Lucknow is the capital of the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is famous for its Nawabs and Kababs. The city was the capital of the Awadh dynasty for many centuries till the British conquered it. The Awadhi Nawabs (this is how the kings or the supreme leaders of the Awadhi dynasty were addressed) built multiple monuments across the city and developed it as a hub of music, dance, art, poetry, embroidery, education, and food. The Nawabs were known for their love for food which helped the inception of Awadhi cuisine. Lucknow variation of Biryani is considered to be one of the best. Though most of its heritage monuments were destroyed in the war with the British, the city continued to thrive during the colonial era as a center of education, revolution, and urbanization. After struggling out of the post-independence hiccups, it has emerged as one of the fastest-growing planned cities while keeping its rich heritage intact.

Lucknow by Flight

Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport is situated within city limits. You can directly fly here from most Indian cities including Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore within 1-3 hrs. International flights are available from South East Asia and Middle East Asia.

~ 25-70 USD or 2-5k INR

Airport Transfer:  The airport is part of the red line of the Lucknow metro that connects the railway station and most of the city. You need to walk 100 meters straight after exiting from the terminal to reach the station. The fare is 15-60 rupees depending on your destination.

Lucknow by Train

Lucknow has two major railway stations, Lucknow Junction (LJN) and Charbagh (LKO) located opposite each other. If you are traveling by train, you will have to get down at any of these two. The stations are connected with the rest of the city and airport through the red line of Lucknow metro.

Lucknow Junction is the 2nd most important junction in northern India after Delhi. So, while departing, plan to reach at least 30 minutes before your boarding time.

Built in a combination of Mughal, Rajput, and Awadhi architecture, Charbagh Station is 100 years and is considered one of the most beautiful railway buildings in India. If you are traveling by train, make a pause to marvel at it. It can be seen from inside the metro while passing through this area.

From Agra to Lucknow by train

People sitting in the inquiry are pretty useless and have no intention to help passengers with any information. Please check train details in advance from the Indian Railways website. I can tell you this from my personal experience.

Lucknow by Road

Lucknow is well connected through highways and expressways with other cities. Delhi to Lucknow travel time is 8-9 hours. The Lucknow-Agra Expressway is the longest and best road in India. The travel time from Agra to Lucknow is 5 hours.

By Bus:

Govt run AC Volvo buses available to all nearby major cities including Delhi, Agra, Kanpur even till Nepal border. The main Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT) is in Alambagh. You can book bus tickets online or at the counters in the bus station.

Public Transport in Lucknow

Lucknow is a huge city. All attractions are sparsely located.

Cab aggregators like Uber, Ola are easily available throughout the city. Use them for your transport from/to the airport, railway stations, sights located outside the old city center. Streets in the old city are congested. It will be difficult to take cabs in areas like Chowk, Aminabad. Getting a spot for parking is next to impossible.

If you are on a budget, use the metro. Metro runs frequently between 6 am to 10 pm. It covers a large area including the airport, railway stations, and ISBT. You will love the stonework, paintings installed in all metro stations. There is no metro in the old city center. You can find the Lucknow metro route here .

We were in Lucknow during Dec 2020 and boarded the metro only during the day. The stations are huge and the number of people traveling was less. Though I saw multiple security cameras and guards were installed, please be careful during the late hours.

The best way to explore the city center is by an autorickshaw or a tempo. Roads in old Lucknow are narrow and congested. No one follows any traffic rule. Prices will be between 50-250 INR (~ 1-4 USD) within city limits. Some parts have to be explored only on foot.

If you are on a shoestring budget, you can opt for a shared tempo. Shared tempos run in different routes. Ask any local for the route to your destination. Like we took a shared tempo from Bansmandi Chauraha (which was 250 meters from our hotel) to Kaiserbagh Chauraha for 15 rupees per person. Then took another shared auto for 10 rupees per person to Charak Chauraha for Chowk. These shared autos are the most reliable in terms of frequency and cost-effectiveness. But board them only if you are comfortable traveling with 6 other people crammed in a small vehicle.

Things to see in Lucknow

Lucknow is full of historical monuments, religious places, and parks. Below are the few notable ones which you must visit while in Lucknow.

The best place to start your sightseeing is ‘Rumi Darwaza’ as anything in the old town is either within walking distance or a short autorickshaw ride away. It was built in the 18th century to mark the start of then Lucknow. As time passed and the city grew bigger, it lost the status of the city entrance. It was made into an entryway of the Nawab’s palace. The palace does not exist anymore. It was destroyed by the British when the Nawab refused to surrender. But many monuments inside the palace still survived. So does the Rumi Darwaza. Named after the famous Persian poet Rumi, Rumi Darwaza also stands the test of time like Rumi and his poems. Now, it has become the symbol of Lucknow.

Location: here Opening Hours: 24 hours Admission: Free The minimum time required to visit: 15-30 minutes

Bada Imambara Complex

After crossing the Rumi Darwaza, a huge entrance leading to the Bada Imambara complex will be on your right. A large flower garden and a few shops selling local souvenirs will welcome you once you enter. Entry to the garden is free of cost. Cameras and tripods are not allowed. A cloakroom is available at the entrance. The second entrance after the garden is where you need to buy tickets for the rest of the complex. Besides the Imambara, it houses Asifi mosque, a labyrinth – the Bhool Bhulaiya, and a step well – Shahi Baoli.

When Lucknow was hit with famine, its Nawab Asif-Ud-Daula commissioned the famous architecture Kifayat-Ullah to build these monuments to create employment for locals. To reduce cost no metals were used. Even though cheaper materials were used, these are considered architectural marvels for their strength and stability even today.

After entering through the 2nd gate, you will see a magnificent mosque on your right. The legend goes British wanted to weaken its foundation by sipping water through its walls. But they could not succeed. It is a functioning mosque so only Islam practitioners are allowed inside. But you can enjoy its architectural brilliance from the outside.

The largest building inside the complex is the Imambara. It has three large halls. The central hall which is said to be the largest in the world has no pillars. The mint-colored hall was built in Persian style. The other two halls that were built in Indian and Chinese style are equally impressive.

The multi-storeyed labyrinth was built to strengthen its defense mechanism. It has a network of more than 1000 passages and identical doors with only one door leading to the exit. Every turn has 4 doors, only one leading towards the exit. Passages were built in such a way that they create an illusion of climbing down when you are actually climbing up.

A seven-storeyed stepwell was built to create a water source for the palace. The architecture is similar to the labyrinth and gives an illusion of climbing down while climbing up. There are certain windows from where the reflection of the entry door can be seen in the water but not the other way around. It was made for the royal guard to keep an eye on all the visitors so that they can prepare for any unwanted visitor.

Location: here Opening Hours: 6 am – 5 pm Admission: The combined ticket that also includes Chhota Imambara, Picture Gallery, Shahi Hamam costs 50 INR for Indians, 500 INR (~ 7 USD) for Foreigners The minimum time required to visit: 2-3 hours Guide: Standard rates which are regulated by the Govt will be on display at the ticket counter. The guide took 150 INR (~ 2 USD) for two of us for all three monuments except the mosque.

Located near Bada Imambara, it houses the Chhota Imambara, a royal bath, and a princess’s tomb. The white outer wall of imambara has intricate work in blue. Inside, it is decorated with expensive lamps and chandeliers imported from different parts of the world. For its decoration, it is also called the palace of lights.

The Shahi Hamam or royal bath looks like a simplified version of Turkish Baths. The courtyard is decorated with lots of flower plants, fountains, and a pastel pink gateway.

We were stopped at the gate to be informed that a guide is mandatory to enter. Unlike Bada Imambara, I did not see any display at the site or on the tourism board’s website. He explained histories about the places and helped us to click a few couple pictures. It was not a bad deal for 100 INR (< 2 USD) for 2 persons. He did not accompany us inside the main Imambada building. Another man offered to show us around inside the building in exchange for a small tip of 50 INR (< 1 USD). It was worth paying the amount.

Location: here Opening Hours: 6 am – 5 pm Admission: The combined ticket that also includes Bada Imambara, Picture Gallery, Shahi Hamam costs 50 INR for Indians, 500 INR (~ 7 USD) for Foreigners The minimum time required to visit: 1 hour Guide: 150 INR including tips for 2 people

While going to Chhota Imambara from Rumi Darwaza, you will see a huge clock tower which has been a symbol of Lucknow for many years. Climbing is not allowed.

Location: here Opening Hours: 24 hours Admission: Free The minimum time required to visit: 10-15 minutes

It has nothing special. In fact, we accidentally discovered it on our way to Bada Imambara. Even the ticket seller was surprised. We were exhausted after walking for long hours. We sat for some time and watched squirrels playing around. Also, you will get an amazing view of the Aasifi mosque from here.

Location: here Opening Hours: 8 am – 8 pm Admission: 10 INR The minimum time required to visit: 10-15 minutes

The 18th-century bungalow is mostly in ruins. It is located quite far from the old city. There were no other tourists, only a handful of locals enjoying a family picnic. You can enjoy some time away from the overbearing crowd of Lucknow.

Location: here Opening Hours: 8 am – 7 pm Admission: Free The minimum time required to visit: 30 minutes

Ambedkar Park is located on the opposite side of the Gomti River. This part of the city is developed much later with planned roads, clean footpaths, and several statues. It is a large park decorated with several statues of elephants, horses, and fountains in marble. It houses an open-air auditorium too.

Cameras and tripods are not allowed inside the park.

Location: here Opening Hours: 11 am – 9 pm Admission: 15 INR The minimum time required to visit: 1-2 hours

Lucknow is food heaven. Awadhi Nawabs were known for their knack for food. Awadhi cuisine which originated in Lucknow has a very distinctive taste and flavors than Mughal or any existing Indian cuisines. The two dishes that are synonymous with Lucknow are Biriyani and Galauti Kabab . All foods in Lucknow are flavourful but not heavy on the stomach at the same time. Don’t forget to try out its famous foods like Kulcha Nihari, and different types of Kababs. The best places to try them are Idrees , Tunday Kababi , and Dashtarkhan among others. For vegetarians, it offers a variety of chaats, kulfi, and sweets.

I will be sharing a detailed food guide for Lucknow soon.

Lucknow is divided into two parts by the Gomti River. The old city, railway stations, the airport, and bus terminals are on the western side. Most areas here are congested and have no proper planning. There are no good places to stay in the city center. However, there are a few economic options in the Hussainganj area. Expect to pay around 1500-2000 INR (14-28 USD) for almost negligible amenities. But all major attractions will be closer to the stay. If you have the budget, you can opt for Lebua or La Place Sarovar Portico .

The eastern side is developed in the last few decades into a commercial and business hub. You will find ample stay options at a reasonable rate in the Gomti Nagar area. The only con is the distance from the major attractions. But the area is well connected by the metro. Cabs are easily available. Some quality options will be Vivanta by Taj , Novotel , Fairfield by Marriott , Hyatt Regency , Hilton Garden Inn , etc.

The optimal option considering cost, amenities, and access to public transport is to stay in Gomti Nagar near any metro station. For more budget options check booking dot com . Airbnb will not a good option for Lucknow.

The one thing that you should not miss buying in Lucknow is Chikankari products. Chikankari is a specific type of embroidery art that originated in Lucknow. You will find dresses and all kinds of Indian wear like Sarees and kurtis with Chikankari motifs for both men and women.

Don’t fall for tourist traps. Guides, autorickshaw drivers, hotel owners usually offer to take tourists to the best place for shopping. But they will actually take you to shops that are notorious for overcharging tourists in exchange for commissions they get from the shop.

Shop from local markets in Chowk or Aminabad area. Don’t forget to bargain. You can also buy spices that are used in Lucknowi cuisine.

Lucknow gets very hot during the summer months. The best time to visit Lucknow is October – March. Try to avoid any Islamic festivals as major attractions will be closed for religious activities.

I stayed in Lucknow for 2 days, boarded all sorts of public transports including a shared tempo, ate at local shops, and wandered through the tiny, congested lanes of the old city. Not even for once, I felt uncomfortable. People have been very helpful and friendly.

Uttar Pradesh has been on top of the chart for higher crime rates for many decades irrespective of its political situation. So, both women and men should keep safety at the highest priority while in Lucknow. Many shops sell guns openly in some areas with questionable permits. Avoid going to such areas. Do not venture outside the touristy area late at night. Respect the religious or cultural sentiments of locals.

Lucknow is safe for women and solo travelers.

Lucknow is a conservative city. Major attractions in Lucknow hold religious importance. Indian attire is not mandatory. You can wear Western clothes like jeans, long skirts, and maxi dresses. Keep a scarf handy in your day bag. Some religious places might require you to cover your head.

Lucknow Itinerary

Now let’s address the most important question. How many days do you need to visit Lucknow? Lucknow is a huge city with a lot of things to see and eat. You will need at least 2 full days to explore all that Lucknow has to offer.

If you have 48 hours in Lucknow, you can follow the below itinerary. It is assumed you will be reaching Lucknow and complete the check-in formalities in your hotel the previous night or early on day 1.

Start your day with a traditional Lucknowi breakfast at Sharma Ji ki Tea Stall. Enjoy your tea with Gol Samosa and Bun Makkhan.

Then take an autorickshaw to Rumi Darwaza. Visit the Bada Imambada Complex next to it.

It’s time for lunch. Try the famous Lucknow biriyani at Idrees, the best Biriyani shop in Lucknow. Pack your food and enjoy a picnic lunch at Nibu Park. Do not forget to clean the place before you leave.

Visit Chhota Imambara next.

Then take a cab to the other side of the city and enjoy the sunset at the Ambedkar Memorial Park.

Have your dinner at Tunday Kababi to try out the famous Galauti Kabab, a specialty of Lucknow. Have an extravagant meal with different kababs and korma.

Finish your day with a kulfi from Prakash Kulfi Shop.

Click here for the route map of your Day 1 in Lucknow.

Start your day 2 with another traditional Lucknow breakfast which is Kulcha Nihari at Rahim’s.

It’s time for some shopping and some more food tasting. The Chowk area will be full of local shops for Chikankari clothes, and spices. Try Makkhan Malai (a traditional sweet made of milk cream available only during winter), Malai Pan in the old city.

Have your lunch at Open Air Restaurant. It is an old shop that specializes in Chicken dishes.

Then spend some leisure time at Dilkusha Kothi.

Head for the airport/railway stations/ bus terminal to embark on your next destination.

Click here for the route map of your Day 2 in Lucknow.

If you have only a day in Lucknow, follow the day 1 itinerary. It covers all important aspects of Lucknow.

The budget of a trip depends on personal preference and affordability. You can travel dirt cheap by hitchhiking, or couchsurfing. You can travel as luxurious as staying in a royal palace. The cost of traveling mentioned below is to give you a rough estimation of the minimum amount one requires for a 2 day Lucknow trip.

I assume you will stay in a budget hotel, eat out in moderate restaurants, and use public transport. Also, all costs are mentioned for 2 persons on a sharing basis. Expenses like accommodation, and cabs will be shared between them.

It will be around 7000 – 8500 INR / 103 – 124 USD for a 2-day trip for two on a sharing basis.

Now, you are all set for the city of Nawabs. If you have any other doubts, ask me in the comment section.

Lovely post Ankita! I love seeing your photos of the various parks and beautiful buildings…and oh my goodness the food sounds incredible!

I am always a bit sad to learn about places that the UK messed up with our hideous colonial past. It’s a huge shame that British Children don’t get to learn about this side of the “great” british empire. Still it is great to see that Lucknow is now doing so well. 🙂

If you’re looking for the perfect 2 days in Lucknow Itinerary then keep reading. Before I came to India, I had never heard of Lucknow.

But, as I’ve been in India for quite a few months now, I tend to play flight roulette on Skyscanner to find cheap places to escape Delhi for the weekend.

Luckily for me Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, popped up!

Okay, so I don’t just click buy without checking the place out first. I looked on Pinterest for some inspiration and my jaw dropped at the amazing architecture there. I had to check this place out!

So, I booked my ticket and flew into Lucknow for the weekend. I had 48 hours to explore everything the city had offered to me.

Here is my ultimate 2 days in Lucknow itinerary or how to spend 48 hours in Lucknow!

2 DAYS IN LUCKNOW | Things to do in Lucknow

Why visit Lucknow?

I will admit, there isn’t a massive amount of things to do in Lucknow but they do say it’s quality over quantity.

If you’re a history lover, like me, this city is the perfect getaway in India. It boasts a monument or heritage site on every corner!

Plus, it’s not as touristy as Rajasthan, Varanasi, or Agra so there’s a bonus. I was seriously impressed with this city I had never heard of.

The buildings were so colourful, intricate, and inspiring. There are parks, the Gomti River and the many ancient markets to explore as well.

How to reach Lucknow in India?

As Lucknow is in Uttar Pradesh, it’s pretty easy to get to via plane from Delhi airport.

There are numerous flights a day and they’re cheap to boot. Most major airports in the country run daily flights to Lucknow.

From Delhi, Lucknow is around a 12-hour train journey. If you opt to take an overnight train, it can save some time.

The Indian state of Uttar Pradesh boasts some great tourist spots such as Varanasi and the famous Taj Mahal so you’ll easily be able to find a train heading to the capital of UP.

Tip: if you do arrive in Lucknow by train, make sure you turn around when you get outside the station. The building itself is incredible and worth a visit alone!

The best place to stay in Lucknow

There is no place better than the Vivanta by Taj in Gomti Nagar.

It is a little bit on the pricey side but it is a five-star hotel with the best service on offer, so you’ll definitely get your value for money.

The hotel has made a great effort to reflect the cities heritage and culture in its stunning decor.

Even if you don’t check in here, be sure to give the hotel a visit for afternoon tea or dinner in their Latitude restaurant.

Things to do in Lucknow with 48 hours

Here are the top places to visit in Lucknow, make sure you add these to your itinerary while you’re here.

Bara Imambara

First up on the itinerary is Lucknow’s jewel in the crown, the famous Bara Imambara.

You’ll probably hear or read the term ‘Nawab’ a lot while you’re here and that’s because these guys left these amazing heritage buildings behind from the peak of the Awadh era.

If you haven’t got a clue what I’m talking about that’s fine; i’ll explain. If you were a Nawab of Awadh, you were a pretty important guy. Almost like a king.

You were the ruler of the kingdom of Awadh and Lucknow was part of this kingdom in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Bara Imambara was built by the fourth Nawab of Awadh, Asaf-ud-Daula (try to pronounce that!) in 1784.

It was built as a relief project for a famine that struck the city around this time. It’s also a place of worship for Muslims and is still active today.

Nowadays, it’s a stunning complex to visit. The inside of the building has some of the finest Mughal architecture of the city and the colours are stunning.

I saw some guides providing tours but these were mostly in Hindi. I decided to explore on my own and I had just as much fun.

Tip: Be sure to pick up a ‘foreigner’ combined attractions ticket. This will get you access to most of the major tourist sites.

BARA IMAMBARA LUCKNOW | LUCKNOW ITINERARY

After you’ve explored the bottom be sure to walk up to the famous Labyrinth at the top!

This will be included in your combo ticket. You have to walk around with no shoes on so be careful of your feet!

I was walking around in the heat of summer and there were no mats or carpet to be seen. That equalled very hot and unhappy feet. But, it was worth it to see the views of the mosque from here.

LABYRINTH LUCKNOW

Chota Imambara

The next Imambara to add to the heritage list is Chota. It was built as a place of worship in 1839 and is a tomb to the Nawab who built it, Mohammed Ali Shah.

From the outside, it’s an attractive building which, again, has some amazing architecture and the gardens surrounding it are also worth a look.

On the inside, it is a wonder!

There is just so much going on, I didn’t know where to look. It’s nice and vibrant and some of the chandeliers and mirrors looked ancient.

This will be included in your combined ticket. You will need to cover your head, even on the grounds as it’s a holy site.

If you don’t have a head covering the security will provide you with one. You need to pay the shoe guy 2 rupees to look after them while you explore around.

CHOTA IMAMBARA LUCKNOW ITINERARY

British Residency

The British residency has an important part to play in India’s colonial past. It was one of the sites that acted as a refuge for over 3000 British citizens during the uprising in 1857.

It also has a gravesite of over 2000 British soldiers who died during the revolt.

Today, a lot of the red brick buildings are in ruins, but you can wander around the gardens which are peaceful.

You can still see the cannonballs which have been left on the walls! If you head up to the top of the park, you can find out more about their quaint museum.

It will show you the history of the city and they will play a little DVD which tells you more about it.

Luckily for me, it was in English so I could understand.

To enter the museum, you need to leave your bags in the little locker hut outside.

Cameras are prohibited but mobile phones aren’t (I’ve never understood this as iPhones are pretty much as good as digital cameras nowadays but hey ho).

It’s free of charge and the guy will give you a lock and key. Unfortunately, it’s not included in the combined ticket and the park will cost you 200 rupees as a foreigner.

BRITISH RESIDENCY LUCKNOW ITINERARY

La Martiniere College

College campus and popular Bollywood filming location, La Martiniere was founded in 1845.

The main building of the college is under reconstruction to bring it back to its original roots and it’s a stunning piece of work.

You don’t need to pay or be a student to visit, just simply approach the security and ask to look around.

When I reached the main annex, there was building work going on but the guys didn’t seem to mind me poking my nose around. I was in love with every room.

Just see for yourself;

LA MARTINIERE LUCKNOW ITINERARY

And there was more!

I’m not sure when the reconstruction will be finished but it looked like the whole building is set to be incredible.

I’ll have to return when it’s completed. After you’ve looked inside the main building have a wander around the campus.

LA MARTINIERE LUCKNOW

Where to go in Lucknow at night

As a solo female traveller, I always have a bit of a dilemma about where to spend an evening in India.

I want to explore places but I have to consider my safety as well. The summer heat is unbearable during the day at times and I like to make the most of the outdoors during the cooler hours.

Luckily, Lucknow had some great parks to explore after sunset.

As these have mostly families visiting and are quite busy, I didn’t once feel unsafe. and so would recommend these to visit.

Dr. Ambedkar park situated in Gomti

It will cost you 10 rupees to enter.

They say it’s a park but there’s not much nature here, it’s actually more of an open space.

It is a bit of a strange one and reminded me of some sort of post-apocalyptic Indian time warp into the future.

But, I loved the rows and rows of elephants!

DR AMBEDKAR PARK LUCKNOW ITINERARY

Riverside in Gomti

This attraction is so new there isn’t even a google pin for it yet!

There’s a musical fountain which plays in the evening and it’s packed.

It has a really nice atmosphere to it. Mainly the locals are taking selfies but it’s just nice to walk around.

You can also buy a ticket for a round trip to the Gomti river by boat for 100 rupees if you fancied it.

RIVERSIDE GOMTI LUCKNOW

Shopping in Lucknow

If you did fancy delving into some shopping while in Lucknow, there are plenty of markets to choose from.

I went to Aminabad market which is around 2km from the train station.

It’s the oldest and largest market in Lucknow and has been here since the Nawab era. You’ll find everything from ‘Chikan’ work (not chicken which I thought people were saying lol), dresses, food, shoes, baskets – anything!

Make sure you get a rickshaw around to stop you from buckling in the heat. I paid 20 rupees for a ride.

AMINABAD MARKET SHOPPING IN LUCKNOW

So that’s your 2 days in Lucknow itinerary

There are also other monuments to explore such as the Clock Tower, the planetarium, and the picture gallery.

As I said, there is a historical monument on every corner!

I was amazed at how much I enjoyed my visit to Lucknow and it goes to show that a flight roulette can provide an unlikely weekend adventure.

How To Spend 24 Hours In Lucknow – A Travel Itinerary

Okay, before I continue with my 24 hours in Lucknow itinerary, I would like to admit that there isn’t much to travel in Lucknow. But if you believe in the saying that quality over quantity matters, Lucknow may just be a place you don’t want to miss.

If you’re a history lover, you are going to love Lucknow. If you’re a food lover, you are going to love Lucknow even more. The city boasts a monument and a mouth-drooling eatery on every corner. Plus, it’s not as touristy as Rajasthan or Varanasi or Agra so there’s a bonus.

The buildings were so colourful, intricate, and inspiring. There are parks, the Gomti River and the many ancient markets to explore as well.

But as I said above, Lucknow doesn’t have too many tourist highlights, and for most Indians – who always have a limited time in hand – spending only 24 hours in Lucknow makes perfect sense. So here we go…

24 hours in Lucknow itinerary

Start your day with a quick tour at Husainabad Trust Road.

The nearly 1 km stretch of Husainabad trust road is where you will find all Navabi monuments — from Bada Imambara to Clock Tower to the Picture Gallary in Lucknow.

Start your tour at the Husainabad Trust Road early in the morning, 7ish types, and you should be able to cover most of the highlights before lunch.

It also makes sense to start early as soft morning light will get you better pictures.

Here are a few of the must-visits of the Husainabad Trust Road…

Bada Imambara

bada imambara

The architectural and structural design of Bara Imambara is one of its kind and given it’s one of the prominent mosques in India, it does make sense to begin your day by visiting the Bada Imambara.

The entire complex consists of the Imambara, mosque, and the Bhul Bhulaiya, perhaps the most interesting of all.

If covered thoroughly, it may take about 3 hours to cover all nooks and corners of Bada Imambara. For those looking for a 24 hours Lucknow itinerary because they have limited time in hand, a one hour tour of the Bada Imambara is what I personally recommend.

Chota Imambara

chota imambara

Built by the third Nawab of Lucknow –  Nawab Muhammad Ali Shah in 1838, Chota Imambara was meant to be a religious monument for the Shia Muslims.

Besides being the place of the congregation during Muharram, it also houses the Tazia — the graves of their religious leader and is carried in the Muharram procession after an elaborate decoration.

It is quite an experience walking and exploring the premise of Chota Imambara. Think of it as a small scale copy of the Taj Mahal. One can find souvenirs from over 30 countries across the world placed in the inner sanctum of Chota Imambara.

Clock Tower

clock tower

Also known as the Ghanta Ghar, Husainabad Clock Tower is a 67 m tall structure constructed by Nawab Nasir-ud-din Haider in the year 1881. Displaying the finest works of art, the tower was built to commemorate the arrival of Sir George Couper, the first Lieutenant-Governor of the United Province of Avadh.

tunday kababi

Head To Tunday Kababi For Lunch

Once you have covered prominently highlights of the Husainabad Road, head towards Old Nazirabad, Khyaliganj, for some mouth drooling food. Popular across India, Tunday Kababi is a legacy food.

I suggest you try Mutton Galawati Kabab, Mutton Korma and Mughlai Paratha.

There are a few Tunday Kababi in Lucknow. The one at Old Nazirabad serves the best food.

After Lunch… Visit British Residency

The Residency Lucknow is best described as the living quarters of the British General – a representative of the British East India Company in the courts of the Nawabs.

british residency

Where the heritage sites like the Chota and Bada Imambara leave the tourists awestruck, a trip to The Residency Lucknow leaves people with mixed emotions. While on one hand, visitors get an idea of the grand life that the British led, on the other, it also develops a vague idea of the freedom struggle and the siege that this place has witnessed.

There is no denying that The Residency Lucknow is an integral part of the city and a definite must-visit when here.

residency museum

It takes about 3 hours to complete the tour of the Residency. Make sure you enter the residency latest by 3 pm because the most interesting part of the Residency, the museum, closes at 5 pm. I missed visiting the museum because I got late. Make sure you don’t.

5 Days In Lucknow – A Perfect Itinerary

lucknow tour blog

In early 2018, I tried Awadhi cuisine for the first time, and it was love at first bite. My friends had ordered kebabs from a restaurant named Tunday Kebabi. I tried their famous Tunday and Galouti kebabs which instantly melted in my mouth. Its divine taste ignited a fire within me, and I decided to visit the city of its origin, Lucknow.

In December 2018, I finally planned a trip to Lucknow with my family. Lucknow is a city full of culture, literature, architecture and history. However, it was the food that attracted me the most. Here’s a complete itinerary of my trip where I unleashed my gastronome side and satisfied the history buff in me.

Table of Contents

How to get to Lucknow

It is easy to reach Lucknow if you are staying in Delhi, Haryana or Uttar Pradesh as there are a plethora of train and bus options, many of which are budget-friendly. For people travelling from other parts of India, you can take a direct flight or train to reach the city.

Tip: If you are on a weekend trip, try reaching a night before or early morning to make the most of your time.

Where to stay in Lucknow?

I did not find many budget hotels in Lucknow. Either they were too expensive or at a vague location. Therefore, I would recommend pre-booking your hotels and doing a location check before booking them. I stayed at a hostel in Gomti Nagar, which was better than any other hotel nearby. You can read the complete review here .

If you have got a slightly higher budget, here are a few more options:

  • Hilton Garden Inn , Vibhuti Khand, Gomti Nagar
  • Hotel Novotel Lucknow , Gomti Nagar
  • Hotel La Place Sarovar Portico , Hazratganj

Day 1: Riverfront and Awadhi dinner

marine-drive-lucknow

We kept our itinerary light for the first day. We went on an evening stroll at the Riverfront Park that was merely a few kilometres away from Gomti Nagar followed by a delectable dinner at Falak Numa restaurant.

  • Riverfront Park – is a 2km long, lush garden next to the Gomti River. A beautiful place to take your evening stroll. The ambience is tranquil, and the lighting will leave you spellbound. You also get an astonishing view of the Ambedkar Memorial Park from here.
  • Falak Numa Restaurant – at Hotel Clarks in Hazratganj is an atmospheric restaurant & bar serving Awadhi delicacies with a splendid view of the city’s skyline.

Day 2: Hussainabad

bada-imambara-lucknow

On our second we headed to one of the most popular and oldest areas in the city Hussainabad. It is home to many famous monuments including the Imambaras. Hussainabad can be easily explored on foot in a day. However, you can also book a Tuk-Tuk and hop on and off at your convenience. Here’s what all we did at Hussainabad:

  • Rumi Darwaza – also known as the Turkish Gate, is located next to Bada Imambara.
  • Hussainabad clock tower – it is the tallest clock tower in India. The clock tower is built in Victorian-Gothic style architecture and sits beside a tiny pond.
  • Bada Imambara – is a stunning complex comprising a mosque, labyrinth and a stepwell. It is also the most visited monument in the city. Hence, it was very crowded. Tip: If you are low on time, then opt for a guided tour to get a quick and better understanding of this place.
  • Chota Imambara – is an imposing monument, serving as a congregation hall for Shia Muslims.
  • Satkhanda – is a four-storeyed observation tower that draws its inspiration from the tower of Babylon.
  • Picture Gallery – showcases stunning artwork. We ended our day with a mesmerising sunset from the balcony of the Picture Gallery.

Day 3: Residency and Ambedkar Memorial Park

residency-lucknow

Residency is an old residential complex located in the heart of the city that is quite popular among tourists. It was constructed during the rule of Nawab Saadat Ali Khan II and served as the residence for the British Resident General. During the First War of Independence, the freedom fighters demolished this place with cannons and bullets. What you see now are the remains of the buildings. We spent almost half a day here exploring the ruins. The Residency Museum was small but had a lot of interesting facts to share. All in all, we had a pretty fantastic time here.

ambedkar-memorial-park-lucknow

We then headed to the Ambedkar Memorial Park , one of the newly added attractions in the city. It is known for its grandeur. The park is spread across 107 acres of land and constructed in the memory of several social reformers like Bhimrao Ambedkar, Kanshi Ram and many others. We were awestruck by the beauty and craftsmanship of this place, each element made with so much love and perfection. Here’s what all we explored:

  • Pratibimb Sthal – this is the main entrance of the Stupa and is guarded by 62 stone elephants on each side.
  • Ambedkar Stupa – is a memorial dedicated to Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, a famous Indian politician and social reformer. The Stupa consists of giant bronze statues depicting the life of Dr B.R Ambedkar. The interiors were mesmerising and reminded us of Venetian architecture.
  • Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Samajik Parivartan Sangrahalay – is a museum that showcases a brief history of all the social reformers of India.

There were many other attractions within the complex, including a Pyramid. We spent approximately 4 hours gawking at the beauty of this place. No doubt it is one of the most popular attractions in Lucknow.

Day 4: Planetarium, Kaiserbagh and Aminabad

kaiserbagh-lucknow

By our fourth day, we covered almost all the touristy spots in Lucknow. Therefore, we decided to take the road less travelled. We explored the lesser-known but one of the oldest complexes in Lucknow Kaiserbagh or Qaiserbagh that was built by the last Nawab of Awadh.

It was a big complex that took us more than half a day to cover. We managed to do a DIY walking tour following the trails provided by the tourism website. Here’s a list of things that we did:

  • Indira Gandhi Planetarium – We struck our nerdy chods at the Planetarium. I had a keen interest in astronomy and loved visiting Planetariums as a kid. Therefore, it was fun to revisit the memory lane. The Planetarium had a museum and a theatre. The show happens throughout the day, and you can check the timings here.
  • Suraj Kund Park – which resides next to the Planetarium, is a tiny park complex comprising a pond and surrounded by a garden. We didn’t find much history about this place. However, on speaking with a few locals, we discovered this place to be sacred.
  • Shaheed Samarak Park – is built in memory of India’s Freedom Movement martyrs. The inner park comprises a marble memorial that can be seen from a distance. The outer park displays statues of the martyrs.
  • General Wali Kothi – is an old villa resting on the right bank of the Gomti River. Most parts of this building are limited to tourists. However, the ground floor is open and also has a mini theatre that plays videos (on request) of India’s Freedom Movement.
  • Chhattar Manzil – also known as the jewel of Lucknow is a gated enclosure consisting of a cluster of old residential buildings dating back to 1857. These buildings are known for their unique architecture, especially the umbrella-shaped dome which they call Chattar Manzil the Umbrella Palace.
  • Begum Hazrat Mahal Park – is one of the oldest parks in Lucknow, built in the memory of the Queen of Awadh, Begum Hazrat Mahal. The park comprises a beautiful memorial made of white marble and two mausoleums that displays the beauty of Awadhi architecture.

chikan-embroidry

Lucknow is famous for Chikan embroidery and leather goods. Therefore, it was hard to give shopping a miss. We headed to the oldest market in the city, the Aminabad market that sells the best Chikankari suits and sarees in town. It was a wholesale market. Therefore, the price was low, and we had a fun time bargaining with the shopkeeper.

Day 5: Kukrail Reserve Forest and Zoo

kurail-forest-reserve-lucknow

On our last and final day, we headed to the Kukrail Reserve Forest , located 9 km away from the city centre. The reserve conserves endangered crocodile species like Gharial, Alligators amongst many others. It is a great place to see these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.

Tip: The reserve is in a remote area with limited connectivity. Therefore, I recommend pre-booking your car to save time and hassle. Also, book your ride for 3 hours at max as the reserve is not too big.

lucknow-zoo

Next, we headed to the Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Prani Udyan, also known as the Lucknow Zoo . It holds more than 200 species of animals and birds in open habitats.

After the Zoo, we headed to Charbagh railway station to catch our train back to Delhi. If you follow this Lucknow itinerary, I promise you will have the best five days in Lucknow. Moreover, If you’re looking for food recommendations, here’s a complete food guide to Lucknow’s culinary delights .

1. Bara Imambara

Don’t miss the chance to explore the Asafi Imambara and its stunning architecture on our One Day Lucknow Sightseeing Tour. Asafi Imambara, built in 1784, also known as Bara Imambara, is one of Lucknow’s most important historical sites. The complex was constructed by Asaf-ud-Daula, one of the illustrious Nawabs of Awadh, and includes the Asfi Mosque, a sizable mosque, the Bhul Bhulaiya, and a stepwell with flowing water (Shahi Baoli).

One of the rare structures in Lucknow with no trace of European design in this one, the building has two impressive entrances that will take you to the center hall, which is reputed to be the largest arched hall in the entire globe. If you make it to the top, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of the city.

  • Must See / Things to Do: Witness the splendid architecture and undulating views of the city.

2. Chhota Imambara

Located next to the Bada Imambara, Chhota Imambara is also known as the Imambara of Hussainabad. This is another example of the magnificent artistry that Muhammad Ali Shah displayed when he built it in the 19th century. Its grandiosity is personified by its enormous dome, soaring minarets, and extensive lawns. Arabic writings were found on the walls.

Due to the extensive use of glass, ornate chandeliers, and incandescent interiors that are decorated with Arabic writings, it is also known as the palace of light. The monument also includes two replicas of the Taj Mahal in Agra.

Witness the magnificence of Chhota Imambara and its enchanting glasswork on our one day sightseeing tour – book your unforgettable experience today!

  • Must See / Things to Do: Marvel at the architectural grandeur of the monument.

3. Rumi Darwaza

The beautiful gateway, which stands sixty feet tall and is situated between the Chota Imambara and the Bara Imambara, once served as the entry to Old Lucknow City. It is also referred to as the Turkish gate and is strikingly similar to the Turkish gateway Bab-i-Humayun.

It is composed of limestone-coated brick and rises to a striking height of 60 feet. It continues to be elaborate with lovely carvings and patterns. The monument’s umbrella-shaped construction, according to legend, once housed a lantern that was lit at night by the water jets coming from its arch. Lucknow has made Rumi Darwaza its emblem, and its magnificence is sure to fascinate everyone.

  • Must See / Things to Do: Capture images of the landmark monument.

4. Shahi Bauli

Next on our sightseeing tour is a hidden gem, Shahi Bauli. It showcases architectural brilliance and historical significance. The ancient water reservoir was built and used during the Mughal times. It was constructed adjacent to Bada Imambara to provide water and food to the common people of Awadh during the severe famine.

During the British Era, it was used as a royal guest house. The 5-storey structure showcases Indo-Islamic designs. The ornate stepwell houses brilliant archways and exquisitely carved doorways. Its descending levels and symmetric arches create a mesmerizing visual effect.

Must See / Things to Do: Admire the unique design and architecture of the stepwell.

5. Clock Tower

Near Rumi Darwaza, Husainabad Clock Tower is an architectural marvel. It was constructed to welcome the 1st Lt. Gov of the United Province of Awadh, Sir George Couper. Since 1881, it has been the tallest clock tower in India. The 67-m-high and 4-faced structure displays Victorian-Gothic brilliance, with a 14-ft-long pendulum and a dial shaped like a 12-petaled flower.

It was inspired by the famous clock tower in England, Big Ben. Its inside is made of gunmetal. The Mughal influences allow it to mix well with the surrounding Mughal-Era buildings. In 2010, the manually operated clock was upgraded to an electric clock.

Must See / Things to Do: Visit during the evening to see the clock tower light up with dazzling colors.

6. British Residency

The British Residency was the headquarters of the East India Company but became a British refugee camp during the 1857 uprising. The complex is a group of buildings in one enclosure. It housed quarters, stables, armory, worship places, residential quarters, and dispensaries.

The once imposing 3-story main building hosted a library, games rooms, and offices. There was a beautiful fountain in the center of the entrance. The banquet hall has intricate carvings on the tall arches, high ceilings, and large hallways. Overlooking the Gomti River, it is now in complete ruins and is now protected by the Archeological Survey of India.

Must See / Things to Do: Explore the ruins and imagine how the complex might have looked during its glory days.

7. Picture Gallery

Picture Gallery is one of the oldest picture galleries in Lucknow. The quaint art museum exhibits an extraordinary assortment of paintings, artifacts, portraits of Oudh’s Nawabs, and photographs. Most of the intricate paintings are evidence of the optical illusion. On your Lucknow city tour, marvel at the life-sized portraits of the historic regional rulers in traditional dresses.

The run-down red brick pavilion was once the royal summer place. It was built in the Barderie style. There are 12 gateways, a mosque, and plenty of greenery. It overlooks a large artificial water tank. The incorporation of iron pillars in its upper-story pavilion deviates its construction from the traditional Nawabi architecture.

Must See / Things to Do: Take a guided tour to explore the history and significance of each painting and artifact.

8. Lucknow Zoo

The Nawab Wahid Ali Shah Zoological Garden, often known as the Lucknow Zoo, is regarded as one of the top tourist destinations in Lucknow for nature enthusiasts and families.

Established in 1921 on 71 acres of land, the area is now home to numerous wildlife wonders, including over 440 species of mammals, 340 species of birds, and several kinds of reptiles.

In addition to the vintage train from the British era on exhibit in the zoo and the toy train rides and paddle boating, you can also check out the butterfly park and nature interpretation center while you are here.

  • Must See / Things to Do: Enjoy spotting rare animals in a verdant setting.

9. Ambedkar Memorial Park

A significant landmark of modern Lucknow is the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Public Park, which is situated on Vipul Khand in Gomti Nagar. The park, which spans a sizable area, is home to numerous impressive structures. The entrance is guarded by the 62 elephant statues of the Pratibimb Sthal. There are several statues of Ambedkar that depict his life in the Ambedkar Stupa, which is in the center of the city.

Social reformers like Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Jyotiba Phule, Sree Narayana Guru, Shahuji Maharaj, and Kanshiram have statues inside the two-domed Parivartan Sangrahalay building. Gautam Buddha, Birsa Munda, Sant Ravidas, Guru Ghasidas, and Kabir Das marble statues are housed in different buildings. In addition, there is a gallery with bronze murals.

Immerse yourself in the inspiring history of social reformers at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Public Park on this Lucknow sightseeing tour by private car – schedule your visit now!

  • Must See / Things to Do: Spend an evening relaxing with your loved ones.

10. Dilkusha Kothi

You can only witness the building’s ruins from the 18th century, but Dilkusha Kothi also holds significant historical and cultural value. Even though it was seriously damaged, the Baroque-style building on the Gomti River was able to survive the first struggle for Indian independence in 1857.

The structure was initially constructed to serve as the Nawabs’ hunting lodge. The original three-story structure had a basement and was quite similar to Seaton Delaval Hall in England. The four elaborate octagonal towers were reached by a grand flight of stairs. Even now, the walls, towers, and a well-kept garden still serve as reminders of the city’s illustrious past.

  • Must See / Things to Do: Walk through the bygone era to discover the history of these ruins.

Discover the Wildlife Wonders in Pilibhit Tiger Reserve Safari

The incredible opportunity to go on a safari at the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve and I must say, it was an experience of a lifetime. Located in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India, Pilibhit Tiger Reserve is one of the best places to witness the magnificent wildlife of India. The safari started early in the morning and our guide briefed us about the reserve and the safety precautions we needed to take. As we entered the reserve, we were greeted by the beautiful sight of lush green forests and the chirping of birds. The safari was conducted in an open jeep which allowed us to have a clear and unobstructed view of the surroundings. As we drove deeper into the reserve, we were lucky enough to spot various animals such as deer, monkeys, and different species of birds. The highlight of the safari was, of course, the majestic tigers. We were fortunate to spot a few tigers lounging in the shade and it was truly a sight to behold. Our guide informed us that Pilibhit Tiger Reserve is home to over 50 tigers and we were lucky enough to witness a few of them. Apart from tigers, we also saw other big cats like leopards and wild dogs. The reserve is also home to a variety of other animals like sloth bears, elephants, and wild boars. The landscape is breathtaking and it was a surreal experience to see these animals in their natural habitat. One of the most unique experiences of the safari was the visit to the watchtower. We climbed up the tower and had a bird's-eye view of the entire reserve. From there, we could see herds of deer and other animals grazing peacefully. It was a calming and serene experience. The safari also gave us the opportunity to learn about the conservation efforts taking place in the reserve. Our guide informed us about the various initiatives being taken to protect the endangered species and their habitats. It was heartening to see the efforts being made to preserve the rich biodiversity of the reserve. Overall, the experience at Pilibhit Tiger Reserve was unforgettable. The safari was well-organized and our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the reserve and its wildlife. It was a great learning experience and I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to discover the wonders of Indian wildlife. It is a must-visit for all nature and animal lovers. I cannot wait to go back and explore more of this beautiful reserve.

Buddhist Tour 7 Days

This Buddha pilgrimage took me to all the sites I wanted to visit. From Lumbini, Nepal (birthplace), through India ... Kapilavastu (childhood home), Bodhgaya (where enlightened), Rajgir, Sravasti, and Vaishali (lectured/taught), and Kushinagar (place of death). Also enjoyed seeing Hindu ceremonies along the River Ganga. Biggest advantage of this tour is driving in a smaller vehicle with a small group, as opposed to a large bus with larger tour group (slower pace).

I was the only person on this tour and got the same dedicated treatment as if there were a whole group. I was picked up at each stop, and given a guide and driver, then delivered to the next stop. The only hitch was a missed train because I wasn't given the correct time by either the voucher or the driver. But no problem in the end, as I was driven to the next stop instead. All the cities were very interesting and great photo ops, especially Varanasi. The cooking lesson in Jaipur, given by my guide's wife at their apartment, was especially memorable.

Think of an Indian city where emphasis is put on etiquette, nawabi (read regal) ways, a multicultural lifestyle imbued with hospitality, and melt in your mouth kebabs, and you’ve found yourself in Lucknow, spread out majestically on the banks of the Gomti river. With a historical significance dating back to the mythical days of Ram’s reign, this city derived its distinct cultural and physical identity under the Mughal patronage and was even courted by the British after the famous Siege of Lucknow in 1857. The labyrinth at the huge and impressive Bara Imambara , the Chattar Manzil, Rumi Darwaza,  Chota Imambara and the Clock Tower are significant examples of Indo Islamic architecture as well its experiments with the European  style to fuse together a completely new architectural style unique to this city. The capital of Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state of India has seen malls sporting brands mushrooming all over the city. For the authentic flavour go local; your Lucknow tour guide will help you pick out a piece of chikan apparel, select your favourite ittar (perfume), tuck into tunde ke kebabs followed by a handful of rewari in the local market places of Aminabad, Hazratganj, Janpath or Chowk.

Rajasthan Royals

Over the last four days, the IPL has seen 262 being hunted down with ridiculous ease, and 211 chased down rather comfortably. Additionally, totals of 257 and 225 have almost proved to be short. So Rajasthan Royals being set 197 by Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Stadium hardly seemed challenging at the halfway stage.
But even so, RR were 78 for 3 after 8.4 overs of the chase after being 60 without loss towards the end of the powerplay. Ten overs into the chase, with RR requiring another 116, ESPNcricinfo’s forecaster gave LSG an 87.76% chance of winning. The momentum had all but tilted LSG’s way before Sanju Samson and an out-of-form Dhruv Jurel came to RR’s rescue. Both posted half-centuries and added an unbroken 121 in riposte to KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda’s own fifties and a 115-run stand for LSG, and took RR home with an over to spare.
As a result, RR bagged two more points to consolidate their position at the top of the points table, and have one foot into the playoffs with as many as five games remaining.

Automatic Refunds and No More Hidden Fees: D.O.T. Sets New Rules for Airlines

The Transportation Department issued new requirements on refunds when flights are canceled or delayed and on revealing “junk” fees before booking. Here’s what passengers can expect.

A blue airport screen showing extensive cancellations and delays is shown in close up with a man standing in front of it.

By Christine Chung

The Transportation Department on Wednesday announced new rules taking aim at two of the most difficult and annoying issues in air travel: obtaining refunds and encountering surprise fees late in the booking process.

“Passengers deserve to know upfront what costs they are facing and should get their money back when an airline owes them — without having to ask,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a statement, adding that the changes would not only save passengers “time and money,” but also prevent headaches.

The department’s new rules, Mr. Buttigieg said, will hold airlines to clear and consistent standards when they cancel, delay or substantially change flights, and require automatic refunds to be issued within weeks. They will also require them to reveal all fees before a ticket is purchased.

Airlines for America , a trade group representing the country’s largest air carriers, said in a statement that its airlines “abide by and frequently exceed” D.O.T. consumer protection regulations.

Passenger advocates welcomed the new steps.

Tomasz Pawliszyn, the chief executive of AirHelp, a Berlin-based company that assists passengers with airline claims, called it a “massive step forward and huge improvement in consumer rights and protection” that brings the United States closer to global standards in passenger rights.

Here’s what we know about the D.O.T.’s new rules, which will begin to go into effect in October.

There’s now one definition for a “significant” delay.

Until now, airlines have been allowed to set their own definition for a “significant” delay and compensation has varied by carrier . Now, according to the D.O.T., there will be one standard: when departure or arrival is delayed by three hours for domestic flights and six hours for international flights.

Passengers will get prompt refunds for cancellations or significant changes for flights and delayed bags, for any reason.

When things go wrong, getting compensation from an airline has often required establishing a cumbersome paper trail or spending untold hours on the phone. Under the new rules, refunds will be automatic, without passengers having to request them. Refunds will be made in full, excepting the value of any transportation already used. Airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds in the original form of payment, whether by cash, credit card or airline miles. Refunds are due within seven days for credit card purchases and within 20 days for other payments.

Passengers with other flight disruptions, such as being downgraded to a lower service class, are also entitled to refunds.

The list of significant changes for which passengers can get their money back also includes: departure or arrival from an airport different from the one booked; connections at different airports or flights on planes that are less accessible to a person with a disability; an increase in the number of scheduled connections. Also, passengers who pay for services like Wi-Fi or seat selection that are then unavailable will be refunded any fees.

Airlines must give travel vouchers or credits to ticketed passengers unable to fly because of government restrictions or a doctor’s orders.

The vouchers or credits will be transferable and can be used for at least five years after the date they were issued.

Fees for checked baggage and modifying a reservation must be disclosed upfront.

Airlines and ticket agents are now required to display any extra fees for things like checking bags or seat selection clearly and individually before a ticket purchase. They will also need to outline the airline’s policies on baggage, cancellations and changing flights before a customer purchases a ticket.

The rules, which apply to all flights on domestic airlines and flights to and from the United States operated by foreign airlines, have varying start dates.

For example, automatic refunds must be instituted by the airlines within six months. But carriers have a year before they’re required to issue travel vouchers and credits for passengers advised by a medical professional not to fly.
