British Airways is one of the largest airlines when it comes to flying across the Atlantic, offering travelers the option to "cross the pond" in options including economy to true first class. It's the class of service that determines your British Airways baggage allowance — from no free checked bags up to three checked bags of 70 pounds each.

Let's dive into the details of British Airways' checked baggage and carry-on bag policies and fees.

How to find your British Airways baggage allowance

If you've already booked your flight, the easiest way to find your baggage allowance is by logging into your reservation via Manage My Booking . After entering your booking reference number and last name, select your flight to see the details of your booking. As shown in the example below, under "Your flight choices," you'll find your seat selection and baggage allowance.

Whether you've booked a flight or not, you can always check your baggage allowance using the baggage allowance tool on British Airways' website . You'll need to enter the route, departure date, ticketing date and booking class.

As an example, I searched for a premium economy seat on a flight from New York to London on Feb. 1, 2024 (ticketed on August 1, 2023). This ticket would get two free checked bags up to 51 pounds (23 kilograms) measuring up to 35 x 30 x 17 inches (90 x 75 x 43 centimeters).

Generally, the British Airways baggage policy depends on what fare type you booked:

Economy Basic: No checked bags.

Economy: One checked bag up to 51 pounds (23 kilograms).

Premium economy: Two checked bags up to 51 pounds each.

Business: Two checked bags of up to 70 pounds (32 kilograms) each.

First: Three checked bags up to 70 pounds each.

British Airways overweight and oversized baggage fees

You may need to pay an overweight bag fee if your bag weighs more than 51 pounds (23 kilograms) and you're flying in economy or premium economy. The overweight bag fee depends on the currency used in the country that you're departing from. The primary options are:

65 Great British pounds.

100 U.S. dollars.

100 Canadian dollars.

If you're departing from a country that uses a different local currency, the GBP amount will be converted to that local currency.

Note that British Airways doesn't accept any checked bags weighing more than 70 pounds (32 kilograms).

However, British Airways does accept some oversized bags — those measuring larger than 35 x 30 x 17 inches (90 x 75 x 43 centimeters) — as part of your standard baggage allowance and without additional fees. However, you'll need to check these "out-of-gauge bags" at a special bag drop at least 90 minutes before departure.

The maximum size for British Airways checked baggage is 74 x 29 x 25 inches (190 x 75 x 65 centimeters).

What are British Airways carry-on bag size dimensions?

All British Airways tickets include a "cabin bag" and "hand bag." The maximum weight and dimensions differ between these two types of British Airways carry-on bags.

Your "hand bag" — also known as a "personal item" on other airlines — can measure up to 16 x 12 x 6 inches (40 x 30 x 15 centimeters) and weigh up to 51 pounds (23 kilograms). This bag is guaranteed to fly in the cabin with you. So be sure to pack your essential items in this bag — such as electronics, medicines, travel documents and battery packs.

Meanwhile, your "cabin bag" can measure up to 22 x 18 x 10 inches (56 x 45 x 25 centimeters) and weigh up to 51 pounds (23 kilograms). This bag may need to be checked depending on how full your flight is, so don't pack anything critical in it.

How to increase your British Airways checked baggage allowance

What if the current British Airways baggage allowance isn’t cutting it for your trip? Here are a couple of ways that you can boost your baggage allowance with British Airways.

Oneworld alliance elite status

Travelers with Sapphire or Emerald Oneworld elite status get an extra checked bag on most British Airways fares. If you have Oneworld Sapphire elite status, you'll get two checked bags up to 70 pounds (32 kilograms) each, regardless of which cabin you booked. Oneworld Emerald travelers get one additional checked bag up to 70 pounds (32 kilograms), plus up to 70 pounds (32 kilograms) on all other checked bags.

Critically, British Airways opts out of providing these Oneworld elite benefits on its "hand baggage-only" basic economy fares. Travelers who book these basic economy fares won't get a free checked bag regardless of their elite status.

For reference, the following airline elite statuses grant Oneworld Sapphire status:

British Airways Silver.

American Airlines Platinum .

Alaska Airlines MVP Gold .

And the following elite status members get Oneworld Emerald benefits:

British Airways Gold.

American Airlines Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum .

Alaska Airlines MVP Gold 75K and MVP Gold 100K .

Remember that you can get American Airlines AAdvantage elite status solely from spending on an eligible AAdvantage credit card. That means you can potentially spend your way to free baggage allowance on British Airways without taking a single flight.

» Learn more: American Airlines Loyalty Points: How to earn AAdvantage elite status

Upgrade your booking class

If you're facing steep extra baggage fees, it may be worth checking the cost to upgrade your ticket to a premium cabin . Upgrading from standard economy to premium economy will get you a second free checked bag up to 51 pounds (23 kilograms).

Meanwhile, switching from premium economy to business class will boost your per-bag allowance from 51 pounds (23 kilograms) to 70 pounds (32 kilograms) each. And upgrading from business class to first class gets you a third checked bag of up to 70 pounds (32 kilograms).

Check the terms associated with your ticket to ensure you're actually getting the additional baggage allowance as part of the upgrade.

Final thoughts on British Airways checked baggage allowance

British Airways includes a free carry-on bag and personal item with all tickets. However, you won't be able to check a bag for free if you book one of its cheapest basic economy fares. All other fares include at least one checked bag of up to 51 pounds (23 kilograms) — or up to 70 pounds (32 kilograms) on business and first class fares.

Oneworld elite members may get an additional checked bag on British Airways, depending on their status tier and the booking class. However, even top-tier elites can't avoid British Airways' restriction on basic economy fares.

British Airways' Baggage Allowance: 5 Things You Need To Know

  • British Airways offers a generous baggage allowance for passengers in all travel classes, with weights ranging from 23kg to 32kg per bag.
  • Carry-on bags must adhere to size restrictions, but weight restrictions are more lenient and bags can weigh up to 23kg.
  • Oversized or heavy items may incur additional charges or need to be shipped as cargo, and passengers should check with partner airlines for their specific baggage allowances.

Britain’s national airline, British Airways, is known for its hospitality and service on the ground and in the air. Part of the airline's service is its baggage allowance for air passengers. As a full-service airline, British Airways takes pride in offering a generous baggage allowance in all travel classes.

Simple Flying provides baggage information essential for passengers traveling with the airline, as highlighted by British Airways.

British Airways checked baggage allowance

The allowance varies based on the fare type and cabin.

The checked baggage allowance differs based on the fare type and cabin. Passengers traveling on the Economy Basic fare do not get a free checked baggage allowance. Standard Economy and Premium Economy passengers are entitled to checked baggage allowance, up to 23 kg (51 lb) per bag. Business and First class passengers receive a generous weight allowance of up to 32 kg (70 lb) per bag.

All passengers can purchase additional baggage before or upon check-in. Notably, the cost of additional baggage and the number of bags that can be purchased depending on the class of travel and destination. British Airways also follows a rather strict baggage size policy for checked baggage.

British Airways carry-on size

The airline restricts passengers for handbag and cabin bag sizes.

British Airways provides a specific allowance for carry-on bags. Passengers must particularly follow size restrictions for carry-on bags. The airline provides cabin bags and handbag dimensions (height, width, and depth). However, unlike many large international airlines that weigh carry-on bags upon check-in, British Airways allows generous weight for the carry-on bags.

Which Airlines Have The Most Generous Checked Baggage Allowances?

Passengers can take up to 23 kg (51 lb) in the carry-on as long as the size of the bag is within the allowed dimensions. The airline may penalize oversized cabin bags, the cost of which depends on fare type and destination. It is noteworthy that the listed dimensions include straps and wheels, particularly on the cabin bags.

British Airways baggage contents allowance

Out-of-gauge or oversized items must be treated differently.

The airline allows passengers to travel with almost anything (except for restricted items), including sports gear and music instruments. When traveling with sports or music equipment, passengers must ensure that the size of the equipment is within the allowable limit. Small equipment can be taken onboard as a carry-on bag.

Oversized equipment can be allowed, but passengers may need to take additional steps. Anything larger or heavier must be secured properly and shipped as cargo. Other out-of-gauge pieces, such as snow sports bags, must be dropped off at the oversized baggage area at least 90 minutes before the flight time.

Extra weight or size

The airline charges for overweight or oversized bags.

The extra checked baggage allowance depends on the space available in the aircraft. One may wonder how much space one or two extra bags would require in an aircraft. However, airplanes must follow precise weight and balance to ensure a safe flight.

The cost of extra checked baggage depends on the class of travel and destination. Passengers are always restricted to the number of bags/pieces they can check in. In terms of carry-on bags, most passengers are allowed to carry up to two items. According to the airline,

“If you have more than two pieces of hand baggage, or they’re over the permitted size , you may have to put your larger bags into the hold as checked baggage.”

Putting the carry-on bags in the luggage hold also means extra cost per piece.

Baggage allowance on partner airlines

Varies based on the flight number.

British Airways’ baggage policy on partner airlines varies based on the ticket type, the longest flight in the itinerary, and the first airline the passenger checks in to.

According to the airline,

“If your flight number begins with anything other than ‘BA’ (e.g. AA123456X), you’re flying with one of our partners and your baggage allowances may be different. If a journey with connecting flights includes ‘BA’ and other airline codes, your baggage allowance is generally determined by the airline that operates the longest flight in your itinerary.”

British Airways Is Now Letting American Express Cardholders Earn Tier Points On Spending

British Airways recommends passengers on partner airlines to check with the airline operating the first and/or the longest leg of the journey to avoid any confusion.

British Airways' Baggage Allowance: 5 Things You Need To Know

British Airways Baggage and Carry-on

What is the carry-on allowance on british airways flights.

On British Airways flights, the free hand baggage allowance is one piece of hand baggage plus one handbag or laptop . Size and weight restrictions apply.

On occasion, due to the aircraft stowage capacity, British Airways may ask passengers to check some or all of their hand baggage at the boarding gate. If the baggage is within the carry-on allowance, extra baggage charges will not apply.

What is British Airways’ policy on checked baggage allowance?

The checked baggage allowance (number of pieces and weight) varies depending on the class of travel, route, and ticket type booked . When traveling in more than one cabin, the allowance for that cabin will apply for each flight .

Any bag that exceeds the maximum weight of 32 kg (70 lbs) , except for musical instruments weighing less than 45 kg (99 lbs), provided that advance arrangements have been made, will not be accepted and must be shipped separately as freight or cargo .

Can I check baggage for connecting flights?

Provided your journey is on the same ticket, your baggage will be checked to your final destination. When a change of airports is required for your connecting flight, your baggage will not be checked to your final destination. If you are traveling on separate tickets, British Airways will check your baggage to your final destination if all flights are operated by oneworld airlines booked under the same booking reference .

When traveling to some countries, passengers are required to clear customs at the first point of entry. That means baggage must be collected upon arrival, even if it is checked to the final destination, cleared through customs, and handed back to an airline representative for the next flight.

Carry-on (Hand Baggage)

British Airways imposes the following restrictions for the hand baggage allowance:

  • The maximum weight allowed is 23 kg (51 lbs) per bag , but you must be able to lift the bag into the overhead bin without assistance.
  • Maximum size allowed,  including the  handle, pockets,  and wheels, for the main piece is 56 x 45 x 25 cm (22 x 18 x 10 in) . The bag must fit into the bag gauge (available at the check-in area) .
  • Maximum size allowed,  including  the  handle  and  pockets,   for the handbag or laptop is 40 x 30 x 15 cm (16 x 12 x 6 in) , except on flights to/from Brazil 45 x 36 x 20 cm (18 x 14 x 8 in) . The handbag or laptop must fit under the seat in front of you.

Hand baggage that does not meet the above restrictions will be checked and will count toward the checked baggage allowance. You will be charged for extra baggage at the airport rate if your checked baggage allowance is exceeded, or you are traveling on a Hand Baggage Only fare.

Infants traveling on British Airways flights have a hand baggage allowance of one bag containing items that might be required during the flight , bag that you must be able to lift into the overhead bin without help (max. 23 kg and 56 x 45 x 25 cm) .

The following hand baggage allowances apply on flights operated for British Airways by franchise airlines :

  • Comair   (BA6200-6449)  –   1 carry-on of maximum 7 kg (15 lbs) and 56 x 36 x 23 cm (22 x 14 x 9 in) plus 1 handbag or laptop bag of maximum 7 kg (15 lbs) and 45 x 36 x 20 cm (18 x 14 x 8 in).
  • SUN-AIR of Scandinavia (BA8200-8299) – 1 bag of maximum 6 kg (13 lbs) and 45 x 36 x 20 cm (18 x 14 x 8 in) and 1 handbag/laptop of maximum 6 kg (13 lbs).

When your itinerary includes a flight operated by American Airlines , American Airlines’ allowance on carry-on baggage will apply. You may be required to check your hand baggage as hold baggage, but no charge for excess baggage would be applied in this case. When your itinerary includes flights operated by other airlines, the British Airways baggage allowance may be more generous, and the other airline may charge you for extra baggage.

Hand Baggage Only

The Hand Baggage Only fare must be purchased for both outbound and return flights and cannot be combined with other types of fare . Children and infants may still check a fully collapsible pushchair (stroller) and a car seat. If needed, baggage can be checked for an additional fee (extra baggage charge) .

Checked Baggage

British Airways will carry some of your baggage free of charge. Your checked baggage allowance depends on baggage regulations applying at the time of your flight and will be shown on your ticket, your itinerary and receipt (if you have an electronic ticket), and Manage My Booking.

When your itinerary involves flights operated by British Airways and other airlines (e.g., American Airlines , Iberia , etc.), the following rules apply:

  • If every flight has a BA code, British Airways’ checked baggage allowance applies, even if some or all flights are operated by other airlines (codeshare flights).
  • If every flight has another airline’s code, that airline’s baggage allowance applies.
  • If your flights are a mix of BA and other airline codes, the Most Significant Carrier rule applies (usually the airline operating the longest part of the journey).

Checked Baggage Allowances

The maximum dimensions of a checked bag are 90 x 75 x 43 cm (35.5 x 29.5 x 16 in) , including the handle, pockets, and wheels. Bags that exceed this requirement, but do not exceed the maximum size allowed, can be carried for an additional charge, but British Airways currently waives the oversized bag charge , so you do not pay it. An extra bag charge will apply for bags checked in addition to the baggage allowance. British Airways may apply an overweight baggage charge for bags weighing over 23 kg (51 lbs).

Based on the class of travel and route (see route exceptions below), the general baggage allowances for British Airways flights are:

  • Basic – no allowance.
  • Plus, Plus Flex, Standard – 1 bag up to 23 kg (51 lbs) .
  • 1 bag up to 32 kg (70 lbs) – flights between London and Doha.
  • 2 bags up to 23 kg (51 lbs) each – flights between Europe and Japan; flights to/from Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria; connecting between India and USA/Bermuda/Canada; journeys originating in Saudi Arabia to USA/Bermuda/Canada and return; journeys originating in Kuwait to the British Airways network and return.
  • Premium Economy – World Traveller Plus: 2 bags up to 23 kg (51 lbs) each .
  • Business – Club Europe, Club World: 2 bags up to 32 kg (70 lbs) each .
  • First : 3 bags up to 32 kg (70 lbs) each .

Children (2-11 years) have the same checked baggage allowance as adults . Infants (under 2 years) have a checked baggage allowance of 1 standard-size bag . For both children and infants, one fully collapsible pushchair (stroller) and one car seat can be checked without charge .

In addition to the checked baggage allowance, an unlimited number of mobility aids, for personal use only , can be checked free of charge . There is no weight limit for wheelchairs, but advance notice (at least 24 hours before the flight) is required if the wheelchair exceeds the maximum weight allowed .

Extra Baggage and Overweight Baggage Fees

Extra baggage charges may be paid in advance, online, or at the airport. Online , you can pay to check up to 10 extra bags with the same weight restrictions as your baggage allowance . Extra bags can be purchased for adults and children, but not for infants. Payment for extra bags must be made before check-in . When paid at the airport , extra bags will be charged at a higher rate .

Whenever the maximum weight of bags included in the checked baggage allowance is 23 kg (51 lbs) , the overweight baggage charge of 65 GBP / 75 EUR / 100 USD / 100 CAD per bag will apply at check-in for any bag exceeding this weight .

Waived Baggage Charges

For Executive Club Gold and oneworld Emerald members, British Airways waives the extra bag charge for one additional bag, regardless of class of travel. Executive Club Silver and oneworld Sapphire members have an extra allowance of one additional bag up to 32 kg, but no more than 2 bags free of charge, regardless of the route and class of travel, unless the cabin allowance is greater. These waivers apply for all passengers traveling on the same booking (except special group rate bookings) but do not apply for Basic (hand baggage only) fares.

Heavy bag charges are waived for:

  • Passengers traveling in First and Business (Club World & Club Europe) class.
  • British Airways Executive Club Gold and Silver members and oneworld Emerald and Sapphire members (for everyone in the booking).
  • Mobility aids and essential medical equipment.

Sporting Equipment

Most types of sporting equipment may be transported as part of (but not in addition to) the free checked baggage allowance . All sporting equipment has to meet the size and weight restrictions of the checked baggage allowance. Sporting items over 23 kg may incur an overweight baggage charge. Oversized items up to 190 x 95 x 65 cm (75 x 37 x 25.5 in) incur an additional charge, but British Airways currently waives this charge, so you do not pay it.

Baggage Service

For items lost on a British Airways flight, in a British Airways lounge, or at an airport, you must contact the airport directly .

If you receive your baggage damaged, you must file a missing baggage report in writing immediately and at the latest within 7 days of receiving the baggage. If your baggage is delayed, you must file a missing baggage report in writing within 8 days at the latest of the checked baggage being made available to you .

British Airways’ baggage policy is pretty straightforward for checked-bag allowance. However, its excess baggage policy is less straightforward, with costs dependent on where you’re flying to and from.

Carry-On Allowance

Passengers can bring a personal item and 1 standard carry-on piece for free.

  • Personal item: 16 x 12 x 6 inches (40 x 30 x 15 cm)
  • Standard carry-on: 22 x 18 x 10 inches (56 x 45 x 25 cm)
  • Weight: Up to 50 pounds (23 kg) per item

Lap Infant Carry-On Policy

1 cabin bag is permitted for infant necessities required during the flight.

Strollers that exceed these dimensions will need to be collected at the baggage carousel.

Passengers traveling with a child may also bring an additional item, such as a car seat or travel cot. Infants under 2 are permitted to bring 1 piece of checked luggage with the same size and weight restrictions as the ticketed adult’s bag. This does not apply to passengers traveling on a Basic Economy fare.

Checked Baggage Allowance

  • Up to 50 pounds (23 kg) for Euro Traveller and World Traveller Plus

British Airways has a fleet of over 260 planes made up of 12 aircraft types, making BA’s fleet one of the most modern fleets in the world. The fleet of Boeing 747, known as “The Queen of the Skies,” was retired in July 2020.

We’ve included seating specs below for some of its most common planes, but you can view the full fleet here .

British Airways Customer Satisfaction

British Airways’ customer satisfaction has sadly tailed off in recent years, with stiff competition from low-cost carriers for its short-haul routes and competitively-priced Middle East airlines for long-haul flights.

Historically hailed as the “World’s Favorite Airline,” this doesn’t appear to be the case anymore, with customers taking to social media to voice their disappointment. These complaints are widespread and varied, covering lost baggage, poor customer service, decreased value, delays, and refund issues. Passengers have also voiced that BA seems to be unresponsive to comments on its social media channels, which simply causes more frustration.

Customers were not pleased with the 2017 changes to stop offering free food on short-haul flights. However, BA has formed a partnership with the much-loved British retailer, Marks & Spencer, to try to offset the displeasure of paying for food by offering such a reputable brand for purchase.

There is some good news on the horizon! BA is working through several aircraft refurbishments, and with the retirement of the older Boeing 747s, it looks like it is taking note of customer complaints about tired and outdated aircraft.

Safety and Performance

British Airways has a 7 of 7 safety record, as awarded by AirlineRatings.com . This rating takes into account whether the airline has an IATA Operational Safety Audit Certification, in addition to government and crash records combined with information from the world’s aviation governing body.

Charity Partnership

British Airways Flying Start

In 2010, British Airways partnered with Comic Relief to establish the Flying Start program that collects unwanted currency from customers and donates it to many Comic Relief projects around the world. To date, the project has raised over £24 million (~$32 million).

BA also donates to disaster relief projects and flies volunteers and aid workers to relief locations on chartered flights.

Final Thoughts

With its extensive route offering, preferred time slots at major airports, and professionalism, BA is still many passenger’s choice of airline. Greater competition across its route network has kept BA’s prices from soaring sky-high, with ongoing price wars between BA and Virgin Atlantic, in particular on transatlantic routes.

Now also heavily competing with low-cost carriers in the European market , BA has taken a risk changing up its business model when it had such an established reputation, and although it is striving to regain that respect, it’s not changing quickly enough for customers.

Even with the customer dissatisfaction, we acknowledge that BA offers great routes internationally, including its popular London-JFK route among business travelers, with many additional connecting short-haul flights to all major European cities.

Which European airlines have the strictest carry-on baggage requirements?

Aaron Hurd

With all the baggage-handling issues facing airlines this year, it's no surprise that more passengers are opting to fly hand luggage only.

Only, cramming all one's round-the-worldly belongings into a single bag can too easily become a high-stakes game of suitcase Tetris. The penalty for losing: a potentially hefty "heavy-bag" charge, and/or a long wait by the luggage carousel at the other end.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

On top of that, there is no one-size-fits-all rule for airlines - each one has a different policy, and they vary hugely from carrier to carrier.

It helps to be prepared. So how much luggage are you actually allowed to carry in the cabin, and how strictly do airlines enforce their policies?

British Airways

euro traveller ba baggage allowance

British Airways is by far the most generous of all the airlines we looked at, allowing a hernia-inducing 46kg of cabin bag per passenger. It must, however, be divided into two bags - a handbag of up to 23kg and a cabin bag of up to 23kg (the latter is subject to space in the overhead lockers and will be put in the hold if full).

And even if your two bags do combine to outweigh a well-nourished teenage boy, BA won't kick you off the flight - you'll just have to pay a "heavy bag charge" of £65.

Related: Deal alert: 7 nights in Orlando for less than £500pp with BA's September sale

"British Airways' 23kg baggage weight limit applies to each bag and can't be split between multiple bags," the airline says. "Bags over 32kg won't be accepted as checked baggage."

One reader, who is also a BA employee, said: "Both from my time at the airport and working as Cabin Crew, we quite often have times on flights where we run out of locker space — or people bring bags that are too big to fit in the locker regardless. This then causes delays. So I'd say don't push the rules too much, but BA aren't super strict."

Virgin Atlantic

euro traveller ba baggage allowance

Another generous airline in the hand-luggage stakes is Virgin Atlantic, on whose planes travellers can carry one bag of up to 10kg in the Economy and Premium cabins and two bags weighing no more than 12kg for one bag, or 16kg combined. So for example, you could take a 12kg bag and another little bag of 4kg, the airline says.

And whichever cabin you're in, the size of your bag needs to be a maximum of 23 x 36 x 56cm (or around 9 x 14 x 22 inches).

Related: 4 great hacks to make air travel easier

You are also allowed a "handbag, small backpack/rucksack, pocketbook or purse, as you would normally use it (in other words, not just being used to contain items that would otherwise be regarded as baggage)".

"Any children aged 2+ years are entitled to the same amount of hand baggage as an adult in the cabin allowances shown above," Virgin Atlantic adds.

For those travelling with children, only certain types foldable buggies are permitted in the cabin with you as your hand baggage. See the website for details .

A Virgin Atlantic spokesperson told us: "Virgin Atlantic has an auditable hand baggage sizer that ensures all bags are compliant. In terms of weight, passengers checking in at the airport, will have their bags weighed at check-in.

"If passengers check-in online and head straight to the gate a Virgin Atlantic agent will review and check the customer's bag."

If you're travelling on an SAS Go Smart, SAS Plus or a SAS Business ticket, you may bring a carry-on bag on board weighing no more than 8kg (55 x 40 x 23cm). That's on top of "a small handbag or laptop or similar" that must fit under the seat in front of you.

But be warned: as one Points Guy reader warned, the Scandinavian carrier is a stickler for correctly-weighted hand luggage.

"SAS is notorious for weighing baggage at the gate at LHR T2, after scanning the boarding pass, even in SAS Plus," said the self-described SAS regular, who asked not to be named. "I experienced this very issue last week when my wife and I travelled in SAS Plus from London to Stockholm and my bag was just overweight. Whilst I could have put a few items into my wife's bag as it weighed a lot less, the gate personnel would not allow me to do so and insisted on gate-checking my bag."

euro traveller ba baggage allowance

Ryanair doesn't allow much. Which is to say, you can bring a backpack or small bag on board for free, so long as it fits under the seat in front of you, but that's it. Unless you pay extra for a maximum 10kg wheelie bag (no more than 55 x 40 x 20cm) to go in the overhead locker.

Prices for carrying an extra bag begin at €6 (£5.18).

Related: Deal alert: Ryanair adds one million extra seats this winter from £9.99 one-way

And according to the experience of a number of TPG readers, these rules are not for bending. "Ryanair are so strict at making sure your hand luggage fits in their box checker thing [that] I've been on flights where they have checked the size of bags for a second time at the gate," said one reader.

They added: "I've literally seen a woman have to dump some of her clothes in the bin as they told her her bag was too big just as she was about to board."

Another said he bought a Barcelona football in Alicante as a souvenir for his son, only to be told by "over-zealous" staff that it would have to go inside his backpack. If it didn't fit, he claims he was offered the option of paying a fee or leave it behind. "We left it behind and were far from happy with the total lack of empathy and the attitude," he added.

euro traveller ba baggage allowance

A little more generous than Ryanair, easyJet allows carry-on bags of up to 15kg, no more than 45 x 36 x 20cm.

You can also bring on a "large cabin bag" weighing no more than 15kg in addition (max. 56 x 45 x 25cm), but for that, you must book an Up Front or Extra Legroom seat or pay extra to add a large cabin bag to your booking.

Easyjet says prices start from £5.99 to book a large cabin bag. If you'd prefer to select an Up Front or Extra Legroom seat which includes a large cabin bag, prices start from £7.99. Both options also include Speedy Boarding.

One reader, Craig Pollard, told us the reality is that paying for extra bags can in fact cost significantly more than that when he realised his carry-on bag exceeded the maximum size allowance. "My usual carry-on would have attracted a cost of £31.99 each way to go in the overhead storage compartment," he said.

He added: "With hold bags now £47.99 per case each way I opted not to spend close to an extra £200 just in luggage fees for the return trip."

He says it worked out cheaper to buy his family new bags that all fit easyJet's accepted size allocation. "This meant we had three bags in the cabin with us instead of one," he added. "I'm not sure that was the intention of easyJet's new policy."

An easyJet spokesperson said: "easyJet allows customers' cabin bags to weigh up to 15kgs which is one of the most generous in the industry. This means that customers can bring everything they need for their trip and is sufficient for the vast majority of customers. We don't routinely weigh customers' cabin bags but do require them to be able to lift their luggage into the overhead lockers without assistance."

euro traveller ba baggage allowance

Eurowings allows one small cabin bag in all classes as well as one large cabin bag weighing up to 8kg in SMART class, and two items of hand baggage (also up to 8kg). If you want an extra 8kg bag on the Basic economy tariff, you'll need to pay €15 (£13).

The German-owned Lufthansa subsidiary, though, is strict on these rules.

"They force you to check your hand luggage otherwise you have to pay €50 per piece," claimed one TPG reader. It is worth highlighting that Eurowings says prices to upgrade your baggage allowance start at €15, so how much depends on a range of factors, including when and where you fly.

A Eurowings spokesperson said: "In order to avoid any delays due to baggage Eurowings set up clear baggage regulations. Eurowings regularly checks the hand baggage by size with a baggage sizer which is located at every gate as the size is more important to us than the weight.

"The weight is checked at the check-in counter and at the gate – so it's more about which bag seems to be really heavy. As is also the case with other airlines if the bag is too big or the customer did not have the hand baggage included in his fare or did not purchase it in advance the customer has to pay the €50."

You can bring a 10kg carry-on bag no larger than 56cm x 45cm x 25cm on all Jet2 flights. You can also bring "a small, personal item on board (such as a handbag, laptop bag or airport purchase), as long as it is placed underneath the seat in front of you."

Related: EasyJet 'refused' to let this passenger board a flight because of her smart bag. Do other airlines allow it?

However, Jet2 appends the following caveat: "All hand luggage is carried in the cabin at our discretion, and we reserve the right to check it into the aircraft hold for operational or capacity reasons."

You can take one piece of hand luggage per person (excluding infants) weighing up to 10kg and with maximum dimensions of 55 x 40 x 20cm on a TUI Airways flight, the airline says. Plus, you can bring a personal item, like a small bag, that must fit under the seat in front of you.

It adds: "You must be able to lift your hand luggage into the overhead storage compartments yourself."

According to the operator's website, there appear to be no add-ons, no exceptions.

A spokesperson for the airline told us: "The vast majority of our customers are travelling on package holidays so are travelling with hold baggage and therefore go to the check-in desks. We have relatively few customers that go straight to the gate. Therefore, hand baggage is controlled during the check-in processes.

"Any bags that appear too large or too heavy are checked or weighed. We also have a very flexible approach to hold allowance, allowing customers to pool their allowance with all members on the booking, as well as allowing customers to spread their hold allowance over multiple items."

Aer Lingus allows one 10kg carry-on bag so long as you've pre-booked it with your ticket for an extra £5.99.

To do that, go to your booking section on Aer Lingus' website and select "Carry-on bag with priority boarding".

Related: The best (and worst) airlines for delays in the UK last year

It adds, without further details: "A small personal item (handbag or laptop bag) is still included for all customers."

A spokesperson told us: "Cabin bags may be inspected at the boarding gate to ensure they comply with the specified allowance."

The spokesperson pointed out that the following customers have the option of a 10kg carry-on bag, in addition to one small on-board bag, included for free in their fare type:

  • Silver, Platinum and Concierge AerClub members;
  • Plus, Advantage and AerSpace fare types;
  • An accompanying adult travelling with an infant;
  • Customers connecting to/from an Aer Lingus transatlantic flight.

Wizz Air allows one 10kg carry-on bag for free (max. 40 x 30 x 20 cm), plus another "trolley bag" (55 x 40 x 23 cm) if you book Wizz Priority.

How much Wizz Priority costs, however, is unclear. The airline, rather opaquely, says it costs anywhere between ‎€5.00 (£4.30) and ‎€40.00 (£34.50) if you buy online or through the Wizz Air Call Centre, and ‎€25.00 if you buy the service at the airport.

The price is calculated depending on your destination and which season (low or peak) you fly.

euro traveller ba baggage allowance

Air France keeps things simple. You're allowed a personal item (handbag etc) and one piece of carry-on luggage. It's weight depends on your cabin.

"If you are travelling in the Economy cabin, your hand baggage and personal item cannot exceed 12 kg/26.4 lbs. If you're travelling in the Premium Economy, Business or La Première cabins, the combined weight of your hand baggage items and accessory must not exceed 18 kg/40 lb. Your travel cabin is shown on your ticket."

Related: Your complete guide to Oneworld alliance benefits

You must place your personal item in the seat in front of you unless you are seated in an exit row, in which case your personal item must be stored in the overhead compartment.

Jackets, coats, umbrellas, duty-free items and children's accessories (acceptably sized strollers, car seats, nappy bags etc) are not considered personal items or hand luggage and can be brought on board.

Lufthansa has a handy baggage calculator on its website, where you input your destination and it tells you what you can bring on board.

A trip from London to Frankfurt, for example, allows:

Economy: One carry-on bag up to 8kg (max. 55 x 40 x 23cm) and one personal item (40 x 30 x 10cm)

Business: two carry-on bags, each up to 8kg (max. 55 x 40 x 23cm) and one personal item (40 x 30 x 10cm)

Note: A trolley, foldable clothes bag or a foldable pushchair (max. 57 x 54 x 15 cm) counts as carry-on baggage. Foldable pushchairs must be collapsed and no longer look like a pushchair.

A spokesperson said: "Of course, our staff at the gate do check these allowances, either by sight or even with a balance and a metal frame to check the size of the baggage. In addition, they make announcements at the gate before boarding to ask passengers with heavier bags to check them in. On our website, we also inform to reduce carry-on baggage to the maximum in order to speed up the security check, where all these items need to be checked and x-rayed."

The Points Guy has contacted all the airlines mentioned in this article for comment.

Bottom line

While it can be frustrating to arrive at the airport and be told by your airline that you must either pay extra to carry your bag on board or stow it in the hold, it's always best to stick to the rules.

Be sure to check the exact baggage allowance on the airline you're travelling with, and if you're unsure whether your bag will exceed the maximum weight, you can buy luggage scales online for as little as £10.

As always with air travel, never take an airline's rules for granted - the consequences can be expensive and unavoidable, no matter how arbitrary they may sometimes seem.
