by Matt Friedlander January 24, 2024, 3:16 pm
Todd Rundgren has lined an expansive 2024 U.S. trek that he’s dubbed the Me/We Tour. The 38-date road trip will kick off with an April 17 show in Minneapolis and is plotted out through a July 3 concert in Portland, Oregon.
Videos by American Songwriter
According to Todd-Rundgren.com, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer will be accompanied by a full band that features his longtime bassist Kasim Sulton and drummer Prairie Prince. The group is rounded out by sax player Bobby Strickland, keyboardist Gil Assayas, and guitarist Bruce McDaniel.
Tickets for Rundgren’s Me/We Tour are on sale now via various outlets. You can get your tickets via StubHub , where orders are 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program. StubHub is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.
Prior to the U.S. trek, Rundgren will be heading Down Under in February for a trio of concerts in Australia. The shows are scheduled for February 22 in Melbourne, February 23 in Brisbane, and February 24 in Sydney. The eclectic Melbourne-based rock act Sex on Toast will open those gigs.
Rundgren’s most recent concerts were a series of 2023 shows opening for Daryl Hall of Hall & Oates. Rundgren’s most recent studio album, Space Force , was released in October 2022. The collaborative project featured the veteran singer/songwriter teaming up with such artists as Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielsen, Adrian Belew, Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo, Crowded House’s Neil Finn, The Roots, Sparks, Thomas Dolby, The Lemon Twigs, and Steve Vai.
See the full Me/We Tour routing below. Rundgren fans will not want to pass up on this opportunity to see the “Hello, It’s Me” rocker and his band playing a mix of hits, deep cuts, and select covers at his concerts this year.
Don’t wait – these tickets are likely to go quickly. Head to StubHub now to see if tickets are available to a show near you!

A mind-blowing live personality, a revelation! A huge spontaneous crush! Power, cheekiness, everything that can reinstate one in the love for women and music. A never again to be missed!
Moses Sumney
Moses was amazing. Very enigmatic but still approachable, and he had a lot of fun with the crowd. The performance was incredible, his voice is truly something to behold. I've listened to "Worth It" a million times but still got chills when he hit the high note. Would highly recommend seeing Moses live, especially before he gets really famous and expensive to see.
The War on Drugs
Grace is a highly underrated quality for a rock band to possess. When compared to other, more universal assets like rawness, volume and ability it might seem a little forgettable, but a band playing to the absolute best of their ability and making it look as natural as breathing can be the genesis of some truly unforgettable moments of live music. Not one band that I’ve seen sums this sight up as well as Philadelphia indie rockers The War on Drugs, and when it comes to their sold out show at the Koko, Camden’s most ornate venue, most traditional phrases describing a well played gig seem too violent to sum it up. They didn’t “smash it”, they didn’t “blow the roof off”, they didn’t “destroy the place”, they were far better than that. Make no mistake, Adam Granduciel and co played up a storm, their psychedelia inflected country-rock filling every inch of this beautiful venue but the atmosphere was unlike any gig I’ve been to in a very long time. The crowd lost themselves in the music in a way that didn’t lead to mindless moshing and crowd-surfing, the 1400 people were enraptured, moved by the music, not to the music. It was an experience as beautiful as it was exciting and anyone with a passing interest in this life affirming lunacy we call Rock and Roll should seek it out as soon as possible.
The most incredible, angelic, beautiful person to ever grace this earth. I've never been more stunned by a performance. SZA met and exceeded all of my expectations, I cannot put into words how amazing she is live. It's an experience you don't want to miss if you get the chance to see her. She was so happy and humble and was continuiously appoligizing for being sick and I honestly couldn't tell, that's how great she is. Also the experience brought me life not only because I got to see her preform but because everyone was singing every single word to every song with her. Truly incredible when you are surrounded in a room full of people singing your favorite songs at the top of their lungs. Needless to say I want a live version of ctrl after all of this so I can reminisce.
Jon Hopkins
Hands down the best live concert I've been to in a long time. The newest album is a dream to hear live and this was made even better by the Audio-Visual effects, which were amazing! The venue is a really great space with a stunning sound system and tech. at hand - but really the credit goes to a fantastic artist who performed amazingly. Most of the setlist was from his newest release, but his editing and remix of these tracks and sneak peeks of some newer tracks made it even better!
Absolutely the best concert I was ever at, honestly I don't think any other artist could top this. She had such an incredible presence on stage, every eye was on her and her wonderful team. Dua and her dancers moved gracefully and fluidly, with bursts of power and energy. Her vocals were insanely beautiful, every word was sung with such passion and love. Her grand finale of IDGAF and New Rules was simply amazing, with breathtaking choreography and stunning visuals behind her. The band sounded great and the backup vocalists and dancers were on point for every minute. Without a doubt in my mind it was the very best live performance I have ever seen, and I don't think anything in the future will ever compare to it. Dua Lipa, Olympia Theatre, Dublin. Monday 9th April 2018.

Since launching our first app back in 2007, you guys - the fans, the concert-goers, the musical explorers - have been at the very heart of everything we do here. Our dream and our drive was always to bring Songkick members closer than ever before to the sounds they love, and the people who create them. Simply put, we pride ourselves on being your direct link to the greatest music artists on the planet.
Who are they, exactly? Well, according to our members, that changes almost by the hour...so let's talk about how Songkick keeps you in the loop.
Best live artists
A quick glance at our Most Popular Artists chart might tell you a few key things about the sorts of music fans we vibe with. For starters, it shows just how varied our members' tastes are. Pop, rock, dance, hip-hop, indie/alt and R&B all feature heavily, alongside a whole bunch of underground genres and rising scenes.
No two of you are quite the same - and frankly, we love to see it! Any time you check in, our 'most popular artists worldwide' and 'trending artists this week' leaderboards always read like a line-up for the greatest, most diverse live festival on Earth.
Among the top searches and best-selling music artists on our global roster, you might find anyone from Rhianna, Coldplay, Eminem and Ed Sheeran, through to Drake, U2, Kanye West,
Maroon 5, Beyoncé, The Midnight, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Taylor Swift, Calvin Harris, Imagine Dragons, Justin Bieber - and that's barely looking outside the top 20.
After all, if the weekly race for a spot on our most popular charts tells us anything, it's that the whole concept of 'best live bands' is a tricky one to pin down. Everybody's looking for a completely different type of experience, every night of the year.
That's another thing we love about our users: you're incredible at keeping us on our toes. In return, we’ve made it our mission to help keep you on yours.
Find and follow your favorite artists on Songkick
When people talk about the 'best live bands in the world', a few big names will reliably come up time and time again. Just as crucially, there'll always be a good handful of newcomers, hot tips and total curveballs in there too.

What are Broadway Tours?
Broadway Tours refer to traveling productions of popular Broadway shows that bring the magic of Broadway to cities and theaters across the country or even internationally. These tours allow audiences outside of New York City to experience the thrill and excitement of acclaimed Broadway productions in their own hometowns.
What is the difference between subscription tickets and regular tickets for Broadway Tours?
Subscription tickets for Broadway Tours are usually sold as part of a subscription package, offering patrons the opportunity to secure tickets for a series of shows within a season. Subscribers often enjoy benefits such as priority seating, discounted prices, and exclusive offers. Regular tickets, on the other hand, are individual tickets that can be purchased for specific performances of a Broadway Tour. These tickets are available to the general public and can be bought separately for each desired show.
Are there age restrictions for Touring shows?
Yes, age restrictions for touring shows can vary depending on the content and themes of the production. While some shows are suitable for audiences of all ages, others may have age recommendations or restrictions due to mature content, language, or intense scenes. The specific age restrictions or recommendations for each show can be found on the official websites of the respective theaters or ticketing platforms. It's important to review these guidelines or consult with the theater directly to ensure the appropriateness of the content for yourself or your group, especially when considering attendance with children or younger individuals.
Can I get refunds or exchange tickets if I can't attend a show?
Ticket exchange or refund policies for Broadway Tours are determined by the specific theater or ticket vendor from which you purchased your tickets. It's advisable to review the terms and conditions of your ticket purchase or contact the theater's box office or the authorized ticket vendor directly for information regarding ticket exchanges, refunds, or any applicable policies. Policies may vary, so it's important to clarify these details in advance. Please note that specific details and policies for Broadway Tours may vary depending on the production, theater, or ticket vendor. It's always recommended to consult the official websites, authorized ticket vendors, or contact the respective theaters directly for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
Can I find information about accessibility for individuals with disabilities?
Accessibility information may vary for each theater and production. It's best to reach out to the individual theater or show's official website. They can provide you with comprehensive information regarding wheelchair accessibility, hearing devices, captioning services, and other accommodations.

Jennifer Lopez is hitting the road this summer for her This Is Me Now… The Tour . On Thursday morning (Feb. 15), the singer announced the 30+ city tour in support of her new album, This Is Me… Now , which is due out on Friday (Feb. 16).
Ben Affleck’s Song That Jennifer Lopez Dunked on in Dunkin’s 2024 Super Bowl Ad Is…
Trending on billboard.
In an interview this week, Lopez said her first studio LP since 2014’s A.K.A. is “the best album that I’ve ever made … The most honest and true – it took a long time for me as a musical artist to get there. I’m really happy and proud of this in a way that I don’t think I ever have been before.”
Lopez’s ninth album is a sequel of sorts to her 2002 This Is Me… Then collection, which she released when she was first dating Ben Affleck, to whom she is now married. “They’ve followed me on that journey and watched me make mistakes and go in and out of relationships and wondered what was going on,” JLo said about her fans.
Lopez and Affleck split in 2004, then reunited in 2021 and tied the knot in a surprise Las Vegas wedding in July 2022 – 20 years after the original album’s release. The new album also features a sequel to a track from the first This Is Me album, “Dear Ben Pt. II,” plus the previously released dance-y single “ Can’t Get Enough .”

Music and concerts | todd rundgren on his career, longevity and why his latest tour will resonate with fans.
In the annals of popular music, you’d be hard-pressed to find an artist as eclectic and prolific as Todd Rundgren. To call him creatively restless is like calling The Beatles a quaint pop band.
As a solo artist, he’s notched 27 releases under his belt (with the most recent being 2022’s “Space Force.”) And that doesn’t include projects he’s recorded as a member of The Nazz, Utopia and the New Cars.
As if that’s not enough, the Pennsylvania native has an equally impressive résumé as a producer, having worked on albums for a number of seminal artists ranging from Badfinger (“Straight Up”), the New York Dolls (self-titled, “Cause I Sez So”) and Meat Loaf (“Bat Out of Hell”) to Grand Funk Railroad (“We’re An American Band,” “Shinin’ On”), XTC (“Skylarking”) and the Psychedelic Furs (“Forever Now”).
But for the man who once released an album called “The Ever Popular Tortured Artist Effect,” performing live does just as much to satiate his creative urges with the most recent road jaunt being the Me/We Tour. And while recent live outings have found him going from performing 25 virtual shows from Chicago in the immediate aftermath of the pandemic to opening for fellow Keystone stater Daryl Hall, this current string of dates — which includes two nights at Penn’s Peak in Jim Thorpe, Saturday and Sunday — finds Rundgren wanting to do something specifically for his devotees.
“I figured when it was time for me to get to doing my tour, I want to give the fans something special and figure out some sort of sustainable production that can travel but it’s still a show that’s worth coming out for,” he said in an early April interview. “I figure one of the things that I may not have done recently is a real deep dive of a lot of the stuff that rarely gets played or has never been played. A lot of it is fan favorites, but sometimes I can’t figure out how it will fit into what I’m doing. I think it’s going to be a very enjoyable evening for the fans despite the fact that for at least some segment of them, a lot of the material might be unfamiliar.”
While a quick peek at Rundgren’s set list from some recent overseas gigs reveals that he’s been trotting out well-known gems like “Hello It’s Me,” “I Saw the Light” and “Can We Still Be Friends,” the former hermit of Mink Hollow promises to dust off a number of more obscure nuggets.
“I had never played the song ‘Afterlife’ before. It’s from the album called ‘Liars,’ but it didn’t work in the context of the show now, so we never performed it during the ‘Liars’ show,” he explained. “I just did a brief [swing through] Australia and we worked it up for that tour and it really sounded great. It sounded really good and the audience liked it. ‘Liars’ was a pretty popular album among my fans. To find a song that hadn’t been played off of that was a little special.”
So where does Rundgren’s insatiable need to embrace the various aspects of the recording studio and any sort of emerging technology as a means of helping realize his artistic visions come from?
Part of it starts with a childhood growing up in Upper Darby Township, where early on, the budding creative genius started out being enraptured by his parents’ singles collection.
“The earliest musical memories I have are of a little RCA 45 player that my parents got. I remember it to this day,” he recalled. “It was a brown Bakelite with a little round grill on the front and a spindle with the red top on it. And you would stack singles on the spindle and they would automatically play one after another. My parents had collected a lot of Boston Pops light classical performances like ‘Chicken Reel’ and ‘Skaters Waltz’ and that sort of thing. They were pressed on colored vinyl — red, green, blue and yellow. For me, listening to the music on that little player and staring through the red, blue and green record or putting one on top of the other — it was [my first] multi-media experience.”
While the young Rundgren spent time dabbling with various instruments including flute, clarinet and his grandmother’s stand-up piano (…“it’s where I learned how to pick out melodies, which I actually turned out to be pretty good at…”), it was a specific instrumental that led to his parents purchasing their budding musician son an instrument when he was seven years old.
“Once I heard ‘Walk, Don’t Run’ by The Ventures, it was all about the guitar,” Rundgren explained. “That was the future and I knew I had to learn how to play. My parents realized that I wanted to do it badly enough and that I was serious that they bought a guitar, but they had to buy lessons along with it, which I hated.”
Within a year of graduating high school, Rundgren went from his first band Money to playing with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band-influenced Woody’s Truck Stop and eventually landing with rock band Nazz. Looking to record material more along the lines of The Who and The Beatles, Rundgren and his crew were signed by Atlantic Records subsidiary Screen Gems Columbia (SGC). Assigned jazz musician Bill Traut as a producer for the 1968 self-titled debut album (“…he [Traut] essentially spent most of his time reading the trades in the [recording] booth.”), Rundgren soon took it upon himself to remix the album himself because “…we didn’t get what we wanted out of this guy even though we paid for him.”
Rundgren’s first turn at a console was the beginning of a storied production career that while he was technically proficient at, wasn’t level with his interactions with some of the artists whose projects he oversaw, most notably XTC.
“I knew how to make records and how to make them sound a certain way, but as time went on, there were a lot of painful moments between me and whoever I was working with because I was either incognizant or didn’t care about the personality part,” he admitted.
With so much life experience under his belt, the 75-year-old Rundgren shows no signs of slowing down. And much of it has to do with his willingness to follow his own muse.
“I think what I’ve learned is, and it seems especially applicable these days is that you don’t measure your success by others’ estimation and you have to be patient,” he said.
“Sometimes what you do doesn’t fit with the zeitgeist of what’s going on. They say art is brief and history is long. The point is that you don’t do your art for this time. Do it in a way that it doesn’t matter when somebody discovers it. That way, maybe you’ll have a longer life as an artist. A lot of artists feel like if they don’t make it now, they’re never going to make it. It’s still an interesting experience for me. I don’t feel like I would run out of musical ideas. At least not in a reasonable human lifetime.”

Madonna Talks Life on Tour With Her Kids: “Nothing Brings Me More Happiness”
Madonna has been clear from the beginning that The Celebration Tour is no mere “greatest hits” circuit. It’s more like an artist’s MoMA retrospective blown up into an arena tour showcasing her singular contributions to the culture. It’s also the Queen of Pop’s most deeply personal tour yet, paying tribute to her influences, mentors, parents, and the friends and collaborators she’s lost. Nowhere is that personal touch more apparent than the inclusion of four of her children in the show. Across 78 performances so far, Madonna has worked double-duty as mom with son David and daughters Mercy, Stella, and Estere along for the ride—each one getting their own moment on stage. Mercy accompanies her mother on piano during “Bad Girl,” while David duets with his mom on “Mother and Father” (which, apparently, required the young musician to work up a bit of confidence to do). Twins Stella and Estere meanwhile, show off their dance skills during “Don’t Tell Me” and a segment dedicated to ballroom.
Ahead of her final arena dates in Mexico and a historic (potentially record-breaking) free show in Rio de Janeiro, Madonna sat down to answer questions over e-mail about life on the road with her children.

Rocco performed on stage during MDNA , and Lola worked in the wardrobe department on that same tour. Your children always seem to be involved in some capacity with your work. How does that feel as a mother?
I have always been blessed with children who are interested in music, dance, and art. Starting from the top with Lola , who was not only an incredible ballet dancer and and a rhythmic gymnast, switching to musical theater and contemporary dance. Now she is a unique singer and song writer in her own right. When I go on tour, nothing brings me more happiness to know, we are all working on the same show creating the magic together. It would be boring if they were just traveling from hotel to hotel, and occasionally coming to watch the show. Of course, I am also their mother so sometimes we get on each other’s nerves. We are a family of artists but are also a family and that’s what happens.

Madonna, Mercy, and her piano teacher Ric’Key Pageot.
It seems like your children have been honing their talents for years. How important is it for you as a mother to make sure they take their art seriously?
Because The Celebration Tour is a retrospective of my life, I thought it made perfect sense to include all of my children still living with me in the show. As they all dance, and play musical instruments, and have been doing so for years. David has played guitar since he was a child. Mercy has played piano since she was eight and has been classically trained most of her life. Eventually, when I adopted the twins, they started to play piano and dance as well. There is always an endless parade of music and dance teachers coming and going in our house. And then we add to that Djing as Estere showed a keen interest in learning. She started taking DJ lessons and took it very seriously.
Madonna and Mercy onstage performing “Bad Girl.”
Each of the children has their own moment in the show. Mercy James playing piano during “Bad Girl” was a highlight. Any back story on how that all came together?
I saw a strange poetic juxtaposition of hedonism, erotic exploration emerging into the light of Mercy, sitting stoically at her grand piano playing Chopin as she beckoned me towards her, making me think about the choices I have made in my life. Singing “Bad Girl” was kind of a confession, not an apology, and I felt we had an unspoken understanding of what was happening.
Stella dancing during “Don’t Tell Me.”
Stella and Mercy.
Stella performs in “Don’t Tell Me,” which is a big number during the show. How was she with learning the choreography?
Stella, who I would say is my shyest child, comes alive on stage, and I love having her as my little cowgirl. But she happens to be an incredible fine artist, and I’m hoping that she follows in the footsteps of Rocco who after being a B-boy, skater, and graffiti artist has really come into his own as an incredible painter.
David and Madonna performing onstage.
David during the show’s finale.
David singing a verse during “Mother and Father” was fantastic. Has he expressed any interest in following in your footsteps with a musical career? He had originally only played guitar at the beginning of the tour. Did it take some convincing to get him to sing?
“Mother and Father” is one of my favorite moments in the show because it gave me a chance to not only honor my mother and her memory but also to honor David’s mother and her memory. He has always wanted to sing and play guitar. He loves being on stage. This is nothing new. I love that we both get to sing to our mothers. Much of the show is about motherhood, family, and the importance of that in my artistic life.
Estere showing off her moves.
Estere, backstage in a “Britney Spears” t-shirt.
How did Estere get so into ballroom? Does she have any vogue mentors (aside from you)?
While Estere was learning how to DJ she became interested in ballroom competitions and just by luck, one of my choreographer’s assistants, Ivy Mugler, has her own ballroom house called House of Mugler. She started taking Estere aside during rehearsals in another room, and within a couple of weeks she was doing death drops and spins and surprising us with her ability. So, of course we had to turn that section of the show into Estere’s Ball.
Because this tour is a celebration of your entire career, did you kids learn or realize anything new about you?
I think what my children learned the most in this year of rehearsing and performing is that if you want to follow your dreams, you have to work hard for them. And if all of them choose something different later in life, they will never forget this year of blood, sweat, and tears.
David, Stella, Mercy and Estere.
Estere studying.
The tour just wrapped up its U.S. dates. With five shows in Mexico City coming up and the huge free concert in Rio, what’s going through your mind right now?
This show was created for an indoor arena. Transforming and adapting it to perform outdoors on the beach, with no roof in Rio is going to be quite an undertaking and full of surprises. God willing, we will pull it off, and it will be an experience they will never forget.

Kyle Rittenhouse, deadly shooter, college speaker? A campus gun-rights tour sparks outrage
Kyle Rittenhouse is not a typical college campus speaker.
In 2020, at the age of 17, he took an AR-15-style rifle to a Black Lives Matter demonstration and fired it, killing two people and injuring a third. Rittenhouse said he pulled the trigger in self-defense and was acquitted of wrongdoing .
He has since penned a book, “Acquitted,” and has set out on a series of college speaking events dubbed the " Rittenhouse Recap ." He is slated to appear Thursday at Clemson University in South Carolina.
Rittenhouse is selling books, and ostensibly promoting the right to bear arms on campus, but he’s also trying to persuade young people to join the conservative movement. The key group behind the appearances, Turning Point USA, is led by the self-described “youth director” of President Donald Trump’s first campaign and a key ally rallying votes for Trump this year.
The group told USA TODAY that it isn’t a nationally organized tour – that its chapters independently requested Rittenhouse. Student chapter leaders told USA TODAY that Rittenhouse is an important conversation starter. “I think sometimes you have to be kind of polarizing to pull a crowd," said Brady Seymour, president of Turning Point USA's chapter at Kent State University in Ohio.
The provocative choice of backing the Rittenhouse tour is par for the course for Turning Point and its local affiliates, which have hosted controversial figures like Nick Fuentes, a white nationalist and Holocaust denier . But it has stirred up devastating pain and disdain in a man he almost killed.
"He has used every moment to gloat and to make light of taking life," Paul Prediger said, speaking publicly for the first time about what happened in protest of a Rittenhouse speech last week at Kent State. "As if that were not enough, Kyle has embraced and been embraced by those who peddle hateful rhetoric, who believe in nationalism that excludes those who do not look like or think like them, and who have sought to amplify a troubling desire for violence against supposed political, cultural, and religious enemies."
Rittenhouse's message on his campus tour – that students should be allowed to take up arms, including to fend off "these Hamas, Palestinian terrorists" if they invade dormitories – has sparked protests and raised questions about free speech and just how far it should be allowed to go. A similar question helped lead to the resignations of the presidents of the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University , who stepped down amid fierce criticism for equivocating when asked if calls for the genocide of Jews would be allowed on campus.
Rittenhouse, in a statement provided by spokesperson Jillian Anderson, said his campus appearances are not part of an official tour or book-selling venture, and he is reminding students of their rights. "Every American has a constitutional right to bear arms," he said, "and it should not be infringed by a college campus."
Experts say context matters. Tom Ginsburg, a law professor at the University of Chicago and faculty director of the forum on free inquiry and expression, told USA TODAY that federal regulations require colleges and universities to ensure their learning environment is not hostile. Within that framework, some incendiary language could be permitted in a general public space but prohibited if directed at an individual or group.
"That's a key distinction," he said. "Is it said in general, as part of a general demonstration, or is it shouted at a particular group of people who might then reasonably perceive it as being a threat of some kind? And if it's the latter, then it could be punished."
Kyle Rittenhouse says students should carry guns on campus
On the evening of Aug. 25, 2020 , Rittenhouse brought a rifle to the site of intense protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin, sparked by the police shooting of Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old Black man. Amid a scuffle with protesters, Rittenhouse fatally shot Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber and wounded Prediger.
In a trial that drew national attention in 2021, Rittenhouse said he shot the men in self-defense after Rosenbaum threatened his life and Prediger pointed a gun at him. Prediger said he thought Rittenhouse was an active shooter. Critics said Rittenhouse had no right to fire his weapon and was illegally acting as a vigilante militia. A jury acquitted him of all five charges he faced, including intentional homicide.
Rittenhouse soon took on celebrity status in right-wing circles where the right to bear arms and use them to defend life and property is sacrosanct. The weekend after his trial, he flew to Florida to visit Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort and to appear on Fox News for an interview with conservative host Tucker Carlson.
At Kent State, Rittenhouse implored students to fight to be allowed to carry guns at school.
"We have these blue boxes that are on the campus – we've all seen them, you push a button, it calls the police, and you get connected to a dispatcher," he said. "How long does it take a cop to show up, though? When somebody is trying to kidnap you or somebody is threatening your life, is that the quickest option to be able to protect yourself?"
He encouraged students to join conservative groups like Turning Point USA and said elected officials don't care about them.
"What makes me really scared, and I get really upset that people, especially young campus students, aren't allowed to carry firearms, just because I'm scared that what happens if these Hamas, Palestinian terrorists come to the U.S. and try to attack us?" Rittenhouse said. "Are we supposed to be left defenseless? Are you supposed to be left defenseless because you're not allowed to have a gun in your dormitory?"
After Prediger – formerly known as Gaige Grosskreutz – criticized his speaking tour, Rittenhouse posted a video clip on X, formerly Twitter. It showed Prediger admitting he pointed a gun in Rittenhouse's direction before being shot. Rittenhouse did not include text in the post.
Students accuse Turning Point of 'hateful actions'
In the days leading up to his arrival at Kent State, demonstrators staged a walkout, organized a vigil, and spray painted "Welcome, killer" on a free-speech landmark. A Change.org petition urging the university and Turning Point USA to cancel Rittenhouse's visit gathered more than 3,700 signatures. The event spurred Prediger to speak out. Hundreds showed up to protest.
"I stand with the students of Kent State University who have had enough," Prediger said.
Students said it was particularly insensitive for the campus to host Rittenhouse and his message about guns on campus given the school's history. On May 4, 1970, four students were gunned down at Kent State when the Ohio National Guard fired into a crowd gathered to protest the invasion of Cambodia during the Vietnam War.
Aimée Flores, a representative from the university's Spanish and Latine Student Association, said the organization encouraged students "to learn more about Turning Point USA.... their hateful actions on campus and throughout this whole year, why we don't agree with their actions."
Seymour, the school's Turning Point chapter president, said the event was about "creating conversation." It had no relation to the 1970 killing of protestors, he said.
"In his speech, he talked mostly about having the right to carry on campus, considering students aren't allowed to at Kent State," Seymour said.
"These two stories are completely different and 50 years apart," he said.
Protests at every campus on 'Rittenhouse Recap' tour
Other “Rittenhouse Recap” appearances prompted vocal opposition and protest.
At Western Kentucky University , protesters held a sit-in and march last month. His appearance at East Tennessee State University in February also sparked demonstrations – local press reports show one protester wielding a sign accusing Turning Point of empowering "stochastic terrorism" – the incitement of violence through public demonization of a person or group.
In the days leading up to Rittenhouse's appearance at The University of Memphis in March, the school fielded a barrage of complaints from students, faculty, and community members. Protesters held signs with messages like, “Put Rittenhouse behind bars, not a podium.” Rittenhouse abruptly left the stage after about 30 minutes as protesters shouted him down.
Universities said allowing the events – and the protests – upholds key tenets of American democracy and academic tradition: Free speech and freedom of assembly. Turning Point USA’s chapter at The University of Memphis is a registered student organization, the school said.
"We cannot ban speech because it would go against a core value and because of well-established laws governing free speech on public university campuses,” Kent State said in a statement provided to USA TODAY. “Upholding the First Amendment rights of free speech and peaceful assembly for all, the university has a long history of allowing peaceful dialogue from all points of view, including those whom some may feel are offering different and/or sometimes controversial opinions."
Turning Point has history of booking controversial speakers
Turning Point USA has a track record of booking controversial and provocative figures, placing it at the center of debates over First Amendment rights on college campuses, where it says it has grown to more than 800 chapters since its founding in 2012.
In late 2016 and early 2017, the group was behind a nationwide campus speaking tour by Milo Yiannopoulos – a former Breitbart writer banned from Twitter for harassment and dropped from the agenda at a Conservative Political Action Conference after videos surfaced of him defending sexual relationships between 13-year-old boys and grown men. Yiannopoulos said he was joking and may have used "imprecise language."
In 2019, Turning Point’s Iowa State University chapter claimed partial responsibility for extending a speaking invitation to Fuentes, a white nationalist who has said he wants a "total Aryan victory" and self-identified as a "sexist man," according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Last year, representatives of the group confronted, criticized and assaulted an LGBTQ+ instructor at Arizona State University in Tempe.
Turning Point has taken action against members for promoting hate speech. In 2019, the group expelled a member at the University of Nevada Las Vegas after a video surfaced of the student shouting "white power" and using a white supremacist hand sign.
Andrew Kolvet, a spokesperson for Turning Point USA, said the Fuentes event was not sanctioned, and a local chapter official was tricked into arranging the appearance. He said that Turning Points has repeatedly denounced white nationalism . Kolvet said that in general, students should be able to hear from controversial speakers. "We do our best to make sure that there's going to be enriching discussion, that the speaker is going to be, I would say, uplifting, inspiring, productive."
He said Turning Point chapters chose Rittenhouse as a speaker. "There just happened to be schools that asked for Kyle because he came out with a book and he made himself available, essentially."
Turning Point touts itself as a key player in conservative politics , as does its founder and president, Charlie Kirk , who told conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh 's show in 2019 that he “traveled the country for about 70 days straight carrying Donald Trump Jr.’s bags and getting his Diet Cokes.” In addition to becoming Trump Jr.'s "body man," he took on the role of "youth director of the campaign," Kirk said. Speaking at the Republican National Convention in 2020, he called President Trump the "bodyguard of Western civilization."
Kirk also speaks on college campuses, where his fiery rhetoric has sparked controversy. At a speech last fall at Missouri State University , he said all immigration to the U.S. should be halted, called global warming an "academic distraction," and speculated about how many Hamas sleeper cells might be active in the U.S.
Expert says universities grappling with non-academic provocateurs
Ginsburg stressed that colleges and universities must allow free speech. "It’s pretty clear that their obligation is to make sure that event goes forward and to make sure it's not disrupted," he said. "At the same time, peaceful protest also has a long tradition on campus."
Ginsburg said an added dimension to their challenges is the more recent phenomenon of campus speakers who intentionally draw negative attention.
"What we're now seeing is that people are sometimes getting invited to campus who aren't necessarily academics. They're not articulating a truly academic point of view," Ginsburg said. "In some cases, we have provocateurs, including some people who actually are seeking to be canceled, seeking to be protested."
He said people like Rittenhouse often capitalize on controversy. "He's certainly part of a media ecosystem in which you do have some of those kind of characters where, if you can get canceled, it ups your follower rate and you can portray yourself as a victim," he said.
To the Turning Point leader at Kent State, it's a tactic the group uses to advance conversation.
"That's the sad reality of how people are," Seymour said. "You kind of have to stir up drama or be a polarizing character for people to end up paying attention to you."
