Great show in the best venue on the tyne. The band played the whole of the

First album to a rapturous enthusiastic crowd who were given some

extra pleasure during the encore with the cover of be my baby ...highlights were many including the nonstop all action female drummer and epic tune waiting for the ice cream van to come. Would highly recommend a night out to see Glasvegas.

Glasvegas rocked the boat at Thekla, so loud mny ears are still ringing. The classic debut album played in full plus select tracks from the next 2 albums as an encore made a superb night out.

DorsetYiddo’s profile image

Somber Scottish quartet Glasvegas have an underlying power within their indie rock that is often missed on first listen to the albums yet it is harder to avoid within the smoky confines of a festival tent. As the group allows the crowd to gather and anticipate the performance, the lights suddenly change to an icy blue and signal the beginning. The cheers quickly subside as they are cut down by the guitar introduction of 'Magazine' and James Allan's characterfully downplayed vocal.

Although it all seems rather miserable, there is something very anthemic in the every man anthems such as 'Football Tops & Flowers' and 'Go Square Go'. The Scots may not be particularly charismatic yet the intensity of the performance and the poetic nature of the setlist does not warrant them to be. The audience remains equally happy to listen to the melancholic 'It's My Own Cheating Heart That Makes Me Cry' and 'Please Come Back'. It is their Scottish #1 single 'Geraldine' that receives the biggest cheer but the real personal highlight is a heavy version of the heartbreak tale that is 'Daddy's Gone' that will really leave you with a lasting impression as it is as chilly as their Scottish homeland.

Live Review

Glasvegas, nme awards tour, do the glaswegian four-piece have the potential to exude universal appeal.

Words: Alexia Kapranos 12th February 2009

According to the Gospel of Alan McGee , Glasvegas “could be the biggest band in the world” when it comes to live performance. But do the Glaswegian four-piece have the potential to exude universal appeal, or is this just another case since ‘Creation’ of “Indie mogul crying ‘wolf’”? DIY watch Glasvegas headline the NME Awards Tour 2009 . As the follow up act to shoegazing funksters Friendly Fires , Glasvegas ’s set was always going to see a shift in demographic down in the stalls. Fires’ frontman Ed Macfarlane clucking about like Mick Jagger with extra ants in his pants could not be a more glaring contrast to Glasvegas crooner James Allan ’s bleak expression, 50s quiff, and black shades that whiff of Roy Orbison . His is a ‘retro’ rebel look - a fitting aesthetic for the band’s self-proclaimed ‘Wall of Sound’ , which they tonight set against a backdrop of a black and white picture-show. By opening with the soaring ‘social-worker’ anthem, ‘Geraldine’ , before a greyscale image of a cherub and celestial-like beacons of bright flashing light, it becomes immediately apparent that Glasvegas are not here to treat us to just any old rock ‘n’ roll show. Instead, they strive to inspire a more divine experience - the best example being the sensitively spun melancholia of ‘It’s Your Own Cheating Heart That Makes You Cry’ , which sees the beer swigging congregation embrace their pals, raise their pints and chime in with their best Scottish accents. Glasvegas must be the only band since Oasis to ask, “What’s The Story (Morning Glory)?” and reap a similarly rapturous response. The show itself proves seamless; with the band using their guitars to create a Spector -style soundscape in between the end of one song and the start of another. And though this slows, if not drags, the pace down at points, it is nonetheless a refreshing approach that sets them aside from some of their counterparts, who instead dabble with banter to maintain a mood. The musical bridge also facilitates a spine-tingling renaissance in the second half of the set. Momentum builds beautifully for the band to blast out a stirring rendition of ‘Flowers and Football Tops’ , upon which Allan ’s shudders of “Babeh Ba-a a-beh” sound like Scott Walker strangling The Proclaimers . The crowd’s boisterous seizure of the terrace chant “Here we fucking gooooooo!” from ‘Go Square Go’ , even after Glasvegas leave the stage, further indicates that the faithful were not yet close to full-time. Had there been no encore, truncheons and shields would have been out in full force. Returning for a soothing and stripped-down ‘S.A.D. Light’ , the band’s inevitable set-closer ‘Daddy’s Gone’ remains as raw and poignant as ever, with Allan giving fans centre stage for a final tug of the heartfelt chorus. Conjuring up the kind of sentimental dejection that would strangely please Morrissey , the band didn’t actually need their frenetic lightshow to set off the waterworks of grown men. As they bid farewell, Allan , shaking hands and blowing kisses to the vocal and adoring front-row audience, looks genuinely overwhelmed. The feeling is mutual. Alan McGee may have said a mouthful when he said Glasvegas could be the best live band in the world, but after tonight’s set, a lot of Leeds Academy would agree that the man has a point. Whether the band can outlive the hype and outgrow those who blindly follow is, as they say, in the lap of the Scots.

Theatres in Moscow

Cultural life of Moscow city is various and rich! Operas, ballets, symphonic concerts... Russian composers have created some of the most beautiful classical music. Russian classical music is very popular in Moscow. It is performed in many beautiful historical venues. Do not forget to include a visit to a concert hall in your itinerary when you are planning your stay in Moscow! And do it in advance.

There are almost no restrictions on dress code in Russian theatres. Visitors may wear jeans and sports shoes, they may have a backpack with them. Only shorts are not allowed.

A typical feature of Russian theatre – visitors are bringing a lot of flowers which they present to their favorite performers after the show.

Here are some practical advices where to go and how to buy tickets.

The Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the oldest, the most famous and popular opera and ballet theatre in Russia. The word “Bolshoi” means “big” in Russian. You can buy a ticket online in advance, 2-3 months before the date of performance on the official website . Prices for famous ballets are high: 6-8 thousand rubles for a seat in stalls. Tickets to operas are cheaper: you can get a good seat for 4-5 thousand rubles. Tickets are cheaper for daytime performances and performances on the New Stage. The New Stage is situated in the light-green building to the left of the Bolshoi's main building. The quality of operas and ballets shown on the New Stage is excellent too. However, you should pay attention that many seats of the Bolshoi’s Old and New Stages have limited visibility . If you want to see the Bolshoi’s Old Stage but all tickets are sold out, you can order a tour of the theatre. You can book such a tour on the official website.

If you want, following Russian tradition, to give flowers to the performers at the end of the show, in the Bolshoi flowers should be presented via special staff who collects these flowers in advance.

In August the Bolshoi is closed.

The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre

This theatre is noteworthy. On one hand, it offers brilliant classical opera and ballet performances. On the other hand, it is an experimental venue for modern artists. You can check the program and buy tickets online here http://stanmus.com/ . If you are opera lover, get a ticket to see superstar Hibla Gerzmava . The theatre has a very beautiful historic building and a stage with a good view from every seat. Tickets are twice cheaper than in the Bolshoi.

The Novaya Opera

“Novaya” means “New” in Russian. This opera house was founded in 1991 by a famous conductor Eugene Kolobov. Its repertoire has several directions: Russian and Western classics, original shows and divertissements, and operas of the 20th and 21st centuries. It is very popular with Muscovites for excellent quality of performances, a comfortable hall, a beautiful Art Nouveau building and a historic park Hermitage, which is situated right next to it. You can buy tickets online here http://www.novayaopera.ru/en .

Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center

The Opera Center has become one of the best theatrical venues in Moscow. It was founded in 2002 by great diva Galina Vishnevskaya. Nowadays its artistic director is Olga Rostropovich, daughter of Galina Vishnevskaya and her husband Mstislav Rostropovich, great cellist and conductor. Not only best young opera singers perform here, but also world music stars do; chamber and symphonic concerts, theatrical productions and musical festivals take place here. You can see what is on the program here http://opera-centre.ru/theatre . Unfortunately “booking tickets online” is available in Russian only. If you need help, you can contact us at and we can book a ticket for you.

Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and The Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory

These are two major concert halls for symphonic music in Moscow. Both feature excellent acoustics, impressive interior, various repertoire and best performers. You can check the program here http://meloman.ru/calendar/ . You need just to switch to English. Booking tickets online is available only for owners of Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian phone numbers. If you need help, you can contact us and we can book a ticket for you.

Moscow International Performing Arts Center (MIPAC)

This modern and elegant concert hall houses performances of national and foreign symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, solo instrumentalists, opera singers, ballet dancers, theatre companies, jazz bands, variety and traditional ensembles. Actually, it has three concert halls placed on three different levels and having separate entrances. The President of MIPAC is People’s Artist of the USSR Vladimir Spivakov, conductor of “Virtuosy Moskvy” orchestra. You can see pictures of the concert halls here http://www.mmdm.ru/en/content/halls . The program is impressive in its variety but is not translated into English. You can contact us at and we can find a performance for you.
