MOKB Presents

Growing up in Ohio, Knox’s whole existence before he ever wrote a song was basketball, soundtracked by artists such as Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco, All-American Rejects, and Ed Sheeran. The summer before he started at Ohio University, Knox finally picked up a guitar. He learned everything in a few months, through YouTube videos. Knox began playing open mic nights and by his sophomore year, his musical ambitions were so all-consuming that he dropped out of school, moved in with his grandma and saved up money to move to Nashville. He made the leap in January 2019. Knox used covid isolation to work on his craft. The focus paid off: his songs caught the attention of John Harvie, who placed a few on his album. Knox signed a publishing deal in 2022 but was struck with the urge to record some songs he had been working on. The result was How to Lose a Girl in 7 Songs, Knox’s debut EP, released this past February. With his own songs ready, he now looked to build a fanbase. Knox filmed TikToks featuring his song “Sneakers”, and 1 amassed nearly 2 million views overnight. “Sneakers” now has over 23 million streams. Knox has since began touring, opening for the Band Camino & Boys Like Girls. “I’m 6 states away from home and there’s a thousand people in the audience that are singing the song that I wrote with my friends in my bedroom. That’s when it gets you, when you see people connecting to something that I made with my best friends. It’s the most unreal feeling in the world.”

An Exclusive Interview with Knox and His Latest Single ‘Not The 1975’

Inside the music: an exclusive interview with rising singer-songwriter knox, unveiling his latest single 'not the 1975', creative process, alexa cappelli collaboration, and nightly tour excitement.

Knox - Courtesy of Acacia Evans

Based in Nashville, Tennessee, Knox is a talented singer-songwriter rapidly ascending within the music industry. Within the last year and a half, he has signed to Atlantic Records and built a strong fanbase via TikTok, with one of his videos featuring his hit track “ Sneakers ” reaching nearly 2 million views overnight. “Sneakers” now has over 23 million streams across streaming platforms.

The Knockturnal had a chance to interview Knox, where we delved into his creative process for his latest single, “Not The 1975”, an upcoming support tour, and his latest projects.

The Dayton, Ohio native recently released his latest single, “ Not The 1975 “, a concept based on an interaction he had at a bar. Knox mentioned how he and his team had written three versions of the original track. Within the chorus, the line “I like your confidence, but you’re not The 1975” inspired Knox to pay homage to and intertwine popular songs from the alternative and infamous band, The 1975’s discography, such as “Chocolate” and “Oh Caroline.” “Not The 1975” is enriched with clever references from The 1975’s music, adding intrigue for fans of both artists. Without a doubt, the track carries various guitar riffs and instrumentals, emulating a mix between The 1975’s music and a personal touch of Knox’s distinct pop-punk-rock sound.

Inspired by favorite artists and songwriters, including big pop names such as Ed Sheeran, Julia Michaels, and Lauv, Knox also grew up to a compilation of pop-punk-rock “scene” influences, a list including Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, and All-American Rejects. “Not the 1975” is the perfect in-between of that rock music, but also straight down the middle, pop-radio.” He noted.

Knox teamed up alongside viral pop-singer songwriter and former contestant from The Voice season 14, Alexa Cappelli , for their mesmerizing duet “ Backwards .” In our interview, Knox talks about the collaborative experience with Alexa and the creative process behind the song that brought it to life in their music video.

The Nashville-based singer-songwriter carries an impressive track record of supporting multiple artists on tour, such as The Band Camino, Boys Like Girls, and Bilmuri. This fall, Knox will perform at some of the country’s most iconic and intimate music venues to support the alternative-pop band, Nightly , for their Wear Your Heart Out tour—venues such as the Fonda Theatre in LA, the 930 Club in DC, and more.

In February, the 25-year-old released his debut EP  How to Lose a Girl in 7 Songs . Knox expressed his excitement for being able to bring the EP to life on tour later this year. “I haven’t seen how the project has affected people. I haven’t been able to see it in person. I had one headline show that was amazing. We sold it out in 10 minutes. Everyone knew every word when they showed up.”

Knox elaborated on songs such as “NYC,” “Porch Lights,” and “Hate My Guts.” He expressed his eagerness to shine a light on the tracks on tour and to resonate with audiences in person. “I get to wake up and live my dream that I’ve thought about since I was seventeen. My dream as a child is literally (now) a reality, and it is nothing without the people that wake up every day and turn these songs on.”

Knox stands as one of the most authentic and genuine rising artists in the music scene and is immensely grateful for his platform, supporters, and career as a musician. Knox mentions how grateful he is for his supporters and how he can make music in his favorite city as his career. “I want to meet everybody. I want to stay after the shows and take pictures with everybody. I wanna hug these people and tell them thank you.” Knox tells us. His passion for his craft and authenticity reflects throughout the interview.

Mallory Knox are a band hailing from Cambridge, United Kingdom who formed in 2009. Since their debut they have released two studio albums and made a name for themselves as one of the most exciting British rock bands of their generation.

The band was put together around the partnership of lead guitarist Joe Savins and drummer Dave Rawling, who came together in August 2009. Together, they set about poaching a number of musicians from other local bands around the Cambridge scene until they'd settled on bassist Sam Douglas, rhythm guitarist James Gillet and vocalist Mikey Chapman to join them. After taking their name from a character in the Oliver Stone film Natural Born Killers, the band hunkered down for three months to begin writing their own material. By November the band had begun playing live around their local scene, and were so impressive three months into their existence as a band that they were invited into Studio Glasseye by producer Dan Lancaster to record their debut EP “Pilot”.

The EP itself was enough to get the band signed to Wolf At Your Door Records on its release in July 2010, and the band embarked on their first UK tour soon afterwards supporting Never Means Maybe. By 2011, the band were playing their first headline tours around the U.K, and in 2012 they began releasing a hugely acclaimed run of singles beginning with “Hello” and ending with “Wake Up” before the release of “Signals”, their debut album in January 2013. By 2014, after concerts supporting everyone from A Day To Remember to Biffy Clyro, the band had become one of the hottest prospects in British rock. This was certified by selling out two nights at London's Electric Ballroom off the back of their second album “Asymmetry” while being supported by My Chemical Romance legend Frank Iero.

The sky is truly the limit for these guys, and with the rude health that British rock is in, there's no reason why they can't follow in the footsteps of Bring Me The Horizon and You Me At Six to become one of the biggest rock bands in the country. For that, they come highly recommended.

Live reviews

I've been listening to the Knox for a few months and had had to miss their concert at the legendary Leeds Cockpit earlier in 2014. Now the 'Pit is sadly no longer I managed to catch them last night at the newly named LBU Students' Union.

Arriving after opening act Moose Blood had packed up and in the first song of First Hope's set we were welcomed with passable opening act fare, if a little overwhelmed with the frontman's insistence on operatic vocal acrobatics that even Brice Dickinson wouldn't claim to be capable of even prior to 30 years in the biz!

Next up was Frnk Iero & the Celebration. The new vehicle for the former My Chemical Romance guitarist certainly had its (very vocal) supporters but I just didn't get it sadly - it was 30 minutes of badly played out of tune noise....

Then almost on the stroke of 21:30 to the Champions League intro music came forth the Cambridge quintet of Mallory Knox.

What followed was a whirlwind tour of their 2 full studio albums and EP Pilot of melodic metal-lite. Mikey Chapman is almost (in my opinion) too polite to be a metal front man. Don't get me wrong, I've yet to meet a music fan that doesn't like to feel that a band really appreciates their turning out (and MK make their gratitude known) but British sensibilities can get the better of a band and they can become ineffectual in their politeness. It's great to know a band doesn't forget how hard the struggle has been though but I like a front man to have an ego - not be a douche/dick - but be self assured (Benji Webbe of Skindred or Bruce Dickinson of Maiden being great examples).

For his part Mikey was largely out of breath but battled on manfully! The mainly student based populace of LBU's Student Union worked the poor bugger hard last night out-singing him on tracks like Beggars, 1949, alongside newer tracks like Ghost in the Mirror, current single Shout at the Moon and the hauntingly sweet She TookHim to the Lake.

And in these tunes Mallory Knox have carved a niche out for themselves. A place in between the heaviness and brutality of bands like Machine Head, Skindred et al and the dire pop mediocrity of Fall Out Boy etc. Radio friendly, catchy yet still with that rock/metal edge to bring in a smorgasbord of fans. Keep it up and they could be the unfulfilled potential band in this sector. There's clear sing-along-ability in a Mallory Knox lyric (though maybe a few too many wooo-ooo-ohhhooo-oooos). Round it all off with a brief acoustic encore and a set-closing bravissimo performance of seminal song Lighthouses and you'd have to be the Grinch (it's almost that time!) not to at least nod your head and politely clap at at a very solid set... And a rapturous and well deserved thanks did they receive.

From a pure live performance perspective expect to bounce and sing along - don't expect to get battered and bruised in a mosh pit - Leeds was far too gentile for that. And the band themselves maybe need to develop that fine line elevation in ego that allows them to accept that place on stage as the worshipped . It can be a tough seat to fill but I think crowds need challenging. if they paid to come to see you, you should work them hard for their energy sweat and signing voices!

In fairness to MK I've seen Skindred and Rise Against this month already so comparisons can be tough, even if the bands are very different....

Despite being relative newcomers to the music world, Cambridge natives Mallory Knox are certainly off to a strong start. Nominated for Best British Newcomers in 2009, the band is proving with every new song they put out there, that when it comes to versatility and talent, these guys are the real deal. Mallory Knox is classified as an alternative rock band, but their sound, their 2013 album ‘Signals’ and their shows demonstrate they are capable of smashing so many different styles within the umbrella genre of rock.

Due to the band’s nuanced songs and versatility, a Mallory Knox show takes on a multitude of different vibes. The guys can take you up like a rocket, have you rocking hard and lower you back down to a relaxing plateaux all within the space of three songs. Pretty impressive. Mikey Chapman on vocals is a natural front man, and his cheeky onstage persona is a nice counterbalance to some of the bands heavier hardcore songs such as ‘Oceans’. With their new album ‘Asymmetry’ due out this month, prepare yourself for a slew of awesome concerts on the horizon. If ‘Ghost in the Mirror’ is anything to go by, this next album is going to be epic and I can’t wait to hear it performed live. Watch out for Mallory Knox, they’re going places for sure and I’d recommend seeing them in concert now during this exciting rise to fame.

Mallory Knox are just too good! I have been to see this band twice now and both times they have stunned mr with their brilliant music and catchy lyrics. Live, Mikey's voice is no different to that heard recorded with every not echoing around the room with hundreds singing back every lyric.

The band are tight together live too with no mistakes on stage and they performed perfectly. The set list had a beautiful mixture of old and new songs starting with the new QOD II which was received brilliantly with plenty jumping and shouting the lyrics back. Mid way through the set they celebrated their first EP by mixing Resuscitate with Ocians which too was met by circle pits.

Through the set you could really see what this progress to the bigger stage meant to them with being met by smiles on stage from the band ad they enjoyed the time as much as me. Finishing with their most known song Lighthouse the crowd went full throttle and exploded into jumping and mosh pits.

It's safe to say. Mallory Knox are beautiful

Each time I see mallory knox, it gets better and better. They play so well as a group that it tops the recorded versions of the songs, which is saying something! Every song is brilliant, old and new. The set lists are so well thought out; they are a great mix of brand new songs, and songs from previous albums and EP's. They have slower songs and faster songs that are all great to listen to and really get you up and bouncing. The atmosphere at anywhere they play is electric, never a quiet room when mallory knox are there. One of the coolest things for me has to be the fact that after the show they meet the fans outside and are happy for you to take photos with them. They are such nice guys that you could easily just stand chatting with any of them for hours- if only! They really appreciate their fans, which for me is always a great thing. Where ever they play, there's bound to be great music, great people, great times.

This was the first time i had travelled to see Mallory Knox, i did have to travel from Nottingham to Leeds to see them, but they were so worth it. I was disappointed with the support bands, as i felt they didn't really follow their style of music. So i just drank instead, which being at a Uni union, felt quite old, dare i say it, but it was a good laugh. Mallory Know came on with a BIG entrance, to which i jumped my way to the front. They were incredible, their voices, the music, sounded as it did in your living room, with their own twist of vocals (so you know he can sing live) there wasn't alot of chit chat which i like, song after song after song, they had the whole crowd involved. They were amazing to listen to (and to look at) and would defiantly go and see these boys again.

As soon as the dates were announced for Mallory Knox, I knew I had to get a ticket.

I had seen them before but had to see them again as they're incredible live!

They opened up with the brilliant single 'Shout at the Moon' from their latest record 'Asymmetry'. The majority of the setlist was in fact from last years record with 10 songs lifted from it and all of their 5 singles being aired.

The likes of Getaway, Death Rattle, Dare You & She Took Him To The Lake sounded huge & Mikey's voice was on point throughout.

They closed with the amazing single 'Lighthouse' from 2013's record 'Signals'. It was a brilliant ending to a brilliant show.

If you're unsure or undecided on whether to attend a Mallory Knox show, I strongly suggest you go to one, you won't regret it!

This was my first and last time seeing Mallory-knox as they are unfortunately calling it a day and I wanted to see them before they did. It was a relatively small venue, but local to me which was great. I was particularly keen on this gig as I liked both support acts - The Alchemy and Led by lanterns - both were great and deserved headline slots of their own as they have great material and work the crowds really well. Unfortunately in my opinion, Mallory-knox did not perform with the same gusto as the support acts which was disappointing, however, I still enjoyed the show.

kelly-edwards-7’s profile image

I saw them at Warped 2015's Toronto date, and it was amazing. Considering they had only 30 minutes on stage, they did an amazing job of getting people singing along and jumping in the crowd. Aside from being slammed into the barrier by a drunk guy, it was most definitely my favourite part of the evening ^_^

cemeteryaesthetic’s profile image

They were amazing, they sounded just as good live as in recordings with even more energy.

Would definitely see them again. Supporting acts were also very good and relevant to mallory knox

Taylor Swift's 'Tortured Poets' album references The Blue Nile. Who is the Scottish band?

knox band tour

Taylor Swift's new album "THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT" is full of name drops and allusions. The album's ninth track mentions the Scottish band The Blue Nile, a group with a surprising Knoxville connection.

Swift's "Guilty as Sin?" opens with a reference to The Blue Nile and their song "The Downtown Lights": "Drowning in the Blue Nile / He sent me Downtown Lights / I hadn't heard it in a while / My boredom's bone deep / This cage was once just fine / Am I allowed to cry?"

The song "The Downtown Lights " came out on The Blue Nile's album "Hats," which was released in 1989 - both Swift's birth year and the title of her fifth studio album . Swift's re-recording of "1989" was her most recent release prior to "THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT."

Why did Taylor Swift mention The Blue Nile? And does Matty Healy have anything to do with it?

Some fans and news outlets have speculated that the allusion, and the song as a whole, point toward Matty Healy, lead singer of the band The 1975 , who it's believed dated Swift in 2023. Healy's certainly a fan of their music.

"The Blue Nile are my favorite band of all time," Healy said in a 2016 Vulture interview.

Who is The Blue Nile?

The Blue Nile, an alternative pop trio formed out of Glasgow, Scotland in 1981, consists of bassist Robert Bell, singer Paul Buchanan and keyboardist P. J. Moore, according to Pitchfork .

They released their debut album "A Walk Across the Rooftops" in 1984, which has "signals of what would later become known as sophisti-pop," according to Stereogum . But "Hats," which features "The Downtown Lights," is far and away the group's greatest success.

What is The Blue Nile's connection to Knoxville?

The band performed at the now-closed Knoxville venue Ella Guru's in August 1990, the News Sentinel reported the same year. Their stop in Knoxville was part of the group's first tour, for their second album "Hats." Tickets to that show were just $8 at the time.

Frontman Buchanan was self-depricating, according to the News Sentinel's profile prior to the band's local performance. "Buchanan would never admit that the dream-like, poetically passionate music he and his friends have created is good."

The Blue Nile's time in Knoxville turned out to have a lasting legacy. Their stop in the Scruffy City was immortalized in the 30-minute documentary "Flags and Fences," which follows their '90s American tour. But for many years, it wasn't possible to see.

"Flags and Fences," created by Bernard Rudden, was for a long time thought to be lost, but a copy was eventually located by Trevor Ward, according to IMDb. Now, the full documentary can be found on YouTube . Although the footage is quite grainy, more than one shot has clearly been captured in Knoxville.

The outside of Ella Guru's, which was located in the Old City, is visible several times throughout "Flags and Fences," and some scenes provide different angles of North Central Street. The tower that now belongs to Lonesome Dove, along with the nearby Coca-Cola mural, are some of the more recognizable landmarks.

Dave Wilson shared memories of The Blue Nile's time in Knoxville in a comment on their Facebook post sharing the documentary in 2015. His copy of "Hats" was signed by each band member, and footage of the interaction can be found in the documentary. "We met at Ella Guru's in Knoxville, Tennessee," Wilson wrote.

Newbury Park school band seeks public's help finding or replacing stolen instruments

Sid Garcia Image

NEWBURY PARK, Calif. (KABC) -- Students at a Newbury Park high school are asking the public for help after thieves stole nearly $25,000 worth of instruments after a concert this weekend.

The student musicians with Newbury Park Adventist Academy had just performed in Chula Vista Saturday night as part of a weekend music tour when someone broke into their rental truck at the La Quinta Inn.

School officials say between $20,000 to $25,000 worth of instruments were stolen.

"We had one set of bells that is particularly pricey to replace and a euphonium worth probably about $6,000," the school's principal Joel Albritton said.

Chula Vista police are investigating the theft.

Despite the bad outcome, Albritton hopes that students use this as a life lesson.

"We are most interested in making sure students understand that bad things are going to happen in their lives. The question is, how are they going to respond?"

His students have responded by reaching out to the community for help.

According to the school band's Instagram , students are seeking help finding instruments for their next performance but welcome other donations too.

Billie Eilish is dropping into Fortnite.

The Grammy and Oscar-winning recording artist has become a playable character for Fortnite Festival, a rhythm-based music game not unlike Rock Band. Eilish, 22, announced her imminent arrival to the virtual game's main stage in a post Monday on X that included a picture of her character in the game.

After teasing the partnership, Epic Games, the developer behind the massively popular online video game best known for its Battle Royale mode, released more details Tuesday.

Here's what to know about Eilish's role in the Fortnite Festival.

What is the Fortnite Festival?

Epic Games worked with Rock Band developer  Harmonix to add a musical mode called Fortnite Festival to the in-game experience in 2023.

Eilish is just the latest among a slate of stars, including Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande and The Weeknd , who have since graced the game's virtual main stage. Similar to Rock Band, the game mode allows players to join with up to three others to play a licensed soundtrack of hits songs and Fortnite originals on instruments of their choice.

If past events are any indication, players can likely expect to play as Eilish on the main stage performing her top hits that may include “ Happier Than Ever ,” “Therefore I Am” and “Oxytocin.”

As players progress through Season 3 of the Fortnite Festival, they can unlock rewards that include instruments, outfits and new songs to perform, according to Epic Games . Among those unlockable rewards is Eilish's neon green character skin and two Eilish-themed Instruments – a keytar and a microphone.

Season 3 ends June 13.

Billie Eilish's big year, from Oscar win to new album

Eilish has earned no shortage of accolades and awards ever since she burst into the music scene in 2019 with her debut album "When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?"

The singer/songwriter has racked up nine Grammy wins and two Oscars, the latest of which came in March when she and her brother Finneas' melancholy ballad from the "Barbie" movie, "What Was I Made For?" won best original song.

Eilish has also revealed that her third album – and first since 2021's Grammy-nominated "Happier Than Ever" – is on the way. "Hit Me Hard and Soft" will arrive May 17 .

NEW YORK (AP) — Heart — the pioneering band that melds Nancy Wilson’s shredding guitar with her sister Ann’s powerhouse vocals — is hitting the road this spring and fall for a world tour that Nancy Wilson describes as “the full-on rocker size.”

“I’ve been strengthening. I’ve got my trainer,” she says. “You go one day at a time and you strengthen one workout session at a time. It’s a lot of work, but it’s the only job I know how to do.”

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers who gave us classic tracks like “Magic Man,” “Crazy on You” and “Alone” will be playing all the hits, some tracks from of their solo albums — like Ann Wilson’s “Miss One and Only” and Nancy Wilson’s “Love Mistake” — and a new song called “Roll the Dice.”

“I like to say we have really good problems because the problem we have is to choose between a bunch of different, really cool songs that people love already,” says Nancy Wilson.

Like “Barracuda,” a sonic burst which first appeared on the band’s second album, “Little Queen” and is one of the band’s most memorable songs.

“You can’t mess with ‘Barracuda.’ It’s just the way it is. It is great. You get on the horse and you ride. It’s a galloping steed of a ride to go on. And for everybody, including the band.”

The tour kicks off Saturday at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina, and will hit cities including Atlanta, Boston, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Detroit, as well as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado. International dates include stops in London, Oslo, Berlin, Stockholm, Montreal and Glasgow.

The band’s Royal Flush Tour will have Cheap Trick as the opening act for many stops, but Def Leppard and Journey will join for three stadium dates in Cleveland, Toronto and Boston this summer.

Ann and Nancy Wilson will be filled out by Ryan Wariner (lead and rhythm guitar), Ryan Waters (guitars), Paul Moak (guitars, keyboards and backing vocals), Tony Lucido (bass and backing vocals) and Sean T. Lane (drums).

The tour is the first in several years for Heart, which was rocked by a body blow in 2016 when Ann Wilson’s husband was arrested for assaulting Nancy’s 16-year-old twin sons. Nancy Wilson says that’s all in the past.

“We can take any kind of turbulence, me and Ann, and we’ve always been OK together,” she says. “We’re still steering the ship and happy to do it together. So we’re tight.”

The new tour will take them to Canada, which was warm to the band when they were starting out as what Nancy Wilson calls “a couple of chicks from Seattle.” She recalls Vancouver embracing Heart, and touring in one van across Canada in the dead of winter on two lane highways.

The Wilson sisters broke rock’s glass ceiling in the ‘70s and Nancy Wilson says they only had male influences to look to, like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Moody Blues.

Now she says she looks out and loves seeing generations of female rockers. “You have boygenius and you have Billie Eilish and you have Olivia Rodrigo and so many amazing women — Maggie Rogers and Sheryl Crow, who calls us her big influence. And then Billie Eilish might have Sheryl Crow as her influence. So it’s a really nice legacy to pass along. I like to say we’re the OG — the original gangsters — of women and rock.”

Heart has made it into the Rock Hall, won Grammys, sold millions of albums and rocked hundreds of thousands of fans but Nancy Wilson has one place she’d still like to shine.

Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of their debut album, “Dreamboat Annie,” which was the same year that “Saturday Night Live” started. “So we’re actually kind of putting it out there — Heart never played on ‘Saturday Night Live.’ But what about the 50th birthday party with Heart?”

Dickey Betts, Allman Brothers Band co-founder and legendary guitarist, dies at 80

Updated on: April 18, 2024 / 8:38 PM EDT / AP

Guitar legend Dickey Betts, who co-founded the Allman Brothers Band and wrote their biggest hit, "Ramblin' Man," has died. He was 80.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer died at his home in Osprey, Florida, David Spero, Betts' manager of 20 years, confirmed. Betts had been battling cancer for more than a year and had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Spero said.

"He was surrounded by his whole family and he passed peacefully. They didn't think he was in any pain," Spero said by phone.

Betts shared lead guitar duties with Duane Allman in the original Allman Brothers Band to help give the group its distinctive sound and create a new genre — Southern rock. Acts ranging from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Kid Rock were influenced by the Allmans' music, which combined the blues, country, R&B and jazz with '60s rock.

DICKEY BETTS-DECESO

Founded in 1969, the Allmans were a pioneering jam band, trampling the traditional notion of three-minute pop songs by performing lengthy compositions in concert and on record. The band was also notable as a biracial group from the Deep South.

Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident in 1971, and founding member Berry Oakley was killed in a motorcycle crash a year later. That left Betts and Allman's younger brother Gregg as the band's leaders, but they frequently clashed, and substance abuse caused further dysfunction. The band broke up at least twice before reforming, and has had more than a dozen lineups.

The Allman Brothers Band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and earned a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 2012. Betts left the group for good in 2000, and also played solo and with his own band Great Southern, which included his son, guitarist Duane Betts.

Forrest Richard Betts was born Dec. 12, 1943, and was raised in the Bradenton, Florida, area, near the highway 41 he sang about in "Ramblin' Man." His family had lived in area since the mid-19th century.

Betts grew up listening to country, bluegrass and Western swing, and played the ukulele and banjo before focusing on the electric guitar because it impressed girls. At 16 he left home for his first road trip, joining the circus to play in a band.

He returned home, and with bassist Oakley joined a group that became the Jacksonville, Florida-based band Second Coming. One night in 1969 Betts and Oakley jammed with Duane Allman, already a successful session musician, and his younger brother, and together they formed the Allman Brothers Band.

The group moved to Macon, Georgia, and released a self-titled debut album in 1969. A year later came the album "Idlewild South," highlighted by Betts' instrumental composition "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," which soon became a concert staple.

The 1971 double album "At Fillmore East," now considered among the greatest live albums of the classic rock era, was the Allmans' commercial breakthrough and cemented their performing reputation by showcasing the unique guitar interplay between Allman and Betts. Their styles contrasted, with Allman playing bluesy slide guitar, while Betts' solos and singing tugged the band toward country. When layered in harmony, their playing was especially distinctive.

The group also had two drummers — "Jaimoe" Johanson, who is Black, and Butch Trucks.

Duane Allman died four days after "Fillmore" was certified as a gold record, but the band carried on and crowds continued to grow. The 1973 album "Brothers and Sisters" rose to No. 1 on the charts and featured "Ramblin' Man," with Betts singing the lead and bringing twang to the Top 40. The song reached No. 2 on the singles charts and was kept out of the No. 1 spot by "Half Breed" by Cher, who later married Gregg Allman.

The soaring sound of Betts' guitar on "Ramblin' Man" reverberated in neighborhood bars around the country for decades, and the song underscored his knack for melodic hooks. "Ramblin' Man" was the Allmans' only Top Ten hit, but Betts' catchy 7½-minute instrumental composition "Jessica," recorded in 1972, became an FM radio staple.

Betts also wrote or co-wrote some of the band's other best-loved songs, including "Blue Sky" and "Southbound." In later years the group remained a successful touring act with Betts and Warren Haynes on guitar. Gregg Allman and Butch Trucks died in 2017.

After leaving the Allmans for good, Betts continued to play with his own group and lived in the Bradenton area with his wife, Donna.
