Racine County Kwik Trip shooting; road rage incident

One person was taken to the hospital Tuesday night, Nov. 29 following a shooting at the Kwik Trip on East Frontage Road in Racine County.

MOUNT PLEASANT, Wis. - One person was taken to the hospital Tuesday night, Nov. 29 following a shooting in the parking lot of the Kwik Trip on East Frontage Road in Racine County. Mount Plesant police were called to the scene shortly before 11 p.m. for the report of shots fired. Approximately 10 shots were heard.

Both Mount Pleasant Police Department and Racine County Sheriff’s Department arrived on-scene and conducted a search of the area and located a scene with approximately 15 spent shell casings directly in front of Kwik Trip. Investigation of the scene revealed that a 9mm weapon was used in the incident. The 9mm spent shell casings were recovered by a Mount Pleasant Evidence Technician Officer at the scene.

Upon further investigation, officers learned that both the suspect and victim, who were in two separate vehicles, entered the Kwik Trip lot, parked, exited their vehicles and appeared to be having a verbal altercation, according to witnesses. The suspect pulled a handgun and began shooting towards the victim. 

The victim, a 28-year-old man from Kenosha, suffered gunshot wounds to both legs. He remains in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries. The victim was located at Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital.  

Also struck during the shooting was a single vehicle in Racine Toyota’s Dealership lot along with a window at Burger King – both businesses are located north of Kwik Trip.

Witnesses described the shooter's vehicle as a black Toyota SUV

During the course of the investigation, it is believed this was an isolated road rage incident and there is no danger to the public. 

There are no suspects in custody at this time.

There's a new Kwik Trip planned in Menasha. Here's what we know about it: The Buzz

MENASHA - Menasha's getting a new Kwik Trip . But it won't open for a while — and some neighbors aren't happy about the location.

Demolition work has been completed at the corner of Racine Road and Ninth Street, the new location for the La Crosse-based convenience store and gas station company. 

It's on land that used to house Bubba's Pub, two homes and a landscaping company.

According to the site plan Kwik Trip submitted to the City of Menasha , it'll be an 11,120-square-foot convenience store, with an attached one-bay car wash, 10 gas pumps and two diesel pumps.

The estimated cost is $2.5 million. Kwik Trip said the location will have 28 to 35 full- and part-time employees. 

According to the company, construction is expected to start in May 2023, with a projected opening in mid-October 2023.

But the owners of A.V. Food Mart — a Citgo gas station and convenience store at 975 Racine Rd., near the new Kwik Trip location — are upset that the city is allowing a competitor so close.

Virender Singh, speaking at a Menasha Common Council last week, asked the Council, "How does bringing a large company like Kwik Trip, with over 800 stores, build a gas station next to a single-store owner and then have the store potentially close promote development?"

Singh also questioned if lower traffic volume on Racine Road in recent years merits the construction of another gas station. 

Several other neighbors spoke against the project at the meeting, though several people spoke in favor of it, as well.

Later in the meeting, the council approved an intergovernmental boundary agreement with Fox Crossing that's intended to consolidate the property for the new Kwik Trip within Menasha.

Here's what's replacing the former Kwik Trip on Wisconsin Avenue | The Buzz

GRAND CHUTE - The former Kwik Trip at 3825 W. Wisconsin Ave. is being demolished to make room for a new retail business.

The Town of Grand Chute has approved the construction of a Carpet City Flooring Center at the location.

The project includes a full redevelopment of the former Kwik Trip site, constructing a new, 10,200 square-foot building. Site access will come from a single driveway on West Wisconsin Avenue with a loading dock on the southeast corner of the building.

Carpet City was founded in Wausau in 1973 and has locations in 12 Wisconsin cities. It's the state's largest floor-covering chain.

Construction on the site has already begun. The developer, Bayland Buildings, did not respond to requests for comments on when the project would be complete.

Where can I find eclipse glasses?

Here are some places to check. Remember, some may have sold out, and not all locations may have been carrying them. Make sure any eclipse glasses you buy are legitimate and include an ISO rating, an ISO number and an address, avoid any that say "NASA Approved," and test them before you look up .

7-Eleven, Buc-ee's, Circle K and more

You may not have to go farther than the end of your street. Many convenience stores and gas stations have been carrying eclipse glasses and may still have some in stock.

Eclipse glasses have been spotted at 7-Eleven , Circle K, and Buc-ee's locations and many individual stores may have jumped on the opportunity.

Do I need to wear solar eclipse glasses?

If you plan to look directly at the sun, yes. Even a brief glance may cause temporary or permanent damage to your eyes and eyesight.

"Do NOT look at the Sun through a camera lens, telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while wearing eclipse glasses or using a handheld solar viewer," NASA advises . "The concentrated solar rays will burn through the filter and cause serious eye injury."

How can I tell if my eclipse glasses are legitimate?

If you didn't buy your eclipse glasses directly from one of the vetted venders on the AAS list or a trusted source, check the text on the glasses for the  ISO 12312-2 standard listing and the address of the company. But these can be copied.

Don't trust any glasses that say they are NASA Approved . NASA doesn't do that.

Test your glasses first by putting them on inside and looking at a strong light source. You shouldn't be able to see anything, according to the AAS, although very bright lights may show up but would be very faint.

Go outside, put them on, and look at sunlight reflections or glance at the sun very quickly. You shouldn't see anything around you and the sun should appear to be a "sharp-edged, round disk" that's comfortably bright.

Can I watch the eclipse without looking at it?

Yes! If you don't manage to get glasses in time, there are several ways to see the eclipse that won't risk your eyes with items you probably have around the home.

Anything with a round hole in it can be held up to cast an image of the eclipse onto the ground or a sheet of white paper. Pinhole projectors, colanders, a slotted spoon, a Ritz cracker, even lacing your fingers together.

Or you can look under a tree. The sun shining through tree leaves and branches creates its own pinhole projector, casting lots of little crescent-moon shapes on the ground.
