The Jordan Luka 1 is one of the best performance basketball sneakers of 2022 (so far). There’s a lot to get excited about with this highly anticipated Luka Doncic signature sneaker.

Luka Doncic used the Air Jordan 36 and its low-top version for most of the 2021-2022 NBA Season. Once in a while, he would swap those out for the Jordan Zoom Separate . Then, at the end of the season, he broke out his first signature sneaker, the Jordan Luka 1 and Luke fans went nuts. Turns out that the Jordan Luka 1 lived up to all that hype and is currently one of the best overall basketball shoes out there . Check it out.

The traction ties all the performance features together. It is the foundation of all basketball performance sneakers. The outsole on the Jordan Luka 1 is made of translucent rubber and works well with its multi-directional pattern to cover all your movements and changes of direction. Indoors is where it performs its best, even with dust. The pattern is raised enough that it isn’t an issue after wiping. Outdoors, however, was a bit different. There was slight slipping in the forefoot area that needed wiping, and the translucent rubber can’t be depended upon to last for a long time.

Jordan Brand sells us their newest foam with the Jordan Luka 1. That new foam is called Formula 23. What you see on the exterior is the carrier foam and the real moneymaker is housed inside. There’s some space between the Formula 23 and the carrier, so when pressure is applied, it expands and contracts accordingly. However, if you’re expecting a Zoom Air-type experience, you might be disappointed.

Something to note is that there was a noticeable difference after extensive hours of play. The forefoot felt lower than the heel. This might be that the foam is molding to the foot or bottoming out. The insoles are standard Ortholite.

The materials in the Jordan Luka 1 are not premium whatsoever. They’re lightweight, consisting of textiles with fuse overlays and some synthetic leather in the heel and eye stay areas. They’re lighter than the Nike KD 15 , a lightweight shoe on foot. FlightWire wraps around the whole upper for additional support and lockdown. The ankle collar material is soft and makes it easy for you and me to get our feet in and out of the shoe. The tongue is well-padded, comfortable, and rests nicely above the foot.

The fit of the Jordan Luka 1 is adaptable. Going up half a size works fine if you wear ankle braces or other accessories. If you have regular to narrow feet, going true to size should work for you. The shoe is accommodating, especially in the midfoot and forefoot areas. We can thank the tongue that’s slightly disconnected for that. There are only five eyelets that all work together efficiently to ensure that you quickly get your preferred fit.

The IsoPlate system is unconventional yet functional, just like Luka himself. It does a few key things. First, it acts as torsional support. Second, concentrating it on the lateral side makes the shoe much more flexible than other shoes where the torsional plate is placed right in the middle. Third and most importantly, it aids lateral stability during defensive and offensive movements. You can make hard cuts without worrying if the shoe will give too much. The heel counter is also as solid as a rock in order to keep your heel locked in.

The Jordan Luka 1 provides a big bang for your buck , considering that it will fall in the $110-120 price range. Those who value traction (especially indoors), court feel, and an adaptable fit will enjoy the Luka 1 the most.

First Impressions

Rumors of him getting a signature shoe ran rampant while fans watched him lace up those Jordan models. Then, late in the season, he debuted the Jordan Luka 1.

Now, the wait for his fans is finally over: the Jordan Luka 1 has arrived. Although it doesn’t have any Zoom Air like the other shoes mentioned, it does have Jordan’s new Formula 23 foam. It’s comfortable and will more than likely perform well on the court.

We also got our hands on a pair of Luka 1s in the exclusive Quai 54 colorway. This version of the shoe is currently only available overseas.

The Quai 54 is an outdoor tournament held yearly in Paris, under the Eiffel tower. Jordan brand usually releases a slew of products in those years chosen Quai 54 design commemorating the event, and this year is no different. Check it out our close up look at this years colorway.

Following a 53-point performance against the Detroit Pistons, Luka Doni and the Jumpman family have subtly debuted a Jordan Luka 1 with the renowned “Safari” and “Elephant” motifs from NIKE, Inc. The dotted print made its debut in 1987 and was created by Tinker Hatfield in an effort to provide an opulent interpretation of a performance shoe. The Nike Air Safari has never received as much attention as other models in Hatfield’s collection, but it has been the source of numerous treasured versions over time.

The next Jordan Luka 1 boasts “Total Orange” hits all over the upper and sole unit, similar to an Air Max 1 by atmos from 2002. The bulk of the left shoe’s upper is likewise covered in the renowned “Safari” print, while the right shoe’s lateral side prefers the grey pattern that first appeared on the Air Jordan 3 in 1988. (also designed by Hatfield). The components of the basketball shoes as a whole give Doni’s first signature design a crazy overhaul.

DM Kicks Review: Jordan Luka 1 Packs a Ton of Potential

Luka Doncic’s first signature shoe with Jordan is finally here! The Dallas Mavericks young superstar has quickly become a household NBA name since entering the league in 2018, and his exploits led him to a shoe partnership with Jordan Brand in 2019. Last July 2022, Jordan Brand unveiled the Jordan Luka 1, and it comes with intriguing features.

The Luka 1 is an intriguing basketball shoe as it introduces a couple of unique materials such as the IsoPlate system and the Formula 23 foam. It’s a brash experiment that could go wrong, but it’s a first signature shoe anyway.

The Jordan Luka 1’s uppers are covered with Flightwire cables.

Similar to most basketball shoes nowadays, the Jordan Luka 1 implemented minimal materials on its uppers to make it more lightweight. The upper is made of textile material that is covered with Flightwire cables. These Flightwire cables in the Luka 1 are not just present on the forefoot — they actually extend up to the heel area to help stabilize your feet.

You could also see synthetic leather covering the eyelets, and this could give additional lockdown. Moreover, the Luka 1 implements a three-piece tongue and two layers of ankle collars that contribute more to the shoe’s lockdown ability. Another great thing about the Luka 1 upper is its durability; the uppers don’t easily get beat down by direct impact or abrasions.

However, the downside of the Jordan Luka 1’s materials is its ventilation or the lack of it. Despite the light materials on the uppers, the shoe does accumulate a lot of heat when playing. Lack of ventilation is an issue that you should consider when buying the Luka 1.

The Jordan Luka 1’s translucent outsole performs best on indoor courts.

As you can see, the Jordan Luka 1 offers a fully translucent outsole. You just have to break it in for a short while, and then you’ll discover the wonders of its traction performance. The traction pattern is linear from the heel to the midfoot and then changes into a multi-directional design on the forefoot.

The traction on the Luka 1 provides incredible grip, so you don’t have to worry about making quick changes in direction. Furthermore, it also offers a high level of stopping power, which will stabilize your feet when doing hard cuts and sudden pivots.

The drawback here is that translucent outsoles are usually not that durable when you use them on an outdoor court. But if you’re a shifty player and you need the best traction you can have on an indoor court, then the Jordan Luka 1 is the perfect choice for you.

CUSHION AND SUPPORT

There’s no shortage of new concepts in the cushioning and support aspect of the Jordan Luka 1. The most intriguing feature is the Formula 23 tech, which is Jordan Brand’s new full-length performance foam inserted in the midsole of the Luka 1. 

The Formula 23 tech makes the Luka 1 more responsive, but the cushion is not as bouncy as those seen in other shoes such as the Li-Ning Way of Wade 10 . In fact, it’s not bouncy at all, so that’s a bit disappointing especially since there were tons of expectations for the Formula 23 cushion.

But what the Luka 1 lacked in its cushioning, they made up for with the pair’s tremendous torsional support. This is made possible through the new IsoPlate system, which focuses on providing stability to the lateral elements of the shoe. The Luka 1’s IsoPlate technology will keep your feet secure when stepping back and moving forward — a design concept that is obviously concentrated on Doncic’s signature stepback jumper. 

However, the support around the ankle area of the Jordan Luka 1 is not that thick, so you might want to wear a pair of ankle braces if you have ankle issues. Overall, the Formula 23 foam didn’t perform up to par, but the Luka1’s IsoPlate torsional support is as good as advertised.

SIZE AND FITTING

The jordan luka 1 perfectly suits wide-footed players..

Even though the Jordan Luka 1 looks a bit clunky from the outside, it doesn’t feel stiff at all when you wear it. The step-in comfort is great, as the soft ankle and tongue padding will fit your feet right through. 

Having said that, the toebox goes wide so the fit on the Luka 1 is better suited for wide-footed players. If you have a narrow or medium fit, you might want to go true to size in this pair.

OVERALL RATING

The Jordan Luka 1 performs best when doing lateral movements and making hard cuts and pivots on the basketball court. Its traction provides incredible grip, and the IsoPlate technology offers amazing torsional support.

However, the hyped-up Formula 23 cushioning foam was quite a disappointment, as it does not provide a whole lot of bounce and impact protection. This might be a dealbreaker for vertically-athletic players who love to play above the rim. But all in all, this is a great introductory shoe for a new signature line, and there’s no doubt that the Jordan Luka line will only improve from here.  

The Jordan Luka 1 nets an overall rating of 7.5 out of 10.

Shoes seem to run small. Tried three different sizes to a full size bigger and they still felt short. They also need to bring back the little kids and toddler options.

Style and construction is nice. A bit narrow in the toe, seems 1/2 to 1 size too small, suggest ordering at least 1/2 size larger.
