Fort Knox offers various outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, hunting, kayaking, and golfing. The post also has numerous parks, playgrounds, and sports facilities.

Unfortunately, the Fort Knox Bullion Depository is closed to the public and access is restricted to authorized personnel only. However, visitors can still see the exterior of the facility and take pictures in front of the massive granite walls.

A day trip to Fort Knox

What to do on a day trip to fort knox.

The Fort Knox MWR staff invited us for a visit to showcase all that Fort Knox has to offer to the public. It’s really like it’s own city but unique in its rich history and active military base status. There’s a lot of hustle and bustle around the base so it makes for an interesting visit because not only can you eat there and find entertainment, but you also witness the work that’s taking place on the base.  Let me tell you a little more about our visit and highlight some tips for you.

Tip: Get an annual pass. You never know when the moment hits that you want to go for a special event or to swim and if you already have the annual pass, it makes entry even that much easier.

Playgrounds

Tip: The playground by the amphitheater has a wonderful covered picnic area.  Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy!

Special Events

I was amazed to learn that there is such extensive programming on Fort Knox that is open to the public. I made the assumption that it is all just for military families but that is not the case.  They have a wide array of community events from outdoor movies to large festivals.  Just take a look at their community events page to keep tabs on events and on some of the program pages, they list the special events taking place at those locations like at the water park .

Tip: Follow their Facebook page because they will keep everyone updates about special events via social media.

There were amble chairs around and even some in the shade.  My children said that they enjoyed the obstacle course the best and I loved the zero-entry area for getting just a little wet to stay cool myself……without the full commitment of jumping in! Also, it is big enough to not feel crowded but at the same time, I could sit anywhere and see my kids all over the park – that’s nice and more relaxed than huge water parks.

Aquatics Center

The Anderson Aquatics Center is indoor so you can swim year-round. It is newly renovated, very nice. It has a GIGANTIC indoor pool……seriously, it’s HUGE. There’s also an indoor splashpad. During the summer months, there is an outdoor sprayground and snack shack as well. Passesfor non-miliary families are just $7 (2024), you can even rent the place out for large groups.

If you have family members that like to golf………….real golf……….the Lindsey Golf Course on Fort Knox is open to the public.  It’s a full 18-hole course with a grill, golf shop and driving range. It’s open seven days a week and the most expensive it gets for a round of golf is $35. I don’t know much about golf beyond the fact that golf carts are mighty fun but I think $35 is quite reasonable. So, even if you aren’t very good, at least you had a fun day riding around in the cart and you can say you golfed near the gold.

Tip: If you pick up one of the Fort Knox MWR magazines around Fort Knox, there will be a coupon in there for bowling.

They have a movie theater on base and they host a free movie once a month on a Sunday. Keep tabs on the calendar of events to coordinate your visit and catch one of these movies.  Otherwise, most of the time, this theatre is not open to the public.

Also, there’s a grill at the bowling alley that gets rave reviews. I noticed that there were some chain fast-food restaurants around the base for convenience and remember, there are great picnic areas near the playgrounds so you are welcome to bring your own food in to enjoy.  You can find other restaurants here .

Accommodations

Fort Knox does have a hotel on the base – a Holiday Inn – so if you are looking for a getaway, you can stay there because there’s plenty to do over the course of a few days!

Fort Knox is not far from Radcliff, Elizabethtown or Brandenburg so you can also consider staying in hotels in these areas if you are planning a day trip or longer to visit Fort Knox. Then, you can also enjoy what these other areas have to offer.

Visitors can reach the museum directly through the public parking off 31W. Alternatively, visitors may enter the installation through Brandenburg Station Road, Bouillon, or Wilson Road Gate and ask the guards for directions to the museum. NO WEAPONS ARE PERMITTED ON POST and the gate guards will not allow you to enter if you have a weapon with you. All gates require to show proper identification (required of everybody in vehicle over the age of 16), vehicle registration, and valid driver’s license. The vehicle is subject to search.

Handicapped Accessibility: Visitors must enter through one of the three gates (Brandenburg Station Road, Bouillon, or Wilson Road.) to utilize the handicapped parking spots immediately outside the museum door or park in the closer on post parking lot and avoid having to pass through the turnstiles of the outer public parking lot. This is advised for visitors in a wheelchair. Wheelchairs are available in the museum on request.

Weekdays are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Weekends and Holidays (October – April) 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Weekends and Holidays (May – September) 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Closed: Easter, Thanksgiving, December 24, 25, and 31 and January 1.

Patton Museum is also closed when Fort Knox is closed due to inclement weather. Museum is open to the general public and admission is free.

Guided & Self-Guided Tour Information

One of the key attractions at Fort Knox is the General George Patton Museum. This fascinating spot is home to a plethora of exhibits of great interest to casual and serious military fans alike. Unfortunately, they do not offer guided tours at this time. Self-guided tours are the typical means of exploring this institution. The WWII barracks exhibit is of particular note. Admission is free and opening hours are 9 am - 4:30 am, Tuesday through Saturday.

The Kentucky Bullion Depository is closed to visitors. US citizens with a valid ID can visit Fort Knox itself with a 5-day "fast pass." There is no need to pass through the visitor center as passes can be obtained online . The main visitor center is open from 6 am to 9 pm every day of the week. From here, you can obtain a 1-year visitor pass provided you are a US citizen aged 18 or older with valid ID.

Seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Holidays may have shortened hours. Closed: Easter, Thanksgiving, December 24, 25, and 31 and January 1.

Patton Museum is also closed when Fort Knox is closed due to inclement weather. Museum is open to the general public and admission is free.

The Best Things To Do In Fort Knox, Kentucky

Fort Knox, located right in the center of Elizabethtown and Louisville, happens to be a base of the US Army. Fort Knox is also the home of the Kentucky Bullion Depository of gold that is owned by the US Department of Treasury. It houses about 147 million ounces of gold. No visitors are allowed in that part of Fort Knox. Nevertheless, Fort Knox still houses a large military community. Whether you’re stationed in Fort Knox or just visiting, there are lots to do around this area.

Elizabethtown

Saunders springs nature preserve.

Get back to nature in this park. There are plenty of views, hiking trails, and picnic areas. There are walking paths for all ages. As of 2018, it is still a free attraction.

Swope’s Cars of Yesteryear Museum

Take a 30 minute drive to Elizabethtown to check out this fun museum. The Swope’s Cars of Yesteryear Museum features vehicles ranging from the early 1900’s to the 1960’s in a variety of makes and models in both original condition and restored condition. It’s perfect for any car enthusiast.

Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area

Go camping near Fort Knox at this recreation area. There is a charge to go in. There are trails to run or walk with view of the Ohio River (and the creek of course). You can also do some fishing in the creek or try out the Frisbee golf course.

Boundary Oak Distillery

If you’re a fan of bourbon and whiskey, take a trip to this distillery. You can do a tour as well as a tasting. Bring home some of your favorite spirits later. This attraction is perfect for those who are 21 and up.

If you are military or know someone who is military affiliated, visit Fort Knox Army Post for some guided recreation is skiing, snowboard, hiking, or visit the Anderson Indoor Aquatics Center for some pool time.

Visit the General George Patton Museum

Dedicated to General George Patton, this Museum exhibits a number of personal artifacts, clothing, and effects that the namesake owned during his life. It also features bigger relics of his everyday life such as an office van. The reason why he is so popular is that he was a distinguished member of the Tank Corps, with exceptional services in the WW1 and WW2.

Fort Knox Water Park

The summer season in Fort Knox sees an influx of visitors to the Fort Knox water park. This park sees thousands of visitors every week during the summers. With plenty of water slides and pools, it is a perfect way of relaxing yourself. Apart from that, it also offers areas for a picnic with snack bars and a very relaxing resort-like environment.

Mini Golf at Falls Landing

There is a magnificent 18 holes course at Falls Landing. You will find an extremely fascinating and challenging round of mini golf at this place having a number of complex rock formations that prevent the ball from being swept away into streams. Overall, it adds great excitement for players. There are a number of packages that visitors can choose from that includes a tour of the nearby Fork Knox water park together with an exciting mini golf experience.

Bridges to the Past

Do you want to go back in time? If yes, then consider paying a visit to the Bridges of the past. This place offers a self-guided tour to visitors through a valley that appears as it it is still existing in the 19th century. This place is literally designed in the past with stone bridges and trickling streams.

Churchill Downs

This beautiful racetrack has been the home of the Kentucky Derby since 1875. This horse racetrack is rich in history so there’s plenty to explore beyond the races. Take a visit to the Kentucky Derby museum while you’re there.

Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory

At Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, experience history-in-the-making as you stroll through the actual factory where world-famous Louisville Slugger bats are created. Take the tour, see the largest baseball bat in the world, and you can also create your own personalized bat.

Louisville Mega Cavern

A 40 minute drive from Fort Knox is Louisville which is home of this mega attraction. The cavern holds the world’s ONLY underground zipline adventure tour, a ropes challenge course, and a bike park.

Big Four Bridge

Walk or bike across the bridge that crosses the Ohio River, connecting Louisville, Kentucky, and Jeffersonville, Indiana. The views are definitely worth the visit.

Does Fort Knox’s gold really exist? And if it does, why can’t the public see it? That’s the exact question treasure hunters and sleuths have been asking for years. So, if a PCS to Kentucky is in your future, then you’ll have the chance to find out. Okay, not really because we’re pretty sure the DoD doesn’t let anyone see inside the vaults. But still – knowing you’re that close to America’s reserves has to count for something, right? Read on to find out everything you need to know about a posting to Ft. Knox, including the history of how the vault came to be. 

Soldiers and Army families probably know Knox best as HRC. It’s the post from which all orders are issued. So it’s no surprise then that the post is home to the Human Resources Command. HRC personnel are the career managers for all Army MOS’. Additionally, it’s home to the Army Recruiting Command and the Army Cadet Command. The post is named in honor of Henry Knox, Chief of Artillery during the Revolutionary war and first Secretary of War of the United States.

Just as notable, this Army post is the sixth largest in Kentucky. Knox comprises more than 100,000 acres and stretches over three counties. Fort Knox has also been one of the most important military installations in the U.S. since the Civil War. Speaking of the Civil War, here are 12 surprising facts about the conflict you might not know. 

Ft. Knox Location

Fort Knox is located between Elizabethtown and Louisville. It’s about 25 miles south of Louisville. It straddles Bullit, Hardin, and Meade counties. Because of its size, Ft. Knox is certified as a city in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. 

Traveling by car from the Louisville International Airport: Take I-65S to the Gene Snyder Freeway West (KY 841) until you reach the 31W Fort Knox exit. This exit will take you to the entrance gates of Fort Knox.

Transportation

Depending on where you’re coming from, it might be a fun adventure to do a DITY PCS and drive yourself to post. Of course, if you’re coming from Sill or JBLM, you’re in for a long ride. 

Flying is probably the most convenient option. You’ll fly into the Louisville International Airport. Expect travel from the airport to post to take about half an hour.

There are three gates at post.

Main Chaffee Gate is 24/7 and is the site of the Visitor’s Control Center.

Brandenburg Gate is open Monday through Friday 0600 – 1300, closed on holidays and training days

Wilson Gate is open Monday through Friday 0600 – 1300, closed on holidays

Mission and Units

The main mission at Ft. Knox is to recruit, train, and support warfighters for the challenges of the twenty-first century. 

Ft. Knox boasts a diverse collection of missions and units. It’s home to the Army Human Resource Center of Excellence. 

Units currently stationed at post include the 3rd Brigade Combat Team 1st Infantry Division. The Big Red One, as the 1st ID is known, is the oldest continuously active division in the Army. 

Other units include the 3rd Sustainment Command, and the 19th Engineer Battalion. You’ll also find the 4th Cavalry Brigade, First Army Division East, the 95th Training Division, the 113th Band, and the 84th Training Command.

Ft. Knox History

This hybrid Treasury Department-Army installation can trace its roots back to 1918. That’s when the War Department leased 40,000 acres of land from the Commonwealth of Kentucky to conduct artillery training. 

In 1932, the 1st Cavalry Regiment arrived at post and remained there until 2011. That’s when the Base Realignment and Closure commission merged the Armor Center and the Infantry Center and relocated both to Ft. Benning, Georgia as the Maneuver Center of Excellence.

Ft. Knox served as an important Navy testing site during the spring and summer of 1942. An all-wood mock-up of a Landing Ship Tank well deck was created to allow naval architects to track airflow and test vent systems. The building still stands at Ft. Knox and it’s one of the few remaining WWII structures on post. 

For two years during WWII, Ft. Knox was a POW camp. From 1944 until 1946, it housed Italian and German POWs. 

The Patton Museum opened its doors in 1949 and showcased armored vehicles associated with Gen. Patton. When the Korean War started, trainers from Ft. Knox formed the 72nd Tank Battalion and deployed to fight in the conflict. 

Then, in 1992 the Recruiting Command Headquarters relocated to post. In 1996, the last original M1 Abrams tank retired from Army service at a ceremony at Ft. Knox. 

These days, Ft. Knox is exclusively focused on career management of America’s next generation of Soldiers. 

Things to Do Around Ft. Knox

Naturally, you’re going to want to get as close to the Knox gold as possible. Kidding, of course. Don’t worry – there’s plenty to without trying to get into the gold depository.

Most of the classic Kentucky dishes you might associate with the state got their start in Louisville. So being stationed in Ft. Knox means you’ll have access to some of the most famous Kentucky dishes! You might want to try benedictine, a sandwich spread made from cream cheese, mayo, and cucumber. Of course, if you’re in Louisville, you’ll have to stop by the Brown Hotel for a Hot Brown sandwich. Derby pie is another region favorite, as is wilted lettuce. If you’re looking for sweets, try the apple stack cake. Legend has it the cake developed as a replacement for an expensive wedding cake for early Appalachians. 

Nearby Louisville and Elizabethtown offer plenty of excellent recreation options. Be sure to visit the Kentucky State Fair. This 11-day event attracts over half a million people to the Bluegrass State. It’s held in Louisville and has been a Kentucky staple since 1902. 

Bourbon fans, don’t skimp on the Kentucky Bourbon Festival , held in Bardstown, Kentucky. The “bourbon capital of the world” has been distilling spirits since 1776.  

Of course, the Kentucky Derby is an institution all on its own. Book tickets early as the event always sells out. 

On post, don’t miss out on seeing the Gen. George Patton Museum! It showcases the history of the Army’s Cavalry as well as Patton’s career. 

Ft. Knox Housing

Unaccompanied housing is available to enlisted ranks E-1 to E-5. All single service members must report to their unit to be assigned barracks space.  

As soon as you receive orders, call the Housing Management Office. The HMO can help with community referrals, relocation assistance, and more. The office can also place you on a waiting list for on-post housing. 

Military housing is privatized at Ft. Knox. Lendlease owns and manages all housing on post. Knox Hills offers 20 neighborhoods with large floor plans to accommodate all family sizes.

Has anyone been inside Fort Knox?

It’s really, really secure. So unless you’re there on the bequest of the Treasure, you’re not getting in. In fact, not much is known about what the inside of the repository is even like inside . 

Is it possible to break into Fort Knox?

Probably not. The United States Bullion Depository is surrounded by a steel fence and the building is made of concrete-lined granite and reinforced with steel. It’s equipped with the latest and most modern protection devices.

Best attractions to see while visiting Fort Knox

If you’re heading to the Holiday Inn Express® Newgarden Inn on Fort Knox and are looking for some activities to do on your trip solo or with your family, keep reading! Full of military history, and just a short drive from Louisville, there is plenty to do to fill your days.

General George Patton Museum of Leadership

Open Tuesday-Sunday, 9:00am to 4:30pm

This museum was created to honor the prolific military career of General George Patton as well as showcase memorabilia from his childhood in California, to his participation in the 1912 Olympic Games.

Not only does the museum honor General Patton, but also has an exhibit dedicated to those starting their military careers in the ROTC. The items displayed help to showcase some of the ways that General Patton’s legacy of leadership continues to motivate and inspire Americans to this day. Admission is free to the public.

Tioga Falls Trail

Open daily during daylight hours

This hiking trail is a combination of natural beauty and nineteenth century history, ending in one of the only waterfalls in this area of Kentucky. Throughout the hike, you’ll see old buildings that were once part of Fort Knox, like guardhouses, outposts, and railroad stations. The trail takes about 2 hours to complete, and does have a few steep climbs, so use caution and proper hiking gear.

On occasion the trails are closed to the public as large military exercises from Fort Knox take place in the area.

Swope Museum

Open Monday-Saturday, 10:00am to 5:00pm

Are you looking for a piece of automotive American history? Swope Cars of YesterYear showcases 60+ cars from the 1900’s to the 1960’s, all restored to museum quality. From the 1914 Model T and the 1925 Pierce Arrow to classics like the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro and the 1956 Thunderbird, there’s something for every car enthusiast to enjoy.

The museum allows guests to admire the progression of these cars overtime, and admission is free to the public.

Louisville Slugger Factory and Museum

Open Monday-Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm and Sunday 10:00am to 4:00pm

About a 30 minute drive from Fort Knox is the Louisville Slugger Factory and Museum, which showcases the rich history surrounding the sport of baseball. “From the forest to the field, you'll follow the timber that's turned into hard hitting history,” as well as be able to see fascinating memorabilia and interactive exhibits.

Start with the factory tour, where you’ll see every part of the process that goes into turning a piece of wood into an official MLB bat. Also featured in the museum is the Signature Wall, featuring players who signed contracts with Louisville Slugger, and the exhibit showcasing Slugger players that went on to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The museum recommends purchasing advance tickets as the Factory Tour can sell out during peak times.

A spectacular event celebrating Fourth of July and support Soldiers and their families.

Summertime is synonymous with fun, music, and community celebrations, and Fort Knox Freedom Fest ’24 promises to deliver all of that and more. On Thursday, July 4, Brooks Field on Fort Knox, Kentucky, will come alive with festivities, as we invite the public to join us for an unforgettable evening of entertainment and patriotic spirit. This event will commemorate 248 years of freedom while paying tribute to the brave men and women of the Armed Forces.

Building on the success of past large-scale outdoor events, Fort Knox Family and MWR is proud to present a line-up of activities that will captivate attendees of all ages. One highlight of the evening will be electrifying live concert performances by the band Grafenburg, known for playing hit music and all your favorite tunes. As the music fills the air, families can revel in the Kids Zone, featuring an array of exhilarating inflatable slides, obstacle courses, and much more, providing endless entertainment for children. And to satisfy everyone's appetite, a diverse selection of festival-style food and beverages will be available for purchase.

A military Salute to the Nation will occur at 9 p.m. with the grand finale of the night, a jaw-dropping professional fireworks extravaganza, igniting the sky with a dazzling display of lights and colors at 10:05 p.m. It promises to be a moment of collective awe and wonder, celebrating the spirit of freedom and unity.

*Patrons are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets for seating.

Directional signs will guide visitors to the event venue once on post. Coolers, backpacks, and bags are subject to inspection. No pets or personal fireworks are permitted at this event.
