Irish legends

I had never done a bus trip so this was a first, I can't say enough about how thrilled we were. We went to places I never would have thought about had we tried to see Ireland on our own. We stayed at great hotels centrally located. Our bus driver/tour guide Niall was absolutely the best. He was knowledgeable and quite funny. We started out on the tour with 40 strangers by the end of the tour everyone felt like friends and family. I would absolutely book again and defiantly ask for Niall to be our guide.

We traveled with CIE on a 12 day Irish Odyssey tour. Collum (sp?) was our tour guide and he was amazing. We saw everything we possibly could see! All of the guides we worked with on walking tours and visits we fabulous. The food was a little heavy for me but anytime I asked for a plain chicken breast I was able to get it. My only complain was that we didn't actually get to stay in Cabra Castle we stayed in one of the outbuilding. But that being said it was a very nice room!

irish legends cie tour

We traveled from Dublin around the cost...first South to Cork then up toward Killarney, Dingle, County Clare....to Galway...Northern Ireland ... and back to Dublin. IT was an amazing 13 day tour. Our Irish guide Colm was professional, bright, kind and witty....everything you would expect from a fine Irish gentleman! The agenda was packed but well thought out and full of adventure and fun. The tour included breakfast every day which was great and one other meal, usually dinner. Plenty of good food.

This company is A+ as far as I am concerned. The price for our 14 day “Jewels of Ireland” trip was more than reasonable with everything that was provided. There were no hidden or additional fees. The price quoted is all that you pay. The hotels were all high end as stated in their literature. Even though we were part of a tour, the hotel service treated us like we were 5 star guests not a step child. Meals that were included in the tour and served by the hotels and/or restaurants were also of top quality. The meal portions were so large, my husband and I could have easily shared a meal and been content. Our tour bus was very clean and the driver/tour guide was top notch. Every day we were given our safety briefing. Seat belts are a must. Many of the country roads were extremely narrow for a bus but our driver, Peter, navigated them safely. Peter also acted as our tour guide. He seriously should have been a college professor in Irish history. Ireland has had several upheavals over time and Peter was able to give us both sides of the story without being biased.

Last year (2016) we took the CIE Clans and Castles tour of Scotland. This was an excellent tour. I base my evaluation on the following criteria: 20% scenery and activities, 20% accommodations, 20% Food and 40% Tour Director & Driver. Scenery and activities were great, accommodations and food except for the Balmacara Hotel were good, tour director and driver were excellent which really were the element that made the tour excellent. July 2017 we took another CIE Tour, Heart of Wales and England. This tour was no where near excellent. First the schedule is too aggressive. We spent 2 hours in Bath to see the Roman Baths and have lunch. We had no time to see the city. We arrived in Cardiff late afternoon with just enough time to change clothes for the banquet at Cardiff Castle. We had a brief tour of the castle before dinner. The dinner and live entertainment were excellent. But once again we had no time to see the city. The coach ride through Wales was very nice, the visit to the slate museum was interesting as was the train ride. However I would have preferred more time in Bath and Cardiff. Our stay at Stratford-Upon-Avon was just about right. A one hour stroll through Oxford is simply inadequate as is 4 hours in Windsor. I would suggest you revise the schedule and make it two days longer. Tour Director: Phillip Boots His personality disqualifies him for this kind of work as he is boorish, rude and condescending. He seems to think he is the master and we are the students. He thinks his jobs is to control us as if we were 12 year old children. He does not speak to coach passengers but lectures his passengers in a dramatic voice which reminds me of Carson on Downton Abbey. This method stifles any interaction between passengers and the director. On July 16th when coach air conditioning was not working he said “due to the many sarcastic remarks we will meet a fixer to look at the air conditioning”. After the air conditioning was fixed, Phil never apologized for the discomfort we experienced due to no air conditioning. He is a pompous windbag who does not merely comment on history and culture pertaining to areas of immediate interest. His lectures drone on endlessly on every conceivable topic. He gave multiple lectures on wind farms, British taxes, property values, politics of Brexit, trade and tariffs, drinking and driving, penalties for DUI, vehicle insurance cost, garbage pickup schemes based on rubbish bin color and recycling schemes. Due to this unpleasant experience with Mr. Boots I will think twice before booking another CIE tour.

My husband and I just returned yesterday from a CIE Tour of Ireland "Pubs and Folklore". We had an amazing time. Our group was around 20 people, we toured the South of Ireland starting in Dublin and making stops in the most gorgeous towns, Kilkenny, Killarney, Westport to name a few. Each day we had a short history lesson mixed in with some good Irish humour covering the history and stories of Ireland. Our excursions were interesting and all included. Hotels were well situated and very nice/clean, and had good amenities. Our driver and guide Denis O'Sullivan was exceptional ! Professional, knowledgeable, great humour and a skillful driver! I can't say enough good things about him. We had never experienced bus tours before and were pleasantly surprised at how quickly the group blended and interacted with each other. Our bus was new, clean, spacious, very comfortable, equipped with wifi, charging ports, and with huge windows. Also being in a bus in Ireland with an elevated view made observing the countryside easy. In a car you would miss the views due to the the high hedges and walls, not to mention the difficulty negotiating the roads and driving on the other side. Each night we could wander into almost any pub...and there are lots of pubs and hear live music playing. This was such a treat! The locals were very warm and inviting. We recommend arriving a few days early to get climatized. Also recommend more jeans and less shorts. The weather is similar to our spring in Ontario - you need a good raincoat. Bring Layers. As one locals said to me "there's no such thing as bad weather in Ireland, just bad clothing ". I will definitely recommend CIE to family and friends, and look forward to my next trip.

Gerry Glavin knows the Irish countryside like the back of his hand. He can show you every sheep farm, cow farm and horse farm that dot the landscape.

Glavin loves to share a lighthearted limerick. “Some Guinness was spilt on the barroom floor, and the pub — it was shut for the night. Out of his hole, crept a wee brown mouse and he sat in the pale moonlight.”

He’s also a storyteller and he’ll regale listeners with a tale or two.

But most of all, Glavin provides the best tours of Ireland because it’s his home.

Travel company CIE Tours employs locals, like Glavin, to serve as its tour directors. With nearly a century of experience, CIE Tours knows well that to truly see a place, travelers must see it through the eyes of a local.

Dermot Honan is as Irish as they come, having been “born, bred and buttered in Ireland.”

“What sets CIE Tours apart? The people. The tour directors. The fact that we’ve grown up here — this is our country,” said Honan. “This is what we are showing you — a lived experience.”

Anyone can read a guidebook and give a tour, but there’s something magical about travelling with a local. Locals understand that the best gifts are experiences etched into the soul, not something wrapped in a small box.

That’s what travelers with CIE Tours get when stepping onto Irish soil. They are greeted with the warmest of welcomes as they take in the rolling green hills, charming cottages, captivating castles, and breathtaking coastlines.

Every corner of this captivating island invites exploration — from the bustling streets of Dublin to the serene beauty of the Wild Atlantic Way. As travelers journey through Ireland, they are immersed in a rich tapestry of culture, music and folklore.

The locals make visitors feel like old friends. Whether they’re sipping a pint of Guinness in a centuries-old pub or marveling at the mystical Cliffs of Moher, every moment in Ireland is a new chapter in a story waiting to be discovered.

Explore with peace of mind

Take a moment to imagine going on a trip in which everything has been carefully planned, so that all there is to do is enjoy every moment of the adventure.

This is what CIE Tours offers — a trusted travel companion handling all the nitty-gritty details while explorers focus on the journey. With over 90 years of experience, CIE Tours is the go-to company for discovering Ireland’s stunning landscapes, friendly vibe and deep history.

See history come to life

Ireland is a travel destination that has captured imaginations for centuries, where the past meets the present in a testament to the island’s allure.

With CIE Tours, travelers walk in the footsteps of legends at the Giant’s Causeway, explore medieval monasteries at Glendalough and Clonmacnoise, and discover the stories of revolutionaries at Kilmainham and Glasnevin.

But the adventure doesn’t end with Ireland. CIE Tours also offers European packages. Travelers can see Britain’s Stonehenge , Scotland’s castles , Italy’s masterpieces , or Iceland’s glaciers .

CIE Tours offers several options for individuals, families and group travel . In addition to guided tours , travelers can opt for a self-drive adventure or a customized p rivate driver experience.

Make friends along the way

Open the door to a world of breathtaking landscapes and incredible experiences. Each day of adventure is brimming with the promise of fascinating history, enchanting locales, and unique adventures best celebrated with friends, old and new.

Don’t scratch the tour guide off that list.

“A lot of them, we become very good friends with and remain friends with them afterward,” said Glavin. This is just another way CIE Tours takes cultural immersion to a whole new level. CIE Tours is there for whatever adventure explorers seek.

And it all begins with the warm welcome of local experts, like Glavin, Honan and a host of others, who know every nook and cranny of their homeland, making the journey one that’s truly unforgettable.

The CIE Tours difference

For nearly a century, CIE Tours has been weaving travel dreams into reality, and the secret behind its success lies in the unparalleled travel experience the company offers.

This travel company takes pride in its rich history, which began back in 1932. With roots in Ireland’s national transit system, CIE Tours’ trains and buses connected the cities, towns and villages of Ireland before expanding to serve travelers worldwide.

Today, CIE Tours has helped more than 3 million guests enjoy the vacation of their dreams with carefree touring, authentic experiences and expert guides. Their all-inclusive packages mean no hidden fees or surprises; all attractions and many meals are included in one upfront price.

On Nov. 19, would-be travelers can find special deals during CIE Tours’ Black Friday sale, its most significant sale of the year. On Cyber Monday, exclusive offers continue and are designed to inspire travelers. CIE Tours has introduced four new tours in Ireland, Scotland, and Italy for 2024.

See what people are saying about this trip

Paul francis braudis, if i re-visit ireland, i'd definitely consider one of cie's other tours..

We booked Aer Lingus through CIE with our tour. Like most airlines today, they have lost interest in their customers - seats to close together and food not very appetizing. This will probably be our last flight with them.

CIE Tours Customer

Great tour; best tour guide/driver, beautiful country.

My husband I booked the Irish Legends tour. A very delayed flight had us arriving in Dublin after the tour had already begun. We were pleasantly surprised to be greeted by a CIE rep (Conor) at baggage claim.. Conor was in phone contact with our tour guide (Collin) and walked us to a taxi and gave the driver instructions to where to meet up with our tour. Collin was waiting for us-- and off we went-- for the next 9 days we were on a tour with 15 other adults with Collin as our guide and driver. What an amazing experience. Collin was a wealth of knowledge - history, culture, current events, people, geoography- and clearly has great pride and love of his home. And what's not to love about Ireland-- the most incredible landscapes, great people, and beer. The decision to take a CIE tour was definitely the best choice-- Collin navigated the twisty, narrow country roads while we sat back and enjoyed the views (and comfort and WiFi) from our seats. At every stop, Collin had great suggestions of additional things to do, see, or eat. The hotels on the trip were all great choices-- and one in particular (The Dunloe) had the most amazing views and grounds to explore. The pace was just right.. it packed in lots of experiences without being too fast or too slow. And that Collin worked with the hotel staff to get us from the bus to our room and handled our luggage made relaxing even easier. Great tour, made amazing with the fantastic guide/driver Collin. Thank you CIE!

Overall the our was very good. The bus driver and city tour guides were extremely knowledgeable. The coach was comfortable and the pace was easy to keep up with. The food got kind of boring but understandable given the length of time available for meals out.

Brion Charles Kenzie

For the most part, all the hotels were very good. The last hotel North Star in Dublin was not as good as all the other hotels we stayed at. For the most part, the meals were excellent. The lunch at the Kilarney Design Ctr. was not very good.

Helen Sullivan Baniszewski

Great locations, wonderful guide and comfortable hotels and bus.
