The Private Suite is now PS.

  • October 1, 2020

The Private Suite is now PS.

PS reimagines the airport experience for the seasoned and discerning traveler.

Located in a private terminal far away from the traffic and bustle of the public terminal, PS offers a back door to your aircraft, along with seamless security and Customs clearance, as well as luxury amenities before and after your flight.

PS is a private terminal designed for first and business class travelers (and celebrities) seeking the highest convenience, privacy and luxury at LAX.

It allows travelers to go through private TSA screening and Customs processing, private suites for awaiting boarding and direct to aircraft transportation across the airfield – all while interacting with no more than five employees from start to finish.

The exclusive terminal serves as the safest way to travel with all commercial airlines, transforming Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) into one of the world’s most convenient airports for people traveling in premium class.

PS at LAX is the first-of-its-kind in the U.S., modeled after VIP services that have proven successful at many major overseas airports including London’s Heathrow Airport, and airports in Munich, Frankfurt, and Dubai, among others.

PS Travel Lounge LAX

Since its launch in 2017, PS has helped well-heeled travelers, including Gabrielle Union , Jessica Alba , Paul Wesley and Max Greenfield, luxuriously avoid the crowds and lines at LAX . Instead of checking in at terminals, guests arrive at PS’ location just outside the airport on Imperial Highway, where they receive their own private suite, bites from The h.wood Group restaurants and, after being screened through an on-site TSA checkpoint, a ride along the tarmac to their flight in a BMW sedan. For international travel, the property also includes its own customs and immigration processing station. Now, PS is expanding.

The luxury travel service has opened The Salon, which allows guests to forgo a private suite to mingle with others in a lounge designed by celebrity fave designer Cliff Fong and features rotating art curated by Creative Art Partners. Salon prices start at $695 for PS members and nonmembers, whereas use of a private suite costs members $3,250 and nonmembers $4,350. Annual membership is $4,500. In a definite sign of the times, on-site COVID testing is available upon request.

The Salon also includes an outdoor garden. For families with young children or pets, keep in mind that The Salon is reserved for those 21 and over. Pets are not allowed.

Popular on Variety

“Our members and guests expressed a desire for more social options at PS,” company co-CEO Joshua Gausman tells Variety . “The Salon fills that gap without sacrificing the special TSA, customs and airfield driving features we’re known for. The Salon’s format and price point speak to the shift in the world of luxury hospitality, and we’re confident it will exceed every expectation.”

There’s a Way Better Alternative to Waiting at the Airport Terminal. But It’ll Cost You

Ramona Saviss

The business of privacy as a luxury is booming, especially when social distancing during travel.

When I pulled up to the nondescript warehouse-like building marked by high-flying white PS (formerly known as The Private Suite) flags, I couldn’t tell what kind of experience I was about to encounter. I rolled down my window and a man in a fitted navy suit, earpiece, sunglasses, and, of course, a protective mask stood as the guard and checked my name against a list. For a second it felt like a bouncer was determining whether I was being allowed into an exclusive nightclub despite it being only 10:30 a.m. on a Friday. As the double gates opened, I was directed by another man in the same slim-fitting suit uniform—also wearing a mask, sunglasses, and an earpiece—to park in front of a white Bentley SUV. The small lot had about 20 cars parked out front, mainly all on the higher end of the luxury vehicle spectrum—Tesla, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Range Rover, and Porsche took up most of the spots.

As I was greeted, helped out of my car, and escorted directly to my suite, I noticed the row of plants and greenery along the pathway to the private suites. The building itself is very industrial from the outside—think: an airport—but being that you are nowhere close to the actual never-ending circle of doom inching toward your terminal at LAX , the planters lining the walkway signaled that this breezy airport experience was going to be different.

PS is a private and separate airport terminal, located adjacent to LAX, at 6875 W Imperial Highway. Meaning you do not drive to LAX (like I mistakenly did) and you also don’t have to park at a remote lot and then have to take a jam-packed shuttle to the frenzied public terminal. PS has taken the stress that comes with traveling, especially during a pandemic when social distancing is key, and brings a private airport experience to commercial fliers. Think of it as taking a private jet  (which I have yet to do), minus the actual jet.

The Setting

Upon entering my suite, I couldn’t take my eyes off of the airport runway views from the big window across the doorway that gave the room an inside-outside feel. Beneath the window was a comfortable day bed that had a yoga mat and oversized tablet with pre-loaded workouts from PS’ wellness partner Alo Yoga. The terminal’s 12 suites are in the midst of being renovated and glammed up by interior designer Cliff Fong, who brought in residential elements to make the rooms feel warm and luxurious. The suite that I was in even had an outdoor patio that, while it had barbed wire fencing across the top, made it seem like I was sitting at a fancy Restoration Hardware store with minimalist-chic patio furniture. I took the Alo Yoga mat and did some stretches outside, which felt great given my usual airport experience has no breath of fresh air.

shgphoto-26

The ensuite bathroom had everything you may possibly need when it comes to pre-flight personal care, such as a Tide stain remover, mini Schmidt’s natural deodorant, a bamboo toothbrush, Tom’s natural toothpaste, a comb, and plenty of pocket-sized, over-the-counter medicine (Dayquil, Nyquil, Benadryl, Advil, Tylenol, and more). The room itself looked like a fancy condo, with wanderlust Assouline books and modern art curated by Creative Art Partners (CAP) lining the walls. The art collection at PS, programmed for the entire private terminal by CAP, is a six-figure assortment of works by more than 25 contemporary artists that are also for sale.

shgphoto-34

I was surprised to see the sheer quantity of freebies in every corner of the suite. The alcohol was top-shelf—the wine on display included Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars’ Artemis–and I was told that PS has its own cellar on-property should I want something additional. The mini-fridge was stocked and the food and drink nook featured healthy and high-quality snacks such as Bob’s Red Mill oatmeal, Justin’s organic peanut butter cups, Smart Sweets treats, and more. There was also a tray with complimentary tech travel items—chargers, headphones, travel adapters—that you may need for your flight. Plus, the TV had all the DirectTV channels you would need.

All food and drink (including alcohol) is unlimited and included in the visit as long as it’s provided by PS and not from an outside vendor. Their food menu was California cuisine-focused, but soon PS is launching a partnership with hospitality company The h.wood Group. The h.wood Group will revamp the breakfast, lunch, and dinner offerings, adding in more bowls, salads, sandwiches, and kids options as well as desserts, such as fresh-baked cookies. However, for visitors craving something specific from anywhere else in L.A., such as sushi from Nobu or burgers from In-N-Out (their most requested item), the Member Services team arranges whatever you’re craving to be ready for you in-suite upon arrival.

It felt like they thought of everything. PS even provides a branded blue paper lunch box to be filled with more snacks for your flight. Growing up, I was the kid who loved gift bags at birthday parties, so, naturally, I was thrilled to fill my to-go snack box.

When booking travel through PS, the simple process can be done online or over the phone and you just need to book 24 hours in advance of your flight. The Member Services team works like a personal travel concierge—checking flight delays, weather, and rebooking canceled flights. I arrived about two hours before my flight, however, if you give PS the heads up you could check in up to three hours before.

shgphoto-22

Now that I’ve visited PS I know to leave plenty of time for the spa services also offered in the private suite (and included with membership). Book in-suite services such as a massage or manicure at the time of booking. PS even offers car detailing (complimentary for members) as well as free overnight parking for the duration of the stay.

In terms of safety and cleanliness, PS offers on-site testing for COVID-19 to ensure the safety of their guests. The suite was spotless, as were other areas of the terminal. The biggest draw of the entire experience was the built-in social distancing and privacy—not running into another party even in a security line. And while it was under construction during my visit, there is an outdoor play area for kids as well as a place for pets to roam free before a flight.

Once I was sufficiently indulged in my suite, a PS agent knocked on the door and escorted me directly to their private TSA area. Three agents waited for me at the PS TSA security checkpoint. I was stunned. Until that point, I had only seen three other people, all of which were PS employees. I realized why PS is seeing an uptick in business as more people get comfortable with the idea of flying again during a pandemic. After my bags were checked, I was escorted to a PS-branded white BMW sedan, part of their fleet, and driven directly to the plane.

While I only visited PS for a departure flight, the private terminal is usually used for roundtrip flights, both domestic and international, as they even have a private area with customs and immigration officers. And if you’re arriving at LAX, there is a shower suite with plush robes and a hairdryer to freshen up after you land.

shgphoto-19

For arrivals, PS launched PS Direct, which gives members an even more private domestic travel experience (if that’s even possible). Upon arrival to LAX, PS Direct will pick you up in one of their BMWs at the plane, take your checked luggage off the plane, place it in the trunk, and drive you directly home or to your hotel, bypassing the airport and PS terminal entirely.

The annual membership fee for PS members is $4,500, with an additional cost of $3,250 for one-way travel with up to four guests; additional guests can be added for $500 per person. For nonmembers, each way costs $4,350 for up to four guests; each additional guest is $800 per person.

The Verdict

If you’re not jetting off in your own plane but want to feel like you are, if you travel often or live bicoastally, if you have a special trip planned (such as an anniversary, birthday, honeymoon), if you’re avoiding paparazzi at LAX, if you’re COVID-conscious and want to avoid the crowds at LAX, or you are just looking to splurge because you haven’t traveled for a year…while it is expensive, PS can be worth it.

With all the perks–food and drink, spa services, car detailing, luxury suite–and the peace of mind it lends, this is the most socially-distanced way to travel during a pandemic. The luxury of privacy shines through at PS, which is worlds away from even the best airport lounge across the tarmac at LAX.

PS , the private luxury terminal for commercial flights, will officially open its doors at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on September 6, 2023 , the company — formerly known as Private Suite — announced in a press release this week. It will be the second location for PS joining an outpost in LAX.

Sign up now to get our Daily Breaking News Alerts

“A staple for affluent travelers flying through LAX since 2017, PS reimagines the pre- and post-flight experience by allowing its members to fly commercial without setting foot in the airport,” according to the release.

Accepting reservations now for September 6 and beyond , the private PS ATL terminal offers on-site TSA screening, followed by time in the terminal in either The Salon lounge or Private Suite, both equipped with all of the complimentary often-forgotten amenities you can think of (but didn’t). At boarding time, Members and guests will then be driven to their commercial flights at any of ATL’s gates to board the plane directly from the tarmac. For those arriving to ATL, the full experience is reversed, from tarmac pick-up through airport departure, as well as private customs clearance on international arrivals.

“Opening our second PS location in America’s busiest airport will bring the countless travelers that fly to and through Atlanta the convenience and luxury that has become synonymous with the PS brand,” Amina Porter , CEO of PS, said. “The Atlanta Department of Aviation played a pivotal role in bringing this vision to life and we hope other airports will follow suit.”

PS ATL will pair “global sophistication with local culture,” showcasing a range of regional amenities and partners that shine a light on some of Atlanta’s most notable and noteworthy brands and artisans. The space features an extensive collection of artworks by black artists, and antique and vintage furniture pieces sourced from local collectors.

The Private Suites provide travelers with complete privacy in their own accommodation, while The Salon offers a lounge area perfect for solo travelers or small groups. Beyond the respite spaces, guests can enjoy an extensive menu of cocktails and chef-prepared meals, as well as spa and beauty offerings such as massages, manicure and barber services.

According to the company’s website, non-members can pay $1,095 per person to use The Salon and $4,085 for up to four people to use a Private Suite. Membership, which costs $4,850 per year, reduces use of The Salon to $750 per person and a Private Suite to $3,550 for up to four people.

PS ATL’s official opening marks the brand’s latest milestones following a year of significant growth. PS recently announced locations coming to Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), set to open in spring 2024, and Miami International Airport (MIA), scheduled for a 2025 opening. PS’s accelerated momentum comes as the brand’s proven experience providing a private, premium, and seamless airport offering meets the industry’s growing demand.

Everything you need to know about LAX’s secret VIP terminal PS

Benji Stawski

One of my all-time favorite travel experiences had to be flying through The Private Suite at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) shortly after it opened. It's a truly unique experience, allowing anyone — who can pony up the high price tag — to bypass the passenger terminal and wait for their flight with amenities not offered by any other lounge at the airport.

Since my first visit , a lot has changed, including a rebrand to PS and a complete makeover of its suites. On July 30, PS will even open a communal lounge called The Salon.

While the facilities never closed, co-CEO Amina Belouizdad explained that PS used the downtime from the pandemic to build on and perfect the one-of-a-kind experience it's offered since day one. And it seems to be paying off as PS sees an uptick in new memberships as more people return to the skies.

Photography is usually forbidden inside PS' heavily fortified walls. However, I was recently invited back to get a taste of the updated experience and give our readers a glimpse of the renovated facilities. Here's how it went.

You don't need to be a celebrity to get the A-list treatment at PS. Anyone can book a visit to PS for $4,350 one-way. This includes up to four travelers, while each additional traveler is $800. You can book the service regardless of the airline or class of service you're flying.

Frequent travelers can unlock lower rates with an annual membership. Individual memberships cost $4,500 each year and drop the per-use rate to $3,250 — again for up to four travelers. That said, you may be able to get a free membership if you have the Amex Centurion (black) card or a Wheels Up private jet membership . Other perks of annual membership include complimentary valet, car detailing, manicures and in-suite massages.

There's also a new members-only service called PS Direct. For $3,450 for up to four travelers, members can be driven to their final destination directly from their arriving aircraft, bypassing the suite altogether. If you don't need a private suite, starting July 30, you can book a communal lounge, The Salon, for $695 per person.

PS is a private facility located across the airfield from LAX's main terminal area. Specifically, it's about two miles from the usual madness of the airport, so you'll be far away from any traffic and won't need to deal with the 'LAX-it' taxi and ride-hailing lot .

luxury travel company ps

It features 12 individual suites, each of which is staffed by a dedicated team of no fewer than eight people. The suites are landside, so you're allowed to bring non-traveling guests in with you, though this does also mean you'll need to reclear security if you're using PS for a layover.

luxury travel company ps

I was assigned suite #13 (they're not numbered sequentially), perhaps the most desirable one as it offered a private outdoor patio.

luxury travel company ps

The suite looked nothing like the one I stayed in during my last visit. It was recently gut-renovated and the interior, by designer-to-the-stars Cliff Fong, was fabulous.

luxury travel company ps

The new design had a warmer, more residential feel to it. Between the shapes, colors and materials, everything about it felt luxe. With a collection of Assouline books and art curated by Creative Art Partners lining the walls, it was a lot more like a luxury apartment than an airport lounge.

luxury travel company ps

Privacy has always been a top priority for PS and that will never change. Since the suites are fully enclosed and not shared with anyone else, guests can take their masks off while inside — something that isn't possible anywhere in the main terminal. The suites are also fully sanitized in between stays.

The suite featured several different seating options and a day bed that could be made upon request. While I could have easily spent the night there, PS isn't a hotel. Guests can use their suites for up to three hours before or after their flights, though if a flight is delayed, PS will typically allow you to stay there as long as necessary.

Something else that hasn't gone away is the fully stocked pantry and wet bar, but we'll get more into that later.

luxury travel company ps

As previously mentioned, my suite featured a private outdoor patio. It was fairly spacious, furnished with several sofas and chairs. There was even a yoga mat and lawn games that could be set up upon request.

Although suite #13 is the only one with a garden attached, there are common outdoor spaces that could be used by guests staying in other suites. There also are dedicated pet relief areas.

luxury travel company ps

Finally, each suite had its own half-bath. It was extremely chic with white Carrara marble, gold accents and a fancy electronic Toto toilet.

luxury travel company ps

Food and beverage

Predictably, PS doesn't let guests go hungry during their stays. For starters, as mentioned, there's a fully stocked pantry and bar in every suite. All of the alcohol is top-shelf and the brands of snacks are high-end — and unlike at a hotel, everything is included.

While the wall-mounted candy dispensers are no more, the same selection of items was still available in prepackaged baggies. Other snacks included Rxbar protein bars, Justin's organic peanut butter cups, Dirty kettle chips, Chomps beef sticks and Catalina Crunch keto cereal, among others.

Drinks couldn't leave the suites due to the TSA's liquid rules, but there was a paper lunch box I could fill with snacks for the flight.

luxury travel company ps

For something more substantial, there's an entire menu of prepared foods guests could order from. The current menu is catered by Mendocino Farms and included items like a Peruvian steak sandwich, chicken and prosciutto salad, and mixed fruit smoothies. That said, PS will soon launch a new rotating culinary concept in partnership with The H.wood Group, which runs popular L.A. classics like Delilah, The Nice Guy and Bootsy Bellows.

For an extra fee, guests could also order off-menu items from just about anywhere — In-N-Out burgers are a popular request.

I sampled the avocado and quinoa superfood salad and Caprese sandwich. Both were fresh and tasty and I thought the portion sizes were quite generous. Like any other airport lounge these days , the food was delivered individually wrapped for sanitary reasons.

luxury travel company ps

PS wants to make its guests' travel experiences as worry-free and enjoyable as possible. Every amenity or service someone could need was either already in the suite or just a call away.

luxury travel company ps

Throughout the suite were a bunch of travel items for guests to take with them. These ranged from tech accessories like chargers, adapters and headphones to neck pillows, eye masks and more. There was even a full toy menu for children. The toys were also free to take and donated to charity if left behind.

luxury travel company ps

The wide selection of freebies continued in the bathroom. It was stocked with all sorts of travel-sized toiletries and over-the-counter medications, ranging from dental and shaving supplies to lint rollers and stain removers, vitamins and cough drops and much more.

luxury travel company ps

Spa services and other amenities that could be requested include manicures, massages and haircuts, all of which were free for members or available at an additional fee for everyone else. Another service that's always been available, but is even more relevant now, is the ability to arrange an in-suite doctor's visit, including on-site COVID-19 testing .

I partook in a 30-minute in-suite massage and it was incredible. Although there are ways to get massages in normal airport terminals , the difference here was that there weren't any PA announcements to disturb you. I was so relaxed that I totally forgot that I'd be boarding a flight just a few minutes later.

luxury travel company ps

For those that need to freshen up, there was a separate shower suite available with plush robes, slippers and, of course, a wide selection of toiletries. Other common spaces that were available included a conference room and garden.

luxury travel company ps

Tarmac transfer

As unique as the suites are, the standout feature of PS is its private TSA checkpoint. The security process is just like any other commercial flight, with one difference: there's never a line. Even if there are two customers on the same flight, PS times security so that they don't cross paths.

On the other side of security, there was a car waiting to whisk me to my plane, as well as a refrigerator full of drinks (remember: I couldn't take drinks from the suite since it was before security).

luxury travel company ps

PS has a few different types of cars available, but the flagship is the BMW 7 Series. It features an extremely luxurious interior with reclining leather seats, individual climate control and seat-back screens that could be used to control the SiriusXM radio or even browse the internet. Needless to say, I was quite comfortable on my roughly 10-minute drive to the plane.

luxury travel company ps

Guests can choose whether they wish to board the flight first or last. Upon arriving at the aircraft, I was met by another PS representative who carried my bag up the jet bridge and then a representative from the airline to escort me to my seat. The PS agents then waited at my gate until I was in the air. This way, if there's a mechanical issue and passengers need to deplane, I could've been driven back to my suite.

luxury travel company ps

All in all, PS says that the distance between the car to the plane door is just 70 steps for its customers, versus about 2,200 steps for the average LAX traveler.

The transfer experience is relatively similar for those using PS on arrival — just in reverse. Guests arriving from international flights are escorted through private customs and immigration processing in the PS terminal. There's also a new game-changer service called PS Direct, in which members can be driven straight from their domestic, commercial flight door to their final destination without stopping at the PS terminal — even with checked bags.

luxury travel company ps

Bottom line

Privacy while traveling is more important than ever in the age of coronavirus and that's something that PS has always excelled in. Between the private suites, seamless security checks, and planeside car transfers, you can enjoy many of the same perks as flying private , minus the jet.

After spending a few years perfecting logistics, PS has refined the actual passenger experience, adding that sense of luxury it lacked. Between the stylish suites, improved culinary offerings and new amenities and services, everything about the PS experience feels five-star from start to finish.

A visit to PS doesn't come cheap, but you do get what you pay for and it makes for an unforgettable travel experience. Given that visits include up to four guests and all the amenities tailored for kids, PS can be especially attractive for families who don't want to deal with the stress of navigating through the airport. Or, if you're traveling solo and don't need an entire suite, you'll soon be able to book a shared lounge at a much lower price.

PS has plans to expand to New York-JFK and Miami International Airport (MIA) within the next two years. While details are still scant, there's also an "American Express exclusive space" underway at the LAX location, which will likely be similar to the new "Salon" and the communal suite United used to offer and only for Centurion cardholders.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. This New Luxury Travel Company Features Carbon-neutral Trips to the Dolomites, Victoria Falls, Amazon, and More

The 30 itineraries — all tested by the founders — include adventures in the Seychelles, Rwanda, Dolomites, Yellowstone, and Slovenia.

Brit Sarah Dusek and her American husband Jacob Dusek have always viewed the world through a lens of possibilities. The couple met in Taipei, Taiwan, nearly two decades ago and started out raising their two sons in Montana — all while they launched what has become one of the preeminent glamping companies in the country, Under Canvas . It disrupted the old standards of rustic camping and replaced it with chic, eco-friendly safari-style tents against the background of some of the most iconic U.S. destinations.

Now they’ve taken that same mindful model of meaningful outdoor experiences into the luxury travel space, debuting a new brand last month: Few & Far . It's a sustainable company dedicated to carbon-neutral exploration. “The heart of all of it is the magical connection there is when people connect with nature in extraordinary ways,” Sarah Dusek told Travel + Leisure.

Each of the 30 itineraries available on the site right now are ones that someone from the Dusek family has experienced first-hand, providing a personal level of curation and paired with a focus on putting sustainability first.

Among her favorite trips offered are the Rwanda Gorilla Trek and Masai Mara Wildlife Adventure , a 12-day itinerary with visits to Kigali and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Masai Mara in Kenya, and Zanzibar in Tanzania. She took a group of female CEOs on the journey last October, saying that “it was absolutely mind-blowing and extraordinary” and that “every single woman on the trip said it was by far the most incredible trip she’s been on.”

Another highlight is the five-day San Juan Islands Tented Camp Experience , a tailored group trip with accommodations set up specifically for each group. On Sarah Dusek’s own visit, she took about eight female CEOs there for a “boutique, five-star tented experience under the stars on a farm,” where they arrived by seaplane and then sea kayaked, hiked, and enjoyed outdoor farm-to-table dinners. The best part: every person could rest assured that their stay used 70 percent less water consumption than staying at an average hotel.

Her own family traveled last Christmas inspired the Enchanting Southern Africa itinerary, a 12-day getaway from Cape Town up to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, before heading to a houseboat on the Chobe River in Botswana. “It was so special because you could be right on the water watching the wildlife morning, noon, and night,” she said. “The boys could fish and we could traverse up and down the Zambezi, experiencing a different view each day.”

After that, the trip boards the luxurious Rovos Rail through Hwange National Park in Bulawayo to Pretoria, before ending in Johannesburg.

Having test-driven every single one of the itineraries on her own is what makes Few & Far’s curation so special. “All of these are very personal to us,” Sarah Dusek said. “They're an expression of who we are — and we love to share them.”

Launching a new travel company was never the intention, with the Duseks selling off Under Canvas in 2019 and moving their family to Cape Town, where they worked as venture capitalists helping empower and fund female entrepreneurs. But they continued to be avid travelers, committed to exposing their sons, now 12 and 15, to as many cultures and perspectives as possible.

During a trip to the Forgotten Mountain’s remote region in northern South Africa’s Limpopo province along the Zimbabwe border, they knew they had stumbled upon something special in UNESCO’s Vhembe Biosphere Reserve . Soon, they had bought a 10,000-acre space, where they’re now set to debut as the 60-room Few & Far Luvhondo eco-lodge at the end of this year. Inspired by weaver bird nests, the site will include a solar-powered aerial experience with a cable car system featuring a 40-kilometer (about a 25-mile) track to provide a uniquely immersive way to explore the African bush and its wildlife.

“We hadn't planned on coming back to the commercial travel space again, but are still so passionate about travel and we still love curating extraordinary experiences,” Sarah Dusek said. “We kept thinking about the safari experience and how to reimagine it for our children and how we could incorporate conservation and travel.”

That forward-thinking eco-first philosophy is what drives all of the Duseks’ efforts. “Outdoor tourism can do so much good,” Sarah Dusek said. “There can be so much harmony with creating an economy, stimulating jobs, preserving wildlife, making sure that our habitats are protected, and that we don't lose biodiversity.”

In fact, through a combination of conservation efforts — largely from tree planting, as well as wetlands management, rewilding, and restoring — the eco-lodge should be on track to sequester as much as 100,000 more tons of carbon a year than it currently does. That’s especially meaningful since the 10,000 acres they own have more biodiversity than in all of Europe.

Additionally, she started looking at the possibilities of helping the rural people, many of whom live in poverty and are generating a revenue stream through tourism. “You start educating people about the difference of what happens when we conserve and protect the land and start investing in the people and then you start to ripple effects in so many levels," she said.

Ultimately, what drives Sarah Dusek is her own dedication to instilling these values in her kids. “I want to show my kids how extraordinary our planet is and I want them to fall in love with it,” she said. “When you're out in it, magic happens and the chances of falling in love with the planet are infinitely greater.”

All of those facets come together in each of the trips through Few & Far — and she hopes that every traveler will be taken by the impact of their adventures. “Travel changes us and has the power to change a belief pattern,” she said. “It shows us that the way we live is not the way everyone lives and maybe not the right way to live.”

In particular that happens the most when she’s out on the great outdoors. “The more time I have spent in the natural world, the more I learn about the people, behaviors, patterns, and cultures in our world,” she said. “That makes us richer and gives us all a chance to realize gosh, all the little things matter.”

For a full list of Few & Far’s trips, which range from $10,000 to $50,000 per trip, visit Few and Far's site .

During the 20th century, the square became famous as the site for demonstrations designed to showcase Soviet strength. Visiting the Red Square today, you’ll find it teeming with tourists, who come to witness its magical architecture up close!

The Red Square

The square is the picture postcard of Russian tourism, so make sure to bring your camera when you visit! No matter the season, or the time of day, it’s delightfully photogenic!

It’s also home to some of Russia’s most distinguishing and important landmarks, which we’ve made sure to include further down in this itinerary. It’s an important center of Russia’s cultural life and one of the top places to visit in Moscow!

In 1990, UNESCO designated Russia’s Red Square as a World Heritage site. Visiting this historic site is a true bucket-list event and essential addition to your itinerary for Moscow!

Day 1 / Stop 2 – The Moscow Kremlin

  • Why it’s awesome: The Moscow Kremlin complex includes several palaces and cathedrals and is surrounded by the Kremlin wall. It also houses the principal museum of Russia (the Kremlin Armory).
  • Cost: USD $15.00
  • Food nearby: Bosco Cafe is a charming place to grat a casual bite to eat. They have excellent coffee and wonderful views of the Red Square and the Moscow Kremlin!

The iconic Moscow Kremlin , also known as the Kremlin museum complex, sits on Borovitsky Hill, rising above the Moscow River. It is a fortified complex in the center of the city, overlooking several iconic buildings in the Red Square!

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

Insider Tip: The Kremlin is closed every Thursday! Make sure to plan this stop on your Moscow itinerary for any other day of the week!

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Lenin’s Mausoleum

  • Why it’s awesome: The mausoleum displays the preserved body of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin .
  • Cost: Free!
  • Food nearby: Khinkal’naya is a charming Georgian restaurant with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick. It’s a popular place with locals and right next to the Red Square!

Lenin’s Mausoleum, also known as Lenin’s Tomb, is the modernist mausoleum for the revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin. It’s located within the Red Square and serves as the resting place for the Soviet leader! His preserved body has been on public display since shortly after his death in 1924.

It’s located just a few steps away from the Kremlin Wall and is one of the most controversial yet popular Moscow attractions!

Admission is free for everyone, you’ll only need to pay if you need to check a bag. Before visitors are allowed to enter the mausoleum, they have to go through a metal detector first. No metal objects, liquids, or large bags are allowed in the mausoleum!

Lenins Mausoleum

Expect a line to enter the building, and while you’re inside the building, you’ll be constantly moving in line with other visitors. This means you won’t be able to spend as long as you’d like viewing the mausoleum, but you’ll still be able to get a good look. Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.

The mausoleum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – unless it’s a public holiday or a day scheduled for maintenance. The hours it’s open for each day are limited, make sure to check online before you visit to make sure you can fit this into your Moscow itinerary for that day!

Insider Tip: The Lenin’s Museum is there for people to pay their respect; remember to keep silent and move along quickly, it’s not intended for people to congregate around. Also, men are not allowed to wear hats and everyone must take their hands out of their pockets when inside the building.

Day 1 / Stop 4 – St. Basil’s Cathedral

  • Why it’s awesome: A dazzling designed cathedral that showcases Russia’s unique architecture. This cathedral is one of the most recognizable symbols of the country!
  • Cost: USD $8.00
  • Food nearby: Moskovskiy Chaynyy Klub is a cozy cafe serving food items and pipping hot tea; it’s the perfect place to go if you’re visiting Moscow during the winter months!

Located in the Red Square, the ornate 16th-century St. Basil’s Cathedral is probably the building you picture when you think of Moscow’s unique architecture. Its colorful onion-shaped domes tower over the Moscow skyline!

The cathedral was built from 1555-1561 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It was designed with an iconic onion dome facade and enchanting colors that captivate all who see it. Fun fact: If you’re wondering why Russian churches have onion domes, they are popularly believed to symbolize burning candles!

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

Insider Tip: During the summer months the line to go inside the cathedral can get quite long! Make sure to arrive early or reserve your tickets online to guarantee quick access into the cathedral!

Day 1 / Stop 5 – GUM Department Store

  • Why it’s awesome: This is Russia’s most famous shopping mall! It’s designed with elegant and opulent architecture and provides a real sense of nostalgia!
  • Cost: Free to enter
  • Food nearby: Stolovaya 57 is a cafeteria-style restaurant with a variety of inexpensive Russian cuisine menu items including soups, salads, meat dishes, and desserts. It’s also located inside the GUM department store, making it very easily accessible when you’re shopping!

The enormous GUM Department Store is located within the historic Red Square. It has a whimsical enchantment to it that sets it apart from your typical department store.

A massive domed glass ceiling lines the top of the building and fills the interior with natural sunlight. There are live plants and flowers placed throughout the mall that give the shopping complex a lively and cheerful feel! A playful fountain sits in the center, further adding to the malls inviting a sense of wonder and amusement!

The GUM department store opened on December 2, 1893. Today, it includes local and luxury stores, including Fendi, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and many more! There are numerous cafes, restaurants, and even a movie theater inside!

GUM Department Store

Cosmonautics Museum | Alexander Garden | Ostankino Tower | Izmaylovo District | Soviet Arcade Museum

Now that we’ve covered what to do in Moscow in 2 days, if you’re able to spend more time in the city you’re going to need more attractions to fill your time. Here are a few more really cool things to do in Moscow we recommend!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

  • Hear the timeline of the ‘space race’ from the Russian perspective
  • This museum is fun for both adults and children!
  • Admission is USD $4.00

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Don’t Forget Your Travel Insurance for Moscow

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

20-year-old man missing after jumping off a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, report says

  • A 20-year-old man on holiday with his family went overboard from a Royal Caribbean cruise.
  • The man, who's been missing since early Thursday morning, may have jumped, a report said.
  • The US Coast Guard has launched a search operation.

Insider Today

A 20-year-old man who was vacationing with his family on a cruise may have jumped overboard, The New York Post reported.

Royal Caribbean confirmed that a passenger, whose identity has not been revealed, went overboard near The Bahamas at about 4 a.m. on Thursday and has been missing since then.

The US Coast Guard launched a search for the passenger on Thursday.

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson told Business Insider that the cruise line's "Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest's family during this difficult time."

Bryan Sims, a fellow cruise passenger, told The New York Post that he'd hung out with the passenger in the hot tub until 3:30 a.m. Sims said the man appeared to be "pretty drunk."

Sims told the Post that after leaving the hot tub, they encountered the passenger's father while approaching the elevators.

"His dad was fussing at him for being drunk," Sims said.

Related stories

Deborah Morrison, another passenger on board the cruise, told the Post that "there was a lot of yelling and that the crew was alerted immediately."

"The ship's crew immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the US Coast Guard, who has taken over the search," the Royal Caribbean spokesperson said.

The Liberty of the Seas departed from South Florida and was 57 miles from Great Inagua in The Bahamas when the passenger went overboard.

The cruise ship has 18 decks and can accommodate up to 3,634 passengers. It's served by a crew of about 1,300.

The chances of falling overboard on a cruise ship are extremely low .

In 2023, about 31 million passengers traveled on a cruise, and at least 10 people went overboard, with two of them surviving, Business Insider reported .

"Even one incident is one too many," a spokesperson for Cruise Lines International Association told Business Insider, adding that "the vast majority of cases are either reckless behavior or some form of intentional act. People don't just inadvertently fall over the side of a ship."

Last month, a 23-year-old man who felt seasick fell overboard from the MSC Euribia cruise ship while crossing the North Sea in Europe and was presumed dead.

In December, an MSC Cruises passenger jumped from one of its ships while sailing from Europe to South America.

According to a CLIA report, only 28.2% of passengers who fell overboard between 2009 and 2019 were successfully rescued.
