Founded in 1930 by Mahakavi Vallathol Narayana Menon and Manakkulam Mukunda Raja, it is one of the most revered places for the traditional art forms of Kerala. This temple of arts has preserved and propagated Kathakali, the classical dance of Kerala. Many of the internationally renowned artistes of Kerala and India have been trained here. The Koothambalam, the traditional dance theatre at Kalamandalam is the only one in the State which is built outside a temple complex. Constructed according to vikrushtra madhya, one of the three natya grihas specified in sage Bharatha's Natyasasthra, the theatre is 14.62 meter long and 7.31 meter wide. This unique institute has been involved in giving training in Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Kootiyattam, Panchavadyam and Thullal.

Vadakkumnathan Temple, one of the oldest temples in Kerala is believed to have been built by Parasurama who is said to have reclaimed Kerala from the Sea. This temple is one of the largest temple in Kerala and is famous for its architectural beauty. The main deity is Lord Siva and is represented by a magnificent Mahalingam.

Vadakkumnathan temple is a classical example of the Kerala style architecture. This temple houses many decorative murals and art pieces. Vadakkumnathan temple is most famous for the Pooram festivals celebrated annually during April-May. The fireworks at the Pooram are magnificent. During the Pooram temple is crowded with locals and tourists. Non Hindus are not allowed entry into the temple.

2. Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu Temple

Worship at Vadakkumnathan temple is complete only with a visit to both Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu temple. In Thiruvambady the deity is Siva’s son Subramanian and also there is a separate shrine of Ganapathy at the back. In Paramekkavu the deity is Devi Parvathi. The idol of Parvathi faces her lord.

3. Thrissur Pooram

Thrissur Pooram is called as the ‘pooram of all poorams’. Thrissur Pooram has a special charm in Kerala. This colourful festival is celebrated at Vadakkumnathan temple in April. Situated in a hillock at the centre of the city The temple is crowded with thousands of devotees.

Sakthan Thampuran, the ruler of Kochi is the founder of this festival and is called as Peoples festival. The Pooram is magnificent with elephant Procession, fireworks and umbrella showing competition. The main venue of the pooram festival is the Thekkinkadu Maidanam.

During Pooram festival Thrissur, popularly known as the temple town become a place of colour, music and mirth and will elate your soul. The Pooram programmes lasting about 36 hours begins with the ezhunellippu and ends with spectacular fireworks.

4. Thrissur Archaeological Museum

This museum was once the summer palace of the Kollengode rajas and then its converted to a museum. This archaeological museum started as a picture gallery in the year 1938. There are copies of mural paintings from Mattancherry Palace and some temples in Kochi.

Later in the year 1948 an archaeological gallery was added along with the picture gallery to exhibit the archaeological findings and excavated material of the Department of Archaeology. These shifted to new building in 1975 and named as Archaeological Museum.

5. Sakthan Thampuran Palace

Sakthan Thampuran Palace also known as Palace Thoppu is a classic example of the simple lifestyle of Kerala rulers. The garden in the palace houses the tombs of three noble including that of Sakthan Thampuran. The gardens are maintained well with a Sarpakavu (a snake shrine), a tank and a Shiva temple. The palace is also beautiful with so many halls including a musical hall.

6. Thrissur Zoo

Thrissur Zoo located at distance of 2 km spreads over an area of thirteen acres. This is an ideal haunt for animal lovers. One can see tigers, camels, sweet mithun hippos, Pink flamingos, lion tailed macaque, sloth bear, and so many species of birds.

The snake park has an impressive collection of reptiles. The endangered species like Asiatic Lion is found in Thrissur zoo. Inside the Zoo is the Natural History Museum.

Thrissur Pooram The festival has been celebrated since the eighteenth century and is one of the most vibrant festivals that takes place every year during the months of April - May.

Koodiyattum It is an elaborate 36-hour long festival that takes place across various temples of Thrissur. The preparations for the festival begin one week prior -with the hosting of flags of the temples that are going to be a part of the event. The parade of deities takes place at Vadukunathan Temple while the main event starts at 6 AM at Paramekkavu Temple. Uthralikavu Pooram The festival takes place annually in February and March. Elephant procession, Kuthira Vela, Panchavadyam, Melam, and Vedikettu are the major attractions of this week-long festival that is celebrated in Sri Rudhiramahakalikav Temple.

Guruvayur Uthsavam Spread over ten days, Guruvayur Uthsavam is a festival that is celebrated in the Guruvayur Temple. The festival opens up with an elephant race and presents its viewers with a picture of the cultural, religious, and historical overview of the city through enticing performances presented by artists

Arattupuzha Pooram This is another prime religious festival that takes place some 15kms away from the city, at Arattupuzha Temple, which is home to Lord Ayappa. It is a seven-day long festival that features the largest procession of elephants, and more than two hundred percussion artists perform in the temple.

Peruvanam Pooram This festival offers visitors an insight into the history, culture, and religion of the city of Thissur. Major highlights include the elephant procession and orchestra display.

Ollur Pally Perunnal This is a Christian festival held at one of the oldest churches in Kerala, called St. Anthony’s Forance Church. It takes place on the 23rd and 24th of October every year and is also known as the Feast of Saint Raphael. It is a colourful festival with the main highlights being umbrellas, vala procession, orchestra, chariots, and fireworks.

Puli Kali Onam is a major festival that is celebrated with extravagance throughout the state of Kerala. Being the cultural capital of the state, Thrissur goes one step beyond to offer another segment, Puli Kali, which is a traditional local art form. The performers dress up like tigers with face masks and tiger stripes all over their bodies. The art form is performed on the fourth day of Onam in different parts of the city. During the dance, one person acts as a hunter while the other chases Puli Kali. The art form adds a different essence to the festival and makes the festival grander for the onlookers.

Athirappilly Water Falls

Called as “niagra of india” as you walk down the stone slabs that lead to the base of the athirappilly waterfalls, a mysterious serenity overcomes you. it is kerala's most famous and largest waterfall at over 80 ft high. when you land in athirapally, you are greeted with the sight of charming green sholayar peaks peering over the rushing gush of the falls. standing against the backdrop of a rustling jungle foliage, there is a pool above the falls where you can relax and unwind. to get a view of the waterfall, one needs to get down from the mountain for about 100 meters..

Chalakudy River

Cheraman Juma Mosque

Cheraman Juma Masjid, located in Kodungallur, in Kerala’s Thrissur district is believed to be the first mosque in India and is one of the oldest in the world. Our Lady of Dolours Basilica

The first catholic church, in the name, our lady of dolours, was founded in the year 1814. the ‘new church’, now popularly known as ‘puthenpally’, was blessed on 10th october 1925 by bishop mar francis vazhappilly. by the persistent and never-dying enthusiasm, the catholic pioneers completed the construction of the church as the most beautiful and decidedly the biggest church in india and the second biggest in asia. mar francis vazhappilly, the then bishop of trichur, the visionary and the founder of this magnificent church, consecrated it on 24th november 1940. the historic reception awarded to his holiness, pope john paul ii, on 7th feb 1986 in the environs of this parish is a memorable event. his eminence cardinal, lourduswamy inaugurated the perpetual adoration centre on 23 rd august 1987 as a memorial of the centenary celebrations of the eparchy of trichur. .

Punnathur Kotta

Punnathur kotta, is a fine example why kerala is called the “land of elephants”. sprawling over 11.5 acres and surrounded by green foliage, it is a very beautiful place. its prime attractions are the jumbo elephants; around 60 of them are kept and taken care of here which is approximately 3 km from the famous guruvayur temple and is used to train elephants to participate in major processions and daily temple rituals. several tourists visit this destination on their way back from guruvayur temple. one can fed bananas to these elephants and click pictures with some of the popular elephants in the sanctuary..

Koodalmanikyam is the malayalam translation of the sanskrit word sangameswara. there is, however, another folklore about the name. one day the idol was found to give out uncommon brightness from its forehead. beaing unable to identify the source of the brightness, some brought a quartz (manikyam) in the possession of raja of kayamkulam for comparison. as they were comparing the brightness of the two, it is said the stone brought from kayamkulam mysteriously slipped from the hand and merged with the one on the idol. the merging of the two manikyams led to the name 'koodalmanikyam'. similar brightness is reported to have appeared on the idol once again, much later in 1907..

Vadakkunnathan Temple

Vadakkunnathan Temple is seated atop a hillock in the middle of the city. It is a marvelous symbol of the ancient architectural caliber of Kerala . The temple is surrounded by massive columns on all sides along with a theatre for orchestrating traditional art forms. Vadakkunnathan Temple is devoted to Lord Shiva, housing a colossal Shiva Linga. This provides the faithful with an apt holistic destination.

Our Lady of Dolours Basilica

Our Lady of Dolours marks the birth of Christianity in the state of Kerala . It was the first Christian church to spring up in this cultural center. The church is well-known for its prehistoric Gothic construction. The walls of the church are adorned with scenes from the Bible and effigies of Saints. Famously, the church houses as many as eleven holy altars. The central altar is graced by five other altars on each of its flanks. Devotees throng this church in hope that their petitions be answered by the almighty.

Chimmony Dam and Wildlife Sanctuary

The Chimmony Dam was built completely in 1996. The dam stretches across the width of the Chimoni River. The region is silent and sans crowds most of the time. Tourists can rest and enjoy the delightful view that the dam has to offer. Nestled amidst the impenetrable Chimmony forests lies the Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary breeds some unique species of flora and fauna. Adventurers prefer trekking through the tricky forest route to fulfill their thrilling needs. Bamboo rafting is also carried out in the region.

Cheraman Juma Masjid

Another religious feather in the diverse cultural cap of Thrissur is the Cheraman Juma Masjid. This mosque outlines the entrance of Islamic religion into the Indian Subcontinent centuries ago. Indian Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi recently gifted a replica of this mosque to Saudi King Salman, highlighting its commercial as well as religious importance. Cheraman Juma Masjid symbolises Kerala ’s acceptance of foreign ideas, religions, and people.

Shakthan Thampuran Palace

Located about 2 km away from the Thrissur Railway Station, Shakthan Thampuran Palace forms a historic remnant of the Perumpadappu Swaroopam regime. The palace is a historian’s paradise, consisting of a perfect blend of Kerala and Dutch structures. The Shakthan Thampuran Palace also harbors an intricate museum with some engrossing exhibition rooms. These galleries have various ancient bronze and granite statues on display. The main attraction of the museum is the Numismatics exhibition room, which displays ancient coins used by various dynasties over time.

Triprayar Sri Rama Temple

Triprayar Sri Rama Temple is located about 22 km eastward from central part of Thrissur. This structural marvel consists of a circular sanctum with pointed roofs made out of copper. Several sculptures and depictions adorn the walls of the temple, representing occurrences from the Ramayana. Lord Rama is the principal deity of the temple. Religious folklore suggests that the idol of Lord Rama was found by local fishermen in the ocean, which was later inducted into this temple. The brilliant architecture of the Triprayar temple and the peaceful surrounding backwaters provide a perfect setup for tourists.

Archaeological Museum, Thrissur

The Archaeological Museum in Thrissur hosts exceptional artefacts from a forgotten era. Scholars and history enthusiasts will find solace in the company of these interesting specimens of ancient tradition. They get to witness age-old practices such as writings on palm leaves. Prototypes of prehistoric temples and full-size representations of eminent personalities grace the museum. The museum portrays kings and martyrs who exercised their rule over Kerala throughout the centuries, adding to its historic importance.

Vilangankunnu

Seated at the apex of the Vilangan Hills, Vilangankunnu is a spectacular picnic destination for tourists. It provides visitors with a scintillating overview of the beautiful city of Thrissur. Sunset and sunrise are the best times of the day to visit this hillock and be treated to stunning scenery. The hills provide trekkers and adventurers with an exciting climb. Who wouldn’t want to visit a venue studded with mangroves, offering a terrific bird’s eye view of the entire town.

Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple

Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple is one of the most revered, most ancient temples of India . Located about 26 km from the town of Thrissur, Guruvayur is dedicated to an idol of Lord Shri Krishna that flew itself thousands of miles from Gokul to down south after Shri Krishna’s parents passed away. The temple is very well built, with scared artefacts, carvings and fine handiwork in its architecture. The darshan here is open from 3:00 am to 1:30 pm, and then again from 4:30 pm to 9:15 pm.

Athirappilly Waterfalls

Athirappilly Waterfalls is 57 km’s drive away from Thrissur and perfect for a small picnic with your loved ones. The waterfall is 330 ft wide and 80 ft high, falling into a heavenly river down below. Athirappilly is the largest in all of Kerala . The Chalakudy River is fed by these falls and continues to flow with all her might. Many even refer to Athirappilly as the Indian Niagara.

Cheppara is a gorgeous viewpoint that doesn’t fall on most tourists programs. It is a secluded spot, about 17 km away from Thrissur. The word ‘para’ from its etymology means a hill, describing it perfectly as it is on top of a small hill. Photographers and wanderers are found scattered here, enjoying and clicking away at the captivating views, sunsets and sunrises.

Chettuva Backwater

When in Thirssur, drive down to Chettuva Backwater, about 30 km away. Of course Kerala is a synonym for backwaters, but Thrissur just takes it a step forward! The Chettuva Backwater extends from Enamakkal Lake all the way to the Arabian Sea, connecting two different natures of water. The mangrove cover, scattered houseboats and migratory birds making nests — that’s the kind of beauty you are going to experience here.

Punnathur Kotta

Punnathur Kotta is an elephant sanctuary where nowadays captured elephants are rehabilitated. The sanctuary was commissioned by an erstwhile king of the region for his love for these animals. Today, the place boasts 59 elephants, that are kept happy and trained to participate in festivals. Elephant riders or mahouts are also given special trainings here. You can visit this place at any time of the year, then go explore the Shiva-Bhagwati temple nearby. Punnathur Kotta is around 29 km from Thrissur.

Charpa Falls

Also located on the mighty Chalakudy River, the Charpa Falls along with Vazhachal and Athirappilly Falls make for a coveted tourist destination. You can make a day of circuiting all the waterfalls of the area and make a pitstop at Charpa. Monsoons are the best here, as the milk froth of the flowing water spills out of the banks of the river as rain pounds its surface. It is located 61 km away from Thrissur.

Chavakkad Beach

What is a trip to Kerala without some beach galore? The Chavakkad Beach is best for couples, honeymooners, and those groups who want to set up a picnic by the shore. The sand is glittering golden, the water nice and sparkling. Winter sun is the best kind of sun to sit under here, so make sure to visit on a cooler day. What’s unique about this beach is that it is a spot where the river and sea meet. Hence many call it an estuary too.

Paramekkavu Bhagavathy Temple

Visit Paramekkavu Bhagavathy Temple in Thrissur, not only for its stately architecture but also for the festivals celebrated here. The temple of Bhagvathy or Vaishnavi Devi is known for its ancientness (it is a thousand years old). One of the most famous festivals here is Thrissur Pooram, when a parade of 15 gloriously decked elephants walks down to Vadakkumnathan temple.

Thrissur Zoo and State Museum

When in Thrissur with family and kids, do not miss Thrissur Zoo and State Museum. Just a 2 km ride from the centre of Thrissur, this place is perfect for an idle day. Animal gazing, spotting vivid flora and varied fauna, exploring the museum and fooling around at the foodcourts… that’s the itinerary for you in a nutshell.

Vazhachal Falls

Pack a basket of finger foods and cool drinks, stow it into your car and drive down to Vazhachal Falls. Located only 5 km from the famous Athirappilly Falls, these flow westerly on the Chalakudy River and have a unique thick milky texture to them. Also, you will find a number of gardens, waterparks and other delightful places nearby to visit. Especially during monsoon. All in all, Vazhachal Falls are 32 km from Thrissur.

Kerala Kalamandalam

Art enthusiasts and those who enjoy discovering new culture while travelling, the Kerala Kalamandalam is a must visit when in Thrissur. It is a university of culture and art, as well as a museum of sorts that displays various artefacts and stories of ancient culture from the region. There is an institution that teaches the young as well as promotes the 3 main art forms of Kerala — Mohiniyattam, Kudiyattam and Kathakali.
