Opting for Inside Cabins

When planning a budget-friendly cruise for under 30s, one option to consider is opting for inside cabins . While these cabins may not have a view of the ocean, they are often more affordable than cabins with a balcony or window. Inside cabins can be a great way to save money and allocate your budget towards other aspects of the cruise, such as activities and excursions . Additionally, staying in an inside cabin can provide a cozy and intimate atmosphere, perfect for those looking for a more private experience. However, it’s important to note that inside cabins may not be suitable for those who are prone to claustrophobia or prefer natural light. If you’re someone who spends most of your time exploring the ship and participating in onboard activities, an inside cabin can be a practical choice that allows you to maximize your cruise experience without breaking the bank.

If you’ve never been on a cruise, you might be picturing the older demographic playing shuffleboard, eating dinner at 4:00, and talking about their investments. But you’d be wrong to think that.

Don’t overlook cruising if you’re looking for an exciting spring break adventure.

Modern cruise ships are an excellent vacation choice for young adults and college students. Cruising offers plenty of entertainment, thrills, and partying at an affordable price – even on a student’s budget.

Because not all cruises are the same, choosing the right cruise line can make or break your vacation.

So, what are the best cruises for young adults and college students?

From my experience as a young adult sailing on over a dozen cruises, I can tell you that  Virgin Voyages  is the best cruise line for young adults and college students. But if you are cruising on a budget,  Carnival Cruises, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Line  are great choices.

Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about cruising as a young adult.

The Best Cruises for Young Adults and College Students

If you are looking for younger crowds and a party at sea, the  best cruises for young adults are Virgin Voyages, Royal Caribbean International, Carnival Cruise Line, and Norwegian Cruise Line .

Cruise lines like Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises, MSC Cruises, P&O Cruises, and Holland America are popular but cater to an older demographic. Disney Cruise Line is a better cruise line for kids and families .

The cruise lines on our list draw in younger crowds and offer incredible nightlife and parties at sea. Their cruise ships consist of some of the world’s largest vessels with high-thrill activities young adults love.

1. Virgin Voyages

The bow of scarlet lady docked in Key West Florida

Virgin Voyages is a unique adult-only cruise line purpose-built for young adults and millennials. The cruise line provides a laid-back atmosphere, incredible culinary experiences, and all-night parties.

Virgin Voyages is our pick for the best cruise line for young adults .

When sailing on Scarlet Lady, I participated in a late-night call at Bimini, thrilling entertainment in the Red Room, and all-night parties in the ship’s nightclub, The Manor.

Virgin Voyages has a more laid-back atmosphere compared to other mainstream cruise lines. The atmosphere and demographic are better suited to young adults who’d rather have a party cruise than play shuffleboard.

Scarlet Night on Virgin Voyages. The pool deck is full of passengers and crew throwing a party under the stars

The cruise line works hard, creating an energetic atmosphere. And there are overtly sexual undertones throughout the cruise.

Virgin’s award-wining cruise ships contain several amenities suited to young adults, including

  • a tattoo parlor
  • pajama party
  • a poker room
  • Scarlet Night dance party.

Culinary experiences are a top priority for Virgin Voyages.

Virgin’s cruise ships don’t have a buffet or main dining room. Instead, passengers can choose from Virgin’s more than 20 onboard restaurants and eateries. Each restaurant presents a unique dining experience, with menus created by Michelin-starred chefs.

And their effort pays off.

The food on Scarlet Lady was some of the best I’ve ever eaten. Not just the best food on a cruise ship, but anywhere.

The best part is that every restaurant is included in Virgin Voyages cruise fare .

So there are no hidden fees or upcharges.

Entertainment is another highlight for college students. The shows range from comedy to Cirque du Soleil-Esq acrobatics and everything in between. The nightly entertainment typically runs less than an hour, so you can return to partying without missing a beat.

At night, the Manor transforms into a two-story nightclub , where the party doesn’t stop until well into the morning.

The only downside is that Virgin Voyages cruises are more expensive than other cruise lines.

But the price is worth it when you consider that your Virgin Voyages cruise fare includes the following:

  • More than 20 restaurants and eateries
  • Onboard activities and entertainment
  • Fitness classes
  • Complimentary Virgin Voyages Wi-Fi
  • Water, coffee, tea, soda, and juice

In all, Virgin Voyages is our top pick for young adult cruisers.

2. Royal Caribbean International

A Royal Caribbean cruise is a choice for active young adults. Royal Caribbean’s fleet boasts some of the largest cruise ships in the world.

Their cruise ships offer plenty of high-thrill activities and entertainment options suited to young adult cruisers.

Royal Caribbean’s larger ships boast rock climbing walls, surfing simulators, zip lines, comedy shows, sky diving simulators, and more.

Additionally, Royal Caribbean offers low-cost cruise vacations perfect for students on a budget.

The cruise line offers plenty of short Bahamas itineraries. The short itineraries attract plenty of young cruisers, the right demographic for creating amazing late-night parties at sea.

Royal Caribbean’s CocoCay private island is another big draw for young travelers.

The private island offers an incredible experience that includes the following:

  • A water park
  • The tallest water slide in North America
  • White sand beaches
  • Complimentary lunch
  • A massive pool
  • A tethered hot air balloon

Young people looking for the party scene will love Royal Caribbean’s bars, nightclubs, and entertainment venues. Royal’s larger ship classes , the Oasis and Quantum-class ships, even have a bar with bionic bartenders.

3. Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Magic Departing Miami cruise port

Carnival Cruise Line is one of the most popular cruise ships among younger travelers. The cruise line’s popularity stems from its focus on the “fun factor.”

As the name suggests, Carnival’s cruises truly feel like a festival at sea with pool parties, dance classes, international DJs, fitness classes, and more.

Carnival attracts a young demographic because of its incredibly low cruise fares .

The low cruise fares make Carnival an attractive choice for young adults.

Plus, the younger demographic means you find some of the best parties on Carnival Cruise Line. The cruise line is known for its lively atmosphere and all-night parties.

Carnival is often known as the “fun cruise line” thanks to its programming of trivia, shows, outdoor activities, and live music.

The cruise line partners with celebrities like Guy Fieri and Shaquille O’Neal to offer unique dining spots.

One of Carnival’s most unique features is the craft brewery featured on some of their cruise ships, complete with their very own craft beers.

The one downside of cruising with Carnival is its popularity with young families. If you choose to spend your summer break on a Carnival cruise, it’s important to know that you will share the ship with many kids.

But if that doesn’t bother you, Carnival is one of the best cruise lines for your spring break vacation.

4. Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line is another great option for young adults who like to party. NCL is a popular cruise line for young adults because of its laid-back atmosphere and late-night parties.

Norwegian Cruise Line is one of the best cruise lines for traveling  solo .

Norwegian’s fleet of cruise ships offers plenty of solo cabins. The solo staterooms waive the single supplement, making your cruise much more affordable.

The studio cabins are 100-square-foot accommodations and provide access to the Studio Lounge, where you can meet other solo travelers.

Don’t let the small cabin size scare you. With plenty of activities and entertainment on the ship, you won’t spend much time in your cabin.

NCL cruise ships offer

  • go-kart tracks
  • virtual reality game rooms
  • waterslides
  • dance clubs
  • rock climbing

There’s no shortage of exciting games and activities for young adults.

In addition to their top-tier casinos, young travelers will love the White Hot Party, ice bar, and vibrant nightlife.

How to Pick the Best Cruise

When is the best time for college students to go on a cruise.

The most critical factor determining the ship’s demographic is when you will set sail. As a rule of thumb, the best time of year for college students to go on a cruise is spring break, summer, or fall break.

As a general rule, you’ll find younger crowds and a better party atmosphere when school is out.

If you want to cruise with a younger crowd, booking a cruise during spring break or early summer is best. You will also find younger groups if you sail during late summer or Christmas break; however, you will share the ship with  families and young children .

If you want to sail with younger crowds but not too young, stick with spring break or early summer sailings. Cruises that sail during these times are full of young adults and have a vibrant nightlife.

Shorter Cruises = Younger Crowds

cruises for under 30s

Another critical factor is the length of your trip. The longer the cruise, the older the crowd.

Younger cruisers tend to take shorter cruise trips of 3-5 days to save money. In addition to being cheaper, booking a shorter cruise has the added benefit of greater flexibility in departure times.

Short cruises are great for college students looking to party and let loose with younger crowds. In recent years, cruise lines have made a big push into shorter cruises, and you can even find some of the new ships sailing with short itineraries. You can find plenty of quick sailing options that visit Mexico and the Bahamas.

Your Destination Matters

Don’t sail to Alaska or Antarctica if you want to party with a younger crowd. Alaskan, New England, and scenic river cruises appeal to older passengers who prefer a quiet and relaxing vacation.

In general, warm climates are where you will find the most vibrant nightlife and party atmosphere. Younger passengers gravitate towards the tropical climate, which offers drinks by the pool and beautiful beaches.

Bottom line: if you want to party with a younger crowd, book a sailing in a warm climate. Caribbean, Bahamas, and Mexican cruises tend to have the youngest passengers.

Newer Ships Have More to Do

As a young adult, you’re probably not looking for a quiet getaway to read by the pool and shuffleboard on the top deck.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

But if you’re looking for excitement and thrill, you’ll want to stick with newer cruise ships.

The newest and largest cruise ships offer more activities and amenities. Cruise lines are always trying to one-up each other. Newer cruise ships guarantee you’ll find more exciting activities better suited to younger cruisers.

Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises, MSC Cruises, and Holland America are popular but cater to an older demographic.

How can I Stay Safe While Cruising?

View from the pool deck of the Norwegian Cruise ship Pearl with live dj in the background

Regardless of where your cruise takes you, it is always important to keep safe while traveling. These simple tips can help you avoid trouble and stay safe:

Use your safe  – Cabins come with a safe. Use it. Keeping electronic devices, jewelry, money, documents, and passports in the safe is always a good idea to protect yourself from theft.

Don’t drink excessively  – Alcohol is a major factor in safety incidents aboard cruise ships. Be mindful of your limits, and pace yourself. There is plenty of alcohol on board, and it can be easy to get carried away. And never accept any drinks from a stranger.

Keep on top of handwashing  – Use the hand sanitizer provided in the ship’s dining areas. Norovirus is a common issue on cruise ships, and with thousands of passengers sharing a confined space, it is easy for germs to spread.

Book the sponsored excursions  – You’ll save money by booking shore excursions independently, but booking through your cruise line is always safer. The sponsored excursions cruise lines offer are vetted and insured to ensure the safety of you and your fellow passengers. Your safety is worth the price, even if it costs a few extra bucks.

Keep track of time  – Pay close attention to the arrival and departure times when you are in port. They are not suggestions, and your  ship will leave without you . We recommend arriving at your ship 30 minutes before the last call to avoid missing the boat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are cruise fares all-inclusive.

Cruise lines include many basic amenities in the base fare, but cruises are not all-inclusive . Your cruise fare typically includes meals in the main dining room and buffet, onboard entertainment, activities, and cabin accommodations.

The cruise fare generally doesn’t include specialty restaurants, Wi-Fi, alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, spa treatments, and shore excursions. It is good to see what’s included with your base fare and ensure you budget for the extra costs before booking your cruise.

Can I Drink Onboard the Cruise?

Most cruise lines, including Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Disney, and Princess, require passengers to be 21 to consume alcohol while onboard the ship. Norwegian Cruise Line allows passengers between the ages of 18 to 20 to consume alcohol while in international waters, provided they are traveling with a parent or guardian who signs a consent form at the front desk.

Don’t think you can fool the onboard bartenders. You will make all purchases through your cruise card when onboard the ship. If you attempt to sneak past the bartenders, they’ll flag you for trying to drink while underage. Cruise lines reserve the right to disembark passengers who get caught purchasing drinks for underage guests.

Tip: You can save money if your cruise line allows you to bring alcohol on the cruise ship .

What are the Bars and Nightclubs Like on a Cruise Ship?

You will be happy to know that cruise ships have active nightlife onboard. Whether you prefer a sports bar, dancing by the pool, or a karaoke bar, you will likely find it aboard your ship.

In addition to bars and lounges, most cruise ships have nightclubs full of partygoers dancing and singing well into the night. These elaborate clubs have insane light and sound systems and incredible dance parties hosted by scratch DJs.

Can I Gamble at the Cruise Casino?

Most cruise lines allow passengers over 18 to gamble at their onboard casinos. Remember that some older ships, and all Disney ships, don’t have a casino. But if you are sailing on a new vessel, you won’t need to worry, as  most cruise ships have casinos  full of slot machines, table games, and scheduled poker tournaments.

Tip: Cruise ship casinos have lower odds than your standard Vegas casino. For example, blackjack on a ship pays 6 to 5 compared to the standard 3 to 2 payout.

Can I Smoke Onboard the Ship?

Rules regarding smoking have become increasingly restrictive. All cruise lines prohibit smoking in cabins, and most don’t allow it on balconies. That said,  you can smoke on a cruise ship  in smoking areas on the outdoor decks, and many permit smoking in the casino.

Is there Internet on the Ship?

While at sea, the only internet connection is by satellite. To avoid roaming charges on your cruise , look into your cruise ship’s Wi-Fi package. In the past, cruise ships were notorious for having slow, expensive, and unreliable internet connections.

Today, passengers can find fast internet connections on modern cruise ships. Royal Caribbean, Princess, and Carnival have all made great efforts to speed up their internet connections, but it still won’t be as fast as you are used to, but it will get the job done.

What is the Best Way to Book a Cruise?

There are  many ways to book a cruise , including through the cruise line’s website, online, or through a travel agent. Although it’s easier to book online, you should consider using a travel agent, especially if this is your first cruise.

Booking a cruise is not as straightforward as booking a resort. A travel agent can help you find a cruise that fits your budget, not to mention they can get access to deals and group rates that you can’t find online. Travel agents get paid a commission through the cruise line and usually don’t charge you to book using their service.

The 4 Most Popular Cruises for Adults Under 30

Cruises for Adults: A fantastic vacation choice for adults  in their 20s and 30s is cruising. Contemporary cruise ships are vibrant and enjoyable places where adventure and nightlife easily mix, all at reasonable prices. The only thing younger travelers need to know is which cruise lines and itineraries will attract older, like-minded guests.

There are some important search criteria that young individuals need to think about. Younger couples and individuals with limited funds and yearly leave tend to be drawn to shorter cruises lasting seven nights or less. Additionally, search for itineraries that include overnight stays or a lot of exciting ports of call so you can experience the local nightlife.

Virgin Voyages, which will depart for Australia in December 2023, even has a beach club of its own, replete with DJs, pool parties, and nightly dancing.

While expensive, expedition cruises can also be attractive to tourists seeking nonstop action in remote wilderness areas such as the Amazon, the Arctic or Antarctica, and the Galapagos Islands, including hiking, snorkeling, kayaking, and more.

The onboard demography may be significantly skewed toward younger cruisers on theme cruises, which often have a unique and specialized itinerary. Under-40s are drawn to river cruise lines’ wine-themed excursions in large numbers. Young adult cruisers can expect an exciting dance party that lasts the entire duration of the voyage thanks to concert ships, dance festivals like Sixth Man, and many stages with hundreds of musicians.

1. Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean International

The Ships:   The choice of cruises for adults is a little more than a poolside beach read. You will find Royal Caribbean’s Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas to be especially well-suited. Try your hand at surfing on the FlowRider, scaling the rock wall, ice skating indoors, becoming PADI certified for scuba diving, or ziplining—all of these activities are available on board the ship.

After you’ve let off some steam, there’s plenty of opportunity to go to bars, see Broadway productions (such as “Grease,” “Mamma Mia!”, or “Cats”), and show off your dance skills at late-night clubs.

The Itineraries: Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas offer voyages across Australia, the South Pacific, and New Zealand during their six-month seasons, which run from October to April. Brilliance of the Seas will begin sailing across Australia and New Zealand in the summer of 2023–2024.

Alaskan Cruises: Do You Need a Passport?

A popular attraction for younger tourists is the private island of CocoCay, home to Royal Caribbean.

The following amazing experiences are available on the private island:

  • A water amusement park
  • North America’s tallest water slide
  • beaches with white sand
  • An enormous pool with zip lines
  • Along with more, a tethered hot air balloon

2. P&O Cruises

P&O Cruises

The Ships: Over the past few years, P&O’s cruising philosophy has changed significantly. New activities have been added to the P&OEdge program on all three of the company’s ships—Pacific Encounter, Pacific Adventure, and Pacific Explorer—as well as improved staterooms and increased dining options.

Zip-lining and funnel climbs are two new pleasures. Nearly half of the passengers on the cruise line are couples, more than 20% are groups of friends traveling together, and 31% are younger than 29.

Live music, nine bars, and four brand-new themed parties will keep party animals entertained. These include Back to School, Gatsby-themed, and Bianco, the P&O White Party, which has white beverages, a live DJ, and special effects like a smoke cannon and a snow finale.

More short trips and themed voyages centered on comedy, sports, and music—with options ranging from the 1980s and Elvis to the Australian Open—have been added to P&O’s itinerary.

The Itineraries: P&O trips provide extended trips to Queensland, the South Pacific, Melanesia, and Papua New Guinea, as well as year-round short cruises to nowhere. While Pacific Encounter provides sailings from Brisbane, Pacific Explorer, and Pacific Adventure depart from Sydney. There are also some departures from Perth, Adelaide, Cairns, and Melbourne on Pacific Explorer.

3. Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Cruise Line

Among younger passengers, Carnival Cruise Line is one of the most well-liked cruise lines. The cruise line’s emphasis on the “fun factor” is what makes it so popular.

As the name implies, pool parties, dance courses, international DJs, fitness classes, and more make Carnival cruises feel like true seaside festivals.

Carnival’s exceptionally low cruise tickets draw in cruises for adults. Cruise Cabins: Facts You Didn’t Know About Your Cabin

Additionally, Carnival Cruises for Adults hosts some of the greatest parties. The cruise company is well-known for its exciting environment and late-night festivities.

The water slides in the water park on Carnival Breeze are orange and yellow. Carnival is well-known for being the “fun cruise line” because of its live music, entertainment, trivia, and outdoor activities.

The cruise line offers special eating locations in collaboration with celebrities like Guy Fieri and Shaquille O’Neal.

The craft brewery on certain of Carnival’s cruise ships, replete with their specialty beers, is one of their most distinctive features. Carnival Cruise Line’s appeal to young families is its lone drawback. You should be aware that you will be traveling on a ship with a large number of children if you decide to take a Carnival cruise over your summer holiday. Carnival is among the greatest cruise lines for your spring break holiday; nevertheless, if that doesn’t worry you.

Itineraries: There are many different types of cruises available in Australia, ranging from two-day trips to 10-day expeditions throughout Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific. Hobart, Mooloolaba, Moreton Island, Noumea, the Isle of Pines, and Vila are just a few of the lengthy list of ports of call; longer trips may also include Singapore, Darwin, and Bali.

A boating trip in the Isle of Pines, a family-friendly Balinese experience in Bali, and a behind-the-scenes tour at Port Arthur are just a few of the excursions available for all ages. If you’re feeling adventurous, Carnival also provides cruises throughout the Caribbean and Europe, with stops at places like Marseille, Naples, Civitavecchia (Rome), Malta’s Valetta, and Rhodes, Greece.

4. Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages

The vessels Virgin currently operates two ships, Scarlet Lady and Valiant Lady, and one more, Resilient Lady, is scheduled to arrive in Australia in December 2023. One of the line’s primary selling points is that it is an adult-only cruise line with a minimum sailing age of 18, so don’t expect character parades or splash pools onboard. Instead, enjoy amenities like a tattoo parlor, a live DJ-filled atrium/club in the center of the ship, an extravagant pool party called Scarlet Night, and cocktails with the diva.

Venues include the first Korean BBQ at sea, Gunbae, a champagne bar, a veggie-focused restaurant called Razzle Dazzle, and a cocktail bar with a Mexican motif that serves tequila and mezcal. Along with one of the greatest spas at sea, the ship has hot and cold pools, a sauna, a steam room, and mud rooms.

There are Rock Star Suites available that come with a guitar room and special access to Richard’s Rooftop Bar.

The Itineraries: From December 2023 to March 2024, Resilient Lady, with her Melbourne base, will provide cruises throughout Australia and New Zealand. Additionally, Scarlet Lady and Valiant Lady offer four- and five-night Caribbean itineraries that depart from Miami and include visits to Virgin’s private port in Bimini, which has a pool, fire pits, and a DJ, as well as an overnight stay or late-night sail away.

Virgin Cruises for Adults has several amenities, including Two pools, a gambling room, a tattoo parlor, and a pajama party scarlet dancing party at night. For Virgin Voyages, culinary experiences are of utmost importance.

There is no main dining room or buffet on Virgin Cruises’ ships. Alternatively, travelers have a selection of over 20 onboard eateries and restaurants from Virgin. Each restaurant’s dishes, created by chefs with Michelin stars, offer a unique dining experience.

Great singles cruises to book and meet fascinating people

Melinda Crow

Start humming the theme song to "The Love Boat" because we're going to do a deep dive into how to find the perfect singles cruises to book if you want to meet people.

Is it possible to meet your forever match on a cruise ship? Absolutely.

An editor I once knew found her true love on an expedition-style cruise. They married within months of returning home and now have two children. Whether it was the thrill of the expedition, the forced digital detox of a remote destination or the close quarters of a small ship, their relationship clearly blossomed on board.

Cruise ships offer a unique way to meet new and often fascinating people, whether you're looking for romance or simply want to enjoy the company of other people vacationing the same way you do.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

There are single cruisers on almost every ship. Some sail solo; others are in friend or family groups. Dining arrangements, onboard activities and port tours make meeting like-minded people easy. Also, it's socially acceptable to strike up conversations with others throughout the ship.

Some cruise lines make it even easier for singles to find each other with solo cabins clustered together and scheduled events for singles.

If you'd like to find companionship at sea, here are our top tips for making the most of a singles cruise.

Tips for making the most of a singles cruise

cruises for under 30s

As on dry land, activities are often the best way to meet people on a cruise. If you love to dance, go where the music is. If water sports are your thing, book a tropical cruise with a schedule of shore excursions that involve snorkeling, surfing, scuba diving and similar activities. Choose tours focused on wildlife watching, historical sites or food and beverage to meet shipmates who enjoy the same.

You'll often find other singles within shore excursion tour groups . However, you can increase your odds by joining social media groups specific to your cruise dates where you can connect pre-cruise with anyone cruising single.

In fact, there are dozens of social media groups dedicated to singles who love to cruise. Some groups focus on specific cruise lines, while others are broader in scope. Either way, they provide an easy opportunity to start a conversation with other singles before you ever set foot on the ship.

Your vessel's daily activity schedule is also a good place to find other singles. Check on the cruise line's app , on the interactive TV in your cabin or in the printed version (if there is one) for planned gatherings of singles, which are often pre-dinner meetups at bars.

A theme cruise is another way to meet people with similar interests. Sailings focus on country music, popular TV shows, wine tasting, crafting and other hobbies and interests. Not only will you likely find plenty of singles ready to mingle, but it might also be easier to strike up a conversation, knowing you have at least one thing in common.

Chartered singles cruises take the work out of finding other singles because you'll travel together in a group, often with a host to organize everyone. On larger ships, the charter will connect you with other group members through planned onboard meals, gatherings and activities. On smaller vessels, the tour company might charter the entire ship, so every passenger is single.

One word of caution here: It's easy to think that meeting someone on a cruise ship takes all the inherent danger out of hanging out with strangers. You're in a confined space surrounded by lots of other people. Sounds safe, right?

While cruising is, overall, incredibly safe, crime on board can happen. Like any form of travel, it's best not to let your guard down, especially if you go off alone with someone you've just met.

Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind when seeking other singles on cruise ships is to start with an appropriate cruise line for your age and lifestyle . Here are some great singles cruises for various age groups to help you get started.

Best cruises for singles over 20

cruises for under 30s

For young singles, cruising can sometimes feel like an expensive way to meet people. To avoid the high cost of single supplements charged to solo travelers in standard cabins meant for at least two people, single cruisers can travel with friends and share a room. (Many cabins can sleep up to four.) Also, you might feel more confident heading to the ship's bars or nightclubs in a group.

Try short three- to five-night cruises on low-cost mainstream lines like Carnival , Norwegian Cruise Line or Royal Caribbean , where you'll find more young adults and more of a party scene . Singles on a budget can also save money cruising on older, smaller ships across the mainstream fleets, which typically have lower cruise fares.

Margaritaville at Sea is another good choice for quick and affordable two-night trips to the Bahamas, though you'll need to find love quickly on such a short cruise.

Twentysomethings who have a larger travel budget and wish to cruise on their own can look for cruise lines with solo cabins. These rooms for one are in limited supply, so they can be priced at a premium and sell out quickly.

Related: The 6 best cruise lines for solo travelers

Our top pick for this age group would be a short Carnival cruise from almost any U.S. departure port.

The price is right, there's plenty of onboard fun designed for this age group (great live bands, nightly karaoke, poolside games, trivia and deck parties). It's also a good way to get your feet wet when it comes to cruising as a young single. Carnival ships have many cabins that can sleep several of your besties if you choose not to go alone.

Best cruises for singles over 30

cruises for under 30s

Cruising singles in their 30s have slightly different vacation needs from their younger peers. Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean and Carnival are all still great choices for this age group, whether you're traveling on your own or with a group of friends.

Another cruise line that works well for young singles is Virgin Voyages , which is child-free and has rooms and activities designed for singles. Its cheeky, nontraditional vibe is a plus for thirtysomethings.

Use the tattoo you got at the onboard tattoo studio as a conversation starter, make friends at an '80s-themed workout class, or chat up your neighbor at an after-hours cabaret or at a communal table in one of the line's many complimentary restaurants.

Single parents who vacation with their youngsters might want to add Disney Cruise Line to the list. The kids can enjoy amazing supervised programming in the expansive kids club while mom or dad enjoys adult pleasures like wine tastings, fine dining and dancing — all of which could lead to meetups with other single parents on board.

A warm-climate Royal Caribbean cruise with your best buds can be an ideal option for the over-30 set. We recommend one of the line's newest and biggest ships so you have plenty of options for food, entertainment and hangouts to try. From slides and water attractions that get your heart racing to dance clubs open until the wee hours of the night, these ships have plenty to offer young singles and plenty of places to meet new friends.

Best cruises for singles over 40

cruises for under 30s

Singles in their 40s generally are ready for a little less party and a little more romance on a singles cruise. This age group won't be out of place among festive singles on board Virgin Voyages or Carnival, but Celebrity Cruises is another cruise line to consider.

The line's newer Edge Class ships have a younger, hipper ambience than their older ships. Think martini bars, foodie havens and jazz clubs, all with decor that looks nothing like your parents' cruise ships.

Related: Best cruise ship bars

For those who like to gamble, try the mainstream cruise lines. The large casinos offer yet another opportunity to meet other singles on board — particularly at the table games. Margaritaville at Sea is another line to consider with plenty of gambling singles on board.

For fortysomething singles looking for onboard romance, we suggest a studio cabin for seven nights on NCL's new Norwegian Viva bound for the Caribbean . There's plenty to do on board and in port to help you meet people.

Additionally, the solo cabins, which have been redone in a more elegant style than on some of the line's older ships, provide access to the Studio Lounge for socializing. The lounge has also been revamped, giving it an upscale feel with free daily snacks and drinks. (Note that Norwegian's cabins for one sell out quickly, so you'll want to book early.)

Another great pick would be Virgin Voyages' four-night Fire and Sunset Soiree sailings from Miami on Scarlet Lady . They include stops at Key West and a private beach club on Bimini , plus a sea day to get to know your fellow passengers. The cost for a single "sailor," as Virgin calls them, starts at around $700.

Best cruises for singles over 50

cruises for under 30s

For senior singles cruises, all the previous options are still reasonable choices. However, some lines cater a bit more to this age group. The caveat is that cruise lines that cater to mature travelers are often targeted at couples, with solo travelers skewing older.

Oceania , Azamara and Holland America are tops on this list, especially on their shorter cruises that attract still-working professionals. The ships are large enough to have a mix of singles among the usual crowd of couples but small enough to provide a strong chance of actually meeting those other singles on board.

These lines offer port-intensive itineraries, so book ship tours to connect with like-minded folks on board since you likely won't spend as much time lounging around the pool.

For singles over 50, a Celebrity Cruises itinerary in the Mediterranean will likely include many other singles with whom you can mingle. Mediterranean cruises are popular with active mid-lifers looking to see more of the world. What could be more romantic than cruising the Greek Isles or the Italian coastline?

Best cruises for singles over 60

cruises for under 30s

Single retirees with the freedom to enjoy longer and often more expensive cruises have loads of options for meeting people. The list starts with premium lines like Holland America, Oceania and Cunard , but also Viking and Princess Cruises .

Single travelers in their 60s and older with a large travel budget should consider luxury cruise lines like Seabourn Cruise Line , Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises . All of these cater to singles with reduced supplement charges and singles meet-and-greets.

Visit the maitre d' on the first day of your cruise to ensure you are seated at the same table or group of tables with other singles for dinner in the main dining room. Dance classes, trivia games and port tours also put you in the right place at the right time to strike up conversations with others looking to make new connections. Social hostesses on luxury lines can introduce you to other solo travelers, too.

Related: Why it's easier to meet new people on a smaller cruise ship

River cruises in Europe are another possibility for singles in this age group. River cruises are inherently social, in part because of the small size of the ships, but also because daily tours put people with shared interests in proximity during walking and bus excursions. There are also choices of specialty theme cruises for LGBTQ+ cruisers , wine lovers, golfers and ancestry seekers, all of which make it easier for singles to meet people on board.

Lines to consider include AmaWaterways , Viking River Cruises, Avalon River Cruises, Emerald Cruises and Uniworld River Cruises. River cruises also sometimes offer reduced single supplements, making them more affordable for those traveling alone.

A top pick for this age group would be an Alaska sailing on Silversea Cruises. This luxury line includes everything in one fare — even many fabulous Alaska excursions you would pay hundreds of dollars for on any other line. The ships are small enough that you can easily meet your fellow travelers, and the excursions make it easy to share experiences with other singles on board.

Bottom line

The romance of a cruise is undeniable. From dressy dinners to the moon's glow on the ocean waves, cruising can feel like a setting straight from a Hollywood film. Though not as simple as swiping right, cruising to meet other singles has appeal.

Choosing the right cruise line and activities can help you narrow your potential candidates. Looking for an outdoor adventurer? Choose active tours in port. Want to share your love of music, wine or Blackjack with someone? Pick a theme cruise focused on your passion.

If you just want to dance the night away with singles in your own age group, there's a ship for you — whether your jam is rock 'n' roll, hip hop or a classic waltz.

Also, you lose nothing by trying. Even if you don't meet the partner of your dreams, you'll enjoy a fantastic cruise vacation.

Entertainment and socializing wise MSC Cruises offer a range of bars and clubs

Depending on where you book, you may find there are more non-English speaking Europeans onboard.

Otherwise, if booking a double occupancy room, you’ll have to pay a single supplement fee, but be sure to look out for good deals where this fee is significantly reduced to like 80% off.

MSC cruises offer great value for money.   The main reasons for this are that they allow more passengers onboard per cubic feet so you may notice the ships are a little busier than some of the alternative options for singles in their 20s

The older ships will be the cheapest, so check how long since it has been refurbed in case that’s a factor as they tend to leave a little longer than some other cruise lines.

The newer ships still offer relatively good value and are packed with features such as

  • Formula One Simulator
  • Splash Parks
  • Water Slides

And more (depending on the ship).

The bottom line, if a tight budget is a factor, MSC Cruises are well worth considering.

Best Time For Singles in 20s to Cruise

The best time of year for singles under 30 to take a cruise can depend on a few factors, such as preferred destinations and budget.

Cruising during the off-peak season can be a great way to save money on fares as well as being a time when there will more likely be other solo travelers onboard rather than parents with young kids.

If you’re a student or have a flexible work schedule, summer break can be an ideal time to take a cruise.

3, 4 or even 5-night cruises from Florida are much more likely to have a younger demographic on board, as well a more party atmosphere onboard.

Carnival Liberty/Oyster

Carnival Liberty/Oyster

Cruising is popular for travelers of all ages, as it has a similar experience to an all-inclusive resort -- dining, drinks, and entertainment are all generally included -- with the added benefit of sailing around to visit different locations. Some sailing destinations and cruise ships are geared toward party-minded young adults, while others are suited to vacationing families and retired folk. With that in mind, we've broken down where you should set sail in your 20s, 30s, 40s, and beyond. Read on and bon voyage!

Your 20s: The Caribbean

Paradise Island Beach, Bahamas/Oyster

Paradise Island Beach, Bahamas/Oyster

Whether you’re celebrating your 21st birthday, planning a pre-wedding trip, or simply want an escape from your first post-college job, a cruise to the Caribbean offers the ultimate party setting. The length of a Caribbean cruise can range from a weekend to one to two weeks (or longer), allowing cash-strapped young adults to afford a fun, warm-weather vacation with tasty rum punches in hand. Cruise lines like Carnival particularly appeal to 20-somethings with fun activities, entertainment all day and night, all-inclusive dining (and sometimes drinking), and plenty of spots to swim and sunbathe. Stick to a Bahamas cruise for short getaways, or ships hitting up lovely islands such as Antigua and St. Thomas for longer trips.

Our Cruise Pick: Four-Day Bahamas Itinerary on the Carnival Liberty

Your 30s: The Mediterranean

Venice/Oyster

Venice/Oyster

Your bank account is probably a little healthier in your 30s, so spending money on a longer cruise is a bit easier. A great option, then, is cruising the beautiful Mediterranean , stopping at raved-about cities. There are several routes and length options to choose from, but top port cities include Rome , Barcelona, Venice , Cannes, and Corfu. Party-minded travelers may want to ensure the lively Greek island of Mykonos is on their itinerary, while romancing couples may prefer to hit up the charming, cliffside town of Amalfi . If you weren’t able to study abroad in college and gallivant across Europe, now’s your chance to see some of the continent’s most well-known spots.

If you want to use summer vacation to travel with the kids, or are skipping Christmas with the in-laws to have your own adventure, the Galapagos Islands are the perfect bucket-list destination for your 40s. The islands became famous from Charles Darwin’s “On the Origin of Species, “ and are home to numerous endemic species that aren’t found anywhere else in the world. Additionally, a whopping 97 percent of Galapagos land area is considered a national park, and the sights of sea lions, sea turtles, and hardened lava flows will delight passengers of all ages.

So you’ve had your boisterous European trips and now are looking for something quieter. Enter: river cruises. Many of these cruises sail along the Danube or Rhine Rivers, on river boats that provide an elegant alternative to huge ships (think 95 staterooms versus over 2,000). Stopping at ports like historic Budapest , culture-packed Vienna , and the fortified city of Nuremberg, Germany , these river cruises sail to lesser-visited, but no less charming European cities. Passengers will get to see medieval towns, striking scenery, interesting museums, and ample cafes.

After years of touring other countries, Americans (and citizens of other countries) may discover in their 70s that they still have a lot of the United States left to see. One place that’s great for exploration by ship is Alaska , thanks to its glacier-filled landscape and abundant water-based wildlife. Alaskan cruises are especially popular with the 70-and-over crowd, given that the ships range from small luxury options to big-name vessels, and entertainment is often geared toward adults. Passengers can sit on their balcony while sailing, and sign up for excursions to salmon farms, dogsledding sights, whale watching points, and the Saxman Native Village featuring totem poles made by the indigenous Tlingit people.

Set Sail For Fun: Best Singles Cruises Under 30

I’ve always been an adventurous traveler, constantly seeking new experiences and making friends along the way. As a young, single person, cruising was never really on my radar – I always assumed it was just for families or older couples.

But as I began to research my travel options more extensively, I realized that there are actually numerous cruise lines that cater specifically to young singles like myself.

In this article, I’m excited to share my findings and recommendations for the best singles cruises under 30. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing vacation, a chance to meet new people, or an adventure-filled expedition, there’s a cruise out there that’s perfect for you.

So if you’re ready to set sail for fun and make memories that will last a lifetime, read on to discover the top cruise lines and tips for making the most of your solo travel experience.

  • There are many cruises for singles under 30, including organized group cruises and those specifically for romance.
  • Recommended cruise lines for young singles include Carnival, Virgin Voyages, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Hurtigruten, and MSC Cruises.
  • Different cruise lines offer unique features and experiences, such as nightlife, shared spaces, and solo traveler accommodations.
  • tips for traveling solo and choosing the right cruise line are provided, along with links to related posts and information on Cruise Tips.

Cruises for Young People

Oh great, just what I need – a singles cruise full of young people. Because nothing screams ‘fun’ like being trapped on a boat with a bunch of strangers who are all looking for love in all the wrong places.

But wait, before you dismiss the idea altogether, hear me out. There are actually some great options out there for young adults who want to set sail for adventure and meet new people.

First of all, consider the top destinations for singles cruises. Places like the Caribbean, Mexico, and the Mediterranean are popular choices, but don’t be afraid to think outside the box and consider destinations like Alaska or Hawaii.

Another important consideration is budget – some cruise lines, like Carnival and Norwegian, offer affordable options for young travelers. Just make sure to do your research and find a cruise that fits your budget and interests.

Trust me, a singles cruise can be a great way to explore new places and meet like-minded people.

Recommended Cruise Lines

I personally recommend checking out Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, and MSC Cruises for a fun and affordable solo travel experience. These cruise lines offer a range of amenities that cater to young singles, including singles mixers, LGBT meet-ups, and studio staterooms with no single supplement.

Carnival, Norwegian Cruise Line, and MSC Cruises are also relatively cheap compared to other cruise lines, making them ideal for those on a budget. When comparing pricing, it’s important to consider what’s included in the cost. Each cruise line offers different amenities, such as drinks, wifi, and tips.

Celebrity Cruises, for example, includes all of these in their pricing. MSC Cruises, on the other hand, offers huge promenades packed with clubs and bars, making it perfect for night owls who love a boogie. By doing your research and comparing pricing and amenities, you can find the best cruise line for your solo travel needs.

Activities on Board

One of the highlights of these recommended cruise lines is the variety of activities on board. For those who enjoy group activities, there are plenty of options such as dance classes, trivia nights, and game shows.

On Royal Caribbean’s Oasis- and Quantum-class ships, the nightlife options are endless with bars, clubs, and even a casino. Norwegian Cruise Line has exciting features such as the Vibe Beach Club and the SVEDKA Ice Bar, perfect for those looking for a lively atmosphere.

If you prefer a more laid-back vibe, Celebrity Cruises’ Edge Class ships have shared spaces such as the Martini Bars and the immersive Eden. MSC Cruises’ latest ships offer huge promenades packed with clubs and bars, perfect for night owls who love a boogie.

No matter what your style is, these cruise lines have something for everyone. So, set sail and get ready to have the time of your life!

Solo Traveler tips

Navigating a cruise as a solo traveler can be a thrilling adventure, so buckle up and get ready to learn some valuable tips. As someone who frequently travels alone, I’ve learned a thing or two about staying safe and making the most of my time on board. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your solo cruise experience:

Research the ship and its amenities before you go. This will give you a better idea of what to expect and what activities you can participate in. It also allows you to plan your itinerary in advance and ensure that you don’t miss any must-see sights or events.

Be open to meeting new people. One of the best things about cruising is the opportunity to connect with other travelers. Strike up a conversation with someone at a bar, join a group excursion, or participate in a shipboard activity. You never know who you might meet or what kind of adventure you might have.

Take safety precautions seriously. Always be aware of your surroundings and keep your valuables close at hand. Don’t wander off alone in unfamiliar ports or areas of the ship. And if you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, don’t hesitate to speak up and seek help from the ship’s staff.

Have fun! Above all, remember that you’re on vacation and should enjoy every moment of it. Try new things, take lots of photos, and make memories that will last a lifetime. Solo cruising can be a truly liberating experience, so embrace it and enjoy the ride.

Short Cruises for Solo Travelers

Researching short cruise options can be a great way to find the perfect solo travel experience. Short cruises are typically 3-5 nights and offer a taste of what it’s like to be on a cruise without committing to a longer trip.

As a solo traveler, short cruises can be a great way to dip your toes into cruising and meet other like-minded travelers. When it comes to short cruises, there are plenty of budget-friendly options available.

Some top destinations for short cruises include the Bahamas, Mexico, and the Caribbean. These destinations are not only affordable, but they also offer plenty of activities and excursions to keep solo travelers entertained.

Additionally, some cruise lines offer special rates for solo travelers on short cruises, making it even easier to travel alone without breaking the bank.

Types of Cruises for Different Travelers

As a solo traveler, I often wonder what type of cruise would best suit my travel style and interests. One thing I’ve learned is that there are many different types of cruises available to cater to different types of travelers.

For those seeking a romantic getaway, there are cruises specifically designed for couples with packages that include champagne, chocolates, and candlelight dinners under the stars. On the other hand, if adventure is more your style, there are adventure-focused cruises that offer activities such as rock climbing, snorkeling, and zip-lining.

No matter what your interests may be, there is a cruise out there for you. From luxury cruises with all the amenities to budget-friendly options with basic accommodations, there are plenty of choices to fit any budget. Some cruises even offer unique experiences such as themed cruises, where you can join a group of like-minded individuals for a shared experience, like a music festival at sea.

So whether you’re looking to relax, explore, or meet new people, set sail for the perfect cruise that fits your travel style and interests.

Luckily there are many cruises for specific age groups, and a singles cruise vacation is a great way to meet people with similar interests and see some new places.

According to a recent survey, 20% of all cruises are now taken by people between the ages of 20 and 39 – making it an ideal activity for young adults in their 20s and 30s! Let’s discover the Singles Cruises For Young Adults in their 30s and Under

Best Cruise Lines For Young Adults In Their Thirties

Norwegian Cruise Line is a popular choice for young adults looking for a single cruise. Many of their ships, for example, the Norwegian Bliss, offer a variety of studio staterooms explicitly designed for solo travelers, and their solo lounges are the perfect place to meet other singles.

Carnival Cruises also have plenty of bars and lounges, a comedy club, and live music venues for onboard entertainment.

Virgin Voyages is known for its pool parties, where you are bound to meet other solo travelers.

Other cruise lines offering studio cabins and many activities for the younger crowd are MSC Cruises and Celebrity Cruises (Celebrity Edge).

Best Singles Cruises Destinations

Whether you’re an experienced solo cruiser or setting off for the first time, plenty of destinations cater to single travelers. From sun-soaked Caribbean getaways to lively Mediterranean ports of call, the following are some of the best places for singles cruises.

A perennial favorite among young adults in Alaska. Cruise through snow-capped mountains and spot whales from your ship as you explore one of America’s last great frontiers. Enjoy hiking along glaciers and kayaking around fjords with like-minded travelers while making new friends.

Or take a break from the cold weather by heading south to the Bahamas or Mexico’s Riviera coastline. Cruising the Mexican Riviera is a great choice, with stops at popular ports such as the stunning resort town of Puerto Vallarta. The Dominican Republic is also famous, with young people loving the city of Puerto Plata for its great nightlife, shopping, and amazing beaches.

A singles cruise is also an excellent opportunity to explore Europe’s cultural capitals – Amsterdam, Barcelona, Rome, and more. All these cities offer up something unique for every traveler looking for adventure.

Lastly, those seeking a more exotic experience may opt for Southeast Asia, with stops in Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia. The region boasts stunning landscapes, bustling cities, and unique cultural experiences.

Daytime Activities On Singles Cruises

When young adults in their 30s are looking for a singles cruise, there is certainly no shortage of activities to enjoy. Cruise ships offer various entertainment options that cater specifically to single cruisers.

Water parks, hot tubs, dance lessons, and fitness classes are just a few ways to spend time and meet people. Cruise liners such as Carnival and Royal Caribbean have some of the best offerings for activities on singles cruises.

These companies provide everything from poolside games and sports tournaments to karaoke competitions and happy hours, with special discounts for single travelers.

Sunset Chasers Travel Agency can also help you find fun excursions throughout your journey at various ports of call. From snorkeling excursions and zip-lining tours to beach days and local sightseeing trips, you’re sure to find something you enjoy, regardless of your age or interests.

Whether you’re looking for an epic party atmosphere or more relaxed pursuits, singles cruising offers plenty to offer all types of young adults in their 20s and 30s.

a group of young people loving virgin voyages

Accommodation On Singles Cruises

Solo travelers on these voyages can book various accommodations that offer comfort and convenience. Suppose you’re lucky enough to get a solo cabin. In that case, you won’t have to worry about paying a single cabin supplement fee since all solo cabins are priced per person regardless of occupancy.

These cabins have various amenities such as complimentary Wi-Fi access, 24-hour room service, flat-screen TVs, private bathrooms, and much more.

Not all singles cruises have the option of your room, though. On singles-specific cruises, you may end up sharing a double occupancy stateroom. Most ships only have a small percentage of single occupancy cabins, and the double occupancy cabins still need to be filled for a single cruise.

Some people prefer sharing a room because it’s an excellent way to get to know at least one person well during your trip. Tour companies will try to match you with someone of a similar age and gender.

Dining Options On Singles Cruises

Cruises aimed at young singles in their 30s typically provide various dining options. The cruise line’s main restaurant is usually the centerpiece of the food scene, and it offers traditional dinner service with multiple courses.

In addition to this sit-down meal, there are often buffets for breakfast and lunch and casual snacks throughout the day. Some cruises may offer specialty restaurants that serve ethnic cuisines worldwide.

Singles cruises may have organized seating arrangements for meals or group events, while others may allow guests to choose seating arrangements.

If you are on a singles cruise and are on your own, you can ask to be seated at a large table with other single travelers looking to meet new people and make connections. This can be an excellent opportunity to socialize and make new friends while enjoying your cruise experience.

Evening   Entertainment On Singles Cruises

Whether you’re seeking a party atmosphere or more relaxed evening entertainment, there is something for everyone on a cruise ship. Ships often feature live music and dance parties, creating an environment perfect for young adults seeking to meet other single people.

From cocktail parties to bar crawls to live performances, there is plenty to do in the evenings. For a more low-key evening, you can take advantage of onboard games such as shuffleboard or miniature golf, watch movies on deck under the stars, or enjoy lectures from guest speakers about various topics related to your destination.

If you’re feeling lucky, there’s usually an onboard casino where you can try poker or blackjack. Whether you want to dance until dawn or play cards until sunrise, these vacations offer plenty of opportunities to have fun and network with other young adults in their 20s and 30s looking for companionship.

Shore Excursions On Singles Cruises

If you’re embarking on a singles cruise, there’s no need to worry about boredom or feeling left out of the action. Plenty of shore excursions cater to solo travelers, so you can explore new destinations and have fun with like-minded people.

From adrenaline-pumping activities like zip-lining and jet skiing to more relaxed pursuits like beach lounging and wine tasting, there’s something for every personality type. You could even sign up for a walking tour or a cooking class to learn more about the local culture and cuisine.

Tips For Solo Travelers On Singles Cruises

Going on a single cruise as a solo traveler can be an exciting and thrilling experience. However, being new to the cruise scene can be daunting. To help ease some of the nerves, here are a few tips to make the most out of your singles cruise.

Firstly, get involved in as many activities as possible, as this is the best way to meet fellow travelers and make new friends. Please take advantage of the organized group excursions and events; they will guarantee a good time and provide a safe and fun social environment.

Be open-minded and approachable. Being on a singles cruise means that everyone is in the same boat, so it’s easier to strike up a conversation with fellow passengers than talking to strangers in everyday daily life.

If you are nervous sailing alone, opt for sailing on one of the shorter cruises out of Florida. This will allow you to see if a single supplement solo cabin is for you and if you can handle a more extended solo cruise.

Finally, and most importantly, have fun! A singles cruise is an excellent opportunity to enjoy a holiday, make new friends, and find someone special!

12 Cruises Under $300 Per Person (Updated)

Looking for a dirt-cheap cruise? What about spending less than $300 per person on cruise fare taking you to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world?

cruises for under 30s

It may seem too good to be true, but it’s absolutely possible… as you’ll see below.

Before we get too far however, there’s a golden rule about cruise fares: Prices are cheapest when school is in session.

The reason is simple. When the kids are out of school — Spring Break, Christmas holidays, and summer — families have an easier time with being able to take time off to cruise. That leads to more demand for cabins. Just in general, even for those without kids, these are more popular times to vacation, and that means more demand.

When school is in session, however, it’s hard for families to find the time to set sail. As a result, cruise lines will lower prices to fill up rooms. That means you can find some great deals as you look for a trip in the early winter months or in the fall when school resumes.

(See:  10 Rules to Getting the Best Deal on a Cruise )

Below, we’ve rounded up a dozen of these deals, all with prices starting at below $300 per person for an interior room. As you see, most of them leave in the winter, with a few in the fall as classes resume.

We’ve included links to the deals themselves. Keep in mind that if the specific dates below don’t work for you, there are often similar cruises for similar prices around these times .

Note: The fares shown below are at the time of writing and subject to change. All fares are for interior cabins on a per person basis, before taxes and port fees.

3-Night Caribbean Cruise From Port Canaveral on Carnival

cruises for under 30s

Date: January 27, 2024 Ship: Carnival Liberty | Ports: Nassau Price: $136

When it comes to some of the absolute least-expensive cruises, then Carnival is a major player. The popular cruise line offers some great values. This includes this trip for just $136 per person for an interior room that departs Port Canaveral for three nights, heading over the Nassau. You’ll get to spend time in the Bahamian capital before having a day at sea to enjoy the ship and work on your tan. Learn more about this trip .

4-Night Mexico Cruise From Los Angeles on Carnival

Date: December 11, 2023 Ship: Carnival Radiance | Ports: Catalina, Ensenada Price: $181

Forget just a good deal, this cruise departing Long Beach is among the absolute cheapest in the entire country for a four-day cruise. For just $181 per person (and as low as $175 for some dates), you can set sail with port stops in Catalina and Ensenada. This specific trip departs December 11, and there are slightly other fares around this much available several times throughout the year. Learn more about this trip .

4-Night Caribbean Cruise From Miami on Carnival

Date: October 23, 2023 Ship: Carnival Conquest| Ports: Key West, Cozumel Price: $171

At just $171 per person, you can’t beat the price of the cruise setting sail from Miami — the cruise capital of the world. It makes two stops: Key West and Cozumel before returning to port. We found prices of $171 per person for in the fall of 2023, but you can also sail other times of year for about the same price. Best of all, it’s nearly $130 per person below the $300 per person threshold. Learn more about this trip .

5-Night Caribbean Cruise From Galveston on Carnival

Date: January 16, 2023 Ship: Carnival Breeze | Ports: Cozumel, Progreso Price: $251

If you’re one of the tens of millions that live within driving distance of Galveston, then it’s a great option for good deals. This five-night trip departs on January 16, sailing round trip with a stop in Cozumel and Progreso. Best of all, it’s just $251 per person for an interior cabin. Compare that to the same cruise departing on July 3 (the peak of summer travel) that costs a rate of $576 per person. Learn more about this trip .

Carnival Sunrise leaving Miami

Date: January 5, 2023 Ship: Carnival Sunrise | Ports: Half Moon Cay, Nassau Price: $156

This cruise aboard the Carnival Sunrise departs sunny Miami for Carnival’s private island Half Moon Cay in The Bahamas and Nassau. As well, you’ll get a day at sea to enjoy the things to do on the ship… or just work on your tan by the pool. For just $156, that’s a great deal. What we like best is that it departs on a Thursday and returns first thing Monday morning, meaning you only have to miss a couple of days work to set sail. Learn more about this trip .

5-Night Caribbean Cruise From New Orleans on Carnival

Date: January 23, 2023 Ship: Carnival Valor | Ports: Cozumel, Progreso Price: $206

This five-night sailing is pretty basic. It leaves New Orleans in October for a cruise that ports in both Cozumel and Progreso, Mexico. Still, it does get you to the Caribbean when the weather has turned cold in the United States… and it does it for a rock-bottom price. You can also tack on a day in New Orleans to have an even more fun vacation. Learn more about this trip .

5-Night Caribbean Cruise From Tampa on Carnival

Date: December 16, 2023 Ship: Carnival Paradise | Ports: Mahogany Bay, Cozumel Price: $211

Tampa isn’t as big a cruise port as other Florida ports like Miami and Fort Lauderdale, but don’t sell it short. This trip is a simple round trip getaway calling on Mahogany Bay (Honduras) and Cozumel. At just $211 per person, it’s cheaper than buying a flight to the Mexican Riviera and comes with a four-night vacation that includes meals and room. Learn more about this trip .

If you can’t sail in December, there are other dates available for low rates, including trips in January and September.

5-Night Caribbean Cruise From Galveston on Royal Caribbean

Date: January 10, 2023 Ship: Allure of the Seas | Ports: Cozumel Price: $289

Allure of the Seas in Cozumel

If you notice, all the cruises until now have been aboard Carnival, which offers some of the lowest-priced fares around. There are deals on other lines, however. This trip aboard Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas — the largest class of cruise ships on the planet — runs just $289 per person from Galveston.

The sailing has a day at sea, followed by a stop in Cozumel before another day at sea on the return to Texas. That gives you lots of time to hang out by the pool and enjoy the sunshine while working on your tan, without breaking the bank. Learn more about this trip .

4-Night Mexico Cruise From Los Angeles on Royal Caribbean

Date: January 30, 2023 Ship: Navigator of the Seas | Ports: Catalina, Ensenada Price: $180

Quietly, Los Angeles has become a hotspot for cheap cruises. Case in point — this cruise aboard Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas. It’s only $180, or less than $50 per person, per day.

With the cruise, you’ll depart LA with stops in Catalina and then Ensenada. And when it comes to things to do on the ship, it’s hard to beat Royal Caribbean. If you’re looking for an inexpensive and short getaway, it’s hard to beat this offering. Learn more about this trip .

Date: November 27, 2023 Ship: Carnival Paradise | Ports: Grand Cayman, Cozumel Price: $236

Five night trips under $300 are a gem to find, but Tampa offers a couple of options. This trip aboard the Carnival Paradise leaves Tampa, with stops in popular Grand Cayman and Cozumel. You’ll leave on November 27 but but you can sail on another date in October for a similar price. At $236, it represents a great deal for a five-night vacation. Learn more about this trip .

4-Night Caribbean Cruise From Miami on MSC

Date: March 13, 2023 Ship: MSC Divina | Ports: Nassau, Ocean Cay Price: $259

Want another option than Carnival for inexpensive cruises? MSC is a major player in Europe, but has a smaller presence in North America. It also offers some pretty good deals. This trip is only $259 per person, which isn’t the cheapest, but it leaves in the middle of Spring Break, which is normally an expensive time to sail. You’ll stop at Nassau and Ocean Cay before returning to Miami. Learn more about this trip .

5-Night Caribbean Cruise From Miami on Celebrity

Date: October 30, 2023 Ship: Celebrity Summit | Ports: Nassau, Cozumel Price: $211

Didn’t think you could afford an inexpensive cruise aboard a luxury line like Celebrity? Think again. This trip is surprisingly affordable for Celebrity, especially for a five-night cruise. The cruise will take you from Miami to Nassau and Cozumel for just $211 per person.

There are some slightly less expensive trips aboard the cruise line, but they are shorter in duration. You likely won’t find many cheaper trips for five nights aboard Celebrity. Learn more about this trip .

6-Night Caribbean Cruise From Galveston on Carnival

Date: February 19, 2023 Ship: Carnival Dream | Ports: Costa Maya, Belize City, Cozumel Price: $284

Texas has become a cruise mecca, second only to Florida. The Lone Star State is where we found this trip from Galveston that was under the $300 threshold. It’s a six-day cruise that departs February 2023 aboard the Carnival Dream. You’ll make stops in Costa Maya, Belize City, and Cozumel along with two sea days.

If you want to spend a little more, there are balcony cabins available on the cruise that are about $600 per person. Learn more about this trip .

5-Night Caribbean Cruise From New York on Norwegian

Date: February 1, 2023 Ship: Norwegian Getaway | Ports: Key West, Nassau (overnight), Ocean Cay (Overnight) Price: $279

The final cruise on our list is one that’s not sailing from Florida, Texas, or California, but instead, New York. With millions living within driving distance of the largest U.S. city, this trip is an affordable option for those that don’t want to fly to a port elsewhere.

Given the location, you are far from most traditional ports of call. In this case, despite being a five-day cruise, there is only one port of call — Bermuda. Even so, if you’re a Norwegian fan, this puts you on one of their larger ships at an affordable price.  Learn more about this trip .

10 Best Cruises for Singles of All Ages

Here are some of the best cruises for solo travelers at any age.

cruises for under 30s

Elizabeth Rhodes is a special projects editor at Travel + Leisure , covering everything from luxury hotels to theme parks to must-pack travel products. Originally from South Carolina, Elizabeth moved to New York City from London, where she started her career as a travel blogger and writer.

cruises for under 30s

Traveling the world without having to pack and unpack multiple times is ideal. And on a cruise, that's a reality as you head from destination to destination on what is basically a moving luxury hotel (or a floating city, in some cases ).

Being able to sleep in Bratislava and wake up in Budapest in five-star-worthy accommodations without having to drag all your stuff with you is as convenient as it is luxurious. But cruises aren't just for couples or families — they're great for singles as well.

Colleen McDaniel, the editor-in-chief of Cruise Critic , tells Travel + Leisure that cruises are a great place to meet new people. Some ships have single cabins, host parties for single passengers, or even waive the single supplement fee ( river cruises tend to do that most often).

For example, Norwegian Cruise Line offers studio cabins for single travelers that include access to an exclusive lounge with complimentary espresso and snacks. "One of the benefits of sailing as a single is cruises are generally social. That's how they're designed," McDaniel says. "If you're somebody who's comfortable traveling by themselves and looks to make friends on vacation, there's no shortage of people you're going to meet."

But while younger travelers might want to hop around Europe and party every night, someone in their 50s may be interested in a longer cruise with opportunities for cultural immersion. Whatever your travel style, here are the best cruises for singles of any age.

Cruises for Singles in Their 20s

Cruises that last three to five nights are great for singles in their 20s, in part because they're less expensive, McDaniel says. If you do end up having to pay for a single supplement, "it's a little bit less of a hit to your wallet."

New cruise line Virgin Voyages offers exciting journeys aboard their ultra-Instagrammable ship, Scarlet Lady . The four-night Fire and Sunset Soirees cruise from Miami is ideal for travelers in their 20s or 30s looking for a healthy mix of party and wellness. All cruisers must be fully vaccinated and test negative for COVID-19 upon boarding.

Another great option is a three-day cruise to the Bahamas from Miami on Norwegian Sky . The ship was refurbished in 2019 and offers 10 dining options, a full-service Starbucks, and a casino for late-night bonding around the blackjack table with your new shipmates. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required upon boarding for guests ages 12 and up.

Cruises for Singles in Their 30s

According to McDaniel, cruisers in their 30s are likely looking for a good mix of "bustling nightlife and engaging in classes, but they also really want to explore and experience culture." She says river cruises that offer things like silent discos and paint-and-wine classes appeal to this age group.

The eight-day Vienna Vibe cruise from U by Uniworld is a great option (note the cruise line is on hiatus until 2023). This cruise line was originally built to cater to millennials, and this itinerary includes excursions like a walking tour of Vienna and biking around Passau. On board, morning yoga classes and a rooftop ice bar ensure guests will always have something to do. A negative COVID-19 test may be required for unvaccinated passengers when entering foreign countries.

Other travelers might want to opt for a South American adventure with National Geographic. The 10-day Upper Amazon river cruise aboard the Delfin II offers a chance to spot diverse wildlife within this impressive ecosystem.

Cruises for Singles in Their 40s

Upscale, bigger cruises on ships from Princess, Holland America, and Celebrity will likely appeal to cruisers in their 40s, McDaniel says. These cruises tend to be a bit more expensive, but "appeal because they have some really great excursions and might go off the beaten path. They're destination-immersive experiences."

The seven-night Galapagos Southern Loop on Celebrity Xpedition is one fantastic option. The Galapagos Islands are a great destination for solo travelers and this cruise is a solid way to see them. Search for sea turtles, sea lions, and blue-footed boobies during the day, and spend the evening in the ship's hot tub or take in one of the nightly lectures by certified naturalists from the Galapagos National Park. All guests must be fully vaccinated and test negative for COVID-19 upon entry.

A seven-day Norwegian Fjords cruise aboard Princess Cruises' Sky Princess is an additional option for travelers hoping to explore another part of the world best seen from a ship.

Cruises for Singles in Their 50s

McDaniel says that a river cruise is a great option for someone in their 50s, with some lines waiving the single supplement fee and putting age restrictions on passengers (since you may not want little kids running around). Some companies, she notes, do a great job of hosting single mixers, which adds to the social experience. A cruise along the Danube or Rhine rivers is always a great choice, and there are several lines to choose from.

Sail along the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers on Viking's Grand European Tour , which starts in Amsterdam and ends in Budapest. Along the way, the ship stops in charming towns and major European capitals for a well-rounded trip through continental Europe.

The twelve-day Cities of Light cruise , also from Viking River Cruises, carries passengers between Paris and Prague with several stops in Germany along the way. On board, sip a glass of wine and enjoy the sight of the cities slipping by. For both Viking Cruises, guests must be fully vaccinated and test negative for COVID-19 upon boarding.

Cruises for Single Seniors

A world cruise is a great option for seniors, McDaniel says, as they tend to have more free time. These cruises visit multiple countries over a longer period of time, and after a while, the boat feels like home.

"One of the great things about being a senior is you tend to have a far more flexible schedule," she says. "You also likely have a bit more disposable income."

The 71-day Grand Africa Voyage from Holland America Line offers a round-trip journey from Fort Lauderdale, stopping in Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Greece, Jordan, Tanzania, Madagascar, South Africa, and more on its cruise around the African continent. All guests must be fully vaccinated and test negative for COVID-19 upon arrival.

Cunard's Centenary World Voyages is even longer, at 117 nights aboard the Queen Mary 2 . The cruise includes two transatlantic crossings and stops across Asia, South Africa, and Australia, departing and arriving in New York City. On a cruise this long, even the shiest solo traveler is bound to make a few friends. All guests ages 12 and up must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 14 days prior to travel.

Trip Overview

Welcome to the galápagos.

Arrive at Seymour Galapagos Airport and enter the world-famous Galapagos National Park.

Start your island experience observing the famous giant tortoise in its natural habitat.

After lunch in the highlands of Santa Cruz Island, you’ll head to Puerto Ayora where you'll have the option to visit the Charles Darwin Research Station to learn about conservation. You'll also have the option for a short hike and swim at Las Grietas, a crack in the volcanic islands that's hard to describe in words.

In the evening, walk to the piers and catch a glimpse of the famous Galapagos reef sharks.

Snorkel + Hike an uninhabited island

TToday, you’ll swim and hike to observe the local wildlife. Expect to see friendly sea lions, marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, and frigate birds on one of the archipelago’s uninhabited islands.

Following your snorkeling adventure, experience spectacular views as you hike through the island and learn about its history, flora, and fauna.

Back on the island of Santa Cruz, enjoy a peaceful walk through a beautiful lagoon called Las Ninfas or grab a drink with some of your new friends.

Tortuga Bay Beach + Isabela Island

Experience the stunning beach at Tortuga Bay, one of the most extensive white sand beaches in the Galapagos. Swim, rent a kayak, or just relax on the beach. You’ll be in the perfect place to spot marine iguanas, sharks, seabirds, sea turtles, and more!

In the afternoon, take a speedboat to Isabela, where you’ll base yourself for the next few days. This remarkable island is home to six intermittently active volcanoes.

Wrap up the day with a picturesque sunset over the water, and then enjoy fresh seafood on the beach.

Sierra Negra Volcano Hike

Enjoy a stunning, scenic ride through the many different landscapes of Isabela on your way to one of her most impressive natural wonders: the Sierra Negra Volcano.

Hike up one of the most active volcanoes of the archipelago and watch the terrain change from forest to dry volcanic soil as you make your way for a view of the second-largest crater in the world.

After the hike, you’ll decide what your afternoon looks like, with options to snorkel Concha de Perla, surf, bike to the Wall of Tears, or visit Poza de Flamingos.

Snorkel with Sharks

For your final morning in Isabela, hop over to Islote Las Tintoreras, a chain of small islands named after the white-tipped reef sharks who like to hang out there.

Cruise around the bay to look for the famous Galapagos penguin, blue-footed boobies, sea turtles, sea lions, and more. Visit the shark tunnel, where sharks can often be seen during the day.

Then, put on your mask and fins for a chance to see sea turtles, manta rays, marine iguanas, and sharks.

Head back to Santa Cruz Island by speedboat for the last night in Puerto Ayora and do some last-minute shopping or wildlife spotting before our final group dinner in the Galapagos.

Wake-up and enjoy an early morning stroll around Puerto Ayora, or just relax at your hotel before heading to Seymour airport.

"Signing up for my first Under30Experiences trip was one of the best decisions of my life. I saw incredibly beautiful countries (Nicaragua, Costa Rica, my 4th trip is to Peru and the Amazon in the fall!) and met inspiring people who have touched my life and shaped my heart. These trips challenged me to get out of my comfort zone and rethink my perspective of the world. They showed me different ways of life and landscapes. But most importantly they encouraged me to focus on what I want to discover and chase my next adventure. I've met lifelong friends who have added so much joy and happiness to my world. I encourage everyone I meet to go on a trip- you have nothing to lose and everything to gain." -Cara M.

"I just returned from my second trip with u30x, to Bali. My first trip being the starter Costa Rica trip. There are not enough ways for me to describe how amazing this company is. After my first trip I always told people, it wasn't about the location, but the experience that u30x gave me, and that still holds true on my second adventure (but Bali was amazing!). The guides are so down to earth and cool people to hang with, while simultaneously running an incredible travel group. You really feel like a local on these trips, and learn more about the culture and the people than I believe you would with any other trip. I have some of the best experiences of my life with u30x, and now a passion for travel. Also, their alumni community and groups are awesome too!" -Casey H.

Middle East latest: Israeli foreign ministry outlines 'initial price' Iran must pay for missile attacks - as Tehran warns of 'bigger' retaliation

Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said aircraft are still patrolling the skies. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden said the US military helped Israel "take down nearly all of the drones and missiles" fired by Iran.

Iran's attack last night makes Israel feel like it is at war with Tehran, President Isaac Herzog has told Sky News.

"There is an empire of evil in Tehran, which has its proxies, led all over the region and [with] all cells all over the world," he said.

"They're spending billions of dollars just in undermining stability in the region," he added.

He said proportionally, last night's attack would look like 3,500 drones and missiles fired if the attack was aimed at the UK.

"What would [the British government] do [in that scenario]?"

"We were attacked last night from four corners of the Middle East with proxies shooting at us, firing missiles and ballistic missiles, drones and cruise missiles.

"This is like a real war. I mean, this is a declaration of war," he said, before adding that Israel would exercise restraint.

Our Middle East correspondent Alistair Bunkall then asked the Israeli president whether he agreed with the comments of Western allies this morning - which called for calm to prevail.

"The last thing that Israel is seeking in this region since its creation is to go to war, we are seeking peace.

"We are peace-seekers," he answered, before adding that Hamas and Iranian proxies had made it almost impossible.

"Unfortunately, [it] all started on the 7 October when another proxy of Iran, Hamas, led an unbelievably brutal massacre against Israeli citizens and the rest is history.," he said, before calling on the world to put Israel's actions within this context.

"Naturally, we always listen to our partners... we are also always reviewing all our options and will take whatever it takes to protect and defend our people," he said.

Israel will think twice before striking Iranian targets after last night's drone and missile attack, an Iranian professor has said.

Professor Seyed Mohammad Marandi of the University of Tehran told Sky News that Iran's attack on Israel was not unprovoked, rather a direct response to Israel's strike on the Iranian embassy in Damascus at the start of this month.

"The Israeli regime bombed an Iranian embassy, murdering people," he said.

Israel has never claimed responsibility for the 1 April airstrike -  which killed Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps' overseas Quds Force, and six other officers - as they attended a meeting in the Damascus embassy compound.

"The reason why Iran has such a powerful missile and drone capability... is because Iran has to protect itself [against] these sort of aggressive actions [by Israel]," Professor Marandi said.

He said that the US would surely stop Israel from continuing hostilities with Iran, claiming that the IDF's performance in Gaza shows it is not capable of standing up to Iran.

"If they can't take the small Gaza Strip, that doesn't say much for the [Israeli] regime - Iran is the most important country in Western Asia... [so] if the Israeli regime chooses to continue this conflict, they will pay a heavy price.

"I think there are enough sane people in Washington who recognise that [Israel would lose a confrontation with Iran], so I don't think we'll have war."

Joe Biden has told Benjamin Netanyahu the US would not participate in any Israeli counterattack against Iran,  according to reports.

CNN and the Wall Street Journal cited senior US officials as saying Mr Biden told the Israeli prime minister a response was unnecessary.

The US will continue to help Israel defend itself, but does not want war with Iran, White House national security spokesperson John Kirby told ABC News.

"We don't seek escalated tensions in the region. We don't seek a wider conflict," he said.

The Syrian foreign ministry has called Iran's attack a "legitimate right to self-defence".

Yemen's Houthis movement also said it was a legitimate act in response to a suspected Israeli strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus on 1 April.

A Houthi spokesman added the group had been in direct confrontation with Israel since 7 October.

The Israeli minister for national security has said Israel must go "berserk" in response to Iran's attack.

Itamar Ben Gvir, an Israeli minister, said Israel "must not be wimpish".

"The concepts of containment and proportionality, these concepts became obsolete on 7 October.

"In order to establish deterrence in the Middle East, you must show them that you've gone berserk and completely lost it."

The first direct attack on Israel by Iran has shaken Israelis and left them fearful a bigger war is looming.

Iranian weapons and interceptors could be seen flashing over the sky at night.

"I think it was quite scary when in the middle of the night we started hearing booming and we didn't know what it was, I mean we knew what it was, we didn't know to what extent it would be," said Jerusalem resident Cecile Smulowitz.

"But thank God the Israeli army came through, and so far it's quiet and we hope it would continue that way."

Some Israelis said they did not want an escalation but with the stakes so high they were nervous.

"I really hope there won't be a big war, none of us in Israel wants a big war so I hope that's it, and I hope Iran would stop now," said Jeremy Smith, 60, a resident of Tzur Hadassah.

"I imagine Israel will respond because I mean, our whole country was covered in missiles and drones. So what can you do? But we have to stop it somehow."

Jerusalem resident Amy Friedlang Morgans, 71, said: "We don't want a war with Iran, somehow they can't accept Jewish people living here. This is our homeland, it's written in the Bible."

Some further Israeli reaction to last night's attacks by Iran, with war cabinet minister Benny Gantz promising a response.

Mr Gantz, himself a retired army general, said that Israel would exact a price from Iran in a manner and time "that's right for us".

"Yesterday, Iran launched an attack on Israel - and met the strength of the Israeli security system," he said in a statement - just ahead of an expected war cabinet meeting.

He described Iran as a "global problem" as well as a regional challenge.

"This event is not over - the strategic alliance and the regional cooperation system that we built and stood its significant test need to be strengthened precisely now," he added.

He said that Israel had proven itself "an anchor of military and technological power" and of security in the region.

"Faced with the threat of Iran - we will build a regional coalition and collect the price from Iran, in the way and at the time that suits us," he said.

Footage released by Iranian state TV reportedly shows missiles being launched from Iran.

Some of the more than 150 cruise and ballistic missiles are shown blasting into the sky, leaving smoke trails behind.

While a military base sustained light damage, only a "handful" of the more than 300 missiles and drones made it through Israel's air defences, according to the IDF.

The Israeli foreign ministry has outlined an "initial price" it says Iran must pay for its attack.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps must be recognised as a terrorist organisation, said spokesperson Lior Haiat.

"Painful sanctions" must also be imposed on Iran, including in the field of missiles, he added.

"Israel has the right to defend itself in the face of Iran's massive attack. Israel successfully defended itself against Iran's aggression and will continue to do so in the future," read a statement.

Iran's attack on Israel, its threats issued to the US and its supply of weapons to Russia "endangers world peace", said Mr Haiat.

"This is precisely why Iran must never obtain nuclear weapons," the statement said.

Israel's air defence system is one of the most effective in the world.

The system consists of a series of truck-towed mobile units placed strategically throughout the country.

When their radars detect a threat, the information is sent to a 'battle management centre' where military personnel analyse it, anticipating its path and impact point, and decide which missile launcher to use to intercept it.

Iran launches dozens of drones at Israel, one injured in attack: Recap

Editor's Note: This page is a summary of news on the Israel-Hamas war for Saturday, April 13. For the latest news on the conflict in the Middle East, view our story for Sunday, April 14 .

WASHINGTON — For the first time ever, Iran launched an attack Saturday against Israel directly from its territory.

Iran sent a wave of drones toward Israel, a U.S. official told USA TODAY Saturday, as the country ramped up preparations for an Iranian strike amid soaring Mideast tensions. The official was not authorized to speak publicly.

The Iranians had been observed preparing drones to attack Israel, according to a second U.S. official briefed on the intelligence but not authorized to speak publicly.

The attacks were retaliation for a suspected Israeli airstrike on Iran’s embassy in Damascus, Syria last of Apr. 1. that killed seven Revolutionary Guards officers including two senior commanders. The move by Iran marks the most recent escalation in an inflamed Middle East that has been building for half a year − ever since Hamas' Oct. 7 attack in Israel detonated a retaliatory war against the militant group in the Gaza Strip.

"Our defensive systems are deployed; we are ready for any scenario, both defensively and offensively," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in an address. "The State of Israel is strong."

Israel's military said fighter jets and navy vessels are "on a defense mission in Israeli airspace."

The attack is "likely to unfold over a number of hours," U.S. National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said. President Joe Biden is set to meet with his national security team at the White House on Saturday afternoon and is being updated on the situation, Watson said.

"President Biden has been clear: Our support for Israel’s security is ironclad. The United States will stand with the people of Israel and support their defense against these threats from Iran," Watson said in a statement.

After the founding of the state of Israel in 1948, the small Mideast country maintained relations with Iran − an outlier from other Muslim majority countries in the region. After Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution, the two nations turned into fierce rivals.

Developments:

∎ Iran said it will not hesitate to take further "defensive measures" to protect its interests against any military aggression, the Iranian foreign ministry said in a statement Sunday.

∎ Israel's national emergency service reported a 10-year-old boy in the Arad region had been injured. No casualties have been reported as a result of the attack.

∎ Biden returned to the White House to meet with national security advisers about events in the Mideast on Saturday afternoon, cutting short a weekend trip to Delaware, the White House said in a statement.

∎ Iraq and Jordan temporarily closed their airspace as Iran launched drones toward Israel Saturday. Jordan has helped Israel respond to the attack by shooting down dozens of Iranian drones, Reuters reported.

Israeli Ambassador to U.N. calls for emergency meeting of Security Council

Israel’s top diplomat to the U.N. called for the Security Council to meet immediately to condemn Iran’s attacks and to designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guards a terrorist organization.

In a letter released Saturday night , Israeli Ambassador Gilad Erdan wrote to U.N. Security Council President Vanessa Frazier said Iran’s drone and missile attacks at Israel was a “clear violation” of the U.N. Charter and international law, calling it a “severe and dangerous escalation.”

He pointed to Saturday’s attacks, as well as weapons transfers to Hamas, the Houthis and Hezbollah, among other Iranian-backed proxies, as evidence of violations that he said threaten international peace. He also cited Revolutionary Guards seizing a Portuguese civilian cargo ship earlier on Saturday.

“The time has come for the Security Council to take concrete action against the Iranian threat,” he said.

The 15-member Security Council includes the U.S. as a permanent member. Neither Israel nor Iran are current members.

IDF: Most Iranian missiles intercepted outside Israel’s borders, IDF base hit with ‘minor damage’

Israel said most missile launches from Iran were intercepted before crossing into Israel. On social media, Israel Defense Forces said its Aerial Defense Array and its “strategic allies” intercepted most launches before they hit Israeli territory. Still, IDF did identify “a small number of hits,” including at an IDF base in southern Israel. The base had minor damage to infrastructure, IDF said.

“Over the past few hours, many dozens of hostile aircraft, as well as dozens of cruise missiles, from Iran were identified approaching Israeli territory and intercepted,” IDF said. “Dozens of (Israeli Air Force) fighter jets are currently operating to intercept all aerial threats approaching Israeli territory.”

What is Israel’s Iron Dome?

The Iron Dome is Israel’s mobile missile defense system that is designed to find and shoot down short-range rockets fired at Israel. An all-weather system, the Iron Dome can also take down artillery and drones, and it can detect and engage rockets up to 40 miles away.

After becoming operational in 2011, it’s been upgraded over the years and has a high success rate. It’s part of Israel’s three-tiered air defense system that protects against short-range ballistic missiles, large-caliber rockets and cruise missiles, via David’s Sling, and also through Arrow-3, which provides defense against medium-range ballistic missiles.

Iran won’t hesitate to take more ‘defensive measures’ to protect ‘legitimate interests’

Iran’s foreign ministry said it would not hesitate to take further “defensive measures,” against any military aggression, Reuters reported.

“Iran, if necessary, will not hesitate to take further defensive measures to safeguard its legitimate interests against any military aggressions and unlawful use of force," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement, according to state TV.

Iran would do so, the statement reportedly said, while reaffirming its commitment to the principles of the U.N. Charter and international law.

U.N. secretary-general ‘deeply alarmed’ by region-wide escalation

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he strongly condemned Iran’s “large-scale attack” on Israel. In a statement, he called for an immediate stop to the fighting.

“I am deeply alarmed about the very real danger of a devastating region-wide escalation,” he said. “I urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint to avoid any action that could lead to major military confrontations on multiple fronts in the Middle East. I have repeatedly stressed that neither the region nor the world can afford another war.”

Trump praises Israel, attacks Biden's leadership during Pennsylvania rally

Former President Donald Trump paid tribute to Israel and blamed President Joe Biden for Iran's attack during a campaign rally Saturday night in Pennsylvania.

"God Bless the people of Israel," Trump said at the start of a rally at a fairground in Schnecksville ,  Pa., near Allentown.

Trump, who attacked Biden in a series of Truth Social posts earlier in the day, did not cite the president by name when discussing Israel, but did blame what he called weak U.S. leadership for the attack by Iran.

Echoing a Truth Social post earlier in the day, Trump said the attack "would not have happened" if "we were in office."

Biden says commitment to Israel’s security 'ironclad'

President Joe Biden said that he met with his national security team for an update on Iran’s attacks against Israel.

“Our commitment to Israel’s security against threats from Iran and its proxies is ironclad,” he said on  social media .

Sirens, booms across Israel as 10-year-old critically injured

Sirens sounded off across Israel amid Iranian drone attacks, according to Israel Defense Forces.

The IDF issued a flurry of alerts on Telegram for sirens sounding from southern Israel to northern Israel. This also included Jerusalem, the Negev and Dead Sea regions, among others.

Magen David Adom, Israel’s national emergency service, said there were no casualties reported, but a 10-year-old boy in the Bedouin area in the Arad region is in critical condition. On social media , MDA said first responders were treating the boy.

It was unclear whether he was injured by missile fragments or an interceptor, Times of Israel reported.

Earlier, MDA said sirens sounded across the country but there were no reports of casualties aside from calls of “stress symptoms” and people injured running for cover.

Trump attacks Biden over Iran attack; claims it wouldn't have happened under him

Former President Donald Trump reacted to the attack by referring to himself.

"ISRAEL IS UNDER ATTACK! This should never have been allowed to happen - This would NEVER have happened if I were President!" the presumptive Republican presidential candidate said in one of a string of Truth Social posts.

In other posts, Trump taunted Biden for not giving a live speech on the attack, and said the U.S. would always stand behind Israel.

Trump may address the situation during a campaign rally near Allentown, Pa.

Jordan shoots down dozens of Iranian drones to help Israel

Jordan shot down dozens of Iranian drones above northern and central Jordan en route to Israel, Reuters reported citing two security sources.

The news outlet reported Iran said it had been watching if Jordan made any moves seen as supporting Israel, warning that Jordan could be the next target, Reuters reported.

Iranian drone attack makes Israel attack on embassy ‘concluded,’ Iran U.N. mission says

Iran’s mission to the UN. said its drone attack against Israel marks the end of its response to Israel suspected bombing Iran's embassy in Syria in early April.

“The matter can be deemed concluded,” Iran’s mission said in a social media post Saturday evening. “However, should the Israeli regime make another mistake, Iran’s response will be considerably more severe. It is a conflict between Iran and the rogue Israeli regime, from which the U.S. MUST STAY AWAY!”

Lawmakers respond to Iran attack on Israel

Reactions from lawmakers were largely divided among partisan lines, with House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La, stating the "Biden Administration's undermining of Israel and appeasement of Iran have contributed to these terrible developments," and GOP Rep. Mike Crenshaw, R-Texas, arguing that "Biden signaled waning support for Israel. Now a potential war is erupting."

Other GOP lawmakers such as Sen. Roger Wicker, the top-ranking Republican on the Armed Services Committee, and Rep. Mike McCaul, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, called on the U.S. to stand with Israel.

“Our shared enemies, including Iran and their proxies, need to know our commitment is unwavering. We must join with Israel to ensure that Iran’s aggression is met with resolute action and resounding strength," Wicker, R-Miss., said.

Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada also said, "The United States stands firmly with Israel and its right to defend itself against attacks from Iran and its terrorist proxies."

The senator said she would keep working to get legislation passed that provides additional military aid to Israel.

"What is happening now in the Middle East is why the house should have voted for the Senate passed security bill that supports Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan in their fight for sovereignty and democratic principles," Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., said in a X post, calling the U.S. the "backbone of the free world."

Drones key to Iran and its militias against U.S., Israel, researchers say

Drones have been key to Iran and militant groups it supports to attack U.S. forces and allies, according to the Iran Primer, a consortium of scholars who study the country.

Iran first developed rudimentary drones during its war with Iraq in the 1980s, Iran Primer's article said Friday. Today, Iranian drones are used for combat as suicide drones that explode on impact, or by traveling long distances to launch munitions at targets. They are also used for surveillance to identify targets using photo and video.

Iran began sending drones to Hezbollah, the militant group it backs in Lebanon, in the 2000s. In 2006, Hezbollah used drones against Israel in its 34-day war. They’ve reportedly since been used against ISIS militants, as well as in attacks in Saudi oilfields and in Iraq against U.S. military and diplomatic targets. Since 2022, Iran has supplied Russia with drones starting to use against civilian and military targets in Ukraine. Iran’s use of drones has increased in Syria, Iraq and Jordan after the war began between Hamas and Israel. In January, an Iranian-made drone killed three American soldiers in Jordan , while Houthi militants, backed by Iran, used Iranian-designed drones to attack ships in the Red Sea .

While some Iranian drones are small, carrying as little as 7 pounds of explosives, others can have payloads of up to 1,240 pounds. Many are modeled on captured American drones, Iran Primer said.

Plans in place ahead of drones, defense not ‘hermetic,’ IDF says

Israel plans to cut GPS services in certain areas as part of its plan to counter Iran launching drones at the country, Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Daniel Hagari said in a briefing Saturday evening.

“The IDF and the Israeli Air Force are implementing the plan we prepared in advance,” Hagari said in remarks. “As part of the preparations, GPS services will not be available in certain areas - the disruption is deliberate and according to plan. If we detect additional threats with a shorter arrival time, we will update you immediately.”

Hagari reminded Israelis of Home Front Command , which helps prepare civilians for conflicts or disasters. With sirens activated, IDF said people must enter shelters and remain there for no less than 10 minutes, though he said it could be longer. He encouraged Israelis to act responsibly and calmly. The IDF remains cooperating with the U.S. and partners in the region to counter launches and intercept them, he added. Protection includes the Israeli Air Force and Navy personnel, as well as the Aerial Defense Array, which includes the Iron Dome Aerial Defense System.

The defense is not “hermetic,” he said, adding it’s crucial to follow the country's Home Front Command.

U.S. promises to support Israel in face of Iran attack

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke Saturday with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and “made clear that Israel could count on full U.S. support to defend Israel against any attacks by Iran and its regional proxies,” according to a readout of their call provided by Pentagon press secretary Air Force Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder.

National security adviser Jake Sullivan also affirmed the U.S.' "ironclad commitment to the security of Israel" in a call with his counterpart in Israel, Tzachi Hanegbi, Sullivan said Saturday.

Netanyahu said in an address he appreciates the U.S. and other allies' support.

How long until the Iranian drones reach Israel?

The dozens of drones that were launched could take hours to arrive, according to Israel's top-rated Channel 12 TV news. Retired general Amos Yadlin told the channel the drones were equipped with 20 kg of explosives. Israel's military said sirens will sound in any threatened areas. Iran has threatened to retaliate for an April 1 attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus that killed seven of its military commanders. Iran blames Israel for the attack, but Israel has not confirmed or denied involvement.

Iran readies missiles for potential attack, US official says

Iran has been observed preparing cruise missiles for use in a potential attack on Israel, according to a U.S. official briefed on the matter.

Meanwhile, national security officials remained focused Saturday on Iran’s next steps, a second official said. Both officials were not authorized to speak publicly.

Biden confirmed Friday that U.S. intelligence showed that an Iranian attack on Israel could happen soon. Iran has vowed revenge for the April 1 airstrike. Iran blames Israel for the airstrike; Israel has not publicly acknowledged its role in the attack.

Iran’s anticipated retaliation comes as tensions have spiked in the Middle East as Israel’s war against Hamas continues. The Pentagon has bolstered defenses for the tens of thousands of U.S. troops in the region in advance of the prospect of an imminent attack on Israel and Western interests.

Iranian forces seize ship with ties to Israel in Strait of Hormuz

Members of Iran's Revolutionary Guard seized an Israel-linked cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday.

Iranian state media reported that the MSC Aries ship, which carries a Portuguese flag, was taken into Iranian waters. The ship's operator, MSC, confirmed the seizure by Iran and said it was working with authorities to ensure its return and the safety of the crew.

The crew includes Indian, Filipino, Pakistani, Russian and Estonian, according to White House National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson. Watson said the seizing of a "civilian vessel without provocation is a blatant violation of international law" and an act of piracy.

"We strongly condemn the Iranian seizure of the Portuguese flagged, British-owned MSC AIRES in international waters," Watson said on X .

Ship incident comes amid Houthi attacks in Red Sea

The Iran-backed Houthi rebel group in Yemen has been attacking ships in the Red Sea for months, saying it aims for Israel-linked ships.

The ship seized on Saturday is owned by Gortal Shipping, an affiliate of Zodiac Maritime. Zodiac is partly owned by an Israeli businessman. Zodiac said in a statement that MSC leases the Aries and is responsible for its activities.

"Iran will bear consequences for choosing to escalate this situation any further," said Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, a spokesperson for Israel's military.

Hasan Alhasan, an analyst with the International Institute for Strategic Studies, told Reuters that if the seizure of the ship is in retaliation for the April 1 attack, it may indicate Iran's desire to save face without causing a wider escalation of the regional conflict. "Iran may be trying to play on fears that it could obstruct shipping through the strait, a passageway of greater significance to global oil and gas supplies than the Red Sea," Alhasan said.

Body found of missing Israeli teen

Israeli officials said the body of a 14-year-old boy who went missing near the Malachei Shalom outpost on Friday morning was found Saturday in the West Bank.

Binyamin Achimair's death was a "terrorist attack," the Israeli military said, while Netanyahu vowed the perpetrators would be found.

Israeli forces were searching "from the air and on the ground" Friday, while groups of Israeli settlers stormed a nearby Palestinian village and set fire to houses and cars overnight. One person was killed and several injured in the conflict, Palestinian officials said.

Israeli settlements in the West Bank are considered illegal under international law by most of the world, which Israel contests. The settlements house Israeli citizens in the occupied land.

Police in Seoul said Park was with two other women at a friend’s house when she was found collapsed and in cardiac arrest. She was taken to a hospital but died at 11:17 p.m. local time, about an hour after her arrival.

Police are investigating the exact cause of her death. She had no known health problems.

While the cause of death has not been determined, Park Bo-ram is one of several young Korean entertainment stars who have died in the last few years. The strict regimen of K-pop and other forms of entertainment places them under enormous and restrictive pressure.

Brooke Shields says she's glad Tom Cruise publicly criticized her antidepressant use — he accidentally brought awareness to under-discussed mental health struggles

  • In 2005, Tom Cruise criticized Brooke Shields' use of antidepressants for postpartum depression.
  • At the 2024 PHM HealthFront, Brooke Shields said his comments "backfired."
  • She said the controversy brought more mainstream awareness around postpartum and mental health.

Insider Today

In one of the most controversial moments of Tom Cruise's career , the actor criticized Brooke Shields for talking about her use of antidepressants to treat postpartum depression.

Almost 20 years later, Shields says Cruise accidentally raised awareness around the issue and drove people to fight for better treatment.

In 2005, Shields had just published her memoir "Down Came the Rain," in which she described taking Paxil, an SSRI, after the birth of her first daughter, Rowan . "I was deadened, and it terrified me because I wanted to have a baby so badly," Shields, 58, said on Wednesday at the 2024 PHM HealthFront, a two-day event for healthcare marketers and health media. "I went through IVF seven times, and so the journey was such a fraught one."

Cruise initially called Brooke Shields "irresponsible" for using antidepressants in a 2005 "Access Hollywood" interview . When he was asked to elaborate on these comments in a 2005 interview on "The Today Show," Cruise told Matt Lauer that "psychiatry is a pseudo-science" and that "drugs aren't the answer."

Promoting Scientology, Cruise opposed taking any "mind-altering antipsychotic drugs," as it goes against the religion .

Related stories

He slammed Shields for spreading "misinformation" and said "she doesn't understand the history of psychiatry" when it came to using medication.

Shields said Cruise's comments angered a lot of women

Looking back on the incident, Shields said that Cruise's comments ended up helping the cause.

"You gave women in particular — they were so angry — you gave them a reason to fight for something they didn't even know they wanted to fight for," Shields said at PHM, noting that women weren't just sticking up for her but also for themselves.

"So it actually, ironically, helped the platform because everybody was talking about it," Shields said. "It sort of backfired. Way to put it into pop culture."

Cruise later apologized to Shields

A year after his comments, Shields said, Cruise delivered a "heartfelt" apology to Shields at her house and even mailed her an annual Christmas cake for many years.

Nearly 20 years later, the conversations around postpartum and depression treatments have changed dramatically. Shields is far from the only celebrity to be open about her PPD , though she played a crucial role in advocating for more awareness around the condition.

In 2007, she testified in Congress for a bill that would require postpartum pre-screening for new mothers.

"I'm not an expert," Shields said at PHM. "I'm just a woman who's gone through that and wanted to help other women get the help that they deserve."
