Once you have settled in, just take a walk around the area, and acquaint yourselves with the surroundings.

You might as well, take an auto or walk till the Mall road, and indulge in some shopping.

The best way is to start the day with a relaxed breakfast at Rocky’s Cafe . For this you’ll have to go all the way till Manu Temple.

After having a nice hearty breakfast, you can either choose to make Rocky’s Cafe your Workstation With a View, or can slowly start descending, taking your time, and checking out anything that catches your eye.

Your next step can be Renaissance for some delicious Pizzas or the Drifter’s Cafe for some Pizzas, Burgers or Pasta.

As you further descend down, you will reach Evergreen Bakery . Stop here, and do try out some of the yummy sweets they sell. You might like to try out the Chocolate Macaroons or the Carrot Cake or anything else.

Next depending on what time it is, you can go to the river side, and soak in the quintessential Old Manali vibes.

You can even cross the river, and enjoy a stroll to Hadimba Temple.

While you are near Hadimba Temple, you might also want to check out Southern Souls , if you are craving some delicious South Indian food.

You can call it a day, whenever you feel tired, or when it starts to get dark.

Day 3 of this One Week Trip to Manali is reserved for a Road Trip to Lahul Valley via Atal Tunnel . Atal Tunnel aka Rohtang Tunnel, built under the Rohtang Pass, that took around 10 years to be fully operational, has become the most famous attraction for everyone who is visiting Manali.

At a length of 9.02 kms, Atal Tunnel is the longest tunnel above 10,000 feet , and cuts the travel time between Manali and Leh by around 3-4 hours. You enter the tunnel in Manali and end up in the Lahul Valley . And the very fact that you can travel from Manali to Sissu in 15-20 minutes via the Atal Tunnel is what has turned Atal Tunnel into the most talked about attraction in and around Manali.

Under ideal conditions, one can go all the way till Baralacha La Pass and come back to Manali on the same day, however if you take your time, there are plenty of nooks and corners enroute Darcha, where you can spend time just enjoying the moment and the scenery.

One can always take a cab, however to truly experience the thrill of riding through the Atal Tunnel and immersing yourself in the surroundings, go on a bike / scooty.

PS – There are plenty of places from where you can rent a 2 wheeler in Manali.

Deemed to be the prettiest grassland trek in Himachal, the Bhrigu Lake Trek is something that should definitely be on your radar, which is why I have added the Bhrigu Lake Trek in this 7 Day Manali Travel Itinerary.

While the best time to do the trek is definitely between May and September , when it’s all green and the clouds are at your level, one can trek up to Bhrigu Lake practically any time of the year, subject to the weather conditions.

Please note that the temperature during summers hovers around 20-25 C in the daytime and falls to 5-7 C at night. In winter the temperature gets lower with 10-15 C around daytime and nearly 0 to -7 C at night. Almost half a year the lake remains frozen, and one can enjoy the sight of snow even during the early summer time.

Bhrigu Lake Trek is a Easy – Moderate level trek, and can be easily done in 2 days, provided it hasn’t snowed yet , as snow makes the trail more tricky and you need to be cautious and you ultimately end up taking more time

On Day 1 you trek for roughly 4-5 hours covering a distance of 6 kms from the starting point at Gulaba at an altitude of 9000 feet until the campsite at Rola Kholi, which is at an altitude of 12,500 feet.

On Day 2 you start early in the morning and start the 4-5 kms trek uphill to reach Bhrigu Lake from Rola Kholi. Ideally it should take you around 3-4 hours to reach Bhrigu Lake, which is at an altitude of 14,000 feet , while taking intermediate breaks enroute to snack on and to enjoy the mesmerising views of the mighty Himalayan Peaks including Deo Tibba and Hanuman Tibba.

A 30 – 45 minute stoppage at Bhrigu Lake should be more than enough for you to take it all in !

On the way down, it shouldn’t take you more than 2 hours to reach back to the campsite Rola Kholi, where you have your brunch / lunch.

If you happen to go with any trek company, chances are that you’ll stay back at the campsite for the night, but we recommend you to start heading back to Gulaba by 2 – 3 PM max.

As it’s all downhill, you should be back to Gulaba by 6 PM, and you can go back to your hotel/hostel – take a relaxing hot shower, have a hearty meal, and have a good night’s sleep.

Yes, you will be stretching it out on Day 2 and will be walking for almost 16 kms, but trust me, it’s better than staying an extra night in the tents, and walking down on the 3rd day.

Alternatively, you can also check out the Lama Dugh Trek, if Bhrigu Lake Trek is not feasible.

A 45 minute – 1 hour drive from Old Manali is Hallan Village – A quaint hamlet in the lap of Himalayas, away from the chaos of Manali. And in this quaint hamlet, you will find a couple of rustic home-stays and hostels, with unparalleled views of the majestic Himalayas, that can be your new Workstation with a view .

If you are lucky and there are clouds in the sky, you will fall in love with the setting, as the skies in front of you will be a canvas dotted with clouds, and numerous colours during sunrise and sunset.

The best thing about spending the day in Hallan – 1 , is that there are no distractions, and you don’t have to go anywhere looking for food, meaning you can be at peace, and have your creative juices flowing.

Being away from the hustle bustle of city life and the crowd that Manali attracts , Hallan – 1 is without a doubt, one of the best places to be based out of during your Workation in Manali as you can easily Disconnect wIth the World and Re-Connect with yourself.

As it’s the last day of this 7 Day Manali Travel Itinerary , you can either wake up early and catch one last sunrise in paradise or can take it slow and wake up whenever you do without having to worry about the alarm.

Take in the last few moments of the bliss, soak it all in, and post lunch head back to the bus stop and take the bus to Chandigarh / Delhi.

#1 If you don’t want to do a long trek such as Bhrigu Lake Trek or Lama Dugh, you can opt for shorter hikes around Manali. And the ones that I’ll recommend are a hike up to Jogni Waterfalls , and a hike to Manali Wildlife Sanctuary , which is one of Manali’s Hidden Wonders.

I’ve only been to Manali as a child and I really do not remember it being so gorgeous! I love how your itinerary is not the cliche, common one that travel companies offer. Bhrigu Lake seems to stand out for me and would be the obvious choice to include in my itinerary. I’d love to spend time exploring Old Manali as well. Trekking and camping are two favourite activities, so those are definitely going in my list of things to do in Manali.

Manali is a beautiful place and it was my first ever trip to North India back 8 years. I can’t believe it’s so long I haven’t visited Himachal. I did touristy things but didn’t know it has so many things to do. This looks ideal itinerary to spend the best time in the mountain s. Arriving in Manali: Journey to the Mountains

Manali is well connected to the other parts of India through air, road and rail. You can reach the hill station through the following methods:

The nearest airport is Bhuntar Airport located around 50km from Manali in the Kullu district. It has regular flights from Delhi, Chandigarh, Shimla and other major cities by airlines like Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet, etc.

Taxis charge about ₹2000 to reach Manali from the airport. One can also take a bus which costs around ₹200 per person.

The closest major railway station is Joginder Nagar railway station , approximately 165km from Manali. It falls on the Pathankot–Jogindernagar narrow gauge railway line. The train route is incredibly scenic but takes around 10 hours from Pathankot.

From Joginder Nagar you can hire a taxi or take a Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) bus to cover the 6 hour onward journey to Manali.

The most popular way to get to Manali is by road. National Highway 21 connects Manali to Chandigarh and further to other major cities. The highway is well maintained with scenic views throughout. Luxury Volvo buses by HRTC provide a comfortable overnight journey from Delhi, taking about 14 hours.

You can also hire a private taxi or self-drive your own car on this route. Zigzag roads win you over with mountain vistas. Stopovers in towns like Karnal and Bilaspur can break the trip.

Day Trips from Manali: Nearby Gems to Explore

With its location in the hills, Manali serves as an ideal base to explore scenic destinations nearby. Some recommended day trips are:

Rohtang Pass

Located 51 km from Manali, the high mountain pass of Rohtang lies at an altitude of 3978 m. Visit to see snow even in summers and gorgeous views. Requires permit.

Solang Valley

Just 13 km from Manali, Solang is renowned for adventure sports like paragliding, zorbing and skiing. During summer you can hike here or picnic by the river.

Naggar Village

Before you’re all set to hit the road, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind:

Take your own car only if you have experience driving on hills, else hire a taxi
Be wary of hairpin bends, narrow paths and trucks along the way

A 5-Day Delhi To Manali Road Trip With Family

Planning a Manali Road Trip? Looking for useful travel tips? This ideal 5-day Delhi to Manali itinerary is what you need. You will particularly enjoy it if you prefer offbeat destinations, rather than exploring popular towns.

Before I further delve into details, let me tell you that I planned this Manali road trip with my parents. Other than a bit of Kullu Valley, we explored Hamta Valley and Hallan Valley.

Now, let’s get started…

Manali Road Trip

A family road trip, as I’ve experienced, can be just as wonderful as a road trip with friends. Though of course, a road trip with friends has its own perks, with the biggest benefit being the fact that you don’t need to pre-plan much in advance, with the family you need to plan a little in advance — just like I did on my Delhi to Manali road trip.

I planned my Delhi to Manali Road Trip after a blog invitation by Nissan Motors , where Nissan gave me their Sunny Automatic to test-drive and do a review on the car. You can read about the Nissan Sunny Review here . So yea, it was a sponsored trip at the company’s expense.

If you already do not know, I am a full-time travel influencer and I keep getting such sponsored trips. I quit my corporate career in the UK, moved to India and became a travel blogger in 2016. Since then, I’ve only been travelling and writing about my journeys. Read more about me in this article .

Now, coming back to the topic at hand, let’s discuss…

Delhi To Manali Route Map

To honestly admit, I didn’t visit Manali at all but a couple of other offbeat places close to Manali . I mean we only had three days to explore the region (with the other two days dedicated to a full-day drive to and from Delhi) and I didn’t want to waste them in Manali’s unforgiving traffic.

So cutting Manali off our Manali Road Trip destinations list, but yet not totally avoiding the beauty of the Kullu Valley, I carefully chose Hallan Valley as my first destination. Next up, was the town of Sethan . If you do not know, Hallan Valley is located 25km from Manali, and Sethan is located 15km from Manali.

Here’s the route map I followed during the Delhi to Manali itinerary…

If you decided to visit the Hallan Valley & Sethan (located in Hamta Valley) on your Manali road trip, let me tell you that both the places are located before Manali.

For Hallan Valley, catch the old-Kullu Manali highway from Kullu (towards Manali) and then follow the Hallan Road on your right, as you bypass the town of Naggar. Hallan Road remains pretty good in shape throughout the year. Government buses also run on this route.

For Sethan, however, reach the town of Prini (located 3 km before Manali) and then take the road to Hamta. Sethan is located at the 35th curve and about 9km from Prini. The road to Sethan is a little bad in shape and is a pretty steep climb.

There are no government buses running on the Prini-Sethan route and is only accessible by a 12-seater traveller, hired jeeps and private taxis/cars.

Hallan Valley: The First Stop

Hallan Valley is a tiny unheard-of valley consisting of nearly a dozen villages — most of which have no guest houses or any tourist facility for those wanting to spend a night.

I ended up exploring Hallan Valley for the first time while returning from my solo motorbiking trip to Spiti Valley in 2016. I luckily found someone who allowed me to stay in their house for a few days. Back then, there were no guesthouses. Now, Hallan Valley has got a family homestay. Since 2016, I’ve been travelling to Hallan Valley very regularly. Naturally, when I took my parents for a Manali road trip, Hallan Valley needed a visit.

Hallan Valley is an ideal place for those who want to experience a village setting and explore the local Himachali lifestyle.

We spent a day and a half in Hallan relaxing in the town of Charanag, with nothing much on our to-do list but simply soaking in the laid-back life around.

Next Up: The Town Of Sethan

Despite being offbeat, Sethan and Hallan are two very different places. Where Hallan Valley has a more traditional Hindu Himachali influence, Sethan is more Tibetan in its appearance. People in Sethan are the original immigrants of Spiti Valley and the adjoining valleys of Tibet.

Again, if you’re planning an offbeat Manali road trip, including Sethan and Hallan in your Delhi to Manali itinerary is a great idea. As I visited both with my parents, you can visit them with your family too. They’re also great to travel with friends. Both places are safe and equally beautiful. And speaking of the tourist crowd, well, there’s actually none.

Located approximately 800m higher than Manali, Sethan, with its 2800m elevation from the sea level, is a place for slow travellers. From Sethan, one can see the towering Dhauladhar ranges surrounding the village, and the river Beas flowing right next to it – perhaps a few thousand feet down.

We spent two full days in Sethan, as I took my mom and a few other guests (I also run a permanent camping site in Sethan) for hikes on both days. When I wasn’t (or sleeping late until the afternoon) my parents took their time befriending locals in the village, more than I ever did myself.

With two days being totally dedicated to driving, and the rest of the three days devoted to lazy explorations of Hallan Valley and Sethan, the 5 day Delhi to Manali road trip itinerary felt just as relaxing as a holiday in the Himalayas should be!

A few Useful Tips

Unlike me, if you cannot spare 5 days you need at least 3 days for any Delhi to Manali trip. This includes two days of journey and one day of exploring the place. The journey between the two destinations is almost 14 hours.
If you can, however, spare more than 3 days you can explore other places near Manali too. It is possible to spend a month in the area and keep exploring new destinations every day.
Other than the fuel, food and accommodation costs, there will be nearly 700 Rupees of toll taxes between Delhi and Chandigarh and about 150 Rupees of green tax as you enter Himachal Pradesh.
The route is currently under construction hence a lot of dust and rough patches on the way can be expected. The route becomes even worse during monsoon because of the slush.
You can find some traffic near Swarghat because all commercial lorries require you to pay state taxes and there is no additional lane for private traffic to pass.
You can do this route any time of the day because unlike other Himalayan routes, Delhi to Manali road is very broad and regularly maintained. There are proper shoulders and marking on curves and street lights wherever required.
It is also possible to hire a taxi from Delhi at a very good rate. You can even book an Uber or an Ola outstation.

I think a vacation with family can be a real help here, we can spend quality time so that we can appreciate each other, and your own vehicle can be a boon , ofcourse everyone can’t afford a Nissan-Sunny, but we can certainly hire a car and go exploring off beat places and can fill our relations with new colours. Manali, a resort town nestled in the mighty Himalayas , is one of the most famous hill stations in India. It is located in Pir Panjal and Dhualadhar range in Himachal Pradesh. As a travel destination, Manali is on everyone’s list – friends group, couples, family trip or even solo. Along with Manali, you can visit Kullu, Kasol, and Manikaran – the Kullu Valley (often referred to as the ‘Valley of the Gods’). You can also plan to go to Dharamshala also known as The Little Lhasa which is just 8 hours away. In March 2019, I decided to go on a road trip to Manali with my friends. This year (2019) snowfall was comparatively heavier, making it a bit risky; but we wanted to enjoy in the snow so we decided to go ahead with our plan.

My Road trip to Manali

Journey begins..

We booked a car for our trip, packed some winter clothes and just hit the road from Chandigarh. We decided to take the route Chandigarh- Rupnagar- Barmana- Mandi- Kullu- Manali via NH 205 and NH 3 – about 310 km. Google maps estimated around 9-10 hours to reach Manali.

After getting on our car from the Elante mall, we started our journey around 9 pm. Just outside the city, we stopped to have dinner in a dhaba (highway-side restaurants in India). We had roti, dal makhani and tadka. The thing I love most about dhabas is the food, no matter what you order you can always trust that it would be good.

So, with a filled stomach and full fuel-tank, the journey started. As it was night we could see mostly the buses, heavy trucks on the road. The road can be pretty scary too, sharp turns, deep cliffs but our driver had a good handle over the car and we just dozed off on the rear seat.

Around 6 am in the morning when we woke up and saw the amazing view Manali had to offer. It was very foggy, we could barely see anything. The sunlight was leaking through the fog, it felt magical. As we ascended higher we could see snow on the roads, roofs of the houses and bikes

We had booked our stay in old Manali. It was freaking zero degrees – freshening up didn’t feel like an option ;-). We were very tired from the long journey so we just dozed off again under the cozy blankets.

Exploring the town and local-culture

We woke up after a good nap and went on foot to explore the famous Mall road of Manali. Breakfast was yummy instant-noodles and a soothing cup of tea.

The market area in Mall road was swarming with crowd. People bargaining with the vendors, shop keepers calling out people to their stalls, the place was very lively. The handmade painting on the wood with nameplates was a new thing to see. And the jackets, sweaters were so affordable you couldn’t resist buying them.

After exploring the market we went to the monastery present just next to the Mall road, the beautiful Buddha statue , the Tibetan flags were a treat to the eye. There was also a Tibetan museum nearby.

We then thought of calling up our cab driver for some local sightseeing. Our first stop was the Hidimba temple . It was nestled within beautiful pine trees. We saw and photographs with a furry rabbit for just Rs 20. We also tried on traditional pahadi costumes, with all flowers in basket and Jewellery . It was an interesting experience.

Next, we headed to Manu temple and Vashisht hot springs . It was freezing outside but the hot water was still flowing – such is the wonders of nature.

Having heard a lot about cafes of Manali , we decided to go to the Lazy Dog Cafe (after a lot of ‘googling’, obviously!). The place was as beautiful as it was in the pictures, the rooftop was starry, the bar was amazing and the staff were very hospitable. Since the month of March is not peak-season in Manali, it was less crowded. We enjoyed the ambiance, good food, and cocktails. We left the cafe around midnight.

We had hoped to see snowfall but we were not in luck!

Few snowy adventures

Continuing on our road trip, next in line was Rohtang pass. To our utter disappointment, we found that due to heavy snowfalls the roads were closed. 🙁

So we decided to go to Solang valley – the adventure hub of Manali . It took around two hours to reach there. The view of the Himalayas was mesmerizing. The snow-peaked mountains, the sunlight leaking through them and the long chain of pine trees looked no less than a painting.

On the way, we stopped to rent some snow-wear. The dresses were really funny and the snow-boots even funnier. We were very worried about looking like jokers on snow, but the biggest compensation was everyone was dressed like this.

There are many activities in the valley like zorbing, snow scooter, cable car ropeway, skiing, and the famous paragliding. The total package would cost you around Rs. 3000 but you can also choose to do individual ones.

We had a lot of fun throwing snowballs at each other, falling while trying to ski, riding the snow-scooter was hell scary. Although we spent hours on the snow, it felt like time had passed in a jiffy!.

Some useful information about Manali

How to reach.

The closest airport is Bhuntar, which is just 50 km away. You can get taxis and buses to Manali from here.

The nearest railway station is Una railway station (250 km). From there you have to go by bus for reaching Manali.

Manali is easily accessible from all major cities like Chandigarh, Delhi and Amritsar. Overnight buses are your best option, giving you time to explore during the day.

Manali also serves as a starting point for Leh-Manali bike trips – one of the most EPIC road trips ever. You can even take buses via the Manali-Keylong route .

Best time to visit Manali

April to June is the best time for a road trip to Manali. When the entire country is burning in the heat of summers, this place is still cool and the weather is pleasant. Monsoons should be avoided as the chances of landslides are high. The winters are harsh, so people who love the cold weather should visit during this time. Heavy winter clothes should be packed if going during December and January.

Places to eat in Manali

Here are few of the places that I would suggest:

Rose Garden ( Rs 1000 for two)
Johnson’s cafe (Rs 1200 for two)
Casa Belle Vista( Rs 800 for two)
Drifter’s cafe (Rs 800 for two)
Chopsticks (Rs 800 for two)

In the end…

A road trip to Manali is one of the most beautiful road trips you will ever come across. It cost us around Rs. 10,000 for a 3-day trip. It can be a lot less if you use public transport like buses. Overall I would definitely recommend Manali as a long-weekend-outing!

Manali Trip – Himachal Pradesh [An Ultimate Travel Guide for Everyone]

One of the most popular tourist places in Northern India is situated in Kullu District, Himachal Pradesh on the banks of Beas River and at an altitude of 1950 Meters or 6500 Feet (approximately) Manali, Valley of Gods. The term stands for Manu (Manu Rishi) + Aali (Home) and I bet you his home (Manali ;)) is just MAGICAL in nature.

Delhi to Manali Road Trip - An Ultimate Travel Guide

The place is ideal for families as well as young couples looking for some hide and seek with the flavor of romance on top of it. Manali is largely visited by the honeymoon couples (I did so, read my story Snow at Manali and Naggar | Honeymoon Trip ) and in summers people from all walks of life (children to old) come to Manali to seek pleasant weather from hot burning lands of Northern India.

Let's quickly dive into the details:

Manali Travel Guide

Manali is one of the oldest towns in Kullu Valley. The place surrounds with the aura of ROMANCE everywhere, right from the hustle-bustle of mall road to the very calm, traditional, foreigners dominated old Manali to the woods/villages around/beyond Manu temple to the walking path around Hadimba temple. It can easily be called one of the ROMANTIC destinations of India.

The Hadimba goddess runs the Manali town and is the center of worship of the people living at Manali. The mighty goddess also governs the tall mountains along with raw nature, and it’s only after her permission that one gets to enjoy this beautiful place to the core. When people think of Manali, the second keyword that comes is, of course, Rohtang Pass which no doubt is a must-visit place if you go to Manali.

Manali Weather

The weather in Manali offers a variety throughout the year. If you like the cold weather and snow, then you can enjoy winters from November to February. However, you can experience nice and pleasant Manali weather in summers from March to October.

I recommend that you avoid traveling to Manali in the month monsoons, late July to August and nowadays some part of September as well. Landslides and flooding are common on Delhi to Manali highway in monsoon time. You do not want to get stuck in the middle of it. Although July-August experience rainfall but this place has again, it’s unique beauty when it rains 🙂

Hence, the best time to visit Manali is March to June when the heat is burning the low lands of Northern India. Then during the autumn season from the middle of September to late October is also a nice time to visit it. However, during the Dusherra festival, the Kullu region gets very crowded.

If you are fond of snow or snowfall, then visit Manali from late December to March for enjoying the snow in Manali, Rohtang Pass, or Solang Valley. You may witness snowfall also in January and February, depending on the weather at the time of the visit.

No doubt it is one of the top places to see snowfall near Delhi in Himachal .

What is the best time to visit Manali

April to June is the best time to visit Manali, but do keep in mind that in summers (April-June), people from most Northern parts of India invade this place like anything and seeing the Mall road in the evening can cause serious shiver in your head. It’s almost you are in Trade Fair of Pragati Maidan, Delhi 😆

But if you enjoy it, then it’s an awesome time to visit Manali. Also, you can take the shelter in Old Manali in such extreme cases, which is far off from the hustle-bustle of the (over) crowd. Right from accommodation to food to shopping to taxi/auto fares, everything is costly in this peak season summer holidays in the Himalayas .

If you are looking for adventure sports then, hit for skiing December to February season is the best time and for rafting May to September would do good. All of you who seeks Paragliding in Manali, it’s always dependent on the weather on the current day of the year 🙂

What about Honeymoon in Manali?

For a honeymoon, of course, if you get married in winters, then late November to February is the best time to be in Manali. It is one of those places where you can find snow easily in winter months.

You get an additional benefit of the heavy discounts, being off-season topped with less number of tourists. Finally, you get to see similar love birds thronging the region of Manali and Solang Valley.

Hence, without any doubt, Manali does get to my list of best honeymoon places in Himachal .

What time to avoid?

Do avoid Durga Puja holidays mainly in October when the rush is at peak again, and people flood the Kullu Manali towns like anything. It is also the Dusherra Festival time in Kullu Valley with which also valley is under heavy tourist rush.

Also, there is an official HPTDC off-season at the time of monsoon and winters (usually mid-November to February) when they provide a 30% discount on their services.

How to reach Manali from Delhi

Manali is well connected by road from Delhi vis National Highways. You will find ample of public transport as well from Delhi to Manali or Chandigarh to Manali. Let us look into the various options of traveling to Manali by road.

The nearest airport to Manali is Bhunter about 50 km away. From Bhuntar-Kullu, you can hire a taxi to reach Manali in 90 minutes approximately. The fare of a taxi could be Rs 1000 – Rs 1200, depending upon the bargaining skills as well as season time.

Chandigarh is the closest major Railway Station from where it will take around 9 hours to reach Manali by bus or car. Apart from that Joginder Nagar railway station near Mandi can be considered as the nearest one. However, the connectivity can be limited to it from far-flung places in India.

Dheeraj Sharma

The distance of Manali from Delhi is 570 km (approximately) and it takes around 12-14 hours to reach depending upon traffic and how you drive.

Generally, the route followed for Manali from Delhi by road is –

Delhi – Ambala (188 KM) – Chandigarh – Roopnagar (282 KM) – Kiratpur – Bilaspur (371 KM) – Sunder Nagar – Mandi (440 KM) – Pandoh – Aut (481 KM) – Kullu – Manali (570 KM)

HPTDC Volvo Buses also run from Delhi at 6 PM every day from HPTDC Office, Janpath. These buses reach Manali the next morning around 8 AM. The fare is around Rs 1300-1400 for one side. The similar buses leave from Manali every evening at 5.30 PM and reaching Delhi by 7.00 AM the next morning. There are other daily buses available from HRTC as well from ordinary to Volvos that run between Delhi to Manali and Chandigarh to Manali.

Road Conditions from Delhi to Manali

Delhi to Manali roads run on NH-21 and NH-1 highways and are pretty much in great shape being a highway. In the entire route, there are one or two rough patches so that you never lose your concentration.

Especially, the drive from Kiratpur to Sunder Nagar is horrible with trucks running madly all over the road on both sides, slowing you down terribly. A slight Chandigarh to Roopnagar stretch is also in bad shape but the rest of the road conditions are pure bliss to drive.

Preferred Vehicles

The best way is to take your car/bike and hit the road as there is no such specialty required in the vehicle, be it 2X2 or 4X4. You can take it as long as its engine runs and fuel exists 😉

An alternate route to Manali from Delhi

The regular route to Manali via NH-21, that is Manali – Chandigarh Highway, is mostly in pathetic condition from Kiratpur Sahib to Bilaspur. The beelines of slow-moving trucks, chaotic overtaking of these overloaded trucks, and deep crater-sized potholes all around on almost 70 km of stretch. The journey becomes so tiring and frustrating…

For the last few times when I went to Tirthan Valley from Delhi , we took the route as

Kiratpur Sahib > Anandpur Sahib > Nangal > Una > then turn right towards Bhota > then again right towards Jahu > at T-Point, turn left towards Ner Chowk. Don’t go towards Sunder Nagar as you will lose a couple of hours then.

This is a bit longer route, maybe 55-60 km, but the time difference is almost about 40-45 minutes only. However, roads are super smooth all the way to cruise upon apart from last average roads of 25 km after Jahu to Ner Chowk. It does save you from all the frustration and risks of accidents.

So, better avoid the NH-21 route and take this route via Una – Bhota to reach Manali or beyond Mandi to Himachal .

Bus Service from Delhi – Manali

As per HRTC FB Page, both HRTC & HPTDC operates a total of six daily Volvo buses from Manali to Delhi. While HRTC charges ₹1283- for this service, HPTDC charges ₹1300/-. Travel time is roughly 14 hours (580 km).

Bus Timings from Manali : 3:00 pm, 4:00 pm, 5:00 pm, 5:30 pm, 6:00 pm, and 6:30 pm.

Bus Timings from Delhi : HPTDC (from Himachal Bhawan)- 6:30 pm, 7:30 pm; HRTC (from Delhi ISBT)- 7:35 pm, 8:00 pm, 8:25 pm, and 9:03 pm.

Common Itinerary for Manali Trip in 3 Days

From Delhi to visit Manali, you require at least 3 Nights, 4 Days and it would be great if you have more 🙂 But ideally, in 3 Nights / 4 Days, you can cover the majority of this place. I would also provide some add-on or pop-up day tours which you can include exclude as you like.

Day 0 / Night – Overnight from Manali to Delhi

Leave Delhi in the evening to reach Manali the next morning either by car/or Volvo bus. You can take a morning flight to Kullu as well which takes you to the first day.

Day 1 – Manali Local Sightseeing

Check-in at the hotel in Manali, rest for a few hours and go on for local sightseeing. This sightseeing may include Mall road (which of course you can’t avoid any day), Local Monastery, Hadimba Devi Temple, Manu Rishi Temple in the evening through the streets of Old Manali. You can have dinner at one of the traditional/western cuisine restaurants at Old Manali. Come back to the hotel for the rest.

Day 2 – Visit Rohtang Pass or Snow Points

Leave for Rohtang Pass early in the morning to avoid traffic jams. Mind it; it can be the worse jam of the trip, so be prepared. It is always better to avoid by leaving for Rohtang Pass from Manali early morning maybe 7 AM Come back to the hotel by the evening at around 4 PM to rest at the hotel and enjoy the mall road in the evening/night.

Day 3 – Visit Solang Valley

Visit Solang Valley if you want to do some adventure sports and enjoy the day there. Come back in the evening. Leave for the home in the night, either by taking the evening Volvo or by your own car.

Trip to Manali in 5 Days

Continuing the above 3-day itinerary of Manali trip for those who have more days in hand.

Day 4 – Visit Nagar Castle – Jagatsukh

If you are not interested in visiting a unique place, then include Naggar Castle in your trip with a night stay at Naggar Castle. Well, the views it offers are just breathtaking. So you can also opt for Naggar in place of Solang if you don’t like adventure sports, then replace this day with the trip to Naggar Castle, just 30 odd km from Manali.

For a honeymoon, it’s one of the best places to stay and must-visit for couples looking for an ideal romantic point . To get the glimpses of the views from Naggar Castle, check these links of my visit to this beautiful place.

You may take a day trip to Naggar and leave for Manali the same day if you don’t like much but better include a night stay at this lovely hotel. Next morning you can leave to Delhi from Naggar itself.

Jagatsukh comes on the way as well and it is one of the offbeat places in Himachal .

Day 5 – Visit Parvati Valley (Manali to Kasol)

Another set of places you may include on your Manali trip is that you leave for Kullu or Kasol in the evening. If it’s the penultimate day of the trip or early morning on any day if you have an ample amount of time. Just it would be great if you can do it on the way back home towards Delhi or a similar route.

Reach Kullu, shop in the market and head towards Kasol & Manikaran. Visit this holy place and leave for Kasol, where you can enjoy the evening in nice Israeli flavor. If you have time, then dedicate a day to Kasol and try to enjoy the environment to the core besides the Parvati River.

Leave for Delhi in the evening and reach by morning.

Where to stay in Manali

There are a lot of hotel options available in Manali for accommodation ranging from luxury hotels to budget range hotels. Well, I have been to all three kinds on my previous trips to Manali, and this is what I felt a nice list to narrow down the choices.

Of course, I would say these are just hotels known to me, or I have taken feedback from my family members who have stayed there 🙂

HPTDC, Kunzum : Hotel Kunzum is just on the Mall road provides you with ample facilities being on the Mall road. Everything is so nearby, and I would recommend it for families with children. Kids tend to demand this, and that now and then, which makes Hotel Kunzum a good choice as everything you get in Manali is so nearby. The range is Rs 1700 – Rs 3000
HPTDC, Hadimba Cottages / Log / Hamta Huts: These huts ideal for honeymoon lovers are located a bit isolated towards Old Manali, again which is what love birds seek. But, don’t catch it into very offseason as it may also scare a bit out of you being alone. At least we felt so when we stayed, and food is not that good quality. Johnson’s: Located near Circuit House is very famous for its cuisines. The rooms are comfortable and worth the money. Even if you don’t stay, do have a meal or two in its restaurant. The range is Rs 2200- Rs4000.
Picadilly Resort : This is at the start of Mall road and not at all a budget hotel. We stayed here in the very offseason, and still, we got a room for 1500 😯 I believe. But I must say the money was worth it as the hotel has all sorts of deserving offerings one would like.
HPTDC, Rohtang Manalsu & The Beas: This hotel is a bit away from the hustle-bustle of town but very moderate budget hotels. The range is 650-2000, and you can always stay here if you are short on budget.

So, if you are no short of the budget go for Johnson’s or Picaddily Resorts, although there are more luxury Hotels also available which you may check for sure.

If you are short on a budget either choose HPTDC, Rohtang Manalsu or HPTDC, The Beas or else you can very well walk to the streets of Old Manali where you will get excellent deals for some cheap hotels in Manali.

HPTDC is always a safe bet if you are in a dilemma for a cheap hotel, I believe.

Budget Hotels in Manali

You can find lots of budget hotels around Manali in Vashishth, Old Manali, and hotels on the Manali – Naggar road near Beas Bridge. The one at Manali – Naggar road named The River View and one just before that hotel are good and economic options of stay in Manali.

Where to eat

Johnson’s, located near Circuit House is very famous for its cuisines. A meal here is a must for us whenever we go to Manali.
Chopsticks , located at Mall road, has a great variety of Chinese dishes topped with great taste.
Grozy , located just at the start of Mall road shops is also quite good in food quality. In fact on the trip, we just had our meal in this restaurant only.
IL Forno is by far the best place for Pizzas in Manali. If you love Pizzas then do not forget to check this awesome place.
Sher-e-Punjab or Shan – e -Punjab (the original one) is also a good food joint although I have never been there due to long queues 😀

You should always carry your water bottle and refill it as many times as you need water. It will not only keep you hydrated always, but you will also help in saving the Himalayas from plastic garbage. Remember, every tiny step counts and your step in this direction can help save the Himalayas too !! 🙂 🙂

Tips to travel in winters

Do take heavy woolens with you especially a heavy woolen jacket.
Do take 2-3 pairs of inner thermals cots.
Do take woolen long socks. Airtight shoes would be perfect for helping you avoid freezing feet.
Do not exert yourself too much and try to keep your body hydrated on the day when visiting snow points.
Take at least one full day rest in Manali before venturing further heights. i.e., snow points in Solang or Gulaba. DO NOT go to snow points on the very first day you reach Manali region.
In winters (except Christmas – new year week) HPTDC runs about 30% off-season discounts [also valid for Naggar Castle]if you like to stay in their hotels. All other private hotels can offer as much as 40-50%.

Manali Tourist Attractions

There are several tourist places around Manali and inside Manali town which a tourist can visit. These places can be photographed clicked for some great memories in life. I will enlist some of them below.

Manali Local Sightseeing

Let us start with local sightseeing in Manali. You can check the below destinations within Manali town or quite nearby.

You can enjoy food and shop on this very road. There are few Hotels as well on the road, including Hotel Kunzum, HPTDC. There is one Temple as well at the Mall road just aside Bus and Taxi Stand.

Hadimba Temple

It’s near Circuit House approximately 15-20 minutes’ walk. Autos run all-time in Manali to take you to the local tourist joints but charge a bit high. I feel walking down to these places has the fun of its own kind.

Manu Temple

As you cross through the streets of lovely Old Manali, you will reach this temple. Chingu is what you will hear all over as you start entering the road. Don’t fall into the trap of salesman of buying it, most of them are duplicate makes.

Local Monastery

The local monastery is situated just a few 200 odd meters from the bus stand at Mall road. You can surely buy some souvenirs from the shops in front of the local Manali monastery.

Vashishth Hot Water Springs

Personally I didn’t like this place at all and considered it a total waste of time.

Trekking Trails near Manali

Other trails in the woods through local villages and old Manali can be enjoyed as well.

There is a trek from Old Manali, Manu Temple that goes to Goshal village about a couple of km. You can extend this trek further to Solang Valley which is about 10 km from there.
Then there is a trek to Lamadugh meadows , which starts from Hadimba Temple. It will take about 2-3 hrs for this trek and you will get to see snow-clad peaks and Manali town down below.
You may also travel to Bijli Mahadev from Kullu.

Rohtang Pass

At the altitude of 13,051 feet or 3978 Meters, this Pir Panjal Range pass is a must-visit for every tourist who goes to Manali. You can find snow throughout the year at this place and is reachable from May End – October. It connects the Kullu Valley to Lahaul-Spiti Valley and is one of the main blockage points of Manali – Leh Ladakh connectivity .

Solang Valley

Mountaineering and Allied sports Institute, Manali conducts various courses on skiing at this place, and if you love adventure sports, you may find this place very exciting. Along with this, it also offers snow-capped views of glaciers and even snow in winters. The place also helps in proper acclimatization if you wish to head Leh Ladakh. It will help you avoid AMS .

Naggar Castle

Naggar is just an amazing place that I have already explained in the itinerary section. If you are really looking for some romantic joint, Naggar Castle is surely the place to be. Do read more at Naggar Castle, Naggar .

It’s a major district of Himachal Pradesh and lies at the banks of Beas river. The airport Bhunter is just 10 km from this place, and you will find ample place to shop.

42 km from Kullu, Kasol situated at the banks of Parvati river is yet another place that is a must-visit and provides a unique experience with Israeli atmosphere dominating the air. It’s a hub of backpackers, and what they are after, you very well know. Do not forget to check my comprehensive travel guide of Parvati Valley .

It’s a Hindu and Sikh pilgrimage center located between the Beas and Parvati Rivers. Well, you may like it, or you may not like it. It’s a matter of taste but a couple of hours given to this holy place is worth enough.

Hot water springs about 10 km before Manali on the roadside itself. Thanks to Ajay for sharing this place with us at the comment here , will check next time I visit up there.

In the end, Manali and its nearby locations are a complete package for any vacation. The place suits a wide range of tourists with an even wider taste of spending time in the mountain. Keep a tab on weather reports as rains are happening. In case there is a prediction of heavy rains, better avoid traveling.

Is it a good time to visit Manali during last week of March? Will Rothang Pass visit be allowed during that time?

Rohtang Pass will be closed in March but you can enjoy Manali trip in March with snow points of Gulaba or Marhi

Hi Amit, the roads are well built from Delhi to Manali barring few patches of bad roads with potholes but nothing like off roading, just bad road conditions. Snow is not present on road up to Manali and beyond Manali better to hire a local taxi for sightseeing. IF you drive cautious and carefully and have good driving experience, the basics will help you drive to Manali from Delhi without much difficulty. Do not overtake ever on turns in mountains, do not over take unless you have clear visibility of traffic coming from opposite side because people do drive rashly and many times over take on turns. Be patient, you will get chance to overtake other slow vehicles but do not risk it.

I will suggest talking to your Pediatrician and ask his inputs for taking an infant on a long journey. Altitude-wise, Manali has vegetation and does not cause any health issues. Try avoid going higher than Manali.

Kindly suggest in this. Is it that dangerous to drive to manali during February 1st Week.

There is no such requirement to reach Manali Govind. Creta is more than capable to reach Manali on any day in a year. Yes, at time when there is heavy snowfall, the roads get filled with snow for a day or two but administration clears it soon as the weather clears up. During that time, no vehicle, including 4×4 can pass through. But that only happens if the heavy snowfall coincides with the date of travel.

Had a small query!! We are a group off 6ppl and are planning a bike trip from delhi to manali over a period of 5days between 11th to 15th august 2017. Is it advisable to visit manali on bikes during august? Are there any chances of landslides over the delhi manali route via shimla?? How difficult would the terrain be?

Well Riya, it will be rains in Himachal or North India during that time of the year. The roads are fine but with bikes you have to face the rain hassles all throughout in case it rains on those days which in general does every year. Roads are tarred up to Manali. There will be landslides or road blocks but then again, if it rains heavily it will not be possible to ride on bikes.

Delhi to Shimla is still fine as roads are wide and well laid out till Shimla. Also, there is no river nearby too in Shimla route. I will suggest to keep the options open, in case there are no rain predictions for the week, go for Manali trip else go for Shimla. But, be cautious and avoid taking unnecessary risks.

No roads are open in Himachal in July almost up to third week before the monsoon comes. Once monsoon comes to Himachal, landslides are common.

Mani, well, there are plenty of options in Shimla but I never prefer to stay in concrete jungle like it. For Manali, you may opt for Johnsons.

Actually, I am planning to Visit Manali in the last week of May for a full week and wanted to cover Rahtang Pass, Solang Valley and Kullu in first 4 days and then want to move Kajjiar which I believe approx. 400Km from Manali and from Kajjiar back to Gurgaon.

Yeah Sanjay, the roads to Manali are fine barring the stretech from Swarghat to Bilaspur where road conditions have pot holes and truck traffic but nothing a sedan cannot handle. Your plan looks fine to me. Have couple of spare days at least for Khajjiar.

4-5 days for both Shimla and Manali will be very hectic considering you planning the honeymoon. I will suggest to restric it to one of the places preferably Manali. You can opt for Johnson’s Cafe or Log Huts in Manali for it.

I will not suggest you undertake such a hectic plan. You should keep Agra for some other time in future and focus over just a relaxing holiday in Manali and around. The journey is 14 Hrs from Delhi to Manali and takes a toll on your body. Then again going over 8 Hrs journey for Agra and back will surely gonna exhaust you all !! Hence, best is to stick to Manali and enjoy it at leisure.

1. You can go for Johnson’s, both are near to mall road and exceptionally good. 2. Cabs should range from anywhere between 3000-4000 for a day trip to snow points. I suggest to skip Agra. Use Volvo to reach Manali from Delhi and Volvo to come back. No private volvo, only opt for HPTDC or HRTC volvos. For local sightseeing in Manali, hire local cab.

Yes Venkatesh, as long as the driver has slept for the day and fresh to drive the whole night, it is fine to travel overnight. All volvo buses of himachal tourism run overnight only.

HELLO sir me and my friend wants to go manali then rohtang pass on my bike from Delhi……We are planning to go there on 26th oct…Do you have Any Advice for us regarding permit do we go to rohtang pass same day when we got our permit if applicable….Someone said to rohtang pass you can go freely without a permit from SDM office if we go beyond rohtang pass we need a permit it is so confusing we book a hotel for 2 nights we just want see rohtang pass this time…Plz reply as soon as possible…

Atul, you will need permit for Rohtang Pass which can be issued from SDM office in Manali by showing the vehicle RC, PUC and your driving license.

3 Awesome Road Trips From Delhi To Manali

Manali is a gorgeous Himalayan hill station in Kullu Valley and an immensely sought after holiday spot in India. The hill station is well known for its snow-clad peaks in winters as well as adventure activities like trekking and white water rafting. Manali is also the doorway to Ladakh.

While in Manali, check out its popular attractions like the Rohtang Pass, Beas Kund, Vashist Hot Water Springs, Solang Valley, and enjoy adventure sports like paragliding, rock climbing and hiking. Best Time To Visit

Undoubtedly winters are the best time to visit, which is between October and March. The temperature drops under zero and the region is clad in snowfall, making it an outstanding experience to enjoy Manali.

Summers are also a good time when the temperature remains between 10 to 25 degrees celsius. Folks like to visit Manali in monsoons too, as the place looks and feels dreamy and mystical during rainfall.

How To Get There

Take your own car if you have experience driving in hilly and rocky terrains, or else hire a taxi with an experienced driver. Only hardcore bikers should take a bike trip to Manali.

Alternatively, take a bus from Delhi to Manali. Private bus operators offer tickets for as low as Rs 1000. Self-hire cars are also available at good discounts online. The shortest distance between two cities is roughly 550 kilometres, reachable in 11 to 12 hours by road.

Route Options

There are three scenic routes you can take. Find them mentioned below.

Route 1: Ambala-Chandigarh Route

Delhi → Panipat → Kurukshetra → Ambala → Chandigarh → Bilaspur → Mandi → Kullu → Manali

Route 2: The Banur-Palampur Route

Delhi → Panipat → Kurukshetra → Ambala → Banur → Palampur → Mandi → Kullu → Manali

This route runs on NH 44 and 205 and takes around 15 to 16 hours. It runs through the same steps mentioned in Route 1 until Chandigarh, bypassing the city via Banur and then changes.

Bhakhra Nangal Dam: Check out this massive dam famous for its incredible engineering and stunning sights. A special permit is needed to visit.
Kangra Fort: On the outskirts of Kangra, check out the ruins of this magnificent ancient fort.

Route 3: The Shimla Route

Delhi → Panipat → Kurukshetra → Ambala → Zirakpur → Shimla → Bilaspur → Mandi → Kullu → Manali

This route also goes through Chandigarh as mentioned in Route 1 and then leads to Manali via Shimla. It takes around 15 hours via NH 44 and NH 5. Take the Zirakpur route instead of passing through Chandigarh. Check out these places to see along the way.

Safety Measures and Tips

Overall, the road conditions are good, barring a few stretches after Bilaspur.
You will find narrow paths, hairpin bends and trucks along the way that will slow you down.
Do not speed once you are off the expressway.
Be careful while driving near intersections and bypasses.
Consult your GPS but also ask the locals in case of route confusion.
Plan an overnight stay at Chandigarh, Ambala, or Shimla. The drive may get too long or arduous.
Make plenty of stops or switch drivers. The drive may cause too much stress for a single driver.
Main city stops will have McDonalds and CCDs as well as good restaurants. Past these, enjoy eating aloo parathas and authentic Himachali food.
Carry snacks and water.

Opt for self-drive only if you have good experience driving in hilly areas, else rent a cab with a good tour and travel company. The road conditions on NH 44 are good but you may find some rough patches after Bilaspur. Speed should be slowed down on hairpin bends, narrow paths, and keep in mind the distance with the trucks along the way. 1: Dont hit beyond the speed limit and slow down once youre off the highway especially on steep turns. 2: Make halts en route or switch drivers or even plan an overnight stay at Chandigarh as the drive can get too long. 3: Follow GPS but in case of confusion, dont hesitate to ask the locals for directions especially while passing any village. 4: Carry your snacks and water or prefer only bottled water from outside and always eat at a clean restaurant. 5: After any stopover, do wash your hands properly if possible or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer before getting into the car. 6: Choose a 100% hygienic hotel with vaccinated staff for a safe and comfortable stay. 7: Most importantly, follow all the COVID-19-related guidelines and protocols issued by WHO to stay safe. Keep these things in mind before you hit the highway for the most memorable trip.

Manali to Leh road trip is the most spectacular road trip in the world! Whether you are doing Manali to Leh bike trip or doing a Manali to Leh Ladakh – as it is popularly called – road trip by car, we bet that this will be a journey of your life time! We share our experiences travelling from Manali to Leh by car. We did this in 2010 and it was a journey of our lifetime.

We did another trip on this road in June 2016. This time around we ran on the same highway in Great Himalayan Running Festival aptly known as “Hell Race”.

“It’s breathtakingly beautiful” – we tell our friends as soon as we reach Leh after the spectacular journey of 473 Kms on the Manali Leh road. The road clings and wriggle through some of the most stunning terrain in the world crossing five high altitude passes, fords, streams and waterfalls tumbling from mountains!

We start our journey from Manali to Leh on a cold rainy morning with overcast sky. We are ordered (!) by our Driver Sumit Singh on the previous day to be ready at 6 AM to leave Manali. The wisdom of driving in Himalayas is “Leave early and Reach early” as you can not trust the fickle mountain weather as day pass by.

Being our first trip in the Himalayas, ascent upwards unfolded a lot of surprises – the omnipresent apple trees with “red juicy” apples, the streams gently flowing down mountains creating numerous waterfalls, the green carpet of cedar trees in the valley, the clouds which seem to caress the mountain peaks was a “visual” poetry which can be best seen than written.

The road from Manali to Rohtang is an ascent and is surrounded by beautiful valleys. Let the pictures tell the tale.

Our car slowly climb towards the snow-capped Rohtang Pass only to wait behind a “Kilometre long” pile up of cars due to a “mudslide”. We have a long journey ahead as the plan was to stay overnight at Sarchu – at 14,000 feet – which is approximately 220 KMs from Rohtang.

Employees from Border Road Organisation clear the “mud slide” and when our car cleared this hurdle, we have lost about 2 hours of precious time. (BTW, the road from Manali to Rohtang has been done up beautifully and gone are the days of such mud slides. It was a pleasure to drive on it last year when we were there for “Hell race”)

We have breakfast at Marhi and continue our journey towards Sarchu. We don’t stop at Rohtang, the place where the day trippers from Manali – majority of them newly weds – gather to play in snow. Some glimpses of Rohtang landscape.

The scenery gets better and better….

The journey beyond Rohtang is suddenly silent. The only noise we could hear is the air rushing against the mountain or the tip – tap of the melting snow. Or the screech of the car tyre on the road. Or sometimes when a “Bullet rider” overtook us with that “Thumping” sound.

The Manali Leh road is either “cemented” or “patch of mud” . Very soon the green valleys and mountains are replaced by shades of brown with snow peaks in the background. Driving along the Bhaga River and listening to its different notes take us into a different world. We could see many water falls in the mountains with water trickling away under the sheets of snow. Valleys capped with snow. Rocky mountains painted green by wild grass and flowers…..

From now onwards, we are treated to a spectacle of nature – Mountains, greenery, streams, waterfalls…….

This was stunning! A huge ice cap on the mountain melts and creates a beautiful, gentle waterfalls!

We cross Thandi and Jispa – last villages on Manali let road – and begin our ascent again towards Baralacha la which is at about 16500 ft. The journey is an absolute delight. We stopover at beautiful and pristine Suraj tal lake.

The winding snow-capped roads , the low hung clouds with sun breaking in between and creating a beautiful rainbow, we could not just take our eyes off the road. We wished we had a 360 degree vision. Barlacha la was white sheet spread out in every direction and made us sway between dream and reality!

Sarchu is where we find tents pitched in the pristine valley of the mighty mountains. It is cold and windy out here. But it is an experience we would never forget!

Travel tips.

Getting there

The journey on the Manali Leh road starts at Manali. Hence make Manali as a base.

a) There are overnight buses from Delhi to Manali. One can book the luxury Volvo buses run by Himachal Pradesh Transport Corporation from Delhi to Manali.

The nearest railway station is Chandigarh. If you are coming by train, then the convenient station will be Chandigarh. Unless, you want to visit Chandigarh, we would recommend you to take the bus as mentioned above.

The nearest airport is at Kullu which is around 40 KMs from Manali. The flights to Kullu from Delhi are notorious for cancellation/delay due to weather condition in Kullu. Keep this in mind while booking your plane tickets.

Stay Options

There are many options to suit all budgets in Manali. We stayed in Johnson Hotel which is one of the oldest in Manali and regarded as an institution. Huge and excellent rooms with a laid back atmosphere. The continental restaurant in the hotel is one of the best in Manali.

Other information

The Manali Leh road trip is not for faint hearted. You really need to rough it out on the treacherous roads. So be prepared mentally and physically!! (Latest update – The roads on this drive has been done and is excellent except for few places)
Remember that you will be driving from a height of 6000 ft in Manali to close to 18000 in Tanglang La. Acclimatisation is the key. Else, AMS – Acute Mountain Sickness – is likely to hit you at these heights. Most of the cases will be mild and result in nausea, headaches, sleeplessness http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000133.htm
The trip on Manali Leh road can be done in two days with stop over at Jispa.
Driving in hills takes more time and speeds are drastically reduced as road condition is not good. Always have buffer time to allow delays due to landslides and flooding of roads. Land slides are particularly common between Manali and Jispa. If you are driving yourself, drive safe. Don’t hurry.
Fill up fuel in Manali and carry supplies in Jerry cans. There is only one petrol bunk in Thandi and if it runs out of stock you will curse yourself. Diesel may be available in “black” at exorbitant cost but getting petrol will be difficult.
Follow the golden rule of hill driving. Start early and reach early!
Carry enough memory cards for your pictures. There is so much to click that you will regret if you haven’t had these chips.
Eat less and don’t overfill yourself while driving in hills. Drink lot of water.
Carry a good medicine kit. Talk to your family doctor and take necessary medicines.
Do not exert and run around in high altitude. Oxygen content in atmosphere is 30 – 40 percent lesser in these areas and will make you tired and sick. Do not stay for more than 10 minutes in passes above 15000 ft
Carry a good Binocular.
Pack your long johns and woollens. If you have a sleeping bag, carry it.
Ensure that you have the complete vehicle accessories and kit. If self driving, practice trouble shooting techniques and become confident. Carry a good map of the area.
Dal/Rajma – Chawal , Maggi and Omelettes are staple food you get in dhabhas on the way. Don’t expect anything more!
If possible try and plan your drive during full moon day period. You will possibly see the brightest moon ever in these rarefied and unpolluted areas at night.
Do not rely too much on your cell phone. It may not work most of the time.
Do not sleep on the journey. You will regret having missed on some of the outstanding scenery in the world.
Lastly, if you get stuck up anywhere and find an army camp close by, go in and take their help. These great guys will never say NO. Poorna can vouch for it having served in Indian Army!!
We would recommend that spending one day in Manali will help in seeing some nice places around and also prepares you for the long journey. The transport for the drive can be hired in Manali. The transport charges are generally expensive and it will be good to have at least four people travel in the taxi to reduce the cost burden.

Online Permit System for Beyond Rohtang is not yet operational
Permits have to obtained manually during office hours (on office working days) at Manali only
We have no idea what will be the new rules when the Online Permit system resumes (if at all)

Manali Leh road trip is one of the beautiful one can think of. Travel to Ladakh can not be complete if you do not experience this journey. You cross five passes of different heights, you go through snow, streams and precariously narrow stretches at places. The landscape changes every few KMs. It is a photographer’s paradise indeed.

Important update on road condition, we travelled on the manali to leh road in june 2016 while participating in great himalayan running festival or “the hell race” as it is called ., the road conditions on manali leh road have improved drastically. the rohtang loops are lovely tarmac today and there is no mudslides anymore. except for few kilometres between rohtang top and koksar and again from sarchu to pang the road condition is good., in fact, one need not have to stay in sarchu and drive straight from jispa to leh which will help avoid ams. you will also find dhabhas at many places on way like zing zing bar, after nakkee la, pang, moreh plains. one can also stay in these dhabhas in emergencies..

The transport cost was around 15K for two days. It is worth it. In fact transport costs in Ladakh is very high as terrain is tough.

Thanks. If you are only travelling to Manali, then i would suggest you to go when road to Rohtang pass open which will be in May which gives you a chance to see snow. I would also suggest you to keep a day to go beyond Rohtang and stay for a night at Sissu

From thrilling rafting expeditions to offbeat trails in nomadic and remote villages, the stunning land of high passes offers a profusion of exciting activities for the devil-hearted.

Road tripping from Manali to Leh

This route takes you through some incredible points like the famous Rohtang Pass, one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. The route after Rohtang Pass takes you through some of the highest motorable roads in the world. Once you reach the Lachulungla Pass, you get spectacular views of the Ladakh Plateau – India’s highest plateau. Important stopovers on this route include Keylong, Jispa, Darcha, Baralacha La, Sarchu, and Upshi. Begin the journey of a lifetime from Manali. Grab a wholesome breakfast at one of the many cafes in Manali. The first point on this route is Madi, following which you will reach the popular Rohtang Pass. It usually takes riders two hours to make it to Rohtang Pass. Spend some time soaking in the unparalleled picturesque beauty of Rohtang. Take a dozen selfies with your mains.

If you are travelling during peak seasons, chances of meeting fellow bike riders are also high. Befriend them and hit the road again. Your next pitstop could be Keylong, which lies just a little before Jispa. Now, you may choose to spend the rest of the day and night at Keylong or reach Jispa for your overnight stay. Keylong is also where you should check your bike and get it repaired if need be. You won’t find any other repair shops before Leh. After resting for the night at Jispa, start early for Leh. This is where the Manali to Leh route gets amazing as well as challenging. This route will take you through the otherworldy landscapes of Baralacha La Pass, Tanglangla, Moore Planes, and Upshi.

When you reach Baralacha La, you would see the quaint hilly hamlet of Bharatpur. You can stop for lunch at Khoksar in Darcha, which has plenty of eateries and dhabas on both sides of the check post.

Follow the quirky signboards and head towards the Himachal Pradesh -Jammu and Kashmir border, which is located at Sarchu. Here, you can stay in tented camps as there’s no dearth of good camping facilities. You’ll also find a police check post and a liquor shop in Sarchu.

The other prominent places you’ll ride through on your way to Leh are Gata Loops, Nakee La, Lachung La, Pang, Taglang La, Upshi, and Karu. Just FYI, the last petrol station on the Jispa-Leh route is at Tandi, after which you’ll only come across a fuel station near Upshi and Karu.

If you are feeling uneasy because of the high altitude, make sure to stop at Pang, where there’s an army camp that serves free oxygen. Note that you’ll only get access to your mobile network in Keylong, Jispa, and then Upshi.

If you wish to stop over for a stay before reaching Leh, Pang, Rumtse village, Upshi and Karu have decent guesthouses, homestays , and tented accommodations. There’s no dearth of comfortable accommodation in Darcha, Sissu, Gondhla, Keylong, and Gemur either.

DETAILS OF THE ROUTE

The highway spans a total of 474 km beginning from Manali and opens up on the first day of June and shuts down on the 15 th of September. Technically, the highway remains motorable till October's end. Starting from Manali's forests (Devdar), you pass through Mahri's numerous Dhabas, all while witnessing the beautiful valley. Further along, comes the Rohtang Pass, standing at an enormous 3978 metres. Weather in the region keeps fluctuating and therefore, travellers are advised to be prepared for extremities.

Landslides are very common and the descend into Lahaul is quite dangerous. Post this, the town of Khoksar comes, where entries are registered and foreigners' passports are checked. The Dhabas here are good and therefore, it is a famous stop for drivers. A famous night stop which comes afterwards is Keylong, a huge town in the region. The place is synonymous with Buddhism, which is apparent in the feel and vibe of the place. A fairly-good alternative to Keylong is the village of Gemur/Jispa (25 kilometres after Keylong).

Acclimatization is important to avoid AMS or Acute Mountain Sickness. Heading towards Zanskar, there is divergence at Darcha. Baralacha La aka “The Gateway to Ladakh, Spiti, Lahaul and Zanskar” is a famous spot. From here, you can visit all four regions after a day's walk. The descent from Baralacha La makes the town of Bharatpur temporarily visible. The road continues approaching Himachal and J&K's borders at Sarchu, where there is a police checkpoint, as well as a wine shop, is located.

Once you enter Jammu & Kashmir, you witness two extremely photogenic valleys. The highway continues to Nakee La which stands tall and high at 4915m. Further ahead is the Lachung La pass, standing at 5035 metres. The descent towards Pang is spectacular as well, especially the last 5 km. Finally comes the highest point of the trip – The Taglang La (5359m). The view from here is tremendously breathtaking. Post Rumtse village, the road starts travelling down the famous Indus Valley, passing Upshi and Karu villages. Finally, the entrance gate stating “Jullay, Welcome to Ladakh” arrives.

The Leh Manali Highway is one of the most picturesque and talked about highways that connect Leh in Ladakh , to Manali in Himachal Pradesh. Furthermore, it connects Manali - Solang Valley to Lahaul and Spiti Valleys in Himachal to Zanskar Valley in Ladakh. Flanked by high Himalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges, the route is open only for less than five months in a year and is trodden upon by enthused motorcyclists.

The Rohtang Pass Tunnel, also known as the Atal Tunnel, was opened on the 3rd of October 2020 and has reduced the length of the Leh-Manali Highway from 470 km to 430km. This reduces the travel time over the highway by over 3.5 hours and the entire journey can be completed in under 14 hours.

Leh Manali Highway- An Adventurous Route

The general route that the Leh-Manali highway follows is as follows:

Gata Loops are famous for the 21 hairpin bends that push you from 4190m to 4630m via a 7 km stretch. From there you continue your ascent towards Nakee La , situated at an altitude of 4740m. There are no facilities or habitats in this area. Next stop from Nakee la is Lachulung la . You will now enter the second highest pass on the highway, sitting at an altitude of 5079m. Breathlessness, headaches, nausea, and uneasiness are common symptoms. Acclimatization to higher altitudes takes time. Avoid any exertion that might affect your breathing process. A downward drive from Lachulung pass takes you to Pang (4600m). From here, you’ll encounter plains till Debring (4835m). They are called the Moore plains

Day 3: Debring – Tanglang La – Rumste – Upshi – Karu – Leh

Debring to Taglang is a steep ascent, covering 14.2 km. Taglang pass is the highest point on the highway, situated at an altitude of 5328m. Avoid stopping here for any more than 10-15 mins; high altitude can make you feel nauseous. From here, you begin your last and final descent towards Leh which is located at an altitude of 3500 m. You will pass Rumste and Upshi on your way and reach Leh, covering 108.1 km. By the time you reach Leh, you’ll be acclimatized to higher altitudes and will find Leh very pleasing.

Travel Time on Manali Leh Highway

If you want to finish the journey in one day , consider factors like acclimatization, motion sickness, exhaustion (you’ll be on the road for a minimum of 16 hours), accidents like puncture or engine breakdown, and most importantly, the joy of missing out on some beautiful views. The chances of succumbing to ACM run high. Since you’ll be traveling through different altitudes without many breaks, it will eventually take a toll on your body.
The two-day journey is the most preferred by routine as well as first-time travelers. This gives you enough time for acclimatization and unplanned stopovers. You can start from Manali, early in the morning, on day 1. Spend the night at either Keylong, Jispa, or Saracho. Technically, Sarchu is the middle point between Manali and Leh, but its high altitude is not suitable for everyone. Compared to it, Keylong and Jispa are much better. Start your second day early to arrive at Leh by evening.
The three-day trip is the least preferred option due to time and cost. Two layovers will cost you extra money and time. From the experience point of view, it is more appealing as you can enjoy more places without rushing. You can begin your journey from Manali and reach Kelong/Jispa by evening.

Where to Stay on the Leh Manali Highway?

Road Conditions

Conditions are subject to weather and season. Although the majority of the sections are safe and well-patched, there are some bumpy sections you have to look out for.

Smooth: Sissu to Keylong, Keylong to Jispa, Jispa to Zingzingnar, Zingzingbar to Baralacha pass, Moore Plains to Tanglang La pass, Tanglang pass to Rumste, Rumste to Leh. Roads to look out for: Rohtang to Kokhsar, Baralacha pass to Sarchu, Sarchu to Pang, Pang to Moore Plains. Average: Manali to Rohtang pass, Kokhsar to Sissu.

Best Time to Travel on the Leh-Manali Highway

Rohtang Pass and Baralacha Pass are open by May end. You can plan your trip from June onwards. You can see the stacks of snow from the previous winter season, and that’s why tourists most prefer this time of the year. By the time July hits, the snow starts to melt, and it becomes difficult to navigate through the freshwater passages. July onwards chances of rainfall are high. Although areas north of Keylong rarely see any rain, if you want to avoid any clashes, hit the highway in the August-September slot. September is the last month for a safe visit.

Important Tips For The Leh-Manali Highway Journey

Don't be overconfident or overexcited during your trip as it is your biggest enemy.
Before you all set to travel make sure you are physically and mentally fit and ready to face the challenges during the trip.
Make sure you have your first-aid kit and all essential medicines with you.
Make sure you have all the toiletries like toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, and sunscreen
Carry an extra pair of warm shoes; don't wear sandals and slippers during your journey as it is freezing out there.
Carry warm clothes, thermal liners, rain clothes and rain covers for your bags as be ready to experience bone-chilling cold.
Be sure that you have enough amount of high energy food in stock, carry glucose, chocolates, and other energy food.

Shimla to Manali Road Trip – one of the most scenic in India

A Shimla to Manali road trip is one of the most picturesque ones that we have taken in our life. The distance between Shimla and Manali is about 250 kms. And, theShimla to Manali road trip winds through the mighly Himalayas. So, it takes 7-8 hours to reach Manali from Shimla covering this distance. Which including stops for breakfast and lunch. However, every bit of theShimla to Manali road trip is very scenic and beautiful, with the majestic mountains on one side and the lush green , deep valley at the other side of the road. But, one should start as early in the morning as possible. So that one can spend more time on the way to Manali and still reach there before dark.

Our Shimla Manali drive

I have been lucky enough to already been on Shimla to Manali road trip twice. The first time was long back with my parents. When I was a kid. But the memories are still quiet vivid. So, this time around, there was no question or confusion on a Shimla to Manali road trip. I knew we were going to take theShimla to Manali road trip and drive during the day. So that we could enjoy it thoroughly. I also planned to start early so that we could have ample time with our kid to cover the distance without any haste.

PS: We booked Shimla to Manali cab. In fact the cab was with us all through our Shimla Manali Trip . But, one can also do the Shimla to Manali road trip by booking a Shimla to Manali Bus. While Kalka-Shimla toy train provides for an ejoyable journey to Shimla via train, unfortunately there is no train connectivity to Manali.

Early morning start for Shimla Manali highway

We woke up early in the morning. And, we decided to skip breakfast at our homestay in Shimla in lieu of time. However, the homestay owner knew of our plans. Thus, he had arranged for an early morning breakfast, ensuring his guests don’t leave without having food. Soon, we packed our bags, and got ready to leave.

Out of Shimla, on the highway

Since we started very early. Therefore, we left Shimla and hit the Shimla Manali highway in no time. After traveling 78 KM you reach Beri junction, before Bilaspur. At this junction the roads from Chandigarh, Delhi and Kalka side join the Shimla Manali road. We stopped here for a while since our little one needed little rest. We parked our cars on the road side and stepped out. Fresh air and lush green mountains and valleys greeted us. We all strolled a little here and there on the road side before continuing further.

From here, after sometime, we hit Sundarnagar. There is a dam here. 25km from here comes Mandi. It all gets better at this point, ~145km from Shimla. The road starts running besides river Beas and then continues hand-in-hand with the river for the rest of the journey all the way till Manali. The torquish water and gush of the river amidst the trees and the smooth rocks on the river bed produce a scene beautiful enough to inspire any artist and excite any traveller :). It provides perfect photographic backdrop for snaps, all through the way.

Once the drive along the river bank starts, the whole route is dotted with eateries. We stopped at a local dhaba (Indian Eatery) and had hot chapatis and delicious Indian curries sitting along the bank of the river. There are not many fancy restaurants, but these small roadside dhabas are a must try for the taste of authentic North Indian food. One must stop for lunch at one of these roadside dhabas en-route to Manali.

Around 50km before Manali comes the town of Kullu. Here, there’s a beautiful bridge across the river which leads to the town, it looks like a painting done by the almighty himself. The highway runs on one side of the bridge, while on the other side, the beautiful small houses all along the opposite bank of the river present a scene that looks just out of the fairy tale. As the road starts approaching Kullu, one can start seeing many small hotels and camps alongside the river. In fact, this is a perfect location for camping in Manali . The camps are also organised by hotels and resorts. present a nice option to stay besides the river and enjoy the scenery. Many of them also arrange for river rafting, fishing, trying kayaks and other adventure and sports activities. There are numerous river side hotels as well lining the bank.

From Kullu to Manali the river flows almost at the same level as the road, just besides it. On one side there are the hills and farms and on the other side the riverbed and the beautiful stream flowing till the town of Manali. Almost 10-15km before reaching Manali, the road passes through the nearby villages, with green fields on either side of the road and a few village houses popping up now and then.

This drive for us was more like a leisurely walk. We stopped at lots of places, for tea, coffee, lunch and at times simply to take a few moments and appreciate the natural beauty in front of us. In the town of Kullu there is a Government garment store right on the highway, which houses some fine woolen shawls, carpets, sweaters, pullovers, caps and other garments made by the locals. The ground floor has the spinning and manufacturing machines and first floor has the shop. And, it is right besides the highway. We stopped here for some nice half an hour and did pick some sovereigns and some shawls.

At snow peak retreat Manali

Finally from here, we headed straight to Manali. Once in Manali town, we asked the directions for our resort snow peak retreat and we headed staight to the resort. As we arrived at the resort, it was almost sunset time. The resort is located just near the Hidimba Devi Temple . The final stretch of a few hundred meters to the resort were narrow and steep. However, it was all worth it because of the scene that we were greeted with as soon as we reached the resort. Just in front of the resort, the mountain peaks were covered with snow and the whole scene was very beautiful.

Overall, it was a drive of almost 9 hours for us, but we didn’t feel a bit tired when we reached our destination, Snow Peak Retreat, Manali . When we were driving along the bank of the river, almost at the same level with the river bed, it felt so awesome, we wished the journey would never come to an end :). The Shimla Manali highway condition is very good. And you can easily do the trip via a cab or a bus. You can self drive as well, if you are confident enough to drive for long hours on the winding Himalayan route.

Note : The Shimla to Manali road remains open throughout the year and serves as main connection to Manali town from different parts of India. It is not affected by the snowfall in winter. In fact, it becomes all the more scenic at this point of the year. And we must say, although we have taken many other beautiful highway drives and road trips in India , including the Cochin to Munnar road trip , and the Bangalore to Kodaikanal road trip but this one remains as our favorite so far.

Tips for your journey on this road

Start as early from Shimla as possible so that you get a lead on the way and don’t get stuck on the mountain road post dark.
You can have breakfast in your hotel or on the way.
There are numerous food outlets on the way, and the roadside one have very delicious north Indian cuisines.
But, carry drinking water with you in case you need it all of a sudden
Wear enough woolen, the temperature will be mostly low
Make space for ample breaks during the Shimla to Manali road trip. Since the journey is long, you will not feel tired if you take it slow and take breaks in between
The route has directions at all the major turnings, so there won’t be any problem. GPS also works all through the route.
If you are driving on your own, better two or three people split the driving between them as the route is long.
The road is open all through the year, so you can plan the journey anytime.
In extreme winter months, it snows in Manali . Do check the weather predictions to avoid getting stuck on the way near Kullu or Manali

HI, Can u suggest me budget accomodation at shimla and manali for family and taxi operator number which u people had experiance. u can suggest the area to book accomodation at both places. Even Home stay also welcome. What about traveling Manali from shimla in night time or better day time?

The rates must have changed since our trip almost 7 years back. But these were both mid-budget accommodations. I would not prefer night travel between Shimla and Manali as its hilly terrain with no light provisions. And its beautiful, so day trip is enjoyable. We will be traveling from Bhuntar to Mashobra and from Mashobra to Manali. I note from your article that you suggest one leaves early in the morning. However, on the onward journey to Mashobra from Bhuntar we will not be able to start our journey before 11 am and the return journey from Mashobra to Manali before 2 pm. Would be great if you could highlight any issues that you feel we might encounter with this schedule and any tips that we should keep in mind on our journey. It may be noted that we will not be driving ourselves and both sides the journey will be in a local taxi.

Hi Ashwin. The distance in kilometers is not much from Shimla to Manali. And the Kullu Shima road is a 2 way road, however , kullu to Manali is narrower. Traffic is also not much on this route in border seasons. But, as it is hilly terrain with several sharp bends and turns and you won’t have the usual roadside lamps or street lights to guide you beyond dark, it will be a dangerous ride, even if a local driver is driving. That’s why it is preferable to aim to reach Manali before dark. Also, again, pertaining to the altitude and the cold and cloudy climate, it will get dark as early as 5pm in winter months and max by 6pm otherwise. So, I will still suggest, start early, or stay somewhere midway and continue your journey to Manali the next day. Have a wonderful trip!

we are travelling to Shimla/Manali in Dec this year. Need to know what are the places we can visit enroute Manali from Shimla considering we leave Shimla as early as possible in the morning..

Can we cover Naggar castle or Manikaran? We will be travelling back from Manali to Chandigarh after stay of 3 nights in Manali so want to cover few places enroute Manali from Shimla and few enroute Chandigarh from Manali.

Also want to know about the river rafting. we have do it while going to Manali or enroute Chandigarh?

Thanks Mahesh. There are two routes to Manali from Shimla. One of them has Naggar Castle on the way and if you decide to take that route, you can stop there. There is a restaurant also inside the castle campus it seems. However, start really early, like by 6:00am in the morning. Also, both rafting and Naggar Castle you wont be able to cover en route to Manali as both will consume time. So, you can do Rafting on the day you return from Manali, or, while you are in Manali. The river is right there and you can go down specifically for Rafting on one of the days, that way it won’t be very hectic.
