Lodhi Garden is a famous tourist spot in Delhi and also a historical heritage site. The luscious garden was constructed in the 15th century during the Lodhi reign. The two prominent structures of the garden are the tomb of Sikandar Lodhi and Mohammad Shah. It also houses the Bara Gumbad and Shisha Gumbad in its premises.

The Bara Gumbad lying in the middle of the garden is actually a gateway to three adjoining mosques built during the period of Sikandar Lodhi in 1494. To the opposite side of the Bara Gumbad lies the Glass dome built from glazed tiles. The tomb of Mohammad Shah is the oldest structure here which follows Hindu-Islamic style.

The tomb resides in an octagonal complex and consists of an arched central dome, verandas, and few other ancient structures. The Garden is a famous picnic spot and also a part of heritage walk for school students to gain knowledge of Indian history.

Mughal Garden

Mughal Garden is an example of beautiful creativity with a fusion of British and Mughal style. The garden sprawls across an area of 13 acres and was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. The garden is inspired by the Mughal style architecture which is highly reflected in the canals, terraces, and fountains.

The garden has three sections known as Pearl Garden, Butterfly Garden, and Circular Garden. The scenic beauty of the garden is extremely gorgeous housing 4 waterways and their intersection point is decorated with a lotus-shaped fountain made of red sandstone.

Mohammed shah tomb at lodhi gardens.

Built by Ala-ud-din Alam Shah as a tribute to Mohammed Shah, third emperor of the Sayyid dynasty, this is the earliest of the tombs here. It was built in 1444. Located in the southwestern part of Lodhi Gardens, this tomb can be seen from the road as well. This octagonal shaped tomb has a chamber in the middle which is surrounded by verandah. It has three arched openings. The carvings on the domes along with crowning lotus are worth noticing. It has eight graves while the one in the center is said to be of Muhammad Shah.

Sikandar Lodi Tomb at Lodhi Gardens

Built by Ibrahim Lodi in 1517, the last ruler of Lodhi Dynasty, tomb of Sikander Lodi is located on northwestern corner of Lodhi Gardens, on the north of Sheesh Gumbad. It has some similarities with the tomb of Mohammed Shah and Mubarak Shah, although this tomb doesn’t have chhatris. It is surrounded by a square shaped garden.

Bara Gumbad at Lodhi Gardens

Built in 1490 during the reign of Sultan Sikander Lodhi, Bara Gumbad is one of the biggest tombs here and is believed to the gateway for other nearby mosque by some of the historians. It is square shaped tomb with a massive dome. It is located northeastern side of Muhammad Shah’s tomb. The interior of the tomb consists of stucco work and beautiful paintings. Even though there is no grave inside this tomb, it is still believed that someone of high rank, who is still unidentified, must have be buried here. The Bara Gumbad Masjid is located just next to the tomb.

Sheesh Gumbad at Lodhi Gardens

Located a few meters away from Bara Gumbad, Sheesh Gumbad presents a mix of Hindu and Islamic architecture. Also known as the glazed dome, owing to its blue tinted ornamentation, this tomb is quite similar to Bara Gumbad in its structure. The dome of the tomb was originally decorated with blue titles while the interior is adorned with floral motifs and inscriptions from Quran.

Athpula at Lodhi Gardens

Located on the eastern side of Sikander Lodi’s tomb is the Athpula. It is said to be built during the reign Mughal emperor Akbar. It is a stone bridge consisting of arches and pillars over a small waterway in the garden.

Lodi Gardens timings are from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM from April to September. From October to March, the garden is open from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM . It is open on all days of the week. There is no entry fee and it is open to everyone.

How to reach Lodhi Garden Delhi

Lodhi Gardens can be easily reached by road as well as metro rail. The nearest metro station to Lodhi Gardens is Jorbagh metro station on the yellow line that starts from Samaypur badli station to Huda City Centre Metro Station. This station is just 1.1 km away from the Gardens.

Another nearby station to Lodhi Gardens is the JLN metro station on the violet line that connects Raja Nahar Singh To Kashmere Gate Metro Station. From there, Lodhi Gardens is located at a distance of 1.4 km. Tourists can also reach here by local city buses, auto-rickshaws and taxis.

Lodi Garden

Delhi's plentiful parks provide a refreshing respite from the city, and Lodhi Garden is the most extensive. This vast 90 acre expanse is peppered with the remains of a variety of historical monuments from the 14th century Tughlaq dynasty (which ruled the pre-Mughal Delhi Sultanate) up to the 16th century Mughal period, making it a popular place for sightseeing as well as relaxing. The British developed Lodhi Garden in 1936 as a landscaped setting for the monuments, which were surrounded by a village called Khairpur. Lady Willingdon (wife of the then Governor-General of India, Marquess of Willingdon) designed the garden. It was called Lady Willingdon Park in her honor but the Indian government aptly renamed it Lodhi Garden following independence from the British in 1947. The name reflects the garden's prominent monuments from the Lodhi dynasty, the last ruling dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate.

Lodhi Garden was given a major makeover in 1968 by American landscape architect Garrett Eckbo and acclaimed architect Joseph Allen Stein, who also designed many iconic landmark buildings near it. The works included the addition of a glass house for plant cultivation and a lake with a fountain. Other specialist sections, such as a bonsai park and rose garden, were later created in the garden.

A mysterious turret is regarded as the garden's oldest structure, although not much is known about it. Historians think it might be part of a fortified walled compound belonging to the Tughlaq dynasty (1320 to 1413). Unfortunately, the wall no longer exists.

Most of the monuments in Lodhi Garden date back to the succeeding Sayyid and Lodi dynasties, when the area was their royal burial ground in the 15th and 16th centuries. The earliest of its tombs is that of Sultan Muhammad Shah Sayyid, the third ruler of the Sayyid dynasty. His reign lasted from 1434 until his death in 1444. The tomb was built in 1444 by his son, Alauddin Alam Shah Sayyid, and is the dynasty's only remaining legacy in the garden.

Not long after the death of Muhammad Shah Sayyid, the Lodhi dynasty took control of the Delhi Sultanate in 1451, with founder Bahlul Lodhi easily displacing the ineffective Sayyid king. It was during the reign of his son Sikander Lodhi, from 1489 to 1517, that the garden's most prominent monuments were constructed. These are the Bara Gumbad (big dome) complex, Sheesh Gumbad (mirror dome), and Sikandar Lodhi's tomb.

The Lodhi dynasty and the Delhi Sultanate came to an end in 1526, when invading Emperor Babur defeated Sikander Lodhi's son Ibrahim during the First Battle of Panipat and established Mughal rule in India.

The new Mughal emperors left less of an impression on Lodhi Garden, as they did their tomb building in grand style elsewhere. (Emperor Babur's tomb is located near Kabul in Afghanistan, Humayun's Tomb sits a couple of miles east of the garden, and Akbar's tomb is on the outskirts of Agra where he had his capital). However, the garden does have a rare surviving structure from the golden age of the Mughal Empire, made during the reign of Emperor Akbar (1556 to 1605). This sturdy arched stone bridge, called Athpula because of its eight pillars, was constructed across a tributary of the Yamuna River (now a lake).

Restoration of the monuments in Lodhi Garden has been ongoing over the last decade, and is currently being carried out by the Archeological Survey of India.

How to Get There

Lodhi Garden is situated between Safdurjung's Tomb and Khan Market in the heart of the southern part of New Delhi, bordering Lodhi Estate. By road, it can be reached in about 20 minutes from Connaught Place in New Delhi . If you don't have your own vehicle, auto rickshaws and app-based cab services such as Uber are popular options. Alternatively, it's possible to take the Delhi Metro Train.

The garden's main entrance, known as Gate 1 or Ashoka Gate, is located on Lodhi Road. It has free parking and toilet facilities. The closest Metro train station to this entrance is Jor Bagh on the Yellow Line. From there, it's about a 10 minute walk. Some Delhi Transport Corporation buses stop right in front of this entrance.

Lodhi Garden has another entrance (Gate 4) on the Khan Market side, approximately 15 minutes walk from the Khan Market Metro Station on the Violet Line. There are a number of smaller entrance gates around the periphery of the garden as well.

The garden is free to enter. It's open daily from sunrise (5 a.m. or 6 a.m. depending on the time of the year) until sunset at about 8 p.m. Avoid Sundays though, if you're searching for serenity. Locals flock there to hang out and it does get crowded.

What to See and Do There

Health-conscious Delhi residents start their day early at Lodhi Garden with activities such as yoga, jogging and cycling. If you'd like to participate in yoga there, book a comprehensive two-hour morning class conducted by Vidhi of Awaken Inner Buddha Yoga and Meditation .

The monuments are the prime attraction in the garden though. If you're particularly interested in history, you may wish to visit them on a guided walking tour. One of the best options is this Legacy of Sayyids and Lodhis tour offered by Delhi Walks. Delhi Heritage Walks also conducts periodic group walking tours through Lodhi Garden (or take one of their private tours).

Enter Lodhi Garden from the main gate and turn left, and you'll reach the tomb of Muhammad Shah Sayyid. It features an octagonal design, and elegant Indo-Islamic architecture with small Hindu-style chhatris (dome canopied pavilions) surrounding its distinctive central dome. There are other graves inside the tomb, presumably belonging to family members.

Head back along the path, and you'll come across a small 18th century mosque between Muhammad Shah Sayyid's tomb and the Bada Gumbad complex. This complex, which sits on a raised platform, is one of the largest and finest Lodhi-era monuments in Delhi. Its imposing domed principal structure is believed to have been a gateway to the attached mosque, built in 1494, as it doesn't have a grave. Look closely to admire the amazingly intricate decorative detail on both buildings. On the corner of the mosque, there's also a minaret that resembles Qutub Minar in Delhi . Opposite the mosque is an arched pavilion that was apparently a guesthouse. It's known as Mehman Khana.

You'll see Sheesh Gumbad facing the Bada Gumbad complex. This building contains a number of unidentified graves and some historians claim it could be the tomb of Lodhi dynasty founder Bahlul Lodhi, who died in 1489. The glazed blue tiles, which once covered much of its exterior including the dome, are a highlight.

Sikandar Lodhi's tomb sits to the north of Sheesh Gumbad. The tomb itself isn't really impressive in comparison to the others. In fact, it looks quite like that of Muhammad Shah Sayyid, minus the chhatris on the roof. However, it's enclosed by a substantial protective wall that has an elaborate gateway.

To the right of Lodhi's tomb is the lake with Mughal-era Athpula spanning part of it. If you exit from this end of Lodhi Garden, near Khan Market, look out for the old wrought-iron gate that opens onto Rajesh Pilot Marg. Its stone pillars have historic inscriptions from the inauguration of the garden, stating "The Lady Willingdon Park" and "9th April, 1936."

There are a few minor monuments in the vicinity of entrance Gate 3, on the western side of the garden. The turret is on one side of it, and the ruins of a late Mughal-era wall gateway and small mosque are on the other.

In addition to the monuments, assorted attractions for nature lovers are spread throughout the garden. These include the National Bonsai Park (near Gate 1), the glasshouse (beside Muhammad Shah Sayyid's tomb), a butterfly park and herb garden (around the mosque between Muhammad Shah Sayyid's tomb and the Bada Gumbad complex), a rose garden (next to the wall gateway and mosque) and duck pond (on the lake). Lodhi Garden is home to almost 30 species of birds too.

Feeling hungry? Have a meal at Lodi - The Garden Restaurant adjoining Gate 1. It serves eclectic global cuisine in its atmospheric garden. There are plenty of other great places to eat in neighboring Lodhi Colony and Nizamuddin , as well as hip Khan Market.

Historical Background of Lodhi Garden 

The history of Lodhi Gardens dates back to the 15th century. The place was initially meant to serve as the resting ground for two important Islamic rulers of India. The tomb of Mohammad Shah, a ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, was erected by his son, Ala-ud-din Alam Shah in the year 1444. Taking him as an inspiration, Ibrahim Lodi, the son of famous ruler Sikander Lodi, built a tomb for his father in the same place in 1517. Both these tombs are the perfect examples of splendid Indo-Islamic architecture.

 After a few decades, when Emperor Akbar took control of Delhi, he turned Lodhi Garden into an observatory and had a library built in the space. 

Seeing how the spot has become an important tool for supporting the regal activities, several people started coming together to reside near the place. Slowly, two villages developed near the tombs and the observatory. When East India Company colonised the country, the villagers were asked to vacate and the place was renovated into a garden. 

Lady Willingdon, the wife of the Marquess of Willingdon, put in tremendous efforts to renovate the spot and turn it into a garden that would resemble the serene parks of England without losing the native charm of the Islamic era. That’s why, Lodhi Garden was initially known as ‘Lady Willingdon Garden’.

After India attained independence in 1947, the green oasis was renamed ‘Lodhi Garden’. It was renovated again in 1968 by Joseph Stein who also added a beautiful glass house to the garden. 

Architectural Highlights in Lodhi Garden 

Lodhi Garden is the best architectural delight that you must explore when you visit Delhi. Once you enter the garden, right in the middle, you will find the Bara Gumbad. This is a dome built in Indo-Islamic style and is believed to serve as the entrance to the mosque. Opposite the Bara Gumbad is the Sheesh Gumbad. The word ‘Sheesh’ means mirror and the dome gets its name because of its polished glazed-tile surface that can efficiently reflect light. 

There are some unidentified graves in Sheesh Gumbad. Most probably, they belong to the important members or loyal administrative heads of the Lodi dynasty. 

Travellers will also find remnants of a stream which may once have joined the flow of River Yamuna. Next to this is the tomb of Sikander Lodi. With its magnificent domes and enclosed battlements, it’s a visual treat. You can see that Sikander Lodi’s tomb is inspired by Mohammad Shah’s tomb which is present in the same garden. 

Mohammad Shah’s tomb has an octagonal base and a wide central dome surrounded by smaller domes. The lotus motif at the top is a skillfully carved attraction. There are Islamic carvings on the plastered outer walls that narrate the importance of Islam and Allah. 

Lastly, tourists can see the enchanting beauty of the Athpula Bridge which was built during the reign of Emperor Akbar. This bridge has a large central arch along with six other smaller arches.

Lodhi Garden is a well-landscaped 90-acre space that has lush green and well-manicured lawns where you can enjoy a leisurely evening or plan fun picnics with your loved ones. The carefully curated plantings add more natural glamour to the place and you can see several indigenous and exotic species of plants here. The shrubs are trimmed to match the height of the plants and they beautifully line the walking paths. Lastly, you will find the towering trees that add the much-needed green canopies to keep Lodhi Garden cool and pleasant throughout the year. 

You will also find certain medicinal herbs in Lodhi Garden that are used in making traditional ayurvedic medicines for curing ailments. And then there is the Lodhi Garden Lake. It is a hangout spot for birds and you can see migratory avians during the winter and summer seasons. 

Lodhi garden is spread across a very vast area and requires visitors to walk for long distances. It is very easy to get tired. We suggest that you carry a bottle of water and some electrolytes, even during the winter or monsoon months. The water facilities and washrooms are present at the entrance so it will be a challenge to walk back all the way if you want to fetch a glass of water to quench your thirst. 

Also, we are certain you’d not want to go back to the beginning when there’s so much to explore ahead! 

Lodhi Garden Visiting Information

The Lodhi Garden remains open all year round and invites both national and international visitors to witness its regal charm. There is no entry fee to explore the garden and people carrying still cameras or video recorders need not pay any additional fee either. 

You will see that a lot of local Delhi schools and educational institutions from the neighbouring cities bring their students to explore Lodhi Garden. This not only proves to be the best recreational break but will also turn out to be a learning experience for young minds. They can see for themselves how the Mughal, Sayyid and the Lodhi dynasties have established the base to build one of the finest gardens in the country.

The visiting timings of the Lodhi Garden differ during different months. From April to September, you can visit the place from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM. From October to March, the garden remains open from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM. 

During the summer and monsoon months, Lodhi Garden opens sooner because the sun rises around 5:00 AM and the visitors will have enough natural light to explore the surroundings of the garden. This is not the same during the winter season when the sun ascends at later hours. That is why, you see the change in timings during different months. 

Things to see and do at the Lodhi Gardens

Explore the tombs – The first and foremost thing to do at Lodhi Gardens is to explore the tombs of the two Islamic rulers along with the Gumbads and mosque. These are the main monumental delights that will give you a glimpse of the past and fascinate you with their skilled construction. 

Athpula Bridge – You can spend some time at the Athpula Bridge which overlooks Lodhi Lake and has a very soothing atmosphere all year round. You will also see why this construction played a very important role in Akbar’s observatory. 

Leisurely walks – Take leisurely walks or find a peaceful spot to sit and relax amidst the lush greenery, trees, and flowering plants. You will hear the melodious chirping of the birds throughout the day and it feels like you’ve been embraced by nature itself.

Heritage walks – There are local tourist guides and institutions that help you hire guides. The history buffs can employ these people to learn more about the historical significance and architectural features of Lodhi Gardens and its monuments. 

Picnics – Lodhi Garden is the best place to go for picnics! Pack your basket with delicious snacks and sandwiches, grab that picnic blanket and set out to enjoy quality time with your loved ones amidst the royal charm of this beautiful garden. 

Photography – From blooming flowers to historic structures with awe-inspiring architecture, there’s everything in Lodhi Gardens. You can bring your cameras and videocams to click snaps and record videos that you can revisit at a later time. You will also see a lot of people doing pre-wedding shoots in this stunning location. 

National Bonsai Par k – The National Bonsai Park is present within the Lodhi Gardens. As soon as you enter the place, you will find the park on the right side. If you are not looking keenly, you might even miss the small entrance that leads to the stunning display of bonsai plants from all corners of the world. Here, you will see bonsais of different ages, colours and sizes along with boards that have all the information you need to know about each of these natural beauties. 

Attend Events – Many important cultural and literature events are conducted in and around Lodhi Gardens. You can coincide your trip with one of these dates to explore the garden and also attend the events. For instance, film festivals, yoga classes and artist meet-ups are conducted frequently here.

Location and how to reach Lodhi Garden?

Lodhi Garden is located in South Delhi. It is present on Lodhi Road, which is between Khan Market and Safdarjung Tomb. You can cover both of these places as well while visiting Lodhi Garden. There are other important tourist attractions like Rashtrapathi Bhavan, Humayun’s Tomb, India Gate, National Zoological Park and Purana Khila which are less than four kilometres from Lodhi Garden. 

You can reach Delhi by taking a flight to Indira Gandhi International Airport which is 18.3 kms away from Lodhi Garden. Alternatively, it is possible to take a train and get down at Delhi Railway Station which is 14 kms away from the garden. Once, you reach Delhi, you can use the local metro routes and reach Lodhi Garden without any hassle. 

The nearest metro stations to Lodhi Garden are Jorbagh Metro Station (800 mts) and JLN Stadium Metro Station (1.5 kms). Jorbagh and Lok Kalyan Marg Metro Station (1.1 kms) will be the best options if you are travelling on the yellow line while JLN Stadium and even Khan Market Metro Station (1.1 kms) can be ideal points of drop if you are taking trains on the violet line. 

You will easily find autos that will take you to Lodhi Garden and some visitors also prefer to get down at Jorbagh and take a walk to the gardens while exploring the surroundings. 

Book your accommodations at hotels in Delhi in advance, preferably those that are close to Lodhi Garden to save time on commuting. This way, you will be able to spend more time amidst nature.

5. Buddha Jayanti Park Located in the Southern Delhi region, this park was built on the 2,500th anniversary of Lord Buddha’s birth and thus the name. This park’s main element is the Buddha state inaugurated on an artificial island in the middle of a waterway. This park covers 81 acres of land and was built in the mod of 20th century. The park holds more than 100 species of trees and numerous types of shrubs. The park holds a small palm garden, where different species of palm trees are grown in a systematic aesthetic manner. If you visit during December or January, the Rose Garden in the park will be filled with different colors of roses. 1.2 acres of this park is dedicated to cactus ecosystem. Contrary to the name, this traditional Mughal Garden is actually a British garden. The garden is divided into three regions in shapes. The gardens are called as Butterfly garden, Pearl garden and Circular garden. The garden has a lotus shaped fountain made with red sandstone and four waterways. The garden is filled with different types of plants like rose viscaria, sweet William, marigold, bougainvillea and others.

• Location: Rastrapati Bhavan, New Delhi
• Opening Hours: 9.30 AM to 4 PM. Mughal Garden remains close on Monday. This park is open to general public only in the month of February and March throughout the year.

10. Japanese Garden

This is the largest gardens with five lakes in it. Apart from cliché park activities like strolling, jogging, picnic and others, there is a small playground for children. Visiting the park during sunrise or sunset has an additional aesthetic factor to it.

Swarn Jayanti Park AKA the Japanese park is famous for its clean lake with colorful boats and picnic spots. The park region is surrounded by several malls and thus, the park is always crowded with tourists and locals. If you are visiting during winter, you can spot storks or egrets along the lake side.

Lodhi Garden in New Delhi is unique. It not only carries a few eras of Delhi’s history in its folds but also is one of the rare historical places, that are living. This is not a place where only tourists come, walk around, click pictures, and go back. The Garden is very much an integral part of the life of Delhi’s people.

Those who are fortunate to be living in its vicinity probably use it as their everyday walking garden. Young couples use it to spend time together, and other Dilliwallahs make a one-off visit to sit and breathe the fresh air here. History buffs come here to see the Lodi-era tombs and mosques. Architects come to study the architecture of that time.

Lodhi Garden – Places to visit in Delhi

These days the gardens are the favorite haunt of photographers. They come here to click the picturesque locations, trees, and birds. Film-makers use it to depict the backdrop of Delhi. Master storytellers like Khushwant Singh sat here and wrote novels such as The Sunset Club set entirely in these gardens. Often called the lungs of Delhi, most people come here to spend some time with nature. Situated enviably between the Khan Market and Lodhi Road, it is easily accessible from both sides.

Going by the aura around Lodhi Garden, I expected it to be big, but it is actually a mid-sized park spread over about 90 acres. There were two villages that existed around the monuments till the early 20th century, one of them was called Khairpur.

History of Lodhi Garden

In 1936, the place was landscaped and the garden was created. It was named Lady Willingdon Garden , after the wife of the then governor-general of India. After independence, gardens were named after the dynasty whose remains still adorn it.

The Garden was re-landscaped in 1968 and a glasshouse was added to it. It has a natural terrain that goes up and down at places with big and small monuments punctuating the abundant nature. It has small and not-so-small ponds with flowers and birds and a Bonsai garden.

Lodhi Garden Walking Trail

My walk started from the Khan market side. As you enter from the parking, the Athpula Bridge would be right in front of you.

Athpula Bridge

Athpula literally means 8 bridges. It was called so as it stood on 8 pillars forming 7 arches. The central arch is the biggest one with subsequent arches becoming smaller, giving a concave shape to the bridge.

As it stands today, you wonder where is the river over which this was built. The water surrounding the bridge is an artificial water body. Well, though the youngest monument this bridge is still 400 years old, built during Akbar’s time by Nawab Bahadur over a canal that connected to the Yamuna. What is noteworthy about this bridge is that this is one of the rare imprints in Delhi from Akbar’s time.

Sikandar Lodhi Tomb

Follow the paved path around the Athpula and you would see a fort-like wall. You have to go around it to reach the gates of Sikandar Lodi’s tomb. Built-in the early 16th century by his son Ibrahim Lodi, this tomb is in the typical octagonal shape of the Lodi era. This tomb has an uncanny resemblance to Adham Khan’s tomb in Mehrauli , with three archways opening on each of the eight sides.

The inside of the tomb has a high dome, with a painted ceiling and beam and lintel entrances in red sandstone. Arches inside have geometrical designs in blue and green. The western wall gives the impression of being a mosque with a Mihrab-like recession. The walls enclose huge gardens that surround the main tomb building. The platform outside the entrance wall has two canopies.

Legend of Octagonal Tombs

A legend says that the Mughals thought of Lodis as traitors. In their era, the traitor’s tombs were made in the Octagonal style like that of Adham Khan’s. Another interesting point is that Sikandar Lodi chose to be buried in Delhi while he used to rule from Agra.

Sheesh Gumbad

Move a little ahead and you would see Sheesh Gumbad and bang opposite it Bara Gumbad. Now, these are square tombs from the Lodi era. Sheesh-Gumbad was so-called because its outer finish with blue enameled tiles gave the impression of being a mirror. Very few of these tiles survive now and the dome carries a bare look. A family seems to be buried in this tomb, which is fairly well preserved from the outside but is totally ignored inside.

Bada Gumbad or the Big Dome

Bara Gumbad has a mosque on one side and a Mehman Khana or guesthouse on the other. As you enter Bara Gumbad, you suddenly are hit by the sheer height of the dome. On the platform between the dome, mosque, and guesthouse are some graves that probably belong to a later period. The Bara Gumbad mosque was the most pleasant discovery of this walk.

This mosque with three domes and five arches has a beautiful engraving of geometric designs and Arabic verses in an off-white color. It is a riot of incised plasterwork. It also has some of the best Squinches that I have seen in Delhi monuments. The interior of this mosque is pretty well preserved making it worth visiting.

No one knows who is buried in these two tombs. But I guess it is safe to assume that these must be noblemen, going by the grandeur of these tombs. It is argued that Bara Gumbad is not at all a tomb, but a gateway to the mosque. But apparently, the graves have been found inside establishing it as a tomb.

Mohammad Shah Tomb

As you walk towards the Lodi road, you would see another majestic octagonal structure, with peculiar and ornate Chhatris or canopies all around the octagon. These Chhatris make the distinct element of this tomb, with everything else very typical of the tombs of that era. This is the Sayyid dynasty’s Mohammad Shah’s tomb. It is the biggest structure in these gardens. The ceiling again has some elaborate circular paintings in blue and red enclosed in a star-like formation. It makes a very photogenic tomb, as it is on a higher mound and is absolutely symmetrical.

Here and there you would see some grave platforms in the gardens. It would almost feel as if you have come to meet all those who lay buried here. The dead do speak to you, not literally, but through the pieces, they left for the future generations, cast in stone carrying an imprint of their times. The monuments show the importance given to people after they died. Not sure if their lifetimes were way smaller than the life of their tombs if they got the same reverence and gratitude. I am not sure if they met as many people in their lives as they meet from their graves.

While absorbing history, do not miss the present. A variety of birds live here and a lot more visit during winter. In case you do not know much about the birds, there are elaborate boards to explain the various varieties of the birds that you can see here. Of course, the trees and plants are there to admire all around.

• Entry is free.
• The visitor’s timings are 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM from April to September. During the winter months of October to March, the timing is 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Open on all days of the week.
• You need at least an hour to see the garden properly. If architecture and birding interest you, you can easily spend half a day there.
• The closest Metro Station is Jor Bagh on Yellow Line. You need to walk for about 5 minutes or take an auto from there.
• Lodhi The Garden Restaurant on the garden premises serves European and Mediterranian food. It is a high-end restaurant. You can always hop over to Khan Market for a bite.
• Shoot the birds with your camera but do not feed them.

Delhi may not be known for clean, green spaces, but if you take time to explore, you’ll find lush flower gardens, forests teeming with birdlife and the ruins of ancient cities sitting silently under the trees. This isn’t the Delhi you expected.

Delhi is famous for many things – rich history, captivating culture, amazing architecture, fabulous food – but green spaces? Many travellers arrive in India’s historic capital and quickly rush out again, daunted by the traffic, noise and pollution. But the Indian metropolis has greenery to spare – if you know where to look. There are parks full of Medieval monuments, rainbow-hued flower gardens, forests alive with birds and ruined cities with more goats than people.

When the crush of the old city or the noise of New Delhi gets to be too much, visit the following parks and gardens and recharge. When travelling on the air-conditioned Delhi Metro, a green space is never far away.

Lovely Lodi, the lungs of Delhi

Lodi Garden may not be the biggest open space in Delhi, but it’s the best-loved. Covering a tidy triangle of land at the south end of New Delhi, this calm sweep of lawns and gardens is where Delhiites come to jog, stroll, picnic and promenade away from the prying eyes of chaperones. It’s the best place in the city to see Delhi at play, and there’s added historical appeal – the tombs of a string of sultans from the Sayyid and Lodi dynasties stand gracefully among the flowerbeds.

Landmark monuments include the elegant, octagonal tomb of Muhammad Shah Sayyid and the imposing mausoleum of Sikandar Lodi, set inside crenellated walls. Nearby is the Athpula (‘eight piers’) – a bridge constructed by the Mughal emperor Akbar – and farther south is the handsomely proportioned Bara Gumbad, a guest house for royalty built by Sikandar Lodi in 1490. Just outside the southern gate, the ornately decorated, Taj Mahal-like tomb of Safdarjung was created for the Nawab of Oudh in 1754.

When you tire of exploring, the shady Lodi, the Garden Restaurant is a great place to retreat from the heat, with private tables screened by flowing drapes. Get here on the metro via the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium station.

The Mughal garden reinvented at Sunder Nursery

Most of India’s Islamic gardens are nostalgic ruins, but the gorgeously restored Sunder Nursery offers a glimpse of what these Mughal marvels were like in back in the day. Once overgrown and neglected, this tidily trimmed expanse of lawns, water features and flowerbeds was laid out in the 16th century, following the principles of charbagh (‘four gardens’) – a mirror to the four celestial gardens of paradise described in the Quran.

Dotted around the compound, which sprawls northwest from Humayun’s Tomb , is a string of UNESCO-listed tombs and pavilions, dating from the Mughal period when the gardens lay along the route of the original Grand Trunk Road. Duck inside the stocky, square Sunder Burj to view the intricate plaster ceiling, before nipping into the alleyways of Nizamuddin Basti, where sizzling kebab houses crowd the approach to the 14th-century dargah (grave) of the Sufi mystic Nizamuddin Auliya.

A peek at the president’s garden

Dominating the end of the Rajpath, the Indo-Saracenic Rashtrapati Bhavan was originally the home of the British viceroy; however, when India gained independence, it became the residence of the Indian president. You can see the elegant staterooms of this iconic building on an organised tour, but the only time you can explore the lavish gardens is during the annual public opening from February to March. In the Mughal style, the riotously colourful flowerbeds were tended by a team of 418 gardeners in the time of Lord Mountbatten, the last viceroy, providing an orderly counterpoint to the chaos of the city streets beyond.

Green scenes and Raj relics on Delhi Ridge

Delhi’s green spaces are not limited to parks and gardens. Rising to the west, the densely forested Delhi Ridge (‘The Ridge’) is a spur of the Aravalli Range, which shelters the city from the scorching winds of the Thar Desert (also known as the Great Indian Desert). The protected forest is part of the Northern Aravalli Leopard Wildlife Corridor, and true to its name, leopards stalk through this lush landscape, though they’re rarely seen in daylight hours. Most visitors come in search of the 100 or so bird species that nest in the forest canopy.

Urban expansion has split The Ridge into a series of forest islands, curving around the western rim of the city. The Kamla Nehru Ridge runs north from Old Delhi, easily reached by auto rickshaw from the Kashmere Gate metro stop. Hidden away in the forest is the Flagstaff Tower, a crenellated lookout post where British families took refuge during the First War of Indian Independence in 1857; a spire-like Victorian-era memorial to the conflict stands just south in a neatly trimmed park. Farther north, near the Hindu Rao Hospital, are the ruins of the Pir Ghaib, a Tughlaq-era hunting lodge with a densely overgrown baoli (stepwell).

Seek ghosts and sunbirds in Sanjay Van

While exploring South Delhi, make a detour to this 317-hectare (783-acre) forest, which has escaped development thanks in part to the legends about the area being haunted. The graves of Sufi mystics lie under the trees, which buzz with birdlife, particularly at dawn and dusk when the forest is at its most atmospheric. Keep an eye out for colourful Indian paradise flycatchers and purple sunbirds flitting through the trees. Sanjay Van is one of Delhi’s best-kept secrets – during the week it’s possible to walk here without seeing a soul, something unimaginable in most of the city. Get here by auto rickshaw from the RK Puram metro stop.

Walk with djinns in Tughlaqabad

Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din Tughlaq built his fortified city in the dry forests south of Delhi in 1321, after rising from slavery to take charge of the Delhi sultanate, but his triumph was short-lived. Tughlaq was crushed by a collapsing wooden pavilion just four years later, and his imperial city was abandoned to the winds. And so things remained for the next 700 years – even today, the ruined city sleeps silently inside its crumbled walls, visited by more goat herders than tourists.

You can thank superstition for the peaceful state of Tughlaqabad. According to legend, a Sufi mystic, who wanted to build a well on the same site, cursed the city, and local people still claim the ruins are haunted by djinns , Islamic spirits who wait among the stones to pounce on the unwary. To reach the ruined city, take an auto rickshaw from Tughlaqabad metro station to Ghiyas-ud-din Tughlaq’s mausoleum on the edge of the fortress walls.

Let your senses explore in Mehrauli

Close to the ruins of the first Islamic city in India, the Garden of Five Senses is a haven from the noisy traffic of south Delhi. Easily reached by rickshaw from Qutub Minar metro station, this gorgeously planted ornamental garden dates back to 2003, with winding pathways dotted with eclectic sculptures and artworks, including stone elephants, a Mayan arch and a tree of metal bells. The scented herb garden is a great place to escape the crowds who mob the nearby Qutub Minar archaeological site.

After exploring, detour west to the forests of the Mehrauli Archaeological Park. Scattered throughout the woods are some of the most ornately decorated Islamic tombs in Delhi and a string of other relics. The ruins get quieter and more atmospheric the farther you get from the Delhi-Gurugram highway; in the basti (village) west of the ruins is the Hijron ka Khanqah, a Sufi graveyard that is revered as a spiritual centre for Delhi’s hijra (transgender) community. Get here via the Qutab Minar metro station.

The capital city of India has a lot more to offer apart from its famous monuments and extensive shopping centers. One does not always want a vacation where they are always on their toes, ready to hop from one location to the other. The government has been working very hard to maintain greenery in all part of the city and therefore, almost all the parts have famous garden parks . These parks are the best way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city without actually leaving the place. So, if you wish to spend a day relaxing in a peaceful environment, you can go visit any of these parks.

1. Garden of Five Senses

Garden of Five Senses  covers an average area of 20 acres. The name of this garden comes from the experience people have had here. They claim that they feel like all their five senses are stimulated. The garden is no less than a paradise for a nature lover with the flourishing flower beds and magnificent fountains. There is a variety of over 100 types of plants and flowers. The garden also has the facility of fine dining. To sum it up, one can say that this garden is a perfect place to spend time with your loved ones , immersing yourself in the beauty of nature.

2. Lodhi Garden

Lodhi garden is one of the oldest gardens of Delhi. This garden covers an area of about 90 acres and dates back to the 15 th century. Its architectural structure speaks of the time it was constructed. It is maintained by the Archeological Survey of India as it counts as one of the heritage sites. The park houses the tombs of two great emperors Sikandar Lodhi, Muhammad Shah, and of two unknown members of Lodhi family, the remains of whom are housed in the Sheesh Gumbad and Bara Gumbad respectively. These tombs speak very highly of the Lodhi architecture. The place brims with joggers both in the morning and evening. It is a beautiful place to spend some quality time .

3. Deer Park

The deer park can almost pass for a mini forest. It is often known as the ‘lungs’ of the capital city as this is probably that one place where one can breathe freely without any pollution. The park is a great place to go for a outing . It has almost everything one can imagine at a garden. With the deers walking about freely and the park being divided into different sections, one just cannot get bored of this place. The deer park also houses a fountain, a duck park, a few picnic spots here and there, and a number of monuments that date back to the Mughal era. It would be a waste to not visit such a beautiful place.

4. Japanese Garden

The Japanese garden comes under one of Delhi’s largest gardens. It has five lakes within its perimeter. Apart from walking and jogging along the lush greenery, you can opt for a peaceful boat ride in one of the lakes. The park has playgrounds for the little ones to will have a great time as well. The best time to visit the park would be during the sunrise or the sunset when the view is nothing less than breath taking.

5. Nehru Park

As the name might suggest, this park was named after India’s first Prime Minister, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. Nehru park stretches over 80 acres of land. The park looks beautiful and is a picturesque location. Apart from the usual jogging and walking, people host a number of events here. Many music concerts and other such events take place in this park. Winters are really the days to come and spend some time here.

We all visit the main stream places of every city we tour. It would be a great and positive change to visit the garden parks for once . It would be a good break from the busy and chaotic city life . Our guide lele is a wealth of information, Lele is very professional and very attentive to our needs. Lele is amazing. Lele got everything spot on. It probably helps that Guilin is a brilliant place to visit so Lele has great material to work with but that doesn't take anything away from how much Lele helped make it a great trip.

Our guide for Beijing was super knowledgeable and experienced and able to help us to achieve as much as we wanted within the time given. We had a fun time guided by him as he is also super humorous and you can see how he interacts with the vendors and people whom he comes by. Thank you for a very enjoyable time in Beijing and accommodating to all our needs!

Our China Highlight guide. Michael, was attentive, thoughtful and knowledgeable. He narrated many interesting historical events about Chengdu while touring around the city and having afternoon tea with us. He was thoughtful to provide us with snacks during long hikes at Leshan or walks around the city.

She will take you to take the best panda photos and to know more about Chengdu city. Our tour was great, she took us to all our destinations always with the best spots: Temples, pagodas, famous streets, theaters, pandas...you name it! Everything was great.

He picked up our pre-booked boat/other excursions tickets so we were able to avoid all the long lines and chaos. He is knowledgeable of the places we visited, courteous, fun to travel with and well-versed in Chinese classics.
