Lynyrd Skynyrd Announce 2021 ‘Big Wheels Keep on Turnin” Tour

Farewell tours are so 2020. After the pandemic derailed Lynyrd Skynyrd ‘s Last of the Street Survivors Farewell Tour , the venerable Southern rock band are resuming and rebranding their trek: The Big Wheels Keep on Turnin’ Tour kicks off June 13th and includes 30 dates into November.

The group’s core members — founding guitarist Gary Rossington, singer Johnny Van Zant, and guitarist Rickey Medlocke — spoke about their decision to remain a touring act in a new video interview .

“Covid turned our world upside down. And since that time, we have been talking amongst the band, and realized that music has such a way of healing. Maybe it’s not our time to go,” Rossington said. “And maybe it’s our time to lift people’s spirits and lives and bring back some joy and happiness after so much turmoil this past year. We’re still standing, still keeping the music going.”

Lynyrd Skynyrd performed their first show since the start of the pandemic this past weekend, headlining the opening night of the Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam in Panama City Beach, Florida.

The Big Wheels Keep on Turnin’ Tour includes an array of special guests, including Eighties rockers Tesla on most dates. Kansas, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Blackberry Smoke, Allman Betts Band and the Marshall Tucker Band will also appear on select shows. Tickets are available online here .

In April, Synyrd released Lynyrd Skynyrd: Live at Knebworth ‘76 , a DVD, CD and LP set documenting a classic-line performance from the U.K.’s Knebworth Festival in 1976.

Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top announce 2024 tour with stops in 36 cities: See the list

American classic rock wizards ZZ Top  and  Lynyrd Skynyrd  are uniting for another co-headlined North American tour.

The Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour will take over 36 cities across the nation in 2024, both bands unveiled Monday.

The tour kicks off March 8 at Enmarket Arena in Savannah, Georgia before making stops throughout the Southeast in the spring. After a more than three-month break between April 20 and Aug. 9, the tour wraps up in Ridgefield, Washington on Sept. 22.

Special guests on the tour are Black Stone Cherry and the Outlaws, the bands announced.

What to know about ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd

ZZ Top, a blues rock band from Texas known for hit songs including "Legs" and "Sharp Dressed Man" while Southern rock Lynyrd Skynyrd's setlist staples often include "Free Bird," "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Simple Man."

The late Gary Rossington, a guitarist who died in March , formed Lynyrd Skynyrd with the late Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins, Larry Junstrom and Bob Burns in 1964. Van Zant died in a 1977 plane crash along with guitarist Steve Gaines and backup singer Cassie Gaines.

ZZ Top lead singer and guitarist Billy Gibbons, formed the band in Houston in 1969 with drummer Frank Beard and bassist and vocalist Dusty Hill, who died in 2021.

About ZZ Top:

“That Little Ol’ Band From Texas” has been at it for well over a half century delivering rock, blues and boogie on stage and studio to millions of devoted fans. With iconography as distinctive as their sound, ZZ TOP is globally recognized with their beards, hotrod cars, spinning guitars and that magic keychain, all of which transcend geography and language.

It was in 1969 Houston when ZZ TOP coalesced from the core of two rival bands, Billy Gibbons’ Moving Sidewalks and Frank Beard and Dusty Hill’s American Blues. ZZ Top’s 1973 release, Tres Hombres , catapulted them to national attention with the hit “La Grange,” still one of the band’s signature pieces today.  Eliminator , their 1983 album was something of a paradigm shift for ZZ TOP. As a touring outfit, they’ve been without peer over the past five decades, having performed before millions of fans over four continents and have been the subject of their own Grammy-nominated documentary titled That Little Ol’ Band From Texas.   The band’s line-up of the bearded Gibbons and Hill and Beard, who ironically is clean shaven, remained intact for more than 50 years.  When Dusty temporarily departed the tour in the summer of 2021, Elwood Francis entered the picture accepting the directive from Dusty to be the perfect choice to stand in on the bass-guitar and now handles the low-end duties for the band for the present as well as into the future.

The elements that keep ZZ TOP fresh, enduring can be summed up in the three words of the band’s internal mantra: “Tone, Taste and Tenacity”. As genuine roots performers, they have few peers. Their influences are both the originators of the form – Muddy Waters, B.B. Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top Announce Co-Headlining Sharp Dressed Simple Man 2024 Tour — See the Dates!

Southern rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top are teaming up!

After touring together last year, the two bands announced The Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour 2024 on Monday, unveiling 36 concerts set to take place from March through September of the upcoming new year.

"Skynyrd Nation!! We heard ya! We're bringing the Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour with @ZZTop to a city near you in 2024," wrote the "Sweet Home Alabama" group on X (formerly Twitter). "We can’t wait to celebrate 50 Years of Skynyrd with you!"

Currently featuring a lineup of Rickey Medlocke, Johnny Van Zant, Michael Cartellone, Mark Matejka, Peter Keys and Keith Christopher, Lynyrd Skynyrd was originally formed in 1969. The group released its first album (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd) in 1973, so this past year has marked the 50-year anniversary of its official debut.

The Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour 2024 kicks off March 8, 2024, in Savannah, Georgia, before the two bands play shows across North America and wrap the run on Sept. 22, 2024, in Ridgefield, Washington.

Throughout the tour, Black Stone Cherry will appear as opening act from March 8 through April 20, while The Outlaws will support the shows from Aug. 15 through Sept. 22.

Tickets for the concerts are available on presale from Oct. 31 at 10 a.m. local time through Nov. 2 at 10 p.m. local time. General on-sale tickets become available at 10 a.m. local time on Nov. 3. More information regarding tickets is available on Lynyrd Skynyrd's website .

In a new interview with Real Music With Gary Stuckey , LYNYRD SKYNYRD guitarist Rickey Medlocke spoke about the band's decision to go on following the death of Gary Rossington , the last original member left in the iconic southern rock group, in March 2023. He said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET ): "We hear a lot of, 'Oh, it's nothing but a tribute band.' Well, they even said that when Gary was still alive. But here's the way I look at it. You've got the original singer's youngest brother [ Johnny Van Zant ] that has been in there almost 37 years. You've got me. That's my second go-round with the band, and I was in the original group, the formidable group. And you had Gary , an original founding member. Well, to us, us three guys standing upfront, we were, like, 'No, no, no, no, no, no.'"

He continued: "A tribute band is a band of all strangers that love to play cover songs and decide one day they're gonna be a LYNYRD SKYNYRD tribute band. There's a ton of 'em on YouTube . When you come to see LYNYRD SKYNYRD , when you come to see us, it's full-on tilt original-sounding, as close as you could ever possibly get. So the people sitting there behind their little computer keyboards and talking shit, they can talk that shit all they want to. My word is if you can do better than me, step up. You know what I mean? Come on. Come on with it. Because Johnny and I right now promised Gary — Gary made us promise that we would never, ever let the integrity of the band and the music history of the band, never let it be forgotten. Just all of a sudden, he's gone, the band's gone, and you might hear it on radio every once in a while, or people get together for a barbecue and they play the music or whatever. We got so much corresponding comments, letters, notes, e-mail, text messages, and the one deciding factor was, 'Please, don't let this be the end of it.' Well, okay."

Medlocke added: "If you really stop to think about this, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards is the only original members in THE ROLLING STONES . I mean, Ron Wood 's been there a long time, but Mick Jagger and Keith Richards is the original guys standing there. And they've got all different musicians playing with them now.

"So, look, it's what we do. We play music. This is what we do. And you know what? Nothing is better than standing on that stage looking at that audience and looking at their faces. They're happy. They have forgotten their troubles, their blues, they've forgotten about world crisis. They're in the moment and they're loving it."

Medlocke 's latest comments echo those he made last summer in an interview with the MediaNews Group . At the time, he said about LYNYRD SKYNYRD 's decision to carry on: "I've been here over 27 years now. I've been here to see quite a few members move on, pass away, and it doesn't get any easier. We had been at a crossroads several times about whether to go on or whatever and had always maintained that it wasn't about each individual or anything like that. It was about the music that was created by those guys — Ronnie [ Van Zant , Johnny 's older brother], Gary , Allen [ Collins ]. So we made the decision to carry on with the music because, bottom line, the music is what is important."

After four SKYNYRD members were killed in an October 1977 plane crash, Rossington recruited Johnny to fill his brother's shoes a decade later.

Medlocke , who played drums in SKYNYRD in 1970-71 before leaving to lead his own band BLACKFOOT and coming back to SKYNYRD in 1996, previously defended LYNYRD SKYNYRD 's decision to continue, telling Cleveland.com in May 2023: "People have beat us up over the years: 'Ah, you guys ain't nothin' but a freakin' tribute band' and blah, blah, blah.

"There's a lot of tribute bands out there to LYNYRD SKYNYRD , but none of them holds it as dear to their hearts as the guys who have been there as long as we have," he explained. "We have the history; I played on the first (recording) sessions. We just know that we have to portray the music with the integrity and the sound and the love as close as we can to when it was originally created."

Rossington was the last surviving founding member of LYNYRD SKYNYRD . On March 5, 2023, his bandmates announced the news of his death in a statement shared on their social media.

The guitarist had previously dealt with various heart problems throughout the years, including emergency heart surgery in 2021.

Rickey Medlocke Lashes Out After Some Suggested Lynyrd Skynyrd Is Nothing More Than a Tribute Band

Back in 1964, Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, Larry Junstrom, and Bob Burns joined together to create Lynyrd Skynyrd . Thanks to hit songs like “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Free Bird”, the band gained legendary status. Besides Rolling Stone listing them on their list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, the band gained entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Sadly, in 2023, Rossington passed away. With no more original members, many have called the ongoing band nothing more than a tribute act. And for guitarist Rickey Medlocke, he is tired of people “talking s**t” about the current lineup.

For Medlocke, his time with Lynyrd Skynyrd isn’t new. First joining the band back in 1971, the musician eventually left but returned in 1996. Remaining part of the lineup for almost the past 30 years, he took offense to those who criticized the band. 

Speaking on Real Music With Gary Stuckey , the guitarist said, “We hear a lot of, ‘Oh, it’s nothing but a tribute band. ‘Well, they even said that when Gary was still alive. Rickey Medlocke Calls Out Trolls Who Believe They Can Do Better

Tired of all the criticism, Medlocke offered a solution. “The people sitting there behind their little computer keyboards and talking s**t, they can talk that s**t all they want to. My word is if you can do better than me, step up. You know what I mean? Come on. Come on with it.”

While lashing out at online trolls, Medlocke isn’t about to quit and that is due to Rossington. “Gary made us promise that we would never, ever let the integrity of the band and the music history of the band, never let it be forgotten. Just all of a sudden, he’s gone, the band’s gone, and you might hear it on radio every once in a while, or people get together for a barbecue and they play the music or whatever. We got so much corresponding comments, letters, notes, e-mail, text messages, and the one deciding factor was, ‘Please, don’t let this be the end of it.’ Well, okay.”
