Rock-n-roll is back with a bang! Literally. The Hella Mega Tour stop by Atlanta’s Truist Park was a gargantuan display of ear-deafening bangers, colorful confetti, flashy fireworks, insane props, a first-class light and strobe exhibition, and an impressive display of guitar work — by a Green Day fan named Clay. Led by a trio of well-known and well-loved bands, the Hella Mega Tour was hella mega magnificent. Outfits Green Day , Weezer and Fall Out Boy joined forces – ala NBA super teams – to bring back a sense of revival to the term “stadium rock” and provide the 35 thousand+ fans in the house every penny’s worth of that ticket price.

Rivers Cuo,o of Weezer

Despite early heavy rainfall, Weezer took the stage to commence the evening. Armed with an hour’s worth of a setlist and a showy pastel-and-neon wall of speakers, the Rivers Cuomo -fronted foursome was quite delightful and vibrant. Cuomo, sporting a new mullet-n-stash ’80s rockstar mien, was by far the biggest story of the Weezer set. Notorious for his clean-cut sweater-n-khakis nerdy musician vibe, Rivers reinvented himself with a new spiky-leather-jacket-and-distressed-jeans edge that further enhances the ironic coolness of this Los Angeles quartet.

All said and done, these Cali dudes performed all their greatest hits from Hash Pipe and Island In The Sun to Buddy Holly and even that viral Toto cover, Africa . The ball got rolling, Weezer successfully set the standard at considerable heights. Now it was time for Fall Out Boy to grab the baton and carry the night.

hella mega tour prices

Fall Out Boy came to the dais guitars blazing — seriously. In a sea of pyrotechnics, that complement that famous fire-shooting Pete Wentz Fender bass, this Illinois pop punk quadrumvirate came out with a sense of urgency. An aural and visual roller coaster for the senses is what Fall Out Boy brings to the table. Sure, the boys navigate that loaded discography smoothly and energetically; nonetheless, it is lead singer Patrick Stump’s piercing tenor that really jumps at you. Over the years, Patrick Stump ‘s improved control of his bottomless range has made the Fall Out Boy experience one soon not to be forgotten.

Ultimately, the Fall Out Boy portion of the Hella Mega Tour is one of quality tied to quantity. From their video introduction by actor Ron Livingston and throughout their 15-song showing ending with closer, Saturday , Stump and Co. had it going on. Let the closing act try and reach that high bar.

hella mega tour prices

Closing duties went to a little known band from the late ’80s punk scene by the name of Green Day . Steered by a seemingly ageless Billie Joe Armstrong , this California three-piece ensemble played up to the task of making the Hella Mega Tour’s finale, well, MEGA!

Introduced via a listening party to Queen ‘s Bohemian Rhapsody followed by Ramones ‘ Blitzkrieg Bop , the storied punk trio came in to deliver an energetic opening by way of their 2004 hit-single, American Idiot . With a packed stadium amount of fanatics on their feet, Tré Cool and the gang known as Green Day instantly grabbed a hold of onlookers’ attention and did not let go until their exit some 90 minutes later.

“ Are you vaccinated? Yes? Are your sure? Come on up! ” asks Billie Joe to a fan holding up a CAN I PLEASE PLAY GUITAR sign. This lucky guy, who would later be revealed to go by name of Clay, joins the guys for a rendition of Knowledge ; a throwback cover of the now extinct band, Operation Ivy . Such was Clay’s positive impression on the band, that the suddenly-viral youngster was now tasked with assisting on the execution of smash hit, Basket Case . Talk about a once in a lifetime opportunity. Clay, if you’re reading this, WELL DONE!

Ultimately, Green Day slayed! The Hella Mega Tour in Atlanta was a complete and utter success. Much needed by a starved live music audience after this pandemic shut venues’ doors down for what seemed to be an eternity. Prior to the whole Covid mess we would ask, “ Is Rock Music dead? ” – silly question if you think about it. The answer is NO, HELL NO, NOT AT ALL. Rock music is definitely not dead. It is very much alive, kicking, screaming, bringing joy and packing stadiums with the likes of Green Day , Fall Out Boy and Weezer .

Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day performs during the Hella Mega tour.

Hella Mega tour review – pop-punk’s middle-aged legends still have spunk

London Stadium Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Weezer combine for a pleasingly heavy romp through their hits, though there are spells when they lapse into cliche and gimmickry

B etter late than never. It’s been almost three years since pop-punk idols Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Weezer announced their Hella Mega tour and, thanks to Covid-19, only now are the triumvirate hitting the UK. A crowd of 75,000 congregate under a pale grey sky to see the royal family of their genre in one spot, preceded by the Aussie pub rockers Amyl and the Sniffers.

Amy Taylor’s rabble aren’t used to the glitz of stadiums and are more suited to venues where their in-your-face rock’n’roll ragers can bounce off the walls until they boot you in the chest. Tonight’s immensity sadly swallows up much of that force, and the quartet’s gravelly melodies are nowhere near gigantic enough to compensate. At least their singer is as vivacious a leader as ever, exploring every inch of the enormous stage.

Amy Taylor of Amyl and the Sniffers

Promoting the ode to vintage hard rock that is 2021 album Van Weezer , Rivers Cuomo and company are unrecognisable. The frontman’s traded his geek chic for a Metallica T-shirt and dad-rock locks – appropriate given the drastically upped oomph Weezer are bringing this evening. A cover of Enter Sandman epitomises this newfound power, although the live environs also make classics like Say It Ain’t So and Beverly Hills hit harder and heavier than they ever have on record.

Rivers Cuomo of Weezer performs at London Stadium

Fall Out Boy need to decide what their brand is. The Chicagoans have peddled gleefully tongue-in-cheek pop-punk (with increasing emphasis on the “pop” as their career’s progressed) since 2003. Yet, they seize their stage in front of an all-black backdrop, and the emergence of a haunted house drum riser for Dance, Dance implies an affinity for horror. Thnks fr th Mmrs, This Ain’t a Scene and My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark all reliably set the stadium aflutter, even if the numbers played in between can’t lift themselves above pop-punk archetypes.

Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy.

American Idiot, Holiday, Know Your Enemy, Boulevard of Broken Dreams: Green Day commence with a tetralogy of their biggest hits, and an onslaught of pyrotechnics and crowd repartee only accentuates the excitement. As much as it’s a euphoric opening salvo, it also means that the Californians peak early. Their remaining 90 minutes are all diminishing returns and repeated tricks.

When Billie Joe Armstrong hauls a fan onstage to play guitar, barely an hour after doing the same for another to let them sing, there’s an inescapable sense of Groundhog Day tedium. It takes nothing less than Wake Me Up When September Ends, Jesus of Suburbia and Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) in sequence – the latter two endowed with enough fireworks to overstimulate a pyromaniac – to recapture the high of when this set first started. Nonetheless, Billie informs his rabid crowd: “It took us 1,000 days to get here, but we made it!” and the roars in return telegraph that many found this worth the wait.

Review: At the Hella Mega Tour it was all about the cult of Green Day

Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Weezer packed Petco Park’s East Village stadium, and the three rock acts doted on their loyal followings

“Do the kids still like rock music?” Fall Out Boy’s bassist Pete Wentz asked the Petco Park crowd, halfway through its set at the Hella Mega Tour. Judging from the screams that echoed throughout downtown San Diego, it’s safe to say the kids — and the genre — are alright.

Hordes of fans swarmed East Village on Sunday night to see three big names: Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Weezer (The Interrupters, a ska-punk band from Los Angeles, opened the event). Though the stacked lineup straddles the pop-punk genre, the rock ‘n’ roll vibe permeated the stadium. And ticketholders dressed the part, clad in a standard uniform of ripped jeans and band tees.

The crowd during the Hella Mega Tour at Petco Park in downtown San Diego on August 29, 2021.

Though elder millennials and young Gen Xers dominated the crowd, the all-ages show didn’t discriminate. Nearly every generation was represented in the stands, from young kids out late on a school night to Boomers with “Cool Mom” tank tops. Though similarly dressed, the fanbase spanned all walks of life — filled with self-identified outsiders and misfits who leaned on the music of all three bands to get through hard times.

Mere hours before the show, a light sprinkle threatened to re- re- schedule Hella Mega Tour’s San Diego date, originally slated for July 24. Luckily, the weather pulled through to deliver clear skies and dry chairs by the 5:30 p.m. start time. But that famous San Diego climate came at a price, with a bright ball of sunlight blinding the crowd — and possibly questioning their outfit choices — as the sea of Vans, Converse and Dr. Martens-wearers searched for their seats.

Perhaps the daytime element served as the biggest disadvantage for Weezer, who took to the stage a full hour before the sun set. To the rock band’s credit, the seats were far more packed than a typical “opener” would draw. (Admittedly, the triple Grammy-award winning band would likely scoff at being referred to as anyone’s opening act.)

Singer Rivers Cuomo and drummer Patrick Wilson of Weezer

Be it the daytime backdrop or a concerted effort to save energy, the audience reacted casually to Weezer’s performance; aside from those donning “Weezer” t-shirts, listeners mostly stayed seated, approvingly nodding or swaying in their seats. Hits like “Buddy Holly” and “Pork and Beans” picked up steam, and try-hardfront man Rivers Cuomo’s audience pandering — such as changing a lyric in “Beverly Hills” to “livin’ in San Diego” — were received well.

Weezer’s ego may have taken a bit of a blow when the audience participation soared to a song that wasn’t even its own, but its radio-friendly cover of “Africa” by Toto. The crowd also went wild to a single line in “El Scorcho.”After Cuomo belted the lyrics, “I asked you to go to the Green Day concert,” the band took a dramatic pause, followed by the Jumbotron zooming in on a fan’s Green Day shirt before panning to the rest of the now-standing crowd.

The sun finally dipped under the stands just as Weezer wrapped the last song of its one-hour set. A half hour later, Fall Out Boy was greeted by the excitement of nightfall paired with flames blasting from the stage. Dressed casually — aside from the shirtless, tattoo-clad drummer Andy Hurley, the band donned black t-shirts and hoodies — the four-piece proved looks can be deceiving, delivering a solid performance that was far from sloppy.

As expected, fangirls swooned for Wentz, who received more name chants and crowd asides than lead singer Patrick Stump. But if the other band members took offense, they didn’t let it show. The crowd returned the energy Fall Out Boy delivered; dedicated fans stayed standing throughout the set, while those sitting sang along to the set list that spanned more than a decade, rarely missing a beat.

Singer Patrick Stump and Bassist Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy

Post Fall Out Boy, the surprisingly-patient audience was rewarded with a two-song crowd energizer. Speakers started blaring Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and the Jumbotron plastered faces of screaming, singing and smiling faces. Then came the most bizarre appearance of the night — an unknown person dressed in a bunny costume, who chugged a beer before leading the crowd in “Blitzkrieg Bop” by the Ramones.

A pink bunny on stage before Green Day plays

Any speculation about which act the sold-out crowd was there to see washed away once Green Day stepped onto the stage. In unison, the entire audience rose to its feet and stayed standing for the nearly two-hour set.

Yet it didn’t seem like the crowd’s energy was enough for 49-year-old frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, who performed like he was still in his 20s. Acting almost as a cult leader, he made constant demands on the crowd, which obeyed without question. Per his orders, the crowd agreed to “go crazy,” from jumping to “Know Your Enemy” to putting their “f—ing hands up in the air” during “American Idiot.” Armstrong even convinced everyone to shine their phone lights during “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” — illuminating Petco Park enough to turn off all the stadium lights.

Singer Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day in concert

Despite his demands, Armstrong’s orders carried no animosity. The band’s intense feelings of appreciation permeated the performance, giving the audience star treatment and delivering 110 percent for every song in the iron-clad set. From the sweat dripping off the band members’ hands during “Wake Me Up When September Ends” to Armstrong shining a physical spotlight on the crowd during “Holiday,” it was clear that for Green Day, the fans come first. (One fan was even invited on stage to perform a guitar solo for “Knowledge,” a song by Operation Ivy, and was then allowed to keep the guitar.)

“It’s been a long year but we’re still alive,” Armstrong told the audience, his voice bleeding with sincerity, before easing into the band’s 2016 hit “Still Breathing.”

A large burst of confetti, fireworks display and a fittingly titled encore, “Time Of Your Life” closed the six-hour evening. After the COVID-19 shutdown starved these rock fans of live music for over a year, Green Day, Weezer and Fall Out Boy delivered on their promise for a Hella Mega, time of their lives.

Review: green day’s rocking hella mega tour offers respite from pandemic .

“We’ve had to look at our (expletive) phones all during this (expletive) pandemic,” Armstrong declared. “Now we get to be together. … This is unity!”

The Hella Mega Tour — also featuring Fall Out Boy, Weezer and the Interrupters — was, in fact, all about returning to normalcy, or the latest incarnation of it, amidst continually trying times of COVID. Of all the concerts since live music returned in force this summer, the stadium-sized spectacle was the most overt celebration yet, right from the Interrupters’ Kevin Bivona asking, “Detroit, Michigan, how does it feel to be at a concert right now?!” through to the fireworks display that ended Green Day’s set nearly five and a half hours later.

The tour — which was originally booked for 2020 — did not need to be reminded that the pandemic is still present tense, of course; Fall Out Boy returned to the stage Tuesday after missing three previous shows due to an unspecified team member’s infection. But it was an opportunity to put concerns on their own kind of pause, at least for a few hours, and enjoy a communal night of noisy big fun.

And to be reminded that rock ‘n’ roll could still be a force to be reckoned with. Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz told the 35,000 or so at Comerica’s second concert in three days (after Guns N’ Roses on Sunday) that Hella Mega was organized to face down skeptics who felt the genre was no longer a strong draw. “We decided to challenge that theory and put together the biggest (expletive) rock tour this summer,” Wentz said. “We think it’s pretty (expletive) evident the kids still listen to rock ‘n’ roll.”

Few bands prove that better, on a consistent basis, than Green Day, and Tuesday night was no exception. A band that’s willing to do anything it thinks will entertain, including pyrotechnics and confetti, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame trio and its three additional musicians had Comerica Park singing along to every word of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” before it hit the stage, then had the stadium shaking as it cranked into “American Idiot.” The ebullient Armstrong led the charge through choreographed craziness — pulling a fan on stage at one point to play guitar during a cover of Operation Ivy’s “Knowledge,” then to a stage dive back into the crowd — and plenty of call-and-response chants.

And the parade of hits — “Longview,” “Welcome to Paradise,” “Basket Case,” “Minority,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” a cover of Kiss’ “Rock and Roll All Nite,” et al — had the crowd singing almost as much as Armstrong himself.

Green Day did skew a bit deeper within the fusillade, however. Lyrics such as “It’s wonderful to be alive. … Everything is gonna be all right” from “Pollyanna” felt more meaningful in the context of current circumstances, and Armstrong took more than a few opportunities during the nearly 100-minute set to declare that “We’re still alive!” and note, “We all waited out this (expletive) pandemic, but now we all get to be together.”

Fall Out Boy was clearly happy to be back on the road, with Wentz acknowledging that “this week has been a bit of a cluster… for our band.” He acknowledged the support the band had received from fans, and the quartet’s hour-long set, fortified with regular bursts of fire, played as a faux “space opera,” complete with a narrator on screen and scenery changes. More effective was the 14-song set list, another hit-filled affair that reached back for “Where Is Your Boy” — which frontman Patrick Stump said the band played at the Shelter during its early days — and rocked through favorites such as “Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down,” “Uma Thurman,” “Thanks fr th Mmrs,” “Centuries,” “Dance, Dance,” “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up)” and more.

hella mega tour prices

Weezer’s hour — which followed the Interrupters’ short blast of ska-flavored frenzy — sported a few songs from its pair of 2021 albums “OK Human” and “Van Weezer” but mostly tripped down memory lane as well. With frontman Rivers Cuomo decked out like Ron Burgundy in gym class, complete with headband and tube socks, the group laid power chord-heavy alt.rock such as “Hash Pipe” and “Beverly Hills” next to more measured fare like “My Name is Jonas,” “Undone — The Sweater Song” and “Say It Ain’t So.” Its spookily faithful take on Toto’s “Africa” whipped up a frenzy among those who were a long way from being born when it first came out in 1982, while “Buddy Holly” had those same fans jumping along as confetti showered above the stadium floor.

All told, Hella Mega was a welcome and refreshing respite from the reality outside Comerica’s walls. And when Green Day’s Armstrong sang “I hope you had the time of your life” during the evening-ending “Good Riddance,” it had a different resonance than normal but still reflected exactly how everyone in the stadium was feeling at that moment.

These Russian stone carvings date back to 12,000 BC. WHAT??!

hella mega tour prices

With its gracious, broad and tree-lined boulevards, well maintained turn of the 19th to 20th century buildings and a lively riverfront, the city of Khabarovsk is often called the most European city in Asia. Nothing in the tranquil city hints of a history that goes beyond the middle of the 19th century, but a short road trip along the Amur River is enough to unfurl a treasure trove of petroglyphs (prehistoric rock carvings) that are believed to date back to 12,000 BC.

Khabarovsk's city center

Khabarovsk's city center

The Khabarovsk Krai, which has about 789,000 square kilometers of territory, is one of the most sparsely populated places on the planet. These vast swathes of emptiness are visible when one drives on the highway that connects Khabarovsk with the industrial city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

The Nanai village of Sikachi-Alyan on the Amur River

The Nanai village of Sikachi-Alyan on the Amur River

75 kilometers north of Khabarovsk and just off the highway and on the right bank of the Amur is the Nanai village of Sikachi-Alyan, where the petroglyphs are located. Residents call the village the ‘home of angry spirits’, thanks to the mystical occurrences that many have claimed to witness there.

History on the rocks

The area has about 200 petroglyphs, with a significant number being well preserved. The petroglyphs are easily accessible, as they are near the water’s edge on basalt boulders.

Petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan

The best time to visit the area is actually early or late winter (despite the brutal cold), since the overflowing waters of the Amur hide them in the warmer months. Floods and ice floes have also caused considerable damage to many of the petroglyphs. Locals say some of the boulders have been turned upside down.

The carvings that date from different periods depict hunting scenes, animals, such as elk, horses and mammoths, shamans and shamanic masks and even people sitting in boats.

Russia’s Far East is believed to have been one of the last habitats of mammoths before they became extinct. Among the best-preserved petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan, there is one engraving that clearly depicts a mammoth, while another shows a mammoth with an unknown creature. There’s also a large depiction of a beast with a tail.

Svetlana Onenko, a local historian who is also the curator of the indigenous people’s ethnographic museum and cultural center in Sikachi-Alyan, says the very existence of the mammoth depictions proves that the petroglyphs date back to around 12,000 BC. She adds that the ancient dwellers of this area probably also hunted mammoths.

The older images, dating to the Paleolithic age, were carved out using stone tools. It should be noted that some archaeologists argue that the wild horses depicted in some of the petroglyphs did not exist in the Amur Region even in the Neolithic age.

The newer carvings, including those of shamans and shamanic masks were used with more modern tools. These images are sacred to the Nanai and other indigenous groups who live in the village with a total population of just 300. Onenko says the members of the indigenous community are descended from the people who carved out the petroglyphs. Some European anthropologists, however, believe that the indigenous people were more recent settlers, who moved to the area around 2,000 years ago from Manchuria.

An abode of Shamanism

Neo-Shamanists visit the area from different parts of the world and take part in rituals, which some suspect as being influenced by a cult. Such is the belief in Shamanism in this area that the museum, which has a large number of indigenous artefacts, crafts and ancient Chinese coins, keeps its Shamanic objects in a designated space that is ritually blessed. “Shamanic objects are believed to possess a powerful (and potentially dangerous) energy,” Onenko says.

Locals claim to spot mystic occurrences near the so-called Starukha (Eng.: “old lady”) rock formation. According to indigenous legends, human beings did not die at one point of time, but their population grew so large that there wasn’t enough food for everyone. So the earth’s spirits decided that people, like animals, would also have to die.

The Starukha was apparently the first human being to face death and ended up turning into that big (and apparently haunted) rock.

First Russian visitor

While the Nanai and other indigenous groups were aware of the existence of the petroglyphs for centuries, the outside world came to know of them only in 1859, a year after the foundation of the city of Khabarovsk.

This “discovery” was made by Richard Maack, a geographer, naturalist and explorer who set out on an expedition of the Amur and Ussuri valleys. Maack, who was born in the Russian Empire’s Baltic governorate of Livonia, studied natural sciences at the University of St. Petersburg and undertook several expeditions to Siberia and the Russian Far East in the 1850s.

Maack’s main area of interest was botany and six previously unknown plants that he collected by the Amur were named after him. His expedition north of the newly-founded Khabarovsk led him to Sikachi-Alyan, where he spotted the petroglyphs. There are less than a handful of surviving copies of Maack’s book titled, ‘Travel on the Amur river made by order of the Siberian department of the Emperor’s Russian Geographical Society in 1855’, which contains a wealth of information.

Russian archaeologists, scientists and historians took a great interest in the petroglyphs in the 20th century. In the 1930s, archaeologist Nikolai Kharlamov photographed them in detail. Three decades later, ethnographer and historian Alexei Okladnikov went on several expeditions to the area and wrote about the petroglyphs in detail in two books. His findings suggest that the artwork of Sikachi-Alyan had some resemblance to its counterparts from South East Asia, Polynesia and Australia.

The petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan are now among the most visited sites in Khabarovsk Krai. The Russian federal government was declared the legal owner of the petroglyphs in 2018 and efforts are underway to better preserve them, as well get the rock formations listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Tours, Attractions and Things To Do in Khabarovsk

Khabarovsk travel guide.

  • 2. Attractions
  • 3. Cultural life
  • 4. Souvenirs

Khabarovsk, Russia fascinates visitors with its unusual heritage and fabulous untouched nature. Tourists are drawn to the native culture, eclectic architecture and mesmerizing waters in this off-the-beaten-track destination, which promises a unique and memorable vacation.

As the center of Russia’s far eastern region of Khabarovsk Krai, the city offers celebrations throughout the year which are sure to give added flair to your trip, from traditional culture days to large-scale food fests. It is easy to keep a full itinerary during your stay thanks to its many theaters, museums, restaurants, workshops and quest rooms. Guests who want a more relaxed holiday can venture into the serenity of Khabarovsk nature, including the coast of the Sea of Japan or one of the region’s many picturesque lakes .

Khabarovsk Architecture

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk architecture surprises with its harmonious blending of varying types and styles. This is due in large part to major changes which the city underwent in the mid-19th-early 20th centuries in conjunction with developments in the political, economic, scientific and technical spheres. The search for new trends in architecture came after the death of the classicism style, which had dominated the Russian Empire and the wider world for centuries. Beginning in the mid-19th century, the practice of mixing eclectic architectural styles began to emerge, leading to an era of amazing stylistic improvisations.

During the final decades of Romanov reign, many educational institutions for architects and engineers were opened. As a result, the face of numerous Russian cities began to change rapidly. Art Nouveau - a new, modern trend that absorbed several preceding styles – had come to dominate the architectural scene.

Many Art Nouveau buildings can still be seen in central Khabarovsk. These include:

  • Takeuchi apartment building (5 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Esplanade Hotel (18 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Luhta apartment building (84 Komsomolskaya Street)
  • Zandau apartment building (34 Muravyov-Amursky Street)

Khabarovsk also has many Gothic buildings, a style distinguished by its elegance and attention to detail. Every element of Gothic architecture emphasize a vertical orientation, as seen in the massive walls and columns, round arches and wide windows which contrast with narrow towers, pointed peaks and lancet windows.

Khabarovsk’s Gothic architecture is best represented by the artillery warehouse buildings located at 16 Komsomolskaya Street. Another notable example is the Red Guard Headquarters (105 Komsomolskaya Street), which has been preserved in its original form. The complex consists of two identical two-story brick buildings with unusual motifs containing pseudo-gothic elements.

Also of note is the early 20th-century Treasury Building, a luxurious red brick structure with openwork balconies that exudes an architectural grace.

Khabarovsk also has many Soviet-era buildings which were mostly designed in the constructivism style. Characterized by their enormous size and grotesque shapes, they often occupy most of the block and dominate the surrounding space.

During your Khabarovsk excursion, be sure to appreciate its unique architectural heritage by going for a walk downtown .

Khabarovsk Attractions

Khabarovsk, Russia

The layout of Khabarovsk is very simple: its 3 main streets of Lenin, Muravyov-Amursky and Seryshev pass through the downtown area, while Ussuriysky and Amur Boulevards run perpendicular to them. A distinctive feature of Khabarovsk are its many hills, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes for your walk.

Begin your walking tour of Khabarovsk from the train station, where you can see the monument to Yerofey Khabarov, the famous explorer for whom the city is named. Nearby is a sculpture of a double-headed eagle, erected in memory of soldiers, officers and builders of the Far Eastern Railway. Moving from the station along Amur Boulevard you will reach the central market, just past which is Lenin Square. A spacious area with a granite fountain in the center, it is the main plaza of Khabarovsk and the site of the city’s Christmas and New Year celebrations. Next to the square is Dynamo Park, famous for its three ponds and Ferris wheel.

From Lenin Square, move along Muravyov-Amursky Street to reach Amur Embankment, passing most of Khabarovsk’s famous 19th-20th century buildings along the way. Descend to the embankment via two grand staircases or make a small detour onto Shevchenko Street, where you can follow the slope until you reach the embankment’s main stretch. Among other things, the area is home to the House of Officers and three museums.

As you move along the embankment through a park you will come across the city symbol of Khabarovsk, a building set on a steep cliff above the Amur River. It was at the foot of this cliff that the founders of a military post, the first semblance of civilization in the area, first landed.

After reaching the river and walking along Ussuriysky Boulevard to Turgenev Street, turn right to reach Glory Square. Here you will find another famous Khabarovsk landmark, Transfiguration Cathedral, along with a magnificent view of the Amur River and its dreamy islands. Glory Square concludes the main walking route of Khabarovsk, but from here you can reach any part of the city by public transport or taxi .

Khabarovsk Cultural Life

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk entertainment centers around its many theaters and museums. Visit Khabarovsk Museum of Local Lore to get a better glimpse of city and regional life. Children and adults alike will want to visit Fishes of Amur River Museum, an aquarium which is home to some 90 species of the underwater world. To catch the vibe of local artists, head to the Far Eastern Art Museum.

There are several theaters in Khabarovsk, each of which is worth visiting:

  • Khabarovsk Regional Puppet Theater;
  • Triad Pantomime Theater;
  • Khabarovsk Regional Philharmonic;
  • White Theater, and others.

In addition, Khabarovsk offers several concert halls, culture houses, cinemas and art institutions .

Khabarovsk Souvenirs

While the city’s souvenir selection is not as diverse as in other Russian cities, guests can still find something suited to their tastes on their tour to Khabarovsk. Amur River and the Sea of Japan offer an abundance of seafood that can be tasted on the spot or brought home in dried or smoked form. Yet it is the rich culture of the local indigenous peoples which provides the largest selection of national souvenirs.

If you’re looking for an original gift, traditional Nanai slippers are comfortable and warm. Sewn from leather or fabric and decorated in a bright, colorful style before being trimmed with fur, they make the perfect house shoes in winter. Traditional decorations include amulets which are made from animal bones, fur or fabrics and decorated with ribbons and colored beads.

Standard souvenirs like plates, magnets, mugs and flasks stamped with images of Khabarovsk or its coat of arms can be purchased in souvenir shops, which are mostly located downtown and at the airport and railway station.
