Fyn in Denmark – 20 tips and things to do

Do you like being in nature, go hiking, visit castles and small fishing villages and great food? Then I have the perfect destination in Denmark for you, Fyn, or Funen. Fyn is the country’s third largest island, and is located between Zealand , the island of Copenhagen, and Jutland, the mainland. In this article you will the best things to do in Fyn in Denmark, with tips for outdoor experiences, hikes, cultural activities, food and unique places to stay.

20 tips and things to do in Fyn in Denmark

Walk part of øhavstien – the archipelago trail.

It probably won’t surprise you when I tell you that Denmark is a great country to go hiking. One of the best things to do in Fyn in Denmark is to hike a part of the Øhavstien, or the Archipelago trail. With 220 kilometers of hiking trails, it is the longest hiking trail in Denmark. But of course you don’t have to walk the entire 220 kilometers. For example, I made a nice day hike from Falsled to Faaborg wich is about 25 kilometers.

You walk through forests, across fields, past charming farms with thatched roofs. Everything is in bloom in spring, especially the grain fields filled with yellow flowers are so pretty. It is nice that you actually walk through the fields and meet very few people along the way. During this walk you can enjoy the surroundings and completely unwind from daily life. Finish you hike with a drink on one of the terraces in Faaborg.

The above route is 25 kilometers long and suitable for anyone who enjoys walking. There are some slight ascents but most of the trail is flat. We walked the route in 6 hours, including stops. There are clear signs all around, so getting lost will be hard. The entire route runs along the South Fyn archipelago through Langeland, Siø, Tåsinge and South Fyn, from Falsled in the west to Lundeborg in the east and also across Ærø. Do bring enough food and drinks with you. There is nothing available along the way.

Go whale watching

I had no idea that you would be able to see whales up close in Fyn in Denmark. Lillebaelt Nature Reserve is one of the most densely populated whale-watching areas in the world. And there is a good chance that you will spot the porpoise here, one of the smallest whale species. The animals can be seen between April and September but are most common in the summer months. This is because of the large quantities of fish that can be found here in the waters and along the coast.

Good observation points for whales are the harbors of Middelfart and Fredericia. You can also make a special whale safari from Middelfart and try to spot the animals from the water. Be sure to visit the whale listening station in Middelfart, where you can listen to the sounds of the whales through an underwater microphone.

Visit Lillebaelt Nature Reserve

Lillebælt, or The Little Belt, is a strait between the island of Fyn and Jutland. This marine reserve consists of 200 km2, 70% of which is sea. 54% of this is a protected nature reserve due to the large population of porpoises that live there. You can go hiking, whale watching and even scuba diving. One of the hikes you can take is the Lillebaeltsti, a 12-kilometer trail along the coast. The walk is flat and easy, offering nice views of the sea and the coastal landscape. Start the walk at the bridge of Lillebælt or the shelter of Sobadet, also a place to spend the night (more about that later0. You then walk around in which you also visit the city of Middelfart.

Walk across a 60-meter high bridge

Are you looking for a bit of adventure? Then one of the things to do for you in Fyn Denmark is Bridgewalking . You walk here at a height of 60-meters on top of the Old Little Belt Bridge, which connects the island of Fyn with Jutland. One of the residents from the neighboring village Middelfart decided to introduce Bridgewalking to Fyn in Denmark, after his experience in Australia. It is the only place in Europe where you can do this.

Dressed in gray overalls and signed to the railing, you embark on your adventure. Once at the top you look far out over the Danish islands, villages and sea. And if you are lucky you will also spot the small whales here. You are 20 meters above the passing traffic, which in the case of a train is accompanied by a deafening sound. Along the way, the guides tell you about the area in an interesting way.

How adventurous is Bridgewalking? It is, because you will find yourself at a great height. But you are very well chained to the edge with a harness, while you move along the railings. The path is wide and the surface stable. The walk takes 2 hours and is one of the fun and adventurous things to do when you are in Fyn Denmark. Just don’t do this, if you are afraid of heights.

Spend the night in a shelter on Fyn in Denmark

Shelters can be found throughout Denmark, but most of them are located around Fyn. Booking one of these shelters costs just a few euros per night, making it an affordable option for you to stay. But it is the experience what really makes you want to do this. Shelters are simple huts, located in the middle of nature, where you can spend the night in a lovely setting. You will find them in different shapes and sizes, ranging from open-air structures with a roof above your head to quaint wooden cabins complete with a door. Often there is wood available for you to enjoy a cozy campfire and there is a clean toilet within walking distance.

Remember to bring your own sleeping mat, sleeping bag, drinks and food, which can be prepared over your personal campfire. The Book en Shelter website offers useful resources, including recipes that guide you through crafting your very own campfire pizza. Moreover, you’ll find tips on identifying mushrooms, plants, and elderberries that you’ll find during your hiking.

An overview of shelters, facilities and a booking option can be found here.

Look for edible plants and food

If you enjoy the outdoors and good food, then a beach safari on Fyn in Denmark is one of the best things to do. And that is something very different from what you might expect. Accompanied by an expert outdoor guide, you’ll embark on a journey along the beach, searching for edible plants and herbs. During the safari, we were introduced to a variety of finds, including a beach cabbage with a distinctive flavor, plants with a taste of crisp cucumbers, and a remarkable leaf that possesses the essence of wasabi, wich has left numerous top chefs astonished. There is also an opportunity to go fishing.

However, the highlight of the beach safari is witnessing your hand-picked plants and herbs come to life on your plate. You will enjoy a delicious meal around the campfire after your tour. And you can of course assist in the preparations.

Interested in going on a beach safari? You can contact outdoor guide Lars Henriksen though [email protected] or +45 22121646 .

Hygge on Fyn in Denmark

Have you ever heard of Hygge? It is a Danish expression and custom that embodies the concept of coziness and creating a nice moment for oneself. Hygge can be found in the simple ways of life, and there are different ways to embrace and enjoy it. However, if you find yourself in Fyn, Denmark, and planning to spend the night at Falsled Strand Camping (about which more later), there’s a special hygge experience you can book. Owner Leonarda and team make your room completely hygge ready, including a foot bath with fresh herbs from the area, a bottle of wine and more goodies. The best way to get familiar with the Danish hygge.

Helnaes Peninsula

On the west coast of Fyn in Denmark, near the town of Assens, you will find the Helnaes peninsula, consisting of a long coastline, meadows and fields. Around Bo Bakker, a hilly area, there are beautiful views to enjoy. The area is also recommended to go for nice walks. More information about the hikes can be found at the tourism office in Assens.

Danish wine

Did you know that Denmark produces wine? Since 2000, Denmark has been officially recognized by the EU as a wine-growing country and there are even several wine regions. This makes it the northernmost wine-growing area in Europe. And Fyn in Denmark can count itself as one of these regions. You can follow special wine routes that take you past vineyards and wineries. I recommend Stokkebye and Skaarupøre. Both produce organic wines and are the main suppliers to star restaurants in both Denmark and France. I myself did a small wine tasting at Falsled Strand Camping where owner Leonarda let us taste different wines from the region.

Get to know Danish cuisine

I had high expectations about culinary delights in Denmark, especially with renowned restaurants like Noma, known as one of the best in the world. However, I was surprised to discover that great dining experiences can be found everywhere. In Fyn, numerous restaurants boast their own vegetable gardens and greenhouses, emphasizing their commitment to working with fresh, local ingredients. Moreover, with an abundance of fish options on the menu, dining in Fyn Denmark becomes even better for a fish lover like myself.

Cultural things to do in Fyn Denmark

Faaborg is one of the oldest and most beautiful market towns in Fyn in Denmark. You can walk around the narrow streets, past old merchant houses, the characteristic clock tower and take a seat on one of the nice terraces. Are you interested in modern art? Then visit the Faaborg museum, one of the things to do in Fyn in Denmark if you are interested in art. Here you will meet a number of important artists from the region.

Learn more about yourself and nature

Do you have energy left after one of your walks? In the Øhavsmuseet in Faaborg, you learn how you relate to nature. There are spaces that are dedicated to the forest, the sea, the mountains and the dark, presenting different audio stories. There are also experiments for you to participate, giving you an insight into how you absorb the environment around you. Your senses will be fully stimulated.

Fish at Faaborg Rogeri Café

If you like fish, a lunch at Rogeri Café in Faaborg should not be missed. This small restaurant is located in the harbor of Faaborg and serves freshly smoked fish from its own smokehouse every day. There are dishes with salmon, shrimps, mackerel or mixed dishes. Simple but oh so tasty.

Castle Egeskov

Fyn in Denmark is home to 123 castles, including Egeskov Slot, said to be one of the best-preserved Renaissance castles in Europe. This old moated castle is located 35 kilometers from Odense and it is one of the interesting things to do in Fyn in Denmark. Even if it is because of the castle gardens, which have won several international prizes. It is also possible to visit the castle and its palace halls itself. The castle is still inhabited by Count Ahlefeldt and his family, but is open to visitors on a daily base.

Visit Odense on Fyn in Denmark

Odense is the third largest city in Fyn in Denmark’s and is the birthplace of the Danish writer, Hans Christian Andersen, known for Disney successes such as The Little Mermaid, and Frozen. In Odense you can follow in his footsteps and visit his museum. The H.C. Explore Svendborg with the invisible theater tour

Svenborg in Fyn in Denmark has a small-scale character and a peaceful atmosphere. One of the things to do if you want to learn more about Svendborg is to go on the Invisible Theater tour. With the special tour app, you walk a route and listen to stories from local writers along the way. Personally, I have always found it interesting to delve into the lives and works of local artists when I travel. It provides a deeper understanding of the country and culture.

The impressive landscape on Funen, with rolling hills, steep slopes and deep gorges, was formed more than 14,000 years ago by the last, great ice age. Funen, also known as the garden of Denmark, has nutrient-rich, fertile soil that produces high-quality food. Fruit and vegetables of excellent taste and quality are sold fresh directly from the producer in many markets and farms. Agricultural areas make up part of the island and shape the landscape with their colors. Fruit meadows and rape fields, separated by beautiful lilac hedges, are omnipresent examples of this. In addition to the typical Danish, thatched half-timbered houses, there are old mansions and castles, especially in the hinterland of the island.

As the home of the famous fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen, one of the city’s most popular attractions is the Hans Christian Andersen Museum. The museum tells the story of the famous author, from the recreation of the little cobbler shop where he was born to extensive collections of his drawings, paper cut creations, and famous stories and poems. The museum is located in the historic district of the city, making it the ideal starting point for a fairytale fantasy that wanders through the cobbled streets of Denmark’s third largest city.

Other highlights of a visit to Odense include Brandts Klædefabrik, a cultural center in a converted textile factory that houses the Museum of Photographic Art, as well as an excellent selection of art galleries, cafes and cinemas. Music lovers can visit the Carl Nielsen Museum to learn about the city’s famous composer, while railway enthusiasts will enjoy the valuable collection of historic locomotives in the Danish Railway Museum.

Visit Møntergaarden in Odense for exhibitions about the city’s history. The museum is housed in some of the best preserved Renaissance buildings in Odense, which was built in 1646. There’s more history to encounter outside of town at Funen Village, an open-air museum where visitors can see what life was like on Funen in the 1850s. Remodeled using traditional buildings and farming methods, the attraction comes complete with costumed “villagers” about their daily chores.

Odense also hosts a variety of festivals throughout the year. One of the most spectacular is the annual Flower Festival that takes place every August and sees the center of the city with a wonderful display of seasonal flowers. There are regular jazz events, farmers markets and open air concerts throughout the period, while later in the year there is a 19th century Christmas market in operation from mid-November, with craft stalls and traditional entertainment.

Day trips from Odense

With miles of breathtaking coastline, it’s not surprising to find that a number of coastal towns are attractions in themselves. For day trips from Odense, the cities of Faaborg, Svendborg and Kerteminde are excellent choices. The idyllic market town and fishing village of Kerteminde nestles between the sea and the inlet, surrounded by beautiful beaches. From here you can access the Hindsholm peninsula with its natural beauty or an old 2nd century AD. BC Visit the Viking ship of the 10th century, the famous Danish painter Johannes Larsen Museum and the new sea-life center Fjord & Bælt to open up close and personal to small whales and other fascinating marine life.

Walk west to the old port of Assens for its maritime history and remarkably well-preserved collection of department stores 18. and 19th century. Take the scenic route to the quaint village of Faaborg to climb the medieval clock tower with its far-reaching coastal views, examine the famous Danish artwork in the Faaborg Museum, and the luxurious furnishings of the house in Den Gamle Gaards Roccoco Room. Faaborg and the surrounding area are diverse and exciting. It bursts with unforgettable experiences from the lush landscape – across the beautiful South Funen Archipelago to the hills of Svanninge Bakker.

Head south to discover the colorful accounts of Svendborg and its stunning archipelago. Conveniently connected to the bridge to the neighboring islands of Tåsinge and Langeland, with other islands easily accessible by boat, it is the perfect base for an island hopping adventure. Step back in time on the long-standing island of Ærø with its picturesque little villages and old farms, or go wild with a trip to one of the small islands that are only inhabited by birds.

With a wide variety of water sports and sailing activities, vacationers can enjoy traveling the archipelago on one of the many traditional wooden schooners, learn how to sail a club, sea kayak to their own deserted island, get out on a seal safari just in some of the most pristine Go for a swim in the water. And if you splash around in the water is not your cup of tea, Funen must be every cyclist’s dream. With 730 miles of signposted bike paths stretching coast to coast and over the very gently rolling central plains, it is as if the island were

If you like Denmark, you will love Funen. The island offers everything that defines the Danish way of life. Diverse flora and fauna, beach and dunes, opportunities for sporting activities, history and culture as well as cultural and culinary specialties. This successful mixture, in front of a postcard backdrop and in a pleasant climate, ensures an unforgettable stay on Funen.

Discovering the coastal towns of Fyn, Denmark

While Copenhagen and Aarhus draw visitors to the east and west of Denmark, the island of Fyn sits right in between, like the country’s green heart. Denmark’s second-largest island is a beautiful place to explore, and while Odense has lots to offer , the coastline is dotted with atmospheric seaside towns.

When the weather’s good, nothing beats a clockwise Tour de Fyn , stopping at these cute little seaside towns to soak up the laid-back vibe. Here are seven of the best and most attractive coastal towns on Fyn.

Kerteminde is one of the best villages to visit on Fyn

Ice cream. This is the first thing that comes to mind for many locals when they think about the town of Kerteminde. Although it’s home to less than 1000 people, the little town has a big reputation as a great place for yummy ice cream.  Vaffelhuset , located at Trollegade 2D, is the most famous ice-cream shop in town, as the long queues attest on hot summer days.

A short walk from Vaffelhuset, the marina serves as a popular overnight stop for the many sailboats that visit this part of the island. Kerteminde is also worth a visit for its central and sandy beach, and for reliable Danish restaurants like Rudolf Mathis and Tornøes Hotel , both within easy walking of the centre. Tornøes Hotel also offers simple, comfortable rooms , if you want to stay the night.

While you’re in Kerteminde it’s worth paying a visit to Farvergården on Langegade. This former merchant’s house combines a cosy café with exhibitions on local history. If you’d like to learn more about the area’s history make time for Johannes Larsen Museet . Set in a famous painter’s former home, this welcoming museum and gallery costs around 90 DKK to look around.

If you have time left over then you might want to say hello to ‘Amanda’ – the town’s most famous sculpture, which acts as a kind of symbol of strength for local ladies. A good lunch spot on Kerteminde is Lulu’s Café & Boutique , which offers delicious sandwiches and salads.

Visiting with kids? Then dive into a world beneath the waves at Fjord&Bælt , where you can learn about the waters around Denmark (adult tickets around 110 DKK, kids around 55 DKK).

Nyborg is one of the best coastal towns in Denmark

Just south of Kerteminde along Fyn’s east coast, the city of Nyborg was Denmark’s first capital. Although it’s hard to believe now, this little town was right at the heart of Danish politics and power during medieval times, and there’s talk of Nyborg being listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Today  Nyborg Slot , the town’s castle, is the main attraction (note that it’s currently undergoing major restorations and is due to re-open 2020). The castle is guarded by ramparts known as Nyborg Vold, which are home to Denmark’s oldest open-air theatre. If you want to see it in use, Nyborg Voldspil puts on its annual musical between July and August (tickets from 120 DKK).

The central harbour in Nyborg combines old fishing boats with modern seafront architecture. Just outside the city centre in a revamped train workshop, Nyborg Destilleri tempts visitors with its own whisky, gin and rum (there’s also a café and a restaurant, for those who’d rather not drink).

Another reason to stop in Nyborg is the town’s lovely northeast-facing beach, where you can kick back and admire the silhouette of the mighty Great Belt Bridge, which connects Fyn with Zealand. This high-end hotel has views of the bridge, plus a neat spa area, while this beachfront campsite has cheaper digs for overnight stays.

How to get around on Fyn

Fyn is best discovered by car. If you need to rent some wheels, this site searches dozens of local providers to find you the best deal. If you’d rather not drive, you can reach all of the towns we’ve listed by public transport from Odense. Trains will take you to Svendborg, Middelfart and Nyborg ( buy tickets here ), while all of the cities are served by Fynbus .

Fyn itself can be reached from either Zealand or Jylland, by train or bus. The journey time from Copenhagen to Odense by train is around an hour and a half. If you go by bus, you can expect the journey to last around two hours.

Svendborg is one of the prettiest towns on the island of Fyn

Further south still, Svendborg functions as a lively jumping off point for trips to the South Fyn Archipelago. From here, road bridges lead to smaller islands like Thurø, Tåsinge and Langeland, while ferries take visitors to non-bridged islands like Ærø.

To be honest, you really don’t need to leave the city behind to find decent entertainment; this is the second most populous city on Fyn and it offers lots of coastal charm and cultural treats.

Just head to the harbour where you’ll find Kammerateriet , a multifunctional music and events venue located in the former shipyard area. This area has been transformed to include an urban beach and other facilities for rest and recreation.

Svendborg’s cultural life peaks during major events like the food festival Kulinarisk Sydfyn  at the end of June, and the city’s film festival at the end of August (it features a sail-in cinema!). Museum lovers would do well to check out the The Danish Yachting Museum , or learn about modern natural history at Naturama (around 110 DKK for adults, while kids go free).

If you’re visiting between September and March, why not catch a basketball game at the home of local heroes Svendborg Rabbits , who play in the top Danish league? Tickets are great value at around 80 DKK.

Staying the night in Svendborg? A nice atmospheric place is Hotel Æro , which occupies a 19th-century building by the harbour.

Faaborg is one of the best seaside towns in Fyn

Fyn’s most idyllic coastal town atmosphere is probably found along the cobbled streets of colourful Faaborg. Right on the south coast of Fyn and with ferry connections to islands like Bjørnø, Lyø and Ærø, this is one of best places to visit on the whole island.

The city’s historic streets surround the central square, from where you can spot the bright yellow bell tower peaking out from behind red rooftops. The church was pulled down in 1536, but the lone tower still acts as the most recognisable landmark in town.

A short walk away, the modernised waterfront area is home to an inviting harbour bath, while trendy waterfront restaurants like Det Hvide Pakhus do a lovely line in local seafood.

For a touch of urbanity in a small town, visit the Helios Theatre . A combined cinema and event venue, it’s linked with the excellent Soze coffeehouse and roastery . If you have more time to kill, keep on track with a ride on the vintage railway Sydfyenske Veteranjernbane , where you can take the trip to Korinth and back, 1950s style. Return tickets cost around 90 DKK, while kids go half price.

Assens is one of the nicest places to visit in Fyn

Assens offers plenty of historic charm and some neatly kept half-timbered houses. Most are found along and around the shop-lined main street, Ladegårdsgade, which leads down to the harbour.

This harbour area is often used for cultural events throughout the summer season, like when the big wooden ships arrive during the Fyn Rundt event held annualy at the end of July.

Don’t miss out on a visit to the former tobacco factory Tobaksgaarden , which was turned into a cultural hub in 2004 and now houses a small cinema, a café and a concert venue, as well as a music school. Nearby you can visit Willemoesgården – the bright red birthplace of local naval hero Peter Willemoes, who was killed in battle in 1808, just 24 years old.

If hunger strikes, enjoy lunch in the neighbouring Café Plums Gård, which is set in a cobbled courtyard, and take a short stroll to the church Vor Frue Kirke to admire its octagonal tower. Beer lover? Then why not try an alternative to the classic Carlsberg and take a guided brewery tour of Bryggeriet Vestfyen (available on selected days only).

Middlefart is good place to watch sailboats and eat seafood

It takes a stern, unhappy traveller not to smile at the sight of the word Middelfart, especially if you’ve just passed through Assens.

On the west coast, a short bridge-crossing from Danish ’mainland’ of Jylland, Middelfart balances history and modern city life well. This can be seen at the revamped waterfront where wooden sailboats are moored in the old harbour, while the big modern yachts head to the new marina instead. Right beside this is Kulturøen, which includes a sea-view restaurant , a cinema, a café and a library.

In between the two harbour areas, the hockey-puck-shaped Café Razz is one of the most popular spots in town, with splendid views of the suspension bridge that spans the Little Belt Strait. The bridge acts as a backdrop for Denmark’s biggest one-day festival, Rock Under Broen , which is held every year at the beginning of June. Meanwhile, the older bridge between Fyn and Jylland can be conquered on a Bridge Walking tour for the brave (around 279 DKK).

The Little Belt strait can be experienced up close on local whale-safari tours . Prefer a more sedate activity? Stay on dry land you can check out the fragile ceramic collections at CLAY . There’s free entrance on Wednesdays after 5pm.

Bogense is one of the smallest towns in Fyn

Despite being the smallest town on this list, Bogense has the largest marina on Fyn, and with space for more than 700 boats it’s a real hotspot for sailing tourists.  Bogense acts like a small capital of Northern Fyn, with a distinct contrast between the old heart – full of tiny townhouses – and the modernised harbour promenades.

Take a stroll around and treat yourself to coffee or lunch at Lunds Hotel or Dampskibshuset . Or drop by Bogense’s very own Manneken Pis sculpture, given to the city in 1934 (it’s a copy of the more famous version in Brussels, and the little boy relieving himself in a fountain is frequently dressed up for local celebrations).

If you fancy exploring offshore, try one of the sea adventures onboard the well-kept wooden ship M/S Castor (prices vary depending on the type of trip), or strap on your walking boots to explore the nearby island of Æbelø, a protected area which is accessible by foot during low tide. Raining? Then visit Nordfyns Museum for a local history lesson – admission is just 20 DKK.

A brief introduction to Fyn (Denmark) 2 min read

National Geographic thinks Fyn’s Kerteminde is one of Europe’s best secret villages: Fyn is pronounced ‘Foon’ and is located between Zealand (Copenhagen’s home island) and mainland Denmark. If you’re driving from Copenhagen, you go over the ‘Great Belt Bridge’ (the 4th longest suspension bridge in the world) in order to get there. Fyn is covered in gardens, woods, parks, castles and connected to its own archipelago. Egeskov Castle is a destination packed with outdoor activities, exhibitions and festivals (such as the popular Heartland music festival) throughout the year. Odense has its own street food hotspot, Storms Pakhus, where you can try world cuisine in the cool surroundings of an old warehouse. On Fyn you can also try the only bridgewalking outside Sydney! You can harness up, climb up into the belly of a massive bridge, and then see Fyn from a whole new angle. The most famous Dane ever, Hans Christian Andersen, came from Odense and the atmospheric old town is a place where you can truly step back in time, into the world of his fairy tales. Buy a one-day ticket to Hans Christian Andersen’s Odense, visit his childhood home, and follow his trail through his city. Each October, deep in the heart of Denmark, wizards, goblins and cosplayers gather at the ‘Magic Days Festival’ (formerly known as the ‘Harry Potter Festival’). Heartland Festival means music from big international artists, long summer nights, a dramatic castle and gardens as a backdrop: a unique festival held at the start of summer each year. Enjoy the atmosphere of Fyn’s cutest towns and villages: beyond the cute seaside town of Kerteminde, one can visit Denmark’s only Viking ship burial ground at Ladby, and jump into the sea from the iconic outdoor swimming baths of the old port of Faaborg. The pretty harbour of Svendborg is also a good starting point to explore Fyn’s many neighbouring islands. The archipelago of small, laid-back islands around Fyn’s coast is one of Denmark’s best kept secrets: you can cycle or drive between islands, taking quaint ferries or crossing pretty bridges, with the calming sound of water at your side. Get to know the Danish way of life at the many small villages along the way, such as the beautiful and picturesque Ærøskøbing on Ærø. Fyn is also full of photogenic spots, both natural landscapes and manmade attractions. Valdemar’s Castle on Tåsinge island is one of these, particularly the tea pavilion set right on a bay with views over the sea. The castle and museum is also home to Denmark’s biggest mini golf course. Read more: Visitdenmark.com/fyn

Fyn Tourism: Exploring Denmark’s Charming Island Escape 🇩🇰

Ulf Friis

  • December 29, 2023

As I sit down to write about Fyn tourism, I am filled with a sense of pride and joy. Fyn, an island located in Denmark, holds a special place in my heart. Being a Danish man, I have had the privilege of exploring the beauty and culture of this amazing destination. From its charming towns and stunning landscapes to its rich history and exquisite cuisine, Fyn is a treasure trove of experiences waiting to be discovered.

Charming Towns and Villages

One of the things that immediately captivates visitors to Fyn is its enchanting towns and villages. Take Odense, for instance, the birthplace of the renowned fairy-tale writer Hans Christian Andersen. Walking through the cobbled streets of Odense feels like stepping into a storybook, with its colorful half-timbered houses and picturesque gardens. As you stroll along, you can’t help but feel the magic of Andersen’s tales coming to life.

Venturing outside of Odense, you’ll find charming villages like Faaborg and Svendborg, each with its own unique character and allure. Faaborg, with its old-world charm and beautiful harbor, is a haven for artists and nature enthusiasts. In Svendborg, the sight of wooden ships bobbing in the harbor against the backdrop of pastel-colored buildings is nothing short of mesmerizing.

Exploring Nature’s Bounty

One of the things I love most about Fyn is its diverse landscape, which offers a wide range of outdoor activities for nature lovers. The island’s lush forests, rolling hills, and pristine coastline provide a perfect setting for hiking, cycling, and birdwatching.

  • Hiking through the Great Belt forests, breathing in the fresh air and listening to the sounds of nature, is a true delight for the senses.
  • Cycling along the South Fyn Archipelago Trail, with its stunning views of the sea and charming coastal villages, is an experience like no other.
  • Exploring the beautiful beaches and coves along the coastline, such as Enebærodde and Korshavn, offers a sense of tranquility and serenity that is hard to find elsewhere.

Immersing in Cultural Heritage

For history buffs and culture enthusiasts, Fyn is a treasure trove of heritage sites and museums that tell the story of Denmark’s rich past. One of the highlights of Fyn tourism is visiting Egeskov Castle, a fairytale-like Renaissance castle with stunning gardens and a fascinating collection of vintage cars and motorcycles.

Another must-visit is the Funen Village, an open-air museum that takes you back in time to experience rural life in 19th-century Denmark. The thatched-roof houses, working farms, and costumed interpreters give you a glimpse into the everyday lives of the island’s inhabitants centuries ago.

Sampling Culinary Delights

No visit to Fyn would be complete without indulging in the island’s culinary delights. From traditional Danish dishes to gourmet cuisine, Fyn offers a diverse and delectable food scene that caters to every palate.

For a taste of authentic Danish fare, head to a local inn or restaurant and savor classics like smørrebrød (open-faced sandwiches), frikadeller (meatballs), and æbleflæsk (pork with apples). If you’re a seafood lover, be sure to try the fresh catch of the day, such as herring, mackerel, or fried eel, which are staples in Fyn cuisine.

As I reflect on my experiences and adventures in Fyn, I am reminded of the simple joys of exploration and discovery. Whether you’re drawn to the island for its natural beauty, cultural heritage, or culinary delights, Fyn has something for everyone. It’s a place where you can immerse yourself in the magic of Danish hospitality and create lasting memories that will stay with you forever.

So, I invite you to be an explorer and adventurer, and let the charm of Fyn captivate your heart and soul. Come and experience the beauty of Denmark in all its glory, and let Fyn tourism be your gateway to an unforgettable journey.

Odense is the largest city on the island of Funen ("Fyn" in Danish) in Denmark . As Denmark's third-largest city, it offers the traveller a mixture of an exciting vibrant night-life, beautiful street-scapes, great shopping opportunities & a rich cultural heritage.

Understand [ edit ]

Odense is roughly in the centre of Funen , which lies between the larger Zealand island and the Jutland peninsula. The first recorded reference to the city dates back to 988 AD in a letter from the German Kaiser Otto III.

Some recent archaeological findings have indicated that a settlement has in fact been around since the Viking period. At that time, however, Odense was just the small centre of the Odin cult. In 1100, the first monastery, Saint Knud's was established by English Benedictine monks.

Until the middle of the 17th century, Odense enjoyed the position as a main trading-centre for the people from the surrounding areas. Local produce & livestock were exported from the city. However, a war with Sweden in the 1600s weakened the city's economy. This economic downturn continued until 1803 when a canal linking Odense with the Kattegat was opened. This swiftly changed Odense into a port city and over the next 100 years Odense quickly developed into the modern industrial city which it is today.

It has a population of about 178,000 people (2018), thus making it Denmark's 3rd largest city.

Odense is also the birthplace of the fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen, and the city proudly displays statues, parades and monuments in his memory. Andersen was born on 2 April 1805, in a tiny house on Munkemøllestræde, quite close to the cathedral. During his lifetime, Andersen created many famous fairy-tales which today are internationally famous. For example The Little Mermaid , The Ugly Duckling and The Snow Queen .

Get in [ edit ]

By plane [ edit ], odense airport [ edit ], copenhagen airport [ edit ].

From Copenhagen Airport take the train from the airport directly to Odense via Copenhagen or drive along road E20 across the Great Belt Bridge (note the road toll on the bridge).

Billund Airport [ edit ]

From Billund Airport , take the local bus to either Kolding or Vejle and then get a train from there to Odense. Trains depart roughly every 30 minutes during the day and every two hours after 01:00. The total trip is roughly 90 minutes.

fyn denmark tourist attractions

By train [ edit ]

DSB operates trains in and out of Odense. From Odense, you can take a direct train to many cities and towns throughout Denmark.

The trains run frequently and generally on time.

It's important that you have a valid ticket before you board the train, as it's not possible to buy tickets onboard.

Tickets to Odense are best purchased directly from DSB . For those planning ahead, you can get a good deal with the so-called Orange and Orange Fri tickets, available online only.

The trains generally offer very comfortable seating and drink vending machines onboard. For longer journeys, it's recommended that you buy food and beverages before you get on the train. If you travel 1st class on InterCity and InterCityLyn trains, there are free water, coffee, tea and snacks on the train.

When travelling on peak travel days or during rush hour, or if travelling in groups, it's advisable (but not mandatory) to reserve seats on the InterCity and InterCityLyn trains.

By car [ edit ]

Odense is in the centre of the island Funen ( da.Fyn ), and many Danes incorrectly consider it to be the centre of Denmark. The main highway between east ( Zealand ) and west ( Jutland ) Denmark, the E20, runs through the southern suburbs of the city. If you are driving from Germany, this highway branches of the highway from Germany (E45) right after the Kolding Ø exit. There is a toll for crossing the Great-Belt Bridge from Zealand to Funen, the cost is 235 jr one-way. As of 1 October 2023 a low emission zone has been introduced in Odense, see Driving in Denmark#Low Emission Zones .

By bus [ edit ]

The cream-coloured buses from FynBus travel to Odense from locations all over the island of Funen, Fredericia in Jutland , and Nykøbing on the island of Falster .

Regional buses arrive at and leave from the Odense Railway Center ( "Odense Banegård Center" ). The local city buses can be recognized from the regional buses by the length of the line number. Two-digit number lines are city buses while 3-digit numbers are regional and inter-city.

A map and schedule of available bus lines can be found on the Fynbus website which is partially available in English and German.

By yacht [ edit ]

Odense City has been made accessible to yachts by the construction of a 7-km-long canal from Odense Fjord to the old harbour. There are several marinas, however it is recommended that you make sure they have visitor berths before you arrive. You can also dock at marinas in Svendborg , Faaborg , Middelfart or Kerteminde , from which you should then take a train or bus to Odense.

Get around [ edit ]

fyn denmark tourist attractions

By foot [ edit ]

Most of Odense's attractions, bars, restaurants & shopping areas are very easily accessibly on foot. All of the city's main hotels and hostels are in the city centre or train station areas. As a general rule all of the major attractions in the centre are between 5 and 10 minutes of each other.

A major exception to this is 'The Funen Village' (Den Fynske Landsby), which is about a 45-minute walk along the river. Similarly the zoo is on the same route, and is roughly 30 minutes from the city centre. Both of these attractions are sign-posted all the way along the river.

By bike [ edit ]

Odense is known for its good bicycle infrastructure. There are bicycle lanes along most major roads in addition to many commuter bicycle paths separated from the road system.

If you have not brought your own bike, the company Donkey Republic rent out bikes through an app.

By taxi [ edit ]

Taxis are relatively abundant throughout the city, but they are quite pricey when compared to local buses. Areas which usually have a large amount of taxis waiting to pick up customers include, the taxi pick-up point at the railway station, outside the Rosengård centre and at Fisketorvet.

On a Friday or Saturday night taxis can be found all over the city. You can not hail a taxi on the street. You can ask in a bar/restaurant for them to get one sent to come pick you up, use the taxi companies app, website or ring to them. Taxis do cost more at night time.

By boat [ edit ]

fyn denmark tourist attractions

For those interested in a more relaxed break, a river boat (Odense Åfart) can be taken from the bridge in Munke Mose Park (Nyvestergade) to the Zoo and to the forest next to 'The Funen Village'. The journey, which takes around 30 minutes, is a very relaxing way of seeing Odense river, the Danish countryside on a summer day. Sometimes live jazz bands occasionally play on-board during the summer months.

Row-boats and paddle-boats can also be rented at the same location.

The buses from Fynbus are available all over Odense, and are fairly frequent. Almost all city buses passes through the Odense Railway Center ( "Odense Banegård Center" ) in the course of their route. All city buses cost 23 kr for trips in the city, or 24 kr for trips in the suburbs as well as trips between the city and the suburbs. A full day ticket is available for 40 kr. It is also possible to get an electronic voucher card which can be charged with money for travel within Funen. You can get this card for a refundable deposit of 50 kr and the trips in the city and suburbs using this card will cost 10 kr. Tickets may also be purchased online through the FynBus.dk webshop or app, from which during school holidays you can buy a special tourist day ticket priced at 50 kr for one person (adult or child) or 150 kr for a group of 4 people.

The inner city bus route number 10 is free of charge; it only goes in a short loop around the city centre which makes it useful as a quick sightseeing tour.

The regional train from Odense to Svendborg has a few stops in the Odense area. For example there is a stop at the picturesque Fruens Bøge area which is relatively near to The Funen Village. The regional train from Odense to Middelfart stops in Holmstrup which is a small village in the extreme western edge of the Odense municipality.

19 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Denmark

Written by Andrew Birbeck and Lura R. Seavey Updated Apr 13, 2023

Denmark's many charms have become apparent to a global audience, particularly in recent years. Scandinavia's "European" wing boasts glorious beaches, beautiful fairy-tale castles, lush forests, a temperate climate, friendly citizens, and an infectious joie de vivre among its many attractions.

Smash TV series Borgen made a star of Copenhagen's attractions — in particular, the magnificent parliament buildings at Christiansborg . Similarly, Danish/Swedish collaboration Bronen ( The Bridge ) showed the world the Oresund Bridge, a stunning feat of engineering, which links the two countries by road and rail. For lovers of literature, a visit to Odense , the hometown of master storyteller Hans Christian Andersen , is a must.

Denmark's eco-credentials are obvious throughout the land. In Copenhagen, the bicycle takes precedence over the car and is arguably the best way to go sightseeing in this compact, picturesque city. On top of all this, the food is legendary — Danish fine dining paves the way for the best of Scandinavian cuisine.

Find your next favorite place to visit with our list of the top attractions in Denmark.

Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen

When visiting Copenhagen , many visitors make a beeline for the iconic recreation space at Tivoli Gardens .

Dating from 1843, Tivoli is the inspiration behind the world-famous Disney theme parks, and here, you'll find a huge range of attractions including a roller coaster, roundabouts, puppet theaters, restaurants, cafés, gardens, food pavilions, and even a Moorish-styled concert hall.

Known across the world, Tivoli has appeared in numerous movies and is a true symbol of the city. At night, firework displays illuminate the sky, and in winter, the gardens are adorned with lights for the Christmas season. During the summer, you can catch free rock concerts on Friday nights.

Christiansborg Palace, Copenhagen

On the tiny island of Slotsholmen in the center of Copenhagen, you'll find the Danish seat of government, Christiansborg Palace . It's home to the Parliament, the Prime Minister's Office, and the Supreme Court, and several wings are still used by the Royal household.

Among the most spectacular of the viewable areas are the Royal Reception Rooms, decadently ornate spaces that are still used today for royal receptions and galas. If you like seeing what goes on behind the scenes to keep things running smoothly, head to the Royal Kitchen to get a glimpse of what it was like to prepare a banquet for hundreds of guests nearly a century ago.

Equine enthusiasts will want to take a tour of the Royal Stables, including original buildings that survived the massive fires that destroyed both Christian VI's 1740 palace and its 1828 successor. Along with getting a peek at some of the world's most pampered horses, you will see historic horse-drawn vehicles, including the 1778 Queen Dowager Juliane Marie's state coach and the Golden State Coach, which was built in 1840 and is adorned with 24-carat gold.

Long before the site was home to royal residences, Bishop Absalon built fortifications on this spot in 1167. If you want to plunge deeper into history, you can explore the excavated ruins of the original castle, which are located beneath the palace.

If you appreciate ecclesiastical architecture, be sure to see the Palace Chapel, which draws inspiration from the Pantheon in Rome.

Since the palace is still in active use by the royal family, it's wise to check the opening hours to ensure you can visit the areas you're most interested in.

Address: Prins Jørgens Gård 1, 1218, Copenhagen

National Museum of Denmark (Nationalmuseet), Copenhagen

A 10-minute stroll from Tivoli Gardens leads to the National Museum (Nationalmuseet) , which delves into Danish history and culture. This museum displays an impressive collection of Danish artifacts, including a 2,000-year-old sun chariot, Danish porcelain and silver, and Romanesque and Gothic church trimmings. Other collections highlight clothing from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as antique furniture.

Supplementing this journey back through Danish history is an excellent ethnographic exhibition with items from Greenland, Asia, and Africa, among others. At the Children's Museum , kids will find plenty of things to do. They can dress up in period costumes, climb aboard a Viking ship, and visit a 1920s-style classroom.

Old house at Frilandsmuseet

Occupying 35 hectares are authentic farmhouses, agricultural buildings, homes, and mills from across the country in this living history museum.

There are also ancient breeds of domestic animals, magnificent historic gardens to wander through, atmospheric old houses from Schleswig-Holstein and Sweden, as well as numerous picnic sites. You can even take a horse-drawn carriage around the grounds.

The National Gallery of Denmark (Statens Museum for Kunst), Copenhagen

The National Gallery of Denmark houses the country's largest collection of Danish art. The original exhibits were once housed at Christiansborg but moved to the current location in the late 19th century. A gigantic extension has not only significantly extended the space but allows natural light to flood into the interior of the museum.

Covering more than 700 years of European and Scandinavian art, the museum displays paintings by the Dutch Masters, Picasso, and Edvard Munch among others. Not surprisingly, fine collections of Danish art are also on display. The café is particularly pleasant and a great place to unwind and soak up the surroundings.

If you're on a budget or just quickly passing through, you will appreciate the admission-free areas , which include nine themed playgrounds; three outdoor squares; and the Tree of Life, a 15-meter LEGO tree filled with details.

You can also choose to buy admission to explore the Experience Zones, each representing the classic brick's colors: red for creativity; green for role-playing; blue for cognitive challenges; and yellow for emotions. Visitors also have a chance to learn all about the history of LEGO and its founders.

Nyhavn, Copenhagen

The star of countless images and postcards of the city, Nyhavn (New Harbor) is a great place to stroll or grab a slice of Copenhagen café culture. Located to the rear of Amalienborg Palace, this was once a disreputable stretch of dockland but has been given a new lease of life with its multi-colored houses, restaurants, and tall ships (some of which are museums) dotting the quayside.

Nyhavn is now a particularly charming quarter and consequently a major Copenhagen attraction for tourists and locals alike. If you're feeling adventurous, you can catch a hydrofoil to Sweden from here or grab a pleasant harbor cruise to see the sights.

Kronborg Slot, Helsingør

Kronborg Castle is not only the setting of Shakespeare's Hamlet but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site . Consequently, it scores top billing on Helsingor's list of must-see sights. Even those with just a passing interest in the bard will surely want to visit. This imposing structure is clearly visible as you approach it, so you can't really miss it.

The present incarnation dates from 1640, although several other fortresses preceded it. Serving as a garrison for a century or more, the castle was renovated in 1924.

In the South Wing, you'll find the Castle Chapel, which survived a fire in 1629 and has a magnificent Renaissance interior with German wood carvings. The North Wing contains the great Ballroom or Knights' Hall, while exquisite tapestries are displayed in the West Wing.

Address: Kronborg 2 C, 3000 Helsingør

Egeskov Castle, Kvarnstrup

Fairy-tale Egeskov Castle lies in a beautiful setting less than 30 minutes' drive from Odense and is the best-preserved moat castle in Europe. This superb Renaissance structure as seen today was completed in 1554 and originally built for defense.

Over the centuries, the castle has changed hands many times, and later became a model farm. In 1959, the grounds opened to the public, and much renovation and development have taken place since. The grounds are also home to specialty collections, including the Vintage Car Museum and the Camping Outdoor Museum .

Other things to do here include a treetop walk and Segway tours . The Banqueting Hall is simply magnificent.

A visit to Egeskov is a wonderful day trip from Copenhagen, particularly for families.

Viking ships at the Viking Ship Museum

The Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde gives tourists the unique opportunity to see firsthand how the Vikings constructed their boats, as well as observe how modern shipbuilders are restoring and repairing the vessels that have been unearthed.

The boatyard, which is located next to the museum, uses traditional methods to create reproductions and bring old boats back to life. Inside the museum, you will learn about the Viking Age and the central role that maritime life played in the culture and survival of the people.

The central exhibit, Viking Ship Hall, features five ships once used by the Vikings to form a barrier on Roskilde Fjord . After extensive and painstaking underwater excavations, the ships were restored and are now on display.

One of the museum's newest additions is the high-tech "Climb Aboard" experience, where tourists are fully immersed in life aboard a Viking ship. This interactive experience is complete with costumes for those who want to really dive in, as well as the opportunity to explore the ship's rooms and supplies and even experience sensory changes as the journey takes you through day and night, rough seas and calm, and all sorts of weather.

Each detail, from the architecture and roads to businesses and domestic lives of the costumed interpreters, illustrates how life has changed over time and the ways that some traditions have remained sacred.

In addition to the living history neighborhoods, Den Gamle By is home to several individual museums including Musaeum , the Danish Poster Museum, Toy Museum , the Jewellery Box , Aarhus Story , and the Gallery of Decorative Arts .

Nearby, in the suburb of Højbjerg, the Moesgaard Museum delves even further back in time with in-depth exhibits on the progression of cultures in Denmark through the Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, and Viking Ages, plus an exhibit about medieval Denmark.

You can't visit Denmark without being aware of Hans Christian Andersen. His fairy tales and stories are woven into the fabric of Danish society. Listening posts and interactive installations bring the writer's words to life, and the domed hall is decorated with scenes from Andersen's autobiography Story of My Life . To the southwest of Odense Cathedral , in Munkemøllestræde, you'll find Hans Christian Andersen's childhood home ( Andersen's Barndomshjem ), which is also part of the museum.

Amalienborg Palace, Copenhagen

In the Frederiksstaden quarter of Copenhagen, you'll find Amalienborg Palace Museum and its tranquil gardens by the water. Originally built as residences for the nobility, the four palaces face the square. The Danish Royal Family took occupancy after a fire at Christiansborg in 1794, and the palace remains their winter home.

The identical palaces form an octagon, and it's claimed the design is based on plans for a square in Paris that later became the Place de la Concorde. Built in a light Rococo style, the buildings combine both German and French stylistic elements. The Soldiers of the Royal Guard , in their bearskins and blue uniforms, are a particular draw for visitors.

Roenne Harbor on the island of Bornholm

This lovely island in the Baltic Sea is a top place to visit for both foreign and domestic visitors, popular for its mild weather, lovely beaches, and extensive walking and cycling trails. One of Bornholm's top tourist attractions is the site of the Hammershus Castle Ruins , a fortress built in the mid-13 th century to defend the island.

The island is also home to several museums, including the Museum of Art (Kunstmuseum) in Gudhjem. The building is a stunning piece in its own right, set overlooking the water towards Christiansoe. This museum has a collection of fine art, as well as sculptures, including several that are positioned outdoors on the grounds.

Just outside Gudhjem, tourists can visit the Melstedgård Agricultural Museum .

The Bornholm Museum in Rønne features a varied collection that encompasses both cultural and natural history. Exhibits include artifacts related to the island's seafaring history and a selection of art spanning from Viking times to the present.

The stunning Frederiksborg Palace was built by King Christian IV in the early 17th century and has hosted Denmark's Museum of National History since 1878. The museum's collections focus on artwork that illustrates the country's history and includes a robust assortment of painted portraits, photography, and prints.

The museum also includes a tour of the castle's interior, where you can explore the rooms that once hosted royalty and nobles. The palace's exterior and grounds include highlights like the Neptune Fountain, a pair of round towers once occupied by the court scribe and sheriff, and a beautiful relief depicting the deities Mars and Venus, which is located on the façade of the Audience House.

Tourists can also freely explore the various paths and gardens surrounding this Renaissance palace.

Oresund Bridge, Copenhagen

Decades in the planning and often controversial, the Oresund Bridge has quickly become a Scandinavian icon. The bridge is around 10 kilometers from Copenhagen, and you can either drive across or take the train. On the Danish side, it starts out as a tunnel so as not to interfere with flights to and from adjacent Copenhagen Airport.

This eight-kilometer structure opened in 1999 and now links the island of Zealand, Denmark's largest island and home to Copenhagen, to the southwest coast of Sweden, specifically to the port of Malmo, Sweden's third largest city. Fans of Scandi-noir will know that the Oresund Bridge has recently gained much global infamy as the central focus of the smash hit Danish/Swedish TV drama The Bridge .

The Forge at Funen Village Open Air Museum, Copenhagen

Funen Village is an open-air living history museum that brings 19th-century Denmark to life, recreating the world that surrounded writer Hans Christian Andersen as he penned his iconic fairy tales. Complete with authentic half-timbered farmhouses with thatched roofs constructed using authentic materials and methods, the museum offers visitors a glimpse into the past.

Within the village, you can explore the farms, homes, and workshops, and interact with the living history interpreters to learn about every aspect of life. Fully working farms grow the crops that would have been grown at the time, using methods like horse-drawn plows to cultivate the land. There is a variety of livestock, including working horses, dairy cows and goats, sheep, pigs, and chickens, and in the Children's Village, youngsters are encouraged to interact with the animals.

In addition to learning about farm life, visitors can watch cooking demonstrations and household activities like turning wool into yarn and clothing. There is also a working blacksmith shop and other craftspeople who help the village remain entirely self-reliant.

Walkway through a salt marsh in the Wadden Sea National Park

Denmark's largest national park is also the world's largest continuous system of mud flats and intertidal sand, containing both salt and freshwater environments, as well as beaches and wetlands. This beautiful natural area is among the top tourist attractions in Esbjerg .

The Wadden Sea National Park sits at the midway point of the Eastern Atlantic migratory routes, making this an ideal place for bird-watching. The waters just off Esbjerg Harbour are also home to the country's largest population of spotted seals , making this an ideal place for nature lovers.

While in the area, history buffs will want to check out the Ribe Viking Museum (VikingeCenter) to see its collections of authentic artifacts and reconstructed settlements. Visitors can explore the living history museum to see what daily life was like for these fascinating peoples, with opportunities to participate in hands-on activities.

The Round Tower (Rundetårn), Copenhagen

Well worth scaling for the excellent panoramic views, the Round Tower (Rundetårn) is 36 meters high and was built as an observatory in 1642.

Here, you'll find a small collection connected with the famous Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe; however, the highlight for most is the viewing platform reached by a spiral ramp. A glass floor hovers 25 meters above the ground, and not only can you gaze out over the rooftops of Copenhagen city, but also peer down into the castle's core.

A short walk through the surrounding old town takes you to Gråbrødretorv , one of the city's most picturesque squares.

The Farøe Islands

The Kingdom of Denmark also encompasses two autonomous countries: the far-flung Farøe Islands and Greenland . Lying some 600 kilometers west of the Norwegian coast, the Farøe Islands (Sheep Islands) is an archipelago of 18 remote islands. Landscapes range from steep rocky coasts, meadows, and mist-cloaked hills to fjords that bite deep inland.

The Gulf Stream moderates the temperatures on land and at sea and attracts a diversity of marine life, including seals, whales, and many species of fish. Anglers come here to cast their lines in the crisp, clear waters, and birders can admire some of the 300-plus species including puffins and guillemots.

A boat trip to the Vestmanna bird cliffs is a highlight. The Farøe Islands also boast a lively music scene with many festivals in the summer.

To the north and northeast of Eysturoy , one of the archipelago's largest islands, lie many sizable and smallish islands. Blessed with a natural harbor surrounded by emerald hills, Klaksvik on Bordoy is the second-largest town in the Farøes. Tourist attractions include the history museum and the Christian's Church (Christians-kirkjan) with a boat hanging from its ceiling, the only one of four to return safely on a stormy winter's night in 1923.

To access the Farøes, you can fly to the airport on the island of Vågar year-round from Copenhagen or hop aboard a ferry from several Danish ports to Torshavn , the capital, on the island of Streymoy .
