While we’d all love to be heading on vacation with every flight, at least 12 percent of those flying pre-pandemic were corporate travelers. In fact, in 2019, business travelers took 464 million domestic business trips in the United States. Now, business travel is slowly but surely picking back up.

As corporate travel often requires stepping off the plane and into a meeting , your plane outfit will likely look different than it does during leisure travel. You’ll want to pack versatile clothes that easily transition from day to night, comfortable yet dressy shoes, and sleek luggage. With that in mind, we’ve rounded up the business travel essentials below that will take you from the jet bridge to the boardroom without sacrificing form over function.

Essentials for work trip outfits

business travel fashion

Aday gives the classic white button-up a contemporary twist with its mandarin collar. Buttoned up, worn as an outer layer, or tucked in, the shirt is a versatile addition to the brand’s capsule wardrobe collection and your business wardrobe. The shirt is made of Aday's ‘Technical Silk’, a blend of nylon and elastane that dries quickly and resists wrinkling. Even better, it's made with UPF 50—you can never have too much sun protection . The cherry on top? The material is created in a renewable energy-powered mill.

Another Aday classic is the lightweight Turn It Around Pant. With claims from the company that the material is piling resistant up to 100,000 rough touches, you can expect to wear this pant again and again. The stretch fabric is thermoregulating and made in Italy. Slip these on with a pair of sneakers for your commute, then throw on heels as you head into the office. No one will be the wiser.

business travel fashion

M.M. LaFleur’s Lagarde shirt has all the components of other travel-friendly business clothes: it’s lightweight, machine washable, and wrinkle resistant. It has also been treated with an anti-odor finish, meaning smells don’t absorb into the material as easily. That means more wear and less laundry. Details like the gold-colored buttons and slightly textured fabric add an elevated sense of luxury to the shirt.

business travel fashion

A good culotte pant can give the illusion of limitless power, and the extra pleat on the sides of the Zhou offer an added swoosh. The high-waisted pants are wrinkle-resistant and loose enough for you to cross your legs on the floor of the airport but elevated enough to make a statement in the office. The fabric is wrinkle-resistant and made from wood pulp.

business travel fashion

Suiting up? Suits are notoriously stiff, but the xSuit was created to be comfortable even in transit. With a wrinkle-resistant stretch fabric that gives you back your range of motion, this suit is a one of our business travel essentials. It’s also machine washable and stain resistant, ideal for trips where you plan to do laundry or need to walk off the plane business ready.

business travel fashion

Button-up shirts are surprisingly versatile, going from day to night with the loosening of a collar. The Aero Zero Shirt has a relaxed fit, is machine washable, and dries quickly. Like any good travel shirt, the material of the Aero Zero Shirt is wrinkle-resistant and offers lightweight comfortability without losing its quality. It’s also made of 100 percent recycled fabric. The shirt’s moisture-wicking technology will keep you dry and cool on warmer days, too.

business travel fashion

While the Kinetic Tapered Pant looks like a dress pant, don’t be fooled. Between the stretch and moisture-wicking components of the warp-knit Japanese polyester, these pants are meant to be lived in. They’re comfortable enough to wear all day while maintaining an edge with the tapered fit. The addition of the hidden drawcord gives you a sleek, belt-free look (a time-saver when going through TSA). Even better, they are machine washable and wrinkle resistant.

This pair of pants lives up to its name, bringing to life the dream of wearing sweatpants to work. The structured design of the fabric gives it a professional feel, while the elastic waist and double-knit fabric promise to keep you comfortable on your next red-eye. Naturally, the material is also wrinkle-resistant.

Business casual shoes

business travel fashion

A classic white sneaker is a staple in any wardrobe, and these minimalistic leather Koio sneakers promise to accompany you wherever you need to go. Handmade from LWG Gold-certified Italian leather and fitted with an OrthoLite Hybrid insole, the chic sneakers require little to no break-in time. These shoes do run slightly large, so size down when you order.

business travel fashion

Naturalizer is a favorite shoe brand among flight attendants for a reason. These shoes offer comfort that can last through long shifts and longer airport terminal walks. The Felicia slingback is no exception, with a timeless style that can sharpen any outfit. The heel of these pumps is low enough for novice heel-wearers, and the ankle strap keeps the shoe secure across all kinds of pavement. Additional cushioning in the insole ensures your feet will stay comfortable over hours of wear.

Pashion shoes were created as a product that could be worn from night to day, commute to happy hour. The shoes have a patented design that converts heels to flats with a few easy twists. These multi-purpose pumps are especially helpful for small carry-on bags , allowing you to essentially bring two pairs of shoes while only needing space for one. One thing to note if you’re planning on wearing them as flats, most Pashion shoes need to be broken in a bit before they lay all the way flat.

business travel fashion

These aren’t your typical dress shoes, most of which pinch your toes without offering any support. With a foam that forms around your foot to deliver tailored support, they’re comfortable enough to withstand a long walk between terminals. The laser-perforated sheepskin lining increases airflow (which in return reduces sweaty feet). The shoes are made with A-grade hides from American steer, and the outsole is made from a durable blend of athletic and hiking material. You may not want to hit the trails with these, but they can go everywhere else.

business travel fashion

Handcrafted in Italy, these sleek Del Toro loafers promise you won’t have to sacrifice form over function. The beautiful shoe’s detailing includes red stitching at the back and an understated criss-cross on the front of the Napa leather exterior. The rubber sole gives the shoe additional grip, and the style is easy to slip on and off while going through airport security. They do run larger than your average loafer, so order a half size lower than you would normally.

Carry-on bags

business travel fashion

If you're going to have to run through the airport to catch a flight, do it with the Away Daily Carry-On which has 360° roller wheels. It's compact enough to be considered a carry-on item on most airlines (though it’s always good to double-check dimensions before you head to the airport), and the exterior pocket offers easy access for a 13” laptop, and a removable three-compartment accordion can keep any documents organized in transit. This carry-on is lightweight and portable, making it as useful on a daily commute as on business trips. Add a personal touch with a monogram stamp on the included luggage tag (just $10).

business travel fashion

The small but mighty Monos Carry On Pro is perfect for short business trips that don’t require a checked bag. The suitcase fits inside most overhead bins, and the TSA-approved lock ensures your zippers will stay in place. With an additional front compartment that fits a 15” laptop, you can slide in and out of TSA quickly (though you'll move even faster with TSA Pre-Check ). The suitcase is made of lightweight but durable polycarbonate and includes antimicrobial laundry bags and a compression system to help you make the most of the space inside. It comes in eight colors, plulimited edition hues.

The Carry All Weekender Plus is a versatile bag that fits plenty with its 50L capacity, including a padded pocket big enough for a 16” laptop. It offers travel-friendly designs such as a clamshell opening and a magnetic-closure external pocket for passports and boarding passes. The pass-through band also makes it easy to keep everything together by sliding your All Weekender Plus onto a roller bag.

Chic & Professional: 6 Business Travel Outfits

Chic & Professional: 6 Business Travel Outfits

Many Americans are familiar with business trips, having taken nearly 250 million of them in 2021 alone. 1 If your job has you hustling and bustling around the country (or around the world), you probably know a thing or two about weaving through the airport while balancing your wallet, phone, and a cortado.

But if you need a few more fashion tips on how to pack business travel outfits into a carry-on suitcase, you’ve moving-walkway shuffled to the right place. The good news is that when you choose the right pieces, you can get at least six outfits out of one carry-on bag.

We’ll guide you through a few essential pieces to keep in your hanging closet. Then, we’ll show you six different looks using simple, versatile items that work just as well in the boardroom as they do in the window seat.

Defining Business Casual for Travel

The term “business casual” can feel quite broad, even without the “travel” modifier. Businesspeople of the past wore suits—period. But nowadays, outfit choices are almost unlimited, making it harder to decide what to pack for a business trip.

Plus, when packing for a business trip, a woman is often faced with more options than their male working counterparts, between dress shoes, jewelry, and accessories.

So, what is business casual for women ? Insider defines business casual attire as clothing that is professional, but relaxed. 2 “Relaxed” is an especially important word when traveling, because less access to your extended wardrobe means you’ll spend more time in the travel clothes you packed.

Overall, business casual travel outfits should be comfortable enough to wear all day, but polished enough to make your best professional impression.

Tips for Packing Work Travel Outfits

Not sure where to start with work travel outfits that impress and go the distance? Before flinging clothes from your closet off the hangers and all over your bed, we’ve got a few fashion tips for you.

To help organize your packing strategy, consider these 3 priorities:

  • Luggage space – If you’re limited to one carry-on, your packing space is valuable. To solve this problem, the key word is versatility. Pack items that can be worn multiple times, for multiple occasions, as part of different outfits. This becomes easier if you choose plenty of neutral tones.
  • The itinerary – Is there a party scheduled after the main conference? Are you meeting clients for dinner at an upscale steakhouse? Put together your one “special occasion” outfit and pack it once you have every part of it planned out to save time later on.
  • The weather forecast – If your destination is warm, you’re in luck. No packing bulky winter coats! But if your work takes you to Chicago in December or Oslo in January, you’ll need more luggage space for warmer items like your cute winter coat —or plan to wear them on the plane.

Essential Items for Business Casual Travel Outfits

Let’s get specific about exactly which clothing items you’ll need on your trip. For starters, you’ll probably want at least two or three office looks, and since you likely won’t be spending every second of your trip in the office, you’ll also need a few options for after-hours events and traveling.

Two Basic Tops

In two different colors (black and white work beautifully). For warmer locales, a simple tank like our Scoop Tank or Roll-sleeve Tie Top goes with everything and can be worn under jackets or cardigans. For sweater weather, try something with more coverage, like our Long Sleeve Turtleneck.

One Dressier Blouse

If there are any parties or after-work dinners on the agenda, be sure to pack something with a little extra flare. One option is a silky top like our Drape Cami or Tie-Front Blouse . A dressy blouse on the modest side can double as an office look under a blazer.

Two Versatile Pairs of Pants

The holy grail of business trip slacks is comfy and wrinkle-resistant, yet tailored and high-quality enough to wear in the office. Like your basic tops, you’ll likely want two color variations. We love our black Travel Pant and off-white Piper Pant.

A Pencil Skirt

Pencil skirts pull triple duty: formal, casual, and anywhere in between. Find one comfy enough to travel in, and you’ll get even more wear out of it. Black is ideal, but gray, camel, navy, or anything else that matches what’s in your suitcase. For an easy-to-wear piece that can survive a plane ride, we recommend our Travel Pencil Skirt.

Chic & Professional: 6 Business Travel Outfits

Two Blazers

A staple of businesswear, you’ll need at least one or two blazers in your bag. Curious about how to style blazers ? A Houndstooth Blazer is classic, chic, and goes with both black and nude tones. For colder destinations, our Tweed Blazer doubles as an overcoat to keep you warm.

Soft, warm, and easy to transport, cardigans are an essential and versatile piece for traveling. They’re ideal for carrying in your backpack when you plan to explore the city during your time away from conferences or meetings. Our charcoal Shawl Cardigan is cozy enough to dine or sleep in (should you be taking a red-eye flight).

A Wrap Dress

The wrap dress practically defines versatility. Universally flattering, this basic can be dressed up or down for whatever occasion arises. It’s like the secret weapon of minimalist packing, and it’s even comfortable to wear. We’ll use our Cascade Wrap Dress for our list.

Simple Accessories

Your choice of accessories will depend on where you’re headed, but again, keep simplicity in mind so you can mix and match freely.

Consider options like:

  • Two pairs of earrings: one minimal, one statement
  • Two necklaces: one short, one long
  • A tote bag for carrying your phone and business cards
  • Two pairs of shoes: more casual flats and your most comfortable heels

Find a style that suits you and your travel attire in our collection .

6 Work Travel Outfits

Now that you have the essentials in mind, let’s talk about how to use them. Here are six business travel outfits that utilize those essentials to their fullest travel potential.

#1 Airport Chic

Our first travel outfit maximizes function without losing form. To create cute outfits for the airport , pair comfy, wrinkle-resistant bottoms like our stretch-knit Travel Pant with a basic top and cozy cardigan. Throw on a necklace to bring along a piece of jewelry without having to pack it. You’ll be flying in style.

Shop The Look:

  • Travel Pant
  • Scoop Tank or Long Sleeve Turtleneck
  • Shawl Cardigan
  • Beaded Long Mother of Pearl Necklace

#2 First Impressions

Our first work outfit couldn’t be simpler. A pencil skirt with one of your basic tops paired with a blazer makes a look that impresses without going overboard. Our recommended accessories? Kitten heel pumps and our Two Drop Mother of Pearl Earrings .

Shop The Look:

  • Trave l Pencil Skirt
  • Two Drop Mother of Pearl Earrings

#3 After Office Hours

For a formal dinner, holiday party, or any nighttime event, you can jazz up your simple outfits with a little bit of shine. Swap your basic top for the dressier one. Layer it under a blazer for more formal affairs. Balance out the shimmer of your top half with a simple black pencil skirt or pant, plus your favorite jewelry.

  • Sequin Duster
  • Travel Pant or Travel Pencil Skirt
  • Kenyan Iconoclast Hoop Earrings

#4 Charm & Handshakes

For our second work look, pair the off-white Piper Pant with a basic top and the Herringbone Coat. Too warm for a long coat? Swap it out with your second blazer. If your event allows, give your feet a break by wearing your flats.

  • Herringbone Coat or Blazer
  • Gemstone Teardrop Necklace

Chic & Professional: 6 Business Travel Outfits

#5 Leisure Time

Whether it’s a work brunch or a sightseeing break, you’ll need at least one off-duty outfit for the daytime, too. For this look, pair your trusty Piper Pant with a nice top like the Drape Cami. For colder days, add the Herringbone Coat and a scarf. For sunny weather, try our Cascade Wrap Dress.

  • Herringbone Coat
  • Cascade Wrap Dress

#6 Smooth Transitions

Here’s a look you can wear straight from the office to the after-party. Throw on your wrap dress and kitten heels. During the workday, go for more minimal jewelry, and after hours you can up your glam with larger hoops and bangle bracelets. If you get cold, grab your Herringbone Coat and strut everywhere.

  • Large Hoop Earrings

I Flew First Class From Rome to NYC—6 Outfit Mistakes I Avoided to Look Polished

business-class-travel-outfits-310796-1700928992749-main

Last month, when I pulled up to Rome's Fiumicino airport, it wasn't in an outfit I'd normally wear to board a 10-hour flight. In fact, you'd probably guess I was heading to the office or a lunch meeting if it weren't for the  roller suitcase I had in tow. But when I had the opportunity to travel in business class for a work trip I was taking to Europe, I jumped at the opportunity to update my typical  travel uniform for one that would help me dress the part of a frequent business-class flyer.

I wore the trousers that I wear to the office most days, the ballet flats I'd worn out to dinner the night before, and the designer handbag that's usually already packed deep in my luggage. In other words, it was a far cry from the athleisure staples I usually opt for. But without sacrificing comfort, I made a few key tweaks that looked far more put-together but ultimately still felt just as relaxed as if I were wearing sweats. It should go without saying, but I'm by no means telling you what you should do or wear when traveling. Instead, I'm simply filling you in on the styling choices I personally made to look and feel my best.

Here, I'm sharing the six outfit swaps I made for an ultra-polished airport ensemble . So no matter what your seating assignment is like, read on for my business class travel outfit tips that will have you looking your best for the next time you head to the airport.

Avoided Wearing: Leggings as Pants

Wore instead: relaxed jeans and trousers.

First things first, I knew I had to ditch my leggings. Don't get me wrong, I still wear them on most short domestic flights, but in order to dress the part for business class, they were the first things I skipped. Instead, I wore a pair of ultra-relaxed trousers that were so roomy they were equally are as comfortable as any leggings or sweatpants. On my outbound flight, I wore a pair of relaxed jeans that were a tad more casual than the trousers but still helped me feel pulled together.

Shop trousers and relaxed jeans:

Gap + SoftSuit Trousers

Avoided Wearing: Athletic Sneakers

Wore instead: ballet flats and loafers.

A pair of cool flats like ballet flats or loafers is a solid option instead of sneakers, and what's more is that they're easier to slip on and off to get through security and during the flight when you want to get even comfier.

Shop flats:

Jeffrey Campbell + Dancerina Ballet Flat

Avoided Wearing: Only a Big Tote Bag

Wore instead: also a handbag.

For most business and first class tickets, you're allowed more carry-on bags than you are for economy. So instead of stuffing all my essentials into one personal item, I kept wearing my Bottega Veneta Andiamo Bag as a small personal item, but also carried a tote for my laptop plus my roller suitcase. Carrying a third bag that only held small items like my phone and passport felt like such a luxury of convenience since I usually find myself digging through a large tote when I get to security, but ultimately I thought the addition of a chic bag helped my outfit look more polished and considered. I even noticed that I wasn't the only woman who did so. Others boarding in business class also carried their smaller luxury handbags in addition to any larger totes.

Shop handbags:

Bottega Veneta + Small Andiamo Intrecciato Leather Top-Handle Bag

Avoided Wearing: Oversize Sweatshirts

Wore instead: elevated sweater.

Hoodies and sweatshirts are fine and all, but a cashmere or wool-blend sweater is usually just as comfortable but for me, it made a world of difference in my overall look. I wore the  Francis Sweater by Éterne and now it's a fixture in ever suitcase I pack.

Shop sweaters:

Éterne + Francis Sweater

Avoided: Skipping Jewelry

Wore instead: everyday jewelry.

Jewelry is the last thing I put on in the morning, so when I'm heading to the airport (and more than likely in a rush), I usually forget to put any on. I made a point of wearing all my everyday jewelry staples for this flight including a tennis necklace, small hoop earrings, and thin stacking rings (while also skipping anything too chunky or uncomfortable). I think it helped add a finishing touch to pull things together.

Shop jewelry:

Baublebar + Pear Cut Stone Tennis Necklace

Avoided: Puffer Jacket

Wore instead: trench coat or tailored coat.

Layers are key for any transcontinental flight, so I opted for a trench coat as a light layer atop my sweater. Now that it's getting to be winter, though, I'd wear a tailored wool coat for something thicker to lend some structure to my overall silhouette.

Shop outerwear:

Lioness + Trencherous Coat

You may have a designated travel sweatshirt or a favorite pair of shoes to wear on flights — but what about other essentials, like pants, jackets, T-shirts, dresses, and pajamas? If you prioritize comfort in transit, it’s time to revamp your travel wardrobe to ensure every trip is a cozy one. Lucky for you, we editors at Travel + Leisure rounded up a few of our favorite comfy clothing items we always wear on the road and in the sky.

From impossibly soft lounge sets to what we believe are the world’s comfiest jeans, we've combed our closets for those few items we tend to wear every time we travel. Our list includes favorites from Lululemon, Patagonia, Lilly Pulitzer, and more, so whether you prefer to travel in loose-fitting loungewear or more compressive clothing, you’re sure to find something you love below.

lululemon Define Jacket Luon

We’ve all been on a flight that’s chilly enough for some extra layers but too warm for a heavy coat or sweatshirt. That’s why we always pack this comfy, light jacket in our carry-on. Not only is it incredibly sleek and stylish thanks to its slim fit, but it’s also super soft, stretchy, breathable, and easy to move in. The sleeves even feature thumbholes and “cuffins” (cuffs that can be folded over your hands) for added warmth. Snag the Define Jacket Luon in eight sizes and five shades including espresso and bone.

“This jacket is essentially my plane uniform — I wear it every single time I fly,” editor Sophie Mendel said. “It's comfy but keeps me looking put-together, plus I can wear it with leggings and sneakers for a super functional, comfortable, and cute transit 'fit. It also has two zippered pockets which are extra-convenient during travel.”

Calia Women's Inspire High Rise 7/8 Legging

Dick's Sporting Goods

Flying in compression leggings is wise, especially for long-haul flights, but some compression leggings tend to squeeze you uncomfortably. That’s never a problem with Calia’s Inspire High Rise 7/8 leggings, though. Boasting subtle compression that molds to your body, the leggings are sure to remain comfy and breathable without sliding down or sagging. They even have unique seam lines that strategically accentuate your curves — though, admittedly,  this is more noticeable in some colors than others. To top it off, we love the way they feel to the touch.

“These Calia leggings are without a doubt the softest pair I own,” associate editor Hillary Maglin said. “I've worn them for everything from yoga classes to grocery runs to a recent 12-hour travel day, and I've remained comfy through it all. The leggings are thick without hindering mobility, and they're compressive without digging into my stomach (something I can't stand). It also doesn't hurt that they have subtle side pockets large enough for my phone. Though I have plenty of black leggings in my wardrobe, I find myself reaching for these ones again and again.”

Commes Des Garçons Play x Converse Chuck Taylor Hidden Heart Low Top Sneakers

It's true: Converse never goes out of style. Conveniently, the sleek sneakers tend to last forever, too, so consider copping a pair of the Converse x Comme des Garçons Play Chuck 70s. They feature the typical silhouette of the brand’s low tops, plus they come in white or black. No matter which color you choose, this particular style also boasts the Comme des Garçons red heart and eyes logo on the side. You can snag these in women’s sizes 5 to 15 and men’s sizes 3 to 13.

“This is my go-to travel shoe because it's comfortable but also dressy enough that I can wear it throughout my trip when I want an elevated sneaker look,” travel editor Susmita Baral said.

Paka Men's Apu Lightweight Puffer

One of our most important tips for traveling in comfort? Dress to avoid freezing or overheating. With this lightweight men’s puffer from Paka, regulating your body temperature is easy. It’s so slim that it looks more like a hoodie than a puffer, but its hidden layers and insulation efficiently lock in warmth. Even if you choose not to wear it in transit, you can effortlessly pack it down into a bag or suitcase.

“This puffer jacket has the warmth of a parka but not the bulkiness, which makes it the perfect outerwear to bring while traveling,” writer Anna Popp said. “It can fit in a suitcase easily and it's also perfectly cozy and warm to wear on an airplane if you need to save extra space. I love that it looks nice while going out in the city on a snowy day, but that it’s also designed to be worn for sportier occasions like skiing, hiking, climbing, or running.”

J.McLaughlin Lowden Jeans

J.McLaughlin

We know, we know — traveling in jeans might as well be a crime. We thought so, too, until we got our hands on J.McLaughlin’s Lowden jeans. The stretchy cotton denim feels more like a soft pair of leggings, and even after long-haul flights, we never felt restricted or uncomfortable in them. The jeans feature a wide-leg slim fit for added mobility and a high waist for comfort and confidence on and off the plane.

“I never thought I would be a jeans person for airplanes but after wearing these on a cross-country flight, I'm a big fan now,” said Popp. “These jeans are super stretchy and roomy, so if (and when) I get bloated while traveling, the high-waist fabric doesn't dig into my stomach or cause me any discomfort. They also look super cute and stylish and can be styled with many different outfits, so I’ve officially added these jeans to my travel wardrobe for every trip.”

Patagonia Women's Nano Puff Jacket

We’re adamant that Patagonia’s Nano Puff is the jacket every traveling woman needs in her wardrobe. It’s lightweight, packable, durable, stylish, warm, windproof, water-resistant — need we go on? Some of our favorite extras are a drawstring hemline to seal in heat and hidden internal pockets. On top of all its functional features, it also comes in sizes ranging from XXS to XXL and 11 colors including buckhorn green, chilled blue, and sandy melon.

“When it comes to packable jackets for women, this one from Patagonia is the best option for virtually any trip,” Popp said. “The design is simple but very functional, and I love being able to wear it for any season. In the winter, it's thin enough to layer for more warmth, but I can wear it as-is during summer camping trips. My outdoor-adventuring family all own Nano puff jackets and they still look as good as new, so I love that they’re built to last – possibly forever – in my opinion.”

Travel + Leisure / Sabrina Weiss

Rag & Bone Miramar Jogger

Rag & Bone

These joggers are so stylish, you’d never guess they’re also comfy as can be. Don’t let their denim appearance fool you — they’re actually made of soft cotton terry that provides stellar mobility and comfort. Over the legging look for travel? Throw these on instead, and pair them with a pair of boots or walking shoes and moto jacket for an effortlessly cool look you don’t even have to change out of once you reach your destination.

“These Rag & Bone joggers are simply the best for travel,” editor-in-chief Jacqui Gifford said. “I call them ‘faux’ jeans; the fabric looks like it’s a regular old pair of denim, but surprise — they have the softness and ease of a pair of sweats. Ideal for a plane ride or even a long day out on a tour, these are the ultimate pants that blend function, form, and style.”

Forme Power Bra

In need of a comfy new sports bra to keep everything in place on your next journey? Our editors (and a certain blonde popstar) are all about the Forme Power Bra. It’s comfy, cute, compressive, and most impressively, designed to zap bad posture. The wide straps take pressure off your shoulders and back, while the comfortable fit promotes proper body alignment, quick recovery, and overall health. We even love all seven colors it comes in — especially rosé and ecru.

"As a bra-needer and someone who really shouldn't be traveling without one, I absolutely hate wearing something bulky while I fly,” associate photo editor Alessandra Amodio said. “My go-to is the Forme Power Bra. Not only is it incredibly comfortable and made of high-quality material, but it’s actually FDA-registered to correct posture and improve your body alignment. Now I fly comfortably and my neck, shoulders and back feel so much better. I just throw on a cute open button down, pair it with the Ergo Shorts or Sculpt+ Leggings , and look chic and put-together while traveling. (This is also what Taylor Swift wore in her Eras Tour rehearsals according to a photo from her Time Person of the Year profile — if it's good enough for Taylor, it's good enough for me.)”

Circus by Sam Edelman Zuri Strap Ballet Flat

Circus by Sam Edelman

We love that ballet flats are back — and this strappy style demands to be worn. The low heel and soft interior make them a great, pain-free option for travel while cross straps, buckles, and tiny beaded bows keep things stylish. They come in 11 sizes including half sizes, and 15 unique colors and prints. We recommend the shades dark French macaroon, light wash, and the leopard-printed beige brown.

“Even though you’d think flats would always be a comfortable shoe option, it’s actually surprisingly difficult to find flats that don’t dig into your feet or make your toes all sweaty,” testing editor Jackie Cucco said. “I’ve tried so many pairs that seem comfortable at first, but end up being too rigid and irritating by the end of the day. This is the first pair I’ve found that is soft enough to wear all day long, either with or without socks or tights. They feel like slippers, and they come in more than a dozen colors to match any vibe.”

Black Diamond Notion Pants

Black Diamond

Whether you’re headed to the airport, the trails, or even the gym, the Black Diamond men’s Notion Pants are your best bet for comfort and mobility. Designed with an elastic waist, a drawstring cord, and a loose fit, these pants feel almost like wearing your favorite pair of sweatpants. However, their slim appearance complete with two hand pockets and two rear pockets make them dapper enough to wear to dinner, a show, or even the office. Grab them in a neutral hue like ash or tundra, or opt for a more eye-catching shade like raging sea or burnt Sienna.

“You don't have to be an Alex Honnold–level rock climber to love these super-soft pants,” news director Paul Brady said. “They're comfortable enough for long-haul flights, even in coach, but they've still got a crisp silhouette to keep you looking put-together.”

Lilly Pulitzer Seaview Top & Deri Palazzo Pant Linen Set

Lilly Pulitzer

You can’t go wrong with Lilly Pulitzer, especially when it comes to jetsetting. This breathable, lightweight linen set from the brand is just as soft and cozy as it is cute, so we recommend adding it to your travel wardrobe immediately. The classic, collared button-down is super versatile thanks to cuffable sleeves and a tieable bottom — plus you can turn it into a jacket or cover-up by layering it unbuttoned over literally any other outfit. Snag the ultra-flattering matching pants to complete the look.

“I think the most versatile item to pack on a warm-weather vacay is a white linen button down, and this roomy one from Lilly Pulitzer is good enough to also grab in other colors like spearmint and mulberry,” associate editorial director Morgan Ashley Parker said. “I’ve worn it unbuttoned over a swimsuit and then slipped on matching palazzo pants — with an irresistible elasticized waist — for dinner alfresco. I personally love the all-white combo for warmer climates but the New Yorker in me would also recommend grabbing the coordinating onyx x onyx set if you can catch it in stock.”

Spanx AirEssentials Wide Leg Pant

There are few things softer than Spanx Air Essentials’ Wide Leg Pants. They feel similar to the brand's sleek and smoothing leggings and shapewear, but they have a relaxed fit rather than a super compressive one. While the pants could certainly be worn as loungewear, they’re also fashionable enough to wear to the airport, a coffee shop, or on an errand run. Though they fit and even look a bit like sweatpants, figure-enhancing contouring on the rear differentiates them from your typical comfy clothing.

“It’s impossible to find a better material than Spanx AirEssentials ,” Parker said. “All pieces feel silky to the touch, hefty enough for a chilly plane cabin, and pretty much impossible to wrinkle. I’m super into wide-leg styles — and need this exact petite option for my 5' 3" frame — and these pants are pretty much a given on my long flights nowadays. Personally, I love the olive-y palm color as an alternative to black or navy, so my only real choice is whether to match them with a crew neck or a sleek half zip instead.”

Pitusa Pima Abaya

If your ideal wardrobe staple is a do-it-all piece, look no further than Pitusa’s Pima Abaya. The cozy caftan is perfect for everything from international flights to pool days to bedtime. That’s thanks to impossibly soft cotton construction, oversized sleeves, and an airy, relaxed fit. There are no buttons, snaps, or drawstrings on this piece, so you’ll never have to worry about uncomfortable digging or fussing with it in order for it to fit right. You can customize your fit upon buying, though, and you can even choose from 15 colors.

“I joke about my ideal wardrobe consisting of a caftan in every color and this floor-length maxi fits perfectly into that vibe,” Parker said. “It can serve as a dress, cover-up, nightgown — pretty much anything, all day, every day in a tropical climate. The lightweight pima cotton is incredibly soft, too, and it comes in petite, standard, and tall options to reduce tailoring needs. I like this exact one because it’s not so sheer that I wouldn’t wear it out to dinner or on the plane but if you’re looking for more of a peekaboo style, you can get the same cut in a burnout fabric instead.”

Mar Soreli Ginger Mary Jane

Mar Soreli

Looking to travel in comfort without sacrificing style? Check out the Ginger Mary Janes by Mar Soreli. Everything from the insole to the strap is ultra-soft and cushioned, plus the buckle and strap are easy to tighten and loosen for a custom fit — or for quickly taking on and off at TSA. They’re even soft to the touch thanks to velvet uppers, and they’re versatile enough to wear with leggings, skirts, dresses, and jeans.

“If you’re someone who wishes slippers were appropriate outdoor shoes, these ballet flats are the next best thing,” Parker said. “The velvet is so cozy but still looks great with anything from plane leggings to a nicer skirt on a night out, with or without socks or tights. And, if you do want to wear them through security (and don’t have TSA PreCheck®), each strap actually has a snap in addition to the buckle adjustment so they’re incredibly quick to slip on and off as needed.”

Allbirds Wool Runners

Allbirds shoes were basically made for travel, and the Men’s Wool Runners are some of our absolute favorites. The inside is actually lined with fine merino wool, making for soft and warm-yet-breathable wear no matter the time of the year. On top of that, the sneakers are equipped with reliable arch support and machine washable fabric. While we wouldn’t recommend them for running, they’re the perfect comfy shoes for pretty much everything else, including walking, hiking, and navigating the airport.

“My husband swears by these comfortable men's walking shoes so much that I ordered a pair of the women's version for myself,” senior editor Kayla Becker said. “And they really deliver. We both love the thick, foamy cushion that keeps our feet supported on long travel days, and they've stood up to everything from 20,000-step jaunts in Iceland to hiking Diamond Head in Hawaii.”

Aday Turn It Up Pants

Tapered trousers are office staples — so if you’re traveling for business, we suggest adding a pair or two of the Aday Turn It Up Pants to your wardrobe. They’re the goes-with-everything piece you’ve been looking for, and their soft, tailored stretch paired with an elastic waistband makes them comfy enough to catch a flight in. The ankle-length pants have a pocket at each hip and are available in a dozen colors.

“As soon as I found these sleek, wrinkle-free travel pants, they became a permanent part of my travel uniform (and I've even written about how all the travel editors I know have them ),” Becker said. “They're not only super comfortable for long-haul flights (I just flew 14 hours in them and felt like I was wearing pajamas), but they also look put-together right off the plane, whether I'm headed to the office or a walking tour. I'd wear them literally anywhere.”

Saucony Endorphin Speed 4

If you’re the type of traveler that likes to workout on the road, Saucony’s Endorphin Speed 4 is the versatile sneaker for you. Not only is it an ideal comfy running shoe, but it’s also lightweight and sleek enough to wear for every other part of your journey, too. Whether you wear it on the plane or to sightsee once you arrive at your destination, you’ll always feel supported in the Speed 4. Choose from five eye-catching colorways and 15 sizes including half-sizes.

“I've been training for the London Marathon, and since I started wearing these sneakers, I haven't had a single ounce of pain in my feet, even on long runs,” senior editorial director Nina Ruggiero said. “They are extremely cushioned yet so lightweight. Even after the race is done, I imagine I might be wearing them on the long flight home to LA.”

Fundamental Coast Shorebreak Hoodie

Fundamental Coast

To make the most of the space in your suitcase, you’ll want to prioritize versatile pieces that can do it all. That’s why we love the Fundamental Coast Shorebreak Hoodie so much. It’s perfect for travel days and morning walks near your hotel, but it’s also elevated enough to wear to a cafe, museum, or shops around town. The pullover hoodie has a front pocket, drawstring hood, and slim fit for a more put-together appearance. Grab it in phantom black or storm, which both have a beachy, heathered texture.

“Fundamental Coast has perfected Southern California athleisure, especially for men, and my fiancé lives in the brand's hoodies, shorts, vests, and polos,” Ruggiero said. “The Shorebreak hoodie is especially soft and sleek and works well whether we're out doing something active or going to brunch at a new spot in our beachy LA neighborhood.”

Vuori Cove Funnel Neck Tank

Vuori

This high-necked tank top is so stylish, you’d never guess it’s also comfy enough for exercise, stretching out on a plane, or even napping. Crafted with a soft and stretchy rayon-elastane fabric blend, this top never digs into the skin or feels uncomfortably tight around the neck. While it’s not quite cropped, it’s not too long, either, so it’s likely to complement a variety of bodies and ensembles.

“This super-soft rib knit tank is my go-to running top, but the high neck also gives it some style (in addition to protecting my most sensitive areas from the sun),” Ruggiero said. “I have it in multiple colors, and I've definitely worn the black and tan ones out with friends at night, too.”

Vuori Echo Insulated Vest

Vuori

A reliable vest is essential for travelers — it locks in warmth without causing you to overheat, and it couldn’t be easier to zip on and off. We’re big fans of this one from Vuori for its insulation, water resistance, and easy cleaning. It has zip pockets for your hands or small items, and a subtle collar keeps heat from escaping while allowing your neck total range of motion, irritation-free. To top it off, the vest comes in two stylish shades.

“This lightweight but warm insulated vest has quickly become one of my fiancé's favorite items of clothing,” Ruggiero said. “He wears it on dog walks, weekends, and travel days — it even has pockets.”

Reef Men's Swellsole Cutback Sneaker

It’s no secret that Reef is one of the most trusted rugged shoe brands around, so when it released boat shoes, we were intrigued. It turns out Reef’s boat shoes are just as comfy and long-lasting as the sandals we know and love. The men’s Swellsole Cutback Sneakers are the perfect fusion of classic boat shoes and cushioned sneakers, and they’re perfect for beachy vacations. Wear them from the dock straight to dinner — then keep them on for a busy night of exploring the boardwalk.

“I always thought of Reef for flip-flops, but since my fiancé found their hybrid boat shoes/sneakers, he's bought them in at least three colors,” Ruggiero said. “They're supportive thanks to memory foam, and can be dressed up or down.”

Public Rec All Day Pants

Odds are, you’ve seen these popular pants everywhere from the office to the coffee shop to the airport. That’s because their straight-leg fit and stretchy nylon-spandex fabric move with you rather than tightly confining your waist and legs like other styles. But don’t let their uber-soft texture fool you — these pants are still equipped with two front pockets, two faux back pockets, belt loops, and a zipper fly, so you’ll look and feel just as sophisticated as you are comfortable when you wear these.

“The slacks feel almost like loungewear thanks to their soft nylon-spandex blend,” editor Taylor Fox said. “They're the perfect balance of comfort and style for long flights where you don't want to feel cramped into tight pants, but want to still look put-together when you land. They can also be dressed up or dressed down for added versatility no matter what you have on the agenda.”

ManMade Boxers and T-shirt Bundle

ManMade Brand

One can never have too many basics, and we love this three-piece pack from ManMade. Each set comes with two pairs of black boxer briefs and one white T-shirt. Made of high-quality modal, spandex, and Pima cotton, the briefs and tee are guaranteed to remain soft, breathable, moisture-wicking, and anti-chafing through everything — even long-haul flights and airport sprints. To ensure your comfort, the bundle comes in six sizes ranging from small to 3XL.

“My husband packs about a dozen pairs of boxers and undershirts for a weeklong trip and his absolute favorites come from ManMade,” Fox said. “They're lightweight and breathable with a buttery soft material that doesn't add a bulky layer under clothing. All of their items contain the perfect amount of stretch as well without allowing the clothing to ride up or bunch in uncomfortable places whether he's hiking, riding his bike, or preparing for a long flight.”

The Mate Organic Waffle Knit Joggers

There’s something so luxurious about a good waffle weave. Designed with a relaxed fit and buttery soft texture, these Organic Waffle Knit Joggers by Mate are no exception. They’re made of 100 percent organic cotton, crafted with elastic at the waist and ankles, and equipped with one pocket on the back right side. The cozy joggers come in four neutral colors (jet black, bone, lilac, and bark) and five sizes. You can also drop the matching Organic Waffle Long Sleeve Shirt in your cart to complete the look.

“If I could replace all of my joggers with these comfortable, waffle-knit pants I would,” writer Ali Domrongchai said. “They have the perfect amount of stretch that lends itself well to long travel days, and thanks to its textured design, they not only feel good, but look good, too. In fact, since I've been wearing these cozy knit joggers, a few of my friends have snagged a pair as well because of how much I rave about them.”

Tips for Buying Comfortable Travel Clothes

Consider the material.

When traveling, it’s important to choose clothing that’s as comfortable and low-maintenance as possible. That said, we recommend clothes made of soft, sweat-wicking, and breathable fabrics such as cotton, polyester, linen, or wool. It’s also wise to opt for wrinkle-resistant materials like nylon and spandex to keep you looking fresh and put-together.

Look for travel features

Though it may feel unnecessary, we guarantee you’ll end up thanking yourself for buying pants, dresses, and bags with lots of extra pockets. Additionally, temperature-regulating clothes can come in pretty handy when you’re on the road — so consider adding clothing with cooling capabilities (or just clothes made of linen, nylon, or polyester) to your travel wardrobe.

The most breathable clothing is made of materials like cotton, linen, nylon, polyester, merino wool, and silk. Though fabrics like spandex, fleece, and denim have plenty of benefits, they’re not quite as breathable.

Generally soft, stretchy, and loose-fitting clothing is best for travel, as it’ll keep you comfy and won’t feel restrictive on long flights or drives. Some people may also opt for compressive clothing, like leggings or compression socks, which helps promote circulation on long travel days. You may also want to choose clothing you know to be breathable so you don’t overheat.

Why Trust Travel + Leisure

For this article, associate commerce editor Hillary Maglin collaborated with other members of the T+L team to conclude which clothing that we’ve personally used is the most comfortable for travel days. Hillary travels by plane and car several times a year and is obsessed with soft and slouchy pieces to keep her comfy on her journeys.

A New Women’s Line of Business Travel Clothes

Shopping for business professional clothes is difficult enough – throw on top of that shopping for business professional outfits that can withstand weeks of travel. Having wrinkle-free clothes means you don’t need to spend your first night at the hotel ironing everything for the week, and having plenty of hidden pockets means you can keep items like your ID or money safe and secure while on the road.

Bluffworks is a company that designs clothes for travel. This means clothes that are machine washable and wrinkle resistant, meaning I don’t need to take a chunk out of my day to visit a dry cleaner on the weekend. Bluffworks isn’t just designing professional clothes, but they are innovating to make our lives more convenient when we have a heavy travel schedule.

Business Travel Clothes for Women

Bluffworks just released their line of women’s clothes for travel this past fall, and I was really excited to try out some of these new pieces. In collaboration with Bluffworks, I was sent four items from their women’s line to test out: a t-shirt, a blouse, a dress, and a pair of pants. I wore these outfits last week while traveling for work, and you can see all of my thoughts on each piece below.

All of the photos shown below are after one week of wear, and straight out of the dryer. I ran all 4 pieces through the washing machine and did not iron them, so you can see how well they turn out right after being washed. For reference in these photos, I am 5’7 and typically wear a size XS in tops and size 1 in pants.

Threshold Performance T-Shirt in Mist Grey (Size XS)

a woman in a grey shirt

Recently, I have been traveling west coast to east coast on Monday through Thursday for work. On my travel day, I paired my Threshold Performance T-Shirt with a pair of jeans and sneakers. This short sleeve v-neck shirt is fitted without being too tight, and is so soft. If I ordered another shirt I would consider sizing up for a looser look.

This t-shirt is pretty casual so I wouldn’t wear this shirt to a client, but it’s perfect for travel days or site seeing with coworkers when you’re off the clock. Especially since it is odor resistant, this travel top is great for longer days. Paired with a blazer, it could make a great happy hour outfit as well.

Trevi Dress in Evening Navy (Size 0)

a woman in a blue dress

I was initially cautious about bringing this dress for work, because I do have a harder time finding dresses that are long enough to be professional. I was pleasantly surprised at the fit of the Trevi dress ! It hits me just above the knee. Paired with a blazer or a cardigan, you can definitely dress this outfit up to be business casual.

Every woman loves a dress with pockets, and this dress has 6. Honestly, it’s kind of overwhelming. Pockets in your pockets, and even a pocket right under your arm. I don’t like the bulk, so for me pockets are for a place to hide your hands when you don’t know what to do with them. Though, the pockets are definitely handy if you decide to go site seeing with the dress and need to hide your passport or money. But on a typical business travel day, the pockets are more for bragging than for use.

Azores Blouse in Pale Rose (Size XS)

a woman standing on one leg in a street

Who doesn’t need more button ups? One of the biggest pains about traveling for work is having to iron your clothes, and you can see here the Azores Blouse right out of the dryer.  Not bad! The most interesting features of this blouse include the extra fabric to cover the buttons, and an extra clasp over your chest to make sure your bra doesn’t show through. I’m wearing a nude bra here, and the shirt is not at all see through as well. This shirt is plenty long; I would not wear it to a client un-tucked.

What surprised me about this shirt were the sleeves. There’s no buttons, but the sleeves are elastic to stay in place. It makes the shirt difficult to roll up neatly; you can see how I just pushed them up here. Pushing the sleeves up is easy with the elastic, but doesn’t look quite as professional. Either way, this is a great versatile shirt that can be an addition to your business professional wardrobe.

Trevi Ankle Pant in Pitch Black (Size 2)

a woman standing on a street

I’ll start by saying that I am pretty picky when it comes to pants. For my professional pants, as seen in photos with my Azores Blouse above, my style typically gravitates towards skinny pants in a size Tall for extra length. I honestly had pretty low expectations for the Trevi Ankle Pant … so I was really surprised how much I like them!

These pants make me look so fashionable! The Trevi Ankle Pant is high waisted and, like the Trevi Dress, has pockets on pockets. The back pockets are real, and there’s even credit card pockets in the waistband. I’m obsessed because I can stick my whole hand in the front pockets while my analyst walks me through his latest report.

Recently I have been fluctuating between size 0-3 for pants, and because I don’t want my professional pants to be too tight, I decided to size up to the 2. However, if I were to get another pair I’d probably go with the 0.

Women’s Business Travel Clothing

Overall, I am really excited for the Bluffworks women’s line. I try to rotate my outfits out each week, but my Trevi Ankle Pants are packed in my carry-on for week 2. The pieces are great for my job as a consultant, and I admire the research that Bluffworks has put into determining what makes clothes better for travel. I look forward to seeing what new clothes come out!

At the time of this post, the entire Bluffworks women’s line is 20%! Check their site for more colors and options.

What to Pack for a Business Trip: A Women’s Guide to Traveling in Style

So you’ve got an upcoming work trip and the time has come to start planning for your travels.

For some, hitting the road is a career must. Conferences are your love language and you always find new favorite spots every palace you go to.

For others, it’s a hassle. After all, on top of prepping projects or presentations, you now have the additional baggage of travel.

If you’re staring at your closet, unsure of what to pack for a business trip, welcome. You’ve come to the right place.

Press pause on stuffing every possible outfit you might need into your suitcase. Instead, sit down with our one-and-done women’s guide for stress-free work travel. From how to pack your bag to what should make the cut in the first place, we’ve thought of everything.

How to Pack for a Business Trip: Tips for Business Women

Before we get into what to pack for a business trip, let’s tackle how to pack for a business trip.

At Next Level Wardrobe , we encourage our clients to approach clothing with intentionality, and to value quality over quantity. Use these as your two guide posts as you prepare for your trip.

What does this mean in practice?

It means that every item you take with you should be there for a specific purpose. Have a realistic idea of what your trip requires instead of over-stuffing your bags with “just-in-case” items. Remember, you’re going on a business trip, not on a spontaneous adventure.

Approach your travels with a clear, concise plan and you’ll actually be more prepared and you’ll feel more put-together.

Our top tip for women wondering how to pack for a business trip is to start with the perfect luggage.

Choosing the Best Luggage for Your Business Trip

View this post on Instagram A post shared by TUMI (@tumitravel)

Although every trip and traveler is different, the need for a high-quality piece of luggage stays the same. First, you want a bag that’s sturdy to avoid any mid-travel misshapes or shopping for a replacement too soon.

Next, you want a bag that’s the right size for your travel needs.

In our experience, selecting a carry-on suitcase and either a backpack or a duffle bag is enough for most trips. (We’ll break this down with our packing list and how to pack your bag later on.)

An added bonus of this luggage duo? If you’re traveling by plane, you’ve got everything you need at your fingertips. No worrying about lost bags or racing against the clock at baggage claim.

When picking out what to pack for a business trip, we recommend checking out Tumi . They’ve got all things bags, backpacks, and suitcases. They’ve got a wide range of sizes, makes, and models from compact carry-ons to spacious weekenders for all occasions. You can also count on their complementary baggage trace system in case of loss or theft.

Last but not least, their warranty has you covered. The first year includes just about any type of damage to the suitcase (even from TSA or airline workers). Years 2 through 5 cover you for manufacturer defects or normal wear and tear.

Now that you’ve got your bags, let’s get to packing them.

How to Pack Clothes for a Business Trip

With your perfect luggage in hand, let’s make the most of the space inside it. Recently, our NLW founder Cassandra Sethi went on a 6-week trip with just a carry-on and personal item. She was able to create 50 outfits with only 24 clothing items (including shoes).

Stuck on how to pack for a business trip in terms of clothes? Here are our tips for women on getting everything inside your bag:

1. Pack pants by folding them in half and laying them flat. We recommend placing these at the bottom of your bag so you can easily fit other items on top

2. Roll your tops over the pants. This is best for casual or knit-woven tops that won’t wrinkle too easily. Button-downs or other blouses and dresses are best folded on top of the pants. You can always steam these items once you arrive at your destination.

3. Fold sweaters flat and pack them over the rolled tops, leaving space for your shoes.

4. Pack your shoes inside a shoe bag. Some retailers sell dedicated shoe travel bags for this, but an old drawstring bag will do just fine as well.

5. If you’re traveling with a suit or gown, do not roll it. Either fold it neatly along with your pants or keep them in a garment bag.

When discussing what to pack for a business trip with clients or on our Instagram, we often get asked about packing cubes. Is it worth buying them or other supposed “space-savers”?

We vote no.

When you learn to lean out your wardrobe and you have the right bag, you don’t need anything else.

What to Pack for a Business Trip: Set Your Suitcase up for Success

Before we get into our packing list, we have to address the elephant in the room: your closet.

If you don’t have the right pieces in your closet, you won’t have the right pieces in your suitcase either.

Perhaps you’ve got a closet full of too many pieces that don’t go together or don’t fit your current body. Maybe you’ve got a wardrobe of impulse buys that you wore once and ended up regretting.

Chances are, you won’t feel excited or confident about bringing these pieces on your business trip. This leads to overcompensating by overpacking just to try to string one outfit together.

To avoid these feelings in the first place, we recommend a closet clean-out . At NLW, we use a proprietary style system on all of our clients to help them feel confident, gain unlimited outfit options and love their purchases.

Once you’ve invested in the right pieces, colors, and fit, you’re ready to take on any business trip in style.

What to Pack for a Business Trip: Our Essential Women’s Business Travel Packing List

Screenshot Of An Instagram Story Advising To Focus On Core Colors When Packing For A Business Trip

In our opinion, you don’t need a completely new outfit for every single day of your trip. The most efficient way to approach what to pack for a business trip is to stick to core colors.

Core colors are black, grey, navy, and white. These neutral shades are versatile enough to endlessly mix and match with each other. For example, with 4 pants, one in each core color, and two tops, you can create 8 different outfits.

Core Colors Triangle with three sections for colors of a closet

You can always add a piece or two in a tonal color (shades of core colors) or an accent color. However, those items should be the minority of what’s in your suitcase.

Here are our clothing recommendations on what to pack for a business trip, item by item:

Tops  – Blouses/dress tops – Casual/t-shirt tops

Bottoms – Denim – Non-Denim options like trousers, slacks, skirts

Dress (If you wear them.)

Layering Pieces (Depending on the climate.) – Sweaters – Blazer – Coat/Jacket

Shoes (Depending on the length of your trip, the MAX amount you should bring is 3.) – Dressy sneakers – Flats – Heels

If you’ve got lingering questions about what to pack on a business trip, keep scrolling for our travel FAQs.

I always overpack, how can I stop doing this?

This all starts with how you approach shopping and building your wardrobe at large. If you have versatile, well-fitting, essential pieces in your wardrobe, you won’t feel the need to over-pack.

Declutter your closet of unnecessary items, and stick to pieces you’ll wear again and again and easily mix and match.

Then, when it’s time for your trip, consult your itinerary and map out exactly what you’ll need for each day. Don’t give into bringing pieces on the off-chance that you’ll unexpectedly need them.

I mean, you’re not bringing every single item from your work desk to your business trip, right? Apply the same thinking to your clothing.

How do you pack for different climates?

Two words: Light layers.

Start off with one essential piece you’ll need for each climate.

Here’s an example. Starting your trip in arid Phoenix, Arizona? Grab a classic tank top in a core color. Next stop: always foggy San Francisco? Block out the bay breeze with a cashmere cardigan. Heading to Toronto in the wintertime? Pack a timeless black or grey coat.

Pair these items back to business-ready trousers or pants and you’re ready for anything.

Is there a set number of clothes you should bring on a business trip?

No. It all depends on the length of your trip, your itinerary, and even the industry you’re in. The packing list above will give you a good baseline to start at. Customize it to fit your needs.

What about non-work clothes for when you’re off the clock on your trip?

No trip is all business all the time. It’s okay to bring a couple of non-workwear items IF (say it with us) you know you’ll wear and need them .

For example, if you’ve scheduled yourself to hit a nearby nature trail on a free morning, go ahead and pack one workout look.

In fact, if you’ve followed all the above steps, you should have room in your suitcase for necessary off-the-clock pieces.

At Tortuga, our mission is to make travel easier. Our advice and recommendations are based on years of travel experience. We only recommend products that we use on our own travels.

Table of Contents

Knowing the little hacks to make a travel day flow more smoothly, or your time in a hotel in a strange city feel more like home, makes a big difference in how enjoyable business travel can be.

Last year,  457.2 million domestic business trips  were taken in the United States. Over the three years, that number is predicted to rise to  471.1 million trips .

That’s a lot of jetting around on business. Also, a lot of practice in efficient packing.

When you’re traveling for business, time is of the essence. Eventually, you’ll hone your travel routine down to an exact science. This fine-tuning happens for all parts of your business travel, including what business travel gear to pack .

Light and Fleet = Smooth and Efficient Business Trip

Bringing just what you need and cutting out the extra stuff is a fine balance to achieve. Extra baggage weighs you down when you’re catching a late-night Uber to your hotel, running for a tight flight connection, or unpacking a large bag at your hotel.

Wondering what business travel gear is best for your next business trip? We asked business travel veterans for their picks:

Choosing a Bag

Frequent business travelers know the time-savings in carrying on versus checking a bag. It means the difference between catching an Uber downtown to lead a meeting, versus waiting endlessly at the baggage claim for your suitcase — the last one to emerge from the airplane’s depths.

You Need a Backpack Designed for a Laptop

If you’re traveling for business, you need a designated business backpack for your laptop. The Setout Duo includes a Laptop Backpack, but if you’re traveling with rolling luggage , it’s even more important to add the right kind of bag to accommodate your office setup.

business travel fashion

Tortuga Travel Backpack

My favorite business trip carry on is the Tortuga Backpack 40L .

This bag has a lie-flat laptop compartment that means you won’t have to take your computer out for the TSA. The clamshell-opening means my clothes stay organized and nicely folded. Because it’s a backpack maneuvering through an airport is a breeze.

With this bag, skip waiting in line for a slow-moving escalator or noisily jumping wheels over stairs.

Tortuga Laptop Backpack

Tortuga Laptop Backpack

Business travelers need a laptop backpack that’s designed for an airplane, not a classroom.

The Tortuga Laptop Backpack is a versatile secondary bag with considered details for air travelers. Slide it under the seat of most airplanes and carry all your electronics, chargers, a change of clothes, and your in-flight essentials.

It’s the perfect companion to a duffle bag or rolling suitcase.

Choosing Headphones

This section is easy. Get yourself a pair of…

business travel fashion

Bose noise-cancelling headphones  ($349)

These bad boys are the reigning king of stellar headphones to block out the noisy world and immerse you in a music world.

As Jared says,  “They’re comfortable for very long periods of time and overall good sound. The noise canceling blocks out the sound of the engines and the screaming kid that is, invariably, directly behind you. That, and nothing says ‘don’t talk to me’ like a big pair of headphones.”

business travel fashion

Choosing a Laptop or Tablet for Business Travel

business travel fashion

Lenovo Yoga $1299+

This laptop flips into a ready-made tablet. It’s lightweight, powerful, and ready to tackle any business travel situation.

Kris says,  “I love this computer because it’s super powerful and very, very light which is important when traveling all the time. The last thing I need is a big heavy laptop to add to my already heavy load. Plus, it flips around to be a tablet.”

business travel fashion

Macbook Air $1099+

Lightweight with a battery life lasting 12+ hours, this laptop is ready to hit the road and be your best business travel gear companion.

The Mac is Jennifer’s best friend on the road.  “I love it; everything, including the cord is compact and easy to store.”

Rachel agrees,  “Macs all the way! Apple is easy to carry, has all the applications I need to get work done and offers different sizes for laptops that work well while traveling.”

business travel fashion

Galaxy TabS6 ($479+ / $649 w/ keyboard case and stylus)

The newest Galaxy S6 Tablet is a productivity machine for creatives and digital nomads alike thanks to a few key features that Samsung just does better than the competition.

  • Stunning mobile screens
  • Productivity tools like the S Pen

The AMOLED screen on the Galaxy S6 is one of the best mobile screens on the market. The S Pen magnetically attaches to the side of the tablet for travel-friendly packing and easy use. And if you’re a stylus user, you’ll be thrilled with the increased Bluetooth functionality.

The keyboard (with a trackpad!) is slim and easy to type on. This tablet is lightweight, boasts 15 hour battery, and includes a micro SD card for removable expandable storage. It’s a great tool for remote work on the go.

business travel fashion

iPad Pro ($799+)

The iPad Pro is simply leaps and bounds better than the iPad Air 2. When you’re trying to actually work on a tablet, you need something with USB-C ports (now you can plug in a HD, memory stick, or other accessory!).

The best part is thanks to the Apple Chip and iOS 13, the iPad Pro is actually more powerful than the base models of the MacBook and Macbook Air. Seriously. The iPad Pro is a beast. Add the keyboard folio case and you’re ready to get work done without even having to pack a laptop.

business travel fashion

Best Travel Keyboards

Getting work done on the go can be a pain if you don’t have the right setup. Sometimes all you need to do is bang out a few emails or drafts at the coffee shop or on a short flight. Booting up your laptop for a quick work session is fine, but you can also get a surprising amount of work done on your phone with the right Bluetooth travel keyboard.

Just connect to your phone or tablet and you’ll be floored by how much you can get done with a full-size keyboard. You might even be able to leave the laptop at home. Even if you’re addicted to your laptop, a good travel keyboard can help you set up a mobile workstation with a dedicated monitor or even a laptop on an ergonomic stand so you don’t hurt your neck and wrists staring at a poorly positioned laptop.

No matter how you work on the go, these lightweight portable travel keyboards will quickly become a staple of your remote office setup .

business travel fashion

Nulaxy Bluetooth Keyboard w/ Leather Cover ($21)

Thanks to the cleverly designed leather case that folds out into a stand, this travel keyboard is a one-stop mobile office. Simply open up the protective case to create a felt lined stand for your phone or tablet, connect to your device, and type like you’re on a desktop PC.

The keys are quick and responsive with no noticeable lag time, and this full-size keyboard even features number keys, arrows, and all your favorites from your keyboard back home. It’s a seamless transition to a bluetooth typing experience. After a few days you won’t want to go back to a wired or fixed keyboard.

But the best part about this keyboard is how well it travels. The case is great for keeping out dust and debris, and the battery life is rated to work for 40 straight hours and lasts for 60 days in standby mode. 60. Days.

business travel fashion

Logitech Keys To Go ($69)

For an even slimmer, more stylish travel keyboard, check out the Logitech Keys To Go bluetooth keyboard. Designed by the pros at Logitech (they’re a big deal in mobile travel accessories), this keyboard is everything you need and nothing you don’t.

This travel keyboard can connect with practically any device (including smart tvs) and comes with a whopping 90 day standby battery rating, so you don’t have to worry about charging it all the time like your other devices. And it’s “spill proof” meaning you can type with impunity at the coffee shop.

Enjoy natural keyboard movement (you’ll feel like you’re typing at home) without the click clack sound of other travel keyboards. That’s a big deal when you’re working in a quiet space or cafe. You don’t want to be “that guy” banging away in the corner.

business travel fashion

Logitech Slim iPad Pro Keyboard ($119)

If you’re rocking the new iPad Pro (congrats), you need a travel keyboard that can keep up with this mobile workhorse. The Logitech Slim iPad keyboard delivers all the functionality and portability you need to turn your iPad into the (almost) laptop that it is.

Long battery life, seamless integration, three modes (sketch, write, and read), and even backlit keys for working at night or dark planes, this keyboard has it all. It even has the Apple shortcut keys (like volume and brightness) so you don’t have to swipe around for settings and other features.

business travel fashion

Portable Power

You’ve boarded your plane, pulled out your laptop for some uninterrupted working time… only to find your battery drained and laptop dead. This scenario is where a portable power device sweeps in and saves your day.

business travel fashion

MOGICS Power Donut ($50)

A power strip that works in 150 countries. It has 5 US outlets and 2 USB outlets for all your device-loving needs. This power strip is a must-have for your business travel gear list.

In business travel gear, this portable power device is Kris’ favorite.

business travel fashion

RAVPower ($50)

With the ability to charge two tablets at one or a iPhone 7 almost 4 times this is a power beast. Mike really likes this power block because of its large capacity, but it’s a bit bulky.

business travel fashion

RAVPower Luster Mini  ($11)

A super-charged powering station the size of a pen. With 4,000+ reviews and 4.5 stars out of 5 on Amazon, meet your smartphone battery-saver in a pinch. But don’t expect it to power your laptop; it doesn’t have that kind of capacity.

Best USB Chargers and USB Hubs for Travel

USB hubs and travel wall chargers are one of the most asked about pieces of travel gear—and for good reason. Your device is only useful if it’s charged and ready to go. So here are some of the best options for keeping multiple devices charged while traveling.

business travel fashion

Anker PowerPort Atom PD1 GaN 30W Wall Charger ($21)

Tired off lugging around your bulky laptop wall charger? So is everyone else. Now, thanks to a new substance called “gallium nitride” (GaN) you’ll never have to carry that dinosaur around.

GaN charging bricks replace the silicon in older wall chargers for power bricks that are far more efficient and less than half the size. And they don’t heat up like traditional wall chargers.

These USB chargers pack enough power (30W-60W) to charge your phone and your laptop. Yup, you can now pack a single, small wall charging unit that’s universally USB-C compliant to charge your laptop, phone, and all your other travel gear. And it’s only $20.

The future is here, and it’s the size of a golf ball. And if 30W isn’t enough power for you (laptops tend to use a little more), RAVPower just released a 61W GaN USB wall charger that can recharge your Macbook in under 2 hours (that’s super fast), and another ultraslim folding-prong 45W GaN USB-C wall charger that’s perfect for minimalist travelers.

business travel fashion

Anker Dual USB-C / USB-A 60W GaN Wall Charger ($43)

If you want to dip your toe into the GaN wall charging pool, but still have a few older micro USB devices or traditional charging devices (like some Bluetooth headphones ) this mixed 60W fast-charging USB travel charger is perfect.

Use the state-of-the-art GaN USB-C port to charge your phone or laptop (it does both!) with 45W fast-charging and still get 15W of power to the second USB-A hub for a bluetooth keyboard or your headphones. All the functionality of a multi-purpose dual USB wall charger in a tiny package that lets you leave the laptop charger at home.

business travel fashion

Anker Quick Charge 4-Port USB 43.5W Wall Charger ($28)

If you (and a partner) are traveling with a few devices each, this four-port USB wall charger will satisfy all your power needs in a slim design that fits into any organizer (the prongs fold into the device).

43.5W of power is officially in the fast-charging range, which can deliver USB 3.0 fast-charging to compatible devices. That means you can charge most phones to 80% in just 30 minutes. No more sketchy overnight charging in the hostel or common room. Juice your phone up and hit the road in under an hour.

business travel fashion

Dual USB Wall Charger ($12)

If you don’t need or even care about fast charging and GaN tech, at least snag a travel sized USB wall charger with dual USB ports that features folding prongs for the smallest possible packing footprint.

business travel fashion

Universal Travel Adaptor with Dual USB Ports ($13)

If you’re traveling abroad, don’t forget your universal travel adaptor. And make sure you get one with built-in USB ports so you don’t have to lug around an additional wall charger.

Yes, this is bulkier than modular travel adaptors, but having one single piece means you won’t lose (or have to pack) tons of little parts, and ironically, the larger unit actually holds in foreign outlets much better than smaller flimsy adaptors. Foreign outlets are often in weird places (not near the floor). It’s nice to have an adaptor that won’t fall out when you plug your laptop in.

business travel fashion

Men’s Business Clothing

The best way to make sure you can pack light, look great, and be prepared to transition from business to casual on the road is to develop a  capsule wardrobe . A few, carefully chosen, items that serve multiple purposes and layer well are the key to simplifying your business travel wardrobe.

Business Travel Shirts

A nice merino wool t-shirt is a great casual staple for taking meetings and taking on the town. They don’t wrinkle, and honestly, paired with Bluffworks travel chinos or another pair of travel pants , you’ll still look professional even without a collar.

Spring for shirts that:

  • Don’t wrinkle
  • Or don’t show wrinkles

Jared likes higher-end  Tommy Hilfiger shirts  as they aren’t prone to wrinkling or shrinking. Plus, they’re a good quality, last a long time, and look good in a business or casual setting.

Mike recommends versatile shirts that can be used with a suit and jeans, such as oxford shirts.

Above all: Avoid using the hotel’s iron if you can. Many irons have rust built up inside.

Great non-wrinkle shirt brands:

  • Brooks Brothers Wrinkle Free Travel Shirt  ($92)
  • JC Penney Stafford  ($36)
  • Ministry of Supply  ($115):  Andrian Iliopoulos of The Quintessential Man  sums it up nicely: “great quality and fashionable shirts with high performance in mind.”

Business Travel Pants

Wouldn’t it be great to have a pair of sweatpants that everyone mistook for dress pants? Not to wear to the meeting, mind you, but for the evening at the hotel bar?

BetaBrand Dress Pant Sweatpants  ($48) are those pants.   “At first glance they appear to be a sharp pair of chinos or wool trousers. But upon closer inspection, you notice that they are made out of sweatpant fabric (“French terry”), which is soft, warm, and stretchy,”  says Chris McGinnis of  TravelSkills

The key feature for business travel pants is wrinkle resistance. You want to be able to pull those bad boys out of your bag, throw them on, and be standing at the front of a room giving your presentation looking polished without wrangling the hotel iron and broken board.

Try these on for size:

Western Rise Evolution Travel Pants ($149)

These ultra stylish, rugged travel pants are disguised as something you could wear to the office. The slimmer fit is perfect for exploring chic cities, yet the durable stretchy nylon blend is designed for hiking and climbing. The true, do everything pants.

Bluffworks Travel Chinos ($125)

The original travel chinos (and the new stretchy Ascender version) are one of Tortuga writer, Shawn Forno’s favorite go-to travel pants for long haul trips.

I’m currently on a one-year Around The World trip, and the Bluffworks Ascender Travel Chinos are literally the only pants in my backpack. The interior zipper pockets keep my stuff safe, they’re stretchy enough to rock climb in, and still somehow fancy enough for the occasional meeting or co-working space day. They’re my only pants for an entire year.

business travel fashion

Best Business Travel Clothing for Women

Layering shirts.

business travel fashion

Everlane Cotton V-neck ($15)

Everlane creates fantastic shirts (like this super-soft one or this stretchy tank ) that dress up or down easily. Take them into a conference and afterwards, whip off your blazer and head into a speakeasy for a cold old-fashioned. You won’t feel out of place one bit.

Best part about Everlane? They’re committed to treating their workers like humans and radical transparency about their prices (aka not jacking up the price on a simple t-shirt).

business travel fashion

Bluffworks Threshold T-Shirt ($45) *coming soon*

This t-shirt ticks all the must-have’s: breathable, super soft, wicks moisture, resists odors, wrinkle resistant, UPF 50+, quick-drying, and machine washable.

This is the shirt you’ve been lusting after. And until now, it never existed.

Seriously, need I say any more?

Best Women ’s Business Clothing: Collared Shirt

business travel fashion

The Essential Icon Shirt by Rochelle Behrens ($76)

As with so many awesome products, Rochelle invented this shirt to solve her own problem.

“I would always need to safety-pin my shirt at the button. If the shirt fit across my bust, it was too large everywhere else, and vice versa. I got so fed up, I could think of nothing else but how to solve that problem.”

Say bye-bye to slipping a camisole under your classic white collared shirt to avoid unwanted flashes between the bust buttons.

Frankly, this is the shirt I’ve been dying to own… but never knew it existed.

business travel fashion

Brooks Brothers Non-Iron Tailored-Fit Supima Cotton Dress Shirt ($98)

Ever pull out the hotel’s iron and find it’s unusable due to rust?

Yeah, me too. Not to mention: I hate ironing. Opt for a collared shirt that needs no ironing, like this highly-rated one from Brooks Brothers. Made from soft cotton, the fabric is treated to resist wrinkles.

So, you can get to bed earlier (or sleep in a little later in the morning) and not worry about looking like a hobo at your business meeting. Now we’re talking.

Best Women ’s Business Travel Clothing: Blouses

business travel fashion

Draper James Daisy Vine Popover Blouse ($48)

Dare to express your personality with this super-cute, yet still professional, blouse from Reese Witherspoon’s lifestyle brand, Draper James.

Pair it with trim black pants (see below for the best business ones) or a pencil skirt. Or, don a pair of worn jeans for a quick nightcap at the hotel bar. Your choice.

It’ll quickly become a staple in your business capsule wardrobe for its sheer versatility and ability to make you feel feminine and strong.

business travel fashion

Bluffworks Azores Blouse ($98) *coming soon*

This company knows what it’s doing when it comes to clothes: machine-washable, resists wrinkles, antimicrobial treated (no stink!), and an extra snap between the buttons to avoid awkward boob flashes.

Oh, and did I mention? It looks like luxe silk, yet it’s far easier to care for (see: machine-washable).

business travel fashion

Best Women ’s Business Travel Clothing: Blazer

business travel fashion

Crew Tailored Blazer ($248)

Available in petite, regular, and tall sizes, this crisp blazer from J. Crew is sure to be a new packing staple in your carry on . It scores a record-high of 4.9 stars out of 5 based on reviews.

Crafted from extra-fine fabric, it feels silky smooth against your skin. Plus, it’s made from Italian wool, so you’re warm in wintery-cold boardrooms and cool in the summer sun.

business travel fashion

Everlane’s Italian GoWeave Classic Blazer ($145)

Say: “wrinkle-resistant Italian wool.” You had me at “wrinkle resistant.” Anytime I can spend more time sneaking some time in adventuring during a business trip, I’m down.

This blazer lets you do just that, because you won’t be ironing a stupid blazer for 30 minutes. Instead, you’ll be out wandering the city before work starts back up in the morning.

And did I mention this blazer is effortlessly chic?

Psst – get $25 off your first purchase.

Best Women ’s Clothing for Business Travel: Pants

business travel fashion

Betabrand Women’s Dress Pant Yoga Pant (Boot Cut) ($62)

Crafted from stretchy, yoga-pant-like fabric, these pants move with you rather than against you. With their sleek tailoring, they’re perfect for business trips where you go from airport to conference room.

Best part? Your derriere looks well-crafted.

Being comfortable is important. Looking no-nonsense professional is important. If you can also maximize your assets, well, that’s a bonus.

business travel fashion

Aviator Jeans – Comfort Skinny ($125)

A pair of smooth, dark-wash jeans are a must-pack on my business trips. Because you never know when you’ll need the comfort of jeans with the dressed-up look of a dark rinse.

These jeans are perfect. Lightweight and stretchy, they have a zippered hidden pocket inside the rear right pocket that’s large enough for your passport . Yup, I tested it.

And those front pockets are generous, too, so you could skip bringing a purse or bag on your nightly excursion and adventure super light.

Because these jeans are black, I’ve worn them to business casual conferences and looked perfectly at home.

business travel fashion

Anatomie Skyler Pants ($225)

Alex from Travel Fashion Girl named these pants as her favorite travel pants.

“These pants totally rocked the comfort factor when I wore them on a plane and on long train rides in Europe. The fabric has an awesome amount of stretch which allows breathability and gives you plenty of room to move around with ease.”

Wash in the sink and these travel pants are dry within hours. Lightweight. Compact. Dress up or down. Fabric stays wrinkle-free. It’s a business-trip miracle.

Back to Alex: “These have ultra-thin fabric and take up a quarter of the space. It’s not sheer, though, and hides dimply skin imperfections that some light fabrics don’t hide. They fit easily into a slim packing cube and hardly weigh anything at all.”

Perfect Business Shoes for Travel

business travel fashion

Rothy’s ($125)

At one conference where I was speaking, I sat next to another speaker and spotted her cute flats. Naturally, I asked about them.

“They’re Rothy’s. A little pricey but so comfortable.”

Cute and made from recycled materials, these slip-on flats have boatloads of raving fans.

The company claims there’s “no break-in period with our shoes.” The reviews back up that claim, as one reviewer says, “The first time I wore them…8 hours later…still comfortable. Highly recommend these shoes.”

Perfect Little Black Dress for Business Travel

business travel fashion

Bluffworks Trevi Dress ($145)

I must admit: I’m a sucker for a classic sleeveless, A-line black dress. But finding one that travels as well as I do? Now, that’s another story… until this dress showed up.

Blessed with 2% spandex, this dress is comfy and sexy. And it’s made with moisture-wicking, wrinkle-resistant, and odor preventing. So you’re always cool, pressed, and non-stinky.

I think I’m in love.

Plus, it has 6 pockets (in a dress — gasp!), bra straps at shoulders so straps are secure, and machine washable. Talk about an amenable travel companion who is as ready for the board room as she is ready for a night out for drinks post-conference.

Workout on the Road

Hotels have gyms for a reason. Many business travelers use them. Pack some sweat-wicking shorts and shirt, and athletic shoes to take advantage of the hotel gym.

Hotels With the Best Gyms:

  • Hyatt’s StayFit  gyms resemble modern fitness facilities. Open 24 hours, work out with resistance tubes or order a YogaAway class on your room’s TV.
  • Westin  partnered with New Balance  to rent clothes and shoes for just $5. Skip packing your running gear but not your run.
  • Equinox   is expanding into fitness-oriented hotels with enormous gyms and indoor and outdoor pools. First hotel expected to open in 2018 in NYC.
  • TYRP by Wyndam  has fitness-specific rooms with equipment in the room, so no need to go downstairs to the gym.

Body Weight Workout

Break a sweat in your room with a body weight workout. Check out this one recommended by  Entrepreneur  . Or this  workout developed by  Shape Magazine   for ladies who travel.

Men, check out this  cardio body-weight workout  or this  body-weight one  by  Men’s Health .

Yoga Workout

When you want a good workout to stretch out the kinks from a long flight, go with yoga. Borrow a mat from your hotel’s gym or lay a bath towel down on the floor for your yoga space.

Catch live yoga class recordings with  Yogaia . (Or barre, core, or Pilates classes.)

Pilates Workout

Cassie from Blogilates  is taking the world by storm. Her upbeat attitude and killer playlist makes your Pilates workout fly by. Check out her  YouTube vidoes  to spotlight a specific body part or do a full-body workout,  like this one .

Resistance Bands Workout

Think of these slender elastic bands as a weight-lifting session in a carry on .

Fit Simplify’s resistance bands  come in five resistance levels. A workout guide is included with the bands, and extensive workouts are available online. Best part is these bands are slightly bigger than a deck of cards, so they take up barely any room in your bag. And they pack a punch on the workout scale.

business travel fashion

Frequent Business Travel Tools

Tsa precheck.

If you fly domestically, get  TSA PreCheck  to  access a speedier security line  where you don’t have to shed shoes or belt. Keep your liquids and laptop in your bag.

Welcome to security, oh, we’re done already? Fabulous. That’s what TSA PreCheck looks like.

“While I don’t recommend this for all travelers, I’ve consistently started arriving to the airport 20 minutes later when I’m flying an airline that participates in this program with absolutely no stress,”  says  Stephanie Wu of  Travel + Leisure .

Mike agrees:  “Get TSA PreCheck so you can breeze through security, but be willing to take the regular lane if the PreCheck lane is backed up. If the wait is half the time, it’s worth it to take out your laptop and take off your shoes.”

Global Entry

Global Entry  has all those benefits above from TSA PreCheck. Plus, you skip filling out blue customs forms or long waits in line at customs when flying internationally.

Your life is fleeting time, so live more with  Global Entry . (Sounds like a tagline, but that’s the truth.)

Cost : $100 (includes TSA PreCheck)

Good Headphones

Jared’s tip is easy: Get yourself  Bose noise-cancelling headphones . Seriously.

Business Travel Loyalty Programs

A good business traveler joins a  specific loyalty program  for hotel and flight and stays with that program, letting their loyalty points rack up. Typically, a company will have an agreement with a specific loyalty program or status-match offers for its employees.  Travel hacking  your business travel could mean  vacation travel for free  later.

Virgin America Elevate

US News just ranked  Virgin America as #5  on its best airlines loyalty programs. Now that Virgin joined forces with Alaska Airlines — US News’ #1 choice — your airline options just opened wide up.

With both programs, US News likes how easily you can earn a free flight, airline quality, and award flight availability. Meaning that the more paid flights you fly, the more quickly your miles stack up.

National Car Emerald Club

The ads starring Patrick Warburton are true. Conquer the wait at the car rental line with National Car Emerald Club.

Jared says,  “Walk past the counter, pick any car you want and drive off. Its the quickest, easiest, and prevents you from getting a minivan. I like the Cameros and Challengers. The points tend to add up very quickly for free car rentals.”

American Airlines

American Airlines is a favorite airline among business travelers, now that United has lowered it’s bar on quality and standards with Sub-Par Economy Tickets. Um, excuse me, I mean United’s Basic Economy fare.

Mike says,  “With airlines, they’re really all the same: You won’t get upgraded unless you’re on an unpopular flight or have super-ultra-diamond status. That said, I like that American Airlines’ program uses vouchers for upgrades on >500 mile flights, rather than automatic, so that you have a better shot if you’re lower-tier.”

Marriott is a beloved hotel among business travelers. At Springhill Suites or Residence Inn under the Marriott umbrella, kick back with extra space and kitchen amenities like microwave, mini-fridge, or fully equipped kitchen.

Mike says,  “For hotels, I liked Marriott because you have access to lounges at mid-tier versus needing higher tiers like at other hotel brands.”

And now that Marriott has joined forced with SPG hotels, your status is worth more — at both hotels.

Best Travel Credit Card

Chase sapphire reserve.

This credit card is made for frequent, business travelers. We’re talking about no international fees, points add up quickly, trip insurance, extended warranties, auto coverage for rental cars. For every $1 spent on travel and dining expenses, you get 3 points back, meaning your points add up quickly.

Oh, and you get free Priority Pass membership, and Executive Emerald Club level for National Car. Downside is the hefty annual fee of $450.

Chase Sapphire Preferred

NerdWallet listed  Chase Sapphire Preferred with its 2 points on every $1 spent on travel and dining expenses, and no foreign transaction fees — plus great travel insurance — makes this card a winner for a small annual fee of $95.

Other top mentions were United MileagePlus Visa and Southwest Visa.

business travel fashion

Travel Apps

Award wallet  (free).

Keep track of those miles and hotel points you’re racking up with this AwardWallet. Finally, see all your points and miles from travel loyalty programs in one place.

TripIt Pro ($49)

One app for all your travel needs and reservations. This app comes in two versions: free and pro.

Pro version features real-time flight alerts, including which gate your plane is departing from, and find out when a better seat is available on your flight. This app keeps you organized, no matter how tight you are on time. Speaking from personal experience, it makes you look like an airline god.

Order a car and know the exact fare ahead of time. Need I say more? Uber is your new best friend for business travel.

FlightAware

Track your flight with a live tracking map, flight delay notifications, and airport delays. Or just use the site to see when Harrison Ford makes aviator news as he pilots his plane.

Mike says,  “This app is great for watching your flights and getting info on the planes (so you can look up the seating chart).”

App for your fav hotel and frequent flyer airline

Jared says,  “It’s a lot better to know what gate you’re going to without having to look at a departure board. If your flight changes or if there is a delay, you’ll get a notification sometimes before the gate announces it.”

Business Travel Tips

Knowing the little hacks to make a travel day flow more smoothly, or your time in a hotel in a strange city feel more like home, makes a big difference in how enjoyable business travel can be. In addition to choosing the right gear, experienced business travelers recommend the following:

Flight Tips

With thousands of miles of butt-in-a-plane-seat, business travelers excel at the fine art of flight travel.

Here are their best tips:

Get Airline Status

“Collect your points and get status or sign up for a credit card that gives you status,”  says Jared who works at a large banking risk management company. He traveled about 60,000 miles in 2016.

“Status allows for priority boarding, upgraded seats. If flights are delayed, you tend to get better service on a dedicated phone line with a smaller wait time.”

Be Prepared

When booking your flight, be aware of what days you’re flying.

“I feel that picking your flight time and day of the week you’re flying is important,”  says Kris.  “Avoiding Mondays and Thursdays or Fridays, and flying later in the afternoons, will get you the best flights because the business travelers tend to fly those days the most.”

Window or aisle seat is an ongoing debate for travelers. Whichever one you prefer — I like the window, thanks — a good seat makes all the difference on a flight. With your airline status, you’ll have the option to pick your seat.

“Get status and maintain it,”  says Mike, an economist who traveled frequently at his last job with Deloitte.  “So you can board first and ensure overhead space, keeping space open for your legs under the seat in front of you. On long flights, sit in the exit row so you have lots of room. On shorter flights, sit as close to the front of the plane as possible so you can get off first.”

Next,  pack the essentials for your flight .

Kris brings:

  • Noise canceling headphones
  • Inflatable neck pillow to avoid uncomfortable neck cramps

Don’t forget to have your electronics charged before boarding to squeeze in some extra working time.

If You Check a Bag…

Pack a small personal item  with all your essentials, in case your checked bag is misplaced.

Jennifer Deane, who traveled for her last job at EMSI, recommends stocking this small carry on — like a briefcase or daypack — with your laptop, snacks, contact case and/or glasses, phone chargers, makeup, and any medications. In the event your checked bag doesn’t arrive at your destination, you’ll be a-okay.

When you spend a lot of time on business trips, your hotel room is your home away from home.

Get the Hotel App

Many hotels have smartphone apps, and these apps are a must-have business travel gear.

“Get the app on your phone, make check-in a lot quicker and easier,”  says Jared.  “I stay at Marriotts whenever possible. Once you get status with them, you have your own check-in line. So you can bypass everyone else.”

Prep the Night Before

Kris says,  “Getting everything ready the night before is a godsend for me. Sometimes, I’m not able to do this. But when I can, I try to steam all of my clothes, setup my bathroom items as soon as I get in my room. This is a time-saver for the mornings when you’re running late. Plus, you get to sleep in a little longer.”

Ah, Hotel Status

Sense a theme for business travelers? Attaining status with loyalty programs.  Get status and maintain it so you get room upgrades. Or have the spine-tingling power to select your own room.

Mike says,  “If you’re staying in a big city with tall, narrow elevators (like NYC) and you don’t get an upgrade (or don’t care) to have a high floor/view room, request a lower floor so you’re not dependent on old, slow elevators. If you’re dependent on them, you may be waiting 10 minutes for a ride down/up during busy times.”

Small Details

These are the small things that make a hotel stay more pleasant.

For Rachel Garcia, marketing manager at  infoedge LLC  and  founder of Leafy Tamale , her small details are early check-in and late check-out.

“This gives yourself time. Take advantage of the hotel amenities that are free. Commit to a hotel brand and stay consistently at it so you earn points and can utilize these for perks and discounts.”

For Jennifer, it’s about a relaxing view at the end of a long day.

“Make sure you’re not booked on the ground floor. A nice view can be super relaxing after a hard day, especially if it’s relatively close to something touristy or relaxing you can do in your free time like a river walk or a sushi bar.”

Travel Day Strategies

Dressing well, for comfort and style on a travel day, as well as packing your sense of humor are two keys to a smooth travel day. Think ahead and plan for the details.

Look Your Best

Borrow a page from the celebrity’s playbook is Mike’s tip.

“Dress up when you travel, not just to not wrinkle your suit, but because you’ll look good and people will treat you better. Seriously, a suit jacket with nice jeans makes you look like an important person. Even if it’s not as comfortable as sweats. The suit jacket’s inside pockets are way more convenient for putting stuff in than your pant pockets while sitting down on a flight.”

Keep Your Cool

After 145,000+ miles of travel in two years, Kris is pragmatic:  “Don’t get frustrated with air travel! Things happen, planes get delayed. Don’t lose your cool.  Be friendly with everyone when you travel. Traveling can bring out the worst in all of us. A little bit of kindness will go a long way,”

Gate Agents = Your New Friend

Mike’s approach is more hands-on.

“If you have a tight connection, you can ask the gate agent at the departing flight before the tight connection to put you on a backup flight in case you miss your connection. You will have to check into the backup flight if you miss your flight. Typically, you can do that on your mobile app or with the gate agent at the connecting airport.”

Keep Vital Items Close

If you checked your bag, Jennifer recommends bringing a small overnight bag in your carry on .  “In case, your flight is cancelled or delayed so you don’t have to sleep in a weird hotel, naked, with your day-old contacts.”

Select your business travel gear wisely to make your next business trip a raging success. Our recommendations are:

  • A well designed carry on bag like the Tortuga Travel Backpack
  • Opt for a lightweight and powerful laptop like  Lenovo Yoga 900  or  Macbook Air .
  • Choose a loyalty program (like Marriott or American Airlines), and stick with it; ask for special treatment with your status
  • Get noise-cancelling headphones like  Bose . Seriously.
  • Buy wrinkle-free clothes like men’s  Brooks Brothers Shirt  and women ’s  J.Crew shirt
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve or Preferred credit cards are perfect for business travel
  • TSA PreCheck: Get this
  • Workout with a  body weight workout ,  yoga , Cassie at  Blogilates  or  resistance bands

I’m headed into some more international business travel next month and this list is such a great reminder of what to add to my pre-flight checklist. I almost forgot to pack my noise cancelling headphones! Based on some other TFG articles and recommendations I now have the Lo & Sons OG 2 bag – and I think I prefer it to a weekender or backpack for business trips. It holds everything in a super organized way and looks chic for business travel.

Debra Moe

I need to buy the air tags TODAY! I am also checking out the other items, also! Thanks for a great article!

Suzette Romer

Great article! I’ve already purchased several items from this list. The eyeglass case, Away weekender and headphones are great!

For someone traveling three times in a month, this list of business travel essentials kept me top of the game. I ended up sharing this with so many of my friends and co-workers. Thank you for putting this together

I agree on the Swell water bottle and the packing cubes for sure! I’ve tried so many water bottles and always go back to Swell. They keep my drinks cold and never peak. Ever! These particular packing cubes are the most rugged I’ve found—and I have MANY brands. Don’t sleep on these!!

Natasha VR

I was just looking for something else and came across this list which reminded me to put my wrinkle releaser in my bag! Thank you!

5 workwear staples for women that are machine washable, wrinkle-resistant, and great for travel

Affiliate links for the products on this page are from partners that compensate us and terms apply to offers listed (see our advertiser disclosure with our list of partners for more details). However, our opinions are our own. See how we rate products and services to help you make smart decisions with your money.

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

Traveling for work can be the perfect storm of limited luggage space and an obligation to wear structured clothes in temperamental fabrics. If you don't have the time or the space to pack a mini steamer , this can pose a problem.

There are some tricks that can make it all easier: pack items in the same color scheme so you can mix and match, pick mostly dark clothes so imperfections are better camouflaged, and roll your clothes rather than fold them if you're worried about space (I swear by this trick).

But what really makes the difference is better, smarter clothes that work harder for you. They're wrinkle-resistant, machine-washable, breathable, comfortable, and don't lose shape after repeated wear. They're often made out of technical fabrics that look like more run-of-the-mill materials but perform 100x better.

I've rounded up five work wardrobe staples below, but in the form of their cooler, smarter, more new-age options. We try thousands of products throughout the year, and these are the style choices that have stood out the most for business travelers. With the right wardrobe, business travel can be as comfortable as your most well-worn sweatpants.

Below are 5 fantastic options for traveling for business in comfort:

Pants: slim leggings, aella.

business travel fashion

What to look for: comfortable, resilient materials that don't bag out after repeated wears, are machine-washable, breathable, and, if possible, are stain-resistant (since you likely won't have access to a washer and dryer, or enough time to send out dry cleaning).

What we think you'll love: Aella Slim Leggings , $175 (or most of Aella's pants, really).

Why: You really can't go wrong with a pair of travel work pants from Aella. The company was actually conceived because the founder, Eunice Cho, couldn't find stylish and flattering work pants that were cool enough for a day job at a high-end store in Soho and professional enough for business school at night. Aella is the solution, and its materials are all picked with three essential points for comfortable and easy-to-wear workwear in mind: stretch, machine-washability, and resistance to color fading.

They're a big favorite on the Insider Picks team due to their flattering, modern fit, smarter technical materials, and low-maintenance care. I've written a bonafide love letter to them before, as has fellow reporter Connie Chen . Our favorites are the Ankle Skinny  and  Slim leggings , both of which are a sophisticated twist on the legging. It will stretch without bagging no matter how many days you wear them, go through the wash without dulling in color or changing texture, and it remains spill- and water-resistant so you're always meeting-ready.

Other options to consider: MM LaFleur Foster Pant, $195 (bonus: they come with an adjustable hem. Full review here ).

Aella Slim Leggings in black or navy for $175

Shirts: easier than silk shirt, ministry supply.

business travel fashion

What to look for: wrinkle- and stain-resistant shirts that are breathable enough for layering without becoming too hot or claustrophobic. Must be machine-washable, flexible, and appear tailored.

What we think you'll love: Ministry of Supply  Easier Than Silk Shirt, $85

Why: Ministry of Supply is another company we love for their innovation. It was founded by MIT grads and frequently collaborates with NASA to make the sort of smart materials that look and feel better than traditional workwear. This shirt was born from dozens of interviews with women about what they hate and love in a dress shirt, and they came up with this not-quite-silk iteration. I've tried a lot of button-ups at Insider Picks, but this one in black is my favorite. It's super breathable, looks unbelievably sleek and slimming on, is machine-washable, and feels comfortable and polished all day. The material (a Japanese technical fabric that looks like silk) actually looks much more expensive than it is, and at $85 I can buy multiples. As time passes, I only love it more.  Read a full review here .

Other options to consider: Aella Silk Tee, $95

Ministry of Supply Easier Than Silk Shirt in six colors, $85

Shoes: day heel, everlane.

business travel fashion

What to look for: If you plan (or need) to travel in heels, you'll want a nicely cushioned and supportive footbed, a low block heel, and, if possible, an elasticized back to minimize chafing.

What we think you'll love: Everlane Day Heel

Why: This heel, inspired by the need for a heel you can comfortably walk all day in, inspired a 28,000 person waitlist when it first debuted. It has an elasticized back like a ballet shoe to eliminate that painful "break-in" period and the annoyance of sliding out as you walk, a rounded toe, a walkable 2-inch block heel, and a cushioned footbed that feels like memory foam. More than a few women on the Insider Picks team own a pair, and we each love them.

Other options to consider: Taryn Rose Filom ena Block Heel Pump, $259.90  (Taryn Rose is a bit more expensive, but they're all designed by an orthopedic-surgeon-turned-footwear-designer who makes super comfortable shoes that don't sacrifice style).

Everlane Day Heel in 15 color and material variations, $145

Dresses: the etsuko dress, mm. lafleur.

business travel fashion

What to look for: wrinkle- and spill-resistant fabrics that are machine-washable, breathable, and won't lose their shape after sitting for hours on a plane. Even better if the dress can look fitted without being anywhere close to tight.

What we think you'll love: MM. LaFleur Etsuko Dress, $195

Why: The Etsuko has been sold out and restocked over 20 times and has earned women's workwear startup MM. Lafleur over $3 million alone since its creation a few years ago. It's breathable, super comfortable, universally-flattering, and has enough give so as not to discourage you from running to make that connection ( which I can attest to from many almost-missed subways while wearing it ).

The Etsuko is effortlessly comfortable and professional. Instead of counting down the hours until I'd be home and could change into sweatpants, I often found myself getting home, cooking dinner, and lounging around in it. It's machine washable, appropriate year-round, and can transition from day to night well, so you get more mileage out of what you pack.

Other options to consider:  Ministry of Supply Kinetic Dress, $175

MM.LaFleur Etsuko dress in seven colors, $195

Blazers: kinetic blazer, ministry of supply.

business travel fashion

What to look for: wrinkle- and stain-resistant materials that can be crumpled up without looking like they were. Extra points for breathability and being machine-washable and water-resistant.

What we think you'll love: Ministry of Supply Women's Kinetic Blazer, $245

Why:  This blazer is made to move. Thanks to Japanese Primaflex polyester (a warp-knit fabric), it can bend and stretch easily, even though it looks and feels structured like a woven. The Kinetic blazer also uses your own body heat to release and relax wrinkles within fifteen minutes, so you can stash it in a bag or wear it all day and still look polished.

The material is also very breathable and has a water-resistant coating, so you won't have to worry about spills. Machine wash and tumble dry it for easy maintenance.

Other options to consider: Aella Single Button Blazer, $295

Ministry of Supply Women's Kinetic Blazer in navy, $245

Business travel clothes for women: how to pack with ease.

Going away on a business trip means packing efficiently , selecting items that hold up to the cramped confines of a suitcase or carry on bag. From being mindful of wrinkle-resistant fabric to making good use of packing cubes, we have tips to make travel for work a breeze. In this piece, you’ll explore business travel clothes for women — what to pack and what to look for in an on-the-go professional wardrobe.

What should you look for in business travel clothes?

For busy travel that’s more for business than pleasure, preparation is everything. Here you’ll discover what makes business clothes worthy of a business trip.

Wrinkle-free: rayon or polyester-blend fabrics

When traveling for work, you  want to look your best in a professional ensemble. That means free from wrinkles, a tall order when your clothes are packed tight and prone to some rumples in the fabric. Minimize  time spent ironing clothes the morning of a big meeting by packing naturally wrinkle-resistant fabrics. Materials like polyester or rayon  tend to wrinkle less than natural fibers, such as cotton or linen.   Plus, these materials are easily machine washable, so you can avoid a hefty dry cleaning bill if you need to send out your  laundry in a pinch.

Stretchy yet fitted

Pack clothes that are comfortable with a little give. In general, you want to be comfortable when you’re away from home, but since this isn’t a trip where your entire wardrobe is bathing suits and coverups, it’s best to get creative. So skip the fabulous pantsuit that may be flattering but a bit too stiff.

Versatile purse

With the right purse by your side, you can even travel by carry-on only . So invest in that bag that can take you from a weekend away  to a business trip abroad. When you have that carry-all bag, it can store your laptop and change of clothes for an overnight excursion. Our Gemelli tote  may be just the right fit, holding your essentials on the trip and serving as your standout bag once you’ve reached your destination.

Durable clothing and accessories

Another crucial factor is durability with the clothing and accessories that you choose to accompany you. Everything from your quality leather handbag  to the outfit you wear while traveling should be durable. If it favors utility with a fashionable bend, then you can conquer your business trip knowing that you and your wardrobe can handle anything.

Neutral colors

Opt for a neutral color palette  with your business travel wardrobe for maximum mixing and matching. Also, neutrals work well in a professional environment for a perfectly put-together appearance.

13 business travel clothes ideas

You know what to look for in the materials, color, and fit of your clothing items, but let’s take it a step further. Below are several ideas to get you started when packing for a business trip. With these staples, you can switch things  up without filling your bag with extras.

Black pants

Black business pants are a neutral-colored staple that makes an effortlessly polished  statement. Plus, you can re-wear them with other tops if needed. For black work pants that work well away from home, go for a comfortable option without sacrificing professionalism.

Long-sleeve blouse

A long-sleeved blouse or two (depending on the length of your trip) will go nicely with your black work pants. This can be an opportunity to work in color or an interesting pattern if the situation calls for it, or you can keep the blouse simple in an elegant cream color. With a blouse and pants, you already have one work outfit that translates well into your office away from the office.

Senreve Doctor bag

To complete your work ensemble, you’ll need a work bag, and Senreve’s Doctor bag  does the trick. Fashioned with high-quality Italian leather, you can fit up to a 12” laptop and still have room to spare. It features seven interior compartments and two exterior compartments for optimal organization, so you can ditch the boring briefcase and not sacrifice style for function.

A simple tee

Packing a basic white T-shirt for any trip is always a good idea. You can wear the shirt for a casual walk when you have some downtime on your trip, or you can save it as part of your travel outfit.

Cashmere trousers

Speaking of an outfit for when you’re off the clock, you’ll want something cozy to pair with your tee. They’ll give you a break from work mode while retaining the flexibility that denim rarely offers.

Rendered from the softest cashmere, our relaxed fit Cashmere Straight Leg Pant  is luxury reimagined. Designed with an adjustable drawstring waistband and convenient pockets, this piece allows for maximum comfort and flatters all body types. So give that T-shirt something special to work with.

Extra underwear and socks

You can easily roll underwear and socks to save space in your luggage when packing, so don’t skimp on these essentials. It’s a good idea to bring an extra pair or two when traveling if you run out and don’t have access to a washing machine right away. For long flights, include a pair of compression socks to support healthy blood flow .

Crepe knit top

When it comes to a wrinkle-resistant fabric, a crepe knit has you covered. They come in a variety of styles and cuts, so find the right business casual fit and pack a crepe top or two. They can increase your options for mixing and matching. Plus, they’re breathable, which is a bonus for being comfortable on a business trip.

Senreve Armonica bag

With Senreve’s Armonica bag , you’ll have a convertible, everyday bag for your business trip. Wear it as a crossbody, shoulder bag, backpack, or handheld for adaptability on the go. This secure bag features several pockets and inside compartments for efficient organization.  The bag’s interior has a zipper pocket, laptop band, five patch pockets, a key clip, and a pen pocket.

Polyester slip dress

The silk slip dress doesn’t bode well for wrinkle-free worry when away, but a slip dress made from a polyester blend is a great alternative. You can layer the slip with a sweater or blouse. You can try a belt to give more  shape to this dress, too. So you’ll have all of the flexibility of an on-trend slip dress without the worry of unwanted wrinkles.

Senreve passport holder

A passport holder, when traveling abroad, is a must-have accessory. To keep your necessities safe and secure, Senreve’s passport holder  is the perfect travel companion for storing your passport, ID, and credit cards. It’s durable without sacrificing style. Slip it into a secure compartment of your Senreve bag for safekeeping.

Including a black or blue blazer for a business trip will make you feel extra prepared for anything thrown  your way. A tailored blazer makes any outfit meeting-worthy. Drape it over your slip dress or wear it with your long-sleeved blouse and black work pants. There is nothing quite like the confidence a blazer exudes.

Pack  a silk scarf in a suitcase or carry-on without attracting wrinkles. And a scarf can add a little something special to any ensemble. No matter how you wear it, a scarf  opens up endless styling possibilities. Our Women of the World scarf  is the perfect fit for an added boost of confidence at work. It’s a mark of empowerment, drawing confidence from the powerful women who inspired the design.

Bracelet Pouch

Senreve’s Bracelet Pouch  is perfect for when you want to step out for a night away on business but don’t want to carry a big bag with you. It’s an elegant wristlet by night and a removable pouch for your crossbody by day. And the removable wristlet strap transforms into a leather bracelet, so you’ll have another multi-functional accessory to play with when working away from home.

What to Look for in Travel Business Attire for Women Over 50

Choosing travel business attire involves a thoughtful blend of comfort, style, and practicality. Here are some key aspects to consider when curating a wardrobe for your journeys:

Comfort Is Key

Prioritize fabrics that offer comfort and ease of movement, especially during long flights or extended periods of travel. Look for breathable materials like cotton, jersey, or blends that keep you comfortable throughout your journey.

Versatility Matters

Opt for versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched to create different looks. This ensures you’re prepared for various business engagements without packing an excessive number of items. A well-coordinated capsule wardrobe can be both stylish and efficient.

Read THE CAPSULE WARDROBE – A MUST HAVE EVERY WOMAN SHOULD BE UTILIZING .

Wrinkle-Resistant Fabrics

Choose fabrics that resist wrinkles, such as wrinkle-resistant blends, or fabrics like jersey and knits. This helps you maintain a polished appearance, even after spending hours on a plane or attending meetings.

Classic Silhouettes

Invest in classic silhouettes that stand the test of time. Tailored blazers, well-fitted trousers, and timeless dresses contribute to a sophisticated look that transcends fashion trends.

Neutral Colors and Prints

Stick to a neutral color palette for your core pieces, as they are easy to mix and match. Incorporate subtle prints for added interest without being too overpowering. This ensures a polished and professional appearance.

Layering Options

Pack layering pieces such as cardigans or scarves to adapt to different climates. This not only adds a stylish touch to your outfit but also provides practical solutions for temperature changes.

Comfortable Footwear

Prioritize comfortable shoes suitable for both walking and professional settings. A pair of stylish yet comfortable flats or low heels is an essential addition to your travel wardrobe.

Functional Accessories

Invest in functional accessories like a durable yet stylish travel bag, which should be spacious enough for essentials and possibly a laptop. A versatile scarf or statement jewelry can boost your look without taking up much space.

Adaptability for Day-to-Night

Choose pieces that can easily transition from day to night. This adaptability ensures you’re ready for business meetings during the day and social events in the evening without the need for a complete wardrobe change.

Personal Style Expression

While adhering to professional standards, don’t forget to inject elements of your personal style into your attire. Whether it’s a signature accessory or a favorite color, let your individuality shine through.

Remember, the key is to strike a balance between professionalism and personal comfort, creating a travel business wardrobe that reflects both your expertise and your unique style.

But choosing the best travel garment bag for your needs can be a challenge. There are a lot of options on the market, so we asked an expert about how to find the right one. According to Tumi creative director Victor Sanz, “Your garment bag should be sturdy, functional, and sleek. If you’re frequently traveling by plane, a garment bag that folds to fit carry-on requirements is essential.” He adds, “You want to find the size that will fit all your clothes without having to overfold them and will allow you to reach your destination in style.”

It’s also important to consider bonus features, like pockets and organizational compartments, and, as Sanz notes, “A crucial function is to ensure that you’re able to hang your garment bag when you arrive at your destination, so that you can prepare your outfits as easily as possible and to ensure that all your clothes are crisp.” Keeping all this in mind, we found the 12 best travel garment bags out there today. Once you start using one of these, you’re never going to go back.

MZ Wallace’s signature quilting isn’t limited to the brand’s totes, appearing here in garment bag form. The thin design is extremely lightweight, ideal for quick trips when you need to bring one to three outfits. There is even an exterior pocket for bonus storage.

Dimensions: 22" × 3" × 39"

Materials: Oxford, leather

What reviewers are saying: “I have been interested in a MZ Wallace garment bag for a while. It is perfect! Just right proportions and size. Thoughtful design and construction details.”

Tumi always delivers premium luggage that will last you over a decade, and this garment bag is no exception. Sanz says: “It’s foldable, with a sturdy handle for easy carrying, making it convenient and compact for every type of travel. I also love that it has several zipper pockets, so I can pack my toiletries and other travel essentials all in one bag. When I arrive at my destination, I hang it in the closet and I know that I will be ready to go.”

Dimensions: 15" x 22" x 6"

Materials: Ballistic nylon

What reviewers are saying: “This bag stores so much for a carry on. I was able to comfortably fit 2 suits and more for a destination wedding!”

This duffel has been receiving high praise ever since its release. A few of the reasons it’s so popular: The duffel is carry-on friendly, water-resistant, and has interior and exterior pockets. And those are only a few of its distinguishing features. Choose an original or compact size for the style that suits your needs.

Dimensions: 22" x 12" x 12"

Materials: Polyester

What reviewers are saying: “The Garment Duffel is a great purchase, especially for anyone in an industry that takes short frequent trips. I was actually able fit quite a bit more clothes than I had anticipated. Took the bag to work and my company bought 20 of them to give to customers. Great purchase.”

Longchamp’s iconic nylon and leather trim takes on a garment bag silhouette. The two-tone design exudes sophistication, with practical touches like a top carry handle, built-in hanger, and front zip pocket.

Dimensions: 23.25" x 41.25"

Materials: Nylon, leather

What reviewers are saying: “I bought this as a gift for my boyfriend who travels a lot and needed a nice garment bag particularly for his suits. This bag is perfect! It fits his suit as well as a few extra shirts. The fabric is an amazing, durable quality, and the leather details make this product look incredible.”

This garment bag is actually designed to fit inside of your carry-on, rather than serving as a stand-alone piece. The water-resistant exterior protects against spills, and exterior zip pockets hold small accessories. It gets the job done, while taking up the least possible amount of space.

Dimensions: 40" x 19"

What reviewers are saying: “I use this bag when I need to workout at work. I go from a suit to athleticwear in minutes.”

Looking for an affordable option that is available ASAP? Amazon’s garment bag holds up to three suits or dresses and boasts multiple zipper compartments.

Dimensions: 40" x 4" x 20.5"

What reviewers are saying: “I bought this bag in 2019 and it has held up incredibly well since then, performs all functions advertised at a great price value. I have taken it on many flights, buses and train rides and have never had an issue with fitting it in the overhead bin on both longer-haul flights and short budget-airline carriers.”

Hartmann’s garment bag adds contemporary touches to an otherwise traditional design. The result? A chic, useful travel accessory that will stand the test of time. The padded shoulder strap and multiple interior pockets enhance the convenience of this style.

Materials: Nylon

What reviewers are saying: “Hartmann was an anniversary gift from my work place, and I am still proud to own it 35 years later.”

Mark & Graham Commuter 2-in-1 Garment Bag

Another convertible duffel, but this time with a personalized touch. That’s right—Mark & Graham lets you monogram your duffel. With a plethora of zippered and snap interior and exterior pockets, this bag gets creative with its storage solutions.

Dimensions: 22" x 10" x 10"

This spinner-style garment bag makes navigating a chaotic airport easy. The ergonomic design has expandable capabilities, as well as various compartments, a hanger bracket, and a pocket for liquids.

Dimensions: 20.5" x 24" x 9.5"

What reviewers are saying: “It’s easy to maneuver and overall great quality and very neat design (many compartments and zippered areas).”

For golfers and non-golfers alike, Stitch makes a duffel that is water- and stain-resistant, and includes a hanger hook, shoulder strap, elastic shoe pockets, and webbed handles. You can even get it customized with your initials.

Dimensions: 22.5" x 11.5" x 12"

What reviewers are saying: “Love it! Fits into the airplane overhead bin, no trouble bringing it along as a carry-on bag. Very sturdy, zippers are tough enough. Shoulder strap is removable. My suit arrived in top shape using this garment bag. Highly recommended.”

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

business travel fashion

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

business travel fashion

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

business travel fashion

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

business travel fashion

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

business travel fashion

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.
