Best Toddler Sleeping Bags for Camping

Just a few years ago, it wasn’t possible to find camping gear like sleeping bags for toddlers.  Parents who wanted to take their kids camping would have to use too-big sleeping bags or co-sleep with their kids (which I don’t recommend !).

There still aren’t too many brands making toddler sleeping bags.  In fact, there are only five which I recommend for serious camping – and two of these are even a bit too long for young toddlers (you’ll have to tie the end of the bag).

Best Camping Sleeping Bags for Toddlers

1. morrison big mo sleeping bag.

The Morrison Big Mo currently is the best sleeping bag for toddlers available.  The Morrison brand was started by outdoorsy parents.  When they couldn’t find any suitable sleeping bag for their baby, they decided to make one themselves (read the Little Mo review here).  Recently they came out with the Big Mo for toddlers.

There are two versions of the sleeping bag: 20°F down bag and a 40°F synthetic bag. Both versions have sleeves, so you don’t have to worry about your toddler wriggling out of the sleeping bag.  The 20°F is lighter (13.1oz) but even the 40°F bag is still pretty lightweight (1lb 3oz).

Both bags have tons of features like two-way zippers, machine washable, enclosed footbox, and a draft tube. The sleeping bags will definitely keep your toddler warm and comfy camping at night!

2. BabyDeeDee Travel Nest

The brand BabyDeeDee has made baby sleep sacks for a long time.  Their Travel Sleep Nest which is meant for indoor and outdoor use.  Full disclosure: The brand sent me one of these to try out with my daughter.

The sleeping bag is made from a warm, quilted material that is fairly easy to clean.  It is a TOG 3.5 rating, which means it will be suitable for around 60F.  If you want to use it for colder nights camping, you will need to bundle your toddler in layers.

There are a lot of nice features to this sleeping bag, particularly the removable sleeves and snaps at the top.  All the features make it easy to do diaper changes and get your child in/out easily.

I used the 18-36 month size Baby DeeDee bag when my girl was around 1 year old. She’s 2 years old now and the same bag still fits her. The only issue is that she can “escape” from this sleeping bag easily.  I had to sew the shoulder snaps closed to keep her inside! This is only an issue if your kid hates covers as much as mine does. 🙂

3.  REI Kindercone Kids’ Sleeping Bag

The REI Kindercone sleeping bag is best suited for kids starting at 4 years old, but it can also work very well for toddlers around 2 years old.  The full length of the bag is 66 inches but there is a built-in drawstring for cinching up the bag.  This makes a big difference in trapping warmth!  I still wouldn’t use it camping with a toddler at 25F (unless your kid is bundled very well) but it will keep you toddler toasty in the 30s.

As expected from REI, the toddler sleeping bag is of professional quality. It’s too heavy to use for backpacking but is great for car camping trips.  Also, bear in mind that this sleeping bag will probably be too warm for summer camping at low elevations.

4.  AceCamp 30F Mummy Sleeping Bag

To be clear, this sleeping bag won’t actually keep your toddler warm in 30F weather.  The temperature listed is for the low rating and not comfort. Plus, the sleeping bag is 5 feet long – which is way too long for a toddler — so a lot of heat will be lost.  The bag is better suited for older kids.

That said, this sleeping bag can work well for toddlers. It has cool designs which glow in the dark (there’s a blue version too).  So, your toddler might actually be excited about getting in it. The mummy shape helps hold heat, so your toddler should be warm in temperatures around 45F.  Just make sure you have a good sleeping pad and warm jamies.

I still like the Morrison sleeping bags better, but this is good if you only go camping in mild weather and want something which will still fit your toddler as she/he grows.

5. Big Agnes Little Red Kids

the best thing about this sleeping bag is that there is a “pad sleeve” – a sleeve where you put your sleeping pad so your child can’t roll off of it at night. It fits a 20×48 rectangular sleeping pad (compatible with the Big Agnes Short Length pad).

Some other nice features include a hood which can be easily cinched up around your child’s face. There are also storage pockets inside the sleeping bag, which is important for keeping your child’s stuffed animals (or, as we call them, “Cuddly Friends”) from getting lost in the bag.   If your child has an accident, there are exterior loops so you can easily hang the bag to dry.

The downsides? This sleeping bag is a bit long for a toddler.  Also, it currenlty isn’t in production anymore so you might have trouble finding it.

How to Choose a Toddler Sleeping Bag for Camping

If you look for a toddler sleeping bag online, chances are you’ll see something like the bag shown below.

These types of sleeping bags work well enough for sleepovers. They might be okay for camping in really warm temperatures too.  But they aren’t meant for tent camping in temperatures below 50F or so.

For camping, look for toddler sleeping bags which are:

• Mummy shaped:  This traps heat better
• The right size: If the sleeping bag is too big, there will be too much room and it won’t be able to trap heat well.
• Temperature rated:  Be warned that most bags list the  lower limit  rating and not the  comfort rating.  The comfort rating is usually 10-25F higher than the listed rating.
• Sleeves:  Most toddlers won’t keep their arms inside a normal sleeping bag.  Once their arms come out, so does the warmth.  Unless you know that your toddler will keep arms inside, choose one with sleeves (which means the Morrison or BabyDeeDee bag).

Adapting a Youth Sleeping Bag for a Toddler

I really don’t recommend using a kids sleeping bag for a 1-year old.  Get the Morrison or BabyDee sleeping bag for kids this young. However, you might  be able to use a youth sleeping bag for a 2-year old or older toddler.

You will need to:

• Tie the end of the sleeping bag to make it shorter
• Or stuff the bottom of the sleeping bag with a blanket to fill the empty space

Unfortunately, there’s no way to shorten the  width  of the sleeping bag. That means your tiny toddler might be swimming around in the youth sleeping bag.  A lot of heat will be lost around the neck area. You probably won’t be able to cinch the hood (if there is one) because your toddler will literally get lost inside the bag.

Yes, it can still work — but you might want to bring a blanket or two as a backup.  And it helps to test out the sleeping bag at home first instead of discovering how giant it is on your toddler once you are at camp.

Traveling with toddlers isn't easy, but you can still have a wonderful time exploring new places with your family—you just need to be prepared. Toddler travel beds provide consistency and protected sleep space, resulting in a well-rested child and a smoother trip for everyone. 

For some parents, portable toddler travel beds are must-haves to provide young children with a secure place to sleep while on vacation. “Simpler is always better, especially when thinking of traveling with toddlers . So, when it comes to a toddler travel bed, you don't need all the bells and whistles,” says Anjuli Gans, MD, a pediatrician at the Karabots Pediatric Care Center in West Philadelphia. “There are a lot of fancy ones out there on the market, but your baby really just needs a safe and comfortable place to sleep ." 

We spent hours testing these products (20 total) in the lab and our homes by assembling and disassembling them—sometimes with one hand—and timing the whole process. We also studied the beds' features, how well they hold a toddler's weight, and how easy they are to clean. Unlike other inflatables, the Eltow toddler travel bed consists of an outer section with bumpers on two sides and a mattress that fits snugly inside the outer shell. It's not sitting directly on the floor but is at floor level.

We love that it took us just five minutes to set up and is lightweight and portable . It comes with a high-speed pump, two patches in case of punctures, and a travel bag for storage. And thanks to a vinyl layer that protects against punctures, it's well-equipped to withstand wear and tear. Plus, it comes with a bag, so it's super portable. Unfortunately, it doesn't come with a sheet, so you'll have to pack one in your luggage. 

One flaw is that the mattress has a plastic smell that sticks around for a few hours once the mattress is removed from its packaging. (It should go away if you allow the product to air out for a day or two before use.) Assembly is straightforward, but removing the pump nozzle without losing air can be difficult when done alone, so we recommend getting a partner to help you out.

Even though the bed is bulky, it comes with a large carry bag that you can wear as a backpack, freeing your hands for luggage or a kid. We also like that the electric pump comes with an adapter for your car, making it ideal for camping. It can be wiped down and the crib sheet can be tossed in the laundry for cleanup. The main reason this crib isn't our top pick is that it's much more expensive than most of the other products on this list, but it's a worthwhile investment if you have the room in your budget.

This crib can’t make traveling on a plane with a toddler less challenging, but it can simplify your life when you get to your destination. In terms of ease of use, this travel bed only took us five minutes to set up and didn't require too much prep work to understand how to put it together. The setup process isn't as straightforward as other travel beds we tested, but it's not difficult.

An access door makes it easier to get to your little one without leaning over the side. You can use the entrance to lay them on the padded, waterproof mattress inside the mesh enclosure or let them go in and out of the crib when they are awake. The mattress is easy enough to wipe, but the fabric around the top of the crib is so absorbent that it's tough to give it a good cleaning. You can also unzip the bed cover and throw it into the washer for a deep clean. This convenience does come at a higher price than a lot of competitors, however.

We like the travel crib's packaging, which comes with shoulder and backpack straps that make it easy to carry around in an airport. It is a tad heavy, however.

Our Testing Process and Experts

To find the best toddler travel beds, we tested 20 beds in the Parents Testing Lab and in our own homes. We first tried to assemble the travel beds—with one hand, if possible. After that, we noted whether we needed to use both hands or had to get another adult to help. We also timed just how long the setup took for each bed. We then tested how well the toddler travel beds hold a toddler's weight using a 25-to-30-pound sandbag.

Next, we looked at how hard it would be to clean messes on the beds, examining hard-to-reach areas and taking note of the material and what it felt like to wipe it. We tested whether we could use a standard crib sheet as well, and then we tried to disassemble the beds one-handed. After breaking them down, we considered how long it took us and how difficult it was to place the beds inside their carry bags, if bags were included. Finally, we lifted the carrying bags to assess the beds’ portability. 

In addition to lab and real-world testing, we spoke with medical experts to gather their input on how to choose a toddler travel bed. We spoke to the following experts:

• Lynelle Schneeberg , PsyD, a pediatric sleep psychologist and author

Factors to Consider in a Toddler Travel Bed

• Comfort: As you’ve probably realized when getting a kid to sleep at home, comfort is key. Comfort for some toddlers may mean a favorite blanket, while others require a crib. Parents should consider various must-haves to make traveling easier and smoother when trekking across the country—or a few hours away—with your little one.
• Safety: Dr. Gans recommends researching products on the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) website to determine their safety and ensure that they haven't been recalled. When purchasing a crib or bassinet, parents of babies should also practice the same safe sleeping rules they implement at home. "Every toddler travel bed has age and weight requirements, so I would definitely check those first and make sure it matches up (with your toddler's age and weight)," she explains. Then, stick to simple beds without all the added features. "The less they have, the better.” Once you've narrowed down your selection to simple beds, make sure there are no bumpers or parts that can potentially trap your baby, and check corner points and sharp corners. "Corner points are sometimes a place where kids can get clothing caught or get injured, so make sure it doesn't have sharp corners," explains Dr. Gans. "And remember that pillows and blankets are still recommended for toddlers age 2 and over."
• Ease of Use: If you need a toddler travel bed that is easy to carry, quick to assemble, and doesn't require much work, then ease of use and portability must be considered when selecting a toddler travel bed. Some toddler travel beds can be assembled using one hand and only take minutes to assemble. That is very helpful if you arrive at a destination with a sleeping or cranky tot . You may want to look for bags that allow hands-free carrying. Another consideration is whether the bed is easy to put in those bags so you don’t find yourself fighting to pack it back in when it’s time to go home. If you are in a situation where you don't have a toddler travel bed, don't worry. "If you are staying somewhere, and they allow you to request a crib, you can pull out the mattress and just lay it on the floor," Dr. Gans adds. "If it's in a safe place for your toddler, then it is perfectly fine. Make sure it is somewhere they can have adult supervision at all times and within eye view, because you may not be able to safetyproof rooms the way you can at home."

How can I keep my toddler in bed while traveling?

A pack-and-play or travel bed with inflatable bumpers (which are not recommended for babies, of course!) can help keep a toddler from rolling onto the floor. You can also bring along some of their favorite items from home to help them want to stay in bed in a strange new place.

"The best thing to do when traveling is to bring along items from the child's home bedroom," recommends Dr. Schneeberg. "Parents can bring along the child's favorite pillow, 'bedtime buddy' (security object), and favorite books, for example. If the child is used to a certain night light or a sound machine , these can be brought along as well."

Can my 2-year-old sleep in a travel cot?

Certain travel cots are appropriate for 2-year-olds, but young 2-year-olds who haven't yet transitioned to a toddler bed may be more comfortable and safer in more crib-like pack-and-plays or travel beds with safety rails.

Can I put my 3-year-old in a toddler cot?

What to consider

A cotton bag will be fine for indoor sleepovers. But for camping, a bag with more warmth and some moisture resistance is better.

Sleeping bags can be either rectangular or mummy-shaped. A mummy bag may be slightly warmer and more compact.

If you’re not lugging anything that far, the packed size and weight of a sleeping bag may not matter. But if you are, lighter is better.

We’ve found that the stuff sack’s design can make a big difference in how easy it is for a younger kid to use their bag solo.

The REI Kindercone 25 is a spacious mummy bag that’s warm enough for most three-season camping trips. It’s also plush enough for the hard floor of a school gym. And it’s tough enough that parents need not fret if it occasionally morphs into a fort wall or becomes a vehicle for sliding down stairs. Parent and kid testers both particularly appreciated the bag’s built-in stuff sack, which is easy to use and impossible to lose.

The REI Co-op Kindercamp 40 has similar materials (polyester fill and a polyester shell) to the Kindercone 25, but this bag is rectangular instead of mummy-shaped. That means the Kindercamp 40 doesn’t have the hooded top and tapered foot that give the Kindercone 25 a cozy, cocoon-like shape. And it’s not as warm: The Kindercamp 40’s temperature rating is just 40 °F, compared with our top pick’s 25 °F. The Kindercamp 40 also doesn’t have the fully attached stuff sack that we love on the Kindercone 25; instead, its sack is attached with a small tether. But due to its rectangular shape, the Kindercamp 40 will feel roomier than the Kindercone 25, and it can double as a comforter when unzipped.

If your normal camping weather involves nighttime lows in the 30s or below, the best bet for your kid will be the Big Agnes Little Red or the larger Wolverine . Compared with our other picks, these mummy bags are warmer (rated to 20 ˚F). And like most bags from Big Agnes, they both have a built-in sleeping-pad sleeve, so your little camper will stay put on their pad—and thus remain toastier—throughout the night. You do have to buy a pad separately, but you may be able to use one you already have (most 20-inch-wide pads will fit). The Big Agnes bags pack up smaller than most, but they’re also more expensive, even before you factor in the cost of a sleeping pad.

We also reached out to Helen Olsson , whose guidebook The Down and Dirty Guide to Camping With Kids provides a fun and practical intro for parents looking to make a smooth transition into family car camping.

Is a kid-size sleeping bag even necessary? Many people have an extra adult bag or two in the attic or garage, so is one of those just as good?

“In a perfect world, people who have small kids should have small sleeping bags,” camping expert Helen Olsson told us. “That air pocket around your body inside the sleeping bag is what keeps you warm. Put a little kid in a big, adult-size bag and they’re going to get cold.”

That said, kids can grow out of small bags quickly, and many kids sleep warm and end up shedding their bag in seemingly any weather. Olsson’s own kids started using hand-me-down adult bags when they were about 6 and 7, but they tended to sleep hot, she said. If you have older adult sleeping bags that are in good shape, sure, try them out before buying something new (if they need a wash, we have advice on that ). You can shrink that air pocket yourself by cinching the bottom of the bag (beneath your kid’s feet) with the drawstring on a stuff sack or a jumbo-size elastic band.

The kid-size bags in this guide are intended for children who are about 2 to 12 years old. However, depending on the size of your kid, some bags may fit for a significantly longer time. By the early tween years, it’s generally more practical to just buy your kid an adult-size sleeping bag, which they’ll have for years to come; we have recommendations in our guide to the best sleeping bags .

Pretty much any sleeping bag will be fine for a living-room slumber party. But if you want a kids bag that’ll do double duty for camping trips and outdoor adventures, you’ll want one that’s built to ward off cold and damp climates, and that’s easy for a kid to stuff and unstuff on their own. In evaluating sleeping bags made for kids, we considered:

Bag shape: We tested both mummy-style and rectangular bags. Form-fitting mummy bags tend to provide more warmth with less mass, while rectangular bags may feel roomier and have the advantage of unzipping to serve as a blanket.

Weight and heft: We knew the ideal bag would be lightweight and portable enough that even toddlers could lug it around by themselves. All of the bags we seriously considered weigh less than 3½ pounds and come with their own carrying sack. Depending on your destination, the overall size of a stuffed sleeping bag may also be important.

Materials and temperature ratings: We wanted a bag that would be warm enough for three-season camping. Many inexpensive sleeping bags are rated between 40 ˚F and 55 ˚F, which means they may leave your kid shivering on a spring or fall trip. Most cheaper bags are also made of cotton, which doesn’t do much to repel moisture, be it from early-morning dew or a leaky water bottle. Unlike synthetic materials, cotton doesn’t insulate when it’s wet. We wanted a warm bag that wouldn’t get soggy in a spill. So we mostly looked at bags that are at least partly made from synthetic materials.

Standout features: We found that some bags had notably easy-to-use stuff sacks. We also paid attention to zipper quality and the usefulness of cinches around the head and shoulders.

Usable life: Kids grow fast. We favored bags that seemed the most likely to fit a kid comfortably for many years, while holding up to lots of use.

Over the past seven years, we’ve brought over a dozen different kids sleeping bags on camping trips, as well as to sleepovers and to sleepaway camp. Each time, we took note of how easy it was to stuff and unstuff and to zip and unzip a bag, and we noted which bags kids gravitated toward when they were presented with multiple options.

The mummy-shaped REI Co-op Kindercone 25 offers a lot of great features for a reasonable price. And it fits everyone from toddlers to small teens, so the typical kid can curl up comfortably inside it throughout childhood.

It’s lofty—and warm. The Kindercone 25 has a fluffier feel than similar kids bags. And we’ve found that it does keep kids comfy when they’re camping in cool weather, as its 25 ˚F temperature rating promises. The sleeping bag’s stuff sack is built into the bottom of the bag, and the cinch that secures the sack closed doubles as a cinch to shorten the bag, creating a smaller air bubble that traps heat and preserves warmth for smaller kids.

It’s protective and durable. The Kindercone 25’s polyester shell is tough, and it’s treated to repel moisture. Synthetic polyester fill insulates even when it’s damp. After many seasons of using this bag, we’ve encountered no tears or zipper issues.

It has a long usable life. This is a bag you could buy for a 1-year-old and expect that they’ll still be using it in their late elementary school years. Using the cinch, we put kids as young as 13 months in this bag. Without the cinch, the typical fifth-grader will still fit comfortably inside. And even small adults can squeeze into this bag if they have to: A 5-foot-5 mom on our Pacific Coast camping trip did just that when her 2-year-old son insisted on getting into his parents’ double bag in the middle of the night.

It has the best stuff sack. Even if you never actually use the cinch feature, the attached sack is a hit. As five families were packing up after a group car-camping trip to Joshua Tree National Park, there was a fair amount of confusion as to which camp chair, sleeping pad, and sleeping bag matched which carry bag. The Kindercone 25’s attached stuff sack was a top draw for obvious reasons: You don’t have to worry about misplacing it, and kids have one less excuse to avoid packing up their own bag.

REI has been making the Kindercone 25 since at least 2008, and we’ve now tested three generations of this bag. The colors and patterns change every year or two, and we’ve seen small design improvements over time. For example, the current Kindercone bag has a fabric strip at one end and a loop at the other; both are handy for hanging the bag to air-dry and for carrying it.

REI has a one-year, no-questions-asked return policy , but it’s for REI members only. The return window for non-members is 90 days.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The Kindercone 25 is marketed for backpacking. Reviewers complain, however, that the bag is bulky for backpacking and is more appropriate for car camping and sleepovers, and we agree. If your kid is going backpacking, they’ll probably want a lighter, more compact bag, like one of the bags from Big Agnes (our two upgrade picks).

If your family avoids camping in colder weather, or you want a colorful, durable sleeping bag primarily for sleepovers or sleepaway camp, consider the REI Co-op Kindercamp 40 . This bag has a similar price and feel to our top pick, the Kindercone 25 , and it also uses polyester in its shell and fill. The Kindercamp 40 is not quite as warm, but that may not matter to you. And some kids may simply prefer the roomier feel of a rectangular bag.

It can unzip into a blanket. Like many—but not all—rectangular sleeping bags, the Kindercamp 40 easily unzips into a flat rectangle. So a kid could use it as a bedspread, on a bunk or twin bed, and then zip it back into a bag for added warmth when needed.

But it’s not as warm overall. With a 40 ˚F temperature rating, the Kindercamp 40 won’t keep your kid as warm as any of our other picks will. It also doesn’t have a hood, which the Kindercone 25 and many other bags do have. The Kindercamp 40 does have a cinch around the top, though, so a kid can cocoon inside if desired.

The stuff sack is tethered to the bag, but it can rip off. The Kindercamp 40’s shape prevents it from being designed with the fully attached sack that makes the Kindercone 25 so easy to stuff back into its carry bag. Instead, the Kindercamp 40’s stuff sack is attached to the bag with a small tether. This is still convenient and will prevent the sack from getting lost—that is, unless it’s somehow ripped off, which actually happened when we sent this bag to sleepaway camp with one particularly high-energy 8-year-old tester.

The Kindercamp 40 is also covered under REI’s warranty .

If your family does a lot of cold-weather camping, it could be worth it to get one of these Big Agnes bags for your kid. They both stand out for their built-in sleeping-pad sleeves, which will keep your kid on the pad—and thus warmer and more comfortable—all night long.

Big Agnes makes kid bags in three sizes , all rated to 20 ˚F. The Little Red is made for kids up to 4-foot-5. The nearly identical Wolverine is for kids up to about 4-foot-8 (though, as we found with the REI Co-op Kindercone 25 , this bag can fit kids a bit taller than that). And the adjustable Torchlight is intended for those up to 5-foot-4.

If we were buying a Big Agnes bag for a 2- or 3-year-old, we’d get the Little Red, assuming the kid would get at least three years of use out of it. For any child older than that, we’d likely go straight to the Wolverine (unless there’s a younger sibling who will also need a little sleeping bag in the future, in which case it may be more practical to get a Little Red for a kindergarten-age kid). A Boulder, Colorado, dad we know bought a Big Agnes bag for his son when he was just 1. “In tents, in sub-freezing temps, he’s cozy and never wakes up,” the dad wrote to us, praising the sleeping bag’s stay-put pad system.

They create a warmer setup. Big Agnes built its reputation on high-quality sleeping bags with built-in sleeping-pad sleeves that—when stuffed with a sleeping pad you buy separately—eliminate the need for insulation in the bottom of the bag.

At first, we thought the system seemed a bit much for little kids. But a couple of mid-30s February nights in Joshua Tree convinced us of the Little Red ’s superiority for cold-weather camping. At the time, we were putting our 5-year-old’s sleeping bag on an old Therm-a-Rest sleeping pad left over from our backpacking days. He’d typically roll off of it in the middle of the night—not such a big deal when it’s not too cold out. But on truly chilly nights, it was nice to know that his insulating pad was going to securely stay under his little, 37-pound body, significantly reducing the chance he’d wake up wedged between air mattresses—cold, confused, and begging to climb into bed with Mom and Dad. The Big Agnes system solved a problem that had never occurred to us needed solving.

But it may require purchasing a new sleeping pad as well. Any 20-inch-wide camping pad that’s less than about 4¼ inches thick will slot into the Big Agnes bags. Therm-a-Rest’s Z Lite Sol , the budget pick in our guide to the best sleeping pads , will fit in its regular or small version, and it’s a great choice for kids since it’s close to indestructible. Nemo Equipment makes a short version of its Switchback pad, and that’s another option, as is this self-inflating kid-size pad from REI .

It’s lighter and packs down smaller. All of the Big Agnes kids bags have a polyester ripstop shell with water-repellent coating, and they use a proprietary synthetic fill. They pack down smaller than the REI bags do, making them a good option for first backpacking trips. The Wolverine bag weighs 2 pounds 4 ounces; that’s notably lighter than the similarly sized Kindercone 25, which weighs 3 pound 3 ounces.

It’s more expensive, though. Some parents may choose to reserve pricey gear like this for camping only, and they instead buy a cheaper bag for sleepovers, fort-building, and the like. And there’s no doubt that your kid risks looking like a pint-size gear geek if she packs two tiny stuff sacks (one for the sleeping bag, one for the pad) for a birthday sleepover where everyone else is cuddling up with Elsa and Anna sleeping bags. Then again, she may be the only one to get a good night’s rest.

The Big Agnes bags have a discretionary warranty .

If you want a high-quality flannel-lined bag. L.L.Bean’s Kids’ Flannel Lined Camp Sleeping Bag is a great choice. This cozy bag has strong reviews and a throwback aesthetic that could feel just right for car camping or summer camp. Like many rectangular bags, it can fully unzip and lie flat like a comforter. This bag is relatively heavy, bulky, and expensive, however, and it’s rated to 40 ˚F, so it’s not as appropriate for cold nights as some of our picks. The Kids’ L.L.Bean Cotton-Blend Camp Sleeping Bag is similar, but it has a regular cotton lining instead of flannel.

If you want something cute for little-kid sleepovers. We recommend the Pottery Barn Kids Shaggy Head Bear Sleeping Bag in our guide to the best gifts for 2-year-olds . This snuggly cotton bag is a fun choice for indoor slumber parties. But it’s much bulkier and heavier than the picks in this guide, and it won’t provide as much warmth or any moisture protection for camping.

If you’re not sure whether your kid is too big for a kid-size bag. We’d err on the side of getting an adult-size sleeping bag that will see more years of use. The top pick in our overall guide to the best sleeping bags is the affordable REI Co-op Siesta Hooded 20 , a synthetic bag that’s ideal for car camping.

Fighting the cold: Though a sleeping bag with a lower temperature rating should keep a kid warmer, the surface the bag is placed on also matters. When temperatures are mild, plenty of kids are just fine slapping their bags directly on the ground (did the backyard campouts of a few decades ago happen any other way?). But on cold nights, the more insulation there is between a little body and the heat-sucking earth, the better. A foam sleeping pad or insulated air mattress made for camping is probably best, but an exercise mat, cheap piece of foam, or cotton futon could work too. Even a folded blanket placed under a pint-size sleeping bag will make a difference in fighting off the chill.

In cold weather, put your kid to bed in warm socks and jammies and a hat (maybe one that snaps under the chin so it stays put). Bring a hot-water bottle from home, or make your own at the campsite by filling an actual water bottle with hot water. Stick it inside a thick sock, and then stuff it in the bag with your chilly child. Just make sure the bottle is protected enough that it doesn’t risk scalding your kid’s skin. Hot cocoa before bed never hurts, either.

Cleaning: Avoid the wear and tear of machine-washing when a good spot-cleaning will do. Following our particularly sticky and dusty trip to Joshua Tree, we slung bags over the clothesline and simply wiped them down with a wet cloth. (No, our kid did not brush his teeth before bed, and evidence suggests he may have hit the sack with marshmallows still gripped in his grimy fists.) Most companies recommend that bags be washed in the bathtub or in a front-load washer, using cold water and gentle soaps (REI carries these ). Storage: It’s better to store a sleeping bag out of its stuff sack, though who has the room to do that? Of the bags we looked at, only the Big Agnes bags and the REI Co-op Down Time come with two storage bags—a compression sack (for on the trail) and a larger, looser mesh bag (for long-term storage). As with any camping gear, avoid mildew by ensuring a sleeping bag is completely dry before returning it to its bag. Big Agnes’s FAQ includes a discussion of optimum storage .

We used to list the REI Co-op Down Time 25   in this guide as a good option for camping or backpacking, but as of early 2024 it’s been discontinued. This mummy-shaped bag is rated 25 ˚F and packs down to a satisfyingly compact size in its included nylon stuff sack (it also comes with a bigger mesh bag for storage). The one we tested held up well over three years of camping trips and sleepovers.

We tested the Kelty Kids Mistral 30 , a relatively affordable mummy-style bag. The quality seemed good, but this bag was notably less lofty than the Kindercone 25 , and it wasn’t a favorite of our kid testers. Kelty also now makes the Mistral 20 , but we have not tested it.

In 2023 we ordered a Soulout sleeping bag from Amazon, after seeing it specifically recommended on the packing list for a White Mountains hiking camp. It comes in lots of colors and would be fine for car camping, but it’s heavier than our picks, and the fabrics and zippers don’t feel as soft or durable.

We also recently tried out the Teton Sports Li’l Bridger , a hefty canvas sleeping bag with an old-school camp look. At 4½ pounds, this bag is heavier and bulkier than any other one we’ve tested, and we think that makes it less convenient. Also, the “flannel” lining doesn’t really feel like flannel. But if you like the look and don’t mind the bulk, it’s rated down to 0 ˚F. And, like the Kindercamp 40 , it fully unzips to double as a blanket.

We looked at the Teton Sports Celsius Junior 20 ˚. This bag is less expensive than our picks, and it could be a fine option if you want a warm, moisture-resistant bag that costs less. But the materials feel cheaper. And unlike many rectangular bags, it doesn’t fully unzip, so it can’t be used as a blanket.

We tested a previous generation of L.L.Bean’s Adventure Sleeping Bag for kids, and we concluded that the Kindercone 25 was a better value. The L.L.Bean bag has been redesigned , and it has some nice features. We haven’t tested the new version, but overall, L.L.Bean’s kids sleeping bags remain more expensive than REI’s.

To be fair, however, it was a bit cumbersome gate-checking a double stroller. You have to, not only detach the car seats, but also remove a seat and fold the stroller. All the while somehow holding or containing two kids.

After our travels in Europe and taking the train from Amsterdam to Paris, I realized a double stroller was not conducive to travel. I noticed European parents using small travel strollers – some of which folded compactly and could fit in the overhead rack. That’s the exact moment that I became obsessed with the GB Pockit Stroller . I absolutely love how I can roll the stroller on the plane with the baby in tow. Once the baby is settled, I simply fold it up and place it overhead.

There are several good options for compact travel strollers and many of those can fit overhead on a plane. Depending on the climate you’re traveling to, you may want to consider getting a mosquito net cover , rain cover , and/or fan for the stroller. Another great stroller accessory when carrying a lot of things is a stroller organizer . Being able to keep your hands as free as possible when traveling with kids makes the journey a lot easier and less stressful.

As my boys got older, they became more resistant to using a stroller. That’s when our handy beach wagon came to the rescue. It was perfect for fitting both kids or their luggage. Our personal rules to the kids were “either pull the wagon or ride in it.”

If you prefer a wagon specifically designed for kids, there are several options including Wonderfold , Evenflo , and Gladly Family . These wagons come with seat belts and seats specifically designed for kiddos.

Lightweight or Travel Car Seat

Another toddler travel essential that I stressed about when first traveling with my twins was car seats. I couldn’t imagine carrying two standard-sized car seats along with all of the other kid travel needs. Luckily, some genius out there with kids designed lightweight and portable travel car seats for parents on the go.

We started with the Cosco Car Seats which are relatively lightweight at about 12 pounds. We didn’t have any issues with it. However, when we discovered the WAYB Pico was foldable, only 8 pounds, and could be used with kids up to 50 lbs (we were nearing the weight limit of our Cosco Car Seats), we knew it was time to switch.

It’s extremely easy to travel with the WAYB Pico Car Seat. I personally love how spacious the car seat bag is. It’s roomy enough to fit additional items, like life jackets.

Ride Safer Travel Vest

Another great option is the Ride Safe Travel Vest for car travel only. It is available in three sizes and fits kids from 22 to 110 pounds. The best part is that the travel vest only weighs a bit over two pounds.

CARES Kid’s Fly Safe Harness

Due to the amount of stuff you have to bring, traveling with twin babies and toddlers is no easy feat. Once I started buying my kiddos their own seats on the plane, I was happy to find the CARES Kid’s Fly Safe Harness to use on the plane instead of a car seat. It quickly became one of our toddler travel essentials.

This harness is designed for kids that weigh 22–44 pounds and is very compact. So compact, that each boy would carry theirs in their backpack! Plus, the setup was super easy and only took a minute or so.

Toddler Luggage and Travel Backpack Essentials

As your little one gets older, they’re going to want more independence. A great way to satiate that need is to add toddler luggage and/or a toddler backpack to your toddler travel checklist. Keep reading for my favorites.

Toddler Luggage

At two years old, my boys were over the moon when they got their own toddler-sized luggage . We found it was best to give them two-wheel luggage since it seemed easier for them to know which direction to roll it. Initially, they carried just lightly packed luggage or backpacks to limit the weight. As they got older, they started to carry both, which has made traveling with kids so much easier.

Toddler Travel Backpack and Harness Backpack with Leash

Once your little one gets old enough and is a relatively good walker, a toddler travel backpack is a must-have. These backpacks can be relatively light and easy for your little one to carry. As they grow, they can begin to carry some of their needs, like entertainment, snacks, and/or diapers.

If you have a kid who likes to wander or have multiples (like myself), consider investing in a harness backpack with a leash .

Toddler Luggage Accessories Checklist

Packing for yourself can be a challenge. Throw in packing for a toddler, and you may end up with more things than you can physically carry. Luggage straps, compression packing cubes, and vacuum storage bags have been the key for my family to travel as lightly as possible and have even allowed us to fly with only carry-ons.

Luggage Strap

Believe it or not, I have traveled with my twin toddlers solo several times. One of the biggest hurdles I initially faced was how to carry everything by myself. A luggage strap is a quick and effective solution. Simply attach your kids’ luggage to yours, and pull all of it together.

Cincha Travel Belt

The Cincha Travel Belt is a great way to ensure that any bag set on the handles of your luggage stays put. The worst thing is walking through the airport and having your bag slip or fall off the handles. You won’t have to worry about that with this travel belt.

It especially comes in handy as a toddler travel essential, since you can easily attach the diaper bag or even a car seat bag onto the handles of your luggage. Honestly, it’s been a game-changer! The fewer things I have to carry in my hand or back, the better.

Toddler Travel Essential: Feeding Checklist

Feeding toddlers can be a challenge all on its own. Add in travel and an airport full of germs, and no wonder people are intimidated by traveling with their kids. This “feeding toddlers while traveling” checklist will make the feeding on-the-go process easier and less of a headache.

Snack Catcher OR Snack Spinner

If your toddlers are anything like my twins, snacks are a travel must-have . Unfortunately, that normally equates to a mess. That’s where the snack catcher and snack spinner come in handy.

The snack catcher is a great option if you’re packing a single snack. It’s very small and can easily fit into your toddler’s backpack. On the other hand, the snack spinner is a travel essential for those toddlers who require a variety of snacks. They come with five snack compartments and an interactive button. It’s a bit larger, around 6.5 inches, so it may or may not fit in your toddler’s backpack, depending on its size.

Of course, if you have a snack catcher or spinner, you must have snacks. Honestly, they count as a form of entertainment. Below are some of my kids’ favorite travel snacks:

• Applesauce or other pouches
• Graham crackers
• Veggie straws
• Dried fruit
• Cheese crackers

Spill-proof Water Bottle

A spill-proof water bottle is hands-down one of the most important toddler travel essentials since, for some unknown reason, toddlers are always thirsty. I recommend getting a bottle that can easily fit in your toddler’s backpack because they seem to be the easiest things to lose and/or forget when traveling.

Additionally, don’t fret about carrying your own drink pass airport security in a kid’s water bottle. It’s allowed, but it has to be screened . This simply means the officer will ask you to remove the top of the water bottle so they can place a paper above the opening. This ensures there are no foreign or illegal substances.

Personally, I think it’s worth it!

Easy Clean Bibs

Toddlers are notorious for smearing food all over the table and themselves while they eat. Using a long-sleeved, easy-to-clean, waterproof bib will minimize the amount of clothing you have to change after mealtime. You’ll love them so much that they’ll become a part of your everyday diaper bag essentials.

Foldable Placemats

As toddlers, my boys LOVED to eat. I couldn’t expect us to go anywhere to eat without them wanting to share in the meal. These foldable placemats ensured my boys had something clean to eat on, that they couldn’t pick up and throw on the floor. They became so handy that they quickly became a diaper bag essential, even when we weren’t traveling. Plus, they are simple to clean. (I would use bottle and pacifier wipes. )

Portable High Chair

The portable high chair is another toddler travel essential that quickly became an everyday diaper bag essential. How many times have you been out to a restaurant and either there wasn’t a high chair available (especially with twins, this happens more than you would think) or the high chair was dirty?

This is also important when trying to feed your kiddo at a vacation rental or a family member’s house. Where does your kid sit? Portable high chairs ensure you have a clean place for your little one to safely sit around the table. The high chairs that we used easily adapted to almost any type of chair and folded small enough to fit two inside of our diaper bag.

Toddler Utensils

Toddler utensils are more of perk than a toddler traveling essential. Can your toddler use regular or plastic silverware? Most likely – yes. But since toddler utensils are made for your little one’s little hands, and help them master their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, why not add them to your toddler packing list?

As a bonus, they can easily fit in your diaper bag.

Toddler Travel Checklists: Diapering Essentials

On the first few flights with my twins, at least one of them had a blowout. If there’s one area I want to be over-prepared for when traveling with kids, it’s diapering essentials.

Changing Pad Liner

Believe it or not, some airplanes don’t have changing tables. Most have at least one bathroom with a changing table, but when there’s an emergency (because toddlers love to wait until the last minute to tell you they have to go), how would you know which one to go to?

A changing pad liner ensures you have a clean and ample space to change your toddler while traveling. It also has space for you to store diapers, wipes, and other diapering essentials. Sometimes I would bring a dog training pad so that I wouldn’t have to worry about soiling my liner. I could easily wrap all the soiled items in it and dispose.

Toddler Travel Potty

Once my twins started potty training, I wanted to ensure they were comfortable going to the potty while traveling. Therefore, I purchased a toddler travel potty before our travels so they could get comfortable using it (hopefully eliminating the possibility of them not wanting to use it while traveling).

For reference, there are (3) different toddler travel potty options : 1) Toddler travel potty that includes a bowl 2) Toddler travel potty that does NOT include a bowl 3) Toddler potty seat

There is no wrong or right option – just whatever works best for you and your toddler. We personally liked the style that included the bowl.

Adding a wet bag to your toddler travel checklist will ensure you have a place to store any potentially soiled clothing. The last thing you want to do is put soiled clothes into your clean diaper bag!

Diapers, Training Pants, and Wipes

I’d be remiss if I didn’t add the basic necessities when it comes to diapering a toddler.

A quick suggestion to the potty training mama- don’t be afraid to use training pants while traveling, even for the kiddos who are pretty advanced. It takes the pressure off of everyone. I can’t tell you how many times my kids “suddenly” had to go potty during landing.

Toddler Plane Sleep Essentials

The best thing that could happen when flying with kids is they fall asleep during the flight. Making your toddler as comfortable as possible will help them sleep on the plane , especially on long-haul flights.

JetKids BedBox or Inflatable Travel Bed

One item that’s guaranteed to make my toddler travel checklist when I want my kiddos to sleep on the plane is a comfortable toddler travel bed .

We love the JetKids BedBox . It turns their seat into a lay-flat bed. Each time we use it, it basically guarantees they’ll get comfy enough to drift asleep. Plus, the compartment is large enough to use as a carry-on to fit your kiddo’s clothing and belongings. Another more affordable, option is the inflatable travel bed , which wedges between your child’s seat and the seat in front of them. This way, they can stretch their legs out and fall asleep.

Planes are notorious for being cold. Be sure your toddler is as comfy as possible by adding a blanket or jacket to the travel packing list. A blanket that folds into the bag easily fits in most toddler backpacks and attaches to luggage.

Also consider adding a hat to your toddler travel checklist, especially if your kid tends to get cold easily. This could even become a diaper bag essential, as many restaurants and stores tend to be chilly.

Portable Sound Machine

Some children have a hard time falling asleep without a sound machine. If this is your kid, be sure to add a portable sound machine to your toddler travel packing list. It’s lightweight and small enough to easily fit in your diaper bag.

Toddler Travel Essential: Entertainment

When preparing for a flight, it’s common to bring some type of entertainment to pass the time in the air. Toddlers aren’t any different.

Most toddlers need multiple forms of entertainment on their travel checklist. I recommended bringing at least one new or rarely used toy/entertainment so that they are excited about playing with it, and hopefully play with it longer.

Below are some of our favorite toddler entertainment travel essentials:

• Magnetic Tiles

Extra Set of Clothing

An extra set of clothing is a must for both toddlers and babies, especially when checking luggage. Just remember when you’re on the plane and somehow you and/or your little one get dirty (it happens more than you can imagine), you only have what’s in your diaper bag.

Teething Toys

If your toddler is teething, it’s important to have teething toys on the travel checklist. While on the plane, your little one’s ears may pop, which may magnify their gum irritation. The sucking and chewing motion will help minimize the irritability of both the gums and ears.

Hand Sanitizer and Disinfectant Wipes

It seems as if one of toddlers’ favorite activities is to drop something on the floor and put said item in their mouth. It’s one thing when they do it at home, but it’s an entirely different game when done at the germy airport. Keeping hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes in your diaper bag will allow your baby to play happily while giving you peace of mind.

Toddler Travel Essentials: Required Documentation

What a bummer would it be to pack all of your toddler travel essentials, only to forget the correct documentation?

• Copy of birth certificate OR 
• Letter from the hospital indicating age
• A signed and notarized letter stating permission for travel to X destination

The toddler travel essentials listed below can vary depending on the age of your toddler, their propensity to get dirty or soil their clothes, and the type of destination you’re traveling to. For example, beach vacations require their own set of travel essentials.

Toddler Travel Packing List: Clothing

These are the general packing guidelines that I use when traveling with my kids. If possible, stay at a vacation rental or hotel with a washing machine. Or come prepared with sink laundry detergent .

• Underwear: 1 per day, plus 2 additional
• 1 outfit per child, per day
• 1+ additional outfits per child (especially more tops if your toddler drools a lot)
• Socks: 1 pair per day, plus 1 additional pair because socks disappear
• Shoes: 1-2 pairs, depending on activities
• Pajamas: 1 per every 2 days (you may need to increase if the toddler soaks through overnight training pants)
• Weather-specific clothes: i.e. coats, hats, or beach clothing

Toddler Travel Packing List: Toiletries

Packing as light as possible is key for traveling with kids. It’s recommended to get travel-size toiletries or use leak-proof pouches or travel containers .

• Tear-free bath soap and shampoo
• Baby lotion
• Hairbrush/supplies (headbands/hair barrettes/products)
• First aid kit , including Infant medicine (ibuprofen or acetaminophen), bandaids, thermometer, etc.
• Sink laundry detergent
• Baby Sunscreen
• Natural mosquito repellent 
• Inflatable travel bath  
• Kid flossers

Toddler Travel Checklist: Sleeping Essentials

It can be a challenge for some people to fall asleep in a new place, and toddlers aren’t any different. Therefore, recreating their home environment as closely as possible increases the chances of your little one sleeping through the night. Be sure to add these toddler travel sleeping essentials to your checklist!

Pack and Play , Portable Baby Travel Crib , or Baby Travel Tent

There are a variety of toddler travel bed options . There is no right or wrong option, it’s more what works best for your family’s needs and price point. Whichever one you decide to go with, try it out at home for a few nights just to make sure your little one enjoys sleeping in it.

Portable Black-out Curtains

In order to get some children to sleep, the room needs to be pitch black. If this is your toddler, be sure to add portable black-out curtains to the essential packing list. They are relatively small to carry and the setup is pretty simple since the attached suction cups stick to the window. It’s worth bringing them if a good night’s sleep is on the line.

Portable White Noise Machine

Similar to black-out curtains, some kids have a hard time falling asleep without a white noise machine. If this is your toddler, a portable white noise machine is indeed a travel essential. This one is compact and can attach to most things. It offers three different sounds to help your little one drown out any disruption and drift off to sleep.

Smartphone Baby Monitor  

If you’re planning to stay in a vacation rental or somewhere where your toddler will be sleeping in a different room, you may want to add a smartphone baby monitor to your packing list. The camera itself is relatively small and you use your phone as the monitor. It’s a great way to check in on your toddler without having to physically go into the room or take up a lot of space in your luggage.

Toddler Travel Essentials: Packing Light

Packing light is key when traveling with kids, especially if you’re like me and get overwhelmed when you have a lot to carry. Now you may be saying, “traveling with toddlers and packing light, that’s an oxymoron!”

Yes and no.

Yes, toddlers have more things to bring than the average person. But no, it doesn’t have to mean you overpack or bring more than you can carry. Try the tips below out for size!

Compression Packing Cubes

Compression packing cubes , which are different from regular packing cubes, help clear out extra air – allowing you to pack more in a small space. In fact, when using compression cubes, we’re able to pack all of the boys’ belongings either in their toddler luggage or JetKids BedBox .

Vacuum Storage Bags

Another great option for fitting your toddler’s travel essentials into a carry-on or toddler luggage is vacuum storage bags . They normally come in two options: foldable and vacuum. I personally like the vacuum storage version since they get the most air out. They’re also the easiest to use, in my opinion. Be aware that you have to carry the manual pump to get the air out of the bag while traveling. Luckily, the pump doesn’t take up much space.

Other Toddler Travel Essentials

Babyproofing.

If you know your toddler will be spending a significant amount of time at your vacation rental, you may want to add babyproofing items like outlet covers or corner protectors to your packing list. This isn’t necessarily a travel essential, but they’re nice to have to keep your toddler safe while exploring the new space.

Toddler Travel Checklist Essentials

Having a detailed toddler travel packing list can give you the confidence you need to travel with your little one with ease. It gives you a great feeling of preparedness and leaves you ready to conquer whatever may come.

In addition to having a checklist of items you need to pack, I would recommend also having a checklist that mentally walks you through each step of the flying with kids process . Think about how you can most effectively get the kids and luggage to the check-in counter. What if there’s a delay? Is there any special toy or treat you can use to pass the time? This gives you a plan and helps you feel prepared for your trip.

Of course, these are lists you can create yourself. But if you’re a parent, I’m sure your time is limited. We almost gave up on traveling. No kidding. Flying with a baby and toddler is our worst kind of nightmare, like, if we lived in a Harry Potter world, our ‘boggart’ would literally take the form of our two kids in an airplane.

Are airplane toddler beds allowed on flights?

It depends on which airline you’re flying, as the rules differ. Currently, leg rests are banned on Emirates, Qantas, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Thai Airways. Be sure to check with your airline before bringing one onboard.

Is an inflatable airplane bed easy to set up?

Generally speaking – yes. Cheaper inflatable leg rests don’t tend to come with a pump, meaning that you’ll have to call upon the husband to exercise the air capacity in his lungs.

How do you carry them onboard?

5. Toddler Carrier or Sling

Truth be told, we wouldn’t know where we would be without our Tula toddler carrier . Crying in the gutter in a foreign country somewhere. Actually, no. Probably at home  not travelling. Ever.

Carriers are a godsend on airplanes when you need to restrain an overtired toddler throwing an epic tantrum. They’re a godsend when your baby doesn’t take to the bassinet. They’re a godsend to keep little ones calm during take-off and landing (provided the airline allows it).

We’ve only ever owned Tulas because of their front-and-back carrying abilities, plus, the toddler size holds up to 27 kg (60 lbs) weight. We still carry our 4-year old in it when we need to scurry along somewhere.

We’ve tried a bunch of neck pillows – cute ones, bean ones, suspended ones (don’t ask) – you name it, we’ve had ’em. Bottom line – our kids end up throwing them on the floor.

Traveling with a toddler is not the easiest of feats, but it can be made a lot easier by bringing a few toddler travel essentials. These are items that make traveling with a toddler go much more smoothly for everyone in your travel group.

On our many trips with our toddlers, we’ve come to learn that there are some items that we just can’t do without when traveling with young kids. And others that we can ditch to save the luggage space…

In this article, we’ve included detailed descriptions of the toddler travel essentials that you won’t want to forget on your trip. We’ve also provided a toddler travel packing list to make packing for your child that much easier! Read on for everything you need to bring for a successful trip with a toddler.

Toddler Travel Essentials

Getting around

These are a few essential items that make getting around with your toddler a lot easier during travel.

• Toddler carrier

When traveling with a toddler, a carrier is at the top of my list of toddler travel essentials. 

Toddler carriers can make life so much easier when traveling. They allow you to easily take your child places that are less stroller friendly and provide a perfect place for nursing (if your child is breastfeeding) and napping on the go. They’re also great for containing toddlers in places that might not be safe for them to roam free (say at the top of a bell tower or the edge of the grand canyon).

We’ve carried our toddlers in carriers all over the world and find it to be one of the easiest ways to travel with a toddler.

A stroller may or may not be a necessity for your trip, depending on what kind of trip you’re taking. We’ve taken trips with just a toddler carrier and others with both a carrier and a stroller (I always bring a carrier, even if I’m bringing a stroller). 

Strollers can be very useful for navigating the airport with a toddler and for trips where you’ll be visiting stroller-accessible locations. They’re nice to have along to give you a break from having to carry your child all the time (or chase them down constantly).

Travel car seat

A car seat is typically going to be one of your toddler travel essentials, barring a few locations where you can get by just using public transportation. But if you’re planning on getting around by car, you’ll want a car seat to keep your little one safe. Strapped in their car seat is also the safest way for toddlers to fly on a plane. 

Younger toddlers might still fit within the safety requirements for an infant car seat, which are great for travel. Infant car seats are lightweight and easy to transport. 

If your child has outgrown their infant seat, it’s worth it to invest in a lightweight travel car seat. Trust me, after you’ve spent your whole trip hauling that thing around you’ll be glad to have left your heavy, bulky regular seat at home. Car seat bag

If you’re bringing a car seat, you’ll want to bring a car seat travel bag. These bags make transporting your car seat much easier and more manageable.

Food/Snacks

These food relate toddler travel essentials will make mealtimes and snacks with your toddler go a lot more smoothly while on your trip. 

A bib is a helpful way to keep your child cleaner while eating. As an added bonus, it keeps their clothes clean as well, which makes it more likely that you can pack light and reuse outfits. 

These waterproof bibs are lightweight and pack down to practically nothing. We also love these silicone bibs which take a bit more space but are easier to clean and dry more quickly.

Snack catcher 

Snacks are a great way to entertain a toddler while traveling. And a snack catcher allows them to feed themselves independently without making a huge mess. This can be a helpful tool for distracting and redirecting a child who is getting bored or on the verge of a meltdown.

Our favorite snack catcher for travel folds down compactly, making it easy to store when not in use. The material it’s made out of does tend to collect lint and crumbs, so I recommend bringing a baggie to store it in when you’re not using it.

• Travel high chair

A travel high chair can be a useful item for traveling with a toddler. It ensures that your child always has their own seat at the table and helps keep them contained so that they’re not climbing all over you or running around. This can make for a much more relaxing meal for yourself and your toddler. 

Travel high chairs are not always necessary if you’re going someplace where you know high chairs will be available. However if there aren’t high chairs, or if you’re not sure if there will be, bringing your own can be a nice way to ensure that mealtimes go smoothly.

• Water bottle

You’ll want to make sure your child is drinking a lot while traveling, so be sure to bring a water bottle and offer it to them frequently throughout the day.

We prefer the straw kind because they are easier for our toddler to use and less likely to spill.

• Disposable place mats

Feeding a toddler when you’re eating out can be tricky. The places you eat might not have toddler-safe dishes andd it can be a pain to have to feed your toddler bite by bite (plus in my experience toddlers often insist on feeding themselves!). 

That’s where these disposable place mats come in so handy. They have adhesive on all four sides to secure it to the table, providing a clean and stable surface for your toddler to eat on. Once they’re done eating, you can easily pull the place mat off of the table and throw it away. This helps to minimize mess and allows your child to have an independent eating experience without you having to stress about them breaking the dishes. 

Sleep Items

Some of the most important toddler travel essentials are those related to sleep. Whether or not your toddler sleeps well can make a huge difference to the success of your trip. A tired and grumpy toddler makes for a very long day while traveling. 

These sleep items are ones that can be hugely helpful in getting your toddler the sleep that they need. For everyone’s sake!

• White noise

We always bring white noise for our children while traveling. It helps block any ambient sounds that they might not be used to and also means that we don’t have to be quite so quiet as we’re moving around our hotel room or Airbnb. 

Oftentimes we’ll just use a white noise app on our phone, but if you want to be able to use your phone for other things, you can bring a travel white noise machine . 

While you’re away from home, you’ll want to make sure your toddler has a cozy and comfortable place to sleep. There are a couple of different ways you can do this. 

First, if your child sleeps in a crib you can see if your accommodations have a crib or pack ‘n play available for you to use while you’re there.

If you have a bed for your toddler, consider getting portable bed rails to keep your child from rolling off the bed in the night. These bed rails are placed underneath the bottom sheet to form a barrier at the edge of the bed. They provide a lot of peace of mind for when your toddler is sleeping in a full-sized bed. We’ve compiled a list of the best portable bed rails for travel with a toddlers to help you out. 

You can also choose to bring a portable toddler bed for your child so you can set up a cozy spot for them to sleep wherever you are. These can come in several different forms, from toddler cots to inflatable beds to pop-up tents. Whichever option you pick, make sure that your child knows what to expect and do your best to make sure it feels as safe and familiar as possible. 

Favorite stuffed animal

If your child has a special stuffed animal or blanket, make sure to bring it along to help them feel comfortable and safe during their sleep time. 

You could also bring along a favorite story or two as part of their bedtime routine. The key is to help it feel as much like the environment they’re used to as possible. 

A monitor may or may not be necessary, depending on your accommodations. If you’re all sleeping in the same room this may not be helpful as you’ll be able to easily hear if your child needs you. 

However, if you have a suite, an apartment, or a balcony, a monitor can give you a lot of peace of mind knowing that you can keep a close eye on your baby while in an unfamiliar place.

Blackout options

For many young children, keeping a dark sleep environment is necessary for a good night’s sleep. This can be especially true if you’re changing time zones and trying to adjust their sleep schedule. 

Many hotels will have blackout curtains in their rooms, however rentals or Airbnb’s often do not. We had a couple of really bad experiences with our children waking up extremely early in a new place due to light and since then I always bring a black out option for our toddlers. 

One way to create a dark environment is to bring travel blackout curtains . These curtains have suction cups that you can use to attach them to the window, darkening the whole room for sleep. 

Another great sleep aid is a SlumberPod (see our full SlumberPod review ) or SlumberPod alternative to create a dark sleep environment for your child. These products go around your child’s bed to block out light to help them sleep better and longer. The nice thing about this option is that it creates a private sleep area for you child, meaning you don’t have to be quite so quiet and careful about light if you’re sharing a room with your child. 

• Toddler airplane bed

If you’re flying with your toddler, another helpful sleep tool is a toddler airplane bed. These are products that can be used to extend the length of the seat and provide a comfortable place for your toddler to sleep on the plane. These can make a huge difference for international or long-haul flights where you’re traveling through your child’s normal bedtime.

When you’re traveling with a toddler, there are a few health items that you want to make sure to always have on hand. 

Medications

If your child has any medications, be sure to bring enough for your trip plus a bit extra to account for unexpected delays. 

Also remember to pack your child’s medication in your carryon luggage so that you aren’t caught without it in case anything happens to your checked luggage.

• Thermometer

Traveling with a thermometer ensures that you can monitor a fever if your child happens to get sick. I never travel without one and have actually had to use it a surprising number of times while on trips. It provides a little extra peace of mind knowing that you have a way to assess the severity of a sickness.

You never know when a child might get sick and bringing along some pain medication can make any unexpected sickness a lot less miserable for your child. This is another one I’ve had to use several times when traveling and I’m always so glad that I have it on hand. 

Hand sanitizer/sanitizing wipes

Traveling with kids means exposing them to lots of germs, which can often lead to them getting sick. And toddlers are the worst at this, as they tend to touch everything and then stick their hands in their mouths. Bring along hand sanitizer so that you can sanitize their hands frequently, especially before they eat. 

Sanitizing wipes are also very helpful for wiping down surfaces such as the tray tables and arm rests on the airplane and tables at restaurants. 

No one wants a sick kid, especially when you’re far from home. While you can’t always prevent sickness, sanitizing often definitely increases your chances of keeping everyone healthy.

Toddler travel essential basics

Having awesome travel activities is an absolute necessity when traveling with a toddler. That doesn’t mean that you need a lot of activities, but you do want a few great options that can capture your child’s attention and that they will return to over and over. 

Over our years of traveling with toddlers we’ve found some great activities that our toddlers always love. You can get some ideas from our list of our favorite toddler activities for planes and our favorite toddler activities for road trips . 

Consider not only activities for the flight or drive, but also for your hotel room and when you’re out and about. 

When you’re traveling with a toddler, you’ll want a great diaper bag to carry all of your essential items. I highly recommend a backpack diaper bag for travel. They are typically much more comfortable, secure against theft, and easier to carry over long periods of time. 

Diapers and wipes

If your toddler isn’t potty trained, don’t forget to bring along diapers and wipes. You can choose to bring along enough for your whole trip or, if you want to pack lighter, you can pack enough for the first few days and plan on picking some up at your destination (make sure it’s a place where they’re easy to find).

When possible, I try to just bring along all the diapers and wipes I will need for my trip to save myself the hassle of needing to pick some up during the trip. However, I know people who would prefer to pack less up front, so do what makes the most sense to you. 

Be sure to bring more diapers than you think you will need in your diaper bag if you’re traveling by plane. The middle of a long flight is not the place where you want to realize that your child is going through more diapers than you anticipated. 

• Travel potty

For toddlers who are potty trained or in the process of potty training, a portable potty can be a lifesaver when traveling. 

There are a few different kinds, but one of the most useful for travel is a foldable seat that can be placed over a larger toilet to make a secure and smaller seat for your toddler. This allows toddlers to feel safer on a toilet and helps to prevent any potty training regressions while traveling. They’re also compact and can easily be folded up and carried in your diaper bag.

Clothes are obviously going to be a travel essential. We’ll highlight a few items in this section and you can find a more detailed list of clothes down in the packing list.

If you’re trying to pack light, bring outfits that can be mixed and matched.

Make sure that you’re packing weather appropriate clothes for your toddler (eg. sun hat, swimsuit, sunglasses vs winter coat, gloves, warm hat). 

Plan on bringing an extra pair of pajamas or two in case of nighttime accidents. It’s also a good idea to bring an extra pair of shoes in case you lose one or they get wet. 

Toddler travel packing list

This is our tried and tested toddler packing list that I use for every trip. I love being able to pack for a trip and know I’m not missing anything important as long as I double check my trusty list!

Packing tip: Spend a few minutes thinking about your toddler to determine if there are any toddler travel essentials that you should include that are specific to your child. For example, our oldest went through a phase where he couldn’t handle the smell of the toilet, so there was a period where we always carried a travel sized Poo-Pourri around with us. Our other two never had the same issue, so that wasn’t included in their packing lists. There might be items that your child needs that other people wouldn’t think to include.

With a little preparation, traveling with a toddler can actually be a lot of fun. We’ve had great experiences traveling with our toddlers over the years (along with the occasional meltdown of course).

Traveling with Babies: How to Fly With A Pack and Play

Whether this is your first time flying with a baby or your tenth, preparing for air travel with your kids is a lot of work and can be stressful. The packing, prep, and travel time can be overwhelming for first-time and experienced parents! From the first time a baby comes home, you need somewhere for them to sleep safely, and as they get older, a spot for them to play without getting into trouble. If you plan on traveling, you will still need these things, which can be particularly difficult when the place you visit isn't exactly baby-proof. A pack n play is a play space, a bassinet, and a diaper changing station, making it the perfect solution. Whether driving or flying, you can fold them up and tuck them away in an easy-to- carry case for travel.

CAN YOU GATE CHECK A PACK-N-PLAY?

When traveling with my three young kids, I purchased small suitcases adorned with their favorite Disney characters, with wheels and a handle for my toddlers. You can also buy a solid color and use fabric markers to decorate and make it unique, so they’ll want to pull it. I bought mine from Amazon for $20, but you can sometimes find them used or even borrow from a friend. The toddler suitcases contained small toys, coloring books, storybooks, and a tablet to help keep the kids entertained during the flight. To make things even easier on everyone, all three kids’ clothes were in one checked bag equals less luggage to wait for after the flight. 

I held my infant in a wrap-style baby carrier to allow for hands-free, ensure that the baby was always near, and help keep the baby calm through the noisy space. The long piece of stretchy fabric was easily adjustable to different body types, which made it great for traveling, especially when visiting family. 

When traveling by airplane, some parents rent baby equipment at their destination. Whether a stroller, crib, car seat, high chair, or pack-n-play, these rentals get pricey - upwards of $25 a day per item. If you plan a little, you can bring your own gear and minimize what you carry through the airport! I always brought a stroller as it provided transportation for kids that get tired, a place to put the small suitcases, a bag of snacks we purchased before the ride, and the diaper bag. At your gate, check in at the desk to receive a tag for gate-checking a stroller. Your stroller will be waiting for you when you land at your destination.

Airport Sleeping Pods Taking Over the World

You have long layover or delayed flight. You’re super spent and want to sleep. You:

• Knock your head back, causing drool to run down your face and irreparable neck damage.
• Take a nap on the floor–the same floor trodden by thousands of dirty soles, from thousands of lands.
• If there is no raised arm rest, you stretch out on some heavily canted airport seats, simultaneously getting marginal sleep and ensuring the growth of the chiropractic industry.

A few upstarts from around the world are tackling this issue of airport sleep deprivation with small sleeping cubes. While they haven’t exactly taken over the world (the 3 here are only in one airport each), they offer minimal sleeping quarters for the beleaguered traveler.

Napcabs  (pictured above) is a German-based company with one outlet in the Munich airport (it had 2, but one is being serviced). It features a bed, soundproof walls, wifi, a multimedia screen with flight information and “anti-jetlag” lighting. Bedding is changed by an on-call cleaning staff.

At anywhere from 10-15€/hour, with a minimum 30€ charge, it’s not cheap, though consider if you’re flying overnight, this is a fraction of a hotel room’s cost.

Sleepbox is in the Moscow airport and has very similar features as Napcabs. The one edge Sleepbox has is that it features 2 beds, not 1. According to Wikipedia, they charge $15USD/hour.

Wikipedia also said there are concerns about bed-bugs. Unlike Napcabs, Sleepbox does not explicitly say how linens are dealt with. I am hardly a germophobe, but this seems like a major oversight. A post in Treehugger.com indicates that they originally wanted to use an automated linen changing system, but instead opted for traditional linen. We imagine/hope they have some sanitary setup.

Sleepbox is smartly trying to position itself as a space maximizer for hostels. While airports are a great application, I could imagine these units as replacements for real hotels and hostels, particularly for people who just need a place to sleep.

Snoozecube has 10 sleeping cubes set up in the Dubai airport. The company is from New Zealand, evidenced by the big fern leaf, similar to that of the All Black Rubgy team, emblazoned on their cubes and bedding. Like the others, they cost $16USD, are soundproof, offer wifi and connections to flight info. Their look is not quite as posh as the other 2, but the fact that they are clustered together in Dubai makes them like a makeshift hotel, which seems to make sense as you can have a standing staff and some isolation from the rest of the airport (something I think would be nice even if the cubes are soundproof).

High priced, hourly sleep cubes in airports might not be everyone’s bag. But similar to the Japanese sleeping pods  we looked at a while back, these firms are showing an alternative to hotel rooms that feature more–and cost more–than most travelers would prefer.

Weighing just 12 ounces, it has an impressive capacity of 488 cubic inches with a phone pocket and two main compartments. You can even use it to bring your yoga mat along by using the tuckaway front straps. Now those are Namaste vibes!

According to one reviewer, who hiked not one but two challenges (100 miles in 100 days each), said, “I can always fit more than I think in the outermost compartment. The mesh pocket holds {my} phone perfectly, and it's easy to access everything even when the bag is on.”

Plus, the four solid jewel-tone hues lend just the right amount of understated style. 

From hikes to flights, reviewers love this bag for any adventure. One chimed in, “This was perfect for my flight excursion. It's just the right size and shape, [and is] lightweight and comfortable.”

Fjallraven High Coast Crossbody Bag
