• Conversion Steps : Apply for a Visitor Visa in Canada, consider requirements and fees, apply with necessary documentation, secure an LMIA-supported job offer, explore alternative pathways without LMIA (if needed), and apply for a work permit from within Canada.

Even after enough job research, there are high chances that you won’t be able to get a job offer from a Canadian employer. Because an employer has to fulfill the LMIA Requirements to hire you, and not many employers are willing to sponsor temporary visitors.

• If you have applied for PR under Spousal Sponsorship, then you can apply for a work permit while you’re waiting for the decision.

3. Converting Visitor Visa to Work Permit in Canada

New temporary policy.

After you get a positive LMIA from a Canadian employer, you can apply for a work permit from inside Canada. On February 28, 2023 , IRCC announced that foreign nationals currently in Canada on a visitor visa and who have a valid job offer would continue to be able to apply for and receive a work permit without having to leave the country. The temporary public policy has been extended by two years until February 28, 2025.

After the temporary policy expires, you have to go through a process called Flagpoling . In this temporary, visitors must go out of Canada through the US border, apply for a work permit, and then re-enter Canada.

Using the flagpole process to activate a new Canadian work permit is legal. However, it is important to be truthful and provide accurate information during the process. Giving false information can lead to serious consequences. Please consult an immigration expert before attempting to flagpole or change your immigration status.

4. Interim Authorization to Work

We have discussed how to convert a visitor visa to a work permit in Canada. Now, let’s understand how Interim Work Authorization works. If you apply for a work permit in Canada while under visitor status, you must wait approximately 135 days to receive it. This means that you cannot work until your work permit is approved.

Visitor Visa checklist: Everything you need to apply and visit Canada

A visitor visa is needed to come to Canada as a tourist, or on a quick trip to visit family, or do business for individuals of many countries.

Anyone who is not a permanent or temporary resident of Canada (those with a work or study permit) will need a visitor visa to enter the country. However, citizens of certain countries do not need a visitor visa and can instead pursue an electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). eTAs are a more streamlined form or travel authorisation available to nationals of countries that have visa-free travel agreements with Canada. What is needed to get a Canadian visitor visa?

1. Complete the needed forms

Depending on whether you are applying inside or outside of Canada, you will need to fill in different forms. Those applying outside of Canada will require:

• Application for temporary resident visa (IMM 5257);
• Family information form (IMM 5707);
• Statutory declaration of common-law union (IMM 5409);
• Use of representative (IMM 5476)—Note this is only required if you have used the services of a representative, or if you are appointing or cancelling use of a representative; and
• Authority to release personal information to a designated individual (IMM 5475)—Note this form is only required if you authorise Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) or the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) to release information from your case file to someone other than yourself (i.e.: a representative or authorised relative).

2. Collect the needed documentation

In addition to the above forms, applicants for a visitor visa will need to following documentation in support of their request:

• Receipt of fee payment;
• A photocopy of the information page of your passport, including: the passport number, issuance and expiry dates, and your photo, name, issue date, and place of birth;
• Two photos meeting the requirements of the visa application photograph specifications . On the back of these two photos applicants must write their name and date of birth. If applicants are required to provide biometric fingerprints and photo they do not have to attach these photos;
• Proof of financial support, proving that you can support yourself and any family member accompanying you while you are in Canada;
• Photocopy of your marriage license or certificate (if relevant);
• Letter explaining the purpose of your travel;
• Photocopy of your current immigration status (if your country of residence differs from the country of citizenship listed on your passport, you must provide proof of legal status in your country of residence);
• Minors travelling alone or with one parent must provide custody documents or a letter of authorisation from the other non-accompanying parent of a letter of authorisation signed by both parent or legal guardians; and
• Any other additional documents required by the responsible visa office in your region.

Note that application forms completed online must be completed and validated with the generation of a barcode. If completed on a computer, these barcodes will be automatically attached to the immigration forms, otherwise they must be printed and placed at the top of an application if applying by paper.

How to pay required fees and prove fee payment to IRCC

There are two kinds of fees that applicants for a visitor visa may need to pay. These are application processing fees, and biometric fees. Those who do not need to provide biometrics may be exempt from the second set of fees—find out if you need to give biometrics here .

Application processing fees for visitor visas are $100 CAD per person, and $500 CAD for a family (five or more people).

Biometrics fees on the other hand are $85 CAD per person, and $170 per family (two or more people).

These fees may be subject to change and cannot be refunded regardless of the decision reached on your application. In addition, the only accepted method to pay these fees is online.

After following the given instructions and completing the process, you must wait until an official IRCC receipt is issued with a barcode. Applicants are advised to save this file and attach a copy of it to their application.

How to provide proof of financial support

There are several documents that you can use to prove that you can support yourself and any dependents that accompany you while you are visiting Canada.

Some examples include cash, certified cheque, bank draft, or money order in a large enough amount to cover all reasonable expenses incurred during your stay in Canada.

In addition, written or verbal statements (which can be verified) can also be used, provided that they satisfy an officer that sufficient financial support from friends and/or family has been arranged and can cover reasonable incurable expenses during your stay.

How to write a “purpose of travel” letter

All foreign nationals entering Canada must be able to satisfy an officer at their time of entry that they have legitimate reasons to enter and reside in Canada. In the context of a visitor visa, this can often also include proving that you (the foreign national) will leave Canada once the period of your authorised stay expires.

In some cases, visitor visa applicants may also need a letter of invitation from a Canadian citizen or permanent resident .

Applying with family members

Visitor visa applicants wishing to bring their family with them on their trip to Canada must complete an application form for each family member. All applications may be submitted together online or at the VAC where you will send your application on paper. A single receipt may also be given for all included applications.

Lastly all family members and dependents must meet all requirements for temporary residence in Canada.

When planning a trip to Canada, it's crucial to understand the distinction between a Tourist Visa and an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). These two entry permits serve different purposes and apply to different travelers.

Tourist Visa

A Tourist Visa, also known as a Visitor Visa, is a traditional visa that allows foreign nationals to enter Canada for a temporary stay, typically up to six months. It's a document placed in your passport and is obtained through a Canadian consulate or embassy. Tourist Visas are typically required for citizens of countries that are not visa-exempt or eligible for an eTA.

eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization)

An eTA, on the other hand, is an electronic entry requirement designed for visa-exempt foreign nationals who are traveling to Canada by air. It's a simpler and faster way to gain entry clearance than a full-fledged visa. The eTA is electronically linked to your passport and is valid for up to five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It's crucial to note that the eTA is only applicable if you're flying to Canada; if you're arriving by land or sea, you won't need an eTA.

How do I Apply for a Canada Tourist Visa?

Step 1: Complete Online Application

Visit the official Canadian immigration website and fill out the tourist visa application form accurately.

Step 2: Gather Required Documents

Collect necessary documents such as a valid passport, travel itinerary, proof of funds, travel history, and a letter of invitation (if applicable).

What Documents Do I Need For a Tourist Visa?

How much does the canadian tourist visa cost.

A Canadian tourist visa otherwise known as a visitor visa or even a temporary resident visa costs CAD100 and allows you to stay in Canada for up to 6 months but is valid for ten years or until your passport expires. If it’s your first time applying for a Canadian visa, you must include your biometrics (fingerprints and photos) at an additional cost of CAD85.

Who is Eligible for a Canada eTA?

If you are a citizen of a country that is visa-exempt in Canada, then you are eligible for an eTA and you will need one to in order to get into the country. Those who are not visa-exempt will need to apply for tourist visas. The list of eTA eligible countries are listed in the table below:

How Do I Apply for an eTA?

Step 1: visit the official website.

Go to the official Canadian government website dedicated to eTA applications.

Step 2: Check Eligibility

Ensure you meet the eligibility criteria for an eTA. Most travelers from visa-exempt countries require an eTA to enter Canada by air.

Step 3: Gather Documents

Have your valid passport, a credit card, and your travel details ready.

Step 4: Start Application

Begin the online application by providing personal information, passport details, and travel plans.

Step 5: Answer Questions

Respond to a few questions about your health, criminal history, and travel purposes.

Step 6: Submit Payment

Pay the eTA processing fee using a credit card. The fee is typically lower than a traditional visa.

Can a Visitor Work in Canada?

While work and study permits are issued for performing or undertaking specific activities in Canada, a visitor visa has a broader scope. However, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t any restrictions on what you can and cannot do as a visitor in Canada.

Canadian work regulations apply to all individuals who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents. If you are visiting Canada with a Visitor Visa, there are crucial considerations to keep in mind before seeking employment in the Canadian labor market. That’s why, in this blog, we will provide a clear breakdown of what is permissible and what is not while under a Visitor Visa.

Under a Visitor Visa You Cannot…

1. stay permanently.

A visitor visa allows you to enter Canada and gives you temporary  legal status in the country. However, you only maintain that status for as long as your visa is valid. You cannot legally stay in Canada on a visitor visa that is no longer valid.

2. Work in Canada

You need a valid work permit to work in Canada. A visitor visa does not allow you to work in the country. So, you need to make sure you don’t engage in any commercial activity where you directly enter the labour market of Canada during your stay as a visitor.

3. Study in Canada

As a visitor visa holder, you cannot study in Canada except under the specific conditions listed above. In all other cases, you need a study permit to legally study in Canada.

4. Apply for a study permit

You cannot apply for a study permit from within Canada on the basis of your status as a visitor. You will have to initiate the study visa process after returning to your country. One exception to this rule that allows a visitor to apply for a study permit from within Canada is if he or she has a family member holding a valid Canada study or work permit.

But Under a Visitor Visa You Can…

1. enter and stay in canada.

Firstly, and most importantly, a visitor visa allows you to enter Canada. Once inside Canada, your visitor visa gives you temporary legal status to live or travel anywhere you want in Canada. When visiting Canada and considering it as a potential destination for work or immigration, you have the unique opportunity to compare cities, labor markets, job prospects, cultural experiences, and the best places to live. This firsthand experience allows you to envision what life in Canada could be like if you plan to immigrate in the coming years. Keep in mind, though, that this is a temporary status. Visitor visas can be issued for periods up to six months. The exact validity period of your visa will be determined by the officer who issues the visa. Once the validity period is over, your visa will expire and you will lose your legal status as a visitor in Canada.

2. Search for Work in Canada

While visitor visas are not meant to be used as a vehicle to find work in Canada, visitor visa holders are  not  expressly prohibited from searching for work while they’re in Canada. In fact, Canadian employers often prefer to meet candidates in person before they hire them, so searching for work from inside Canada may be more effective than trying to find a job from overseas. However, if you do choose to search for work while you’re on a visitor visa, you should keep the following in mind:

• Never conceal or falsify your reason for visiting Canada from an immigration officer.
• You will be expected to prove your intention to return to your country when your visitor visa expires irrespective of the outcome of your search for work.
• You will be expected to prove that you won’t work in Canada without a valid work permit.

3. Join a short-term course in Canada

Normally, you must obtain a study permit to be eligible to study in Canada. However, there are some rare exceptions that allow you to study in Canada on a visitor visa if you meet the following conditions:

• The school offering the course is  not  a Designated Learning Institute (DLI).
• The duration of the course or program is less than six months.
• The course is not a part of a longer program.
• You will complete the course before the expiry of your visitor visa.

4. Apply to extend your stay in Canada

Visitor visas can be issued for a period of up to six months. However, if you would like to extend your stay beyond the initial validity period of your visa, you can apply for an extension. Whether or not the extension is issued, and the validity period of the extension, are at the discretion of the immigration officer reviewing your application.

5. Perform business activities

While you generally need a work permit to work in Canada, you can carry out some business activities while on a visitor visa, as long as you do not directly enter the Canadian labor market. For example, you can:

• Purchase goods or services for a foreign business from Canadian businesses.
• Visit a business site.
• Receive training for product use, sales or other business functions under invitation from a Canadian business.
• Meet and interact with people for initiating and concluding a business transaction.

6. Apply for a work permit

Usually, visitors do not have the right to apply for a work permit while in Canada. However a temporary measure valid until the end of February 2025, makes it possible for visitors who receive a valid job offer while in Canada to apply to get a work permit while in Canada on a visitor visa.

Prior to this temporary policy change, those applying to work in Canada would typically need to apply for their initial work permit before they came to Canada. If they were already in Canada with visitor status when they were approved for a work permit, they would need to leave Canada to be issued their work permit. With this policy in place, leaving Canada isn’t necessary.

Our permanent residence fees are increasing

The fees for all permanent residence applications are increasing on April 30, 2024. Find out more about how the fees are changing .

You need to pay a fee for most of our applications. You can find information on fees in the application guides.

Family sponsorship

Citizenship, inadmissibility, other applications and services, temporary residence, electronic travel authorization (eta), international experience canada.

The International Experience Canada participation fee increased by $5 (from $156 to $161) on December 1, 2022.

Study Permits (including extensions)

Temporary resident permit, visitor visa (including super visa) or extend your stay in canada.

To be eligible to pay the maximum fee of $500 (in Canadian dollars):

• family members must all apply at the same time and same place
• your children must qualify as dependants

Work Permits (including extensions)

Work permit maximum group fee: To qualify, you must be a group of three or more performing artists and their staff, and apply at the same time and place.

If you also need visitor visas (temporary resident visas), you still need to pay for them individually. For visitor visas, the group fee only applies to families.

Permanent Residence

Business immigration.

These fees apply to:

• Quebec business immigration
• Self-employed people
• Start-up visa
• Live-in Caregiver Program
• Home Child Care Provider Pilot (without the work permit fee )
• Home Support Worker Pilot (without the work permit fee )

If you are applying for a work permit, you must pay for it separately :

• pay your caregiver fees and get your receipt, then
• pay your work permit fees and get another receipt.

Include both receipts with your application.

Economic immigration (including Express Entry)

• Agri-food pilot
• Atlantic immigration pilot
• Atlantic immigration program
• Canadian experience class
• Federal skilled workers
• Federal skilled trades
• Provincial nominee
• Rural and northern immigration pilot
• Quebec-selected skilled workers

Humanitarian and compassionate

These fees also apply to the

• Health-care worker permanent residence pathway
• Pathway to permanent residence � Families of Canadian victims of recent air disasters
• Pathway to permanent residence � Family reunification for Ukrainian nationals
• Temporary public policy for Hong Kong residents
• Temporary public policy to further facilitate access to permanent resident status for out-of-status construction workers in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA)
• Temporary resident to permanent resident pathway (TR to PR pathway)

Your permanent resident (PR) card can only be delivered to an address in Canada. If you are outside Canada and don�t have a valid PR card, or if your card is lost or stolen, apply for a  permanent resident travel document  to return to Canada.

The Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship may grant permanent resident status to an inadmissible foreign national based on humanitarian and compassionate or public policy grounds.

Right of permanent residence fee.

For most permanent residence applications, you need to pay the right of permanent residence fee (RPRF) when your application is approved. You will have to pay it before you can become a permanent resident.

You can pay the RPRF at the same time as your application fees to avoid delays. If we approve your application before you pay it, we will contact you to explain how.

We will refund the RPRF if you withdraw or we refuse your application. The RPRF is the only fee that we can refund after we start processing your application.

The RPRF does not apply to:

• the dependent children of a principal applicant or sponsor
• sponsorship applications for adopted children
• sponsorship applications for an orphaned brother, sister, niece, nephew or grandchild or
• protected persons, including applicants eligible on humanitarian and compassionate grounds and convention refugees.

Adopted children and other relatives

Note: If you are applying under the Family Class, you can pay your fees when the sponsor files the sponsorship application.

Parents and grandparents

Spouse, partner or children (abroad), spouse, partner or children (in canada), citizenship - application fees, other citizenship fees and services, authorization to return to canada, rehabilitation, repay your removal expenses.

If you are a citizen of certain countries or territories, you have to give your biometrics (fingerprints and photograph) when you apply for a:

• visitor visa
• study permit or
• work permit.

Note: The biometrics fee covers:

• collecting fingerprints and a digital photo
• moving your documents between our visa office and the VAC where you gave your biometrics

If your children qualify as dependants and need to give their biometrics, you can pay the family fee.

• transferring your documents between our visa office and the VAC where you gave your biometrics

If your children qualify as dependants , you can pay the family fee.

Note:  The biometrics fee covers the cost of collecting fingerprints and a digital photo. If your children qualify as dependants , you can pay the family fee. The biometrics fee also covers the VAC core services if you submit your application through a VAC.

Core services include:

• checking that applications are complete
• sending applications to the visa office
• moving supporting documents and passports to and from the visa office and
• tracking online applications.

Notes: Employer Compliance – group of entertainers (3 or more):  To be eligible for the group fee, you must make your offers of employment to a group of three or more foreign nationals, consisting of performing artists and their staff, at the same time.

Cuba Tourist Board of Canada

• REQUIREMENTS FOR CANADIANS PASSENGERS TRAVELING TO CUBA (updated as of Nov 2, 2023)
• Travelling from Canada to Cuba, you just need a valid Canadian passport, if your passport is from another country, you need your Canadian resident card or a work or study permit that includes a multiple-entry permit attached to your passport. For Cuba, you need the tourist card (the tourist card is included in your plane ticket and is issued by the airline on board)
• All passengers arriving to Cuba from a direct flight from Canada, do not need to present a vaccination passport.
• Medical insurance is required for Cuba, medical insurance must cover any type of medical emergency including COVID-19, so in case of a medical emergency the tourist is responsible for paying the costs, for this reason, Cuba suggests having medical insurance for all types of medical emergencies including covid. If you are unable to obtain insurance in Canada, you can purchase medical insurance in Cuba at the airport or visit www.cubatravel.cu. For more information on what the insurance includes, contact the representative at the Insurance desk at the airport in Cuba.
• Since January 1, 2022, travelers must complete the customs and health declaration form, this is done online and the website to visit is: https://www.dviajeros.mitrans.gob.cu . All travelers must complete this information online 48 hours before traveling to Cuba. Once the form is completed, you will receive a QR code by email. You must show an electronic or printed version of the QR code to the authorities upon arrival. If you have any problems and you can't fill out the form online because you don't have internet access, the printed form will be available on arrival at the airport in Cuba to fill it out.
• CURRENCY: The local currency is the Cuban Peso (CUP). The convertible peso has been discontinued and is no longer accepted in Cuba. US and CAD dollars are  accepted anywhere in Cuba.  At tourist areas which includes hotels, restaurants and shopping malls, payment is only accepted with debit/visa cards or visa / mastercard credit cards from Canadian banks . Customers who do not have a credit card can buy a prepaid card in Cuba at the airport or at any money exchange kiosks at hotels . Payments outside the tourist areas are all in Cuban pesos (CUP); We recommend exchanging Canadian dollars for pesos as needed and only if you plan to travel OUTSIDE of tourist areas, since you will not be able to change the remaining pesos into Canadian dollars at the end of the holiday.
