Geneva Christmas Walk & Holiday House Tour

Fox Valley Magazine

Tradition and surprise. It wouldn’t be Christmas without them. And Geneva’s Christmas Walk and House Tour offer both.

Friday evening, December 3 begins at 6 pm with Graham’s Chocolates First Candy Cane of the season being presented with great fanfare followed by the arrival of Santa Lucia, the Swedish symbol of the season, who will offer Swedish cookies to merry-makers.  The Christmas Tree is lit and the Courthouse lawn becomes aglow.  The young and young at heart will wait with anticipation as Santa Claus arrives. Santa will open his home for visits from excited children while All Chocolate Kitchen recreates their record-breaking candy cane.

Serenaded by carolers, families stroll Geneva’s historic marketplace, nibbling on fresh-roasted chestnuts, and dodging into brightly lit shops and restaurants along the way.

Those who aren’t downtown, might be touring holiday-decked homes. The Holiday House Tour (Dec. 3; 10 am-8 pm & Dec. 4; 10 am-5 pm) also another tradition, but thanks to the diversity of homes and the creativity of local designers, it’s filled with unexpected treats.

The Farmhouse:  Situated in a friendly neighborhood, a luminary lit path leads you to one of the many entrances for this 5000 square foot home.  Hospitality and cheerfulness are the first impressions you feel upon entering the 2018 house.  This 4-bedroom home is so much more than a farmhouse, it is where memories happen, and stories begin.

Festively decorated by Heinz Brothers Greenhouse Garden Center (630.377.6288, https://heinzbrothers.com ) with contributor Little Red Barn Door (630.402.0072, https://littleredbarndoor.com )

Architectural Beauty: Towering trees create a secluded garden for this 6000 plus square foot home; that originally had a railroad trestle running through the property.  Built in 2006, a touch of Tuscany can be found throughout this five-bedroom, seven-bathroom home.  The front doors, with wrought iron insets, welcome you inside.

Festively decorated by Haven Interiors Studio (630.402.0444, haveninteriorsltd.com) and Platt Hill Nursery (630.529.9394, www.platthillnursery.com )

Custom Home: This home defines the phrase “great curb appeal”.  Looking at this 2015 home from the street, you begin to anticipate a creative and modern interior.  Brown paned windows glisten in the December sun.  Warm wooden beams surround the covered porch where you can rock away any worries night or day.

Festively decorated by Haven Design Group (HDG) (773.220.2501 havendesigngroup.com) and Plandscape ( 630.365.2558 ,  plandscapeinc.com )

Captivating Ranch: This captivating ranch home was built in 1954.  In 2015 the homeowners fully renovated and redesigned this 3100 square foot home to its present beauty.  Holiday adornment decking the front door gives hint of the amazement that lies inside.

Festively decorated by Geneva Design House by Strawflower (630.232.7141, https://genevadesignhouse.com )

Mid-Century Charmer : In a highly desirable neighborhood, where most of the homes were built in the 50s & 60s, this mid-century ranch is no wallflower.   Bought by the homeowners in 2018, they had a vision to delight the eye and fire the imagination, by restoring it back to its 1962 splendor…. with present-day conveniences.  Walking through the bright orange door, you know this house will be anything but “square”.

Festively decorated by Gatherings by Design (630.880.8792,  https://Gatheringsbydesign.net  ) and Plandscape ( 630.365.2558 ,  plandscapeinc.com )

The Geneva Chamber of Commerce’s Christmas Walk and Holiday House Tour will take place Dec. 1 and 2.

According to a news release from the Chamber, festivities begin at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, with Bob’s Candy Cane Parade and Graham’s Chocolates’ first candy cane of the season being presented with great fanfare, followed by the arrival of Santa Lucia – the Swedish symbol of the season – who will offer Swedish cookies to merrymakers.

Reservations to visit Santa at his home at 10 S. Third St. in Geneva can be made at genevachamber.com . Cost is $10 for a time slot.

While serenaded by carolers, families can stroll Geneva’s historic marketplace, nibble on fresh-roasted chestnuts and dodge into brightly lit shops and restaurants, according to the release.

The Holiday House Tour is from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 1 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 2. The house tour includes:

Unique standout : This 16-year-old home radiates friendliness and hospitality. At 4,500 square feet, it was built in 2007 by Shodeen Builders and the homeowners are one of the few original families still in the neighborhood, according to the release. The simplicity of the colors and lines complement the strong pillars, fun furnishings and unique windows, bringing a wow factor to the home. In 2019, the family remodeled the kitchen, master bath, stairs and trim in the foyer, making it a truly livable space for the family of six. The home is being decorated by Heinz Brothers Greenhouse Garden Center.

Exquisite estate : This 7,700-square-foot, seven-bedroom, 4.5-bath, southern charm-inspired home was built in 2003 by Havlicek Builders. It is overflowing with craftsmanship including detailed trim, cherry hardwood floors, moldings and many upgrades throughout the house. Twenty years of memories fill the walls and shelves. The home is being decorated by Little Red Barn Door and Plandscape.

Historic gem : This home was built in 1857 and at more than 160 years old, the craftsmanship is a testament to the past. The cottage, with its charming exterior and a history steeped in nostalgia, was an ideal choice for the owners to buy and create a short-term rental. The home is being decorated by Farmdog Flowers and Fox Valley Lighting.

Cozy cottage : Once upon a time in a small, picturesque town, nestled amid mature trees and steps away from a tranquil river, stood a beautiful cottage with Tudor-inspired architecture. This home, at just more than 2,500 square feet, was built by Hogan Design & Construction in 2021. The home is being decorated by 610 Home and Plandscape.

Custom home : Spectacular light graces this beautiful home that was made for entertaining and built in 2022 by Augustine Builders. A standout feature, the rain chain on the cedar columns allows for a breathtaking show of ice and rain. While it is 3,650 square feet, the family lovingly has added their personalities to make it a cozy home, including the photography talents of their son that are found in the foyer. The homeowners designed both the architectural and interior design plans. A color palette in the front, where one will see white with muted colors, differs from the black-and-white look in the back. The home is being decorated by Intentional Spaces and Lightville.

Contributors include Crystal Bride, Inluro, The Cottage Geneva, The Gift Box and The Little Traveler.

Tickets, which include a holiday tea and a special treat from Scentcerely Yours (while supplies last), are $38. Proceeds are used to decorate Geneva for the holiday season.

The event may sell out.

First visit to this event today and never again. $38 to see 5 houses is the program with tea and cookies at a church. Visited one mediocre house that we toured in 4-5 minutes with the majority of that time taking off our shoes carrying them through the small first floor and putting them back on as we left. It was more of an advertisement for the florist who provided the greenery (which was lovely). Next house, line around the block to get into another seemingly mediocre house so we decided not to wait. next house - street is closed off so you have to park along the shoulder (50+ cars) and walk across a busy street into the subdivision to find the house. apparently the neighbors don't want the traffic but accept the proceeds of the walk which goes towards decorating geneva. The cottage downtown had no parking for blocks. by now, we've 'toured' one house and spent alot of time driving but seen nothing. save your money / donate it to a worthy cause but don't waste it on this house walk. so not worth it.

I have attended the Christmas House Tour for many years. This years was the worst, terribly crowded. Horribly long long lines. Frustrating.

For my 500th review, I'd hoped to talk about something I love - an amazing restaurant, a super cool place to visit, a neat attraction. But unfortunately, I'm going to write about the Geneva Christmas Walk & House Tour, a magnificent disappointment sure to suck the holiday spirit right out of you. Upon reading the description of the event, my wife and I thought this would be something right up our alley. We love architecture, home design and who doesn't love seeing a house decorated to the nines for Christmas? We arrived in Geneva around 1 p.m., sure there would be plenty of time to see all the houses on the Walk. Reality sunk in when we approached the first house and saw a line wrapped two-blocks' long around the neighborhood. We kept driving and found the southern-most house on the tour. The line here was shorter when we arrived, so we decided to start there instead. It was cold, as our winter has been. The temperature was below freezing, but the line felt like it was moving quickly. It took about a half hour for us to make our way inside. I guess that wasn't too bad. Maybe we wouldn't get to see all the houses on the tour, but we'd still get to see most of them. The house was done in the Frank Lloyd Wright style. Very prairie-style in its inspiration. But it was really lacking in the Christmas spirit. There was a small tree in the living room, and a tiny one on one of the countertops. Beyond that, maybe a bow or two here and there? It was quite the disappointment. The tour guide stopped us just outside the music room to give a speech about a fan gifted to the family from the sister's visit to China. That elicited a lot of eye rolls from the group in front of us, and admittedly, having traveled to Asia ourselves, my wife and I weren't exactly impressed either. This house was a total let down so after taking about 2 minutes to walk through the main floor (which was the only part we were allowed to go through) we left with kind of a "That's it?" feeling overall. House #2 looked like the wait time had climbed to more than two hours based on the size of the line, so we ended up completely skipping that one afraid we'd barely make it through before the event ended. We made our way to a third house closer to the center of the downtown area. We stood in the line for about an hour with our not-so nearest and dearest, who seemed to be having a much greater time than we were. But once inside, the decorations were sparse, but somewhat better than the first. But the tour guides again were more focused on telling everyone about the recent renovations to the house than focusing on the decorations. Maybe that was our problem. We just expected too much. We were less interested in the remodeling than we were in getting into the Christmas spirit. If we wanted to hear all about that sort of thing we'd simply call a realtor and ask them to tour us around. After another hour and a half spent waiting to get inside and ultimately touring the home, which was crowded and slow because you are packed in like sardines with 100 of your closest (or not so close) friends. Overall, we found this event completely disappointing. It was clear that too many tickets had been sold based on the ridiculous lines. There was absolutely no way anyone could have seen all the houses in one afternoon. You would have to begin your tour as soon as the homes opened for the day. And the exorbitant fee left us feeling not only disappointed, but swindled as well. The biggest joke on us was the large print on the program that read NO REFUNDS. No problem. Never again. Don't waste your money or your time.

Photo of Alex A.

Roasted chestnuts, live music (everywhere, mind you), chocolate, shopping (for the ladies of course), live nativity, carolers, and the list goes on. Bring your family, bring your friends, the Christmas spirit will not end...

Photo of Leslie S.

Okay, I admit it. I am a noisy person who buys tickets to the House Tour every year not to see the holiday decorations, but to see how other people live and decorate their homes. I love seeing their gourmet kitchens and remodeled basements! I get giddy when I see built-in cabinets and impressive, stone fireplaces! The House Tour is like walking through a Pottery Barn catalog or a Crate and Barrel photo shoot. It is the highlight of my December. For those who don't know, the House Tour is usually held the first weekend of December. Five Geneva homes are selected each year, and these homes are decorated by local designs and/or florists for the holidays. Other people then have the opportunity to walk through these homes, and admire the decor. The tour is a bit pricey ($30 per person), and can get crowded (you can wait outside a house for 25 minutes or more), which may be a deterrent for some. Your admission includes a "tea" at the Congregational Church, but I find the experience of sitting in a musty, dark church basement, sipping a cup of Lipton tea, to be a bit depressing. There's so much to see in the houses themselves, you're not really missing out by skipping the tea. For me, in fact, there is only one problem with the House Tour: it is extremely slanted toward the part of Geneva that is east of Randall Road (apparently those of us who live west of Randall are not really part of Geneva), and west of the river. I cannot tell you how much it irks me that the tour does not extend all over Geneva. The House Tour is also part of the Christmas Walk, which typically kicks off on the first Friday in December. That evening, Saint Lucia visits Geneva by horse-drawn carriage, and Santa and/or the mayor lights the large Christmas tree in front of the courthouse. The kids can visit Santa in his little house on Third Street, and the whole family can listen to carolers. It's a very nice experience, and one I would highly recommend, regardless of whether you decide to do the House Tour as well.

The Christmas season in Geneva will move into high gear on Friday with the beginning of a two-day holiday house tour and the annual Christmas Walk.

Beginning at 10 a.m. both Friday and Saturday, a ticketed-only house tour of five homes in Geneva will include two within the historic district, two large homes on either side of the city as well as a townhouse near Fisher Farms.

Communications director for the Geneva Chamber of Commerce Laura Rush said the house tour dates back more than 40 years.

“Those with tickets get to visit five homes in Geneva that are professionally decorated for the holidays,” Rush said. “It is a self-guided tour and people can do them in any order. Once people arrive, there are hosts inside that can tell you about highlights of the home.”

Rush said the house tour was taken over by the Chamber back in the 1980s and that part of the funds raised from ticket sales are used to help defray the costs of the Christmas Walk in downtown Geneva, which kicks off Friday at 6 p.m. and will include the arrival of Santa Lucia who lights the Great Tree, the arrival of Santa Claus, strolling carolers, a live nativity, special offerings from Geneva merchants and more.

The house tour was first run by a women’s group from a local hospital, followed by the Geneva Garden Club before the Chamber of Commerce took it over.

The house tour used to include four homes when it first started and grew to five, a number that Rush said “seems to be enough in terms of getting people around.”

This year, the tour includes Ald. Michael Bruno’s house in the city’s historic district.

“Five is doable. If we added another house, I think it would be hard for people to do that in a decent time period,” Rush said. “People don’t want to do it for eight hours. Since we took this over, we have probably taken it more to the next level … and it’s very popular. We have sold out in the past and tickets are flying out the door.”

The popularity of the tour, Rush said, is partly due to it being a tradition.

“This is my 13th house tour and we have a database of people that come and we see not only returnees but lots of new people,” she said.

She said the event “did pretty well” during the pandemic, and should be even more popular this year.

“I think people are ready for normalcy and are ready to kick-off Christmas,” she said.

A press release from the Chamber of Commerce said that “homes can be visited in any order, and there is no photography, videography, food, drink or pets allowed in homes.”

House tour tickets are $38 per person. The homes will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Homes may be visited over two days, but each home may only be visited once.

The ticket price includes a traditional tea served at First Congregational Church at 327 Hamilton St. and a treat from Scentcerely Yours while supplies last. Tea is served from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Tickets can be purchased online or by calling the Chamber of Commerce office at 630-232-6060 or by going to the Chamber office at 8 S. Third St. in Geneva. Tickets can be picked up at the Geneva Chamber of Commerce until 3 p.m. Thursday. After that, they will be available at Little Red Barn Door, 21 S. Third St. in Geneva, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.
