Ultimately, Cruis'n USA is a dead conversion of a dead arcade game. Perhaps if Nintendo had waited to release a home version of the planned sequel, Cruis'n World (like they did with KI Gold, an enhanced version of Killer Instinct 2), this effort may have been worthwhile. --Jeff Gerstmann -- Copyright ©1999 GameSpot Inc. Cruis’n USA

Developer: Midway    Publisher: Nintendo     Released: October 31, 1996    Genre: Racing

The wait for the Nintendo 64 was completely unbearable for me back when it was first announced. I love the SNES and the thought of a 64-bit version of that blew my mind. Of course the reality of its library was far from that but I digress. While the system was years away both Cruis’n USA and Killer Instinct offered a glimpse of what we were supposed to expect. When they debuted in the arcade they mind melting. But by the time the home ports arrived they were less impressive. Cruis’n USA especially suffered; one could even say it was only average to begin with. The N64 version is not a good game by any stretch and on a system with far too many racing games you can easily skip this one.

The game gives you a choice of four cars initially with a further three unlocked through cheat codes. The first four span the most popular car manufacturers at the time with a Corvette, Ferrari, Jaguar, and a Hot Rod as your choice. I wish I could say I noticed a difference between them but truthfully due to the game’s handling they all feel identical. By completing the Cruise the USA mode you can earn new colors and higher specced versions of the starting lineup but I can’t see anyone playing through this more than once, even for completionists sake.

Cruis’n USA is a cross country road trip across the United States, beginning in San Francisco and ending in Washington D.C. Along the way the tracks span a number of popular cities and locations such as the Grand Canyon, Chicago, Beverly Hills, and the Redwood Forests of California. There is a decent amount of variety in the lineup but the problem is the course design is absolutely boring. Most tracks are incredibly straightforward with few wide turns and no split paths. The tracks are split into easy, medium, and expert level courses and the game spreads them out liberally on the way to the finish. The expert courses like Grand Canyon feature narrow roads and higher traffic. More of this would have made the game significantly better. The advent of 3d elevated the quality of racing games significantly yet Cruis’n USA feels like it was designed for a 2d system.

Aside from the mundane level design the game’s handling is floaty. This is either a plus or a minus depending on your skill level. The controls are slippery with no feeling or resistance in turns. It makes it relatively easy to slide around the tracks but it does not feel satisfying. The game’s handling of collision is also questionable. I get that this is not a simulator but it is a bit ridiculous. I have crashed into roadside objects like trees and even buildings and aside from a brief spin came out at near full speed. Meanwhile a slight bump from incoming traffic or a rival car sent me flying. The inconsistency is annoying. Not that the game is hard; aside from the Redwood Forest track that comes early on I had no trouble coming in first no matter how badly I drove.

I can’t completely trash the game. For its time Cruis’n USA has more content than most of its racing peers. Fourteen tracks and multiple selectable cars is a lot, especially for a cartridge game. They recycle a lot of assets in every track; despite crossing the country you will recognize the same green roadside and city areas used throughout the game. But considering most racing games back then had three tracks and called it a day I’ll take this any day.

Cruis'n USA 001

Cruis’n USA was a technical marvel when it hit arcades in 1994. Time was not kind to this one and by 1996 far better looking racing games hit the arcade and home consoles. The game’s draw distance is low; not as bad as Daytona on the Saturn but noticeable. The track-side detail is composed of low resolution sprites that are blurry and ugly. The framerate is all over the place and very inconsistent which makes no sense considering how little is going on. Don’t bother playing multiplayer as it is even worse. It is hard to think that this was once considered evidence of how great the N64 would be. Thank god the system would have better looking technical showpieces in short order.

In Conclusion

Ultimately Cruis’n USA is a bad port of a dated arcade game. If the N64 had released in 1995 as planned maybe Cuis’n USA would have been impressive. But in 1996, next to games like Wipeout XL  it does not stack up. The N64 has too many racing games to bother with this one.

  • Excluding the Commodore 64 games that week, this game was the 200th Virtual Console release.
  • In the car selection screen, holding C-Up + C-Left + C-Down while any car (except the far right car) is highlighted will cause that car to change into a jeep, a school bus, or a police car. These can be upgraded the same as the ordinary cars.
  • On the high score screen, holding the analog stick left will cause the conveyor at the bottom to move. After about 30 seconds of holding left, an animated head will roll in accompanied by someone saying "I love this job!"
  • The trophy girl which appears at the end of each race is adult film star Shyla Foxxx , who's credited in the game under her real name Anutza Herling. [1] In the Nintendo 64 version, she was censored to wear a shirt instead of being seen in a bikini.

Description official descriptions

Originally an arcade machine, Cruis'n USA was then released for the Nintendo 64. The game asks players to choose from four vehicles to race in a variety of courses throughout the USA —based on real locations, their names are: Golden Gate Park, US 101, LA Freeway, Arizona (easy mode); Beverly Hills, Death Valley, Iowa, Indiana, Appalachia (medium difficulty mode); San Francisco, Redwood Forest, Grand Canyon, Chicago, Washington, D.C. (expert mode). Various pre-race options included are the choice of automatic or manual transmission, various controller configurations, as well as background music selection option.

Players take control of the vehicle from a third-person perspective, and while avoiding various hazards along the way, must beat the clock as well as the CPU-controlled rivals to achieve first place.

An Atrocious Racer

The Good Only one good track in the game. The Bad Controls are horrendous, graphics are bad. The Bottom Line The first road-based racing game on the N64. I remember this being panned in magazines, but surely not much can go wrong with something as simple as a racing game, especially one that Nintendo themselves published?

Unfortunately, there is a lot to go wrong. Almost the entire game feels exactly the same: driving along the same four lane roads, dodging the same few cars and turning over the slight bends – hoping that your card doesn’t decide to swerve too much. The handling is dreadful and everything just feels floaty, even collisions. The only distraction are the different backgrounds (which you can see loading in), and this is not enough to stop the game from becoming stale before you’re half way through it – which is an impressive feat when the game is less than 30 minutes long.

There was one level that stood out: a redwood forest level. Most of this is two lanes, with the roadside visuals up close and some large trees to drive under. In most racing games, it wouldn’t be a good level, but in Cruis’n USA, it’s the best by a long way.

If you really want to, you can complete the game on harder difficulties in different cars to unlock faster versions, but the first playthrough is so dull that there’s really no reason to do so. I can see this being fine in the atmosphere of an arcade, spending a few quid on it, but for a home console release, this is just bare bones.

The Cruis’n series had a few games on N64 and there’s even a new game on the Switch, so hopefully this series improves as it goes on.

A port that's not the best

The Good The gameplay looks solid and music sounds cool enough. An arcade style that what racing is. The graphics are decent enough for the N64 at the time. The Bad The graphics and music has decreased compression it's for it's 64 Megabit/8 MB limit which makes it not look good. The controls don't handle like a car. A car wheel could have been used for the game. Midway and Nintendo spent too much time trying make it arcade perfect, but got rid of some humor and the ending if Nintendo can not censor Mortal Kombat. A Playstation port would be okay for better music and more content. The Bottom Line This is isn't the best port of the arcade game but they tried. If they spent more time and try to put more space on the cartridge to 16MB. You be better off playing the arcade version at a pizza place. The port may not be good for some players. Not worth owning for any player who a fan of retro arcade racers. I have to say to net pick it...

N64 Changes

In the process of porting the game from arcade to Nintendo 64, a few small things were censored to fit Nintendo's rating system. The Trophy girl at the end of races had a Cruis'n USA top drawn on instead of a bikini. Also, the ending scene of the president in a hot tub with bikini clad women was removed. Finally, the transmission option 'XL Powershaft' was renamed 'XL Power', and the ability to hit and kill animals (like deer) was entirely removed.

Cruis'n USA

"An arcade port that never used the N64's true capabilities and looked easily at home on a PSOne with its pop-up cardboard scenery. Although there are finer racers on the system, it's an enjoyable arcade-style racer: plenty of tracks with recognisable locations, and unlockable cars. It's slightly average but as a Brit who's only ever been to New Orleans, I enjoy cruising the USA."

"There maybe be better racers on the Nintendo 64 but for some reason I have always found myself going back to this game. I think this is the first racing game on a console that I remember the cars looking like real cars instead of pixilated versions of real cars and location like real locations. I Still enjoy crusin down Chicago's Lower Wacker Drive."

7/10 - Tasuki 64

"This may not be a great port of an arcade game series, but heck if I didn't make some good memories with this. The controls were responsive from what I remember, and there was some memorable if cheesy music to go along with the package. A personal favorite thing to do was run head on with an oncoming bus... Yeah, really stupid, but fun."

6/10 - Lunapplebloom 64

"There are better arcade racing games available than Cruis'n USA": that was my initial thought while driving in this game for the first time. It just isn't fun to play. There are plenty of better racers: Mario Kart 64, Diddy Kong Racing, F-Zero GX etc. But if you want to see a piece of N64 history, then go on and give it a try."

4/10 - Luffymcduck 64

"Cruisin USA was a game that I absolutely did not enjoy as a kid, and now being a grown man I can safely say that I still do not enjoy it. It was an arcade port that did not really shine compared to the much better arcade racers of the era... With classics like Rush 2049 and Hydro Thunder on N64, it's not great."

3/10 - Bender 64

"When Crusin' USA hit arcades, it was impressive enough to claim a few dollars from me, especially since it touted itself as a sneak peak of the "Nintendo Ultra 64". Then previews of other games showed the system doing real 3D environments instead of cardboard. The only thing that could save this port is if it could bring the full-motion arcade cabinet with it."

3/10 - VGScrapbook 64

I loved Cruisin USA. My brothers and I played this a ton when the 64 first came out. I would have picked it up for the virtual console too, but you can get the secret vehicles since you don't have c buttons, only a c-stick.

  • unrandomsam

I loved the Arcade game. (That was a good way of hyping a console - but was totally different hardware).

When I got it for the N64 I thought it was not good enough. (Or even much like it).

Dump. (2/10)

My vice was the school bus.

I played a lot of the sequel: Cruis'n World!

@Ricube Yay Cruis'n World! Loved that one. God I miss Midway and their cheap thrills arcade ports.

  • NTELLIGENTMAN

I disagree with these reviews. This game should get an 8/10. Exotica was horrible and should get a 7/10 while World should get a 9/10.

@NTELLIGENTMAN Haha, of course they're opinion pieces so you are quite free to disagree. I'm amused how a game you call horrible deserves a 7 though? Review scores are fun.

I thought this was ok. Technically relatively impressive for it's time, if I'm recalling correctly (although that might have just been the arcade version when it first came out) but nothing particularly special.

I have a lot of fond memories playing this game back in late 96 early 97. While the graphics were kind of a let down, the whole vibe of the arcade game was there. My friends and I played relentless trying to unlock all the vehicles and beat the game. The music for me is really made this game, that and the just the whole vibe of Crusin the USA. I love this game and its probably my favorite in the series. Its sequel Crusin World was even better. Crusin Exotica was alright and the GBA Crusin Velocity was absolutely trash. Overall USA and World are great fun arcade racers and tons of fun to play with friends. 9/10

  • GloryQuestor

I did like Crusin' USA at the time it came out. Unfortunately, not only did first- and third-party racers eventually overtake it in popularity, but it's sequel Crusin' World is probably the worst racer I've seen on any platform, which taints the original's namesake.

I loved this in the arcade and was stoked when it came to the N64. I played it non stop back in the day & still pop it in for nostalgia sakes.

Still enjoy this game to this day. Yeah there are other better racers out there but for some reason I keep coming back to this one.

  • Tue 16th Sep 2014

Loved this game back in the early days of the N64. Highly doubt its held up, but it sure was a lot of fun back in the day.

  • SEGATA_DREAMCAST

Pfft forget this, where is cruisn the world?! i stayed up all night playin that with an old buddy of mine, drinkin Dr pepper with sour punch straws and goin crazy with popcorn. fun times

  • shonenjump86

I remember this game back on the arcade machine. I rented this game on the N64, I never really got into it.

beetle adventure racing, san francisco rush, top gear rally, world driver championship, mrc racing(?), gt64, automobili lamborghini(sp), top gear overdrive were all racing games i found more enjoyable than crusin usa.

  • electrolite77

Awful, awful game. Worth 30 seconds of anybody's time for 'what were they thinking' comedy value but that's it.

  • ErrantEmbers
  • Wed 12th Nov 2014

I'm not going to lie - this game is not that good. The graphics were terrible, the gameplay was bad, and the physics could not be more off. Yet somehow I enjoyed playing this. It was incredibly dated in 1996 but even moreso today. It's by no means a deep game and it is the furthest thing from the quintessential racing game, but I pop this one into my N64 every so often for a quick run through the country. 6/10

  • Cruis'n USA (N64)

Cruis'n USA is a racing game developed originally by Midway Games for the arcade, and was ported to the Nintendo 64 by Williams Entertainment.

In the game, the goal is to simply reach the goal before the opponent vehicles do. There are a variety of vehicles to choose from, and beating the game on harder difficulties will unlock more cars. You can either choose one of fourteen tracks across the USA, or race through them all in the Cruise the USA mode. Some locations include the LA Freeway, US 101, Redwood Forest, Chicago, and Washington D.C. The only obstacles to avoid on each track is the traffic on the road, as well as the opponent racers. There is also a time limit which can be replenished by checkpoints, but this isn't an issue unless played on higher difficulty settings.

The Nintendo 64 version of Cruis'n USA was originally announced as a launch title for the system, but failed when Nintendo rejected the game, as it did not meet their quality standards. The Nintendo 64 version pales in comparison to the arcade version regarding the graphics and sound, as well as the usual censorship requested by Nintendo. Some of the censors included removing the ability to run over pedestrians and animals, as well as toning down the ending cutscene. However, the Nintendo 64 version has some merits of its own; the player can save their data, and the ability to play splitscreen multiplayer is present.

The game received mixed-to-negative reviews upon release, but still managed to sell in huge numbers. Numbers so huge in fact, that it was the best selling game of the 1996 Christmas shopping season. Some of the criticisms included the aforementioned censorship, the collision detection being off, and the downgrade in graphics and sound.

The game was released for the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console in 2008.

All of Cruis'n USA's score is from the arcade version composed by Vince Pontarelli, in which he used both MIDI and guitar, and wrote the music in Digital Performer . The arcade version used digital audio for high fidelity music. It was ported over to the Nintendo 64 by Orpheus Hanley, who had done a lot of work for Midway's home division. Rather than use a real guitar, due to space limitations, Orpheus was forced to use keyboard samples instead. Some of the notes are off, but nothing that ruins the music. The game allows the player to select one of seven songs at any time during a race by pressing the B button. The song titles for the in-game tunes are taken from the game, which shows the name of the song anytime the song is changed. The source of the instrument samples is currently unknown.

Orpheus talked about working on the game:

  • Recorder: Doommaster1994
  • Music, Guitar: Vince Pontarelli
  • Sound Effects: Matt Booty
  • Race Announcer: Gingi Lahera
  • Cruis'n Vocals: Jeff Morrow
  • Sound Programming: Scott Patterson
  • Music & Sound FX: Orpheus Hanley

The credits are shown after the Cruise the USA mode has been cleared. Along with the staff names and roles are portraits of the developers.

Ripping Nintendo 64 music is a very arduous process that is beyond the scope of this site.

About this product

Product information.

  • The Nintendo 64's first racing title is a conversion of 1994's coin-op game by Midway Games. As in the quarter-munching original, the object is to travel across the continental U.S. in a series of 14 point-to-point races. Two play modes include "Single Race" and "Cruise the USA." The former offers a choice of ten individual courses, while the latter includes the entire cross-country trip. Four non-licensed sports cars and three bonus vehicles are available to drive. As you travel from California's Golden Gate Park to Washington, D.C., you'll view such landmarks as Mount Rushmore, the Grand Canyon, and the White House. Eight computer-controlled drivers are your primary competition in each race, as you carefully weave through traffic-filled highways spanning multiple lanes. Options consist of five difficulty settings, two transmission types, multiple controller configurations, and customizable traffic. Head-to-head racing is also available via split-screen display.

I like the game, really just got it for nostalgia. Only negative thing that I have to say is it took almost a month to get here. I ordered a different game the same day but this game came from China. Long story short the game I ordered from China made it here before the game I ordered from you.

Great classic of a game!

When I got Cruis'n USA on the 10th, I was so happy to receive it! It was in very good condition with no nicks or scratches. I tested it out on my N64 and worked just fine with no bugs or glitches. I used my Retrofighters Brawler64 wired controller and selected the USA course and came in 2nd place. I can't wait to play more of this game soon!

Good, casual racing fun!

This is a good racing title which belongs in the games collection of any Nintendo N64 owner. It is practically identical to the full sized arcade version. There are no complicated rules or wrinkles: the player simply steers with the stick and accelerates with the "z" button. Up to four players can play, which can make for good party fun. The beautiful race vistas and hilariously antiseptic crashes are among the best aspects.

Crusi’n USA

I love the game because I grew up laying it on the Arcade games at Laundry Mats or Donut Shops. Game is very cool for people of my age group that grew with this game.

Game works great! Takes me back! Thank you my girlfriend loved it!

The 25 best nintendo 64 games of all time, share this article.

cruise usa nintendo 64

The Nintendo 64 has a complicated legacy for Nintendo.

With 33 million in sales, the N64 failed to surpass the mega-successful Super Nintendo, and was dwarfed in sales worldwide by Sony’s PlayStation. The reliance on cartridges rather than adopting the CD format led to a lack of third-party developer support and a small game library – but some of the games we did get for the system, first released in North America on September 29th, 1996, remain all-time classics.

The N64 gave us the start of several huge Nintendo franchises, from Mario Party to Super Smash Bros . Two iconic Legend of Zelda games released on the N64 that many fans still consider the best in the series. And the N64 produced one of the greatest launch games of all time, Super Mario 64 .

But which N64 games rank among the best of the bunch? Here’s our ranking of the top 25 games ever to be released on the Nintendo 64.

All release dates listed are for the North American versions, unless otherwise specified.

ALSO SEE: FTW’s ranking of the top 30 video games of all time .

25 Mario Party 3

Release date: May 7, 2001

Dozens of fun minigames with the Mario cast, plus by this time Nintendo had removed the rotating joystick games that burned your palms.

24 Animal Crossing

Release date: April 14, 2001 (in Japan)

I’m cheating a bit here, as Animal Crossing was only available on N64 in Japan. That version of the game was later polished and released on the GameCube in America the following year. But the N64 original is just a slightly downgraded version from what would become one of the GameCube’s best games, and a massively successful series for Nintendo.

23 StarCraft 64

Release date: June 13, 2000

A micro-intensive PC RTS on the Nintendo 64? It’s not only amazing this game existed, but also that it managed to provide a solid experience of one of the best PC games ever.

22 NFL Blitz 2001

Release date: September 14, 2000

Traditional NFL, NBA and MLB games on the N64 often left a lot to be desired, but Blitz 2001 was like bringing the arcade machine home. We desperately need a modern Blitz.

21 F-Zero X

Release date: October 27, 1998

Give us more F-Zero games, Nintendo! F-Zero X gave players the challenge and sense of speed that was later perfected on the GameCube with F-Zero GX.

20 Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2

Release date: August 21, 2001

Classic THPS gameplay, with one of the best collections of levels in the entire series and a fantastic soundtrack.

19 Excitebike 64

Release date: May 2, 2000

The NES original is still fun to play, but Excitebike 64 took the game into the 3D world and delivered excellent physics and visuals for the time.

18 Conker's Bad Fur Day

Release date: March 5, 2001

Conker released late in the N64’s life cycle and went a little under the radar as the PS2 had already been released and the GameCube wasn’t far away, but this unexpected M-rated platformer from Rare was full of adult humor and also had great multiplayer modes.

17 Diddy Kong Racing

Release date: November 24, 1997

A solid evolution of the Mario Kart formula that had you racing through the air and water in additional to the usual circuits, and an overworld to explore.

16 Star Wars: Rogue Squadron

Release date: December 8, 1998

The GameCube editions of the Rogue Squadron series are the real gems you’d want to go back and play, but the N64 original set the stage. Zipping around in a full fleet of Star Wars ships and taking down TIE fighters in 1998? Sign me up.

15 Mario Golf

Release date: July 26, 1999

Like Mario Tennis, Mario Golf makes you appreciate how Nintendo nailed it all the way back in 1999 while the more modern games haven’t quite been able to deliver in the same way.

14 Mario Tennis

Release date: August 28, 2000

Nintendo somehow still hasn’t managed to make a Mario Tennis game better than the original, though the Game Boy Color version came close. Top-tier visuals for the N64 in 2000.

13 Wave Race 64

Release date: November 4, 1996

What Nintendo was able to achieve with water physics and visuals for a near launch game that game out a couple months after the system launched is mind-boggling. One of the best early advertisements for the N64 along with Super Mario 64.

12 Donkey Kong 64

Release date: November 22, 1999

DK64 gets some criticism for being a collect-a-thon – and there are a ton of things to collect – but as far as collect-a-thons go, it was one of the best.

11 Star Fox 64

Release date: June 30, 1997

Another franchise that hasn’t gotten as much love from Nintendo as it deserves. A classic rail-shooter that looked incredible at the time and is one of the Nintendo Switch Online titles you don’t want to miss.

10 Paper Mario

Release date: February 5, 2001

Thanks to the unique art style, no N64 game has aged as well as Paper Mario

9 Super Smash Bros.

Release date: April 26, 1999

There were few better ways to pass an evening in 1999 than with three other players crowded around a TV playing Super Smash Bros. An excellent first entry in what would go on to become one of Nintendo’s most important series.

8 GoldenEye 007

Release date: August 25, 1997

You probably wouldn’t want to go back to GoldenEye 007 and deal with the controls, which haven’t aged well, but this was one of the best movie adaptations we’ve ever seen with killer multiplayer, and the soundtrack is otherworldly.

7 WWF No Mercy

Release date: November 14, 2000

The best wrestling game ever created, with a massive roster, an excellent create-a-wrestler feature for the time, and a branching story mode that made No Mercy just as playable alone as it was with friends.

6 Perfect Dark

Release date: May 22, 2000

Rare took what it learned from GoldenEye 007 and delivered an upgraded FPS in so many ways with Perfect Dark.

5 Mario Kart 64

Release date: February 10, 1997

The perfect party game. and one that still holds up today. There’s a reason Nintendo keeps putting Mario Kart 64 circuits in newer Mario Kart games — they were awesome.

4 The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

Release date: October 26, 2000

A unique Zelda title with a much darker and more mature story than the usual fare, but some fans still don’t like the time limit implementation.

3 Banjo-Kazooie

Release date: June 29, 1998

A masterpiece of an adventure platformer from Rare that sadly didn’t receive as many follow-ups as it should have.

2 The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Release date: November 23, 1998

Considered by many to still be the best Zelda game in the entire franchise, Ocarina of Time had an excellent story, unforgettable zones and dungeons, and was an excellent 3D evolution of the classic Zelda formula.

1 Super Mario 64

Release date: September 29, 1996

The eternal question: Super Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time?

Super Mario 64 gets the nod over Ocarina of Time as it was a mind-blowing 3D launch game that remains eminently replayable to this day. Classic levels and excellent platforming, slightly hindered by a wonky camera system, but still arguably the best launch title any system has ever had.
