15 Best Things to Do in Győr (Hungary)

At the junction of three rivers in northwest Hungary’s Western Transdanubia region, Győr is a city with a whole raft of Baroque architecture.

The centre of attention is the Káptalan Hill at the confluence of the Danube, Rába and Rábca, where landmarks like the episcopal castle and cathedral basilica have been raised and then demolished by invading armies since Medieval times.

Those two monuments today are Győr’s headline attractions, with Baroque design, and traces of far older architecture on the castle’s lower levels.

On the cycle-friendly squares and streets around the hill are Italianate churches and yellow-toned houses, many with museums worth a visit.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Győr :

1. Győr Old Town

Gyor Old Town

After Budapest and Sopron, Győr is the third richest city in Hungary for historic monuments.

Most of the Old Town’s streets are on straight lines in an irregular grid system that drops you at stately squares like Bécsi Kapu Tér (Viennese Gate) and Széchenyi Tér.

The architecture is Baroque and Neoclassical, mostly from the 18th and 19th century, with regal stucco facades painted in light yellow and pastel tones.

The oldest, most tangled and most compact quarter of Győr is the Káptalan Hill, the cobblestone episcopal district at the confluence of the Rába, Rábca and Danube.

Here you’ll stumble upon the cathedral and the Püspökvár (bishops’ palace), easy to pick out for its flat-topped tower.

2. Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady

Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, Gyor

The radiant Baroque church on Káptalan Hill has had a tempestuous history since it was consecrated at the start of the 11th century by King Stephen I. That initial Romanesque monument was flattened by the Mongols in 1241, and its replacement had to be completely rebuilt from the 1630s after the city’s brief Ottoman occupation.

The man responsible for the design was the Italian Giovanni Battista Rava, and work would continue through to the 1770s.

The image of the Virgin Mary on the altar at the north side of the nave is one of Hungary’s most venerated pilgrimage sites.

The altars were carved in Vienna, and preeminent painters like Franz Anton Maulbertsch and his students were hired for their altarpieces and the dazzling frescoes on the barrel vault.

3. St Ignatius of Loyola Benedictine Church

St Ignatius of Loyola Benedictine Church, Gyor

Flanked by a connected grammar school and monastery building on Széchenyi Tér, this Italian-designed church is the earliest example of Baroque religious architecture in Hungary.

Now Benedictine, the church and its adjacent monastery were founded by the Jesuits and built between 1634 and 1641. People with an eye for Baroque architecture may be able to tell that the design is based on Rome’s Church of the Gesù, which was the prototype for Jesuit churches across the world.

There’s an inscription on the lintel confirming the date of the church’s dedication in 1641. The interior decoration is from the 18th century, with solemn trompe-l’œil ceiling frescoes that were painted by the Viennese Rococo master Paul Troger.

He also produced the altarpiece, The Glorification of St Ignatius of Loyola (founder of the Jesuits), framed by marble columns and profuse gold leaf.

4. Püspökvár (Episcopal Castle and Palace)

Püspökvár

At the crest of the Káptalan Hill sits the fortified residence of Győr’s bishops, which has a mixture of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture.

At the core of the complex is the sturdy keep, with Gothic elements on its lower levels , built in the wake of the Mongol invasion in the 13th century, and a Baroque pediment and balustrade at the top.

Dating to the 15th century, the chapel connecting with east wall of the keep is a peculiar multi-level building.

A little earlier is the “runaway corridor” from the 1300s, linking to a fabulous hall with groin vaults.

The palace and castle were last restored in 1984 and there are hourly guided tours on the hour, Tuesday to Sunday.

5. Városháza (Town Hall)

Town Hall, Gyor

At Győr’s busiest spot, the Town Hall is on the intersection between the east-west Szent István út and the north-south Baross út.

This monument is an instantly recognisable sight in Hungary, and has a neo-Baroque design conceived by the architect Hübner Jenő in the 1890s.

The building has more than 200 rooms, measures 85 metres long and the central tower is 59 metres above the little formal gardens in the square.

On the facade you can make out Győr’s coat of arms, and if you poke your head inside the lobby has life-sized Carrara marble sculptures of the 13th-century King Stephen V who granted town privileges to Győr, and the esteemed 19th-century local businessman József Bisinger.

6. Bécsi Kapu Tér (Vienna Gate Square)

Vienna Gate Square, Gyor

Just south of Káptalan Hill this narrow plaza is lauded as one of Hungary’s most beautiful Baroque squares.

The west side of the square opens onto the Rába River where the mighty Renaissance Vienna Gate used to stand.

On the riverfront you there’s a section of the 16th-century ramparts which were mostly pulled down in the 19th century to help the city grow.

The main monument here is the Carmelite Church, which we’ll bring up below, but beside this is a tiny chapel holding an exquisite Baroque image of the Virgin Mary from 1717 by the Italian sculptor Giovanni Giuliani.

Just to the east of the Carmelite Church is the Altabak-ház, dating to 1620, built for canons, with delightful bay windows and a hefty wooden gate concealing a courtyard and loggia.

7. Kármelita Templom (Carmelite Church)

Carmelite Church, Gyor

The sight that gets the most attention on Bécsi Kapu Tér is the yellow-painted Carmelite Church at the southern end, unmistakeable for its single onion-domed tower.

The Carmelites came to Győr at the end of the 17th century and this Italianate church was raised in the first half of the 1720s.

On the facade, which has the characteristic Baroque volutes and pilasters there’s a image of the Virgin Mary in pediment by another Italian sculptor, Diego Carlone.

On niches on either side of the portal are statues of the famous Carmelites, Teresa of Ávila and John of the Cross.

The most valuable works inside are the altar and side altars, designed in the 1720s by the Carmelite monk Ferenc Richter.

The side altars are remarkable for their altarpieces by the Naples-born painter Martino Altomonte.

8. Diocesan Treasury, Library and Lapidary

Diocesan Treasury, Library And Lapidary

A typically handsome 17th-century palace, one street from Káptalan Hill holds the treasury and library for the Győr Diocese.

The residence was commissioned by the bishop Széchényi György in 1688 and the diocese’s extensive book and art collections were brought here in 1992. Some of the many ecclesiastical objects to check out are 18th-century vestments, bishops’ mitres, polychrome statues, paintings and works of goldsmithery like crosses, chalices and tabernacles.

The atmospheric library abounds with incunabula, codices and early Hungarian books.

In the lapidarium are Romanesque fragments salvaged from the foundations of the episcopal complex and the basilica.

9. House of the Iron Stump

House Of The Iron Stump, Gyor

At no. 4 on Széchenyi Tér is a curious early Baroque house from the 17th century.

On one corner there’s a tree trunk studded with nails, the explanation being that every tradesman passing by the stump had to hammer a nail in for good luck.

Above it there’s a circular bay window, held up by sculpted corbels.

The house is a museum hosting the Imre Patkó Collection, notable for avant-garde art by the likes of Victor Vasarely, Béla Kondor, Endre Bálint and Lajos Kassák.

This is complemented by Chinese art and an ethnographic collection from Africa, Oceania and the Far East.

10. Esterházy Palace

Esterházy Palace

This refined late-Baroque mansion on Király Utca hosts the headquarters of the municipal art museum, which has various branches around Győr.

The palace took on its current design at the end of the 18th century when it was in the hands of Count Gábor Esterházy, who transformed a set of smaller medieval properties into one resplendent house.

As for the art inside, the permanent exhibition is centred on the collection of Dr Béla Radnai, alive in the 20th century.

He picked up a trove of pieces by members of the Gresham Circle, a Budapest-based Modernist movement in the 1920s.

Some of the artists represented in the collection are sculptor Ferenc Medgyessy, and painters like István Szönyi, József Egry and István Nagy.

11. Synagogue

Synagogue, Gyor

Across the Rába, in an industrial zone, Győr’s Neolog synagogue is hard to miss for its mighty grey dome.

This monument was erected at the end of the 1860s in the neo-Romanesque style, and testifies to the financial means of the city’s industrialists at this time.

The synagogue is a little run-down, but restorations are ongoing.

The building has real architectural significance as it was used as a template for synagogues across central Europe in the late-19th century.

Since 1990, concerts and regular cultural events like the Mediawave film festival have been hosted here, and the art collection of the 20th-century entrepreneur János Vasilescu is on show.

A small Jewish cemetery sits behind, neatly kept by the synagogue’s caretakers.

12. Xántus János Múzeum

Xántus János Múzeum

On Széchenyi Tér, this museum is in yet another of Győr’s many delightful Baroque mansions.

The Apátur House, recognised by its mullioned bay window, dates to the early-1740s and was ordered by Sajghó Benedek, the Pannonhalma archbishop.

Founded in 1849, the museum inside is one of Hungary’s oldest public collections.

There are Roman, Migration Period (4th-6th centuries) and Pannonian artefacts, as well as coins and items relating to Győr’s Medieval guilds.

You can also view an exhibition of traditional tile stoves from the region, as well as postage stamps and an array of medical artefacts donated by the Petz family.

The museum is named for John Xantus, who was exiled from Hungary during the War of Independence in the mid-19th century and made his name as a zoologist travelling across North America.

13. Castle Casemates and Lapidarium

Castle Wall, Gyor

Also on Bécsi Kapu Tér is the entrance to the casemate in the Győr’s ramparts on the right ban of the Rába.

There had been walls protecting the episcopal palace on Káptalan Hill since the reign of King Stephen I at the start of the 11th century, but these took on added importance in the 16th century when Győr’s was the most powerful fort in a line of defences protecting the approach to Vienna against the Ottomans.

These walls were laced with casemates, and stuffed with firepower.

Only a small length of the ramparts and the Sforza-demi-bastion survives, and this corridor and courtyard hosts a neat little lapidarium.

Here you can peruse the fragments of the dismantled Vienna Gate, designed like a Roman triumphal arch, as well as a damaged chunk of the Fehérvár Gate, Roman-era steles, sarcophagi, milestones and an intriguing collection of antique bricks.

14. Pannonhalma Archabbey

Pannonhalma Archabbey

The essential day out if you’re in Győr is this UNESCO World Heritage active Benedictine abbey around 20 minutes by road to the south.

This hill-top monument is counted among the oldest in Hungary, with roots going back to the end of the 10th century.

It is believed that Martin of Tours, the 4th-century bishop who became venerated on the Way of St James, was born at the foot of this hill.

Pannonhalma Archabbey is the second-largest territorial abbey in the world, and has a miscellany of architecture in its basilica, cloisters and monastic buildings, from Romanesque to Neoclassical.

Three things you simply have to experience are that early-Gothic basilica, the Baroque Refectory with profuse trompe-l’œil frescoes and the stupendous Neoclassical library stacked with 350,000 volumes.

15. Xántus János Zoo

Xántus János Zoo

Just the ticket for families, this small well-kept zoo specialises in animals from Africa.

There are giraffes, lions, zebras, pygmy hippos, chimpanzees, sitatungas and baboons, as well as an array of African birdlife including trumpeter hornbill and African grey parrots.

And from around the world you can stand a few feet from jaguars, white Bengal tigers, black bears, Asian small-clawed otters, anteaters and a great deal more.

The terrarium and reptile house features monitor lizards, pythons, a variety of tortoises and turtles and dwarf crocodiles, while flamingos have their own pool to wade in.

During the Ottoman era, Győr saw much conflict and was captured by the Turkish Army for four years. At the end of the 17th century, it was a flourishing city. It achieved the status of 'free royal town', which helped to further improve the economy, trade and culture. During World War II, the local Jewish community was nearly wiped out and several buildings and factories were destroyed. There has been no regular border control between Austria, Slovakia and Hungary since January 1, 2008. This has brought about a big change for the locals who otherwise were subjected to it daily.

By plane [ edit ]

Győr's own local airport only sees private aviation traffic with an occasional holiday charter flight. Using it as an entry point for Győr requires pretty much arriving by your own, or chartered, plane.

More practical options are the international airports in large cities in Győr's wider surroundings. The closest is actually the 48.1697 17.2065 2 Milan Rastislav Štefánik Airport ( BTS  IATA ) in Bratislava , Slovakia , which is a 75-minute drive away, or 2 hours on the bus. Bratislava Airport is mainly served by budget carriers like Ryanair or Norwegian. See our guide to Bratislava for more information.

A really small bit further away, and almost equidistant, are 48.1116 16.5686 3 Vienna International Airport ( VIE  IATA ) and 47.434 19.261 4 Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport ( BUD  IATA ) both of which have a broad range of international and intercontinental connections. The travel time from either airport to Győr is less than two hours by road. Eurolines [dead link] has a twice-daily service from Vienna International Airport to Győr.

About money changing . Like all Hungarian cities, the centre of Győr is well equipped with banks and ATMs. The safest are in the banks, another best option are the shopping malls where normally more than one machine can be found. Train tickets, hotels and sometimes even taxis and supermarket accept euros (on wronger or better rates, minus five percent usually - rate can be seen at the desk). No bigger bill than €50 and prepare to get the change almost always in forints.

The city centre is full of shops, mostly selling souvenirs and clothes. There is a flower market every morning by the Carmelite church. During the main Christian holidays, there are holiday markets open in different squares and along Baross Gábor and Arany János street. Most of the big department stores, malls, hypermarkets are about 2 km south of the City Centre, near the M1 motorway exit.

THE 6 BEST THINGS TO DO FOR A DAY TRIP IN GYÖR, HUNGARY

Györ is a European city in Northwest Hungary that is frequently overlooked by tourists. It is filled with a rich history, hearty Hungarian food, baroque architecture, and chummy locals. Due to its location, this town makes one fabulous day trip if you are visiting Vienna or Budapest.

In this article I’m excited to share why you should visit Györ for a day trip and some of the best things to do while you are there!

BACKGROUND ON GYÖR

Györ is a charming village located in Northwestern Hungary – close to the Danube River. It is centrally located between Vienna and Budapest and is the 6th largest city in Hungary.

This charismatic town is surrounded by vast meadows and forested hills. During the 15th-century Györ was rebuilt after being nearly destroyed by a fire.

HOW TO GET TO GYÖR

Getting to Györ is very quick and simple. The easiest way to arrive is by train, which is around a 60 minute commute from Vienna. Tickets can be purchased in advance online  or on the day of your trip, at the train station.

However, I highly recommend purchasing your tickets in advance online for your day trip in Györ. Staff quickly informed us after purchasing our tickets there was a high probability we wouldn’t be allowed on the train for our day trip. The train was already overbooked with passengers, which was more than likely due to the holiday season. However, thankfully everything worked out and we made it Györ.

Tickets will cost you less than $30 USD if purchased outside of the holiday season or in advance. Our tickets cost us around EUR €50 roundtrip; however, it was right before New Year’s Eve and an hour before the next available train.

THE HUNGARIAN CURRENCY

The official currency in Hungary is the Hungarian Forint (HUF). Upon arrival, we immediately noticed the cost of everything was written in the HUF instead of Euros.

Thankfully, some restaurants and shops would allow us to pay in Euros, but not all of them. The cost of food and souvenirs in Györ is very inexpensive. So, you don’t need too much money for a good time for a day trip in Györ.

Make sure if you are using Euros, take small bills only if you’re not going to exchange it to the HUF.   We were unsure if the specific places we visited could or would provide change back in Euros from large bills.

If you prefer to exchange your currency to HUF, the Corner Pénzváltó  is nearby and will be happy to transfer your money.

LANGUAGE SPOKEN IN GYÖR

The primary language in Györ is Hungarian. Don’t expect many locals to speak English since tourism is very minimal there.

You may encounter frequent language barriers during your visit. But, it sure does make for one memorable experience. However, the locals do their absolute best to understand you and are extremely patient.

GETTING AROUND GYÖR

Everything in Györ is within walking distance from the train station. Going by foot is also a great way to delve deep into this city.

There are many narrow cobblestone streets that cannot be reached by car.   You will discover some amazing hidden gems down these pathways.

THINGS TO DO IN GYÖR

Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect visiting Györ. Immediately after exiting the train station, the town appeared a tad bit outdated by the train station. However, as I began to continue to explore the city, I began to feel as if I stepped into an illustration from a fairytale.

Györ’s city center was brimming with multicolored homes, ornate churches, and baroque architecture around every corner. Here are the 6-best things to do if you find yourself in Györ for a quick day trip.

1) GYÖR TOWN HALL

A couple of meters away from the train station you will see the city’s primary landmark – Györ’s Town Hall . This Neo-Classical building has been open since 1898.

When you stumble upon the Town Hall, your eyes will immediately center on the 59-meter tower and its protruding green top. On the outside of the Town Hall, you will clearly see Györ’s coat of arms. Due to its colossal size – it makes it nearly impossible to capture it all in one photo.

Curiosity arose to see what was hidden behind those colossal doors of the Town Hall. We slightly peeked our heads inside the large wooden doors of the Town Hall building.   What we discovered was a simply astonishing lobby. You’re promptly greeted with the most exquisite staircase and enormous marble sculptures dating all the way back to the 13th-century.

2) GRAB A BLUEBERRY BEER

After your journey and perusing Györ’s Town Hall – you may have built up quite a thirst and appetite. Go grab a bite to eat where the local’s hangout at Kotygós Café .

This was a   hidden treasure we stumbled upon accidentally. Kotygós Café is one adorable nook on the off streets in Györ. It is a tiny café that only has 5-tables on the inside.

The interior is quaint and cozy and set up as if you’re inside a local’s home. Their menu is only in Hungarian, but the servers do their best to translate the items for you. Put that menu down, no need for it as I have great recommendations and you will not be disappointed!

Start off by ordering a beer for your beverage. Typically, beer is not my first pick for a libation when dining out. However, the server strongly recommended, not just any beer, but a blueberry beer.

This beer had my tastebuds simply dancing. To be completely honest with you,   it was the best beer I ever had and would love to be sipping on one right now. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find this beer back home.

For my entree, I needed something hearty for our journey in the cold weather. I suggest ordering the salami, bacon, and cheese sandwich. Bread, meat, and cheese. It was pretty darn tasty and will satiate your appetite.

3) CATHEDRAL OF THE VIRGIN   MARY

There are many Baroque cathedrals in Györ that are deserving of a visit. However, one church you must see is the Cathedral Of The Virgin Mary .

I absolutely love browsing the inside of churches and mosques when abroad. To my dismay, I was unable to tour inside of this chapel because it was closed during the holidays.

Hopefully, you will be able to enter the Cathedral Of The Virgin Mary if you visit outside of the holiday season. This church is a popular destination for the Hungarians. It apparently holds a beautiful painting called   “The Irish Madonna of Hungary” that is significant to the locals.

4) CARMELITE CHURCH

Another breathtaking church to visit while in Györ is the Carmelite Church. This church cannot be missed with its blazing yellow baroque Italian exterior and ascending the onion-domed tower. The Carmelite Church’s had been around since its completion in 1725.

I wasn’t able to see inside, but rumor has it though the interior of the Carmelite Church is absolutely stunning. Apparently, you can find a pretty impressive alter and church organ with an angel centered perfectly on top.

The dome inside is also painted with assorted Biblical stories.   Hopefully, you can browse the interior of the Carmelite Church during your visit to Györ.

5) GYÖR SYNAGOGUE

The Györ Synagogue was built between 1868 to 1870. The exterior is breathtaking as it was constructed with a neo-Romanesque style. You can spot its colossal grey dome from afar.

During the late 19th-century, the architecture of this building was used as an inspiration for other synagogues across all central Europe. Now, it is currently being occupied to host concerts and cultural events within the community.

6) BAROSS GÁBOR STREET

Walk along the pedestrian-only street Baross Gabor – which is not too far off from the train station. Exploring Baross Gábor is a great way to end your day trip in Györ.

This cobblestone street is filled with numerous cafes, shops, bars, and restaurants. Here is the perfect spot to find memorable souvenirs to take back home.

While perusing Baross Gabro, don’t forget to stop by one of the street vendors and try Lángos which is a Hungarian pizza. This is a portion of popular street food in Hungry that is a deep-fried flatbread. The Hungarians like to top it with either sour cream and grated cheese, garlic butter, or a splash of garlic water.

ADDITIONAL THINGS TO SEE IN GYÖR

Here is a quick summary of some additional sites to see while spending a day in Györ.

  • Bishop Lookout Tower – See Györ from a different perspective. Catch a view of this charming city from a tower.
  • Divino – If you had enough of beer and ready to wind down, go sample some Hungarian wine at the wine bar, Divino.
  • Get lost in Györ – Wander this picturesque town by turning on every winding street in Györ. The architecture and colors of this city are truly fascinating.
  • Árkád  – If shopping on Baross Gábor wasn’t enough, you are bound to get your fill at the 120-shops at Árkád .
  • Szechenyi Square – Browse Györ’s main square that has a plethora of lovely shops, outdoor seating, and bars.

If you find yourself nearby, don’t overlook this quaint town in Hungary. Györ’s charisma will completely captivate you with all the culture this town holds!

Things To Do In Gyor, Hungary & What To See Sightseeing

Gyor is a picturesque city in Northern Hungary and has options for things to do. It is a fantastic city for sightseeing and has some fascinating tourist attractions. There are also some lovely restaurants and cafe-bars throughout the city. Many of these serve Hungarian cuisine and stock local beers or wines.

Gyor in Hungary

Gyor has some fantastic town squares, a castle and various pretty churches to visit. It has elements of other Hungarian cities I’ve visited, the architecture of Keszthely and the vibe of Pecs. During the summer, there is also an outdoor heated pool and water park for some fun called Rába-Quelle.

Gyor in Northern Hungary

Three rivers converge in Gyor, which eventually connect with the mighty River Danube . The rivers have some options for things to do, especially during the summer months. This includes boat hire, boat trips and other water sports.

Castle Wall Gyor

Gyor, like other cities in Hungary, is a great place to visit with a dog. Every walk in the city was a new opportunity for sightseeing of all the nooks and crannies of the city. I have created a Gyor travel guide with some helpful information about staying in the city.

History of Gyor in Hungary

Gyor in Hungary

Gyor has a fascinating history, and this is shown in many of the sights you can visit. The first large settlement here was in the 5th century BC, when the Celts inhabited the city. Roman merchants also moved here during the 1st century, however, they abandoned the area in the 4th century. You can see some roman artefacts in the town’s archaeology museum.

What to See in Gyor Hungary

Then, in the 5th century, Slavs settled in the area, followed by the Lombard and then the Avars. In 900, the Magyars occupied the town and further fortified the former Roman fortress. Then the First Hungarian King, Stephen I founded an episcopate here. The town then became Gyor.

Gyor’s history then matched Hungary’s with events such as the Ottoman occupation and the Astro Hungarian empire. Wikipedia has a full history on their site.

Things To Do & Sightseeing in Gyor, Hungary

Some of the tourist attractions and things to see that I enjoyed while visiting Gyor in Hungary. The city centre is excellent for a sightseeing walk because of the amount of beautiful and interesting buildings. We found plenty of fun things to do to keep us entertained for a short city break.

See Gyor Town Hall

Gyor Town Hall Front

One of the iconic buildings to see in Gyor is the Town Hall, which is right near to the railway station. It’s such an impressive building that they consider it a symbol of the city.

Győr Town Hall Tower

Architecturally, the building is Neo-Baroque and has lots of pleasant features to see. This includes the tower which is 59 metres tall. They built the town hall building between 1896 and 1898.

Gyor Sign Hungary

Out the front of the town hall they have a love Gyor sign, which is popular with tourists taking photos. The gardens around the town hall are also very nice to sit and admire. Across the road is a pretty cool fountain that sprays over a wooden walkway.

Sightseeing in The Historic Centre

Dog Friendly Gyor

The Historic Centre is where you will find most of the city’s tourist attractions. This includes many historic buildings, including churches and the castle. The sidestreets and small squares of the area are marvellous for sightseeing. There are also many monuments and fountains to see while perusing this part of the city.

See The Fortifications of The Bishops Castle

Cannons at Castle Wall

The fortifications of the Bishop’s castle are rather formidable and run alongside the river in the city. Two bastions remain of the castle and are about 10 metres tall. There are some nice parks alongside and some cannons to see too.

Equestrian statue of Saint Stephen

Alongside the castle walls is a nice place to sit on benches and enjoy the river and fortress views. The centrepiece of this is an Equestrian statue of Saint Stephen.

Bishop Tower Lookout For Fantastic Views

Bishops Tower From River

A fantastic thing to do to visit is the Bishop Tower Lookout. It is part of the larger bishop’s castle and is a fantastic viewpoint. To visit this attraction, you need to purchase tickets down the road.

Bishop Tower Lookout

Inside the Bishop Tower Lookout is some fantastic artwork, including a history of all the past bishops. This part of the castle is pleasant to visit, however, it is still home to the current Bishop of Gyor.

The first floor of the tower dates back to the 14th century, however, they added the upper floors in the 18th century. The castle’s site has been in use back in the Roman era.

Bishop Tower Lookout - Basilica View

After reaching the top, there are lots of delightful views to see, including the various baroque spires and towers of the city. You also get a bird’s-eye view of the rivers and the nearby thermal baths. They have some metal maps to help you identify buildings from the view. This is fantastic for seeing the beautiful city from above.

Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady

Basilica of Gyor Hungary

The Cathedrals’ full name is Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady and is a fantastic church to visit. It is next to the Bishops tower and a few other tourist attractions. Visiting the cathedral was pretty straightforward and they have clear opening hours.

Basilica of Győr Aisle

Inside, the church is beautiful, and there’s lots of art and decorative features to see. One of the unique features of my visit was in a side room where they housed a gold head of Saint Ladislaus’ Herma.

Győr Monastery and Church

Church of Our Lady of Kármelhegyi Győr Dark

One of many churches to visit in the city is the Church of Our Lady of Kármelhegyi, also known as Győr monastery and church. This is a pretty church, however it is rarely open and took me a few tries to visit the inside.

Church of Our Lady of Kármelhegyi Győr

The church is attached to a convent, and they consecrated it in 1725. The church is a fantastic baroque building and the statues outside are considered being the most beautiful baroque statues in Hungary.

Church of Our Lady of Kármelhegyi Győr Inside

Inside there are lots of things to see, including beautiful artwork on the ceilings and walls. The church is certainly well worth visiting if open and is free to enter.

See The Baroque Architecture of Szechenyi Square

Széchenyi Square Gyor

One of the main town squares is Szechenyi Square, a pleasant place to visit or hang out. The square has many things to see and also has plenty of options for bars and restaurants at the edges.

Mária-oszlop & church

The square has interesting buildings on the edges. This includes the Benedictine church, the Abbot’s House and various baroque palaces. Most of the buildings of the square bate from the 1th and 18th centuries. There are also some monuments in Szechenyi Square including the Mary Column.

There are also some nifty fountains that you can walk through, which is pleasant on a warm day. In the corner, they also have a model of the square to help visitors identify the buildings.

Széchenyi Square

The square has a bit of dark history, first with a Turkish prison underground here. Infront of the abbot’s house was a place of execution for noblemen. Then the last witch burning took place here in 1710. After that, in 1714, Julianna Géczy, AKA the white woman from Lőcs, was beheaded here.

Overall, Szechenyi Square is a pleasant place to spend time and is also great to see its Baroque architecture.

See The Abbot’s House

Abbot's House

One of many cool buildings to see in Szechenyi Square is the Abbot’s House. It’s a distinctive building with what looks like the eye of a god near the roof. The Abbot’s House is known locally as Apátúr-Ház, however unfortunately for me, it was temporarily closed. The building has lots of other decorative features to see and they built it in the 1740s.

Ark of the Covenant Statue

Ark of the Covenant Statue

One of many statues that caught my attention was the Ark of the Covenant Statue. The statue is pretty centrally located down the hill from the bishop’s tower and Basilica. The statue is Baroque in design and includes angels carrying the Ark of the Covenant. They erected the monument in 1731, on the orders of the Hungarian monarch. There is a legend attached to the monument involving enemy soldiers, a cardinal and the king.

Várkazamata- Kőtár in The Castle Dungeon

Várkazamata- Kőtár Roman museum

An interesting museum to visit in the historic centre of Gyor is Várkazamata- Kőtár which is in the former castle’s dungeons. First, it was rather pleasant to see the tunnels under the Bishops’ Palace and the artifacts were interesting too.

Várkazamata- Kőtár Roman

This place serves as the archaeological museum for the town and has many stone relics from the Roman and medieval eras. Unfortunately for me, the descriptions were not in English and Google translate didn’t work that far underground. My bad for not downloading Hungarian for offline translations. The staff were nice and spoke good English and gave me a paper copy of the history of the city to read.

St. Ignatius Benedictine Church

St. Ignatius Benedictine Church

One of the most distinctive buildings in Szechenyi Square is St. Ignatius Benedictine Church. IT’s a lovely building to see with two spires that you can see from various parts of the city including the Bishop’s Tower.

Saint Ignatius of Loyola Benedictine Church of Győr altar

The Jesuits built St. Ignatius Benedictine Church in the first half of the 17th century. They completed the building in 1841 after settling in Gyor in 1627. Attached to the church is a monastery and a school which dates from 1667. Since 1802, the church has belonged to the Benedictines after the dissolution of the Jesuit order.

Saint Ignatius of Loyola Benedictine Church of Győr aisle

They decorated the interior of the church in the early baroque style and is very nice to see. Highlights of my visit were the barrel-vaulted ceiling which has a fresco if the Annunciation and also portraits of old testament prophets.

Saint Ignatius of Loyola Benedictine Church of Győr organ

The side chapels were also fantastic to see, as was the organ. You can visit the church for free and have a peaceful mooch around or some time to reflect. Overall, St. Ignatius Benedictine Church is a fantastic attraction to see.

Visit Vásárcsarnok a Market Hall

One thing I like to do when slowly travelling in a city is to visit the principal market. Vásárcsarnok is the main market hall and was a fascinating place to visit and do some shopping for our apartment.

Gyor Market

I visited various stalls on my visit to Vásárcsarnok including a fantastic honey stall. They had copious options for local honey and the stallholder was very knowledgeable about the different options.

Gyor Market Honey

I also visited the butchers, greengrocers and the cheese stall for some Hungarian hard cheese. The principal aim of my visit was to stock up on paprika for our onward travels, including some hot ones. I managed to score the hottest I’ve ever tried, which was an experience.

Gyor Market Beer

Vásárcsarnok also has places to eat and bars at the edges, which added to the experience and was great for market people watching. Overall, my visit to Vásárcsarnok was fantastic.

See Statue of Pálffy and Schwarzenberg

The statue of Miklós Pálffy and Adolf Schwarzenberg Sunset Gyor

The statue of Pálffy and Schwarzenberg near the Kossuth Bridge is rather interesting to see. This statue was erected to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the liberation of Győr from the Ottomans. It shows the two generals, Adolf Schwarzenberg and Miklós Pálffy. These were the leaders that took the castle back from the occupying Ottomans.

Walk On The River Raba

Dog Walk Castle View

The River Raba is one of 4 rivers that converge in the local area. It is the most handy one for a walk on the riverbank from the centre of town. The banks have pleasant paths and pass some of the key sights of the city, including the monastery and the Bishop’s Castle.

Radó sétány Gyor

Rado-Sziget is an island between two channels of the river and is a pleasant place to visit. There is a bandstand and the Győr War memorial fountain.

Gyor Rába Beach Promenade Dog Walk

The banks of the river are a popular place for people to congregate at night and there is quite the vibe on the weekends. Rába Beach Promenade seems to be the place to be on warm summer evenings.

Do a Sunrise & Sunset Walk

Sunrise in Gyor Hungary

One of my favourite things to do when travelling is sunrise and sunset walks. These are special times of the day in the city. The low light and red skies certainly enhance the sights of the city. As a bonus, a sunrise walk is a fantastic way to do some sightseeing while few people are about.

See Zichy Palace

Zichy Palace Gyor

Another nice Baroque building to see in Gyor is Zichy Palace. It’s a pleasant building to see and has a fantastic courtyard with arcades. The history if Zichy Palace dates from 1624, however it has been rebuilt and remodelled many times since.

Zichy Palace Courtyard

It’s currently used as a wedding venue. Overall, it was a pleasant building to see from the outside while sightseeing in the city.

Rába-Quelle

Lots of people recommended I visit Rába-Quelle, a seemingly popular attraction. Sadly, Rába-Quelle was temporarily closed. Basically, it’s a big water park and spa alongside the river in the city. We were slightly too early for the summer opening of the pools.

See The Local Fountains

Another thing to do while sightseeing is to see the various fountains in the city. There are a few quirky ones and others with fantastic backdrops.

Boat Fountain

The Boatman sculpture and Fountain is on the principal shopping street in the city. It is called Csónakos fiú in Hungarian and is very pleasant to see. It’s basically a bronze statue of a man in a canoe which fits in well with the city’s prominent rivers.

Jedlik-csobogó

Another one in the central areas is Jedlik-csobogó which has an interesting design. As well as being a decorative fountain, this has a drinking tap too. It’s a modern fountain that they built in 2012. It is a turquoise soda bottle that was created by a local glass artist, László Hefter.

Drink or Dine Out

Lamareda Étterem és Bisztró

Gyor has many options for cafe-bars and restaurants throughout the old town area. This includes some places in the city’s main squares and other pleasant places on the side streets. You can choose from local Hungarian cuisine to some international flavours. Many bars and restaurants are dog friendly and Henry visited a few.

Ruins of St. Lazarus church

Ruins of St. Lazarus church

Next to Gyor Basilica in Bishops Square are the ruins of St. Lazarus church. This dates from the 11th and 12 centuries and are an interesting thing to see while in the old town of the city. Overlooking the ruins is a statue of St Lazarus.

Hi! How amazing that you got to fit in a visit with your brother! I really like the look of all those church ceilings! All the paintwork still looks so vibrant. I also love seeing Henry out and about! The last witch burning was in 1710?!?!? It always shocks me how late humanity was still doing this. Amazing interesting post as usual! ~ Christine

Gyor looks like a wonderful place to visit. The architecture is beautiful and there are so many places to see. The river walks look lovely. And we’d be particularly interested in Vásárcsarnok – the honey looks amazing!

Another great post. I definitely need to see some more of this part of Europe. The market looks great – they’re usually one of the first places I go in a new town or city. Glad you got your hot paprika! I’m a wuss so I’m happy with the sweet pimenton we get here in Spain!

Would love to explore the historic centre of Gyor. And the architecture is stunning!

I only know Budapest and Lake Balaton in Hungary. I love learning about these hidden gems in your blogposts. Gyor looks amazing with its market, churches, the riverside, and of course the castle dungeon.

It’s been awhile since I last visited Hungary in Budapest. The country had been busy refashioning itself since then and making its tourism brand more robust. So glad I get to know another Hungarian destination. Keep them coming! Gyor here I come 😉

Jan – https://flyingbaguette.com/

Gyor looks very nice and cosy with all the cobbled streets, churches, monuments and architecture. I’m thinking Henry appreciated walk along the river more than the cobbled streets? 🙂

Gyor sounds like a fun little spot to visit. What were crowds like? It’s too bad the one place was closed and the other museum didn’t have English translations. Sounds like you still managed to enjoy town, though.

What a pretty town! The cathedrals and architecture are beautiful. Henry seems to have enjoyed it as well. I love (on all of your posts) the “Is It Worth It” section.

Gyor, Hungary – the Baroque Jewel on the Danube

Gyor, Hungary was the first city I visited in the country (besides Budapest where I’ve been to countless times). For years I somehow avoided visiting Hungary properly, for no particular reason really, so when I’ve finally decided it was about time to get to know the country a bit better Gyor made an obvious first stop.

The city is conveniently located on the railway line between Vienna and Budapest and all the international trains stop there.

gyor hungary

To be honest I didn’t really know what to expect from the place since I had no idea about things to do in Gyor. The pictures I saw online looked pretty enough to convince me to visit Gyor but then every second city in Central Europe looks pretty.

I arrived on Friday early evening, in the summertime, and was instantly impressed with the vibrant atmosphere of the city. The center was packed with people, wandering around or enjoying the warm weather in the outdoor restaurants. I liked Gyor right away and with time it got only better.

gyor hungary

Table of Contents

Where is Gyor

Gyor, the city of around 130.000 inhabitants, is located in the northwest part of Hungary, right across the border with Slovakia and not far from the border with Austria.

Budapest, the capital of Hungary, is located around 120 km away from Gyor while another Central European capital, Bratislava , is even closer – 80 km from Gyor. Vienna, the capital of Austria, is also 120 km away.

gyor hungary

Why visit Gyor

Gyor is one of the oldest cities in the region, first settlements here date back already to the 5th century BC. Due to its location, at the confluence of the Danube, Raba, and Rabca rivers, Gyor has played an important role in the region for centuries.

The city is known for its impressive Baroque architecture – during that period the major reconstruction of the city took place and the effects are visible still today. In Gyor you will find a few hundred buildings that are considered monuments, fortunately, the majority of them are located in the center so you can easily see them.

The city has this typical Central European vibe and charm and if you are looking for a good alternative to overcrowded nearby capitals – Gyor can be your answer. The city also makes a perfect day trip from either Budapest, Vienna, or Bratislava .

gyor hungary

How to get to Gyor, Hungary

Getting to Gyor is actually super easy, doesn’t matter from which direction you are coming from. There are frequent trains from Budapest (more than once per hour, mostly from Keleti station), the fastest connection takes 1 hour and 20 minutes.

From Vienna you have train once per hour, the journey takes 1 hour and 10 minutes. To reach Gyor from Bratislava you need to take a bus.

The train and bus stations in Gyor are located next to each other, some 10 minutes walking from the center.

gyor hungary

How much time for visiting Gyor

Even if Gyor is packed with attractions you can easily see everything in a few hours only as the main highlights of the city are within walking distance from each other. Add to that a bit of the extra time for sitting down in one of the cafes or restaurants to enjoy the atmosphere in the city and you can spend a perfect one day in Gyor.

I stayed overnight in Gyor as I also used the city as a base to visit Sopron too (definitely recommended!). This way I could also enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of the Saturday evening in the center of Gyor.

If you are looking for a place to stay in Gyor I can definitely recommend Hotel Capitulum (8.5/10 on Booking) . The hotel has a perfect location and very spacious rooms and is a great value. Click here to check the availability and current prices.

gyor hungary

What to see in Gyor

The pedestrian center of Gyor is packed with monuments and attractions and that’s where you will most likely spend the majority of your time in the city. That’s also where you will find most of the Gyor highlights.

gyor hungary

The most important of Gyor monuments is the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, the seat of the Diocese of Gyor.

It dates back to the early 11th century when the Romanesque church stood here – you can still see its remnants in the back of the Basilica. After the war damage that over the centuries hit the building, the cathedral was rebuilt in the Baroque style with the 19th-century neoclassical facade.

The cathedral might not be very impressive from the outside but the interior is simply breathtaking with the stunning decor and rich details. It’s definitely worth visiting it inside! I only managed to take a quick peek as the wedding took place there when I wanted to visit the cathedral.

gyor hungary

Another church worth visiting in Gyor is the Saint Ignatius Benedictine Church located on the main square of the Old Town. It’s yet another example of the stunning Baroque architecture you can find in the city. The church dates back to the mid-17th century while the incredible interior was decorated a century later.

gyor hungary

Due to the history and big religious importance in the region, Gyor is packed with sacral monuments. If you are not really interested in visiting churches you still should make the exception for the two mentioned above as their interiors are real pieces of art that can impress everyone.

gyor hungary

The heart of the Old Town is Széchenyi tér, the central square surrounded by some impressive Baroque houses, such as Vastuskós house (home to the Collection of Patkó Imre) or Abbot House (where John Xantus Museum is located) – both are among the most beautiful buildings you can find in Gyor.

Széchenyi tér is vibrant with numerous outdoor restaurants and people hanging around and enjoying the atmosphere. I also spent a big part of my time in Gyor there, just observing the everyday life go by.

gyor hungary

The Old Town in Gyor is really picturesque, lined with winding lanes and charming corners. You can also find there numerous sculptures adding an extra nice touch to the place.

The most impressive one is probably the Ark of the Covenant statue, yet another excellent Baroque masterpiece in the city. You can find it at Gutenberg tér, between Széchenyi tér and Raba river.

There is also the Virgin Mary Column right in the center. While in the majority of Central European towns such columns were erected as thanks for saving the place from the plague, the one in Gyor commemorates Buda’s recapture from the Turks.

gyor hungary

For me, one of the best things to do in Gyor was simply wandering around the pedestrian Old Town, discovering all the gems, and falling for the place. I didn’t use the map, simply followed my intuition and after two days I spent in the city I walked every street at least a few times. Yet every time I managed to notice something new, it shouldn’t be surprising considering how many buildings of great historic value are around.

gyor hungary

If you are tired of all the Baroque architecture around you can find a great example of brutalism right at the edge of the Old Town. Gyor National Theatre was built in 1978 and is an impressive structure, home to the world-famous ballet company.

gyor hungary

While the majority of Gyor monuments are located in the Old Town, you can find some more gems worth checking outside of it too.

The Synagogue of Gyor is an impressive building, designed on the octagonal plan and finished in 1870. Today it is a branch of the Municipal Museum of Art. Unfortunately, during my visit to Gyor, the Synagogue was closed for a few days. I still regret I couldn’t see it inside as all the photos of the interior look really incredible.

gyor hungary

Another building that took my breath away is the City Hall, located right next to the train station. In fact, this was the very first place I’ve seen after arriving in Gyor and it was the perfect start of exploring the city.

The monumental building, built in the Neoclassical style at the end of the 19th century, dominates the area. While it’s impressive in the daytime it’s worth visiting the place also in the evening, when the City Hall is illuminated in the gold lights.

gyor hungary

Where to go next

While Gyor itself is packed with attractions, the city can be also a good base to explore the nearby area.

I used Gyor as a base to visit Sopron too, a beautiful town right at the border with Austria. There are frequent trains between the cities and the journey takes around one hour.

A bit closer to Gyor, some 20km away from the city, you can visit the impressive Pannonhalma Archabbey. This is one of the most important monuments in Hungary, dating back to the year 996.

You can also hop across the border to Slovakia and visit nearby Komarno (divided by the Danube river between the two countries) to see its unique European square where each building represents the style of a different European Union country.

Or you can simply head to one of the Central European capitals that you can find in the proximity of Gyor: Bratislava, Budapest, or Vienna.

Komarno, Slovakia

Final thoughts on visiting Gyor

I couldn’t have chosen a better first stop for my trip to Hungary. Gyor really enchanted me with its beautiful Baroque architecture and vibrant atmosphere. I didn’t expect so much beauty around yet I could find it all over the place. Every street and every second building was a real treat for the eyes and I really fell for the place.

If you would like to get a taste of Central Europe outside of the popular destinations I can definitely recommend visiting Gyor to get the laid-back vibe of the region and a taste of the beautiful architecture typical for this area.

If you are looking for a perfect day trip from either Budapest, Bratislava, or Vienna, Gyor can be a perfect option too! Don’t miss this city, it really is kind of a gem!

Very nice city. I was there few years ago. But only had a few hours for my visit. I walked around center and had a coffee in main square. I visited it in february so the weather was a bit cold. Would like to come in spring or summertime.

' data-src=

I definitely recommend Gyor in the warmer months, the city is so vibrant then and that’s part of its charm

After 5 years, I finally came back to Gyor. This time I spent 2 nights in the city so I could enjoy it a lot more. And yet, there are still some hidden gems that I missed. A reason to visit it another time. I also visited Pannonhalma Abbey. A must see place if you have time in this region. Velky Meder in Slovakia can be reached by car in half hour. Don’t expect something big, but it has a nice wellness center. Mosonmagyarovar is another cute town half hour to the west.

Wow, just bumped into your website through your article on Soviet architecture in Armenia (heading there in February) and here I am reading the entry about my home town! That’s a really accurate and detailed article, unfortunately most travel blogs are all about Budapest when it comes to Hungary, but I really appreciate that you actually visited many places outside of the capital, a thing that almost no one does. Keep up the good work and have fun traveling

Thank you so much for your kind comment! Gyor was actually the first place outside of Budapest that I visited and I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to see more of the country outside of the capital. Hungary is such a beautiful and interesting destination and it’s too bad that the majority of travelers focus on the capital only (which is great, too, but there is so much to see and do in Hungary). I still have a few places I would like to see there, enough for another trip :) Have a great trip to Armenia! All the best and happy travels!

Győr legérdekesebb látnivalói – térképpel

A turisztikai látnivalók tekintetében Győr hazánk egyik leggazdagabb települése. Nem sétálhatunk úgy a belvárosban, hogy ne csodálkoznák rá folyamatosan valamelyik gyönyörű barokk épületre, műemlékre. Mindemellett Győr egy igazi nagyváros, lüktet, fejlődik, fekvése miatt pedig a Bécs-Pozsony-Budapest vonal igen fontos közlekedési csomópontja. A megye legforgalmasabb és legsűrűbben lakott települése, lakosainak száma 2020-ban 124 627 fő.

Győr-Moson-Sopron megye megyeszékhelyét, Győrt a folyók városának is nevezik, mert a település a Mosoni-Duna, a Rába és a Rábca torkolatánál található.

A mesés fekvésű Győr történelmi belvárosának valamennyi műemlékét, épületét felsorolni is nehéz, nemhogy meglátogatni, ezért igyekeztünk összegyűjteni a legszebbeket és legfontosabbakat, melyek megtekintését mindenképpen iktassunk be, ha Győrben járunk.

Ősi műemlékek

A Káptalandombon álló Győri Nagyboldogasszony-székesegyház, a bazilika a győri egyházmegye főtemploma. Alapítása Szent István nevéhez fűződik. A székesegyház több átalakításon is átesett az évszázadok során. Legkülönlegesebb része a tornya, mely az ún. copf stílusban épült meg az 1680-as években. A Püspökvár, melynek alapítása szintén Szent István királynak köszönhető, a másik legrégebbi műemlék a városban.

A Püspökvár a mindenkori győri püspök lakhelye. Legjelentősebb eleme a négy emelet magas lakótorony, melyhez egy gótikus kápolna, valamint püspöki palota is épült. A Püspökvár további érdekessége, hogy a vár alapjaiban római kori építések nyomaira bukkantak.

Szent László herma

A herma, vagyis a fej-ereklyetartó Szent László koponyájának egy részét őrzi, a hazai ötvösművészet legértékesebb alkotása, Győr városának egyik legkülönlegesebb látnivalója.

Győri Egyházmegyei Kincstár, Könyvtár és Kőtár

A Győri Egyházmegyei Kincstár és Könyvtár elképesztő Mátyás király korából származó emlékeket őriz: gyönyörű kelyheket, textilemlékeket, valamint a Hunyadi Mátyás könyvtárából származó Corvinát is. A kőtárban középkori, újkori kövek, kőmaradványok láthatók.

Karmelita templom és kolostor, Bécsi kapu tér

Győr egyik jellegzetes épülete a különleges, ovális alaprajzú Karmelita templom és a hozzá tartozó kolostor, melynek építése a Németországból Győrbe települő karmelita rendnek köszönhető.

A Karmelita templom mellett található Győr egyik legszebb tere, a Bécsi kapu tér, melynek valamennyi épülete műemlék.

Frigyláda-szobor

Emiatt a pap kezében lévő fontos, liturgikus edény eltört. A szobrot engesztelésül állíttatta III.

A Győr belvárosában található Füles bástyában található interaktív ökológiai bemutatóhely nagyszerű kikapcsolódási lehetőséget nyújt a család apraja-nagyjának. A kazamatában Dél-Amerika élővilágába pillanthatunk be, miközben a bástya eredeti állapotát is megtekinthetjük. A kiállítás egyik leglátványosabb része egy 18 méter hosszú, 200 köbméteres paludárium, mely az Amazonas élővilágát mutatja be. A közönség a sétája során 40 méter hosszú útvonalon kísérheti végig a Föld legerősebb hangyájának, a levélvágó hangyák mindennapjait.
