The exterior of this church features an Indo-European facade with pink spires. The Centenary of this church was celebrated during the historic visit of Pope John Paul II to Thrissur in 1986. The original name of this place was Thrissivaperoor which was named after Lord Siva. Thrissur is home for many cultural, artistic and academic institutions. Perumpadappu Swaroopam, Zamorins of Calicut, Invasion of Portuguese and eventually the British played a major role in the history of Thrissur.

1. Vadakkumnathan Temple

Vadakkumnathan Temple, one of the oldest temples in Kerala is believed to have been built by Parasurama who is said to have reclaimed Kerala from the Sea. This temple is one of the largest temple in Kerala and is famous for its architectural beauty. The main deity is Lord Siva and is represented by a magnificent Mahalingam.

Vadakkumnathan temple is a classical example of the Kerala style architecture. This temple houses many decorative murals and art pieces. Vadakkumnathan temple is most famous for the Pooram festivals celebrated annually during April-May. The fireworks at the Pooram are magnificent. During the Pooram temple is crowded with locals and tourists. Non Hindus are not allowed entry into the temple.

2. Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu Temple

Worship at Vadakkumnathan temple is complete only with a visit to both Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu temple. In Thiruvambady the deity is Siva’s son Subramanian and also there is a separate shrine of Ganapathy at the back. In Paramekkavu the deity is Devi Parvathi. The idol of Parvathi faces her lord.

3. Thrissur Pooram

Thrissur Pooram is called as the ‘pooram of all poorams’. Thrissur Pooram has a special charm in Kerala. This colourful festival is celebrated at Vadakkumnathan temple in April. Situated in a hillock at the centre of the city The temple is crowded with thousands of devotees.

Sakthan Thampuran, the ruler of Kochi is the founder of this festival and is called as Peoples festival. The Pooram is magnificent with elephant Procession, fireworks and umbrella showing competition. The main venue of the pooram festival is the Thekkinkadu Maidanam.

During Pooram festival Thrissur, popularly known as the temple town become a place of colour, music and mirth and will elate your soul. The Pooram programmes lasting about 36 hours begins with the ezhunellippu and ends with spectacular fireworks.

4. Thrissur Archaeological Museum

This museum was once the summer palace of the Kollengode rajas and then its converted to a museum. This archaeological museum started as a picture gallery in the year 1938. There are copies of mural paintings from Mattancherry Palace and some temples in Kochi.

Later in the year 1948 an archaeological gallery was added along with the picture gallery to exhibit the archaeological findings and excavated material of the Department of Archaeology. These shifted to new building in 1975 and named as Archaeological Museum.

5. Sakthan Thampuran Palace

Sakthan Thampuran Palace also known as Palace Thoppu is a classic example of the simple lifestyle of Kerala rulers. The garden in the palace houses the tombs of three noble including that of Sakthan Thampuran. The gardens are maintained well with a Sarpakavu (a snake shrine), a tank and a Shiva temple. The palace is also beautiful with so many halls including a musical hall.

6. Thrissur Zoo

Thrissur Zoo located at distance of 2 km spreads over an area of thirteen acres. This is an ideal haunt for animal lovers. One can see tigers, camels, sweet mithun hippos, Pink flamingos, lion tailed macaque, sloth bear, and so many species of birds.

The snake park has an impressive collection of reptiles. The endangered species like Asiatic Lion is found in Thrissur zoo. Inside the Zoo is the Natural History Museum.

Shopping in Thrissur

The Temple city is also a well known industrial and shopping centre. The city is famous for traditional and design gold ornaments. In Thrissur shopping can be enjoyed at both shopping complexes and shops spread all over the city.

There are some shops in Thrissur which are famous for traditional handicraft items, books and handloom products. You can shop stone carvings, Kathakali mask, cane furniture, household items, bell ware, shell ware, ivory boats, grass mats, fragrant vetiver bath brushes etc.

FESTIVALS AND EVENTS

Thrissur Pooram The festival has been celebrated since the eighteenth century and is one of the most vibrant festivals that takes place every year during the months of April - May.

Koodiyattum It is an elaborate 36-hour long festival that takes place across various temples of Thrissur. The preparations for the festival begin one week prior -with the hosting of flags of the temples that are going to be a part of the event. On the first morning, the festival opens up with mesmerizing fireworks and music which sets the tone in place. The parade of deities takes place at Vadukunathan Temple while the main event starts at 6 AM at Paramekkavu Temple. Like other festivals of Thrissur, procession of elephants is again a major highlight for tourists.

Uthralikavu Pooram The festival takes place annually in February and March. Elephant procession, Kuthira Vela, Panchavadyam, Melam, and Vedikettu are the major attractions of this week-long festival that is celebrated in Sri Rudhiramahakalikav Temple.

Guruvayur Uthsavam Spread over ten days, Guruvayur Uthsavam is a festival that is celebrated in the Guruvayur Temple. The festival opens up with an elephant race and presents its viewers with a picture of the cultural, religious, and historical overview of the city through enticing performances presented by artists

Arattupuzha Pooram This is another prime religious festival that takes place some 15kms away from the city, at Arattupuzha Temple, which is home to Lord Ayappa. It is a seven-day long festival that features the largest procession of elephants, and more than two hundred percussion artists perform in the temple.

Peruvanam Pooram This festival offers visitors an insight into the history, culture, and religion of the city of Thissur. Major highlights include the elephant procession and orchestra display.

Ollur Pally Perunnal This is a Christian festival held at one of the oldest churches in Kerala, called St. Anthony’s Forance Church. It takes place on the 23rd and 24th of October every year and is also known as the Feast of Saint Raphael. It is a colourful festival with the main highlights being umbrellas, vala procession, orchestra, chariots, and fireworks.

Puli Kali Onam is a major festival that is celebrated with extravagance throughout the state of Kerala. Being the cultural capital of the state, Thrissur goes one step beyond to offer another segment, Puli Kali, which is a traditional local art form. The performers dress up like tigers with face masks and tiger stripes all over their bodies. The art form is performed on the fourth day of Onam in different parts of the city. During the dance, one person acts as a hunter while the other chases Puli Kali. The art form adds a different essence to the festival and makes the festival grander for the onlookers.

Buon Natale This is Thrissur’s unique way of celebrating the festival of Christmas. The festival is conducted by Thrissur’s Archdiocese annually where tourists get to see a parade of people dressed as Santa Claus and Angels! The parade begins at St. Thomas Church and ends at Sakthan Thampuran.
