13 Ways to Use Your Mac and iPhone Together With Apple's Continuity

Have a Mac and an iPhone? These tips, features, and apps let you use them together in awesome ways!

Apple's macOS and iOS work well together. If your desktop and phone both come from Apple, you have many useful functions at your fingertips thanks to Continuity features.

Let's explore the best ways you can use your iPhone and Mac together.

1. Copy and Paste Content With Universal Clipboard

It's easy to move between your Apple devices seamlessly, thanks to a special set of features called Continuity.

The Universal Clipboard feature is part of this set and it allows you to share clipboard content between your Mac and iPhone. You just need to enable the Handoff feature on both devices.

After that, you can copy content on your Mac and paste it in anywhere on your iPhone, or vice-versa.

2. Resume Tasks With Handoff

Once you've enabled Handoff, you can also stop tasks on one device and resume them on another.

This works for all apps that work with Handoff, including Mail, Safari, Notes, Reminders, Calendar, Keynote, Pages, and Notes. Many third-party apps support the Handoff feature as well.

When you’re using an app that works with Handoff on your iPhone, you should see that app’s Handoff icon on your Mac’s Dock . It will look like the regular app icon with a gray circle with a tiny phone hovering on its upper right. Click on that icon to continue where you left off from your iPhone.

If you're transferring work from your Mac to your iPhone, you won’t see this Handoff icon. Instead, you’ll get an app banner that will appear on the App Switcher.

Just do what you would normally do when you need to switch apps, either by double-pressing the Home button for iPhones 8 and lower or slowly swipe up from the bottom of the screen for iPhones X and newer.

3. AirDrop Files, Webpages, and More

To share files between your Mac and iPhone, you can use AirDrop, Apple's in-built file transfer utility. To share, simply enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both devices and ensure that they're discoverable.

To begin sharing from your Mac, hold the Control button and click the file you want to share. Choose the Share > AirDrop option from the dropdown menu. Then choose your iPhone when it shows up in the AirDrop dialog.

If you're transferring files in the other direction, choose the file want to send then tap on the Share button. You should see the AirDrop icon or even your device’s AirDrop icon surrounded by dotted lines if it's nearby.

You can transfer not only files and folders with AirDrop, but other types of data as well. This includes webpages, notes, contacts, and photos.

4. Play Music, Movies, and TV Shows Across Devices

There are various ways to play music across devices. One option is to play audio from your iPhone on your Mac with a Lightning USB cable. You can also sync your Apple Music library across devices. Many third-party apps, like Spotify, support Apple’s Handoff feature as well.

You can stream from your Apple TV app across all devices. Just make sure that you’re logged in on your Apple device. You can even share your purchased movies with your family !

5. Share an Internet Connection

You only need a simple tweak to turn your Mac's internet connection into a Wi-Fi hotspot. First, head to System Preferences > Sharing and enable the checkbox for Internet Sharing . Then click on the Start button at the confirmation prompt.

To use your iPhone's internet connection on your Mac (known as tethering), you'll need to enable the Personal Hotspot option under Settings > Cellular on your iPhone. Your mobile device will then show up in the list of networks on your Mac, and you can connect to it.

6. Share and Close Safari Tabs

If you enable iCloud sync for Safari on your Mac and iPhone, you can close tabs open on one device from the other. Once enabled, the open Safari tabs from your iPhone will show up in the Safari tab switcher on your Mac. You might need to scroll down to see them.

To reveal the tab switcher on a Mac, hit Shift + Cmd + Backslash (\) or click on View > Show Tab Overview .

To close one of the iCloud tabs, click on the Close button that appears when you hover over it. If you want quick access to iCloud tabs, keep the Show iCloud Tabs toolbar button handy.

On your iPhone, you'll find your Mac's Safari tabs listed below your active tabs in the tab switcher. To reveal the tab switcher, tap on the Tabs toolbar button at the bottom right. Slide the tab name to the left to reveal its Close button.

7. Unlock Your Mac Using Your iPhone

You'll need a third-party app, like Unlox ($3.99), for the convenience of using your iPhone's passcode or Touch ID fingerprint to unlock your Mac.

If you have an Apple Watch, you can use it to unlock your Mac simply by sitting in front of it. That's the Auto Unlock feature in action. Speaking of which, you might be missing out on more Apple Watch features like this one.

8. Type on Your iPhone Using Your Mac's Keyboard

If an iPhone app you're typing into has a Mac version and supports iCloud syncing, anything you type into the app on your desktop shows up in the mobile version soon and vice-versa.

Even if that's not an option, a Mac app that simulates a proper Bluetooth keyboard, like Typeeto ($7.99), can work.

9. Make and Receive Calls From Your Mac

You can receive and make both cellular and FaceTime calls on your iPhone from your Mac. To make this work, your Mac and iPhone must be connected to the same network and signed in with the same iCloud and FaceTime account. You also have to enable these settings:

• On macOS: Go to Facetime > Preferences > Settings > Calls from iPhone
• On iOS: Go to Settings > Phone > Calls on Other Devices > Allow Calls on Other Devices . From the same section, enable the toggle switch for the Mac in question.

Now, when you receive a call on your phone, you'll see a notification for it on your Mac. You can accept or decline the call from the notification itself.

To make a call from your Mac, first Control-click on a phone number or its link from any app. Next, click on the Call button . A popup saying Call using iPhone: [Number] will appear. Click on the number to start the call.

10. Send and Receive SMS From Your Mac

You can use your Mac to send text messages using your iPhone if you enable Text Message Forwarding from Settings > Messages on your iPhone.

You also have to ensure that you're reachable at your phone number and email address on iMessage. To do this, put a checkmark next to the relevant contact details in the Messages app settings:

• On macOS: Go to Messages > Preferences > Accounts .
• On iOS: Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive .

Now you're all set to send SMS from your Mac. Start an iMessage conversation as you normally do, but this time see if you can select a phone number to send the message to. With text forwarding in place, you should be able to do so.

11. Request Markups and Sketches in Real-Time

With the Continuity feature, you can send a request from your Mac to your iPhone to make markup annotations on images or PDFs and add sketches to supported apps, like Pages, Keynote, and Numbers.

A Sketch or a Markup window will open on your iPhone in real time, allowing you to see changes on both screens as you sketch and finish your markups.

12. Speed Up Payments

For easy, seamless payments, you can set up Apple Pay on both your Mac and iPhone. If you own a Mac with Touch ID, you can authorize your Mac to use Apple Pay without the help of your iPhone by using the Touch ID sensor.

However, for older Macs, you can complete the purchase you've initiated with your Mac through Apple Pay on your iPhone or Apple Watch.

13. Take Quick Snapshots

Aside from sketches and markups, you can also make your Mac send a request on your iPhone to scan documents or take images so you can add them in supported apps like Mail, Keynote, and Messages.

Safari is the default web browser for macOS and iOS devices. It's a full-featured, secure browser that has exploded in popularity with both desktop and mobile users. If you're just getting started with Safari, here are eight tips that will improve your online experience and help you get the most out of your web browser.

This article's information applies to versions 13 through 11 of the Safari web browser on macOS.

Use Safari's Smart Search Field

Safari's Smart Search field is an address field and a search field, with features that make it easy to customize your web browsing. In the Smart Search field, enter the URL of a web page you want to visit, or enter a keyword or phrase to launch a search. If you're entering a search, Safari will offer up suggestions that you can select by scrolling down and pressing Return .

Select the magnifying glass in the Smart Search field to launch a search using a search engine that isn't your default, or to select from a list of previous searches.

For convenience and clarity, Safari's Smart Search field shows a shortened version of a website's URL. If you prefer to see the full URL, go to Safari > Preferences > Advanced and place a check in the box next to Show full website address .

Safari makes it easy to get to your favorite and most-used websites quickly and easily. When you open a new tab in Safari, you'll see sites you've designated as favorites under the Favorites heading. Below that, you'll see icons for sites you visit often under Frequently Visited .

To add a website as a favorite:

Navigate to the website.

Move your cursor over the Smart Search field. A plus sign will appear on the left.

Select and hold the plus sign (+).

Select Favorites from the drop-down menu.

The site's icon is added to your Favorites, and you'll see it on a new tab under the Favorites heading.

Alternatively, select the website name from the Smart Search bar and drag it down to your Favorites section.

Another quick way to add to Favorites: Select View > Show Favorites Bar to make the Favorites bar visible, and then drag the URL of your current web page to the bar.

Show the Web Page's Title

Safari has a clean, streamlined look, and by default doesn't show the title of the web page you're visiting. If you want to see the title of the web page:

Open the web page in Safari.

Select View > Show Tab Bar .

You'll see the website's title below the Smart Search bar.

Avoid Duplicate Tabs to Reduce Screen Clutter

Many users end up opening a lot of tabs when they're writing, researching, shopping, or browsing on the web. Safari has a handy feature to keep you from opening the same tab multiple times in a browsing session.

Here's how to direct Safari to send you to the existing open tab instead of opening a new tab:

In Safari, open at least two website tabs.

Open a new tab.

Start typing the name of one of the websites you already have open.

If there's already a tab open for that site, you'll see it under Switch to Tab .

Select that URL to go to the original tab.

To open a tab you recently closed, go to History > Recently Closed , and select the URL you want to revisit.

Watch Videos in a Floating Window

If you'd like to watch a video while you're working, browsing, or doing something else online, Safari's Picture in Picture feature makes it possible.

In Safari, navigate to a video you want to watch.

In the Smart Search bar, select and hold the blue audio button , then select Enter Picture in Picture .

The video will appear as a floating window. Go back to any website tab and enjoy your video in the top right corner of your screen.

Use Safari Reader View for Distraction-Free Reading

Safari has a quick and handy feature called Reader View that lets you strip away ads and formatting, leaving only a clean text interface to read. To get to Reader View:

Go to an article on the web you'd like to read.

If the site supports Reader View, you'll see an icon in the Smart Search bar that looks like four stacked lines. Press this icon to toggle to Reader View .

You'll see a clean text interface.

Select the Reader View icon again to return to the regular view.

Learn as You Go With Safari's Look Up Feature

If you're confused about something as you're browsing online, Safari is there to help you find a definition, get Wikipedia information, or see news stories about a topic. To use Look Up:

In Safari, navigate to a website or online article.

Highlight the word or phrase you want to learn more about.

Right-click or Control+click the text you selected and select Look Up .

Safari will deliver more information about the topic you selected.

Go Back to Your Previous Safari Workspace

Like most browsers, when you close out for the day and open up the next morning, you'll get a clean browsing slate. But if you have tabs you use every day, save time by automatically opening up to your previous tab situation so you can start right from where you left off.

Select Safari > Preferences .

Go to the General tab.

Next to Safari opens with , select All windows from last session from the drop-down menu.

The next time you open Safari, you'll pick up right where you left off with your previous session.

Separate Your iPhone Browsing Habits With Safari Profiles

With iOS 17 , Safari gained a feature called Profiles that's designed to help you separate your browsing sessions into categories like Work, School, Personal, or custom categories that you find useful to have siloed. This article explains how to use it on iPhone .

Each profile gets its own icon and silos all of your history, Tab Groups, Favorites, Private Browsing tabs, and cookies. You can even assign specific third-party extensions to different profiles to optimize your browsing experience based on the task at hand. Here's how to create your own profile in Safari.

How to Create a Safari Profile

• Open the Settings app on you ‌iPhone‌ or iPad .
• Scroll down to Safari .
• Under the "Profiles" section, tap New Profile .
• Under "Settings," choose a Favorites folder (or a new folder) and select which tabs (if any) that you want to be open when you're using the profile with the Open New Tabs option.

When you create a new profile, your device will automatically generate a "Personal" profile to differentiate other browsing sessions conducted outside of the profile you created.

Both profiles and additional ones you create can be edited in the same section of the Settings app. When editing an existing profile, you can also enable any Safari extensions you have installed on your device with the Manage Extensions option, as well as get rid of the profile using the Delete Profile option.

How to Switch Between Profiles in Safari

• In Safari, tap the Tabs icon with two overlapping squares.
• Tap the middle icon to bring up the active profile's menu.
• Tap the Profile option to change which profile is active.

The Safari Profiles feature is available in ‌iOS 17‌, iPadOS 17 and macOS Sonoma , as well as being part of Safari 17 for macOS Monterey and macOS Ventura . Any profiles you create will be synced across devices logged into the same Apple ID .

How to run Mac OS X on your iPhone or iPad without jailbreaking

It’s highly unlikely Apple will ever give us an iPad that runs macOS — and that’s OK. Because with a few tricks (that do not require a jailbreak), you can easily install Mac OS X on your iPad all by yourself.

The process won’t void your warranty or interfere with iPadOS in anyway. All you need is a copy of Mac OS X, an app that lets you run virtual machines, and plenty of storage space.

There was a time when many iPad users longed for a tablet that ran macOS — a full desktop operating system. But over the years, as iPadOS became more capable, the desire for this faded.

iPad now does almost everything most tablet users could ever want it to do. It runs powerful apps. It boasts a real file browser. And it can read flash drives and external hard disks. You can even be control an iPad with a mouse .

Nevertheless, there’s still something incredibly cool about the concept of running macOS on an iPad. If you’ve always wondered what it might be like, now is the time to try it out for yourself.

How to run Mac OS X on an iPhone or iPad

Using an app called UTM, it’s possible to run Mac OS X Leopard — and earlier versions of Apple’s operating system — in a virtual machine. It’s fairly simple to set up and it’s perfectly safe.

The process has no impact on iOS or iPadOS, so there’s no need to worry about breaking your device. And it uses software, albeit unauthorized by Apple, that you can easily install without a jailbreak.

Interested? Here’s how to get started.

What you need

Before you dive into the installation guide, you might want to read through some of the caveats we outlined at the end. There are also some things you will need to prepare in advance:

• A copy of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard (or earlier): We can’t tell you how to obtain this, but a simple Google search will. You will need an .ISO file that should be saved directly to your iPhone or iPad. More recent versions of Mac OS X are not compatible.
• Plenty of free storage: That Mac OS X image is going to take up around 8GB of storage space. You also will need around 15GB for your virtual machine’s hard disk. Ensure you have plenty of free storage available on your device before you begin.
• Plenty of free time: Although running Mac OS X on an iOS device isn’t complicated, it is lengthy. The installation process alone takes around two hours.
• AltStore: To install UTM without a jailbreak, we will use AltStore, the self-described “home for apps that push the boundaries of iOS.”  Follow our guide on how to install AltStore if you don’t already have it running on your iPhone or iPad.
• UTM: Finally, you will need to download the UTM app package (free) to your device from GitHub.

With all these things ready to go, we can begin.

Installing UTM

The first step in the process is to install UTM:

• Open the AltStore app.
• Tap the My Apps tab, then tap the + button.
• Select the UTM app package and wait for it to install. You will need to have AltStore Server running on your Mac or PC.

Creating a virtual machine

That was easy, wasn’t it? Now, it’s time for the exciting bit — creating your virtual machine and running Mac OS X. There’s quite a bit you need to do here, but it’s all relatively simple:

• Open the UTM app.
• Tap the + button in the top-right corner to begin creating your virtual machine.
• Give your machine a name .
• Under the System section, change the architecture to PowerPC and the system to Mac99 based PowerMAC .

• Under the Drives section, tap Setup Drives/Images .
• Here’s where we’ll give the machine a virtual hard drive and the Mac OS X disk image. Tap the + button.

• Tap the + button again, then tap Create . Give your machine’s hard drive a name , then specify its size . You will need to allocate around 15GB (15,000MB) for Mac OS 10.5 Leopard, but earlier versions may require less. Tap Save .
• Ensure both drives appear in the list, then go back by tapping Create VM .
• Now tap Save .

Disable the virtual machine sound card

Your new Mac OS X virtual machine should appear in UTM with a play button. It’s not quite ready to run just yet, however. We first need to disable the machine’s sound card, which will prevent it from working:

• Tap the i button alongside the virtual machine’s name.

• It’s finally time to boot your machine by tapping the play button.

Setting up Mac OS X

If, after a few minutes, you see the Apple logo on your screen, you’ve done everything correctly and you are booting into Mac OS X setup. If you get an error, repeat the steps to ensure you didn’t miss anything.

Before you can start installing Leopard, you will need to format your virtual hard drive by following these steps:

• Click Utilities in the menu bar, then click Disk Utility…
• Select QEMU HARDISK .

Once this process is complete, you can close Disk Utility and return to the Mac OS X installer. This will be familiar to anyone who’s installed Mac OS on a computer before — just follow the steps.

Note that it takes a long time to install Mac OS X Leopard. I had to wait around two hours. You will want to leave your device to do its thing and come back later. Just ensure it is plugged into power.

When the installation process is complete, you will see an “Install Failed” error that suggests it wasn’t successful. Don’t worry — this is normal. Follow the steps below to continue:

• Shut down your machine by tapping the power button in the UTM toolbar. The app will close.
• Reopen the UTM app.
• Tap the i button alongside your machine’s name.
• Tap Drives/Images , then tap Edit .
• Delete the Mac OS X .ISO from the list. When asked if you want to delete the disk image data, tap No .
• Tap Back , then tap Configuration .
• Under Boot , tap Try booting first from .
• Select Hard Disk .
• Tap Configuration again, then tap Done .

You can now restart your virtual machine by tapping the play button. It should boot into the Mac OS X setup process. Complete the final steps and you’ll be taken to your desktop.

You now have an iPhone or iPad that runs Mac OS X.

The caveats

As I mentioned above, getting Mac OS X running on an iOS device isn’t too complicated — it’s just long-winded. Is it worth it? That depends on what you intend to do with it, because there are some big caveats.

Not only is Leopard old now, but you’re running it on a virtual machine that has a PowerPC processor (using an X86 CPU doesn’t seem to work) that isn’t compatible with modern software.

Safari won’t load modern websites. iChat is dead. iTunes is too slow to be of any use. And many of the other apps — like Mail, Contacts and Calendar — are available (and much more useful) on your iOS device.

If you have spare time to kill and you feel like taking a trip down memory lane, it’s certainly a lot of fun. Just don’t expect to be making Mac OS X your primary operating system on iPhone or iPad.

iOS Safari - Replicating a specific user agent string type

I work for a payment gateway and we are getting reports of problems where people can't complete payments through our payment page on some apple devices. We can't replicate the issue, but have the user agent strings from many devices that had the issue and I can see a trend.

When I try from an iPad or iPhone the user agent string looks like:

but the problem devices have user agent strings that look like:

Notice that the problem devices have "GSA/4.1.0.31802" instead of "Version/7.0" in the user agent string.

How do I replicate this? Everything I do seems the give me the "Version/7.0" string.

I do not know why your product is checking for this. You should be checking for capabilities of the browser.

Hey man, that's not what I was asking at all. I was trying to replicate the clients configuration so that I could replicate an error that they were seeing and resolve it.

Anyway, I was able to identify the GSA as the Google Search Appliance, i.e. the Google App. Some form submissions aren't working inside this app and it seems to be a problem on Google's side.

Safari to get an AI boost in iOS 18, macOS 15 with smarter search, web page ‘eraser’

Much of the noise being made about Apple’s efforts into AI has been focused on general improvements to iOS 18 and Siri as well as the upcoming M4 chip for the Mac. However, as we get closer to WWDC, more reports about the AI software that Apple will create are coming out, with the most recent one covering Apple’s efforts to enhance the next major version of Safari.

AppleInsider reports that the company is working on a new “Intelligent Search” feature that uses on-device AI to summarize a web page. The language learning model that Apple has developed can identify key phrases and topics that give an idea of what a web page’s content is about and create a summary for the user.

Other features that Apple is working on include:

• A Web Eraser that gives users the option to remove parts of a web page. This includes ads, text, and images. Safari will remember the parts that have been removed when the page is closed, and if the page is revisited, Safari alerts the user that the page has been modified.
• A new page controls menu that appears in the address bar. This menu essentially collects user controls that are spread throughout Safari (text size, zoom, Reader mode, Privacy Report, and more).
• An AI enhancement to Visual Lookup that gives users product information. This feature could also be implemented system-wide, not just in Safari.

Apple plans to implement the new Safari 18 features in both iOS 18 and macOS 15, which will be announced at WWDC24 on June 10. The report claims some features, such as the AI Visual Lookup, may not be available until 2025. That tracks with previous rumors that have suggested AI features will be rolled out in waves. AppleInsider also reported recently on Apple’s plans to update the Notes and Calculator apps.

Apple has dominated 2024 smartphone sales with iPhone 15 Pro Max

Apple and Samsung are still the top two highest-selling smartphone vendors in the world, and have been for some time. On a per model basis, though, it seems that Apple's continuing to edge out its main rival.

In a list of the top ten best-selling smartphones in the world for Q1 2024 by Counterpoint, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is in first position with a 4.4% market share. The note seen by AppleInsider says iPhone 15 was second with 4.3%, and the iPhone 15 Pro was third with 3.7%.

In fourth place was the iPhone 14 at 1.9%, narrowly beating the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. The iPhone 15 Plus lags behind in eighth place with a 1.3% share.

The Q1 results mirror those of Q1 2023, which had the iPhone 14 in first with 4.7% followed by the iPhone 14 Pro Max at 4.3%. At that time, Apple also had five devices in the top ten list.

Counterpoint's notes add that the quarter was the first where the top 10 smartphones were all 5G-capable.

This was also Apple first non-seasonal quarter that the Pro Max model took first place.

Counterpoint claims there was also a major shift in purchasing habits, with half of Apple's total sales in Q1 occupied by the Pro range. By contrast, Pro models formed only 24% of purchases in Q1 2020, four years previous.

The note insists this is an evident trend towards premium smartphones. Seven out of the top ten were classed as premium, namely having a wholesale price at or above $600.

Previously, Counterpoint reported that Apple dominated across the whole of 2023 . In February, it determined that iPhone made up seven spots in the top ten smartphones sold in 2023 for the first time.

Hardly surprising 15's are very very good phones, especially the Pro's! Once people saw through the fake hype AI on the Samsung S24 range and particularly how blatantly Samsung copied the iPhone 15's, they went and bought the real deal, an iPHONE

The S24 series was the first to reach the market with GenAI features and capabilities, allowing users to create unique content and experience a new level of interaction with their smartphones." It is suggesting those features actually gave the model a push.  What you need to remember here is that they are talking about 'share' of 'models'. For two companies with roughly the same output for any given quarter, the one with less models is likely to come out on top.

Marketshare is nice, but Apple had over 43% of revenue share to Samsung's 26% for Q3 of 2023, leaving 31% for everyone else. Apple's profit share remains above 80%. A unique OS is surely part of the reason for that, and Apple's limited number of models derives better production margins. Still, Apple is hardly a monopoly, given that buyers have choice in the marketplace. AI features in the iPhone 16 might very well juice sales just as it did for Samsung.

And there are still many people even today who still say Apple should go cheap to pick up marketshare......

If you can’t afford an Apple product, that’s your problem, not Apple’s. There all sort of deals, that allow many levels of income to acquire an Apple product.
