Top 5 South Tour Mauritius Attractions

Mauritius South Island Sightseeing Tour

Mauritius is an ultimate tourist attraction island with plenty to see and enjoy. You have options on choosing sea excursions, cultural sightseeing, nature, extreme adventures and so much more. Putting myself in your shoes can be overwhelming with all these possibilities. So today, we will narrow down to south island tour attractions, to make your selection much more straightforward.

The most beautiful and wildest landscapes of Mauritius Island lie in the South: mountainous terrains that offer magnificent panoramas and sandy beaches bordered by rocky shores, cliffs as well as beautiful greenery as far as your eyes can see. The Southern part of the Island is perhaps the most interesting for adventurers visiting Mauritius. The Wild South West Coast of Mauritius have places that have their pristine state. The adventures and visits to these spots bring you very close to nature. For example, the trail from Soufleur to Benares is full of natural beauties, from the rare sight of dolphins to the waves crushing the boulders and cliffs.

You get a similar feeling when you venture the track of Gris Gris with gigantic waves finishing their course on the rocks and crevices formed by the action of the waves themselves. You also discover the hidden waterfalls and pools that will freshen your day no matter how scorch the sunshine is. The adventure of Vallee des Couleurs pours adrenaline into your blood like no other adventure on the island.

Wild South, or ‘Sud Sauvage’ as many calls it, has other treasures like the dormant volcano, Pont Naturel, Rochester waterfalls and the natural seven-coloured earth. The Ebony forest adds to the taste of adventure seekers with the breath-taking view from the top of Chamarel.

In short, you can enjoy the sound of the waves crashing the cliffs, refreshing waterfalls, and birds chirping in one visit. The best part is that even when you leave Mauritius, the memories of the multi-coloured earth or the breeze at the Pont Naturel continue to flourish in your mind, even being very far physically from the scenery. The experience is once in a lifetime to cherish!

1. Chamarel

Chamarel is a lovely village in Mauritius in the Rivière Noire District. The town is primarily known for its scenic attractions. Some of the most popular attractions here include the Chamarel Waterfall, Chamarel Seven Colored Earth, The Rhumerie de Chamarel, Chamarel Curious Corner and the Ebony Forest.

The Chamarel Waterfall

The Chamarel Waterfall, which is the highest waterfall in Mauritius, will offer a scenic view of the waterfall cascading down against the picturesque backdrop of green mountains and forests.

Chamarel Rum – The Rhumerie de Chamarel

Rhumerie de Chamarel is located in the Southwest part of Mauritius right in the heart of a fertile valley. Vast plantations of sugarcane and pineapple growing side by side surround the distillery. It has a unique sense of authenticity and warmth, welcoming visitors for a tour experience ranging from a guided walk through the distillery and rum tasting. You also get to taste delicious meals at the L’Alchimiste and restaurant as you marvel at the unique distiller’s design which harmoniously blends with nature.

Chamarel Seven Colored Earth

The seven coloured earth is a significant tourist attraction and a geological curiosity in Mauritius. The area is a relatively small area –about 7500 m2 – featuring a strikingly bare landscape situated within a dense, vast forest. The earth surface here is particularly unusual and fascinating. It was created by volcanic rocks which cooled at varying temperatures, resulting in beautiful colour patterns on the exposed hillsides. The stones were fine-grained into sands with different shades of brown, grey, red and purple. As the earth was exposed, rains carved patterns of numerous beautiful colours into the hillside. A visit to this park also allows you to walk along trails and between many dunes to explore this unique site.

Chamarel Curious Corner

Just close to the Seven Coloured Earth entrance is the Curious Corner which is a house filled with a wide range of bewildering delusional fantasies and adventures you can enjoy with friends. Below are more details about The Curious Corner of Chamarel.

a) Mirror Maze

Mirror maze provides an exciting venture for the mind and body. It is a consolidation of finite reflections, striking light effects and secret corridors that continually challenge your mind. How? It surrounds you with 200 mirrors and leaves you with the daunting task of figuring out your way out of the enigmatic setting. The intricate entanglement results from a combination of convex and concave mirrors that effectively tilt your sense of orientation thus arousing your curiosity.

b) Upside down room

This room allows you to turn your world upside down effectively defying the theory of gravity. Imagine how thrilling it would be to live in an upside-down space? Have a look at your living room, kitchen, and dining room and figure how everything would appear if you were to flip them vertically, that is the ceiling switches position with the floor and vice versa. The preceding is, precisely, what you get here.

c) The Ames Room

Do you fancy taking captivating pictures? The spot is ideal for you. It allows you to choose between appearing minute and having a gigantic look. The person who stands on the left corner of the space will appear tiny while the one who stands at the one to the right of the room gets a massive appearance. Seeing is believing. So, visit the place and do it practically.

Chamarel Ebony Forest

A visit at the Ebony Forest will allow you to explore a forest reserve and discover the few native animal and plant species remaining on the Island.

2. Black River Gorges National Park

The Black River Gorges Nature Park is on the hilly south-western part of Mauritius. The park covers an area of about 67km² including the humid upland, marshy heath land and drier lowland forest. Some of the facilities for tourists here include picnic areas, information centres and up to 50 kilometres of trails.

A guided tour will drive you through the Park where you will see various endangered species of animals and plants. There is an excellent viewpoint along the way at the Alexandra Waterfalls. The Black River Gorges Waterfall also offers a view of beautiful western Mauritius.

3. Alexandra Falls

The Iconic Alexandra Falls is located about 700 meters above sea level in the Black River Gorges National Park. The lush green of the region, the rich, diverse flora and fauna and the stunning landscape make it a great way of connecting with nature. You can access the waterfalls through the Grand Bassin, where you will find the Alexandra Falls Viewpoint signpost and plenty of parking. Once there, you will appreciate the spectacular waterfalls as they cascade over the rocky outcrops. You also get to enjoy a tranquil moment surrounded by a virgin green valley, home to some endemic flora and Evian species.

4. Grand Bassin

Aerial View of Grand Bassin with Mangal Mahadev statue

Grand Bassin is a lake located about 6km Southeast of Mare aux Vacoas, in the Savanne District, in the inner parts of Mauritius. The lake is about 550m above sea level. Grand Bassin together with its Hindu temple is considered a holy lake to Hindu Mauritians. The lake is in the crater of a passive volcano. There is a myth that the waters inside this lake communicate with the holy Ganges waters in India. For this reason, the Mauritian Hindus declared this lake as holy lake. The Grand Bassin is a pilgrim place and every year Hindus flock to this place to honour Lord Shiva. There is a colossal statue of Lord Shiva known as ‘Mangal Mahadev’ just at the entrance of the lake when arriving from the North of the island.

We’ve also sampled a few of the top Southern Mauritius attractions, but as you can see, this Island has much more to offer. Whether you want to interact with nature on a nature trail, enjoy waterfalls or marvel at magnificent earth formations, this side of the Island has got you covered.

5. Floreal & Adamas

Floreal is a little city in Mauritius famous for its posh vibes. The town features everything you may ask for whether it is history, character, enjoyment, eccentric products, or experience. Floreal Square is the city’s major tourist attraction, where you will find all kinds of boutiques and brands for shopping at a reasonable price. There is also a chain of eateries for you to indulge in delicious comfort food. Aside from this, the vital infrastructure, hospitality and quality horse-racing occasions in Club Hippique de Maurice will add value for your vacation experience.

Adamas is the most famous diamond showroom in Mauritius. The latter has been a part of the city of Floreal and Curepipe since the 70s. The town swears by the authenticity of the showroom, and you’ll be able to find different varieties of diamond all in 1 location, be it associated with the colours, unique designs, a degree of purity, or reduce silhouette of the diamonds. The showroom also offers custom made collectible jewellery if you would like something unique. Even if you are not in the shopping mode, visiting Adamas as part of your trip and witnessing the fantastic skills of Mauritian artisans will be a lavish experience.

Tour Description

You will be treated to a special trip by your guide, who is also a fully licensed and professional driver with thorough knowledge of each of the places you will go. There are seven featured highlights during your tour: Trou aux Cerfs volcano, Grand Bassin, Black River Gorges, Alexandra Waterfall, Chamarel Village & Waterfall, Chamarel Seven Coloured Earth, The Rhumerie de Chamarel, and The Curious Corner of Chamarel.

The South Tour is a full-day activity , lasting approximately 8 hours. This tour is completely private. While the above stops are suggested to give you a well-rounded approach to Mauritian southern culture, they by no means encompass every possibility for the tour. You have the final say in deciding where you would like to stop and the duration of your stay. You may even design your own southern tour from the ground up; your driver guide will always be on standby for you.

Grand Bassin , also called Ganga Talao, is a crater lake and features numerous statues and sacred temples that perform daily worship ceremonies, and several annual religious festivals that draw pilgrims from around the island (and world) to this holy spot. The lake is also home to towering trees and friendly wildlife.

Black River Gorges National Park covers roughly two percent of the island’s surface. Many protected species of plants and animals thrive within its steep slopes and shadowed valleys. The park contains a handful of peaceful walking trails. In its southern section lies Alexandra Falls; this breathtaking waterfall sits perched at the apex of a winding scenic road.

To the park’s southwest sits the village of Chamarel . Here, you’ll get a feel for Mauritian culture and its relationship to the island’s natural beauty. Explore the village, swim at the nearby waterfall, or enjoy peaceful dining in one of several eateries. You can witness the rum-making process at the nearby Chamarel Rhumerie, with a sampling of local rums and a fine restaurant available.

The Chamarel Seven Coloured Earth is a 650-million-year-old geological oddity that displays its multihued sands in brilliant contrast under sunny skies. Reflect on the ancient mysteries that must have taken place under the earth’s surface to produce such a unique sight. You may even purchase a glass vial containing all seven colours of sand to commemorate your visit.

Finally, warp your sense of balance and depth among the multitude of optical illusions and interactive puzzles at The Curious Corner of Chamarel . This popular tourist attraction contains many galleries, each with its own peculiar quirk. You may find new perspectives on gravity and perception by the time you leave this fun and popular spot. Upon the conclusion of your tour, your friendly guide will return you to your accommodation while you reflect on your memories of the day.

What is the pickup time? There is no hard starting time. Since this tour is private, you get to choose your own pickup time. We usually recommend starting between 09:00 and 09:30 to give yourself ample time to complete the track.

What do I need to bring? Sunscreen and other sun protection, camera, water, cash to cover activity entry fees at the different locations.

What languages do the driver/guides speak? English, French, Hindi, and other languages upon request.

Reviews can only be left by Mauritiusly customers after they have completed the south tour.

Absolutely loved the views at Black River Park! Nowhere else on the island did I feel so above it all...literally had my head in the clouds! Alexandra, Chamarel Seven Coloured Earths, Chamarel waterfall...this day is all about getting out to explore the sights on this corner of the island. I’d go again in a heartbeat. Thanks to our driver for navigating the roads safely!

Nice variety of nature, dining, and sightseeing some oddities. Our guide told us that the weather in this part of the island can be very dynamic, so I suggest bringing both sunscreen and a rain poncho or sweater. Still, it’s worth it for all you’ll see and learn. My favorite parts were the rum tasting at The Rhumerie in Chamarel and the mind-bending mirrors at Curious Corner.

This tour is a must. If you leave Mauritius without discovering what is on offer here, you’ll do yourself a disservice. From Grand Bassin lake to the streets of Chamarel to the curiosity of Seven Coloured Earth, this tour has something for everyone.

The Ultimate Mauritius South Island Tour Itinerary

Disclosure: This page contains affiliate links, and at no additional cost to you, we earn a small commission if you click through and make a purchase.

The South Coast of Mauritius is a tropical paradise sprawled with lush greenery and exotic beaches, it’s no wonder so many people flock here each year.

There are so many incredible places to visit and a lot are doable in a day, however, if you want to take your time and spend more time at each destination I’d recommend 2 or 3 days.

I don’t know why but I didn’t expect Mauritius to be so hilly if that’s even a word! As we drove from the North to the south I was so impressed with the mountainous scenery we passed!

I’ve put together a perfect 3-day itinerary for seeing the very best the South of Mauritius has to offer. You’ll get to see all the best places and some hidden gems too!

Let’s get started…

We wanted to visit Mauritius the first 2 weeks of June which is actually winter and temperatures start dropping.

We did our research and found that the north was considerably warmer in June but we really wanted to see Le Morne so decided to compromise and do half up north and half down south.

Which is highly recommended as Mauritius is one stunning island and the north is quite different from the south see my post here. We stayed at the stunning St Regis on me Morne beach.

It was one of the hotels I had on my bucket list! I just had to stay there and it didn’t disappoint, read my review here .

How to see the South of the Island

With having two young children with us we wanted some days by the pool and beach than other days out exploring so for us the best option to see as much of the south as possible was by hiring a driver.

It wasn’t much more money (£100 full-day tour) then hiring a car with sat nav and child car seats and the driver would know the roads and how to get everywhere quickly. Definitely the best option for us. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous then I’d say get a car and go explore at a more relaxed pace.

mauritius south island tour itinerary

We always use google maps to plot out our itinerary so we can see how far everything is from each other and how long we want to stay at each place them present it to our driver for his opinion and to see if he can add anything to it along the way.

Sometimes they might know some hidden gems or those Instagrammable places you see all the time!

If you’re looking for some non-touristy things to do in Mauritius , you can read all about those hidden gems!

Where did we visit & how much?

We did day 2 days, but I have put together a 3 day itinerary as there’s so much to see!

Here is our itinerary for 3 day in the south of Mauritius: –

Le Morne Hike

  • Le Morne Beach and Kayak
  • Underwater waterfall

Maconde Point

Gris gris beach, le domaine de saint aubin, la vanille nature park.

  • Grand Bassin
  • Alexandra Falls Viewpoint
  • Seven Coloured Earth
  • Swimming with dolphins

Crystal Rock

Île aux benitiers – picnic on the beach.

Here are our recommendations in more detail of what you should see when you visit the South of Mauritius:

Day 1 Mauritius Tour Itinerary

So, for day 1 you could do the Le Morne hike via a guided tour, which will take you into the afternoon. Then once you’ve finished why not cool off at Le Morne beach with a spot of kayaking, snorkeling and sunbathing.

If you wanted to you could hire a boat out and visit the underwater waterfall, you’ll need a good drone like the DJI Phantom 4(View on Amazon) . to get the aerial view though.

Le Morne mountain is an iconic landmark of Mauritius and we certainly wanted to see it when we visited, however, we enjoyed the view from the foot of the mountain. If we didn’t have our baby with us we most definitely would have hiked Le Morne Brabant.

mauritius south island tour itinerary - le morne hike

The mountain has 360 views of the forests, mountains, beaches and not to forget Mauritius underwater waterfall! Yes, you read that right!

The hike will take around 4 hours and is a moderate hike, starting off easy with well-marked paths but gradually getting more difficult near the top. The best time to start the hike is early morning before it gets too hot.

The hike itself is completely free but a tour guide might be a good idea if you’re not an experienced hiker. The cost of a tour guide will be around £35.

Le Morne Beach & Kayak

What can I say, Le Morne beach is absolutely breathtaking! The white sandy beach stretches on for miles, with soft turquoise waters and palm trees lining the beach, it’s the most perfect place to spend the day!

mauritius south island tour itinerary - le morne beach

We stayed at the St Regis Le Morne which is located right on Le Morne beach. I’d highly recommend this hotel, the location is out of this world and service impeccable. Read my review here.

There are a lot of water sports going on at this beach but the most popular one by far was windsurfing due to the good wind conditions. We saw so many people doing this and it looks like so much fun!!

Underwater Waterfall

The underwater waterfall is a spectacular optical illusion that is best seen from a height, either a drone via a boat tour or a helicopter is recommended.

mauritius south island tour itinerary - underwater waterfall

It looks as though water is cascading over the edge into the depths of the ocean, when in fact it’s actually the ocean’s currents pulling the sand from the shore over the shelf’s edge.

Whilst most waters around Manutius reach a maximum depth of 150m the edge at the waterfall falls to depths of thousands of meters to the bottom of the ocean.

A helicopter rider seaplane over is a fantastic way to see the underwater falls in all its glory! A drone is another way to see this natural phenomenon.

Day 2 Mauritius Tour Itinerary

This is an itinerary of what we actually did in a day with our kids. We had a wonderful day and highly recommend everywhere on this list. It looks like a lot of places however a few are just viewpoint stop-offs, so you won’t actually be there long at all!

View the Map

If you’re looking for a great viewpoint in Mauritius this one will impress you. Maconde viewpoint looks out to the crashing waves of the south’s picturesque coastline.

mauritius south island tour itinerary - maconde point

This area is well known for its rugged coastline and natural beauty making the viewpoint very popular with tourists so I’d recommend coming early or during the week.

The viewpoint can be reached by climbing a set of narrow stairs, when we went it was extremely windy and we were told this is very common so be prepared to be blown away (quite literally) by the stunning views at the top!

This beach is simply stunning, with jagged cliffs falling onto the beach it’s a stark contrast to the picturesque white sandy beaches you picture when you think of Mauritius.

mauritius south island tour itinerary - gris gris beach

There are no coral reefs on this part of the island which means the waves crash right into the cliffs creating the most beautiful beach.

The day we saw this beach it was so windy we didn’t get the boys out and my husband jumped out to take some pictures. I’d love to go back on a calmer day to really explore this beach.

There is a small garden area with benches where you can sit and take in all the natural beauty.

This amazing place is overlooked by a 19th-century colonial mansion and is not to be missed, I was fascinated by how beautiful the colonial mansions were in Mauritius. We visited quite a few.

mauritius south island tour itinerary - auberge de saint aubin

Located just outside Souillac the home was built in 1819 from wood from demolished ships, something that is apparent when you walk around.

The mansion is now a restaurant and they also make rum within the grounds as well as a candy factory and greenhouse full of vanilla pods.

Only recently a children’s playground and farm were added to this wonderful place. Such a great place to stop for a bite to eat.

We had the best time here and the boys loved feeding the Aldabra tortoises. 3.5 hectares of lush tropical vegetation surround them and it’s a wonderful experience feeding them.

mauritius south island tour itinerary - la vanille nature park

There are 1000 tortoises here and I think we fed them all!! There are lots of other animals here too, including monkeys, bats, and geckos.

Wait until you see how big the crocodiles are! I was shocked and fascinated at the same time. If you’re interested in insects they have an insectarium with over 23,000 species. It costs around $30 dollars per adult to get in. Completely worth it!

mauritius south island tour itinerary - bois ceri

This is the oldest tea plantation on the island boasting over 250 hectares and they open their doors for visitors to see how the place works. You get to see the tea plants, visit the museum as well as a tea tasting session in the restaurant which has panoramic views of the tea fields. It costs around $10 to get in.

They actually have a bubble lodge on site where you can stay, check them out, they look amazing!

Grand Bassin and Mangal Mahadev

Sat over 550 meters above sea levers this crater lake attracts tourists year upon year. Located in the southwest of the island in Savanne there sits a temple and some other small shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva.

mauritius south island tour itinerary - Grand Bassin and Mangal Mahadev

People Love to come here to pray, meditate or simply take in the beautiful scenery on a walk.

In 2007 a huge statue of the Hindu god Shiva was unveiled and is now the tallest standing statue in Mauritius at 33 meters high. It’s really quite impressive and worth a visit. It’s free to enter but donations can be given.

Alexandra Falls Viewpoint

The next stop on this route is Alexander Falls viewpoint. Here you’ll park up on the road or car park, then cross the road and head towards the viewpoint.

mauritius south island tour itinerary - Alexandra Falls Viewpoint

As you take the paved path towards the viewpoint there are lots of stalls selling a wide range of local goods and crafts.

Once you reach the viewpoint you’ll be greeted with endless views of Black River Gorges National Park a beautiful waterfall streaming from the mountains to your right.

Chamarel Waterfall

Next, you’ll arrive right at Chamarel Waterfall, which is probably one of the most visited and Instagrammable attractions in Mauritius , and with good reason!

mauritius south island tour itinerary - mauritius south island tour itinerary -

Surrounded by tropical rainforests, this incredible waterfall has two viewing decks where you can get some amazing pictures.

It does get very busy though with people wanting that perfect picture, however, once you’re at the front you’ll have a clear view of the falls

Seven Colored Earth

Finally, you’ll arrive at one of Mauritius’ great natural phenomenons know as Seven colored earth. Upon arriving here you’ll think you’ve arrived on Mars.

mauritius south island tour itinerary - Seven Colored Earth

These dunes are made up of several different colors, and they light up at sunrise making from an incredible spectacle.

You can walk around this GeoPark and there are lots of viewing platforms, you’ll get some amazing pictures here as the dunes are unobstructed.

There are toilets and restaurants here too, which is a nice break, after all that driving.

Day 3 Mauritius Tour Itinerary

So, on day 3 you could hire a private boat tour which includes swimming with dolphins, a trip to Crystal Rock then finishes by going for a picnic on the beautiful island of Île aux Benitiers.

I would recommend to try and do a full day on this tour to fully take in the sights, as you’ll be up at the crack of dawn for the dolphins. After this just kick back and relax on the island of Île aux Benitiers.

Swim With Dolphins

This is something we really wanted to do whilst in Mauritius and our hotel offered the excursion however with the boys being young we decided against doing it as the water would be cold and we would have had to get up at the crack of dawn.

mauritius south island tour itinerary - swim with dolphins

Yes, it does cost a lot ($250) to hire a private boat to take you out but it is a once in a lifetime experience and what better place to see them.

The bottlenose and spinner dolphins usually swim in groups of around 20 so it’s a wonderful sight to see. You can get cheaper excursions to see the dolphins from around $45 pp

mauritius south island tour itinerary - crystal rock

If you fancy seeing Crystal Rock It would be a good idea to combine the speed boat with a visit here. There are many tour operators that do this.

Crystal Rock is a natural rock formation that sits 200 meters away from the shore in the south of Mauritius. It attracts visitors due to its unusual appearance. With Le Morne as a backdrop, this makes for the perfect picture opportunity

mauritius south island tour itinerary - Île aux Benitiers

After an early morning and day swimming in the lagoon you, you’ll most likely want to relax for a bit and Lle aux Benitiers beach is the perfect place to relax and have a picnic. There’s even a small coconut farm and colony of migratory birds.

The island is open to the public however it is just the beaches and you can’t go wandering off into the island.

Our top tips for your trip

Here are my top tips getting the most out of your day trips around the South of Mauritius. In no particular order…

With our suggested 3-day tour itinerary, you will comfortably be able to see the best points of interest in the South of Mauritius.

Day 3 looks like there’s too much, however, we did this in less than a full day. A lot of the places are viewpoints and quick stop-offs.

When planning your itinerary, try not to squash too much in and end up rushing around. Use Google Maps to your advantage and plot your route and timings carefully.

Keep hydrated

If you’re thinking about hiking then you’ll need plenty of water supplies. Also, it’s worth bringing a few bottles on your taxi tour just in case. Luckily our driver kept up hydrated throughout. There’s plenty of little stalls and shops along the way, so don’t worry if you forget.

Pack the essentials

Again, make sure you bring all your essential gear, from a quality backpack, hiking shoes to your camera. If you’re planning on seeing the underwater waterfall make sure you bring a good camera or drone.

Take enough sun cream

It may be windy in the south but you will still get burnt, even though you might not feel it. If you have kids make sure they wear a secure hat, one that won’t blow off.

Get a tour guide

Renting a car can give you your own freedom to see and stop where you want. However, we decided we wanted to get a driver for the day, yes it’s more expensive but you can relax. Not only that, but your driver will also know some hidden gems along the way that you won’t have heard of.

Essential travel gear

See the underwater waterfall of Mauritius in style with this amazing drone. The DJI Phantom (View on Amazon) is the best drone on the market and you’ll be able to capture the highest quality picture and images with this bit of kit!

A Good Camera

With any vacation you want to capture the memories in high-quality, therefore I’d always recommend a great camera such as the Canon EOS 4000D (View on Amazon) . Mauritius is a beautiful island with so many amazing things to see, so don’t miss out and make sure you get the perfect picture every time!

Hydration Backpack

Traveling around all day can be tough work and you’ll need to take onboard lots of water. Rather than carry lots of heavy bottls which are hard to get to. Why not consider getting a hydration backpack like the CamelBak M.U.L.E (View on Amazon) .

Quality Walking Shoes

There are some amazing hiking trails in Mauritius, but you’ll find it hard to beat the Le Morne Trail. You should always get a good quality pair of hiking shoes such as the Salomon X-Ultra 3 (View on Amazon) .

This will ensure your feet are kept firmly on the ground, as some of the trails are pretty tough.

Hiking Backpack

If you’re thinking of doing the Le Morne hike on your day trips then you’re going to need a hiking backpack, and they don’t come much better than the Osprey Stratos 24 (View on Amazon) . Yes, you can probably get a cheaper one, however they don’t last and a poorly made.

If you’d like to know which are the best backpacks for hiking in Hawaii then this guide is for you!

Final Thoughts

The south of Mauritius is a wonderful place to explore, from its jagged coastline to lush forests there’s so much to impress you. We loved the south and could probably go back and see many more new things.

I’d recommend really looking into all the different areas in Mauritius. We did the north island which was completely different from the south and well worth a visit if you have time!

You can read all about our trip by checking out our North Tour Itinerary guide .

Our South island trip started from the St Regis Resort in Le Morne, and the loop took most of the day. There was a lot of driving but it was fine, as we got to stop off regularly and see so many different things. You’ll still get back in time for a dip in the pool!

Overall, don’t rush your itinerary and try and see too much, split your days up and take in the beauty of Mauritius

I hope this itinerary has helped you plan your trip to Mauritius, if you’ve enjoyed this post please share it with your friends and family.

About the Mauritius South Tour

Home to the second largest crocodilian and one of the largest tortoises in the world, Crocodile & Giant Tortoises Park And Nature Reserve (La Vanille Nature Park) invites you to discover its unique park through its animal enclosures, lush and exotic vegetation, insectarium and museum. As part of your visit to the Crocodile & Giant Tortoises Park, the park’s guides will lead you through some unforgettable walks - be amazed by the beautiful sceneries and the animal encounters.

Thousands of Nile crocodiles and giant tortoises are found in the park and you can watch them in maximum safety. Crocodiles are undoubtedly one of the scariest reptiles to exist and seeing them in front of you will be a moment you will never forget. Watch these predators that weigh about 750 kg laze under the sun or swim peacefully in the lake. The park features up to 5 enclosures for crocodiles, alligators and caimans . You will also have the opportunity to see the Giant Tortoises , and if you wish to feed them, a small fee is payable at the park. These Aldabra tortoises are the last surviving giant tortoise species that once inhabited the islands of the Indian ocean. They can grow to about 1.2m and weigh on average 250kg! Nearly 1,000 specimens populate the park and are part of the conservation program.

The Crocodile & Giant Tortoises Park also offers a mini zoo and petting farm where you can find most of the Mauritian mammals and reptiles including skinks, phelsumas (geckos), bats, deer, monkeys, wild boars, as well as domestic livestock such as goats, fat-tailed sheep and donkeys.

A must see is the park’s rare collection of butterflies and other brightly-colored insects (with about 23 000 species), which is one of the most fascinating in the world.

Gris – Gris

The village of Gris-Gris is found at the Southern tip of Mauritius. The appeal of Gris Gris lies in its scenery, the high cliffs here drop abruptly to the sea and the bracing winds of the Indian Ocean blow all year round. Gris-Gris is well known for its sea cliff and this is definitely a sight worth seeing. This part of the island is not surrounded by coral reefs and this is why thick waves crash directly on the cliffs. At the southern end of Gris-Gris you will have a great viewpoint on the cliffs and will see the squashing of waves against the flanks of the cliffs.

Bois Chéri

Visit of Bois Chéri, the biggest tea producer in Mauritius. It is also the first tea plantation in Mauritius dates back to 1892. As part of the visit to Bois Cheri, you will enjoy a guided tour with a local guide leading you through the factory and the tea plantation, offering you to discover the history, stories and tales of Bois Chéri and the importance of tea productions in Mauritius.

After the guided tour of the tea factory, you will visit the tea production museum learning more about the history of tea in Mauritius. The Bois Chéri offers a great panoramic view of the south of the island. Nowadays Bois Chéri produces a new range of flavored teas, green teas and herbal teas. You may taste them during your visit.

The Saint Aubin house was built in 1819. It has been home to several managers of the sugar estate, before being renovated in the 90's in order to preserve a part of the Mauritian heritage. Today one may still see the beams and ship poles used in its original construction.

You will also discover the vanilla plantation of the estate and the interesting transformation process of the vanilla orchid from the flower to the aromatic pod.

Grand Bassin (also known as Ganga Talao)

Grand Bassin is a lake situated 6km South East of Mare aux Vacoas in a secluded mountain area in the district of Savanne, deep in the heart of Mauritius. It is about 1800 feet (550m) above sea level. Grand Bassin with its Hindu temple is a holy lake for Mauritians of Hindu faith. The lake rests in the crater of an extinct volcano. It is said that the water inside the lake communicates with the waters of the holy Ganges of India. The Hindus of Mauritius declared the Grand Bassin as a Holy lake. The Hindu community performs a pilgrimage every year on the Maha Shivarati (Shiva’s Great Night), on this day they honor the Lord Shiva. Beside the lake there is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and other Gods including Hanuman, Lakshmi, and others.

Beside Grand Bassin you will also get to see the statue of Lord Shiva. The statue is of 108 feet (33 meters) and is the highest known statue in Mauritius (and one of the 50 highest statues in the world). The sight of the Mangal Mahadev statue is quite impressive as it is beautiful and gigantic in size.

The restaurant Hungry Crocodile is located at La Vanille Nature Park in the south of the island. Surrounded by lush greenery, beautiful palm trees, the Hungry Crocodile restaurant offers an exotic range of Mauritian dishes, and is also the only place on the island where you will be able to taste crocodile meals. Many say that crocodile meat tastes like chicken, here’s the perfect place and moment to find out if it’s true or not.
