Indigo becomes first indian airline to test iata's travel pass.

IndiGo has become India's first airline to pilot IATA's Travel Pass. The app allows travelers to pre-verify their travel requirements, including testing, vaccination, and entry guidelines. While the app was originally set to launch weeks ago, it remains in testing with select airlines globally.

Domestic and international?

In a statement this week, IndiGo announced that it will be India's first airline to use IATA's Travel Pass for its flights. The exact routes it will be rolled out on remain under wraps, including if it could be used on domestic flights. While the app is meant for international travel, India's complex domestic testing rules mean it may come in handy there too.

IndiGo joins dozens of other airlines globally using the Travel Pass in trials. From LATAM to Finnair to Ethiopian , the app is being tested globally before being rolled out to passengers at large. To access the app, travelers currently need an airline-given six-digit code.

In a statement about the inclusion of Travel Pass on IndiGo flights, CEO Ronojoy Dutta said,

"We are proud to partner with IATA to become the country’s first airline to take this step towards enabling customers with a travel pass mobile app. This initiative is a significant step to prepare for a new normal, especially with regards to international travel...We are certain that our collaboration with IATA on this innovation will prove to be a stepping-stone towards international air travel recovery, while providing a hassle-free experience to our customers.”

The pass saves time

IATA Travel Pass will save both passengers and airlines a lot of time . Anyone who has traveled internationally since last March knows the effort that goes into ensuring you are eligible to travel. From negative test reports to health declarations and vaccination proof, paperwork is a maze for any international flight these days.

The same applies to airlines and immigration . Staffers must verify every single document to ensure it is authentic and meets the destination's requirements. This has led to long lines at many airports, extending into the hours , and a lot of confusion about what is needed. IATA Travel Pass aims to simplify this into a single application.

Instead of paperwork, travelers just have to upload their details straight onto Travel Pass. The app has also partnered with testing centers to direct send results to the app, cutting down the chances of fraud too . Once you have met the requirements, a green tick will appear to let airlines know that you are ready to fly!

Rolling out

IATA's Travel Pass initiative is not new by any means. It came into operation in January 2021 and quickly began finding airline partners. However, despite timelines for a public rollout , the app remains limited to a few routes with trial airlines . For digital passports to truly take off, they will need to expand their reach and gain more acceptance globally. Until then, we'll all be carrying paperwork to the airport for our next flight.

What do you think about IndiGo's decision to use Travel Pass? Let us know in the comments!

Web Stories

Every airline has had to improvise their services and way of working in the last few weeks. The priority of the aviation industry at the moment is to make money for all the losses they had to endure during the lockdown. But at the same time, they want to keep their customers safe. IndiGo is one such airline. It has introduced a new SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) for continuing flights. Now you won’t see the airline serving food in its flights anymore. Some of the new IndiGo travel mandates are concerned with reaching the airport early, printing boarding pass, baggage tag, and more. Keep reading to find out.

IndiGo Travel Mandates For Reaching Airport

According to the new IndiGo travel mandates, you need to reach the airport earlier than you usually do. You have to reach the airport at least two hours before your flight is scheduled for departure. The counters for your flight will close 1 hour before the departure. So ensure that you reach the airport in time as you need to go through other procedures as well and that will take time.

Web Check-In

Physical checking at the airline counters at the airport has been removed. Only web check-in is allowed at the moment. At the airport, only the baggage drop facility will be availed. Web check-in for your flight will be open 48 hours prior to your departure time. It will close only one hour before your flight's departure.

Health Declaration and Arogya Setu App

When you are trying to book your flight, you will receive a form via email on which you will need to declare your health status. To ensure a hassle-free airport experience, you must do it. Your boarding pass will be issued only after you declare your health status.

Also, according to IndiGo travel mandates, every passenger must have the Aarogya Setu app installed on their smartphones. Apart from children who are under the age of 14, it is mandatory for everyone to have the Aarogya Setu app on their smartphone with a green status.

Boarding Pass, Baggage Tags and Travelling Light

For following the concept of contactless travel, IndiGo travel mandates ask the passengers to print their now boarding pass and baggage tags. After web check-in, you can download the e-ticket and baggage tags. Then according to your convenience, you can get them printed.

Also, customers must travel light. IndiGo has revised its baggage policy. Now customers can only carry a one check-in bag with a limit of 20 Kg. Along with this, only one handbag is allowed to be taken inside the aircraft. The handbag should be small enough to fit under your seat.

IndiGo Travel Mandates For the Airport

The passenger must come to the airport wearing their own face masks and keep it on their face throughout their journey. Along with this, passengers are advised to wear hand gloves and keep a 350ml hand sanitiser. Also, the airline has advised customers from not touching their face.

IndiGo travel mandates for the airport also suggests that customers strictly follow social distancing. Anything that you want to eat, eat it at the airport because you won’t be allowed to eat inside the plane. You will have to scan the boarding pass yourself at the boarding gate. Also, keep your identity card handy as you will require it at different times.

IndiGo is trying to do everything to make flights safe for you. All you need to do is follow the rules and regulations that the airline has set. If you have any doubts or queries, then contact the IndiGo customer support.

Indian airlines are on a shopping spree. Here’s proof

The indian aviation industry has been aiming for expansion with the rising demand for air travel..

Listen to Story

Parliamentary panel mulls route-specific capping of airfares

  • IndiGo orders 30 A350-900 aircraft from Airbus
  • Indian carriers collectively ordered 1150 aircrafts in past 15 months
  • Total orders, including purchase rights, sum up to 1590 aircrafts

The Indian aviation industry is experiencing a surge in air travel demand, prompting airlines to invest in expanding their fleets through substantial aircraft orders.

The most recent development involves IndiGo, placing an order for 30 A350-900 widebody aircraft from European manufacturer Airbus on April 25, 2024.

The deal, estimated to range between $4 billion and $5 billion, marks IndiGo's first purchase of widebody planes for its operations.

IndiGo currently operates two B777 aircraft, which are on lease from Turkish Airlines. The airline stated that the exact configuration of the A350-900 aircraft will be determined later, with deliveries scheduled to commence from 2027.

Additionally, IndiGo has purchase rights for an extra 70 Airbus A350 family aircraft for potential future needs under specific conditions .

Over the past 15 months, Indian carriers have collectively ordered 1150 aircrafts to meet the rising demand for air travel in the country.

Earlier, in February 2023, the Tata-run Air India Group made headlines with an order for 470 planes — 250 from Airbus and 220 from Boeing. Media reports estimate the value of this order to be around $70 billion.

The order comprises 470 firm aircraft along with 370 options and purchase rights to be procured over the next decade from both Airbus and Boeing.

IndiGo also made headlines in June 2023 with the world's largest aircraft order, securing 500 A320neo family planes from Airbus. The delivery of these aircraft is expected between 2030 and 2035.

Although the list price for this order stands at $55 billion, actual sale prices, typically undisclosed, are usually lower.

Further expanding the fleet, the new airline Akasa Air placed an order for 150 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in January 2024, valued at approximately $20 billion based on current list prices.

This order includes a mix of 737 MAX-8 and 737 MAX-10 variants, accommodating up to 230 passengers per aircraft.

In total, the orders placed over the past 15 months, including purchase rights, sum up to 1590 aircrafts, underlining the industry's commitment to meeting the growing air travel demand in India.

With the country witnessing a surge in air travel demand and plans to establish new airports, the trajectory suggests that aircraft orders may continue to climb in the coming years. Published By: Sonu Vivek Published On: Apr 26, 2024

Do You Need Proof of Onward Travel to Enter Thailand? (FAQ)

Are you planning a trip to Thailand and wondering about the immigration rules regarding proof of onward travel?

To help you understand the regulations and avoid any potential issues, I have compiled a comprehensive FAQ guide to answer your questions.

Whether you're a tourist or entering on a specific visa, this article will provide you with the essential information you need to ensure a smooth and hassle-free entry into the Land of Smiles.

Let's dive in and clarify the requirements.

Do I Need Proof of Onward Travel to Enter Thailand?

Yes. When traveling to Thailand as a tourist and entering on a visa exemption stamp, you are required to have a return ticket. Immigration authorities may ask for proof of onward travel to ensure that you do not intend to remain in the country illegally.

To quote the Thai Embassy in London:

Foreigners entering Thailand by any means are required at the port of entry to have proof of onward travel (confirmed air, train, bus or boat tickets) to leave Thailand within 30 days of the arrival date.

To clarify, a visa exemption stamp, also known as a visa waiver or entry stamp, is a form of permission granted to enter Thailand without the need for a visa. It is stamped directly into your passport upon arrival. A visa exemption stamp allows you to stay in Thailand for 30 days. The duration of stay may vary depending on country of origin.

Does It Have to Be an Onward or Return Flight?

Historically, no. An air, train, bus or boat ticket, would have sufficed, as long as it took you outside of Thailand. However, on the eVISA Tourist Visa requirements page, it now states that you must have:

Evidence of travel from Thailand (air ticket paid in full).

Poorly worded, but one assumes this means for leaving Thailand (from), as opposed to flying into Thailand (to). When one goes to the Non Immigrant O Visa requirements page on the same website this is not listed as a requirement.

I Have a Tourist Visa. Do I Still Proof of Onward Travel?

To clarify the above, yes, you do. It didn't use to be the case, but now it is not possible to apply for or enter Thailand on a Tourist Visa with a one-way ticket. The Embassy or consulate will reject your visa application if you cannot provide proof of a return/onward ticket from Thailand.

I Have a Non-Immigrant O Visa. Do I Need Proof of Onward Travel?

No, you don't.  You can get a Non Immigrant O Visa without providing proof of onward travel, and you can enter Thailand with this visa.

According to immigration rules, you can travel on a one-way ticket to Thailand if you possess a valid visa, which must be presented during the check-in process. Failure to present this visa may result in being denied boarding or being asked to purchase an onward flight ticket.

Tourist Visas are now excluded from this rule and do require a return/onward flight/

I've Heard Thai Immigration Officers Don't Ask for Proof of Onward Travel?

While it is true that Thai immigration officers may not always ask for proof of onward travel, it is important to note that they have the authority to do so if deemed necessary. The requirement for proof of onward travel, such as a return ticket or a confirmed ticket to another destination, is stated in Thai immigration regulations.

Immigration officers have the discretion to ask for supporting documents based on various factors, including the purpose of visit, length of stay, previous travel history and individual circumstances.

It is always advisable to be prepared and carry the necessary documents to comply with immigration requirements.

Will My Airline Ask for Proof of Onward Travel?

Some airlines may ask for proof of onward travel before you board a flight to Thailand. They do this to ensure compliance with immigration regulations and to avoid potential issues with passengers being denied entry upon arrival.

If you are unable to provide proof of onward travel and the airline allows you to board the flight anyway, there is a risk that you may be refused entry by Thai immigration officers upon arrival. In such cases, you may be required to purchase an onward ticket or be subjected to other immigration procedures, such as being detained until you can make suitable travel arrangements.

It's important to check with your airline regarding their specific policies on proof of onward travel to avoid any complications during your journey.

Can I Just Purchase a Ticket & Then Cancel It When I'm Inside Thailand?

While purchasing an onward ticket and canceling it later may seem like a convenient solution, it's important to note that the immigration authority may consider this practice a violation of their policies. Additionally, canceling a ticket after arrival may not always be possible or may result in additional fees or penalties with the airline.

I would generally recommend to have a genuine and valid onward ticket that complies with Thailand's immigration requirements. This helps ensure a smooth travel experience and minimizes the risk of being denied entry.

If you do purchase a ticket with the intention of cancelling, make sure the ticket is refundable.

Is There Any Way Around This?

There are companies that offer an onward flight ticket reservation for a fee. They give you a flight reservation made by a registered travel agency that come with a PNR (Passenger Name Record) Code, which is verifiable on major airline's websites. The reservation automatically expires, without you having to cancel (or pay full price).

One Way Fly is one such company.

Is It True That You May Also Be Asked For Proof of Funds?

Upon arrival in Thailand, there is a possibility that you may be asked to provide evidence of sufficient financial means for the duration of your stay. The accepted forms of proof include cash or traveler's checks equivalent to 20,000 Baht per person, or 40,000 Baht per family.

It's worth noting that while this requirement is not frequently enforced by immigration officers, it is still an official requirement that should be taken into consideration.

Is There Anything Else I Need to Enter Thailand?

Yes. To enter Thailand, you must have a passport that is valid for at least six months from the date of entry. Damaged passports may cause issues when entering Thailand, so it is generally recommended to have a passport in good condition, without significant damage or wear. If a passport is severely damaged, torn, or unreadable, it may be considered invalid and could result in denial of entry.

Additionally, some nationalities are eligible for visa exemptions or visa-on-arrival, while others may need to obtain a visa in advance. It's important to check the specific requirements based on your nationality before traveling.

Additionally, it's important to adhere to the validity period of your visa or permission to stay stamp in Thailand. Overstaying can result in fines of 500 Baht per day, up to a maximum of 20,000 Baht, which is payable at the airport on departure. However, if you are caught by immigration on overstay, you could be deported and banned from Thailand for up to 10 years. For more detailed information on the overstay policy please see here.

Lastly, not having a return flight date may invalidate your travel insurance. This is a little-known fact. See here for more details.
