Exceptionally priced for a clean, modern and well-equipped room (Elemis products and a coffee machine!). Sky Bar and restaurant were lovely.

Tour an Epic LA Mansion With Eclectic, Hotel-Like Touches

By Alia Akkam

Photography by James McDonald

Moody visuals from Blade Runner, the 1982 sci-fi noir depicting a dystopian 2019 Los Angeles, were among the inspirations guiding AD100 talent Bryan O’Sullivan ’s design of a Bel Air manse. In their brief, the clients, financier Adam Levinson and his wife, Brittany, noted that the film encapsulated their eclectic tastes; O’Sullivan, founder of his eponymous London and New York studio and author of the forthcoming A New Glamour from Rizzoli, fittingly responded with cinematic interiors. The Levinsons, he points out, “are not afraid of color and like metallic finishes, which sit quite nicely with the architecture. It was a blank canvas.”

After snagging the 30,000-square-foot, midcentury-redolent new-build developed by Bulli , Plus Development , and PC Construction , the couple, although smitten with the sprawling layout, craved a more intimate atmosphere in which to raise their three children, and turned to O’Sullivan and his team to enliven the rooms with warm, tactile layers.

The designer reimagined the vast spaces as more human-scale ones by employing a series of small interventions. Consider the archway, a grand arrival just past the exterior’s Daniel Arsham Pikachu sculpture and ceramic artist Tony Marsh’s pillars, heightened by a melding of burl walnut veneer, Calacatta Viola marble, and silver leaf. This art-filled “decompression zone,” as O’Sullivan puts it, was not part of the previous layout, but now gives visitors a chance to pause underneath Neal Feay’s shimmering aluminum portal before plunging deeper into the three-story residence.

Throughout, O’Sullivan showcases artworks from the Levinsons’ astonishing collection, built alongside advisor Joe Sheftel —including a Tracey Emin neon creation, Theaster Gates fire hose tapestry, and Josef Albers painting—forging a soulful, deeply personal narrative in the process.

“Our vision was to unify the existing structure with our family’s rhythm and lifestyle,” explains Brittany Levinson of the project. “We have a real love for art and wanted it to be central to the design of our home. One of the things that drew us to this house so much was the gallery-like feel of the double-height entry.”

The walls, wrapped in earthy Clayworks clay plasters, also provide continuity. The existing stone cladding was eradicated to make way for this textured alternative, just as the wood shutters were replaced with chic metallic screens and partition walls were installed to elicit an inviting sense of privacy. “It was cavernous before,” says O’Sullivan.

Swaths of automotive paint add a lustrous sheen, while the austere spiral staircase was revamped for a softer look. “It was black,” remembers O’Sullivan, “and we went for powder blue, so it’s more approachable. We also added timber capping to the glass balustrade to make it more homely.”

This element is one of Adam Levinson’s favorites too. “It brought an organic sensitivity of nature into a geometric and large, open space,” he says. “You literally feel yourself floating in a hilltop above Los Angeles with the floor-to-ceiling glass in front of you,” he says.

All rooms exude an air of elegance, yet are equally comfortable. Despite the presence of vintage items, the living room, with its curvilinear sofas and ensemble of tables, conjures a futuristic aura. It looks onto the swimming pool, with double-width, throne-reminiscent daybeds designed by Bryan O’Sullivan Studio, and mighty views.

Flowing from the kitchen and the family room is the informal dining area, which showcases the Harvest table from O’Sullivan’s inaugural furniture collection, a version inlaid with bespoke urban images—a skateboarder, a cop car, a donut—that evoke Los Angeles.

Upstairs, where the bedrooms are, the den contrasts the ground floor’s open-plan rooms. Dubbed the Pajama Lounge, it’s outfitted with oak paneling and a marble fireplace and has a cozy ambiance that also pervades the lower level.

Tapping into his expertise in the hospitality realm, here O’Sullivan crafted a red- and pink-toned bar and dimly lit speakeasy-style lounge enveloped in murals, both of which call to mind swank hotel lobbies. A full-fledged entertaining hub, there’s also a powder room graced by an Amani Lewis collage and a cinema complemented by whimsical concession cabinets, well-stocked with jars of candy for savoring alongside movies.

“It was a huge basement with no natural light,” recalls O’Sullivan. “We had to make it a place that people are going to want to spend time in.” Perhaps a place for the Levinsons to watch Blade Runner , and reflect on their design vision come to life.

Adjacent to the kitchen, with its blue lacquered cabinetry and Cipollino green marble island buoyed by a Sabine Marcelis resin pendant and custom chrome and leather stools, is an area for the family to gather. The Charles Zana sofa, covered in Holland & Sherry fabric, is joined by a walnut armchair draped in sheepskin, a striking hammered brass ceiling lamp from Galerie Meubles et Lumières, a platinum decorated Takuro Kuwata vase, and glazed ceramic and stainless-steel side tables by Bari Ziperstein and Lee Sisan, respectively.

1970s vibes permeate the living room, which mixes vintage pieces from the era like a glass and chrome François Monnet table and duo of Jacques Charpentier leather and steel lounge chairs with de Sede’s curving Snake sectional, Raphaël Navot’s Moon sofa for Domeau & Pérès, and artworks by Kouzo Takeuchi, Tatiana Trouvé, and Robert Irwin. Bolstering the room is an array of tables by Based Upon, Draga & Aurel, Bari Ziperstein, and Tron Meyer, as well as lighting from the Future Perfect and Monologue London. The Dieter Rams stereo for Braun and George Nakashima lamp perched on the Borsani table all add 1960s flourishes.

Bryan O’Sullivan Studio’s bespoke serpentine sofa, upholstered in a deep blue Brochier fabric, is the star of the secondary living room. It curves around Egg Collective’s asymmetrical-topped Isla coffee table, accessorized with a Georg Jensen tea set, and sits underneath a flamboyant brass and neon ceiling light from Locatelli Partners. Behind it is another standout from O’Sullivan and his team: a cantilevered leather and aluminum desk paired with a Maria Pergay chair from Demisch Danant and Anne Holtrop’s lamp for Maniera. They all mingle with Massimo Castagna’s platinum side table for Henge, grounded by two Ignazio Gardella reclining 1960s armchairs, and an antique side table that takes the form of a lily. Alessandro Mendini’s Cubo Sfera table lamp for Fidenza Vetraria and artworks by Fred Eversley, Lee Hun Chung, Peter Alexander, Jason Martin, and Cameron Martin round out the space.

10 Affordable and Nice Hotels in Paris in 2024

Sean Finelli Last Updated: April 24, 2024

Let’s face it, Paris is expensive. Getting to Paris is expensive, the food is expensive, getting around is expensive, and accommodation is expensive. That said, there are really nice hotels for around $200 per night in the center of Paris which I think is an attractive price for the most romantic city on Earth. Browse through our list of the most affordable and best value hotels in Paris.

Pro Tip: If you are looking for hotels in Paris you are likely planning a trip to Paris. If so, check out and bookmark our dedicated page on Paris with articles on the Louvre , Versailles , Eiffel Tower , and more!

10 Most Affordable and Nice Hotels in Paris

This is a list of some of my favorite hotels in Paris since they are all semi-affordable and clean. I’ve included recommendations in several arrondissements so you can pick and choose the area you prefer. Without further ado, my favorite affordable hotels in Paris when you’re traveling for work or on a budget, but want to stay somewhere nice!

Hotel Monte Cristo

Hotel Monte Cristo

€€€ | 4 Star | 5th Arr. | Exotic | Indoor Pool

Hotel Monte Cristo has a really cool middle-eastern vibe to it which makes it fun to stay at. The price is actually very good considering its central location, central style, and great reviews.

The hotel pool is likely large enough to do laps and also has a romantic setting which is the best of both worlds. The hotel location is central but not reasonably within walking distance to the Seine.

This location is right on the edge of the Latin Quarter which is full of great bars, restaurants, and things to do at night. It is also located to a few well-connected metro stations which can get you to the Eiffel Tower or other monuments.

Location, photos, and booking

Hôtel Du Haut Marais

hotel la tour facebook

€€ | 3 Star | Le Marais (kind of) | 3rd Arr.

This hotel is my “go-to” hotel for business trips. It offers a lot of space in a modern, but cool space right in the center of Paris. Clean beds that are comfortable with all the amenities you’d want and sometimes even more.

Some rooms have cool soaker tubs that work great for a romantic stay or after a long day of walking around Paris! The hotel claims “Le Marais” but is about a block outside the unofficial boundaries. That said, it is basically right there and the price is right. I’ll take it!

Privileged Access Eiffel Night Tour with Seine River Cruise

Sometimes the most amazing moments happen by chance. Other times, they are orchestrated by professionals. In this case, you’ll have an evening to remember as you cruise the Seine for an hour, sipping champagne and taking in the sites like Notre-Dame, the Louvre, and more. Afterwards, follow your guide past the long lines and take the elevator to the Eiffel Tower’s second floor for an unforgettable view.

Skip the Line Palace of Versailles and Gardens Tour from Paris

Versailles isn’t that difficult to get to by train, but why deal with the stress on your own? Our guide will meet you in central Paris, purchase your train tickets, and ensure you get off at the right stop in Versailles. With skip-the-line tickets, you’ll bypass the crowds and get right into this incredible palace as your guide explains the most incredible (and controversial) history of France’s favorite palace.

Hotel De Seine

Hotel De Seine

€€ | 3 Star | Saint Germain Des Prés | 6th Arr.

Hotel De Seine is in an amazing location with a great price. Very close to the Seine, hence the name, on the left bank (rive gauche).

It is right on the border of the Latin Quarter, who’s food scene I prefer over Le Marais, and walking distance to the Louvre, Notre Dame, Ile Saint Louie, and the Luxembourg Gardens. Love this location and the price.

Rooms are nice enough for me and some have mini-balconies with decent street views. They have a classic design that makes you feel like you are an aristocrat at a decent price.

  Location, photos, and booking

Hôtel Jeanne d’Arc Le Marais

Hotel Jeanne d'Arc

€€ | 3 Star | Le Marais | 4th Arr.

For a relatively inexpensive hotel, Hôtel Jeanne d’Arc is located in a great area, is clean and stylish. No, you won’t stay in a suite formerly occupied by Joséphine Bonaparte, but do you really need to?

Le Marais is very close to the two major Seine islands, the Louvre, Latin Quarter, and has a great food scene. I personally try and choose a new area each time I visit Paris, but would recommend Le Marais above all for first-time visitors to Paris.

Hotel de Flore

Hotel de Flore

€€ | 3 Star | Montmartre | 18th Arr.

Montmartre is a neighborhood known for three things. First, burlesque shows at the Moulin Rouge and other “adult” establishments. Second, amazing elevated views of Paris from Sacre-Cœur Basilica. Finally, a really cool local food scene.

This hotel is a clean and inexpensive option that puts you in a cool area with great access to central Paris.

 Location, photos, and booking

Hotel Eiffel Blomet

Hotel Eiffel Blomet

€€ | 4 Star | 15th Arr. | Indoor Pool

This is an incredible find for its location, price, and value. The indoor pool is most definitely built and design for health conscious travelers who want to get their morning laps in.

Beyond that, the price is extremely low for a 4 star hotel in the center of Paris with its caliber of reviews. I highly recommend this hotel for the budget conscious traveler who wants to get a lot from there money.

Les Jardins de Mademoiselle

hotel la tour facebook

€€€ | 4 Star | 15th Arr. | Trendy | Indoor Pool

Les Jardins de Mademoiselle is a cool hotel in the 15th arrondissement of Paris which is relatively close to the Eiffel Tower and Champ de Mars .

Unlike staying at the Ritz or Four Seasons , this hotel won’t cost you an arm and a leg and it has a nice indoor pool for your kids to swim in. It is not massive, but could possibly be large enough to do laps in. You may just have to do more than usual.

Hôtel & Spa La Belle Juliette

Hotel & Spa La Belle Juliette Affordable Hotel Paris

€€ | 4 Star | 6th Arr. | Clean & Basic | Indoor Pool

Another great find in terms of price, location, and ambiance. Hôtel & Spa La Belle Juliette has all the creature comforts you want and more. The hotel-style has youthful undertones and a positive feel. All-in-all, it is a clean and cool hotel with an indoor pool for a super-low price.

Turenne Le Marais

Turenne Le Marais

€€ | 3 Star | Le Marais | 4th Arr. | Modern

Comfortable hotel in great area for decent prices. You won’t find marble counters in your bathroom or large soaker tubs, but very clean hotel with good service in a perfect area.

Hôtel Madison

Hotel Madison

€€ | 4 Star | 6th Arr. | Classically French

Like many other hotels in this category, Hôtel Madison is located on the left bank or “rive gauche”. There are tons of nearby cafes, bars, and cool restaurants. You are also reasonably within walking distance of Notre Dame, the Louvre , the Luxembourg Gardens, and a short taxi from the Paris Catacombs .

All in all, this one of the hotel I am likely to consider for a stay in Paris due to it being comfortable, in a great location, and reasonably priced.

Australians grace kim and hannah green tied for lead in lpga tour’s jm eagle la championship.

LOS ANGELES – Grace Kim stumbled to a 5-over 76 on Saturday in the LPGA Tour’s JM Eagle LA Championship — and still held onto a share of the lead.

It was that kind of a day at Wilshire Country Club, the tree-lined layout made difficult by bumpy poa annua greens and tricky wind conditions.

Recommended Videos

“It’s tough for everyone today,” Kim said. “It was just one of those days. It’s just golf.”

Four strokes ahead entering the day after rounds of 64 and 66, Kim was tied with fellow Australian Hannah Green, the defending champion who saved par with a 12-footer on the par-3 18th for a 70. They were at 7-under 206.

“The putt that I made on 18 almost felt like I birdie,” Green said.

Maja Stark, playing alongside Kim in the final group, bogeyed the 18th for a 73.

“You know that you can’t take every missed putt too personally because that’s going to happen for everyone,” Stark said.

The Swede was a stroke back with Jin Hee Im, the South Korean player who had a back-nine 30 in a 63 for the best round of the day, and Germany's Esther Henseleit (71). Nasa Hataoka of Japan was 5 under after a 64.

Kim bogeyed the par-5 second hole and had a double bogey on the par-3 fourth. She also dropped shots on the par-4 10th and 16th holes.

“I tried to stay in the present of just the next shot, giving myself good chances,” said the 23-year-old Kim, The LOTTE Championship last year in Hawaii for her first LPGA Tour title. “I know I had a few three-putts in there, but just keeping my head in the game and not losing that shot focus.”

The 27-year-old Green rebounded from a 2-foot par miss on the par-4 17th with the par save on 18. After bogeying three of the last six holes on the front nine, she played a four-hole stretch on the back nine in 4 under. She eagled the par-5 13th and birdied 14 and 16, then missed the short putt on 17.

“I didn’t really have many full swings. Had a lot of half-shots in,” said Green, the winner in Singapore early last month for her fourth LPGA Tour title. “With the greens firming up and getting bouncy it kind of made it hard to completely trust that shot.”

Stark finished second last week outside Houston in The Chevron Championship, two strokes behind top-ranked Nelly Korda in the first major of the year. Korda withdrew Monday, a day after her record-tying fifth straight victory.

See inside a Boeing 727 salvaged from an aircraft 'graveyard' and converted into a lavish Airbnb that starts at $438 a night

  • An entrepreneur has converted a 56-year-old Boeing 727 into an Airbnb in Bristol, England.
  • Named PYTCHAir, the jet was bought without wings, engines, or a tail — but kept its lavish interior.
  • The Airbnb can host at least four people and is about $438 a night with a minimum two-night stay.

Insider Today

Most commercial airplanes end their life in aircraft "graveyards," where they are disassembled and discarded or recycled.

Some, however, are rescued by entrepreneurs and repurposed into everything from hotels and restaurants to dive sites and art installations.

The latest converted airplane is a 56-year-old Boeing 727 in Bristol, England, that's been repurposed as an Airbnb and is now owned by British-Australian businessman Johnny Palmer.

Known as PYTCHAir , the luxe jet is already getting bookings into May and June.

Palmer declined to share with BI the cost of the now colorfully painted aircraft but said he got a discount because the 727 didn't have wings, engines, or a tail.

With or without wings, the magic lives inside the plane, Palmer said. It has a lavish interior previously outfitted by an ultrawealthy owner. Palmer said he has since restored PYTCHAir into a livable space with a kitchen, bathrooms, and bedrooms.

"We've treated this as a restoration project rather than ripping everything out and changing it — and why would you?" he said. "It's beautiful; it's totally raw 1980s billionaire kitsch."

The Airbnb requires a minimum two-night stay and starts at 350 British pounds — or about $438 — a night, so at least $876 for a two-night stay.

PYTCHAir started life as a commercial jet flying for Japan Airlines and defunct German leisure carrier Hapag-Lloyd Flug between 1968 and 1981.

hotel la tour facebook

The Boeing 727 tri-jet is a rarity in the skies these days and is mostly used only by world militaries and cargo companies.

Iran Aseman Airlines was the last passenger carrier to operate a 727 when it flew two hours between the domestic cities of Zahedan and Tehran in 2019.

The plane was converted into a private jet in 1981 by an unknown owner. Palmer told BI the original cabin has an Arabian flare.

hotel la tour facebook

Palmer said the interior design, including some of the shapes used, suggested that a Saudi family might have originally outfitted the plane.

The Airbnb listing described the interior as having "walnut paneling, gold details, and crystals" that "adorn this exquisite space ideal for nights away."

The plane jumped to a few more ultrawealthy owners before ending up wingless in a scrapyard in England, where Palmer bought it.

hotel la tour facebook

The aircraft, which was just a fuselage, was acquired from Cotswold Airport in Kemble, England. The on-site "boneyard" breaks down old airliners and sells off the avionics and engines.

The airport is also home to a retired British Airways Boeing 747 that has been converted into a "party plane" for birthdays and other private events.

He was then faced with the task of moving the plane from Cotswold to its home in Bristol.

hotel la tour facebook

Palmer said the plane was transported via the M5 motorway and required a police escort.

"They closed the motorway for us to go down," he said. "That was fine for us but not so good for the motorists stacked up behind."

Palmer said the high-class interior was left in its original configuration and that he brought in a car detailer to wash, polish, and vacuum.

hotel la tour facebook

He said he spent "tens of thousands" of dollars to restore the interior, on top of the cost of the jet itself.

Palmer said if the aircraft-to-Airbnb conversion proves financially viable, he'd consider adding another converted airplane to his fleet.

But the lighting, sound, and plumbing needed work, he said.

hotel la tour facebook

To get the jet up and running, Palmer said he repaired the lights, fitted the aircraft with a new sound system and high-speed internet, and replaced its 110-volt electrical system with a 240-volt one.

And he had to create a structure from shipping containers to hold the jet in place.

hotel la tour facebook

According to PYTCHAir's website , the containers are stacked high to give the aircraft a sense of flying above the clouds. The company said the structure is "vastly over-engineered" and gets regular safety checks.

"Taking inspiration from the world of aviation, the tops of the shipping containers have been turned into a runway, and the rear air stairs open out onto a landing pad," PYTCHAir said.

Once fixed up, the plane operated as a multi-use space for things like parties and meetings before becoming a full-time Airbnb.

hotel la tour facebook

Palmer said that PYTCHAir has been in operation for three years. Before it was turned into an Airbnb, it was previously used as a film set, a meeting space, and even for sleepovers with his wife and kids.

Palmer converted the 727 into an Airbnb earlier this year. It has a minimum two-night stay at about $438 per night — or around $876 for a two-night booking.

hotel la tour facebook

He said he wanted to put the plane on Airbnb to share it with the world.

"The initial novel and weirdness of the aircraft has kind of worn off a little bit for me," Palmer said. "So, I thought now I can share it with more people and maybe get a few quid in for its running costs, maintenance, and ongoing improvements," he said, using British slang for money.

According to Palmer, the 727 can comfortably accommodate up to four people, but he said more can hypothetically fit.

hotel la tour facebook

He suggested people max their parties at four people to have the best experience in the space.

"I'm still refining the offering and getting the experience really, really good," Palmer said, noting that he may tweak the pricing. "This is something I'm passionate about."

The sleeping options include a separate bedroom with a king bed, a bunk bed, a pull-out couch, and a few sofas.

hotel la tour facebook

The main four sleeping options are the king bed, the sofa, and the lower bunk in the crew rest area.

Aside from those, there's also a pull-out couch in one of the two lounges that's another sleeping option. And there's another couch in the main bedroom that could be slept on, he said.

However, the upper twin bed is particularly cramped due to the shape of the ceiling.

hotel la tour facebook

The cramped berth, which Palmer said is rarely ever used, is where the crew could sleep during flights when the 727 was still flying commercially.

The jet also features two main living spaces that can be used for lounging, working, or dining.

hotel la tour facebook

The living rooms have couches, tables, chairs, sound equipment, and televisions.

Palmer said he designed the televisions in the main lounge to double as mirrors.

There is no shortage of comfortable work and living space.

hotel la tour facebook

The 727 narrowbody offers some 70 feet of cabin length and 12 feet of width to work with, per Boeing specs.

There's also a kitchen on board, complete with a dishwasher, two ovens, and a small refrigerator.

hotel la tour facebook

The kitchen is located toward the front of the plane, across from the crew rest beds, and behind the cockpit.

An ensuite bathroom and two half-baths make for a total of three toilets and one shower.

hotel la tour facebook

One communal bathroom is at the front of the aircraft next to the cockpit, one is mid-plane, and the more private third is attached to the bedroom and has a shower.

There are sinks and mirrors throughout the cabin.

Among the coolest spaces on the 727 is the cockpit, which Palmer said has some of the original lighting restored.

hotel la tour facebook

PYTCHAir wants to restore as much of the jet as possible, including its systems, avionics, and lights.

For those who don't want to stay overnight at PYTCHAir, Palmer said he welcomes visitors to see the plane during the day.

hotel la tour facebook

"I want to make it accessible, so anyone interested in seeing planes, especially little kids, can just send us a message, then we'll show them around and let them play and get selfies," he said.

Palmer's decked-out Boeing jet isn't the world's only scrapped plane given a second life. One 727-turned hotel lives in a jungle in Costa Rica.

hotel la tour facebook

A 727 in Quepos, Costa Rica, has been converted into the Hotel Costa Verde and features bedrooms , a kitchenette, a deck, and plenty of sitting space.

A giant Boeing 747 hostel-hotel complete with four engine rooms sits in Sweden.

hotel la tour facebook

JumboStay sits next door to Arlanda Airport in Stockholm and features both dorm-style rooms and private rooms in the main cabin, the stairwell, and the engines.

Meanwhile, at least half a dozen old commercial planes have ended up in a deep grave as man-made diving sites.

hotel la tour facebook

The sunken planes off the coast of countries including Bahrain, Canada, and Turkey promote diving tourism and include aircraft like an Airbus A300, a Boeing 737-200, and a Boeing 747 jumbo jet.
