Bahamas vs. Bermuda cruises: Which itinerary will I like more?

Erica Silverstein

Ah, the bliss of island cruising! Who cares if you choose the Bahamas or Bermuda as your next cruise destination — all islands offer warm weather, gorgeous beaches and outdoor activities year-round. Right?

Wrong. Sure, the Bahamas and Bermuda are both island nations located in the Atlantic Ocean, and you can hit the beach on your cruise to either place. But that's where the similarities end. Bermuda and the Bahamas each possess a unique island vibe and culture, and itineraries to each destination vary in departure ports and cruise styles.

Bahamas vs. Bermuda cruise itineraries

You can sail on a cruise ship to the Bahamas year-round from a number of port cities in the U.S. including Baltimore; New York City (via ports both in Manhattan and in nearby Bayonne, New Jersey); Fort Lauderdale; Miami; Palm Beach, Florida; Port Canaveral, Florida; Galveston, Texas; and New Orleans. That's because it's beach season all year long in the Bahamas – except when a passing hurricane brings the rain in summer and fall.

Itineraries can be as short as two nights or as long as a week. Both short and weeklong Bahamas cruises sail exclusively to Bahamian ports, but some seven-night sailings mix it up with ports of call in the Caribbean or Florida.

Bermuda, on the other hand, is not hot year-round, so cruises typically sail from April through November. Some cruise lines offer the occasional winter Bermuda cruise, or tack a visit onto an off-season transatlantic sailing. You'll still have fun in the shoulder season, but it might not be swimming weather.

The standard Bermuda cruise is a week, though you can find four- and five-night options. Bermuda cruises depart exclusively from Northeastern ports, including Boston, New York and Baltimore. In most cases, the ship will sail to one of the Bermuda ports and dock there for one to three days before heading back home.

RELATED: Does it make sense to take a short cruise to Bermuda?

The benefit of this style of itinerary is you're in port overnight and can explore the island nation in-depth, from early morning bike rides to romantic sunset sails. However, cruisers who love getting rocked to sleep by the waves will miss those extra nights of sailing when they're docked for two evenings straight.

Bahamas vs. Bermuda ports of call

Bermuda is a former British colony, with a more formal vibe than you'll find in the laid-back Bahamas. Though it's made up of more than 100 islands, its largest and most populated islands are connected by bridges to form the destination we think of as Bermuda. Cruise ships don't island-hop here. They pick one of three cruise ports and dock.

Cruise ships that dock in Hamilton are in the heart of the action; the city is the nation's capital. Visitors can choose from city pursuits like shopping and dining or head to the beaches and golf courses. The Royal Naval Dockyard, referred to as King's Wharf by some cruise lines, is a historic naval site located at the western tip of Bermuda. St. George's on Bermuda's eastern end is a World Heritage Site with narrow, cobblestone streets and oodles of charm. (It was one of the first colonial settlements in the New World.)

cruise bahamas and bermuda

Cruises to the Bahamas will visit several Bahamian ports on a weeklong cruise, though a few itineraries feature two days at a cruise line's private island. These private islands -- such as Holland America 's Half Moon Cay, Disney Cruise Line 's Castaway Cay and Royal Caribbean 's Perfect Day at CocoCay – are popular with cruisers for their pristine beaches and plentiful activities, all in a safe environment where your cruise card is accepted currency and a lunch buffet is free.

Avid cruisers give the staple Bahamian ports of Nassau and Freeport mixed reviews. The Freeport cruise port is isolated, and the beaches and resorts on surrounding Grand Bahama Island don't always live up to expectations. Nassau is touristy; the cruise port is located in the heart of a large shopping district. Escape downtown to find yourself a spot on a gorgeous resort beach or hop in a boat for some water sports action.

Bahamas vs. Bermuda beaches and water sports

Neither Bermuda nor the Bahamas will disappoint when it comes to beaches. The Bahamas lure visitors with beach weather year-round, but Bermuda has a more temperate climate. If you cruise there in the shoulder season, the weather might not be warm enough for swimming.

Bermuda is known for its pink-sand beaches, such as Horseshoe Bay Beach, often with scenic rock formations framing the sand and sea. Beaches here are smaller than the far-ranging stretches of sand you find in the Caribbean or U.S. You'll need transportation from the cruise port to the best beaches, though little Snorkel Park Beach is walking distance from King's Wharf.

You can snorkel from a Bermuda beach in many places, or rent kayaks, stand-up paddleboards or boogie boards. Book a tour to try snuba, jet skiing or parasailing. Sailing tours by day or for sunset are popular choices.

All of the cruise line private islands in the Bahamas offer idyllic beach days, with gorgeous white-sand beaches, on-site bars and buffets, and a variety of activities, from snorkeling to kayaking and horseback riding. You won't be bothered by vendors trying to braid your hair or sell you souvenirs, though staff will come through taking drink orders.

cruise bahamas and bermuda

Nassau and Freeport are also popular beach destinations, and many people will purchase day passes to resorts for the nicest and safest options. Junkanoo Beach is walking distance from the Nassau cruise port and offers on-site bars, restaurants and water sports rentals, but it's more of a party beach than a tropical idyll. Head to Atlantis if you want a beachfront waterpark as your playground for the day. Be warned, though: Day passes don't come cheap.

Freeport's beaches range in quality when it comes to resort amenities, and beach clubs occasionally over-promise and under-deliver. Bimini has that private-island vibe, with an emphasis on sunbathing, diving, snorkeling and boating.

You'll find all your favorite water sports in the Bahamas. Snorkel, dive, sail, kayak or take a glass-bottom boat tour on your own or via an excursion. If you're a wildlife fan, you can swim with dolphins, stingrays, sharks and even pigs.

Bahamas vs. Bermuda shore excursions and activities

The main difference between Bermuda and the Bahamas is that beaches and water sports are the key activities in the Bahamas, while Bermuda's attractions are more varied.

In Bermuda, cruise visitors can enjoy the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo, as well as historic forts and the limestone formations of the Crystal Caves. The island's capital, Hamilton, is a small city and its Front Street is chock-full of shops and restaurants. Hop on a bike and pedal your way along the Bermuda Railway Trail or to Cooper's Island Nature Reserve.

Bermuda is also famous for its plentiful golf courses, and enthusiasts can book tee times at courses such as Belmont Hills and Turtle Hill.

Nassau has a few historic sites, such as the Queen's Staircase and Fort Fincastle, but they are not the main attraction. The Pirates of Nassau Museum is a fun rainy day destination, and the small National Art Gallery set in a historic home is a hidden gem. You'll find plenty of shopping on Bay Street from the straw market to high-end jewelry stores, but check out the artisans market in Pompey Square for locally made goods.

Bottom line

When pitting Bermuda versus the Bahamas as your potential cruise destination, you need to match each island nation's beaches, activities and ports of call with your preferred vacation style.

Pros and Cons of Visiting Bermuda

Dreaming of an island escape, I weighed the pros and cons of visiting the beautiful yet enigmatic Bermuda islands . With pink sandy beaches and its British colony charm, this North Atlantic paradise called to me – but I had to balance the alluring upsides against potential downsides like high costs and hurricane season before deciding if it was the right tropical getaway.

Pros of Visiting Bermuda

Here are some pros of visiting Bermuda.

Pros of Visiting Bermuda

  • Scenic Beauty:  The beautiful landscapes of Bermuda, with its turquoise waters and stunning sand beaches, offer a breathtaking backdrop for relaxation and exploration. I was amazed by the vibrant colors surrounding me.
  • Cultural Richness:  Immerse yourself in the island’s rich history and Culture, evident in the pastel-hued architecture and charming local traditions. Learning about the island’s heritage made my experience feel very authentic.
  • Safety and Cleanliness:  Bermuda’s commitment to safety and cleanliness makes it an ideal destination for a worry-free vacation, allowing you to explore with peace of mind. I felt completely safe wandering around by myself.
  • Water Activities:  The crystal-clear waters surrounding Bermuda provide ample opportunities for snorkeling, diving, and other water-based adventures, revealing a vibrant underwater world. Snorkeling the shipwrecks was a highlight of my trip.
  • Culinary Delights:  Indulge in a diverse culinary scene where fresh seafood and local specialties showcase the island’s unique flavors.

Cons of Visiting Bermuda

Check out some of the downsides if you visit Bermuda.

Cons of Visiting Bermuda

  • Cost of Living:  Bermuda’s reputation as an upscale destination is reflected in its higher cost of living, from accommodations to dining, which may impact budget-conscious travelers. Everything was quite expensive.
  • Limited Nightlife:  While the island offers a relaxed atmosphere, those seeking a vibrant nightlife scene may find options limited compared to other destinations. It’s not a late-night party atmosphere.
  • Smaller Size:  Bermuda’s size might limit the range of activities and attractions, especially for those seeking more entertainment options. I did run out of new things to do after several days.
  • Weather Variability:  The weather can be unpredictable, with occasional rain showers, so it’s advisable to plan outdoor activities accordingly. I got caught in a few rainstorms unexpectedly.
  • Transportation Challenges:  Navigating the island can be challenging, with limited public transportation options, making it necessary to rely on taxis or scooters, which may not be everyone’s preferred mode of travel. Renting a scooter was an adjustment for me.

Pros and Cons of Visiting the Bahamas

When planning my dream Caribbean getaway, the stunning Bahamas islands called to me with their white sand beaches and colorful coral reefs. But I knew that along with the famous ocean paradise came some downsides. Before booking my trip, I weighed the pros, like incredible beaches and Nightlife, against the cons, including potential hurricane disruptions and crowds.

Pros of Visiting the Bahamas

Let’s first familiarize ourselves with the benefits of visiting the Bahamas:

Pros of Visiting the Bahamas

  • Exquisite Beaches : The beaches took my breath away. The soft and white sand, coupled with clear turquoise water, made the place feel like paradise.

  • Costs : Some excursions and attractions were pricey. The costs added up quickly.
  • Inconsistent Service : I had excellent and okay Service. It varied quite a bit between establishments.
  • Island Time : The relaxed pace could test your patience if you’re Type A. It’s not ideal if you’re punctual.

The Bahamas and Bermuda: Location and Accessibility

The Bahamas is located just 50 miles off the coast of Florida, in the Atlantic Ocean to the north of Cuba. As a US citizen, it was easy for me to get there with many direct flights available that took less than 2 hours.

I could conveniently depart from hubs like Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Orlando and land at Wade International Airport. You can see the Bahamas’ proximity to the US on Google Maps here:

On the other hand, Bermuda is located further out in the Atlantic Ocean, over 600 miles off the coast of North Carolina. To get there from the US, I had to take longer flights, around 2.5-3 hours, direct from a main airport like Atlanta.

Given Bermuda’s more remote mid-Atlantic location, it took more time and effort to access it as an American. You can view Bermuda’s more distant location on Google Maps here:

Which Has The Better Beaches and Natural Scenery?

When planning a tropical getaway, stunning natural beauty is a must for me. I wanted to compare the beaches and scenery of the Bahamas and Bermuda to see which island paradise would impress me more.

Though far less extensive than the Bahamas, Bermuda punches above its weight with distinctive beaches and scenic coves nestled among the Island’s lush greenery.

  • Pink Sand Beaches:  Bermuda is renowned for its stunning pink beaches, the most famous being Horseshoe Bay Beach. The pink hue was so unique and beautiful.

  • Underwater Exploration:  Snorkeling the coral reefs and seeing the vibrant marine life was a personal highlight. The colors were magnificent. Visiting the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute gave me insight into the Island’s rich ecosystem. The exhibits were fascinating.

Nightlife in the Bahamas vs Bermuda

The Bahamas and Bermuda both offer enjoyable nightlife but with different vibes. The Bahamas is known for its vibrant late-night clubs, resort entertainment, and glitzy casinos. Bermuda has a more relaxed ambiance of pubs, lounges, and local culture. Night owls and early bedders can both enjoy themselves. A comparison of the nightlife reveals where your perfect Island after-dark activities await.

Bahamas Nightlife

The Bahamas is known for its lively nightlife around Nassau and Paradise Island. Here you’ll find:

  • Upscale nightclubs like Dragon Ultra Lounge had DJs, and island cocktails late into the night. I had fun dressing up and going club-hopping into the early morning.
  • Major resorts like Atlantis have on-site clubs, shows, and casinos. The resort entertainment went non-stop with music and gambling.

Bahamas casino

  • Junkanoo festivals and Fish Fry street parties with Bahamian food, drinks, and music. I enjoyed the lively street culture.

Glitzy casinos open until the wee hours, where you can try your luck gambling. I didn’t spend much time in the casinos personally.

Bermuda Nightlife

Bermuda’s nightlife is more low-key in comparison. Popular after-dark options include:

  • Laidback pubs and wine bars like The Frog and Onion Pub get lively in the evenings. I enjoyed the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

The Frog and Onion Pub

  • Intimate cocktail lounges and small clubs, often with live music. The venues had a refined yet cozy vibe.
  • Outdoor bars and restaurants like Seabreeze Lounge at Elbow Beach Bermuda Resort & Spaare perfect for a sunset drink. I loved happy hour drinks on the scenic patios.

Local entertainment like Gombey dancers. The colorful traditional dance performances were entertaining.

Bahamas vs Bermuda: Cuisine

Join me as I taste the flavors of the Bahamas and Bermuda. I’ll share the mouthwatering foods that make these islands unique, from tropical conch fritters to proper British afternoon tea. Get ready to savor spice, seafood, and fusion cuisine through my first-hand food adventures.

Bahamas Cuisine

The Bahamas boasts a flavorful blend of African, Caribbean, and European influences. Popular dishes include:

  • Conch dishes : Conch is a sea snail popular in the Bahamas. It can be fried, sautéed, or used in cakes and salads. The conch fritters I tried were crispy and bursting with flavor.

Conch dishes

  • Fresh seafood:  Grouper, mahi mahi, snapper, and other tropical fish are fried, grilled, or in stews and chowders. I loved the grilled mahi mahi for its freshness.

Grilled mahi mahi

  • Jerk dishes : Meat and seafood get the flavor from the spicy jerk seasoning blend. Jerk chicken and shrimp packed some heat.
  • Peas ‘n rice : This side made with pigeon peas, rice, and coconut milk was the perfect accompaniment.
  • Rum cake : Cakes infused with Caribbean rum are a signature Bahamian dessert. The rum cake was a sweet indulgence.

Rum cake

Bermuda Cuisine

Bermuda’s cuisine is influenced by its ties to Britain with dishes like:

  • Fresh seafood : Rockfish, reef fish, spiny lobster, and more are served grilled in chowders and pot pies. The rockfish was exceptional.
  • Afternoon tea : Sandwiches, scones, and pastries are served daily at hotels. I loved this genteel tradition.
  • Fish chowder : This creamy chowder is iconic and spiced with sherry pepper sauce and black rum. It captured incredible flavor.

Fish chowder

  • Shark hash:  Made from black tip reef shark meat, this unique dish surprised me with its great taste.

The cuisine highlights the island heritage and bounty of each destination. The Bahamas brings Caribbean spice, while Bermuda offers British refinement.

Which Has The Better Culture and Cultural Excursions?

As a culture vulture seeking authentic island experiences, I explored the diverse heritage of the Bahamas and Bermuda. Junkanoo parades brought Bahamian flavor, while afternoon tea soaked me in British refinement.

Bahamas Culture and Cultural Excursions

The Bahamas offers a vibrant blend of cultures that I got to experience first-hand:

  • Exploring the Island’s Junkanoo museum, I gained insight into this iconic African-style festival and its origins.

Junkanoo museum

  • Hearing oral histories of the influential Obeah Man Pinder, I learned about this integral cultural figure.
  • I tried traditional bush teas and natural remedies from Bahamian healers that opened my eyes to their plant medicine.
  • Joining a Rake ‘n’ Scrape band, I danced to this uniquely Bahamian music. The fast rhythmic style was infectious.

  • Shopping for handmade batik fabrics and straw work, I got to meet talented local Bahamian artisans preserving cultural crafts.

Bermuda Culture and Cultural Excursions

In Bermuda, I was able to dive into aspects of its British colonial roots:

  • At the Naval Dockyard, I saw artifacts and places that revealed Bermuda’s nautical past under the British.
  • The National Museum brought Bermuda’s culture and history to life through engaging exhibits on its people and traditions.

National Museum of Bermuda

  • I experienced a signature cultural tradition with music and lively Gombey dancers at a fish fry. It showcased Bermudian pride.
  • Learning about the island’s iconic white-roofed houses gave insight into British-influenced Bermudian architecture.
  • An elegant afternoon tea immersed me in British food customs with scones, sandwiches, and more.
  • The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute highlighted ties to the sea through fascinating marine exhibits.

The islands offer immersive cultural experiences, connecting me with each place’s heritage. I now understand why it’s a popular tourist destination for beach lovers.

Weather and When To Visit the Bahamas vs Bermuda

When planning tropical getaways to the Bahamas or Bermuda, it’s key to consider their differing climates and peak seasons to experience the islands’ best weather.

I visited the Bahamas in January and experienced the tropical climate first-hand. During my stay, the temperatures were pleasantly warm, ranging from the mid-70s to low 80s Fahrenheit. Humidity was moderate, and rainfall was minimal, with mostly sunny skies throughout my trip.

When To Visit the Bahamas vs Bermuda

Residents advised me that the best time to visit Bermuda is from May to October when the weather is warm and rainfall is moderate. I’d recommend visiting during May-June or September-October to maximize pleasant conditions while avoiding the peak hurricane season of August-October.

Safety in the Bahamas vs Bermuda

Explore the safe landscapes of the Bahamas and Bermuda, ensuring a secure and enjoyable experience in these tropical paradises.

During my visit to the Bahamas , I exercised reasonable caution, especially in urban areas like Nassau. There can be petty crimes like pickpocketing and bag snatching in crowded tourist spots and less populated areas after dark. I avoided poorly lit alleys and secluded beaches at night.

I felt very secure exploring all over Bermuda thanks to its reputation as an exceptionally safe destination. Even when visiting alone, I could navigate the island day and night confidently. While petty theft can happen rarely, violent crime is highly uncommon. I took basic precautions like keeping cash and phones out of sight when unnecessary.

Where To Stay According To Your Budget?

Embarking on an unforgettable island journey, I explored lodging options tailored to my preferences in the Bahamas and Bermuda.

As I planned my Bahamas getaway, I considered these accommodation options:

  • Staying in budget hotels like Sawgrass Grand Hotel and Suites Sports Complex in Fort Lauderdale before catching my flight, I got beautiful beaches without blowing my budget.

Sawgrass Grand Hotel and Suites Sports Complex

  • Indulging in luxury resorts on the Grand Bahama Island, I enjoyed opulent amenities and entertainment amidst Bahamian beauty. From the comfort of Atlantis, the entire islands felt accessible.

To find a suitable home base in Bermuda, I looked at:

  • Affordable lodging like Aunt Nea’s Inn within walking distance of historic sites allowed me to explore Bermuda’s heritage up close on a budget. Location was key.

  • Luxury cottages near Elbow Beach put me steps from the Bermuda Institute and pink sand while soaking me in sophistication. Waking up to the ocean along Elbow Beach was rejuvenating.

Bahamas vs Bermuda cruise itineraries

Dive into the allure of cruise travel along the East Coast, comparing the Bahamas and Bermuda. From private beaches to coral reefs, uncover unforgettable experiences that cruise lines offer.

  • Cruise Ships : The Bahamas is a top Caribbean cruise destination, with major lines offering diverse, port-filled itineraries. Bermuda cruises focus on fully experiencing the island nation’s beauty and culture over seven days.
  • Royal Naval Dockyard : During my Bahamas stopover, I explored British colonial forts and landmarks in Nassau. Bermuda’s dockyard provided a whole day of history, dining, and entertainment.

  • Horseshoe Bay and Warwick Long Bay : Horseshoe Bay’s stunning pink sand and blue waters made for an idyllic Bahamas cruise excursion. Bermuda’s Warwick Long Bay wowed me with its long pink beaches and scenic coastal trails along the East Coast.

Bahamas vs Bermuda: Cost

So let’s find out which direction made my pocket empty more:

  • Accommodation Expenses : I stayed at Sunrise Beach Club and Villas , an affordable hotel in Nassau, but the Bahamas also boasts luxury resorts and villas on private islands for a premium. Bermuda’s hotels were pricier, befitting its reputation as an upscale destination.
  • Dining and Food Costs : Nassau had budget-friendly local spots for traditional fare and fancy restaurants. Bermuda’s dining tended to be expensive, even for casual beachside eateries like The Dock at Waterlot Inn. Groceries were also pricier. Of course, there are no international chain restaurants apart from the lone KFC.
  • Transportation Expenses : Getting around Nassau was cheap, but boats to the islands were expensive. Taxis were the main transport in Bermuda, adding to costs. Renting a scooter offsets some expenses.
  • Activities and Excursions : Bahamas excursions ranged from reasonable snorkeling trips to pricey diving expeditions. Bermuda’s activities skew higher, but some museums had free entry.
  • Shopping Costs : Nassau had bargain souvenirs at the straw market and high-end designers downtown. Everything in Bermuda felt overpriced, especially in the dockyard.

Overall, the Bahamas accommodated different budgets better, while Bermuda’s upscale reputation rang true. Still, smart planning in both Island nations helps travelers control expenses.

Which is better Bermuda or Bahamas?

The choice between Bermuda and the Bahamas depends on your preferences. Bermuda offers British charm, pink beaches, and a refined atmosphere, while the Bahamas captivates with vibrant culture, beautiful islands, and lively festivals.

Which is better Bahamas or Turks and Caicos?

The decision between the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos hinges on your desires. Choose the Bahamas for its lively atmosphere, diverse culture, and vibrant festivals, or Turks and Caicos for pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a more tranquil setting.

Which is prettier Bahamas or the Caribbean?

Comparing the Bahamas and the Caribbean is subjective, but both offer stunning beauty. The Bahamas boasts pink beaches and vibrant culture, while the Caribbean encompasses a diverse range of islands, each with its unique charm.

Why is Bermuda so popular?

Bermuda’s popularity stems from its unique blend of British elegance, pink beaches, and a rich maritime history. The island’s pristine landscapes, cultural richness, and welcoming atmosphere make it a sought-after destination.

When deciding between the Bahamas and Bermuda, it’s clear both island destinations have their unique offerings. The Bahamas offers a getaway with stunning beaches, warm waters, and a mix of dining and accommodation options.

Bermuda entices travelers with its British charm, upscale amenities, pristine landscapes, and cultural experiences that immerse you into island life.

Ultimately, choosing the Bahamas or Bermuda depends on your travel style, priorities, and budget. By now, I hope you clearly understand what each destination provides. Consider sharing this comparison with friends when planning a tropical island vacation.

Bermuda vs Bahamas Cruises: How Are They Different?

Picture of Orlando Martinez

Orlando Martinez

  • November 16, 2020

When The Beach Boys sing “Bermuda, Bahamas, come on pretty mama,” you might expect that these island destinations are near each other and offer similar experiences. But that couldn’t be further from the truth.

While both are popular cruise destinations, they each offer a very different experience and tend to draw a different kind of visitor.

Differences Between Bermuda and Bahamas

The 700 islands that make up the Bahamas are located just off the coast of South Florida, with the country’s main cruise port less than 200 miles from PortMiami.

Many assume the Bahamas are part of the Caribbean, but they’re actually located in the Bahamian Sea rather than the Caribbean Sea or the Gulf of Mexico, and are rightfully their own destination.

The country is home to two main cruise ports (Nassau and Freeport) and at least seven of the private destinations owned by the cruise lines.

The climate in the Bahamas is semi-tropical: warm, humid, and sunny for most of the year, especially rainy during the summer, and prone to tropical cyclones during hurricane season which runs from June 1 to November 30.

CL Berm Boats

Bermuda, on the other hand, is a single island in the Atlantic Ocean, about 1,000 miles off the coast of South Carolina. Though it’s somewhat off the coast of a southern state, most cruises to the island sail from the mid-Atlantic and northeastern states.

Weather in Bermuda is subtropical, with highs in the 80s in the summer and lows in the 60s during the winter months. Humidity can be severe in the summer and early fall, but there’s no specific rainy season, and some months see very little rain at all.

As in the Bahamas, Hurricane season is a concern from June 1 to November 30, and due to its location in the Atlantic, Bermuda is often threatened by storms that otherwise bypass the Caribbean, Bahamas, and US coast.

Cruising to Bermuda

BERMUDA CRUISE 3

Cruises to Bermuda most often depart from Baltimore, Boston, and the New York City area. While at first glance this might seem unusual, given how far south the island is located, when you consider it’s generally the closest island destination to the northeast, it allows the cruise lines to offer something akin to a Caribbean cruise in 7 nights or less from the northeast.

Bermuda cruises are usually five to seven nights, with most itineraries offering overnight calls. Five-night cruises from Baltimore will typically cover a single night visit, with seven-night cruises offering two nights and three days on the island.

When you step off a cruise ship in Bermuda, what quickly becomes apparent is that it’s one of the most affluent places on earth. Throughout the island are magnificent homes on lawns so perfectly manicured you won’t see a blade of grass out of place.

The island is spectacularly beautiful and for some, almost too perfect. If you love golf, there are world-class courses. The pink sand beaches are delightful, and there are still remnants of early British settlements there.

NYC TO BERMUDA SCREENSHOT

But if you want lively nightlife and gambling, head for the Bahamas because these things don’t exist in Bermuda – of course, there are pubs and restaurants but it’s decidedly conservative and sedate. Men really do wear Bermuda shorts on this island paradise where life is little changed since the 1960s.

Due to its remote location in the Atlantic and the affluent local population, prices on shore tend to be higher than most other destinations, including the Bahamas.

And you’ll notice the hit to your wallet even before you step on the ship: Bermuda cruises tend to be pricier per night, per person, than cruises to the Bahamas or the Caribbean. This is due to demand and the relatively lower number of sailings that are offered each year.

Beaches in Bermuda

BERMUDA CRUISE 2

Yes, beaches in Bermuda really do have pink sand, caused by single-celled red organisms that live beneath the coral that surrounds the island. Once these organisms die, they combine with crushed coral and shell, and turn pink when they are bleached by the sun after they wash onto the shore via pounding waves. Don’t try to bring this unique sand home as a souvenir, though… removing sand from the beach is illegal.

BERMUDA CRUISE 1

Horseshoe Bay Beach is widely considered to be not only the best beach on the island, but one of the world’s top stretches of sand. It’s a short 20-minute drive from King’s Wharf, the island’s primary cruise port.

REVIEW: Horseshoe Bay Beach in Bermuda

Chaplin Bay and Stonehole Bay Beaches are just up the coast from Horseshoe Bay, and are especially picturesque thanks to their location near rocky cliffs. Warwick Long Bay Beach isn’t much further, and is a great place to begin a snorkeling experience.

West Whale Bay Beach got its name from the humpback whales that are spotted offshore in April as they head north to feed.

Best Time To Cruise To Bermuda

There’s no single answer… it depends on what is most important to you.

If you’re looking for the best weather, consider May or June to avoid the worst of the summer humidity and hurricane season.

Based on cost alone, March, April, and November usually have the best price.

Cruising to the Bahamas

Nassau Bahamas lighthouse

While the Bahamas are composed of about 700 islands, cruise ships only call at about 8 of them — the ports of Nassau and Freeport, and several private islands and destinations owned by the cruise lines that offer the ultimate beach day of sorts.

READ: Best Family-Friend Things To Do in Nassau

The Bahamas are a popular destination for short cruises. Just a couple hundred miles off the coast of Miami and Fort Lauderdale, their proximity makes them a perfect stop on three- or four-night cruises. Some longer Caribbean cruises will also call in the Bahamas, particularly at the cruise lines’ private islands.

FLORIDA TO NASSAU SCREENSHOT

Most people think of Nassau when they think of the Bahamas, and that makes sense given that the vast majority of cruise ships visiting the region are going to stop in Nassau. But there’s far more to the Bahamas than just Nassau.

Cruise ships have been calling in Nassau and Freeport for decades. While neither town is particularly attractive or well-kept and there are signs of poverty, both ports are relatively safe if you take basic precautions (not flashing cash or jewelry, staying on the main routes, avoiding the drug trade, etc.).

bahamas 4683522 1920

Nassau is home to some of the world’s best-known casinos and water parks at the Atlantis resort on Paradise Island, and there’s no shortage of bars, beaches, or bikinis in both Freeport and Nassau.

Water sports are also a standout here; while you can also snorkel and dive in Bermuda, the warmer waters of the Bahamas provide a more spectacular underwater panorama.

Best Time to Cruise to the Bahamas

There’s really never a bad time to cruise to the Bahamas. The weather is warm and humid all year. The summers are rainier, and hurricane season is from June 1 through November 30, which are things to keep in mind when planning your getaway.

For the absolute best experience, consider January through mid-February, when most of the US is dealing with frigid weather, but before the hard-partying spring breakers arrive.

Beaches in the Bahamas

starfish 1122849 1920

Nassau’s Cable Beach, named for the underwater telephone cable to the US that was laid here in 1892, is a 2.5-mile-long stretch of sand that draws visitors from around the world.

Love Beach attracts Nassau locals thanks to the natural rock pools and abundant snorkeling opportunities here.

Cabbage Beach, on Paradise Island, is a great spot to spend the day sunbathing, though it can get crowded on days when a lot of ships are in port. The slightly more secluded Paradise Beach, also on Paradise Island, can sometimes offer a bit more of a respite from the throngs of tourists.

On Freeport, Taino Beach is known for its delectable fish fry which draws as big a crowd as the sun-drenched sand; if you don’t want to compete for space with those looking for fish and chips, check out Xanadu Beach, not far from the cruise port.

To Sum It Up

When it comes to choosing whether to sail to Bermuda or the Bahamas, it’s completely based on what you’re looking for in a cruise. Both have their standout features over the other, and both are great places for both adults and families to enjoy. Weigh them against each other based on what port you want to cruise from, what activities are most important to you and how much you’re willing to spend.

Top Bahamas FAQs

When’s the best time to take a cruise to The Bahamas?

Celebrity Cruises sails to The Bahamas year-round. The peak season is from December to early spring, while May and June tend to be wetter. Rain tends to fall in the late afternoon in short, sharp showers, so this shouldn’t be a deterrent from traveling.

Hurricane season is typically from June to November although, fortunately, The Bahamas is rarely affected by hurricanes. There are many systems in place to detect any hurricane weather along your route, ensuring your ship’s captain and crew will be able to chart a path around any bad weather or make modifications to the itinerary to keep you safe. Celebrity’s state-of-the-art ships are built for stability, keeping movement in rough seas to a minimum.

See our blog post about cruising during hurricane season for more information.

Do I need a passport?

It is the responsibility of each guest to identify and obtain all required travel documents and have them available at the pier when necessary. Before leaving home, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the required travel documents you will be asked to provide prior to boarding the ship. You’ll find more information here .

Not all Bahamas cruises require a passport. If you are an American citizen traveling from the U.S. to The Bahamas or Mexico on a closed-loop cruise, starting and ending at the same U.S. port, a state-issued ID and an original U.S. birth certificate are sufficient.

On Bahamas cruises that call at other Caribbean ports, you can enter with your U.S. passport book, passport card, Trusted Traveler card (Nexus, SENTRI, or FAST), or an enhanced driver’s license. See our blog post for more information.

What should I pack for a cruise to The Bahamas?

When packing for a cruise to The Bahamas, you’ll need clothing for a warm, sometimes humid climate. Bring plenty of beachwear, a sun hat, sunglasses, coverups, water shoes if you’re visiting coral beaches, and reef-friendly sunblock.

If you book a snorkeling excursion, all gear will be provided. If there are places where you may want to snorkel independently, consider bringing your own equipment.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through coverups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features one to two more “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.

What are some things I can do on my cruise?

The Bahamas offers a range of activities to enjoy during your cruise. In Nassau, you could relax on beautiful beaches on Pearl Island or the Blue Lagoon. Join a watercolor painting class, snorkel over coral reefs, and even swim with friendly pigs. Learn about Nassau’s history, and sample conch fritters, the local specialty. If you’re traveling with kids, you could spend a day exploring Aquaventure waterpark at Atlantis Paradise Island and its waterslides, pools, river rapids, and vast aquarium.

In Bimini, you could relax on a pristine beach in an exclusive resort and swim in the warm, crystal-clear water. If you prefer a more active day, you could hand-feed wild stingrays, swim among reef sharks, or snorkel over the wreck of the Sapona, now colonized by tropical fish.

Perfect Day at CocoCay, our award-winning private island, is the place where you can be as adventurous or as indulgent as you wish. Fly down the tallest waterslide in North America, or whizz along a zipline. Take in the views from 450 feet above the shore in a helium balloon. Enjoy swimming in the largest freshwater lagoon pool in the Caribbean. Or elevate your experience with a luxurious private cabana, either on the powdery beach at Chill Island or perched directly over the aquamarine water.

How long are Bahamas cruises?

Cruises to The Bahamas are three to six nights long. On the shortest Bahamas cruises, you will have a day to explore Nassau and a full day to enjoy the many amenities of your Celebrity Cruises ship.

Other short cruises include Bimini and CocoCay, or a different combination of Key West and Nassau. Slightly longer voyages of five nights visit Key West, Bimini, and CocoCay. On a six-night voyage from Tampa, meanwhile, you will visit Nassau and Bimini and have three full days to enjoy the luxurious amenities of the ship.

What ports do you visit?

We visit three ports in The Bahamas: Nassau, Bimini, and Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s award-winning private island.

What can I do on board the ship?

Celebrity’s luxurious ships offer a wealth of activities. Bask by the shimmering pool, join a yoga or meditation class in the Fitness Center, or indulge in a blissful treatment in the Spa.

You’ll find a wide variety of places to dine, with menus crafted by our Michelin-starred chef. Enjoy BBQ specialties at the al fresco Lawn Club Grill (on Celebrity Silhouette and Celebrity Reflection) and marvel at the antics of the 3D characters who “prepare” your dinner in Le Petit Chef.

Enjoy the ship’s upscale bars and lounges, from the lively Martini Bar, where skilled mixologists entertain as they prepare your cocktail, to the beautiful Sunset Bar, a popular gathering place for pre-dinner drinks with friends, with infinite views of the blue ocean. You’ll find live music all over the ship late into the night, whether you want to dance, listen to jazz, or attend a Broadway-quality show in the Theatre.

Elevate your experience on board by choosing The Retreat , where you’ll luxuriate in a beautiful suite and have access to an exclusive lounge and the exceptional Luminae at the Retreat restaurant.

Bahamas vs. Bermuda: Which Is Right for You?

cruise bahamas and bermuda

While flights into L.F. Wade International Airport in Bermuda and Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau (the capital of the Bahamas) are plentiful year-round, both destinations are faster to reach from the east coast in the U.S., rather than the west. In either case, you’ll need a passport if you’re traveling by air.

Bermuda: Taking a quick long weekend jaunt to Bermuda from the east coast is doable. Flights from New York City are only about two hours Exploring Bermuda upon arriving is also fairly easy. That’s partially due to the fact that it’s relatively small, but it’s also thanks to the public buses, which are clean, inexpensive, and run frequently on convenient tourist routes. Renting a moped is a popular option for seeing the island. No special license is required, though driving on the left side of the sometimes narrow, winding roads can take some getting used to. Or, folks can opt to rent an electric mini-car instead. You won’t find any traditional cars to available to rent here.

Bahamas: Flying into Nassau from any major city on the east coast is an equally simple proposition. It takes less than three hours from New York City, and from Miami, you barely get up to cruising altitude before beginning the descent. You can even take a ferry from Fort Lauderdale. It’s not surprising that the Bahamas sees far fewer visitors from the west coast, as Californians are looking at a six-and-a-half-hour journey that includes at least two legs. Just as many visitors arrive via cruise ship as they do by plane. Cruise lines offer many itineraries from east coast cities that make a stop in the Bahamas. Once in the Bahamas, most visitors opt to get around by taxi, which are prevalent. Rental car companies abound. The local jitney bus is also an option, as are ferries and water taxis, depending on where you’re headed.

Beaches in Bermuda and the Bahamas

The Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort, Bahamas

Beaches are probably a top consideration, if you’ve narrowed your vacation options down to the Bahamas and Bermuda. The primary point of difference is geography. The Bahamas is a coral reef archipelago consisting of around 700 islands, while Bermuda is a much smaller volcanic archipelago, the entirety of which is a mere 21 square miles. With that in mind, the number of beaches in the Bahamas is naturally greater than in Bermuda. Quantity aside, the beaches you’ll find in either place are Instagram-worthy.

Bermuda: Arguably the best swimming beaches in Bermuda can be found in Southampton Parish , though the sandy stretches in Hamilton Parish have gentle waves, making them popular among families with younger kids. Horseshoe Bay Beach on the southeast coast — one of the many pink-sand beaches in Bermuda — is a favorite. It has plenty of amenities, including a bar, beach shop, concession stand, pleasant bathrooms, changing rooms, and showers. Elbow Beach is another clean, uncrowded slice of heaven for those set on finding that famous rosy sand. At Sea Glass Beach, it’s easy to spot the colorful, shiny little gems in the clear, shallow water and at the water line.

Bahamas: The options for beaches with turquoise water and white powdery sand seem nearly endless here. The sandy stretches on Harbour Island are a top pick, offering memorable sunset views. The island is also home to a 20-acre bird sanctuary. Two other contenders are Cape Santa Maria Beach, known for its incredible snorkeling, and Cabbage Beach, located on Paradise Island . The Cabbage Beach crowds (and local vendors) can get thick at the Atlantis’ Coral Towers , though. For a more secluded beach experience, walk east toward the One&Only Ocean Club .

Weather in the Bahamas and Bermuda

Pool at Rosewood Baha Mar

Bermuda: Thanks to its position in the Gulf Stream, squarely in the Atlantic Ocean, Bermuda has predictable, temperate (read: practically perfect) weather. It typically doesn’t get any cooler than 60 degrees and no hotter than 85 degrees. It tends to be less humid than the Bahamas, and receives less rain. And while Bermuda is certainly not immune to hurricanes, its location keeps it relatively protected. For more information, take a look at our guide on what you can expect each month in Bermuda .

Bahamas: Temperatures run in the high 80s or low 90s in the summer, and mid-70s in the “winter.” Those balmy temperatures come with humidity that won’t win any points with those who hate feeling sticky. The peak hurricane season runs from July through October, bringing a higher chance of rain. They’re not infrequent here, with one sideswiping the region every other year, on average, and making a direct hit every four years. For more information, take a look at our guide on what you can expect each month in the Bahamas .

Food in the Bahamas and Bermuda

Banana Bay Restaurant, Grand Bahama, The Bahamas

Bermuda:   You’ll find no chain restaurants to speak of in Bermuda. (“To speak of” is in deference to a lone KFC, operating in a loophole in the regulation blocking international chain restaurants from Bermuda.) This fact can disappoint or thrill, depending on one’s perspective. Instead, you’ll find an array of uniquely Bermudian restaurants, from casual eateries to upscale establishments. You’ll also have no trouble finding cozy British-inspired pubs (and cute spots for tea and crumpets), thanks to Bermuda’s British roots. A favorite includes The Swizzle Inn, which displays visitor logs dating back to the 1970s. It’s the home of Bermuda’s national drink, a heady cocktail of Gosling’s rum and fruit juices.

Bahamas:  Hungry vacationers can take their pick of, well, just about anything in the Bahamas, from white-glove service at the Bahamian Club in Nassau to casual beachside cafes to McDonald’s, Burger King, Dunkin Donuts, and Wendy’s. Seafood rules menus here, with conch, grouper, rock lobster, and fish-based stews making frequent appearances. Rice and sometimes grits are the go-to side dish.

Things to Do in the Bahamas and Bermuda

cruise bahamas and bermuda

Bermuda: More Martha’s Vineyard than Montego Bay, Bermuda is home to plenty of spots to grab a nightcap, though it doesn’t have much of a late-night party scene. In Hamilton, Cafe Cairo is one of two bars open until 3 a.m. (the other is Docksider). Calico Jack’s Floating Bar, which hosts nightly DJs and is permanently docked in the Royal Naval Dockyard, is worth a look. Despite a recent push toward introducing gaming in Bermuda, efforts stalled and there are still no casinos.

Bahamas: Nightclubs presided over by DJs and a young, partying crowd are abundant here, as are myriad casual bars. You’ll also find casinos, which draw occasional and serious gamblers alike. Many head to the casino at The Royal at Atlantis and stay well into the night.

Safety in the Bahamas and Bermuda

Nassau, Bahamas

Bermuda: According to the U.S. Department of State , Bermuda presents a low threat, with the most recent statistics showing overall crime having decreased.

Bahamas: The U.S. Department of State recently issued a Level 2 travel warning for the Bahamas , advising travelers to exercise increased caution. The warning cited armed robberies, sexual assault, fraud, and watercraft safety violations as major concerns. While those sorts of alerts can’t be ignored, it’s also true that the vast majority of tourists return home from the Bahamas safely and without incident. Common sense should prevail here, as it should anywhere you travel. For instance, if you are leaving a restaurant after dark, take a cab back to your hotel rather than walking.

Travel Costs in the Bahamas and Bermuda

Beach at Grotto Bay Beach Resort, Hamilton Parish, Bermuda

Bermuda: There’s no getting around it: Bermuda isn’t the best bet for those with a tight vacation budget. Everything, from gas for the mopeds to your Dark n’ Stormy at the bar, is likely to be costly. Like Hawaii, nearly everything has to be imported.

Bahamas: Vacationing at a popular tourist destination like the Bahamas is not going to be flat-out cheap. However, those wanting a fun beach vacation that’s still somewhat of a bargain have a far better shot of succeeding in the Bahamas than Bermuda. That’s not to say you won’t find $8 water bottles at hotels in the Bahamas (did someone say Atlantis?), but there is a wider range of options here. Plus, the region’s proximity to the mainland mean you can avoid overpriced items.

The 25 Best Islands in the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas in 2022

The best islands in the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas run the gamut from off-the-grid hideaways to ultra-luxe retreats, according to Travel + Leisure readers.

cruise bahamas and bermuda

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite islands in the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas .

The Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas are a delightful mélange of islands — sunny stalwarts with shimmering blue waters, palm-fringed shores, and ultra-luxe resorts. But for all their common denominators, there's plenty that makes each island stand out, too. Some are rustic and rugged, bereft of any modern meddling, while others are well-developed oases with lots of shops, restaurants, and hotels to choose from. And Travel + Leisure 's list of the region's best islands this year is proof of its vast and varied offerings.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated islands according to their activities and sights, natural attractions and beaches, food, friendliness, and overall value.

The British Virgin Islands dominate this year's rankings, with Jost Van Dyke (No. 9), Virgin Gorda (No. 16), and Tortola (No. 23) all making appearances. The Bahamas, too, are well-represented — the Exumas (No. 4) earned marks from one reader for the "prettiest water and beaches you will ever see," while Eleuthera (No. 24) was touted as "enchanting, pristine, and beautiful"

Several readers also raved about the beaches and turquoise waters on Anguilla (No. 3), with one calling it "paradise found." Another said, "Anguilla is my favorite spot on this earth. Nothing compares. The beaches, the people, the food, the enjoyment…total bliss."

Meanwhile, Grenada (No. 6) got a nod for its "incredibly kind people," and runner-up St. Vincent and the Grenadines (No. 2) received praise for "fantastic water excursions."

At No. 5, St. Lucia — home to the majestic Pitons, beautiful beaches, and plenty of chocolate and rum — was described as "a great spot for active travelers on a romantic escape." Another T+L reader said, "St. Lucia is an untouched gem in many ways, a very beautiful island with a delightful culture and many activities to enjoy."

But the No. 1 spot, according to this year's World's Best Awards survey, belongs to Dominica, concisely described by one reader as "stunning." Read more about Dominica, and get the full list of best islands in the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas below.

1. Dominica

Nicknamed the Nature Island, Dominica is not defined by the combo of pristine white sand and shiny resorts that's often synonymous with the Caribbean. Instead, the anything-but-average island lures eco-travelers with a jumble of rain forests, volcanoes, hot springs, thunderous waterfalls, and black-sand beaches. It has an undiscovered quality that can be rare not only in the region, but the world over. It's a dream for hikers, snorkelers, and all kinds of adventurers, but the island also offers pockets of over-the-top luxury, including this year's best resort hotel in the Caribbean — Secret Bay, tucked within the rain forest with tree-house-style villas, jaw-dropping nature views, and private plunge pools.

Bahamas vs Bermuda: Which Island Should You Visit?

By: Author Dan Bagby

Posted on Published: June 19, 2023

Looking for a dream island to spend your summer holidays? The Bahamas and Bermuda are paradise destinations not far from the east coast of the United States. Even though they both enjoy blue skies and sunshine most of the year, they each have their own unique charm.

Here we’ll have a look at the aspects to consider when deciding which island you should go to.

Bahamas & Bermuda: Location and Accessibility

Receiving 6.5 million tourists every year, the Bahamas is a popular beach destination composed of more than 700 islands and cays located in the Atlantic Ocean 180 miles from Miami.

The main airport is located in the capital Nassau and you can find direct flights from Miami for $200, from New York for $400 and from Europe for $800.There are also ferries that take you from Fort Lauderdale to Freeport in just 2.5 hours for around $100 each way.

cruise bahamas and bermuda

The Bermudas is much smaller than the Bahamas and consists of a group of 7 main islands and 170 smaller islets located in the Atlantic Ocean, 870 miles east of the United States.

There are direct flights to the Bermudas from New York and Miami for $350, while a ticket from Europe costs around $800.

When To Visit The Bahamas

The Bahamas have warm temperatures the whole year, with a hot and humid summer season, and a dry winter.

The Bahamas are within the hurricane belt so it’s important to be smart about  when to go. The peak hurricane season goes from July to November, so it’s better to avoid these months.

Considering that the high season goes from December to February and prices are at their highest, March and April are the best months to visit. The Bahamas are a popular spring break destination among Americans so if you want a relaxed holidays try to avoid this period if possible.

Even though it is less affected by hurricanes, it’s advisable to avoid the summer months, making March and April the best time to visit Bermuda.

Bahamas vs Bermuda: Attractions

The Bahamas are a fantastic choice for beach lovers. There are plenty of options with turquoise water and white sand but some of the best ones are the Pink Sand Beach in Harbour Island, Cabbage Beach in Paradise Island, or Tahiti and Great Guana Cay Beach in Abacos.

Other sites worth seeing are the city of Nassau with its colonial heritage, Fort Fincastle and Lucayan National Park with one of the longest cave systems in the world.

Also known as the playground of the rich, Bermuda is a fantastic destination for those looking for beautiful beaches, great conditions for kayaking, and amazing coral reefs. One of the must-sees is definitely Horseshoe Bay with its turquoise waters and pink sand.

cruise bahamas and bermuda

Despite its small size (only 21 square miles), this nation is home to the historic town of St. George, and the capital city Hamilton which has both a traditional and metropolitan feel. Other activities include the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, the famous Crystal Caves and world-class golf courses. Bermuda is great for kids , couples or the whole family.

Bahamas vs Bermuda: Accommodations

The Bahamas offer a wide selection of accommodation options from local hotels to international chain resorts. A room in a cheap hotel starts at $100 per night, while a beach resort will set you back $300.

Bermuda doesn’t have as many options as the Bahamas and it tends to be more expensive. A cheap double room in a local hotel costs between $150 and $200, while a night in a beach resort starts at $350.

Bahamas vs Bermuda: Cuisine

Bahamian cuisine has southern American and Caribbean influences and is known for its love of spices. The most popular dish in the Bahamas is the conch, a large mollusk that can be served in different ways: salad (raw conch with lime juice, tomato, onion, and vegetables), fritters (deep-fried and mixed with spices), and in stews and soups. Other must-tries are lobster, baked crab, and souse (stew with lime, hot chili pepper, vegetables, and chicken).

Bermudian cuisine combines English and Portuguese influences with some local elements and fish is usually the star ingredient. Some of the most popular dishes are fish chowder (fish broth with vegetables and spices); grouper or cod fish usually steamed and served with potatoes, vegetables, and bananas; or the traditional rum cake with vanilla & lemon.

Bahamas vs Bermuda: Cost

These two aren’t the cheapest options out there. The Bahamas is a popular tourist destination that offers more variety in terms of accommodation and dining. Staying in mid-range hotels and eating in good restaurants will set you back around $150 per person per day.

bahamas honeymoon sunset

Bermuda, on the other hand, is a more expensive destination. The alternatives for accommodation are limited and transportation within the island is expensive so expect to spend between $200 and $250 per person per day.

Several companies offer cruises that go to these islands and sometimes the packages they offer are great value for money if you enjoy an all-inclusive style holiday.

The Verdict

Both the Bahamas and Bermuda are stunning places with different things to offer. The former has a larger number of amazing beaches and a wider variety of accommodation and dining options making it the best choice for those who want to enjoy a beautiful place without spending a fortune.

Bermuda is a more upscale alternative. It has some excellent beaches and cool cities to visit but it doesn’t have many cheap hotels and restaurants, so your time here will be more costly.

Here's when you need (and don't need) a passport to cruise.

It's the type of sailing – closed-loop or open-loop – that largely determines whether or not you need a passport to cruise.

Do You Need a Passport for a Cruise?

Passports on a map showing cruise lanes.

Getty Images

A passport isn't always required for cruising.

To determine whether or not you need a passport to cruise, you first need to figure out if the itinerary is closed-loop or open-loop (also known as open-jaw).

Closed-loop cruise: A closed-loop cruise typically doesn't require a passport since it begins and ends in the same U.S. port (though there are some exceptions to this rule).

Example: Royal Caribbean International 's seven-night Western Caribbean & Perfect Day cruise stops in several countries – the Bahamas, Jamaica, Haiti and Grand Cayman – but the itinerary is considered closed-loop because it starts and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Open-loop cruise: An open-loop cruise begins in one U.S. port and ends in a different U.S. port.

Example: Carnival Cruise Line 's 16-day Panama Canal from Seattle itinerary is not considered closed-loop because it departs from Seattle and completes its journey in New Orleans.

All of the above regulations have been determined by the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative: a plan by the departments of State and Homeland Security that determines which documents are acceptable for proving identity and citizenship when entering the United States.

Where to cruise without a passport

There are several destinations where you can cruise without a passport on a closed-loop sailing. They include the following:

  • The Bahamas

When looking at cruises to these locations, be mindful of the home ports. The Bahamas, Mexico, Bermuda, the Caribbean and Canada are all foreign ports, which means they only qualify for the passport exception if they are a stop along your cruise itinerary . If the cruise originates in any of these countries, it is likely you will need a passport.

Since Alaska, Hawaii and New England are all U.S. destinations, any closed-loop routes departing from these locations will not require a passport. However, keep in mind that it can be hard to find closed-loop cruises originating in Hawaii or Alaska.

To find closed-loop itineraries for a Hawaiian voyage or Alaskan cruise , try searching for sailings departing from major cities on the West Coast, like Seattle or Los Angeles . By contrast, quite a few closed-loop cruises leave from New England ports, but they are often marketed as Canadian cruises.

When you need a passport for closed-loop cruises

Some cruise itineraries include foreign ports that require a passport for disembarkation. This is most commonly an issue for travelers on a closed-loop Caribbean cruise. Barbados , Guadeloupe , Haiti, Martinique , St. Barts , and Trinidad and Tobago all require U.S. citizens to present a valid passport to disembark and enter the country, despite WHTI regulations not requiring a passport for these destinations. Labadee, Royal Caribbean's private island , is an exception and does not require a passport despite its location in Haiti.

If your itinerary includes a country requiring a U.S. passport, your cruise line will require you to have the passport at check-in. Note that your passport must not expire within six months of your arrival in a foreign country or else it won't be considered valid for international travel.

Read: The Easiest Way to Renew Your Passport

Acceptable forms of ID

All travelers – U.S. citizens and foreign nationals alike – must present documents that show identity and citizenship when entering the United States. A U.S. passport can show both. If you don't have one or don't want to bring one, be aware that you may need to present more than one document.

U.S. citizens 16 and older

If you're a U.S. citizen age 16 or older sailing on a closed-loop cruise without your passport, you will need a government-issued photo ID like a driver's license. In addition, you must present a document that proves your U.S. citizenship. These include:

  • Passport card
  • State-issued enhanced driver's license (EDL)
  • Government-issued birth certificate
  • Trusted Traveler Program card (NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST)
  • American Indian Card (Form I-872) or Enhanced Tribal ID Card

The Trusted Traveler Programs are risk-based programs to facilitate the entry of travelers who have been vetted and preapproved. Most of these programs will provide you with a machine-readable card that allows you to pass through border checkpoints quickly. Keep in mind, some of these IDs are only available to travelers 16 and older.

Read: TSA Precheck vs. Global Entry

U.S. citizens younger than 16

U.S. citizens younger than 16 are only required to present proof of citizenship, such as one of the following documents:

  • Original, notarized or certified copy of their government-issued birth certificate
  • Consular Report of Birth Abroad issued by U.S. Department of State
  • Certificate of Naturalization issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

Read: How to Get a Passport for Kids

Non-U.S. citizens

If you are a lawful permanent resident (or LPR) of the United States, you are required to present a permanent resident card or other valid evidence of permanent residence status.

Non-U.S. citizens, with the exception of Canadians and Mexicans, are not subject to passport exceptions, so a valid passport will need to be provided. Canadian citizens can present a valid passport, Enhanced Driver's License or Trusted Traveler Program card. Mexican citizens must present a passport with a visa or a Border Crossing Card.

Unacceptable forms of ID

While most common forms of identification are accepted, there are a few exceptions. U.S. military identification cards and U.S. Merchant Mariner documents are valid forms of identification, but only when traveling on official orders or in conjunction with official maritime business, so it is unlikely they will be accepted when traveling on a cruise.

Here are some other documents that will not be accepted as proof of citizenship:

  • Voter registration cards
  • Social Security cards
  • Baptismal papers
  • Hospital certificates of birth (for anyone older than a newborn)

It is important to note that many of the permitted forms of identification, such as a passport card or EDL, are only accepted at land and sea border crossings. Unforeseen circumstances, such as a medical air evacuation, may cause you to return to the U.S. by air travel. In this case, these documents won't be accepted when you try to reenter at the border crossing.

To avoid extra delays in your return to the U.S. following unforeseen travel complications, the Department of State recommends that everyone taking a cruise from the United States carry a valid passport book in case of emergency.

Where can I cruise without a passport?

At TPG, we always recommend cruising with a passport, but there are many reasons why you might want to set sail without one.

What if an opportunity pops up on short notice, and you don't have a passport yet? Or what if you forgot to renew yours when it expired? What if it's only a three-night cruise to the Bahamas, and the passport application fee is almost as much as the cruise fare? Or, maybe you have children nearing age 16 and can't justify paying for passports that will only be good for five years.

First of all, do you even need a passport to cruise ? The answer is often but not always. You have options to cruise without a passport because not every sailing requires them. Thanks to an international agreement called the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative , U.S. citizens can cruise on certain itineraries within North American countries using government-issued identification (like a valid driver's license) and proof of citizenship (like a government-issued birth certificate).

The cruises that you don't need a passport for are closed-loop sailings, which depart from and return to the same port within the U.S. One-way sailings from one U.S. port to another or from a U.S. port to a foreign one would require a passport.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Before we go further, let's clarify that when we talk about cruising without a passport, we're referring to pricey passport books that some travelers do not wish to purchase. Passport cards can also be used for identification when cruising in all the places we are about to discuss; these cards are a low-cost alternative to traveling with your driver's license and birth certificate.

Let's look at the options for where you can cruise without a passport.

Cruising to Alaska is one of the easiest ways to experience all the state offers. You'll have opportunities to see glaciers and wildlife; stroll the streets of charming coastal towns; eat your fill of local crab legs and salmon; and enjoy nature on a kayak, zip line or hike.

If you're interested in cruising to Alaska without a passport, look for itineraries that begin (and end) in Seattle , San Francisco or southern California ports, such as Los Angeles or Long Beach, California. The most common length for these closed-loop Alaska cruises operated by the major cruise lines is seven nights. Cruises early or late in the season might be only four or five nights, and trips departing from LA are usually 14 nights.

What if you really want to cruise one-way from Canada to Alaska (or vice versa)? Although Canada prefers U.S. citizens who arrive by sea or land to have a passport book, it is not required as long as they have proper identification and proof of citizenship. The U.S., however, requires one of the following WHTI-approved forms of identification for entries by land or sea: passport card, enhanced driver's license, I-872 American Indian card or trusted traveler program IDs like Nexus, Sentri and Fast.

Technically, if you have one of those forms of ID but not a passport book, you can take a one-way Alaska cruise — as long as you don't have to fly to or from Canada.

More complications arise for non-passport holders who book shore excursions that involve crossing from Alaska to Canada. White Pass and Yukon Route train rides are good examples. White Pass and Yukon Route allows cruise passengers to go on the three-hour train excursion without a passport but doesn't allow them to take any longer routes. That's their policy, not a legal requirement.

This means that Alaska cruises are one instance when the passport card would be a handy alternative to traveling with both an ID card and a birth certificate. It opens up one-way itineraries.

A cruise to the Caribbean transports you to tropical islands bathed in turquoise waters. Whether you seek warm beaches, cool drinks, water sports or cultural education, you can find a Caribbean cruise to fit the bill.

It's easy to cruise without a passport in the Caribbean: Just book one of the many closed-loop, round-trip sailings departing from a U.S. port. Most major cruise lines offer sailings that range between three and 15 nights from ports like Galveston, Texas; New Orleans; multiple ports in Florida (including Miami and Fort Lauderdale); Charleston, South Carolina; Baltimore; Bayonne, New Jersey; and New York City.

Most Caribbean islands participate in the WHTI, but it's always best to check the details specific to the ports of call included in your itinerary. Don't forget that islands such as Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix are U.S. territories, so visits never require passports for U.S. citizens.

Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory, lying 643 miles off the coast of North Carolina. Hop on a cruise ship for a direct route to the island's famous beaches and golf courses. Spring and summer are the prime seasons to visit, but cruises are possible throughout the year.

Cruising without a passport to Bermuda is also easy. Apart from a few isolated cruises stopping in Bermuda as they come or go from other destinations, there are no one-way Bermuda cruises to confuse the situation. If you plan to sail without a passport, be wary of any Bermuda cruise longer than 10 nights. Those are likely to be point-to-point cruises that happen to include Bermuda.

Passport-free cruises to Bermuda include ample five- to 10-night sailings from the East Coast ports of Baltimore, Bayonne, Boston and Manhattan. Occasional itineraries also pop up throughout the Bermuda season departing from Norfolk, Virginia; Charleston; and the Florida ports of Miami, Port Canaveral (near Orlando) and Jacksonville.

Related: Does it make sense to take a short cruise to Bermuda?

Long known for delightful strands of beach and access to every imaginable form of water fun under the subtropical sun, the Bahamas are the ideal destination for easy and quick cruise vacations.

Skip the passport on three- to five-night Bahamas cruises sailing round-trip on most major cruise lines from the eastern Florida ports of Jacksonville, Port Canaveral, Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades and Miami.

A few longer, seven- to 15-night itineraries stop in the Bahamas on their way into the Caribbean. Departures from Bayonne, Manhattan, Baltimore and Charleston will often get you weeklong Bahamas itineraries, as will sailings from Tampa, Galveston and New Orleans.

Our southern neighbor boasts two coastlines of cruise fun. Like most tropical cruise destinations, the top draws are the beaches and the ocean; however, cruise ports in Mexico also give you access to ancient Mayan ruins, delicious cuisine and an abundance of land activities.

Mexico's Caribbean and Pacific coasts are both accessible to cruisers who do not hold passports. If you want to visit Mexico's eastern shores, you can find three- to 15-night cruises to Costa Maya, Cozumel and Progreso. Sailings depart Florida from Miami, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral; you can also find itineraries from New Orleans, Galveston and Mobile, Alabama.

Western Mexico, often referred to as the Mexican Riviera, includes the ports of Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Ensenada, among others. Cruises with several major lines depart San Diego, San Pedro port in LA and Long Beach for voyages lasting anywhere from three to 10 nights.

From water sports to American history and Hawaiian culture, there's a lot to experience on a Hawaii cruise . The best part might be the ability to hop from island to island, sampling the flavors of each as you go.

Closed-loop Hawaii cruises that don't require passports come in two varieties. The short option is to fly to Honolulu and take a seven- or 10-night cruise on Norwegian Cruise Line 's Pride of America. This is the only large cruise ship allowed to operate entirely within the Hawaiian Islands without visiting a foreign port.

Small-ship cruise operator UnCruise Adventures also offers seven-night, inter-island Hawaiian sailings. The American-flagged ships only cruise to and from U.S. ports, so no passport is needed, as would be the case on any domestic trip.

The long-cruise options consist of 14- to 18-night round-trip sailings from San Diego, LA (Long Beach and San Pedro) and San Francisco. You won't need a passport for these closed-loop sailings, but you do need to be prepared for multiple days at sea as you cross the Pacific from California to Hawaii.

Beware of 20-plus-night cruises that are round-trip sailings from the West Coast and would seem to fit the bill for closed-loop cruises that don't require passports. Most of these cruises don't work because they also include stops in French Polynesia, which is outside of the WHTI agreement. Passports are required for the islands in the South Pacific, which means they're required for the entire cruise.

Related: The best Hawaii cruises for every type of traveler

Canada and New England

Cruises up North America's East Coast allow you to take in historical sights of early Americana, stand atop rugged cliffs on the coast of Nova Scotia or revel in the French culture of Quebec.

Mainstream cruise lines operate numerous cruises along the U.S. and Canadian coasts that don't require passports. These depart from the ports of Bayonne, Baltimore, Boston, Manhattan, Brooklyn and occasionally Norfolk. The majority of these New England and Canada cruises are weeklong fall sailings; however, a handful depart at other times of the year or are a touch longer, ranging from eight to 10 nights.

Related: The best cruises to Canada and New England

Some cruise lines also offer one-way cruises in both directions between Canada and New England. These itineraries, like Alaska cruises, might be possible without a passport book. This is the case as long as your plans don't include flying into or out of Canada and your cruise line allows you to cruise with either a passport card or other acceptable form of identification and proof of citizenship.

We checked with a few lines for you. Princess, Holland America and Celebrity all strongly recommend passport books, but they allow one of the WHTI forms of identification. Again, the passport card opens up one-way possibilities, assuming you aren't flying and your cruise only includes Canada and the U.S.

Bottom line

While cruising with a passport is always recommended, it's not required by law in certain circumstances. Closed-loop cruises from U.S. ports that visit Bermuda, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico are part of an international agreement that allows U.S. citizens to cruise without a passport. In these cases, government-issued identification and proof of U.S. citizenship are acceptable alternatives to a passport book.

Passport cards are an affordable and unquestionable alternative to carrying an ID and birth certificate. If you want to go this route, know they are not valid for travel by air into or out of any foreign country, including Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or Caribbean countries — which is the primary reason most travel advisers urge cruisers to have a passport book.

As we've shown, you have plenty of options for where to cruise without a passport, and many travelers do so without incident. However, anything from engine trouble on your cruise ship to bad weather or an accident in port might necessitate a flight home from a foreign country. This would put you in an awkward position if you didn't have a passport.

Plus, as much fun as simple round-trip cruises are, passports open up additional vacation possibilities in the form of longer, point-to-point and overseas trips. Don't dismiss registering for a passport, even as you consider where you can cruise without one.

THE BEST TIME TO VISIT BERMUDA

Discover what's the best months to visit bermuda, 1. chase the sunshine.

Horseshoe Bay Beach Sunset, Bermuda

Bermuda has a subtropical climate that makes it a sought-after destination for travelers all year long, but the most popular seasons to visit are in spring and summer, from April to October. The island comes to life during this time, with visitors from around the globe, colorful events, blooming flowers and endless activities. The island also grows warmer and can be intensely sunny, especially during the summer months when the temperature averages 85℉, so don't forget that sunscreen if you want to stretch out on the famed pink sand.

Water activities like snorkeling, scuba diving and swimming are very pleasant this time of year, when the water is warmest, and many sunseekers flock to Tobacco Bay, the Crystal Caves and Jobson's Cove.

If you visit during this stretch, you'll find fun events for the whole family, including the Bermuda Carnival in June and the Gombey Festival in September. Just remember that while these months offer the warmest weather and sunniest days along with a lively atmosphere, they're also the most popular, so you'll want to book tours in advance.

2. Weigh the allure of a slower pace

Explore exhibitions at the Bermuda Arts Centre in Hamilton.

If you're seeking a more relaxed and tranquil experience, the best time to visit Bermuda is during the shoulder seasons of late fall and early spring, when the island experiences fewer crowds, milder temperatures and a slower pace of life.

During the fall, Bermuda transitions from the busy summer season to a more mellow ambiance. The weather remains pleasant, though, with temperatures ranging from 65℉ to 75℉. This is the perfect time to visit if you're a nature lover who wants to explore the island's flora, history and culture. Stop by Southlands Park, Somers Garden or the Bermuda Historical Society Museum without having to worry about the heat or bustle of peak tourist months.

The spring shoulder season also offers a peaceful retreat, with vibrant flowers and refreshing breezes. You can immerse yourself in the island's natural beauty at the botanical gardens, embark on a scenic hike on the Railway Trail and take advantage of lower prices everywhere you go.

3. Consider exploring during cooler months

Bermuda National Museum

If you prefer even cooler temperatures, then the best time to visit Bermuda is during the winter season, from mid-December to March. These months are considered off-peak for tourism, but there are still a lot of benefits for travelers, such as milder weather and lower humidity. Adults traveling without children will also find fewer little ones onboard.

During winter in Bermuda, the island turns into a refreshing paradise without being too chilly. This is the best time for surfing; you can rent a surfboard and head to Horseshoe Bay for a lesson — or just watch the locals catch some waves.

Winter in Bermuda is also perfect for exploring the island's cultural and historical attractions, like the Royal Naval Dockyard and the National Museum of Bermuda. You'll enjoy lower rates and fewer crowds at many popular sites. Just remember that some businesses and attractions have shorter operating hours this time of year, so you'll want to plan your activities accordingly.

4. Look for the cheapest time to visit

Belizean Fish Soup Cooked in Coconut Milk

If you're a budget-conscious traveler, you might already know that the most affordable time to visit Bermuda is during the off-peak winter months — from mid-December to March. For a full experience that doubles as the cheapest Bermuda vacation possible, good options are between mid-January and mid-March. This cooler period — when the average temperature hovers around 70℉ — offers lower prices; cruises, tour companies, restaurants and museums may offer discounted rates, making this the best time to visit Bermuda on a budget.

Many golfers prefer to visit Bermuda between January and March because there are no crowds. Renowned clubs include Port Royal, Turtle Hill and Mid Ocean Club, where you can take your pick from available tee times.

Also, if you live on the East Coast, you'll find affordable cruises from New York City to Bermuda

5. Know your priorities

Rum Cocktail Offered in Caribbean Rum Distilleries

While Bermuda is a captivating destination year-round, some months may be less ideal for you depending on your goals. For those in search of hot temps and water sports, summer is the best time to visit Bermuda. For golfers and those who burn easily, the off-peak winter season may be better.

Another consideration is hurricane season, which extends officially from June to November. This time of year brings increased potential for storms and heavy rain in the region. Storms can also make the waters of the Atlantic choppier as you power toward the island from the East Coast — which is fun for those who enjoy the feeling of pitching and rolling, but may require some people to pack motion-sickness medication.

However, Bermuda's memorable cuisine is available all year. Regardless of when you come, you'll find fresh seafood dishes like fish chowder and codfish cakes, British options such as fish and chips and signature local drinks such as the Dark and Stormy and the Rum Swizzle, both of which use local rum as a key ingredient. Our advice? No matter when you come, plan to order a couple of these cocktails for a memorable toast to a fabulous vacation.
