Cher, on yet another farewell tour, revives hits and shows she’s ready to move on

Cher's been in folks' faces and ears for about half a century, but she's talked up her latest road trip as her farewell farewell tour. Near the beginning of her Friday show at the Verizon Center, Cher insisted she means what she's said: "It's time." To stop the groans from the crowd, she winked. But the rest of the evening, even for its many fun and melancholy moments, indicated she should stick to her words.

She had appeared onstage tied to a tall pillar and wearing a headdress designed to look like a pastel peacock for "Woman's World," an industrial dance number from " Closer to the Truth ," her first studio album since 2002. Like other offerings from the new record, the production overwhelmed her singing, but from the floor to the rafters, folks were so happy just to share a room with Cher that they practically made the arena bounce to the heavy electronic beat.

There were plenty of nods to the old days. The large video screens above the stage flashed photographs of a younger Cher during vintage hits such as “Bang Bang,” “Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves” and “Half Breed,” the last rendered while she wore a fake Indian headdress that ain’t as politically correct as it was when that single topped the charts in 1973 (although the singer-actress has always said she has some Cherokee heritage). She put on a red sequined miniskirt and matching go-go boots for a duet with a video of Sonny Bono on “I Got You Babe,” from her days as a TV star with Bono, back when they were positioned as the Lucy and Ricky of the hippie generation. As if anybody needed a reminder, the shots proved just how gorgeous Cher was. Next to her, the photos also revealed, Sonny somehow never looked young.

Being a Cher show, there was outrageousness. She devoted one of the night’s too-many nonmusical interludes to a confession that her onstage drink of choice is Dr Pepper cut with bubbly water — “a white-trash white wine spritzer,” she called it — and railed that the soft drink maker should reward her with an endorsement deal. Even Cher knew she was babbling, so the pointlessness of the monologue became its whole point. “Gaga doesn’t talk like that!” Cher said, taking a poke at a relative newcomer whose show biz career has benefited from borrowing parts of Cher’s act. “I’d rather talk than have some chick vomit on me, okay?”

Cher embraced and courted the gay community decades ago, at a time when other mainstream pop stars wouldn’t, and the Verizon Center crowd was full of grateful holdovers from those days. In turn, her show featured lots of sweaty, barely-clad musclemen, some of whom, at one point, were wrapping their legs around each other’s bulky torsos while swinging above the stage on ropes, a jaw-dropping routine that could be dubbed Cirque du So Gay.

She showed her gutsiness by performing "If I Could Turn Back Time" while wearing a sheer black black , cut-to-the-naughty-bits get-up from the 1980s that hard-core fans know as, well, the "'If I Could Turn Back Time' outfit." She skipped across the stage as she did when she first put it on, but the steps were labored. Cher appeared to be physically in pain at a few points in the show, walking as though her joints weren't up to what she was asking of them.

She worked through most of the discomfort like a pro, but after some strutting, she disappeared backstage while the band was still playing "Believe." She came back to the crowd's roars to perform "I Hope You Find It," a consciously uplifting cover of a Miley Cyrus single, perhaps a sign that she's turning over the outrageous mantle to that younger pop star , known to purvey Cheresque outrageousness . She sang the tune while being lifted all across the arena inside a pulley-controlled bird's nest and had a hard time freeing herself from the safety mechanisms as she tried to exit the flying contraption. That made saying goodbye to her fans hard, logistically and emotionally. But notwithstanding those winks from earlier in the evening, this really looked like the end.

Cher turns ‘farewell’ tease into an entertainment ride

Cher performed at a sold-out TD Garden.

OK, look, this time she means it. Maybe. After declaring her 2002 stretch on the road her farewell tour, it went on for three more years and then led to a three-year casino residency in Las Vegas.

When Cher came to a sold-out TD Garden on Wednesday, her first Boston concert in more than a decade, she reiterated that this was the last chance to hear her live.

As the crowd’s boos swelled, Cher reassured the faithful. She winked and turned around to reveal her fingers crossed behind her back. We got the point: Why should she stop now?

The truth is, Cher doesn’t need to stop. She is in exceptional form, as a singer, entertainer, and tour guide through her 50 years in show business. She’s 67, yes, but that is irrelevant beyond the comic relief it imparted when Cher mentioned that she was limping a bit because she recently had foot surgery. She was also aware of just how well she has persevered.

“I can still get into my ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’ outfit, and I’m almost 100,” she joked. Sure enough, she did exactly that later in the evening when that song rang out in a rumbling singalong.

With five decades of songs to whittle down, there is no point in quibbling with the set list, even if, like me, you’d rather hear more from her 1960s catalog instead of her cover of an insipid Miley Cyrus song, the closing “I Hope You Find It,” during which she soared over the crowd in a floating platform.

From her ’60s heyday alongside Sonny Bono, Cher performed “The Beat Goes On” and sang to archival video footage of the late Bono doing his parts on “I Got You Babe.” It was unexpectedly sweet and not at all morbid. She skimmed the ’70s (“Gypsys, Tramps, & Thieves,” “Dark Lady,” “Half-Breed”) and saluted her inner dance diva (“Believe” and a handful of songs from last year’s “Closer to the Truth”).

Add to that a video montage that paid homage to her career as an Oscar-winning actress, plus numerous costume changes (I counted 10 and lost track of the number of wigs), and it all worked magically under the vast, rainbow-colored umbrella known as “Cher.”

With her husky vocal firepower and his guitar pyrotechnics, Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, her husband, warmed up the crowd with anthem after anthem: “Love Is a Battlefield,” “We Belong,” “Hit Me With Your Best Shot,” and “Heartbreaker.”

Cher Tour Grosses $55 Million (So Far)

Cher’s Dressed to Kill Tour is on track to become of the most successful treks of 2014, according to Billboard Boxscore.

The diva’s tour has grossed a reported $54.9 million through the end of its first leg on July 11. A total of 610,812 attendees went to the 49 shows — all of which were sell-outs.

The show is on a break until Sept. 11, when its second leg launches in Albany, New York at the Times Union Center. The show will get some extra glitter from Emmy Award-winning fashion designer Bob Mackie , who will provide new costumes for Cher. (The pair have collaborated for decades, but he couldn’t design outfits for the first leg of the new tour due to time constraints.)

The Dressed to Kill Tour is Cher’s first tour since her lengthy Living Proof Farewell Tour, which played 325 shows around the globe from 2002 through 2005.

Cher to End Vegas Run in February

Billboard was on hand at multiple shows throughout the new tour’s first leg, including its recent stop at Staples Center in Los Angeles on July 7. The icon was in fine form, belting out familiar hits like “If I Could Turn Back Time,” “Believe” and “I Got You Babe,” while mixing in new material from her most recent album, “Closer to the Truth.”

Trending on Billboard

Among the highlights in the show are a campy vampiric take on her new album’s “Dressed to Kill,” where she slinks around the stage before sinking her teeth into dancer Joe Slaughter. Also crowd-pleasing is her medley of her three No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hits from the 1970s: “Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves,” “Dark Lady” and “Half-Breed.” The show ends with Cher literally flying above the crowd, singing her top 20 Adult Contemporary chart hit, “I Hope You Find It.”

A special note should also be made of Cher’s exceptionally bendy aerialists Sagiv Ben Binyamin and Maximiliano Torandell, not to mention her strong backing vocalists Stacy Campbell and Nikki Tillman.

The Dressed to Kill Tour is promoted by Marshall Arts USA and saw its (so far) largest gross earned by a May 25 visit to the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas ($1.75 million). The most-attended show, through the July 11 engagement, was its May 10 concert at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where 14,893 attendees were in the house.

19 of Cher’s Most Show-Stopping Tour Moments Throughout the Years

No one does it quite like Cher

cher in concert at the entertainment centre

Is there anything more exciting than a Cher concert? The singer, who started solo touring in the late 1970s, really knows how to put on a show. Not only is her singing ability top-tier, but many of her concerts include incredible choreography, exciting stage design, and dazzling costumes (designed by Bob Mackie, of course). Cher has also been known to have excellent openers (Cyndi Lauper, Julio Iglesias Jr., we could go on) and a few unexpected details that push it over the edge—aerialists, video montages, you get the idea.

The “Do You Believe?” singer has been on the road for the last 40-plus years, which means she has no shortage of amazing tour moments. From next-level outfits to theatrical entrances (did you know she descended from the ceiling during one tour run?), here are 19 of Cher’s most show-stopping tour moments throughout the years.

1979: Cher in Concert Tour

1979: Posing with George Burns Backstage

There were also 12 costume changes. Cher is pictured wearing one of the costumes here with comedian George Burns.

1980: Black Rose

In 1980, Cher started a rock band with her then-boyfriend, Les Dudek. The group decided to go on a North American mini-tour that year where, for six of the dates, they opened up for Hall & Oates. Bob Mackie, Cher’s longtime collaborator, created the costumes for the performances.

1980s: Taking a Break from Touring

A year later, the star decided to take a break from touring. During her touring hiatus, she starred in several films, including Moonstruck , Silkwood , Mask , The Witches of Eastwick , and Suspect . Here, the performer is pictured posing at the 1986 Academy Awards dressed in an elaborately designed Bob Mackie creation.

1989: Heart of Stone Tour

After almost a decade of not touring, Cher announced her 1990 world tour, Heart of Stone . This larger-than-life tour happened over eight months and took the singer to places including Detroit, Philadelphia, Chicago, and more.

1992: Love Hurts Tour

A few years later, the songstress embarked on another world tour, Love Hurts . Planned in support of her twentieth studio album of the same name, the singer performed across Europe and North America. For this tour, Mackie designed nine different costumes, many of which incorporated both leather and dominatrix-style details that Cher had worn in the past.

Elaborate Outfits

During one of her songs, she came out in a furry white overcoat paired with sequined white gloves and an intricately-detailed sparkly hat.

1999: Do You Believe? Tour

In the late ‘90s, Cher kicked off her Do You Believe? Tour, which promoted her studio album, Believe. Although the tour was only supposed to run from June through December of 1999, it was so successful that it was given an extension through March 2000. The tour’s openers included Cyndi Lauper, Julio Iglesias Jr., and Michael McDonald.

Opening Acts

Here, Cyndi Lauper is pictured performing during the Do You Believe? Tour at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California.

2002: Living Proof: The Farewell Tour

Cher’s 2002 Living Proof: The Farewell Tour was only supposed to be 59 dates in North America, but was extended by 100 more shows. Each performance included 21 songs, multiple video montages, dancers, and aerialists.

During one of her sold-out Farewell Tour shows, the singer descended from the ceiling of the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, wearing a fur-trimmed coat and sequined headdress.

The Farewell Tour had plenty of eye-catching costumes. Here, the singer is pictured wearing an oversized red hat with silver trim, a circus ring leader-esque jacket with a large collar, and a sequined unitard layered underneath.

2008: Cher at the Colosseum

In 2008, Cher started her three-year residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The show included 17 costume changes (with outfits designed by Bob Mackie) and grossed over $97 million during its run.

2014: Dressed to Kill Tour

A few years later, the star returned to the road for her Dressed to Kill Tour . It spanned over a few months and kicked off in Phoenix, Arizona. The tour's second leg, which was supposed to begin at the end of April, was canceled due to Cher’s health issues.

Much like her previous tours, this one had a long list of dazzling costumes, including this sparkly red and white number.

2017: Classic Cher

Cher’s 2017 show, Classic Cher , was the singer’s third concert residency. It was performed in Las Vegas, Oxon Hill, and Atlantic City and included 18 songs on its setlist.

2018: Here We Go Again Tour

In May 2018, Cher announced she was going on her seventh solo concert tour, Here We Go Again . The tour started in September 2018 and was set to run longer but was cut short by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Cher closed out each show with “ If I Could Turn Back Time? ” and then returned to the stage for an encore performance of “Believe.” The concert was so well-received that it was nominated for a People’s Choice Award in 2019.

2023: A New Tour Announcement

Although it’s been a few years since her last tour, Cher has confirmed recently that she’s currently working on another studio album and will be touring again soon. Naturally, we're excited to see what she'll be wearing.

ABOUT THE CHER SHOW

cher 2014 tour

Her Life. Her Music. Her Legend. Superstars come and go. Cher is forever. For six straight decades, only one unstoppable force has flat-out dominated popular culture – breaking down barriers, pushing boundaries and letting nothing and no one stand in her way. THE CHER SHOW is the Tony Award®-winning musical of her story, and it’s packed with so much Cher that it takes three women to play her: the kid starting out, the glam pop star, and the icon.

THE CHER SHOW is 35 smash hits, six decades of stardom, two rock-star husbands, a Grammy®, an Oscar®, an Emmy®, and enough Tony Award-winning Bob Mackie gowns to cause a sequin shortage in New York City, all in one unabashedly fabulous new musical that will have audiences dancing in the aisles!

Review: THE CHER SHOW at The Stifel Theatre

The Tony Winning Musical Makes a Stop at The Stifel Theatre

pixeltracker

Cher’s story is told using a storytelling convention that has been seen in other biographical jukebox musicals. A trio of actors with exceptional vocal abilities, Ella Perez , Catherine Ariale , and Morgan Scott each portray Cher at different ages. Perez is a teenaged version of Cher. Scott plays the older iconic diva, and Ariale is sandwiched in between the two others as the mid-20s version of the singer. All three women inhabit their roles without creating a caricature or a campy imitation. Ariale and Scott each give their songs the stylistic panache that would satisfy any Cher fan, but Perez is the vocal standout among the three talented singers. In her first national tour, she handled her parts of the score with a perfect balance of head and chest voice. She is likely to become a performer well known for her impressive belt voice. Credit casting director Alison Frank for selecting these three exceptional actors, and  Lorenzo Pugliese who is terrific as Sonny Bono , to fill the principal roles.

Review: THE CHER SHOW at The Stifel Theatre

Morrison's Tony nominated lighting design, coupled with Infante and Tighe’s video projections create vibrantly stunning images that nearly make up for the minimalist set design. Their nod to the set of the Sonny and Cher TV variety show created a warm sense of nostalgia for older audience members. But elaborate lighting and video projection is a poor replacement for a full-blown set design. There has been a trend with other recent biopic musicals for the creative team to skimp on set design and rely solely on projection effects as a backdrop. It's less noticeable in this production due to the moving layered panels that give the stage more depth, but large prop pieces like a stand-up piano, desks, chairs, a bed, and large clothing racks filled with hung costumes do not a set design make.

Lack of set design isn’t the biggest flaw with THE CHER SHOW. It's the fly over narrative from Rick Elice ’s book. Elice paints Cher’s entire life with a script that is thinner than watercolor paint. He has written a nostalgic piece of memorabilia that lacks any real substance. He touches on everything, without focusing on anything. There is no doubt that he penned a script to support a score that included every one of Cher’s hits throughout her career. Which is why THE CHER SHOW works as a musical revue, but not as a Broadway musical with a compelling story.

Fans of Cher will not be disappointed with this production. There is plenty of music, talent, glitz, glamour, and fun to satisfy. There is one additional opportunity to catch THE CHER SHOW at the Stifel theatre tonight, Thursday April 11th at 7:30 PM. Click the link below to purchase tickets.
