The team were lovely and very informed, the coach was comfortable as was the driving. It was disappointing that the cable car ride was substituted for a very basic 'train' ride to an average lookout on the side of a golf course with a 5 star hotel to look at (the Beverly Hills of Zurich the guide endlessly repeated), if the dates the cable car were being 'maintained' were shared on the tour information prior to booking that would be managed expectations, I would strongly recommend looking up the cable car website and finding out the 'maintenance period', I did this during the tour and it was very clearly out of action for most of March - my fault I guess for not thoroughly investigating prior to booking. Our tour was supposed to be an English speaking one however they blended us with another group so the poor guide had to say everything twice, it felt like things took twice as long and must have been exhausting for her. The 'ferry ride' was a 10min car ferry crossing...the one highlight was the unscheduled Lindt Factory visit, quick enough for some photos and shopping... I have done quite a few of these 'best of tours' throughout Europe over the past couple of weeks, this was not the best, but it wasn't terrible. Read more Written March 18, 2024

He gave great information about Switzerland throughout the tour. The only feedback I would share is that I wish we were able to spend more time at Interlaken and less time at the Jungfraujoch Top of Europe. Interlaken was gorgeous and the Jungfraujoch is beautiful on the way up the mountain and in the way down however, the actual stopping point on the mountain is very touristy and crowded. The amount of people made it hard to enjoy all it had to offer. I would switch the amount of time spent at Interlaken and the Jungfraujoch. Read more Written September 24, 2023

Train rides were nice. The guide use for mostly to make sure we got on the right trains, else no use of a guide. While the trip was great, it was a little rushed; not much time to eat at the beautiful restaurant that is on the 2nd floor; did not get much time to explore and take pictures at places like Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen. The entire trip is really to be at Jungfrau. I would do this again, but perhaps not leverage a tour and do it on your own. Read more Written August 3, 2023

Zurich Day Trip to Mount Pilatus and Lucerne

Lucerne Bridge over the water

Whenever most people think of Switzerland, the first things that come to mind are Swiss cheese, snow-capped mountains, and gorgeous mountain lakes. We hit the jackpot with our day trip to Mount Pilatus and Lucerne from Zurich. That journey has it all, every Swiss icon you could imagine!

So, if you’ve been wondering how to visit Mt Pilatus from Zurich or Lucerne yourself, read on. In this article, I’ll tell you how we did it so you can plan your own trip. I’ll include tips and links to tours and other useful sites along the way.

Getting to Lucerne from Zurich

Switzerland has a very efficient train service, which runs throughout the country. Between the trains and the trams, it’s easy to plan your entire Switzerland itinerary just using public transportation. And that’s what Dan and I did. Buying our train tickets online before our trip was not only more convenient, but it also made budgeting easier.

Speaking of budgeting, I should mention the sticker shock we experienced. Have you heard that Switzerland is expensive? Well, yeah. We spent almost $20 for two small coffees and two chocolate croissants near the train station!

But despite all that, the train ride from Zurich to Lucerne is beautiful, and we enjoyed dozens of photo-worthy views along the way.

Looking at the Alps as we rode, we were excited for the day. Even though we were riding to Lucerne, our first destination would be Mount Pilatus. Although it was for a practical reason: Many mountain ranges are covered in clouds as the day wears on. No point in risking a poor view, right?

A Day Trip From Zurich to Mount Pilatus in Lucerne

Why take a day trip to Mount Pilatus?

To be honest, there are quite a few excellent reasons to visit Mount Pilatus. That’s why it’s such a popular day trip from Zurich and Lucerne.

1. It’s beautiful.

If you’re looking for an opportunity to immerse yourself in Switzerland’s natural beauty, you’ll find it here. The journey to the peak brings breathtaking alpine landscapes, featuring soaring peaks, pristine lakes, and verdant meadows. The panoramic views from the summit are truly awe-inspiring and provide an opportunity to immerse yourself in Switzerland’s natural beauty.

2. It’s easy to get to.

Mount Pilatus is easily accessible from Lucerne. You can take a short boat ride across Lake Lucerne, followed by a scenic cogwheel train journey up to the summit. The journey itself is part of the experience thanks to the picturesque surroundings.

3. You can ride the World’s Steepest Cogwheel Railway.

Mount Pilatus is home to the steepest cogwheel railway in the world, which provides an exhilarating ride up the mountain. Riding this iconic railway is a thrilling and memorable experience, allowing you to appreciate the engineering marvel and enjoy the stunning scenery along the way.

4. There are a lot of outdoor activities.

There’s no end of things to do on Mount Pilatus; it’s a dream destination for outdoor lovers. In summer, you have children’s playgrounds, hiking trails at varying difficulty levels, a summer toboggan run, a rope park, zip-line glider, and the opportunity to go paragliding from the summit.

Winter brings opportunities for skiing, snowboarding, and sledding. And year-round, you can dine at one of the cafes, shop for souvenirs, and enjoy the scenery from the Observation Deck. You could easily spend an entire day on Mt. Pilatus and only get a taste of what the mountain has for you.

5. Pilatus Kulm is there.

At the summit of Mount Pilatus, you’ll find Pilatus-Kulm, a mountaintop hotel with restaurants, a terrace, and viewing platforms. You can relax and savor a delicious apple strudel and hot chocolate as we did, or enjoy a full meal while taking in the panoramic views.

The Kulm also offers overnight accommodation too, which will let you witness some magical sunsets, sunrises, clouds, and the Milky Way during your stay.

6. The mountain has a rich cultural and historical significance.

One of the most enduring legends associated with Mount Pilatus is that it was once home to fearsome dragons. These weren’t just ordinary dragons, either; they were healing ones possessing magical powers. It was believed that the mere sight of these dragons could heal the observer or bring good luck. There are tales of encounters with these dragons dating back to the 15th century.

According to another local legend, Mount Pilatus in Switzerland is the burial site of Pontius Pilate, the Roman official who oversaw Jesus’s trial. It’s believed that his spirit emerges from a lake on the mountain each Good Friday, triggering storms.

True or not, Pilatus is a beautiful mountain in its own right. Aside from the many activities on it slopes, on a clear day the mountain offers a panoramic view of 73 Alpine peaks. Not surprising, I suppose, considering its impressive height: Mount Pilatus is well over 2,100 meters (7,000 feet) high.

So, how do you get there?

A zip-line is available at Mount Pilatus.

How to get from Lucerne to Mount Pilatus

There are 6 ways to travel from Lucerne to Mt Pilatus: by bus, boat, train, Uber, taxi, or car. But that only gets you to the base of the mountain.

Depending on how you choose to arrive, you’ll climb the mountain by either the cogwheel train or a panorama gondola – cable car combination.

ⓘ PRO TIP: The gondola and cogwheel railway do not run year-round. This site has the schedules and timetables for both.

The bus is the fastest and cheapest way to visit Mount Pilatus. From Lucerne train station, take Bus no.1 to Kriens (“Kriens, Zentrum Pilatus” bus stop). Walk to the cable car station (5 minutes), and then take a cable car to the top of Mt Pilatus (Pilatus Kulm).

Lucerne to Mt Pilatus by boat. Take a boat from Pier 2 at the Lucerne Boat Station, to Alpnachstad. Disembark in Alpnachstad and board the Pilatusbahn (Pilatus Railway) cogwheel train to the top. The entire journey takes about 90 minutes.

From Lucerne to Pilatus by train. Take the train S5 from Lucerne main station to Alpnachstad Railway Station. Then take the cogwheel train to the top.

Taxi to Pilatus from Lucerne. According to Rome2Rio , taking a taxi from Lucerne Station to Pilatus Kulm costs 110 – 140 Swiss Francs per trip. It takes about 45 minutes to drive there from Lucerne.

Luzern to Mt Pilatus by Uber. I used the Uber Estimator tool to calculate the cost of a journey from Lucerne to Kriens. Prices begin at CHF 21-25 per ride, depending on the type of car you request.

Rental car. If you want more flexibility, use this website to find the cost to rent a car for a day. Remember, you’ll have to park at the base of the mountain.

ⓘ PRO TIP: Find transportation schedules here . Also, double-check departure times before you leave. Things can change depending on the season and weather conditions.

Golden Round Trip from Lucerne to Pilatus

Indeed, while the term “ultimate” may be commonplace, it’s hard to find a more fitting word for the Golden Round Trip . This isn’t just a day trip from Lucerne. It’s a full-circle, unforgettable voyage that will leave you with lifelong memories.

This unique excursion is a symphony of transport modes, each offering a unique perspective of Switzerland’s stunning landscapes. It starts with a leisurely cruise across the tranquil Lake Lucerne, followed by a thrilling ascent on the world’s steepest cogwheel train up to the summit of Mount Pilatus.

But the adventure doesn’t stop there. Your descent begins with an aerial cableway ride, offering panoramic views that seem straight out of a postcard, and concludes with a picturesque gondola ride back to Lucerne.

We need to mention though, that the comprehensive Golden Round Trip is exclusively offered from May until October. To avoid disappointment, book your tickets beforehand, because it frequently sells out during the peak tourist season.

Between the views and the transportation, it’s definitely worth the time and cost. And if you’re not a fan of boats, there’s also a Silver Round Trip that gets you there by train instead.

Highlights from visiting Mount Pilatus

Here are some of the things we enjoyed the most during our visit.

Mt. Pilatus gondola

Gondola ride to the top of Mount Pilatus

The gondola to the top of Mount Pilatus leaves from the town of Kriens. To get there, you can take either a bus or a train to Kriens from Lucerne. Conveniently, Lucerne’s bus and train stations are right next to each other.

We thought it might be fun to see the little towns along the way, so we chose to take the bus, rather than the train. It’s only a 15-minute ride. You take bus line 1 to the bus stop called “Kriens, Zentrum Pilatus,” then follow the signs to the gondola ticket office.

There, you’ll buy a ticket for the Mount Pilatus gondola and enjoy the ride to the summit.

The gondola does not go nonstop to the top. Expect a couple of rides and transfers due to the mountain’s topography.

The first part is a four person gondola ride from the ticket booth to Fräkmüntegg. The 20-minute trip is filled with beautiful views, and you can see the city and lake in the distance.

Riding the gondola to the top of Mt. Pilatus

We heard these cow bells all the way up on the gondola.

That 20-minute gondola ride was a surreal experience. We could see local farms and hear a bell tinkle on the occasional Swiss cow as we rose. Iconic, right? Enchanting houses that could have been straight out of Heidi begged to be photographed, but we passed them by too quickly to catch them.

At least Dan grabbed a photo of a belled cow in someone’s yard. Such a memento.

Our gondola stopped at Fräkmüntegg to disgorge all its passengers and return those waiting to the base of the mountain. If you’re traveling with children, be warned. There are so many fun things to do here that they might not want to continue on. (You can find a list of all the activities here. )

Everyone changes to a different kind of cable car for the steep, final leg of the journey. It’s known as the Dragon Ride — an aerial cable car from Fräkmüntegg to Pilatus Kulm. Lots of passengers can fit into this huge cable car, and the ride only lasts for 3 or 4 minutes.

ⓘ PHOTO TIP: Try to stand close to the windows, if you can. The best views can be had at the back left side as you’re heading up (or the right front side of the gondola when going down).

At the summit of Mount Pilatus

view from Mount Pilatus goes all the way to the horizon. On the ground, low mountains just up around a large lake

When the cable car spit us out, we found ourselves in the Visitor Center between the mountain’s two pinnacles, complete with a restaurant and shops. Not in the market for souvenirs, we headed outside onto the large concrete viewing platform, a historic hotel, and some paths for any visitors who wanted to take a walk.

A variety of trails run along the mountain top. With no clue where any of them went, we chose one that looked like it went to the highest point. The rock steps were steep and narrow enough in spots to require turning sideways to pass those on the way down. Thank goodness the path had places to rest, because it’s a workout, especially at such a high altitude!

people climbing up a path on Mt. Pilatus

Unused to such strenuous activity, I took my time going up. This allowed a chance to appreciate the many colorful alpine flowers growing in the crevasses along the way. Anyway, why rush? The journey is part of the fun.

Let me tell you: The spectacular 360-degree view at the top makes the tiring climb worthwhile. Do it! In one direction, we could see miles of sparkling blue lakes and verdant farmland. In another, there were snow-capped mountains, including glacier-topped Mt. Titlis. I’m not sure if all of them were even in Switzerland . We could’ve been looking into another country, for all we knew.

While we stood there, we watched someone riding the thermals with his parachute. His was an even better view than the one we had.

Cogwheel train down from the top of Mt. Pilatus

A train to the top of Mount Pilatus is also available.

The gondola had carried us up one side of the mountain to get to the top, and the unique Pilatus Railway took us down the other. This is the world’s steepest cog railway, reaching as much as a 48 percent gradient. That’s really steep!

Commissioned in 1889, the little train travels between the summit and the Swiss town of Alpnachstad. It’s a scenic 30-minute ride, offering views of dense pine forests, rolling alpine meadows, and craggy rock formations. We were almost sorry when it arrived at the base station, but our Lucerne day trip segment was waiting.

We took the train back from Mt. Pilatus to Lucerne.

Walking tour of Lucerne Switzerland

old

With about 80,000 people, Lucerne is the economic and cultural center of central Switzerland. There are too many things to see in Lucerne to do it all in one day, or even a week. With only a few hours in Lucerne, we focused on walking around the city center and the lake around it.

Looking back, we probably should have taken a guided tour like this one. The price was affordable, plus we would have made it to all of the best things to see in Lucerne. As it was, we saw a lot, but we missed a lot, too.

Switzerland is picturesque, but Lucerne’s Old Town is often considered one of the prettiest in Switzerland.

We really didn’t have any plan or itinerary for Lucerne. Nothing wrong with that, really, but even though each place has its own ambiance, it’s hard to express the spirit of a city in words.

So here are some photos and impressions from Lucerne. Or as the Swiss spell it, Luzern.

a pedestrian bridge with iron railing crosses the river in Lucerne

Lucerne Chapel Bridge

Called the Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke), Lucerne’s wooden covered bridge is probably its best-known sight. Spanning the azure lake and lined with boxes of colorful pansies, it’s also seen more than its share of selfies and Instagram shots.

The 200-meter bridge was originally built in 1333, which makes it the oldest covered bridge in Europe. It’s also the world’s oldest surviving truss bridge.

ⓘ PRO TIP: Make a point to walk across the bridge and look up into the ceiling pediments. You’ll see triangular paintings that depict events from Lucerne’s history. There are 30 paintings that date from the 17th century. Sadly, there used to be many more, but some were destroyed when the bridge caught fire in 1993.

Midway across the bridge, there’s a well-preserved, octagonal stone tower. Also built in the 1300s, it has served as a fortification, a dungeon & a treasury in the years since then.

You can’t climb it, though. Best you can do is visit the gift shop on the ground floor.

Jesuit Church

Built in the late 1600s, the Lucerne Jesuit Church’s claim to fame is that it was Switzerland’s first baroque sacred building. It is one of the most important churches in the city.

Hofkirche St. Leodegar (also called the Court Church of St. Leodegar) is Lucerne’s parish cathedral and is the most important Renaissance church in Switzerland. It dates from the 8th century, when it was founded as a Benedictine monastery.

The original Gothic church was destroyed by fire in 1633. Little survives except for the spires, St. Mary’s altar, and a few religious objects.

Lake Lucerne

With mountains that drop straight into the water, Lake Lucerne seems more like a fjord than a lake. Fed by the Reuss River, this is Switzerland’s fourth-largest lake, and it has plenty to entertain.

Adventurous visitors can hike the 34-km (21-mile) Swiss Path, or bicycle around the lake. Those who prefer something a little more relaxing can feed the swans, go boating, or take a paddlewheel steamer to other spots around the lake.

Beautiful mountain Lake Lucerne in the Swiss Alps.

Though food is always a highlight, sometimes it’s more about where you eat it. Lucerne is a fantastic city that makes great use of its lakefront, and there are plenty of shops and stalls offering many things to eat and drink. To strengthen us for our trip back to Zurich, we chose an economical slice of pizza from a stall and sat by the lake to enjoy it.

Pizza in Switzerland? I hear you ask. Yes, friends. Some things are universal.

Would you visit Mt Pilatus and Lucerne?

Set against the backdrop of a deep blue mountain lake and the Swiss Alps, this is one city that deserves more than the paltry amount of time we were able to give it.

5 Interesting Facts About Switzerland

23 thoughts on “zurich day trip to mount pilatus and lucerne”.

Dan and Linda, Your photos are amazing. We are spending 2 days in Zurich and want to visit Mt. Pilatus. Did you go on a tour or do an independent adventure. We are leaning toward an independent self-guided tour. I almost moved to Lucerne when I was in high school. I am so looking forward to visiting. Thank you.

Thanks, Lorna. Sounds like you are going to have a wonderful trip, and we’re happy you will be able to finally say you’ve been there. (It’s better as an adult, we think.) Take lots of photos and let us know how it went!

I think you can do it on your own and have a fabulous time. We went on our own, without much of a plan, except to see Lucerne’s bridge and Mt. Pilatus. This tour is similar to what we had in mind, but we just took the public buses. The trade-off was that we really didn’t know what to see in Lucerne, or where to go, which wasted some of our time.

Originally, we had hoped to take a scenic boat ride, but our day started late and so we missed the last boat back. Big regret; I think Dan would have gotten some awesome shots while we were on the lake. I guess that’s the advantage of having a tour guide; they can keep you on schedule, lol.

A grear narrative. This story will indeed make many travel lovers make this trip to Lucerne. Thank you so much.

Glad you liked it.

OMG, how gorgeous! Lucerne is definitely on my short list for my Europe trip this summer. Mount Pilatus looks great!

Yes Carly, Lucerne was fantastic. It seems many people have skipped Switzerland for too many reasons and have created a hidden gem in Europe now. Next time we are there we want to see Bern, Geneva and Interlachen.

Oh, how gorgeous are your photos! I have visited Lucerne but only to take a quick trip across the bridge, have lunch and talk a short walk. I am so inspired to return and retrace your day trip. So beautiful !

Well I know you live in France, Annette, so you have the good fortune of being able to do just that. It sounds as though you spent your time in other parts of Switzerland. What would you recommend for our next trip?

I absolutely love any part of Switzerland. Boy, those mountains are gorgeous, aren’t they? Great post!

Thanks, Corinne. Do you have a favorite part of Switzerland?

amazing place!! ^^

Oh, Linda, what a gorgeous trip! You made me really jealous because we’ve spent a day in Lucerne this past spring but didn’t have enough time to go to Mount Pilatus. It looks absolutely spectacular and the weather was perfect. I think I’ll have to go back to Lucerne. It’s such a wonderful city.

I feel that way nearly about every place we visit, Anda, but just when I begin to plan a return visit somewhere, something comes along to tempt me to visit somewhere new.

Your views were phenomenal. I have been to Mount Pilatus but the top was full of clouds and fog (and it was summer). It was a great experience anyway but I would have preferred the sunny skies.

You’re right about the weather, Ruth. Even in summer it can be unpredictable. We were thrilled to have had such good visibility up there. Glad you had a good time anyway.

Switzerland is just stunning! I loved your pictures from the top of the mountain.

Thanks. We were thrilled to have such good weather.

Wow – the views from Mt Pilatus look stunning.

Ooooh my gosh! That scenery is breathtaking! Wish we could be there right NOW! 🙂

Yeah, it is breathtaking, Rob. We’d love to see the rest of Switzerland too.

Nice photos! Lucerne’s a great city — very charismatic, loaded with character.

It really is. We would have liked to see more.

Enjoy time at leisure to grab a snack, to do some souvenir shopping and to stroll through the medieval streets of the well-preserved Old Town.

From Lucerne , drive to Kriens, where you board the panoramic gondolas to Fräkmüntegg. Change for the Dragon Ride aerial cableway and enjoy jaw dropping views out of the panoramic windows, specially designed to give the feeling of flying. Once at the top of Mt Pilatus (2,132 m a.s.l), immerse yourself in the interactive Dragon World experience, venture down the Dragon Trail or opt for a short hike to the summit (weather permitting). Relax on the panorama terrace and admire magnificent views over the surrounding peaks of the Swiss Alps and the blue lakes in the valleys below.

Treat yourself to a typical Swiss lunch at one of the different restaurants. The highlight of the day is a thrilling descent on the world's steepest cogwheel railway (48% gradient) down to Alpnachstad. Board a public boat for a lovely 1-hour cruise on beautiful Lake Lucerne and admire the spectacular landscape from an entirely different angle. End the excursion at the port in Lucerne or enjoy a relaxing coach ride back to Zurich.

Mount Pilatus Cogwheel Train and Cable Car

PILATUS-BAHNEN AG - Hotels & Gastronomie Schlossweg 1 6010 Kriens Phone  +41 (0)41 329 12 12 pilatus.ch

Easily accessible by public transport from Lucerne, Mount Pilatus is the ideal adventure mountain for the entire family.

The world’s steepest cog railway starts its climb at Alpnachstad and tackles a maximum gradient of 48 percent, thereby passing forests, meadows and rock faces. On the north side, a gondola cableway and an aerial cableway connect Kriens to Pilatus Kulm. With the new aerial cableway Dragon Ride, guests are practically flying up to Pilatus. It takes the cableway a mere 3.5 minutes to reach Pilatus (2073 m a.s.l.) from the intermediate station Fräkmüntegg (1416 m a.s.l.). Thanks to spacious seating, a cockpit-like structure and large windows, the cableway offers a unique view of Lucerne and its lake.

General Information

Where is mt. pilatus located.

Mount Pilatus in Lucerne

Mount Pilatus is located in central Switzerland, southwest of Lucerne. The mountain massif stretches through the canton of Lucerne, but also through the half-cantons of Obwalden and Nidwalden.

The History of Mount Pilatus

Mount Pilatus

Mount Pilatus has a very interesting history, which is one of the main things that attracts so many tourists. For one, there’s a folk legend that a dragon with healing powers used to live on the mountain. There are also three very different tales about the mountain’s name.

One claims that the mountain is named after Pontius Pilate who is buried there. Another says that the mountain resembles the belly of Pilate lying on his back, who is a very large man. And a third legend (which is the most plausible one) states that the name is derived from the word “pileatus”, which means “cloud-topped”.

The cogwheel railway to the summit opened in 1889, so Pilatus has been attracting visitors ever since the late 19th century. Some of the most famous people to have ascended the summit of this majestic mountain include Queen Victoria, Conrad Gessner, and Theodore Roosevelt.

How to Get To Mt. Pilatus

Pilatus Kulm is easily accessible by either a cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad or a cable car from Kriens . Those are the two main towns from which you can travel to the top of the mountain, and I’m about to tell you how you can easily travel to either of the two towns.

From Lucerne

Lucerne

Lucerne is the closest city to Mount Pilatus with a few different routes to the summit.

If you have a car in Switzerland, driving to Kriens or Alpnachstad is much faster than train, bus, or boat. It’s only 10 minutes to Kriens, and most of that time will be spent on getting out of Lucerne. There’s a parking lot near the bottom station of the gondola lift.

It’s 15 minutes from the city to Alpnachstad, and parking is available at the Mount Pilatus railway station.

By Public Transportation

Pilatus railway

There are two main ways to reach Mount Pilatus from Lucerne – either via the gondola from Kriens or the cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad. Let’s start with Kriens.

You can take a bus departing from the train station in Lucerne towards Obernau, Dorf. It will take you to the center of Kriens, from where it’s about a five-minute walk to the bottom station of the Mount Pilatus gondola . The gondola ride is about half an hour long, so in total it should take you about an hour to reach Mt. Pilatus from Lucerne via Kriens.

Traveling via Alpnachstad is a little bit quicker. You can take a train from Lucerne to Alpnachstad (just under 20 minutes), and it will take you directly to the bottom station of the Pilatus Railway . Then it’s another half an hour to the top of the mountain, so you could be at Mount Pilatus in under an hour if you don’t have to wait for the train too long.

There’s another option that is doubtless slower, much more fun, and only available in the summer. You could take a ferry from Lucerne to Alpnachstad and cruise on the lake, admiring the views of Mt Pilatus as you come closer. The boat ride is about an hour and ten minutes, and it’s a wonderful experience.

Mt. Pilatus Golden Round Trip

Boat on Lake Lucerne

The Golden Round Trip is a great option if you want to thoroughly explore the region, but keep in mind that it’s not something you can do in the winter because it includes a cruise from Lucerne to Alpnachstad. This tour of Mount Pilatus is available only from June to October.

You get to ride on the cogwheel train from Alpnachstad to Mount Pilatus, then on an aerial cableway from Pilatus Kulm to Fräkmüntegg, on a gondola lift from Fräkmüntegg to Kriens, and finally on a bus back to Lucerne.

Tickets are 111.60 CHF for second-class, and you can get a 50% discount with the half-fare card. It’s worth noting that the choice of class matters only for the boat ride; on all other modes of transport, there’s only one class.

Mt. Pilatus Silver Round Trip

The Silver Round Trip is very similar to the Golden Round Trip, and there’s really only one difference – instead of cruising to Alpnachstad on a boat, you ride a train from Lucerne. Everything else is the same, including the fact that the choice of class is relevant only for the journey from Lucerne to Alpnachstad.

You can do the Silver Round Trip any time of the year, and it’s pretty much your only option if you’re planning to do this as a winter trip. The ticket prices are 89.40 CHF for second class and 94.80 CHF for first class, and discounts are available with various travel passes.

From Zurich

best hotels zurich near train station

Traveling to Mount Pilatus from Zurich is possible, and only takes 40 minutes longer than the previously mentioned routes. That’s how long it takes for the train from Zurich to reach Lucerne, and from there you can do either the route via Kriens or via Alpnachstad.

Trains run from Zurich to Lucerne every 20-30 minutes, although you might want to check the timetable to make sure you’re getting on the quickest train. The fastest one takes just 40 minutes to travel between the two cities, while the slower options can take more than an hour.

Mount Pilatus Tickets & Prices

Pilatus Alpnachstad tickets

The Mount Pilatus railway offers tickets from Alpnachstad all the way to Kriens, and there are multiple variations of tickets you can buy. This includes passes to the cogwheel railway and the cable cars.

The standard price of a return ticket from Alpnachstad to Pilatus Kulm is 78 CHF, although you can get a bunch of discounts on the price. The price is the same for a single ticket from Alpnachstad to Kriens, and from Kriens to Pilatus Kulm. It’s 58 CHF to travel from Alpnachstad to Frakmuntegg.

Seat reservations are another 5 CHF per person. They are not obligatory but are recommended in the peak season if you want to avoid standing in line and waiting.

If you have any of the Swiss travel passes, you can get some sort of discount on the Mount Pilatus railway tickets. Half-priced tickets are available to anyone with the half-fare card, the GA travel card, the Swiss Travel Pass, and the Interrail pass.

Also, if you have the Swiss Travel Pass, you don’t need to purchase tickets for the Silver/Golden round trip. Most journeys are included with the pass for free, and you just need the tickets for the ascent and descent, which you can get for half the price thanks to the pass.

Another thing to note is that if you want to be guaranteed a seat, you must pay the full price of the reservation fee regardless of any passes you might have.

Children up to the age of 16 do not have to pay full price for the tickets either. There’s a 50% reduction in price for kids aged 6-16, and all kids in possession of the Junior Travelcard of Swiss Travel Pass can travel for free when they are accompanied by adults.

Best Mt. Pilatus Tours

If you’re not someone who enjoys wandering around on your own, consider booking a guided tour of Mount Pilatus . It’s the easiest way of seeing all the top attractions while learning about their history and significance.

Group tours will be more expensive than doing the trip on your own, but they’ll take a lot off your mind. You just pay for the tour once, and someone else takes care of all the tickets, looking through the timetables, and all you have to do is show up and let yourself be guided around.

There are guided tours from both Zurich and Lucerne , and you can even book a guided hiking trip. Most tours will take you on a round trip across the mountain, so you’ll get to see Pilatus Kulm, Frakmuntegg, Krienseregg, Alpnachstad, and Kriens. During the summer, you can also book tours that include a boat ride on Lake Lucerne.

Weather on Mount Pilatus

Mount Pilatus

Mount Pilatus is at an elevation of more than 2,000 meters above sea level, so the climate is much rougher than in the towns on the shore of Lake Lucerne. The average daily highs are rarely above 15 degrees Celsius even in July and August, while the lows are consistently below 10 degrees Celsius throughout the year.

The winter months usually bring sub-zero temperatures to the mountain, and in December, January, and February, the temperatures are rarely above zero degrees Celsius even during the day. There’s a lot of snow on the mountain in the winter, and you will need footwear that allows you to move through a thick layer of snow if you want to be able to get around and explore during a winter trip.

Keep in mind that I’m talking about the average temperatures; there are, of course, exceptions and it could be warmer or colder while you’re there. In September 2023, Mount Pilatus recorded a temperature high of 21 degrees Celsius, which is unusually warm for fall.

It’s perfectly possible for it to be consistently above 20 degrees Celsius when you visit in the summer, I just wouldn’t count on it and would be prepared for colder weather since it is a tall mountain summit and anything can happen.

Best Time to Visit Mount Pilatus

Mount Pilatus

The best time to visit Mount Pilatus generally depends on what you enjoy doing the most, but I really think it’s summer. It’s when everything on the mountain is up and running, you can do one of those beautiful round trips that include a boat ride on Lake Lucerne, and the days are long so all the cable cars and trains run until the evening.

The hiking trails, adventure park, and rope course are all open, as well as all the restaurants and hotels. You can explore the mountain in a T-shirt or even just lounge in the field, soaking up the sun.

Winter is a fun time to be on the mountain if you enjoy sledding, winter hiking, and similar activities, but keep in mind that you won’t be able to explore as much of the mountain. Many hiking trails become inaccessible in the winter because of snowfall, plus the train and cable car will stop running much earlier in the day.

Also, there are fewer things to do because it’s so cold. If you’re in the area in the winter and thinking about doing a quick day trip to Mount Pilatus, it’s certainly a good idea, especially if you’re lucky enough to be able to visit during the Christmas Market. But if you’re planning a trip to Mt. Pilatus specifically and you want to do it at the best possible time, I would highly recommend going in the summer, maybe even late September.

Summer Activities on Mt. Pilatus

Hiking at Mount Pilatus

Hiking is the most popular activity on Mount Pilatus and it can keep you busy for days. The mountain has many trails that range from easy and accessible to anyone, to very challenging and suitable only for the most experienced hikers.

Something most of these trails have in common (except for those that are mostly through the forest) is stunning panoramic views of Lake Lucerne and its surroundings. One thing to note is that, in the summer, it is perfectly possible to hike up to Mount Pilatus from the towns at its foothills.

You don’t have to ride the cable cars or trains if you don’t want to, and you can just hike to the summit instead. It takes at least 3 hours depending on your starting point, and it’s generally easier to ascend Pilatus from Kriens.

Mt. Pilatus Rope Park

Adventure park at Mount Pilatus

Head to the adventure park near the Fräkmüntegg station if you want to have loads of fun on Mount Pilatus. The park features an obstacle course through the trees, a Dragon Glider rope course, and a long rope bridge.

Overall it’s a very fun course, perfect for active adults who enjoy running around and jumping. Most parts of the course are suitable for teenagers, although it’s not really recommended for children. There’s an entirely different playground for them that’s equally fun, but much more suitable for the younger ages.

Summer Toboggan Run

Fräkigaudi Toboggan is a summertime activity at Fräkmüntegg. The run is 1,350 meters long, which makes it the longest summer toboggan in entire Switzerland, so it’s an absolute must for adrenaline junkies.

The ride is fun and exciting, and you get to enjoy stunning views while you’re rushing down the mountain. It’s even suitable for children, so it’s a thing the entire family can enjoy. Ticket prices are just 9 CHF for adults and 5 CHF for kids, and children who are between 2 and 5 years old can ride for free if they’re accompanied by an adult.

Dragon Trail

Dragon Trail

The Dragon Trail is a hiking path on Mount Pilatus that got its name from folklore tales. Local legends say that once upon a time a dragon with healing powers lived on this mountain, which features many crooks, and crevices, and even passes through a cave.

The path is easily walkable in the summer and features railings for maximum security. But it’s not always accessible in the winter because of snow and ice, so if you want to see the dragon’s lair, you’ll need to visit Mount Pilatus in the summer months.

Trail Running

Trails in Mount Pilatus

Pilatus is very popular for trail running with loads of trails that are continuously maintained in the summer months. There’s even a trail that allows you to run from Alpnachstad to Pilatus; it’s by no means easy, so consider doing it only if you’re in great shape and you’re looking for a proper physical challenge.

One of the most popular trail running paths on Pilatus is from Gfellen to Pilatus. The shortest version is 13 kilometers long and takes approximately three and a half hours to complete at a constant running pace. Another popular run is the Swiss Trail Run Pilatus , from Kriens to Fräkmüntegg. It can be done in about an hour and 15 minutes, which isn’t outrageously slower than the cable car.

It’s worth noting that, for five years, the Swiss Trail Run Pilatus has been an organized event. It usually takes place sometime in the summer, and it welcomes any trail runners who are willing to join and rush to the finish line at Fräkmüntegg.

Star Gazing

One of the best things about being high up in the mountains is that you can always see the stars, provided that it’s not cloudy. There’s no light pollution and you can see countless stars even without any star gazing equipment.

If you want to engage in more serious stargazing, you’ll be glad to know that astronomy nights are a thing on Mount Pilatus. It’s a pricey event to attend, but it includes a night at one of the mountain’s hotels with welcome drinks and breakfast, so it’s a good deal. It’s also possible to book the offer without an overnight stay, and on those nights there is an additional train descent to Alpnachstad at 11:30 PM.

Krienseregg Playground

Krienseregg Playground

The Krienseregg Playground is the perfect destination on Mount Pilatus for all families with children. It’s a huge playground with swings, slides, wooden houses, and obstacle courses, and it will make you wish you were a child again.

The playground is very close to the Krienseregg station, so it’s easily accessible without a lot of walking. There’s also a restaurant nearby, where the adults can sit down and relax while keeping an eye on their little ones as they roam around and play.

Esel and Oberhaupt Viewpoints

Observation decks at Mount Pilatus

The Esel and Oberhaupt viewpoints are both very close to the Pilatus Kulm cogwheel railway station and can be easily accessed by anyone. There are quite a few steps to reach the Esel observation deck, but they’re not really dangerous and there’s a rail you can hold onto. The view from the top is absolutely stunning and worth the climb.

The Oberhaupt viewpoint is on a different part of the summit but offers a similar panoramic view of Lake Lucerne.

Fondue Gondola

If you’re traveling to Mount Pilatus from Kriens, you have the option of riding in the Fondue Gondola . It’s the same panoramic journey but with the added benefit of getting a pot of fondue and 250 ml of white wine to celebrate.

This epic experience is 68 CHF per person and it’s available on weekends from November to April. It’s the perfect way of keeping warm while traveling to the mountain summit and you get about 45 minutes to lick the fondue pot clean.

Winter Activities on Mt. Pilatus

Winter in Mount Pilatus

Sledding is always fun, especially on a mountain with numerous runs that range from easy and suitable for kids, to fast and almost dangerous. Of course, it also depends on the type of sleds you rent; there are special sports sleds for adventurers, but also family sleds for those who plan to rush down the mountain with kids.

You can rent sleds at various points atop Pilatus, and at most, it will cost you 20 CHF for the entire day (until 4:30 PM). It’s also necessary to purchase a Snow & Fun day pass so you can access all the different trails and runs on the mountain, and discounts are available to all travelers in possession of the various travel passes for Switzerland.

Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is the winter equivalent of hiking on Mount Pilatus, and it’s very fun. You can rent snowshoes for 20 CHF if you don’t own a pair and spend the entire day exploring the different marked trails.

The most popular area for snowshoeing is between Fräkmüntegg and Krienseregg. There are three separate marked trails here, all of which will take you to different parts of the mountain. The shortest trail takes about an hour to complete and is suitable for complete newbies to snowshoeing, while the longest trail takes just under two hours and requires some previous experience.

But don’t worry – complete the two easier trails first, and you should be able to complete the third one without a hiccup if you’ve got it in you to spend 4 to 5 hours wearing snowshoes.

Dragon Ride

Aerial cableway at Mount Pilatus

The Dragon Trail and the Dragon Glider are not accessible in the winter, but the Dragon Ride is. It’s the aerial cableway that’s been in operation since the 1950s, which transports passengers from Fräkmüntegg to Pilatus Kulm. Each cabin can fit about 55 people, and the total travel time is less than four minutes.

This ride offers some of the most impressive views of Lake Lucerne and its surroundings, and it’s absolutely worth doing if you want to see the panorama of Central Switzerland. A one-way ride on the aerial cableway is 19 CHF (return trip is 38 CHF), but you can get 50% off with any one of the Swiss travel cards.

Christmas Market

Christmas market on Mount Pilatus

Every winter Mount Pilatus hosts Europe’s highest Christmas Market . The event takes place over a weekend, so it’s not something you can really stumble upon by accident. It usually takes place in November, from Friday to Sunday. Trains and cable cars run longer on the Christmas Market Saturday so that everyone can get back to their accommodation safely.

The Mount Pilatus Christmas Market includes wooden stalls and vendors you would expect at any Advent event. You can buy food, warm drinks, and all sorts of handmade items. It’s a wonderful event to experience, made even more special by the fact it takes place thousands of meters above sea level, with spectacular panoramic views in the background.

Best Mount Pilatus Hiking Routes

Hiking trails at Mount Pilatus

Mount Pilatus is home to many wonderful hiking trails that are accessible in the summer and shoulder months. Many people choose to hike from either Kriens or Alpnachstad to Pilatus Kulm – the trail is steep and the hike takes several hours to complete, but it’s perfectly doable and plenty of fun, not to mention entirely free.

The ascent to Tomlishorn is another very popular hike atop Mount Pilatus. It’s the tallest summit of the mountain, so naturally, it’s popular with the more experienced alpinists. Many people will also hike from Pilatus Kulm to Fräkmüntegg. It’s a very steep descent with switchbacks, rock scrambling, and muddy parts, but a very thrilling adventure of 3.5 kilometers.

Where to Eat on Mt. Pilatus

Cheese fondue

There’s at least one restaurant on each station atop Pilatus, whether it’s a cable car or train station. Here’s a quick overview of the best restaurants on the mountain, and their signature dishes that you need to try.

Restaurant Bellevue

Restaurant Bellevue is near the Pilatus Kulm station, in Hotel Bellevue . It’s one of the most easily accessible restaurants on the summit, just a short walk from the observation platforms. The food is decent – it’s nothing mind-blowingly good, but it’s tasty enough and the portions are generous.

The restaurant is pricey, but that can be said for virtually any restaurant in Switzerland, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that most people spend at least 20 CHF per person for a meal here.

Restaurant Pilatus-Kulm

Restaurant Pilatus-Kulm is a Swiss restaurant in the Pilatus Kulm Hotel. It’s one of the two restaurants at the summit, and it has much better reviews than the other restaurant (Bellevue). At Pilatus-Kulm the menu mostly includes Swiss staples, but they’ve also got a good number of vegan and vegetarian dishes. If you do end up visiting this recommend, I highly recommend going for the fondue.

Panoramagrill

Panoramagrill is a fast food stand near the Pilatus-Kulm station. It’s the perfect option for travelers who don’t want to spend 100 francs for lunch atop the mountain, and would rather just get something to eat on the go.

There aren’t many different options here – I think you can only get sausages and french fries, plus a few drinks. But it should be enough to sustain you while you explore the mountain, and it’s certainly cheaper than sitting down at one of the restaurants for a proper meal.

Restaurant Frakmuntegg

Restaurant Frakmuntegg is probably my favorite restaurant on Pilatus, even if it’s just for the cozy wooden interior. It’s at the Frakmuntegg cable car station and it’s a buffet-style restaurant. The prices are reasonable, but you don’t have too many different options. Classic crispy rosti are probably the best thing to try at this restaurant.

Restaurant Krienseregg

Restaurant Krienseregg is near the Krienseregg gondola station. It’s probably got the most variety of dishes, with pasta, salads, and various local staples on the menu. This restaurant overlooks the children’s playground, and it’s very popular with families.

Where to Stay on Mt. Pilatus

from zurich lucerne and mount pilatus day tour

Hotel Bellevue 3*

Hotel Bellevue is a three-star hotel near the top station of the Alpnachstad-Pilatus Kulm funicular. The average nightly rate is 390 CHF for a double room, and it’s worth noting that rooms boast sprawling views of the Alps and Lake Lucerne.

Pilatus Kulm Hotel 3*

Pilatus Kulm Hotel is also near the top station of the funicular, in the same area as Hotel Bellevue. The rooms have a wonderful view of the landscapes below the mountain, but the average nightly rate is higher than at Hotel Bellevue at 470 CHF.

Frakmuntegg Tree Tents

Frakmuntegg Tree Tents are the best option for campers on the mountain. The tents are tied to the trees in the forest near the adventure park, and the rate for one tent is 140 CHF per person. I will say that it’s not really cheaper than a double room at a hotel if there are two of you, so it’s not the best option if you’re trying to save money on lodging.

What to Pack For Mt. Pilatus

Comfortable and waterproof hiking boots should be in your suitcase regardless of what you’re planning to do on Pilatus. The same goes for a windproof and water-resistant jacket.

For a summer visit, you can pack shorts and trail sneakers , but I would also recommend packing some warmer clothes so you can be comfortable if the weather changes. A lightweight down jacket could come in handy in the evenings since the temperatures often drop below 10 degrees Celsius.

If you’re heading to Pilatus in the winter, pack your warmest clothes. The temperatures are often below zero, so you will need a warm jacket, warm boots, sweaters, hoodies, and comfy underlayers. Layer up so that you can easily regulate your temperature, especially when you go inside restaurants and hotels where it’s much warmer than outdoors.

Time Needed to Spend on Mt. Pilatus

Mount Pilatus

How much time you need for Mount Pilatus really depends on what you would want to do there. If you enjoy hiking, trail running, and adventure parks, you could easily spend an entire weekend here having loads of fun.

If, on the other hand, your idea of a trip to a mountain includes visiting an observation deck and getting something to eat, an afternoon should be enough. You can do a round trip in a few hours if you rely on the public transport services instead of walking.

In general, there are plenty of things to do at Pilatus and you could stay busy for days here. If you enjoy being outdoors and exploring, don’t hesitate to book a longer stay. At the same time, if you just want to check out what the hype is about, you can easily see the most popular landmarks atop the mountain on a daily excursion.

Lucerne, where residents speak the Swiss German dialect, offers dramatic views of the Swiss Alps, including Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi.

From the moment Chris and I walked out of the train station in Lucerne, we were captivated by this lovely, colorful Swiss town.

You'll find that the train station in Lucerne offers a central location for visitors wanting to take the train to many destinations within Switzerland as well as a central location to begin exploring the many fascinating sites of Lucerne.

If you have a day or two to spend exploring, discover a variety of unique things to do in Lucerne.

1. Stroll Across the Chapel Bridge or Kapellbrücke

You may recognize Chapel Bridge or Kapellbrücke as a famous landmark in Switzerland.

First and foremost, you should start your exploration of Lucerne strolling along Kapellbrücke of Chapel Bridge. It is one of the outstanding Instagram Worthy spots where the flowers and beams make for some stunning photographs.

You may be interested in knowing that the tower at the center of the bridge has been used for defense over the years as well as a prison and a torture chamber.

2. Explore the Musegg Fortification

In our wandering and searching for things to do in Lucerne, Chris and I found ourselves at the Musegg fortification with its mighty towers and bastions. The fortification was free to tour, so we climbed a tower or two and enjoyed the view.

The final tower—Mannliturn—has a parapet at the top where you can enjoy a sweeping view of Lucerne.

3. Stroll Around Lake Lucerne

Visitors from all over the world love to stroll along Lake Lucerne and enjoy the tranquility of Lucerne surrounded by majestic mountains.. The lake with its central location is often referred to as the "heart of Switzerland".

"Although the lake is reminiscent of a fjord landscape, it is mainly characterized by a mild microclimate. Its shoreline consists of fertile hillsides, meadows and valleys. Its shores are home to forests inhabited by deer, chamois, foxes and marmots. Mount Rigi is covered in chestnut and almond trees as well as alpine flowers on the sunnier slopes." Lakepedia

4. Explore Old Town Lucerne

Wander around old town Lucerne getting lost in its narrow alleyways. Did you know that it is completely free of traffic? Don't pass by a great spot for lunch at XXL Kebab and Vegan . Chris and I settled on a bench nearby to enjoy a tasty lunch and do a little people watching. It’s completely free of traffic, so the best way to do it is by wandering around and getting lost in its narrow alleyways.

5. Discover the Lion of Lucerne

The Lion of Lucerne is a rock carving in a small park in Lucerne, designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen (sculptor of the Christus). This monument of a dying lion was hewn between 1820–21 by Lukas Ahorn and was commissioned to commemorate the massacre of Swiss Guards in 1792 during the French Revolution. As one of the most famous monuments in Switzerland, this powerful memorial is visited each year by about 1.4 million tourists.

As Mark Twain famously stated, “The Lion of Lucerne (is) the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world.”

6. Visit Cathedrals

Lucerne is home to a variety of cathedrals.

  • Jesuitenkirche
  • Markuskirche
  • Franziskanerkirche
  • St. Gallus Catholic Church
  • Peter's Chapel
  • Matthauskirche
  • Stiftung Flammarion der Romisch Katholischen Pfarrei

7. Take the Steamboat from Lucerne to Mount Rigi

You will want to catch the steamboat (or another boat) to Vitznau. Don't be like Chris and I though; we raced to the boat and settled in with one minute to spare! The ticket office is located across the street from the train station in Lucerne.

When you get off the boat at Vitznau and you plan to ride the cog rail up to Mt. Rigi, catch the next cog rail as soon as you get off the boat. It is just steps from where you get off the boat. Otherwise you’ll be waiting for an hour for the next rail. There isn’t much to see in Vitznau.

8. Ride the Cog Rail to Rigi Kulm

The ride from Vitznau to Rigi Kulm is beautiful—there isn’t much of Switzerland that isn’t stunning and picturesque.

Chris and I finally made it to the top of the mountain and decided to move away from all of the tourists. We took another cog train over to Rigi Krabel where we planned to walk back along a flat path to Rigi Kulm ( Kulm means rounded mountain ).

9. Hike Around Rigi Kulm

Once Chris and I reached Rigi Krabel, we took a gondola up from Krabel where we stopped for a snack at a little cafe just off the path.

Our walk back to the Mount Rigi gondola took us about an hour and a half. We passed a lot of cows, heard a lot of cowbells, and saw very few people. Those that we did see taught us a new Swiss German greeting, “Gruezi” for hello.

10. Ride the Cog Rail Train to Mount Pilatus

The cable car ride from Kriens to Mt. Pilatus actually involved two different cable cars—a small 4-person gondola to Frakmuntegg, followed by the Dragon Glider (a larger aerial cableway) to Mt. Pilatus. The entire journey to the top took about a half an hour.

If you plan to visit Mt. Pilatus as a day trip , many tourists ride either the gondola or cogwheel train to the top of Mt. Pilatus and explore, hike, and take pictures.

The cogwheel rail to Pilatus is the steepest in the world!

Be sure to check the timetable for the last trip down the mountain each day.

It is a loooooong way down the mountain if you have to hike!

11. Hike to Tomlishorn on Mount Pilatus

The hike to Tomlishorn took about an hour and a half. Chris and I hiked later in the afternoon and saw only one other person on the trail. As we walked along, we could hear the cowbells clanging from the valley below.

The hiking path skirted the edge of the mountain, and was clearly marked with a railing. The last section of the trail was rockier, so you'll want to watch your step along the way.

The views though? Stunning.

12. Climb to Oberhaupt on Mt. Pilatus to Watch the Sunset

If you are spending the night on Mount Pilatus, be sure to climb to Oberhaupt to watch the sunset. Many people leave the Pilatus Hotel dining room part way through dinner to catch the sunset; it was an option our check-in agent suggested for us and highly recommended we do.

I suggest you leave the dining room at least 15-20 minutes before sunset to make the 10-15 minute climb. You'll catch the gorgeous evening views. It is totally worth the effort!

13. Spend the Night on Mt. Pilatus

Chris and I were excited for this overnight stay. We easily traveled up the mountain with our luggage in tow and deposited our bags and backpacks in our room before checking out the view and the mountain.

As it was close to the end of September, the hotel was not packed at all.

14. Paraglide from Mt. Pilatus

You might say that paragliding is the proper way to see Switzerland ! Just remember these tips:

  • Fly tandem with a licensed guide
  • Be aware that your flight is dependent on the weather conditions. Your guide will monitor the weather conditions prior to your take off.
  • The guides will bring all of the necessary paragliding equipment.
  • Wear closed toed shoes
  • Wear long pants
  • Wear a warm jacket . We didn't bring puffy jackets for this end of summer trip, but would have appreciated the warmth while paragliding. As it was, our guides provided extra jackets as another layer that we gratefully wore.
  • Do not drink alcohol or take drugs before your flight
  • Listen to your guide. When he says, "Run!", you run to catch the thermals.
  • Legs out straight on the landing unless your guide says otherwise. The tandem pack comes with substantial padding to soften your landing.

Are you wondering if paragliding is safe? Be sure your tandem paragliding guides are fully licensed and insured. Schedule with a reputable company.

16. Take a Day Trip to the Lindt Chocolate Factory in Switzerland

We learned a lot about the beginnings of chocolate making and perfecting the art of the smooth and creamy chocolate that we have today.

Chris and I may have taken advantage of the samples at the end of the tour and ate our admission ticket worth of samples. We spent about 2.5 hours at the factory, picked up a few chocolates to take home and then walked to the train station.

Tour the Lindt Chocolate Factory in Switzerland

17. Take a Day Trip to Lugano

The picturesque city of Lugano , in the heart of the Ticino canton of Switzerland, is tucked along the shores of Lake Lugano surrounded by majestic mountains. Ticino is the most Mediterranean of all of the Swiss cantons.

As the biggest city in the Ticino region with approximately 63,000 residents, Lugano is often referred to as  Switzerland’s “Little Italy” . Lugano blends the Swiss and Italian cultures with its Italian-speaking residents, customs and food .

Things to do in Lugano:

  • Take photos along Lake Lugano
  • Take a funicular to Monte Brè
  • Hike from Monte Brè to Gandria
  • Hike the Olive Grove Trail
  • Visit San Lorenzo Cathedral
  • Check out the shops and boutiques in Piazza della Riforma
  • Take the ferry around the lake
  • Make dinner reservations across the lake
  • Stroll through Parco Ciani
  • Get a massage

18. Ride the Bernina Express

The Bernina Express is a fantastic scenic rail journey from Chur, Switzerland to Tirano in Italy through the heart of the Swiss Alps. You'll marvel at the beauty of the steep peaks of the Swiss Alps, the sparkling lakes, and charming alpine villages. Riding the Bernina Express is one of the fantastic things to do in Lucerne (and Switzerland). Chris and I both highly recommend it!

19. Photograph Fluffy Cows

20. visit zurich.

We happened to be flying home from Zurich, but if you are planning a day trip from Lucerne to Zurich, it is an easy train ride from the train station in Lucerne.

Things to do in Zurich:

  • Wander through Old Town Zurich
  • Visit one of the many museums
  • Go to the zoo
  • Stroll along the storefronts of Bahnhofstrasse
  • Tour cathedrals and chapels
