Genting Dream Cruise All-Inclusive Restaurants (Free of Charge) • The Lido & Dream Dining Rooms

Genting dream all-inclusive restaurants (free of charge).

Up to 6 meals a day are included when cruising on board Resorts World Cruises’ Genting Dream. Here are the dining options you will have for almost 24 hours without any additional charge while cruising, whether on the move on high seas or even when docked at destinations.

The Lido • Halal, Vegetarian, Jain International Buffet

The Lido on Deck 16 is Genting Dream’s main buffet restaurant, and certified Halal by OIC (Organisation of Islamic Corporation) and SMIIC (Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries) standards.

A sign is displayed in the queue to enter The Lido to not bring any alcoholic beverages into the Halal area.

As compared with the World Dream with only 1 buffet line by the entrance, the whole port (left) side of The Lido is now a Halal line on the Genting Dream, but divided into local and international cuisines.

A wide variety of food for everyone is available in The Lido now that the whole port-side buffet line is Halal-certified, so all passengers have more food options without the worry of mixing cutlery.

Drinks are also available for self-service.

Inclusive cold drinks revolve around syrup juices.

Coffee and milk are available from large dispensers, which is especially useful now that the ship operates at full capacity with no more social gathering restrictions.

Cutlery is now available from self-service stations.

There is still a bar in The Lido, but this is to be consumed on the aft and starboard sides of The Lido.

The starboard (right) side of The Lido serves up Indian Vegetarian and Jain food, certified by Global Vegetarian Certification Services (GVCS).

With a crowd of more than 3000 on board, The Lido does get busy but it can still cope well for finding a table reasonably fast with the space available. Food are also available on multiple lines so the crowd is spread out around The Lido.

A small sample of the food offered at The Lido. I didn’t take much as this was a late afternoon “lunch” and dinner was going to happen for me soon.

If heading down for an early shore excursion, The Lido is also open for an early morning start to your day for a quick grab-and-go plated breakfast.

A wide variety of local and international breakfast options are available on the various buffet lines at The Lido.

A butter machine is also installed now to plop roundels of butter on to your plate.

My small selection of a quick breakfast from The Lido as I was heading off for a shore excursion to Phuket .

The Lido Outdoor Snacks Corner

During gaps in main meal times (morning tea, afternoon tea, and supper), The Lido Outdoor Snacks Corner on Deck 16 serves up light bites for those still hungry.

Snack food is available during afternoon tea, but some breakfast options are available for morning tea for those who woke up late and local favourites such as porridge are available during supper as well.

Dream Dining Room Lower • Western Semi-Buffet Restaurant

Dream Dining Room Lower is an inclusive Western restaurant which operates in a semi=buffet style.

Orders are taken at the table for main courses, but everything else is found on buffet lines.

Breads, salads, and soups are now self-service from the Dream Dining Room Lower buffet line.

I was surprised that my steak doneness was requested by the waiter at Dream Dining Room Lower as I had expected that the food at inclusive restaurants would be done in 1 style.

Dessert was also done buffet-style at the buffet line.

A mix of cakes and local hot desserts are available.

If dining during the safety demonstration, the waiters double up to point out the safety features and procedures on board the Genting Dream.

Breakfast is a full buffet at Dream Dining Room Lower with an international menu, similar to The Lido.

A variety of local and international cuisines are available at Dream Dining Room Lower. Do note that the buffet line at Dream Dining Room Lower is not Halal and includes pork.

A small selection of western breakfast for me this early morning.

Omelettes and sunny side up eggs can be ordered through the waiters.

For the last dinner of the cruise, I went back to Dream Dining Room Lower as well, since I prefer Western food.

I had a beef tenderloin which was very tender, nicely pink, and can be cut easily with a regular knife.

The vegetarian option of Spinach Lasagna was also good with generous fillings and sauce.

Dessert was also local hot dessert and cakes from the buffet line.

Dream Dining Room Upper • Chinese Set Menu Restaurant

Dream Dining Room Upper is Genting Dream’s inclusive Chinese restaurant served in set menus.

I had only tried Dream Dining Room Upper once on this cruise for a sit-down breakfast.

For a solo cruiser, meals were portioned out nicely for 1 person’s share, but I thought it was still a bit generous for an early start to the day.

Chinese dim sum and carbs were served for breakfast with noodles, congee, glutinous rice, dumplings, and the popular golden egg yolk bao which every other table seems to be ordering extra servings of.

BONUS: Blue Lagoon • Chinese Set Menu Restaurant (Peak)

Blue Lagoon is a specialty restaurant serving up a la carte local fare. However, during peak periods , Blue Lagoon doubles up as an inclusive restaurant serving up a Chinese Set Menu which will be the same as Dream Dining Room Upper. Check your RW Daily for details on when Blue Lagoon will operate as an inclusive restaurant.

With a variety of cuisines and meal times catered by Genting Dream, it’s hard to go hungry when on board the ship. I personally like the western mains served up by Dream Dining Room Lower, but many others prefer the Chinese food at Dream Dining Room Upper. Perhaps it’s for everyone to find out their favourites with the many meal times and menus offered throughout the cruise.

Being one of the most popular cruises in Asia, Resorts World Cruises was officially launched in June 2022 with the theme ‘A Resort Cruising At Sea’. Genting Dream, the flagship cruise of Resorts World Cruises has over 35 restaurants and bars spread across 18 decks of the ship. For Indian travellers, it’s a perfect cruise offering a mix of Indian cuisine with international flavours and options.

Genting Dream is not the first cruise ship to serve halal food, but it’s the first with an internationally halal-certified kitchen with an OIC/SMIIC standard halal-friendly certificate. This is based on OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation) and SMIIC (The Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries) standards. The cruise also holds a vegetarian certification by Global Vegetarian Certification Services. The Lido which is the free-buffet restaurant on the ship provides an extensive range of international cuisines including vegetarian and Jain food options. For instance, The Dream Dining Room(upper) is dedicated to serving Chinese set meals, whereas the Dream Dining (lower) serves semi-buffet western meals.

We even went behind the scenes and discovered that there are dedicated timings and lifts to deliver the food. From the way the food is prepared and delivered, to the way utensils are washed after — everything is segregated so there is no chance of cross-contamination at all. So, Jain travellers can cruise and eat with peace of mind onboard Genting Dream.

Food onboard a cruise ship

Cruise guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks for free on a cruise. This includes access to all complimentary food venues onboard. Main dining restaurants feature versatile menus that cater to a variety of tastes and dietary preferences, which comes included in your cruise fare.

Genting Dream also has exclusive dining venues, only accessible to passengers in Dream Palace suites. Food can also be delivered to your cabin 24/7 if you are staying at a Palace suite. For balcony and interior cabins, it comes at an additional cost.

You can bring your own food onboard — including snack food you like to have on hand and items you pick up in port. You can’t bring raw meat onboard, but pretty much anything else is fair game. However, there’s so much food onboard that, unless you’re very picky or have a dietary restriction, there’s not much need to bring your own food. Moreover, Genting Dream restaurants pretty much always have vegetarian options; low-salt, low-carb, gluten-free and vegan food is either available and noted or can be prepared with advance notice.

GENTING DREAM: Cruise Guide for First-Timers

The idea of going on a cruise may be intimidating for some because of the cost. Others dismiss it as a retiree’s holiday option. That may be true many years back, but this trend is gradually changing as years roll by.

The rise of more cruise lines, offering different options and encouraging healthy competition, resulted in relatively reasonable cruise rates. Some of these companies are going the extra mile to reach out to the growing number of travelers that are willing to spend on things or experiences that give good value for money by creating themed cruise ships and coming up with innovative itineraries. Genting Dream is one of those that cater to a wide range of guests — friends, families, couples, and even company incentive trips (or sales conference/meeting).

If you will be sailing with Genting Dream soon and it is your first time, this post is for you. We hope this will help you prepare and maximize your cruise experience. Here are the things you can expect.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

Packing & Pre-Trip Preparations

• Travel Documents. You need to bring these documents: passport, a photocopy of your passport’s bio page, a copy of your cruise ticket, and a visa (if necessary). If you are a Philippine passport holder, no visa needed because the sail destinations are within Southeast Asia and the homeport is Singapore. If you want a hassle-free purchase transaction, you may present your credit card.
• Clothes/Outfits. Come on. We know you want to snap as many photos as you can while onboard and during shore excursions. We normally pack two sets of clothes per day: casual for the day activities and smart casual or dressy outfits for the night events, especially if you plan to watch the evening shows or try the fine-dining specialty restaurants. The same goes for footwear. The important thing is that you are comfortable.
• Toiletries. The stateroom comes with the toiletries: shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, lotion, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, cotton buds, and tissues. It also has bath towels, hand towels, bathrobes, and hotel slippers.
• Check-in Luggage. Each passenger can check in more than one luggage without incurring additional fees.
• Onboard Currency. The default currency while on the ship is the Singapore Dollar (SGD).
• Onboard Time. Genting Dream follows Singapore time (same as the Philippines) throughout the entire cruise.
• Dream Cruise Mobile App. Download the App before getting onboard. You can use the App to view ship information, see the daily onboard schedule, check availability of onboard attractions and facilities. You can also use this to send IM to your shipmates, purchase your onboard WiFi package, and review your onboard account statement.

• Embarkation Process. Genting Dream is homeporting in Singapore at the Marina Bay Cruise Center. Upon arrival at the terminal, look for the baggage drop area for the pieces of luggage you want to check-in. Prepare your travel documents for check-in. After that, you will pass through immigration and then security checks before you can finally board the ship.
• Checking-in. You need to present your cruise ticket at the check-in counter to get your Access Card that will serve as your cabin keycard and your purchase card for onboard shopping and when dining at specialty restaurants. You can check-in online via the official website from 7 days up to 24 hours prior to the departure date. If you are going on a shore excursion, you also need to present the Access Card when getting off and returning to the ship. Do not lose this card. When you do, relax. Go to the Reception and they will print another one for you after answering SOP questions.
• Surrender Passport. Upon boarding, the staff will take your passport. Do not panic. You will get it back after the cruise (before you check out).

WELCOME ABOARD!

ATTENTION! Changi Lounge is offering the Fly-Cruise Transfer service, which includes: Seamless bag transfer. End-to-end luggage transfer from Changi Airport Baggage Claim area to the Marina Bay Cruise Terminal to your stateroom! Your luggage will be waiting for you in your cabin. Advance cruise check-in at the lounge. You will have your documents processed in advance and get your Access Card here. Enjoy the lounge amenities. Complimentary buffet, various drink selections, free internet connection, desktop computers, and electrical outlets. It also has meeting rooms, a nap room, and a shower room. You can also explore Jewel while waiting. The lounge is located near the famous Rain Vortex and the Changi Experience Studio. Ground transfer. The transportation to the cruise terminal from the airport is also covered. When you avail of this service, you will skip the check-in process at the Marina Bay Cruise Center and head straight to the immigration process.

Safety Drill

Before setting sail, there’s a safety drill that everyone is required to participate in. You need to pay attention and familiarize yourself with the ship’s map, especially your Assembly Station (which is indicated on your Access Card), and the emergency exits in case of an emergency. Check the Dream Daily/Dream Weekender directory that you will find in your cabin for the safety drill schedule. Ours was held at 9:00 PM.

3 Complimentary Restaurants

This is part of what you paid for when you booked your cruise ticket. You can dine here without incurring additional fees. It’s free-of-charge. Genting Dream has three inclusive restaurant options:

• Dream Dining Room Lower. It serves either a semi-buffet type or Chinese set menu, depending on the schedule. You may check the Dream Daily/Dream Weekender directory for the info. This is located on Deck 7, Aft section of the ship. Reservation is required.
• Dream Dining Room Upper. This only serves the Chinese set menu. This is located on Deck 8, Aft section of the ship. Reservation is required.
• The Lido. This serves Asian and international buffet, including Halal and Indian cuisines. The outdoor area of the restaurant is a 24-hour snack place that also serves morning tea and afternoon tea. This is located on Deck 16, Aft section.

Dream Dining Room Upper and Lower have a ballroom hall-themed setting and floor-to-ceiling windows that afford guests the magnificent views of the ocean.

Note: Alcoholic drinks are not free-of-charge.

You may also try the specialty restaurants! Genting Dream has nine. Charges apply when dining at any of these, but if you are craving any of their offerings, go for it. Here are your options:

• Umi Uma (Japanese Cuisine and Teppanyaki / Korean BBQ; Deck 8, Aft)
• Hot Pot (Choice of meat, seafood or vegetarian hot pot; outdoor setting; Deck 8, Aft)
• Prime Steakhouse by Mark Best (Western Dishes / Steak; Deck 8, Mid)
• Seafood Grill by Mark Best (Western Dishes / Seafood; Deck 8, Mid)
• Gelateria (Homemade Gelato; Deck 8, Aft)
• Blue Lagoon (Hawker Food / Asian and International; Deck 7, Mid, open 24 hours)
• Lobby Café (Coffee / Tea / Bread; Deck 6, Mid)
• Silk Road Chinese Restaurant (Chinese Fine Dining; Deck 6, Forward)
• Crystal Life Cuisine (Healthy Options; Deck 15, Forward)

Shore Excursions (Shorex)

To put it simply, these are pre-arranged tours at every stop. One of the best things I love about cruising is that you get to visit other countries while enjoying the cruise ship’s amenities and features at the same time.

This time with Genting Dream, we took the weekend getaway package with a stop at Bintan Island in Indonesia. For this stop, there are three Shorex options to choose from: Tanjung Urban Explorer, Scuba Tryout at Trikora Coast, and Bintan Black Coral Leisure Diving. We took the first option which includes Gurun Pasir Busung (sand desert), Telaga Biru (Blue Oasis), and Trily Resort Center Mangrove Forest in the itinerary.

You can also pull a D-I-Y. It’s up to you. Here are the scenarios:

• Booking a Shorex. This is the same as joining a guided group tour. You won’t have to worry about getting to one attraction to the next or how much it will cost you because everything, including the meal, will be taken care of for you by the local tour operator partners. You can be assured that you will return to the ship on time.
• Pulling a D-I-Y. You can travel at your own pace and control your itinerary. It is also a cheaper option. BUT, you need to be aware of the time. Make sure that you return to the port on time or earlier because the ship will not wait for you. It will leave, with or without you.

Whatever you choose, you will be given a small sheet of paper upon disembarkation. This usually contains instructions and the address of the port where the ship is docked. Don’t forget to bring your Access Card and a photocopy of your passport bio page.

Note: Some Shorex options may require a lot of walking or trekking or activities that might not be suitable for those with health issues. Carefully check the itinerary and assess if the tour is viable for you. Also, each tour needs a minimum number of participants. A tour may be canceled if it doesn’t meet the minimum requirement.

Room and Amenities

Genting Dream has four types of accommodations: Interior Stateroom, Oceanview Stateroom, Balcony Stateroom, and the exclusive suites, collectively referred to as The Palace. Since the ship caters to families and big groups, there are over 100 connecting rooms. About 70 percent of accommodations feature spacious balcony staterooms. Aside from the toiletries and towels, the rooms also have haird ryer, mini-refrigerator, safe, water kettle, complimentary bottled water, tea, coffee, and sugar packets. These are replenished daily as housekeeping do regular cleaning.

The cheapest is the Interior Stateroom. If you want to make the most of the ship’s features, you will probably be spending most of your time outside the room — swimming, sunbathing, eating, playing, shopping, watching shows or going on shore excursions.

Here are some amenities that you can enjoy for FREE:

• Waterslide Park. You have six slide types to choose from — from gentle slopes for the family to steep inclines for the adventurous. Wear proper swimming attire. Follow the rules and the staff on duty for your safety. Located on Deck 20, Aft.
• Main Pool and Kids Water Park. Located on Deck 16, Mid. You can see the Waterslide Park from here. You can also relax and sunbathe at the Sun Deck on Deck 17, Mid.
• Crystal Life Fitness. This is the gym. If you don’t want to miss your workout routine, you can do it here. Located on Deck 15. You can also go to the Jogging Track on Deck 17, Forward.
• Ropes Course. Perfect bonding activity for the family, couples, and groups. Complete the course and punctuate it with the 35-meter zipline, gliding along the side of the ship above the water from Deck 18.
• Sportsplex. A large outdoor court that can host basketball, tennis, archery, bubble soccer, and other physical games. Located on Deck 19, Aft.
• Rock Climbing Wall. Wear proper footwear. Located on Deck 18, Aft.
• Mini-Golf. Nine-hole putting course. Please wear proper sports shoes. Located on Deck 18, Aft.

If you like to shop or bring home some souvenirs, you can get duty-free items from The Dream Boutiques located on Decks 6 and 7. The Dream Store/Souvenir Mart, located on Deck 6, is where you can get Dream Cruises merchandise. If you fell in love with one of the artworks you see inside the ship, you can go to the Art Gallery, located on Deck 8, to purchase a copy of that artwork.

Evening Shows and Events

The night is as exciting as the day onboard Genting Dream. You can choose from brilliant live production shows brought to you by the award-winning international entertainment team. During our cruise, we have two choices: SONIO – A Tale of Two Dreams and Some Like It Hot. We were able to watch the latter at Zodiac Theatre. You need to reserve your seat for the show at the Box Office on Deck 6 (Mid). You can find the opening hours of the Box Office on the Dream Daily/Dream Weekender directory sheet provided in your cabin.

If you want to brush up on your moves and still got the energy to dance the night away, let Zouk and Zouk Beach Club orchestrate an unforgettable party for you as it brings the best beats by world-class DJs. Both are located on Deck 17. Zouk is Singapore’s most sought-after nightclub and consistently chosen one of the top ten clubs in the world.

If you booked a 5-night cruise, expect a grand night party on the last night called Dream Night. This usually happens at the pool deck. You can also check out the bars if you just want to have a sip and unwind. Here are some of them: Sun Deck Bar (Deck 17/Mid), Pool Deck Bar (Deck 16/Mid), Red Lion (Deck 7/Mid/24 hours), Bar 360 (Deck 6/Mid), Karaoke (five rooms/Deck 6/Mid), and Bar City, a collection of bars in one area: Johnnie Walker House, Penfolds Wine Vault, Mixt Cocktail Bar, Humidor Cigar Lounge, and Bubbles Champagne Bar (Deck 8/Mid).

Cinema at Sea

For movie enthusiasts, you can still watch while on board. Depending on the schedule, here are the places to catch flicks: Zodiac Theatre (Deck 7/Forward), Zouk Beach Club (Deck 17/Aft), and the Lobby (Deck 6/Mid). Check the Dream Daily/Dream Weekender directory sheet for the venue and the time.

Yes! You can connect to the internet while at sea. How? Subscribe to WiFi through the Dream Cruises Mobile App. Here are the rates. Note: Rates vary depending on how many days and the package type.

• Standard: SGD19 – SGD95. Good for e-mail, chat, and social media. You can connect up to two devices.
• Premium: SGD29 – SGD145. Good for e-mail, chat, social media, and light media streaming. You can connect up to two devices.

Checking Out and Disembarkation

The day before disembarkation, you will receive a Disembarkation Notice explaining the check out procedure, disembarkation procedure, travel document collection, and baggage collection.

• If you don’t want to carry your luggage throughout the disembarkation process, you may leave it outside your cabin on or before the specified time. Set aside a small carry on bag for all the important stuff such as your wallet, your travel documents, prescribed medicine, etc. Get your luggage at the Baggage Claim Area after going through the immigration process.
• Settle your account’s balance before checking out to avoid delays during disembarkation. Reminder: A mandatory gratuity of SGD21 per night is charged to EVERY guest. For guests staying in the suite, it’s SGD26 per night. This rule is not applicable to infants below two years old.

Things to Eat, Do, and See on the Genting Dream: Cruise Your Way To An Unforgettable Holiday

The lovely thing about cruises is that even if you’re too lazy to explore the port of call, there’s plenty to do on the ship itself.   Dream Cruises ‘ Genting Dream sails to exciting islands like Pulau Redang, Koh Samui and Sihanoukville in Cambodia, but onboard entertainment includes water slides to foam parties, sumptuous buffet spreads, and of course, the slots. It’s gonna be tough finding your feet once you’re back on land so here are 10 things to enjoy aboard Genting Dream while it lasts.

The Genting Dream Cruise challenges the commonly held assumption that food onboard cannot be as good as the food on land. Fresh ingredients and skilled preparation methods mean delicious and satisfying meals available at sea.

Indian Food at the Lido buffet

After chatting with a Singaporean couple at another buffet restaurant onboard, they claimed that “the Indian food at Lido is better than most of the restaurants in Little India”. This piqued my curiosity and true enough, the extensive spread of Indian dishes at this buffet (inclusive in the cruise package) will leave you sated. The struggle to decide with choices like idly, naan, paratha and a whole plethora of spiced rice dishes that can be eaten with an equally appetizing mix of curries and deals is real. There’s even a designated Jain Counter for vegetarians. The dessert section is pretty standard but I enjoyed assembling my daily sweet treat; frozen yoghurt with fresh fruit.

Traditional Chinese Cuisine at The Dream Dining Room

I couldn’t get enough of this restaurant during my cruise. While buffets excite with the lavish spread of delicious possibilities, there is nothing quite like a sit-down restaurant meal with friends and family. This Chinese restaurant (inclusive in cruise package) serves a variety of courses for each meal.

Breakfast was my favourite with a feast of tasty Cantonese style dim sum, two noodle dishes, a bowl of congee and Chinese tea or coffee. Dinner comes with a soup and dessert course as well.

The attentive staff will be more than happy to bring you another round of dishes should you still feel hungry – and it’s hard to stop especially when fried chicken is one of the dishes on the menu.

Bistro by Mark Best

Australian celebrity Chef Mark Best has launched a new menu at his onboard restaurant. The seafood section features innovative dishes like the Peruvian inspired Kingfish served with Kiwi Ceviche and Finger Lime and the fresh Black Cod Poached in Tomato, Chili and Olives for some umami goodness while the choice cuts of steak are nothing to scoff at either. It is the   Slow Braised Australian Wagyu Ox Cheek with Mashed Potatoes , however, that represents Chef Mark Best’s care, knowledge and integrity when it comes to everyday ingredients.

Keep yourself thoroughly entertained with their incredibly fun amenities like the Glow Bowling Alley, a fully equipped Arcade and a mini Golf course. You can even join a Fitness Bootcamp or an energizing dance class with the sea as your backdrop.

Zipline/ Ropes Course/ Rock Climbing

The Ropes Course is a tough call (especially if you’re afraid of heights), but the stunning view of the open water makes this a must do. Strapped in with a safety harness and with numerous staff standing by, it’s a safe way to experience your own ‘I’m the king of the world!’ moment, 18 decks above the sea. Not without its challenges, like the short rock wall you will have to scale or the moving plank walk, this thrilling activity that will leave you glowing with pride as you step back onto the ship – even if it takes you twice as long to complete.

The Rock Climbing Wall is somewhat more challenging, with different routes, varying in difficulty, to reach the top that’s 23.46 feet high. You will need proper shoes before a a staff member can strap you into the safety harness to climb this Great Wall.

Water Slides and Jacuzzis

Experience the most exhilarating moments onboard with the six waterslides that cater to older kids and adults. Sure to get the adrenaline pumping, each slide is designed slightly differently, ranging from from gentle to sharp descents so you can build your confidence as you go. After all that excitement, take a relaxing break in one of the jacuzzis. It can comfortably accommodate 6-8 people so chill out with friends or the fam, grab a drink and snap a little something for the ‘gram.

Zouk Night Club

Ditch all your preconceptions about clubs and lounges on cruise ships because this one is radically different. Be it EDM or Bollywood, the Zouk DJs have got you covered so let loose and dance till the club closes at three in the morning. The Zouk Beach Club is located outdoors for fun movie nights under the stars while imbibing delicious cocktails. Spend an intimate night in one of the jacuzzis while enjoying a nightcap or join in the fun at the foam parties and other themed beach parties held here.

Luxury Spa Treats

Get pampered at the Crystal Life Asian Spa located on Deck 5 with treatments like the hour-long relaxing Foot Massage ($50 for 60mins) or the Chinese Acupressure Full Body Massage ($85 for 60mins / $110 for 90mins). Enjoy spa facilities including the Sauna, Steam Room, and Vitality Pool, as well as Thermal Suites perfect for soothing aching muscles.

Visual entertainment featured on Genting Dream’s programming include movie screenings and live music, which are available till late. There is even an After Dark with Dream Girls Show from midnight onwards that seductively fuses dance, music and fashion for an unforgettable night.

Daily Theatre Shows

Every night, there are exciting staged productions to catch. Voyage of a Lover’s Dream was by far the most captivating theatrical performance with several death-defying stunts sure to leave you spellbound. The mesmerizing costumes and the pure spectacle makes for an enjoyable evening onboard the ship. China’s Got Talent – The Dream Experience Show is another interesting show where you get to watch live acts like a contortionist sister act, a knife-throwing husband and wife pair and an LED dance performance.

The Bridge Viewing Room Viewing Gallery

Located just after the Fitness Centre on Deck 15, the Bridge Viewing Room is where you can observe the captain and crew on the job. With interesting facts and information tidbits about the ship, you can sign up for a Bridge Tour for that will illuminate secrets behind navigating this massive vessel and you will have the chance to get up close and personal with the bridge officers.

My family enjoys going on a cruise. I’ve been on a cruise getaway almost every consecutive year since I was 7 till I was in my teens and started realising that hanging out with my friends in malls is way cooler. Since then, I’ve never stepped onboard a cruise till two weeks ago. I guess going on a cruise is the next best thing to a staycation during this pandemic.

Even though it was my first time on Dream Cruises , I felt like I knew what to expect onboard the ship. You could say that I was rather well-prepared for the trip because my parents went several times with Dream cruises before and during the pandemic. They told me that it was as enjoyable and true enough, it isn’t a very fantastic trip even though everyone on social media is hyping about how fun it is to be on a cruise.

Nonetheless, I can’t deny the fact that it felt good to just step off the island and get out into the sea. So I wouldn’t discourage anybody from doing sea-cation but if you want to, here are 7 things you need to know before you go on a cruise with Dream Cruises.

1. You can check in earlier than the given timing by Dream Cruises.

I’m not sure if Genting Dream Cruises will hate me for telling you this but you can actually head to the cruise centre to do the COVID-19 test earlier than your scheduled timings. I was scheduled for the test at 5.45 pm but I went to take my test around 12 pm. And regulars who have been to this cruise many times would also come way ahead of others.

The benefits of boarding the cruise early are plenty. You can get your lunch onboard at one of their inclusive restaurants (since your Dream Cruises ticket is inclusive of all meals onboard) or speciality restaurants (where you have to pay to dine). On top of that, you will have time to make reservations for the use of pools, gyms and other facilities. Given that most of us would have forked out hundreds of dollars for the cruise getaway, why not make your money’s worth by heading there early?

2. Be prepared to wait for a period of time before you go onboard.

If you’re not staying at one of their Palace suites, then do be prepared to wait and queue. When you reach Marina Bay Cruise centre, you have to head up to level 2 to deposit your luggage (if you wish to) and then head up to do your COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Test (ART). The whole screening test took about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the crowd. Since we went there early, the waiting time isn’t very long. Within 5 minutes, we were asked to head to one of the booths to do the swab test.

After the test, we were ushered to the waiting area to wait for our results. Health Promotion Board will first notify you via your TraceTogether app before you receive the SMS notification.

After the test, you still got to queue to check in. They will check your passports and issue you the Tracey token which you must carry with you at all times. The boarding time is approximately 2 pm so we still have to wait for our turn to get on board. By the time, when it was our turn, it was already 2.30 pm.

Thus I would suggest bringing some things to do there in order to kill time. You can read a book or catch up with some work in the waiting area. They will also hand out their daily schedule or newsletter when you can find out what the events happening that day onboard. You can spend the time planning what you would like to do.

3. The food at Dream Cruises inclusive restaurants is not that great so be prepared to pay if you want better quality food.

Your Dream Cruises ticket is inclusive of all meals but you can only enjoy your ‘free meals’ at their inclusive restaurants like Dream Dining Room Lower (Western food), Dream Dining Room Upper (Chinese food) and the Lido (International buffet). We prefer dining at the Lido because you can try a variety of food. However, they are some hits and misses. I would say the food there is average but at least, you get to try some spicy food from the halal section or Indian food at their vegetarian section. Somehow the breakfast nasi lemak there tastes pretty good. Do try it!

If you did not already know, Dream Cruises is a halal-friendly cruise with halal dining options. Currently, the halal food section is only available at The Lido and the snack bar. There is also a prayer room on Deck 5.

As for the beverages, they serve syrup processed juices. If you want quality drinks like a glass of fresh fruit juice or iced lemon tea, you will have to pay extra for it.

The food standard at the Dream Dining Room Lower was especially poor. I think we’ve been served dishes which were made out of cheap ingredients. We did not quite enjoy the western breakfast we had because it was obviously prepared in a haste.

The Chinese food at Dream Dining Room Upper tasted slightly better. That explains why this restaurant is always packed and sometimes you will have to queue to get in. On some occasions, we were asked to head to other restaurants because the restaurant has reached its full capacity.

We heard that the speciality restaurants like Prime Steakhouse by Mark Best and Umi Uma offers great food but we did not want to fork out extra since we have already forked out $500 just for this sea-cation. A more affordable option is to dine at The lobby cafe on Deck 6. They offer several local food dishes and pastries at affordable prices.

4. There’s a 24-hour snack bar and you can pack food to bring to your rooms to eat.

There’s a 24-hour snack bar where you can munch on potato wedges, chicken nuggets, curry puffs, fried bee hoon and other small bites like buns and sandwiches.

They also provide drinks like apple juice, orange juice, coffee, tea and milk. Strangely, I’ve seen several people asking for milk which is dispensed from the machine. It tastes just like UHT milk except that it is cold and a little frothy.

And if you are feeling peckish at night, you can actually ask them to pack so that you can bring it back to the room to eat. By the way, you can also do take-aways for your meals if you want to have your meals in the room. You can call their reception and make a request.

5. The Balcony State Rooms at Dream Cruises are superb and well-furnished.

We got the Balcony Deluxe stateroom which is only slightly bigger than the Balcony stateroom. I believe that there isn’t much of a difference between the rooms except for the size of it.

I can’t complain anything about the room except that the curtains appeared to be quite dusty. Other than that, everything else is great. I love their ultra-comfy mattress and beddings. The ensuite bathroom is well-maintained and very clean. It even has a bathtub!

There’s a small balcony where you can go out to sunbathe. It’s nice to just chill at the balcony and enjoy some quiet time to yourself. You can also hang your laundry there if you intend to wash some of your clothes.

Toiletries like toothbrushes, shampoo, body soap, lotion and hair conditioner are all provided. There’s a hairdryer installed under the dressing table too.

6. You will need to make reservations to use the swimming pools, jacuzzi and gym.

Due to the strict social distancing measures, they can only allow a certain number of people to be using these facilities for a limited period of time. I recommend making your reservations right after you board the ship. Otherwise, you may have to queue just to book a slot. You are only entitled to use the pool or jacuzzi for up to 1 hour per day.

The gym is another popular spot too. It’s usually fully booked and we regret not booking it on the first day. We ended up having to wait until someone leaves so that we can enter the gym. However, I must say that the gym is pretty amazing. It is a state-of-the-art gym equipped with advanced training and exercise equipment. I enjoy using treadmills and other exercise machines but could only stay up to an hour and a half.

As for the pool slides, you just have to queue and wait for your turn. We did not try their slides but judging by what we saw, the slides are only frequented by kids.

7. You can join their free workshops, activities and attend the evening shows.

One of the Dream Cruises highlights is the evening entertainment. There’s usually a magic show or acrobatic performances onboard. At Dream cruise, these shows are held at the Zodiac Theatre on Deck 7. Bookings can be made via their Dream Cruise app. (Do not that the usage of the Dream Cruises app is free of Wi-fi charges.)

In all honesty, I didn’t quite enjoy the shows presented to us. Each show is only 45 minutes long and some parts of it were entertaining and some were not.

As for the workshops and classes, some are complimentary while some require you to pay. The free workshops are popular and they usually get snapped up real first. It’s on a first-come-first-serve basis so you have to arrive about 30 minutes earlier at the location to reserve a spot for yourself. We actually could not take part in some of the workshops because, by the time we reached the venue, it was all fully booked.

Again, it’s all due to the safe distancing measures where they had to keep the group size small. I guess you could say we were utterly disappointed and bored during the trip.

If you want to try out their Rope course, you will also have to queue and wait for your turn. Due to the rain, the attraction wasn’t open for the most part of our trip. Hence, we did not try out the Rope course or the mini-golf.

Another attraction to check out is their Esc Experience Centre which is located on Deck 17. It’s a VR/AR arcade centre and it is equipped with some of the latest gadgets and simulators. However, you will have to pay for the experience. On the last night of the trip, they will usually offer happy hour deal where you can enjoy 2 games at the price of SGD 22.

My Verdict of Dream Cruises

Overall, it was a good getaway for me and my husband but we both did not quite enjoy our trip on board Dream Cruises at all. The long waiting time and queues are the downsides to the whole cruise experience. Service also wasn’t that great idea. I had trouble contacting their reception for help after 8 pm.

When I posted a video of my Dream Cruises experience on TikTok, some of the followers recommended the Royal Caribbean cruise. So we might explore that cruise next time but as for now, we are really hoping to travel across borders soon.

There are 2 types of people on a cruise. The first one doesn’t mind paying extra for specialty restaurants. The second one doesn’t want to spend a dime on food because, “Isn’t food included in the trip? Why pay extra?”

Ladies and gentlemen, I belong to the second group.

In this article, I’ll share my experience eating in complimentary restaurants as well as tips on how to get the best bang for your bucks time.

PS: During my visit in 2021, the ship was called World Dream . However, they changed name to Resort World Cruise in 2022. Just want you to know that they’re interchangeable =)

Where can I eat for free?

There are 4 places you can eat for free in World Dream. They are:

Dream Dining Room – Upper Deck (Chinese)

Dream dining room – lower deck (western), the lido (international buffet).

• The Lido Outdoor Snack Corner

Only The Lido is Halal, the rest are not.

At the time of my cruise, we are only allowed to eat at 1 restaurant for free in a certain meal period; if we eat at 2 different places in the same meal period, a nominal fee (SGD 15) will be charged. This rule doesn’t apply to the Snack Corner.

For example: if I eat breakfast at Lido (the buffet), I can’t have another breakfast at Dream Dining Room, but I can have snacks at Lido Outdoor Snack Corner during breakfast period.

The dine-in regulation on the cruise follows Singapore’s dining regulation. If the rule in Singapore only allows groups of 2 to dine-in, then the same will be applied on the cruise.

From the reviews I’ve read and watched online, it seems like there is a consensus that the Chinese Dream Dining Room serves pretty decent food compared to other complimentary restaurants. Therefore, I told hubby that we should spend most of our time eating at Chinese DDR and forget about other places.

Dinner at Chinese DDR

We had our first dinner and our first breakfast at Chinese DDR. On our first dinner, we went to DDR quite late (about 7pm) and the restaurant was already full. They offered us a slot at 7.45pm and we said ok, then they gave us a piece of paper that stated “7.45pm” and asked us to come back at 7.45pm. This is quite a good system actually, we don’t have to queue, so we can use our time for something more productive.

When we got seated, the server asked if we want everything in the menu. Of course we said yes, except the bean sprout. A while later, they served the appetizer, soup and main course. But they didn’t serve us any rice even though the menu has rice in it. But it’s okay, we don’t want to waste calories on rice anyway.

Verdict for Dinner at Chinese DDR : Only the pork rib soup is memorable. The deep fried chicken, steamed fish, prawn in sichuan broth, braised pork knuckle and green bean sago are forgettable.

Breakfast at Chinese DDR

The next day, we had breakfast at Chinese DDR. It was open quite early for breakfast, at 7am. Afraid that restaurant is full again, 10 minutes after we woke up, hubby quickly went there to queue for a slot. It turned out that the restaurant was not full at all, so there was no need to rush down to take the q number.

We had our breakfast at about 7.45am. To be honest, the breakfast menu sounded very yummy. Bao, dimsum, noodle and congee.. basically all my favorite breakfast items! Of course, we had to order everything on the menu.

Verdict for Breakfast at Chinese DDR : Bao, spring roll and wanton are forgettable. Pork dumpling gave me trauma. I usually love mee taimak and congee at hawker centers, but over here, both of them as bland as the Chinese tea. Luckily soya sauce saved the congee, but the mee tai mak was not rescuable.

At this point, we were not sure what is edible anymore. Maybe I had too high expectation of Chinese DDR? I was too scared to step my feet on Chinese DDR again, yet I dreaded the food at other places because of the reviews I had read & watched.

But life must go on. We decided to brave it out and step out of our comfort zone and try the food at Western DDR and Lido.

We had our second dinner, second breakfast and third lunch at Western DDR.

Dinner at Western DDR

Dinner on Day 2 is our first foray into Western DDR. Similar to Chinese DDR, the Western DDR was quite popular during dinner time. When we went there, it was already full, so we had to take a queue number and come back again at our allocated slot.

Pro-Tip: They do allow people to enter 10 mins earlier than the allocated time, so do come early.

Another Pro-Tip: Early birds get the worm. If you go early, you may be able to score one of those rare window seats!

Similar to Chinese DDR, we can choose our preferred food from the menu, or we can ask them to serve everything in the menu. There were 3 choices of main course: pan fried fish fillet, honey glazed chicken and slow cooked pork collar. We asked one of the staff for recommendation and were told that the chicken and pork are great. So we went with that.

Verdict for Dinner at Western DDR : Exceed expectation! Salad was alright. Pumpkin soup was amazing. Chicken was so tender I almost couldn’t believe my luck. Pork was not my favorite but hubby said it was alright. Chocolate cake was not bad.

We definitely didn’t expect to be wowed by this dinner. We decided to come back again the next day for breakfast on Day 3.

Breakfast at Western DDR

We knew that the breakfast menu at Western DDR is quite boring (scrambled eggs, pancake, waffle, baked beans, etc) but we just wanted to try for the sake of having a variety.

Verdict for Breakfast at Western DDR : Nothing remarkable about the items in the menu. But, we do love the buttery bread which the servers keep in a bread basket and offer customers from time to time.

Lunch at Western DDR

For lunch on Day 3, we went to Western DDR again (3rd time in a row). The options for main course during lunch were fish, burger or meatball. We asked the same staff again for recommendation of main course and he said the meatball is great. So, both of us just ordered meatball. It came with a small portion of kimchi rice.

Verdict for Lunch at Western DDR : Amazing! Following a staff recommendation never fails! We even asked for another serving of the meatball and ate until too full.

Pro-Tip: Ask the right staff for recommendation and you’ll have a great time. But you need to find the right staff who will tell the truth.

We ate at Lido for 4 times: lunch on Day 1 & 2, dinner on Day 3 and breakfast on Day 4. Let me just cut to the chase: in my opinion, lunch was standard, meanwhile, breakfast and dinner were surprisingly quite good!

Pro Tip: Do keep a lookout on special items that are not repeated at every counter, because these items are limited in quantity, such as: crème brulle, bao.

Lunch at The Lido

I had lunch twice at The Lido and I found them to be really standard.

Dinner at The Lido

Dinner at The Lido was definitely much better than lunch. During my cruise, the theme was Japan. So, during dinner at The Lido, they served sushi and ramen. I wonder why they don’t serve Jap food during lunch too.

The sushi and ramen are enjoyable if you are not fussy. They also served a chicken rice (chicken and gravy are amazing, but rice is mushy).

Pro-Tip: don’t bother asking for window seat for dinner, you can practically see nothing outside at night.

Breakfast at The Lido

The breakfast at Lido is surprisingly quite good in my opinion. The congee at Lido is much much better than the congee in Chinese DDR. The nasi lemak is quite good.

I love a good breakfast by the window. However, they rolled down the curtain during breakfast to avoid morning sun. I took the below photo at the unoccupied section, so curtain was up.

We had our final breakfast at Lido, by the time we finished eating, the ship has already docked and we got to see Marina Bay Sands from the window.

Lido Outdoor Snack Corner

The snack corner is the place to go when you want to have a place to sit and to snack for free. It is located just outside The Lido. There are not many choices of food and drinks, but it’s certainly enough for snack time.

For food, we encountered fried beehoon, french fries, sausage, samosa. For drinks, it’s similar to The Lido, they have coffee, tea, water and juices.

The good thing about this snack corner is that, there is no limit of how many times you can visit in a day. It’s open 24/7, so if you wake up hungry in the middle of the night, you can still find free food.

Every restaurants have its pros and cons. For a well-rounded experience, you can consider going to different restaurant for each meal.

For 4D3N, you have 3 breakfast, 3 lunch and 3 dinner. Since there are 3 restaurants, you can get 9 combinations and you won’t eat the same meal in the same restaurant twice if you don’t want to.

For 3D2N, you’ll have to make compromise and choose the restaurant that’s likely to give you the best meal. If I may give you a recommendation, here it is: Day 1 Dinner: The Lido Day 2 Breakfast: The Lido Day 2 Lunch: Western DDR Day 2 Dinner: Western DDR Day 3 Breakfast: Chinese DDR or The Lido

By the way, don’t expect too much from the coffee at all-inclusive restaurants. To be honest, the 3-in-1 Nescafe in the cabin tastes better.

If you can afford specialty restaurants, by all means go for it. Better yet, if you can afford staying in The Palace, you can say goodbye to all-inclusive restaurants in this article, because you’ll get free meal at specialty restaurants and The Palace restaurant.

Check the operating hours of Lido. I can't advise you the operating hours cos it keeps changing. If you can enter the restaurant before they close, then you can dine there. My gut feeling says you may not have enough time to eat lunch cos by the time you board the ship, it may already be 3pm+.

Thank you for sharing so much detail on dining. It is very informative. We are doing the 3N sailing in early Jan. We are not aware about the dining rule. Otherwise we would not book the ship. Do you remember if lido opens between meals? Also does the snack area serves salad? Thank in advance for your reply.

Hi Alice, thank you! Lido is not open between meals. The snack area doesn't serve salad during my time, it only serves finger foods (mostly fried items). If you need proper food between meals, you can go to one of the paid restaurants, like Blue Lagoon.

Review of genting dream.

The 2016-built MS Genting Dream cruise ship was the first vessel in the fleet of the Chinese premium brand Dream Cruises (Genting Hong Kong/GHK-owned subsidiary company launched in November 2015). One of the world's largest passenger liners , the 151300-GT-ton vessel debuted in November 2016. Its former fleetmates were World Dream/Manara (2017/sistership), Resorts World One (1999-built as SuperStar Virgo, named Explorer Dream after the transfer from Star Cruises in 2019) and the larger Global Dream/Disney Adventure (2020/GLOBAL-class).

The vessel (IMO number 9733105) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311000319) and registered in Nassau .

Since May 2022, Genting Dream operates for Resorts World Cruises ( new travel brand ) established by GHK's former owner Lim Kok Thai.

MS Genting Dream's last drydock refurbishment was in 2023 (February 17 through March 1), being previously refurbished in 202 (January). Both drydocking renovation projects were conducted in Singapore (at Sembcorp Marine Admiralty Yard).

History - construction and ownership

In late-April 2022, Asian online media reported that Genting Dream becomes the first liner in the fleet of "Resorts World Cruises" - a Singapore -registered company (incorporated on March 9, 2022) established by Lim Kok Thay (Genting Group/Genting Cruise Lines). Also was reported that Resorts World Cruises is in negotiations with banks and investors to acquire Dream Cruises' other two vessels (Explorer Dream, World Dream).

The company's management team is led by Colin Au (CEO and Executive Director) and Michael Goh (President and International Sales Directors). Resorts World Cruises opened bookings for Genting Dream on May 18, 2022.

The parent company "Resorts World" is a Genting Group-owned subsidiary (Malaysian hospitality and casino franchise) and brand used across all Genting-owned resorts and casinos worldwide. Resorts World has ultra-premium properties (46 total/as of 2022) in Asia (Malaysia's Pahang, Terengganu, Langkawi-Kedah, Singapore's Sentosa Island, Philippines' Newport City-Pasay, Entertainment City-Paranaque, Macau's Nam Vam Lake), also in the USA (Winchester Nevada, Queens NYC, Kiamesha Lake NY, Miami Florida), Bahamas (North Bimini) and Europe (Solihull-Birmingham, England UK).

On May 18, 2022, at a news conference, Resorts World Cruises officially announced that as a "gesture of goodwill" the new company will offer complimentary FCCs/future cruise credits of "equivalent value" to all customers affected by World Dream's cancellations ( cruises to nowhere from Singapore/bookings for voyages scheduled for departure between March 2 and August 31, 2022). The FCCs were valid for the period June 15, 2022, through March 31, 2023, and applicable only to affected World Dream bookings that had not yet received any refund from the original booking source.

According to Colin Au (Resorts World Cruises' CEO and Executive Director, also GHK's former Deputy CEO), as the provisional liquidator couldn't revive the brand (Dream Cruises), they had worked with the Chinese lessors (Genting Dream's shipowner) and had decided to restart operations under the new "Resorts World" brand.

GHK is a global entertainment, hospitality, and leisure company based in Hong Kong . For its new Dream Cruises brand, GHK ordered two custom-built vessels to serve the Asian market, specifically China. GHK's other two cruise market segments were served by separate brands - Crystal Cruises (ultra-luxury) and Star Cruises (contemporary).

On October 7, 2013, Star Cruises announced that GHK signed a shipbuilding agreement with Meyer Werft ( Papenburg Germany ) for the construction of a new vessel for Star Cruises, with scheduled delivery in 2016-Q4. On February 10, 2014, was ordered a sistership, with scheduled delivery in 2017-Q4. Both vessels were with gross tonnage 150,000 GT tons and double-occupancy passenger capacity 3364.

However, later GHK decided to create a new brand (Dream Cruises) and both newbuilds were transferred to the new company. MS Genting World's (later renamed "MS World Dream") steel-cutting ceremony was held on February 9, 2015, at Meyer Werft Papenburg shipyard. MS Genting Dream debuted in November 2016. The sistership World Dream was launched in November 2017. On August 20, 2016, Genting Dream was floated out of the covered building dock 2 at Meyer Werft Papenburg.

Decks and Cabins

MS Genting Dream staterooms (1686 total) accommodate between 3376-3400 passengers served by 2020 crew, meaning a crew-to-guest ratio of 1:1.7, which is the highest in comparison to any Asia Pacific ship. The German-built vessel is also designed with spacious interiors.

~70% of all staterooms are with private step-out balconies, and 100+ cabins are connecting (with adjoining interior doors) making them suitable for families. Suite services include special perks, privileges, professional European butler service.

The largest accommodations are the Dream Grand Villas (sized 224 m2 / 2410 ft2). Other Dream Suite categories Executive (56-80 m2 / 600-860 ft2) and Deluxe (43 m2 / 460 ft2).

"THE PALACE" is a ship-within-ship concept/exclusive complex consisting of 154x premium Palace Suites (sized 37-40 m2 / 400-430 ft2), with exclusive dining and lounge venues/areas, butler service, suite-only perks. The 5-star luxury complex is sized nearly 10,000 m2 (108,000 ft2) and includes The Palace Restaurant, Gym, exclusive sundeck with a swimming pool. The all-inclusive luxury experience features Seafood Buffet (The Palace Restaurant), complimentary Premium Beverage package (in all onboard bars and restaurants), Captain's Welcome Cocktail Party, Crystal Life Cafe (healthy breakfast, vegetarian lunch), dedicated Kids Program (for children 2 to 12 yo), dedicated "Connoisseurs Circle" (enrichment program), complimentary fitness classes, complimentary shore excursions, priority services, specialty dining shipwide.

The boat has 18 decks , of which 14 are passenger-accessible and 10 with cabins.

Note: Deck 15 is actually the ship's "Deck 14". This enumeration is due to the fact that for the Chinese, numbers that include 4 are considered unlucky - similar to the Western practice about the number 13, and the Italians' number 17.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Genting Dream features 35 bars and restaurants, offering a wide choice of dining experiences for her guests. The restaurants offer regional cuisines, with an emphasis on Chinese and Asian dishes, as well as international flavors like Southeast Asian, Japanese, Italian and more. A 610 m wrap-around promenade is a special place for dining and offers seaside dining and lounging from early morning to late evening in various themed venues.

• Genting Dining Room (300 indoor seats) is a complimentary restaurant open for breakfast (7-10 am), lunch (12-noon - 2 pm) and dinner (5-8 pm). Chinese dishes and vegetarian options are always available.
• Dream Dining Room (872 indoor seats / 370 upper & 502 lower level) is a complimentary restaurant open for breakfast (6-9 am), lunch (12-noon - 2 pm) and dinner (5-8 pm). Chinese dishes and vegetarian options are always available.
• The Lido (629 indoor seats, 194 outdoor seats) is a complimentary buffet (self-serve) restaurant open for breakfast (7-10 am), lunch (12-noon - 2 pm) and dinner (5-8 pm). Breakfast options include made-to-order dishes (omelets, pancakes, waffles). Lunch and dinner options also include made-to-order dishes (pasta, salads), fresh-baked pizzas, soups, carving stations (roasts), Asian entrees, vegetarian dishes, separate salad bar, fresh fish (catch of the day), desserts (incl sugar-free items). In November 2018, Dream Cruises introduced on Genting Dream Halal cuisine options, which made the liner currently the only one in Asia with JAKIM Halal food certification (granted by Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia). The Halal food (permissible by the traditional Islamic law) is offered at a dedicated buffet section in the Lido Restaurant. Among the popular dishes are Ayam Madu (honey chicken), Pari Asam Pedas (stingray), Opor Ayam (chicken in coconut milk), Tandoori Kambing (mutton), Gulai Daging Kawah (beef), Tempe Goreng Pedas (fried soya bean cake).
• Silk Road & Cabaret is a Chinese specialty restaurant (144 seats, area 355 m2 / 3.820 ft2, at surcharge, reservations-only) with original dishes created by Asian Chefs, an extensive wine list and an extensive Baiju list. In the evenings (11 pm till late), Silk Road transforms into the Cabaret (show lounge).
• BISTRO by Mark Best (165 indoor seats / Chef's Table has 10 indoor seats) is an a la carte priced restaurant (reservations-only) serving western dishes (international cuisine specialties), fine wines (by the glass), a selection of domestic and international beers, specialty coffees/teas. The BISTRO is open for breakfast (7-10 am), lunch (12-noon - 2 pm) and dinner (5-8 pm).
• BISTRO Chef's Table (10 indoor seats) is part of the Bistro restaurant. This is a Private Table (dining room) available for individual and group booking. Each of the dishes is paired with fine wines. Chef's Table becomes active only when at least 8 passengers book in.
• BISTRO Grill Outdoor (54 outdoor seats) is also part of the Bistro restaurant. The grill is reservations only and opens for lunch (12-noon - 2 pm) and dinner (5-8 pm).
• Umi Uma (44 indoor seats / 42 outdoor seats) is a Japanese cuisine specialty restaurant (at surcharge, reservations required) open for dinner-only - between 5-8 pm.
• Umi Uma Tepanyaki (78 indoor seats) is a live cooking venue where dishes are prepared by the ship's master chefs. The restaurant is at a surcharge and opens for dinner-only - between 5-8 pm.
• Umi Uma Sushi Bar (13 indoor seats) is a specialty restaurant (at surcharge, reservations required) open for lunch (12-noon - 2 pm) and dinner (5-8 pm). The sushi bar offers signature dishes and an extensive Sake menu.
• Lobby Bar (40 seats, open between 7 am - 1 am) serves the lobby area with non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks.
• BreadBox is a bread shop (onboard bakery) / Snacks & Refreshment bar selling fresh-baked gourmet bread, cinnamon rolls, cookies, specialty coffees (Espresso, Latte, Cappucino, Viennese), Tiffin take away menu. BreadBox is open between 10 am - 8 pm.
• Lobby Cafe (7 seats, open between 7 am - 8 pm) is a takeaway cafe bar offering Southeast Asian favorites. To go dishes are in Tiffin boxes.
• Bar 360 (27 seats) offers premium Bourbons, cocktails and other beverages.
• Blue Lagoon (172 seats) is a 24-hour open restaurant (at a surcharge) with an a la carte priced menu and chefs live cooking stations. The restaurant also offers specialty coffees/teas and gourmet desserts (incl ice cream. Blue Lagoon is closed only between 4-5 am.
• Red Lion Pub (75 seats) is an English pub bar serving draft beers, international bottled beers, a variety of pub drinks and snacks, also full pub food menu. The pub is open 24 hours. The lunch menu is served between 12-noon - 2 pm, and dinner menu - between 6-10 pm.

• Genting Club (60 indoor seats) is an exclusive (Dream Mansion passengers only) restaurant with an exclusive wine list. Genting Club is open for breakfast (7-10 am), lunch (12-noon - 2 pm) and dinner (5-8 pm). Reservations are required.
• World Grill (258 outdoor seats) is an outdoor complimentary dining venue open for breakfast (7-10 am), lunch (12-noon - 2 pm) and dinner (5-8 pm). Throughout the day, World Grill serves the pool deck with fast food/snacks. In addition to the grilled food, during breakfast and lunchtimes is offered the Lido's menu.
• Pool Deck Bar is open between 7 am - 6 pm and serves with drinks at the swimming pool area. The bar offers cocktails and mocktails and serves a total of 380 outdoor seats plus 330 sunbeds.
• The Living Room (42 indoor seats) is an exclusive (Dream Mansion passengers only) lounge manned by Butlers and open between 7 am - 1 am. The lounge serves complimentary drinks (upon request) and snacks (in the mornings and afternoons).
• Dream Mansion Lounge (31 indoor seats) is an exclusive (Dream Mansion passengers only) lounge open between 7 am - 1 am. It is manned by Butlers and offers complimentary beverages.
• Genting Club Restaurant & Lounge (37 indoor seats) is an exclusive (Dream Mansion passengers only) with an exclusive list of premium wines (offered complimentary by the glass). Genting Club Lounge is open between 7-10 am, 12-noon - 2 pm and 5-8 pm. Here are served various complimentary beverages, including specialty coffees/teas.
• Sun Deck Bar (portside/starboard); Sundeck Bar Portside and Sundeck Bar Starboard have 38 outdoor seats (each) and serve refreshments (incl beer, cocktails, mocktails) between 7 am and 6 pm.
• Dream Mansion Cafe (140 indoor seats) is an exclusive snack and refreshments venue open between 7 am - 1 am.
• The Market is an outdoor venue serving non-alcoholic drinks only.
• Palm Court (101 indoor seats, area 495 m2 / 5.328 ft2) is a premium bar (open between 7 am - 12-midnight) with Afternoon High Tea service (between 2:30-5 pm).
• Function 8 (88 indoor, 26 outdoor seats, area 254 m2 / 2.734 ft2) is open between 10 am – 6 pm and offers non-alcoholic beverages.

In late-July 2020, Dream Cruises debuted (on MS Explorer Dream) the "Flexi-Feast" - a completely customized shipboard dining (food and beverage) concept that allows passengers to choose from more venues. Upon boarding the ship, cruisers receive a set of complimentary dining vouchers which can be used at designated restaurants, as well as OBC (onboard credits) for ordering meals at specialty restaurants, beverages at bars and also for room-service orders.

Genting Dream has the world's first-at-sea "Penfolds Wine Vault" via partnership with the Australian winemaker Penfolds) served by certified wine connoisseurs and offering an array of rare wines and premium vintages from the winery. Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

Plenty of recreation venues are available aboard Genting Dream, including multiple pool types, 6 water slides, rope-climbing course, playrooms, card rooms, mahjong, bowling alley, and duty-free shopping. health and wellness facilities include state-of-the-art Western and Asian spas, Health Club, Beauty Salon, Barbershop, and enhance the guest experience.

Among the ship's most popular public spaces are the Zodiac Theater (999-seat main show lounge), numerous food and drink venues, Dream Palace (private clubhouse), Zouk Beach Club, outdoor adventure zone, Crystal Life (Spa and Fitness complex), Bistro (restaurant by Australian chef Mark Best), Johnnie Walker House, Little Pandas Club (kids facilities). The ship is also famous for its state-of-the-art outdoor LED lighting system.

Resorts World Cruises' Genting Dream itineraries

For Resorts World Cruises, Genting Dream's itinerary program is currently based on homeporting in Singapore (docking at MBCCS-Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore). The liner arrived at MBCCS on May 29th, 2022, and was scheduled to start operations for Resorts World on June 15th (Maiden Voyage out of Singapore).

In early-June 2022, Resorts World announced that the brand's inaugural schedule will include Singapore roundtrips to destinations in Indonesia ( Bintan Island and Barelang Islands/Batam-Rempang-Galang), Malaysia ( Port Klang-Kuala Lumpur City , Port Dickson-Malacca City , Georgetown-Penang Island ), Thailand ( Phuket , Krabi ) and Indonesia (Bali Island's northern coastline).

• The first 2-Night Indonesia "Bintan and Batam Weekend Getaway" departed on July 1, 2022.
• The 3-Night Indonesia and Malaysia "Kuala Lumpur, Malacca and Penang" voyages depart on Sundays, while the 2-Night "Kuala Lumpur and Malacca" voyages depart on Wednesdays. 
• The Thailand and Indonesia program started in October 2022.

On July 18, 2022, was inaugurated Genting Dream's homeporting in Port Klang/Kuala Lumpur.

• 2-night roundtrips from Kuala Lumpur (to Singapore) depart on Thursdays/Saturdays
• 3-night roundtrips from Kuala Lumpur (to Penang/Singapore) depart on Mondays.
• Departures from Singapore are on Wednesdays/Fridays/Sundays.
• Since July 22, 2022, are operated cruises-to-nowhere from Singapore (2-night "High Seas Weekend Getaway") departing on Fridays.

Resorts World Cruises' dual homeporting targeted the ~10 million population of Malaya (Peninsular Malaysia) living within a short drive distance of Port Klang. With the Kuala Lumpur Airport located nearby, foreign tourists now have more flexibility in choosing airlines, flights and fares.

Dream Cruises' Genting Dream itineraries

When operated by Dream Cruises, Genting Dream had 3 official homeports - Hong Kong , Sanya and Guangzhou (Nansha Port) . The vessel targeted residents of China's Pearl Delta and Hainan regions, as well as fly-cruisers served by the airports of Guangzhou, Macau, Hong Kong, Sanya, Shenzhen, and Zhuhai.

Genting Dream's itinerary program started with year-round 2-night weekend cruises from Guangzhou-Nansha (departures each Friday) to Hong Kong, and 5-night itineraries (departures each Sunday) to Danang Vietnam , Sanya and Halong Bay Vietnam . The ship also offered 7-night itineraries out of Hong Kong to Guangzhou, Danang, Sanya, Halong Bay, and Shenzhen/Zhuhai. Sanya roundtrip itineraries were 7-night (to Guangzhou, Shenzhen/Zhuhai, Halong Bay, Danang, Hong Kong).

During Summer, the ship also operated 7-night Guangzhou roundtrips to Japan, with 2 seadays followed by Naha (Okinawa Island) and Miyakojima .

In 2018, Genting Dream was homeported in Singapore. Between early December 2017 and late March 2018, the ship operated on a series of 5-night roundtrip itineraries (Sunday departures) combined with 2-night weekend mini-cruises to destinations in Strait of Malacca and the Java Sea. Passengers also had the choice to combine Malacca Strait and the Java Sea voyages into a 12-night B2B cruise , with the option of spending the weekend either onboard or in a Singapore hotel. Between April and October 2018, the ship's schedule had listed destinations in the South China Sea and the Java Sea, visiting ports in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam.

Departing from Singapore from December 3, 2017, thru March 25, 2018:

• 2 Nights Weekend Mini Cruise (departures every Friday)
• 5 Nights Singapore to Kuala Lumpur-Penang-Phuket (departures every Sunday on the odd week)
• 5 Nights Singapore to Surabaya Java -North Bali (departures every Sunday on the even week)
• 12 Night back-to-back cruise with optional Singapore hotel stays instead of the weekend voyage.
• Note: Surabaya's Port Tanjung Perak allows max draft 14 m and has a cruise terminal.

Starting July 6, 2018, Genting Dream includes Pulau Bintan island as call port on 2-night weekend mini-cruise itinerary roundtrip from Singapore. The ship docks directly at Bintan Resorts area. This is an alternative to weekend getaways on which (especially during summer) hotels are most expensive,

For summer 2020 season (April through November) the cruise liner visits some of Southeast Asia's best-known island destinations and ports of call. From homeport Singapore, Genting Dream cruises on 2-3-4-5-night voyages that vary from weekend getaways (2-day mini cruises) to 7-day roundtrips. In January 2017, Dream Cruises announced the inaugural cruise itineraries of their first newbuild Genting Dream. The homeporting in Singapore (starting December 3, 2017) made it the first large-sized cruise ship based there for year-round operations. Genting Dream is the latest generation vessel (Germany-built) and is calling at more than 10 ports in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam during 2018.

The vessel (Meyer Neptun yard/hull number S712) has volume 150695 GT-tons, DWT-deadweight 15370 tons, mx width 44 m (with the bridge wings), max draught 8,6 m. The powerplant is based on MAN B&W marine diesel engines (model 14V48/60B) with combined output 62,4 MW (83680 hp).

Before Resorts World Cruises, the registered shipowner were three Genting Hong Kong Ltd-owned companies (Xiang CR18 HK International Ship Lease Co Ltd, Sea 172 Leasing Co Ltd, Compass Shipping 32 Co Ltd) while the registered operator was GENTING CRUISE LINES.

The vessel's physical construction/assembly officially started on December 4, 2015, with the keel-laying ceremony held at Meyer Werft GmbH's Neptun yard in Papenburg Germany . During the ceremony, a massive keel block (number 2 / one of the ship's all 92 building blocks) was lifted into the dock to officially start the assembly process. GHK's Chairman and CEO Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay laid the traditional "lucky coin" (a good fortune symbol) under the block to bless the new vessel.

The vessel was floated out from drydock on August 20, 2016. Its conveyance (northbound route to North Seas along Ems River) started on September 18, leaving the Papenburg shipyard at around 2 pm. It entered the North Sea waters on Sept 19, at around 6 pm. After the scheduled sea trials, the ship docked in Bremerhaven (at Columbus Cruise Center).

On November 14, 2016, was the christening ceremony held at Guangzhou (Port Nansha) . The ship's godmother is Mrs. Puan Sri Cecilia Lim - wife of Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay. He is Chairman and CEO of GHK (Genting Hong Kong) and second son of Genting Group's founder Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong. The naming ceremony was attended by over 900 distinguished guests, including numerous VIPs (prominent Chinese government officials, top executives from the cruise industry and shipping trade). Among the VIP guests were Cai Zhaolin (Guangzhou's Vice Mayor), Zeng Xiaofeng (Tourism Administration of Guangdong Province's Deputy Director), Chen Hongxian (Guangzhou Port's Chairman), Cai Jinlong (Guangzhou Port's General Manager). The welcome aboard event was held at the ship's Zodiac Theater (999-seat show lounge) led by Thatcher Brown (Dream Cruises' President). Next spoke Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay (GHK's Chairman and CEO). Followed the traditional for China exchange of gifts.

On October 12, 2016, the vessel was officially delivered to Dream Cruises by Meyer Werft in Bremerhaven. Ships' hull art (titled "Voyage of a Lover’s Dream”) is by the Chinese artist Jacky Tsai.

Wartsila Funa was the supplier of the ship's unique external "Dynamic Exterior Lighting" system. The order was placed in 2016-Q1. The innovative lighting system provides stunning visual effects (color, movement, and video) to the vessel's exterior. The technology is based on custom-designed and individually controlled LED RGBW lighting units. Wartsila Funa specializes in audio, video and lighting control design for large land-based public facilities (including theme parks, attractions, museums) and for cruise ships.

Ship's first Captain (Master) was Jukka Silvennoinen.

In late-September 2019, GHK (shipowner) sold Genting Dream (via sale-and-leaseback deal) to a consortium of three Chinese banks. The liner was sold for USD 900 million (~EUR 805 million) or 80% of its current market value (EUR 1,055 billion / USD 1,18 billion). According to a previous filing, as of June 30, 2019, the vessel's unaudited net asset value was ~USD 862,5 million (~EUR 777,3 M). The deal was finalized on January 15, 2020. The liner was immediately bareboat chartered (leased back to GHK) for 12 years, which means it will be purchased back by GHK in 2031.

The vessel's sale and leaseback transaction was with a 4-party consortium of Chinese financial companies - Bocomm Leasing (Bank of Communications Financial Leasing Co Ltd, 2007-founded), CMB Financial Leasing Co Ltd (part of China Merchants Bank), CCB Financial Leasing Corporation Ltd (part of China Construction Bank) and CDB Leasing (China Development Bank Financial Leasing Co Ltd). GHK's Financial advisor was DNB Markets (2003-founded, part of DNB Bank ASA / fka DnB NOR Bank).

Genting Dream refurbishments review

In January 2020, the ship was drydocked for 3 days at Sembcorp Marine Shipyard ( Singapore ) for general maintenance works and technical updates. During the drydock was installed a new dual water hybrid scrubber (exhaust gas cleaning system, supplied by Valmet) and 2 new overboard discharge valves (for the Valmet scrubbers). Maintenance works also included hull cleaning, swimming pools modifications (for reducing the vessel's draft/draught) and equipment tests - conducted by specialists from the companies Wartsila (engines), ABB (propulsion system) and DNV GL (classification society). Refurbishment works / new flooring received the World Buffet (Lido restaurant).

Genting Dream was last drydock refurbished in 2023 (February 17 - March 1) at Singapore's Sembcorp Shipyard. The drydocking was mainly for regular maintenance (technical and class works).

Itineraries 2017-2018

Genting Dream is departing from Singapore between December 3 (2017) and March 25 (2018), operating on the following itinerary routes:

• 2-Night Weekend Cruise (Every Friday)
• 5-Night Singapore-Kuala Lumpur-Penang-Phuket Cruise (Every Sunday on Odd Week)
• 5-Night Singapore-Surabaya-North Bali Cruise (Every Sunday on Even Week)
• 12-Night B2B cruise (back-to-back) combining the above 3 itineraries with the alternative of a land hotel instead of the weekend cruise.

In September 2017, CLIA Australasia (abbrev "Cruise Lines International Association") held its annual "Masters Conference 2017" onboard Genting Dream. The conference sessions were lead by Scott Koepf (motivational speaker) and were focused on the cruise industry's trends and how travel consultants can benefit from the sector’s growth. The annual event is open to consultants with "CLIA Ambassador" level accreditation and employed by CLIA member travel agencies. Masters Conference 2017 commenced in Hong Kong (China) on September 16. All booked travel agents enjoyed 1-night pre-cruise accommodation before boarding the ship for a 5-night cruise to Japan visiting Naha (Okinawa Island) and Miyakojima . Participation fees were included in cruise prices (USD 1880 pp double occupancy/airfare excluded).

Curry or cricket, India forever in Moscow

There is a corner of foreign land, which is forever India. In Moscow also, one can find many places, which have become preferred haunts of Indians and persons of Indian origin. From shops and restaurants to streets and monuments, there are special places, which bring together Indians of varied cultural backgrounds and have an emotional pull for them. 

The hub of Indian activities in Moscow, the embassy of India, is a historical building built by renowned Russian architect Ivan Baryutin in 1911. It is located in Vorontsovo Pole street, initially the residence of the Russian noble family of Vorontsov Princes in the 14th century and then the territory of the Andronikov monastery in the 15th century. This area miraculously survived the great fire of 1812 that burnt almost the whole city but continues to retain its patriarchal old-Moscow look. 

The neighbouring streets such as Chistoprudny Boulevard or Myasnitskaya Street also have unique historical ambience. Here you can find the majestic Archangel Gabriel Church, as well as buildings that transport visitors to different periods of the Russian history. 

Making a home away from home

The embassy hosts national holiday celebrations and myriad cultural events. But there are other Moscow locations that are traditionally known as “Indian” among both Indians and Russians. One of them is the Cultural Centre of Gubkin Institute, situated on the Leninsky Prospect street, which used to be the Museum of History of Gubkin State University of Oil and Gas. The other is the Interclub conference hall at the Russian Peoples' Friendship University (PFUR). The PFUR warmly welcomes different ethnic and cultural groups living in Moscow, but for Indians, this place symbolises “a real home away from home”. On Diwali and Holi, large groups of people of Indian origin, dressed in festive clothes, come to these places with their families to celebrate the Festival of Lights and the Festival of Colours. 

But Indians are not the kind to bond only on festivals. There are a number of Indian eateries where Indians often meet over a cup of masala tea or a lunch of curry. “Talk of the Town”, “Maharaja”, “Khajurao”, "Darbar” are just some of the restaurants where Moscow-based Indians enjoy the food and atmosphere they’re accustomed to. According to the Indian embassy, there are around 14,000 Indians in Russia, with over half of of them living in Moscow. Around 4000 Indian students are enrolled in various medical and technical institutions in the country. 

For any Indian feeling homesick and missing their favourite flavours and aromas or for that matter, for a Russian who’s got hooked on delicious Indian food and beautiful jewellery and scarves, there are a host of Indian shops in Moscow, starting with low-cost markets where one can grab inexpensive bracelets or sweets to the Indian shops selling exquisite luxury goods for the exacting buyers. “Indian Spices” shop on Sretenka street, “White Clouds” esoteric centre and shop on Pokrovka Street and the famous Indian market in the Sevastopol Hotel are redolent of Indian aromas and are buzzing with customers looking for a bargain. Moscow State University stadium, where cricket matches between eight teams are held, is a favorite with Indians who love to indulge their passion for the game here. 

And even those who are not very familiar with the Indian cultural life in Moscow can still get a feel of India by just walking along the streets of the city. Many people on their way to work by car or public transportation daily come across landmarks and streets named after iconic Indian politicians or cultural personalities. Jawaharlal Nehru Square, Indira Gandhi Square with the Indira Gandhi monument close to Moscow State University, the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Moscow's “Museon” park with the monument of Peter the Great in the background, and the Jawaharlal Nehru monument on Vernadsky Prospect street are just a few Indian names that Muscovites encounter on a daily basis. Even though Indian names stand out among the names of other Russian streets such as Lomonosov Prospect or Leninsky prospect, they merge effortlessly and strike their own chords in the symphony of the Moscow streets.

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.   Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?   My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.
