This chapter examines the sustainable homestay tourism and its prospects in the Uttarakhand Himalaya. Data on homestay facilities—registered units, total rooms and total beds at the district level, from 2017 to 2019, were gathered from secondary sources mainly from the UTDB, Dehradun. The income earned from homestay tourism and change in the homestay facilities was analyzed. The homestay facilities in urban and rural areas were separately discussed. The study reveals that the present status of the homestay facilities is very less however its potential is high. It has been observed that the development of homestay tourism in the Uttarakhand Himalaya will generate income, augment employment, and enhance rural livelihoods. This study suggests that the homestay facilities can be provided to the tourists/pilgrims in the tourists’ places/pilgrimages, mainly along the trekking routes, which are leading to the major highland pilgrimages and natural locales.

The Tourism sector is a key driver for socio-economic growth in most rural communities in Africa. In Kenya, tourism as an industry is the second highest foreign exchange earner after agriculture and accounts for 10 percent Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Homestay Tourism is a vital subsector of the Kenyan Tourism and has been promoted to diversify its products base, provide availability of beds or accommodation in rural areas, to empower the local communities economically, and enhance the quality of life of local hosts. However, little empirical evidence exists to ascertain motivations that sway homestay owners in rural areas of Kenya to host foreign visitors in their homes. The focus of the study aims to explore and describe primary motivational factors for homestay providers to offer such services, problems, and challenges encountered during service delivery within Shompole - Maasai Community of Kenya. This qualitative study used semi-structured and open-ended questionnaires for face to face interviews with 27 respondents in three out of five villages in Shompole Group Ranch. Findings of the study will assist the County and National governments, homestay providers, tourism planners and stakeholders in developing quality homestay products, marketing and ensure compliance with set guidelines for all players in the sector.

Community-based homestay is one of the growing rural tourism enterprises. It has been a strong support for fostering ecotourism around the globe by uplift ing the local community. Th e present study was carried in Amaltari Madhawarti Homestay in the Nawalpur District of Nepal. Th e main aim of this study was to assess the environmental impacts of community-based homestay tourism.Twenty-four houses running homestays and same number of houses without homestay operationwere surveyed and representative of the management committee were interviewed in this study. Solid waste production in these 24 homestays was quantifi ed. Proper awareness towards waste management reduces the threat to environmental purity. Further, the role of proper waste management, energy use, and water use becomes a great asset to develop a sound ecotourism around homestays. Socioeconomic benefi ts were received by the homestay in the form of increased income and preserved culture. People were able to make money to upgrade their living standard from their culture, hospitality, foods, and costumes. Th is boost in the economy had reduced dependence on natural resources andincreased forest areaand movement of wild animals.

This paper discusses the transformation of indigenous culture and the promotion of rural tourism development towards modernisation from traditional. Rural tourism is a dominant factor in promoting local cultures and heritages along with upgrading local people's lifestyles. This paper also examines rural tourism development and the existing challenges in Naya Gaon. It explores the potentiality of homestay tourism, which is significantly promoting local people's livelihoods. To better understand the present situation of the village, this study employed mixed methods: qualitative and quantitative. Nevertheless, ethnography as a prior research technique was used for data collection. This technique helped explore the formerly existing local culture, which was transforming into a new model. It also shows that homestay tourism has supported Tharus in the improvement of their socioeconomic status and daily habits. In addition, it has enhanced indigenous knowledge and skills to sustain local products. Tharu women have been more empowered both socially and economically. Most noticeably, residents are getting rid of Kamaiyas (Bonded Labourers) and Sukumbashi (Slums).

Homestay program is one of key strategies for enhancing rural income and biodiversity conservation. In this study, we assessed the socio-economic and environmental outcomes of a community managed homestay program in Amaltari village of Nawalparasi, Nepal by collecting household level data from the 21 households. We interviewed visitors (n=60) to assess their satisfaction level with the services they are offered. Homestay income was found to have contributed more to the poor households than to the richer ones. Social contributions included increase in community pride, women empowerment and improved community relationship. The contribution in environmental sector was mainly the increase in environmental education and plantation activities. Visitors (n=60) were more satisfied with the hospitality and culture and least satisfied with the available means of communication. Linear regression models did not show any significant effect of age, sex and prior experience of visitors with homest...

TRULY MALAYSIA ROADSHOW TO MOSCOW, TASHKENT, ALMATY & ISTANBUL RECONNECT TOURISTS TO MALAYSIA
MOSCOW, 14 September 2022 – Tourism Malaysia through its overseas offices in Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Turkey is organising a Truly Malaysia Roadshow , taking place from 12 th to 20 th September 2022. The roadshow begins in Moscow, followed by Tashkent, Almaty, and Istanbul.
Led by Mr. Iskandar Mirza Mohd Yusof, Acting Deputy Director General (Planning) of Tourism Malaysia, the Malaysian delegation consists of travel operators, hoteliers, state tourism bodies, and educational tourism industry players. The roadshow provides a platform for both Malaysian sellers and local buyers to participate in business-to-business (B2B) sessions and product presentations to revive, reconnect and create new partnerships in enhancing opportunities to boost tourist arrivals to Malaysia.
“One of the biggest draws is Malaysia's racial and cultural diversity, resulting in a mixed yet harmonious legacy that manifests itself in our festivals, architecture, clothing, language, cuisine, and other aspects of daily life,” said Mr. Iskandar Mirza, during the first session in Moscow.
“While the past two years have been tremendously challenging for us, we are glad to share that Malaysia has surpassed our initial target of 2 million international tourist arrivals since the reopening of our international borders. We have since revised our target of welcoming 9.2 million international tourist arrivals with RM 26.8 billion in tourism receipts for this year,” he added.
Malaysia has relaxed the entry procedures for fully-vaccinated travellers without requirements to undergo quarantine or pre-departure and on-arrival COVID-19 tests. Travel insurance is also not a prerequisite for foreigners entering Malaysia, and inbound travellers no longer need to fill in the Traveler’s Card on the country’s contact tracing app, MySejahtera.

The rate of homestay-including breakfast was average 1200 INR/night/roomin urban areas whereas it was INR 1000/night/room in rural areas. In 2017, the total income from homestay tourism in urban areas was less than INR 500 thousand; it increased to INR 0.6 million in 2018 and 1.6 million in 2019.
Drawing on postcolonial critiques of tourism, post-development perspectives that highlight the professionalisation of the development industry and literature exploring the historical legacy of colonialism and modernisation in Peru, this thesis proposes that homestay tourism needs to consider more deeply the assumptions on which it trades.
