Hyderabad to Hampi road trip: Things you should know

hampi road trip from hyderabad

If you’re thinking of doing a Hyderabad to Hampi road trip, here are some things that we’ve learned during the six trips we’ve done. Things that’ll help you plan your own trip.

Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the river Tungabhadra in Karnataka, South India. It was once the centre of the powerful Vijayanagara empire that spanned most the Deccan region between the 13th and 17th centuries.

Hampi is a great destination for a road trip from Hyderabad, but planning one isn’t all that simple. We’ve done six road trips from Hyderabad to Hampi over the years, and here are a few things we’ve learned that’ll make planning your own road trip a little easier.

In this post

IQ’s top tips for a Hyderabad to Hampi road trip

When to visit, and which routes to take.

  • The best time of year to visit Hampi is between November and January. March to May are the summer months, and June to September is when it rains.
  • The distance between Hyderabad and Hampi is around 380-450km, depending on the route. The journey should take you eight or nine hours, on average. If you leave Hyderabad around 5:30 AM, you should be able to beat the city traffic and get there by lunch time.
  • Our preferred route when travelling from Hyderabad to Hampi by road is via Mahbubnagar, Raichur and Gangavathi . Though we’ve also done the route via Bellary and Gooty thrice, we regretted it on two occasions.

Where to stay, and what to pack

  • Decide which side of the river you’ll be staying on. It’s not easy to get from one side to the other, so everything else will depend on that.
  • The northern side of the river tends to be warmer than the southern side, because all the rocks there absorb and radiate heat.
  • Pack a pair of rubber sandals (not slippers), like Crocs. They’ll come in handy when you’re wading in the river; they usually keep a decent grip on rocks both in and outside the water.
  • If you’re thinking of trekking, pack shoes that don’t have mesh. The tough grass seeds get stuck in the mesh, and can even poke through and get stuck in your socks. One even poked right through the skin of my heel!
  • Hampi can be hot and bright any time of the year. Pack a hat, shades and sunscreen.
  • If you’re thinking of staying at the Hampi Heritage and Wilderness Resort , cottage #10 has the best sunrise and sanctuary views, and cottage #19 has the best sunset views.

Vegetarian tip

Try the mind-blowingly spicy local mirchi bhajji (whole, batter-fried chilies). If you can, ask for red chilies instead of green ones; they have a slightly sweet flavour!

Sustainability tip

See if you can hire a bike or scooter to get around. It’s more eco-friendly than using a car. Oh, and take your own refillable water bottle, of course.

  • If you’re around Kamalapur and want to buy alcohol, Renuka Wines is pretty much the only place. Don’t expect anything fancy, though.
  • Accept that you won’t be able to fit all the things you want to do into a single Hampi trip. Identify your top priorities and just do those.

When to visit

The best time to plan your Hyderabad-to-Hampi road trip would be between November and January. That’s when it’s the coolest and there’s the least rain. It’ll still get pretty hot at midday, though, but mornings and evenings are refreshingly cool.

You’ll also feel a big difference depending on which side of the river you’re staying; the northern side is warmer and muggier because of all the rocks and fields, and the southern side is cooler because of the scrub forests.

It’s probably a good idea not to go between March and May, when it gets really hot. June to October is when it rains, and though it doesn’t get as cool as you’d think, visiting Hampi during the monsoon can also be pretty special.

How to get there

The travel time for a road trip between Hampi and Hyderabad depends on the route you choose and how fast you like to drive. On average, though, you should take about eight or nine hours, including a few breaks in between. Depending on the route (and your exact destination), you can expect to cover anywhere between 400 and 500 km.

Routes for your Hyderabad-to-Hampi road trip

There are a few different routes you can take on your Hyderabad-to-Hampi road trip. Each has their own pros and cons, and they’re all different distances. Also, the side of the river you’re staying on might influence your choice of route.

Via Mahbubnagar, Raichur and Sindhanur

This is our favourite of the two main routes for a Hyderabad to Hampi road trip, and the one we’ve used most often. It’s the shortest route from Hyderabad to Hampi at about 375 km, and the country roads are mostly in good shape. It’s also quite scenic and fun to drive on. Lastly, it’s great if your accommodation is on the northern side of the river.

Sadly, there are hardly any places to stop and eat along this route (though that might not be a bad thing in these COVID times). Also, there are usually some bad patches of road at the bridge over the Krishna river, and around Raichur. But overall, the good outweighs the bad.

Cotton fields near Raichur - Hyderabad to Hampi road trip

Via Gooty and Ballari

This is the second of the two usual routes one can take when travelling from Hyderabad to Hampi by road, and is about 470 km long. Around 60% of this route is on the excellent Hyderabad-Bangalore highway.

You might assume that this is a faster route because of the great highway, but it’s usually not the case. Because, while the Hyderabad-Bangalore highway stretch is great, the rest of the route has lots of slow truck traffic and some very bad roads. In fact, on our last trip, most of the Hampi-Gooty stretch was being repaired, and the rest was absolutely shattered. Just to illustrate: the first 30 km took us an hour! We had driven to Hampi via Raichur and returned via Gooty, but took the same amount of time both ways, and with far less frustration in the first case.

Ballari-Gooty road

Other routes you can take on your Hyderabad-to-Hampi road trip

Of course, there are other routes you can take for your road trip from Hyderabad to Hampi. For example, you could turn off the Hyderabad-Bangalore highway towards Ballari at Kurnool instead of Gooty. Or, from Raichur, you could again head to Ballari instead of towards Gangavathi.

But we don’t think that any of these routes have any major advantages over the two main ones, so we’ve never taken them. If you do decide to go off the beaten path, though, you should probably do some more research. Google Maps isn’t always reliable when it comes to the best route!

A few things to do on the way

If you aren’t in a major hurry to get to the end of your journey, you might want to stop and do things along the way. Here are a few interesting things between Hyderabad and Hampi that we know of.

  • The flat-topped, rock-strewn plateau near Jadcherla, with a temple that’s open to the sky.
  • The Pillalamarri banyan tree grove near Mahbubnagar. They say the entire grove is actually a single tree!
  • The nearly 800-metre-long stone bridge across the Krishna river at Devarsugur, which crosses the border between Telangana and Karnataka. (You’ll cross this anyway if you’re taking the Raichur route, but it looks quite nice from the side, too.)
  • The 700-year-old Raichur fort that sits on a hill overlooking a lake in the heart of town.
  • The 14 th -century Manvi fort that has great views of the surrounding countryside.
  • The small but impressive 900-year-old Konda Reddy fort in Kurnool.
  • The 11 th -century Gooty fort that towers over the town on hills up to 300 metres high.

Where to stay in Hampi

There are plenty of places to stay in and around Hampi, from high-end hotels and resorts to basic homestays and backpacker options. But we’ve found that the most important thing to keep in mind when choosing a place to stay is which side of the river it’s on. Because each side has its own advantages and disadvantages, and getting from one side to the other isn’t all that simple.

North or south of the river?

The southern side of the river is where most of the temples and ruins of Hampi are. And understandably, that’s also where most of the higher-end places to stay are. But this side of the river can get a little crowded and touristy, though maybe not during these COVID-affected times.

The northern side is far more rural, with lots of fields and fewer tourists. This side also has its sights, like the Sanapur lake, the aqueduct ruins and the hill-top Anjaneya temple. But most (though not all) places to stay on this side tend to be much more basic.

To get from one side to the other, you’ll have cross either at Hosapete or Bukkasagara. Both of these are about 30 minutes’ drive from the main Hampi ruins, in opposite directions. On the other hand, if you don’t mind leaving your vehicle behind, though, you can always cross the traditional way: by coracle boat. Pro tip: Google Maps might show you a closer bridge at Anegundi, but that’s never been completed. In fact, the quickest route from Anegundi to Hampi is over the Bukkasagara bridge.

Places we’ve stayed at in Hampi

We’ve done six road trips between Hyderabad and Hampi so far, and we’ve stayed in different places each time, each with its own pros and cons. Aside: Most places here are called some combination of ‘Hampi’ and ‘heritage’, so it can get a little confusing.

Hampi’s Boulders Resort

We recently did a road trip down to Gokarna from Hyderabad, and stayed at this place on the way back. It’s located on riverbank on the northern side of the river, and is about and 60 minutes’ drive from the main Hampi complex via the Bukkasagara bridge.

This is a massive property, with cottages both along the river and a little removed. There are different kinds of cottages with different levels of comfort and privacy, and the entire place is an interesting combination of comfort and rugged ‘outdoorsy-ness’. As the name suggests, it has lots of granite boulders in and around the property.

hampi road trip from hyderabad

  • Spectacular views of the river and the surrounding rocky ridges.
  • Plenty of opportunities to explore the area’s natural beauty.
  • Cottages are well-appointed and comfortable, and each has it’s own unique style.
  • Staff are friendly and helpful.
  • Unique swimming pool made from the hollow of a rock in the ground.
  • Prices are comparatively high.
  • It takes a bit of walking to get around the property, because it’s so large.
  • No WiFi, and mobile connectivity is spotty.
  • If there aren’t enough guests for them to arrange a buffet at the dining hall, you’ll have to eat at or order from the restaurant at the resort’s sister property next door.
  • Food is decent overall, but nothing special.
  • Watch out for monkeys pooping on your car, and for crocodiles in the river.

Hampi Heritage and Wilderness Resort

We stayed here the last time we drove to Hampi. It’s located in Kamalapura on the southern side of the river, about 20 minutes’ drive south of Hampi, and run by the government’s Jungle Lodges and Resorts division.

The place is a sprawling property, with 20 individual cottages spaced far apart. And as the name indicates, it’s designed make you feel like you’re in the wilderness. It’s even right on the edge of the Daroji sloth bear sanctuary.

Cottage at Hampi Heritage and Wilderness Resort

  • Room cost includes all meals (plus evening tea and snacks), a bear safari and a day of sightseeing.
  • Cottages are all very private.
  • Has an authentic wilderness feel.
  • Food is homely and tasty.
  • Staff is very friendly and helpful.
  • Room costs might seem a little high at first glance.
  • Because it’s so spread out, it’s quite a walk from any given cottage to the dining hall or reception.
  • Junior staff don’t speak English or Hindi very well, and are more comfortable with Kannada or Telugu.
  • Facilities are a little rough around the edges, and slightly more basic than one might expect.
  • Meal menus are fixed, and they don’t serve alcohol, though you can bring your own ( Renuka Wines is the closest shop).

Hotel Gowri

We stayed here over New Year’s a few years ago. It’s located on the northern side of the river, just below the Sanapur lake. It’s about an hour’s drive to the main Hampi complex via the Bukkasagara bridge.

This is a pretty basic place, with a few simple rooms and cane cottages, and a small restaurant. Its charm is in its simplicity, and in its location. On one side, it’s right next to a series of rice fields that make for lovely sunrise views. On the other, it’s a few minutes’ walk from the Sanapur dam and it’s spectacular boulder-strewn hills.

Hotel Gowri - Hyderabad to Hampi road trip

  • Rustic location, away from the bustle of Hampi and its surroundings
  • Affordable room costs
  • Great sunrise views over the rice fields
  • Great sunset views over the lake from the dam
  • On-site restaurant
  • Far away from the main Hampi complex
  • Basic facilities
  • Limited restaurant menu

Vijayshree Resort and Heritage Village

We stayed here during a family road trip from Hyderabad to Hampi a few years ago. It’s located on the southern side of the river on the Hampi-Hosapete road, about 20 minutes’ drive from the main Hampi complex.

This is a somewhat upmarket place, with lots of cottages spread out over a large area. It’s a heritage-themed resort, and is quite popular among the locals for events as well. Interestingly, it serves only vegetarian food, and no smoking, alcohol or non-vegetarian food is allowed on the premises.

Vijayshree Resort, Hampi

  • Conveniently located
  • Good facilities
  • Breakfast is included in the room rate, and you can choose to include other meals too.
  • Somewhat expensive.
  • Because it’s so spread out, it’s quite a walk to the reception or coffee shop.
  • The ‘heritage’ theme is a bit kitsch and superficial, and a mix of local and Rajasthani (!)
  • Can get a little crowded, especially if there’s an event happening.

Kishkinda Heritage Resort

We stayed at this place during our first-ever visit to Hampi, over 15 years ago. Things might’ve changed since then, so you might want to do some more research.

This large-ish resort is located on the northern side of the river, up against a small dam in the Sanapur lake. It’s a mid-range resort, with both cottages and rooms, and about 45 minutes’ drive from Hampi, via the Bukkasagara bridge. The round cottages are done up to give a traditional feel from the outside, but inside they’re pretty standard. Some have cane furniture, though, which adds a nice touch. Interestingly, the resort is right next to a (somewhat kitsch) water park, in case you feel like a dip.

Kishkinda Heritage Resort, Hampi

  • Beautiful approach road through the fields
  • Great view from the dam, a few minutes’ walk away
  • Large water park next door
  • Cane furniture in some cottages adds a rustic feel
  • Traditional feel only on the surface
  • May get a little crowded during events

More places to stay in Hampi

There are lots of other places to stay in and around Hampi, too. Here’s a list of hotels in Hampi on TripAdvisor, if you want to do some more looking.

What to see and do

Once you get to Hampi, there are lots of things to see and do. In fact, even after six visits, we still haven’t experienced everything Hampi has to offer. Here’s a list of just some of the things that you can do.

Popular things to do in Hampi

The vijay vitthala temple.

The Vitthala temple is probably the most famous (and popular) of all the places to see in Hampi, with good reason. The stone chariot with its granite elephants, and the pavilions with musical pillars, are something you’ll probably not experience anywhere else. This is one of only two places in Hampi we’ve been to that charge an entry fee (the other one being the lotus mahal), so be prepared. Last I checked, it was INR 30 for Indian, SAARC and BIMSTEC nationals; INR 500 (!) for other nationals; and free for children below 15. But if you’ve bought a ticket to the lotus mahal, that should get you in here too, and the other way around. ( Location )

The Virupaksha temple

The Virupaksha temple, with its massive gopuram (gateway tower) is the most visible monument in Hampi. This a living temple with a constant flow of devotees, and is located at one end of the erstwhile market street. ( Location )

Virupaksha Temple, Hampi

The sacred centre trail

The trail through the sacred centre connects the Virupaksha and Vitthala temples, and is lined with ancient temples and shrines. It even leads through a small cave and along the river, and over some steps carved into the bedrock. The trail is about 2.5 km long. ( Location )

Hemakuta hill

The rocky hillside of Hemakuta hill, which overlooks the Virupaksha temple, is strewn with lots of little stone temples and pavilions. The large Ganesha idol right at the beginning of the path is the most famous, but there are lots more further up the hill. It’s also a popular spot from which to watch the sunset. ( Location )

Heakuta Hill - Hyderabad to Hampi road trip

The Lakshmi Narasimha and Badavilinga temples

These two small temples are next to each other on the main approach road to Hampi. The first has a large statue of Lord Narasimha sitting cross-legged. The second has a massive stone Shivalinga that is always half-submerged in water. ( Location )

The palace complex

The ruins of the palace complex are one of the more impressive parts of the royal centre, off the main approach road to Hampi. The flat-topped pyramidal audience platform has great views, and the step-well nearby is quite impressive. Also interesting is the water supply system for the series of water features around the gardens, and massive fallen stone gates at the entrance. ( Location )

The Hazara Rama temple

The interesting Hazara Rama temple has intricately carved exteriors that are said to depict Lord Rama in a thousand different forms (hence its name). It also has massive, intricately carved pillars of black granite in the entrance chamber. ( Location )

The lotus mahal and the elephant stables

The lotus mahal and the elephant stables are at the end of the Muslim quarter of the royal centre, and are some of the best examples of combined Hindu-Islamic architecture in Hampi. The zenana compound in which the lotus mahal is located is one of only two monuments that we’ve encountered in Hampi for which you need to buy a ticket. The other one’s the Vittala temple, though if you’ve bought a ticket there, you should be able to get in here too, and vice versa. ( Location )

Lotus Mahal - Hyderabad to Hampi road trip

The Anjaneya hill temple

The Anjaneya temple, on a granite hill on the northern side of the river, supposedly marks the birthplace of Lord Hanuman. A long, winding staircase leads to the top of the hill, which has spectacular views of the river and the surrounding countryside. ( Location )

Anjaneya Hill, Hampi

Coracle boating

Besides Hampi’s historical ruins, boat rides on the river in traditional coracle boats are also very popular. These saucer-shaped cane boats might look like they can barely float, but they can carry a surprising amount of weight. Just remember to hold on to the sides when the boatman starts spinning your boat around to give you a thrill! ( Location )

Off-beat things to do in Hampi

One of the best things about Hampi is there are so many beautiful sights hidden away in unexpected nooks and corners. Here are a few off-beat things to do in Hampi that you might want to add to your schedule.

Trekking up Matanga hill

One of the highest points in Hampi, Matanga hill is a tall granite hill at the other end of the market street from the Virupaksha temple. It’s a 30-minute climb up a steep set of stairs leading to the temple on top, from where you’ll have sweeping views of the entire countryside. You might encounter a few other visitors at sunset. ( Location )

Matanga Hill, Hampi

Exploring the Achyutaraya temple

Though the impressive Achyutaraya temple is just off the trail through the sacred quarter, hardly anyone seems to visit. The large temple complex is at the end of the courtesans’ street, and you can even get there by trekking over the hill from the end of the market street. ( Location )

Achytaraya Temple, Hampi

Sunset at Sanapur lake

On the northern side of the river, Sanapur lake is a beautiful sight. It’s surrounded by rocky hills, and makes for a great place from which to watch the sunset. You can also take a coracle boat into the middle of the lake, do some cliff-jumping into the water if you feel like, or just drive around it and along the canal at the other end. ( Location )

Sanapur lake - Hyderabad to Hampi road trip

Watching sloth bears at Daroji

The Daroji sloth bear sanctuary is close to Hampi, and the government-run Hampi Heritage and Wilderness Resort organizes a safari every afternoon at 3:00 PM as part of their day-package. You can also drive into the sanctuary on your own (for a fee) between 2:00 and 6:00 PM. There’s a watch tower in the sanctuary, and the rangers paint the rocks with a honey-jaggery mixture every afternoon to lure the bears out so people can see them. I’m not in favour of this because it changes the bears’ natural behaviour, but I have to admit it was fun watching them. They may not have looked like Baloo the bear, but they certainly behaved like him! (Location: Hampi Heritage and Wilderness Resort | Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary )

Sunrise treks into the hills

The landscape around Hampi is spectacular, so it’s no surprise that sunrises (and sunsets) can be incredibly beautiful there. If you’re the outdoorsy kind, I highly recommend clambering up a hill of granite boulders and watching the sun at the horizon. Even better, get a local to take you to their favourite lookout point.

Sunrise near Hampi

Picnic by the river at Anegundi

Anegundi is where the erstwhile bridge across the river to Hampi was supposed to be built, before half of it got washed away. But the end of the path to the river is a great place to kick back and relax a bit in the evenings. There are a few temple ruins in the fields, and you can sit on old stone walls as you watch the river flow by and admire the remains of the bridge. You might even score a coracle ride in the river from the boatmen there. ( Location )

Anegundi - Hyderabad to Hampi road trip

Otter spotting at the Bukkasagara bridge

There’s a lively population of river otters around Hampi, and the government runs a conservation program at the Bukkasagara bridge. Of course, you’ll need special permission to enter the conservation zone, but if you’re lucky, you’ll be able to spot a few from the bridge itself. It seems the best time to see them is in the evening just before sunset. If you’re staying at the Hampi Heritage and Wilderness Resort, they might even be able to get permission for a ‘safari’ of sorts for you. ( Location )

Sunset at the Malyavanta temple

One of the very few large temples beyond the ruins of Hampi, the Malyavanta temple doesn’t get too many tourists. It’s a living temple, though, so quite a few locals do visit. It’s on a hill, so it’s also a great spot from which to watch the sunset, especially from the granite ruins in the rocks opposite the main entrance. There’s not much space to park there, though, so be prepared to do some reversing. ( Location )

Malyavanta temple, Hampi

The Pattabhirama Temple

This massive temple is just off the main road connecting Kamalapura to the Ballari-Hubli highway. Surprisingly, despite being one of the more impressive temples in and around Hampi, it’s almost completely deserted. In fact, our guide told us that most visitors to the temple are students looking for a quiet corner to study for their exams! ( Location )

Pattabhirama Temple, Hampi

The Sonkula Thayyamma temple banyan tree grove

The temple itself is unremarkable, but what is very interesting is the surrounding banyan tree grove. The entire grove is a actually a single tree with at least three individual trunks and a huge network of interconnected branches and tree roots. Also nice is the small lake next door and its resident water birds. But don’t be surprised at the litter, and the graffiti carved into the trunks and branches. ( Location )

Sonkula Tayyamma temple - Hyderabad to Hampi road trip

Hampi waterfalls

These ‘waterfalls’ are more like rapids, but the bizarre shapes that the rocks in and around the river have been carved into by the water are very interesting. There are also plenty of little pools in which to paddle your feet, or in which to take a quick dip. The rocky riverbed can be slippery, though, so try and take some rubber sandals along. And you’ll probably need a local to guide you to the right spot through the fields and banana plantations. ( Location )

Driving through the countryside

One of the things we love most about Hampi is how unexpected sights pop up out of nowhere when you’re just driving through the countryside. The drive through the fields and along the river on the northern side is especially beautiful. Keep an eye out for the ancient little stone ruins that sometimes appear right in the middle of nowhere.

Thanks IQ. So much of information and exactly what i was looking for to plan the trip. Can’t thank you enough. Mine is a brief visit – a few days with family. From what i gather, it would take several trips to see all the places and your information would be very useful every time. Thanks again

I’m glad you found this useful, Badri. Hope you have a great trip!

Very informative post. Hampi is in our list for a long time. Any good places to eat on the way to hampi from hyderabad.

Sadly, there aren’t any good places to eat on the way, unless you take the Bangalore highway.

That’s quite an exhaustive post! I always crib that there aren’t many places around Hyderabad that one can visit. This one, though a little long, can surely be a great road trip. Especially with the subtle details you provided about the other things on the way, I’ll surely be on the lookout for those, if I ever do this trip.

Glad you found it useful, Atul. We love Hampi and can’t get enough of it! In fact, we went again after I wrote this post 😅

Very useful information and well documented. Can’t wait to take this trip. Thanks

In awe!! We never heard of Hampi… and now are so intrigued!! What a fantastic place to explore! Why are the columns musical? We’d love to learn more about the meaning of symbols in the temples too! Thank you for sharing!!!

Glad you liked the post, guys! Hopefully it’ll tempt you to visit 😉 The ‘musical’ stone pillars make a musical sound when you hit them (not too hard!), and each has a different note. They say the priests used to play them like xylophones during dance performances in the temple, when the city was at its peak.

This is a really thorough guide buddy. I’d be as distracted on the way there as much as in Hampi. Some great temples then. Oh and otters.

Haha, thanks, John! 😀 Driving to Hampi is definitely something special.

Those temples are incredible! I’ve never heard of either place, so definitely adding to my list.

Understandable, Kasia. Neither is on the major international tourist itineraries for India. But I hope you like them if you happen to visit.

Great post, Irfan.

That Narasimha statue is one happy statue haha… love that smile!

The temples are also very impressive, especially Vitthala.

I think my highlight would have been that honey-licking bear.

Keep the posts coming.

Haha, this the first time I’ve thought of the statue as ‘happy’ Stefan! I’ve always found it a bit scary, with those bulging eyes 😬 It’s actually hard to pick a highlight in Hampi. Everything’s so impressive!

This looks like a fascinating road trip with many interesting natural wonders and temples. We would enjoy visiting the sloth bear sanctuary too.

Thanks, Tom. Yes, it’s brilliant, and with something new every time. I think the only way to really get to know the place would be to camp there for a month or two 😊

Just WOW!!! I can’t say what I like the most. The post is more than complete, the photos are outstanding like all your content. I have to say that I am disappointed that we couldn’t manage to see Hampi during our trip to India. It looks like we lost a LOT!!! It will definitely be on the top of our list next time that we visit India. You have done a great work here. Keep it up Irfan!

Thanks a lot for the kind words, Ignacio! 😊 Hampi isn’t on the main tourist itineraries in India, so it’s easy to miss. But it’s definitely worth visiting. Which is why we’ve been there so often 😁 Hope you can manage a visit the next time you’re here!

We might not ever get to do the roadtrip but thank you for the super detailed things to do in Hampi. I’m so glad I found this article, it has been saved to my Hampi bucketlist!

I’m glad you found it useful, Carina! All the best for your trip 😊

A Road Trip From Hyderabad To Hampi

I love road trips! Most of you know this. There is something about them that gives you a sense of freedom and relaxation at the same time. Somehow a 30-minute flight will exhaust me but a 9-hour road trip would refresh me. At times, I wonder if this is the case just with me! Before I begin to share about this road trip, I’d like to tell you that this post doesn’t really have photos. So, if you expecting a lot of photos in this one, I might disappoint you but if you like hearing stories, then go on and read! So, few years back, I did a road trip from Hyderabad to Hampi. I went to Hyderabad for a speaking event but once the road trip plan was on, two of my friends agreed to join in. We then decided to book a cab from Hyderabad to Hampi . After much consideration, the route that we chose was from Hyderabad to Shamshabad, Deosugur, Raichur and Gangavathi, which then led us to Hampi.

Being on the road once again was quite a treat; though I would have liked to be on the driver’s seat because NH7 was a delight with smooth carpeted roads and good scenery. However, this joy ended once we turned after Jadcherla but our excitement was too high to be bothered by some potholes and sketchy roads.

It’s almost 9 hours road trip from Hyderabad to Hampi.

When you visit Hampi, you would be welcomed by mostly ruins and magical landscapes. The exquisite Virupaksha temple which is also known as Pampapati temple is one of the most outstanding landmarks of Hampi. The details of carving and layers of the elaborate tower just make you awestruck. All around you would see ruins, while the temple dedicated to Lord Shiva stands tall. Scenes from Ramayana and Mahabharata can be seen all around in form of beautiful carvings on pillars and walls. Also, a very interesting part of our whole experience was visiting the temple elephant, Lakshmi. The folklore there says that the Elephant is God’s messenger who blesses you with prosperity and happiness.

We also visited the huge Tungabhadra Dam Reservoir which has been constructed on Tungabhadra River. This dam is not just stunning to look at but it is of prime importance serving the state for irrigation, generating electricity and also for flood control. Though there are a lot of religious sites like the Harihara temple, Nava Brahma temple complex along with sites like Lotus Mahal and Archaeological Museum etc. but we wanted to take a break so we halted at a resort where we got a glimpse of local culture and lifestyle of people. Unfortunately, we couldn’t click photos because it had started raining. We just drove around and explored the remaining places from the cab only.

Our last stop for the day was Lakshmi Narasimha Statue at the Archaeological Museum. It is an imposing sculpture standing at a height of 6.7m. The Lord is sitting with a coil of seven headed guardian snake of Lord Vishnu and surrounding him are lion sculptures that are said to be guarding the statue. Originally it is said that sculpture of Goddess Lakshmi was also present but due to the destructions, one can now only see the broken arm that is resting on Lord Narasimha. Again, we couldn’t explore it properly because of the rainfall.

But it was an amazing trip. Sometimes, you need that escape where you indulge yourself into the moment so much that you don’t bother if you clicked photos or not. It was one such trip. We booked a hotel room as it was late night and obviously, the route is not safe at night, because of the dense forest.

This is one of the biggest reasons why I love road trips; you get a chance to be spontaneous. Our cab agency was a very reputed agency so it was easy to work out details with them and they also helped us by booking direct airport cabs in Hyderabad and made our hassle-free trip. We needed to book cabs beforehand because now we were cutting short our Hyderabad stay and would have to catch the airport taxi as soon as we would reach back. This spontaneity gave us a chance to explore Hampi and make the most out of our trip.

But anyway, I enjoyed. It’s been a while for this trip but I just felt like sharing it with you all. I don’t really have many photos of this trip but obviously, have a lot of stories and good memories with my old friends. All I want to say is, travel a lot. It actually sets you free, in so many ways!

A Complete Hampi Travel Guide 2021: Hampi Itinerary & Tips

Hampi is an incredible UNESCO World Heritage Site located by the Tungabhadra River in Karnataka, India. The ancient city’s boulder-strewn landscape delights the eye; lush paddy fields and serene lakes soothe the soul, and the timeless ruins with their impressive history and architecture amaze the mind.

Here is a Hampi travel guide with a solid itinerary to maximize your time, details of how to get there, places to stay in Hampi, how to get around and tips for your visit!

Before we start, let us tell you that the face of Hampi has changed in the last year. If you’ve read or seen any content on Hampi before landing on our Hampi travel blog, then note that Hippie Island and restaurants like Mango Tree in Hampi don’t exist anymore. Because of this, your Hampi itinerary could look a lot different from what you had initially planned. Luckily for you, this blog post is from our visit after these changes so you’ll get the most updated information.

Brief Hampi History

Hampi was the capital city of the mighty Hindu Vijayanagar Empire for over 200 years (around 1336 AD to 1565 AD) covering all of southern India south of the Tungabhadra river. The city was an important centre of trade since it controlled both cotton and spice trade routes of Southern India and traded gold, pearls, and other precious items by the kilo. The rulers fortified the kingdom and used their wealth to build an impressive city with beautiful palaces, temples, monolithic statues, markets streets, and monuments.

After the death of the empire’s greatest king, Kishnadevaraya (reigning period 1509-1529), the kingdom soon fell to the combined armies of the neighbouring Muslim rulers of the Deccan. The city was ravaged and plundered and now lies in ruins.

In around 1 CE (the era of the Ramayana) this area was called Kishkinda – the kingdom of monkeys. The Hindu God Hanuman was born in the area!

When to Visit Hampi

Hampi’s main tourist season is in winter from October to February. To avoid crowds, you can also visit in March (explore early morning and evening) and September (rains slow down and Hampi is very green). Know that in the rainy season, however, you will not be able to take a coracle ride in the Tungabhadra due to the strong current!

We have only travelled to Hampi in these off-season months and it turned out to be awesome. Lots of peace when exploring the ruins.

How to Reach Hampi

Paddy Fields on Hyderabad to Hampi Road Trip

Flight: Toranagallu (11 km), Bellary (61 km) and Belgaum (191 km) are the nearest airports to Hampi. However, since flights are limited to these locations, it would be best to fly to Bangalore (351 km) and then take a bus or hire a car and drive for around 6 hours to Hampi. Book your flight here .

Car: Hampi is at a drivable distance from major cities like Bangalore (351 km or 6 hours), Hyderabad (385 km or 7.5 hours), and Panjim Goa (346 km or 8 hours). We love this method of transport and have always gone on a Hyderabad to Hampi road trip. The drive is a pleasurable one with vast fields and bouldered hills.

Bus: You can book an overnight bus to Hampi in all cities mentioned above like Bangalore, Hyderabad and Goa. You can book this on Redbus. If living in the neighbouring town of Hospet, you can catch a local KSRTC bus to Hampi which takes about half an hour.

Train: Hospet Railway Station, located about 12 km from Hampi is the nearest station. It is directly connected to major cities like Bangalore, Hyderabad, Goa, etc. From Hospet, you can take a local bus to Hampi which takes about half an hour.

Days Required to Explore Hampi

You need a total of at least three days to see the main sights of Hampi – Two days to explore the heritage area side and one to explore the other side of the river – Anegundi, Anjaneya Hill, etc.!

Four-five days is ideal for a slower, more comfortable, visit!

Places to Stay in Hampi

To make the most of your time in Hampi, it is best to stay at a distance of 0-10 km from Hampi – the closer the better! Know that Hampi isn’t a town in itself. Locals live in a small village called New Hampi but the location doesn’t have any hotels or accommodation. So, you will have to opt for the area near Hampi or at nearby villages.

We have stayed at below given (first two) Hampi resorts and hotels and highly recommend them in terms of location.

Clarks Inn – Located in Kamalapur Town 4.7 km from Hampi’s main attractions, it makes for an ideal place to stay. Small but well-appointed rooms with an in-house restaurant and a small pool! Perfect for those who’ll spend their days exploring and look for only basic comfort in their accommodation. We booked this for only Rs.2000 per night making it a super budget stay, but per our understanding prices are not so low during season time. Check prices and book property here .

Heritage Resort Hampi – Located 7 km from Hampi, this resort is a great mid-range option for families and couples looking for a relaxed and comfortable stay amongst nature. Large rooms, great food at the restaurants, happy hours, evening entertainment, amazing greenery (lots of mango trees) and a decent-sized swimming pool make this stay option one of the most ideal resorts in Hampi. Check prices and book this property here .

Evolve Back Hampi – For the ultimate luxury, opt for this Hampi resort located 9 km away. The architecture of the resort is inspired by that of the Vijayanagar Empire. You’ll feel like you’re staying in a palace. We haven’t stayed here but would love to someday! Check prices and book property her e .

hampi road trip from hyderabad

If you’re on a tight budget and don’t care much about worldly comforts, opt for a homestay. You’ll not only save money but also have an authentic local experience.

How to Get Around Hampi

Having your own set of wheels is super convenient. However, if you can’t do that, hire an auto-rickshaw for the day.

You can also opt to hire rickshaws to transport you from one location to the other but this might be more time consuming and you may not find rickshaws outside all points of interest especially if travelling out of season.

Earlier, scooters used to be available for rent, but now due to the demolition of the hippie area, we are not sure if it is possible. It would be best to enquire about scooter hire at your accommodation or ask guides in the Hampi area on Day 1.

Hampi Itinerary – 3 Days

Here is a 3-day Hampi itinerary that will help make the most of your time.

Day one’s itinerary has been written assuming you will be reaching by mid-day or morning, checking into your accommodation and stepping out only after lunch.

If you type Hampi on Google Maps, it takes you to the main Hampi area consisting of Virupaksha Temple and Hemakunta Hills. This is the area you should explore today to get a flavour of what Hampi is all about.

Park your car at the Virupaksha Temple parking or take an auto till there and start your walking adventure for the day. You won’t need a vehicle till after sunset to go back to your hotel.

Sri Virupaksha Temple

The twin gopurams and ornate pillars of Virupaksha Temple from the inside

Dedicated to Virupaksha, an incarnation of Shiva, this is the most popular and probably the oldest temple in Hampi as it was built in the 7th century (most other sites were built in the 15th century). It is a must-visit for two reasons:

  • It is the only working temple in main Hampi
  • You get to meet and get blessings from an adorable elephant called Lakshmi.

As you approach the temple, you’ll be welcomed by a beautiful gold Gopuram. Leave your shoes on the left side of the entrance (Rs.2), buy your ticket (Rs. 25 per person), and hire a guide (Rs. 200). You’ll start at a serene courtyard, admire vegetable paintwork on the roof of the main temple, gape at a fascinating opening in the wall that works like a pinhole camera, see a charming kund, and various temples dedicated to other Hindu gods.

The visit should take about half to one hour.

Hemakuta Hills

Sunset at Hemakuta Hills, Hampi, is a must add to your Hampi itinerary 3 days

When we think about Hampi, the Hemakuta hills is what comes to mind. It is a hilltop (made of one huge rock) dotted with several temples and smaller boulders. While the most iconic place to visit here is the Moola Virupaksha Temple just a 3-min walk from Virupaksha Temple, we say don’t sweat it. Just climb the hill and explore on your own though we must mention we love the frangipani tree at the Hemakuta Hanuman temple. Watch the sunset sitting on one of the cliffside benches (google sunset point Hemkuta) or anywhere else that appeals.

Remember the sun doesn’t set at the horizon but much above it due to the haze in the area. Don’t miss the sunset thinking you have a lot of time. Also, as soon as the sun sets, get ready to leave. If you don’t, a police guard will usher you out.

Wondering why this is important? Well after sunset, bears and leopards freely roam the Hampi area. You wouldn’t want to serve yourself as dinner to these animals 😛

Vijaya Vitthala Temple

Vijaya Vittala Temple Entrance Gopuram in Hampi

The Vithalla Temple is dedicated to Vittala, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is the most popular, beautiful and fascinating structure in Hampi and attracts a significantly large crowd. Therefore, it is best visited first thing in the day.

The temple opens at 8:30 AM so ensure you’re at the parking by 8:15 AM. Since the temple complex is at a distance of about 1.3 km from the parking, you will have to choose between the two options for getting to the temple – a 15-minute walk or a golf cart ride for Rs. 10 per person. We recommend you walk to the temple visiting various sites on the way and take a golf cart when exiting to save time and energy for the rest of the day.

While walking to the temple’s entrance, you will see the Pushkarni (water tank), Guduregombe Mandapa (temple), and lastly structures that used to be a marketplace. At the entrance buy a ticket (Rs. 40 per person). Keep the ticket safely as it is used at some other sites you’ll be visiting today as well.

On entering the walled temple complex through the gopuram gate, you’ll immediately notice the stone chariot that is featured on India’s Rs. 50 notes. A marvel! Further, you’ll see the Nritya/Ranga mandapa (dance hall) that has musical pillars. When tapped, these pillars that are made of a single piece of resonant stone, make musical sounds. It’s an absolute wonder! This mandapa is shut for maintenance so you may be shown this phenomenon at another mandapa.

Hampi Stone Chariot at Vitthala Temple

After your visit, check out the King’s balance nearby (300 metres) or head directly to the Queen’s Bath (in the Royal Centre) which is about 5 km from here.

The visit should take about 1-1.5 hours.

Royal Centre

Hampi is divided into two – the Royal Centre and the Sacred Centre. Today, for the first half of the day, you’ll be exploring buildings in the royal centre that houses the palaces, durbars, tanks, residences, and baths used by the royals of the empire. Start at Queen’s Bath the first building in the Royal Centre area.

Queen’s Bath

hampi road trip from hyderabad

The Queen’s bath makes for a short and interesting visit. Constructed in Indo-Islamic style, the structure has a simple exterior and an ornate interior with a colossal sunken bath. Due to its distance from the royal enclosure, it is believed to be a pleasure complex. Arched corridors and ornate balconies are what makes this place worth the visit. An owl and owlets are often found inside the empty bath. An additional delight!

After exploring the bath for about 15-20 minutes, head to the Royal Enclosure located 550 metres from the Queen’s bath. Better to take your vehicle instead of walking it if you have one!

A guide is not necessarily required to explore this structure and as such, you won’t find any outside it.

Royal Enclosure

The royal enclosure was the seat of power of the Vijaynagara Empire. In its heydays, this 59000 square meter area housed 45 buildings including the great platform, durbar halls, tanks, and underground chambers.

The main places to see in the Royal Enclosure are:

Mahanavami Dibba (Great Platform) – This 3 tier 8-meter-high platform is the only structure in the enclosure that still stands as it did back then. The raised platform was used by the king to view the Navami/Dussehra celebrations. There are beautiful war carvings at the lower sidewall of the structure.

hampi road trip from hyderabad

The Underground Chamber  – This is where spies were held for questioning. It is constructed in a manner that left spies wondering where they are and was made soundproof with flowing water above.

The Stepped Tank  – This is a 5-tiered super-symmetrical and aesthetic 7-metre deep tank that was used for ritual bathing before prayers by the royals. It is different from other tanks in Hampi as it is made of black schist stones to heat and purify the water.

hampi road trip from hyderabad

It’ll take you about 30-45 minutes to see the above three structures. Other structures in the enclosure are absolutely ruined so we did not see them. But if you wish you see them anyway then you’ll take about an hour!

Next, proceed to the Hazara Rama Temple located 280 metres from the Royal Enclosure.

Hazara Rama Temple

hampi road trip from hyderabad

The Hazara Rama temple is a small but beautiful temple that was used only by the royal family. As the name suggests, it is dedicated to Vishnu in his aspects as Lord Rama. Since the geographical area is a part of the epic Ramayana, it isn’t tough to reason why there exists a temple entirely dedicated to showcasing Ramayana stories on its walls. The pictorial stories are almost like a comic strip carved along the exteriors of the main shrine. The temple also has black marble pillars that are unlike any other in the city.

The Hazara Rama Temple will take about 20-30 minutes to explore.

Zenana Enclosure

hampi road trip from hyderabad

Now, proceed 500 meters along the dirt path to the Zenana Enclosure, a fortified and secluded area for the then royal ladies including the Queen. Per our guide, this structure was primarily used to house the royal women and protect them in times of war. The area was protected by eunuchs and the only man allowed inside was the king.

The main attraction here is the Lotus Mahal built in Indo-Islamic style. You aren’t allowed to step inside which doesn’t matter much as the beauty can be appreciated from outside itself!

You’ll take about 10 minutes here.

Elephant Stables

hampi road trip from hyderabad

Just through a pathway from the enclosure, located right outside it, is the famed Elephant Stable. This structure used to provide shelter to the royal elephants, clearly showing their importance in the empire. The architecture has fluted arches topped with Jain, Hindu and Muslim style domes. The secular nature of this Hindu empire was something we appreciated a lot.

You can explore the stables and just sit in the garden and relax for a bit. It will take another 15-20 minutes to explore this area.

Lunch and Relaxation

It’ll be around lunchtime by now. So, head to your hotel, grab a bite and relax for a bit before heading back to explore.

Note that all the famous restaurants you must have heard of do not exist anymore so eating at your hotel restaurant is a good option. If you don’t want to head back to the hotel, ask a guide for information on where to eat.

Lakshmi Narasimha Temple

hampi road trip from hyderabad

This temple is dedicated to Lord Narasimha, one of the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu, and Goddess Lakshmi as well who was his consort. It is the largest monolith statue in Hamp – an imposing sight! You’ll take about 5-10 minutes here.

Badavilinga Temple

hampi road trip from hyderabad

Located a few steps away from the Narasimha Statue is this giant shrine for Shiva. At 3 metres, it is the largest Linga in Hampi and is made of impressive black stone. Another 5-10 minutes are required to admire this structure.

Kadalekalu Ganesha

hampi road trip from hyderabad

Next visit the Kadalekalu Ganesha, a 4.6-meter statue, the belly of which resembles a Bengal gram. The temple is a beautiful stone structure decorated with ornate tall granite pillars (that reminded me of Roman ruins for some reason). This Ganesha statue was worshipped by the royals.

This structure is located on Hemakuta hills 450 meters from the Narasimha statue. It will take about 10 minutes to visit.

If you’re a devout Ganesh follower or simply would like to see another Ganesh statue, then you can also visit the Sasivekalu Ganesha – a 2.4-metre high statue of Ganesha that has a snake wrapped around it (to prevent it from bursting due to over-eating per mythology). This Ganesha statue was built for the common people of the kingdom. It is located just 170 meters away from Kadalekalu so you can visit both statues with just 15 minutes to spare.

Coracle Ride on the Tungabhadra River

View from the coracle

The coracle ride on the Tungabhadra river was our favourite experience and we’re sure you will enjoy it too. The evening is the best time for a coracle ride as the area is in shade in the evening.

The round boat (coracle) is rowed on the river between massive boulder-strewn cliffs on either side. It is incredibly serene and so hypnotising that you’ll forget you’re in present-day India. You’ll see flowing water, boulders, temples perched precariously atop these boulders and some even submerged in the water. The boatman will tell you about these temples and tell you other interesting facts about the area. Then he will ask you for permission and spin the boat. Shut your eyes and enjoy as the world rotates around you!

We only did the half an hour ride and weren’t completely satisfied, so I suggest you do the whole one hour ride.

The coracle ride costs Rs. 400 per person for half an hour and Rs. 750 per person for an hour.

Sunset at Kamalapur Lake

Watching the sunset while sitting on a bench beside Kamalapur Lake near Hampi

For sunset, just sit on the benches on the banks of Kamlapur Lake (you’ll see this from the road itself while going from Hampi to Kamalapur) and enjoy as the sun dips and the birds fly by! You’ll only be able to do this if you have your vehicle as there is no transport available in the area.

Phew, that was a long day. It feels longer than it was but for sure it will be tiring. Sleep early to be rejuvenated for the next day’s adventures.

Matanga Hill

View of Hemakuta Hills and Virupaksha Temple from Matanga Hill

Do a sunrise climb to Matanga Hill that has a small Veerbhadra temple at the top. The view from the hill is incredible. You’ll see vast expanses of paddy fields, mountains, scattered boulders, Hemakuta Hills with all its temples, Virupaksha Temple and Achutaraya Temple. You might also be shown a cave on your way up. The hike to Matanga hill is not to be missed!

I suggest hiring a guide for this hike since the path is not defined. As it is just through rocks, it is exposed and slippery in some areas so it is ideal to have someone knowledgeable and confident guide you up. Besides that, the hike isn’t gruelling at all! It takes 40 minutes to reach the top. You will have to start the hike between 5:30 AM-6 AM but confirm the time with your guide first. The hike back down is is a relatively easy one through proper stairs.

It is always better to do this hike at sunrise than at sunset due to the danger of bears after dark!

Have Breakfast and Change

It’ll be around 8:30 AM-9 AM by now. Go back to your hotel to change out of your sweaty hike wear and have breakfast. If you want to catch a little nap (like we did) you can do that too and head out by 10:30 AM -11 AM. You will not be coming back to the hotel until after sunset!

If you don’t care about hotel breakfast, then explore Achyutara temple (below) first before going back to change, as it is located right beside Matanga Hill.

Achyutaraya Temple

A view of Achyutaraya temple from Matanga Hill in Hmapi

We didn’t visit this temple ourselves (despite plenty of requests to our guide), however, it is a great place to visit as far as I know. It is a temple dedicated to Lord Tiruvengalanatha, a form of Vishnu. The pillars and walls of the temple have exquisite carvings and ornamentation. The temple is secluded so few people visit!

Park your car/ get off at the Virupaksha Temple parking. Now head toward the opposite side of Virupaksha temple. You’ll see the Hampi Bazaar on either side and the Monolithic Bull at the base of the hill before heading to explore the temple. The visit will take an hour or so.

Note that this temple cannot be visited after 5 pm as leopards have often been stopped after that time, so visiting during the daytime is ideal!

Lunch at Baba Café

Baba Cafe is an awesome place to have lunch near Hampi

Head to the other side of the river for a relaxing lunch at Baba café. This café is reminiscent of the hippie island days with a similar vibe. Due to it’s awesome location amongst nature, the cafe makes for a great place to have some beer and international fare.

Attractions around Anegundi

Pampa Sarovar and Monkeys in Anegundi near Hampi

Visit temples at Anegundi only if you’re religious or into the Ramayana. We only visited these because our guide had planned today’s itinerary with no interference from us. As per us, these temples are not architecturally beautiful – just regular temples.

  • Chinthamani Temple: Chintamani Temple is a Shiva Temple visited by Ramayana enthusiasts. It is the spot from where Ram aimed and shot his arrow to kill Baali during his fight with Sugreev. The temple is worth considering for all due to its epic location beside the Tungabhadra.
  • Pampa Sarovar Temple: Pampa Sarovar is a sacred lake for Hindus – one of the 5 sacred lakes (Panch Sarovar) in Hindu mythology. The temple is constructed where Pampa (a form of Parvati) punishes herself to show her dedication to Shiva. If you’re not into mythology, consider visiting only from November to December when lotuses are in full bloom at Pampa Sarovar Lake.
  • Anegundi Fort: The Anegundi with its many gates, tombs and temples (Ganesha Cave Temple and Durga Temple) is a sprawling fort that once used to guard the region.

Another famous spot is Sanapur Lake. Again, we did not find it worth the visit. This is where cliff jumping took place. However, per our guide cliff jumping is now banned as several people have lost their lives while at it. If you wish to cliff jump, do ask the locals before attempting it. We did a coracle ride here too but it paled in comparison to the one on the Tungabhadra. Do a coracle ride here only in the Monsoons when coracle rides in the Tungabhadra are not possible due to the strong current.

Paddy fields around Hampi

You can do all the things mentioned above if they appeal to you. Else, simply drive around the area through lush paddy fields. This is the bit I loved. Riding a bike here (if available) is an excellent option!

Anjaneya Hill

This hill is known to be the birthplace of Lord Hanuman! There is a Hanuman Temple on top of the hill which takes about 2 hours to climb through a well-defined shaded path. Check the sunset time on google and start your hike up well in time to be able to explore the temple and see a spectacular sunset from the top!

This brings us to the end of the three days Hampi itinerary. If you have more time on hand you can consider visiting the  Krishna Temple near Kamalapur, the Underground Shiva Temple  or the  Tungabhadra Dam  at a distance of 27 km from Hampi. The dam’s premises has a Japanese style garden that makes for a pleasant visit.

Read our post on the 25 best places to visit in and around Hampi for more details or options for things to do.

Hampi Travel Tips

Photography : Drones, tripods, high-resolution cameras, and any out of the ordinary camera equipment is not allowed at Hampi’s sites. We carried our DSLR without issues, however. You aren’t even allowed to sketch, paint or draw at the sites. Per our knowledge, you can do all of this on the other side of the river – Anegundi and surrounds.

Guide : Hire a guide to understand the ancient ruins better. A full day guide cost around 2000 per day but due to COVID, some may ask about 1500 per day. However, while they make navigating the ruins of Hampi a breeze and make you understand the structures better, they also kind of put pressure on you to hurry up in order to show you as much as possible.

If you’re okay with that, do use full day guides. Honestly, we felt it was a bit rushed.

Photographers, bloggers and vloggers would be better off hiring guides at specific structures. Follow this itinerary and hire guides at Vithalla Temple, Royal Center, and for the Matunga Hill hike.

When hiring one, ensure he/she speaks your language fluently. Ours wasn’t very fluent in English or Hindi so sometimes it got very difficult to understand what he was explaining.

Google Maps : Download offline maps of the area on Google Maps to navigate easily. The internet is quite sketchy in Hampi.

Cash : Keep cash on you to pay for things like tender coconut, sugar cane juice, entry tickets, guide hire, coracle ride etc. While UPI is widely accepted, it doesn’t work a lot of times because of bad internet.

Shoes : Wear comfortable walking or sport shoes as you’ll be walking all day and hopefully even hiking.

Clothes : Wear comfortable clothing in Hampi. There are no restrictions on what you wear to temples. However, it will be better to dress appropriately (cover midriff and knees) to not hurt the religious sentiments of worshippers.

Day Bag Items : Important things to carry in your day bag for exploring Hampi:

  • Sunscreen : Physical sunscreen without a white cast
  • Some light snacks to eat in case you get hungry midway – We always carry Whole Truth Minis for a quick but healthy bite.
  • A filled reusable water bottle (at least one each per person). We particularly like collapsible bottles to save space or the thermos type bottlesto keep water cold .
  • A reusable straw for drinks on the trip. Think tender coconut and sugar cane juice. Yum!

Hampi, Gokarna and Badami Trip

This was a long pending family trip and the day has come finally. Hyderabad to Hampi and Gokarna Road trip. Our family and elder sister’s family started from Hyderabad on this road trip to Karnataka and younger sister’s family started from Mumbai.

8 Day Itinerary of Hampi, Gokarna and Badami Caves:

Road Trip Day 1. Hyderabad to Hampi

Day 2. Hampi local site seeing

Day 3. Hampi Local site seeing

Day 4. Hampi to Jog Falls to Gokarna

Day 5. Gokarna local site seeing

Day 6. Gokarna to Murudeshwar temple to Mirjan Fort to Gokarna

Day 7. Gokarna to Badami

Day 8. Badami caves to Hyderabad

Day 1 : Started off to Hampi on Sunday morning around 7.45 am from Hitech City in Hyderabad via ORR, Jadcherla, Mahbubnagar, Raichur, Sindhanur, Gangavathi and Hosepet. Had a 30 mins stop for breakfast at Jadcherla around 9.20 am and then had a 45 mins break for lunch around 1.40 pm at a place called Manvi.  Reached our homestay, Lotus Riya by around 5pm and met up with our younger sister’s family who had already reached. Just before reaching Hampi had a break to take some photos in the lush green fields. Got fresh and went for dinner at Happy Hampi restaurant.

Day 2 : In Hampi – Engaged a local guide for 2 days to visit the places in Hampi which has historic ruins of the famous Vijayanagara Empire. Had breakfast at the Homestay and went to Vijaya Vittala Temple which has the famous Stone Chariot. It is a world heritage site and need to go there from parking by electric car (Golf cart) which are available there. Also saw nearby places, King’s Balance, Ancient Stone Bridge, Tungabhadra River, Purandaradasa Mandapa. Then came back to the parking and went to Royal Enclosure which had Mahanami Dibba, a very beautiful Stepped.

From there, went to Queen’s bath and had lunch at a local restaurant. Post lunch, visited Zanaja enclosure which houses the Lotus Mahal and Elephant Stable. One common ticket for Vijaya Vittala Temple, Museum and Zanaja enclosure. Then went to Hazara rama temple and came back to the room. Went to Virupaksha Temple in the evening which is a very old and has an elephant by name Lakshmi. There is one dark place in the temple where the shadow of the Gopuram is inverted and comes through a small hole in the wall. Came back to room and had dinner there itself.

Day 3 : In Hampi – Next morning, went to the other side of Tungabhadra River which had Anjaneya Temple on top of the Anjanadri Hill which is considered to be the birthplace of Lord Hanuman. It has a total of 575 steps to the top and it has a very beautiful view of the surrounding areas. After that went to Sabari Cave, Pampa sarovar, Gagan Mahal (which was under renovation), Ranganatha temple, Chintamani Temple in Anegundi which is a really old temple by the Tungabhadra river.

Had lunch at a local restaurant and went to the surrounding places of Virupaksha temple, Monolithic bull, Kadalekalu Ganesha, Badavilinga temple, Lakshmi Narasimha Temple (monolithic). From there went for a Coracle (small round boats) Ride in the evening. They charged Rs.500/- per head for 30 mins, which we thought was on a higher side. Returned to the room via handloom emporium (where we did some shopping) and had dinner. This was the end of a successful trip to Hampi.

Day 4 : Drive from Hampi to Jog Falls to Gokarna – Started to Gokarna around 9.30 am in the morning and decided to cover Jog falls on the way which was about 7 hrs drive from Hampi. Though we knew that there would be less water in March, we decided to go ahead and we will not be visiting these places again and again.

Reached Jog falls around 5.30 pm and it was the closing time. Requested the official there to allow us to go in as we were coming from a far place and he agreed. Water was better than what we expected and after spending around 30 mins there proceeded to Gokarna which was around 2.5 hrs from there. The roads were quite good and the ghat road was also quite big and newly laid. Reached our resort, Viraz Valley which was close to Om beach around 9.30 pm and had dinner at the in house restaurant. A long journey today.

Day 5: In Gokarna – Woke up a bit relaxed in the morning and went to the terrace of the resort which had a very good view of the surrounding places of Gokarna. Had breakfast and visited Om beach via a beautiful seaside drive. Went for a 30 mins boating at Om beach after lunch and saw Paradise and Half Moon beaches from the boat itself. Kids had a good time in the beach and from there went to Gokarna Main beach via the market which was full because of MahaShivaratri celebrations at the Mahabhaleshwar temple. Spent some time at the beach till sunset and returned to the resort around 7.30 pm.

Day 6 : In Gokarna – Started around 10 am the next morning to Murudeshwar Temple which is around 1.5 hrs from Gokarna. A very beautiful temple with a huge Gopuram (around 21 floors high) and also a very big Siva statue in the backdrop of sea. This is surrounded by water on the 3 sides and one can go to the top of Gopuram by a lift to have a very good view. Had lunch near the temple and on the way back to the resort, visited Mirjan fort. In the evening got fresh and visited Mahabhaleshwar and Maha Ganapathi temples. Mahabhaleshwar temple is a very old one and considered to be the only temple which has Shiva’s Atmalinga.

Day 7 : Drive from Gokarna to Badami – Woke up in the morning and went to Kudle beach for a walk. Returned to the resort, had breakfast and started to Badami around 11 am. It was about 7 hour drive including one hour lunch break in between and could not reach on time to visit the caves in the evening. Checked in to Heritage resort and had rest.

Day 8 : Drive from Badami to Hyderabad – Visited Badami cave temples in the morning. The historic cave temples were fantastic to get a glimpse of the rock cut (sandstone) architecture and were built by Chalukyas in the 6 th century. There are a total of 4 caves out of which 3 are Hindu and 1 Jainism related. The caves have special carvings of Vijaya Narasimha in standing position (generally seen seated), Harihara (half Shiva and half Vishnu), Seated Vishnu (generally one sees Vishnu in standing or sleeping position), Nataraja with different hand positions (9 right and 9 left) which can be matched to form 81 different dance moves.

Started back to Hyderabad around 11 am and had a brief stopover at Pattadakal which was the cultural capital then. Reached Hyderabad on Sunday night around 11:45 pm via Hungund, Mudgal, Lingsugur, Yadgir, Kodangal, Pargi and Chevella. It was a great relaxing trip and enjoyed the 1800 km long drive spread across 8 days. All in all a must visit place for travel enthusiasts.

The roads were overall good but for a very few stretches. Expect quite a few speed breakers in Karnataka on the Highways. All the family members had a great trip and enjoyed every bit of it. Click here for more of my road trips.

Hampi Trip With Hippie Island | Hyderabad

  • Group Size: 8 - 12

Hampi-Trip-Bangalore-Hyderabad

Hello Backpackers!

Have you been  Hampi-fied  at least once in your life?

Hampi, situated on the banks of the river Tungabadra, is a  backpackers paradise  as well as  Hippie haven . There are many interesting things here like hillocks filled with boulders, monuments, ruins, temples, laid back cafes, arts, shopping, trekking, etc. Located at a distance of 380 Km from Hyderabad, it makes a great offbeat weekend getaway.

Hampi is a different world altogether that takes you back in time, amazes you with its  mystical ruins , and makes you wonder how magnificent this city would have been centuries ago. It was the capital of the grand  Vijayanagara kingdom  which was ruled by Sri Krishnadevaraya. At its peak,  Hampi was  one of the richest cities  in the world . Traders from different parts of the world would visit Hampi for business.

If you think this is fascinating enough, it’s not over yet. Hampi also has mythological significanc e  attached to  Ramayana . It is said to be the Kishkinda kingdom of Vali, Sugreeva, and our very own Hanuman. A temple on top of a hillock named  Anjanadri  is said to be his birthplace. The same hill also doubles up as a place for a beautiful sunset.

While we marvel at the colored-retro setting of the Hampi, we are gonna stay towards the Hippie Island side, hike a couple of boulder-filled hillocks and enjoy pretty views from the top, including a  lovely sunset  that Hampi is famous for.

Can we ever be satisfied without getting wet? We will also take a soothing dip in the pristine waters of  Sanapur lake  under hot Hampi weather. For those who wouldn’t like to get wet, local villagers usually operate Coracle rides here. Even if one doesn’t indulge in both, Sanapur lake surrounded by stunning boulder hills is such a serene locale to just sit and relax.

What more? Lazy dinners on the cozy beds of cafes, lots of socializing, good food, music…all of them to quench your thirst for an offbeat and laid back weekend!

Let’s just  #getmuddie  in Hampi this weekend!

Highlights of the trip:

  • Anjanadri Hill (Lord Hanuman’s birth place)
  • Sanapur Lake
  • The Vijaya Vittala Temple
  • Stone Chariot on 50 Rupees note

  • Local transfer from Hospet to the camp site.
  • After reaching the stay, freshen up & have Breakfast.
  • Head to the base of the Anjanadri Hill and hike up the hill on the northern banks of the Tungabhadra river.
  • Get back to the guesthouse. Have your leisurely lunch at our charming Hippie café that serves a wide range of delicacies.
  • Post lunch, enjoy the cool breeze of the pristine Sanapur Lake – take a dip if you wish to, go on a coracle ride on the lake (optional & self-sponsored), relax and rejuvenate.
  • After a well-deserved dip, enjoy a peaceful sunset from the top of a sunset spot . This is a small 20 min hike from our stay.
  • Get back to the guest house, freshen up and laze around as you order your dinner.
  • Music, social gathering in the night with long conversations.
  • Rest in your assigned rooms.
  • Note:  All the places covered today are towards Hippie Island side – which is separated by Tungabhadra river from main Hampi.

Day 2 - Hampi side - Monuments, Ruins & History

  • Start the day with a nice breakfast.
  • Drive to Hampi town, visit the most famous Vijaya Vittala monument & explore the Stone Chariot on 50 rupees currency note. We usually have a guide here explaining interesting facts and history about this wonderful place.
  • Visit a unique structure called Pushkarini , a perfectly symmetrical stepped water tank that becomes smaller as it goes down, that looks very attractive.
  • We will take you to a local restaurant for lunch.
  • There are many more interesting monuments and historical places we will explore post lunch like Elephant Stable , Lotus Mahal and Queen’s Bath.
  • End the exploration with a visit to Virupaksha temple in the evening, the only working temple in Hampi (the rest of the places are either ruins or monuments).
  • Walk down to the flea market and shop for Hampi souvenirs.
  • Start back to Hospet town to catch return Sleeper Bus to Hyderabad.

Day 3 - Back home!

  • Reach back home early in the morning.
  • Share your memorable Hampi & Hippy Island weekend trip story with your friends and family.

What to Expect

About trip:.

  • This trip involves  basic facilities  in terms of food, travel, and stay without any luxury, whatsoever.
  • This is a group trip with shared model. It may not suit everyone – especially for those expecting privacy and comfort. It best suits for people who wish to  socialize .
  • Please do not book this trip if you are not okay with above points.
  • Non AC Sleeper Bus between Hyderabad & Hospet
  • Starting time: Friday night 10 PM
  • Ending time: Monday morning 6 AM
  • Pickup: MGBS (Mahatma Gandhi Bus Stand)
  • Local transportation by private vehicle or auto
  • Hampi is a backpacker’s paradise. The real vibe of Hampi can be felt by staying at Hippy cafes that also double up as restaurants serving delicious food from Indian to Israeli to Continental food.
  • Our cafe cum guest house is located at a pretty location close to Sanapur Lake. It has basic but well maintained rooms and washrooms. It gives ample opportunity to interact with other backpackers.

Seasonal variations:

  • June to mid-Sept (monsoons): Hampi gets its fair share of rains in this season. As one can guess, spotting sunsets are rare. However, the boulder-filled hills look very pretty in the rain. Release of water from the Tungabhadra reservoir uphill may impact our plans of taking a dip (or coracle ride) at Sanapur lake. However, we can still visit the Anjanadri hill that offers panoramic views of rocky valleys.
  • Mid Sept to Feb (winter): The weather opens up for the beautiful sunsets that Hampi is famous for. Lots of Hippies, especially from Israel visit Hampi this season. The cafes in Hippie Island are filled with backpackers and travelers. We pick Hippie Hill sunset to Anjanadri Sunset in these months.
  • Mar to May (summer): Gets really hot from mid March. We usually don’t organize Hampi in these months.

Which is the best time to visit Hampi?

There are two best seasons to visit Hampi – monsoons, and winter.

  • Monsoons (Jun to Sept) offer a pleasant climate to explore Hampi which is a naturally hot place because of its bouldery terrain. Overcast weather and drenched landscapes offer a gorgeous picture of the lost city. One would miss sunsets, but that can be compensated by abundant water in lakes and rivers.
  • Winter (Oct to Feb) presents hot days and pleasant nights. This season brings lots of Hippies to Hampi from different countries. Taking shower in the lake waters gives much-needed respite. Lovely sunsets become new normal.
  • Holi: The festival of colors – Holi is very famous in Hampi. Though it falls in summer, we still organize it around Holi time.

Things to carry

  • Toiletries, moisturizer, light towel, lip balm, wet wipes, toothbrush, toothpaste
  • A lightweight large Backpack for the trip (no suitcase, no trolley)
  • A small backpack for outdoors (to carry a water bottle, snacks, towel, etc)
  • Photo identity proof with address (Aadhar/Passport/Voter ID)
  • Poncho or rainproof jacket with a hood (from June to September)
  • Full sleeve cotton t-shirt, track pant is advised for Hampi as it’s a hot place (Oct to Feb)
  • Cap/Hat/Sunscreen (to avoid getting tanned bigtime)
  • Sunglasses (to keep your eyes fresh)
  • Power bank, charger, camera (if you wish to)
  • Proper water bottle for your trip. You may fill at our guesthouse
  • Disposable garbage covers (To separate used/unused, dry/wet clothes)
  • Any kind of sandals or shoes are fine
  • Your personal medications, if any
  • Water wear if you wish to take a dip in the Lake
  • Carrying a hand wash/sanitizer/tissues will help during the trip
  • Carry a lil bit of cash for Sunday lunch, dinner, and misc. expenses
  • Don’t carry expensive items. You are responsible for your own belongings.

What's next after booking your trip?

  • A Whatsapp group shall be created on the trip day and Vehicle & Trip Leader details will be shared.
  • It is mandatory to share your personal information with the team along with a copy of your government approved ID card.
  • You will need to share your co-traveler(s) details if you have booked more than one seat.
  • Live location of the vehicle will be sent in the group once it starts at the first point.

Terms & Conditions

  • The itinerary is fixed. No special requests to change itinerary/schedule shall be entertained. Do not give advice(s) to the Trip Leader(s) to change the itinerary.
  • Cooperate with the organizer(s) in following the schedule set for the day (especially getting up and getting ready in the morning). This will ensure travelers won’t miss out on the real fun part that is traveling.
  • Every traveler is responsible for his/her for your own safety. Don’t indulge in any illegal or silly activity that causes harm to you or fellow travelers.
  • Do not wander into the forest away from the designated trail for treks. There may be snakes, scorpions, and dangerous animals.
  • Unexpected situations: It may happen we do not cover all the places mentioned in the itinerary because of unpredictable reasons like bad weather, landslides, wild animal presence, abrupt blocking of sites by the police/forest department, delay in travel because of an issue with our group itself, traffic conditions, etc. In most cases, if the time permits, the organizer(s) will take travelers to an alternative place. But in some cases, we may have to skip a place altogether.
  • Absolutely no littering. We swear to protect our environment.
  • No alcohol & smoking during travel, treks, and other outdoor activities. There would be a separate window and space (usually at night) to have these at the campsite/homestay for interested people.
  • Travelers are expected to respect each other and help each other. Avoid discussing sensitive matters like sex, politics, and religion/caste/race.
  • Using foul or abusive language, eve-teasing, arguing with fellow travelers/organizer(s), and/or involving in the physical assault will not be accepted and will stand a chance of being deserted by the group then and there.
  • The event will stand canceled if less than 8 travelers signed up for the trip/trek which will be informed 24 hours before the trip start time.
  • Every traveler is expected to sign a liability/waiver form given by the organizer(s) after boarding the vehicle. This liability form will discharge Muddie Trails of any unexpected incident like injury/death/theft etc.

  • 50% refund shall be done if you inform us about your cancellation before 48 hours of the event start time. An email has to be sent to [email protected] to raise a cancellation request.
  • No refund/postponing is allowed within 48 hours of the event start time whatever is the reason (Health, Accident, Covid, Family crisis, Office issue, or anything else).
  • No refund/postponing is allowed for partial payment – booking fee – which is done to book your slot.
  • No refund during/after the event.

Cancellation by Muddie Trails

Muddie Trails may decide to cancel the event if there are less than 8 travelers signed up for the trip/trek.

What if we don’t get the minimum number of people for the trip? We have 2 options in this case: Option 1: Complete refund. Option 2: Switch to any other trip of the same weekend or future weekends. The difference amount will be collected from you or paid back according to the new trip cost.

Cancellation due to external factors

Muddie Trails may have to cancel the event in case of external factors that are beyond our control like Natural Disasters, Extreme Weather Conditions, Red Alerts, Political Disturbances, Bandh/Curfews, Local Issues, Road Blocks, Train cancellations, Covid-19 or any other disease outbreaks etc.

In these scenarios:

  • No Refund is allowed.
  • 100% trip amount can be used for any other new trip of the same weekend or future weekends. The difference amount will be collected from you or paid back according to the new trip cost.
  • Once you confirm your participation on the new trip, all the above Cancellation policies will apply for the same.

1) Hyd-Raichur-Gangavati-Hampi.

2) Hyd-Kurnool-Gooty-Bellary-Hospet

Pl suggest the best route, keeping in mind the road conditions that prevail now (Dec'13).

Option 1 is better & you can use the Raichur by-pass.

about Road best will be Hyd-Raichur-Gangavati-Hampi

At what point should one leave NH7 to go to Raichur while driving from hyderabad?

hampi road trip from hyderabad

I tried option 1 while going and option 2 while returning...option 2 any day...good roads all through...simple rule to follow...cover as much distance as u can on NH7

' class=

hi, what was your driving time when you went from hyd, via kurnool to hampi?

While route-1 is shorter (385 km) the road condition is very bad mostly state highways in bad shape or under repairs.

Route-2 (460 km) is mostly NHs and is lot better. This route also has many toll booths (3-4), and is a very comfortable drive.

I will suggest Route-2 to others.

BEWARE of very high speed breakers on both routes - if not carefully slowed down at the speed breakers, these will damage the car chassis.

Hi Ayan how was the road from gooty to hampi ?

Back last week from a 2 days trip to Hampi. Thanks a lot to member AyanSarkar for giving inputs on Route 2.

For the onward journey, I took the standard Route 1. The only good part about this route was the Hyderabad-Jadcherla drive on NH. The highway is absolutely super smooth, and driving was very fast and fatigue free. However remaining part of the journey on State Roads via Raichur and Gangawati was extremely bad with back breaking bumpers, broken roads and potholes in unexpected places. The journey itself from Gangawati to Hampi is quite scenic and made up a bit for all the trouble.

My advice...go for Route 2 for both onward and return trips. Happy driving!

Bro I saw ur itinary to hampi. I am.planing to go on Enfield this weekend and I am really confused to du it or not beacuse of all the reports of bad road condition.. What du u suggest.? Should I shift to train ? Or the 2nd route?

Bro, saw ur post.. So u strongly condemn route 1? I am planing to go this weekend on Royal Enfield.. Route 2 better?

The Ramble - my favourite spot.

I’ve always mentioned that places like Bombay, Pune, and Bangalore are blessed when it comes to places to explore nearby. From hill stations to beaches and heritage places, there are quite a few places close to the cities I mentioned. Talking about Hyderabad, there aren’t many.

I did a few road trips from Hyderabad since I got my Tata Punch . In the last few months, while I did these road trips, I’ll say not all of them are perfect for a one-day outing. Some of these trips are suited for weekend getaways and more.

In this blog post, I’ll talk about road trips from Hyderabad that you can do. Unlike other posts that you see on the internet, I’ve taken all the road trips mentioned in this post . All the road trips are categorized as 1-Day road trips from Hyderabad , Weekend road trips from Hyderabad , and longer road trips from Hyderabad . Further, most of these trips have dedicated blog posts too with more details. So do give them a read as well!

Note: I’ll have this post updated in the future as and when I do more such trips. So it will definitely increase from 5 😉 Added a few more road trips from Hyderabad, last updated – Feb 2023 , May 2023 , August 2023 , September 2023

Road Trips From Hyderabad

Road Trips From Hyderabad

1-day road trips from hyderabad.

I won’t be wrong in saying that what Nandi Hills is to Bangalore, Anantagiri is to Hyderabad. Located on the way to Vikarabad, Anantagiri is a small hill station surrounded by forests. It’s about 90 km from Hyderabad and takes about 2 hours to reach if you want to enjoy the drive. The roads leading to Ananthagiri are quite scenic and I’d suggest leaving early, packing your chai, and stopping off the highway to enjoy the chai amidst the green fields.

View point Anantagiri Hills

It’s best to visit during monsoons as the places come to life with greenery all around. Since it’s within a forest range, you can also spot animals and birds. There are a couple of temples and scenic viewpoints that are worth your time. There are also small empty patches of land where you can enjoy a game of cricket or football. Perfect for a one-day road trip from Hyderabad. Read more about the Anantagiri road trip .

If you love history, art, and architecture, then Bidar is a place you must visit. Located in the state of Karnataka, Bidar is about 120 km from Hyderabad . The roads are good for most of the route except for a rough patch towards the end. There are plenty of food stops along the way perfect for breakfast and lunch.

Marvelous Bahmani Tombs in Bidar

Bidar is famous for the Jhira Nanak Gurudwara which holds significance in Sikhism. Bidar fort, Bahami tombs, and madrasah are fine examples of amazing architecture. The small town has a lot of tombs around the place which is in a neglected state. There’s also a temple that you can add to your itinerary. Lastly, don’t miss out on visiting the Taj Mahal clone on the route. Read more about the Bidar road trip from Hyderabad .

Nagarjuna Sagar Dam

One of the most popular road trips from Hyderabad is Nagarjuna Sagar Dam . It’s a biker’s getaway. Located about 140 km , Nagarjuna Sagar is flocked by a lot of people. The roads are single-lane, but fortunately, it’s good throughout. Not many food stops on the way, but a lot of food carts where you can relish some good idlis.

First drive in my Tata Punch to Nagarjuna Sagar

When you read, you will witness an architectural marvel in the dam. One of the largest dams in the country, the dam is picturesque. I suggest keeping an eye on Twitter, and local newsgroups to know when the gates are open . When I went there, the gates weren’t open. I’m sure it would be a sight to behold when the gates are open with the water gushing out. You can also add another 30kms and visit Ettipotala waterfalls too. Ranganayaka Reservoir, Siddipet

While travelling within Telangana, I discovered Ranganayaka Reservoir , one of the numerous large water bodies and dams spread across the state. Situated on the outskirts of Siddipet , the reservoir is about 120 km from Hyderabad and can be reached within 2-2.5 hours if you take a leisurely drive.

Road Trip from Hyderabad to Ranganayaka reservoir

The reservoir is located in the village of Chinnakodur, and it’s massive in size, providing enough water for over 1.1 lakh acres of farmland in the area. Interestingly, it’s a crucial component of the Kaleshwaram project, which is the world’s largest lift irrigation project, initiated by the Telangana government

Blue sky and crystal reflection at Ranganayaka reservoir

For the most part, the route to Ranganayaka Reservoir is quite smooth. To get there from Hyderabad, you will need to take State Highway 1 , also known as the Hyderabad Mancherial Highway , towards Siddipet. If you are driving via the Outer Ring Road (ORR) , you will need to take ORR exit 7 . The highway is four-lane all the way to Siddipet, except for a few kilometres where the road is still under construction.

Medak, Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary

It has been a part of various kingdoms such as Kakatiya, Bahami, and Golconda. The Medak fort holds tales from its glorious past and is a must-visit. Apart from the fort, the Medak Church is another attraction. The distance between Hyderabad and Medak ranges from 120 km , depending on your starting point in Hyderabad. In my case, it is 130 km, which makes it an ideal one-day road trip destination from Hyderabad.

Hyderabad to Medak Road Trip

In Medak, you can visit the beautiful Medak Church which is amongst the largest in Asia. You can also spend time exploring the Medak Fort . About 15 km from Medak is the Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary . If you have your own car, you can take it inside the sanctuary by paying a nominal fee of Rs 100 per head. You can easily spot bison and deer during your safari.

Weekend Road Trips From Hyderabad

All the places I mentioned above are good for a one-day road trip. You can extend them for multiple days, but it’s easy and comfortable to do them in a day. The places here are perfect for a weekend getaway from Hyderabad . Though you can do them in a day, it’ll be too hectic.

Srisailam Dam

The first place that you must visit is Srisailam. The temple town is located about 200 km from Hyderabad. The roads are again single-lane and good . You’ll also pass through the tiger reserve where the roads pass through dense forests . Also, you’ll encounter ghat roads closer to Srisailam.

Hyderabad to Srisailam Road Trip - Road Conditions

There are two major attractions in Sri Sailam. The temple and the dam . While I didn’t visit the temple, the dam was in its full glory when I was there. All the gates were open and the sight of water gushing out was beautiful. Reminded me of those waterfall videos I had seen where it feels like it’s raining.

What fortune, went on a road trip to Srisailam Dam from #Hyderabad today and got to see this – 6 gates open 😍 Didn’t expect this, but it was surreal to see it. Close up in next tweet 👇🏼 @HiHyderabad @tstdcofficial @incredibleindia #RoadTrip #Travel #Socialmaharaj pic.twitter.com/4rK4OIFwiW — Atulmaharaj (@Atulmaharaj) September 18, 2022

I had to keep the vipers on all the full-time. If you’re here on a weekend, you’ll encounter a lot of traffic. Plenty of places to stay and eat. Read more about my Srisailam Dam road trip .

Ramappa Temple

If you love long drives and architecture, the newly designated UNESCO World Heritage site Ramappa Temple is worth a visit. Located about 80 km from Warangal , and about 220 km from Hyderabad , Ramappa is a perfect weekend getaway.

Hyderabad to Ramappa Temple Road Trip

The roads are sublime all along the way until Warangal. It’s a four-lane tolled highway and you can simply enjoy the scenic drive. As you take the Warangal bypass, the roads become single lanes and aren’t that well maintained.

As you read closer to Ramappa, you’ll see a lot of paddy fields and large water bodies with mountains doting the skyline. There are two places of interest here, Ramappa Temple and Ramappa Lake . The temple is an architectural marvel and no wonder a UNESCO world heritage site . The carvings, especially from the black stone still shine like metal even after 800 years.

Intricate designs at Rudreshwara Temple

2 km from there is the Ramappa lake which is no less than a sea. You can go boating and capture some bird sightings as well. There’s a Haritha resort where you can spend the night. Read more about my Ramappa Temple Road trip .

Hazur Sahib Gurudwara, Nanded

Nanded is a town in the state of Maharashtra that is an important place in Sikhism. The famous Hazur Sahib Gurudwara in Nanded is one of the 5 takhts in Sikhism . It was here Guru Gobind Ji declared that the holy book of Guru Granth Sahib would be worshipped. Though in the state of Maharashtra, Nanded is a Punjabi town due to the huge influx of pilgrims.

Hazur Sahib Gurudwara Nanded

Nanded is about 280 km from Hyderabad and the roads are just perfect. There are multiple route options, but NH 161 is the shortest and the best one. It’s a good 5-6 hour road trip from Hyderabad. If you leave early in the day around 8-9 AM, you can easily reach there by lunchtime. Visit the Gurudwara, explore the town, spend the night at the magical place, and start your return journey at leisure the next day.

Gandikota – Grand Canyon of India

Gandikota, also known as the Grand Canyon of India , is located about 400km from Hyderabad and is in the state of Andhra Pradesh. There might be multiple routes to reach Gandikota, however, the recommended one is via NH 44 ( Yes, my favourite NH44 ). I’ve done multiple road trips from Hyderabad on NH 44 ( Hampi , Chikmagalur , Lucknow to name a few ) and am quite well-versed with the highway.

Hyderabad To Gandikota Road Trip

It’s a popular destination for adventure junkies and camping in Gandikota is one of the popular activities. The Hyderabad to Gandikota road trip is a perfect weekend getaway from Hyderabad. Close to 6-8 hour drive depending on how fast/slow you drive. The roads are largely good with ample eateries and fuel stops. The scenery also is pretty good in the latter half making it a good trip overall.

Read my detailed Hyderabad to Gandikota road trip blog post for more.

Longer Road Trips From Hyderabad

All the road trips in this section are to far destinations that can take a day or two as well. Most of these road trips from Hyderabad are over 400 km and can take at least 6-8 hours one way if not more. If you enjoy driving, you should take a road trip from Hyderabad from this list too.

PS: Driving solo can be boring. So make sure you have company and a good playlist!

Bijapur, Aihole, Pattadakal

A recent trip I took was to drive from Hyderabad to Bijapur . It’s about 400 km one way and takes about 6-8 hours. You take the route towards Pune and take a detour at Humnabad towards Gulbarga. Bijapur is famous for Gol Gumbaz and Ibrahim Roza apart from having a lot of other places of interest.

Hyderabad to Bijapur Road Trip

You can also extend the trip to Aihole and Pattadakal which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites for their temples. These beautiful temples are from the 7th to 8th century and are some of the most beautiful temples you would have visited. Read more about my Hyderabad to Bijapur road trip .

If you’re into architecture and Indian history, then the UNESCO World Heritage town of Hampi is a must on your list. Located at about 370 km from Hyderabad , Hampi is a great getaway from Hyderabad. The erstwhile capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, Hampi has some of the finest temples and other structures that will leave you in awe.

Driving through the town of Hampi - Hyderabad to Hampi road trip

When in Hampi, you must visit the amazing Stone Chariot at Vithala temple along with the mesmerizing Lotus Mahal , Elephant’s stable , and others. Ideally, your trip to Hampi should take at least 3 days to enjoy completely.

Stone Chariot at Vittala temple Hampi as shown on 20 Rs note

The road trip from Hyderabad to Hampi is quite an interesting one as you pass through different terrains. As soon as you enter Karnataka, you’ll pass through Maanvi, the land of paddy as it is called. The roads are two lanes as well, so you cannot drive fast. However, the roads are in mint condition for the large part of the trip. We started at about 6 in the morning and were at our hotel in Hampi around 2 PM with a couple of stops in between.

Pune & Panchgani

If you love driving, another good road trip would be to drive to Pune. It’s about 600 km from Hyderabad and the road is pretty nice for the entire stretch. You’ll take the route from Sangareddy towards Zaheerabad, and eventually to Solapur and Pune. There are ample places to eat on the way so that shouldn’t be a worry.

Hyderabad To Pune Road Trip - All you need to know

You can extend the road trip to Pachgani and Mahabaleshwar as well. It would be a 100 km detour if you drive to Pune first. Otherwise, you can take a detour from Indapur and directly touch the Pune – Kolhapur highway before the Mahabaleshwar exit.

The entire drive is amazing and you can read more about it in my Hyderabad to Pune road trip blog post.

Chikamagalur

If you can drive about 700 km from Hyderabad and love hills, Chikamagalur can be an ideal destination. Home to some of the finest coffee in India, Chikmagalur is a must-visit for all Coffee aficionados. It is also home to the highest peak in Karnataka, Mulayangiri Peak , and is a great destination for trekkers. The roads are pretty much good for most parts of the journey except for some rough patches.

Mullayangiri Peak - Karnataka's Highest Peak

The best time to visit would be during monsoons when the place comes to life and also driving would be fun. We took almost 14 hours from Hyderabad to Chikamagalur , which is on the higher side I guess. You can also visit the nearby towns of Belur and Halebidu to experience the 11th-century Hoysala temples. Read in detail about my Hyderabad to Chikamagalur Road Trip .

Bastar, Jagdalpur

Not a destination that might be on a lot of people’s bucket lists, but I drove to Bastar from Hyderabad in August 2023. Bastar is about 550 km from Hyderabad and can take a day easily. It is one of the best road trips I’ve taken from Hyderabad. Though the roads aren’t 4-lane, or 6-lane, the condition is pretty good. More than that, the landscape is something you’ll fall in love it.

Entering Chhattisgarh - Hyderabad To Bastar Road Trip

In Bastar, you can explore some of the finest waterfalls , Kanger Valley National Park and enjoy the greenery of the place. More than that, Bastar is a culturally very rich place. With a lot of Tribal population, there’s so much to see and experience. Dussehra is a 75-day long festival that’s unique and must experience. Perfect weather would be during monsoons or around monsoons. Read my detailed blog post on the Hyderabad to Jagdalpur road trip .

Driving from Hyderabad to Lucknow isn’t for the faint-hearted. I undertook this, my longest road trip last year in October. It’s about 1500 km one way and takes about 26 hours in total . It’s advisable to have two drivers and split the driving across at 2 days at least .

You’ll pass through places like Adilabad , Nagpur , Jabalpur , Rewa , Satna , and Allahabad before reaching Lucknow. There are multiple routes and you can read about them in Hyderabad to Lucknow road trip blog post.

Beautiful lake during Hyderabad to Lucknow road trip

It’s one amazing journey where you pass through Pench National Park , the hills of Jabalpur, the mighty Narmada, and also Sangam in Allahabad. On return, I took another route, this time via Jhansi. It was longer than the previous one but with much better roads.

What’s your favorite road trip from Hyderabad?

As I said, I’ve made this list based on the road trips I’ve taken from Hyderabad. I’m sure there are a lot of other places which can be driven to. If you’ve taken some and feel that I must take a road trip there, please do mention them in the comments.
