A World Heritage–listed wonder

The reef is a World Heritage–listed wonder, and an essential Australian travel experience – and the Whitsundays are right in the heart of it! Perfectly poised just off the central Queensland coast, access to the reef is easy here: step off the beach from your island resort and see what you can see or explore the mesmerising underwater world of the outer reef at our permanently moored pontoon – with snorkelling, scuba diving, heli-scenic flights and semi-submarine tours.

Great Barrier Reef Activities

great barrier reef tours airlie beach

Reefworld is our pontoon at The Great Barrier Reef, moored 39 nautical miles from mainland Australia. It provides a fun, interactive and safe way to explore the underwater world of Hardy Reef.

Our pontoon sits above colourful Hardy Reef, one of the many thousand small reefs that make up the Great Barrier Reef. A coral wall, home to an ecosystem of magnificent corals and marine life runs adjacent to the pontoon. Hundreds of fish species at Hardy Reef will surprise and delight you – especially the giant groper.

Giving the reef that magical feel is an intricate garden of hard and soft coral thriving in sheltered lagoons. The bright colours and amusing antics of anemone, parrotfish and sometimes even turtles and reef sharks, captivate all. It is common to see tusk fish, cuttlefish, morays, barracudas, unicorn fish, surgeonfish, angelfish, starfish, feather stars and much more.

Hardy Reef is part of the Great Barrier Reef, off the Whitsundays coast of Australia.  The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for over 2,300 kilometres.

Airlie Beach, QLD The ultimate guide to Airlie Beach

Map of the Great Barrier Reef

Airlie Beach is one of the main gateways into the irresistible Whitsunday Islands chain, but still provides an outstanding holiday destination in it’s own right, for all types of travelers year round.

Airlie Beach Queensland - fun in the water

The beautiful town is renowned as a backpacker’s paradise, is an ideal place to experience the fun of the water, beaches and reef, and is one of North Queensland’s fastest growing destinations.

Where is Airlie Beach Australia?

Airlie Beach is just north of Mackay and south of Townsville on Australia’s east coast – an ideal launching pad to the sparkling waters of the Whitsundays, the iconic Whitehaven Beach, the Coral Sea, and the tourism playground that is the Great Barrier Reef.

See some of the highlights of Airlie Beach, Shute Harbour and the Whitsunday Islands in the video below (video duration: around 5 minutes) .

Despite its commercialisation in the region over recent years, the town still boasts a relaxed yet touristy ambiance, with lots of things to see and do.

When is the best time to visit?

While Airlie Beach enjoys perfect year round tropical weather, spring is the best time to visit, more specifically, the months of September to November because the weather is perfect and town comes alive.

When the weather is good, you can easily get around town in a guided Tuk Tuk tour (pictured below) – a fun twist on a traditional sightseeing tour.

tuk tuk at Airlie Beach

Airlie is home to a great coastal beach, but stingers can make it difficult to swim in the ocean between November and May. However, the Airlie Beach Lagoon, which was built at the town’s foreshore, is a man-made public swimming pool that provides great entertainment, including picnics, barbecues and of course, a fantastic spot to cool off.

Winter (June to October) in Airlie Beach is absolutely perfect with highs of 25’c and consistent sunshine and is often a great winter escape for Australians further south. Evenings generally are cooler, which may require you to pack a light sweater, jumper, or jacket out on the water, but it rarely gets any colder than this.

Is Airlie Beach better than Cairns?

While Cairns and Airlie Beach offer similar easy access to different parts of the Great Barrier Reef, the towns are very different. Airlie is much smaller, giving off a relaxed “beach town” vibe, compared to Cairns’ bigger city feel.

And while Airlie Beach is only about 1,000 kilometres south of Cairns, it does mean it’s generally cooler. Airlie will typically be a few degrees cooler than Cairns which can make a big difference in summer.

Cairns (pictured below) can also experience more rain than Airlie Beach as it’s closer to the equator.

But if you get the chance, and you’ve come this far, why not experience both!

7 Ways to Get to the Great Barrier Reef from Airlie Beach in QLD

Underwater Shot of Anemone fish swimming in it's home

I feel like nothing quite compares to the beauty and wonder of a day spent exploring Australia’s Great Barrier Reef! But since it covers a large area, it’s often intimidating to search through the different tours, and day trips.

So today, I wanted to help you get to the Great Barrier Reef from Airlie Beach and inform on the options I personally did.

The region is a well-known destination and one of its main draws is also the Coral Reef Tours. These tours will give you an up-close look at Australia’s most iconic natural landmark while providing hours of fun exploration.

So below, let’s find out the best way for you!

This post may contain affiliate links that at no additional cost to you, I may earn a small commission. Please read my blog disclaimer, terms and conditions & privacy policy here for details.

How to Get to the Great Barrier Reef from Airlie Beach

Key Takeaways: The only way to get to the Great Barrier Reef from Airlie Beach is by boat, plane, or Helicopter. This means you’ll either need to hire your own boat, join an organised tour, or charter a flight. While this may sound expensive, there are options you can choose from that help you stick to a budget.

Airlie Beach has always been worth visiting  for the Whitsunday Islands. With so many tour options available, it can be challenging to know where to start. But fear not, I’m here to help! Whether it be snorkeling with turtles or exploring colorful coral gardens, plenty of options are sure to make your next adventure worth every minute spent on the open waters.

Chris/Aquarius Traveller snorkelling the underwater coral reef

1. Whitsundays Scenic Flight in Fixed-Winged Plane

On my last visit to Airlie, flying in a fixed-winged plane was one of the first tours on my list. Imagine the feeling of soaring through the sky above the stunning Whitsunday Islands and Great Barrier Reef, with nothing but endless blue waters and breathtaking scenery stretching out before you as far as the eye can see.

➡  Book your Whitsundays Scenic Flight HERE with Get Your Guide.

From your comfortable seat in a fixed-wing aircraft, you’ll be treated to sweeping views of the Whitsunday Islands, including a bird’s-eye view of the famous Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet. But the real highlight? A visit to Heart Reef, one of the most photographed and beloved reef locations in the entire world.

This tour is roughly 60 minutes long and perfect for those who only have one day in Airlie Beach . But you’ll need extra time to check in and go through the safety briefings. But, I recommend researching the  best time to fly over the Whitsundays  by checking out the tides and cloud cover.

Seeing Heart Reef from scenic Flight tour from Airlie

2. Combo Tours with a Boat trip, Snorkelling, and Scenic Flight

What’s better than one day trip? How about a combo deal with two tours in one while saving some money? The beauty of these tours is you get two different aspects of the Coral Reef, from the land and the Air. What’s even better is sometimes you can organise these on the same day!

➡  Book your Combo Land & Air Tour HERE with Get Your Guide.

This is the same 60-minute flight mentioned above, with the added bonus of visiting Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet and snorkelling the inner Great Barrier Reef. There’s no need to pick and choose where to go when you can do it all in one day.

Whitehaven Beach is famous for its white silica sand, and the Hill Inlet lookout is where you’re going to see that picture-perfect swirling sands with low tide. Snorkelling locations are decided on the day, but the fringing reef that surrounds the islands can be brilliant for tourists. Especially when you don’t want to take the 2 to 3-hour ride into the outer Reef.

3. Whitehaven Beach & Inner Reef Snorkelling

Can’t afford the flight option? Then you can still get to there on a boat. This was one of my recent tours, and I was not disappointed with the organisation, the staff, and the things we went to.

➡  Book your Whitehaven & Inner GBR Tour HERE with Get Your Guide.

Departing from Airlie Beach, you’ll climb aboard the fastest day boats in the Whitsundays for an informative and thrilling ride. With super-fast semi-rigid inflatable vessels capable of reaching speeds of up to 35 knots.

There is a choice between a Northern Whitehaven tour (with two snorkelling sites) and the Southern Whitehaven tour (with more beach time and one snorkeling site). Please choose the one that suits you best, but since I was also doing an outer Reef tour on another day, I chose more beach time on the Southern Whitehaven Tour.

Whitehaven Beach is worth visiting  in the Whitsunday Islands, and you won’t be disappointed. The same goes for the Hill Inlet lookout points and at least getting one snorkelling site done in the inner reef.

Nudibranch

4. Outer Reef & Pontoon Experience

Take it from me that the Inner and Outer Great Barrier Reef experiences will be completely different and one you’ll have to see yourself. While I like swimming through the coral Gardens on the inner Reef, the Outer Reef is deeper, and you can see larger fish, turtles, and even reef sharks.

➡  Book your Pontoon GBR experience HERE with Get Your Guide.

Even better, this tour comes complete with a purpose-built pontoon, which services the tourists and their needs. These pontoons have tables and chairs, sundecks, snorkeling and diving gear, underwater viewing chambers, and even semi-submarines.

Morning, afternoon tea, and lunch are generally included in the cost, as is using the equipment on the platform. However, diving experiences will come with an extra charge and can be purchased at the time of booking.

The Pontoon Tours have easy access into the water

5. Sleeping experience

Do you have a couple of days free? Or you’re searching for a romantic luxury getaway with that special someone? Look no further than the Sleeping on the Reef option that’s available.

➡  Book your GBR Sleeping Experience HERE with Get Your Guide.

During the day, your experience on the Outer Reef is pretty much exactly the same as above, along with the rest of the passengers being there. However, around 2 to 3 pm, the other 200 tourists leave, and you have exclusive access to the Reef pontoon with limited staff and guests. How good does that sound?

Hardy Reef is home to one of the most spectacular stretches of the coral ecosystem. Imagine snorkeling around this enormous area or catching the sun’s rays from the deck chairs. The world is your oyster, and you can choose what you want to do with it.

It’s an unforgettable night under the stars on a Reefbed atop a pontoon. So why not take a moment to sit back and enjoy the sunset, sipping on your favorite drink?

Sleep in a glamping tent in the Great Barrier Reef

6. Helicopter Flight with Beach Landing

Truthfully, If I had a choice, I would always choose a helicopter flight over a fixed-wing plane. Why, you ask? Well, Helicopters seem to have a larger degree of viewing, and you’re more likely to get a window seat. And this is something I would always check beforehand.

➡  Book the Helicopter Tour HERE with Get Your Guide.

That being said, sometimes helicopter flights will come with a higher price tag, and this tour is no exception. But the higher price tag comes with a very special experience and touching down on a different area to Whitehaven beach than where the rest of the tourists are.

Granted, these flights in the Inner reef won’t see the brilliant Reef formations of the Great Barrier Reef, but it will still be an amazing experience. You’ll also fly over the famous Whitsunday Islands, like  Hamilton Island  and Day Dream Island.

It's a bucket list destination to visit Whitehaven Beach & Hill Inlet

7. Sailing Trip with an Overnight Stay.

Sailing trips are an exclusive experience and one that’s much loved by certain tourists. Since the Whitsunday Islands are relatively close together, slowly cruising around them for two days on a sailboat could be a perfect way to enjoy them.

➡  Book your Sailing Trip HERE with Get Your Guide.

With captivating snorkel excursions each day and visits to UNESCO World Heritage-listed islands, you’ll truly discover the best of this stunning destination. With Whitehaven Beach, Hook Island, Hayman Island, and Border Island on the list, you’ll find your oasis where dreams are made from.

What is the Great Barrier Reef?

The Great Barrier Reef is truly a wonder of nature, a site showcasing remarkable variety and aesthetic beauty. Unsurprisingly, it contains the world’s largest collection of coral reefs, with assorted types of coral, fish, and molluscs that create a kaleidoscope of colors.

However, it’s not only a feast for the eyes but a site of great scientific interest, as well. The species found within it, such as the dugong and the green turtle, face a threat of extinction. As a result, studying the intricate systems that make up the Reef is crucial to preserve its biodiversity for future generations.

Are the Tours expensive?

Yes, I think the Tours can be expensive, but you get what you pay for. They are definitely worth the splurge because it’s a  bucket list adventure in Australia .

However, if you’re budget conscious, there are ways to make it cheaper. One way is to depart from closer islands, like Hamilton Island. Another is to go snorkeling in the Inner reef instead of the outer reef. Additionally, Whitehaven beach tours can be less expensive since it’s closer to Airlie Beach.

Underwater Turtle Laying on top of Plate Coral

Are there Stingers?

Yes, there are stingers on the Great Barrier Reef from November to May in the summer. It’s important to remember how beautiful the Great Barrier Reef and Whitsunday Islands are; danger lurks beneath the waves in the form of jellyfish. Specifically, the box jellyfish and Irukandji, or stingers as they are commonly known.

Don’t let their small size fool you, these creatures can be extremely dangerous and potentially deadly. That’s why wearing a Lyrca stinger suit is necessary for your swimming protection. Trust me, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

And if you do happen to get stung, please seek medical attention immediately. Don’t let these gelatinous creatures damper your reef adventure.

on the shores of Whitehaven Beach

Is the Reef better at Cairns?

After snorkeling and diving in both  Cairns and Airlie Beach , I found very little Coral Reef difference between them both. Therefore, if you only have time for one, then you can feel safe knowing that it’s not necessary to do both, as they offer similar experiences.

Note: Tourists have often looked at staying at Hamilton island Vs Airlie . This allows you to stay closer to the Great Barrier Reef .

Best time to visit?

You’re lucky that any time of year is an excellent time to visit the Reef. However, this comes with warnings over the summer Stinger season from November to May (which is also the high season) and the cooler months of June & July.

Since I’m always on a pretty strict budget,  my favourite time to visit Airlie Beach  is in the Shoulder Season in Autumn and Spring . This includes the months of March to May and September to November. These are generally out of the stinger season and low season prices.

Moray Eel & Coral Reef

Can you swim on the beach at Airlie?

The beachside area at Airlie is not the best place to go swimming for two reasons. Firstly, stingers or Jellyfish are present in the water, which is more prominent in the summer from November to May. Secondly, crocodiles are known for passing through this area, and while it’s uncommon on the beach, they will hang out in the marinas until travelling on.

While it may not be advisable to swim at the beach, you can stroll along the shores or swim in the lagoon right beside the beach. Alternatively, you can swim in a freshwater spot at  Cedar Creek Falls  while exploring more of the nearby Conway National Park.

Is one day enough for Reef?

While one day on the Great Barrier Reef is doable, it’s important to note that weather conditions and tour cancellations are always a possibility. Therefore, it’s a good idea to set aside a few extra days just in case.

For me, I always like to take a variety of experiences, see the beaches, snorkelling the inner and outer reefs, or take flights. Clearly, all these things can’t be done in one day.

Based on my experience and seeing the Great Barrier Reef from  Port Douglas ,  Cairns , Airlie Beach,  Lady Musgrave Island ,  Lady Elliot Island , and Great Keppel Island. Not one location stands out from the rest, and all have brought me a new and slightly different encounter.

Underwater, fish life

Do you see sharks?

Yes, you can see Sharks when snorkelling the region. The good news is that the sharks you’re likely to encounter are variations of reef sharks, which are known to be relatively harmless to humans. Even better, they are more likely to swim away from snorkelers than to attack them.

This is the best time for a dive at the Great Barrier Reef

E ver wanted to visit the largest coral reef system in the world? Most experienced scuba divers will agree that the Great Barrier Reef is one of the most jaw-dropping places to dive on the planet.

But when should you visit?

Peak season gets crowded, but if you leave it too late, the weather starts to turn, and the visibility isn't great – not to mention the risk of box jellyfish!

If you're planning to visit Australia, this post will show you the best time to dive in the Great Barrier Reef and what you can expect on your trip.

If you're looking for world-class scuba diving without the crowds, you should check out the different diving sites in Tulum, Mexico .

Best Time Of Year To Dive Great Barrier Reef

The best time to dive in the Great Barrier Reef is between June and October. This is peak season when the weather is warm, rain is uncommon, and the waters are calm and clear.

The downside is that diving tours fill up quickly, and there are a lot of crowds on the beaches and in local restaurants.

If you want to avoid the crowds, the low season is between November and May. However, there is a high chance of rain, the water visibility isn't as good, and deadly box jellyfish will be floating around – not great conditions for diving!

The great thing about visiting the Great Barrier Reef is that you can take an intro diving tour without any experience. The crew onboard will give you all the gear you need and show you the basics of diving safely.

If you do decide to go on a scuba dive tour, an instructor will be with you the entire time to show you the route and keep you as safe as possible.

Most tours also have an underwater photographer to snap pictures of you and the wildlife while you're diving, so you won't have to worry about investing in an underwater camera.

If you're an experienced diver with a certification, you can also go diving without an instructor, but you'll need to have all your own gear and rent a boat to take you out.

Where to go Scuba Diving in Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is about 1,429 miles long , stretching across 133,000 square miles, so there are a lot of opportunities to go diving.

If you've never been before, here are some of the top dive sites you should consider visiting.

Agincourt Reef

This reef is on the northern end near Cairns. It's a great spot for beginners and has plenty of options for snorkeling and diving on the edge of the continental shelf.

At Agincourt Reef, you'll see tropical fish, sea turtles, and even the odd reef shark. This is also the spot where you can visit the Blue Wonder Wall, where the coral garden drops vertically for over 40 meters.

Most tours to Agincourt Reef depart from Port Douglas, but a few tours will pick you up directly from any Cairns accommodation.

SS Yongala Shipwreck

Travel about an hour south of Cairns, and you'll find Magnetic Island, home to the SS Yongala shipwreck that sank in 1911. This is Australia's largest and most intact shipwreck and is now protected by legislation.

The only way to visit the shipwreck is with a licensed operator, but it's well worth the trip. You'll get to see eagle rays, manta rays, turtles, and even sharks that live around the wreck.

Yongala Dive is the most well-known licensed operator that organizes tours to the shipwreck if you're interested in going.

Whitsunday Islands

The Whitsundays is a group of 74 mostly uninhabited tropical islands. You can take day cruises from Airlie Beach to take on this incredible scuba dive tour.

Manta ray and batfish call the waters around the islands home, but you'll also see underwater cliffs, submerged offshore reefs (bommies), and flat-topped coral pinnacles.

Museum of Underwater Art

Yes, the Great Barrier Reef has its very own underwater museum for divers to peruse. This is where you'll get to see the world-renowned Coral Greenhouse Structure, a 30-foot stainless steel structure that helps dissipate the underwater currents.

The Underwater Museum is just off the coast of Townsville in John Brewer Reef, and many local tour guides have trips out to the dive site. Although you can see the museum by snorkeling, you can't beat the experience of diving down to explore every beautiful detail.

Capricorn and Bunker Reefs

Toward the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef, you'll get to meet whales, nesting turtles, and rare birds at the Capricorn and Bunker Reefs.

The water is shallow, so it's perfect for beginner divers, and it's teeming with marine life. If you're not up for diving, you can snorkel without a guide to see the tropical fish, turtles, and manta rays swimming nearby.

But diving near Lady Elliot Island and Lady Musgrave Island is the best place to see huge fish, coral canyons, and marine turtles that nest on land.

What You'll See When Scuba Diving In Great Barrier Reef

It's hard to picture the sheer amount of marine life surrounding the Great Barrier Reef. If you're a lover of ocean creatures, you won't be disappointed!

  • Between June and July is the best time to see a dwarf minke whale gathering.
  • Also, through the summer, you'll see beaked whales, sperm whales, and bottlenose dolphins.
  • Grouper, cod, and beam fish are also common – and they get pretty big in this part of the world!
  • If you love sharks, you might be lucky enough to spot a silky, silvertip, grey reef, or whitetip shark – all of which call the Reef home.

Tips For Scuba Diving In Great Barrier Reef

Visiting the Great Barrier Reef is a unique experience, so if this is your first trip, here are some helpful tips to make it a great one.

  • Get your scuba diving certification before you go so you can take full advantage of all the trips on offer.
  • When you choose a dive company, make sure they have permits for multiple scuba dive sites. There could be an issue with overcrowding at the one you planned on visiting, so you want to make sure they can switch to a different one if they need to.
  • Cairns is the most popular area, so it's usually the most crowded. Some less popular (but equally incredible) places to visit are Townsville, Port Douglas, and Cape York.
  • If you have family members who don't want to dive, many tour operators allow people to join you on the boat and go snorkeling at the dive sites.
  • If you want to try out underwater photography, most of the bigger boats have cameras for rent for around 80 AUD.
  • If you're an experienced diver, plan a multi-day trip. This gives you more time to explore, and you'll get to visit multiple sites.
  • Never touch the coral – it's a living organism, and the oils and creams on human skin can kill it.
  • Make sure your travel insurance covers scuba diving – not all policies cover water sports.
  • If you're a non-swimmer who wants to try scuba diving, be honest about your abilities with your instructor. They'll have flotation devices to get you started.

Best Dive Shops in Great Barrier Reef

You'll find multiple dive shops in each area of the Great Barrier Reef, all offering different excursions. Here are a couple of the best ones if you're looking to book in advance.

Pro Dive Cairns

This one covers the Cairns area and is known for trips exploring the most vibrant reefs. If you're an experienced diver, this is the team for you. However, non-divers and snorkelers are also welcome.

They have over 35 excursions on offer, including day trips from Cairns and Port Douglas, which are perfect for exploring as much of the Outer Great Barrier Reef as possible.

Adrenalin Snorkel and Dive

This dive shop is perfect for scuba divers of all levels (as well as snorkelers). They're based in Townsville and offer day trips to the Queensland coast and the Central Great Barrier Reef.

The sites visited range in depth from one to twenty meters, and they aim to help you spot as much marine life as possible on your reef experience.

Lady Musgrave Experience

This team is situated in Bundaberg and takes divers out on day trips aboard a high-speed catamaran. Once you're at the site, you'll get a full day of Great Barrier Reef diving in a protected coral lagoon that covers around 8km.

There's also a chance to sunbathe and relax on Lady Musgrave Island and go snorkeling around the shores. The Great Barrier Reef tour guides also offer a guided island walk where you can spot the turtles nesting during the hatching season.

Ready to Go Scuba Diving?

Most scuba divers will agree that Australia is one of the most incredible places to go diving in the world. And the best time of year to dive in the Great Barrier Reef is during the warmer months.

But if you're looking for a great place to go scuba diving a little closer to home, Florida is a great choice.
