American Civil War threatened to tear the nation apart. Here is just a selection of places you can visit:

The Peninsular War, Portugal and Spain: This was a series of military campaigns that took place during the Napoleonic Wars between 1808 and 1814. It resulted in victory for the Allies and led to the downfall of Napoleon Bonaparte. View Wellesley's positions along the Rio Alberche and Portina Brook. See the battlefield memorial on the slopes of Cerro de Medellin Hills. Travel to Badajoz, the scene of some of the bloodiest battles and where Viscount Wellington apparently wept at the sight of so many fallen. Also visit Fort San Cristobal where you can view Badajoz below, explore the ramparts and learn about the French and German garrison. Visit 'Bloody Albuera' commanded by General Beresford where you can view the 'Fatal Hill'. Travel to Salamanca and visit Cuidad Rodrigo, the Battlefield of Fuentes de Onoro and walk around selected battle routes in the hills surrounding Los Arapiles. You will also get to see the Mendoza Bridge, Tres Puentes Bridge, walk the riverbank of Bidassoua, the church at Arcangues, the Battle of St Pierre, the Palace of Fontainebleu and the Battle of Orthez.

Gallipoli Battlefields, Turkey: Arrive in Gallipoli Town that overlooks the Dardanelles where you'll visit Helles Memorial and the Turkish Gun Battery. See the location of the British Landings at Capes Helles, Krithia and visit the V Beach Cemetery and the X Beach. Visit ANZAC Beach which is where soldiers from the Australian and New Zealand forces landed, see the Lone Pine Memorial and Cemetery. See preserved Turkish trenches at Chunuk Bair and see where the first Australian won the Victoria Cross in WW1. Head to Suvla Bay where some of the first British troops came into action during August 1915. Look at the history of the 'Lost Battalion', visit the new Suvla Bay Museum in Anafarta, see the peaceful Shrapnel Valley Cemetery and walk up to Shell Green where Australians played a cricket game in full view of the Turks!

Battle of Waterloo, Belgium: Travel to Belgium where you can attend a variety of Battle Re-enactments marking the anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. See what a British or French Battle Camp would have looked like back in 1815 where re-enactments will take place so you can witness drill, camp life and see equipment on display. Visit the Wellington Museum in Waterloo and the farms of La Haye Sainte and Hougoumont where you can walk in the footsteps of soldiers. Take a look inside the Lion Mount Visitors Centre followed by a climb to the top of Lion Mound which provides fabulous views of the battle locations below.

Vietnam, Asia Follow the story of a conflict that lasted for nearly 30 years which was escalated further by the landings of American Troops in Da Nang. There are a variety of sights to be seen when joining a guided battlefield tour of Vietnam such as Ho Chi Minh mausoleum, the B-52 Memorial Lake and the One Pillar Pagoda. Travel down Kham Thien Street which was completely destroyed by the Americans in 1972 and see the 'Hanoi Hilton' a prison where American pilots were kept. Take a walking tour of Hoi An. Transfer to Hue and visit China Beach and Red Beach where American pilots landed and where some of the bloodiest battles took place. In Dong Hoi, see the former US Marine Base at Khe Sanh and the Da Krong Bridge as well as the Vinh Moc Tunnels. You will also get to follow the famous Ho Chi Minh Trail, the Khe Gat runway, the Cu Chi Tunnels and meet a Vietnamese War Veteran.

The American Civil War, USA: This was one of the deadliest battles in the history of America and took place between 1861 and 1865. Start your guided battlefield tour in Washington DC to learn about the history of Civil War with a visit to the Museum of American History. Travel to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania where you can see the location of the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863 and where Abraham Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg Address. Visit the battlefield of Antietam and Harpers Ferry where the slave uprising led to the start of the Civil War. Travel to Lynchburg, Virginia for a tour of the town that was the scene for the Battle of Lynchburg in 1864. Appomattox is where General Lee surrendered to Lieutenant Ulysees S. Grant. This surrender led to the Southern States ending their attempt at creating a separate nation. It also brought about the end of the Civil War where the 13 th , 14 th  and 15 th  amendments were added to the Constitution.

What do I wear? Make sure you dress according to the weather - a rain coat is always useful, just in case. Wear comfy shoes as there may be walking involved depending on your tour and the ground may not always be completely even.

What to take with you? Take a bag with you to carry a few essentials such as a bottle of water, camera, binoculars and anything else you may need. There are no shops around the cemeteries so it’s best to be prepared.

Will there be opportunities to explore? It depends on the tour as to whether you can explore in your own time as there are lots of different itineraries which will all have varied schedules. Some tours include knowledgeable tour guides which will tell you about the area and the battlefields.

What sort of tour would suit me best? Depending on what interests you most, there are a number of different tours available. World War 1 Battlefield tours tend to explore the sites, cemeteries and museums, with many including a visit to Ypres and the Menin Gate.

World War 2 Battlefield Tours all vary and can include visits to sites such as the D-Day Beaches, Pegasus Bridge and parts of Normandy, Arnhem Bridge from Operation Market Garden and Anne Frank’s House in Amsterdam.

For a more laid back option perhaps look at Battlefield cruise tours which visit Normandy and other Battlefield sites.

When is the best time to visit? It’s best to visit the Battlefields in Spring, Summer or early autumn. They tend to get very busy in November around Remembrance Day. The weather should hopefully be in your favour too, making it more pleasant to spend your time outside.

What if I am in a wheelchair? A Battlefield tour may not be suitable for people in wheelchairs as the Cemeteries may be grassy and hard to navigate. There can also be uneven ground under foot which isn’t always ideal and could turn muddy!

What is the etiquette? Be respectful. You can talk amongst yourselves, but please take notice of your surroundings and those around you.

Can I take photographs? You can take photographs at your discretion, but again check your surroundings. Many of the museums will not allow you to take photos inside, so be aware of this and look for signs when you enter 

Can I bring back a souvenir? No, unless you buy it from a gift shop or authorised trader. Please don’t take your own ‘souvenir’ from any of the historical sites as this is prohibited.

Are there toilets to use? There aren’t always toilets available near some Battlefield sites, so be aware of this when travelling, although there will be regular comfort breaks. Also, it’s worth noting that some toilets have a charge payable for usage so ensure you have some loose change with you!

In World War 1 65 millions troops were mobilised, 8 million troops died and 21 million troops were wounded. "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori".

The thing with Remco is that his peaks are absolutely incredible, argubly higher than Roglic's, but he has massively struggled to string those together over an entire GT. He won the Vuelta once, but those bad days towards the end of the 2nd week don't end well for him if he is racing Vingegaard, Pogacar and Roglic in better shape. He couldn't sustain his level throughout the 2021 Giro, cracked massively in the high mountains of last years Vuelta and some people probably aren't 100% convinced him dropping in the Giro was an early covid symptom. Now there are plausible explanations for all of those things, but once someone fails to consistently perform in a GT so many times, one starts wondering whether this is just an inherent weakness of him. I don't think anyone of us can say for sure, which is why I think he is such an interesting wildcard going into the Tour. If he can ride like in LBL 2023 for 21 days he might pose a huge problem for Vingegaard and Pogacar both not in perfect condition. But if he has done it for 19 days I will still not be certain he can do it on day 20 as well.

Remco has never finished better than Kuss in a GT. So with the injuries to Rog and Ving, and Pog exhausted from the Giro, Kuss is the obvious choice.

There was a four-way tie at the top, Valhalla was on the mind, there were fast starts and big finishes and Matthieu Pavon was at it again on day two of the ISPS HANDA - CHAMPIONSHIP .

Here is everything you need to know from Friday at Taiheiyo Club Gotemba Course.

Leading quartet

Local favourite  Taihei Sato  fired a brilliant 62 to join DP World Tour stars  Sam Bairstow ,  Yannik Paul  and  Sebastian Söderberg at the top of the leaderboard. After round one was completed early in the morning following Thursday's fog delay, Englishman Bairstow was the man to set the target with a 64 but he would not be alone for long. Söderberg and Paul joined him at ten under with rounds of 64 and 65 respectively, before Sato completed his eight under par effort to make it a four-way tie. England's Matthew Southgate and Frenchman Tom Vaillant were then at eight under after rounds of 65 alongside Japan's Taiki Yoshida, who had three holes to complete on day three after going out in the final group.

Asian Swing battle intensifies

While Bairstow and Söderberg are both battling for the victory this week, the duo will also have other prizes on their mind. The duo sit sixth and fourth respectively on the Asian Swing Rankings with just the Volvo China Open to come after this week's event. The player who finishes top will win $200,000 and gain entry to the Back Nine events and the leading DP World Tour member (not otherwise exempt) will also qualify for the Genesis Scottish Open. Those who finish in positions one to three will also be exempt into the U.S. PGA Championship and Söderberg is keeping his eye on the prize. "You’ve got to win," he said. "We’ve got three spots and there are four events, so the winners have the front seat. You probably need a win."

Playing partners Söderberg and Paul were not hanging about at the start of their rounds, with the Swede making four birdies in a row and Paul picking up shots on his first three.

Southgate birdied seven of his last 11 holes, including his final four, to get to eight under. The Englishman has been struggling with a knee injury but having made changes to his swing with 2010 BMW PGA Championship winner Simon Khan and also worked on the mental side of his game, he is ready to challenge for a first victory in his 262nd appearance. "It’s a dream to win tournaments on this Tour, so when I get a chance I don’t want to back away from it," he said. "Hopefully I keep playing like I did today. I might be able to cause a few problems on Sunday if I can play like that for the next 36 holes."

15 men brought to military enlistment office after mass brawl in Moscow Oblast

Local security forces brought 15 men to a military enlistment office after a mass brawl at a warehouse of the Russian Wildberries company in Elektrostal, Moscow Oblast on Feb. 8, Russian Telegram channel Shot reported .

29 people were also taken to police stations. Among the arrested were citizens of Kyrgyzstan.

A mass brawl involving over 100 employees and security personnel broke out at the Wildberries warehouse in Elektrostal on Dec. 8.

Akuma rages into Street Fighter 6 on May 22

Akuma will challenge foes worthy enough to face him in Fighting Ground, World Tour, and the Battle Hub.

Legend tells of a man so consumed by his pursuit of strength that his soul and body have now faded into nothingness. Though many wish he were a mere legend, Akuma will rise again in Street Fighter 6 , to challenge foes worthy enough to face him on May 22. Will you harness the power of the Satsui no Hado or succumb to it?

Akuma made his debut in Super Street Fighter II Turbo as a hidden boss and playable character. In Street Fighter 6, Akuma’s thirst for strength has taken a maddening toll. He carves figures of the hundreds of opponents he has felled and places them in the cave he resides, their silence beckoning him to fall deeper into his path of inner strife.

Nakayama-san’s comments on his design: Akuma now has a more striking presence complete with gray hair. We also used Buddha statues and animals as references for his musculature in an attempt to give the character a more memorable aesthetic.

Like the rest of the Year 1 characters, Akuma can become your Master in World Tour. Find him in a new area, Enma’s Hollow, located on the island of Gokuento, but beware the effects of the Satsui no Hado lest you become tormented by its hunger. After increasing your bond with Akuma, he’ll teach you his demonic moves, which you can then assign to your avatar to be used in your World Tour travels or in Avatar Battles in the Battle Hub.

As a man who has spent his life honing his skills, Akuma’s move set will be familiar to long-time fans, but the Satsui no Hado has unlocked new abilities. His fast walk speed and long-reaching normals allow him to control space and the flow of the fight.

Let’s start with Akuma’s iconic moves that make him a well-rounded pursuer. His infamous fireball, Gou Hadoken is back, and can be charged up so that a “red fireball” is released instead, giving Akuma more options upon hit or block. Everyone’s favorite air fireball, Zanku Hadoken, can cover Akuma’s aggressive approach. His dragon punch, Gou Shoryuken, works as an anti-air or as a combo ender. Finally, Tatsumaki Zanku-Kyaku sees Akuma spinning forward in a series of kicks that change properties based on which kick button is pressed.

Like his previous iterations, Akuma uses Ashura Senku to glide on the battlefield cloaked in shadows. Be wary of using this ability since it can be stopped mid-way by an opponent’s attacks. However, Akuma has honed this move’s vulnerabilities and can now use Oboro Throw during the approach to surprise opponents.

Adamant Flame is one of Akuma’s new moves, where he performs a forward thrust engulfed in flames. This move is useful in combos and for exploiting vulnerable opponents due to its long reach. The OD version will wall splat opponents, opening up more opportunities in the corner.

Demon Raid is the Street Fighter 6 version of Hyakkishu. As Akuma leaps into the air with this move, choose to follow up with a low kick, overhead attack, dive kick, or to end the leap early. The OD version of Demon Raid unlocks two more follow-ups: an air fireball and an air tatsu.

Akuma’s Level 1 Super Art is Messatsu Gohado, where he fires a highly concentrated ball of Satsui no Hado. Like most Level 1s, this move is invulnerable on start-up. Akuma has a second Level 1 called Tenma Gozanku where he unleashes the fireball from the air.

Empyrean’s End is Akuma’s Level 2 Super Art where he turns the Satsui no Hado into a powerful flame and ignites it within the opponent. Using this move close to the corner will result in a wall splat where Akuma can continue his pressure or damage. Empyrean’s End is also invulnerable on start-up.

Akuma’s first Level 3 Super Art is Sip of Calamity, another move that is invulnerable on start-up! He throws opponents on the ground with their face and follows up with a single devastating blow.

Finally, the move you’ve all been waiting for: Shun Goku Satsu or the “Raging Demon.” This second Level 3 Super Art can only be performed when his Vitality is low enough for a Critical Art and can be used to end combos. This time, he allows you to see what happens during the one-second worth of nightmares.

Coming with this update is a new stage, Enma’s Hollow, where Akuma resides to continue his hellbent training. Year 1 Ultimate Pass owners will receive this stage on May 22.

Akuma’s Outfit 2 is inspired by his debut look in Super Street Fighter II Turbo. Speaking of outfits, Rashid, A.K.I., Ed, and Akuma will have their Outfit 3s also available for purchase when Akuma releases, and will automatically be distributed to all Year 1 Ultimate Pass owners.

One last thing before we sign off. With the Akuma update comes the major balance patch we mentioned in the past where all characters will receive changes. We’ll have more to share about this in the future as we approach May 22.

Undoubtedly one of the biggest concert tours ever, Taylor Swift's Eras Tour will continue right through 2024. The international leg of the tour kicked off in Japan, where she played four shows in Tokyo. 2) Olivia Rodrigo

This is not a drill—"Drivers License" singer Olivia Rodrigo will be hitting the road on tour starting at the end of February. The Guts World Tour runs from February through mid-August and has dates in Nashville, Toronto, Chicago, and New York City, among others. Even cooler? Rodrigo will have a stacked list of special guests—like PinkPantheress, Remi Wolf, The Breeders, and Chappell Roan—with her.

3) Red Hot Chili Peppers

Did you hear the good news? The Red Hot Chili Peppers have extended their global tour through summer 2024. The buzzy stadium tour, which kicked off in June 2022, will now run until July 2024 and bring the California-based band to places like Los Angeles, Tampa, Toronto, and Salt Lake City.

4) Bad Bunny

It's fitting that "Monaco" rapper Bad Bunny titled his tour Most Wanted —it's slated to be one of the year's hottest tours. Planned to help promote his latest studio album, Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana , Most Wanted will kick off in Salt Lake City on February 21 and run through May 26.

5) Billy Joel

If you haven't yet seen Billy Joel perform live, there's still time! The Piano Man has added more tour dates to his schedule, stopping in cities like Tampa, New York, Denver, and St. Louis this year. Even more exciting? He'll share the stage with fellow iconic performers Sting and Stevie Nicks for some of these dates.

Mitski recently announced that she's expanding her North American tour dates , and we couldn't be more excited. The months-long tour, which supports her 2023 studio album The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, has a long list of stops, including Miami Beach, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, and Paris.

There's nothing quite like a Madonna concert, that's for sure. The singer's Celebration Tour , which started last October, continues straight through the spring with dates in Seattle, San Francisco, Mexico City, and more. Besides her eye-catching sets, chart-topping songs, and impressive choreography, concertgoers also get a glimpse of the performer's fantastic costumes, which include looks from Versace and Jean Paul Gaultier.

8) Bleachers

The New Jersey-founded rock band, which is fronted by Jack Antonoff—known for producing albums for top acts like Taylor Swift, Lorde, and Lana Del Rey—not only has announced a new album but a new tour , too. The tour will start in the UK in March, ending fittingly in the band's home state of New Jersey in mid-June. 9) Nicki Minaj

Nicki fans rejoice: the rapper and singer might be coming to a city near you soon as part of her Pink Friday 2 World Tour. The massive tour will include performances in Brooklyn, Oakland, and Baltimore, with stops at Dreamville Festival and Rolling Loud California along the way.

10) Blink 182

Live out all of your nineties and early aughts pop-punk dreams with one of Blink 182's One More Time Tour dates. The tour, which supports the band's ninth studio album, One More Time..., will bring the trio to cities all over the globe, including Sydney, Santiago, Portland, and Boston. The tour's supporting act is Pierce the Veil, which is also worth checking out.

11) Stevie Nicks

The oh-so-magical Stevie Nicks continues her touring streak with a bunch of 2024 concert dates . Set to begin in Atlantic City, NJ on February 10, Nicks will visit a dozen cities throughout the U.S. this year, such as New Orleans, Omaha, and Chicago. "Let's keep this party going in 2024," the singer-songwriter posted on her Instagram in September to announce the newly added tour dates.

12) The 1975

The 1975 is showing no signs of slowing down. The British band, famous for hits like "Somebody Else" and "Robbers," has extended their 2023 tour through 2024. Titled Still...At Their Very Best , the 22-date tour will open in Glasgow on February 8 and conclude in Amsterdam on March 24.

13) Drake and J. Cole

Rap greats Drake and J. Cole come together for the It's All a Blur Tour – Big As the What? which is guaranteed to be a good time. Drake, fresh off his 2023 It's All a Blur tour with 21 Savage, is set to hit dozens of cities starting in February, many of which J. Cole will also be in tow for. Scoop up tickets ASAP, as Drake's shows are known to sell out.

14) Janet Jackson

Superstar Janet Jackson is also extending her 2023 tour, Together Again , into 2024 with dates in Anaheim, Austin, New Orleans, and Hartford. Even cooler? Jackson's supporting act is the 2000s southern rap legend Nelly.

15) Rolling Stones

If you've ever dreamed of seeing the Rolling Stones perform live in person, now's your chance. The iconic rockers, who released their studio album Hackney Diamonds this past fall, are returning on the road for a 16-date tour with shows throughout the United States and Canada. Concertgoers can expect a mix of new tunes and Stones classics.

16) Bruce Springsteen

Famous for countless listenable hits like "Born to Run" and "Glory Days," Bruce Springsteen is set to embark on a massive world tour this year with his band, The E Street Band. The much-anticipated tour will take the Boss and his crew to cities such as Phoenix, San Diego, Dublin, and Madrid, from March through November.

17) John Mayer

Be sure to catch John Mayer's solo tour this year, which will bring the guitarist and crooner to cities throughout Europe. This leg, an extension of his popular 2023 solo tour, will kick off in Stockholm on March 13 and finish in Dublin on March 29.

18) Shania Twain

Okay, this one is technically a residency , but we're excited nonetheless. Shania Twain, most known for her incredible outfits (her hooded leopard print look, anyone?) and hits like "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" is setting up shop in Vegas starting May 10. Twain's residency will take place at the Bakkt Theater at Planet Hollywood on and off throughout December 2024.

All good things must come to an end. The Eagles, known for "Hotel California" and other amazing rock songs, began their final concert tour this winter. It launched in Phoenix on January 20, with March 16 as its last date in the United States. Eagles fans won't want to miss this one.

20) Alanis Morisette: The Triple Moon Tour

Alanis Morisette joins forces with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts for their 2024 Triple Moon Tour , which has dates in North America and Canada. This tour is a great one to catch this summer, as it's slated to run from June through August.

Over the past week, what had begun as a smattering of pro-Palestinian protests on America’s college campuses exploded into a nationwide movement —

United, we’ll never be defeated!

— as students at dozens of universities held demonstrations, set up encampments, and at times seized academic buildings.

[PROTESTERS CLAMORING]:

response, administrators at many of those colleges decided to crack down —

Do not throw things at our officers. We will use chemical munitions that include gas.

— calling in local police to carry out mass detentions and arrests. From Arizona State —

In the name of the state of Arizona, I declare this gathering to be a violation of —

— to the University of Georgia —

— to City College of New York.

[PROTESTERS CHANTING, “BACK OFF”]:

As of Thursday, police had arrested 2,000 students on more than 40 campuses. A situation so startling that President Biden could no longer ignore it.

Look, it’s basically a matter of fairness. It’s a matter of what’s right. There’s the right to protest, but not the right to cause chaos.

Today, my colleagues Jonathan Wolfe and Peter Baker on a history-making week. It’s Friday, May 3.

Jonathan, as this tumultuous week on college campuses comes to an end, it feels like the most extraordinary scenes played out on the campus of the University of California Los Angeles, where you have been reporting. What is the story of how that protest started and ultimately became so explosive?

So late last week, pro-Palestinian protesters set up an encampment at the University of California, Los Angeles.

From the river to the sea!

Palestine will be free!

Palestine —

It was right in front of Royce Hall, which I don’t know if you are familiar with UCLA, but it’s a very famous, red brick building. It’s on all the brochures. And there was two things that stood out about this encampment. And the first thing was that they barricaded the encampment.

The encampment, complete with tents and barricades, has been set up in the middle of the Westwood campus. The protesters demand —

They have metal grates. They had wooden pallets. And they separated themselves from the campus.

This is kind of interesting. There are controlling access, as we’ve been talking about. They are trying to control who is allowed in, who is allowed out.

They sort of policed the area. So they only would let people that were part of their community, they said, inside.

I’m a UCLA student. I deserve to go here. We paid tuition. This is our school. And they’re not letting me walk in. Why can’t I go? Will you let me go in?

We’re not engaging with that.

Then you can move. Will you move?

And the second thing that stood out about this camp was that it immediately attracted pro-Israel counterprotesters.

And what did the leadership of UCLA say about all of this, the encampment and these counterprotesters?

So the University of California’s approach was pretty unique. They had a really hands-off approach. And they allowed the pro-Palestinian protesters to set up an encampment. They allowed the counterprotesters to happen. I mean, this is a public university, so anyone who wants to can just enter the campus.

So when do things start to escalate?

So there were definitely fights and scuffles through the weekend. But a turning point was really Sunday —

[SINGING IN HEBREW]:

— when this group called the Israeli American Council, they’re a nonprofit organization, organized a rally on campus. The Israeli American Council has really been against these pro-Palestinian protests. They say that they’re antisemitic. So this nonprofit group sets up a stage with a screen really just a few yards from the pro-Palestinian encampment.

We are grateful that this past Friday, the University of California, stated that they will continue to oppose any calls for boycott and divestment from Israel!

[PROTESTERS CHEERING]

And they host speakers and they held prayers.

Jewish students, you’re not alone! Oh, you’re not alone! We are right here with you! And we’re right here with you in until —

[WORDLESS SINGING]:

And then lots of other people start showing up. And the proximity between protesters and counterprotesters and even some agitators, makes it really clear that something was about to happen.

And what was that? What ended up happening?

On Monday night, a group of about 60 counterprotesters tried to breach the encampment there. And the campus police had to break it up. And things escalated again on Tuesday.

They stormed the barricades and it’s a complete riot.

[PROTESTER SHOUTING]:

Put it down! Put it down! Put it down!

I went to report on what happened just a few hours after it ended.

And I spoke to a lot of protesters. And I met one demonstrator, Marie.

Yeah, my first name is Marie. M-A-R-I-E. Last name, Salem.

And Marie described what happened.

So can you just tell me a little bit about what happened last night?

Last night, we were approached by over a hundred counterprotesters who were very mobilized and ready to break into camp. They proceeded to try to breach our barricades extremely violently.

Marie said it started getting out of hand when counterprotesters started setting off fireworks towards the camp.

They had bear spray. They had Mace. They were throwing wood and spears. Throwing water bottles, continuing fireworks.

So she said that they were terrified. It was just all hands on deck. Everyone was guarding the barricades.

Every time someone experienced the bear spray or Mace or was hit and bleeding, we had some medics in the front line. And then we had people —

And they said that they were just trying to take care of people who were injured.

I mean, at any given moment, there was 5 to 10 people being treated.

So what she described to me sounded more like a battlefield than a college campus.

And it was just a complete terror and complete abandonment of the university, as we also watched private security watch this the entire time on the stairs. And some LAPD were stationed about a football field length back from these counterprotesters, and did not make a single arrest, did not attempt to stop any violence, did not attempt to get in between the two groups. No attempt.

I should say, I spoke to a state authorities and eyewitnesses and they confirmed Marie’s account about what happened that night, both in terms of the violence that took place at the encampment and how law enforcement responded. So in the end, people ended up fighting for hours before the police intervened.

[SOMBER MUSIC]

So in her mind, UCLA’s hands-off approach, which seemed to have prevailed throughout this entire period, ends up being way too hands off in a moment when students were in jeopardy.

That’s right. And so at this point, the protesters in the encampment started preparing for two possibilities. One was that this group of counterprotesters would return and attack them. And the second one was that the police would come and try to break up this encampment.

So they started building up the barricades. They start reinforcing them with wood. And during the day, hundreds of people came and brought them supplies. They brought food.

They brought helmets, goggles, earplugs, saline solution, all sorts of things these people could use to defend themselves. And so they’re really getting ready to burrow in. And in the end, it was the police who came.

[PROTESTERS SHOUTING]:

So Wednesday at 7:00 PM, they made an announcement on top of Royce Hall, which overlooks the encampment —

— administrative criminal actions up to and including arrest. Please leave the area immediately.

And they told people in the encampment that they needed to leave or face arrest.

[DRUM BEATING]: [PROTESTERS CHANTING]

And so as night falls, they put on all this gear that they’ve been collecting, the goggles, the masks and the earplugs, and they wait for the police.

[DRUM BEATING]:

And so the police arrive and station themselves right in front of the encampment. And then at a certain point, they storm the back stairs of the encampment.

[PROTESTERS CHANTING]:

And this is the stairs that the protesters have been using to enter and exit the camp. And they set up a line. And the protesters do this really surprising thing.

The people united!

They open up umbrellas. They have these strobe lights. And they’re flashing them at the police, who just slowly back out of the camp.

[PROTESTERS CHEERING]:

And so at this point, they’re feeling really great. They’re like, we did it. We pushed them out of their camp. And when the cops try to push again on those same set of stairs —

[PROTESTER SHOUTS]:

Hold your ground!

— the protesters organized themselves with all these shields that they had built earlier. And they go and confront them. And so there’s this moment where the police are trying to push up the stairs. And the protesters are literally pushing them back.

Push them back! Push them back!

Push them back!

And at a certain point, dozens of the police officers who were there, basically just turn around and leave.

So how does this eventually come to an end?

So at a certain point, the police push in again. Most of the conflict is centered at the front of these barricades. And the police just start tearing them apart.

[METAL CLANGING]

[CLAMORING]

They removed the front barricade. And in its place is this group of protesters who have linked arms and they’re hanging on to each other. And the police are trying to pull protesters one by one away from this group.

He’s just a student! Back off!

But they’re having a really hard time because there’s so many protesters. And they’re all just hanging on to each other.

We’re moving back now.

So at a certain point, one of the police officers started firing something into the crowd. We don’t exactly know what it was. But it really spooked the protesters.

Stop shooting at kids! Fuck you! Fuck them!

They started falling back. Everyone was really scared. The protesters were yelling, don’t shoot us. And at that point, the police just stormed the camp.

Get back. Get back.

Back up now!

And so after about four hours of this, the police pushed the protesters out of the encampment. They had arrested about 200 protesters. And this was finally over.

And I’m just curious, Jonathan, because you’re standing right there, you are bearing witness to this all, what you were thinking, what your impressions of this were.

I mean, I was stunned. These are mostly teenagers. This is a college campus, an institution of higher learning. And what I saw in front of me looked like a war zone.

[TENSE MUSIC]

The massive barricade, the police coming in with riot gear, and all this violence was happening in front of these red brick buildings that are famous for symbolizing a really open college campus. And everything about it was just totally surreal.

Well, Jonathan, thank you very much. We appreciate it.

Peter, around 10:00 AM on Thursday morning as the smoke is literally still clearing at the University of California Los Angeles, you get word that President Biden is going to speak.

Right, exactly. It wasn’t on his public schedule. He was about to head to Andrews Air Force base in order to take a trip. And then suddenly, we got the notice that he was going to be addressing the cameras in the Roosevelt Room.

They didn’t tell us what he was going to talk about. But it was pretty clear, I think. Everybody understood that it was going to be about these campus protests, about the growing violence and the clashes with police, and the arrests that the entire country had been watching on TV every night for the past week, and I think that we were watching just that morning with UCLA. And it reached the point where he just had to say something.

And why, in his estimation and those of his advisors, was this the moment that Biden had to say something?

Well, it kind of reached a boiling point. It kind of reached the impression of a national crisis. And you expect to hear your president address it in this kind of a moment, particularly because it’s about his own policy. His policy toward Israel is at the heart of these protests. And he was getting a lot of grief. He was getting a lot of grief from Republicans who were chiding him for not speaking out personally. He hadn’t said anything in about 10 days.

He’s getting a lot of pressure from Democrats, too, who wanted him to come out and be more forceful. It wasn’t enough, in their view, to leave it to his spokespeople to say something. Moderate Democrats felt he needed to come out and take some leadership on this.

And so at the appointed moment, Peter, what does Biden actually say in the Roosevelt Room of the White House?

Good morning.

Before I head to North Carolina, I wanted to speak for a few moments about what’s going on, on our college campuses here.

Well, it comes in the Roosevelt Room and he talks to the camera. And he talks about the two clashing imperatives of American principle.

The first is the right to free speech and for people to peacefully assemble and make their voices heard. The second is the rule of law. Both must be upheld.

One is freedom of speech. The other is the rule of law.

In fact, peaceful protest is in the best tradition of how Americans respond to consequential issues. But, but, neither are we a lawless country.

In other words, what he’s saying is, yes, I support the right of these protesters to come out and object to even my own policy, in effect, is what he’s saying. But it shouldn’t trail into violence.

Destroying property is not a peaceful protest. It’s against the law. Vandalism, trespassing, breaking windows, shutting down campuses —

It shouldn’t trail into taking over buildings and obstructing students from going to class or canceling their graduations.

Threatening people, intimidating people, instilling fear in people is not peaceful protest. It’s against the law.

And he leans very heavily into this idea that what he’s seeing these days goes beyond the line.

I understand people have strong feelings and deep convictions. In America, we respect the right and protect the right for them to express that. But it doesn’t mean anything goes.

It has crossed into harassment and expressions of hate in a way that goes against the national character.

As president, I will always defend free speech. And I will always be just as strong and standing up for the rule of law. That’s my responsibility to you, the American people, and my obligation to the Constitution. Thank you very much.

Right, as I watched the speech, I heard his overriding message to basically be, I, the president of the United States, am drawing a line. These protests and counterprotests, the seizing and defacing of campus buildings, class disruption, all of it, name calling, it’s getting out of hand. That there’s a right way to do this. And what I’m seeing is the wrong way to do it and it has to stop.

That’s exactly right. And as he’s wrapping up, reporters, of course, ask questions. And the first question is —

Mr. President, have the protests forced you to reconsider any of the policies with regard to the region?

— will this change your policy toward the war in Gaza? Which, of course, is exactly what the protesters want. That’s the point.

And he basically says —

— no. Just one word, no.

Right. And that felt kind of important, as brief and fleeting as it was, because at the end of the day, what he’s saying to these protesters is, I’m not going to do what you want. And basically, your protests are never going to work. I’m not going to change the US’s involvement in this war.

Yeah, that’s exactly right. He is saying, I’m not going to be swayed by angry people in the streets. I’m going to do what I think is right when it comes to foreign policy. Now, what he thinks is that they’re not giving him enough credit for trying to achieve what they want, which is an end of the war.

He has been pressuring Israel and Hamas to come to a deal for a ceasefire that will, hopefully, in his view, would then lead to a more enduring end of hostilities. But, of course, this deal hasn’t gone anywhere. Hamas, in particular, seems to be resisting it. And so the president is left with a policy of arming Israel without having found a way yet to stop the war.

Right. I wonder, though, Peter, if we’re being honest, don’t these protests, despite what Biden is saying there, inevitably exert a kind of power over him? Becoming one of many pressures, but a pressure nonetheless that does influence how he thinks about these moments. I mean, here he is at the White House devoting an entire conversation to the nation to these campus protests.

Well, look, he knows this feeds into the political environment in which he’s running for re-election, in which he basically has people who otherwise might be his supporters on the left disenchanted with him. And he knows that there’s a cost to be paid. And that certainly, obviously, is in his head as he’s thinking about what to do.

But I think his view of the war is changing by the day for all sorts of reasons. And most of them having to do with realities on the ground. He has decided that Israel has gone far enough, if not too far, in the way it has conducted this operation in Gaza.

He is upset about the humanitarian crisis there. And he’s looking for a way to wrap all this up into a move that would move to peacemaking, beginning to get the region to a different stage, maybe have a deal with the Saudis to normalize relations with Israel in exchange for some sort of a two-state solution that would eventually resolve the Palestinian issue at its core.

So I think it’s probably fair to say that the protests won’t move him in an immediate kind of sense. But they obviously play into the larger zeitgeist of the moment. And I also think it’s important to know who Joe Biden is at heart.

Explain that.

He’s not drawn to activism. He was around in 1968, the last time we saw this major conflagration at Columbia University, for instance. At the time, Joe Biden was a law student in Syracuse, about 250 miles away. And he was an institutionalist even then.

He was just focused on his studies. He was about to graduate. He was thinking about the law career. And he didn’t really have much of an affinity, I think, for his fellow students of that era, for their activist way of looking at things.

He tells a story in his memoir about walking down a street in Syracuse one day to go to the pizza shop with some friends. And they walk by the administration building. And they see people hanging out of the windows. They’re hanging SDS banners. That’s the Students for a Democratic Society, which was one of the big activist groups of the era.

And he says, they were taking over the building. And we looked up and said, look at those assholes. That’s how far apart from the antiwar movement I was. That’s him writing in his memoir.

So to a young Joe Biden, those who devote their time and their energy to protesting the war are, I don’t need to repeat the word twice, but they’re losers. They’re not worth his time.

Well, I think it’s the tactics they’re using more than the goals that he disagreed with. He would tell you he disagreed with the Vietnam War. He was for civil rights. But he thought that taking over a building was performative, was all about getting attention, and that there was a better way, in his view, to do it.

He was somebody who wanted to work inside the system. He said in an interview quite a few years back, he says, look, I was wearing sports coats in that era. He saw himself becoming part of the system, not somebody trying to tear it down.

And so how should we think about that Joe Biden, when we think about this Joe Biden? I mean, the Joe Biden who, as a young man, looked upon antiwar protesters with disdain and the one who is now president and his very own policies have inspired such ferocious campus protests?

Yeah, that Joe Biden, the 1968 Joe Biden, he could just throw on a sports coat, go to the pizza shop with his friends, make fun of the activists and call them names, and then that’s it. They didn’t have to affect his life. But that’s not what 2024 Joe Biden can do.

Now, wherever he goes, he’s dogged by this. He goes to speeches and people are shouting at him, Genocide Joe! Genocide Joe! He is the target of the same kind of a movement that he disdained in 1968. And so as much as he would like to ignore it or move on or focus on other things, I think this has become a defining image of his year and one of the defining images, perhaps, of his presidency. And 2024 Joe Biden can’t simply ignore it.

During testimony on Thursday in Donald Trump’s hush money trial, jurors heard a recording secretly made by Trump’s former fixer, Michael Cohen, in which Trump discusses a deal to buy a woman’s silence. In the recording, Trump asks Cohen about how one payment made by Trump to a woman named Karen McDougal would be financed. The recording could complicate efforts by Trump’s lawyers to distance him from the hush money deals at the center of the trial.

Over the past week, students at dozens of universities held demonstrations, set up encampments and, at times, seized academic buildings. In response, administrators at many of those colleges decided to crack down and called in the local police to detain and arrest demonstrators.

As of Thursday, the police had arrested 2,000 people across more than 40 campuses, a situation so startling that President Biden could no longer ignore it.

Nato supports Bosnia’s territorial integrity and is concerned by “malign foreign interference,” including by Russia , in the volatile Balkans region that went through a devastating war in the 1990s, Nato’s secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg , has said.

Sarajevo is the first stop on Stoltenberg’s tour of western Balkan countries that will also include Kosovo, Serbia and North Macedonia, the Associated Press reports.

“The Allies strongly support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bosnia-Herzegovina,” Stoltenberg told reporters. “We are concerned by the secessionist and divisive rhetoric as well as malign foreign interference, including Russia.”

There are widespread fears that Russia is trying to destabilise Bosnia and the rest of the region and shift at least some world attention from its war in Ukraine .

The US secretary of defence, Lloyd Austin, arrived in Kyiv on Monday for a visit. “I’m here today to deliver an important message: the United States will continue to stand with Ukraine in their fight for freedom against Russia’s aggression, both now and into the future.”

Two people were killed early on Monday after Russian forces shelled a parking lot in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson, authorities said. Regional prosecutors opened a war crimes investigation into the artillery strike, which occurred at about 9am (7am GMT) and injured one other person, the regional prosecutor’s office reported.

A Ukrainian soldier and a woman have died after a grenade exploded in a Kyiv apartment, police in the Ukrainian capital have said, but the cause of the blast, which injured a second man, was not immediately clear. Explosives technicians and investigators were working at the scene of Sunday’s explosion in the Dniprovskiy district, Kyiv police said in a statement.

The Ukrainian army said it had pushed back Russian forces “three to eight kilometres” from the banks of the Dnipro River, which if confirmed would be the first meaningful advance by Kyiv’s forces months into a disappointing counteroffensive . Ukrainian and Russian forces have been entrenched on opposite sides of the vast waterway in the southern Kherson region for more than a year, after Russia withdrew its troops from the western bank last November.

A Ukrainian teenager who was taken to Russia from the occupied city of Mariupol during the war and prevented from leaving earlier this year has returned to Ukraine . Bohdan Yermokhin, who turned 18 on Sunday, appealed to Zelenskiy this month to help bring him back to Ukraine. “I believed I would be in Ukraine, but not on this day,” Yermokhin told Reuters while eating at a petrol station after crossing the border.

About 3,000 mostly Ukrainian trucks, including those carrying fuel and humanitarian aid, were stuck on the Polish side of the border on Sunday due to a more than 10-day blockade by Polish truckers, Ukrainian authorities said . Polish truckers earlier this month blocked roads to three border crossings with Ukraine to protest against what they see as government inaction over a loss of business to foreign competitors since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Air defence units in Moscow intercepted a drone targeting the city late Sunday, mayor Sergei Sobyanin said . Sobyanin, writing on the Telegram messaging app, said units in the Elektrostal district in the capital’s east had intercepted the drone. No casualties or damage were initially reported. Air defences had also thwarted a drone attack on the Russian capital overnight to Sunday, authorities said earlier.

Russia launched 20 Iranian-made Shahed drones targeting Kyiv and the Cherkasy and Poltava regions overnight into Sunday, the Ukrainian military said, of which 15 were shot down . The overnight strikes on Kyiv were the second attack on the Ukrainian capital in 48 hours, said the city’s military administration spokesperson, Serhii Popko.

Five people including a three-year-old girl were injured in Russian artillery shelling of Kherson on Sunday morning, the Ukrainian interior minister, Ihor Klymenko , said . “All of them sustained shrapnel wounds. The child and the grandmother were walking in the yard. Enemy artillery hit them near the entrance,” Klymenko said on the Telegram messaging app.

The pro-war Russian nationalist Igor Girkin , who is in custody awaiting trial for inciting extremism, said he wanted to run for president even though he understood the March election would be a “sham” with the winner already clear . Girkin, who is also known by the alias Igor Strelkov, has repeatedly said Russia faces revolution and even civil war unless President Vladimir Putin’s military top brass fight the war in Ukraine more effectively. A former Federal Security Service (FSB) officer who helped Russia to annex Crimea in 2014 and then to organise pro-Russian militias in eastern Ukraine, Girkin said before his arrest that he and his supporters were entering politics.

The Kremlin, facing the prospect of a European Union ban on imports of Russian diamonds, said on Monday that EU sanctions tended to have a “boomerang effect” on those who applied them, Reuters reports.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov was commenting on a proposed EU ban on diamond imports from Russia as part of a new sanctions package against Moscow over the conflict in Ukraine .

Russia is the world’s biggest producer of rough diamonds by volume. Peskov told reporters such a move had been anticipated for a long time, but was likely to backfire.

“As a rule, it turns out that a boomerang effect is partially triggered: the interests of the Europeans themselves suffer. So far, we have been able to find ways to minimise the negative consequences of sanctions,” he said.

EU diplomatic sources said last week the proposal under discussion was to ban direct diamond imports from Russia from 1 January and from March to implement a traceability mechanism that would prevent imports of Russian gems processed in third countries.

The Kremlin said on Monday that president Vladimir Putin will set out Russia’s view of what it sees as the “deeply unstable world situation” when he addresses an upcoming virtual G20 summit.

Russian state TV presenter Pavel Zarubin said on his Telegram channel on Sunday that it would be the “first event in a long time” including both Putin and western leaders.

According to the state RIA news agency, the G20 virtual summit will be held on Wednesday.

The Kremlin said on Monday it regretted Finland’s decision to shut crossings on its border with Russia , saying it reflected Helsinki’s adoption of an anti-Russian stance, Reuters reports.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov , speaking at a regular news briefing, also rejected Finland’s accusation that Russia is deliberately pushing illegal migrants towards the border and said that Russian border guards were following all instructions.

Finland, a member of the European Union and – from this year – also of the Nato military alliance, closed four crossings on its border with Russia on Saturday as Helsinki seeks to halt a flow of asylum seekers it says was instigated by Moscow.

Two killed by Russian shelling in Kherson, Ukrainian authorities say

Reuters reports that two people were killed early on Monday after Russian forces shelled a parking lot in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson, authorities said.

Regional prosecutors opened a war crimes investigation into the artillery strike, which occurred at about 9am (7am GMT) and injured one other person, the regional prosecutor’s office reported.

The Kherson governor, Oleksandr Prokudin, said the two dead were drivers for a private transport business.

Images posted on Telegram showed firefighters dousing cars that had been blasted apart, one day after a separate strike on the city wounded five people, including a three-year-old girl.

Russian forces have regularly shelled Kherson from across the Dnipro River since the regional capital was reoccupied by Ukrainian troops last November.

Ukraine said last week it had secured a foothold on the eastern bank of the Dnipro and that its troops were trying to push Russian forces further back.

US defence secretary visits Kyiv

The US secretary of defence, Lloyd Austin, arrived in Kyiv on Monday for a visit, he said on the X social media platform, Reuters reports.

“I’m here today to deliver an important message: the United States will continue to stand with Ukraine in their fight for freedom against Russia’s aggression, both now and into the future.”

The visit comes amid increasing division over Ukraine aid in the US legislature. A joint Ukraine-US military industry conference in Washington is due to take place next month.

That event, due to be held on 6-7 December, is intended to boost Ukraine’s domestic arms production as its fight against a full-scale Russian invasion nears the two-year mark.

Reuters reports that a Japanese delegation led by senior industry and foreign ministry officials and including business representatives is visiting Ukraine on Monday for talks ahead of a reconstruction conference that Japan will host, the industry ministry said.

Japan, which has been supporting Ukraine with funds and by accepting refugees since Russia invaded in February 2022, has also been promoting support for Ukraine at the level of the G7, which Japan chairs this year.

Kazuchika Iwata , the state minister of economy, trade and industry (METI), and the state minister for foreign affairs Kiyoto Tsuji , are visiting together with representatives of Japan companies, METI said in a statement.

In Kyiv, the delegation, which includes members of Keidanren, Japan’s biggest business lobby, in charge of a committee on Ukraine’s reconstruction, plans talks with the prime minister, Denys Shmyhal , government officials and companies.

Shmyhal said this month Ukraine would need budget support of about $42bn this year and next year to plug a massive deficit and aid reconstruction from the devastation caused by Russia’s invasion.

METI said the visit was an opportunity to hear about Ukraine’s needs and to discuss specific projects and accelerate public and private efforts to help.

The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy – who visited Japan in May during a G7 summit – and the Japanese prime minister, Fumio Kishida, agreed this month to hold a Japan-Ukraine Conference for promotion of Economic Reconstruction in Tokyo on 19 February.
