  • Children from the age of 12 and up are welcome at Kambaku River Sands

Sitting majestically on the banks of a dry river bed, Kambaku River Sands entices the guest to sit back and relax. Kambaku (Solitary Bull elephant), takes its name from one of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ tuskers who roamed the Kruger Park for the greater part of the last century. These elephant were renowned for their impressive tusks – having at least one tusk with the estimated weight of over 60kg.

This unfenced camp is perfectly situated on a perennial river with continuous free flowing movement of game both big and small through the camp.

Guests at Kambaku River Sands are often afforded a safari experience with a difference from either their own private decks or the main lodge area, with almost daily up close and personal experiences with elephant, buffalo and bushbuck to name but a few.

The main lodge has a spacious lounge with two enormous open fireplaces for the cool winter nights. The bar allows for guests to watch elephants drinking out of the swimming pool while enjoying a cold beer or chilled glass of wine.

All 10 suites are elegantly decorated, and boast private viewing decks with spectacular views of either the dry River bed or the surrounding bush. All sliding doors are protected with mosquito netting and beds draped with classic white satin nets. Sit back and indulge in the elegance of your suite. Room facilities include a mini bar, butlers tray as well as a variety of guest amenities, outdoor shower and air conditioning.

With its high thatched roof overlooking the Kambaku River Sands waterhole. The spacious surroundings of the Main lodge allow for guests luxurious comfort of the lounge, Kambaku River Sands boasts uncapped WIFI in our Main Lodge area.

Being unfenced, the camp allows for free movement of game through the lodge.  Game drives provide the ideal opportunity to track down the Big 5 and more. We offer bush walks with the space to explore the smaller gems of the bush, and the time in camp during the heat of the day, to observe relaxed animal behaviour from the peace and quiet of your own personal deck.

Game drives are in an uncovered vehicle - allowing for excellent photographic opportunities, with experienced rangers passionate about the bush.

Anja is awesome!
Anja is awesome!! She went above and beyond for me as I had several changes until I locked in my bucket list itinerary and then my friend cancelled. She wasn't mad and just went about cancelling her portion which saved me money in the long run. Anja is a true professional regardless and I have been dealing with her since Sept 2023. Cannot wait until my trip in Sept 2024.

Shann was beyond amazing
Shann was beyond amazing. Listened to our needs, communicated super-efficiently and gave really honest excellent advice. She was so patient, kind and professional. The time difference across the globe made no difference. I am so excited for the itinerary she has put together. I usually cobble my own itinerary together for our holidays and it’s so time consuming and hard work. This was a piece of cake! Thank you Shann.
Great planning and service
Great planning and service, and everything worked like clockwork. We booked an Inyari Lodge safari with air with Safari.com. it wasn't clear if there will be 2 or three of us, so with Candis' help we booked a family chalet for 2 and added the third later when it was confirmed he can come. Candis put us on flights that maximized our game drive time (unlike some of the other guests) so we got all 6 drives in 3 nights. The lodge was great. Especially the game drives. We saw more than we hoped for. Additionally, Safari.com's insurance was very competitive. Highly recommended.

Explore breathtaking namibia at kambaku safari lodge.

Experience tranquil wildlife encounters from horseback. Kambaku Wildlife Reserve gives a warm ambience infused with a touch of luxury in picturesque wilderness

Set in the heart of Namibia, you’ll find the Kambaku Wildlife Reserve, an 8000-hectare wildlife reserve which is just a stone’s throw from Etosha National Park and the Waterberg.  This is the perfect escape for solo travellers, couples, friends and families, and it offers riding for all levels. For those who are new to riding, the team offers lessons in the school and slow and steady rides out in the bush. And for those who are more comfortable in the saddle, there is nothing more magical than riding alongside the herds of impala, seeing wildebeest up close and standing just a few meters away from towering giraffes. And the highlight for any equestrian, is the long canters on soft sandy tracks, often accompanied by the herds of cheeky zebra.

Kambaku offers plenty of wildlife and a variety of ways to discover it. You’ll find antelope species like impala, kudu, eland, red hartebeest and oryx here. There are also giraffe, zebra, warthog, wildebeest, ostrich, porcupine, caracal and aardvark. Occasionally, leopards or cheetahs are spotted, but these elusive creatures keep to themselves. Your stay is completely tailor-made, and there are 2 daily activities to choose from, including riding, guided walks and game drives. In your downtime, adventurous travellers can either walk or cycle along the many routes that wind through the reserve. And for those just looking to relax, enjoy spending time in the gardens, splash in the pool or indulge in a spa treatment.

The lodge is an old farmhouse set in sprawling gardens overlooking the waterhole, where you’ll see plenty of wildlife coming to drink. Many rooms can accommodate groups of friends or families, and there are a couple of luxury rooms tucked away to the side. Meals are served out in the garden, in the cosy dining area or upstairs in the boma area, and are always a highlight. Many of the vegetables, herbs and fruits are grown on the farm, and guests are treated to a real farm-to-table experience. Kambaku’s ethos is to live closely with nature and keep the balance. As such most of the meat on the menu is ethically hunted on the property in keeping with strict wildlife management principles. It is possible that there may be plains game hunters staying at Kambaku when you visit. Your activities are kept completely separate and all hunting is incredibly closely controlled and is only done for management purposes. All meat is then used either at the lodge or within the community. No trophy hunting or any predator hunting happens or is endorsed.

SAMPLE ITINERARY

** Please be aware this is a sample itinerary – it is an example and not an exact timetable. This is to give you an idea of a 7 NIGHT WILD WEEK, but shorter 3, 4 and 5 night stays can be arranged.

Each day is flexible and will be decided once at the lodge This flexible itinerary caters to individual preferences, offering wildlife activities like guided walks and game drives, along with customisable riding sessions, providing choices between safari rides and instructive arena lessons (optional). There are two wildlife activities offered a day, including game drives and guided bush walks. We’ve also included one horse ride per day, plus a very popular bush breakfast to enhance your experience. Between rides, guests are welcome to head out to explore the reserve on their own, either on foot or bicycle.

For non-riders, opt for guided wildlife activities, including birdwatching, nature lessons, game drives, guided walks, archery and conservation sessions. In the evenings there will be the chance to discuss with your guide or the lodge manager which activities you will take part in the following day.

Kids are welcome at Kambaku and tailor-made activities can be arranged for families. Riding lessons are available, and families can head out on the trail together to experience the magic of a horse safari. Guided walks and Archery lessons are always a highlight. There is a large play area for children, while parents can relax in the gardens.

DAY 1 - ARRIVAL & LODGE WELCOME

Arrive at Windhoek Airport and embark on a scenic 4-hour journey to Kambaku Safari Lodge. Upon arrival, receive a warm welcome, and your guide will escort you to a comfortable room and give you a tour of the lodge.

Spend the afternoon settling in, having a nap or diving into the pool. Then it’s time for afternoon tea, which is always a highlight on safari. You’ll meet your guides and fellow adventurers. In the evening, head out for a game drive to explore the reserve and enjoy your sundowner drinks!

There is time to relax before dinner is served. You can freshen up in your room, or head to the firepit and enjoy a drink. The firepit overlooks the waterhole; you never know what wildlife you might spot. Weather permitting, enjoy a delightful supper on the lodge’s scenic roof terrace, or dine in the cozy indoor dining room with the roaring fire.

DAY 2 - MORNING RIDE & AFTERNOON EXPLORATION

Welcome the dawn with a cup of coffee on the veranda before embarking on a horseback adventure through the bush and open savannah. You’ll head out in different directions each day, following the sandy tracks in search of wildlife. Your guides will tell you all about the incredible animals found in this reserve, and you’ll get to fully embrace the wilderness on horseback.

You’ll return to the stables with plenty of time to freshen up. Breakfast is served on the veranda, offering gorgeous views. Spend the rest of the morning relaxing in the garden or enjoying a refreshing swim in the pool. Spa treatments can be booked, or you are welcome to go for a walk or cycle on your own.

Lunch in the lodge gardens precedes a siesta to beat the afternoon heat. Afternoon tea is served on the terrace, setting the stage for another exciting ride, game drive or guided walk.  Return to the lodge for a relaxing shower before meeting fellow guests in the bar for drinks. Share the day’s adventures over a delicious three-course supper under the inky African sky.

DAY 3 - BUSH BREAKFAST & AFTERNOON LEISURE

Embark on a morning ride or game drive, followed by a bush breakfast under a shady tree. Return to the lodge for lunch and a leisurely afternoon, offering various activities like mountain biking or walking. Afternoon tea precedes another wildlife activity, ensuring you end your day sharing highlights around the fire pit with newfound friends.

DAY 4 & 5: MORNING RIDE & MOUNTAIN BIKING

Opt for a morning ride through active game areas or drive to a scenic reserve viewpoint. Explore the reserve further on a mountain bike before lunch and a relaxing afternoon. Afternoon tea leads to another safari ride or wildlife activity – There is one ride a day included within your package, but you are welcome to add more. Savor a three-course supper and unwind around the fire pit, exchanging stories and enjoying the ‘bushman’s TV’.

DAY 6 - SUNRISE SAFARI & SPECIAL EVENING RIDE

Start the day with an early morning horseback safari, tailoring the ride’s length and speed based on your experience and preferences. Return for breakfast and a leisurely morning, followed by additional activities. Afternoon tea precedes your final safari ride, often featuring giraffes and a spectacular sundowner experience.

DAY 7: ESTOSHA NATIONAL PARK DAY EXPEDITION

For those who pre-booked Etosha visits, gather early for coffee before embarking on a 2-hour journey. Explore Etosha’s abundant wildlife and expansive salt pan, with almost guaranteed game sightings, you are in for an exciting day. This is the perfect opportunity to look out for bigger wildlife such as elephants, rhinos, and event lions. It also offers some incredible photographic moments! Return to Kambaku for supper.

DAY 8: DEPARTURE AND ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES

Depart or explore optional activities like additional wildlife programmes and rides. Customise your final day based on preferences – Either heading back to Windhoek or your next adventure. We can happily tailor-made longer packages for you.

HORSE RIDING & LESSONS

Kambaku’s horses are well-trained for adventurous cross-country rides for experienced riders, but also help less confident riders experience the magic of a horse safari.  For those who wish, you can book riding lessons with trainers in order to progress in dressage work or jumping gymnastics. Lessons also offer occasional riders a good opportunity to gain confidence again by “getting back in the saddle” before setting off on long safari rides.

GAME DRIVES

Game drives in specially designed 4x4s is offered in the morning and evening. This is a tour of discovery to track and observe wild animals. You’ll have a dedicated field guide who will teach you about the different vegetation and wildlife.

GUIDED WALKS

Experience the savannah from a different perspective on our bush walks. Your experienced field guide will teach you to discern the differences between different animal tracks and their characteristics, teaching you the art of tracking. They’ll alos tell you more about the vegetation, the naturopathy of the locals and the cultural history of Namibia.

DISCOVER KAMBAKU ON YOUR OWN

There is a 60km network of walking and cycling trails for those who want to explore on their own. On various routes, winding paths lead you through the bush and you’ll even find some hidden little benches where you can rest and get your mind wander. You can stay in the reserve for hours or just take a little evening stroll.

FAMILY SAFARIS

We can tailor-make your stay to include great activities for the entire family. There are riding lessons and trail rides (with their parents) for children of all ages. Kids can also join on game drives and guided walks. Parents are welcome to take their children on non-guided walks on cycles on the reserve. Kambaku also offers archery lessons, and a large play area keeps young ones entertained. Full-day nanny for children of all ages is offered and gives parents time for activities and day trips on their own.

BUSH SLEEP OUT

For those wanting something a little different, you can have a bush sleep out. It’s great to do on horseback, as you’ll ride there in the evening light, and then just let your horses lose to wander back to the stables on their own. The little camp, consists of just 3 tents on raised platforms, with an outdoor dining area and a private, yet open-air bathroom. While your guide prepares a braai (BBQ), feel free to explore the camp and get settled. Tuck into roasted meats and fresh salads prepared by the team. Then get lost in the glow of the fire and the starry sky of Africa above you – a perfect night…

As you snuggle up in your sleeping bag and heed the night wind and strange sounds, your guide will watch over you. In the morning, you wake up to the smell of coffee before you start the day with breakfast bread baked on the fire, boiled eggs and orange juice. On a nature hike, read the tracks of the animals that roamed around your tents at night and spot wildlife during a walk to the waterhole. Then hop into a jeep to take you back to the lodge.

HOW WE CARE FOR OUR HORSES

Our horseback adventures are hand-picked for their quality and care of their horses. Here’s how the horses at Kambaku  are kept in tip-top shape for your safaris. Our horses are on top of the hierarchy and receive very special care:

  • Our horses live out in a herd environment, allowing them to live as naturally as possible.
  • During the day, they have large enclosures where they can graze freely, often nose to nose with curious antelope, wildebeest, warthog and the occasional giraffe.
  • They come in 2 to 3 times a day to be fed and groomed by the team, ensuring they are happy and healthy
  • Every six weeks a farrier visits our horses for a proper hoof treatment and once per year an equine dentist checks their teeth.
  • Vaccinations and deworming take place regularly
  • All horses regularly meet an equine physiotherapist for treatment and massages.
  • To keep them healthy and in shape but also motivated and easy to ride, the team focuses on varied training with lungeing and groundwork next to riding sessions in the arena, and of course long trail rides out in the bush. They use a special app to monitor the training sessions.
  • Breaks also are part of the training plan, as time to recover is essential for physical and mental health.
  • There is a  professional horse trainer onsite and a FN licensed instructor for riding lessons for our trainees, guides and of course motivated riding guests
  • Horses are carefully selected for their breeds, ages, personalities and heights to suit various riding levels and rider preferences

Please let us know if you have any more questions about this.

Top 12 places to see the sea in and around St. Petersburg

kambaku safari lodge namibia

The following are good places to take in the “water” (full disclosure: rivers and lakes have also made this list). By no means is this a complete list of the offerings near St. Petersburg , but it could provide an ambitious roadmap for a summer well spent. The first six are located in the Resort District (Kurortny Raion) in the northwestern part of St. Petersburg, while the latter six are scattered in and around the city.

Tarkhovka

  Source: instagram zebra (@lizachkazebreva)

The sandy beach at Tarkhovka is not on most people’s radars, but it is open to the public and provides a great view of the fortress at Kronstadt across the Finnish Gulf . This first “water” stop into the Resort District is just a short ride by car, bus or an “eletrichka” train from Finlyandsky train station (a good option on summer weekends due to traffic). There is water access on both sides, as Sestroretsky Razliv Lake lies just inland from the train tracks and Primorskoe highway.

Sestroretsk

  Source: instagram (@vasiliygvozdarev)

Featuring some of the most popular beaches in St. Petersburg , there are also numerous hotels, bars, restaurants, health spas and sanitoriums, with the oldest – the Sestroretsky Resort – dating back to 1898. You can access the water from Dubki Park in the center of town and from there the coastline of the Finnish Gulf extends north. If you walk far enough you will hit “Dyuny” (Dunes) a popular nude beach.

  Source: instagram (@m1nochrome)

Laskovy beach is another gem of St. Petersburg ’s coastline and is packed with sunbathers on hot summer days. But it is also popular as a picnic spot in the off-season. Much of the rest of the coastline here is fairly rocky (especially after storms throw stones around), although equally beautiful. Like many settlements along the coast here, Solnechoe is growing fast, with its population increasing nearly 50 percent since 2002.

  Source: instagram (@vasiinka)

Besides hosting the museum complex to the great Russian painter Ilya Repin , Repino also features a popular beach, several restaurants and 14 spas, resorts and sanatoriums. Take in the museum , have a meal and go for a swim.

  Source: instagram @familyguru

Komarovo ’s relaxed atmosphere, forests and ample beachfronts have attracted city dwellers for generations. There are a few restaurants that operate on the beach in summer, although Komarovo is far enough away from the city to deter some day-trippers compared to the closer options.

Zelenogorsk

  Source: instagram (@rustfu)
  Source: instagram (@seefrau_hexe)

Kronstadt is actually a city and naval fortress on an island called Kotlin. Famous for being the site of an anti-Bolshevik rebellion in 1921, today this pleasant town offers several great spots to take in a sea view, with the south side flanked by three harbors. Be sure to check out the Naval Cathedral and the Damba , an enormous 25-kilometer dam complex that spans the Finnish Gulf and protects St. Petersburg from flooding. It cuts through the island offering some great views.

Peter and Paul Fortress

  Source: instagram (@irishaanisimova)

The most popular beach in the city center, people flock here any day of the year that there is sun. Located on the Neva River side of the fortress , in the summer it is packed, not surprising considering how small the beach actually is. For me summer in St. Petersburg and a trip to the beach here to gaze out at the grandeur of the city are inseparable associations.

Krestovsky Island

  Source: instagram (@divo_ostrov)

Another good option within the heart of the city, this is one of St. Petersburg’s most tranquil districts on weekdays when there are few tourists. Its long coastline is situated between several tributaries of the Neva River and provides ample space for taking in a sunset or having a picnic.

Park dedicated to the 300 Years of St. Petersburg

  Source: instagram (@yanaseu)

St. Petersburg’s youngest park was built to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the city’s founding. It is probably also the busiest place to take in a sea view as the territory is covered by fountains, statues, 300 crabapple trees (a gift from the city of Helsinki), a lighthouse, a wave pool and even hosts a diving school.

Kanonersky Island

  Source: instagram (@evgesha_krivoshein)

The site of some of St. Petersburg’s main customs buildings, for some this may represent an unlikely choice. However, if you walk around long enough you can find a relatively private corner for a picnic. Located near the city center this island is a bit rough around the edges with no infrastructure for tourists, however, it offers great views of the Finnish Gulf and the boat traffic coming into the harbor.
