During the summer in Alaska you can fish for a variety of salmon and trout, including Alaskan King Salmon, Sockeye Salmon, Pink Salmon, and Rainbow Trout. Learn more about fishing in Alaska here.

A fishing license is required to participate in sport fishing in the state, but most licenses can easily be obtained online. In addition to your license, a harvest record card is required for any species with an annual limit.

Nonresident sport fishing licenses range in price from $25 for a one-day license, $45 for a three-day license, $70 for a seven-day license, $105 for a 14-day license, and $145 for an annual license. You can buy your fishing license here —you’ll just need your state-issued driver’s license or ID and a form of payment to complete the purchase.

Talaheim Lodge is the only Alaska fishing lodge with two helicopters for our guests’ exclusive use. Bush-planes are a wonderful way to travel, but their accessibility is limited to streams with enough water depth, or gravel bars with sufficient runway length. And with Alaska having the largest population of bush pilots in the world, a known bush-plane accessible fishing hole will undoubtedly mean you’ll have company.

Within a 15-minute helicopter flight from Talaheim, we have access to over 100 miles of great fishing waters. Tributaries that are so remote that if you see a foot print, it was likely your guides from the week prior. Not only do guests of Talaheim fish streams rarely shared by other anglers, the lodge itself is located 80 air miles from Anchorage, in an area only accessible via our private airstrip, thus further limiting the competition.

The fact that we can reach a variety of tributaries during the week also means we don’t over fish our waters.

Plus, fish that are used to maneuvering around human predators are smart. On the other hand, fish that aren’t used to human predators is a beautiful thing— they bite hard and without reservation. They jump, fight, and pull on the line like their life depends on it.

Most of our rivers are wade-able and perfect for fishermen that like to cast across small rivers in search for that perfect catch. But if you need a break from wading, no problem. Our portable blow-up canoes offer that flexibility– you can choose to walk the river in part, or not at all. With a helicopter as your means of transportation, you are free to follow the fish, whether that be for three miles or just 300 feet. We’ll pick you up wherever you end up.

At Talaheim Lodge, we don’t believe in combat fishing, and when deciding on a once-in-a-lifetime Alaskan fishing adventure, we think neither should you.

Heli Fishing Arctic Char | Private charter | Nuuk

Bring your fishing experience to the next level! By joining this heli-fishing tour, you can reach one of the most remote and almost inaccessible rivers of Akia and fish for Arctic char in almost no time.

Akia, also know as the Nordland is a large area located across the fjord from Nuuk. The landscapes of Akia are relatively flat and rich in wildlife, from ptarmigans to breeding Arctic Charr.

Your tour starts at Nuuk airport where you will be met by our local and experienced helicopter pilot.  After safety breathing, you will be seated in the AS-350 helicopter and spend an estimated total of 30 to 35 minutes in the air. From Nuuk, the tour continues across the fjord, and along the coast of Akia. 

The captain will land the helicopter on a small plateau near of one the area’s largest trout-carrying rivers.   Here you will spend the 2 hours fishing for Arctic char while exposing yourself to the beauty of the Greenlandic wilderness. The Arctic char is known as a good fighter and a challenging catch to reel in.

Combining fishing and flying allows you and your co-travelers to travel far distances to remote places in no time – and that is the exact advantage of booking this tour.

• Layered clothing. Ideally, you should pack a thermal underwear layer (top and bottom), activity layer (e.g. hiking pants and shirt), insulation layer (e.g. fleece or down jacket), and outer layer of windproof clothing (top and bottom). You may not need all of this on any particular day, but you should have it available. You should always bring a windproof jacket, regardless of the weather.

Day 1 Anchorage to Tordrillo Mountain Lodge | Floatplane Transfer from your hotel to Lake Hood, the world’s largest floatplane lake. Board your floatplane for a scenic 50-minute flight to Tordrillo Mountain Lodge. Nestled on the shores of Judd Lake, the activity options are endless. Activities for adventure-seekers include stand up paddle boarding, jet skiing, and wake-surfing. For guests seeking peace and quiet there’s yoga on the dock, casting a line from the lawn, hiking nearby trails and wildlife observation. And for the fisherman get ready to cast your fishing rod and reel into the best fishing holes in the Tordrillo Mountains! (Lunch & dinner included today)

Days 2 – 4 Tordrillo Mountain Lodge | Helicopter Adventures Take to the skies over the next two days for helicopter-led adventures from your base at Tordrillo Mountain Lodge. Along with your expert guide, enjoy helicopter led hiking where you can spot wildlife, trek across ancient glaciers or picnic in meadows of wildflowers. Another day of helicopter-led adventures will take you riverside for legendary helicopter fishing. Wade through the river in search of fish, hopping on a raft when the waterways deepen. Flying to the Sth West of Darwin the habitats you will visit include floodplains, coastal creeks and estuaries of the Daly River and Anson Bay region.  Where you visit on a particular day will depend on a range of factors including the season, weather / rainfall, tides, recent fishing success etc.

Departing around 8.15 am and returning around 4pm.

Catch rates varying with the seasons with Feb-early May being prime time that said these trips can still produce all year round. 

Provided is all fishing gear, lunch’s, soft drinks and plenty of cool water. You will need to bring a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and a camera. 

Much more than a fishing trip

With up to 2 hours scenic flying included in the day, you will witness some spectacular Top End landscapes along the way including extensive river systems, vast floodplains, wetlands, billabongs and long stretches of deserted white sandy beaches with abundant wildlife present for much of the year.

There are days it must be one of the most spectacular nature-based displays in Australia.  We have watched dingos chasing pigs, large herds of water buffalo on the march, enormous crocodiles and sharks, all from the air.  You might also see brolgas and jabiru stalking prey in the wetlands, and kites soaring on the thermals – definitely do not forget your camera (and a spare memory card or two).

Our Heli Fishing experiences provide unmatched access to remote, permit-only fishing locations, spending less time travelling and more time fishing while witnessing some spectacular Top End Landscapes along the way.   

We offer Full Day Helifish, Half Day HeliFish and custom designed multi day fishing adventures with an option to suit all time frames and experience levels, including absolute beginners. 

We catch a variety of fish all year round with target species including Barramundi, Salmon and Mangrove Jack.  

All of our pilots are trained fishing guides happily sharing their skills, techniques and local knowledge to give you the best chance of success.  

• All fishing equipment including quality rods, reels and lures are provided 
• We practice catch (great photo!) and release to protect fish stocks and the habitats we visit. 
• All tours operate as private charters with a minimum of 2 passengers (or equivalent payment) required. 
• Individual helicopter capacity ranges from 3 seats to 5 and is passenger weight dependant. 
• Multiple helicopters are available to cater for small groups wanting to fish together.

HALF DAY HELIFISH

Our half day HeliFish focusses on fishing hot-spots to the North East of Darwin.  Habitats visited include the billabongs, barrages and seasonal floodplains!

Target species include Barramundi, Mangrove Jack, Salmon and more!

FULL DAY HELIFISH

Our full day Helifish focuses on the abundant floodplains of the Daly River region as well as the coastal creeks, estuaries and striking red cliffs area of Anson Bay (refer map below).

The scale and remoteness of these areas means we rarely come across others and the fish stocks are consistently high with great variety.  More of our customers have reeled in their bucket-list “metery” in this area than anywhere else we visit. 

The scenic flying in this region is visually spectacular!  We overfly extensive river systems, vast floodplains, wetlands, billabongs and long stretches of deserted white sandy beaches –  and we can fish them all!

This tour combines two of the Top Ends favourite pastimes… fishing and time at the pub with our mates!

HELICOPTERS

• All helicopter pricing is per seat, independent of age. 
• Infants aged 0-2 years can fly free of charge on the lap of a parent or guardian with a maximum of 1 infant per flight (as per CASA regulations).
• Passengers 3 years and older must occupy their own seat. 
• Payload limits apply to all aircraft. Accurate individual passenger body weights are required at time of booking. 
• Maximum individual seat weight limit of 130kg applies. 

HELI PUB CRAWL SPECIAL TERMS & CONDITIONS APPLY:

•  Whilst we want you to enjoy the tour there are strict aviation regulations that apply to the carriage of disorderly or abusive passengers and those under the influence of alcohol & or drugs. 
•  Should the situation arise where any passenger is deemed to pose a safety risk to the flight at any point of the tour, the pilot in command reserves the right to refuse travel to that passenger. In the event of this occurring no refund will be issued and the passenger shall be responsible for making their own arrangements to return to Darwin.

Heli-fishing, hell ya…

Travelled to Crescent Spur lodge in August 2022 to fish the Fraser & Goat rivers as well as other area streams. In addition, the trip included flying into pristine alpine lakes where, using belly boats, we caught rainbow trout. Our group landed multiple personal best Bull Trout on the rivers and everyone landed trout in the alpine lakes. Beside the fishing, the methods of accessing the fishery, either solely by helicopter or in conjunction with jet boats, made the trip an outdoor adventure in addition to a world-class fishing trip. Fly Fishing

Texas fly fishing at its finest! Each autumn, usually by mid-November when the water temperature drops below 70 degrees, Joshua Creek is stocked with rainbow trout and, from then through May, provides an exciting challenge to fly fishermen. There is always time to relax between bird hunts with some Hill Country fly fishing in the crystal-clear waters of spring-fed Joshua Creek! Some guests opt to spend their whole day casting a line to the fish, hoping to discover the one fly that will prove irresistible to the trout. 

Fly fishing gear is available for rent, and you can purchase flies in the Pro Shop that are particularly suited to these waters. You're welcome to bring your own fly-fishing gear, as well.

If you're not yet a fly fisherman, or you're just beginning to develop the skill, fly casting instructions can be arranged for you. Guides are also available if you want a guided fly-fishing experience.

Fly Fishing Instruction

Designed for all fly fishing skill levels. Learn about equipment, stream dynamics, fish behavior, knots, fly selection, and basic fly casting. Then head to the water for some practical fish catching applications. This class can be tailored for novice fisherman or advanced individuals who want to polish their skills.

Guided Fly Fishing Float & Wade Trip

Guadalupe Float Trip includes transportation to and from river or waterway access points, professional float craft, JCR Guide, basic fishing tackle and flies, PFD, snacks & beverages**. Full-day also includes a box lunch. It is important to know that JCR Fly-Fishing Float Trips are intended to be fishing excursions, not instructional sessions. Guides will provide basic tips, but recommend a casting lesson before float trip if needed.
