Victoria Harbour

Welcome to Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a city of contrasts, where one of Asia’s biggest and tallest concrete jungles shares space with mountainous terrain, lush islands and pristine beaches, and traditional Cantonese culture has been infused with British influences. There’s a lot to take in, so come along as we explore some of the city’s big stars and hidden gems.

Mong Kok

The familiar side of the city

The Hong Kong of many a Hollywood movie looks a lot like Mong Kok, the city’s most densely populated, neon-lit neighborhood.

The Star Ferry

Go for a ride

The Star Ferry has been taking passengers across Victoria Harbour between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon since 1888. While it’s now possible to cross over by car or subway, thanks to a series of modern tunnels, the ferry remains a favorite, especially for first time visitors. There’s no better place to soak up the views of Hong Kong’s two skylines.

Explore : This is how to take in the beauty and intrigue of Hong Kong

A Symphony of Lights

Light up the night

Victoria Harbour makes an impressive sight anytime, but it really dazzles after dark during the nightly A Symphony of Lights multimedia show. This light show has been illuminating the city’s twin skylines since 2004 and remains one of its most beloved (and free) attractions.

Night market

Retail paradise

Hong Kong is a shopper’s delight, and no retail therapy experience in the city would be complete without a visit to a night market. The neighborhood of Mong Kok is considered one of the largest outdoor shopping areas in the city, home to the Ladies Market, Flower Market, Bird Market and Goldfish Market.

Monster Building

A city of 7 million

Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated cities on earth, particularly in the Kowloon area. The immensity of the city’s population is evident at this series of five interconnected residential towers, known collectively as the Monster Building.

Hong Kong streetcar

Historic streetcars of Hong Kong Island

One of the best ways (or at least the most fun) to get around Hong Kong Island is aboard the historic double decker trams. These streetcars have been navigating the city for more than a century, passing through Wan Chai, Happy Valley, Causeway Bay and North Point.

The view from Victoria Peak

On top of the world

Visiting the top of Victoria Peak to gaze down on the toothy skyscrapers has become a quintessential Hong Kong experience. The highest point on the island is accessible via the Peak Tram, among the world’s steepest funicular railways.

Cable Cars

Choose your own (cable car) adventure

Fans of the cable car as a way to snag a bird’s eye view of a city are in luck. Hong Kong has two. The Ngong Ping 360 cable car on Lantau Island takes visitors to the Tian Tan Buddha and Po Lin Monastery , while the Ocean Park cable car (pictured) shuttles visitors between the Waterfront and Summit areas of the park.

Bird Garden

Yuen Po Street Bird Garden

Hong Kong looks like an ultramodern city by its skyline, but walk its streets, and you’ll find little pockets of tradition dating back centuries. One such place is the Yuen Po Street Bird Garden , where songbird enthusiasts gather with their finely feathered friends. Vendors lining the park specialize in exotic birds and intricate bamboo cages.

Po Lin Monastery

A religious medley

Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism coexist in Hong Kong, and a majority of residents identify with “Chinese folk religions” rather than a specific creed. Among the many religious buildings scattered across the city is Po Lin Monastery, one of Hong Kong’s most important Buddhist structures.

Tai Lam Country Park

Abundant outdoor adventure

Outdoor adventure is always close at hand in Hong Kong, particularly within the sprawling Tai Lam Country Park. A highlight of the park is the Tai Lam Chung Reservoir, also known as the Thousand Island Lake, where hikers and bikers come to enjoy the numerous trails.

Wisdom Path

Take a walk on the spiritual side

Lantau Island, the largest island in Hong Kong, offers a blend of stunning natural scenery and cultural appeal. Nowhere is this marriage more evident than on the Wisdom Path, an infinity-shaped pattern of 38 wooden monuments etched with verses from the Heart Sutra (a prayer used in Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism alike). Walkers along the path enjoy stellar views of the South China Sea.

Tai Long Wan Bay

Sun, sand and sea

Those unfamiliar with Hong Kong might not realize that the mega metropolis is also home to some spectacular white sand beaches. Some of the best can be found along Tai Long Wan Bay, an area known for its remote stretches of sand and excellent surfing conditions.

Explore : How to take your Hong Kong adventure to the next level

Sai Wan Swimming Shed

Hong Kong's not-so-secret swimming spot

Hong Kongers have been coming to the Sai Wan Swimming Shed to cool off with a dip in the sea for years. More recently, the Instagram crowd has discovered this scenic spot, comprising a wooden platform and staircase leading into the sea. On a clear day, you can see the skyscrapers of central Hong Kong in the distance.

Hungry Ghost Festival

A festival steeped in tradition

There’s almost always a festival happening somewhere in Hong Kong, and many showcase the city’s living culture. One of the most visually interesting events is the annual Hungry Ghost Festival. Based on the traditional practice of ancestor worship, this festival features Chinese opera performances, roadside fires for burning offerings and a flurry of activity in local temples.

Dragon Boat Festival

A colorful event with a dark history

The history of dragon boat racing dates back more than 2,000 years, when a man by the name of Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Mi Lo River in Mainland China in protest against corrupt rulers at the time. According to legend, local townspeople beat drums and threw rice dumplings into the water to keep fish from eating his body. Festivals around the globe, including this one in Hong Kong, commemorate the day with dragon boat races. Teams of 20 to 22 paddlers, often dressed in outlandish costumes, race elaborate boats to the beat of drums.

Sai Kung Seafood Street

Seafood, Canton style

Central Hong Kong is surrounded by numerous smaller communities and fishing villages. Sai Kung , nicknamed “Hong Kong’s back garden,” is best known for its seafood restaurants, where the fresh ingredients sit on display outside, lending it an aquarium-like feel.

Food Culture : Why salted fish fried rice has a cult following in Hong Kong

Tai O

Life on the water

Another of these villages, Tao O, is built entirely on stilts. The community is home to the Tanka ethnic minority, who’ve fished the tidal flats of Lantau Island for generations. While only a short bus ride from the Hong Kong MTR, Tai O feels worlds away.

Big Buddha

Hong Kong's giant Buddha

There’s nothing ancient about the Tian Tan Buddha statue — it was built in the early 1990s — but that doesn’t make it any less impressive. This Lantau Island landmark stands 112 feet tall, facing north toward the mainland. Pilgrims and visitors can get a closer look by climbing the 268 steps to the base of the statue.

Tsing Ma Bridge

Move over, Golden Gate

The imposing Tsing Ma Bridge connects Lantau Island with the rest of Hong Kong and is the longest suspension bridge in the world that carries both rail and road traffic. A viewing platform on Tsing Yi Island offers the best views of the bridge and the perfect perch for photographing it.

Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB)

Country: Hong Kong, China

Website: http://www.discoverhongkong.com

The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) is a government-subvented body tasked to market and promote Hong Kong as a travel destination worldwide and to enhance visitors' experience once they arrive.

Traveling to Hong Kong? Here’s what you need to know.

As protests in this Asian megacity stretch into their fourth month, here’s how tourism is being affected.

Protests in Hong Kong have been dominating video clips and newsfeeds since June 9, when the Hong Kong government proposed a bill that would allow China to extradite fugitives to the mainland. Since then, initially peaceful weekly protests have grown in size, encompassing demands for political self-determination and personal autonomy, and have become increasingly agitated. On October 1, China’s National Day holiday, a protester was shot during one confrontation. ( See how Hong Kong’s complex history explains its current crisis with China. )

“Visitor safety is of the utmost importance for us,” said Hong Kong Tourism Board PR representative Brea Burkholz. “But it’s a safe and welcoming city, and there has been no violence or crime committed against tourists.”

A website provides regular updates, and the tourist board has a chat room for visitors to connect directly with representatives, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily (Hong Kong Standard Time). “We’re doing due diligence with airline, hotel, and tour partners to confirm they are able to provide assistance in the event of travel disruptions,” said Burkholz.

Still, in August, Hong Kong tourist arrivals fell 40 percent, according to Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po, the largest drop since the SARS outbreak in 2003. What’s it really like to visit there now?

People attend a protest in the Western District of Hong Kong on August 4, 2019, in the latest opposition to a planned extradition law that has evolved into a wider movement for democratic reforms.

a protest message in Hong Kong

Protesters leave a message in the Mong Kok district of Hong Kong.

I had the opportunity to find out during a 14-hour layover at Chek Lap Kok Airport two weeks ago. Before heading out to the city, I checked the latest update for Hong Kong on the U.S. State Department website (“exercise increased caution”), then beelined to a tourism booth in the arrivals area.

Any areas I should avoid today? I asked.

“The protests are always on the weekends,” she told me. “But let me check the schedule to make sure. We have informed sources who tell us what will be happening each day.”

She scrolled through texts on her phone. “Hmm, the University of Technology,” she said. “Don’t go there. And if you want to go to the Peak Tram, go now, because there is a protest scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Chater Garden.”

“But”—she provided a caveat—“there are always last-minute changes.”

On the surface, everything seemed as it was on my last visit to Hong Kong six months ago. A commute across the harbor aboard the Star Ferry was still an intoxicating ride. The venerable street cars navigating Hong Kong Island continued to provide a thrill. But today, as protests neared their fourth month and continued to upend the city, it was easier to get a seat on the otherwise packed trams. They even seemed to move a little faster, less encumbered by the usual pokey traffic in Central , the city’s main business district. ( See the complex history of Hong Kong, visualized. )

My first stop: Man Mo Temple . The Taoist place of worship is dedicated to the god of literature and the god of war—a good place for me to start—and was undergoing restoration work. But the usual crowd of tourists was missing.

the inside the Man Mo Temple in the Sheung Wan neighborhood in Hong Kong

Since protests started in June, visitor numbers to places such as Man Mo Temple, in Hong Kong’s traditional Sheung Wan neighborhood, have decreased.

I strolled along Hollywood Road east to Lan Fong Yuen, a café that is said to have invented “silk stocking milk tea”—black tea passed through long, pantyhose-like nets. Nearly every seat in the cramped café was taken, and I was shown to a table with a Korean mother and adult daughter who were busy capturing their breakfast on cameras.

At the next table, a group of upbeat twenty-somethings visiting from the Philippines eagerly dug into their breakfast. Any hesitations about traveling to Hong Kong, I asked them?

“No,” said one young man. “Danger is everywhere.”

At the Zoological and Botanical Gardens , I was eerily alone with the meerkats and the lemurs—alone, except for a half-dozen or more groundskeepers focused on keeping the fountains and aviaries immaculate, despite a dearth of visitors.

The wait for a ride on the Peak Tram , the 131-year-old funicular that scales Victoria Peak, can sometimes exceed two hours. I found no line at all; the funicular departed barely half-full. The spectacular harbor view at the summit confirmed why visitors are usually willing to brave a lengthy queue. ( See photos of Hong Kong’s surprising green spaces. )

the inside of the Peak Tram in Hong Kong

The Peak Tram has been ferrying visitors from Central district up Victoria Peak since 1888.

In Kowloon , the mainland side of Hong Kong, a Viking cruise ship was parked at Harbour City Ocean Terminal. A dozen passengers fresh from the airport were queueing for embarkation aboard Viking Orion for a voyage headed to Beijing . The mostly American passengers seemed nonplussed by protests that had taken place just blocks from the port.

“We first came here 32 years ago,” said one passenger. “This is such a fabulous city, and everything I was reading in the last few weeks told me we would be safe on our stopover here.”

“The protests are on weekends,” his wife added. “So we weren’t too worried coming through during the week.” ( Learn the top 10 things to do in Hong Kong. )

After a day of wandering, I hadn’t met any Hongkongers who shared sharp opinions of the protests, one way or the other. There was mostly a feeling of frustration and resignation. A mother strolling her baby along the waterfront told me her heart is with the protesters and she hopes they can prevail without bloodshed.

protestors at the Peak in Hong Kong

Demonstrators hold up mobile phones as they form a human chain at the Peak, a popular tourist spot in Hong Kong, on September 13, 2019.

“But I don’t know how long this can continue,” she said. “Both sides are standing quite firm, and I don’t see much compromise.”

Soon it was time to make my way back towards the airport and my evening flight. I entered an MTR subway station beneath one of Hong Kong’s most storied hotels, The Peninsula . Here, the writing is on the walls: Post-It notes canvass one corridor with anonymous words of support for the protesters; other yellow squares are used to recreate iconic photographic images.

Even during the week, Hong Kong’s protest lives on, quietly. But so does life for Hongkongers.

Travel statistics report published by the tourism board was one of the important sources that attraction managers used to plan for marketing strategies. However, only a limited number of famous attractions were involved in such reports, therefore rare information was gathered for 2nd or 3rd tier attractions, such as temples. These small attractions were kept away from many tourists’ knowledge or travel plan so that it is also a difficulty to explore their visit behaviors. Fortunately, social media sites have been rapidly developed and widely used in our lives, to fill this blank with a large number of active users, who shared their travel experiences by writing textual comments and uploading travel photos. This provides scholars and managers with opportunities to understand tourists’ behaviors and the potential attractions they are interested in, by analyzing the photos they uploaded and shared online. In this paper, we report a study of extracting geotagged photos uploaded by tourists to one of the popular social media sites, Flickr, for tourists’ visit and sharing behavior analysis of Hong Kong temples. The results indicate four popular temples that attracted most tourists taking photos. The behavior analysis shows the difference preferences of tourists from various locations and the trend changes of their visits in the past 5 years.
