A solid backpack is key to a successful trip. Think about it: You can use it as a carry-on, and if you pack light, it'll be the only piece of luggage you bring on a trip. It won't weigh you down as you rush to catch the inter-terminal train at the airport, and it'll look good on you as you stroll the streets of your destination. Find a good travel backpack, and it will serve you for years to come.

There’s a lot to consider when looking for a backpack to take you through all kinds of situations and environments. Waterproof, anti-theft, stylish, lightweight, wheels or no wheels—all things to keep in mind as you shop. To help you make the right choice, we tested 32 carry-on backpacks in our New York testing lab and in the real world. We tested for capacity, design, comfort, durability, and value.

Best overall, cotopaxi allpa 35l travel pack.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5
  • Comfort 5 /5

Super durable material

Very comfortable with multiple carry methods

Lighter and more rugged than previous models

Nothing yet

Does the perfect travel backpack exist? We’re not sure, but we can’t think of one that comes closer than the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L. This second version of Cotopaxi’s best-selling backpack is rugged and comfy, has excellent organization capabilities, and is the perfect size to throw in an overhead bin, toss in a vehicle, and huff around from train to hostel.

The pack uses burly TPU-coated 1000-denier polyester and lightweight 840-denier ballistic nylon paneling. It has excellent weight distribution with comfy shoulder and sternum straps and hip belts, or stow the straps and carry the pack with side handles. The inside features multiple pockets of different sizes that we found perfect for separating clean and dirty clothes, electronics, and shoes. Bonus: It comes with a rainfly to protect it from the weather.

Best Overall, Runner-Up

Osprey fairview 40.

Quite spacious while remaining carry-on sized

Keeps belongings secure

Good padding and weight distribution

Osprey’s women-specific Fairview 40 pack impressed our tester with its size, space, and compartments. “This bag has a lot of compartments and a lot of straps to hold everything in place,” our tester reported. Despite the bag fitting a bit large, our tester said it was still very comfortable to wear. Osprey employs its proprietary Lightwire Frame Suspension, which helps spread the weight across the back panel and from the harness to the hip belt.

Despite being a 40-liter pack, it weighs just about 3 pounds, thanks to the lightweight nylon ripstop material and frame. “It did not hurt my back, and I like how most of the weight was shifted to my lower back,” our tester mentioned. Besides the fit, we also appreciated that all straps are stowable, making it easy in case you need to check the bag on a plane (which is possible on smaller planes with this larger-capacity pack). For the men’s version of the same pack, check out the Farpoint 40 .

Capacity: 38 liters (extra-small/small size) | Weight: 3 pounds, 1 ounce | Dimensions: 19.3 x 13.8 x 8 inches | Materials: 210-denier nylon mini hex diamond ripstop and 600-denier packcloth

Best Budget

Vancropak 40l travel backpack.

  • Capacity 4 /5
  • Design 3 /5
  • Comfort 4 /5

Great for a short-to-medium-length trip

Could double as a business travel pack

Feature packed and user friendly

Lacks tech compartment

Cloth material could get dirty easily

This 40-liter pack checks all the boxes, including excellent value. Vancropak says it fits enough for trips between three and seven days, and we’d have to agree. “It fit everything even though I packed quickly and not thoughtfully or strategically,” our tester said. “It’s perfect for a weekend trip when you want to pack extra ‘just in case’ outfits or items. It even expands to provide more room. It has extra pockets, opens like a suitcase, has many different handles, and backpack straps that can be tucked and zipped away.” Compression straps also help shrink the bag back down after being packed.

And if you weren’t convinced yet of its value, it also includes packing cubes. “Its business-casual aesthetic makes it ideal for short business trips, too,” a tester added. One nitpick? There’s no laptop sleeve. But our testers thought the other features—and comfort—more than made up for that slight issue.

Capacity: 40 liters | Weight: 3.98 pounds | Dimensions: 20 x 13.7 x 6.2 inches | Materials: Water-resistant polyester

Asenlin 40L Travel Backpack

Functional straps

Multiple ways to carry

Not too weighty

Our tester didn’t love the style

If you didn’t dig the budget pack above, behold another excellent value travel pack. Like the Vancropak, the Asenlin Travel Backpack also includes three packing cubes. Our testers found they could easily fit everything needed for a weekend trip. They also liked the internal straps for organization and the external straps for compression. “It offers three different carrying methods, which is nice,” the testers reported. “It has a lot of different pockets and storage areas. The bottle holder on the side also unzips to expand, which is a thoughtful addition.”

Our testers liked how comfortable the bag was to wear and that it wasn’t overly heavy (the brand claims it weighs less than 3 pounds). We also believe this could double as a business travel bag.

Capacity: 40 liters | Weight: 2.7 pounds | Dimensions: 18.5 x 12.5 x 9.5 inches | Materials: Water-resistant polyester Oxford cloth

Best for Business Travel

Nomatic travel bag.

  • Comfort 3 /5

Fits about a week’s worth of items

Loads of internal organization

Comes with an additional laundry bag

Uncomfortable to carry at times

Some scuff marks after tossing around

While we certainly love this bag's sleek and simplistic aesthetic, there’s a lot more to it than just looks. It’s durable and water-resistant and has multiple carry options (e.g., duffel and over the shoulders), a separate shoe compartment, lots of tech organization, and a TSA-ready laptop sleeve.

Our testers loved the capacity of this pack. “It easily fit everything on the list with plenty of room to spare,” one tester said. “I think everything you would need for up to a week away would fit easily.” The pronounced rectangular shape of the bag made it extra easy to pack and helped organize folded clothes. “The bag had two different shoe pockets, a laptop sleeve, and many other compartments for both smaller clothing items and even some work supplies,” a tester reported.

The one drawback of this pack was our testers didn’t find it the most comfortable. Specifically, the straps were stiff and dug into one tester’s neck. Overall, though, our testers were very pleased with the pack and thought it was worth the fit, especially for the design and ease of packing.

Best Multi-use

Peak design travel backpack 45l.

  • Value 4.5 /5

Excellent capacity

Easy to handle

Thoughtful storage solutions

This 45-liter travel pack from Peak Design debuted at the Outdoor Retailer Expo in 2018 and promptly won many awards. A few years later, it still holds up. Peak Design basically thought of everything when designing this pack. The outside features weatherproof recycled 400-denier nylon canvas and ultralight padded foam. It includes grab handles on each side, stowable hip belts, and a sternum strap. The inside has multiple pockets for organization and loads of room for trips of four days or longer.

Our testers loved the size and the zippers allowing access from four different sides of the bag. “It was super easy to pack, and there were just enough organization solutions to provide options for different packing strategies,” a tester said. “I also loved how many handles there were. A grab handle on all four main sides of the bag makes it super easy to maneuver, especially when putting it in the overhead compartment.”

Testers also liked the sheath built into the pack to stow the hip belt and the small pocket on the belt for stashing quick-grab items like lip balm, keys, or cards. They also enjoyed the water bottle pockets on both sides and the pack's comfort. Oh, and this pack is 100 percent carbon neutral. The only issue they saw was the price—it’s one of the most expensive on this list. But if you can look at this as an investment, the durability suggests it should last for many years. It's certainly carry-on luggage that any travel-savvy guy can appreciate.

Capacity: 45 liters | Weight: 4.5 pounds | Dimensions: 22 x 13 x 9.5 inches | Materials: Weatherproof 100 percent recycled 400-denier nylon canvas external shell and 900-denier waterproof bottom liner

Most Comfortable

Topo designs global travel bag 40l.

Topo Designs

Excellent internal organization

Many different carrying options

Great for long travel days

Could be roomier

If your travel involves carrying your backpack for long periods, we recommend Topo Designs' Global Travel Bag. This super durable pack is also super comfortable with plush and padded shoulder straps and a hip belt. We also love that there are multiple ways to carry this pack with a comfy and padded sling. Its construction includes durable and recycled nylons with a canvas feel. And it meets Fair Wear certification standards, ensuring fair labor practices.

“There are a ton of compartments and pockets, so a lot of options for staying organized with small or loose items in the absence of packing cubes,” one tester said. “I could easily see places to stash cords, travel docs, electronics, water bottles, and more.”

While our testers liked a lot about this bag—including its durability—the comfort won them over. “All the features built into the bag suggest it's intended to create maximum comfort for someone who anticipates carrying the bag for a more extended period of time,” our tester concluded.

Capacity: 40 liters | Weight: 3 pounds, 10.4 ounces | Dimensions: 22.5 x 14 x 7.5 inches | Materials: 1000-denier recycled nylon, 400-denier recycled nylon, 210-denier recycled nylon, 1680-denier recycled ballistic nylon

Best Splurge

Bellroy transit backpack plus.

Flat opening made for easy packing

Comfortable to carry

Long lasting

Minimal internal organization

If you weren't convinced by our business travel pick above, consider this your alternative. This pack's sleek, durable, and comfortable design makes it ideal for business and formal travel. Our testers found it easy to fit enough items for up to three or four days away. Lighter packers could stretch this to five days. The inside is designed more like a typical carry-on pack with one large compartment.

“This bag felt super light on my back and was padded in all the right places,” a tester reported. “It has adjustable sternum and waist straps that you can tuck into the back of the pack when you don't want to use them, which is a genius feature.” Our testers were also impressed with the bag's durability, as it survived being tossed around our lab with zero marks or scuffs.

Capacity: 38 liters | Weight: 3.3 pounds | Dimensions: 21.7 x 15 x 9.4 inches | Materials: Recycled Dura nylon

Samsonite Silhouette 17 Backpack

  • Design 4 /5
  • Durability 4 /5

Suitcase-like opening allows easy access

Eco-friendly materials

Suitable for long travel days

Internal organization may be overcomplicated for some

Launched in 1958, Samsonite’s Silhouette collection is likely the oldest on our list. But those six decades of innovation have helped make this one of the best and most versatile bags out there—not to mention one with excellent style. You can also feel good about your purchase knowing that it features 100 percent post-consumer recycled PET bottles.

Our testers liked the size of the bag and the opening, similar to a suitcase, which made it easy to pack and access items. There were many—almost too many—pockets and compartments. And our testers loved how comfortable and supportive this bag was to carry, noting its excellent weight distribution. “I would recommend this bag to someone looking for a backpack they can use as a primary form of luggage,” a tester concluded. “It has enough room and compartments to fit all of the essentials and keep them organized. It's also comfortable, supportive, and easy to carry.”

Best for Techies

Thule subterra backpack 34l.

Functional and looks good

Bag included for dirty laundry

Portable charger

Not the most comfortable

We’ve been pleasantly surprised with Thule’s line of luggage. And that certainly includes the Subterra backpack. This rugged pack could also be a good commuter option as it has a magnetic rolling top closure, a padded laptop sleeve, and a PowerPocket for charging items on the go. We love that it has many access points and comes with a packing cube and garment bag for dirty clothes.

"I loved being able to put my normal packing cubes inside the big cube that comes with the bag, and I was able to use the bag as a day bag anytime I needed to carry extra, and it never felt super bulky,” a tester reported—however, they noted that the bag didn’t particularly help their already-sore back. Not surprisingly, considering its construction, the pack aced our durability tests.

Capacity: 34 liters | Weight: 2.75 pounds | Dimensions: 20.5 x 12.2 x 9.1 inches | Materials: 800-denier nylon

Best for Storage

Mystery ranch mission rover.

Mystery Ranch

Sturdy with grab handles around the pack

Well-designed internal storage

Different ways to carry

A bit heavy

If you’ve never heard of Mystery Ranch, let us introduce you to the Bozeman, Montana-based brand, which makes super rugged packs for backpacking, hunting, the military, and firefighters. This travel-focused pack is incredibly solid on the outside and has many excellent organization and design features inside.

Highlights include a stowable hip belt and shoulder straps, multiple carrying options, a dirty clothes compartment, three inner divided pockets, and lockable zippers.

Capacity: 30, 45, and 60 liters | Weight: 4.3 pounds | Dimensions: 21 x 13 x 12 inches | Materials: Plain spun nylon, 210-denier nylon

We recommend the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack thanks to its incredibly durable polyester and nylon materials, well-designed internal storage, and included rainfly. Another great pick is the Vancropak Travel Backpack , which rings up at a fraction of the cost of some other options on the market.

We selected products to test based on the expertise of TripSavvy editors and writers and on internet research. Not surprisingly, TripSavvy editors and writers travel a lot. And they have many carry-on backpacks they like and don’t like.

To ensure we weren’t missing anything, we also researched what other prominent sites have featured and looked at top-rated and reviewed backpacks on sites like Amazon and REI. Once an initial list of products was selected, we narrowed it down to the final 28 for testing based on style, function, and price.

We tested the backpacks for capacity, design, comfort, durability, and value. In our New York City-based testing lab, we asked testers to pack each backpack with three shirts, two pants, one jacket, one pair of shoes, and a toiletry bag to test for capacity. We asked the testers to consider all aspects of the backpack’s construction, organizational capabilities, and any design innovations.

Testers then carried each backpack around using the different carrying styles. We asked the testers to rate how comfortable the bag felt fully packed. After the comfort test, we asked testers to toss and throw the bag several feet multiple times. We looked for damage on the outside of the bag and any damage to products inside the bag. Lastly, we asked testers to rate the bag for overall value after a price reveal.

We have since sent the backpacks to testers to continue testing as they travel. We will update this document accordingly as their insights are submitted.

Aer Travel Pack 3 : This pack was comfortable to wear thanks to its supportively firm and cushioned back, while its rugged fabric stood up well to rough handling. Our tester subtracted some points for capacity, as it was a squeeze to get everything on the list to fit, and for the more function-forward style.

Everlane The ReNew Transit Backpack : This bag is very nice to look at and proved quite durable. However, it's on the small side and the features aren't particularly travel-oriented—namely, the inflexible bottle holder and the magnetic flip top that is easily displaced when the pack is full.

Minaal Carry-on 3.0 Bag : Our tester appreciated the comfort of the straps and the practical capacity of this bag, though the price was on the higher end and the packing experience was a bit of a learning curve.

Monos Metro Backpack : Another looker, the design of this bag got high praise. We liked the 270-degree opening, the easy-release front pouch, and the comfortable straps. At 18 liters, this back is more of a complement piece to other luggage and could use a better weight distribution system.

Timbuk2 Never Check Expandable : The expansion feature was a hit once we figured out how to use it and the durability of this pack was undeniable. It was difficult to look past a faulty zipper design that got caught frequently when trying to close.

What to Look For in a Carry-on Backpack

Prices for carry-on backpacks vary widely, so consider what your greatest needs are. You can find a spacious travel backpack for under $100—often under $50—but if you plan on facing harsh outdoor environments , consider investing a bit more money for something waterproof. Leather backpacks can cost hundreds of dollars; keep this in mind if that material is important to you. Anti-theft travel backpacks can be a bit more expensive but are often essential in highly trafficked destinations.

There are so many styles out there you could spend days filtering through the different backpacks on the market. Keep it simple: How will you be using this backpack? If you’re interfacing with clients or business partners, look for something minimal and sleek that doesn’t showcase a million pockets. If you plan on living out of your backpack for most of your trip, pockets are more of a priority. You'll want a bag that zips open flat like a suitcase for easy packing and unloading (this also makes going through security easier).

If you are using your travel backpack for hiking, find something with a removable hip harness to distribute the weight of your pack better when you’re on the move. If you plan on wearing your travel backpack casually—only in the airport or to work—seek out a style with adjustable straps and a padded back. This will help ward off any back pain, especially if you carry a lot of weight. When you’re trying on backpacks, test out the shoulder straps and imagine how they would feel if the pack was filled to capacity. Is there ample padding? Will the material cut into your shoulders? Does the back of the backpack feel like it would be breathable?

The size of backpacks is generally measured in volume (liters) or dimensions (inches or centimeters). While it is essential to refer to the specific requirements of the airline you'll be flying, a good starting point for a carry-on when flying domestically is 22 x 14 x 9 inches or 45 total linear inches (115 centimeters) including all handles and wheels. This size comes out to a 43-liter pack, so anything smaller should easily meet any U.S. airline size restrictions. However, this is only the beginning, and several factors may increase or decrease your allowance, such as the size of the plane and flight class you book.

This will vary based on your backpack's materials. For nylon and other water-resistant fabrics, get a damp cloth and spot-clean your pack. A damp cloth will also do the trick if your bag has plastic or metal elements. For leather backpacks, you’ll want to purchase a special leather conditioner and cleaner to maintain the integrity of your backpack.

This is an excellent feature if you plan on hiking or spending long periods carrying your backpack. It will help distribute the weight of your pack better across your body, ultimately providing more comfort. Most backpacks that are focused on outdoor adventures will have this feature.

Many backpacks are marketed as anti-theft, meaning it’s tougher for someone else to get inside your pack. Some backpacks have zippers that allow you to open the main interior compartment while wearing it—so you don’t have to take it off and risk having someone else pick it up. Others are designed with webbing over the zipper openings, making it very hard for someone to locate and unzip the bag while you have it on.

No, this is not the norm when it comes to backpacks. Compression cords make packing easier and function the same way a compression strap or cord would work in a regular suitcase. Some travel-focused carry-on backpacks do have this built-in. But if you want to squeeze in more items, consider investing in some packing cubes . These will help organize your backpack, too.

Nathan Allen is TripSavvy’s Outdoor Gear Editor. He has traveled to five continents, including plane, train, and bus travel. For most travel scenarios, he prefers backpacks over spinners or roller suitcases because of their ruggedness and different carrying methods. He currently uses Cotopaxi’s Allpa 35L, Thule’s Subterra, and Topo Design’s Global Travel Pack the most. Each product recommended in this review was thoroughly researched and tested.

We Put Walmart’s Low-Cost Backpacking Gear to the Test. Here’s How It Fared.

Think top-shelf gear is a must in the backcountry we put some budget items to the test to find out..

Ever wonder if high-end gear is worth the high-end price? Us too. After all, you can head to big-box stores and pick up a tent for less than $50, and a headlamp for 10 bucks. I wondered: If I outfitted myself with low-cost Walmart gear and went camping with a buddy who uses only name-brand equipment, would his gear outperform mine? Or would there be times when the cheaper gear worked just as well? With that in mind, we set off on a 5-mile, two-night backpacking trip into the Book Cliffs outside Grand Junction , Colorado, to find out. The weather was classic shoulder season, with lots of spring wind and nightly temperatures in the high 30s, and the terrain was dry and rocky, dominated by boulders and junipers.

Ozark Trail 2-Person Backpacking Tent

Ozark Trail 2-Person Backpacking Tent ($49) versus MSR Freelite 2 ($410)

Tale of the tape: A good backpacking tent must be light and packable, but strong enough to withstand backcountry weather. The Ozark Trail offers an attractive price-to-space ratio with nearly 34 square feet of interior space, two 10-square-foot vestibules, and a peak height of 42 inches—all above average for its category and roomier than my buddy’s high-end, MSR two-person tent (29-square-foot interior, 39-inch peak height, two 7.5-square-foot vestibules). Weight (7 lbs. 9 oz.) and pack-down size (21 inches long and 8 inches wide) were another story, however; the Freelite weighs just 2 lbs. 5 oz. and registers about half the size when packed down.

Performance: The double-walled, freestanding Ozark Trail performed just as well as the Freelite, although it wasn’t as easy to transport and set up. It uses three separate poles in its pitch instead of the hubbed poles used by most top-end tents. The difference was on full display as we made camp; my buddy easily erected his tent while I struggled to set up mine in 15-mph winds. However, it was hard to find a significant difference otherwise. The Ozark has a strong pitch thanks to its heavy fiberglass poles, four pre-attached guy lines, recycled poly taffeta construction, and Velcro straps that secure the fly to the poles. It even has two pop-out vents on the fly to help with ventilation.

Verdict : Not a bad buy for short trips. The Ozark Trail isn’t as easy to set up or carry as top-end tents, and won’t last as many years due to its hardware (plastic fly clips and zippers that are easy to bend), but it is super spacious, provides adequate weather protection, and is significantly less expensive.

Bakeey 80L Outdoor Backpack

Bakeey 80L Outdoor Backpack ($47) vs. Gregory Katmai 65L ($300)

Tale of the tape: Backpacks are the lynchpin of any hiking trip. They need to be durable yet lightweight, and big enough to swallow gear yet small enough to comfortably carry. On paper, the Bakeey looks great—15 more liters of space than the Katmai for about a sixth of the price. A closer look made me hesitate: There’s no internal frame for structure, it lacks padding on the shoulder straps and hipbelt, and the top lid is barely big enough to hold a rain jacket. The two side and one front pocket are much smaller than those on the Katmai, and there’s no access to the inside through the bottom sleeping bag/dirty laundry pocket, making the Bakeey a one-way-in, one-way-out pack. Weights are similar, about 5 pounds each, but the Bakeey is made from Oxford fabric while the Katmai is 100 percent nylon.

Performance: Carrying this backpack was torture. My buddy loaded the Katmai to the gills, and it wore comfortably thanks to the strong internal frame. The Bakeey, however, became bloated, misshaped, and almost unusable when full; it bulged out the back and fit awkwardly. The pockets are small and don’t close when full (cheap zippers), and durability is a huge concern: The ends of the straps frayed after two days.

Verdict : Filling the Bakeey with bulky equipment didn’t help, but there was no comparing the two packs. I would not trust this pack deep in the backcountry, nor would I carry it again anywhere.

Slumberjack 30°F Shadow Mountain Hooded Sleeping Bag

Sleeping Bag

Slumberjack 30°F Shadow Mountain Hooded Sleeping Bag ($50) vs. Therma-a-Rest Saros 32°F ($180)

Tale of the tape: Weighing a whopping 6 pounds, the Slumberjack is at least three times the size of my buddy’s sleeping bag when packed down, and I barely get it through the opening of my pack. This set the tone for a stressful game of Tetris and forced me to strap gear, such as my camp chair, to the outside of the pack. When bedtime came and I got into it for the first time, things got even worse.

Performance: Brrr. The Slumberjack comes with a removable fleece liner that kept me alive on a low-40s night; the extra insulating layer was the only thing preventing total misery. The bag’s roomy rectangular design (35 by 88 inches) trapped cold air in its empty spaces, and the wide-mouth opening does not have a hood, meaning heat escaped and cold air came in when I rolled over.. Meanwhile, the sleek shape, narrow neck, and hooded design of the Saros kept my buddy toasty—I could hear him snoring most of the night.

Verdict: Don’t even think about it. The Slumberjack is unfit for a backpacking trip in every way, and even car campers should be wary due to its inability to hold in heat. Spend the money on a better bag.

Sugift Sleeping Pad

Sleeping Pad

Sugift Sleeping Pad ($31) vs. UST Freestyle ($109)

Tale of the tape: Sleeping pads are one of the most overlooked contributors to comfort in the backcountry, offering insulation from the cold, hard ground. The Freestyle is about an inch thicker (3.5 inches versus 2.4 inches) and a half pound lighter than the Sugift, which weighs 1 lb. 7 oz. Both pack down to the size of a 1-liter Nalgene, and neither are insulated for winter conditions—the Freestyle has an R-value of 2, and the Sugift doesn’t list one, so I assume the worst (1 or 2). The Freestyle inflates in about a minute using a sack pump, while the Sugift has a built-in foot pump of similar efficiency.

Performance: I awoke pleasantly surprised with the Sugift. I was highly skeptical of a sleeping pad with a built-in foot pump, as it seems very detached from backcountry reality (I can’t stand up in my tent, am not going to lay it down in the dirt and stomp on it with my boot, etc). But it worked great when treated like a hand pump, inflating fully with about twenty CPR compressions. The headrest is thick and useful as a built-in pillow, and it was comfortable to lay on, even atop rocks. One of my favorite attributes was that the pad has a snap system that keeps it aligned as you roll it up, so that it fits easily back into the stuff sack, no wrestling needed. That said, I could tell that the high-30s/low 40s temperatures were the lowest it could handle—it was doing the sleeping bag no favors and definitely contributed to my chilly night.

Verdict: Give it a try. If you’re looking to cut costs on short, fair-weather trips in summer, a sleeping pad like the Sugift can suffice. It seems reasonably durable, and it wouldn’t take too many trips to get your money’s worth.

Nortiv 8 Mens Hiking Boots

Nortiv 8 Mens Hiking Boots ($50) vs. Oboz Sawtooth X Mid ($150)

Tale of the tape: Footwear is incredibly important on the trail. If your feet get tired or uncomfortable, your entire body will follow. So while it’s appealing that the Nortiv cost a third of the price, I waswary due to the fact it’s made of mostly synthetic leather while the Oboz is made of oiled nubuck. Pushing on the steel toe, you feel some give in the Nortiv, whereas the Oboz doesn’t budge. Lace loops on the Nortiv are hard-plastic, but metal on the Oboz. Both soles seem equally “grippy,” are water-resistant, and of the same bulk.

Performance: In the beginning, the Nortiv performed well. The sole was comfortable, the grip excellent over rocks and boulders, and they felt noticeably lighter than the Oboz (22 and 28 oz per boot, respectively). But over time, durability and support trended in favor of the Oboz: Its fit and design matches the shape of your foot, whereas the Nortiv is a wider, less-defined last, amd my foot moved around and formed hot spots. The weight of my pack exacerbated this, and going downhill was unpleasant due to al the foot movement. Breathability was also an issue because the Nortiv only has mesh on the upper ankle, resulting in sweaty toes and feet. At the end of the hike, I was happy to take them off.

Verdict : Spend the extra cash. There’s no body part worth investing in more than your feet. Skimping may work in the short term, but will cause blisters and foot issues down the road.

Allforth Convertible Pants

Hiking Pants

Allforth Convertible Pants ($35) vs. Sahara Convertible Pants ($80)

Tale of the tape: Backcountry clothing must be light, durable, comfortable, and, perhaps most importantly, dry quickly. To that end, both pants are made of a quick-dry nylon blend, have cargo pockets, and are designed to convert into shorts by zipping off the lower pant legs. The Sahara has color-coded thigh zippers to help determine right from left when reattaching; the Allforth has no coding.

Performance: I’ve worn more comfortable pants. Even though both are nylon blends, you can definitely feel a difference in the material quality—the Sahara smooth and soft, the Allforth rough and crinkly. Otherwise, these versatile, quick-drying pants perform as expected, drying in a matter of minutes, wicking away sweat, and providing lots of pocket storage for personal items. They were easy to walk in and allowed for full knee bends with no resistance when stepping up boulders. The Allforth’s brushed aside juniper branches without any signs of tearing, and showed no signs of a short life or durability concerns.

Verdict: Toss up. If you prioritize comfort over price, upgrade to something nicer. Otherwise, the Allforths will do the trick and should last you a season or two.

EEEkit LED 5000 Lumens Headlamp

4Green Ultralight Backpacking Chair ($43) vs. REI Flexlite Air Chair ($100)

Tale of the tape: Backcountry chairs are a luxury item by definition, but one that’s light, packable, and supportive can make a campfire that much more comfortable. The 4Green (2 lbs. 10 oz.) is more than double the weight of the Flexlite (1 lb.), although they are both reasonably light and take up the same amount of space—16 inches in length and 5 inches wide. The 4Green can support 300 pounds of weight; the Flexlite 250.

Performance: Other than a few extra pounds, there’s nothing to fear about the 4Green chair. It’s just as easy to assemble as the REI chair, reasonably light, packs down small, and is really sturdy thanks to its aero-grade aluminum alloy frame. The seat height ( 15 inches ) is noticeably higher  than the Flexlite (11 inches), making it easier to get into and out of, and it even comes with a detachable back pillow and a side pocket for personal items.

Verdict : Weight aside, there was no drawback to the 4Green. If an extra pound or two is no biggie, save the cash.

EEEkit LED 5000 Lumens Headlamp

EEEkit LED 5000 Lumens Headlamp ($15) vs. BioLite Headlamp 750 ($100)

Tale of the tape: Headlamps advertise all kinds of fancy numbers, but at the end of the day, they need to do two simple things: provide enough illumination for you to see in total darkness, and have enough battery efficiency to last the length of your trip. The BioLite has more than double the battery capacity of the EEEkit (3000 versus 1200 milliamp hours). Both are rechargeable via USB and offer several different light modes, including red light. The EEEKit is just a tenth of the price, however, and is much lighter—the Biolite has a bulky battery pack on the back, which makes it heavier on the head.

Performance: Don’t be fooled by the number of lumens (5000 for the EEEKit, 750 for the BioLite); this test proved beyond doubt that a lower number of lumens can produce a brighter, more useful light. Despite having 4,250 less lumens, the BioLite proved the more effective headlamp, shining brighter and farther in all scenarios. The EEEkit worked fine around camp, but doesn’t have the distance for wayfinding. It was like comparing sunlight to moonlight in the way they lit up the night. The BioLite could illuminate things clearly 50 yards away, while the EEEkit would have trouble reaching it at all. The EEEkit also skimps on practical necessities, like a locking feature to prevent it from turning on in your bag accidentally—a feature I find imperative for backcountry travel.

Verdict : Invest in a good light. The EEEKit will suffice on the occasional backpack around camp, but most of its bells and whistles are superfluous (like motion-activated mode), its bulb housing feels cheap and easily breakable, and it is not cut out for long-distance wayfinding.

Top Takeaways

Trying to slash your budget? Consider these factors when deciding where to cut costs.

  • Durability versus usage. While many of the cheaper products worked well in the short term, the issue of durability is a huge question in the long run. Consider your projected usage. Occasional backpackers can get by with, say, a cheaper tent, while someone camping every weekend may want to upgrade.
  • How much is weight worth to you? Many items, like tents, sleeping bags, and camp chairs can be had at a discount if you’re willing to carry extra weight. Consider how far you’ll be hiking and how much you can carry
  • Some skimps require splurges later . For example, if you are going to save money by buying a heavy, bulky sleeping bag and tent, you’ll need to splurge on a big, high-quality backpack to lug it all around comfortably.
  • Know the return policies. People love REI for their favorable return policies, but remember, you can return stuff to Walmart, too. Give budget gear a try on short, low-risk trips first to see how it performs.

On occasions when you need a hands-free storage compartment in a compact size, mini backpacks can offer the best of both worlds. These days, they are back in style, and you can find numerous brands producing them with different features.

From zipped pockets to internal compartments and waterproof materials, mini backpacks are perfect for everything from brunch to traveling.

We’ll also be discussing some of the main pointers to keep in mind when buying a mini backpack, so you can find the right one for you.

Mini Backpack

Before you buy a mini backpack, there are several crucial things to consider. From the size to the number of storage compartments and outside pockets, mini backpacks have varying usability features.

The material also plays a factor, as you might benefit from waterproof or water-resistant options. You can also look for backpacks with padded belts or straps and a reinforced back to comfortably fit and protect the contents.

Here’s a detailed overview of the most important things to keep in mind when buying a mini backpack:

Mini backpack zippers

Sometimes the simplest options are the best ones, especially when it comes to a compact backpack. In general, luxury materials are not required, so a simple plastic zipper is often the best choice . Some backpacks have reinforced metal zippers, but heavy-duty zippers can snag.

Outside Pockets

Mini backpack outside pockets

Having a large inner compartment is one thing, but what about pockets? Every mini backpack worth its salt will have zipped pockets , which provide the best storage space for personal items such as sunglasses, phones, or earbuds.

If you are going to place something heavier into the inner compartment — like a tablet or even a pocketbook — you need to have additional side pockets. This way, your smaller items will be protected from tumbling around and possibly getting damaged.

Multiple Compartments

Mini backpack multiple compartments

Besides zipped pockets, another great way of preserving your items within a backpack is to find one with multiple compartments. A mini backpack with several inner compartments will allow for the separation of larger items and smaller items .

Bottom Line: Different compartments allow for proper organization, and some backpacks even have smaller zipped pockets inside. This will help protect fragile items from damage.

Compact Size

Mini backpack size

What makes mini backpacks so great is that they are half the size of regular backpacks . They are a stylish, lightweight accessory that can replace your purse for storing your essentials.

The usual size of mini backpacks is in the range of 12 inches in length and 10 inches wide, but it greatly varies depending on the brand and the model.

The beauty of backpack coolers is that they combine the functionality of outstanding traditional coolers with the portability of a backpack, making it a must-have for outdoor enthusiasts. We tested 23 backpack coolers that are comfortable to wear and keep your drinks ice-cold for hours whether you’re spending a beach day with the family or hiking solo.

When testing the backpack coolers in our New York City lab, we evaluated and compared the bags based on design, capacity, portability, durability, and insulation. In the ensuing several months, we put them to use in parks, beaches, and rooftops to see how they held up over time. (Read more about our testing process below.) Our favorite backpack coolers have plenty of padding and adjustable straps for comfort, don't leak at all, and keep our seltzer cans perfectly chilled for several hours.

Best Overall

Icemule boss 30.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Insulation 5 /5
  • Maneuverability 5 /5
  • Durability 4.8 /5

It’s a heavy-duty backpack cooler designed for outdoor use like camping, kayaking, or hiking.

The backpack feels a little bulky to wear.

The IceMule Boss 30 is fully equipped for any type of outdoor activity like a solo camping trip or family beach day . After regularly using this bag for five months, we found it perfect for keeping items ice-cold, especially on day trips. This heavy-duty backpack cooler is easy to pack with up to 24 cans and ice thanks to the roll-top that opens up to reveal a spacious rectangular main compartment. The backpack is made with IceMule’s welded MuleSkin fabric that is designed to be ultra-durable and waterproof. There’s an air valve that can be opened to fill up the insulated layer with air so the backpack can float, too. The pack is clearly designed with durability and function at the forefront and it showed during testing. We also like the insulated side and front pockets for storing snacks separately, and the adjustable backpack straps are padded for extra comfort, which helps distribute weight to offset the slightly bulky feel of the large cooler.

Best Multi-use

Rei co-op cool trail pack cooler.

  • Insulation 4 /5
  • Durability 5 /5

The cooler insert can be removed so the bag can be used as a regular backpack.

There was quite a bit of leakage and melted ice after two hours.

We think the ability to use the REI Co-op Cool Trail Pack Cooler as a backpack cooler or as a regular hiking backpack makes it a winner for versatility. After regularly using this bag for five months on weekend trips , camping trips, and days at the beach, we love that it can fit absolutely everything you need, from drinks to snacks. We even love it for grocery shopping. The backpack has an excellent capacity that can fit 20 cans with ease. There are also several exterior pockets that are useful for other items like a water bottle or utensils. The adjustable straps and back panel are nicely padded with mesh fabric so the backpack was comfortable and breathable to wear while testing. However, if the backpack tips onto its side, a noticeable amount of melted ice can leak out, and after two hours, most of the ice had turned to water. While the drinks were still very cold, we wish the zippers had been a bit more leak-resistant.

The Details: 22 x 16 x 8.5 inches | 30.5 liters capacity | 3.5 pounds

Best Soft Bag

Icemule pro cooler 23l.

  • Design 4.8 /5

The capacity is generous for keeping lots of cans cold, and the bag can collapse down for easy storage.

It doesn’t have any other storage besides the insulated main compartment.

If you’re looking for a backpack cooler that doesn’t have a structured rectangular shape, consider the soft-side IceMule Pro. We love that the roll-top bag has more of a tote style to it, making it simple to load cans and ice into the main compartment. While the listed capacity is 18 cans, we could have easily fit double that amount plus ice thanks to the spacious interior. We were skeptical of the roll-top opening when it came to the leak test, but this backpack thoroughly impressed us by only leaking a drop or two after half the ice melted. Our drinks were still plenty chilled after two hours, and while we wish there was at least one external pocket, this backpack cooler is ideal for your next trip to the beach. After regularly using this bag for five months, we really appreciated that it collapses down for easy storage.

The Details: 11.02 x 14.17 x 16.93 inches | 23 liters capacity | 2.6 pounds

Best Lightweight

Igloo pursuit 24-can backpack.

  • Insulation 4.5 /5
  • Durability 3.5 /5

The backpack is comfortable to wear, as it doesn’t feel bulky or stiff.

There was some leakage and broken cans after our durability test.

Igloo’s Pursuit Cooler Backpack weighs just under 2 pounds, making it one of the lightest backpacks we tested that still has a generous capacity. We had no issues packing 24 cans and ice in the main compartment through the rectangle-shaped opening at the top of the bag. While the bag has a structured style that stands upright, the backpack didn’t feel stiff or cumbersome to carry around like other structured backpacks we tried. We appreciated the adjustable chest and backpack straps for evenly distributing weight, and the cushioned back panel added extra comfort, too. The only downside to this backpack cooler is the durability, as we noticed the polyester material and zippers couldn’t contain the water from the melted ice, which led to a noticeable amount of leaking coming from the compartment. However, we still think that the backpack cooler did a great job of keeping our drinks chilled, and it was noticeably comfortable and lightweight, making it a great option for light hikes or walks on the beach . We suggest using ice packs instead of ice cubes to avoid leakage issues.

The Details: 18.9 x 7.5 x 12.6 inches | 8.5 liters capacity | 1.9 pounds

Best for Commuters

Carhartt 2-in-1 insulated cooler backpack.

  • Capacity 4.5 /5
  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Insulation 4.7 /5

It looks like a standard backpack with a bottom insulated cooler for small food and drinks.

The top part of the backpack isn’t insulated and the bottom section leaked a bit after the two-hour mark.

We love that the Carhartt 2-in-1 Insulated Cooler Backpack has a regular backpack style with a small insulated section at the bottom. It has a top compartment with plenty of room for items that don’t need to be chilled. For snacks and drinks, the bottom compartment is insulated and has enough room for 10 cans plus ice for keeping everything cold on the go. Although the bottom leaked a bit of water after it sat for two hours with cans and ice, the drinks were still cold. We wouldn’t pack electronics or anything that could get damaged by water in this. Still, we were impressed with the comfortable and functional design of the bag, which has a few external pockets for accessories. It was super comfortable to carry and felt like a normal backpack but with added padding that makes it much more comfortable, even when packed full.

The Details: 12.5 x 8 x 17.75 inches | 4.25 liters capacity | 2.1 pounds

Best Dual-compartment

Pelican dayventure backpack cooler.

  • Maneuverability 4.5 /5

The separate top and bottom compartments make it easy to store a range of items for easy organization.

The cans in the bottom compartment were colder than the ones in the top compartment after two hours.

For packing a variety of food and drinks, we recommend the sleek, dual-compartment Pelican Dayventure Backpack Cooler. The roll-top backpack has a larger top section that could fit 16 cans, and the separate bottom compartment fit about six cans plus ice. We discovered that after two hours, most of the ice had melted, but the drinks in the lower part were still frigid, whereas the cans in the top part were cold but not as chilled as the drinks above. Despite most of the ice melting over the course of a few hours, the waterproof sealed zippers and TPU-coated nylon material kept all of the water inside of the cooler without any leakage. After five months of regularly using this pack, we found it to be extremely durable, but a bit bulky when storing. Still, the back of this pack is extremely well-padded, as are the straps, making this a super comfortable choice for weekends away.

The Details: 12.1 x 7.1 x 21.7 inches | 13-liter top, 4-liter bottom capacity | 3.1 pounds

Most Comfortable

Arctic zone welded backpack cooler.

Arctic Zone

  • Insulation 4.8 /5
  • Durability 3.8 /5

The padded back panel and curved, adjustable straps made the fit comfortable and customizable.

The top zipper leaked a bit and several cans were dented or popped.

While schlepping food and drinks to the beach or lake can sometimes be a hassle, the Arctic Zone High Performance Welded Backpack Cooler will make the trek a lot more comfortable. The back panel is lined with a thick foam, and the adjustable backpack straps are also padded and have a slight curve for a natural and customizable fit. Despite the impressive 24-can capacity, we found the bag to be noticeably comfortable with ample padding at the hip and arms. We’re big fans of the dual-compartment design that makes it easy to pack food and cans separately for a waterside picnic. Throughout five months of testing, we did notice that the bottom zipper can sometimes stick and the top zippers allow water to drip out, but the zipper is not advertised as leak-proof, so we still think the backpack does a solid job of containing most melted ice. In our lab, we found that the insulation kept the cans very cold after two hours, and only one popped during our drop test for durability.

The Details: 15.5 x 8.25 x 21.5 inches | 16 cans on top, 8 cans on bottom capacity | 3.2 pounds

Best Floatable

Rtic backpack soft cooler.

  • Maneuverability 4.3 /5

The backpack felt very durable during testing, and it has ample padding for extra comfort.

There aren’t any pockets for additional storage.

Beach goers and river rafters will appreciate the floatable and waterproof RTIC Backpack Soft Cooler. The exterior nylon material resembles the feel of an inflatable raft and the zipper teeth felt sturdy and watertight. After five months of regularly using this cooler boating, on day trips, and to the park, it has been through a lot, but only shows minor scuffs. After throwing the packed cooler off of a table during lab tests, all of the 20 cans packed inside remained in perfect, chilled condition, and there wasn’t any spillage from the melted ice. The exterior also had no damage or scuff marks from a little rough handling, and although the backpack felt a little heavy to carry, the plush padding in the backing and the adjustable straps provided plenty of comfort and even weight distribution. We wish that there were a few pockets for extra storage, but we don’t think that is a deal-breaker since kayakers or boaters will appreciate the waterproofness and float-ability of the backpack in the event that it lands in the water.

The Details: 12 x 6 x 16 inches | 20 cans capacity | 3.7 pounds

Best Budget

Tourit cooler backpack.

  • Insulation 3.8 /5
  • Maneuverability 4.8 /5

It looks like a regular, stylish, backpack.

A few cans were dented during our tests with one breaking open.

When you want to enjoy a casual picnic in the park without feeling weighed-down with a pack for the rest of the day, this multifunctional backpack cooler won't ruin your vibe. With a variety of neutral colors to choose from, this cooler looks like any other day bag, but has the functionality of a high-quality cooler. There are two mesh water bottle pockets on each side of the backpack, a zip pocket on the lid that can easily fit extra snacks, a slim front pocket for plates and silverware, plus the great interior cooler space that can fit up to 20 cans and plenty of food. While the pack is easy to carry, you may not want to wear it packed full when walking long distances as there are no hip or sternum straps. We also found the bag to leak when it's on its side, so highly recommend using ice packs instead of loose ice when taking this bag out for a day. Still, at the end of our tests, the cans were about as cold as they’d be coming out of a refrigerator and we loved the extra pockets for keeping all of your favorite foods organized.

Other Backpack Coolers We Liked

The backpack coolers listed below were close to making our top list, but they fell slightly short during our lab tests for various reasons. We still think these are great options, though.

Cotopaxi Hielo Backpack Cooler : The stylish backpack was comfortable to wear, and it has a solid 20-can capacity, but it leaked a noticeable amount of water out of the zippers.

Magellan Outdoors Pro Leakproof 24-can Backpack Cooler : The backpack feels premium and very durable, but it leaked quite a bit when it was tipped over and not all of the cans were cold after several hours in the cooler.

Coleman 28 Can Soft Backpack Cooler : We love the comfort and versatility of this bag, but the backpack style just isn't functional for holding ice. It leaks a lot as the ice melts and would get everything in the front pocket wet. This bag is best used with ice packs or to transport cold items short distances.

T+L’s expert product testers spent a day in our New York City lab testing 23 backpack coolers from notable outdoor brands like Yeti, Igloo, IceMule, and more. We evaluated each backpack based on design, capacity, portability, durability, and insulation to rate them on a scale of one to five.

After weighing each bag and closely examining the quality and functionality of the zippers and pockets, we packed the main compartments with as many 12-ounce cans as the interior could hold comfortably. Then, we repacked the backpacks with ice and cans to judge the capacity and prepare for the timed insulation test where each bag sat for two hours. When the timers went off, we tipped over the coolers to see which ones had the most melted ice and leakage. We also checked to see how cold the cans were, and if any broke or were dented after being packed.

After completing our lab tests, the backpack coolers were sent into the real world for testers to use over a five-month period. They tested the coolers while camping, on picnics, at the beach, hauling groceries, and more.

In the end, our favorite backpack coolers were easy to pack, comfortable to wear, kept our drinks chilled, and didn’t leak (too much, at least). We kept the prices hidden from our testers so they could only compare the fairness of the price to the backpack cooler’s performance after the test was complete.

Tips for Buying a Backpack Cooler

Consider storage features.

Not all backpack coolers come with extra storage for items besides food or drink, so it’s important to consider what kind of special features you want, like slip pockets for water bottles, zippered pockets for accessories, or separated compartments for food or snacks. If you’re looking for a backpack cooler with a little more versatility for different activities, be sure to get one with plenty of storage solutions.

Buy for your intended use

Some backpack coolers are specifically designed for a variety of activities like hiking, going into the office, or kayaking. If you’re planning on bringing food or drinks near or into the water, opt for a backpack cooler with watertight zippers and floatable materials for river rafting, boating, or other waterside activities. For office-goers or casual picnickers, consider getting a cooler with a more traditional backpack style or dual compartments so you can use the bag for different occasions.

Plan to use ice packs instead of ice

Nearly all of the backpack coolers we tested had some level of leakage — even our top performers. We suggest using leak-proof ice packs instead of actual ice when carrying a backpack cooler.

You should always consult the instructions that come with your backpack cooler, but in the event that guidelines aren’t included, you can consult the manufacturer’s website or rinse the backpack using soapy water.

Backpack coolers are made with insulation that’s designed to keep the contents of the bag cold over a period of time. While you can certainly use a backpack for snacks and drinks, it won’t keep the items temperature-regulated like a backpack cooler can.

We recommend packing a backpack cooler with ice and/or ice packs first as a bottom layer. Then, we suggest packing heavier items like cans or bottles followed by your softer items like sandwiches and snacks. Top your backpack cooler off with another layer of ice or another ice pack to ensure your items stay extra cold.

Backpack coolers can be used as personal items or even carry-on bags as long as they meet standard size requirements. However, you must be sure to only use ice packs as you cannot bring a cooler filled with ice through airport security.

The best vacuum storage bags make the most of your space by removing the air inside and sealing it tight. Many use a vacuum or hand pump to suck out all the air, while some travel-friendly space bags can actually be hand-pressed shut. Because of this, they're great for packing out-of-season clothes, bedding and more into small spaces like under your bed or inside your suitcase .

After consulting our in-house experts and scouring online reviews, we've rounded up the best vacuum storage bags to shop on Amazon, starting at just $8 (with fast, free shipping to boot!).

The original Spacesaver vacuum storage bags are our top pick for heavy-duty storage needs where damage protection is imperative, like cross-country moves and travel. You can use either the included hand pump or your vacuum to reduce volume by up to 80%, according to the brand. Choose from small to jumbo sizes and variety packs for all your storage needs.

Reviewers appreciate its ease of use and sturdy plastic . "I'm moving all the way across the country and was stressed out wondering how much of my clothing I could actually take with me. These Space Saver bags are a life saver!" wrote one five-star reviewer . "They are so easy to pack, zip and vacuum out the air. One of my best purchases ever here on Amazon (and I've made thousands)."

Stow bulky bedding, sweaters, pillows and more with these space-saving storage bags. You can either use the included hand pump or a standard vacuum cleaner to compress each bag and reduce volume by up to 80%, according to the brand. For under $20, this pack comes with four bag sizes to store different items: the smallest size fits six to eight sweaters while the largest fits a queen-sized bedding set.

The triple-sealed valve is designed to keep bags airtight so your items stay condensed, and the double-layered material is designed to be puncture- and scratch-resistant, making it more durable against damage. "They're strong and sturdy," one Amazon reviewer said . "They have great sizes and storage space, and they hold the seal (some for a year now)."

Skip the checked luggage line at the airport with these travel-friendly storage bags. Forté named the Ziploc Space Bag a long-standing Lab favorite. There's no need for a pump or a vacuum to take the air out — simply fill each with up to five pounds of clothing or bedding, seal it with the Ziploc slider and fold to press out the air. It also costs under $10 for a pack of two.

Since they don't require any bulky equipment, these bags are a great option for users on the go. The brand claims the bags reduce the volume of clothing and bedding by up to 75%. They're also waterproof and airtight per the brand, meaning they should help protect your items from damage caused by travel and storage.

Boasting more than 38,000 five-star reviews and counting, Amazon's #1 best-selling space saver bags claim to shrink the size of your items by up to 80%. This variety pack includes 20 bags, making them great for anyone moving houses or with lots of vacuum storage needs. The pack includes standard vacuum-sealable bags as well as travel bags that can be rolled to press out air — no pump required.

Waterproof and reusable (purported by the brand), the bags' valves and seals are designed to prevent expansion and keep moisture and debris out. "The quality of these bags is outstanding," one online shopper wrote . "I feel confident storing my clothing, bedding and other textiles knowing they are safe and well-preserved."

Whether you need to increase your under-bed storage space or condense your clothes on the go, this pack offers the most variety with six different-sized bags for all your needs . The standard bags range from pouch-sized bags for lingerie and T-shirts to extra-large bags for bedding sets and pillows . Each waterproof bag has a handy line to show you where to stop filling them, making it more intuitive to pack than other options on our list.

While it can be sealed with the included hand pump or a vacuum, we love that the travel bags can be rolled to seal out excess air sans tool if needed. "These were a game changer during our move," an Amazon reviewer wrote . "The sizes vary drastically, accommodating many different types of items from quilts to pillows as well as clothes."

Hefty is known for its durable garbage bags and freezer bags, but the brand also has a line of high-rated vacuum storage bags. Including three large and three extra-large sizes, Hefty's Shrink-Pak bags claim to be waterproof and reusable season after season, so you don't have to worry about moisture, dust or bugs ruining your items. Plus, you can simply press the air out with your hands and seal.

We love how the extra large bags have a zipper on the long side rather than the shorter top, making it easier to pack bedding supplies like pillows and comforters. Shoppers agreed, with one writing : "We just went through a very long, drawn-out move and the shrink bags have been a true lifesaver! We were able to put lots of our clothes, towels and blankets in storage while we shopped for a new house. When we finally started unpacking, everything looked exactly the way it did when it was packed!"

Outfitted with a stylish plaid print, we wouldn't mind keeping these space bags out in plain sight. And it's not just for aesthetics. Their unique woven texture provides a bit of grip to their exterior, helping them to stay in place better while stacked. The bags come in four sizes and packs of six to 26, making them great for small organization projects and large undertakings.

Plus, they compress with a vacuum or its included pump. Reviewers appreciate the variety of sizes and ease of use, too. "I love these sealable storage bags!" one shopper wrote . "The quality is fantastic, very well-made and sturdy. I really like the assortment of colors and sizes, too, so much so that I ordered a second box!"

If you need to store cumbersome items like king-sized duvets, foam cushions or dog beds , Vacwel's XXL bags offer an impressive storage capacity of 47 by 35 inches . Featuring a nylon lining for extra durability, the brand claims these bags are waterproof and protect against dirt, bugs and dust. They even come with sticker labels to easily identify stored items.

"These bags are durable and got the job done," an Amazon shopper added . "I was able to vacuum seal large comforters and sheets! Very surprised at how many bedding items that I was able to put in the bags." Note that a pump is not included, so you'll need a vacuum handy to seal these bags.

Protect your out-of-season garments and make room for new pieces with these clever hanging storage bags on Amazon. You can stash up to five pieces of clothing inside each, including coats, jackets and suits . Just place one included hanger on each rotating ring, zip it up and vacuum all the air out. The vertical storage design keeps your clothes clean and organized until you're ready to wear them again.

"I get immense joy out of packing away my winter clothes in the Taili hanging bags," an Amazon reviewer said . "[It] shrink wraps everything into compact boards ... It was very easy and effective to use."

How we chose the best vacuum storage bags

listicle linebreak

With so many different options on the market, it can be difficult to determine which vacuum storage bags are worth buying. To help you find the right pick for your needs, we consulted our experts in the GH Institute Cleaning Lab and vetted customer reviews to bring you a range of vacuum storage bags that suit a variety of purposes.

How do you choose the best vacuum storage bags?

Choosing the best vacuum storage bags depends on your individual needs — do you just need to store a few seasonal sweaters, or pack up your whole house for a move? According to, the size and dimensions can help you figure out which options are right for you.

" They should be large enough to hold multiple items and be durable enough to use from year to year ," Forté says. For those who don't own a vacuum (or have one readily accessible), opt for a bag that can be rolled to compress or can be hand pumped.

What do you put in a space bag?

listicle linebreak

While you might want to use your vacuum storage bag to compress bulky items like winter coats and duvets, Forté warns against vacuum-sealing down-filled items . Instead, she recommends only compressing them halfway.

"Otherwise, you risk crushing and breaking the down feathers and they may then not be as lofty or insulate as well," Forté says. Additionally, be sure not to store wet items, or you risk creating mold and causing long-term damage.

How long can you store items in a vacuum storage bag?

listicle linebreak

Forté recommends using storage bags for short-term and seasonal storage . "Keep items in them too long, and you risk permanently setting creases or crushing and flattening items that are supposed to be lofty and puffy," Forte says. For best results, be sure to check the recommended storage time on your bag's instructions.

Airlines required to refund passengers for canceled, delayed flights

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced the new rules Wednesday.

Good news for airline travelers: the Department of Transportation on Wednesday announced it is rolling out new rules that will require airlines to automatically give cash refunds to passengers for canceled and significantly delayed flights.

"This is a big day for America's flying public," said Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg at a Wednesday morning news conference. Buttigieg said the new rules -- which require prompt refunds -- are the biggest expansion of passenger rights in the department's history.

Airlines can no longer decide how long a delay must be before a refund is issued. Under the new DOT rules, the delays covered would be more than three hours for domestic flights and more than six hours for international flights, the agency said.

This includes tickets purchased directly from airlines, travel agents and third-party sites such as Expedia and Travelocity.

The DOT rules lay out that passengers will be "entitled to a refund if their flight is canceled or significantly changed, and they do not accept alternative transportation or travel credits offered."

PHOTO: A person walks through the terminal as planes remain at gates at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington, Va., Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2023.

DOT will also require airlines to give cash refunds if your bags are lost and not delivered within 12 hours.

The refunds must be issued within seven days, according to the new DOT rules, and must be in cash unless the passenger chooses another form of compensation. Airlines can no longer issue refunds in forms of vouchers or credits when consumers are entitled to receive cash.

Airlines will have six months to comply with the new rules.

PHOTO: U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg speaks at a press conference at the Reagan National Airport on April 24, 2024.

"Passengers deserve to get their money back when an airline owes them -- without headaches or haggling," Buttigieg said in a statement.

The DOT said it is also working on rules related to family seating fees, enhancing rights for wheelchair-traveling passengers for safe and dignified travel and mandating compensation and amenities if flights are delayed or canceled by airlines.

Buttigieg said the DOT is also protecting airline passengers from being surprised by hidden fees -- a move he estimates will have Americans billions of dollars every year.

The DOT rules include that passengers will receive refunds for extra services paid for and not provided, such as Wi-Fi, seat selection or inflight entertainment.

The rules come after the agency handed Southwest Airlines a record $140 million fine for its operational meltdown during the 2022 holiday travel season.

MORE: New whistleblower claims put Boeing's quality control under more scrutiny

Buttigieg said Southwest's fine sets a "new standard" for airlines and passenger rights.

"To be clear, we want the airline sector to thrive. It is why we put so much into helping them survive the pandemic and honestly it's why we're being so rigorous on passenger protection," he said.

Buttigieg reiterated that refund requirements are already the standard for airlines, but the new DOT rules hold the airlines to account and makes sure passengers get the "refunds that are owed to them."

"Airlines are not enthusiastic about us holding them to a higher standard," Buttigieg said, adding that he "knows they will be able to adapt to this."

Airlines for America, the trade association for the country's leading passenger and cargo airlines, told ABC News in a statement that its members "offer a range of options -- including fully refundable fares." Is said consumers are "given the choice of refundable ticket options with terms and conditions that best fit their needs at first search results."

The group said the 11 largest U.S. airlines issued $43 billion in customer refunds from 2020 through 2023 nearly $11 billion in refunds just last year.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

travel backpacks walmart

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

travel backpacks walmart

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

travel backpacks walmart

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

travel backpacks walmart

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

travel backpacks walmart

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
