Cuba Tours & Travel

Cuba Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Cuba video

Long closed to most U.S. travelers, Cuba is now subject to fewer travel restrictions, and Americans are discovering what the rest of the world has known for years: the island nation 90 miles south of Florida has friendly people, a vibrant culture, beautiful beaches, and 1950's-era cars that still run. No matter the politics, Cuba and its people are sure to leave a lasting impression on you.

Visiting Cuba is like entering a time warp. Because of longtime Cuban government restrictions placed on the purchase of imported cars, many Cubans have had to ingeniously make do with American cars dating from the 1950s and early 1960s.

Replacement parts are scarce but clever mechanics have found ways to keep them running. Hence a trip to Cuba is much like watching a classic car rally, except that these classic cars are in full use as taxis and private vehicles.

The time warp continues in the aging houses and mansions you encounter on a guided Cuba tour in Old Havana , a UNESCO World Heritage Site and probably the best preserved city center in the Caribbean . Many have Spanish-style balconies, arcades, wrought-iron gates and internal courtyards. Some appear to be on life support but remain standing, much as the classic cars keep running.

Visiting Cuba Today

Cuba is experiencing a surge in interest due to the recent restoration of diplomatic relations between the US and Cuban governments. This beautiful and elusive country is now more accessible to one of its closest neighbors and American travelers are itching to visit.

There are still some travel restrictions in place for US citizens however. As relaxing as it might sound, it's still technically illegal for Americans to travel to Cuba to laze on the beach, mojito in hand.

However, the OFAC (Office of Foreign Asset Control) does permit American travel to Cuba, provided it fits within 1 of 12 general categories. One of the most popular of these is 'educational activities' and tour operators have long led 'people to people' tours, which include activities like visiting with local musicians, farmers, and artisans. This is how the majority of American citizens have legally traveled to Cuba for the past few years.

More recently, travel regulations were further relaxed, giving tour operators even more flexibility with the types of itineraries they run in Cuba. This means virtually any tour in Cuba is legal for American travelers, but always check direct with the tour operator first.

Options for Cuba travel include primarily  guided tours in Cuba . T aking a tour is one of the best ways to have an authentic experience in this rich and diverse country. Taking a tour doesn't mean being stuck in a large group on a coach bus either. Some companies limit their groups to 10-15 like-minded travelers to provide an intimate, accessible experience.

Why Consider a Tour In Cuba?

Although traveling to Cuba independently is now possible, it’s still wise to consider a tour . Due to the increased demand, hotel rooms in popular cities like Havana and Trinidad are hard to come by. This means that unless you plan many months in advance, you might be relegated to a less than desirable hotel that isn’t centrally located. Cuba tour operators , on the other hand, purchase rooms in bulk up to a year in advance, so you are guaranteed a room in some of the country’s most famous and beautiful accommodations.

The infrastructure in Cuba, specifically the road and transportation network, are still quite basic and developing. It can be hard to get around from city to city and all of the signs are in Spanish. Speaking of language barriers, it’s a challenge to find many English speakers outside of hotels and major tourist attractions.

On a tour, you’ll hit the major tourist sites, such as El Floridita (where Hemingway himself used to drink) but you’ll also have a chance to meet local artists and business people - all who can offer unique glimpses into the current affairs of this fascinating country. Tour guides can often show you a side of Cuba that you’d otherwise miss if traveling independently.

Must See Cuban Cities

Tours in Cuba often begin in Havana , with the most direct flights from Miami and other US cities. However, it is recommended to explore beyond the famous capital city, venturing farther afield to places like Vinales Valley, Trinidad, and Santa Clara. These ‘secondary’ cities have less tourists, but offer unique cultural and natural experiences that are not to be missed.

The small city of Vinales , and the surrounding UNESCO World Heritage Site Vinales Valley, lies a few hours to the west of Havana.  If Havana is like stepping back to the 1950’s, it can be said that visiting Vinales harkens back even further to the 19th century.

This largely agricultural area, where crops such as coffee and tobacco are still grown following centuries old traditions, is an outdoor-lover’s paradise. The lush landscape is dotted with karsts which attract climbers and hikers alike. The region is also known for its music and arts scene, much like other parts of Cuba. See best Cuba travel packages to Vinales  »

Trinidad & Topes de Collantes

The beautiful cobblestoned-street city of Trinidad lies in the southern part of the island, about a 6 hours drive on Cuba’s notoriously choppy roads. Yet another UNESCO World Heritage site, Trinidad has been beautifully preserved to its colonial charms. Artist galleries and restaurants with live music line the narrow cobblestone streets. Walking through an open door might reveal a couple of men playing dominos on a plastic table or a traditional pig roast in process.

Visit the Plaza Major to experience an open air colonial architecture museum and then check out live music next to the cathedral in the same location. Although accommodation is hard to come by, many Cuba tours make stops in Trinidad to take in its authenticity.

Trinidad also acts as a great jumping off point for Cuba adventures into Topes de Collantes , one of Cuba’s many national parks. Located about 12 miles from the city, Topes de Collantes lies in a mountainous region home to a plethora of flora and fauna, many endemic to Cuba.

Guided hikes are available around the park and are mostly mellow over well blazed trails. There are opportunities to hike with a local naturalist, who can point out local bird varieties. Other hikes end at picturesque waterfalls where a cool swim is inviting in the tropical heat. Topes de Collantes is most popular with local Cubans on vacation, although many tourists, especially Europeans, are starting to discover its charms.

Santa Clara

Santa Clara is located is close proximity to Havana, due east about 3 hours. It’s probably most famous for being the place where revolutionary fighter Che Guevara is buried, and thousands of tourists flock here to see his final resting place. This historic city is also where the final battle of the Cuban Revolution took place in 1958.

Two columns of revolutionary fighters attacked the city, one led by Che. After intense fighting, the city was captured, and hours later, General Batista, then leader of Cuba, left the country. Santa Clara is a tour highlight for history buffs and a common stopping point on the drive from Havana to Trinidad.

Music & Art in Cuba

There’s something about being in Cuba that brings out the dancer even in those who travel with two left feet. It’s no mystery: the music -- salsa, jazz, rumba, merengue, and other genres, often combined into a unique Afro-Cuban sound -- is both ubiquitous and irresistible. You’ll hear it in clubs, bars, restaurants, bodegas, or just emanating from the nearest homes.

In Havana, there is live music on many street corners, including outside most of the major hotels. If you desire something more formal and organized, the famous Cuban band The Buena Vista Social Club still performs most nights in a bar in Old Havana. While many of the original founders of the group have passed or are no longer playing, a few still remain.

Many tours include a night out to hear these legends of Cuban jazz and it’s well worth the relatively expensive cover charge. Many times, the musicians will hang around after the set and if your Spanish is decent, striking up a conversation could be one of the highlights of your trip.

Other opportunities to see live music include the rooftop bar of the Hotel Inglaterra, located near Parque Central, where a salsa or rumba ensemble plays most nights. There are also a number of dance clubs around Havana, including Casa de la Musica de Miramar, El Turquino, and Cabaret Parisien, which hosts an elaborate cabaret show, complete with flowered dancers.

Believe it or not, some of the most authentic music in Cuba can be heard while sitting outside having dinner at a paladares, or local restaurant, in Old Havana. Small groups of musicians will approach your table and give you a private concert, of course in exchange for a few pesos.

Many famous artists, such as Wifredo Lam, have come out of Cuba, however, many are still relatively unknown due to the isolation of the country for so many years. For authentic local Cuban art, a visit to the El Taller Experimental de Grafica is a must. This artist workshop, founded in 1962 with the support of infamous revolutionary Che Guevara, is still a thriving studio today. Inside, artists of all ages delicately create traditional prints using decades old techniques. Prints are for sale and you can discuss the pieces of art direct with the artist, which is a special experience.

Other top art galleries include Galeria Victor Manuel, Galeria Habana, and Fototeca de Cuba, which houses the country’s largest collection of photographs. Although many tours will only include a stop at the Museo de Nacional, most itineraries offer ample free time to explore these artistic havens on your own.

Art is also central to Cuban life, from Havana’s excellent National Museum of Fine Arts to street corner painters and much in between.

The Hemingway Legacy

You might be surprised to learn that American author Ernest Hemingway -- a longtime resident of Havana, where he wrote "The Old Man and the Sea" and "A Moveable Feast" among other works -- is still venerated in Cuba. His finca, where he lived just outside Havana throughout the 1940s and ‘50s, is maintained as a museum,  and a popular stop on most tour itineraries .

Everything is kept the way he left it, except that a new set of cats (many of which have six toes, the progeny of Hemingway’s own fleet of stray cats), now curl up on his desk for naps.  One of the most intimate glimpses into Hemingway’s sometimes lonely existence is apparent by the writing on the bathroom wall of his home. This is where he recorded his daily weight, in pencil. At some point in history, the writing was covered up, only to be discovered by museum curators years later while conducting restoration around the home.

You can also visit many of his old haunts around Havana such as El Floridita, said to be the birthplace of the daiquiri (one of Hemingway’s favorite libations) and La Bodeguita del Medio, which serves as a virtual Hemingway memorial (though still a working bar, with plenty of atmosphere). Both places can get very crowded with tourists and there are better drinks in town. However, it can be worth the stop for any literary buffs who’d like to sit side by side with Hemingway’s statue at the bar.

Another Hemingway haunt worth a visit is La Terraza Restaurant, located in the small fishing village of Cojimar, about 20 minutes from Havana. This is the very place depicted in his novel ‘Old Man and the Sea’ and the walls are adorned with black and white photos of the author himself, including many of him dining at La Terraza. It’s no surprise that Hemingway chose this seaside gem as a top spot in Cuba.

Best Beaches in Cuba

While Americans can’t go to Cuba just for a beach vacation yet, (if that's what you're after, consider the best travel packages to Costa Rica ) other nationalities can -- and if you’re in a position to visit one of the island’s 300-some sandy beaches, you may find yourself mostly alone despite the glorious settings.

Among Cuba’s finest beaches are the white-sand Playa Ancon (on the southern, Caribbean side of the island) and 12-mile-long, white-sand Varadero Beach, the best known beach in the country. Both offer crystal clear waters for swimming or snorkeling. Be warned though that if you are looking for seclusion, you won’t find it at Playa Ancon or Playa Varadero. Both are well-trodden with tourists and feature many all inclusive resorts.

Other top beaches include Playa Los Flamencos, located within Cayo Coco off Cuba’s north shore. There are three main beaches in this idyllic location, although Los Flamencos offers the most privacy and tranquility.

Playa Pilar was the choice beach of Ernest Hemingway himself. He spent so much time here that the beach was named after his yacht, the Pilar. This bit of sand on the western tip of Cayo Guillermo is probably one of the least popular beaches in the region, for now.

Playa Los Pinos is perhaps the most deserted beach in all of Cuba. Getting here requires an off-road ride that is not accessible by public transport. But for the intrepid beach goers who make the trip, the reward is a long white sand beach where your only companions might be a band of wild horses.

Playa Esmeralda is a good spot for those wanting a bit of understated luxury. This smaller beach features two luxury hotels that are tastefully situated as not to be an eyesore on the pristine beach environment. If you’re looking to relax and recharge for a few days, in style, this might be the place for you.

Food in Cuba

Cuban food is often thought of as beans and rice, which are indeed served at many meals and can be delicious, but there’s much more to it than that. The cuisine has Spanish, French, African, Chinese, Portuguese, and Arabic influences, along with Caribbean favorites such as fried plantains, similar to but different from bananas.

Stews and many other dishes use a base of sofrito (onion, green pepper, garlic, oregano) for flavoring; more contemporary cuisine includes Spanish-style tapas. Coffee is on the strong side and Cuban sandwiches -- ham, pork, pickle, cheese, and mustard on bread -- are among the world’s best. Besides regular restaurants, a number of private homes, called paladares,  now serve as eateries offering authentic local cuisine.

This is great news for visitors as you not only get a fresh, delicious meal, but also the opportunity to catch a glimpse of local, everyday life. Tour companies have caught on and many now include at least one meal at some of the best paladares in Havana such as Doña Eutimia and Le Chansonnier. Just don’t expect a quick meal - Cubans take their time and you should to. Besides, what can beat sitting outside on a warm Havana night, sipping a mojito and eating freshly caught prawns tossed in garlic and pepper while waiting for your main dish of ropa vieja?

Vegetarians and pescatarians should have no trouble finding something to eat, although the former may need to get used to a steady diet of rice, beans, and salad for a few days. Seafood lovers, however, will found a bounty of diverse and fresh options from the surrounding waters.

Regardless of your diet or culinary preferences, you are sure to find something tasty and flavorful in Cuba as long as you are willing to be patient and explore some of the hidden gems in Havana and beyond.

Ultimately, the Cuban people themselves are the stars of any visit to the island. And the best way to meet them is by organized tour, featuring people-to-people encounters.

Travel to Cuba: Practicalities & Logistics

Capital city‎: ‎Havana (population 2.2 million)

Before you go

Visas are required for all American citizens traveling to Cuba. Most tour operators usually include this fee in the price of the trip, or have a separate visa fee that is paid once your trip is confirmed. Either way, it’s a good idea to book a Cuba trip with a tour company who will handle the visa logistics for you. UK citizens also must obtain a tourist card before traveling to Cuba.

Medical care in Cuba is quite good, with more doctors per capita than many other countries. However, you should always travel with insurance and many tour operators can recommend a plan to cover you while on your trip. Only routine vaccinations are required for Cuba, however, the CDC does recommend both Typhoid and Hepatitis A vaccinations for some travelers.

Cuba is generally very safe compared to other Central and South American countries. Police are everywhere, and especially apparent in high tourist locations. However, as when traveling in any foreign country, use common street sense and pay attention to your surroundings. This is especially true in Havana, Trinidad and other large cities. Crimes of opportunity, such as pick-pocketing, are not unheard of, but a little vigilance goes a long way, and traveling in a group can help deter any potential trouble.

10 of the very best places to visit in Cuba

Diana Rita Cabrera

beautiful cuba tour

Experience the very best of Cuba with these top places to visit, starting with Havana © Sean Pavone / Shutterstock

From gorgeous cities swaying to the beat of tropical rhythms to unspoiled, lush forests,  Cuba delights travelers with a wide variety of contrasting places.

Travelers will find eclectic architecture, white-sand beaches and prime wildlife-watching spots across the country. Here are 10 places worth adding to your Cuba itinerary to truly experience the Caribbean’s biggest and most fascinating island.

Best city for art and architecture

The Cuban capital of  Havana is packed with vintage cars, embellished with old-world cobblestone plazas and silhouetted on the north by a 5-mile sea drive known as the Malecón.

Make sure you visit  Habana Vieja ’s old squares for a glimpse of the colonial architecture that shaped the city in the 1700s and 1800s, where you can admire the palatial mansions that now operate as museums and hotels.

A walk along pedestrianized Calle Obispo  offers art galleries, shops, music venues and incredible architecture, with buildings spanning periods from the 1700s to the late 1900s in just a mile.

Planning tip:  Art is everywhere in Havana, with plenty of galleries and artsy outdoor areas such as San Isidro Art District and  Fusterlandia . For an in-depth session on Cuba’s artistic history, spend a day at the  Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes – Arte Cubano .

A lush green landscape that's filled with tobacco crops in the Valle de Viñales, Cuba

2. Valle de Viñales

Best for tobacco plantations

About 180km (100 miles) west of Havana,  Viñales is one of the most beautiful places in Cuba. It was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List because of its dramatic landscapes of red soils and distinctive limestone outcrops called mogotes.

Viñales has the best casas particulares (private homestays) in Cuba and some of the friendliest and most helpful casa owners, who are the go-to coordinators for local activities. Choose from cycling, horseback riding or hiking to  Los Acuáticos and Valle del Palmarito, or drive to the  Gran Caverna Santo Tomás , Cuba’s largest cave system.

Planning tip:  Touted as the growing spot of the world’s best tobacco, Viñales isn’t fully experienced unless you book an expert-guided tour inside the triangle-roofed drying houses scattered on local tobacco plantations.

3. Varadero

Best Cuban beach resort

Even if every tourist in Cuba decided to meet in  Varadero , there’s still room for more. Varadero is Cuba’s best beach resort, with 20km (12 miles) of white, powdery sand and impossibly crystalline waters.

You can stay in all types of accommodations, from top-end all-inclusive resorts to beautiful casas particulares . Families enjoy Varadero’s safe, shallow shores while revelers dance the night away at Casa de la Música or themed party nights at hotels.

Planning tip:  When you tire of the beach (if that is possible), while away an afternoon sipping rum-infused cocktails at  Mansión Xanadú ’s rooftop bar while gazing out at the peninsula.

Three musicians sitting on a bench and playing music on a street in Santiago de Cuba

4. Santiago de Cuba

Best for understanding Cuba’s revolutionary history

Considered the second capital of Cuba,  Santiago de Cuba was the HQ of the revolutionary guerrillas in the 1950s, but there’s more to experience here. Caribbean rhythms, tropical flavors and frenzied festivals set the rhythm of this colorful city.

Start with a visit to  Cuartel Moncada , one of Cuba’s best museums, with a curated collection of the guerrillas’ paraphernalia and a detailed explanation of the events that started the 1959 revolution. Continue your journey through the past at the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Cobre , Cuba’s most venerated church.

It has an exhibition of offerings given to the patron saint, including those given by the bearded revolutionaries themselves in the 1950s.

Planning tip: In symphony with its rebellious roots, Santiago bursts with a constant party-like atmosphere, reaching its pinnacle at the nationally famous Carnavales  (Carnival) right after the Día de la Rebeldía Nacional (National Rebellion Day) on July 26.

Best for wildlife spotting

Located in the easternmost tip of Cuba, just getting to  Baracoa is an experience in and of itself. The road from Guantánamo leads to La Farola, a sinuous 60km-long (37-mile) road considered the most scenic drive in Cuba.

Expect a three-hour trip through lush mountains, interrupted only by vendors of cucuruchos de Baracoa , a cone-shaped mix of coconut flakes, honey, guava paste and a fruity flavor (such as pineapple and orange rinds) all wrapped up in a palm frond.

Planning tip:  Río Duaba and  El Yunque are great spots for hiking among abundant flora and birdlife, but if you’re looking for a deeper immersion into semi-virgin forests, book a tour at Parque Nacional Alejandro de Humboldt.

Typical pastel-colored house with wooden front doors framed by plaster motifs and wrought-iron ornamental grills, Trinidad.

6. Trinidad

Best for shopping handmade arts and crafts

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 and a World Craft City in 2018,  Trinidad , full of cobblestoned streets and colonial-era mansions, is not only Cuba’s best-preserved “open-air museum,” it’s also a cradle of the best handmade crafts on the island.

Trinidad's needleworkers stitch their linen pieces at open-air markets, exhibiting handmade clothing, delicate embroidered tablecloths and garments such as guayaberas (Yucatán shirts).

Planning tip:  You’re likely to see local markets on pedestrianized parts of the town’s historical center, adjacent to the Plaza Mayor , but artisans also display a daily fair at the base of Torre Manaca Iznaga , 16km (10 miles) outside of Trinidad.

7. Matanzas

Best for live music and dancing

Touted as the Athens of Cuba,  Matanzas is the homeland of some of the country’s most cherished performers, such as Miguel Failde, creator of the cheek-to-cheek danzón (ballroom dance).

The city is also the birthplace of rumba, an Afro-Cuban dance that 70-year-old music group Muñequitos de Matanzas has promoted worldwide. Look out for live music performances held weekly at the  Museo Histórico Provincial – Palacio de Junco .

Local tip:  For travelers looking for a more Cuban Cuba – and not the usual tourist postcard of Varadero – Matanzas offers alluring architecture, featuring neoclassical buildings such as the fully restored Teatro Sauto or living antiques like the  Museo Farmacéutico , founded as the first of its type in Latin America in 1882.

Catamarans in harbour in Cienfuegos, Cuba

8. Cienfuegos

Best spot for water sports including kayaking, fishing and windsurfing

Known as the Pearl of the South,  Cienfuegos is Cuba’s French-inspired city, founded in 1819 on a beautiful natural bay. Deep enough to welcome cruises and mega-yachts, the bay is best enjoyed from Punta Gorda and the nautical centers at Club Cienfuegos and Marlin Marina Cienfuegos.

Planning tip:  Enjoy a day kayaking, fishing or windsurfing, but make sure you include an excursion to  Laguna Guanaroca , Cienfuegos’ natural protected area, for the chance to see flamingoes and take a boat trip on the lake.

9. Camagüey

Best city for strolling maze-like alleys

Elegant and artistic,  Camagüey oozes charm and youthful energy, but it’s the surprisingly intricate street pattern of the city center that usually strikes visitors most.

With most of the grid formed by one-way narrow streets, it’s almost impossible to figure it out if you’re behind the wheel. Instead, stroll around maze-like alleys to discover small but lovely plazas all within walking distance from one another.

Spend a day wandering between the artisan market in  Plaza San Juan de Dios and the less-visited  Plaza del Carmen , home of the inspiring art gallery of  Martha Jiménez Pérez .

Planning tip: Check out Cuba’s narrowest and shortest streets while you're in Camagüey. Callejón del Cura is only 1.4m (4.6ft) wide, while Callejón de la Miseria is 15m (49ft) wide, with only two houses facing each other.

A white-sand beach dotted with tall palm trees stretches out towards the clear waters of Playa Girón, Cuba

10. Playa Girón

Best for swimming, diving and birdwatching

South of Matanzas province,  Playa Girón has one of the country’s best diving sites that isn’t far offshore – no boat required! The clear Caribbean waters offer impressive visibility and a colorful variety of marine fauna. Go for a refreshing swim in a gorgeous cove at  Caleta Buena , or look for coral reefs at  Punta Perdiz .

Playa Girón is also one of the best places in Cuba for birdwatching because it is part of the Parque Nacional Ciénaga de Zapata, which welcomes about two-thirds of the nearly 350 bird species that call Cuba home.

Planning tip:  On the way from Playa Larga to Playa Girón, make sure you stop at  Cueva de Los Peces , one of Cuba’s few cenotes.

When is the best time to visit Cuba?

The best time to visit Cuba depends on your preferences and what you wish to experience during your trip. Cuba has a tropical climate, characterized by warm temperatures and distinct wet and dry seasons. Here's a breakdown of the different seasons to help you choose the best time for your visit:

Dry Season (December to May): This is generally considered the best time to visit Cuba. The weather is pleasantly warm, with lower humidity and minimal rainfall. It's an ideal time for beach lovers and outdoor activities. The peak tourist season falls between December and February, so expect larger crowds and higher prices during this period. March to May offers a more relaxed atmosphere while still enjoying the favorable weather.

Wet Season (June to November): This period experiences higher temperatures, humidity, and occasional rainfall. The wet season includes the official hurricane season (June to November), although the highest risk is from August to October. Despite the rain, there are still plenty of sunny days, and this time of year offers fewer tourists, lower prices, and a greener landscape. If you don't mind occasional showers and want to experience Cuba with fewer crowds, the wet season can be a good option.

It's worth noting that Cuba's weather can be unpredictable, and even during the dry season, there may be sporadic showers. Additionally, the country is large, so climate variations exist between regions. Eastern regions tend to be drier and hotter, while western regions receive more rainfall.

Ultimately, the best time to visit Cuba depends on your priorities. If you prefer fewer crowds and lower prices, the wet season may be suitable. However, if you want optimal beach weather and a vibrant atmosphere, consider visiting during the dry season. Regardless of the season, Cuba's charm and cultural richness are sure to make your visit a memorable one.

Will I need a visa to travel to Cuba?

Yes, most travellers will need a visa to travel to Cuba. The specific visa requirements depend on your nationality and the purpose of your visit. Here are some general guidelines:

Tourist Visa: If you plan to visit Cuba for tourism purposes, you will typically need a tourist visa, also known as a tourist card or "Tarjeta del Turista." This visa allows you to stay in Cuba for a specific period, usually up to 30 days, which can be extended for an additional 30 days while in Cuba. Tourist visas are usually issued by Cuban consulates or authorised travel agencies.

Other Types of Visas: If you are traveling to Cuba for reasons other than tourism, such as for business, journalism, education, or visiting family, you may require a different type of visa. The requirements and application process for these visas vary, and it's advisable to check with the Cuban embassy or consulate in your country for specific information.

Tourist Card for Specific Nationalities: Some countries have agreements with Cuba that allow their citizens to enter with a tourist card rather than a visa. For example, citizens of certain European Union countries, Canada, Mexico, and many others can obtain a tourist card directly from travel agencies, airlines, or Cuban consulates. These cards usually cover a stay of up to 30 days and can be extended while in Cuba.

It's essential to check the visa requirements well in advance of your travel dates to ensure you have the necessary documentation. You may also need to show proof of travel insurance, a return ticket, and sufficient funds for your stay in Cuba. The specific requirements can vary, so it's advisable to consult the official website of the Cuban embassy or consulate in your country or seek assistance from a travel agency specialising in Cuba travel.

Travellers from most countries will need a “tourist card” to visit Cuba as a tourist. You can often usually buy with your airline at the airport but we recommend you check with your airline before. Guidelines can vary so we recommending checking FCO advice for correct and up to date information.

What is the local currency in Cuba, and can I use credit cards?

The local currency in Cuba is the Cuban Convertible Peso (CUC). However, it's important to note that there are two currencies circulating in Cuba: the CUC and the Cuban Peso (CUP). The CUC is the currency typically used by tourists, while the CUP is the currency used by locals for everyday transactions. It's advisable for tourists to primarily use CUC for their expenses.

Regarding credit cards, Cuba has limited acceptance of international credit cards. While major credit cards such as Visa and Mastercard are accepted at some hotels, restaurants, and larger establishments in tourist areas, it's important to be prepared for the fact that credit card acceptance can be inconsistent and unreliable. Some establishments may only accept cash payments in CUC.

It's recommended to bring enough cash (preferably in CUC) to cover your expenses during your stay in Cuba. You can exchange foreign currency, such as US dollars, Euros, or British pounds, into CUC at banks or official exchange offices (CADECA). It's advisable to exchange your money at these authorised institutions to ensure you receive the official exchange rate. Keep in mind that there might be a commission fee for currency exchange transactions.

It's also worth noting that there is a 10% penalty fee when exchanging US dollars into CUC, so it may be more advantageous to bring another major currency to avoid this additional charge.

To ensure you have sufficient funds, it's recommended to plan your budget in advance and have a contingency for any unexpected expenses. It's wise to carry cash in smaller denominations, as obtaining change for larger bills can sometimes be challenging.

Lastly, it's essential to keep your cash and important documents secure during your travels in Cuba. Use hotel safes when available and be cautious of pickpocketing in crowded areas.

Overall, being prepared with sufficient cash and having a backup plan for payments will help ensure a smoother financial experience during your visit to Cuba.

Use official transportation and licensed taxis: When using transportation, it's advisable to use official taxis or those recommended by your accommodation. Licensed taxis have identification markings and are generally considered safer than unlicensed or unofficial ones.

Secure your valuables: Keep your important documents, cash, and valuables secure at all times. Use hotel safes when available and avoid displaying expensive items or large amounts of cash in public.

Will I require any vaccinations to travel to Cuba?

Yes, certain vaccinations are recommended for travelers visiting Cuba. It's important to consult with a healthcare professional or a travel medicine clinic well in advance of your trip to determine the specific vaccinations you may need based on your medical history, current health status, and the areas you plan to visit in Cuba. Here are some common vaccinations recommended for travelers to Cuba:

Routine Vaccinations: Ensure that you are up to date on routine vaccinations, including measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTaP), varicella (chickenpox), polio, and the yearly influenza vaccine.

Hepatitis A: Hepatitis A is recommended for most travelers to Cuba as the disease can be contracted through contaminated food or water. The vaccine provides long-term protection against this viral infection.

Typhoid: Typhoid vaccination is recommended for travelers who may consume food or drinks that have a higher risk of contamination. This includes street food or meals in local establishments with questionable hygiene practices.

Hepatitis B: Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for travelers who may have intimate contact with the local population, require medical treatments or procedures, or engage in activities that may expose them to blood or bodily fluids.

Remember that vaccination requirements and recommendations can change, so it's important to consult with a healthcare professional or travel medicine clinic closer to your travel date to ensure you have the most up-to-date information and personalised advice based on your specific circumstances.

In addition to vaccinations, it's also recommended to take preventive measures to protect against insect bites, practice good hygiene, and ensure safe food and water consumption during your stay in Cuba.

How does the rooming work on tours?

Small group tours in Cuba typically involve a set itinerary where you travel with a group of fellow travellers and a tour leader/guide. Accommodation arrangements  vary depending on the specific tour you choose. Here are some common aspects of rooming arrangements on small group tours:

Shared Rooms: In order to promote camaraderie and facilitate interaction among group members, most tours arrange shared accommodation. This means you will be paired with another member of the same gender from the group to share a room. Roommates may sometimes change periodically throughout the tour.

Single Supplement: If you prefer to have your own room and privacy, you may have the option to pay a single supplement fee. This additional fee allows you to have your own room for the duration of the tour. However, please note that single supplements can vary in cost and availability.

Roommate Matching: Tour operators usually offer roommate matching services, where they try to pair you with a suitable roommate based on your preferences, such as age range. This can help ensure compatibility and a more enjoyable experience for all participants.

Rooming Preferences: When booking your small group tour, it's important to communicate your rooming preferences to the tour operator. If you have specific requirements or preferences, such as sharing with a friend or a specific roommate request, it's advisable to inform the tour operator during the booking process.

It's important to carefully read the tour details and inclusions provided by the tour operator to understand their specific rooming policies. If having your own room is a priority, make sure to inquire about the availability of single supplements and any associated costs before booking your tour.

Keep in mind that while sharing a room with a fellow traveller can be a great way to meet new people and build connections, having your own room provides more privacy and flexibility. Consider your preferences and the dynamics of the tour when deciding whether to opt for a shared room or pay for a single supplement.

Remember to communicate your needs and preferences clearly with the tour operator during the booking process to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable accommodation experience on your small group tour in Cuba.

Can I drink the tap water in Cuba?

It is generally not recommended to drink tap water in Cuba. The tap water in Cuba may contain microorganisms and impurities that can cause stomach discomfort or illness, especially for visitors who are not accustomed to the local water supply. To stay safe and avoid potential health issues, it is best to rely on bottled water or purified water sources during your stay in Cuba.

When purchasing bottled water, ensure that the seal is intact and the brand is reputable. Bottled water is widely available in hotels, restaurants, and stores throughout the country. It's a good idea to carry a reusable water bottle and refill it with purified or bottled water to stay hydrated.

In addition to drinking water, it's important to be cautious when consuming beverages with ice or eating raw fruits and vegetables that may have been washed with tap water. Stick to cooked foods, peeled fruits, and vegetables that have been properly cooked or washed with purified water.

It's worth noting that some accommodations, particularly higher-end hotels, may have their own water purification systems and offer safe drinking water. If you're unsure about the water quality at your specific accommodation, it's best to confirm with the hotel staff.

Embrace the opportunity to immerse yourself in the local way of life and enjoy the rich cultural experiences the country has to offer.

What should I pack for a trip to Cuba?

When packing for a trip to Cuba, it's important to consider the country's climate, local customs, and the activities you plan to engage in. Here is a list of essential items to pack for your trip:

Lightweight and breathable clothing: Cuba has a tropical climate, so pack lightweight and breathable clothing such as shorts, skirts, t-shirts, and dresses. Opt for natural fabrics like cotton or linen that allow air circulation and help you stay cool.

Comfortable walking shoes: Bring comfortable walking shoes or sandals as you'll likely do a lot of exploring and walking around. Choose footwear that provides support and is suitable for both urban areas and uneven terrain.

Light layers and a jacket: Although it's generally warm in Cuba, it's advisable to pack some light layers and a lightweight jacket or sweater for cooler evenings or air-conditioned spaces.

Swimwear: Cuba has beautiful beaches and swimming opportunities, so don't forget to pack your swimwear. It's also handy for hotel pools or water-based activities.

Sun protection: Protect yourself from the strong Cuban sun by packing sunscreen, sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and a lightweight scarf or cover-up for additional sun protection.

Insect repellent: Mosquitoes can be present in certain areas of Cuba, especially during certain seasons. Pack a reliable insect repellent to protect yourself from mosquito bites.

Travel adapter and charger: Cuba uses 110V electricity, so bring a travel adapter to charge your electronic devices. It's also helpful to carry a portable charger for times when you're on the go.

Medications and first aid kit: If you take any prescription medications, be sure to bring an ample supply for the duration of your trip. Additionally, consider packing a basic first aid kit with items such as band-aids, pain relievers, antacids, and any other personal medications you may need.

Travel documents: Ensure you have all the necessary travel documents, including your passport, visa (if required), travel insurance information, and any printed copies of hotel reservations or flight itineraries. Keep these documents in a safe and easily accessible place.

Cash and debit/credit cards: While credit cards are becoming more widely accepted in Cuba, it's still advisable to carry cash for smaller establishments and markets that may not accept cards. Bring a mix of cash in various denominations for convenience.

Travel guidebook or maps: Consider bringing a travel guidebook or maps to help you navigate and learn more about the destinations you plan to visit. It can be handy for finding recommended restaurants, attractions, and local insights.

Lightweight daypack or tote bag: A small daypack or tote bag is useful for carrying essentials during day trips, excursions, or visits to the beach.

Remember to check the weather forecast for your specific travel dates and pack accordingly. Also, keep in mind any specific activities or events you plan to participate in and pack accordingly.

By packing these essentials, you'll be well-prepared for a comfortable and enjoyable trip to Cuba.

Can I fly to Cuba from the US?

Yes, it is possible to fly to Cuba from the United States. However, it's important to note that travel to Cuba for American citizens is subject to certain restrictions and regulations.

In general, there are 12 categories of authorised travel to Cuba for U.S. citizens as outlined by the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). These categories include family visits, official government business, journalistic activities, professional research and meetings, educational activities, religious activities, humanitarian projects, and more. Each category has specific requirements and documentation that need to be met.

For leisure travel, the category that was previously known as "people-to-people" travel, which allowed individuals to visit Cuba for educational and cultural exchange purposes, has been eliminated. However, organised group tours or cruise ship travel may still be available under certain circumstances.

Before planning a trip to Cuba from the United States, it's important to familiarise yourself with the latest travel regulations and requirements set by the U.S. government. This includes obtaining the necessary licenses or documentation, if applicable, and following the rules and guidelines for travel to Cuba.

Additionally, it's recommended to check with the airline you plan to fly with, as some airlines may have specific policies and procedures for travel to Cuba from the United States.

As travel regulations and restrictions can change, it's advisable to consult official sources such as the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of the Treasury for the most up-to-date and accurate information regarding travel to Cuba from the United States.

Travel tips for Cuba trips

Cuba is rich with arts, culture, history, food, and natural scenery, and there’s far too much for travelers to fully experience in just a few days’ time. Our Cuba tours are 10 days long (or 13, if you opt for our extension to West Cuba) to give travelers plenty of time to take it all in.

Thanks to its location in the Caribbean, Cuba is warm all year round. If you’re considering vacation packages to Cuba, keep in mind the country’s wet and dry seasons.

  • The dry season, which lasts from November through April and peaks in January and February, is an ideal time of year to visit Cuba. Travelers who book Cuba travel packages this time of year will enjoy pleasant weather and little rainfall.
  • The rainy season lasts from May through October, with August and September typically receiving the most rain. If you plan to travel to Cuba during the wet season, be sure to bring an umbrella and weatherproof clothing.
  • Regardless of the weather, Cuba hosts lively festivals throughout the year. Carnival, which comes to Havana in August, is among the country’s most colorful and festive events—and an excellent reason to consider Cuba travel packages during that month.

For many travelers, Cuba is one of the most intriguing countries in Latin America . With its preserved colonial architecture, old-fashioned cars, fascinating history, and unspoiled landscapes, it’s no wonder why. Here are several highlights travelers can experience on our Cuba escorted tours:

  • Old Havana.  This historic part of Havana is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to several of the city’s most beautiful and historically significant structures.
  • Plaza Vieja.  When you visit Cuba, this city square and bustling gathering spot in Old Havana is where you’ll find notable buildings, such as the 18th-century Casa del Conde de Jaruco.
  • Museum of the Revolution.  Housed in Havana’s former Presidential Palace, this museum details the Fidel Castro-led overthrow of former dictator Fulgencio Batista’s government.
  • Guanabacoa.  This neighborhood in Havana is known for its Afro-Cuban food, music, arts, and culture, as well as its namesake museum.
  • Finca Vigía.  Literature buffs who visit Cuba won’t want to miss seeing this former residence of Ernest Hemingway in Havana, where he wrote some of his most famous works.
  • Castillo de los Tres Reyes del Morro.  This clifftop fortress, complete with a lighthouse, was built in the 16th and 17th centuries to protect Havana’s harbor from pirates and foreign invaders.
  • Hotel Nacional de Cuba.  This hotel in Havana is considered a symbol of Cuban history, culture, and identity. Travelers on our Cuba tours can explore historical objects displayed throughout the hotel, and enjoy a mojito, Cuba’s signature drink.
  • Che Guevara Mausoleum.  Situated in Santa Clara, this memorial houses the remains of the famed revolutionary fighter Che Guevara. At the site, travelers will also find a statue of Guevara, and a museum that chronicles his life.
  • Bay of Pigs.  With support from the U.S. government, in April 1961 Cuban exiles attempted—and failed—to invade Cuba via this turquoise bay on the country’s southwest coast. The site’s historical significance makes it a popular spot for history buffs on Cuba educational tours.
  • Cayo Levisa.  If you want to enjoy nature when you travel to Cuba, you won’t want to miss this island off Cuba’s northern coast. It’s accessible via ferry and is home to coral reefs, mangrove forests, birds, and marine life.
  • Trinidad.  Cobblestone streets and beautifully restored buildings make the town of Trinidad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a must-visit for travelers on our organized trips to Cuba.
  • Sancti Spíritus.  Founded in the 16th century, this city is the oldest in interior Cuba and charms travelers on Cuba vacations with its colorful architecture and narrow streets.
  • Viñales.  This culturally rich area, situated near the western end of Cuba and surrounded by mountains, is a hub of agricultural production—particularly tobacco.

Check out some of staffer Ashley’s favorite ways to soak up culture in Cuba →

  • Lightweight clothing.  Cuba is in the Caribbean and stays warm all year round. Keep cool and comfortable in lightweight clothing made from materials such as linen.
  • Sun protection.  The sun can be quite strong in Cuba. We recommend that travelers going on our trips to Cuba pack brimmed hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen, as well as clothing and accessories that can shield bare skin from the sun’s rays.
  • A light rain jacket.  We suggest that travelers on tours of Cuba, especially those who depart during the wet season, bring a lightweight rain jacket or small umbrella.
  • A camera.  Cuba is unique for many reasons, including the fact that it’s filled with well-preserved buildings and cars that give the island country its famously vintage atmosphere. If you plan to travel on one of our tours to Cuba, pack your camera so you don’t miss a single shot.
  • Cash.  American credit and debit cards aren’t accepted or usable in Cuba, so be sure to bring cash that you can spend or convert to the local currency.
  • Sturdy walking shoes or sneakers.  Good shoes will help you navigate cobblestone streets, farms, and a variety of other surfaces with ease.
  • A bathing suit.  Travelers who join our trips to Cuba can snorkel at the Bay of Pigs and Cayo Levisa.
  • Mosquito repellent.  Mosquitoes thrive in Cuba’s warm, humid climate. If you book one of our Cuba packages, be sure to bring repellent that will keep them away.
  • Washcloths.  Most hotels in Cuba do not provide them.
  • Hand sanitizer.  Handwashing facilities aren’t always readily available in Cuba. Bring some hand sanitizer just in case.

Spanish, African, and Caribbean flavors play an important part in traditional Cuban dishes. Common foods often include pork, chicken, yucca, plantains, beans, and rice. Cuban coffee is also popular and is known for being strongly brewed. Travelers who book Cuba vacation packages can try these signature dishes on tour:

  • Ropa vieja.  This hearty stew, made with shredded beef, tomato sauce, onions, and peppers, and served with rice, is the national dish of Cuba.
  • Medianoche.  Similar to the popular Cuban sandwich, this one is filled with ingredients such as shredded pork, pickles, and mustard, but it’s served on an egg-based bread. Its name translates to midnight in Spanish—perhaps a nod to its popularity as a late-night snack among partygoers.
  • Vaca frita.  To make this dish, whose name translates to “fried beef,” meat is boiled until soft, then shredded, marinated in garlic, lime juice, and salt, and pan-fried for a crispy finish. It’s often served with rice.
  • Picadillo.  The Cuban take on this popular Latin comfort food is made with ground beef, vegetables, and seasonings. Other flavorful ingredients vary by region and can include raisins, olives, and capers. Like many other dishes you’re likely to try on our tours in Cuba, it’s often served with rice.
  • Plátanos maduros.  Ripe, fried plantains are a beloved side dish and snack in Cuba.
  • For Americans, visiting Cuba is a complex process. Our guided tours make it easy, not just because we plan your itinerary from start to finish, but we also help with all of the necessary entry requirements, such as visas. Ease of travel is just one of  four reasons to take a guided tour of Cuba .
  • Two currencies are used in Cuba. The first is the Cuban Peso, which is used primarily by the locals for basic, staple products. The second is the Cuban Convertible Peso (CUC), mostly used by tourists. The currency you will be using for your tour is the CUC.
  • Visitors who book Cuba travel packages from USA gateways land in Havana, the country’s historic capital city. In Cuba, you can exchange American or Canadian dollars for CUC at the Havana airport, as well as hotels, exchange bureaus, and in some banks. Currently, there is a 13%–15% surcharge fee for exchanging USD or CAD to CUC.
  • When exchanging currency, your passport will be required at the time of the transaction. It is also important to note that most places will not accept torn or marked bills when converting to CUC.
  • Credit cards, debit cards, and ATM cards issued by U.S. banks are currently unusable in Cuba. As such, purchases and payments for services must be made in local currency. You should plan on bringing enough cash with you for meals that are not included and anything else you may wish to purchase.
  • Although some small businesses and taxi drivers will accept American dollars, paying in CUC is strongly encouraged. Canadian dollars are widely accepted.
  • Our advice for travelers who book vacation packages to Cuba: Come with an open mind and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone. Cuba’s people are warm and outgoing, and they can provide unique insight into a country that remains somewhat of a mystery to many travelers. Don’t be afraid to engage with locals, whether that means chatting about their country’s complex history, or even taking a spin on the dance floor with them during a salsa lesson.

  • The guesthouses (casas) we use are much nicer than your average Cuban dwelling and each room is unique. To help set your expectations correctly, please read the ‘Accommodation’ section of the Essential Trip Information.
  • Luxuries such as air conditioning, plush pillows, and fly screens, are often scarce. Part of the experience here is learning to appreciate everyday Cuban resourcefulness.
  • Internet access can be hard to come by, and when it's available it's often unreliable and expensive. Treat this as a great opportunity to take a break from modern devices and have a true holiday.
  • As this trip covers a lot of land, you'll be spending quite a bit of time travelling. It’s all part of the adventure and a great way to get to know your fellow travellers. Please read the itinerary carefully for travel time estimates.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck trip for entry into Cuba. You will also need a visa to enter Cuba, the nature of which is somewhat different than what many other countries require. The Cuban government requires all foreign visitors to have a Cuban visa, sometimes referred to as a "Tourist Card," for which there is no official application process. Cuban immigration officials will collect one half of this two-part card upon your arrival in the country, and the other half upon your departure. Tauck will obtain your Cuban visa, which will be given to you in Miami, along with the documents for your included charter flight from Miami to Havana.

In addition, other special documentation will be needed to complete the requirements for travel to Cuba; more details about this required documentation will be sent to you with your booking confirmation. Please review the details in the Instruction Sheet and  Travel Affidavit . You must retain these documents for a period of at least five years.

Please Note: Because many of you are traveling as a U.S. citizen with Tauck on a People-to-People educational exchange travel itinerary operated under a license granted to Tauck by the United States Department of the Treasury, Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), you are legally licensed and authorized to travel to Cuba.  Before departing on your trip, we will give you a Letter of Authorization from Tauck stating that you have permission to travel under that license, to keep as part of your travel documents.

If you are a citizen of another country but legally reside in the U.S., you may travel on Tauck's People-to-People trip to Cuba as long as you have a valid passport from your country of citizenship, as well as a residency card or alien card (or "green card") to establish your legal U.S. residency when returning to the U.S. from Cuba upon your arrival in Miami.

If you are a Cuban-born U.S. citizen, your travel document requirements depend on when you originally departed Cuba. If you departed Cuba prior to December 31, 1970, you will require either a PE-11 visa (which can take from six to eight weeks to process, is valid for a one-time entry for 30 days, and expires within 90 days of issue) or a Cuban passport; the choice is yours. If you left Cuba after January 1, 1971, you will require a Cuban passport, which can take from three to four months to obtain. If you will need help in obtaining one of these documents, please let us know at the time of booking.

If you are a citizen of another country and do not legally reside in the U.S., you may travel on Tauck's People-to-People trip to Cuba as long as you have the proper documentation that allows you to enter the U.S. for the start of the trip and return to the U.S. at the end of the trip. A multi-entry U.S. visa is required.

A travel affidavit is also required for all travelers to Cuba, regardless of nationality. Please use this link to apply for your travel affidavit at least 75 days prior to your trip: https://cubatravelservices.com/tauck-travel-affidavit/

Because all guests on this tour (U.S. citizens and non-U.S. citizens alike) will be arriving into Cuba from the U.S., a Cuban visa is required of all travelers. Tauck will obtain your Cuban visa for you during your tour.

Please note that you will not be traveling to Cuba as a tourist. You will be traveling as part of the People-to-People educational exchange.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen. You must retain these documents for a period of at least five years.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Health Safety and Mobility

Our People-to-People cultural exchange include visits to rural areas, agricultural facilities and small villages, as well as to various sections of Havana with centuries-old streets and buildings with limited access. You should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances over unpaved and uneven terrain. Both hotels are equipped with elevators.  The road conditions in Cuba are improving; however, paved roads, especially in rural areas, are often in poor condition. Some roads to rural locations are not paved and some out-of-the-way destinations are accessible only by these roads; other roads may be unpaved and bumpy. Our People-to-People cultural exchange itinerary includes several early morning starts and leaves little scheduled free time.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN AND MOBILITY ISSUES:  This Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate oxygen tanks, wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Oxygen tanks are strictly prohibited in many foreign countries on regional flights aboard small aircraft, such as those intra-tour flights featured on this Tauck journey.  Likewise, the very limited cargo capacity on such flights prohibits the transport of wheelchairs or motorized scooters.

Travelers should also bear in mind that the infrastructure in many foreign countries, particularly in developing countries, often presents severe and even insurmountable challenges for those with walking difficulties or other mobility issues.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one traveler.  Travelers requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it. While drinking water is generally safe at the hotels on the journey, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on your motor coach.

Airline Disinsection

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued a guidance letter that requires airlines and travel agents to disclose to consumers countries that require the use of insecticides by airlines. Please click  here for more information.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Luxury Trips to Cuba

Why should you book luxury cuba tours with us.

Pastel-hued villages, rum-scented squares and cigar-rolled plantations. Cuba is a favourite on our list.

After its renowned 1959 revolution, Cuba was mostly closed off from the outside world. In recent years, this colorful country has climbed back on to the world stage, drawing attention and welcoming visitors to explore its hidden treasures. Blending Latin and Caribbean influences, Cuba’s sensory world of art, music and gastronomy is mesmerising. Take a step into the past as colonial-era architecture sets the scene, Cadillacs roam the roads and jazz music fills the streets. Looking to experience Cuba’s artistic culture or explore the famed sugar plantations? On a luxury trip to Cuba with us, you’ll see that and much more.

Cayman islands + cuba: the ultimate twin trip, colonial cities and cultural discoveries in cuba, havana, santiago & baracoa: off the beaten track…, havana: a unique cuban city break, create your own itinerary, what to see and do in cuba.

As ever, if you can’t see it here then we can still plan it for you.

After its renowned 1959 revolution, Cuba was mostly closed off from the outside world. In recent years however it has burst back onto the world stage. A luxury vacation in Cuba will immerse you into a sensory world of music, arts and eating, all set against the rum-soaked scenery of its colonial-era architecture and time-capsule streetlife, where antique Cadillacs still throng the roads of Old Havana. When we talk about luxury here, we’re not talking about gold-plated taps or all-inclusive resorts. We’re alluding to the on-the-ground access we can provide, which plays out across settings that are undoubtedly glamorous, stylish, and infinitely chic. Our local guides will truly immerse you into the best that Cuba has to offer.

WHAT MAKES CUBA UNIQUE?

Havana, Cuba

With so much to offer with any luxury vacation to Cuba, there’s no replacing an expert tour around its bustling, iconic capital; letting you dive headfirst into its curious cultural life and historical legacies. Havana stands out as one of the most fascinating cultural hubs in this part of the world – filled with historic plazas and laidback eateries. During your Cuban vacation, you can also retrace the steps of Ernest Hemingway – the ‘Old Man’ himself. The famously bullish American author made a home here for many years, which has been celebrated with the endlessly fascinating Hemingway Museum and the house that was his base.

A PRIVATE TOUR THROUGH OLD HAVANA

Havana, Cuba

Once you leave the cities behind you, Cuba opens up into a landscape of staggering natural beauty. Particularly true of the East of Cuba, where we send clients on a journey to the Afro-Cuban stronghold of Santiago de Cuba, revolutionary legacies in the jaw-dropping Sierra Maestra Mountains and the hidden coves and fishing villages of the area’s rarely trodden coastline. Our private guides are on hand throughout these luxury Cuban tours to introduce you to hidden-away locales like the waters of the Yara River, where you can ride, hike and explore the surrounding landscapes. They almost defy description, with their rugged coastlines, wild rivers, palm-covered hills, and secluded lodges.

COVES AND STRONGHOLDS

beautiful cuba tour

Cuba’s rollercoaster recent history has been the subject of innumerable books and films. But it’s important not to overlook its enviable offer of scenic hotels and resorts, exquisite dining, and cultural events for discerning travelers. The town of Trinidad, located in the midst of the island, has culture and curios in spadefuls, being known as perhaps the most stunning town in Cuba. Head out on an excursion to drink in its pastel-hued terraces, flanked by luscious mountains and drooping palms, while getting to grips with everything that this UNESCO world heritage city has to offer (not least the smell of freshly cooking food which wafts throughout this vibrant settlement).

A TASTE OF OLD WORLD LUXURY

beautiful cuba tour

The Bay of Pigs may be best known for a failed American military invasion that took place in 1961, but is today an unmissable component in any of our luxury vacations to Cuba. Not only can you learn about this truly tense period of 20th century history, but you can also take in the breathtaking views of the bay – a regular haunt for frolicking dolphins. It’s also one of the best places on the island to snorkel. Relax on the white sand beach before kicking back at La Cueva, a private restaurant famed across the country for its mouth-watering food and excellent wine.

Listen to the sound of jazz as it ricochets off the colorful walls.

Stylish and chic, Havana is one of the most fascinating cultural hubs in this part of the world. Curious minds will fall in love with the historic plazas, laidback eateries and art deco architecture. Our expert guides will truly immerse you into a Cuban lifestyle as you ride in an antique Cadillac, get a private lesson on cigar making and dance the night away in an exclusive salsa lesson.

Discover carpets of rainforest and intrigue on this island.

Holding the title of the most beautiful town in Cuba, the pastel-hued, colonial town of Trinidad is found in the province of Santi Spíritus. Surrounded by luscious mountains and towering palms, Trinidad has a lot to offer; from the entrancing smell of freshly cooked meals to the quaint cobbled streets that line the town. We’ll take you on a history tour of the sugar plantations or on a snorkelling excursion in La Boca. Doesn’t that sound perfect for your next vacation?

Experience a slow and relaxed way of life in Cuba’s scenic backyard.

Once you spy a cigar-chewing guajiro ploughing through a rust-coloured tobacco field, you’ll know you’ve reached the tranquil farming town of Viñales. Opt to bed down in a luxury yet traditional homestay, where the locals will guide you in embracing Cuba’s calming countryside lifestyle. Dive into the best of Cuba’s natural world by horse-riding through the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Valle de Viñales or trekking to Los Aquaticos – the Water People – to learn about the magical healing waters.

The 6 Best Cuba Tours For Unforgettable Adventures That Are Achievable & Affordable

Expert travel storyteller Jordan Adkins, founder of InspiredByMaps.com, brings a decade of adventures across 101 countries and 450+ UNESCO sites into rich, off-the-beaten-path narratives, melding ecological expertise with genuine, seasoned travel insights. His full bio can be found here.

In the Caribbean Sea, not too far away from Miami, is Cuba , the Caribbean’s largest island. Cuba is often known for its cigars, classic older cars, old squares, and lively people. Famed as a perfect place to relax on the beach or watch the historic cars drive by. Cuba is most popular for its cheap all-inclusive vacations, but there is more to see outside those resort walls.

The long, narrow island that makes up this Caribbean nation is roughly 1,200 kilometers long and only 100 km wide. Cuba comprises lowland plains primarily used for farming, with just around one-third of the country being covered by high mountains and rolling hills. From alpine forests to jungles and plains, Cuba boasts a wide variety of regions. With a wide variety of animal and plant life, you are bound to see something unique when you visit Cuba.

The Ciboney and Guanahatabey people were Cuba’s first settlers. The Taino people of Venezuela occupied the island until about a thousand years ago. After defeating the Taino in 1511, Spanish armies seized control of the island.

Numerous Taino people were forced into slave labor by the Spanish. Overwork and infections brought by Europeans caused the majority of deaths.

By 1902, Cuba had achieved independence. American forces had assisted in the 1898 expulsion of the Spanish from the island. Nevertheless, the United States exerted considerable control over the island until 1959, when Fidel Castro’s communist rebels seized power. Until February 2008, when his brother Ral Castro took over, Fidel Castro served as the country’s president, prime minister, and military leader. Miguel Dáz-Canel became the new head in 2018.

Cuba’s vibrant and well-known culture is a result of the island’s blend of indigenous, African, and European influences. The country’s transition to communism in 1959 significantly impacted the culture, both positively and negatively. Cuba’s history is present in its cuisine, language, culture, and, above all, music. In Havana, music is always playing, and people are always lively. Cuba is a beautiful place to discover, one to truly explore.

Because of Cuba’s past, visiting Cuba can be difficult for some as travel is restricted. A visa is needed before departing, and some countries will limit you from seeing if you’ve been to Cuba. It’s also almost impossible to book a trip to Cuba independently.

So instead of securing an all-inclusive resort and staying on property the entire time, why not take the time to see the whole country in detail, where you can meet the locals, learn about the traditions and see every corner of the country? That’s why a multiday organized tour is your best bet when traveling to Cuba. Here are the top six best tours in Cuba.

CLIENT REVIEWS

Testimonials from our cuba travelers.

With over 22 years of Guided Tours to Cuba you could say we’ve made a few friends along the way.

Cultural Journeys is proud to provide world class travel options for out wonderful clients.

We pride ourselves on creating tours which make wonderful memories and return customers.

My experience in Cuba was so enriched by the excellent planning by Mary and our “person on the ground” Abel.

This trip was so well balanced with experiencing the “real” countryside, the UNESCO site of Trinidad and the city life, art and history of Havana.  I am so glad to have seen Cuba NOW and with the guidance of Mary and Abel.

Best wishes for great trips ahead!!!

Cuba Traveler

Simply stated, I have yet to meet any tour guide who comes close to Mary’s magnetic personality, depth of knowledge, connections people – hotel concierges, taxi drivers, shopkeepers, artists, archaeologists, historians, or street people.

Everywhere we went she was greeted with warm embraces, smiles and joyful conversation. We were invited into private homes, artist studios, archaeological digs, cigar rollers and late night tango sessions. Mary created a trip (both in Cuba and Argentina) that were life-changing experiences for me, and for the people I traveled with.

I am convinced the best way to learn is to get off the tourist path and behind the scenes where the real Cuba exists. Cultural-Journeys did just this for our small group on a people to people exchange. I am totally fascinated by the people and country and ready to sign up for another adventure.

Our trip to Cuba with Mary Drobny was one of the highlights of my life. Mary made it the wonderful experience that it was. She made sure that we saw the cultural wonders of Havana, but she didn’t stop there. She introduced us to a priest who was doing heroic work with people with AIDS, she introduced us to artists, musicians, scuba divers, dancers, Santorian priests, restaurant owners, tour guides–all friends of hers. It was truly Havana and Trinidad by day and night. She did all in her power to customize the tour, and it was all so exciting. I would highly recommend Mary Drobny and her Cultural Adventures tour to everyone who wants to enjoy and gain perspective on Cuba!

Culture and customs.

With   Spanish ,   African   and Creole influences, modern Cuba is home to so many cultural components – some of which don’t feel super ‘modern’ at all!

You won’t be surprised that Cubans love music and dancing – with everything from Afro-Cuban rhythms to classic melodies filling the air in clubs, bars, restaurants and on street corners. The modern arts are also alive here, with ballet, contemporary dance and film rising in popularity – so much so, Havana is now home to internationally recognised film, literature and music festivals.

Living in a Communist country means Cubans sometimes go without the luxury items that many Westerners take for granted, with certain foods and consumer goods not available. Despite this, events like birthdays, holidays and marriages are celebrated with gusto, with special meals, music and dance featuring. This love of life is also evident in the street parties, festivals and fiestas that are celebrated throughout the year. Coffee, cigars and rum flow freely, and people dance to the sound of trumpets and guitars in city streets.

Life in the cities and life in rural areas can be quite different, but the pace of living is consistently Cuban – you’re on local time now, so go with the flow.

History and government

Ancient history.

Before the arrival of the Spanish in 1492, Cuba was home to Mesoamerican cultures, including the indigenous Guanajatabey and Taino people. The Guanajatabey were hunter-gatherers and fishers, and Taino communities also harvested yuca, cotton and tobacco. Spanish colonialist Bartolome de las Casas estimated that Taino populations in Cuba had reached 350,000 by the end of the 15th century.

By then, Christopher Columbus had landed in Cuba and claimed the land for   Spain, naming it Isla Juana. In 1511, Diego Velazquez de Cuellar founded Baracoa, the first Spanish settlement in Cuba, and three years later what’s now known as Havana was built.

20th century

In 1902, after periods under Spanish, British and United States rule and involvement in the Spanish–American war, Cuba got its independence. Despite the economy booming, leaders at this time ruled through corruption and control. This was until revolutionary Fidel Castro led a 9000-strong guerrilla army into Havana in 1959, forcing military dictator Fulgencio Batista to flee. Castro became the leader and his brother, Raul, his deputy. What followed was an attempt by the United States to overthrow Castro’s communist rule at the Bay of Pigs, and tension and trade embargoes following the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

Standing alongside Castro as an equally prominent political figure, Che Guevara (although Argentinean) holds a very important place in Cuban history. A revolutionary, author, doctor and military leader, Guevara played a pivotal role in the guerrilla campaign leading up to the Cuban Revolution and the defence of the Bay of Pigs, as well as in diplomatic relations, up until his death in 1967. It’s impossible not to notice the reverence for Guevara when visiting Cuba, with street art, statues and museums dedicated to the man Cubans simply call ‘El Che’ found all over the country.

In April 2011 Fidel Castro was succeeded as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba by his brother Raul Castro. Cuba’s political relationship with other countries, including its close neighbours, is ever-evolving, with the US recently beginning to ease restrictions on trade, tourism and other industries. But a snapshot of 50 years of isolation remains in the cars, architecture, and culture that is a contemporary Cuban street.

Eating and drinking

Cuba may not have culinary fame compared to some of its neighbours, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be missing out on some great food during your time here. Cuba typically doesn’t have access to a wide range of ingredients, so your dining experience may not be as varied as you’d expect from some other   nearby destinations. Regardless, there are some Central American favourites that are definitely worth trying.

What to eat in Cuba

These small pastries can be either sweet or savoury. Cream cheese, guava and beef are the most popular fillings and make for a cheap, tasty meal on the run. Think empanadas, Cuban style.

Cuban sandwich Otherwise known as a mixto, this sandwich is a simple snack that has made its way north into Florida and has become one of the quintessential images of Cuban food beyond its borders. Ham, pork, cheese, mustard and sometimes salami layered between bread and grilled – what’s not to like?

Ropa vieja Not only is this one of the national dishes of Cuba, but it’s also found all over the Caribbean, in Spain and even the Philippines! It may literally translate to ‘old clothes’, but that’s definitely not what it tastes like – slow-cooked pulled beef with vegetables, usually served with maduros (fried plantains), black beans and rice.

Fritura de maiz These deep-fried cheese and cornmeal fritters are popular street food snacks in Cuba. A great choice for vegetarians; throw a couple of these back and you’ll be feeling the Cuban spirit.

Moros y cristianos

Rice and beans is not just rice and beans. Black beans and white rice are added to a base of peppers, garlic and onion and simmered with herbs, creating a flavourful addition to any meal and served up at virtually every Cuban restaurant you'll come across.

If you're feeling a little bit peckish and are on the go, seek out some tostones. These twice-fried plantain chips are very popular in a lot of Latin American countries and are an easy (and often cheap) snack.

Although flan is knon all around Central and South America as an essential dessert, Cuban flan has a slightly different spin. It's made with evaporated and sweetened condensed milk, giving it a thicker and creamier caramel custard finish than fresh milk varieties. Get ready for a seriously delicioys sugar high.

Coppelia ice cream Line up with locals to savour a sweet scoop from Coppelia ice cream parlour. This Cuban institution serves tried and true flavours like chocolate and vanilla as well as exotic favourites like mango and coconut.

What to drink in Cuba

Rum The tipple of choice in Cuba is rum, obviously. Savour some Havana Club straight up, have it mixed in a minty mojito or sip on a Cuba Libre – rum, cola and lime.

Coffee Cuban coffee is of legendary quality, so be sure to get your caffeine hit with a small but rich cup of liquid gold. Drink it like the locals do, as a cafecito or Cafe Cubano. This type of espresso-style coffee is usually sweetened with raw cane sugar and stirred in with the first drips of espresso to get the best result.

Geography and environment

This island nation sitting in the Caribbean Sea is home to a diverse range of environments: rolling hills to tobacco plantations, beaches and coral reefs to tropical rainforests. With more than 20% of the island covered with natural parks, there's incredible biodiversity, making it a great place for eco-adventures, hiking, snorkelling and diving.

Large cities like Havana evoke a time gone by. Grand buildings dating back to the 1950s exude a fading beauty, which makes for great photographs but can also make daily life quite difficult. Due to a lack of building materials, new housing and infrastructure are rare, making living conditions quite cramped for Cuban city-dwellers. Rural life offers more space and a quieter pace, but reduced access to services. Regardless of where you holiday in Cuba, the people are generally kind and hospitable in both the big cities and small towns.

Cuba may not be known for its shopping, but look closely and you’ll find lots of unique souvenirs to take home as a reminder of your holiday. Before heading home, check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to import some items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand, for example, have strict quarantine laws. The United States also has restrictions on the amount of tobacco and alcohol that can be brought back from Cuba.

What to buy

Art Cuba has a keen appreciation of the fine arts, so it’s not hard to find unique artworks by up-and-coming local artists being sold at galleries and markets. It also makes for a meaningful memento of your time away.

Cigars The cliche is unsurprisingly true – cigars are everywhere in Cuba. Be sure to buy cigars from authorised sellers, as fakes are common. Purchasing straight from the factory is usually best.

Coffee Cuban coffee is top quality, so stock up before you leave to enjoy a taste of Cuba in the comfort of your own home. Do check, however, if your country of origin allows plant-based materials to pass through quarantine.

Music With such a rich musical heritage, Cuba is a great place to pick up a hand-crafted instrument or, if travelling light, a CD or a local artist’s info to add to your playlist.

Festivals and events

Havana international jazz festival.

Local and international artists head to Havana every January to become a part of the happening jazz scene. From the impressive Teatro Nacional de Cuba to the city streets, the sweet sounds of jazz fill the air of Havana for the duration of the festival.

Habanos Cigar Festival

In February, cigar connoisseurs gather to celebrate their love of the best cigar in the world – the Habano. With tastings, visits to plantations and factories, master classes and cigar-rolling contests on offer, this festival will intrigue curious travellers and delight cigar enthusiasts.

Santiago de Cuba Carnival

Watch this historic city come alive in July with street parades full of vibrant costumes, drums and dancing. This epic public celebrations date back to at least the 17th century and are held all around the country, but Santiago de Cuba hosts the biggest, brightest and most traditional of them all.

Public holidays that may impact travel include:

Liberation Day

Victory of the Armed Forces

Anniversary of Jose Marti’s birth

Bay of Pigs Victory

National Revolutionary Festival

Anniversary of Che Guevara’s death

Independence Day

Anniversary of Camila Cienfuegos’s death

Anniversary of Antonio Maceo’s death

Please note dates of Cuba's public holidays may vary.

Cuba travel FAQs

When is the best time to visit cuba.

Cuba's subtropical climate is ideal for exploration, with most places catching the cool trade winds that blow in from the coast, providing pleasant year-round temperatures. June, July and August are usually the hottest months – the dry season runs from November to April and the wet season from May to October. Even in the rainy season, downpours are short and shouldn't impede travel plans. Tropical storms and hurricanes are more prevalent in September and October but rarely cause problems for travellers.

Do I need a visa to travel to Cuba?

Tourists of most nationalities require a 'Tourist Card' which is similar to a tourist visa. These can be obtained through travel agents in your home country, or directly from Cuban embassies and consulates. Depending on the airline you are travelling with to Cuba, you may also be able to purchase the tourist card at the airport from the airline on the day of your departure – please check with your airline for more information.

If you are a US citizen, American permanent resident, or hold any type of American Visa and are considering travelling to Cuba, please refer to the US Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs website –  travel.state.gov  – for the latest advice.

We recommend travelling to Cuba via Canada, Europe, and South or Central America. Travellers who have been to Cuba are ineligible to participate in the ESTA Visa Wavier Program and must apply for a tourist visa to enter or transit via the United States.

Remember to check the entry requirements for any destinations you will travel or transit through both to and from Cuba.

The page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Is tipping customary in Cuba?

As most Cubans live modest lifestyles, leaving a tip for good service is a great idea and welcomed.

There is almost always free entertainment in bars and restaurants; the musicians and singers are usually not paid by the venue, so we encourage you to tip when you have enjoyed the performance. Tour leaders, restaurant workers, hotel porters, cleaning staff and taxi drivers will appreciate a small sum – but be sure to tip in Cuban pesos as foreign currency isn’t easily exchanged in Cuba.

It’s important to carry around small denominations of currency to leave tips during your holiday, so you can tip an amount you feel comfortable with.

What is the internet access like in Cuba?

Internet access isn't widespread throughout Cuba, but availability is improving. The internet can sometimes be accessed from government departments and larger hotels, and main squares in many cities now have wi-fi accessibility. You will need to purchase an internet card from certain hotels and outlets to gain access in any location, including in public areas.

Please note that although connectivity is improving, the connection may still be slow, some websites may be censored, and the cost is typically quite high.

Can I use my mobile phone while in Cuba?

Your mobile phone may or may not work while in Cuba, depending on what type of phone you have. Before leaving your home country, ensure roaming is activated with your provider, but be aware that your phone may not get reception due to Cuba having the lowest mobile phone network penetration in Latin America.

If you intend to activate global roaming while in Cuba, be sure to check with your service provider to find out about any fees you may incur when using this option, as sometimes this can be expensive.

What are the toilets like in Cuba?

Public toilets are rare in Cuba, but western-style flushable toilets are available in hotels, bars and restaurants. Bringing your own toilet paper and hand soap or hand sanitiser is recommended as often these are not provided. Due to import restrictions, toilet seats can be considered a luxury and may be missing from some facilities.

Can I drink the water in Cuba?

It's not advisable to drink water from the tap in Cuba. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable bottle or canteen with filtered water if you can – your group leader will provide larger and less disposable water containers for refills on private transport days when they have the resources available. It's also best to avoid ice in drinks and to peel fruit and vegetables rather than eating washed or unwashed produce.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Cuba?

Some credit cards are accepted in Cuba (Visa and Mastercard are usually more widely accepted), although some cards linked to US banking institutions won't be accepted. Debit cards (even Visa debit) generally have problems working. We recommend you bring multiple cards from different banks to be sure you have access to funds. Ensure you also have enough cash and other forms of payment, as credit card facilities may not always be available.

What is ATM access like in Cuba?

ATMs are accessible in large cities like Havana and Santiago de Cuba but are rare and almost non-existent in other parts of Cuba. Ensure you have other payment options available in case you cannot access an ATM while travelling.

What is the weather like in Cuba?

Cuba enjoys Caribbean vibes all year round, and sits below the Tropic of Cancer, so you’ll enjoy a tropical climate with north-easterly trade winds that blow year-round.

May to October is usually considered the wet season, with higher maximum temperatures each day (around 32°C) and more sunlight each day, averaging 10 hours. September and October is hurricane season in the region, and this time of year is usually hot and overcast, with a higher chance of rainfall.

November to April is usually the drier season in Cuba, with maximum temperatures sitting around 26°C, and an average of 8 hours of sunlight each day. The winter months are clearer, slightly more humid and more comfortable than summer.

Is Cuba safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Cuba has made some significant steps in recent years to ensure LGBTQIA+ rights in the country. Homosexuality is legal and accepted in Cuba, and there are some anti-discrimination laws in place for employment, service provisions and gender identity. However, same-sex marriage recognition is still pending, and stigma still remains in some parts of society, especially in rural areas.

The Cuban National Center for Sex Education (CENESEX) works to support the LGBTQIA+ community in Cuba and hosts rallies to educate and advocate.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting   Equaldex   or   ILGA   before you travel.

Is Cuba accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

As Cuba has not had the same infrastructure development as other countries, you may find some mobility challenges when travelling. Havana’s streets are often crowded, and sidewalks can at times be rugged or even nonexistent. This is the same with other cities and towns around the country. Also, a lot of public transportation isn’t geared toward travellers who use a wheelchair, so private travel may be the only option to get around.

If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Of all the wonderful places to visit in Cuba, the city of Havana tops most travelers’ lists. And while old Havana is a spectacular place, where else should you go in Cuba? Are there other good cities, or beaches, or nature spots?

I’m glad you asked! Cuba is one of the most interesting of the Caribbean islands, and there are so many cool places to visit in this island nation. Cuba is like nowhere else in the world, and there’s a surprising amount of diversity in the island.

Here you can make your way from colonial cities like Trinidad and Cienfuegos to gorgeous beaches like Playa Maria la Gorda and Playa Giron, as well as natural wonderlands like El Nicho and Viñales Valley.

I asked my travel blogging colleagues to share their favorite spots, and WOW. You are going to love them.

Also, if you’re American and thinking about visiting Cuba, YOU CAN! I did as an American in early 2020, and plenty of Americans visit on a regular basis. I wrote a complete guide on how to visit Cuba as an American and what you need to know before you go.

Havana boasts a rich mixture of history, art, architecture, politics, culture, and food. One of the best ways to enjoy a pleasant introduction to these facets of Cuban life is through a food tour while feasting on churros or sipping a mojito.

In Old Havana, visit a couple of other memorable works of José Ramón Villa Soberón, including the one of Ernest Hemingway at El Floridita. The famous cocktail bar is credited with introducing the world to the frozen daiquiri in the 1930s, a favourite drink of the author. Ordering a daiquiri isn’t mandatory, but it’s desirable.

Best things to do in Havana: Take a tour of Havana landmarks in one of the vintage cars. A popular stop is Parque John Lennon  in Vedado, where tourists cozy up to a bronze statue of the famous musician relaxing on an ornate park bench. Created by José Ramón Villa Soberón, the sculpture warrants its own security guard to safeguard the replica of the circular-rimmed glasses that were a recognizable signature of Lennon’s period of political activism.

How to get to Havana: Havana is the main hub of Cuba, and all flights and travel routes lead through Havana.

Where to stay in Havana: The best place to stay in Havana is at a casa particular , or guesthouse, where hosts may or may not live on the premises. It’s an opportunity to forge meaningful connections with Cuban residents. Enjoy home-cooked meals, receive recommendations on things to do and help with transportation and bookings at casa particulars in other regions.

In Havana, the Vedado neighbourhood is a good choice. Compared to Old Havana and the city center, there’s less traffic and more green spaces that translate into cleaner air. The neighbourhood is dotted with old mansions oozing loads of character, and services such as supermarkets, money-changing centres, and Wi-Fi zones.

Visit a restaurant in Vedado, and chances are it’s an establishment serving Cuban specialties and is one frequented by locals.

Viñales is a pretty, colourful town in the Pinar del Rio region in the west of Cuba, surrounded by the Sierra de los Organos mountains and the lush green farmland of the Viñales Valley. Its main attractions are all outdoors — hiking, cycling, horseback riding or even rock climbing in the steep-sided limestone hills — just pick your favorite outdoor adventure!

Best things to do in Viñales: One of the most popular things to do in Viñales is to take a horseback riding tour of the valley. These usually last about 3-5 hours and are a great way to enjoy the region’s stunning scenery of rolling hills studded with palm trees.

But if horses aren’t your thing, you might prefer to do a day hike to visit the tobacco farms for which Viñales is famous. Here you can meet local farmers and learn about how they produce Cuba’s most iconic export — cigars — and even get to try one yourself.

How to get to Viñales: Viñales is about a 2.5-hour drive from Havana, and the easiest way to get there is either by bus or private taxi. The best way to do this is to first take a taxi to the central coach and taxi station, and then haggle with the drivers there. You’ll get a much better price than if you try to book through your hotel, and you might even get to ride in one of  Cuba’s gorgeous classic cars .

Another option is to join a shared taxi (colectivo) from Havana.

Where to stay in Viñales: The best place to stay while in Viñales is in one of the private homestays known as casas particulares. These give you a much more authentic (and often nicer) experience of Cuba than staying in a hotel. Just turn up and look for the signs on people’s front doors or book through Airbnb.

Three kids walking up a street in Trinidad Cuba in front of a yellow building with green doors

Submitted by Trijit Mallick from  DogTravel Buff

With bright-colored buildings, pastel houses, and cobblestone streets, Trinidad is one of the best-preserved colonial towns in Cuba. It is a small town but packed with history, beautiful architecture, scenic beauty, and delicious local cuisines.

After a few hours in Trinidad, you’ll soon see why it’s one of the best places to visit in Cuba!

Best things to do in Trinidad: Plaza Mayor is the best place to start exploring the city. It is the main square where the Church of the Holy Trinity is located. The stunning pale yellow-colored church is a great spot for photography. Make sure to visit Brunet Palace, a large yellow building consisting of two floors. You will also find some other historical buildings and restaurants in this area. Sala Class is very popular in Trinidad. You can go for a group lesson for a unique experience.

If you are a beach person, Playa Ancon is a must-visit place for you. You can rent a bike or take a public bus that takes around 30 minutes to reach Playa Ancon. Enjoy the beautiful combination of blue waters, white sand beach, and palm trees.

There is no shortage of bars and restaurants in Trinidad. Restaurante San José is a solid option for people looking to taste authentic Cuban cuisine. The canchanchara is the original signature cocktail of Cuba and it’s very popular in this region.

How to get to Trinidad: Bus service is available from all major cities (like Havana, Viñales, and Varadero) to Trinidad and is the cheapest way to get to Trinidad. If budget is less of a concern, hire a shared or private taxi (colectivo) or rent a car for a more flexible journey. It takes around four hours to reach Trinidad from Havana by road.

Where to stay in Trinidad: You can stay at casas particulares which are basically private homestays like B&B. These private B&Bs offer air-conditioning and hot water at a very reasonable price.

A palm tree on a white sand beach with turquoise water in the background in Varadero Cuba

Submitted by Martha from May Cause Wanderlust

Cuba is teeming with culture, but it also has wonderful natural beauty and some stunning beaches — and the most spectacular beach is at Varadero, a peninsula in the north of Cuba.

Varadero beach  is 20 km of fine white sand, lapped by bright turquoise water and lined by lush green coconut trees. It really is special. By far the best thing to do here is to relax in the warmth of the Caribbean sun, letting the sound of the waves soothe you as you sip on fresh coconut milk.

Best things to do in Varadero: If you like to be active, there are things to do in Varadero like scuba diving, kayaking, fishing and golf. There’s also an ecological park with some ancient cave drawings.

You can even visit the former homes of the American millionaires and gangsters, who once made Varadero their playground, before the revolution. Al Capone’s old house is now a restaurant!

How to get to Varadero: Varadero has its own international airport, so many people fly straight in. If you’re driving from Havana, Varadero is about a 2.5-hour drive east of there, along the Via Blanca.

Where to stay in Varadero: Varadero has been one of Cuba’s major tourist resort areas since the 1990s, and there are plenty of 4-star and 5-star hotels, mainly in the middle and eastern end of the peninsula, including several Iberostar hotels.

However, if you prefer to travel independently and/or you’re on a budget, there are plenty of lower-cost guesthouses on the western end of the peninsula.

Sancti Spiritus

Submitted by Sarah Carter from Cuba’s Best

One of Cuba’s oldest cities, Sancti Spiritus is usually bypassed in favor of the more touristy Trinidad, but this lovely city is great for visiting if you’d like some time off the tourist trail.  Although it’s not so far off the beaten track that you can’t easily get here on the Viazul Bus (which is your best option for transport).

There are colonial buildings, lovely squares, a medieval bridge that wouldn’t look out of place in rural England, and some fabulous spots to just chill out.

Puente Yayabo, the bridge in question is worth the walk and is best viewed from the Taberna Yayabo while clutching a refreshing drink. To get there, walk down Calle Llano the most atmospheric street in Sancti Spiritus. You’ll find the center of life in Sancti Spiritus in Plaza Serafin Sánchez where people-watching is the main thing to do.

Best things to do in Sancti Spiritus: For something unique, go to the Casa de La Guayabera. The Guayabera is a style of shirt, with a collar and pockets, worn primarily by farmers, but made popular by Fidel Castro.

Cubans claim that the shirt was invented here and so, the free museum displays a collection of the shirts previously worn by the famous people and you’ll get to see local ladies making more shirts too. Sancti Spiritus has the look and feel of Trinidad without the jiniteros. Come here for a little slice of regular Cuban life!

How to get to Sancti Spiritus: Sancti Spiritus can easily be reached on the Viazul Bus.

Where to stay in Sancti Spiritus: Stay at the Real Colonial Hostal for a great location close to the main square and super friendly staff.

beautiful cuba tour

Submitted by Antoine and Marielle of Offbeat Escapades

Cayo Coco is one of Cuba’s most beautiful places, as well as one of the country’s more remote islands. Featuring turquoise waters and fine sands, it’s no wonder why Cayo Coco has starred in many movies and novels such as Hemingway’s Islands in the Stream and The Old Man and the Sea .

It is also a great place to go if you’re looking for a unique destination in Cuba that feels offbeat, isolated, and laidback.

Best things to do in Cayo Coco: Given Cayo Coco’s idyllic waters and landscapes, beaches are the main attraction and best thing to do on the island. The most well-known beach in Cayo Coco is Playa Los Flamencos. This stellar beach is over 5 kilometers long, facing the Atlantic Sea, and features pristine white sand.

If you’re looking for a quieter beach, you can also check out Playa Prohibida which is more suitable for hikers or those who want a more peaceful yet adventurous nature experience. Finally, Cayo Coco is also well-known for bird-watching activities.

How to get to Cayo Coco: Cayo Coco is connected to the mainland by a bridge so to get to the island, you can either drive, or if you prefer a more convenient option, you can arrive by airplane from one of the major airport hubs in the country.

Where to Stay in Cayo Coco: Once you arrive, you can stay in one of the island’s many luxurious resorts and hotels such as Melia Cayo Coco Hotel and Memories Caribe Beach Resort. These hotels offer a relaxing atmosphere with beachfront views.

Cienfuegos itself is much like other Cuban cities, with colonial architecture and an attractive main square.  In the evening, stroll down to Punta Gorda and enjoy the views of the sunset from the Malecón, or even better, from the terrace of the Palacio de Valle restaurant for 360-degree views.

Best things to do in Cienfuegos: You can visit El Castillo, a small fortress built to defend the city from pirates, but what really makes Cienfuegos worth adding to your  Cuba itinerary  is the wealth of things to do outside the city.

Laguna Guanaroca is a nature reserve where you can take a boat trip out to the lake to watch flamingos – a rare time to enjoy peace and tranquillity in Cuba!  There is also a  güira  orchard here, a fruit that is used to make maracas, as well as other species of birds and trees to admire.

The beautiful waterfalls at El Nicho are another must-visit, an hour and 15-minute taxi ride away from the centre of Cienfuegos.  Here you will find a series of natural pools and waterfalls for swimming and bathing – even better if you have a bottle of Havana Club chilling in the cool water.

How to get to Cienfuegos: Cienfuegos is on the road to Trinidad from Havana, about a 90-minute drive from Trinidad.  There are buses that pass through Cienfuegos from Havana and Trinidad, or you can hire a collectivo taxi from Trinidad which can work out cheaper than the bus if you club together with other travelers.

Where to stay in Cienfuegos: Stay at one of the casas particulares in Cienfuegos, such as Casa Vista al Mar, which has a swimming pool and a seafront terrace. Be sure to eat at least one meal at Doña Nora, an excellent restaurant serving great value local specialities like  ropa vieja .

El Nicho

Submitted by Paul Healey from Anywhere We Roam

Topes de Collantes is a nature reserve stretching across the Escambray Mountains in the center of Cuba, close to Cienfuegos. The reserve is made up of 5 smaller parks and one of the most impressive is  Parque El Nicho . Here palm trees clear intermittently to reveal canyon views and waterfalls drop into crystal clear natural swimming pools.

It’s a beautiful place to visit in Cuba to unwind in nature and enjoy scenic wild swimming.

Best things to do in El Nicho: A short hiking trail (1.5 kilometers) called El Reino de los Aguas includes the most scenic sections of El Nicho, including several waterfalls and lookout points. Surrounded by palm trees and framed by large rocks, this natural swimming spot at the base of the main waterfall is the perfect place to unwind after exploring the park.

There is a small fee to enter, however, at press time they are currently only accepting euros as payment. A tour guide is not necessary to visit the park, and you can easily stroll around on your own.

How to get to El Nicho: A popular way to get to El Nicho is to take a colectivo from Cienfuegos on the way through to Trinidad. The driver will look after your luggage in the car and wait for around two hours while you explore the park. Your host or hotel in Cienfuegos will be able to arrange transportation.

Where to stay in El Nicho: It’s best to stay in the nearby city of Cienfuegos and use it as a base for visiting El Nicho.

Playa Giron

Submitted by Raluca of Travel With A Spin

Playa Giron lies in the Bay of Pigs , around three hours away from Havana or Varadero by Viazul or a shared taxi. The region is pretty remote by Cuban standards.

But if you love white sand and clear turquoise waters with few tourists and no hotels, Playa Giron and Playa de los Cocos are perfect options for sunbathing and a quick swim.

Best things to do in Playa Giron: Besides sun and water, here one can enjoy snorkeling among fish and coral reefs. The best places to do so are Caleta Buena, Cueva dos Peces and Punta Perdiz.

While there’s a bus connecting these beaches, a popular option is to rent a bike and ride to one of them. The road is mostly flat and there aren’t many cars, making it an easy ride. Besides, the landscape is nice and you can stop wherever you want to admire it, talk to the fishermen or take some nice photos.

At Museo Girón you can learn everything about the historical conflict between Castro and the United States that led to the famous embargo. A little farther, Zapata Swamp is a tentative UNESCO World Heritage Site mostly unknown to foreigners. This incredible place boasts diverse landscapes, including a lagoon, Fidel’s crocodile farm, and underwater shipwrecks.

How to get to Playa Giron: Playa Giron can be accessed via the Viazul bus or a shared taxi. It’s located about a three-hour drive from Havana and Varadero.

Where to stay in Playa Giron: Playa Giron is a small village and although there’s a hotel, this is a great place for a more authentic experience. Most of the locals rent their spare rooms to tourists.

A great option is Hostal Sur Caribe, close to the center of the village. The owner is knowledgeable, prepares delicious breakfasts and can help guests rent bicycles.

Located on the eastern end of Cuba, Baracoa is one of Cuba’s oldest and most historic cities. A perfect combination of history, culture, and natural beauty, this small town is a great addition to any Cuba itinerary.

In addition to having a charming historic center — one of Cuba’s most beautiful and laidback — Baracoa also has a number of beautiful white sand beaches to enjoy. Playa Maguana, just a 30-minute drive outside of Baracoa, is also a local favorite for its unspoiled beach and white sand.

Best things to do in Baracoa: If you’re a nature lover and looking to appreciate Cuba’s natural beauty beyond the beaches head to El Yunque to discover some of the  best hiking in Cuba .

El Yunque — or “the anvil” in Spanish because of its distinct flat top shape — is one of the most unique mountains in the Caribbean, and was detailed in Christopher Columbus’s journals about his arrival in Cuba. Here you’ll find lush tropical forests and waterfalls, perfect for swimming in after the three-hour hike to the mountaintop.

How to get to Baracoa: Baracoa was once only accessible by sea until the creation of a highway after the Cuban Revolution in 1959, but today Baracoa is easily accessible via a two-hour drive from nearby Santiago de Cuba. You can also find direct flights from Havana into the small airport in Baracoa.

Where to stay in Baracoa: Stay at one of the many casas particulares for the best, most local experience at every price point.

Cayo Levisa

Submitted by Alex Tiffany of Just Go Exploring

If you’re looking for a slice of paradise, minus the other tourists, be sure to include Cayo Levisa in your Cuba itinerary .

This beautiful little cay off the coast of Pinar del Rio province in western Cuba is a picture-perfect Caribbean island, straight out of a postcard.  Most of the north shore is one long beach, with soft white sand and perfectly clear, clean turquoise water. On the south side you’ll find thick mangrove swamp teeming with birds and marine life.

The best thing about Cayo Levisa is how undeveloped it is. There is only one (small) hotel on the island, offering a few simple bungalow-style rooms. Other than that, the island is mostly natural and untouched.

Best things to do in Cayo Levisa: You can walk the length of Cayo Levisa and see very few people. Once you get away from the hotel, you basically have the whole place to yourself. Swim in the sea, sip a coconut in the shade, or just laze the day away in a hammock.  Enjoy your own (almost) private island.

Several excellent diving spots are accessible from the north shore, with amazing visibility and loads of tropical fish and coral reefs. You can arrange diving trips from the hotel reception. Alternatively, the snorkeling is also pretty good just off the beach.

How to get to Cayo Levisa: To get to Cayo Levisa, you need to take a ferry from the village of Palma Rubia. The ferry runs twice a day, going out to the island at 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM, returning visitors to the mainland at 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

Palma Rubia itself is an easy 45-minute drive from Viñales. If you don’t have your own transport, either organize a tour from Viñales or take a taxi (but be sure to arrange a return pickup as you might struggle to flag a cab in Palma Rubia – there’s not much there).

Most people visit the island as part of a day trip from Viñales.  However, if you have time, I recommend you stay here for at least a couple of nights.  Cayo Levisa is even more magical and unspoiled once the day-trippers have left.

Where to stay in Cayo Levisa: There is only one (small) hotel on the island, offering a few simple bungalow-style rooms.

An antique pink convertible on a cuba street in Matanzas

Contributed by Allison of Eternal Arrival

Matanzas is a cultural hub in Cuba, with lively streets and bustling plazas often bursting with live music. It’s a wonderful place to visit if you want to travel a little off the beaten path when  preparing for your Cuba trip .

Located just a 55-mile drive from Havana, Matanzas makes a great day trip or is a good stop along the route between Havana and the resort city of Varadero, with its stunning beaches.

Best things to do in Matanzas: Matanzas is also home to several museums, including the Junco Palace Museum (which focuses on regional history), the Museo de Artes de Matanzas, as well as the Museo Farmaceutico, a unique pharmacy museum.

Be sure to check out the Castillo de San Severino, one of the largest fortresses in the Caribbean, which dates back to 1734. Don’t miss the Museum of the Slave Route located inside, which tells the story of the enslaved Africans who built the fortress.

Check out the areas around Plaza de la Vigia and Plaza de la Libertad to see street life in Cuba at its finest!

How to get to Matanzas: As with most travel in Cuba, arranging a private taxi is typically the most straightforward way to get between destinations, though it’s the most expensive. You can also take a taxi colectivo from Havana’s Central Park, or the Viazul bus. Depending on your transit mode, it’ll take between 1.5 and 2.5 hours between Havana and Matanzas.

Where to stay in Matanzas: As with most Cuban destinations, casa particulares are the way to go with accommodation. While I often relied on word-of-mouth referrals when choosing where to stay (Cubans network like no other!), you can also find cute accommodations on Airbnb, like this private room at  Casa Manzaneda .

Playa Larga

Submitted by Gemma from Two Scots Abroad

Playa Larga in Cuba is a historically significant area located in the Bay of Pigs, known for the failed US invasion in 1961. Today, one of the best reasons to visit the Bay of Pigs in Cuba is to explore underwater via diving or snorkeling.

Best things to do in Playa Larga: As with most activities in Cuba, you can organize your dive the day before, and sometimes this is the only option. Aim to find a casa around the small town of Caleton or book a resort at Playa Larga or Girón, then ask your host or taxi collectivo driver to set up a session with a local dive school such as The Octopus Club.

A driver will pick you and the other divers up from casas and resorts and drop you off at the dive center where you will be kitted out with equipment. Next, you will hop back on the bus to the dive site, a quiet beach with stretches of calm waters.

After a quick introduction and dive instructions in Spanish with hand actions to translate, it is time to walk into the water. Yes, you physically walk into this dive site, which keeps costs down as there is no need for a boat.

Under the water, you will see lots of colorful fish and reefs, a truly magical and very affordable diving experience.

As always, if you don’t want to dive, you can snorkel instead!

How to get to Playa Larga: To get to the Playa Larga area, you can attempt the Viazul bus, but not all drivers will stop. To secure transport, book a taxi collectivo from  Havana , Viñales or Trinidad, which will be pricier but offers a guarantee.

Where to stay in Playa Larga: For accommodation, consider a casa particular in Caleton or Playa Larga, which you can ask your taxi to find for you or book via Airbnb before you arrive.

Playa Maria la Gorda

Submitted by Džangir Kolar from Dr Jam Travels

Playa Maria la Gorda is a beautiful Cuban beach located in the western province of Pinar del Rio on Guanahacabibes Peninsula on the far west point of the main island.  When you get to this destination you will find yourself in a typical Caribbean paradise with palm trees, white sands, and turquoise clear water.

As this is a quintessential Cuban beach, Playa Maria la Gorda features activities like swimming, sunbathing, and partying with cheap rum drinks during the night.

Best things to do in Playa Maria la Gorda: The waters off Playa Maria la Gorda are full of marine life, so this place is perfect for snorkeling or diving. You can just swim off the coast or take a tour with the dive center. You can hire a guide and explore the area, maybe even see crocodiles or turtles nesting.

How to get to Playa Maria la Gorda: You will be arriving probably from the capital of the region Pinar del Rio in the east. With a car, it will take you around 2.5 hours. The bus will take an hour more. Coming from Viñales will take an extra half hour.

Where to stay in Playa Maria la Gorda: The only accommodation option here is Hotel Maria la Gorda.

Santa Clara

Submitted by Dan from Layer Culture

When looking for the best places to visit in Cuba you are spoiled for choice — but one city that captivates many travelers is Santa Clara. Here there are two large monuments and a special museum commemorating Che Guevara, a must-see for people interested in Cuban history.

Best things to do in Santa Clara: Whilst exploring Santa Clara you can learn all about Che Guevara via the Mausoleum, a gigantic marble-made monument that was originally put up in 1988. The landmark, which is open year-round also has a small museum open 8:30 AM until 12:30 PM, but be aware that visitors are prohibited from carrying any personal items inside.

Other popular  things to do in Santa Clara  include hiking up Loma del Caprio and visiting Teatro la Caridad, one of the last colonial theaters that remain in Cuba. You also have Leoncio Vidal Park, which is a fantastic spot to sit and enjoy the Cuban lifestyle in the evenings. It’s not unusual to see locals dancing around here while enjoying rum cocktails.

How to get to Santa Clara: You can arrive to Santa Clara directly from Havana using the Viazul bus service which takes around 3-4 hours.

Where to stay in Santa Clara:  By booking a stay at Hostal Vista al Mejunje you’ll feel right at home and the huge breakfast spread they put out in the mornings will leave your eyes wide open.

Submitted by Claudia Tavani from My Adventures Across The World

Lesser visited compared to many other places in Cuba,  Camaguey  can be puzzling for those who choose to visit. While it’s somewhat less touristy compared to Havana or Trinidad, Cuba’s third-largest city (located exactly at the center of the island) is actually packed with touts — locally known as jineteros — who will hardly leave a traveler alone.

That should not detract you from its beauty — in fact, the historic center of Camaguey is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This was built in a medina style to keep pirates at bay. It means getting lost in Camaguey is almost a given; but on the other hand this will allow you to discover its many corners and hidden gems.

Best things to do in Camaguey: The city is packed with beautiful churches and squares. The ones you should not miss include the Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral, the 1748 church of Nuestra Señora de la Merced.

Parque Ignatio Agramonte is the prettiest square in town, so make sure not to miss that either — there’s also a museum by the same name which has an interesting display of antique furniture and an exhibit of 19th and 20th century Cuban art.

How to get to Camaguey: You can get to Camagüey by Viazul bus from Havana and Santiago — it’s the line that connects the two cities and goes on to Trinidad and Cienfuegos. The trip from Havana takes about 10 hours. It’s 6.5 hours from Santiago and five hours from Trinidad.

Where to stay in Camaguey: The best place to stay in Camagüey is the Casa de Caridad, a casa particular in Oscar Primelles 310A between Bartolomé Masò and Padre Olallo. It’s a large colonial house with antique furniture and a beautiful garden at the back.

Santiago de Cuba

Submitted by Jordan from  Hamburg and Beyond

The second-largest city in Cuba after Havana, Santiago de Cuba is bursting with bright colors and charming architecture . Santiago de Cuba played an important role in the Cuban Revolution, with the revolution beginning at the Moncada Barracks in the city in 1953 and ending with Fidel Castro declaring victory on the balcony of Santiago de Cuba’s city hall in 1959.

Best things to do in Santiago de Cuba: Besides roaming the colorful streets of Santiago de Cuba, center yourself around Céspedes Park – the main square of the city.

Make sure to visit the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption. First constructed in 1514, this is considered a minor basilica by the Holy See and became a national monument in 1958.

Less than a block away from this cathedral are two great places to get drinks: the porch area of Hotel Casa Granda and Casa de La Trova. The former offers a perfect people-watching location and is beautifully designed, while the latter offers a more authentic experience with live music.

How to get to Santiago de Cuba: It’s easy to reach Santiago de Cuba via plane by flying into Antonio Maceo International Airport. As the city is on the opposite side of Cuba from Havana, driving to/from Santiago de Cuba is a bit more treacherous!  The city’s airport has connections to Havana as well as other nearby islands and Paris, France.

Where to stay in Santiago de Cuba: Hotel Casa Granda is also the ideal place to stay due to its proximity to everything in the city and high-class amenities.

Kate- first off, these collaborative posts are just so fabulous (Paris streets, cenotes). It stands to reason that you are only 1 person and have time limitations. It’s just a really nice method to draw on colleagues wisdom, and at the same time, have you organize the material and proofread it so it matches your style and is up to snuff, quality wise.

Cuba has been one of my most beloved trips. It was a land so full of contradictions and magic, but one has to be open to it. I guess that is true of anywhere, but it seemed like there were more layers that needed unwrapping in Cuba.

Havana had its appeal, but the hustling wore on me and honestly, a couple days was enough for me, at least in one chunk.

A place that most people skip over, or stop by for an hour en route to Vinales (to see the orchid gardens) is Soroa. I love stopping in rural areas in the developing world. The people do not hustle tourists. Their pace of life is slow and they are friendly. I had some magical experiences there, just meeting locals on top of mountains (making jewelry with local seeds), horseback riding and befriending the guide for other hangouts, and eating dinner in a locals’ home in their stunning garden.

Vinales was special as well, although more touristy – although it’s covered in this blog post and elsewhere.

Cayo Levisa was covered, although may I suggest staying in the town of Palma Rubia and taking the boat to the island for the day, or a couple of days. It’s not much of a town. I stayed in a casa particular, where nobody spoke a word of English. I managed to get by with the daughter-in-law translating between fast Spanish (that the father in law spoke) to slow Spanish (that I could understand). They’d ask what I wanted to eat, and then we’d go outside and get it. As in, pick mangoes, kill a chicken, climb a coconut tree and pour their own rum and honey in it, have their fisherman friend from down the road bring shrimp to us. I was supposed to spend my last 2 days in Havana, but ended up staying here that extra time, once I discovered it was easy to get around with a private ride (a cab that was arranged at my casa particular).

Getting to these smaller towns was truly a rural slice of Cuba that most travelers will bypass if they stick with Havana or resort towns. Don’t make that mistake!

Aww Sherry, I’m so glad you’re enjoying the collab posts! They really help fill out some areas where I’m missing the knowledge.

Agree that a few days in Havana is more than enough. Especially Old Havana. But I loved the countryside so much. And thanks for the recommendations!

Hi Kate – this is a great list! I’ve visited most of the places you mentioned during my trip to Cuba a couple of years ago. I particularly liked Viñales and Baracoa. The latter totally blew me away as the natural surroundings seemed so removed from most of the rest of the island, somewhat wilder and more untamed than the rest of the island.

I didn’t get to any of the Cayos you mentioned but they sound amazing as well. I’ll check them out during my next visit. A place I really enjoyed was the Sierra Maestra Mountain Range, including a hike up Pico Turquino, the island’s highest peak. If you haven’t been there, I can really recommend exploring the area. The town of Bayamo is a good base for that and a nice place to visit in its own right.

Anyways, thanks for the cool article! Reinhard

Awesome! Thanks for the recommendations, Reinhard.
