Nairobi City Tour  in the Afternoon

You will be picked up from your hotel at 2.30pm Tour the principal landmarks, the Parliament buildings, City market, National museum and snake park.

Further down Harry Thuku Road is the Norfolk Hotel.  Historically, the Norfolk was "The Place" for starting safaris as way back in 1904.  Opposite the Norfolk is the Kenya Conservatoire of Music and the National Theatre.  Ahead is what was until very recently the only broadcasting stations in the country i.e. The Voice of Kenya (V.O.K now know as the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation). Branch on to Kijabe Street where many book shops and publishers are situated.

Enter Moi Avenue past the Old Salvation Army Building.  Turn into Muindi Mbingu Street past Jivanjee Gardens on the left, and the City Market to the right.  The City Market is housed in what was originally meant to be an aircraft hanger, but it was never used for this purpose.  Instead, curios, crafts and farm produce are sold here.  Drive down Banda Street past the largest Mosque in the country - the Jamia Mosque, and the McMillan Library built in pre-independent Kenya is our largest library.  This is run by our City Council.

Drive directly to Nairobi hill viewpoint from where you have a panoramic view of the city.  Continue on to "Gods corner", significant for the number of different churches situated in this area.

Rejoin Uhuru Highway on your way to the National Museum , a major International Centre for natural history and especially the study of human evolution.  Visit also the Snake Park .

 NB: Please note tours during the weekdays are prone to Traffic Jams within the city. Weekends are mostly suited to flow smoothly.

Short Overview

Whether it's a layover or an extra day at the start or the end of your safari, this full-day tour of Nairobi packs the very best East Africa's most cosmopolitan city has to offer into a single day.

You'll visit the Nairobi National Museum, the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, the Giraffe Centre, and the popular Bomas of Kenya during your day-long exploration of the Kenyan capital.

Ready to set out? Your adventure awaits!

DAY 1 - NAIROBI CITY TOUR

8 am: nairobi national museum.

You'll be picked up from your hotel after breakfast and proceed immediately to the National Museum of Kenya . A fascinating place to learn about Kenya's history and culture, the National Museum aims to share Kenya's rich cultural heritage with visitors to the city through a variety of exhibits, including Kenyan art, a hall dedicated to the Kenyan Independence war, and the prehistory of man, among others. You'll spend approximately an hour and a half here.

11 am: David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

You'll arrive at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust at 11 am. Sometimes known as the Elephant Orphanage, you'll have your chance to have an up-close and personal interaction with these adorable orphaned elephants. During your hour-long visit, you'll observe the resident baby elephants as they feed, exercise, and bathe. You even have the option to sponsor one of the orphans.

12, noon: Giraffe Centre

Your next stop will be the famous Giraffe Centre , where you'll have the rare opportunity to come face-to-face with these beautiful creatures. In this breeding centre for the Rothschild's Giraffe, as well as an education centre, lucky visitors might even get a kiss from these unique creatures!

1 pm: Lunch

You'll be spoiled with choice at lunch, among the world-famous Carnivore Restaurant , the local flavours of the Utamaduni Centre , or the family-friendly atmosphere of Mamba Villabe with its crocodile and ostrich farms.

Lunch is at your own expense. Ask your Shadows of Africa safari expert about including lunch in your quote.

2.30 pm: Bomas of Kenya

You'll wrap up your day with a visit to the famous Bomas of Kenya , a one of a kind living museum that aims to display the multitude of tribal cultures that make up Kenya's rich cultural tapestry. In addition to re-creations of traditional housing and displays of traditional arts and crafts, your tour will include a fascinating presentation of tribal dance and music that is not to be missing out on.

5 pm: Tour concludes

History of Nairobi: Founded in 1899, the city was handed capital status from Mombasa in 1905. Nairobi is the capital and largest city of Kenya. It is popularly known as the Green City in the Sun. Nairobi is also the capital of the Nairobi Province and of the Nairobi District. The city lies on the Nairobi

Some of the places to visit whilst in Nairobi include; the National Theatre, Phoenix Theatre, McMillan Memorial Library, Kenyatta International Conference Centre, Parliament Buildings, Nairobi National Park, the Snake Park, National Museum, Bomas of Kenya (for traditional dancing and tribal villages), Nairobi Races (horse racing on Sundays), and the National International Show (August/September/October).

Nairobi also has several modern cinemas in the city centre and two drive-in cinemas. The City Market on Muindi Mbingu Street is worth a visit if you are shopping for curios. Depending on how good your bartering is, you can get a good bargain be it soapstone carvings, wood carvings or other handicrafts. The city has not lost its sense of the past, with an excellent museum and the historical home of Karen Blixen, author of Out of Africa open to visitors.

Stroll through Utumaduni, a converted house that boasts around 15 arts and crafts stores, or the Souk, which houses an eclectic collection of paintings, leatherwork and photographic pieces. The Matbronze Wildlife Art Gallery is a must-see and is home to the first bronze foundry in East Africa. Be sure to explore the Marula Studios (known as the Flip-flop Shop), a recycle hub where discarded flip-flops are transformed into original works of art. This is an incredibly colourful entrepreneurial space.

For some truly scrumptious, fresh seafood enjoy a sublime lunch at the famous Tamarind Restaurant. Relish the catch of the day, and feast on tasty prawns, delicious crabs and delectable lobsters. After your delicious meal you can explore the Karen Blixen Museum, the farm that the Danish author of the famed memoir Out of Africa lived on from 1917 to 1931. Much of the 1985 Oscar-winning movie adaptation was shot on the grounds. A tour of the house is an intimate and beautiful experience.

After an adventure-filled day, unwind at one of Nairobi’s vibrant eateries. We recommend the Carnivore or Haandi, followed by a refreshing nightcap at Tamambo – do try a Dawa, Kenya’s iconic cocktail of vodka, fresh lime and honey, delicious! (All meals are for your own expense)

5 Days Mount Kenya Circumnavigation Trek Using Sirimon Chogoria Routes

Michael and the team are just amazing and made the trip as comfortable as possible. Michael the guide had so much knowledge about the animals and vegetation. The porters are super friendly and the chef made some amazing meals I didn’t expect to get on the mountain. The route was spectacular from start to finish, the last lodge was a an amazing place to finish off the trip.

Masai Mara Camping Safari

Our guide was great and interacted well with the group. He had lots of animal knowledge and found us some great animals. Our transport was a van but it made it there and back and wasn't too bad for game viewing. Plenty of space for the 6 of us. Accommodation is a basic tent with bed and mossie net but was all we really needed. Meals were good and there was always plenty. While the trip is advertised as 4 days, it's only 3. I would have enjoyed having an extra day to spend in the Mara.

I am really glad we did the best African safari for family provided by Voyage Kenya Tanzania Safari. Kenya and Tanzania were such beautiful countries. Our Kenya safari tour operator and director Mr. John was wonderful. The 4-star luxury lodges in Masai Mara and Serengeti were beyond expectation with great activities for kids of all ages.

7 Days, 6 Nights Safari To Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha And Amboseli With Complimentary First Night Accommodation at After 40 Hotel and free airport pickup.

We loved the variety of this tour - safari by vehicle, hot air balloon, bike, boat, and foot. The accommodations ranged from basic to good, so this tour is best for those who don’t need luxury accommodations, which we did not. The food was always very good and plentiful. We had 2 guides - Nathan and Tony, and both were excellent. They were friendly, knowledgeable, patient, and good drivers. The optional tours need to be updated on the description of the tour, as inflation has caused an increase in prices. The hot air balloon safari was $450/pp (a wonderful experience with a nice champagne picnic breakfast afterwards). The Massai village visit was $25/pp. We recommend both. Bring lots of cash for drinks, souvenirs, and tipping. We underestimated and ran out, but our guide made a stop at a bank for us to get more. Good communication and customer service from the tour company as well. Overall an incredible vacation. We will be back in Kenya in the future and would definitely use this company again.

Amazing experience!! best tour operator that deserves 10 stars!!Just returned from a 7-Day Tsavo West-Amboseli-Nakuru-Mara-Lodge tour (from Nairobi to Mombasa ) ended at Diani beach and had an incredible holiday and safari! I can't recommend CKC Tours and Travel highly enough. Manager John is very friendly, professional and helpful. I have booked a shared tour but ended up being just me for the last few days. The trip was amazing and very well organised with excellent hotel choices especially the various Sopa Lodges and the Killaguney Serena Lodge with nice rooms and delicious food . I saw the Big 5 and many more wonderful animals . My drivers were amazing at spotting them in the distance! The drivers also were very knowledgable and told me a lot about the animals and their country. The price of the tour is probably the best in Nairobi. Thank you CKC for making my dream come true ! 6 Day Kenya Cultural Safari

After seeing the Best Ever Food Tour visit at the Maasai Mara village in Amboseli, I was inspired to go! I contacted Emmanuel and he was instantly a wealth of knowledge. We communicated often about my trip so much that by the time we met, I felt as if I were amongst friends. Along with Emmanuel was Carlos Roy, our driver. Carlos and Emmanuel were incredibly knowledgeable about the Maasai people, the area and could answer all of my questions. Carlos is by far the best driver. He is considerate and has a great sense of humor. You definitely won't be bored as he introduces you to the "African massage"! On the tour, Emmanuel was able to translate my questions, arrange a time for me to personally interview the elder and much more! This tour was hands down one of my favorite experiences during my entire trip. I've been to another Maasai village and this by far was the most authentic. I felt as if I was truly able to experience the culture as well as gain an appreciation for their desire to keep up with today's technology while preserving their traditions and norms. I'm so glad I did this tour with Emmanuel and Carolos. I am a travel advisor and my goal is to send my clients seeking an authentic experience to tour with Emmanuel and Carlos in the future. My one piece of advice would be not to wait, book today because this is a really popular tour!!!
