10. Manjuyod Sandbar

No paradise in Negros Island tops the serene waters of Manjuyod Sandbar. Located in Bais City, the sandbar is often dubbed the “Maldives of the Philippines” and is widely regarded as the best destination when you want to engulf yourself in the beauty of glistening white sands that sparkle beautifully in the sunlight. As beautiful as the beach already is, you might even encounter the beauty of seeing dolphins happily bouncing in the waters on the 15-minute trip to reach the destination.

11. Apo Island

Resting off the coast of Dauin town, Apo Island is globally acclaimed for its rich marine biodiversity. However, it’s best to save up for the trip because a separate fee is required for their diving and snorkeling services. Additionally, the minimum payment for a boat rental is 3,500 PHP (~62.71 USD). 12. Mount Talinis

A separate fee of 1,500 PHP (~26.87 USD) must be paid to acquire a hiking guide should you plan on hiking during the day. Otherwise, a fee of 1,000 PHP (~17.92 USD)  must be paid should you need a guide for a night hike.

The best time to visit Dumaguete is in the hot and dry months between February and June.

Although, I visited Dumaguete in the low season in October and was welcomed with fantastic weather throughout my stay.

HOW LONG TO STAY IN DUMAGUETE?

I recommend staying at least 3 full days to visit all the best attractions in Dumaguete and take a day tour to Apo Island or Siquijor.

WHAT IS DUMAGUETE KNOWN FOR?

Dumaguete is the capital of the province of Negros Oriental. The city is known for its gentle people, hence the nickname “The City of Gentle People”.

Dumaguete is famous for a number of attractions, including Pulangbato Falls, the Twin Lakes of Balinsasayao, and Rizal Boulevard.

Also, as you’ll discover in this guide, Dumaguete is known for its nearby islands Apo Island and Siquijor, which are definitely worth visiting. Read until the end to learn more.

RIZAL BOULEVARD

Rizal Boulevard is one of the best Dumaguete tourist spots and it’s sure to be added to your itinerary when visiting Negros Oriental.

Rizal Boulevard is a buzzing waterfront strip that is lined with bars, restaurants, and street vendors during all hours of the day.

There are also several festivals throughout the year where Rizal Boulevard plays host to parades, live music, and outdoor barbeques for everyone to enjoy.

Rizal Boulevard faces east over the Philippines Sea, and it is the best spot in Dumaguete to catch the sunrise from one of the bench seats, all the while watching local boats zipping in and out of the Dumaguete Port.

At dusk, Rizal Boulevard comes to life with the brightly lit street lamps shimmering on the waterfront and the cool sea breeze that fills the air, a tranquil end to a busy day exploring Dumaguete City.

While here, you can have a coffee at Bo’s Coffee, right in front and that serves dishes for lunch and other drinks.

CAMPANARIO DE DUMAGUETE

Campanario De Dumaguete is an iconic landmark right in the center of town.

Built in 1811, this belfry tower was put in place to warn the local residents of Dumaguete of the impending danger of Moyo pirate attacks.

Campanario De Dumaguete is a two-tiered watchtower located right next to the Cathedral of St. Catherine of Alexandria.

On one side of the watchtower, there is a grotto where locals and devotees offer prayers to Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

At the entrance to the grotto are a few small street vendors selling candles and other religious souvenirs.

It was built hundreds of years ago in 1776 and every Sunday, the Dumaguete Cathedral hosts masses for local Filipinos and other religious tourists.

Upon entrance to the St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral, you can see four large stone pillars holding up the entrance gate which is also surrounded by lush green palm trees and frangipani gardens.

The best time to visit the St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral is on a Sunday from 10 am onwards to experience all the action.

SILLIMAN UNIVERSITY

Silliman University is the first American University in the Philippines and the entire Asian continent. Silliman University was founded in 1901 and it is mainly used for private research.

The most aesthetically pleasing point of interest at Silliman University is the symmetrical tree line that surrounds a field of well-kept turf in front of the main campus entrance.

The Silliman University is also home to the anthropology museum showcasing artifacts of ancient Filipino culture.

The museum is open Monday to Friday and there is a small entrance fee for outside visitors.

EAT A SILVANA FROM SANS RIVAL CAKES & PASTRIES

If you haven’t tasted a Silvana from Sans Rival then you are missing out, as it’s one of the best Dumaguete City tourist spots to eat.

A global craze for this buttery sweet treat has people traveling to the flagship store in Dumaguete just to get their hands on some.

Sans Rival is widely known for its creamy, mouth-drooling Silvana.

Silvana’s consist of egg whites, cream of tartar, ground cashews, butter, milk, and cake crumbs.

Silvana’s are available in original butter or chocolate for 26 Pesos per piece or you can buy a dozen for 312 Pesos.

BEST DAY TOUR FROM DUMAGUETE

It includes transportation and the boat ride, lunch, snorkeling gear, and a fun guide to spend the day with!

BALINSASAYAO TWIN LAKES 

One of the best Dumaguete tourist spots is Balinsasayao Twin Lakes Natural Park .

The twin crater lakes known as Balinsasayo and Danao are the prominent features of the national park located on the western side of Mount Guintabon.

The twin lakes national park is located 14.5 km west of Dumaguete in a small village known as Sibulan.

It’s open Monday to Sunday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and the entry fee is 50 Pesos for local Filipinos and 100 Pesos for tourists. Also, there’s a 20 pesos fee for each motorbike and parking fee.

The best way to get to Balinsasayao Twin Lakes is to join a day tour with an experienced guide that will show you around the best spots.

Alternatively, you can rent a motorbike in Dumaguete for 500 – 800 Pesos per day or rent a car for 1500 – 2000 Pesos per day. The journey time takes around 1 hour.

The twin lakes of Balinsasayao and Danao formed from a volcanic eruption some 10,000 years ago, and the 90-meter deep craters over time have filled up with water from rain and stream deposits, resulting in the two lakes, separated by a narrow mountain ridge.

Hundreds of species of forest trees, fruit-bearing, and flower plants dominate the vegetation around the lakes. On top of this, Twin Lakes is a famed spot for bird-watching enthusiasts, playing home to many different species of bird, the most popular being the Flaming Sunbird.

Across the lake, you can also visit the Olayan Waterfall and rock pools which were the highlight of my adventure to Balinsasayao Twin Lakes National Park.

APO ISLAND SNORKELING TOUR

Apo Island is a volcanic island located 30km off the coast of Dumaguete, and is an excellent answer to what to do in Dumaguete.

Apo Island is the longest-lasting community-led marine protected area in the Philippines since 1986.

I highly recommend adding Apo Island to your Dumaguete itinerary to experience an entire day of snorkeling with sea turtles, reef fish, sea snakes, and hundreds of colorful corals. There are a few small mountain peaks on Apo Island that you can hike also.

There are two options for getting over to Apo Island for a snorkeling trip:

Option 1: Ultimate Package

Atlantis Dive Resort in Dauin, just 20 minutes south of Dumaguete City, offers the ultimate package for scuba diving and snorkeling tours every day of the week to Apo Island.

The tour kicks off after a complimentary breakfast at the Atlantis Resort before jumping on the boat at 8 am for the 45-minute journey over to Apo Island.

There are 3 stops throughout the day to different dive and snorkel sites around Apo Island.

A barbeque lunch is also included on the boat and the tour ends back at Atlantis Resort around 4:00 pm.

• Cost for snorkeling: 4095 Pesos / includes a tour guide, boat transfers, mask, snorkel and fins hire, barbeque lunch, and marine park fees.
• Cost for diving if certified: 2300 Pesos per dive / includes dive instructor, dive equipment, barbeque lunch, and marine park fees.

Alternatively, you can book a tour online , which is the most convenient way to visit as everything is included.

Option 2: Budget Package

If you are staying in Dumaguete, the cheapest option to get to Apo Island is to take a 1-hour jeepney ride from Dumaguete to Malatapay and from here you can take a motorized outrigger boat over to Apo Island which is a 30-minute journey.

• Cost for bus from Dumaguete terminal to Malatapy:  110 Pesos return ticket p/person

• Cost for marine park entrance and snorkeling fees:  150 Pesos p/person

TAKE A TRIP TO SIQUIJOR ISLAND

If you’re looking for an exciting day trip to add to your Dumaguete itinerary, look no further than Siquijor Island , one of the best Dumaguete attractions.

Siquijor is just a short ferry ride away from Dumaguete and offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and a hint of mysticism.

There are 2 ways to visit Siquijor, and I’ll go through the details of each below:

• Join a tour and visit the island with a guide
• Take the ferry from Dumaguete and visit on your own

OPTION 1 – JOIN A TOUR TO SIQUIJOR

Joining a trip to Siquijor from Dumaguete is the best option to visit as everything will be organized for you, from the accommodation to the meals and everything in between.

You’ll start the trip at Dumaguete pier and head over to Siquijor by ferry. From there, you’ll spend 3 days discovering the island, from the waterfalls in Siquijor to Paliton Beach and The Century Old Balete Tree.

This particular tour guarantees 8 to 10 spots, which seems very reasonable and that leaves you enough time to chill as well, which I appreciate.

On top of that, your tour guide will take you to the marine sanctuary where you can snorkel and see the underwater life, and that’s definitely a good reason to come to Siquijor!

OPTION 2 – TAKE THE FERRY AND EXPLORE SIQUIJOR

Start your adventure by hopping on a morning ferry – it’s about a 1.5-hour journey, and once you arrive, you can rent a motorbike or hire a tricycle tour to explore the island at your own pace.

I recommend booking online as ferries to Siquijor often sell out.

One of the must-visit spots is the century-old Balete Tree, believed by locals to be enchanted. Dip your feet into the fish spa at its base for a unique experience!

Next, head to the Cambugahay Falls . With its multi-tiered cascading water and inviting turquoise pools, it’s perfect for a refreshing swim.

The island is also home to beautiful white sandy beaches like Paliton Beach , where you can see the sunset and have a drink in the evening after exploring the island.

For lunch, stop by a local eatery and try some traditional Filipino food.

Siquijor is known for its love potions and herbal medicines, so if you’re feeling adventurous, visit a local healer and learn about the island’s age-old traditions.

These are other things you can do in Siquijor:

CATA-AL WORLD WAR 2 MUSEUM

Next on our list of Dumaguete places to visitis the World War 2 Museum in Valencia.

The museum is about 4.5 miles from Dumaguete City and is a treasure trove of historical artifacts.

While there are many war museums around the world, this one if particularly interesting, given the history of the Philippines with Japan, the United States, and Spain.

The museum was started by Porferio Cata-al Sr., an 86-year-old survivor of the battle, and it boasts a massive collection of World War II antiques.

You’ll find everything from heavy artillery and ammunition to grenades and bomb remnants from American and Japanese fleets scattered around the museum.

There’s also a jeep where you can sit and take a photo for the memories.

This museum is not just a collection of artifacts, but also a testament to the resilience and courage of those who lived through the war.

The museum is rather small and you’ll spend around 30 minutes here. It’s open daily from 8.00am to 5.00pm and the entrance is free (donations to keep the museum open are welcome though).

Sometimes referred to as “The Maldives of the Philippines” by travel influencers, the Manjuyod Sandbar is one of the fun Dumaguete tourist attractions located just 1.5 hour away.

This strip of pristine white sand, which can stretch over six kilometers at low tide, is nestled in the Bais Bay along the Tañon Strait.

The sandbar is about 15 minutes by boat from the coast. Once there, you’ll find a few cottages in the middle of the ocean, offering a unique opportunity to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

One of the most popular activities at the sandbar is dolphin watching and snorkeling.

The best way to visit is taking a tour that combines a trip to the sandbar with those 2 activities, and I’m confident to say that you won’t regret it!

Before planning your visit, make sure to check the tide forecast. The beauty of the sandbar is best appreciated during low tide when the sand is exposed.

It’s also advisable to start your tour early in the morning to make the most of your day. That’s right, these tours start at 6 in the morning, so get prepared for that!

Though it might not offer the luxury of Maldivian beaches , the Manjuyod Sandbar has its unique charm that’s hard to resist.

PULANGBATO FALLS

Another of the fun tourist spots near Dumaguete, specifically in Valencia, is Pulangbato Falls, nestled in the countryside about 30 minutes from Dumaguete City.

Located at the Red River Valley, Pulangbato Falls, also known as Red Rock Falls, are approximately 30-feet high with a deep and sloping catch basin to take a dip.

Also, there’s a small, local cafe nearby where you can have a coffee, a sandwich, or instant noodles, among other drinks and dishes.

Getting to the falls from Dumaguete City is fairly straightforward. You can take a Jeepney in Dumaguete to Valencia and then hire a habal-habal to get here.

Alternatively, you can rent a motorbike in Dumaguete or join a tour to Valencia , which also includes Pulangbato Falls.

If you prefer to stay nearby, which is a good option to relax in style, there’s Pulangbato Falls Mountain Resort , which provides accommodation with a natural outdoor swimming pool.

This is a great option to get here too, since they can organize a shuttle from Dumaguete or Valencia for you.

The entrance fee to the waterfalls is 100 pesos, but that is included when you stay at the resort.

SEE THE SULFUR MOUNTAIN

On the way from Dumaguete to Pulangbato Falls is the Sulfur Mountain, which is a cool place to see and take a photo of.

Also known as the Sulfur Vents, the area is characterized by its yellow-colored rocks and soil, the result of sulfur deposits.

The heat from the geothermal activity makes the place quite hot and you’ll see steam rising from the ground, creating a cool environment. The river running through the mountain is also tinged with sulfur, adding to the distinctive landscape.

A word of caution: The sulfur coming from the mountain is pretty smelly, similar to rotten eggs, so that’s a good place for photos but you’ll definitely not spend a long time here.

CASARORO FALLS

For nature lovers, a tourist spot in Dumaguete you can’t miss is the stunning Casaroro Falls.

Located in the mountain region of Valencia, this single-drop waterfall is less than a 30-minute drive from Dumaguete City, which is convenient.

Once you arrive, be prepared for a bit of a trek. The path to the falls includes around 300 steps, which can be quite challenging but are well worth the effort.

At the end, you’ll be greeted by the powerful 100ft waterfall cascading into a cool, refreshing pool.

While the pool is narrow, it’s definitely a great spot to relax for a while, and I recommend coming in the morning to avoid the tourist crowds or in the afternoon to cool down after exploring.

The entrance fee is 100 pesos, which includes a guide to take you to the waterfall, and that is mandatory. Also, there’s a parking lot where you can leave your scooter or car while you visit.

All in all, it’s one of the best places to visit in Dumaguete, and the entrance fee worth every penny!

TIERRA ALTA RESIDENTIAL RESORT

Last but not least on this selection of best tourist spots in Dumaguete is Tierra Alta, a resort where you can take photos, relax at the on-site cafe, and see the landscape from above.

Just 7.9 km west of Dumaguete and perched on the mountains of Palinpinon, this resort offers a picture-perfect view of the sea and the lush vegetation of Negros Oriental.

The resort is known for its Greek-inspired clubhouse and pavilion, which is a cool experience for a couple of hours.

There’s also a lighthouse which you can get on top and take more photos and selfies, how cool!

You can also spend the night here and use their swimming pool, but that’s not as authentic and relaxing as the Pulangbato Falls Mountain Resort we discussed above.

Still, it’s a nice Dumaguete tourist spot I recommend visiting!

The entrance fee is 70 pesos per person and I recommend coming during the day to take beautiful shots!

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Dumaguete is located on the southeast tip of Negros Island, which is the 4th largest island in the Philippines. The population of Dumaguete is 130,000.

It’s commonly known as the ‘City of Gentle People’ and you will quickly realize why when you interact and experience the kind-hearted souls of the people of Dumaguete.

The English language is spoken throughout Dumaguete, so you shouldn’t have any trouble conversing with the locals if you are in need of some directions or something of the like.

Dumaguete Airport is located 20 minutes away from the city center.

Taxis and jeepneys are readily available for transportation to and from Dumaguete City and the airport.

• Twin Lakes Danao and Balinsasayao - located in the Mount Talinis range, this is an 8,000 hectares protected area lying within the municipalities of Valencia, San Jose and Sibulan in Negros Oriental.

After visiting the famous Pulangbato Falls, I suggest that you also head out and explore another precious gem of Dumaguete which is no other than the stunning Casaroro Falls. But hey, let me just warn you that reaching this spectacular wonder will require much harder hiking and trekking experience, so be ready!

Nevertheless, all your hardships will be more than worth it once you see this hidden paradise. With a jaw-dropping height of 100 feet and incredible boulders of rock formations surrounding the area. Before you reach the bottom of Casaroro Falls, you first have to trek down the 350-step concrete staircase which I must say is quite the challenge. And even though you’re far away, you’ll already hear the thunderous roar of the cascading waters of Casaroro Falls which makes it much more amazing!

Well, once you reach the natural pools of water formed by Casaroro Falls, feel free to enjoy the fruit of your labors and reward yourself by swimming around all day and relaxing! Nothing beats the feeling of seeing a breathtaking creation of God with your own two eyes.

4. Apo Island

When you visit Dumaguete City, it’s highly recommended that you allot some time to venture and explore the famous Apo Island, which is about 30 kilometers off the capital city Dumaguete. This huge volcanic island covering an astounding area of 70 hectares is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful island destinations in the Philippines .

The pristine beaches, the crystal clear waters, and the colorful corals of Apo Island became known worldwide as a premier diving destination being visited by international tourists. The island is a marine protected area so expect it to be clean and well-maintained. Oh, and if you’re wondering, the island got its name “Apo” from the Visayan language which means “elder” or “respected ancestor”.

And there it is. One of Dumaguete’s pride and iconic landmarks is Siliman University. Established since the year 1901 and known for being one of the Philippines’ most prestigious educational institutions, Siliman University is home to more than 10,000 brilliant students including those with international relations.

7. Campanario de Dumaguete

Next up, Campanario de Dumaguete is probably the most significant historical landmark in the province which has long been protecting the city of Dumaguete since the 18th century. It was originally built as a watchtower by the Spanish priest Jose Manuel Fernandez de Septien in 1760 along with three others to protect the city from invaders.

Today, Campanario de Dumaguete remains to fulfill its duty and at the same time allows people to briefly go back in time and appreciate Dumaguete City’s colorful history. It wasn’t until 1867 that a bell tower was added on top of the watchtower which is now locally known as the “Campanario”.

8. St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral

Just beside the Campanario de Dumaguete is yet another prominent landmark worth visiting in the island province. St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral or more popularly known as the Dumaguete Cathedral serves as the city’s center of culture and religion.

The church features a Baroque style that easily captures the eyes of visitors with its nostalgic design. What stands out from the facade are the four major pillars where the statues of Saint Matthew, Saint Mark, Saint Luke, and Saint John are all erected. 9. Mount Talinis

Mount Talinis, is a majestic mountain that stands tall at about 1,903 meters above sea level. This is the second-highest mountain on the Negros Island which is only behind the mighty Mount Kanlaon . Mount Talinis was actually categorized by PHIVOLCS as a potentially active volcano although there were no recorded eruptions in the past.

As you may have noticed, Dumaguete City pays huge respect to our country’s history by commemorating the national heroes and important events that gave us the freedom we currently enjoy. So I must say that the best way to end our Dumaguete escapade is by visiting the Cata-al World War II Museum.

World War II heavily affected Negros Oriental’s history and this museum perfectly showcases everything that happened. War weapons of the Japanese and artifacts from the bloody war such as knives, guns, cannons, and ammunition are beautifully displayed here at the Cata-al World War II Museum.

This famous museum was built thanks to Porforio Cata-al and Felix Cata-al, a father and son tandem, who tirelessly dug and hunted for historical artifacts and treasures in the area bounded by Mt. Talinis. It is said that the mountain served as the Japanese military’s last holdout in Negros Oriental during the war.

Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Philippines during the dry season .  Dry season in the Philippines spans from November through April .  These are the summer months in this country.

Be aware that temperatures and humidity levels are particularly high in April and May .

The best time to be a beach bum and explore the islands is from March to May.

TIP:  Booking for summer trips should be done as early as possible, at least a month before your travel dates, since resorts get fully booked early.

The period from June to October is the rainy (wet) season and is best avoided due to the high possibility of typhoons. The typhoons can not only be destructive, but most tours and activities are cancelled under such circumstances.  Transportation via plane and boat is also seriously impacted as well.  This happens frequently so beware!

There are many ways to get to this destination depending on your starting point.  This guide recommends using the following online tools to identify all the available options and cost for each while in Dumaguete City: Rome2Rio and PHBUS .  The major ports of entry for this destination are provided below.

The easiest way to get to Dumaguete is by air. Cebu Pacific, and Philippine Airlines offer daily flights to and from Manila and Cebu.

Dumaguete is served by Dumaguete-Sibulan Airport which is located in the town of Sibulan less than 5 kilometers from the heart of the city. The airport can be accessed by tricycle, taxi, and multicab. Chartered tricycle (which can seat 3 to 4 persons) usually costs between P100 to P300 for a one way trip. Alternatively, you can also hail a multicab outside the airport to take you to Dumaguete City. Fare is around P20 per person.

Find Flights to Dumaguete

A 2Go ferry sails from Manila direct to Dumaguete every Monday and Dumaguete to Manila every Wednesday. Travel time for Manila-Dumaguete is around 29 hours while for Dumaguete-Manila is more than 50 hours. The ferry probably has a stopover somewhere. The fare ranges from P2,400 to P7,000 depending on the type of accommodation and date of booking.

There are also ferries sailing from Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor, and Dapitan.

People coming from any town in Negros Island can get to Dumaguete City via bus. Travel time from Bacolod City to Dumaguete is around 6 hours with quick stopovers for lunch and toilet.

The following are popular places to see and activities to enjoy while in Dumaguete City.

1 | Chinese Bell Church

Located just over the Southern tip of Rizal Boulevard lies the Chinese Bell Church, an old Chinese temple designed with dragons and Chinese writings.  It is a traditional Taoist Temple with bells on its towers.  While some believe this place of worship is not worth visiting especially if you do not share the same faith, the Chinese Temple and Bell Church offers a peaceful haven for anyone who is in need of it.  The church is available to visitors and is open from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

2 | Dumaguete Cathedral and Belfry

Also known as St. Catherine Alexandria Cathedral, this centuries-old place of worship is still flocked by devotees to hear mass even up to this day.  This oldest stone church in Negros is brilliantly designed so as it is able to withstand the test of time, pleasing to the eye, and comforting to the heart.  The nearby belfry used to be a watchtower for impending attacks back in the day but is now being used as it is, to remind the devotees that a holy mass is about to begin.

3 | Ninoy Aquino Memorial Freedom Park

Ninoy Aquino Memorial Freedom Park is not just an ordinary park where families can bond or children can play on the wide green lawn.  It also houses the Negros Oriental Provincial Capitol.  Big events and festivals such as the Buglasan Festival are held in this spot where participants and audience get to enjoy the dance competitions, live music, and other activities.

4 | Quezon Park

The park is hard to miss as it is conveniently located across Dumaguete Cathedral.  It’s a good place to spend time and relax with family and friends as it is spacious and surrounded by trees, bushes, and flowers.  Decorated with vintage cannons, the park has a playground for kids and kids at heart, too.

5 | Rizal Boulevard

Enjoy the best of both worlds at Rizal Boulevard.  On one side, you can enjoy the view of the ocean and watch the waves whiten on the shore.  On the other side is a line up of bars and restaurants serving international and local cuisines.  It is also a popular venue for family picnics where kids can play and run around safely.  It is just walking distance from Silliman University, other attractions, and many business establishments.  In essence, Rizal Boulevard is the place to be in Dumaguete when looking for great food, fun nightlife, relaxing afternoon with the family, culture immersion, and/or interesting shopping experience.

6 | Sidlakang Negros Village

Want to get a glimpse of Negros Oriental in just one place?  Sidlakang Negros Village is the answer.  In this area, each town or city in Negros Oriental has its own area referred to as pavilion showcasing what this particular town has to offer – be it tourist destinations, agricultural products, or artistic handicrafts.

7 | Silliman University

Dumaguete City is well-known for Silliman University, the country’s first Protestant University and the first American university in Asia.  Aside from locals, many students from neighboring cities and provinces come to Dumaguete for Silliman University, be it to study or simply explore what this well-known university is about.  Located in the heart of the city, many of this university’s buildings are considered landmarks.  The main library is considered one of the biggest libraries in the country and the Anthropology Museum houses artefacts from as early as 500-200 B.C.  The building where the museum is located was built in the 1930’s and most of its parts are still in its original form.

NOTE: The Buglasan Festival occurs annually in the middle of October.

EAT & DRINK

The following are flavorful foods to enjoy and restaurants to try while in Dumaguete City.

1 | 2 Story Kitchen

As the name implies, 2 Story Kitchen is a two-storey cafe serving Asian, particularly Korean dishes such as kimbap, bibimbap, and kimchi, and Western favorites like sandwiches, pizza, and pasta.  The ground floor of the cafe is a typical restaurant setup of tables and chairs while upstairs are semi-private booths with low tables and floor pillows.

2 | Casablanca Restaurant

Aside from European and other international dishes, Casablanca Restaurant also serves vegetarian dishes such as vegetarian curry and salad.  They boast of their cold cuts, over fresh breads from Casablanca bakery, imported cheeses, exquisite selection of wines, and imported beers.  The price is a little higher for Dumaguete but the quality, freshness, and taste of food as well as service are worth it.

3 | Gabby’s Bistro

If you miss the food back home, head to Gabby Bistro to satisfy your cravings.  From European, Mexican to American favorites, you can find it here in Gabby Bistro.  It has a cozy ambience, offers a nice view, and is great value for money.

4 | Hayahay Treehouse Bar and Viewdeck Restobar

Hayahay is a restobar overlooking the sea.  As the name implies, it has a treehouse bar great for hanging out with family and friends.  They serve the freshest seafood and ice cold beer.

5 | Jo’s Chicken Inato

Walking distance from Rizal Boulevard and Silliman University stands Jo’s Chicken Inato.  While they are famous for their chicken barbecue, they also serve other Filipino favorites including seafood, pork, and other chicken dishes.  Their prices are affordable and servings are large so the restaurant is recommended for big groups of people.

6 | Kri Restaurant

Kri is an upscale restaurant offering international dishes guaranteed to satisfy even the most discriminating palate.  Their bestseller is the Samurai Salmon but their chicken and pasta dishes are a must-try too.  They strive to provide healthy dishes by having vegan options, using canola oil, and avoiding the use of MSG.

7 | Lab-as Seafood Restaurant

Lab-as is a native word for fresh and since Dumaguete is a coastal city, you can expect only the freshest seafood from this restaurant.  There must be something unique about Lab-as Seafood since it’s been around since the 80’s and still popular even up to this day.  When in town, make sure to get your seafood fix here!

8 | Painitan

Painitan can be found in the public market of Dumaguete City.  The ideal time to go here is in the morning for an authentic local breakfast.  Breakfast here isn’t a typical Pinoy breakfast consisting of rice, egg, fish, and coffee.  People come here for budbud, puto maya and sikwate (hot chocolate).  Since it is located in the public market, the ambiance may not be the best there is but the fact that it is often crowded with locals and tourists alike means the food must be good and worth trying.

9 | Sans Rival Bistro

Sans Rival Bistro is in an old colonial house facing the ocean along Rizal Boulevard.  Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the restaurant serves burgers, sandwiches, seafood, and other Filipino dishes.  They offer al fresco dining so it’s a great spot for sightseeing and people-watching in this touristy part of the city.

Just behind Sans Rival Bistro stands Sans Rival Cakes and Pastries.  This is where you’ll find the famous sans rival and silvanas of Dumaguete – the most popular pasalubong to take back home to family and friends.

This chart is your guide to get an idea of how much to budget daily in Dumaguete City.  Actual amounts will depend on YOUR travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages … some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less. Prices are in USD.

Travel Costs

Accommodation.

A bed in a  hostel  dorm costs from 350 PHP ($7 USD), but smaller dorms can cost from 500 PHP ($10 USD).  For a private double, prices start around 700 PHP ($14 USD).

Most  budget hotels  begin at 700 PHP ($14 USD) per night for a double room and usually include free wifi and breakfast.  For  a three-star hotel , prices begin around 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.   AirBnB  is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from as little as 500 PHP ($10 USD) per night.  For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.

Resorts and luxury accommodations  vary greatly from 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) to 5,000+ PHP ($100+ USD).  However, there are some really nice resorts and luxury accommodations which are surprisingly affordable.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using  HostelWorld ,  Agoda ,  Booking.com , and  AirBnB . 

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 200 PHP ($4 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 200 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly. 

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The fare is usually between 7-25 PHP ($.20–.50 USD).

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips. 

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.  

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option. 

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter. 

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!  

Other activities such as Island Hopping, scuba diving, helmet diving, swimming with whale sharks, jungle trekking, canyoning, ATVs, jet skis, wakeboarding, cruises, parasailing, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and tours can cost as much as 1,250-5,000+ PHP ($25-100+ USD).

The Philippines is one of the least expensive places to learn how to scuba dive. Learning to scuba dive usually costs about 15,000-20,000 PHP ($300-400 USD), but often includes FREE accommodation for the duration of the course, which lasts three or four days.

Always book your tours and activities when you arrive.  Stick to travel agents who are selling on the ground. If a travel agent won’t negotiate with you, move on to the next until you find one that will.  Booking tours online is almost always more expensive.

• Don’t buy into the fear factor. The Philippines has an unjustified reputation of being a dangerous place. It’s true there are security guards everywhere, but that is to deter theft.
• Manila is NOT the Philippines. Get outside of the cities to see the real Philippines.
• Don’t over plan. Boats, buses, and even airplane schedules are notoriously unreliable. Be flexible.
• Check the weather. The weather varies greatly throughout the Philippines daily.
• Typhoons can have a huge impact on your plans. Account for this when planning your trip.
• It’s not cool to raise your voice or show outward frustration in public.
• Be polite at all times. Realize that your country’s sense of humor may be different from Filipino humor and take this into account when interacting with Filipinos and while in public places.
• Things move at a slower pace. Accept it … don’t get frustrated … but do account for it.
• Don’t drink the tap water… but stay hydrated! Save money by buying large bottles (6-10 liters) of water and using it to fill your water bottle or hydration bladder in your backpack.

Money Matters

The Philippines has its own currency called the Philippine Peso.  Banks, ATMs, and money-changers can be found in Dumaguete City.  If you are exploring the neighboring islands or provinces, make sure to bring enough cash that will last until the next time you get to an ATM or bank since most tours, transportation, and budget accommodations only accept cash.

Staying Connected

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around 50 PHP ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth 50 PHP ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal strength when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Things to Remember

There are some things you need to keep in mind to guide you from doing prohibited or illegal activities in Dumaguete City or anywhere in the Philippines.

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from or for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5,000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age is 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

Foreigners & Expats

If you are not a Filipino citizen, remember that you are a guest when visiting this country … be certain to act accordingly.  Respect the people, their customs, and the environment and wlidlife. You can be deported and banned … so behave … but have fun and enjoy all that this wonderful destination has to offer.

Dumaguete is the capital city and main port of Negros Oriental, the province that occupies the south-eastern part of Negros Island, in the Philippines. Also known as ‘The City of Gentle People’, due to the warm and agreeable nature of the locals.

Dumaguete is famous for having some of the most beautiful beaches in the Philippines and is a popular snorkelling and diving destination.

In addition, this city is home to some interesting historic monuments and religious sites to explore. With attractions just outside the city including waterfalls, hot springs, light houses and more.

So, here’s our ultimate guide to the best things to do in Dumaguete.

1. Manjuyod Sandbar & Dolphin Watching

Manjuyod Sandbar is technically up in Bais, but still one of the top things tourists do from Dumaguete.

If you can catch the tide when it is low, you’re in for a spot of paradise.

We visited at the lowest tide possible during our stay in Dauin in February, arriving at around 10am, but even then the water was at 0.4 metres deep. So unfortunately we didn’t get to see the sandbar peaking up from the water.

Although the location itself was still fascinating as it’s situated out in the middle of the ocean. The best way to visit is to book a Dolphin Watching & Manjuyod Sandbar Private Tour .

It’s an amazing place to hang out with the locals as they float around selling coconuts. Plus the stilt houses make for a great photo backdrop.

There are also banana boats that you can take a ride on around the outside of Manjuyod Sandbar.

2. Apo Island Tour

Apo Island is literally turtle heaven and definitely one of the best things to do in Dumaguete.

You are pretty much guaranteed to see turtles when you venture out on an Apo Island tour and the guides are just as excited as the tourists.

With turtles being Lauren’s absolute favourite animal, we couldn’t wait to get underwater and have a swim with the local habitants.

Sure enough as soon as we pulled into the Apo Island shores, we could see them from the boat bobbing their heads in and out of the water.

We dived straight in and although there were quite a few tourists, it wasn’t too busy. Fortunately we had our boat all to ourselves, so the local guide was fully focused on showing us around.

We snorkelled in a huge loop of the area following his fins and exploring the underwater world of an Apo Island tour.

Having swam with turtles in Gili Trawangan and Moalboal we both agreed this was the best experience we’d had!

For all turtle lovers, this has to be one of the best things to do in the Philippines .

3. Tierra Alta – The Santorini Of The Philippines

Just a short drive from Dumaguete city, Tierra Alta is a stunning spot, located high up in the mountains of Valencia.

It’s known as the Santorini of the Philippines, and it’s not hard to see why, mimicking the fresh clean whites and royal blues of the Greek island.

With a lighthouse as its centre piece, the grounds are also home to a restaurant, a swimming pool and they’re currently building out into a high end sub division.

There’s not much to do apart from relax at the mini Santorini, so whether you’re looking for a day by the pool, or to hire out the space for a private event, it makes for a very special location.

There are sun beds available and a small bar and restaurant underneath the shade, by the pool. So if you can plan around the weather and get lucky with a sunny day, you’re in for a beautiful day up in the hills.

Due to it’s sheer beauty, Tierra Alta is also a place where many choose to speak their very important vows to each other.

A dream wedding venue for any bride and groom. With its stunning location high in mountains and the ocean as a backdrop, it definitely wins the award for the most picturesque location around Dumaguete.

Also, if you’re the photography loving type, the beautiful lighthouse gives you lots of great photo opportunities.

4. Forest Camp

Forest Camp in Dumaguete is an awesome day out for friends and families in the Valencia region.

We were unsure what to expect before heading to Forest Camp Dumaguete for the day with our Filipino friends, but the outcome was awesome!

Full of hammock houses, natural pools and outdoor activities, you can have a jam-packed day full of fun here.

We spent the afternoon jumping in pools, taking photos, and jumping in more pools.

There are slides and plenty of private areas to chill in, so you don’t have to worry about it becoming overcrowded.

We took a picnic and enjoyed the sound of the falls in the background whilst eating and chatting away.

The tables and chairs inside the grounds are free to use, so you can grab your spot and set up camp for the day.

If you don’t want to take your own food, you can order from the restaurant on site which has a wide selection of food. From pizzas to local Filipino dishes and of course amazing mango shakes.

5. Casaroro Falls

Casaroro Falls is a stunning waterfall that flows from a sheer drop of 30 metres.

The waterfall itself is not very touristy, so on your way down, you may only pass one or two people. There is no marked route to the falls but it is easy enough to find.

Although you’ll be able to hear the power of Casaroro Falls from all around you, the beauty of it will pop up out of nowhere.

We peaked around the corner and suddenly there it was.

We had no expectations whatsoever when visiting Casaroro Falls as we hadn’t heard any reviews.

So, as you can imagine, we were pleasantly surprised at the outcome and had an awesome time admiring this amazing piece of mother nature.

If you’re staying in the area and have a spare afternoon, we highly recommend this incredible hidden spot as one of the best things to do in Dumaguete.

6. Pulangbato Falls

Pulangbato Falls is an easy to reach, family friendly day out in Valencia. With multiple falls and swimming holes.

When you arrive, you park up and walk in. There is no hike involved, just a whole lot of beauty to take in.

There are other smaller falls at this cute tourist destination, but the big Pulangbato Falls is hard to miss.

To get down to the base of falls you get to walk across a beautiful photogenic bridge.

You will find two small cafes, one offering really local food and the other being a little more bistro.

There is overnight accommodation available to rent, consisting of cute little cottages with balconies overlooking the falls.

Also available to rent, are small huts and tables and chairs – great for if you are just there for the day.

Pulangbato Falls is really perfect if you’re traveling alone, for family days out or even for couples. It’s completely safe and suitable for children or any tourist.

7. Red Rock Hot Spring

Red Rock Hot Spring is a fascinating piece of nature and the ultimate place to relax and unwind in the Valencia region.

It started as a private sanctuary, owned by a local family from Valencia, used by family and friends to relieve stress.

They decided to build a pool around the stream to accommodate more members of the public.

As the word got around, the public started to make more use of the pools and enjoy the waters, which prompted the owners to open it officially for the people and name it Red Rock Hot Spring.

Around 5 minutes before you hit the springs, you’ll cross a bridge with steam rising from underneath the rocks. You will be hit by a strong ‘eggy’ smell and that’s when you know you are in the right place!

Inside Red Rock Hot Springs though, there are no bad smells, just smiling faces. The owners are super friendly and welcomed us with open arms to their popular spot.

It’s an ideal way to spend the afternoon after exploring the surrounding Valencia area. Great to just to take some down time and relieve the body of any aches and pains.

The newest and most sought out place for leisure and nature-tripping.

8. St Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral

St Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral Church is said to be the oldest stone church in Negros. The church was originally built in 1754 to 1776. It was reconstructed in 1885 and the present facade was extended in 1936.

This is the main Roman Catholic Church in the region and is known for its exquisite architecture.

Known by the locals as the ‘Dumaguete Cathedral’, this beautiful church has been here for hundreds of years and is still one of the top Dumaguete tourist spots.

Statues of Saints Matthew, Mark, Luke and John can be found above the four pillars which hold the entrance gate of the Cathedral Church, and on the facade are the statues of Saints Peter and Paul.

Many of the locals believe that their patroness, St Catherine of Alexandria, is miraculous and this gives them a reason to be happy and celebrate life.

If you like fascinating history and stunning architecture then this is definitely worth a visit.

9. Rizal Boulevard

Rizal Boulevard is the main stretch of street riding the coast of Dumaguete city.

The Boulevard is named after Dr. Jose Rizal, a Filipino national hero, renowned for the part he played in the Filipino revolution against the Spanish during their colonial period.

Nowadays Rizal Boulevard is one of the top Dumaguete tourist spots with lots to see and do including its famous street food market.

Starting at 5pm and finishing around 1am you can try many types of local foods. Including plenty of tempura and even the famous ‘balut’, a developing bird embryo that is boiled and eaten from the shell.

Rizal Boulevard is very family friendly and during the day you will see people coming to meet up, have picnics, chat, play guitars and visit the shops and restaurants that run down one side of the Boulevard.

There are plenty of benches to sit and relax whilst watching boats come in and out of the nearby port or just enjoy some people watching.

During certain festivals and holidays, there are also parades, barbecues, and live music to enjoy along the Rizal Boulevard.

If you are entering Dumaguete via ferry, then Rizal Boulevard is where you will arrive.

10. Sans Rival

Sans Rival Dumaguete is possibly the most famous dessert shop in the Philippines.

In fact most locals would say this is number 1 on the Dumaguete tourist spots list!

With the title of the shop translating to ‘Without Rival’, it’s fair to say we can firmly back up the name choice of this unique cake and pastry store.

Sans rival is a Filipino dessert cake made of layers of buttercream, meringue and chopped cashews. The cake can be decorated, left plain or garnished with pistachios.

Widely known for its Sans Rival cakes and Silvannas, a frozen cookie version of the Sans Rival, it’s a haven for any sweet-toothed dessert lover.

11. Silliman University

Siliman University may not be top of everyones things to do in Dumaguete list but just the campus grounds and beautiful buildings are worth a visit.

It was the first American university in the Philippines and in fact the first in the entire continent of Asia.

Founded in 1901 it was originally an elementary school for boys. Now open to both sexes it’s ranked as the 4th best University in the Philippines.

The university contains ten colleges, five schools, and three institutes. Enrolling over 10,000 students from the Philippines and at least 56 other countries.

It maintains ties with the Central Philippine University as its sister school. This is an institution of higher learning founded by the Protestant Baptist Americans in 1905 in Iloilo City.

Siliman University now prides itself on its vision as ‘A leading Christian institution committed to total human development for the well-being of society and environment.’

Definitely worth a walk around the tree lined sidewalks and the beautiful buildings – both old and new. If you have time, tours of the campus are also available.

Although it may seem like a low-key destination mostly known with students for the Silliman University, within the City there are a handful of Dumaguete Tourist Spots to explore. And a 30-minute ride into the highlands leads to a whole different climate in the Valencia region packed with tourist attractions unlike any other.

If you are looking for full days of adventure, then the tourist spots along Dumaguete’s outskirts and highlands are the answer.

Expect towering cascades, hot springs, and a water park within 30 minutes ride from Dumaguete City centre. And a ride out of Dumaguete City, through the countryside and farmland leads to 2 huge lakes nestled within mountain tops covered in jungle.

WHERE IS DUMAGUETE

Dumaguete City is on Negros island in the South of the Philippines. It is somewhere in the centre of popular islands like Cebu and Bohol and is a 90 minute ferry ride from Siquijor island.

To give a better perspective, most tourists first set foot in the Philippines on Cebu island. Dumaguete is on the next island (Negros island) further South of Cebu and a narrow straight separates one island from the other.

HOW TO GET TO DUMAGUETE

Since Dumaguete is close to other popular islands, getting there is straightforward.

There are 2 ports of entry to Dumaguete, the Sibulan Port about 10 minutes ride out of the City and the Port of Dumaguete directly in the City.

If you are already somewhere in the South of Cebu (Moalboal or Oslob) hop on a Ceres southbound bus and let the driver or ticket officer know you are heading to Dumaguete. The bus will drop you off about 1 km from Liloan port and you can take a tricycle to drop you off right outside the port.

Then from Liloan port hop on the 30 minute ferry. Ferries depart every 30-minutes and cost 70 PHP ($1.40). Once you arrive in Sibulan port you will be a 10 minute ride from Dumaguete City and you can use a tricycle, jeepney or multi-cab for the journey.

We hopped on a jeepney and paid 10 PHP ($0.20) each. But keep in mind jeepneys have fixed routes so you may still have some walking to do from where you get off.

TIP: There are multiple ferries every day between Siquijor and Dumaguete. The total ferry ride is around 90 minutes. Ferry prices start at 120 PHP ($2.40) up to 380 PHP ($11.6) for a business class seat with OceanJet ferry.

From Bohol, the process takes longer and involves 2 back-to-back ferries.

Take a ferry to Siquijor from Tagbilaran port in Bohol. The ferry will dock at Larena port in Siquijor so you will need to see if any ferries will be available to Dumaguete when you arrive. And there is another port named Siquijor port (on Siquijor island) most ferries to Dumaguete depart from Siquijor port so you may need to change ports, it is about a 10-minute ride via tricycle.

DUMAGUETE TOURIST SPOTS

Rizal boulevard.

Rizal Boulevard in Dumaguete is a popular promenade along the City’s coast and is one of the main tourist attractions.

Hotels, restaurants and bars dot Rizal Boulevard facing the ocean and making one of Dumaguete’s most sought areas.

During the hot sunny days not much will be going on but come sunset time and the 1 km stretch comes to life. It isn’t necessarily a sunset spot since you won’t be facing in that direction. But street vendors, food stalls and the fact many locals head over for the evening make for a vibrant atmosphere.

ST. CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA CATHEDRAL PARISH

The St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral Parish is right next to the beautiful Dumaguete bell tower. Although these 2 tourist attractions in Dumaguete are 2 separate sites, they can be easily combined since there is only a 3 minute walk from to the other.

The Dumaguete Bell Tower is the most prominent. A tall round tower shooting above the surrounding buildings and the St. Catherine Cathedral. The Cathedral is usually open to the public but I’m not sure if the tower is accessible to visitors.

CASARORO FALLS

The list of places to visit in Dumaguete may be limited but a short ride out of the city leads to a whole different level of tourist destinations.

And the answer for those looking for a stunning attraction is a towering cascade named Casaroro falls.

Although there are concrete stairs and a paved path leading to Casaroro falls, the area is mostly in its raw, natural beauty. And at some we also had to make our way over the river along a makeshift bamboo bridge.

Casaroro is at the end of a 30 minute trail along that leads from the parking area down a flight of stairs and into a valley. All along the valley are streams of water closed in the jungle.

We didn’t see the cascade and some point after a bend along the path, this huge powerfall waterfall soaking all the area with spray and creating mossy green boulders and everything slippery.

From Dumaguete City it takes about 1 hour to reach the Balinsasayao Twin Lakes. The ride itself could be considering a thing to do in Dumaguete which will take you along the highland countryside on the outskirts of Dumaguete.

The Balinsasayao Twin Lakes and 2 big crater lakes separated by a ridge. Mountain tops covered in a tropical landscape home to lots of bird life enclose the lakes.

We came here during the week and there was only about 10 other visitors. However, on weekend and festive days the lakes seem to be one of the places locals visit.

Keep in mind that swimming in the lakes isn’t allowed but you can rent a boat that will row you around or take you to a beautiful viewpoint looking over both lakes.

Instead of taking the boat to reach the viewpoint, we decided to take a 30-minute trek through the jungle and over slippery stairs and paths. The trek is straightforward and also has a railing to hang on to but the fact all the rocky parts are covered in moss makes it extremely slippery and challenging.

FOREST CAMP MOUNTAIN RESORT

A getaway for weekend breaks with locals and a great place to visit while in Dumaguete, Forest Camp Mountain Resort is the perfect place to spend a few hours, a whole day, or even spend the night. And it only takes 30 minutes to get there by car or tricycle from Dumaguete.

The property is a huge piece of land with loads of pools and water based activities along with a skate park, zip line, and even a rock-climbing wall.

Considering The Forest Camp Mountain Resort is a man-made tourist attraction in Valencia, it blends in well with its surrounding landscape. And we actually had fun playing around in one of the slides. I don’t actually know what the locals thought seeing these 2 grown ups running up and down the slide for about an hour, but it was a fun thing to do.

PULANGBATO FALLS

The region of Valencia is loaded with interesting tourist attractions worth visiting from Dumaguete. One of them is Pulangbato Falls.

If you want to visit a waterfall that is very easy to reach, then Pulangbato is the answer. From Dumaguete it takes 30 minutes to reach the main entry and a further 5 minute walk along a paved path and through a resort.

Although getting to Pulangbato Falls is for some reason through a resort, the waterfall area hasn’t really had any built up parts. There is a wobbly rope bridge crossing over from the resort area to the foot of the cascade and a small hut beside the natural waterfall pool.

The orange weaved rope bridge is probably one of the features of Pulangbato and is a photogenic highlight of this attraction with a powerful cascade in the background. There isn’t any restrictions for swimming in the pool, just don’t get close to the cascade for your own safety.

RED ROCKS HOT SPRINGS

The Red Hot Springs are a great to visit while in Dumaguete and should be combined with Pulangbato Falls. Both attractions are on the same route, in fact these last to tourist spots are just a 2 minute ride from one another.

During our trip through Asia we visited a few hot springs, but Red Rocks where are favorite. The springs are located in the highlands where temperatures are much cooler than the city and it seems there isn’t so much humidity. This and the fact Pulangbato Falls is close is a good reason why you should visit these hot springs.

We actually came to Red Rock Hot Springs after visiting and swimming in the cold water at Pulangbato Falls. And add to that, exactly when we parked the scooter, it also started raining. This was definitely the perfect combination to soak in the hot baths.

The resort style Hot Springs isn’t really big and there are 2 decent sized pools on 2 different and each level has a slight difference in temperature. But the top level pool felt like it had the perfect temperature on that day.

Keep in mind that although The Red Rock Hot Springs are in a cooler climate, on hot days it may not be the perfect tourist to visit. We visited during the day but it was gloomy and no sun. On hot days it may be best to avoid the mid day heat and visit once the sun starts to go down and the day cools.

WHERE TO STAY IN DUMAGUETE

The main area where most tourists stay is in Dumaguete City itself. This is where most restaurants, Cafes, hotels, and bars are located and is also close to the port of Dumaguete where the ferry to Siquijor and Bohol departs.

Another option is to stay in the cooler climate of Valencia. Here you will be close to some of the most beautiful attractions. But keep in mind that Valencia is a 30 minute ride from the City and its amenities (restaurants, bars, shops) and once the sun goes down there isn’t really much to do.

THE FLYING FISH HOSTEL

A relatively new resort on the outskirts of Dumaguete. The Henry resort features hut style high end lodging options dotted around an outdoor pool and tall palm trees in a tropical garden. Every room is furnished in style and offers all amenities you could imagine like A/C, minibar, coffee/tea maker, flat screen T.V and more. Onsite is also a restaurant. This is a property for those who want to spend a few nights in a luxurious tropical hotel but don’t want to pay a hefty price tag.

DUMAGUETE ITINERARY

If you are going to be hopping the islands in the South of the Philippines, then at some point you are bound to pass through Dumaguete. And as to how many days you should spend in Dumaguete, anything between 1 to 3 nights is enough depending on how much you want to see.

Here is the exact route we took in the South of the Philippines

We started in Cebu City and went down to Moalboal. From here on we moved on to Dumaguete, Siquijor and Bohol in this order. All these destinations are connected with daily ferries.

On day 1 start off from the tourist attractions within the City and have dinner along Rizal Boulevard.

On day 2 include 3 of the nearby tourist spots. Casaroro Falls, Pulangbato Falls and Red Rock Hot springs are about 30 minutes ride away and close to one another. If you start early enough you could also include The Forest Camp Mountain Resort after Casaroro Falls and end the day with Pulangbato and Red Rocks.

Since all 4 tourist attractions are close to one another, the total travel time between all spots and back to Dumaguete will be around 90 minutes. Considering only Casaroro Falls involves a 30 minute hike, it would be possible to spend 2 hours at each attractions and if you start at 8am be back at 6:00pm.

Balinsasayao is a completely different route. It takes around 1 hour to drive up to Balinsasayao Twin Lakes, therefore it would be best to reserve at least half a day for this attraction.

BEST TIME TO GO

Having a tropical climate means there are only 2 season in the Philippines. Either the rainy season or dry season and temperatures rarely drop below 20° C.

Weatherwise, the best time to visit the Philippines and Dumaguete is from November to March. You can expect mostly sunny days and almost no rain during those months.

November – March:  Best weather + peak tourist months and higher prices

April – October:  Rainy months but not constant + cheaper prices and less crowds

The dry season is also when most tourists visit the Philippines. Also, expect higher prices on accommodation and tours might be more expensive and some popular attractions will get busy at certain times especially on weekend and festive days when the locals have days off.

Rainy season doesn’t necessarily mean it will constantly rain. Usually, during the rainy season, rain tends to come in heavy bursts and only lasts about an hour.

So if you want to find fewer tourists and get cheaper accommodation prices, then the Months between April and October  (rainy season)  should be your choice.

BEST RESTAURANTS IN DUMAGUETE

Dumaguete is in fact a City yet it feels more like a charming coastal town with the perks offered in Cities. This is also true for its large concentration of restaurants.

Whether its a quick bite at one of the Cafe’s or local eateries, or a night out for great food, Dumaguete offers a broad appeal of places to eat.

Here we have listed the best restaurants we tried out during our week in Dumaguete. Almost all the restaurants are within a 10 to 15-minute walk from Rizal Boulevard. There are also some good cafe’s listed which also feature high-speed wifi.

Neva’s Pizza: a cozy restaurant pumping out authentic brick oven style Italian pizza and a variety of Italian, western and local dishes.

Tres Bistro: offering a combination of local and western food.

Adamo: our favourite restaurant. Fusion dishes combined with a fine dining experience yet nothing too extravagant. Also, a few great craft beers to try. Prices are on the higher end compared with other places.

Tom N Toms Coffee: serves delicious quick bites, iced and hot coffees and has good wifi

Fun Cafe/Bar: a social place for local teens and featuring a pool table, board games and small cubicles for extra privacy. The high speed wifi connection is the best we found in Dumaguete.

It's best to plan your trip around its dry summer season as well as its colorful festivals to fully enjoy the province and their culture. This section is divided into two: a guide on the dry and summer season, plus the two annual festivals within the region.

Dumaguete weather is at its best from February to March, the chilly but dry months of the year; and from May to early June, the summer months. If you don't like traveling during the rainy season, avoid going there around October.

If you don't mind the rain and the closed down tourist spots, you will be able to witness and enjoy one of its famous festivals in the mid of October

If you want to see the city in its lively and vibrant form, consider visiting during the time of their festive celebrations. Both locals and international travelers attend street parades and join local games that are exciting and fun to be a part of!

Two of its most popular celebrations include the Sandurot Festival and Buglasan Festival. This section will describe the festivals and how important it is in helping shape the culture of Dumaguete.

Sandurot Festival

The city holds its Sandurot Festival, which means "fellowship and reaching out," every September. You wouldn't want to miss the Pasigarbo event, where the streets are full of drumbeats and dancing.

And of course, Pasundayag, where different stories of the city's traditions are narrated through dancing. The roads are overcrowded during this time, so make sure to keep your essential belongings near you.

Buglasan Festival

In the middle of October every year, they celebrate the Buglasan Festival, popularly known as "The Festival of Festivals." It's a province-wide event that runs for ten days. Aside from exciting activities, you can witness street dancing and showdowns every 3rd Friday of October.

During the dry and summer season, it's best to wear light clothing such as t-shirts, blouses, and shorts. Regardless of the weather, always bring a light jacket or umbrella with you as unexpected showers might occur.

If you're attending a festival, make sure to bring an extra shirt, especially if you're planning to party until the early dawn. Bring slippers and running shoes, so you have options to wear for any tour.

How to Get to Dumaguete​

Photo by Philippine Airlines There are four main entry points when going to Dumaguete: Manila, Cebu, Bacolod, and Bohol. It's essential to do your research on which option for transport to choose and what time to leave so you can maximize your stay here.

Make sure to book all airplane or ferry tickets in advance to avoid problems during your trip.

From Manila 

If you're coming from the capital of the Philippines, Manila in Luzon, the fastest way is to fly directly to Dumaguete island. Below is the detailed information, including which airlines you can choose from.

Usually, the flight will take you around 1 hour to 15 or 25 minutes, depending on the airline. You can check flights in local airlines such as Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific . Make sure to book in advance as there might be a lot of people going to Dumaguete during peak season, specifically during the summer season. Have your travel documents with you at all times.

Cebu is an island located right next to Dumaguete. From Cebu, you can ride a plane, a bus, or a ferry, depending on your budget and schedule.

Regardless of your chosen mode of transportation, make sure to plan and buy tickets in advance (if applicable) to avoid delayed or worse, canceled plans. Always have your travel documents ready in case you need to present it to an airport authority or personnel.

If you're looking for the fastest way, your best option is to take a 50-minute direct flight. It’s convenient and safer if you’re not familiar with other modes of transportation.

Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific cater flights from Cebu to Dumaguete. Have your travel documents prepared before booking a flight. Book in advance to get the most comfortable seats in your chosen time.

You can hop on a bus from Cebu's South Bus Terminal in Cebu City. It is if you want a less expensive but longer route than a direct flight. The earliest trip starts at 5:30 AM and the latest is at 6:00 PM.

Since there's no bridge connecting the main island of Negros Oriental and Cebu, the bus will board a ferry and continue the travel to Dumaguete. The total travel time is around 5 hours and 30 minutes to 6 hours. Don't be shy to ask the bus conductor should you have any concerns during the ride.

You don't have to ride a bus anymore if you're coming from parts of Cebu near Liloan Port in Oslob. Just board the ferry bound to Sibulan Port that will take you an hour and 30 minutes of travel time. From Sibulan Port, ride a 20-30 minute jeep or multicab going to Dumaguete island. Book in advance if you can as there are limited seats during peak hours.

Bacolod is on the southeastern half of the large island of Negros, Negros Occidental. From Bacolod, you can ride a bus direct to Dumaguete. Below is the detailed information, including which bus line you should take.

Go directly to the Bacolod South Bus terminal and look for available buses operated by Ceres Liner . It's the most effective and convenient way without unnecessary stops along the way. Travel time is around 5 to 6 hours. If you can, go to the bus stop 30 minutes before your target time. Seats get occupied quickly, especially during the morning.

Similar to Cebu, Bohol is a vast island region near Dumaguete that you can reach via a quick flight or a ferry ride. Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific offer flights at selected times. Ocean Jet Ferry offers ferry rides that are cheap and convenient.

Just make sure to book tickets at least a week for your chosen trip as seats may be bought quickly due to the number of people traveling from Bohol. Make sure to bring all essential documents with you too for fast entry to these transportations.

If you want the fastest route from Bohol, take a direct 50-minute flight from Tagbilaran. Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific offer flights going to and from Tagbilaran. Non-stop flights are 50 minutes long while connecting flights are on an average of 4 hours to 5 hours long. Book in advance to get the best seats. 

You can ride fast crafts and ferries bound from Tagbilaran in Bohol. Ocean Jet Ferry offers rides going to and from the Tagbilaran port. The travel time takes around two hours. Take note of their policies and requirements before traveling.  

Most modes of transportation are accessible and cheap. Compared to other regions, traveling in Dumaguete is pretty straightforward. Depending on your budget and comfort and convenience preference, you can choose from these types of transportation options:

Fare is cheap, and if you're going around Dumaguete, some even offer exclusive use for tours. Just make sure to have at least an idea on the best route by searching online so you can avoid getting overcharged.

To reach nearby towns, you can head to the Ceres Bus Terminal in Dumaguete City and hop on and off a city bus. Riding a bus is your best option for long-distance travel within and outside Dumaguete. 

Bring exact or smaller bills for the fare so the operator won’t have a hard time finding change for your money.

Self-Drive Motorcycle

If you want a more rugged type of transportation, you can opt to rent a motorcycle. This type of transportation is perfect for a short city tour, especially if you're a pair of travelers. You can also rent one but make sure that you know how to maneuver it, especially if you're in a place you're not familiar with.

Ask if you can use a mobile app such as Waze or  Google Maps while driving the motorcycle. They usually have a mobile phone holder you can attach on the motorcycle.

Private Tour Vans

Alternatively, there are plenty of travel agencies that offer private tours in vans to explore an array of activities in Dumaguete. The majority of these tour operators are DOT-accredited, which means their offered tours and services are tried and tested.

It's a good option if you're seeking a hassle-free adventure. All you have to do is focus on your outfits for the day and completing your itinerary.

When in Dumaguete, you have to keep in mind that the most crucial aspect of your itinerary is the place you'll be staying in. If you're going to the beach, it might be best to stay at beach resorts.

If you're going on a sightseeing excursion, it might be best to stay near the city center. It depends on what activities you'll be doing and destinations you'll be going to during your stay in the beautiful province.

This section will discuss the types of accommodations, neighborhoods and areas, and the top accommodations in any budget within the region.

There are a lot of accommodation types in Dumaguete. You have to find one that fits your preference. Consider your budget, the number of people staying, and its proximity to the attractions you're planning to go to.

Make sure to book in advance so you can get the best rooms and deals within the area. Prepare your travel documents such as passport and valid I.D. so you can reserve quickly. Also, expect that most accommodations ask for a security deposit that will be refunded upon check-out. 

Island and Beach Resorts or Hotels

If you're looking for a place to stay that has direct access to the beaches, then staying at a resort is ideal. It's the most convenient choice if you're traveling for island and beach trips or diving adventures.

Most offer rooms with beachfront access and have excellent amenities such as Wi-Fi and breakfast. Some even have their indoor pool. There are reasonable hotels that are quite near the city center, providing comfort regardless if you're staying for business or vacation. Most of these hotels offer valet service and 24-hour security.

Vacation Rentals

Homestays are also popular here. Many homeowners work outside the province, which is why they let other people rent their houses during peak season, and sometimes, off-peak season.

It's much better to rent a home if you're in a big group as you get the extra amenities such as a kitchen and laundry area. You might have to pay a security deposit and a cleaning fee, so make sure to ask the owner in advance.

In case you're traveling solo, or you're a group who's into budget-friendly accommodations, don't fret! There are multiple hostels in Dumaguete that are suitable for any budget traveler. Avoid the ones located on far neighborhoods as the commute going to and from the top destinations in the province might be more expensive.

The province of Dumaguete is divided into 30 barangays. However, when you're in the region, you'd mostly be frequenting five towns only, namely: Dumaguete City, Dauin, Bacong, Valencia and Sibulan.

It's essential to be familiar with these areas so you won't get lost. Here are some of the critical information you need to know about these neighborhoods and areas in the province:

Dumaguete City

Often known as the most populated neighborhood in the region, this is where you can find popular establishments for food, shopping, and many more. Nightlife is booming in this neighborhood too.

It's the business and town proper, and the main link to transport in the other cities. Most attractions included in Dumaguete tours can also be found here.

If you're planning to dive to Apo Island, you'll have to go to this neighborhood. It is where Apo Island is, a volcanic island known to have unique rock formations and abundant marine life.

It's also the home of Baslay Hot Springs, a geothermal spring which can be accessed by a short hike through a jungle. Most local and international travelers stay within the area for the mentioned attractions.

Located on the southern part of the coast, it is one of the smallest towns not only in Dumaguete but in the whole Negros Oriental. Most historical monuments are located here, as well as art museums catering to various local and international artists. You can ride a jeepney from the city center going to Bacong.

When you're in Valencia, you will notice that the winds are more relaxed than in the city proper. It's because it's on higher ground. It's the main area for agricultural production in Dumaguete with the abundance of fruits and vegetables. Going here is easy as routes are going directly here from the city center.

It is where you can find Dumaguete's airport. The local seaport is also in this area, as well as other modes of transportation. Although there's no nightlife in the area, it's one of the most highly-developed municipalities in the province. You can comfortably ride a jeep going here from the city center.

Since Dumaguete is known as a budget-friendly destination, there are plenty of accommodations that won't cost you an arm and a leg. But if you're looking for a more upscale temporary home, there are also mid-range to luxury resorts and hotels that you can choose.

How to get to Dumaguete

The city can be reached via air, land and sea. Multiple daily flights are departing from Manila and take passengers in just over an hour to the capital of Negros Oriental. Cebu Pacific also offers an flight from Cebu . The propeller machine takes a scenic route with a lower altitude along the coastline and reaches the city of gentle people in less than 30 minutes. The Dumaguete Airport is actually located in the neighboring municipality of Sibulan just north of the city limit. If you are coming from the other side of the island, one can reach Dumaguete City through the Ceres Liner bus. The main terminal for these buses in Negros Oriental are in Dumaguete City and will not cost a thousand pesos to reach the destination.

Ferry to Dumaguete

Taking a ferry from Cebu City is another option to get to Negros Oriental. Some ferry lines go directly to the Sea Port in Dumaguete , while others run via the port of Tagbilaran on Bohol. There are more ferry connections from Dumaguete to and from the northern towns in Mindanao. Also Siquijor is multiple times daily connected via ferries of different companies.

Tips while visiting Dumaguete City:

Know when the peak seasons are before calculating your budget for the trip. (June to September are off-peak season, October to November is Buglasan Festival & Dumaguete Charter Day, December & January are definitely peak seasons, March till May are summer break for most schools)

There is always something going on in the neighboring towns and cities of Dumaguete all year round. Check the different fiesta and festival celebration a month before your trip and see if there is another thing to look forward to.

Locals have adopted several accents from its neighboring islands. It is normal if you hear them shouting at each other within one-meter distance. This is usually the normal tone they use when ‘talking’.

If you stay in a guesthouse or apartment with a kitchen that allows you to cook, buy your fresh ingredients from the public market as early as possible (6am-7am best times). Supermarkets like Robinson’s Place and Lee Plaza usually opens around 9am or 10am.
