Interview: Kipleigh Brown On Voicing Star Trek Online And Writing For Star Trek Continues

Actress Kipleigh Brown has been very busy in the Star Trek franchise, starting out in an episode of Enterprise , then playing Lt. Barbara Smith on the fan series Star Trek Continues , and she currently voices Captain Kuumaarke in the MMORPG Star Trek Online . Players first meet Kuumaarke of the Lukari in Season 11 (“New Dawn”) and can follow her story through to Season 13 “Escalation” which is available on PC and was just launched on Xbox One and PS4.

Kipleigh Brown and her character Captain Kuumaarke from Star Trek Online

Let’s talk about Captain Kuumaarke and the Lukari in Star Trek Online. She’s been all over the game now, on the Defiant as well as helming her own ship. What is it like being in the Star Trek world virtually and how do you approach imbuing her with attitude and spirit?

First of all, what I love about her is that the Lukari are new to space exploration. They are warp-capable but they are just homebodies, they’ve stayed on their world and they’ve never felt the need to branch out and explore the galaxy until they needed to get help because their sun was threatening to go supernova. They reached out to the Federation and so everything since that moment has been a first for the Lukari race, to venture into space. Administrator Kuumaarke, which was her original title before she became captain, is the pioneer of her species. She’s the first captain, she’s at the forefront of their exploration and she’s kind of leading her people into this new universe.

I know you’re really into science. Did you bring some of that curiosity to her as well?

Oh yes. My sisters make fun of me because I nerd out. I’ll start talking about microtubules and quantum mechanics, and I start pushing up invisible glasses on my nose that I don’t actually wear and think about mind-bending, alternate reality, crazy science stuff. Then I take that and I translate it into how it might be similar for her to go to space and see giant jellyfish and the equivalent of space whales, and all these amazing scientific discoveries.

What is interesting about the Lukari is that, even though they haven’t ventured into space, they are scientifically advanced. The TOS cast can understand the science, but to them, proto-matter is still unknown, whereas the Kuumaarke have mastered this technology. When Captain Kuumaarke starts to find these traces of bombs that were used using proto-matter and see that this technology is being used for destruction and war, at first she can’t comprehend it. Who would do that? It would never have occurred to a Lukari to have used it in that way.

And then of course there’s my ship, Kuumaarke’s ship, the Lukari ship. There was a poll, three ships were designed and the fans chose the winner. It is this amazing triangular ship. They call it the flying Dorito! Some fans call it that.

lukari star trek

The Lukari split from their mother species, the Kentari, because they didn’t want to be power-driven and consumer-driven, yes?

Yes, and that’s the other thing she discovers, because she isn’t quite certain if the Kentari still exist. The Lukari aren’t sure what happened to them, and it looks like they may have blown themselves up. There is this idea of a crossroads for a species and one took the peaceful route and the other one took the one we all know so well, since it has happened on Earth, unfortunately.

I’m with the Lukari! Can I leave with them?

I know, right? And even though Kuumaarke finds purity in the idea of science and its uses, she also finds that science, discovery and exploration aren’t as clean cut as one would hope. She sees that people have used these scientific things to annihilate other species, and she loses some naivete about the world. And it’s not it’s not ignorance, it’s just a newness. She’s incredibly intelligent, but she doesn’t become cynical or bitter, and that’s what I really like.

You give her a little accent, I like that.

That’s a funny story, actually, about her accent. The folks at Cryptic said that because it’s a new race being introduced into the world of Star Trek, they wanted to give them an exotic accent, something that gives them a different sound. They wrote out phonetically an idea for an accent for me and I was going over it and going over it and it was a lot of elongated vowel sounds and rolling R’s. Try as I might, the way it came out of me, it sounded like I was Dracula. During the recording session at Cryptic, I’m like “guys, I’m gonna give it a try, but I don’t think this is what you were looking for.” They were very gracious but said yeah, there’s a little bit of vampire going on there. Do you have anything else? Since my mom is English, I went with the British accent. It is not necessarily exotic but it at least not the standard Midwestern American accent which is what I have normally.

Speaking of design, what do you like about Kuumaarke’s look?

She’s not a Lara Croft type, with a big chest and a teeny tiny waist. She’s an athletic woman, and she makes bald look good for ladies the way that Patrick Stewart did for the gentlemen. He made bald sexy.

I really like her purple eyes! They are unique.

Yes, and they have lightning on the clothing. Her outfit – I want one! The electric clothing has evolved over the seasons but it’s really cool. I really am going to impress upon the awesome folks at Cryptic to actually create it in real life to buy and wear and never take off.

Writing for Star Trek Continues

What did you think of the Star Trek: Discovery trailer and the women we saw?

Well, Rekha Sharma was our latest guest star on Star Trek Continues , so I just worked with her, and it was amazing to hear that she was cast. She got the call for an audition while on set with us, and she couldn’t say what it was. But I was with her when she got the call and she was sort of glowing and I was all “What is it?” since I know they were auditioning Discovery , and she said she couldn’t tell me. And then she got the part! I am rooting for it. I want it to be good. I know there were some problems getting off the ground, but I hope that they keep in step with the original character of Star Trek.

Speaking of which – what’s new with Star Trek Continues ?

This is a brand new announcement, I was only just given permission to talk about it! Star Trek Continues , Episode 9, which will be the next one released, is called “What Ships Are For” and it was written by me.

It is so wonderful to have a lady writing Trek! Yay!

I wrote the teleplay and the story. The teleplay was also by Vic Mignogna and James Kerwin, but I wrote the actual script. That was something that I really wanted to do and, without giving any plot spoilers away, I wanted to see a little bit more of Spock and Bones and their kind of begrudging, grumpy friendship.

lukari star trek

Kipleigh Brown as x on Star Trek: Continues

I am so excited! I’m really glad to hear that you are having some input behind the scenes because we so need that in science fiction.

Yes. Also, it was a challenge in TOS for me, because what we see now that may be sexist wasn’t necessarily sexist back in the day. One thing I remember thinking is, why did they have to put these professional women in these micro miniskirts? And I found out that originally, the female characters were in pantsuits but to ladies at that time, the miniskirt was a sign of female empowerment. This idea of “we can wear what we want and we don’t have to cover ourselves because you can’t handle the appearance of a female knee” sort of attitude. Nichelle Nichols lobbied for the fashion of the day, which was a micromini! So that changed my opinion of the skirts. I’m like okay, that was a lady power thing! Cool!

STC also has an episode discussing why there aren’t female captains.

Yes, and I thought it was handled really well. I know a lot of people were like “oh, it’s a Hillary Clinton analogy!” and while it happened at the same time, not everything has to be tied to politics. It is a very interesting question that many people have raised over the years.

Yes, I always wondered why they didn’t have women captains because there are female crew members on the ship and it’s not like they’re not allowed in Starfleet.

Plus there were some really powerful, cool women, like the Romulan captain and a bunch of other guest stars that were great, and of course you always had a love interest. There might be a hint of a love interest in my script. I’m not saying there is, but there is a really awesome guest star.

What are you all going to do with all the great sets from STC when it finishes filming?

That’s the next question! It’s like walking onto the Enterprise. It’s this unified set that you can take a whole walk through, it’s not all parsed out in different pieces, except for Engineering. You can walk down the corridor into the bridge, into Kirk’s quarters into auxiliary control into the transporter room and it’s just great. Vic Mignogna is such a stickler that he made sure that the set was an exact replica of the one from Desilu Studios, in every proportion down to the millimeter and the layout. It was how it actually looked back then, and even the buttons that I use, because I’m the helmsmen/navigator, and even the gumdrop buttons were poured into the exact same mold they used for The Original Series . They are too beautiful to take apart. Our executive board is in the process of trying to figure out what to do with them and keep them intact and maybe share them with the public in not-for-profit fashion.

Fantastic. Big fan of Ms. Brown’s work on “Star Trek Continues”, and can’t wait to see her episode next month.

I am *really* going to be bummed to see “Continues”. What a terrific series.

Derp… this site needs an edit button on the comments section :p

I am really going to be bummed to see “Continues” *come to an end*.

Agreed. In truth I’ve only really liked about half of the episodes (and didn’t much care for the last one at all), but there are good moments in the worst of them, and several really “feel” like they could have been produced by Roddenberry, Fontana, Justman et al in 1970, while still retaining some modern appeal. That’s actually quite an accomplishment.

Announcing the Dranuur Colony Fleet Holding

lukari star trek

Following the events of “Mirrors and Smoke,” the Lukari and Kentari began efforts to work together. The culmination of this effort is the Dranuur Colony in the Alpha Quadrant. Both races will try and see if they can coexist peacefully, or if it is all but a pipe dream. With any luck, the two races will learn a thing or two about the other and how they can better their own lives.

With Season 14: Emergence , Dranuur Colony will become available as a new joint Lukari-Kentari-themed Fleet Holding, available to all Fleets in Star Trek Online . Your Fleet will assist the two races as they establish and develop an island on the newly-terraformed world.

For the first time since the introduction of the Fleet Starbase, player fleets will be presented with a full-sized Holding, comprised of a primary track and three subtracks, each with five tiers of progression. Each tier and subtrack will offer fleets new improvements to their Colony World holding, as well as access to new equipment and new gameplay options.

In addition to earning resources by participating in activities around the colony, your fleet will be able to enact training simulations for potential invasions – the Kentari haven’t survived this long without a healthy helping of paranoia, after all. Simulation Provisions (used to start the invasion simulation) will can be earned by completing fleet projects and can be used by your fleet leadership to trigger these map-wide invasion events. As your fleet advances, new simulation options will become available, allowing you some customization of the training simulation experience. Additionally, it will become easier to earn a stockpile of Simulation Provisions as you progress in the main track.

The invasion simulation is a multi-location wave defense event, which allows up to 20 fleet members to participate without needing to queue – simply travel to the Dranuur Colony, and start the event. After every five invasion waves, participants will be given a vote to stop and claim the rewards earned so far, or continue on to more difficult waves, risking their earned rewards in the process. Victory in this simulation rewards players with resources and Fleet Marks used to progress the Colony holding.

Best of luck, Captains. The future of the Lukari-Kentari Joint Initiative is in your hands.

Beginning with the next Holodeck patch, fleets that progress their Dranuur Colony Main Track to Tier 5 (or are already there) will unlock the ability to purchase the Lukari Dranuur Scout Ship [T6]. This release marks the first time that a full Tier-6 starship, complete with Console and Starship Trait, has been made available through the advancement of a colony holding!

Once unlocked, this ship may be obtained from any Ship Vendor for the following price:

  • 20,000 Fleet Credits
  • 5x Fleet Ship Modules
  • 1x Starbase Military Fleet Ship Provisioning

** This unlock also requires your fleet to have completed the Tier 1 Fleet Shipyard at your Starbase.

Lukari Dranuur Scout Ship [T6]

In the process of making the more state-of-the-art Ho'kuun vessel, the Lukari also experimented with smaller, lighter spacecraft. The Dranuur is a modernized update to those earlier designs, enhanced by Kentari scientists working at the joint colony on Dranuur. Thanks to these updates, it is fully functional and ready for scientific exploration of the dangerous frontiers of known space.

Scout Ships are a unique combination of Science Vessel capabilities, in a much smaller, faster and more fragile package. They come with built-in Sensor Analysis and Subsystem Targeting, as well as a Secondary Deflector slot, and are able to benefit from Raider Flanking bonuses as well. These nimble vessels are also similar to a Raider in that they boast an abundance of universal bridge officer seats, can load dual cannons, and have similar weapon slot configurations.

This starship features a Lieutenant Command Universal/Temporal Operative Specialist Bridge Officer seat.

This protomatter-based technology was originally developed by the Lukari for medical purposes, but turned to military applications by ingenious Kentari scientists. It is capable of manipulating the quantum states of matter, locking them into sequence with others. This short-lived quantum lock allows manipulation of distant matter by applying energies to the linked matter which is kept on-board the source ship. Volatile in nature, this technology has a limited lifespan under which the effects can be maintained. While in effect, the linked foe will be continuously drawn toward the source, and any damage dealt to the linked starship will repair the source starship, while any hull restoration applied to the source starship is instantly transmitted to the targeted foe as radiation damage.

  • Neither of these triggered effects can trigger the other
  • There is trigger limit of 10x per sec
  • There is a minimum effect magnitude of 500 per trigger

This console also provides a passive boost to Hull Capacity and Power Transfer Rate.

This console may be equipped in any console slot, on any starship. You may only have one of these consoles equipped at a time.

After achieving level 5 in your Lukari Dranuur Scout Ship [T6], you will unlock the Proto Spill Starship Trait. While slotted, activating any Hull Healing or Shield Healing Bridge Officer Ability will cause a Radiation AOE, centered on the healed ally (or self).

  • Radiation Damage to up to 5 nearest foes within 3km of Healed Target (or Self)
  • Max once every 6 sec

Customization

Once purchased, this ship’s visuals may be used by both the Hokuun Science Vessel and the N’Kaam Scout Ship. This ship may also use the visuals from either of those vessels if they are already owned.

** NOTE: The above stats are subject to change and tuning.

Screen Rant

Star trek writers break down that massive 'vulcan god' twist, new section 31 secrets, and more.

Writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing discuss the massive lore reveals in Star Trek #19 from IDW Publishing and what fans can expect next.

  • Revealing T'Lir as an Organian adds depth to the godly theme in IDW's Star Trek series, enhancing the character's identity and Trek lore.
  • Exploring advanced beings' interaction with humanity is core to Star Trek, setting up a grand, unified, and catastrophic story.
  • Section 31's mysterious involvement and upcoming revelations promise an incredible and interwoven tale in the Star Trek universe.

The Star Trek universe is adding new characters and resurrecting old ones in its quest to deliver "the best Star Trek story ever told," and with its newest headline-making chapter, the IDW comic series is pulling no punches to achieve that goal.

With the latest issue of the series dropping more than one lore-changing bombshell in the true, 'divine' nature of Sisko's Vulcan crew member T'Lir, a new twist in the shadowy operations of Section 31, and Captain Benjamin Sisko's own mission from the Prophets, fans are reeling. So Screen Rant asked the writers themselves, Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, to break down the newest reveals.

Needless to say, there will be SPOILERS for Star Trek #19 ahead!

SR: One of the new series' biggest mysteries has finally been solved: the true identity (and nature) of the Vulcan T'Lir. When did you decide to bring the Organians back into this story? What was it about their previous appearances in Tre k?

Jackson Lanzing: Finally, it can be told! T’Lir has secretly been an Organian from the very first outline - if we were going to make this a story about “gods,” it was extremely important for there to be a character on the ship who represented what that word actually meant. Incarnating them in a Vulcan body was also extremely important to us, as Star Trek always feels more like Star Trek with a Vulcan in the room, but it also gave us a great stereotype to begin breaking down - either as T’Lir cries when they see the crystalline entities for the first time, or when they keep repeating their mantra to stay grounded and corporeal. The audience could slowly be let into the secret… so that by the time we got to this reveal, it felt like it didn’t invalidate the character you knew, but rather enhanced them.
Collin Kelly: That question of whether T’Lir is the person the audience has grown to care about - and how much their Organian identity means to them - is right at the center of what makes this story tick. They didn’t just *become* a fully adult Vulcan - they were born, they were raised, they’ve lived a full life, all with the memory of another life - another person - under their skin. To help clue the audience in, every issue of this arc will feature a page from T’Lir’s personal journal, one they were keeping when they were still one of the Organians that were actually on the planet to meet Kirk and Spock during that species’ first appearance in “Errand of Mercy.” In those, readers will find a full story for T’Lir… one that will have huge consequences as we get to the end of this arc.

SR: So with one gigantic twist comes another: a journey to the Pleroma, why Sisko is forbidden from attending, and even a search for Wesley Crusher... what made these strands of god-level Trek lore stand out for you to dig into, and find spaces within the existing timeline to further flesh out?

Jackson Lanzing: That interaction between advanced beings and evolved humanity is at the very core of what makes Star Trek, well, Star Trek. It’s been there since the first two episodes - “The Cage” tells us all about how technology might be used to dominate us and change our very reality, while “Where No Man Has Gone Before” asks us what it means for a human to achieve that kind of reality-warping power. We knew from the start that this would be the center of our run.
Collin Kelly: Exactly. These were plot lines that we have wanted to dive into since the very first outline - in fact, of all the stories we planned to tell, “Pleroma” is the tale most crucial to paying off the first arc and establishing momentum for what comes next. As for Wesley, we owe that entirely to PICARD - while we always knew that Wesley became a Traveler, the world only recently learned that the Travelers are ALSO part of the Supervisors, which we established in Star Trek: Year Five as the leadership of the time-and-space caretakers known as Aegis. Now, Aegis was our villain in Year Five - which folks can read in the extraordinary hardcovers IDW has begun releasing - but their context has changed after that story. Are they friend, foe, or something in between? With Beverly on our crew, and the blessing of Paramount, the opportunity to reunite mother and (first born) child was too good to pass up. Jackson Lanzing: As for why Sisko *very specifically* isn’t invited to this gathering of Gods… read on.

Bringing in a new plot involving Section 31 is a bombshell on its own, but to name that character "Sloan," and recruiting one of Sisko's crew?! For the fans who already know the group's deal, what about this new wrinkle do you want fans to be asking, speculating, or worrying about until the next issue?

Jackson Lanzing: As with everything Section 31, that is extremely classified. What I’ll note is the character’s not named Sloan - they just use Sloan’s authorization. Maybe he’s gained a certain notoriety among the Section 31 agent community? Maybe there are those who wish he’d been able to go further? Collin Kelly: As for what’s going on with Section 31, fans might actually find more of a hint in the distant past than in their recent actions in the Dominion War…

SR: Your editor Heather Antos has teased that the next chapter of your Star Trek opus will go "beyond the human mind's wildest imagination." That's a grand scope, so any further details or teases you can offer about where these next chapters fit into the larger Trek tapestry?

Collin Kelly: First you ask about Section 31, then you ask about secrets? Is this a set up!? What we can say is that this arc is the start of something incredible - not just for our book, but for the casts of Star Trek: Defiant and Sons of Star Trek as well. This line is truly telling an interwoven story - and the time is drawing near to reveal the secret shape of what’s to come. Jackson Lanzing: You don’t tell a story about the fragile nature of spacetime without breaking a few realities. Strap in - there’s never been a Star Trek story as grand, as unified, or as catastrophic as the one we’re building to. You thought Day of Blood was a big event? You ain’t seen nothing yet.

Star Trek #19 is available now from IDW Publishing.

Star Trek is one of pop culture's biggest multimedia franchises, spanning multiple movies, TV shows, books, comics, video games, and various other media. The franchise was created by Gene Roddenberry and started with the 1960s TV series starring William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. Over the decades, several equally popular series have come out since as Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Discovery.
