Please Help : Cruise Control is not working (C300)

Hi all, I am Frey, 28years, Female and new to this forum. I just bought used W204 C300 (my first Mercedes) year:2010, the condition is very good and almost 40.000 KMs. The problem is the Cruise Control is not working, no any error messages, I checked the car to authorized dealer and they scanned the car with no errors also. All the ESP, ABS etc are not errors But when I push the CC Stick, the scanner is communicated with the CC but it can't active. Nothing showing in the MID that indicated the CC is active nor the limit when I push the stick. After 6 hours of working, we dont have any ideas how to fix this. Frey, Try driving the car over 35mph then pull back on the CC lever. I think you have to be rolling for the system to work, at least that's the way with most other cars. Good luck.  

you have to be cruising over 25 mph or so for cruise to engage. it wont activate while sitting still. there is no reason for it to activate. once activated you will see it come on in the cluster.  

In the version she has it should still display a message. It wound up being a bad ESP switch.

Anyone notice the red brake light in the lower left? Might have something to do with it as well.

The cruise control will not operate if the computer senses a fault my problem was caused by a broken turbo intercooler air pipe  

While driving my c300 /2008 the message esp not available keeps showing up and the cars slows down immediatly and i cannot accelarate since it wont take any gz order anymore.i have to shut it down and restart it to be able to drive it. Please help  

That is the computer going into limp home mode. You will need a scan to find what is causing the problem. I had the same on my car and it was finally found to be a leaky intercooler air intake coming from the turbo. The cruise control I was told,is operated by the gearbox computer but it uses a myriad of inputs from other computers and sensors. This is not a job one can do if you do not have a star diagnosis

Many changes are in evidence with the 2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class. For the first time ever, a new coupe model debuts and is offered in the same configurations as the sedan. The C-Class is also more powerful and fuel-efficient this year, as the C350's V6 gets a big bump in horsepower, while a new turbocharged four-cylinder model debuts in a new trim, the C250. The C300's engine remains the same, but is now only available with all-wheel drive. The seven-speed automatic transmission has been altered for improved fuel efficiency, while the C63 gets the automated manual found in most other AMG models. Other changes include additional standard equipment, new front-end styling and a revised interior that does away with the old pop-up LCD infotainment screen.

With several key changes for 2012, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class reaffirms its status as one of the best luxury sport sedans while chiseling out a similar position with its new coupe model.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C250 Sport 4dr Sedan (1.8L 4cyl Turbo 7A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $4.27 per gallon for premium unleaded in North Dakota.

Vehicle overview.

While other luxury sedans chase down the BMW 3 Series with talk of increased sportiness and improved lap times around some racetrack in a German forest, the 2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is very much its own car. Oh, it can still be plenty sporty, but not at the expense of ride comfort or the general dynamic qualities indicative of its brand.

The most obvious addition for 2012 is the new C-Class coupe, which gives Mercedes a more affordable entry in the two-door segment than the old CLK. Shared between both coupe and sedan is revised styling, with more curvaceous headlamps and better integrated LED running lights. The interior also has been reworked with higher-quality materials, a more visually interesting design and a fixed display screen in lieu of the old pop-up unit.

The engine lineup has been diversified for 2012. Is fuel economy a priority? The new C250 model has an efficient yet reasonably punchy turbocharged four-cylinder. Live in a frosty clime? The C300 4Matic comes standard with all-wheel drive. Should you want class-competitive power, the C350 now provides it with 302 horsepower (last year's C350 made 268 hp). And finally, there's the C63 AMG, which is essentially a German muscle car cranking out 451 tire-smoking horses.

In total, the 2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class now offers more choice while adding to its already impressive array of talents. Of course, it still resides in a segment with quality picks such as the Audi A4 , BMW 3 Series , Infiniti G and Volvo S60. We recommend them all, but there's only one car in the class that provides the honest, unapologetic and meticulously engineered goodness of a genuine Mercedes-Benz.

Performance & mpg

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz C250 is powered by a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder that produces 201 hp and 229 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic are standard. In Edmunds performance testing, a C250 Sport sedan went from zero to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds -- about a second slower than the four-cylinder-powered Audi A4. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 21 mpg city/31 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined, which is very good for the segment.

The all-wheel-drive Mercedes-Benz C300 4Matic is powered by a 3.0-liter V6 that produces 228 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque. According to Mercedes, it should match the acceleration of the lighter C250. Fuel economy stands at 18/25/20.

Under the hood of the Mercedes-Benz C350 is a 3.5-liter V6 good for 302 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive comes with the C350 4Matic coupe. In Edmunds testing, it went from zero to 60 in 5.6 seconds -- a number on par with the quicker members of its class. Fuel economy is an excellent 20/29/23.

With the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, you get a 6.2-liter V8 that cranks out 451 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque; add the AMG Development package and horsepower gets bumped up to 481. A seven-speed automated manual transmission is standard. In Edmunds performance testing, a C63 Coupe with the AMG Development package went from zero to 60 mph in an incredible 4.2 seconds. Fuel economy is 13/19/15.

The C63 AMG Black Series gets a more powerful version of the 6.2-liter V8 good for 510 hp and 457 lb-ft of torque. That should obviously make it quicker than the regular model.

Every 2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class comes standard with stability and traction control, antilock brakes, a driver knee airbag, front side thorax airbags, front side pelvic airbags and full-length curtain airbags. Also standard is Mercedes Attention Assist, which monitors the driver for signs of drowsiness and inattention. Rear side thorax airbags are standard on the coupe and optional on the sedan. Other safety-oriented options include the Lane Tracking package -- which adds a blind-spot warning system and a lane-departure warning system -- and Mercedes-Benz mbrace emergency telematics.

In Edmunds brake testing, a C350 Sport came to a stop from 60 mph in 108 feet. The C250 Sport and C63 came within 5 feet of matching that outstanding distance.

In government crash testing, the C-Class sedan received an overall crash rating of four out of five stars, with three stars overall in a frontal crash and five stars overall in a side crash. In testing done by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the C-Class sedan received top marks, including a "Good" rating for frontal-offset, side impact and roof-strength tests.

Regardless of whether you opt for the 2012 C250, C300 or C350, Mercedes' entry-level luxury car boasts precise steering and handling, as well as overall driving dynamics that are comparable to other sedans and coupes in the segment. Despite their more sporting character, the Sport variants offer a firm but perfectly damped ride and the ability to tackle long road trips with ease. The Luxury variants ride a little softer and have a quieter exhaust system, resulting in a more serene driving environment.

Though the C250's four-cylinder isn't as potent as the turbocharged four-cylinder in the Audi A4/A5, it's far quieter, more refined and gets slightly better fuel economy. There's absolutely no shame in opting for the base model C-Class. The C300 4Matic offers slightly more power, but is really only necessary for those who need all-weather traction. The C350 is easily the enthusiast's choice, as its V6 has a sharp, responsive character, and increased horsepower for 2012 makes a big difference.

Then there's the C63 AMG. Packing a ferocious V8 that matches the mighty Cadillac CTS-V in a straight line, the C63 is the German equivalent of a muscle car. While not quite as engaging or agile as the BMW M3, the C63 responds to driver inputs with added sharpness and a degree of communication few Mercedes-Benz models have ever offered. The new transmission for 2012 increases driver involvement, but it isn't quite as responsive to inputs as BMW's automated manual. On the other hand, it's far smoother around town. The C63 AMG Black Series is essentially a racecar that you can drive on the road so it's an incredible performance machine, but likely too hard-core for casual driving.

Just tugging on the C-Class' door handle makes you feel as if you've cracked open an impenetrable vault. This model's interior was always well crafted, but it gets even better for 2012, with upgraded switchgear and a more eye-pleasing design. The controls are straightforward for this class of car, and Mercedes' optional COMAND electronics interface is fairly easy to use; the iPod interface is particularly user-friendly and quick to respond. The COMAND screen no longer pops out of the dash like before, and it seems like a good change to us, as it's a cleaner look and one less thing to go wrong.

Though the sedan is bigger than previous C-Class editions, it's hardly the best choice for growing families. Some might find a child seat difficult to install in the narrow, bucketlike backseat positions, and the 12.4-cubic-foot trunk is on the small side.

As for the coupe, it shouldn't come as a surprise that its backseat is quite cramped. Legroom is about par for the segment (squished), while headroom is non-existent for those taller than about 5-foot-8. In total, the C-Class coupe is less accommodating than the 3 Series coupe, no worse than an A5 and better than a Cadillac CTS Coupe. Its trunk of 11.7 cubic feet is average-sized for the small luxury coupe class.

2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class models

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is available in sedan and coupe body styles, both of which are available in C250, C350 and C63 AMG trim levels. The sedan is furthermore available as a C300 4Matic, while the coupe gets a C350 4Matic and a C63 AMG Black Series.

The C250 and C300 trims all come standard with 17-inch wheels, automatic headlights, LED running lights, automatic wipers, a sunroof, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, eight-way power front seats (with adjustable lumbar), MB-Tex vinyl upholstery, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, auto-dimming interior and driver-side mirrors, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, and a sound system with a CD player, auxiliary audio jack, a USB audio jack and HD radio. The C300 4Matic adds all-wheel drive and a V6 engine.

In sedan form, the C250 and C300 are further differentiated into Luxury and Sport sub-trims. These differ in wheel design, suspension tuning, styling details, steering wheel design and interior trim type. When equipped with 4Matic all-wheel drive, the Luxury also includes a comfort-tuned suspension. The Premium 1 package adds on four-way adjustable lumbar support for the front seats, heated front seats, driver memory functions, a power-adjustable steering wheel, split-folding rear seats and a Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system with satellite radio and an iPod interface (optional separately as well).

In coupe form, the C250 gets a panoramic sunroof, split-folding rear seats, additional driver seat adjustments, driver memory functions and a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. The coupe's Premium 1 package adds the heated seats and the Harman Kardon system with satellite radio and an iPod interface.

The C350 sedan comes only in Sport guise, with a bigger V6 engine and the Premium 1 package standard; the C350 coupe adds a panoramic sunroof. The C63 AMG is equipped similarly in terms of comfort and convenience features, but gets 18-inch wheels, high-performance tires, an adaptive sport-tuned suspension, upgraded brakes, sport seats, more aggressive styling and different interior trim.

There are a multitude of options available for the 2012 C-Class. The COMAND package adds a larger central infotainment screen, a navigation system, real-time traffic, voice controls, digital music storage and a single-CD player. A six-CD changer can also be added. The Lighting package adds adaptive bi-xenon headlights with washers and automatic high beams. The Lane Tracking package adds a blind-spot warning system and a lane-departure warning system. Stand-alone options include a rearview camera, Mercedes-Benz mbrace emergency telematics, a panoramic sunroof (on the sedan), a power rear sunshade, keyless ignition/entry and the Parktronic advanced parking sensor system.

All but the C63 can be equipped with the Full Leather Seating package, which includes extended leather trim, additional passenger seat adjustments and passenger seat memory functions.

The C63 can be equipped with the AMG Development package, which adds 30 extra horsepower, a higher top speed, red brake calipers and a carbon-fiber trunk lid spoiler. A limited-slip differential is offered.

Available only as a coupe, the C63 AMG Black Series brings even more performance. It gets more power, an adjustable coil-over sport suspension, high-performance composite brakes, extra engine cooling, a rear axle differential lock, a wider track, aerodynamic body modifications, special 19-inch wheels, a rear diffuser, a two-seat interior, sport seats, microfiber upholstery and steering wheel trim, and special interior design elements. The AMG Track package adds ultra-high-performance tires and an active cooling unit for the rear axle. The AMG Aerodynamics package includes added exterior winglets and an adjustable carbon-fiber rear spoiler.

W204 cruise control and speedtronic inoperative

Hi all. I just bought a 09 W204 C220 CDI with 94.000 miles. I am getting an error message when try to activate the cruise control saying "cruise control and speedtronic inoperative". If i press the speedtronic handle, the yellow light comes on but nothing happens. Its just when i push the cruise control either way that i get that error and the cruise control does not work. I dont have any other errors displaying, and i also checked the the ESP was working and turned on. Dont have any brake lights faulty (as I read somewhere that could be the problem). I read that the tyres could be the problem. I have check the tyres and the front ones are 225-45-r17 and the back ones are 245-45-r17 (i think they should be 245-40-r17). Also the back tyres, they are both different and from different brands. I would really use your help on figuing out what the problem could be... Thanks!!!

Fundamental advice - get the codes read by Star, the MB diagnostic system. Often when cruise and speedtronic go down it's esp related. A faulty wheel sensor is one thing that can cause this, but that would throw a fault, and you say that no other faults are showing. There are several other known possibilities for your hiccups. For instance, as you mention tyres, mismatched or unevenly worn tyres can cause faults, especially across the same axle. If your 204 is an Estate it will have different size and offset wheels front to rear, and the esp system allows for that. If you purchased from a dealer, then take it back and let him sort it. From a private individual, unless he's honest and obliging, you're on your own. But the first sentence here is the best course of action. Great cars the 204's!  

Your problem, as you suggested, is the tyres. The rear ones should have a lower profile number than the fronts. Your tyres are unequal circumferences and thus the CC is being mislead.  

As Naraic. The rear tyres should be a 40 profile. As they are bigger the cruise control thinks the rear wheels are turning slower than the fronts so therefore thinks something is wrong and cuts out.

It can also affect ESP/ABS and the ability to let you know about a puncture. Try going into the settings and tell the computer the tyre pressures are correct. This will reset the pressure monitoring system which is done by comparing wheel rotation speeds, not sure if that would help the cruise control but worth a try.

Thanks all for you help. I think as a first step I will try to replace the back tyres and see if it solves the issue. The tires are still good, so I will wait a bit more until they are worst and then change them.  

I would change them sooner. In extreme cases rolling radius differences can make the ABS kick in.

Re-calibrate the steering angle sensor would be my next step. You need STAR or MB-II to do this I believe

Requirements:

• ESP must be activated, but not intervening.
• The driven speed is at least 15 mph (20 km/h).
• The transmission is in position D.

• To activate cruise control: press rocker switch 1 up.

The current speed is stored and maintained by the vehicle when you take your foot off the accelerator pedal.

The last stored speed is called up and maintained by the vehicle.

If the last stored speed has previously been deleted, the currently driven speed is stored.

When you switch off the vehicle, the last speed stored is cleared.

The stored speed is increased or reduced by 1 mph (1 km/h).

The stored speed is increased or reduced by 5 mph (10 km/h).

• Accelerate the vehicle to the desired speed.

If cruise control is activated and Traffic Sign Assist has detected a speed restriction sign with a maximum permissible speed and this is displayed in the instrument cluster:

The maximum permissible speed shown by the traffic sign is stored and the vehicle maintains this speed.

• To deactivate cruise control: press rocker switch 3 down (CNCL).
• To deactivate cruise control: press rocker switch 1 down.

If you brake, deactivate ESP or if ESP intervenes, cruise control is deactivated.

Mercedes-Benz Offers DISTRONIC PLUS Radar-Based Adaptive Cruise Control

Made possible by the DISTRONIC PLUS adaptive cruise control, another revolutionary Mercedes-Benz safety feature – PRE-SAFE® brake – can apply full braking automatically in emergencies, to reduce accident severity. Available on the S-Class sedan, CL and CLS coupe, SL roadster, M-Class sport utility and E-Class line for 2013, the system sounds three warning tones when PRE-SAFE Brake senses an impending collision. About 1.6 seconds before impact is likely, partial braking is automatically initiated, and the PRE-SAFE occupant protection system are activated. If the driver still fails to react, full-power braking is initiated about 0.6 seconds before the collision, reducing the impact and effectively acting as an "electronic crumple zone."

DISTRONIC PLUS Makes Stop-and-Go Traffic a Breeze

The DISTRONIC PLUS system, which operates at nearly all speeds up to 124 mph, can be especially helpful in stop-and-go traffic. The adaptive cruise control feature helps maintain a pre-determined distance behind the car in front, while the automatic braking feature can slow the car to a stop if necessary.

DISTRONIC PLUS uses three beams of short-range radar with a frequency of 24 gigahertz sweep the first 33 yards in a fan-shaped 80-degree pattern, working with a narrower nine-degree beam of longer-range 77-gigahertz radar. The two radar frequencies complement each other to cover a full range of more than 160 yards – more than 1½ football fields. During approval of the new 24-gigahertz radar frequency for automotive use, government agencies cited its potential to improve traffic safety, reduce injuries and ultimately save lives.

Radar-Based Blind Spot Assist and Park Assist

The DISTRONIC PLUS system now includes Blind Spot Assist, which monitors both blind spots behind the vehicle. Whenever a turn signal is activated with a vehicle in the blind spot, the driver gets visual and audible warnings.

The latest radar-based DISTRONIC PLUS also incorporates Park Assist, which utilizes six radar sensors mounted behind the front and rear. At low speeds, the system scans available parking spaces and displays a "P" in the dash if the car will fit in the space. When the car's in reverse, Park Assist displays a top-view pictogram of the car and parking space, providing helpful steering guidance.

The Proven PRE-SAFE SYSTEM

PRE-SAFE Brake builds on the original PRE-SAFE system that Mercedes-Benz launched in 2002. PRE-SAFE® automatically tightens the front seat belts during those valuable seconds just before a possible impact, and the front passenger seat (and optional power rear seats) move to positions that can provide better protection. If the system senses an impending rollover, the sun roof closes as well. Side windows also close to provide better support for the window curtain air bags, and seat cushions inflate to provide greater lateral support for occupants. DISTRONIC Adaptive Cruise Control

The basic DISTRONIC adaptive cruise control (without the automatic emergency braking feature) uses one radar sensor at the front of the car to help maintain a pre-set distance from the car ahead. Taking its name from the words "distance" and "electronic," DISTRONIC is an available option on a number of 2013 vehicles.

The DISTRONIC system operates much like conventional cruise control – tip the stalk on the steering column, and the car maintains its set cruising speed. With DISTRONIC, the driver also selects a following distance, and when a DISTRONIC-equipped vehicle recognizes a slower moving vehicle in its path, it automatically slows down to maintain the following distance. Pull into a clear left lane, and the car resumes its original speed setting. If a slower car pulls in front, the DISTRONIC car again slows down to preserve the pre-set following distance. The following distance can be adjusted via a thumbwheel on the stalk.

Not only does DISTRONIC reduce throttle opening and downshift the transmission to control vehicle speed, but it can also apply partial braking automatically if needed, to help maintain the desired following distance.

A red triangle in the instrument panel lights up, and an audible beep sounds when the system recognizes that it cannot maintain the established following distance. A pictogram helps the driver monitor the car ahead. The driver can make the following distance a little closer by scrolling a stalk-mounted thumbwheel forward, and by scrolling rearward, the following distance is increased.

Radar Sensor Makes It Work

Mounted behind the grille, a radar module sends out a cone-shaped beam that covers about one traffic lane. This 77-gigahertz radar beam can project up to several hundred feet down the road, and the sensor receives any signals that are reflected back from objects ahead. The radar sensor sends the information about objects ahead to a microprocessor via a discrete circuit, and in turn, the microprocessor decides how to vary the acceleration and whether to apply the brakes. The system is designed not to recognize stationary objects or oncoming traffic. The major benefit of DISTRONIC cruise control is that it makes driving more relaxed and less stressful. PRE-SAFE® Teams Up With Brake Assist and DISTRONIC PLUS

In the early 1990s, Mercedes-Benz engineers conducting simulator tests discovered that many drivers don't push the brake pedal hard enough and soon enough in emergency braking, a discovery that led to the development of Brake Assist, standard equipment on all Mercedes-Benz vehicles since late 1990s. Brake Assist has proven itself a time and again, and simulator tests have shown that vehicles equipped with Brake Assist are involved in 26 percent fewer accidents.
