Travel guide to Margarita Island, Venezuela

Travel guide to Margarita Island, Venezuela

What a beauty of Margarita Island!

Location of Margarita Island:

Margarita Island Map

Also called Isla Margarita, it is floating n the Caribbean Sea, facing the north-east coast of Venezuela, a South American nation. Venezuela’s eastern side faces the Atlantic Ocean.

Looking at the map of Venezuela, it appears , Margarita Island is a gateway to several Caribbean paradises that include:

  • Trinidad & Tobago
  • Tortuga Island
  • Bonaire-Dutch West Indies

Interesting Fact:

Venezuela was once a Spanish colony. It declared independence and joined Columbia.  Finally, it became a full independent nation in 1830. It is still called a Latin American country.

Contrary to popular assumption, Venezuela is the most modernized of all the South American countries.

Overview of Margarita:

It is part of the Venezuelan state known as Nueva Esparta. The island is largely mountainous. Being a Caribbean Island, Margarita is tropical in nature.

The mountains wear green cape and is really lush. That gives the island a terrific tropical look.

Margarita has two siblings, namely:

  • Coche Island
  • Cubagua Island

La Asuncion is the capital of Nueva Esparta state. It is located on Margarita Island.

How to go to Margarita Island?

The island has an airport in Porlamar, a portal city on the island’s south coast.

The island’s capital city La Asuncion is situated 10 km away from Porlamar.

It receives flights from Caracas, the capital of Venezuela. The flight duration is only 35 minutes.

Travel by ferry from Caracas to Margarita Island.

The distance between the capital of Venezuela (Caracas) to Porlamar port city is about 480 km.

There is a ferry service that connects the two destinations. The voyage involves about 7 hours.

 Where to stay on Margarita?

For the rich and famous, the best choice is Sunsol Isla Caribe. It’s obviously a seafront resort with luxury guaranteed.

For the mid-range travellers, the Costa Caribe resort is the best bet.

Aria by LD, and Wyndham Concorde offer breathtaking view from the bedrooms, and the sit out that seems to be hanging above the Caribbean Sea.

If you are a budget solo traveller, find out the availability in Casa Maya Guest House and Sleep ‘N’ Ride.

What to eat on the island?

Ceviche

It is a fish fry that was marinated in lemon juice before frying.  When served, you can find raw onion rings and finely-chopped cilantro on top of the dish.

Cole Slaw

It is mainly a cabbage salad that is served with rice or ceviche.

Mashed or fried raw banana

This is a spring roll with stuffing of meat, and vegetables. It is dipped in ketchup before every bite.

Playa Pampatar Beach

beach

It is a popular beach of semi-circular shape. Abutting the beach, there are several residences and hotels.

This beach is part of the south coastal city of Porlamar.

Sambil Shopping Mall

Even though Pampatar is a small town, the mall appears oversized-isn’t it?

Nonetheless, it is where you spend some time having visited Porlamar, 10 km from Pampatar Beach.

Punta Ballena Beach

This beach is at the southern end of the island. There is an ancient lighthouse too but I think it is not open for the tourists.

Playa al Yaque

It is where, water sports are famous. Both windsurfing, and wave surfing are played.

Kite-surfing is also available for adventure veterans.

Seafood stalls that sell, just-caught fish, and crab fritters do brisk business.

Playa el Agua

I think ‘playa’ means ‘beach’ in Spanish. Please be aware that, Spanish is the official language in entire Venezuela.

It is an affluent seafront with the backdrop of beautiful, tall buildings. El Morro is a must-visit place on the island.

All the beaches on the island are covered with white sand that makes the beaches attractive.

See the Fort of Santa Rosa.

A Spanish construction, the fort is built on a mountain. The view is fantastic from that height.

Santa Rosa Fort is situated right in the heart of La Asuncion. Invariably, your local tour of Margarita starts with the visit to the fort because; your first impression of this Venezuelan island should be good.

I saw several photos of the island from the fort. The green cover is everywhere. It is such a pleasant sight to the eyes.

Laguna de la Restinga

Laguna de la Restinga

Yes, the name points to a small lagoon that is part of the national park with the same name.

The national park comes under a wetland and hence a Ramsar Site. This implies, it is an important birding area because of the availability of abundant prey.

The place of the salty lagoon and the national park is quite close to Macanao Peninsula, near the island’s western coast.

Here, you get the rare opportunity to see a sandbar that connects two water-bodies.

In this case, the two water bodies are the Caribbean Sea, and the Restinga Lagoon whose depth is only 8 feet.

Marine creatures to see in the lagoon by snorkeling:

What a creation!

Being an important bird watching area, you can capture the photos of the following beautiful birds.

  • Scarlet Ibis.
  • Frigate Bird
  • Green Heron

A pier exists to walk through. Boat tours are available to show you the mangroves that are the nesting habitat for the birds.

Basilica Virgen del Valle

When translated into English, it reads, “Basilica of Our Lady of El Valle.

The basilica stands majestic and beautiful.

An important festival is held by the church during September, every year. It draws thousands of pilgrims.

Playa Punta Arenas

It’s an uncrowded beach on the western coast of the island. Since the beach receives very few visitors, somehow, the sea is also rather calm with gentle waves.

The word, ‘punta’ implies the playa (beach) is at the tip of the land. In this case, it is the western tip.

Clams and starfish are washed ashore as if to show what is beneath the water.

Go to the mountains on a horse

For once, you get a lifetime opportunity to ride a horse, that too on a mountain trail that keeps ascending.

Lush forests on either side of the trail are pleasing to the eyes.

Marine Museum

I thought an aquarium will pull more visitors than a museum of marine biology. Maybe, the museum is intended for educational purposes only.

Actually, there is an aquarium inside the museum. Isn’t it a bad idea to name the place as an aquarium than a museum?

The star attraction in the aquarium is the “sea horses”.

I think Margarita Island doesn’t draw visitors from abroad. Only the people of Venezuela occasionally go to the island to unwind .

This tour package starting from your hotel on Isla Margarita or in Caracas brings you first to the Orinoco Delta , where you will explore the wildlife and indigenous communities, then to the Canaima National Park with its beautiful lagoons and famous waterfalls. You will explore the Lagoon and rivers and hike close to the Angel Falls . The tour ends at your hotel.

Daily Itinerary

Early in the morning we fly from Isla Margarita or Caracas to Maturín. Then a 1 hour transport by road to the port of San José de Buja where our boat will waiting on the river to take you to the Orinoco Eco Camp. During the half hour boat trip, and throughout the time in the delta, there will be many opportunities to observe the wildlife in the area. There are macaws, toucans, caymans howler monkeys, dolphins as well as, butterflies. There is also a collection of fauna indigenous to the orinoco delta.

When we arrive, there will be a small tour of the camp to familiarise yourself with your surroundings. Then, after you have made yourselves at home, we will provide you with poles and bait the hooks with raw meat to fish for piraña. If you catch one, our kitchen can prepare it for a snack. After lunch we take an excursion by boat to visit the Warao indians and learn about this native South American tribal community. Later, a Warao guide will locate an ideal place in the jungle where you will take a walk and get a feeling of life inside this unforgiving environment. You will notice pungent odours weaving their way through a tapestry of crawling plants and giant trees racing towards the sky for sunlight. A perfect non-human system in an imperfect human world.

At the close of day we will witness an inspiring sunset over the orinoco delta, then return to camp for dinner. There will be an option for a night trip to search the nocturnal world of alligators and snakes. This will be available before or after dinner depending on river conditions.

Early in the morning we will leave from the Orinoco Eco Camp to Ciudad Bolívar where we will serve breakfast on the way. When we arrive at Ciudad Bolívar we take a small aircraft and fly to Canaima. The flight lasts for around an hour, and will give you a birds eye view of Canaima and the Gran Sabana. After we land, we will take you to the picturesque Canaima Lagoon, which is the source for the four waterfalls in the area and makes for some inspiring photography.

We then take a small boat and travel past these waterfalls at a close distance. Here you will be able to get a feeling for the energy they produce. After the boat trip we will walk for approx 20 mins until we reach the impressive Sapo waterfall. When we arrive we will prepare to walk behind this waterfall and you will get wet, cool down from the hike and experience the power of this natural phenomenon.

We will take a boat trip on the Carrao river where we will serve a light lunch. If you are here in the dry season the water levels are lower and so it is possible that we will have to push the boat. While negotiating this river you will experience views of the unusual flat top Tepui mountains which are found only in South America. After this 4 hour ride in a dugout we reach the island Raton There will be a warm dinner in the evening and an overnight stay in a comfortable hammock opposite Angel Falls.

Early in the morning coffee is served then we hike for around 90 mins until we reach the base of Angel Falls. Here your feelings will tingle from the awe inspiring nature of this record breaking wonder. We then return to the camp on Isla Raton where breakfast is served.

Following breakfast there will be one last chance for photographs of Angel Falls. We then head back to the airport at Canaima and fly back to Ciudad Bolívar, where you will once again enjoy the birds eye view over some of Venezuela's most beautiful landscapes. If there is time we will have a short colonial tour around Ciudad Bolívar the historical heart of Venezuela. MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ISLA MARGARITA

As you can expect, Margarita Island is significantly different from the times when Christopher Columbus discovered it. This Venezuelan island became a  mecca for domestic tourism  throughout the centuries.  It is m ainly tourists from countries in South America  who keep exploring the island.

all you need to know about Isla Margarita

SAFETY ON MARGARITA ISLAND IN 2023

As you probably know,  crisis-wracked   Venezuela has a high threat from violent crime .  Food  and  medicine shortages  also affected Margarita Island, which was once a favourite port of call for cruise ships.

Security concerns have also caused a massive drop in tourism in Isla Margarita.

Years of unrest in Venezuela have frightened off most tourists. Because of that, Margarita Island had to approach survival mode tourism. But in January 2023, Isla Margarita welcomed the first European cruise ship in 15 years (German operator Phoenix).

If you want to travel to Margarita Island in Venezuela, c heck for current  travel alerts and warnings   before booking a trip. And don’t forget – try your best to blend in. Also, stay away from danger to avoid landing yourself in any trouble.

HOW TO GET TO ISLA MARGARITA

To get to the island,  fly into either Caracas or Barcelona in Venezuela . Alternatively, fly to other countries and get a direct flight to Porlamar on Margarita Island. Venezuelan airlines (Avior or Estelar) service Porlamar. Flights from Caracas are inexpensive during the week because the island is a popular weekend destination for the locals.

how to get to Margarita Island

New Direct flight to Margarita Island in 2023

Did you know there are new direct flights from Moscow and Poland to Margarita Island? Rainbow Tours launched direct flights from Katowice Airport to Porlamar (as of November 2023). There are also new direct flights from Trinidad and Tobago. Looks like there is a new phase of the renewed tourism drive.

You can also  catch a ferry to Isla Margarita  from the north coast of Venezuela. A company called  Conferry  provides this ferry service.

CURRENCY IN MARGARITA ISLAND

When it comes to the currency in Margarita islands, carry US Dollars. With widespread shortages and skyrocketing hyperinflation,  prices in Venezuela are extremely vulnerable to change . The devaluation of the introduced  bolivar soberano  (BsS), which replaced  the bolivar fuerte  in 2018, caused  Venezuelans to use the US dollars.  The locals use the US dollars for  transactions  and  savings  despite the exchange control established by the Maduro regime.

Bring cash US dollars to Margarita Island in Venezuela and use a parallel market locally. The black market can provide much higher exchange rates. Never use ATMs or official exchange offices due to the low excha nge rates.

You should know it is illegal to advertise the black market exchange rates.

Wow, look at all the beautiful places you’ve been to! With such a warm and pleasant climate and with those beautiful palm trees gently swaying in a breeze, it would be a dram place to explore one day. Thanks for sharing yet another beautiful post from your travels. Wishing you a lovely weekend. Love, Aiva xxx

Would love to visit!!

I enjoyed reading about Margarita through your eyes. I hadn’t even known the island existed until two years ago when I was getting to know my current boyfriend and he listed the island as one of the plaes he has visited. I was so surprised then because I thought I’d known all the islands of the Caribbean having lived here my whole life! I’d love to check it out one day after all the current Venezuelan tensions settle of course. Thanks for sharing.

A lot of people don’t know about Isla Margarita, it is a true hidden gem in the Caribbean! It is such a shame what has happenned to Venezuela. Hope one day it will be safe again to travel to this beautiful country.

It looks like paradise. It is so sad about the situation in Venezuela, hope it gets better soon, because this place looks like a true gem. Thank you so much for sharing.

Thank you very much for stopping by! Isla Margarita is definitely a true gem in the Caribbean. We hope the situation in Venezuela calms down and more travellers will have an opportunity to visit this lovely island.

It does looks amazing and all those beaches took my breath away! But every-time I read Margarita in your article, I imagined to drink the actual margarita on Margarita island 😀 😀 If I do Caribbean next year, I am making sure this tropical paradise is in my list! Karina x

' data-src=

Current situation is so sad. In the mid ’90s the island had a huge marketing campaign in Manhattan and direct flights from NYC. My friends and I went down for a week and it couldn’t have been a better place to just chill on the beach.

' data-src=

I was raised on this island! You did such a good hob here. My husband finally gets to see a good representation of where I’m from! I’ve been looking in to traveling there from Aruba by boat charter. Just a thought for those determined to make it there.

Lucky you!! Isla Margarita is such a lovely unspoilt island. Would love to come back one day, maybe like you said from Aruba. Sounds like a perfect option!

' data-src=

Thank you!!. I’ve just been down memory lane. I LOVE Margarita! In the late 80s and 90s I spent any available holiday I had on the island. I remember dancing the night away and walking up & down Playa El Agua during the day with a “cocada” in hand. I’m so sad my country is in ruins! I dream of spending a few months in Margarita unfortunately I’m literally in the other corner of the planet and last time I went It took me 37 hours by plane. But for all of you close by … give it a go! Margarita is truly amazing!…and the people!!!! The people are lovely, warm, sweet, sassy, funny and beautiful. I recommend the oysters, lobster and of course, the cocadas. Super cheap and devine.

Planning a Trip in Isla de Margarita

Getting There

By Plane -- Several international airlines and dozens of charter carriers have service to Margarita's Aeropuerto Internacional del Caribe Santiago Mariño (airport code PMV; tel. 0295/269-1081 ) from major European cities, as well as from Toronto, Montreal, Miami, and New York. Many of these are sold as package tours.

From Caracas, a couple of dozen flights go to Margarita throughout the day. Aeropostal (tel. 0800/284-6637; www.aeropostal.com), Aserca (tel. 0800/648-8356; www.asercaairlines.com), Conviasa (tel. 0500/266-84272; www.conviasa.aero), and Laser (tel. 0501/527-3700; www.laser.com.ve) all fly between Caracas's Simón Bolívar International Airport and Isla de Margarita. Fares vary radically according to season and day of the week, ranging from BsF150 to BsF300 each way. Midweek and low-season fares are considerably less expensive. Conversely, seats sell out well in advance and at a premium on weekends and holidays and during the high season. Flight schedules and travel agents refer to the airport as Porlamar, although it is around 20km (13 miles) from the city, on the southern part of the island near the beach of El Yaque.

By Ferry -- Although much more time consuming and not much less expensive, ferry service has and continues to be one of Margarita's principal links to the mainland. Visitors, residents, cars, buses, and much of the island's goods and merchandise travel by sea. The main ferry station is at Punta de Piedras on the southern end of the island. The main departure points for ferries to Margarita are Puerto La Cruz and Cumaná on the northern coast of Venezuela several hours east of Caracas. Numerous public buses throughout the day connect Caracas to both Puerto La Cruz and Cumaná. The bus trip runs about 5 hours from Caracas to Puerto La Cruz (fare BsF15-BsF30), and 7 to 8 hours to Cumaná (fare BsF18-BsF35). Several bus lines make this run. Or you can try the Unión Conductores de Margarita, Terminal Oriente, Caracas (tel. 0212/541-0035 or 0295/287-0931), which has a direct combined trip that costs around BsF70 each way.

Basically, there are two types of ferries running from Puerto La Cruz and Cumaná: the older regular ferries, which take between 3 and 4 hours each way, and the newer "express" ferries, which make the crossing in around 2 hours. Ferry schedules change drastically according to season and demand, and even the set schedules are sometimes somewhat flexible. For current ferry schedules and fares, contact Conferry (tel. 0501/266-33779; www.conferry.com) or Gran Cacique Express (tel. 0501/693-3779 or 0295/264-1160; www.grancacique.com.ve).

It's recommended to try buying tickets in advance on weekends and during high season. Costs range from BsF35 to BsF134 per person, each way, and BsF75 to BsF135 per car. The cost difference for passengers is tied to the "class" of your ticket and speed of the boat. I recommend you splurge for the higher-class fares on the express ferries, which will get you a seat in an enclosed and air-conditioned lounge deck, and a quicker ride.

Getting Around

Renting a car is not essential, but it does make getting around Margarita easier. Avis (tel. 0800/227-7600; www.avis.com); Budget (tel. 0800/472-3325; www.budget.com.ve), Hertz (tel. 0800/800-0000; www.hertz.com), and Margarita Rentals (tel. 0295/263-2711 ) all have offices at the airport. It costs BsF180 to BsF300 per day to rent a car. Several outfits around the island rent scooters and mopeds for between BsF90 and BsF120 per day.

Por puesto buses service most of the island. They are a very inexpensive and reliable way to get around, although the going can be slow, as they often stop to pick up and discharge passengers at maddeningly short intervals. Typical service hours are daily from 6am to 8pm. Fares range from BsF0.50 to BsF2.

Taxis are also readily available. It will cost you around BsF70 to travel between the airport and Porlamar; BsF20 between Porlamar and Pampatar; BsF40 between Playa El Agua and either Porlamar or Pampatar; and BsF100 between Playa El Agua and the airport. If you can't flag one down on the street, you can order a cab by calling Sam Mar Taxi (tel. 0295/262-4733 ) or Taxis Unidos (tel. 0295/263-2269 ).

Visitor Information

There is a simple, very basic information desk at the airport in Porlamar. However, you're better off heading to one of the scores of tour agencies to be found around Porlamar and Pampatar and at most major hotels on the island.

Fast Facts -- There are scores of banks on Isla de Margarita. They often have ATMs connected to PLUS or Cirrus systems that will advance you bolívares fuertes against your home account. You'll find ATMs in both Porlamar and Pampatar, as well as at all the large malls and some of the large resort hotels.

In case of any medical emergency, consult with your hotel first, or head to the Luis Ortega Hospital in Porlamar (tel. 0295/261-6508 ).

Internet cafes are located in most malls and major resorts, as well as in Porlamar, in Pampatar, and along Playa El Agua. For regular mail, there are Ipostel offices in both Porlamar and Pampatar. Most hotels will also post mail for you.
